I have been with this company for many years. I'm under the premier plan. The only thing this plan lacks is allowing its patients to have more the 2 cleanings a year. To me this would benefit the patient from having to return for other problems which is a preventative offerings to the patient. It would benefit everyone in the long run to keep a healthy set of teeth and gums.

I find Delta Dental to be very cooperative and reasonable in their fees. I have never had any problems with them. Their coverage is very broad. For example, I have had to have implants, most of which were covered.

My only complaint is that they don't pay their full share for white fillings and that is all most dentists use. Other than that I have never had a problem. We have been with them for over 10 years.

Delta is ok if you just have to have teeth cleaned... Other procedures are based on what Delta you have. It still cost me 55.00 for a filling. Not even a big one. That is a little outrageous. Sometimes I wonder if the cost is worth it.

There are a few different plans with Delta Dental. My plan allows for three cleanings a year and you don't have to wait four months between them. The premium is about what the dentist would charge if I paid cash; however, the real payoff is if and when you need additional services. We've had a few of those and the discount helps make root canals, cavity fills, etc more affordable. I really like the monthly charge to my credit card and knowing that I have coverage. NOTE: If you currently have dental insurance, be sure to have your new plan start when the old plan ends or you may have to go a year before it covers any additional services.

I have been with Delta Dental for many years now so when I retired at 56 years of age I had to pick out my dental insurance. I get reimbursed my monthly premium so it was a no brainer to pick out Delta. They pay for bi yearly cleaning and X-rays. So far that’s all of needed.

I have been extremely pleased with Delta Dental. The premium is a bit high, however I'm glad I have it. It's nice to have 4 cleanings a year, free. The co-payment depends on the Dentist's charges. Mine have never been extremely high.

Great insurance coverage. I am using PPO level and it covers all preventive cares 100% with out of network dentist. For non-preventive cares, they cover 40 to 50% and the rest I pay. Its rate is reasonable. Had no problem with them for over 20 years.

Delta Dental is a little on the expensive side. My premium for my wife and I is approximately $1400 a year. Everything else is good. Delta Dental has adequate coverage and still have to pay out of pocket for some of the services.

It's different. I was terrified when I first came in, who is not when they go to the dentist. It was for the professional staff, the relaxing place and music, that I was able to calm my fear. I really appreciate the seriousness with which they treat every patient. It's become my go-to place for my teeth.

I have Delta Dental for some time. The positive factors with this insurance are that it's widely available and most dentists accept it. Another positive factor is that annual checkups are covered 100% with my plan and I think many of their plans cover health maintenance provided by the annual check up. The negative is that many items are only covered at 50% and this can cost thousands of dollars for expense dental work like root canals.

My bill is never correct with Delta Dental: I always have to get refunds from dentist office when I ask for my explanation of bill from dentist and delta dental. Delta dental also does not cover white fillings: most dentists refuse to do silver fillings anymore, and silver fillings cannot be done for small cavities; leaving members with huge out of pocket costs. It's actually cheaper to NOT have dental insurance and pay a lower out of pocket cost with 'no insurance' for fillings. As an adult who is trying to stay on top of my teeth to prevent them from getting worse, delta dental does not provide quality nor affordability for members.

They don’t pay enough for dental ins. Then if you have a bridge or full set you can’t claim it every 5 years. Then they tell the dentist how much they will pay then 3 months later they say it’s not covered.

They do pretty well, I just wish they would cover more on procedures, that are dentist approved, such as root canals or crowns, etc. I really tire of insurance companies that know more than the doctor or dentist. Dental insurance should just cover more extensively. That said, they are pretty good overall though.

Delta Dental has a lot of different plans that make it easy to find something affordable. Customer service is quite good and responsive. They worked with me until my questions were answered and I was satisfied. Costs are comparable to other insurers. I had Delta Dental all through my employment years and was able to keep them transitioning into retirement with no waiting period.

With 2 adults and 7 kids having everything from cleanings, fillings, wisdom teeth pulls, braces and dentures that says a lot. I never even had to contact them once. Delta Dental, like most dental plans, has far too many loopholes and exclusions. For example, they did not cover tooth damage that was caused by grinding but they would cover similar damage if it occurred due to a different reason. I complained to their own dentist about this at a health fair and even he admitted that this should be covered and that Delta could easily do this if their premiums were just a tiny bit higher. But no, they don’t care about reasonable coverage.

It's like not having any dental insurance. I am not sure if it is due to the type of insurance plan laid out or it is just not worth having. Tried to get my teeth fixed and all it covered was the visit, which was actually a consultation.

If you have the HMO plan it turns out you have to call DD before seeing a new dentist (even after moving) or they refuse to cover the visit. I hadn’t been to the dentist in way too long despite paying for DD, and after moving to take a new position (and updating them on the move), I found a new dentist on the HMO plan using the DD website, and called the dentist to confirm they were on the plan. Well, after having my initial routine checkup, I received a $220 bill that DD refuses to pay because I hadn’t called them first to change my primary dentist (despite using their site to search for a dentist).
This led me to more research and it turns out they really don’t cover much. Research it, but you’ll probably save money just paying for the dentist directly when you go. After reading up I’ve realized I pay $600/year for insurance that caps out at $1,000 coverage a year. So odds are, you’ll lose money unless your healthcare costs $600-1000/year. Again, most people will be better off paying the dentist directly. And after having them refuse to cover my first routine visit in 2 years, I’ve concluded Delta Dental is a total waste for me (even if I need a few fillings).

This is a total rip off and dishonest. Find another plan with a company that is honest.

Signed up for Delta Dental in December, without realizing that my deductible only lasted till the end of December, not for a year from sign-up date. That was my first mistake. So then I went for a teeth cleaning, telling the dentist I didn't want X-rays. Bill came back for about $93. Now here's the crazy math. For a cleaning and "oral exam" (have no idea what that was; she didn't even look in my mouth--and why would she? Covid-19), she charged me $200. I've never been charged that much before, and I used to go to a fancy dentist in midtown Manhattan--he charged me $120. So then Delta, using a percentage, knocked it down to $106.
When I called, to complain, they pointed out that they'd save me $94 on the original bill. It's obvious that the dentist had inflated the bill so that Delta would pay her more. So, with the yearly deductible and monthly premiums, I pay Delta $700 per year. For big procedures, they pay 50%. So if I were to get a root canal for $2000, and my deductible had been paid, I'd be in the hole for $1000, plus the $700 yearly fees. That's $1700 out of my pocket. Of course, then I've used my $1000 cap--everything after that comes right out of my pocket. If I've already had two cleanings, then I've reached the max earlier. This doesn't strike me as a good deal--and as others have pointed out here, Delta isn't clear about what they cover and don't cover. I also suspect that a number of dentists, like mine, inflate the initial price so that Delta will pay a higher percentage. This is clearly a scam.

