The bed has gotten to be uncomfortable due to the mattress cover and various foam pieces deteriorating over the course of six years. These items are not covered by warranty, and in my opinion, are not properly designed to stand up to very many years of use. The air bed portion probably will last forever. They appear to have done okay with that part. Unfortunately, the mattress cover for a king size model 5000 is almost $800 and not covered at all by warranty. These problems, the discomfort while sleeping on your side (hip pain), and the trench/middle issue lead me to highly discourage anyone from buying a Select Comfort bed. You may enjoy the bed initially. We did. But you'll be disappointed later and will find no support from the company. Don't be fooled by the warranty. The bed will wear out and you'll be looking for a real bed.
Select Comfort: Sorry guys...I called you and gave you a chance to respond, but your answers were all about spending more money with you. A hybrid bed having an air chamber surrounded by more traditional mattress construction would be much better.
When you buy these $1,000+++ beds, be aware that you are not getting much more than an air mattress, a bunch of foam, a plastic foundation, and a mattress cover that will wear out. If you are okay with spending the money on something that will last three or four years, then go for it. And some folks will be okay with that. I was hoping for more durability. It's NOT a lifetime or long-term sleeping solution. Oh...and my $100+ pillow from them is useless after six years. Spend your money on down or some other foam pillow for less money.

We purchased a SELECT COMFORT bed and also the LEGGETT & PLATT ADJUSTABLE SLEEP SYSTEM two years ago. One half of the unit stopped functioning about a year ago and now the other half has ceased to work (at all). I called Select Comfort who disclaimed any responsibility for the defective product and the problems we are having after having said what a good addition it would be for us and that they had had not ONE complaint or problem with the adjustable bed as it says there is a twenty-year warranty on the product but it's not as easy as that.
To repair our bed which we paid over $4000.00 for, we must now pay an additional $400 plus shipping/handling and freight charges to correct our problem and on top of that we have to hire someone to install it and pay that fee as well. So we are out another $300 to correct something that should not have broken in the first place. This was bought for comfort and at this point is anything but. We trusted the salesperson and their "selected" customer satisfaction reports that we find out are rewritten by the company as they see fit. We have no recourse other than to write a notice here.
We are on a fixed income, have lost our retirement in this cesspool of financial chaos and with no "bailout" for us in sight. We are stuck with a useless, non-functioning adjustable bed. The sad thing about all this is my wife goes in for surgery tomorrow and could have benefited from the bed had it worked properly. It is a shame that companies such as LEGGETT & PLATT are allowed such freedom to take advantage of consumers under the cover of a twenty-year warranty that is bogus.

My boyfriend and I thought it would be a great idea to go into the store of Select Comfort and try out one of their beds. I loved it. It was so comfortable, so we went ahead and purchased a bed from them. BAD IDEA. BIGGEST MISTAKE OF MY LIFE. My boyfriend and I decided a week before the bed was delivered that we could not afford the bed at all and that we had purchased it on impulse, so we cancelled the delivery. We had also purchased a comforter and sheet set for the queen size bed for $216.00 - a ripoff with no return. My bed is a king size, so I still have them sitting in a bag. Well, I thought, okay, big deal, maybe I can give them as a gift or something.
Well anyways, we bought the bed in July of 2008 and cancelled a week later. I started getting bills in the mail for $4,500 from GE Money Bank. I was thinking it was all squared away and cancelled, so I called GE Money Bank. They said that Select Comfort had never sent them the credit for the bed. So I called Select Comfort, and they said they would send GE Money Bank an email and the credit.
Another month went by, and I'm still getting bills for $4,500 plus interest and late fees, so I called Select Comfort again. They said they will send the credit. Now we were getting into September and I'm still getting bills from GE Money Bank. Finally, Select Comfort, after three months, sent over the credit for the bed only, not the FINANCE CHARGES AND LATE FEES that had been occurring, so once again, I'm getting a bill in the mail from GE Money Bank for $600. I wondered why, when my comforter and sheets were only $215.00? They said it was all LATE FEES and finance charges, because I was not making a minimum payment, but why should I make a minimum payment on an amount that I don't even owe?
Well, I refuse to pay the $600. I offered to pay $215.00, which is what I owe for the merchandise, but they will not take the money. They refused it and said they will settle for $390. So unfair. I've called both places. Speaking to Select Comfort supervisors, they said there's nothing they can do. Well, yeah, there is: why don't they pay for the finance charges and late charges on my account, which all accrued because they took three months to credit the account?
I'm on the verge of a nervous breakdown over it, and to top it off, I CAN'T EVEN USE THE MERCHANDISE BECAUSE THEY WON'T EXCHANGE IT FOR A KING SIZE COMFORTER. My boyfriend and I now have all of these on our credit report, and we are now being hassled every day with phone calls from GE Money Bank. The amount just keeps going up and up. DON'T EVER DO BUSINESS WITH THIS COMPANY.

I made a point to read as much as I could about this bed before purchase. I read (what were mostly) complaints, I read praise and I spoke with a number of personal friends who had the bed. My issue, as it stands right now, is appalling customer service and exceptionally bad judgment. My bed was delivered today, as promised. Four out of a possible four decking panels (foundation) were damaged. One so badly that were I to place a mattress on top of it, there is no question that the bottom of the mattress would be torn.
We will send out the replacements in 7 to 10 working days. After asking to speak with a supervisor (which was refused), I was told it would be expedited - meaning 5-7 business days. Expedited when I am sleeping ON THE FLOOR means same day delivery. Living in an apartment, I had to take a day off from work to receive this shipment. Now I am looking at another leave day to receive the replacement parts. Four simple pieces of cardboard protecting the corners of the panel pieces would have eliminated all of this wasted time, effort and fuel. If this is the best they can do, from day one, I can only imagine (well I've read some of the above complaints) what I am in for in the future.

We purchased this Sleep Number bed just over 4 years ago. We have had complaints about it ever since! About 1 year ago, we noticed the thick foam on top of the air chambers was split down the middle, so we called Select Comfort customer service. They replaced the foam (for a price) and asked if the corner supports were okay. I checked and yes, the corner supports looked fine. It seemed the only trouble was the thick foam. There is a 20-year guarantee on this bed, but it depends on how many years ago you purchased it... It will still cost you a percentage (more and more each passing year) for parts.
So we were happy to receive the new foam piece and thought this would solve the trouble we were having with rolling to the middle of the bed and feeling as though we are sleeping on a hill. It did not. It is still awful! We hate this bed and we have now taken the mattress out of our motor home and put it on TOP of this entire bed. It still doesn't help! I am still sleeping on a hill and having terrible back problems. Both my husband and myself are. I also do not sleep well at all. I dread having to go to bed at night. We were going to call Select Comfort again today.
I was looking up their phone number on the computer when I ran across this site. Now see we are not the only customers dissatisfied! We were just discussing it and we are going to file complaints about this bed and go buy a new bed today... NOT a Select Comfort!! I would never recommend this bed to anyone and I cannot believe Lindsey Wagner would advertise to sell such a piece of garbage! All we want is a good night's sleep.

Black mold was our problem with the Sleep Number Bed by Select Comfort. It is important that you weigh in your options. They refused to take back our mattress with mold in it that had me choking and suffocating for about 6 months. I found this company that sells the same type of bed made of urethane and they don't have the mold problems. Here it is Sleep Number bed. Why would any company continue to use a product they are going to have mold in it?

We bought a Sleep Number 6000 bed on 12/21/08 and it was a big mistake! The guy we bought it from was a great talker and the bed we received feels nothing like the bed we laid on in the store. We received it on 1/5/09 and got it set up and decided to try it out and we laid there for several hours and we sank in the middle. It's like it doesn't have the right support for the middle of the bed. I called the guy we bought it from and he said, "If the other person is heavier, you would do that." Well, that wasn't told to us in the store nor did it happen in the store!
So he says to customer service, "This is a rare issue," which I know he was lying because I had already read the complaints before I contacted him and I also told him I just read this is a revolving issue. He says there is nothing he has heard. So I called customer service and I told the lady there I felt like there wasn't any support in the middle if it were sagging in the middle. She says, "No, that's not it," and she also says, "If the other person is heavier..." So I say once again, "So what I said was right. There needs to be more support in the middle to take care of that problem." She then says, "Well, I will send some more foam and put that under the heavier person and it should take care of the problem." We will receive that she says, in 5 to 7 days.
It's the first night to sleep on my new 6000 and they say you will wake up refreshed and have slept like never before... I had the worst night. My back hurt and I tossed and turned all night and the smell was so strong it was unbearable!!! I suggest not buying this bed. It's not worth the money. I knew I should just have gone with the Tempur-Pedic like I originally wanted. BEWARE; THIS BED IS NOT WHAT IT'S CRACKED UP TO BE!

We bought this bed about two years ago. I had lower lumbar surgery and thought it was the best bed out there. Now my wife and I are having second thoughts. My wife has always disliked it and has switched bedrooms. Now I'm thinking she's right. When we sleep on it, the hump in the middle is so annoying. We then both complain about hip pain while sleeping on our sides. The pressure points are a problem. It's becoming very problematic. I think we're going to dump this bed and look for something else. The bed is good for the first year or so, but then the problems begin. Sorry to say.

All the complains about the Select Comfort bed is the same we are experiencing. My wife and I have had terrible back problems and spend money to see a chiropractor. We do have different settings on the chambers. She likes it soft and I like it firm, so like others' experience, you fall to the center or one side of the bed - either center or out. They sent us a foam to put in the middle, but all it does is bunch up on the foot of the bed and becomes a lump underneath. It does not help at all. We had this bed for about 3 years and put up with it because we spent so much money on it. We don't have much money to just buy another bed. It has been a terrible mistake to buy this bed.
Select Comfort should change their advertisement that it's a great bed, when all it does is give you backaches! So we should advertise that if you want to keep a terrible back pain all the time, buy a Select Comfort bed! This type of bed is really for the birds. I will never buy another one and would not recommend it to anybody. We bought ours for $1,500 too and it's out of warranty, but still the company should find a way to solve the problems.

It is so amazingly interesting to read these complaints!! My husband and I purchased a king size select comfort bed some 20+ years ago. At that time, the in home trial was 90 days. And thank goodness, because it took us that long to find all the things we did not like about it. The middle partition became a major roadblock to all aspects of our sleeping together!! The foam block, or whatever it was, prevented us from touching each other while at the same time it was a mountain should you decide to climb over!! The perimeter of the bed made it impossible to sit on the edge to do simple things like put on a shoe or a sock.
Unlike a regular bed, there was no longer a right or wrong side of the bed to get up on!! As for the dual controls and choosing your sleep number, that seemed to be a nightly challenge. The numbers did not remain consistent in that what was perfect one night, was no longer perfect the next night. Also, the numbers seemed to slip during the night. I don't recall ever finding the right number for us. We did not have any mechanical issues with the bed during the 90 day trial period, just oddities that were not in a regular bed. Since we could never seem to adjust to it, we returned it sometime during the trial period. Sure hope some of you folks did not get our bed as a recycle!!!
Well, at any rate, now that we are older, heavier and have more aches and pains, we are considering the unthinkable. Yes, we thought we might give it another try!! However, we will heavily reconsider this after reading all your complaints. It sounds like the basic construction has not changed or improved as we had hoped. In fact, things sound worse to me! I guess for now, we will continue to climb the small ladder to our current king which is hard as a brick, but laden with inches and inches of extra foam and padding. We shall continue to dream the impossible dream of a good night's sleep! Happy New Year to all and to all a good night!!

My husband back hurt on the set we had, so we went to the Arcadia Mall and saw the Select Comfort bed. When we first got it home it felt better than our other beds but, that feeling on Select Comfort did not last longer than a year. Even with all the doctors and the bed my husband’s back got worse it was so bad the doctors said he needed surgery. Four surgeries. They tried every medication, physical therapy, chiropractor and an acupuncture nothing helped. Before the neck surgery they had to do carpal tunnel on both wrist 6 weeks apart so they would know the neck surgery was working.
We continued to sleep in the Select Comfort his neck after surgery in less than 8 months started to act up again. He was set up for lower lumbar back surgery. Two weeks after that surgery he started having problems walking, his balance was so bad I would find him flat on his back due to his balance. He hit his head so many times on concrete and hardwood floors he had to have so many stitches. His doctor was referred as the best orthopedic surgeon in Southern CA. It finally got so bad the paramedic had to rush him to the hospital.
He was in the hospital 42 days. He could not get out of bed. He was 57 years old and on the 40th day they had to put him on life support. After all those falls they scanned everything except giving him a CAT scan where they found damage from the falls that caused brain death. I did not believe the Select Comfort was the problem until the same areas that hurt on him have become unbearable on me. I'm still have the Select Comfort but, I have tried the 3 other beds with no help. The doctor said the damage was already done. I may be able to get surgery that could help and is non-evasive. What did I lose besides my best friend, love of my life. I'm now on Social Security Disability. My husband's death ended his income leaving me financially in hard shape. Not being able to work. There is a strong chance I will lose my home of 14 years.