Delta Dental of Illinois tries its best not to pay dental claims with exclusions that should be considered criminal. They deny covered procedures that should be done in conjunction with other procedures. The benefit guide for Dentegra insurance says it pays for 90-100% of in- or out-of-network diagnostic and preventative dental care. This is absolutely false. They pay for 90-100% of THEIR INTERNALLY SET FEE for this care. This means that for my $400 preventative dental visit they paid $81. I still have not received a check. This is fraud in my opinion. CHANGE YOUR DENTAL PROVIDER NOW. DO NOT STAY WITH DELTA DENTAL. In times like this, how a company treats their members is a direct insight to the inner core values of the company. Delta Dental does NOT CARE about its members and just cares about MAKING MONEY! In March, I was encouraged by my dentist to have my wisdom teeth removed as I had cavities in all 4 teeth. Along with gingivitis. This came as a surprise as I have always had good dental hygiene. In Jan 2020, I had signed up with Delta Dental on an individual plan (meaning not paid by my employer). In Feb, my dentist gave me the news and told me I couldn’t wait until my 6 month waiting period was over as things could get far worse. I luckily got an appointment in March right before Los Angeles went into LOCKDOWN for 2 months.
I have been with the plan for over 8 months now and they still won’t cover my claim and still take money every month out of my account. I have contacted Delta Dental numerous times over the past 8 months to submit grievance claims to have the waiting period waived in light of Covid and the fact I could not wait. Delta Dental responded with “we are in the business of insurance.” WOW oh wow! If that doesn’t give you red flags about how MONEY HUNGRY this company is, I don’t know what will.
Throughout the pandemic, Delta Dental has sent numerous emails and even advertised on their website how to self-care at home. Funnily enough, they kept taking money out of our accounts and are getting richer by people staying home. I am all about self-care and trying to reduce contact in light of the pandemic but to have a company refuse to cover a procedure that falls within my benefits only because I had it done a couple months early, it disgusting service. They do not care! I could go on but I’ll save you the time – DO NOT USE DELTA DENTAL – YOUR WELLBEING IS THEIR LOWEST PRIORITY!!!

I moved a year ago. My mail from Delta Dental was going to my old address and being forwarded. I created an account on Delta Dental's online customer portal, and attempted to update my information, but there was no way to update my address. I attempted to contact Delta Dental using the contact function in the online customer portal, and it took a full month to get the cryptic reply "Thank you for your inquiry. The address would need to be updated by your BA". What or who the heck is my BA? I have no idea. But my inquiry was marked as closed, so I would need to initiate another contact request, and if the first one was any indication I'd probably have to wait another month to get a reply that probably would be of no help. Or I could try to carve out time during business hours to try to call them on the phone and get it resolved that way.
The fact that there is not a straightforward way for customers to do something as simple as update their address is a real problem, as is the very unresponsive and unhelpful customer service (or lack thereof) I was treated to when I tried to contact them about this issue. My mail forwarding has expired so they are probably still sending my mail to the wrong place despite my efforts to get them to send it to my current address.

I went on to pay my premium for October only to find out that the pending status for September's premium didn't process for whatever reason and I was now more than 30 days overdue so they dropped me. I hadn't missed a payment before. The website said it was processing my payment on August 27th from my account. Why would I have questioned it when it was the same as every other payment. The insurance does not pay what is says it will pay and the dentists they work with will quote one price, then charge a much higher price. This is definitely a waste of your time and money. A complete set of dentures was supposed to cost me a maximum of $385. Delta has refused payment of any part of them leaving me with $2681 to pay out of pocket. They refused the payment stating that a bridge was least expensive to do and since they had paid a previous claim they would denounce this one. Problem being that they assisted with one side of the mouth and refused the other. A child knows one side plus one side equals two sides. Hence two different things, months apart and would not honor my claim. I plan to cancel them. I feel you get a better deal with no insurance. Almost $52 a month and they pay $1000 a year. As an AARP member for many years, it made sense to select one of their Delta Dental plans. Through no fault of the AARP, given that many dental plans tend to be somewhat inadequate, the Delta Dental plan that I selected, which cost me $40 plus per month, proved to be anything but beneficial to me. On the contrary, after putting pen to paper, I realized that all I had really needed to do in the first place was to save that premium, select my own dentist by shopping around, and negotiating the terms. Without exception, my Delta Dental plan covered less, much less, than that which was promised. As I explored this insane anomaly, I learned that the plan provides a directory of dental providers who want the Delta listing, but may or may not accept the coverage guidelines of the Delta plan. This may almost guarantee that there will be substantial additional fees.
In my two-year association, that promised coverage failed to even meet the cost-of-doing-business for my dental providers, even for periodic cleanings. This is the most egregiously flawed plan I have ever signed up for. Dental offices want your business. And by and large, I find them to be trustworthy and informative. Find a good one and negotiate your own terms is my recommendation. It sure beats a $500 a year waste of insurance premiums. I don't normally write a bad review but I'm overwhelmed by the multitude of bad ratings and reviews I've already seen, and which describe very similar experiences. Please, short of alleging fraud, buyer beware.

After trying two different dentists I've had four appointments for a basic cleaning that the dentist offices have found a reason to not honor in the past six months. One was due to COVID so I get it. But the others have been canceled because 1) they made the appointment with the wrong office, 2) they say they can't get claims approved by Delta (the managed care plan pays them every month, they shouldn't be filing claims), and 3) they need time to establish me with the insurance company (by that point I was on the patient roster sent from the Delta for the past four months straight). They have the nerve to say I should have gotten an estimate in writing before services. The Dentist told me you would cover the cost, my profile says I am eligible. Next time I'll have them engrave it in stone apparently. This company is a scam.

I want to share my experience with Delta Dental insurance that is promoted through AARP. My husband has been on this plan since 2016. I was on this plan, too. My health insurance plan changed. The new plan covered dental so I was removed from my husband's plan in 2017. Now my plan has changed again and it no longer includes dental coverage, so I wanted to get back on my husband's Delta Dental plan.
The attempt to do this resulted in Delta Dental recalculating the total amount due to include the years I was not on the plan. I communicated with Delta Dental and was told that they do not have a mechanism to do anything about the over billing and if I wanted to get back on the plan, I would have to pay the monthly premiums from the date I was removed from the plan (2/1/2017) to date--about 4 years of premium payments for a service they didn’t provide. What type of business would do this? This is an outrageous policy for any business to participate in. Subscribers should be aware of this unreasonable and unethical business practice. I relayed my experience to AARP in hopes they would make better choices to promote to their members.

I purchased DeltaCare USA plan. I was advised by my previous ortho (before deltacare purchase) that I need my regular cleaning first and to have 4 fillings done before they can start putting my braces. I then transferred to deltacare insurance and was given an in-network dental clinic which is Western Dental & Orthodontics in Vallejo. When I got examined by their dentist, they want me to pay $1.7k for deep cleaning, 7 fillings and some other procedures that in my lifetime no dentist told me to. And they won't do basic cleaning which is cheap because they told me it would make things worse. So that's how they make their money, making you pay for expensive procedures which would balance out the small amount that Delta Dental is paying the clinic. They also make you sign a waiver that prevents you from directly suing the clinic. Beware!

What they don't tell you is that it's 100% of "the allowable amount," which isn't provided anywhere on any website or in any of the plan information. In order to know how much your visit will be, you have to contact every dentist individually. When I spoke with them on the phone their customer service was obstinate and deliberately unhelpful.