I purchased a Select Comfort 4000 bed and have since become dissatisfied with it. I went to the Select Comfort website to see if there were any customer reviews and I noticed, they claim what more than 5 million people now know insinuating 5 million happy owners? When I looked at the reviews, there were only 9 listed for the 4000 series bed, and they were all positive. So, I thought it would be useful to share my experience by posting my own review. When I read their disclaimer about reviews, they essentially say that they can and will do whatever they want with anything you submit. Meaning, they can edit, delete, modify, not post (or if you write something really nice) use it in advertising, without any royalty to you... Hardly an open and credible forum for discussion. I suppose it's perfectly legal, but very deceptive, and should be considered a criminal offense. I'm sure there are a lot of, now, unhappy owners of SC beds that were swayed by the positive reviews, when they may not have made the purchase if they had access to a more comprehensive list of reviews. They should be forced to post all or none.

I purchased my Select Comfort 5000 bed about 7 or 8 years ago and have never had any problems with it. However, I just took the bed apart to move it and found mold on both air chambers and on the foam cover that goes over the mattresses. I have been sick with chronic sinuses and chest infections over the last year and a half. I thought it was just my getting older and due to my work. Now after finding this mold, I am concerned that my health issues are due to the mold. Thank God I have not had my boyfriend of three months spend the night here yet. He has cancer and, if the mold is affecting me, just imagine what it would do to him!
I called the Select Comfort customer center and I must say that both Wendy and John were friendly, professional and concerned. They are sending me new insides which they assure me have been treated with a non toxic mildicide and they say that if I find mold in any other area, all I need to do is call and they will take care of it. I may have the mattress cover and the rest of the padding tested although I am sure a good HEPA vacuuming would take care of any spores which may linger there. Good thing I know people in the mold business. I am not ready to give up on my Sleep Number bed but if the illnesses continue, you can bet I may seek legal advice and proceed with a bodily injury suit if my doctor and I connect the dots to the bed. And yes I am taking a tape sample and photos of the mold and affected areas before I send them back!

Purchased the Select Comfort model 5000 in April 2005. Everything seemed fine for about 9 months, then we noticed the bed started to sag in the middle. Didn't think much of it, but it started to get worse. Contacted the company, they said no problem, they would send us the foam inserts. Installed them per the instructions, and it worked for about a month. Started to sag again, called the company again, they said they would send us some more foam to put on top of the air chambers. Put that in per the instructions, then it felt like we had a hill in the middle of the bed. So we had to take the foam out, and back to the sagging middle. Tried pumping up the chambers, that just made it more uncomfortable. Called the company again, they told me to fluff the top, as it was settling. Vacuum the pillow top, all kinds of crazy ideas.
Got deployed to Iraq, so had to leave it in limbo until I returned. I emailed them when I got back, now the rep tells me the pillow top is compressed, which is normal wear and tear and not covered under warranty. He also said that I had mentioned this to them, which I never did, as I said, I was deployed to Iraq in the middle of the negotiations. I am now in contact with the BBB of Minnesota, and will also be writing the Minnesota Attorney General to see if they can help. I chose this pile of crap over a Tempur-pedic, looks like I made the wrong choice.

I purchased a Select Comfort Sleep Number bed back in 2000. We purchased the 5000 model. At first, I had trouble finding the correct Sleep Number setting and had trouble with the hole between chambers. I found that if you use the foam they give you on the outside, then it pushes the chambers together and you do not experience that hole as many describe. Also if your chambers are closer in number then there is no real change as you move closer together at night... After owning the bed for almost 9 years, I read a review about the mold that occurs on the older chambers. I called Select Comfort and they quickly sent me 2 new chambers, new foam and return UPS freight. They also assured me that they have coated these new items with an anti-mold coating so it will not occur again. It costs me nothing. Today, I installed these with minimal effort. The pump for my bed has never had problems although I seldom use the pump. Once you find the right setting, you just leave it alone. This really is the best bed I have ever had and would easily go purchase another one. It is the only bed you can adjust as it starts to wear. Other beds you have to flip over or just go buy another one. I have never owned a bed for 9 years without thinking I need a new bed.

When I called about the zipper problem I was told that they would only pay 68% of the cost to replace the mattress. If we had been told of the way the warranty was going to work instead of being told it was 20 yrs. regardless I would never have bought the bed.
I could have gone to a conventional bed or a memory foam for the same money and gotten a better product. Their customer service sucks. When we first got the bed I would have and did recommend it. I was about to smack him through the phone when I noticed the power cord connection into pump was distorted. Evidently when bed was setup they damaged the cord and it broke. Well I'm spending the $6 + S/H ($11) and hopefully the expedited delivery will have the bed working by... Xmas? Guess what if it doesn't work right then I will have a 7000 series for sale on eBay. Though I'll probably have to pay someone to take it.

Beware of Select Comfort Service and Support. We've owned a Select Comfort Mattress for 2.5 years. We recently had a failure with the firmness controller. The controller is attached to the pump and there are no customer replaceable parts. The answer is for Select Comfort to provide a REFURBISHED pump at a cost of $154.00 (claiming 28% of the cost). We could choose to buy a new pump for $550.00. Anyone who has seen a pump would see this as customer price gouging. We also MUST pay for shipping of the pump and MUST return the old pump again at our cost to ship.
If you own a bed and have a similar failure, maybe you can get our old pump. No extension to the Warranty, no knowledge of where it's been before it lives next to your bed. Of course, it would have been repaired by the crack service team at Select Comfort.

Oh, my I bought 2 beds in 2000 or 2001 and loved them. A year or 2 later, mine started to leak. Eventually I discarded it and have missed it terribly. I didn't save the paperwork so I didn't bother calling or complaining. Today I decided to buy another sleep comfort and somehow found the complaints. Thanks to everyone so much. Now I guess I will just buy a blow up bed. I tried the memory foam and that was miserable. Air is the only thing comfortable. I am very disappointed but glad to know the score. Thanks, everyone.

I bought a Select Comfort bed, top-of-the-line 9000 series bed for $4,492.36 on Sept 6, 2008. Since day one, we have had a series of problems, products that did not work properly. Air mattress chambers leaked, pump did not work. Bed did not come with correct foam as promised. Remotes did not work (twice). The connections did not work from hose to pump. We tried to send the bed back and Select Comfort kept saying we had to keep replacing the above items. After all of this, our 30-day trial period was up. I believe this is Select Comfort's goal, so you cannot return the bed. They also told us there was a 20-year warranty.
What they did not tell us that that is only for 2 years. Then you can end up paying 68% or higher for replacements. Please note: Select Comfort just recently added the information about the only 2 year coverage. They did not explain this before. They are very deceitful. Bottom line: Our bed still leaks air (which Select Comfort says is normal but forgot to tell you this when you purchased it, again deceitful). The pillow top is shifting. My Husband has his side set on level 50 and wakes up on a setting of 15.
I had cervical and lumbar surgery and thought this would help my back but have more problems than before, especially when the air will not stay in it! We have complied to everything that Select Comfort has asked us to do over the year and the bed still does not hold air. It is their fault that they kept us on the line/hook for all these months to keep testing components/parts at their request. Now they say we had the bed too long and we knew the contract was a 30-day only return policy. I think this is unfair when we have been calling them to let them know the bed was not up to standard quality or even the quality that they advertised it should be.
When we started all of this replacing of parts, we asked what if none of this works and our 30 days is up. They told us not to worry, that they have a record of all the complaints and would honor it. Well, I have called and told them that we are done trying and are sleeping on our guest bed because our backs hurt so bad and to come get the bed. Now, they seem to forgot about honoring the track record of problems and tell me I am stuck with it and the $4,492.26 price. I put this on their credit card GE Money Bank for Select Comfort and have not paid a penny on it. I went thru one year of recovery for back surgery back in 2005 and now I am supposed to keep a bed that cannot even hold air. Please help me in returning this bed and a full refund. Even cars have a lemon law. If this is bed is not a lemon, then what is it?

First problem, we were told delivery in the most two weeks, we received delivery in almost three weeks. Second problem, rushed home from Thanksgiving out of town for delivery on a Saturday to find out they did not bring all the parts to set up our bed. Third problem, the manager at the Select Comfort store who we placed the order with did not order our bed correctly so when we called him about our delivery gone bad, he said I'm sorry I messed up, you need to pay me another $1,500.00 on top of the $6,600.00 you have already paid and wait for another delivery date.
The issues just kept on going from there, so we canceled our order. In the process of cancelling our order, we got charged $199.99 for them to come pick up our bed that got delivered incomplete (by the way still has not been picked up), lost our Chatum and Wells bed they picked up, and have completely wasted my Family and my time. I'm so disgusted in my experience with Select Comfort in the same breath I'm so glad we returned this bed, I feel sorry for people who are going to have any warranty issues if this is any reflection on how they run that company.

I bought my first Select Comfort in 1997, it is still fine with absolutely no problems. I bought my second bed in Jan. 2008, it arrived with one air mattress leaking. So I called and complained. They swiftly sent a replacement. They paid for return shipping on the old mattress but only if I brought to UPS. They wouldn't pick it up at the house unless I paid $10.00. I told them the only way they are getting it back is if they picked it up for no charge otherwise I am not sending it back. They picked it up. Overall I have been very happy with my Select Comforts. I hope I don't have some of the problems these people are having. People should remember that this forum is for complaints. I'm sure there are many satisfied customers.

I had read the complaints against Select Comfort and was initially very surprised. My husband and I bought one of their beds over 10yrs. ago and were very happy with it. We had moved twice and set it back up without problems. However, our puppy chewed a hole in one of the tubes and my side of the bed lost air. We repaired the tube but then shortly afterwards the pump started playing up, with loss of air in my air chamber nightly. Then the remote began to fail. We contacted the company. They gave us instructions to reset it. That didn't work so then they gave us new seals. They didn't work. Then we were given caps to see if the air chamber leaked. It doesn't. We kept telling them the pump would switch on and off without pumping air and the remote wouldn't reflect accurately the amount of air in the chamber.
We loved the product and never had any of the problems described by others until the last few months. However, although we did not have any problems with their technicians, it was clear that they have a set script they go by, irrespective of the problem you describe. Getting a new pump is almost an impossibility and only after you have gone through weeks of sleeping on a substandard bed. I also understand that when pumps have been replaced, it is with reconditioned pumps and we would not be prepared to pay the pro rata charge for a reconditioned pump.
My husband and I both have back problems. I have recently had to have back surgery. Select Comfort are now wanting us to replace the hoses and are still not willing to consider replacing the pump or remote. As we have no way of refilling the air chambers once we uncap them, we have given up and bought a new bed. We are still going with an adjustable air mattress, but by a different company - one which has guaranteed the product for life and will provide service engineers should anything go wrong. I am very saddened by the way the company has deteriorated. It appears from everything I have read that neither their product, nor their service, is as good as it was 10-15 yrs ago.

We have owned this bed for approx. 2 years (20 yr. Warranty) with minimal problems. During this time my wife's side seemed to lose small amounts of pressure. We were told by local dealer that this was caused by room temperature change or that she has a window (sun) side. My side maintained good pressure. This problem (in last month or so) rapidly became so bad that we were re-inflating her chamber several times a night. We called their Customer Service and were told they would send caps to seal off lines, to see if chamber was leaking or if pump was defective. Either way we would be responsible for shipping costs and IF they deemed it defective, since we owned for 2yrs., we would be responsible for large amount of bill. This process could amount to weeks without a chamber.
Well 3 weeks later caps arrived for us to diagnose problem. On 11/18 I opened bed up (Thank Goodness I Didn't have Mold like others had) and prepared to cap lines. After inflating as was told, first line was capped no problem. As I took hold of second line, I heard a buzz of air and found that the connector fell apart into two pieces. On 11/19 my 24-yr-old daughter called and was assured that we would receive a new connector Priority Mail in 3 business days. I called today 11/26 and was told, "We sent it out 11/20, You should have it by Friday." Right. This causes a grave inconvenience as my wife suffers from severe back problems and has been sleeping on an improperly inflated chamber for all this time (We were told chambers were not interchangeable - so I wasn't able to give her mine). I guess we were sold a bill of goods (approx. $3,000) and their sales people were good at lying about their Support.

For quite some time now, I have been debating whether to purchase a Sleep Comfort bed in the attempt to alleviate terrible pain symptoms in my back when sleeping (I have had multiple spine surgeries). After reading all the testimonies however, I have decided not to purchase from the Sleep Comfort company. To knowingly sell merchandise that produces mold spores? OMG! While I look for a decent mattress, I am using a blow up mattress. I put it right on top of my old box spring and voila! It actually is comfortable, and I can adjust the air pressure in the mattress! The only reason I can't use it as a permanent bed is that we have kitty cats that like to climb the mattress and put mini claw holes in it! Thank you again everyone for all your advice!

We have five of these beds in our family - 4 Cal Kings and our newest a twin, bought in '04. Previously when we have had a problem, Select Comfort has been accommodating (leaking inner tube, non-working remotes). But that was the old Select Comfort policy, I guess. Now, the bed bought four years ago, has a remote which does not work. Customer Service told me they knew there was a problem with those remotes and would send us a new one. Fine, but there is a cost as the warranty is pro-rated according to how long you have had the bed. We also have to pay for shipping back the old one. Incredible that they know of a flaw in the remote and do not replace it without cost to the customer.
We have spent many thousand dollars on these beds over the years and have liked them a lot once problems were addressed, but obviously the Company's warranty policy has changed. This is not a warranty!!! It is a pro-rated discount and their 20 year warranty is totally meaningless. Read the fine print and know what you are getting. These beds have LOTS of problems and if Select Comfort today no longer honors their warranty - buy another bed!

We purchased a Queen 9000 Sleep Number bed from the local retail outlet in May 2006. There were may physical problems I encountered but did not realize until it was too late. So I was stuck with the bed.
Warranty concerns: On November 15, 2008 I called and talked to Jennifer at the main number (800-472-7185). I told her the bed started deflating a few days earlier and just yesterday it would not inflate and keep the air in on my side of the bed. There was a big depression on my side. Jennifer was nice and told me how to test where the problem might be. She walked me through the steps to plug the two valves to see if the mattress had a leak or if there might be a seal problem or pump problem. She said I should try to sleep on it for 24-48 hours and call with the results. She said if it deflated again it was a mattress problem and would cost me about $40 plus tax and shipping (this was at a 72% pro-rated discount). I was over the 2 year 100% warranty replacement period and now at 72%.
She said if it was not the mattress they would first send out a seal kit which would be free (no charge) and they do this regularly on issues like this if not the mattress. She said just to call and this would be the next step. She also said that if it was not the seals I would have to get a replacement pump and it would be $550.00 less the 72% warranty (or $154 plus shipping and tax).
The bed did not deflate noticeably over 48 hours and I called back. This time I talked to Shantrayah. She was not as nice as Jennifer and when I told her the bed stayed inflated she told me right away that I would have to pay for a new pump. I told her, "Hey wait, Jennifer said you would send me the Seal Kit for free first." Shantrayah said that Jennifer had no business telling me they would send the Seal Kit because it was NOT available for the 9000 model. She said I had no other options.
I am NOT happy with this product or how the warranty works out. It seems that many other customers of this product are unhappy for the same reason. The warranty only lasts long enough for the product to just go beyond the 100% replacement period and then you end up paying an overpriced fee for replacement parts. I also don't like the fact that one representative tells me one thing and then another tells me another. Who do you believe? I would not recommend anyone to give their business to this company.
My last point: unfortunately I did not connect the dots and realize early on that this product (a glorified air mattress bed) was causing my back, arm and shoulder problems. You can get a famous person to say anything about a product and convince you it is the best thing in the world for you and most of the time it is not. They just do a good and many times unethical sales job on you. I would love to get my money back on this one.

I bought a king refurbished mattress for only $500. I can relate to the trench effect. Customer service was always wonderful to me. They did send me out more foam and gave me ideas on moving the foam to the inside then try it on the outside.
I ended up putting a comforter down the middle between the two chambers. It does help. But I love my select comfort bed and will not give it up. I bought it because I did have terrible back pain and it has been wonderful to me. There is a difference in setting when one person is in the bed and when there is two in the bed. I need to lower it by 5 when my significant other is in bed with me.
Since a lot of these complaints are pretty recent, I wonder if they just don't make them as good a quality anymore? If so, that's too bad. Kinda like the dryer I bought not that long ago. I would give anything to buy someone's used 10-20 year old dryer. My 25-30 year old dryer died on me. They definitely don't make them like they used to!

I would never recommend this bed to another person, it is just a bunch of foam and an air mattress that they advertise as the best thing since sliced bread. Just a horrible bed. Customer service has been good I cannot complain about that, I just opened up our bed to move it and found the mold, called them up and they are sending out a new bed.
No sending back any parts no nothing just sending out a new bed. I am very disappointed with them that they knew about this problem with the mold and never bothered to tell the consumers about it, just waited for them to find it. We purchased a select comfort bed and at the time of purchase the sales rep told us that the bed had a 25 year warranty and they would replace and part free of charge up to 25 years. They were pretty good at first to replace the items. The cover on the mattress frayed underneath and the insides of the mattress was showing. When I called them, they told me it was going to cost almost $300.00 to replace the cover and I had to pay shipping to send the old one back. Then the mattress started leaking and wouldn't hold air. When we took it apart to inspect it and see why it was leaking we found mold on the sponge and the mattress itself. No wonder my allergies have been so bad and I have to take prescription medicine to control them which isn't cheap. Plus again the sponge was torn down the center. Plus my husband and I always rolled to the middle of the bed because of the way it was made. Even though there was sponge pieces in the center of the two mattresses it was hard and made you ache all over by morning. When they tell me it is going to cost almost $300.00 for just the cover, how much would it cost for the replacement of the sponge foam pad and mattress. We paid a high price for the bed. They don't stand up to the 25 year guarantee or the warranty either.

I think you might find the following a useful addition to your report on Select Comfort/Sleep Number beds. I am an attorney, so I don't need legal advice (and don't have a claim, anyway). BTW I think your site is wonderful: Despite some damning Internet feedback (including this site), I recently purchased a Sleep Number/Select Comfort bed. After using it for two weeks, I am very happy, but I now understand why many purchasers are not, and I would like to share my insights.
Simply put, the bed is simply a nicely made air mattress surrounded by foam of various densities and enclosed in a relatively typical mattress cover. I found the quality of construction to be equal to or better than my two Stearns & Foster beds that preceded the Sleep Number bed. Regardless of the quality of the bed, it has the same inherent limitations that any air mattress does: when under-inflated, the sleeper sinks down into the mattress (the hammock effect); when over inflated, the sleeper tends to slide off the crown of the convex (that is, fatter or taller at the top than at the sides) mattress. Careful inflation is thus essential.
Unfortunately, due to the fact that air expands when heated, the inflation of the bed varies with room and body temperature. While I think the pump should adjust pressures automatically, it does not, so I have had to adjust it manually during the course of a night or two. On the other hand, being able to adjust the bed to match my aches and pains is wonderful. And I do not expect the bed to wear out as rapidly as the aforementioned Stearns & Fosters (air, after all, does not wear out like inner springs do). To sum it up, I think its a pretty good bed.
So why are so many purchasers so very upset? Its simple: the bed is grossly overpriced. I received a quote of close to $3,300 for a Sleep Number 5000 bed from my local store. I simply was not going to pay that kind of money for an air mattress. So I bought one used on eBay. I paid $610 (including shipping), and have about $125 of wood and screws and a couple of hours of labor in the foundation. My bed is around 3 years old and has no evidence of mold, although I will take proactive steps to deal with that. I think I got a good deal.
But, had I paid $3,300 for the bed, I would have been absolutely livid. The prorated 20-year warranty would have added to my vexation. I believe many purchasers experience these feelings - feelings of having been cheated into paying a staggering sum of money for an air mattress, pump, a few pieces of foam, and a zippered cover. With that kind of expense, most folks would expect perfection, but the limitations air mattresses generally, a non-self adjusting pump, a crappy warranty, and allegedly shoddy customer service do not create a feeling of perfection.
So where does the money go? Advertising and marketing. Select Comfort issued a press release on October 22, 2008 setting forth its financial performance in the preceding quarter (as a company with shares traded on the stock exchange it is required to do such). That press release revealed some interesting facts:
Gross margins (or profits) were 62.2%. That means that over half of the money a customer pays for beds (and accessories) is for something other than the cost of the products themselves; sales and marketing costs were 52.2% of net sales; and general and administrative expenses (salaries, overheads, and whatnot) were 7.4% of sales. The 59.9% of sales, marketing, general, and administrative expenses ate up most of the gross profits, so the company did not make a significant net profit.
I think their sales strategy is flawed and I think the stock market agrees: $22.5 million would buy all of Select Comforts outstanding stock which is trading at $60 a share. I have read some nasty comments about its CEO, William McLaughlin, and suspect that he (a former PepsiCo Foods executive) dreamed up this marketing strategy. Based on my recollections, Select Comfort has driven up the costs of its beds over the last few years, and I suspect that's part of McLaughlin's grand scheme - and its not working (sales and stock values have been dropping for a while). So, I hope I have solved a bit of a mystery. My advice: buy it used or buy another brand (Its kind of gross to sleep on a used mattress, but you do it in hotels all the time!).

I have a bad back. When I went to the store they told me this would be the best sleep I ever had - guaranteed, so I figured I'd try it since they said full money back guarantee and the signs all over the store said the same thing, so I bought the bed. Every morning I would wake up and the number would be different. It wouldn't be within 5, it would go up 40 or down 15. My back was always in a knot. I would call customer service and all they are constantly telling me they have one, this doesn't happen to them but biometrics/heat the bed will adjust - check the connections.
I checked them. They were tight - same issue. Called again, same thing, went back to the store. They even called their own customer service people/ guy gave the same thing biometrics/ heat like he was reading a script. They gave me another pump. Had to take the entire bed apart to hook this one up then it didn't work. Brought it back to the store. I then called the number in the brochure. They sent me another pump. This one was wired (I asked for it because the third excuse was maybe something was interfering with the wireless).
The woman on the phone told me the return would be $29.99, but to try the new pump they would extend my trial period. So like an idiot I did. It worked for about three days then the same thing. I called back to return it. Of course I hear their's does not do that, how great the bed is. "Did you try a second foam free of charge?" "We'll extend the warranty again." I said, "Forget it, I just want my money back." Now they are telling me it will be $29.99 per box and cost me over $100 to ship it back. I said I wanted them to pull the recording; they pulled it, called me back and said they listened to it and so did two managers and that the woman I spoke with the first time said $29.99 per box, so I asked to hear the recording. They said there was no way they could do that and I was stuck and they'd ruin my credit rating if I didn't pay for the shipment.
I want to know if there is any type of class action lawsuit against them in Virginia or anywhere else. I should not have to pay for shipping this junk back.

The bed's air pump stopped working. I called Select Comfort to take advantage of the warranty on the 8-year-old item. I was told NO PROBLEM. There were just a few questions that needed to be answered and a new replacement pump should soon be on its way to me. I was asked if I had the pump plugged into a surge suppressor? No, I had it plugged into the wall. Is the wall outlet working or is it possible that a circuit breaker had been tripped? I told him I had a lamp plugged into the same outlet and it was on. I was asked if the power cord was securely plugged into the unit itself? Yes, this model did not have a power cord that detaches from the pump. I was asked if we had had a recent power outage? Yes, we had an outage about a week ago that lasted about an hour. I was asked if any household items were damaged as a result of that power outage? Yes, we had a TV that worked before the outage but not after the outage. I stated that we didn't have the TV checked out because it was a pretty old set and we simply replaced it.
Right then the conversation took a turn. I was told that the power outage voided any warranty that I had and there was nothing that they could do for me now. I told him that there was no proof that the outage was responsible for either my TV OR my Select Comfort air pump. He told me that my unit would have been replaced until I told him of the power outage but that changed everything. I asked him just how much would a replacement pump cost me? I was told it would cost $450.00. I asked if I could just buy the parts I needed to make the repair myself? He told me that they don't sell parts. He wouldn't listen to anything else I had to say either. That was the end of the conversation.
I DID call back however, and talked to a different Customer Service person. I asked if this call was being recorded and she told me YES it was. I told her I wanted to get a message to her bosses. I then said that I was responsible for 10 to 20 of their sales by sending people to Select Comfort to buy their beds. I then told her that was now going to expose their racket and do whatever it took to take back 20 sales that I had sent to them. I want to get the message out to anyone who owns a Select Comfort bed. If you are going to call Select Comfort about a problem with the air pump... DO NOT ADMIT TO A POWER OUTAGE OR A POWER SURGE OF ANY KIND! You would also benefit from telling them that you DO have your pump plugged into a power surge suppressor power strip. DO NOT THINK THAT YOU WILL COME OUT AHEAD BY BEING HONEST AND UPFRONT WITH THESE PEOPLE. They will not be understanding, they will cut your throat!