Would give zero stars if possible. I had Delta Dental for years through my employer and it was fantastic. When I retired I signed up for the Medicare supplement and it is the absolute worst. I never paid a dime out of pocket for my routine cleanings and xrays and now I have bills upwards of $70 for the same. When I needed periodontal services, the list of providers included MD's and general dentists with only ONE approved periodontal provider which was over 50 miles from my home. Talking to the "customer service" idiots is like banging your head against the wall. After waiting the required one year period, I went to a local provider and only $400 of an almost $2700 bill was covered. I appealed, even writing to AARP who sponsors the company and again was left dealing with rude idiots with deaf ears. If you have any other options for Medicare dental coverage, go with it.

There are two elements to my negative review. First, if you do choose a policy with Delta, we aware that they will use copious fine print to reduce the percentages they actually pay. Do not go by the percentages the "market." One small example: They will claim that they cover 50% of the cost of a filling, but what they don't tell you is that the 50% is only for silver fillings. No dentist in my area will do a silver filling anymore, but Delta insists. Net effect is instead of 50%, they pay only 40. Second, I have had a billing issue that I have worked to resolve for a month. Their customer service reps have zero power to resolve anything. When I ask if a supervisor can, they say, "perhaps" but none are available (they are NEVER available). I requested a call back from a supervisor for which I've waited days, and still not call.
I sent the details of the issue to them in writing, to which they responded to only part of the problem, but seem to have now lost my original, detailed message (also, you can't send an actual email for which you would have a record, but must post it in their template, leaving you without a record). I am dismayed and saddened at what this company has become. After a month of struggling, in which they seem to have lost my written comm and the records of my many phone calls), I will basically be ripped off for 85.00. Shop for a more credible company.

Delta Dental rejected my claim on the ground that I didn't provide the complete information before the 1-year deadline. The fact was I submitted the claim 7 days before the deadline. I didn't put in the procedure code because the work was done in a foreign country and I didn't know what code to put in. When I submitted the claim, I called them and the customer service lady told me: no worries, they can figure out the code. Then they finally reviewed my claim in about 2 weeks and rejected my claim right away saying it was too late. I called many many times to tell them I had submitted it before the deadline. Now they find this excuse to deny the claim.
Their customer service is very inefficient. Many times I called they would say, "We are working on it and please call back in 2 weeks". Then I called back. Nothing had happened and no progress at all. It took me 2 months to get them to admit that I did submit the claim in time. If they had responded sooner I would have provided the complete information. They just don't want to pay for any claim. This kind of insurance company shouldn't exist.

I was with Delta Dental of California when I worked for Boeing, and they were fine. Foolishly, after I retired, I thought that it would be the same on a private plan. It has not been so. I had two plans with Delta. One was with Kaiser Advantage (which I never used as I wanted to stay with the dentist I had been seeing for two decades). The second was a premium plan obtained through BAI that should have permitted me to use my current dentist.
At one point, my wife needed extensive bridgework. The Kaiser Delta plan refused to pay because we had not gone to the assigned dentist (which I had no issue with). However, after the Kaiser Delta plan refused to pay, Delta did not process under the premium (second) plan for months, then claimed that the submittal period had elapsed (because of THEIR administrative delays) and steadfastly refused to pay on the SECOND plan.
All in all, I paid in several thousand dollars in premiums for no net benefit when it came to cost-savings. I would have been better off to just have set up an escrow account for dental work and pay with a credit card when work was necessary. I would advise anyone who is considering buying an individual plan to look elsewhere. Delta's business administration is either utterly incompetent (to the insured's detriment) or knowingly unethical. I suspect my experience with the Boeing plan (which was fine) occurred because Delta was afraid of alienating the big customer. For an individual that doesn't pose much threat, they are a pretty miserable outfit to deal with.

Before you sign up as a Delta dental provider, you should know that they don't raise the negotiated fee every 2 years as most insurance companies do. When our office signed up to participate (because they were the military insurance) our write off was 10-15%, now it is more like 30-40%. For example, when a patient comes in for a prophy and exam, our fee is $196 (the practice is in an expensive area). Delta pays $123, and we write off $73. For a crown we write off 1/3, Delta pays 1/3 and the patient pays 1/3. If we had it to do over again we would never participate with Delta. The most recent thing they are doing is downgrading composites to amalgams and paying even less, which means the patient pays more. We have not done amalgams in 25 years.

My new policy is effective on Nov 1, 2019.
The associate said I could not cancel my policy with a Delta Dental until next September 30, 2020 because of my start date??? I told them that this is open enrollment and I wanted to cancel. They said I have to write a letter or go on their website and state why I wanted to cancel but it probably would be denied and I would have to stay enrolled with them and pay for another year. WTH? They never sent me a notice that there was a date re cancellation. They said it is in their declaration that was sent when I first enrolled. I have never heard of not being able to cancel a dental policy.
I immediately called my bank and put a stop payment on any withdrawals from Delta Dental. I will never get involved with Delta Dental again. They said they needed X-rays to prove I wasn't missing the teeth prior to my effective coverage. After providing the X-Rays from my initial dentist visit they still refused, asking for Dr.'s explanation. After providing explanation they still denied the claim saying they needed Dr.'s clinical notes. Still not confident they will pay what they are obliged to. That means delta only covered 47% of my bill, NOT 100%. I'd be $600/year in the clear to pay for preventative out of my own pocket rather than carry this joke of a plan. Before you buy, you better get clear answers on if your dentist is a "premier" or PPO. If they are only premier you will be left with your premium payment PLUS you will be paying most of the bill yourself because they only pay the "allowed" amount. No federal oversight and they make money. There are other ways to get good dental care, at a better price. I do not recommend dental PPO providers. Delta Dental is awful and I am not sure how they are the number one dental provider, but I guess money talks and I'm sure they have it because they are in the don't pay claims business. I will try to give a short version. I woke up one morning and my face was in pain. I quickly realized it was a toothache. I called the dentist office as soon as it opened and they saw me immediately. They realized it was a cracked tooth. They numbed the gum, gave me a temporary crown and we waited a month to determine if it were a crown or root canal I would need.
Fortunately, it was a crown, so the dentist put a permanent crown on. Months later I received a letter from delta dental telling my claim was denied, and I didn't understand why since, I never had a lapse in policy. The BS reason they gave is their dentist reviewed X-rays and determined the tooth could have be filled. My question was, did your doctors see me, I don't think, so how are they making a fair assessment. Then they said anything over $250, the dentist office should notify them, "this is not a law". I've been going to my dentist for over 20 years and if I felt they were scam artist, I would have left them years ago.
I typically do not have any major issues with my teeth, just simple cleanings every 6 months. I guess crowns can run from $800 to $1700, mine was a mire $577, is that rip off, I don't so. This is just typical insurance practice, keep as much money as possible. This is insane! My mother just told me they are her new company and I warned her this is not an A one company, please find another insurance company. Being a new member to Delta Dental Insurance and having some questions regarding my orthodontic coverage, I called the customer service line and spoke to a couple different representatives on a couple different occasions. After being assured I would be covered for orthodontic treatment I proceeded with a consultation at my orthodontist’s office. There the staff wrote a list of questions for me to have answered for them as Delta Dental does not release any of your information to 3rd parties. Every question was verbally answered by a customer service representative of Delta Dental all of which enabled me to have braces put on and begin a contract with my orthodontist while still in my coverage waiting period.
Upon my waiting period being satisfied, my orthodontist’s office files my claim and my claim comes back DENIED. Turns out all of the information given to me was completely inaccurate and I was never covered for orthodontic treatment to begin with, in the waiting period or not, my plan apparently did not cover adults. Being I had already been assured I would be covered, given my enrollee number and identification needed, I then called the customer service line once again and from there filed a grievance. After the 30 day time frame for a response, I still never received a letter with any type of response. So I call the customer service line again and the representative tells me there is no grievance filed in my account and so I ask to speak to a supervisor.
I speak to a supervisor who tells me there is a grievance showing and that it was also denied due to the fact that I was not given false information. I responded with all the information I was given and ask her, “How would I know all of these things if none of it were ever given to me.” She responds with, “You could’ve looked it up online”.... Yeah, no, I don’t believe the details to my coverage as well as the steps I need to take are listed there. The supervisor agrees then transfers me to the investigator in charge of my case, a message was left and she returned my call. The investigator actually listened to the recorded call and upon me confronting the fact that I was assured I would be covered but in reality NEVER was covered, her response was “We can’t go off verbal communication”.. and so forth.
As I told her, at the end of the day, if I would have been informed correctly at the very beginning, I could have joined another policy that I would have actually been covered on and have no issues instead of being a thousand dollars extra out of pocket. Moral of the story, you absolutely can not rely on any information given by the customer service department. You must have everything/anything in writing and if you don’t completely understand something in your insurance packets provided, seek help elsewhere.

I put my sister in Arizona on the plan in 2016. The first dentist I picked in Arizona (I live in NJ) changed the quote over and over, never cleaned my sister's teeth in 2 years, did not try to save any of my sister's teeth, refused to give a second dentist the plan and x-rays in a timely manner, hung up the phone on me, refused to deal with me and I am signed onto the plan. I PAY THE BILLS ON MY SISTER WHO IS POOR AND NOT KNOWLEDGEABLE ABOUT DENTAL CARE.
Delta Dental Insurance to date has ignored my grievance and refuses to do anything about the problems with Gateway Dental Group in Avondale, Arizona. My sister lost $772 of benefits in 2018 and I want that rolled over into her 2019 benefits. Now a $500 crown is a $3500-55000 implant. Delta Dental staff are not knowledgeable, different information. No return calls, contract only sent to my sister and not me, non-binding contact with the dentists.
Company should not be proposed by AARP. It is not acceptable insurance coverage, I have spoken with perhaps 50 Delta Dental insurance staff members. GRIEVANCE PERSON HUNG UP ON ME. UNPROFESSIONAL COMPANY. I should have been given the contract right after initiating the contract. Find another dental insurance company. This company is disorganized and disrespectful. You will have no rights. No real contract with the dentists as far as I can tell binding them to professional conduct. There is negligence. The dentist as well as the oral surgeon sent dental records along w/ X-rays confirming the implant was not a result of pre-existing periodontal disease but from a fracture. Without any medical documentation or any evidence that would support their position Delta Dental denied the claim. I wanted simple clear info in writing: did my dentist send the bill to DD or not? I asked the woman to make a note of my customer feedback: I think it's unacceptable that DD refuses to provide an email address to its customers - she refused. She said "I'm not going to make a note about anything that is negative about Delta Dental." So that's how this company operates and those are its priorities.

Delta Dental would not share how much the coverage limit is because "that's confidential information". The receptionist tells me, "Let's hope they cover most of it." Well, wasn't that a mistake. My plan covered about 10% of the treatment and I receive an unexpected $1100 bill. It'd be an understatement to say I'm mad. They must be more transparent with their coverage information so patients don't agree to treatments with the assumption they will be covered and then receive very large bills for 90% of the treatment. I thought Delta Dental was paying 90% of the bill. Turns out I'm paying 90% of it.

I am a new customer of Delta Dental and had my first ever root canal with an in-network provider. The endodontist completed the root canal in 1 visit without complications and insisted that I pay over double what was listed as the contract rare for a root canal. The first customer service rep attempted to help me by contacting the dentist and insisting upon an explanation of why I was billed so much “off the record.” Subsequently the endodontist sent a revised bill which included charges for a second visit that never transpired. Also, $55 of the charges were determined to not be billable to me. Delta Dental “accepted” as an appropriate charge a $185 misc 9999 purported procedure that was already paid in the bundled “root canal fee.”
Delta Dental insists they do not have a fraud dept and that if I want to attempt to resolve the matter... I need to file a grievance and it’s my word against the dentist’s word about whether a second visit transpired. Delta Dental also insists that I need to compel the endodontist to issue a refund for the charge I already paid that Delta Dental has acknowledged was not due from me.
Shockingly I bought this plan from AARP falsely assuming that it would protect me as a senior citizen consumer. If Delta Dental would order the dentist's notes they likely would be able to quickly identify the second visit never transpired and the work was completed during the first visit. Moreover, with minimal effort Delta Dental would be able to confirm that there were not any services performed appropriate for the rarely acceptable 9999 code. Awful experience. Do not use the term Insurance when you refer to a Delta Dental plan. It is not. At best, it is a discount plan that you buy into and a pre-payment for anticipated services that you may not even incur. Delta is not regulated by the Department of Insurance and follows none of the rules regarding transparency or good faith and fair dealing. It is a system that is designed to deceive, conceal, avoid and deflect.
Employers are able to negotiate sweetheart premiums and benefit packages with Delta that are not available to individuals. When our family was covered under an employer group plan we located a Delta Dental provider dentist. For several years we had the usual cleanings, exams and cavities. We relied upon the guidance and advice of the Delta dentist as to what the plan covered and were reassured that as a contracted Delta dentist he would accept whatever determination was made by Delta, that his staff would handle all pre-authorizations and any billing issues so that we could depend on no surprises. All worked well for routine services under the employer plan.
When we lost the job, we lost the Delta coverage and for a time our dentist billed us at the negotiated Delta fee rate. One visit, everything changed. I was told that I needed four crowns. Six months earlier, my exam was perfect. My wife had gotten a crown under the group plan so we knew what it should cost. However, as a cash paying patient, my fee was going to be 40% more. Why? The explanation from someone in whom we had placed our trust was puzzling.
If I bought back into the Delta plan, I could get the discount, the negotiated fee and under his contract with Delta he would have to accept their determination. If not, he could charge whatever he wanted. I was told to contact Delta to get signed up. Delta charged me a higher monthly fee than we had paid under the employer plan, not surprising. The benefits outlined were exactly the same including contract language about Delta contracted dentists acceptance of claims determinations. Ok. So let’s get the crowns. Not so fast.
Despite having the prior employer Delta coverage, my same Delta dentist was unable to get around the six month waiting period under the individual plan. So I waited for the needed work. At the six month mark, I asked my Delta dentist to confirm my coverage, get pre-authorization for the crowns and confirm the plan benefits so I could pay any balance and know my financial obligations. All was arranged and a written treatment plan including the Delta benefits and out of pocket was supposedly confirmed.
After the billing, claim processing and adjustments, the Delta dentist who had agreed to handle everything and that there was to be no surprise, informed me that I owed more money and refused to represent me to Delta. I completed a written dispute and appeal to Delta after many frustrating phone calls to Delta where I received conflicting advice and explanations from Delta representatives. The denial of my appeal essentially said that Delta had determined that it had paid the claim correctly and the case was closed. Again and again my Delta dentist was asked to intervene as had previously been promised.
Finally an explanation was given that although I purchased the most expensive Delta plan offered, it was not the same as as the prior employer plan, that internal agreements between Delta and its member dentists and not disclosed in my plan agreement would limit benefits to amounts less than apparent in promotional or actual plan documents. Both Delta and its contracted provider dentist refer to vague language that the patient is responsible for any balance beyond the benefits paid by Delta. This flies in the face of the representations of coverage confirmation, benefits confirmation, pre-authorization and agreed patient financials after accepting Delta’s determination as payment in full.