We bought the SC 9000 model in Oct of 2005, with the foundation for sitting up and elevating the legs. Yep - we dropped $6000 for this brick. I am so miserable, I wake up in so much pain. After a night in this bed I feel like I've aged 40 years since buying it. My best bet is to keep the time spent in it to a minimum, or sleep on the couch. It doesn't, I repeat does not, conform to my contours. I sleep on my side (when I sleep) and am in pain within 10-15 minutes every night. A video of me through the night would no doubt show me constantly shifting, tossing and turning. My husband is okay with it, but he can sleep on the floor with no problem.
I tried at first all the tricks mentioned here, adjusting the sleep #, giving it some time, then a different #, etc. I've given up on that though, and am resigned to misery until I can afford a new bed. My husband hates me to sleep on the couch, I hate sleeping in that bed....not good for a marriage either. I discovered that a co-worker's husband sells SC beds, and told her my story. She told me that the consensus where he works is the 9000 beds are junk. I wish so much I'd returned it within the 30 days, but I, like a sheep, kept on trying to find my number, that by the time I called the company to request a refund it was too late. Message: Friends don't let friends get a Select 'dis'Comfort bed.

I bought the Sleep Comfort 5000 8/30/08, I was so excited about getting a bed that would make my side stop hurting, on 9/16 they came and put the bed up (which I paid $160.00) but within a week I could tell this wasn't working but I kept trying different settings and even called and ask what I could do, which I tried again but my side kept hurting more and more, after 3 weeks I called and told them I wanted a refund. I couldn't believe I had to pay $200.00 more for them to come and get it. To pay $350.00 for delivery and pick up I guess that's how they make their money.

I bought a Sleep Number bed for thousands of dollars and in less than 1 year the pump died. I called to have it replaced and just like another person complained the return label reached long before I received the refurbished, replacement pump. Well guess what, the replacement pump died in less than 3 months. I had the pump plugged into a surge protector and all. The funny thing is that the pump they sent me to replace my original one was manufactured after the original one but was already refurbished. Think about that. I slept better and more comfortable on a AeroBed and that only cost 100 bucks. What a total waste of money.

I spent a lot of time investigating this product. Granted, you can’t please 100 percent of the people all the time as I work in a customer service field. First off, Don't buy their box spring. Go get a good one at the local bed shop. This will stop most of the hammock problems. The pump is electronic. They will go out now and then. I love my bed. I have multiple back problems and this is the first time that I can say that I sleep like a baby. Also, don't pay full price. Get a refurbished store model. I paid about half price on my king 5000 bed.

Oh had I only looked this company up via Consumer Affairs prior to purchase!!! On 14 August, my wife and I purchased a king 5000 with numerous deluxe covers from a Select Comfort store in Sand Hills Mall, Columbia, SC. We were satisfied with the sales staff and paid in full with a personal check - what the heck they advertise on RUSH. We were told we would be contacted in 7-10 business days reference delivery and warned when delivery was set up we would be called the day prior to confirm delivery and if we did not take that call our delivery would not be made.
17 days later, I called the store and informed them, we hadn't heard a thing and were referred to customer service. Customer service could not find the order via our phone number but did located it via the address. I was told the bed was in fact in the warehouse ready for delivery and transferred to the people responsible for delivery in our area. They stated they would have to call us back. The sale rep from the store called back and wanted to know if our check had cleared and if we had the cancelled check because they were telling him the check bounced!! Four calls later sales agent Les said it was resolved and the delivery people would be calling to arrange delivery. (I live 10 miles from one of their factories.)
On 3 or 4 Sep, delivery was set for 9 Sep. On 8 Sep, I sat at home all day awaiting their confirmation call. At 4:30, I called customer service and again they could not identify the order via phone number but rather via address. I was informed that I had cancelled the order the previous week! I had not talked to them on the date and time mentioned. I explained that the reason I was calling was to confirm delivery the next day. They explained that they had confirmed deliveries for Tuesday the 9th on the previous Friday. I requested delivery as had been arranged and was informed it would have to be rescheduled for the following week.
I called Les at the store and told home what customer service had done and said and stated if the bed was not delivered as arranged I was cancelling the order. Five phone calls later, I was told a vice president of sales or customer service would call the next morning. NO Call in the next two days.
On the 11th of Sep, I went to the store for a refund. I was informed no refunds were made from the store and to contact Customer Service. I did while standing in the store. Eli at ext ** handled the data and stated it would take 3-5 days to have the bed returned from the Local warehouse to the Main warehouse and then two weeks to process the return. I expressed my displeasure and informed Eli that I would ask for him on any subsequent phone calls.
On the afternoon of 16 SEP, up the drive way comes the Select Comfort Delivery Truck!! Senior you order de bed? Called Eli laughing. Can't understand how it happened da da da. Agreed refund would take an extra week or so.
10-10, Wife called customer service, was disconnected. Wife called customer service back, was referred to accounting. Accounting stated bed had not been returned yet and then disconnected. I called customer service. Mirtha refused to give me her extension or transfer me to Eli or a supervisor. At the end I was yelling. Redialed Jim at **, quite willingly transferred me to Eli. Eli quite willingly transferred me to supervisor ** ext **. ** put me on hold and when she came back stated she couldn't get anyone in accounting and would call me back by 5:30. I gave her my home and cell numbers. No call as of 11 Oct 4PM.
Lessons learned:
1. Check this site prior to purchase despite well known names being used in advertising campaign.2. Know the complete refund story before purchase.
3. Keep complete notes on each and every contact with the company.

Bed was delivered and set up, slept on it 2 nights, bed went flat both nights. Called customer service, determined it was a leak. They had to order parts that would take 2 to 3 days to receive then need to make an appointment day/time for them to fix bed, in the meantime we had no bed to sleep on. This was a Friday, when I stated 2 to 3 days I meant business days. So the parts would not even be in until Wed. of the following week. We also had mold on the chambers after only 2 nights. We told them we wanted our money back. They gave us the money for the bed only not the delivery fee. However they waived the return shipping fee, but it would not be until Mon. or Tues. of the following week before they could pick the bed up.
After that it would take 2 weeks to have our money returned. We paid by check, our check cleared the bank a week before we ever got the bed. So they are using our funds for a solid month before we are ever reimbursed. This very day is 10/3/08, we bought the bed on 9/20/08. So it will be most likely 10/20/08 before we ever see a dime. With state of our economy as such, how upset and fed up do you think we are for paying through the nose for an inferior product, not just bad service but no service whatsoever. I will tell everyone I know about this, and anyone I happen to come in contact with that would be in the market for a bed.

I purchased a Select Comfort bed, Model QS50BC, 3000, Queen Set Dual Plush, SN Wired. I was going to order a 4000 queen and the sales person suggested I purchase the 3000 and a mattress pad for $255.99 which would save me money and with the pad make the 3000 equivalent to a 4000. I had the 30-day trial period with a guarantee I could get my money back if I didn't like the mattress. As it turned out, the actual mattress was only about 20 wide on each side with a one inch foam divider pad and 5 inch foam pad around the mattress. The bed was not comfortable and too small. Upon my request for refund I was charged $89.97 for return shipping and was told I couldn't return the $255.99 mattress pad. My complaint, the free trial cost my $415.79 for the pad, tax, $49.99 original shipping cost and $89.97 return shipping. So, for $419.79 I got to experience over a month of uncomfortable sleep. Also, the bed was received back on 5 Sept 2008. It is now 1 October and after two phone calls I am still waiting for my refund.

I purchased a Select Comfort mattress set in July 2007. I'm not a person that complains much at all about products I purchase, but I simply can't help it this time. I went back to the retail store to complain that the mattress was sagging, edge was breaking down, and airbags were not staying firm. They told me that I have to call customer service. Why is it that they can't perform customer service in their stores? It's as if the stores only are there to sell these horrible beds, not to take care of customers who purchase them. They brushed me off and told me to call some 800 number, which I did.
The company sent a new pump, new edge foams (which are incredibly cheap!!!!!!!!). As I was putting in these new edge pieces, I noticed lots of mold on top of the airbags, black spots. I immediately took the entire mattress and threw it in my garage. I was horrified at the presence of mold, and refuse to sleep on such a poorly engineered, cheap piece of garbage. I have sent numerous requests, in writing, for a refund, even a partial refund, of this product and have received absolutely no response.
I feel that this Select Comfort company is run by some of the most unethical people on earth. They could care less that their products are prone to mold issues, premature breakdown, etc. I didn't pay as much as some of you have, so I've decided to throw out this junk bed, and tell anyone who asks about my horrible experience with this company. I recently went shopping for mattresses at retail stores near my home, and spoke with some knowledgeable mattress salesman regarding these beds. The majority of them have heard similar complaints, and one of them went into detail regarding the cheap nature of these products.
About 2 weeks ago, I ended up falling in love with a Tempurpedic mattress, and had it delivered last week. Believe me everyone, this is such a better product, no sickening motors, no cords, pumps, airbags, nothing. Just a regular mattress. And, even though my wife and I like different firmness beds, we are both sleeping better now. I feel horrible for anyone who buys a Select Comfort bed!!

After reading all the raving reviews on the Select Comfort website, my wife and I decided to purchase a 5000 series bed. We immediately didn't like it and wanted to return it. Little did I know from their vague return policies that the bed had to be shipped back to Minnesota despite buying it locally. Based on ease, I decided to spend the money to have them come pick it up and ship it for me which cost an additional $80 ($200 pick up vs. $120 shipping myself)...mainly because they had taken all the boxes.
All in all, I was out about $350 to try the bed. The kicker was I decided to write a bad review on their website. I wrote it to meet all their requirements to ensure posting and gave them a one star review (out of 5). Come to find out, they never posted my review. So apparently they screen their reviews to maximize sales. I called the company to ask why and they gave me the run around. When I explained that I bought the bed based on their outstanding reviews that was obviously censored, I was pretty much told too bad.

I contacted the Customer Service Department on July 25 by email message. As part of that process, I also updated my customer contact information by submitting a new address. I received acknowledgment of the new customer information in four separate emails on July 25.
I did not receive acknowledgment of my problem by email until July 28, and was told, You can expect the replacement pump to arrive via UPS within 7 to 10 business days. I did not. After contacting them several times by email, I received the pre-paid mailing labels to use for mailing the malfunctioning pump back. I did not receive a new pump.
After contacting them again, I was told, September 8, 2008, Thank you for contacting Select Comfort. I do apologize that you have yet to receive the comfort control system. Whenever you bump them or if you just hit up against the side they unlock and the bed slides across the room. We have tried using caster suction cups, Rug stabilizers and even had chocks made for the bed. Nothing seems to keep the bed in one place no matter what you do. I have fallen off the bed or missed the bed completely because the wheels unlock and bed goes across the room. The locks on the wheels are flimsy and not large enough to hold the lock in place. I am told this will continue to happen as long as we have tile. UNACCEPTABLE!
I even asked if they had standard bed legs that could be inserted into the where the wheels are and they said they only had what looked like a large bolt with a flat end. (This will scratch the floor if it falls off the caster cup. Again Unacceptable. If I had known this I would never have bought a sleep number bed. I purchased the Select Comfort 5000 about 6 years ago. Some dissatisfaction with it losing air but not to the degree of other posters. I happened to run across my Owner's Manual and read the section on caring for the bed. Follow the advice and unzipped the top, rolled down the foam padding and, like so many others here, found the black mold. I called Select Comfort and they couldn't have been nicer. They pulled up my information based on telephone number and knew when I bought it and what I bought. When I said the problem, I was immediately transferred. The gentleman couldn't have been nicer and is sending all new and upgraded pieces for free.
I was a bit puzzled though that he sounded as though he was reading from a script when I stated the problem. Also surprised it was so easy. Did an online search for this after the call and found the mold is a common problem. Although Select Comfort was very helpful and friendly, I am left with a bad taste in my mouth that they didn't contact the consumers. They knew my information - including when and what I bought - and knew this was a problem ... so why not send out advisory warnings to owners to check for this? Considering the seriousness of sleeping on mold for many individuals, I struggle to find any justification - beyond Select Comfort's wallet - that they would allow a serious issue as this to go on.

Hi Kari, thank you for sharing your concern with us. We think it is really important to know that while situations like this are rare, common household mold can occur in any mattress or piece of upholstered furniture under certain conditions. Mold spores are present in ALL outdoor and indoor environments. Our testing revealed common household mold levels were in each case lower than mold levels typically found in normal outdoor air and were generally lower than or comparable to mold levels found within buildings with good air filtration systems. We have been advised by independent experts that for consumers with mold allergies to be affected, the mold spores must be airborne or otherwise come in direct contact with the consumer, and this does not appear to be caused by our product. For further information related to mold, we invite you to visit www.sleepnumberfacts.com where you will find the latest information concerning steps Select Comfort has taken to ensure its products remain mold-free. You will also find general information concerning the health impacts of household mold. Your 20-Year Limited Warranty is not affected by the replacement of your air chambers and foam topper pad with components that are treated with the anti-microbial agent. We contacted the company and they sent out a replacement pump that was dead on arrival. Called them again was told that that was highly unusual but they would again send another pump out. Worked initially, pumped up half the bed then it stopped working. Had an electrician check to ensure it wasn't a wiring problem at the house and it came up clean.
Again called them and they wanted to send me yet another pump. I requested that they just take the pumps back credit me so I could move on to purchase a bed elsewhere. Was told All sales are final. I informed her that I did not consider the transaction complete because I have not received what I paid for. After a few moments of her going back and forth between her manager and I. I was informed that they could send me a band new unit. Found out the first two were refurbished.