Just awful. I have never had worse dental insurance. Even DENTICAL--which is free CA insurance--is better than this.
1) Misleading with information: They send you a package when you first get benefits which basically discourages you from calling the company. They encourage you to pick out your dentist online. If you do call, often the operators are very rude to you and I quote them: "you need to ask the right questions." If you ask for information but do not ask a specific question regarding the information you need--they won't provide it. For example, I asked over the phone which dentists were eligible for me to see. They told me I could search for dentists online and could see any dentist on the list of search results. They FAILED to tell me that I had to specifically filter for DentaCare dentists--even though they could clearly see I had DentaCare. This is how they make their money--they leave out information so that you end up picking an incorrect provider and they don't have to cover you. When I called to complain about this, they said, "you need to ask the right questions." They told me I had never asked about DentaCare specifically--even though it was new to the insurance and did not even know what DentaCare was at the time. It is their responsibility as a company to give me information so I can make informed decisions.
2) Horrible customer service: Out of the 3 times I called, 2 of the operators were extremely rude to me. They need to remember their PLACE as a company: They are providing HUMAN SERVICES, and good customer service should be a priority. The customer is always right--repeat that mantra Delta Dental.
3) Poor ethics: I had a dentist stick his hands in my mouth without wearing gloves. This dentist was apparently assigned to me, so I called Delta Dental and requested that he be taken off of my account due to this. First of all, they were rude on the phone when I called. Second, this year I went to a different dentist and now they don't want to cover the visit because they are saying I was still assigned to that dentist. The person I had spoken to on the phone NEVER changed who I was assigned to and gave me incorrect instructions about finding a new dentist. Even though they should have a record of this call, they are saying that there is nothing they can do and will not cover the cost of the other dentist--even though I found them through the Delta Dental site.
4) AWFUL website: There is no way to check who your "assigned" dentist is on the website (no doubt another ploy so that you forget who your assigned dentist is and you accidentally go to another dentist, which means they don't have to cover the visit). Their search engine is awful because it does not automatically filter by dentists your insurance level covers. Moreover, they have 2 search pages on their site and the search results do not match. The instructions for picking your providers on their website are INCORRECT according to what they told me over the phone. Nowhere on their website (not on your profile nor electronic insurance card) does it say which dentist you are "assigned" to. Their website is bareboned and difficult to navigate and honestly really cheap considering how much money they are making off of us contributing to this insurance.
This is a company that does not care at all about the people it is covering. Do yourself a favor and switch. I am appalled that UCSD picked this company as their provider--especially considering all of the complaints against this company.

I find Delta Dental to be adequate for those who need coverage for their routine "yearly check-up and cleaning". For any other extensive procedures done, to the layman, "other" procedures are still very pricey. I recently had my yearly, and it was found that I needed a root canal and buildup on one tooth, my ending dollar responsibility was over $800.00 and that does not include the final crown/cap that will need to placed at some time in the future. I have the "high plan" which is geared toward covering more expense; I do not find this to be the case. While the cost offset is very much appreciated: I feel that the insurance is more akin to having a coupon book for certain procedures that can only be used once per year, for the other that routine cleanings.
I pay somewhere in the neighborhood of $432.00 a year for this insurance, which when cost compared to simply paying out of pocket for the yearly exam (which most people use) is more than the actual cost of most dentists' charge for an uninsured patient. Delta needs to reevaluate their formulary to better address those who may occasionally come across an unexpected procedure needed. If I had other options for my family I would certainly entertain them. Will continue with Delta, as something is better than nothing, but sincerely feel the coverage could/should be more comprehensive.

I have had Delta Dental insurance for years. Each year the premiums have gone up and their percentage of payment has gone down. I have had the same dentist nearly 20 years, and last year they reimbursed less than 25% of my care. Honestly, if I had the premiums in my pocket I would have been better off than what they reimbursed. My experience at this point is that no dental insurance is better than Delta Dental insurance.

I called in Delta Dental on 12/17/2018 and enrolled the premium plan directly in the morning about 10am. I gave my auto- pay authorization and the representative said they charged $234.28 right away. After 3 hours, I changed my mind and wanted to cancel my policy and called in for cancellation. The same representative answered and she told me she cancelled my policy but refund will take normally about 8 to 10 weeks and there is no further action or paperwork I need to do nothing further for cancellation.
On 1/6/2019, I received the policy packet by mail so I called them back to make sure my policy had been canceled. The person on the phone checked my name and told me that my name is not in their system. So I assumed the cancellation had been done already. On 2/1/2019, I received auto pay notice for March insurance from them by mail. When I called them, they told me that the cancellation was never done and it has been active all these months. She said I only make a call to them on 1/6 to make sure my policy is active. That was not my conversation with them. Anyway, they refused to refund the money even if I called in for cancellation 3 hours of enrollment which was illegal.

Unless you have coverage through an employer, DO NOT purchase a Delta Dental plan. First of all, I purchased a basic plan because I don't usually need extensive work. I wanted only to cover for my 2 exams and cleanings each year. The cost of the premiums for this however, would clearly cost more than if I paid for these out of pocket. Plus, they want a 50.00 deductible on top of the premiums each year.
So, I stupidly signed up for a plan that began in December 2018. I then had my checkup at a cost of 151.00. I ended up with a 97.00 balance after Delta paid. When I called for clarification, because I thought exams and cleanings were "free" each year, I was told it was because my dentist was a "Premiere" dentist so, the charges reflected the excess of his bill plus my 50.00 deductible. To add injury to insult, the deductible was applied to 2018 so, I now have to meet another deductible for 2019. My premiums were 34.00/mo for 2 cleanings a year, plus the 50.00. I was also informed that should I need major work now, I can't even use insurance for it until April, meaning I am paying premiums for nothing.
I would much rather pocket that money and pay for anything I might need on my own. Major work would only be covered 50% anyway so, I will now have 450.00/yr in saved premiums and deductibles if that should happen. Anyway, it's such a scam requiring that I pay for insurance that won't cover anything until April. That is six months of premiums before they will even cover half of, on a handful of services. I canceled the policy today. Just take care of your teeth!

I just joined Delta Dental in late November 2018 and wish I never saw the recommendation on the AARP website about them. First I had to pay in advance for two months (December 2018 and January 2019) on a credit card which I did. This is supposedly to show our credibility. I found that odd and never heard of such a practice from a company I never heard of. Obviously a trust issue.
On January 26, 2019, they auto billed me in advance for the February payment with no notice when I was expecting to pay manually in February. Somewhere along the line a manual payment by myself was changed to auto pay. I don't do auto pays because past experience has proven some companies will take the money too early. I wasn't expecting it and their withdrawal created a hardship because I had other expenses more important than a dental plan I haven't even used yet.
Getting a hold of these people at Delta Dental is a real lesson in patience and frustration. Each time I went to their website to send a message it was done on the main website. Responses from them could only be found on a separate website that required a totally different user name and password. I found that ridiculous because I only got their response without my original message so I had no proof of what I asked. They should have Secure Messaging like other websites of better design than theirs. Often the links in their messages didn't work which added to the frustration. If I was lucky to get a response it was usually very brief and meaningless, and never answered the question. Terrible system.
My experience has shown me this is a "hands off" business that doesn't seem to care about their customers which is why I had to play the multiple automated phone game before finally reaching someone. I cancelled my service with Delta Dental around January 26, 2019 because I find their services horrible and they don't care about their customers. They responded on January 29. I'm not sure of the exact date of cancellation because of the message system. The website is terrible and I found no way to print to a PDF file unless I did a Control P.
Today, January 31, 2019, I called to inquire as to when I was going to receive my refund for January especially since my auto payment has already posted. I was told I had to wait three weeks after this date to receive it. I said it took them no time to take my money before it was even due and it was not supposed to be automatically deducted so why should I have to wait three weeks. The woman I talked to acted as if she didn't care and was rude from the beginning.
I don't recommend any company who only seems to care about money and not the one paying it. I can't wait for my AARP account to expire because I'm not renewing that either. I would rather have no dental insurance than stay with this company. What a mistake and loss of $120+ just to prove reliability. I prefer paying out of pocket. At least I have control of my own money.

I paid every month and every month, received a threat of cancellation, and would sometimes be canceled (regardless of payment) and would have to call to be reinstated. Was told it was a glitch going back 3 years when one payment was missed (when my automatic payment was on a card that had just expired but I took care of it right away).
After calling so many times to speak with representatives and managers who swore to fix the problem (and sometimes temporarily succeeded) , I would inevitably get another cancellation notice even if I had paid recently. It became ridiculous and laughable, and I went to the dentist for a cleaning and x-rays and paid out of pocket because I KNEW that even though I was current, there would be a big fight with Delta saying I wasn’t covered. My blood pressure could not take it anymore, and I want nothing to do with those incompetent fools. I feel awful for anyone who has had procedures they expect to be covered. Delta Dental has a 10 year replacement clause. We replaced some missing teeth with a bridge and the consultant says the bridge has a poor prognosis. The teeth are not mobile and there is no gum disease. This is a ploy to get out of paying on the procedure. At very least they should pay on a replacement partial because the one she is wearing is not replaceable. This would be like a doctor giving a patient a motorized wheelchair and the insurance doesn't pay on motorized and only want to pay on the non motorized chairs so they refuse to pay on anything. TERRIBLE just TERRIBLE!

I work in billing and coding and if my insurances that I work with give me a quote that is the amount they pay they can’t make up the rules as they play the game. Delta Dental is truly a waste of time. I’m going to request that my company start looking for other dental coverage. They should be required to pay what they say they will when they give the quote over the phone. And doctors and dentists can’t understand why we don’t come in regularly. Well maybe because we can't afford both the cost of the insurance and ridiculous amounts we have to pay!

I'm sorry, but shouldn't we be working TOGETHER?! This delays a patient's treatment time, especially if they came in as an emergency. I sent an email about the claim and it was never followed up by Delta (supposedly 3-5 days for reply). Every time I take my sons to the dentist they can't receive service because it's showing under my dental plan they are not covered. When they don't go to the dentist then they are covered. They don't want to pay for anything but they want your money. When my son went to the dentist finally he received services, but when the claim form came it came in my other son's name. So I was called then and told them then they gonna tell me my son was not covered under my insurance, then I saw said. "Why y'all putting the claim firm in my other son's name when he has not been to the dentist yet." Smh. Then my son that they said was covered under my insurance finally went to the dentist. When we got there they said it's showing up that he is not covered under my insurance.
Then I called Delta Dentist from there. They said he was not covered but my other son was. I got real mad??? I told that lady on the phone that, "Two weeks ago I talked to you all and y'all said he was covered but my other son was not, now you telling me he is not covered but my other son is." They really are a terrible dental company. I tried to tell them that both of my sons are on my dental insurance. They have been since I got it. They told me I had to go to corporate at my Job to get it fix. I went to them and they said, "Your boys been covered since the beginning of the year," which I already knew. They do not want to pay so when they find out you got a dental appointment they will have it to show you or your family members are not covered so they do not have to pay for it. But then when you don't go to the dentist it shows up you are covered. I will not be dealing with them next year. Please don't waste your time on them.

I went to PPO plan dentist the next day and was told I had a "waiting period of 6 months". The Delta salesmen knew I had an appt with the dentist the next day and in fact said "I get calls from patients sitting in the parking lot of dental offices needing urgent coverage all the time". This is normal. He never mentioned any wait period.
My Costco plan would have been covered thru an HMO dentist, but Delta cancelled that plan and left me with a much more expensive plan and NO coverage. The dentist even said that this is "normal" for Delta and to call and fight the wait period. Of course I did, and no manager that could take the call. The sales guy and his assistant who "expedited" the new plan and sent our enrollee ID's to the dentist. They don't return emails and of course Delta won't give out a direct number for them. If you come in for X-rays, PREVENTATIVE cleaning (not a SCRP, or deep cleaning) and exam, those claims will be paid on your behalf promptly. BEWARE of Delta Dental's claims department for ANY treatment you may need. It takes hours to get a hold of a representative, 9 times out of 10 they are rude or don't understand the question. If the call "disconnects" they don't call back, despite asking for number for that very reason. They will tell you a claim is processing (after you've provided the requested info multiple times) and they need no further info and to allow time for processing.
I call on our offices claims every week on Wednesdays and I can't tell you how many times I've been told a claim is good to process and then a week later they want/NEED new, completely different additional info. Even as petty as to make you change the address of the insured patient's insurance in our computer system in order to process the claim. (They won't process at least 5 outstanding claims due to the address on the claim form, even though that address is the claims dept address!) Let's face it. Insurance, especially dental, is a scam. We've all been tricked into believing it's a necessity so that we can slack off and avoid actually managing our finances. It's pretty simple. Insurance companies make a business of paying out less than what people pay in. American Society acted crazy when Amazon bought a grocery store for $13 Billion, but nobody bats an eye when AETNA was sold last year for $69 billion. It was barely even news. That said, I work in a family dental practice that has been in business for 30+ years. Insurance payments make up 90% of our revenue, and Delta Dental is the biggest player in the game. We dislike dealing with insurance vampires so much that we have removed our practice from every PPO... except Delta Dental. Most government or public employers use Delta Dental. So it would be business suicide to not be linked to them.
Our fees are some of the lowest in the city, but Delta Dental still generally requires us to adjust 30-60% off most treatment plans. Even so, it's EXTREMELY RARE that Delta Dental will cover 100% of a patient's costs (outside of basic cleanings), especially if the plan is provided by an employer. We see about 12 Delta Dental patients a day, and usually only 6 people a year have their full amount paid for by their insurance. These people have purchased their own high-dollar plans for this benefit.
If your employer does not offer insurance and you are considering Delta Dental, may I suggest just creating your own savings account? Put your insurance premiums in there instead. You could even safely invest it so it generates a return. That's what insurance companies are doing with YOUR money. Berkshire Hathaway owns Geico, which has helped Warren Buffet become the wealthiest investor the world has ever seen!
Afraid of runaway costs? Find a small dental practice and talk to them about financial arrangements. If paying cash, our office would gladly adjust the fees for you. I'd gladly even make the same adjustments Delta Dental would require, so you pay less. Then get Care Credit or set up a monthly payment plan. - It's win win. The patient pays less than what they would pay in overall premiums to Delta Dental, and the dental office actually gets paid without having to fight any vampires. Just a thought...