I was told that I just needed to find the right sleep number. It didn't matter that I had tried them all at this point. The representatives recommended that you try a particular number for at least 5 nights in row before trying another number. Some numbers I tried for just a night but I was tried my best to give it a fair chance. The 30 day trial isn't really long enough to fine tune if you are struggling.
I asked about returning the bed but was told that my 30 days was up. What kind of customer satisfaction and service is that? Kmart has a better return policy that this company!
The following week I left for two months leaving my husband at home. The night I returned I sat in our bed and noticed that I felt like I was sinking in the middle. Upon inspection we discovered that the frame had buckled causing the bed to sink. What a piece of junk. I knew I didn't like this bed and now the frame has buckled!
I called the customer service to complain and the only response I got was Oh we're so sorry. I'll send out another frame. No, I said, I want you to take this bed back and give me my money back. Their response was I'm sorry but your 30 day trial period is up. We can send you a new frame. I spent $2000 on this new revolutionized bed and that was my customer satisfaction response. July 22, 2008-Purchase of Queen Dual Chamber w/Ajustable Foundation & Massage, July 22, called to customer service, requesting a modification of original order to a single chamber. After 3-5 days of no calls from the home delivery, I called to only find out that they were delayed by an additional week for delivery due to excessive monthly orders and would not be able to deliver until the week of August 12.
When home delivery called (Agust 8th), they offered a delivery date of August 11. I asked for an afternoon delivery knowing that I was already booked that morning (at work) from 8-12 pm in meetings. Delivery called late Saturday afternoon (August 9) to state that my delivery would occur during the morning hours, so I had to cancel and reset another delivery date. (Note their inability to be flexible with the customer for delivery, it's on their time or no delivery). The next scheduled date for delivery was then set for August 14. At 12:00 pm on the 13th I had received no call from delivery. I called the store to inquire. By 4:30 p.m. I still had no confirmation and called back to the store again.
Home delivery claimed to have called me at 5:30 pm but I have no record of call, but given it was so late in the day, I had already contracted engineers to come in an perform maintenance on equipment and I oversee operations at the office. This time, I was so furious with their lack of customer service, I made arrangements to cancel the order. After consideration (I was severely injured in an automobile accident that has left me with 6-7 herniated discs and have been in extreme discomfort) I felt like I need to suck up.
I called back to the store in which I purchased the merchandise from and spoke with the sales woman (Sharleta at Store 443) at Montgomery Mall in Bethesda, Maryland. I felt sorry for her losing this sale due to the incompetent and rude delivery department that I tried to work out a win-win situation for she and I. I told her that I would be willing to wait an additional week or more to receive my bed. She called back to customer service to reverse the cancellation and requested I called immediately after her to ensure the customer service department that I gave her permission to reinstate the order. It was confirmed that all parts have been reissued to me at that time.
The next scheduled date for a Saturday delivery was August 23, 2008. I told them anytime and I would be there for delivery. It was a morning delivery and they arrived about 11:00 am. The delivery department did not have my adjustable foundation on the truck. One of the delivery staff members was truly shocked and embarrassed when one of his staff members yelled at him and told him to set me up on the floor and leave. He refused. I thanked him for standing up for me.
He called customer service, I called customer service. We had two agents on the line (one on his cell phone and one on mine). We set the phones next to one another on speakerphone so we all could engage with each other only to have one of the agents became so beligerant she hung up the phone and refused to assist. I also overhead a conversation on the delivery persons cell phone (speaker phone) that his boss thought he stocked the delivery truck with both a king and queen adjustable foundation (oh..oh..oh, I thought I packed the truck)... I called back after to customer service collecting my thoughts (and the delivery staff left to their next stop), I spoke with Tiffany (returns department)for the next 3 hours that afternoon trying to figure out what went wrong. She stated that the adjustable foundation was cancelled in my order on July 23, 2008. I insisted that there must be a misunderstanding. She insisted that I was incorrect and that there had been a check issued on August 19 in the amount of $1880.44. She claimed that I should receive it the following week (I have yet to receive it).
I questioned as to why if the order was cancelled on the 23 of July it had taken so long to refund my money, she said that was a good question and would check into it. Ive never heard back. Again, both my the store sales person and I were reassured that all components were at the loading dock awaiting delivery (August 29)and again the delivery staff showed to my home without the foundation. I was very polite and refused the partial order and sent them on their way.
I called to customer service and spoke with a manager AJ regarding this time (the last time) a refund for my purchase of goods I have never received. I was told that it would take up to 4-6 weeks for my refund of $3576.43 purchase. I asked why will it take so long since I have never had the possession of the property. He stated that they had to wait to get the merchandise back (and what is the name of the delivery company anyway?)I asked how would I know when it was returned. I was told that I had to call everyday. I argued that that was not my position to call everyday and I can not held accountable for merchandise that I've never had possession of. I asked for him to forward the language to me for my review but he could not (maybe would not?). I finished my call with him disatisfied and indicated to AJ that I would go over him.
After I returned home from work I called to the corporate headquarters and asked to speak with the head of the customer service department (Ileana Ramon) but she had already left for the day. Amy indicated that although she felt bad for me and was not able to locate language relating to refunds (non possession of goods)and that they could possibly get my refund back to me in about 3-4 weeks instead. I insisted I wanted my check cut on Tuesday September 2 (as refunds are written on Tuesdays) but was told that it would not happen. She obviously filled out some sort of form and someone just called me (Reena) stating really there was nothing she can do for me that the outcome will still be the same.
I challenge Select Comfort Corp. on unethical and potential illegal business practice withholding custmers money in an excessive time frame (purchase was July 22 and return will not until September 22). They had almost 4,000 dollars of mine for two months with no receipt of goods.Currently, I am in extreme pain due to the injuries I stated above. I put up in good faith a large sum of money to hopefully avoid dangerous surgery to my cervical (C4-5-6-7) that is now severly impacting my nerve ending in my arm and into my hands as well as horrific headaches daily due to waiting for my purchase.
I had to miss time from work on August 29 (2.5 hours)waiting for delivery that did not occur again. I need this money returned to me sooner than 4-6 weeks so I may contact another vendor to procure another bed as I can not afford another purchase since my checking account is depleted and I can not afford to make another purchase until the money is returned to me.

In Aug. of 2006 we purchased a #9000 Queen Mattress, Dual, Ptop. Twice in the past 2 yrs. we have had motor problems and the bed won't raise and lower. The first time it was under warranty, it isn't now. The company replacing the motor is going to send one but at our expense we have to have a technician put it on, plus we have to have the bed out of the frame which is about impossible for my husband. Since I had a broken neck a few years ago I am not able to lift.
Are these beds not built to go more than 2 years? The remote is used very little so there shouldn't be the trouble we have had and since we have, Select Comfort should be responsible for taking care of the problem. I will tell as many as I can that spending $6000.00 is way too much for a bed that has so many problems.
We can not use the massage and when the motor gets here in a week or so, we will have to hire someone to lift the bed out of the bed frame and install the motor. This is an expense that on Social Security we shouldn't have to do.

WHAT HAPPENED I originally went to try out the mattress, Select Comfort 5000 King, at the Palisades Mall store in New York although I would be moving to Maryland where the bed would be delivered. I wanted a King size mattress, the Palisades Mall Representative Phaedra explained to me that this particular model only comes in a dual chamber split mattress. It was explained that the bed was too big to only have a single chamber because one chamber could not function on a mattress that big. So I went through the entire demonstration for almost 2 hours. Needless to say, I purchased the mattress...
I could not get comfortable on this mattress, I actually woke up with a lower back ache for days. I tried to reduce the number, I tried to increase the number. I am now sleeping on 75. The bed feels so hard and the "pillowtop" is not effective. Then I also purchased 2 sets of sheets. So about 2 weeks after I first recieved the merchandise I opened the second pair of sheets to a completely stained set of sheets. I called the store that I made my purchase and the salesperson told me that I have to return it to a store. So I went to a store near my home in Columbia, Maryland. The store rep told me that the bed comes in a split and also one complete mattress without a split in the middle. The rep. also informed me that customer service could have sent me return labels to exchange the sheets without the inconvenience of having to drive to a store.
I called and spoke with a very professional young lady named Tiffany in customer service. She put the order in to exchange the mattress and sheets. And explained that a person would call me to set up a delivery date & time. I waited for 2 weeks for a rep. from the delivery company to call; he finally called and said they would deliver the mattress to my old address in NY. So I had to call again to have the customer service person adjust the delivery address and wait yet again for a rep to call to set up a delivery. I waited another week and a half, no one called.
So I called Select Comfort spoke to a rep named David who was very understanding and professional. So he checked on the delivery and said someone from the delivery company would call me in 1-2 days. I have now been waiting 4 days, no one called. So I called and actually got the same nice young man on the phone, he was very apologetic and said he would get me directly to someone who can help set-up the return. I spoke to Jenna who explained that I would be charged a $200 delivery fee.
I was never originally charged a delivery fee, nor where they going to charge me to come and exchange the mattress. So now why after all my inconvenience would I be charged a delivery fee? So I asked to speak to a manager.
Nya picks up the phone and listens to my complaints and then tells me there is no way that the $200 fee can be waived. I asked after all my frustrations how could they charge me another fee of $200. I already paid $6,000 for this purchase and I am unable to return the adjustable foundation ($3,000). I have been sleeping on a matress that has a hard hump in the middle that is extremely uncomfortable. She said, "oh well you have a mattress and it's not my fault if ou sleep in the middle. Then I asked to speak with her supervisor. "He is unavailable," was Nya's response. I asked his name and direct extension and the response from the immediate supervisor, Nya, was "I told you he is unavailable and he will contact you."
Now 10 minutes later I call back on 19 August 2008 at 12:45 in the afternoon and the phone message says the office is presently closed and then states the business hours. The mattress is extremely hard in the middle because it is split, which I was told I had to get. The physical split in the mattress was exacerbating my back pain and preventing me from manuevering about the bed. The brand new sheets were stained upon opening the package.
I have been waiting for 4 weeks for someone to set up an exchange. Then when I call back I am now charged another $200 on top of the $6,000 I already spent on the entire purchase. The adjustable frame is non-refundable... that costs $3,000. I have been inconvenienced for almost two months now. And then to top it off, the customer service representatives were extremely rude and unprofessional.

My wife and I attempted to purchase a Sleep Number 3000 bed within the past year. We opted to make payments until the bed was paid for before taking delivery. After making the final payment (we thought) on 7/6/08, we were told to contact Cust. Svc. in a couple of days to arrange shipment & delivery. After numerous calls to customer service and the store, we were told that the full amount was not paid. After more calls to customer service, supplying them with check numbers, dates, and amounts; they still insisted that the account was not paid.
After further searching on their part, they discovered that one of the payments had not been received. Upon learning this, we found the image of the check in question in our banking statements. I faxed the page the check appeared on to a gentleman in customer service, who turned it over to accounting. The accounting rep. claimed that the image was unreadable, and that they needed a copy of the actual check from my bank. I refused to do any more footwork for them and cancelled my order. I also was informed that the check in question would not be refunded back to me. This lack of attentiveness toward customers is inexcusable.
I had lower back surgery in Nov. 2003 and had been looking for a bed to ease the pressure on my back. We finally was able to purchase one of these beds, but, with all of the hassle and lack of concern shown by the people we've spoken with, good riddance. I refuse to accept the forfeiture of our payment. The check was cashed and the image on the banking statment confirmed that.

I just want to let people know that I have nothing but good things to say about Select Comfort beds. I have been sleeping in my select comfort bed for 12 years. I have not had a single problem. I had bought 4 different beds from 1993-1996, and my back hurt on every one I bought.
After 3 years of sleeping on couches, I bought the select comfort, and have not had a backache since. AND I was 34 years old at the time, very healthy and a tri athlete who weighs 115 pounds so there were no other reasons why I had backaches, except that I could not find the right mattress.

At this time in our economy any extra monies going out of pocket for an issue such as this does present a hardship. WHAT HAPPEN TO CUSTOMER SATISFACTION?