In 2018 I had two implants in my lower left jaw. The Dentist calculated my out of pocket expense and what the normal or standard coverage would be through Delta. Several months later they informed me that I owe the balance of $1365.00 because Delta only pays for implants for those 19 years of age and younger. The online benefits summary tells me that Delta will pay 50-80% of implant related cost, depending on the dentist.
When I called Delta they informed me that the welcome brochure they sent me almost 2 years ago clearly stated the 19 year age limit. I pointed out that there was absolutely no information about any age limit in the only benefits summary. They refused to comment on that fact. I asked to speak to a manager. None was available and supposedly one will call me later. At the end of the call the Delta representative said "thanks for letting me make you smile". Total ripoff. My dentist has spoken with their consultant, who, by the way, is a part-time dentist who works only 4-5 hours a week reviewing all claims. Their response is I could get a removable partial for cheaper. They dictate the quality of life you will have by manipulation.
Plus although schedule shows they pay a certain percentage -- they have a maximum they will pay, which is not to scale for the normal charge. Delta received the claim on July 12. As it appeared to still be "in process," I called Delta asking about the claim. I paid out of pocket for the services when they were performed (almost $1600). I was advised that it can take up to 30 days to process a claim. I then spoke to someone at Delta on July 26 who indicated they needed the date the BC policy became effective (over 10 years ago). My 5 year old had a tough time with her teeth as most had some decay. It took 7 trips to the children's hospital to get her teeth drilled, filled and capped. With each session she needed "sleepy juice" to sedate her. On the last trip to fix her front teeth the dentist suggested we try scaling back the decay since she'll soon lose her front teeth. I thought this was a wise, less invasive choice and was hoping to save a little money avoiding more crowns. The procedure was quick and relatively easy compared to previous work. When I received the bill from Delta and the dentist I was shocked to discover that none of this scaling was covered as it was coded as odontoplasty - a procedure typically utilized for aesthetic reasons to improve tooth appearance.
When I called Delta there was no wiggle room even though my daughter's procedure was done to remove decay. They hide behind their bureaucratic rules and won't allow the nuances of a situation to affect their decision. It was coded as odontoplasty and that's how it was billed. By the time I could get appointment with another dentist, it was July so Delta invoked their unwritten hidden fraudulent rule and told me I was not eligible to the promised "two cleanings in 12 months" because there has to be minimum of 6 months between them. If you keep Delta long enough, you will be in same situation fighting the calendar to get your promised coverage. Customer support will not budge on this and whine at you to not yell at them for their fraudulent criminal cheating behavior. In MANY cases, Delta is more expensive than paying dentist directly.

Delta Dental Insurance refuses to correct miscoded claim of a partial denture although they are aware that this code is incorrect and the Dentist office admitted on April 3, 2018 that they did not give me the more expensive metal frame partial that was coded. The miscode is to Delta Dental’s advantage because it prevents me from getting any other service to the upper arch.
Bay Ridge Management Corp., Cosmetic & Implant center, ** located at 7708nFourth Ave., Brooklyn NY 11209 sent Delta Dental Insurance claim#** using code D5213 on 9/08/2014. Maxillary partial denture- cast metal framework with resin denture bases (including any conventional clasps, rests and teeth). ** knows that this does not describe my partial. Mine has no metal and seems to be made entirely of nylon or acrylic-vinyl material made for only one side of the arch. My current dentist states the partial ** made for teeth 3,4,5 is a Nesbit. The correct code for the Nesbit provided me by Cosmetic & Implant Center is D1520 (space maintainer- removable – unilateral) only on one side of the arch.
Delta Dental states that they already paid ** of Bay Ridge Management Corporation $750. July 28, 2017 I received a letter from Delta Dental states I had to ask the dentist to correct the code. I requested them to change it to the correct code a year ago. On April 3, 2018, they finally answered my BBB complaint stating that they gave me a more conservative less expensive partial with no metal (The Nesbit).
I was not aware of the problem with the code until on or about June 1 2017, when I received a pretreatment denial Claim ** for my damaged bridge for teeth 12,3,14 on the opposite side of the arch. Which says I am responsible for the entire $2250 instead of %50 or $1125. I have been fighting this decision ever since. I had to pay the entire balance of the $2250 for replacement of the damaged bridge on teeth 12, 13, 14 which was completed Oct 20, 2017. Cosmetic & Implant center, **, D.D.S & Associates or Delta Dental Insurance Company need to correct the code so Delta Dental Ins can approve the claim and reimburse me $1125 paid by me that should have been paid by Delta Dental.
DELTA DENTAL DENTIST HANDBOOK states under Prosthodontics- Removable codes (D5000-D5899) 19: Placement of a removable partial denture and a fixed bridge for the same arch will not be considered for benefit allowance. Use of a code using these numbers is the problem. Its use will cause me not to be able to file a future or current claim on the same arch. I believe this is the reason Delta Dental will not change the code to the correct code of D1520.
After my present dentist sent in claim for my bridge on teeth 12,13,&14, I once again requested Delta Dental to pay that claim. Claim ** for the completed bridge was denied. I received a letter from Delta Dental dated June 1, 2018 telling me they have no jurisdiction over Dr. ** of Bay Ridge Management Corporation because they are a non-member. (Even though they corrected other issues and gone after other money owed by this company when it’s in their favor.) **, who is a member, is the original dentist that was working on this partial. He made such a mass ordering a horrible partial with the metal that would not fit my mouth instead of the Nesbit I had originally asked for.

6/26/18 received tooth implant, as per the Delta PDF bylaws they will pay either the cheaper of two options (bridge, or denture). Well they paid 0, and I'm stuck with $2,774 bill. They further stated in their denial letter "AN IMPLANT PROSTHESIS IS COVERED ONLY IF THE EXISTING PROSTHESIS WAS PLACED AT LEAST 5 YEARS PRIOR TO REPLACEMENT." I lost a tooth from a cracked root that needed replacement, my Dentist and Oral Surgeon can't believe the denied claim. What I also noted on their denial statement they don't include their phone number. I guess they just want are premium and when they deny coverage they don't want to hear back from us. I am intending on pursuing this matter to the attorney general's office as well.

They cover 2 exams, 2 sets of x-rays and 2 cleanings each year. But 1 FM Radiograph every 5 years. I spoke to Kayla at Delta Dental benefits 877-377-5727 complaining about them not paying for my x-rays and that it seemed the full mouth x-rays are never covered on me. Here's what I discovered. The way they've cheated (but she wont use that term) consumers is their internal rule on the cost of x-rays your dentist takes during a routine exam. I recently found out that they bundled a certain amount of x-rays into one full mouth (FM Radiograph). If it's submitted on the same day, and the total payout for them is as much as one FM Radiograph. So your x-ray set that would have been free turns out to be a charge, because you most likely had an event in the past 5 years that they had counted as an FM Radiograph.
And here's a related cheating scheme. If during a year, you've exceeded your plan maximum of $2000, anything above that you'd pay, but would still count against your benefit. For example, that FM Radiograph, and any other services you ended up paying for because the $2000 payout had been reached previously, would still count against your remaining benefits. Thus, you won't be able to get another FM Radiograph paid until 5 years is up starting from the date you most recently paid for it when the maximum was reached.
Word to the wise - call them and ask each time you go to the dentist what you are entitled to in details, and work out any scenario to make sure the dentist won't submit anything that you could lose future benefits on. The average person don't have a clue on this unless they spend much time researching, and Delta Dental laughs all the way to the bank. Any class action lawyer out there? Go after Delta Dental and teach them a lesson.

I have received dental coverage through my employer. Recently had a bridge done. An estimate was given as usual. This time however they denied my claim because apparently I now have a "poor prognosis" so I get a bill for over 14 hundred dollars. I've already paid over 3 thousand out of pocket. What's the point of having insurance if they don't cover anything. Stay clear of them.

I lived in Florida in 2014 and had Delta Dental through my employer. Our benefits had a $1000.00 for orthodontics. I got Invisalign for my daughter and recently I called her orthodontist who we actually still commute to Florida to finish her service. They said Delta Dental only paid $500.00. I called Delta Dental and was told they only pay $500.00 then the next year they pay the other $500.00. So since I had moved before the second year of service, even though we had the coverage at the time she got the Invisalign, they refuse to pay the other $500.00. It is a total ripoff. None of us employees were told this nor was it in our benefit package.

Do not buy dental insurance with Delta Dental Insurance company. You will be sorry if you do because the insurance is worthless: I bought an individual dental insurance with Delta Dental Insurance. Policy name is Delta Dental PPO Individual. On their website they advertise that the policy I bought will pay 100% for General cleaning twice per year. That what I am looking for. My first cleaning happened on 4/20/18. This cleaning I have done for many years with the same dentist. My past Humana Medicare Advantage Insurance paid the full amount for this cleaning twice per year no problem.
Today 4/30/18 Delta Dental insurance company sent me an email itemizing my cleaning bill. They agree to pay only $28.00 out of a total general cleaning charge of $134.00. They wrote that only one item in the general cleaning bill fall within my insurance coverage and there is a $50 deductible on that item. The rest is my responsibility. I end up responsible for $106.00 of the $134.00 total bill. They never disclose those limits on their website. The only thing they post on the policy that I bought is general cleaning will be covered 100% twice per year. Call them and I was putting on waiting and nobody ever answer the phone. After waiting for 20 minutes I hang up. I feel so embarrassed that I not only wasting my money but also my precious time to deal with this total worthless, dishonest company. It set up only to steal people money. Don't be a victim like I am.

My advice is to stay as far away as you can from this den of thieves. Needing to have some dental work done after several years of neglect, I chose and paid the annual premium for Delta Dental's top of the line program. I was quoted pricing examples for a variety of procedures and thought this coverage best fit my needs. I then visited my dentist for examination and development of a dental health plan. During this visit, I was told the actual prices I would be paying for each procedure. Under Delta Dental's plan, the cost of every procedure was significantly higher than what I had been led to believe when purchasing the plan. My dentist had his own plan, which reduced the cost of my procedures significantly.
Before having any dental work done under Delta's plan, I called to ask them to cancel my policy. I was told policies could not be cancelled after ten days and it was the twelfth day of my policy. I then sent a memo on Delta's website saying I understood there were costs associated with initiating the policy and was will to pay one to two months' premiums to cover this cost if they would refund the remaining policy premiums. I then received a letter from Delta stating my policy length is one year and cannot be canceled. However, at the end of twelve months my policy will be canceled and I will not be eligible to renew after that (As if I would want to). This experience has left me frustrated and angry with Delta Dental, a totally untrustworthy company that illustrates the corporate greed rampant throughout much of our health insurance industry.

Delta Dental consistently sends my reimbursement to the provider even though I am filling out my own claim forms and sending them a receipt to show that I have already paid the provider (which I should not need to do) and I’ve never given authorization for Tricare DD to pay my dental benefits to anyone other than myself. When I call and ask Delta to send my money back to me Delta tells me I have to chase down the money and retrieve it from the person they have sent it to. Even when that provider had no entitlement to the money! If the provider refuses I can access other channels to pursue it. That is wrong! They have removed my right to file and be reimbursed for my own dental benefits.
They are also very difficult to work with. Many providers won’t even deal with them. When I say Delta they say, go somewhere else (When I am paying them out of network cash!). That is why I am forced to file my own insurance. I have to ask them for the Dr’s Id number for claim and they usually won’t provide it. The dental office says, "either we file it or we won’t give you our tax Id for Delta." This is because they have made so many enemies. Delta will find any bogus reason why they won’t process a claim. Most people that I have spoken with at Delta are very limited. I have had Delta Dental Retiree dental program since for 10 years and it's getting worst every year. This company does not see the subscriber as the customer. Delta Dental sees the Federal Government as their customer and as long as the money rolls in they have no further obligation to the subscriber or beneficiary.

How is it possible that customer service has devolved into this? A lovely woman who is a 'representative' cannot comprehend this: "I am calling to find out what it will cost me on my plan for a cleaning, having used up my two free cleanings per year." She could not process the question. "COST. Can you help me?" She couldn't so she put me on hold and finally I had the good sense to hang up. Ten minute on hold and baffled by what must be again - passive aggressive low paid workers who act out by frustrating consumers. OK. Who owns stock in this? Dump!

Delta Dental is THE WORST!!! Take my word for it, and just go elsewhere. No matter the cost. After carefully selecting a plan, I chose one with a higher premium due to there not being a waiting period. I have gotten a lot of major work done in the past month, and Delta Dental has denied my claims. When I called, they stated that there is a 6-12 month waiting period, and that they are not responsible for what the Healthcare Marketplace did or did not say. Why in the world would there be a 12 month waiting period FOR A POLICY THAT ONLY LASTS 12 MONTHS!!! Now I'm stuck with a high premium, and this ridiculous bill from my dentist. This is complete BS, and a complete rip off. The "American Dream," that people speak so highly of, seems more like a nightmare to me.

Recently Johns Hopkins went with Delta Dental. The selection of dentists is very poor. The dentist many employees have used for years will only accept the "premier" plan due to poor reimbursement and is only covered by 80% while this "premier plan" was touted as no deductible, 100% coverage for many procedures it only applies to the doctors on their list who are limited. Hopkins definitely made a poor choice going with Delta Dental.