I purchased this bed because it promised a more restful and recooperative sleep. What I've actually experienced is waking up in the middle of the night with back pain and a deflated mattress. I have asked Select Comfort help with the problem of the air chambers losing air. They simply send new attachments that I have to assemble to correct the problem but it does only temporarily.
As a result of purchasing and trying to sleep in this bed, I have excruciating back pain. Motrin is now a part of my daily diet. I am tired all day because I am up and down all night trying to get comfortable. I wasted about $1,500 on this glorified air mattress that I had to assemble myself. Because the air chambers keep losing air, I only have the use of one chamber at a time. So I paid for a queen sized bed, but I'm sleeping on a twin sized mattress. I want my money back for this lousy bed and I want to be compensated for my constant lower back pain and suffering.

We purchased a Sleep Number bed in February 2008 for $1,138 for use in our recreational vehicle. We slept on the bed for a total of 3 RV trips until we decided that we cannot sleep on the bed anymore. After the second trip, we contacted Select Comfort about the problem and asked for their recommendation as to what to do to fix the problem: the left side of the bed loses air during the night and the sleeper awakes lying on the hard platform, causing poor sleep and backaches the following day. The company told us to send for some little white caps and then go on a hunting expedition to find the air chamber within the mattress. Then we could install the white caps and tell them what happens next. We searched and searched but could not find the chamber.
In the meantime, we took another RV trip, this time for 10 days (the other trips had been only for the weekend). By the fourth day, my back was in such pain that I could no longer sleep on the bed at all. At that point, we asked Select Comfort for a refund of the purchase price as we could not use the mattress. They responded that since we did not buy the product directly from them but from their "retail partner" they would not be able to help us.
We also contacted Camping World, the store that sold us the product and installed it in the RV for an additional installation fee. They were of even less help than Select Comfort. We asked them to please check the installation of the product (the lines that regulate the airflow to the bed chamber are backwards; that is, the control switch on the right side of the bed actually controls the left side of the mattress). They refused to do anything about it unless we were willing to reimburse them for the labor to troubleshoot the problem or to seek assistance from the manufacturer under the terms of the warranty.
After spending this past weekend on an RV trip with yet another disappointing experience with the bed, we have decided to "junk" the bed and purchase another product to replace it. We are very unhappy that we spent nearly $1200 for a bed that promises a 20 year warranty and must now replace it after only 6 months--of a total of 15 nights total in actual use! We must now replace a $1200 bed that promises customer satisfaction or your money back and we are unable to recoup our loss due to their lack of response.

We spoke to Meagan at the Short Hills NJ store, and she stated the 20 year warranty covers everything - the entire bed - just call customer service. We did just that, spoke to Anthony in customer circus and he told us, they'd be more than happy to fix our problem, for $715.00 (starting). And then of course, the number kept climbing.
I called back the store and spoke to Meagan about the warranty - she stated Well, the warrantyis just ONE OF THOSE THINGS WE USE AS A SALESPERSON PROFESSIONAL. End result - They don't want to do a thing for you. Don't buy one of these. Buy a regular mattress and box spring, and if you do buy Select Comfort It's at your own risk.

My husband had lower back pain that he attributed to the bed we were sleeping in: a top of the line Serta that was about 2 or 3 years old - he said he'd never had a great night's sleep on it. As a result, we purchased a sleep number bed about a year and a half ago. We had problems right off the bat with the mattresses being punctured and would not hold air. The store we bought it from replaced the air mattresses immediately. My husband has complained ever since that his back hurts so much more after sleeping in the sleep number bed.
We usually keep it at 100 now, on both sides, and it still has a ridge in the center that's higher than the mattresses on either side. When he goes off-shore fishing and sleeps on a thin piece of foam covering a piece of wood they call the bunk bed, he says he sleeps better and wakes with no pain. When we go to our friend's house in the mountain and sleep on their very old worn out bed, he says he sleeps better and wakes with dramatically less pain.
Wherever we might go and sleep in another bed, the day after we get home and he sleeps in the sleep number, he's walking around like a cripple, clutching his lower back. The difference is dramatic. The sleep number has caused him severe and ongoing lower back pain. At around $3,000 for the split mattress high-end king size and everything that went with it, we are really upset and he is in pain constantly.

The sleep number mattress does not deliver on their promise of a better night's sleep. I actually get worse sleep with this bed. If my husband has a lower number on his side and gets up in the morning, I will roll over to his side. You have to have both people in the bed at the same time to pump it up or take the air out because as soon as one gets in, it ruins the other person's side. It looks lumpy when the bed is made,. When you want it softer, you will be laying on the base of the bed. You cannot sleep in different positions (ie stomach, it will fold you in half). I absolutely ache after sleeping on this bed. Customer Service keeps sending foam parts out... nothing helps. It is just an awful bed.
I lost out on $900, and cannot buy another mattress now. My bones ache. My back aches and my legs ache. I think I might need to go to a chiropractor now, which is a waste of my money.

It was clear from the start that I did not like the product, there have been 6 phone conversations with various departments and the bed is still not picked up after 30 days. Approximately 2 years ago I purchased a Select Comfort 7000. At the time I was researching a bed that would help with both my Multiple Sclerosis and trouble sleeping at night. The sales person promised me that I would not get a better night sleep than on this bed. He also told me that more people with Multiple Sclerosis purchase this bed than any other brand.
In the 2 years that I have had the bed, none of these claims have proven to be correct. I now suffer the following I wake up in pain each day, which has caused me to start taking a medication called Lyrica. My ability to fall asleep and stay asleep has decreased since the use of the bed which has caused me to take a sleep medication. I have developed allergies since the use of the bed, which has caused me to take one allergy pill and two nasal sprays. I sleep on my stomach, so I now experience numbness in my hands and arm, which wakes me up several times during the night.
Each of the medications I have had to add is now running me $120.00 additional each month. I also have a loss of productivity at work from not sleeping correctly. If that were not bad enough, the sides of the bed have bowed outward and I have been unable to fix the issue. When I speak to the store, I am told to open the mattress and adjust the foam. This does not resolve the issue at all.
I have tried each number on the select comfort bed and there is not one number that works or helps me sleep. There is also one thing that was not mentioned when we purchased the bed. I and my wife like to cuddle and we were never told of the hard foam that separates the middle of the bed. We have not been able to cuddle in 2 years.

I will no longer deal with this company. In September of '04 we purchased a series 9000 split king with all the bells and whistles. In February of 2006 the bottom mattress cover started ripping away at the seam, clearly a defective cover. When I called to complain I found out that customer service would have to charge me $50.00 to replace the defective part. I beleive the rep said, I was lucky that we only had the bed for a little over 2 years because it's pro-rated. So if any of you are considering buying this mattress beware this bed is going to have problems and you are going to have to pay more to fix it.
Standard Twin XL sheets from the department store do not fit properly so out of frustration I spent $80.00 a pair for sheets that fit and fit they did. However, after 3 washing the elastic started to shredd. Although it has not affected the fit it's a pain to keep trimming the fuzz everytime I wash them. Meanwhile, I'm designing my bedroom and purchased the comforter and all that goes along with a designer bedroom (that I can afford). Walls painted, hardware installed for drapes, it's time to order a new set of sheets. I went online to order Twin XL "Linen" an ecru/off white color to match. All other sizes had "Linen" but not the Twin XL. I called the order department and they confirmed, no "Linen" in my size, but to call one of the retail stores.
So I called a local store. The salesperson said he didn't have any in stock and then checked the computer for inventory. He told me the website didn't show any but that they might be at another store. I asked him to check and see what stores might have them. He said his computer doesn't give him that information. I called back the ordering department and they told me they don't have any way to track the inventory of their stores. I had to call the indivdual stores. That didn't set with me to well. So, with the knowledge that a department store wouldn't be the correct size I went back for more abuse and tried to order "Sky" (light blue). that was 2 days ago. Today when I came home there was a message on my answering machine telling me they cancelled my order because they didn't have "Sky" in that size. And according to AJ I'm [out of luck].
Again, I called to question my order and their service. I asked, "How am I suppose to be able to know what inventory they have and don't have"? Why do they have an inaccurate website? Don't they have people to update their product line? If a product is discontinued why isn't there something in it's place? AJ didn't know. He said they don't tell them. What? How does this company stay afloat? (Lot's of gullable people like me.)
I had a $50.00 coupon that was used when I placed my order for the "Sky" colored sheets and now it's invalid. They gave some poor excuse that once it's used they can't reissue it. I would have to speak to the customer service department By this time I've been passed around to every department they have. That's when I got the "supervisor/senior representative" AJ. I will say that some of the representatives Josh and Judy were extremely pleasant, sympathetic and tried very hard to be helpful. That's 2 out of approximately 6 or 7 people I spoke to. Most of them were defensive and argumentative.
Ana and AJ being the rudest and least customer oriented. I would have terminated AJ long ago if he conducted business that way in my company. I asked AJ, if he were the consumer, would you be happy with this product and the service received? He said, yes. That makes me uneasy. A lack of professional consideration for a consumer is dismissed as not the company's problem. They could have taken a simple situation and made the consumer happy.
You would not believe what happened next! My husbands side of the bed deflated completely. For 2 nights I had to sleep in what I called "the hammock" (I traded with him). My husband suffers from osteoporosis. (That's why we bought the bed in the first place.) When I called to complain about the pump I was quoted a $90.00 fee to replace it. I hung up. My husband was ready to have the bed dismantled and delivered to the store at the mall. After close inspection it turned out to be the hose that connects to the mattress. It was defective and snapped. I called again and ordered the replacement part being prepared to pay whatever so we could have some "comfort" and was surprised, I didn't have to pay for the hose.
The last conversation I had with Select Comfort I was directed to the company who make their sheets for them. It took 4 days to tell me I could call their manufacturer and see if they could help me. One set of sheets for our bed size was $199.00. The set I ordered using my coupon was $120.00. What a deal. If they are referring me to their manufacturer are they going out of business? I'm beginning to wonder. It's no wonder if they don't know anything about their inventory the stores are no doubt franchises. Therefore if they aren't able to provide the inventory to the stores we're all going to get stuck with the bill.
People have to start getting the word out that Select Comfort has a poor quality product, it is not consumer friendly, it has no interest in being customer focused and quite frankly, I have never in all my years dealt with such a disorganized, hostile, out of touch organization. Whenever I have an opportunity I share my story about Select Comfort. I warn my friends and business associates about Select Comfort, their defective products and poor customer service department. I am happy to share my horror story if it will prevent someone from making the same mistake we did. The next time I'm in the mall and I see someone going into or out of one of their stores I'll share my story.
I hope this information gets out to as many as possible. I think Select Comfort should be brought to the attention of the news media. More consumer groups need to beware. One thing I can take away from this experience is to NEVER accept the words "limited warranty" without the salesperson or manager explaining in detail exactly what it says. I'm not going to be the only one reading the warranty. I will sit there as long as it takes and have the salesperson or manager go over the entire warranty. If they get aggravated I will know they either don't know the warranty or don't care about me as a consumer.
Don't be fooled by false advertising. Investigate before investing in such a large purchase. Ask for references, read consumer reports on all large purchases and "Trust No One". I have had an attorney read the contract. He represents the defense in cases (mostly insurance) and he told me that the defective cover was 5 months after the "limited warranty". And the sheets were not under the warranty

As soon as I called and told them of the problem and asked how I could remedy the issue, they proceeded without question to send me new air chambers, center foam and even asked about the pillow top cover (which I said was fine). I have always loved the Select comfort and was very pleased with their resolving my issue. This also resolved the issue of the center that sinks in due to the wear on the center foam) which I didn't even bother explaining.
3-5 business days I will receive new parts at no charge! Great customer service!

In 2005 I decided to purchase a select comfort model 5000 bed. I had tried a different brand of bed, only to be disappointed. It was not an air bed however. Regardless, I was unsatisfied and began to look at other beds. I got a flier in the mail for select comfort model beds that were refurbished. I believe the price was around $1200 and that was with the foundation.
I purchased the bed, and found it to be very comfortable. Me and my fiance had nothing but good nights rest on it. I have now owned it for about 3 years, am on my third air pump. I got my 2nd one last year, and just received shipment of the 3rd one the other day.
My side of the bed keeps deflating and I too am experiencing the famous dip in the middle. My fiance keeps asking me why I'm always sleeping up all over here and in her face. I now know why! The dip causes me to roll over into the middle of the bed. I find myself there almost every single morning now, and have for about the past year.
Looking back at my experience with the bed, I do not think I would spend the money for another. The displays on the pumps keep going out, the bed deflates.. and it's not just losing pressure from temperature or barometric pressure. It's losing air. If temp or pressure caused it to deflate, then both sides would be affected the same way, much like balloons deflate similarly when you take them into cold weather.
Every morning I wake up sunk into my bed, and my lower back hurting. My arms tend to fall asleep a lot too while sleeping on this bed. I have not checked my bed for mold, as I just learned about this problem shortly before writing this review. I am going to go check for that. I had neck surgery shortly before purchasing this bed. I thought the onslaught of sinus problems were due to side effects from the surgery. Maybe they are coming from mold? I will not be surprised to find mold growing, having read what I've read today about these beds. If you're going to spend this much money on a bed, get something that is not at risk of losing air, or caving in!

We had purchased a queen size Select Comfort bed around 2001. The first couple of years were good. One night watching our news we saw the story about the beds having mold. We check and sure enough there was mold on the chamber and the foam. We contacted the company and they sent out "new" chambers and foam pad. We aired the mattress out according to their recommendations. Once again we experienced the mold problem. Called them again and they said we were "accidently" sent refurbished chambers, whatever that means to them. They sent out new ones again.
This happens to be the worst bed we have ever had. It slops in the middle, 2 times with they mold problem. These beds are very expensive. Stopping back into the Mankato store I asked how long these beds are suppose to last. They told me 25 years. I laughed out loud at it. This company does not seem to care about false advertising, stealing money from consumers for products that do not work or last like they claim, let alone the health risks of sleeping on mold. There should be a stop to this company until they can hold up their end of the agreement! We have to pay for something that can be a health risk to people. Even after all this they sent us a bill for not returing the molded chambers! You've got to be kidding me. The public needs to know these things before doing business with a company like this!

When the 5000 Expanded Queen Model arrived with no sheets, I didn't know what to do as I had no Expanded Queen or King sheets. I called the company and they informed me that the sheets would be arriving soon. It took another week for them to arrive. I ended up using a queen cover sheet that I had had for extra thick mattresses that I was able to just stretch over the expanded queen.
I have had lower lumbar back problems off and on for the past 5 years and as soon as I slept on my new bed, my back begin to ache. I also felt like I was sleeping on a slant and that I was leaning inward towards the center of the bed. After a few days on my new bed, I went on a weekend ski trip with my children. When I discovered that the budget motel bed was more relaxing and that I had no backache in the morning after sleeping on this old motel bed, that's when I realized that something was indeed wrong with the my Select Comfort bed.
I tried re-inflating the bed to 100 then lowering it to 0 then pumping it up to a comfortable setting, it seemed to help, but I still felt like I was sleeping on a hill. I called the company and they suggested that I didn't install the bed correctly and that I may have damaged the air chamber. I informed them that my engineer father who also has a select comfort bed installed the bed and that there were no problems on set-up. The agent suggested that I tear the bed apart and exam the base air chamber then to inflate and deflate the bed. After trying this it seemed to be level, but a few days later my back was killing me and I was now going to the Chiropractor for emergency visits with my upper back and shoulders. I was still sleeping on a slanted bed. I called Select Comfort again and they sent and they sent out another Air Chamber and I sent the supposed defective one back to the factory. The new air mattress seemed to work better, but after a week the feeling of sleeping on a slant was coming back again. By this time, my husband had returned home from deployment and I had to tell him about our bed saga.
My husband seemed to have no significant problems with the bed, but of course he had spent the last year in a wooden shack sleeping with an Army mattress on top of plywood. Eventually I had my parents ( Select Comfort owners) tryout my side of the bed and they unanimously agreed that my side of the mattress slanted.
Subsequently, I called Select Comfort and told them that my side of the bed was still leaning inward. After tearing the bed apart while on the phone with them, they told me that they would send out some extra foam to be placed underneath the bed chamber to prevent the slanting.
This past weekend, I slept in our pop-up camper on a pure foam mattress and my back felt terrific. Last night, it was back to the Select Comfort bed and I didn't sleep well at all. I am considering ordering plain foam for my side of the bed and ditching my side of the mattress if this latest fix from Select Comfort doesn't work. It's not worth it to subject my back to a continuous uneven surface every night.

I purchased a queen sized select comfort bed on 5/30/2004 and was told it was covered by a full 20 year replacement warranty. For the 1st 2 years I got considerable relief from backpain and a restful nights sleep, but shortly after that the center of the bed begin to get a noticeable depression in the center, the foam pad quickly began to wear and sink in the middle- which is not covered uner the warranty and the pillow top also did the same and is not covered under the warranty.
I went to the local retail store in Tulsa and was told that neither could be replaced, as the condition of the foam pad and the pillowtop worsened, I phoned Select Comfort's customer service center on 6/22/08. This time I was told I could purchase the foam pad for $27.00, HOWEVER,I was told the replacement pillow top would COST $600.00, they made no offer to cover part of the cost and showed no sympathy whatsoever for the quick failure and wear.
So beware, they use the BAIT AND SWITCH tactics and READ THE FINE PRINT, VERY LITTLE IS COVERED BY THE 20 YEAR WARRANTY THEY TOUT.

About a year ago we bought a Select Comfort Sleep Number bed. We were excited. The best sleep my wife felt she'd ever had was on our camp air mattress, oddly enough. Most people can't stand the things
So, when it came time to replace the bed, we tried a Select Comfort Sleep Number bed. She loved it. I was fine with it, though I wouldn't call it love. It worked fine.
That was until last night. My wife woke up at about 3:20 AM with lower back pain and feeling like she was sleeping on the floor. She checked her sleep number and it was at a 5. She put it back up to normal, a 45. It took longer than usual to pump up, but did it. 20 minutes later, it was back to a 5.
So, I was up at about 3:30 and gave her my side of the bed. I headed out to the couch and didn't end up sleeping.
Thinking of getting a glorified air mattress? Don't do it. Get a high quality standard mattress for significantly less than the Sleep Number trash.
My wife is suffering low back pain, I have sleep deprivation in the middle of a two week busy stint at work.

We both suffer from chronic lower back pain that the mattress just doesn't help with anymore and my migraines have increased, usually waking up with them....triggered by mold??? Thank you for websites like this that help alert consumers to performance and service issues. My husband bought us a select comfort bed as a wedding present, and it was fine for about three months. Then the bed started to cave towards the middle. Whenever I would cuddle up next to my new husband, I felt like I was sleeping in a ditch. It was awful. We took the bed apart (which is a pain), inspected everything, then put it back together. It did not help. We tried inflating it all the way. It still did not help. We called select comfort customer service and they sent us a new pad to put down the middle of the bed. The pad was huge. We followed the directions on the sheet that it came with and put it in the center of the bed.
Now instead of a ditch we had a hill. We took the bed apart (again), and cut the pad down to fit the height of the bed better. We put everything back together. The bed still feels like it has a hill in the middle of it. So we either have to sleep in a ditch or on a hill. My husband is able to sleep fine because he sleeps on the left side of the bed. I, however, sleep in the middle and have suffered back problems ever since we have been having problems with this bed. I have never experienced back problems before now. I am 23 years old. Buying this select comfort bed was the worst decision we ever made, and I intend to tell everyone I know not to buy this bed!

We bought a King bed dual wired controls about 4 years ao. It took awhile to decide that the bed isn't all its cracked up to be, but we've stuck with it after all that money we spent on it. After 2 years the pump died, and I contacted Customer Service. Seems we just made it under the wire as far as warranty was concerned; they sent us another pump, which wasn't new, but reconditioned. It never worked they way you would want, and when I called about it, I was talked down to, as if I didn't know how to work the bed.
Now, a year and a half later, the second pump died. But, oh, we are out of warranty, and in order to get a new reconditioned pump, we had to come up with 28% of the cost, or $149.14 (includes S&H). I told Debbie we wanted a new pump, not a reconditioned one, and I was told that they only provide reconditioned pumps, not new ones, and it would be here in 7 to 10 days. I'm not old at 60, but my bones and a rock hard bed just don't mix. If you are looking to buy one of these Select Comfort beds, my advice is to find something better that is going to last longer than a few years. The mattress doesn't provide as much comfort as you would think, and its components are of poor quality.

(we have timed it, I am being nice when I say 10 minutes). Not to mention the migraines I have had for the last 3 months, only to find mold on the air chambers and the underneath part of the pillow top.
I have been very, very nice everytime I call Select Comfort but apparently being nice get you nowhere! I am wondering if the BBB, our local new complaint center or a lawyer can help us. We spent a lot of money for this bed and for what to have headaches, backaches and sleepless nights!
We can't afford another mattress at this time, and our health is suffering. I wake up sore all over with headaches. My husband wakes up EVERY hour. First of all, the plastic base platform is a piece of junk- regular bed planks will not prevent the interlocking plastic cross bracing from pulling through the locking groove. I had to add extra wooden bed planks and a piece of plywood to keep the plastic base from falling apart. This bed was purchased on 3/17/2002- within the past few months it feels like I'm falling out of bed and the foam side is bulging. Upon examination, the bed cover is torn where the quilted material meets the thin material of the bottom piece.
After taking the bed apart, I found black mold growing on the black foam piece that goes over the air bags and some growing on the air bags. I just found these problems, and looked on line to see if anyone else has had these problems. I think this is a serious problem and could warrant a potential recall of this product with a very dangerous situation of mold growth in the foam.
I have had sinus problems, headaches, and a chronic cough that begins when I go to bed. My wife has had similar symptoms and memory problems. Select Comfort has offered to replace the entire mattress at no cost.

Bought the basic select comfort queen size bed with dual air controls 15 years ago, right after getting married. It worked very well for 10 years. Wife keeps her side soft. I keep my side as hard as a board (or as hard as the pump will let me). About 5 years ago, one air bladder started leaking. Also, the pump started to not work on one side so well. My side would not get as hard as it used to. The wife's side would not pump up past medium stiffness. I guess we got our money's worth. But, we're at the fork in the road to buy another one or try a different brand of air bed. I have never liked the fact the pump sounds like a vacuum cleaner. Another brand's pump is much quieter and works like a fish pump.
I did try to work with Select Comfort on the phone a couple of times a few years ago to see what could be done about the apparent leaks. Customer service was of little help and wanted to sell me a new pump. I told her I didn't want another pump that would start leaking after 8 or 10 years. I told the lady that if something hadn't started leaking air in the bed, then I would not have to run the pump every night. I have neck trouble and I do love the air bed concept and how it works in the real world for me. I also use a great memory foam neck pillow (those are not all created equal either). I feel I got my money's worth, but I think I might try a different brand this time.

The 7000 model mattress and support foundation that I ordered a bit over a year ago is a miserable product. Starting about 5 months after I received it I started spending many sleepless nights because the bed, which I set on 90 (fairly firm) on both sides of the dual control, has developed a trench, or deep V in the middle. This causes me to roll toward the center. (Luckily) I sleep alone and so do not roll into anyone, but I am also a side sleeper, so my hips and legs are going in one direction and my arms and head are headed downhill.
To add insult to (back) injury, one side -- the side on which I usually sleep -- of the mattress loses air every day; it goes down from 90 to 25 in the course of a day. This is the the worst $2800 investment that I've ever made! I thought I'd google the Sleep Number bed to find the contact information, and came across scores of complaints from fellow purchasers who have the same problem. Although I will still call to complain, now I am very discouraged that the company can or will fix this problem.
I am having back and knee problems that I never had before my purchase and use of the mattress. I do not sleep well because I am fighting my way out of the bed's valley all night, and am exhausted throughout the day from the lack of sleep.

In January 2006, I received a very large colorful fold out sales advertisement - promotion from Select Comfort Factory Outlet in the mail. It depicted all the usual advertised Select Comfort statements about the bed products they offer and various other reasons why one should purchase from them. Interestingly, reason #12 states Your satisfaction is important to us! along with ... you'll get top-level customer service and support as long as you own your bed.
Being mindful and not believing everything you read or hear, my husband and I visited a local Select Comfort store, lengthy inquiring about the beds. Thereafter I telephoned Select Comfort several times for further lengthy inquires. After much thought, we made the decision, based on all the information gathered, to purchase a Refurbished Sleep #5000, Queen Pillowtop with the foundation kit. It appeared a worthy major household investment based on all we learned. We relied on all representations from Select Comfort, saving about $600.00 supposedly, with all the same warranties.
The bed was ordered early February '06 and arrived after several telephone calls later. To our unknown demise! After assembling, we found the pump was DEAD. Two weeks later on an uncomfortable brutal bed couch, we try the new bed. It has been the most miserable 2 years of sleepless nights ever to this day!
Although always demanding a refund from the get go, and stating how much I hate this bed, Select Comfort reps have been nothing but uncooperative, rude and down right nasty. They informed me that they use complaints in their training sessions. It is also well worth mentioning that they record all phone calls, pull you up on their computer screens, have all the info on you at their fingertips, record their name and ID, put in their own personal notes about your emotional character as they see it, as well as a partial outline of your complaint and have a readily available handy reference lookup book of what to do when you complain.
Given all this, yesterday I had to order a 4th pump. The last one was February '08. We too experience the falling in the middle and poor foundation structure. I just learned about the possibility of mold! I'll be checking immediately! Maybe why we are always sick! Who'd thought it a reason from your own bed?
Respiratory problems, possibly associated with unknown mold contained in bedding. Problems with posture and misaligned bone structure. Undue pain and pressure point suffering. Lack of sleep!

After dealing with a horrible Stearns and Foster matress I was able to talk my husband into buying the SC 7000 Cal King. In the store it felt wonderful and supportive and I couldn't wait to get the bed of my dreams home. After the 1st night I was already dissapointed. But still I thought it's new and we just need to adjust. After the 2nd night my lower back was out and my legs were numb. Now I was upset. We spent a lot of time trying to get it adjusted and after night three I was done.
My husband feels ripped off, it does not feel like you spent $5000 for a bed its feels cheap. The hard foam edge requires you to pull yourself out and it is impossible to sleep next to someone else. The only positive is the 7000 model has a cool core in it which my husband loves (he is a hot sleeper) of course I will find a cool mattress pad at a home store and fix that. We purchased a new mattress last night and I can't wait for it to be delivered. I will be sleeping on the couch till it comes.
I called customer service 5 nights after receiving our bed and wanted to make arrangements to have it returned. She was so nasty and treated me like I was just an idiot. I calmly explained to her that I'm sure it just wasn't the bed for us and she kept saying I needed to give it time and adjust to it. I haven't had back pain in months and now I was walking like an L but I was supposed to skip work and not be able to function with my kids because I was trying to adjust to a new bed. She said someone would call me to arrange for a pickup and hung up on me. I feel the beds in the store are definetly set up different to hide the design items that most people seem to complain about.
There is a definite difference when you get your bed home and it is not worth the money you pay for this. Out money for delivery and pick up delivery but so glad it is leaving. If you are looking for one then why not buy one from an unhappy customer and save a few thousand. There are a lot of ads out there for new beds with a few nights use. I can see why.

READ THIS BEFORE YOU BUY A SLEEP NUMBER BED! My husband and I have owned one since 2004. The last few months I have become ill with constant sinus problems and severe allergy symptoms. So severe that it has affected my ability to work at times and I have had to miss work as a result. My husband was recently diagnosed with Asthma from our doctor and has been taking medicine to treat it. None of this made sense until today. I have been doing my own research into why we've had these symptoms and today I found the answer: I happened upon a website that talked about mold being a notorious problem with the Sleep Number bed. I ran upstairs and pulled back the foam mat and there it was on both sides of the bed: MOLD!
Sleep Number has known about this problem and has purposely not made consumers aware of it. They say that they have solved the problem on the beds made since 2005 by treating them with an anti-microbial agent. When I tried to get information on what chemicals are used in this treatment, I was told by a supervisor they could not disclose this information but was assured it was non-toxic. I wanted to see the documentation to support this and they said they would only provide it if I sent a request in writing, which I have.
But here's the point: Why would you buy a bed from a company that would knowingly withhold information from consumers that could potentially seriously affect their health? It's tantamount to the tobacco industry knowingly withholding the debilitating effects of smoking. And doesn't it raise the question that if they would refuse to disclose this information for the health of their consumers, what else are they withholding? What exactly is in the supposedly non-toxic anti-microbial treatment that they are now putting on their beds to prevent mold? Do you think they would tell you if it was toxic?

I have to echo the sentiments of some of the other people on this site. If you're lucky enough to have found this before you purchased, I envy you, you can save yourself a few grand. I believe I've had my bed for about a year and a half, so this isn't a first-impression type of comment. I'm a somewhat large man (6'2, 250lbs), and even when I weighed 50-70lbs less about a decade ago, I tore through mattresses like most people go through underwear. It seemed that within just a few months of buying one, there would be a sag in the middle that I would end up filling, sleeping in an awkward position that would contribute to aches, pains, and pinched nerves. I thought an adjustable air mattress would solve everything, and I still believe it's possible, just not these Select Comfort Sleep Number beds. The foam they use around the edges reduces the usable size of the mattress signficantly. But the piece in between the right and left chambers on the dual-chamber beds is the worst.
As other people have noted, it (whether your chambers are set at the same setting or not) creates a chasm that, just like on traditional mattresses, my body seems drawn towards. Even when I'm situated in the middle of my chamber, I still feel like I'm tilted at an angle, which shouldn't be possible with an air mattress and a strong, flat surface supporting it. What is going on?! I've also noticed the dampness on the air chamber when I take off the sheets. It freaked me out the first time I saw it - I thought, 'did I wet my bed?!'. I thought maybe I was having some kind of medical problem. Nice to know it's 'only' a poorly designed product that will eventually result in mold.
It also is uncomfortable at certain firmness settings without a foam topper as some people have noted. If the firmness goes down past a certain level, the bed starts to make loud crinkling noises with every move and it can easily distract a light sleeper. The feel of the bed material is also more noticeable at those settings - it feels 'heavy' and is rather uncomfortable. I think Halina of San Carlos CA nailed it when she said, The bed is nothing more that a camping type air mattress. about four inches thick, topped with egg crate foam and a padded cover.
That said you can probably build your own air mattress bed for thousands less than buying one of these Select Comforts. I really like the idea of being able to adjust the firmness, so if you get tired of the feel of the bed or think a firmer or softer feel will give you a better sleep, you can just press a button and change it without having to buy a whole new bed. But because of the way the Sleep Number is designed it just doesn't provide what I need and doesn't seem much different than a traditional mattress. So $2,200 and the same aches, pains, and pinched nerves later, I'm still looking for a good night's sleep.

We bought a king, pillow top, totally adj. bed (head, foot, massage) 4 years ago for over $4000. The first 6 months was okay. Then we noticed we both had dips on our side of the bed. The pillow top had already compressed to the degree we could visually see it and physically feel it. Contacted customer service and they sent out another pillow top. It did the same thing within 8 months. They refused to do anything more about it and accused us of wanting something for nothing. We tried shaking the pillow top, vacuming it, etc. We finally bought some foam and tried shoreing up the areas that were compressed on the pillow top. It didn't help at all. We have spent the last 2 years trying to get comfortable in this bed...to no avail.
We went out yesterday and bought a Serta. I can't wait to have a good nights rest. I would not reccommend this company or their beds to anyone. The customer service is unhelpful, rude and the company does not back up their product. In my own business, I have found that treating the customer like gold has really paid off. Apparently this company is not concerned with their bottom line, customer dissatisfaction or that fact they are apparently loosing money and laying off people. I am and will tell everyone I know to stay away from this company and their beds. Bad Bad investment.
Sleepless nights for over 2 years. My arms fall asleep every night...back pain, wake up feeling like I've been run over. Wasted $4000, had to buy another mattress. It there is ever a class action suit with disgrutled comsumers, I want to be in on it.

I was a few days away from going to a sleep clinic for my insomnia. After trying many inner spring beds with little success we tried s SC 7000 king. With in a week of owning the bed I cancelled the appointment. I started to sleep better than ever. We have since then purchased one for our guest room and cabin. Never had a single issue. Just my experience.

The product is a disgrace. You can't use about one-third of the bed because the center divided and the edges are so stiff. You end up in a pocket on your side of the bed. So there is this no man's land that is difficult to cross if I want to be closer to my wife.
The second night we had the bed I was in bed and checked the number; it was low so I started to add air. The pump quit responding and all the air went out of my side of the bed. At this point I could not get the controller to do anything for either side of the bed. I finally tried unplugging the motor from the electricity and plugging it back in. That resulted in the controller returning to operation.
My wife has noticed that she is very warm from the bed in the morning. And that there is moisture buildup on her side of the mattress pad. The mattress does not maintain its pressure setting. My back hurt this morning. According to the digital controller sometimes the pressure moves up and sometimes it moves down. I am very good with mechanical things and I can't see why this would happen.
When I called to schedule a return they almost expressed shock that I would want to send it back after only 3 nights. We can help you. You probably have never slept on an air mattress before. It can take some time to get used to. Blah blah blah. They treated me in a way that I felt was condescending and patronizing (and I thanked them for it!).
The return procedure is complicated in that they don't provide you with boxes for the return. I would guess that this dissuades some people from sending their bed back. It's a BED. I should be able to lie down on it and go to sleep. I don't want to fidget and adjust the thing. It is a good idea, but poorly executed. But at their Customer Support line they try like anything to get you to keep it and make their little tweaks and adjustments. The bed has serious inherent limitations. The nuisances of the last three nights plus all the remarks of other SC owners on this site lead me to believe that I am better off just moving on. The day after they set up the bed I stumbled on this webpage. I am so glad. I have slept on the bed for three nights and have decided to return it. Yeah, I will be out another $200 bucks for the return, but that beats the backaches and uncomfortable sleep.

I bought a SC bed almost 20 years ago before the sleep number concept was invented. It was just an adjustable air mattress with foam edging. I soon learned that it needed a foam pad on top to soften the surface so we spent $100 at a mattress store and bought a 2 dimpled foam topper. From there I learned if I inflated it too much, my shoulders and upper back would go out. If I slept on my side my lower arm and fingers would go to sleep but my lower back felt great. On the other hand if I softened it too much my shoulders, neck, arms and fingers would feel better but my lower back (No 4-5 Lumbar) would scream bloody murder requiring me to toss and turn throughout the night to relieve the pain. Even with these observations it was and is the best bed I ever bought. The worst year of my life was spent on a $1500 Waveless, heated, state of the art water bed. Having said that, I would never defend that it is perfect or that it will cure all back pain. The key was in the adjustable nature of the bed. So much so that I recently contacted Select Comfort and asked them if I could buy a 4 bladder bed. I needed independent support for my low back (firmer) and independent support for my Upper neck and shoulders for both my wife and I hence the need for two adjustable bladders on each side.
I was dissappointed by their lack of response or interest in helping me. I got the typical run around of we don't sell a bed like that and we don't make special beds. Having read the comments on this site I'm now even less inclined to invest in another SC bed even though I'd love to have the no principle, I'm not willing to spend $450 to add it to my existing bed and it sounds like it may be more trouble than it is worth. My son bought a Queen sized Model 7000 a few years ago. He recently acquired a dog which chewed through the cord of one of his sleep number controllers. He called the SC Support (is that an oxymoron) desk only to be told that the cord is not serviced separately and he would need to spend $450 for a new motor and control set. Not Cool. I'm still looking for the perfect bed. I've tried quite a few in my 60 years but as I age perfection is harder to find and even satisfactory is elusive.

For us the product did not perform the way Select Comfort indicated it would. We purchased a 7000 Queen Set Dual Ptop, Wireless (Model QS41WX) for $2,700 sales price plus a $150 delivery charge on 2/18/08 with a 30-day trial period. The product was delivered on 3/4/08. Toward the end of March, we requested a return.
When we called customer service to schedule the return, we were told it would take 3-5 days to enter the return, two weeks to pickup the product and another two weeks to credit our account. They picked up the product on 4/10/08 and we paid a $200 return fee. We were never told that it would take four weeks or more before our account would be credited.
Now, for the problems with the product: we were not told by the sales organization that the settings would fluctuate up to 15 points in either direction, depending upon atmospheric conditions, room temperature, etc. After the first or second night, neither my wife nor I was able to sleep through the night. Each side of the bed formed a well or hammock-like condition that remained, even if we brought the settings up to the maximum of 100. The outer perimeter of the bed was rough on the skin and the center of the bed had a bulge. The materials retained the body heat, making the bed very warm.
Customer Service advised us that they were aware of that problem and had taken measures to correct the situation. I received no response to my question, as to why the correction had not been applied to the mattress we had. Customer Service also advised us that the store that sold the product should have advised us of the fluctuation in the settings. Finally, we were unpleasantly amazed at the assembly process with the number of piece-meal items that were inserted into the box spring and mattress, something which you would never see from the sales display.
No damage resulted, except for the loss of delivery and return expenses.

We've had the bed for 2 and half years. The pump malfunctioned within the first year. One side would fill but not the other one. The company replaced the pump and no cost. A year and some later the pump malfunctions again, this time it doesn't work at all. They want $ 160 for a replacement. Which doesn't sound like a lot, if at least 5 years or more had past after purchase. For a $ 3000+ bed, I think the pump should be of better quality. What guarantee do we have that this pump won't break within the next 12-18 months?
So far I've had 2 bad pumps, in 2 and a half years, so it doesn't speak well for this company. I feel like I will have to replace the pump every 12-18 months for a fee. What should I do? I think I was sold a defective pump the first time, and was replaced a refurbished pump the second time, that didn't last long either.

That would make the cost of the entire pump about $450. That alone seems out of line but you need a pump. I read the warranty but did not expect that for that amount of money I would be getting a refurbished pump....not a new one. So here I am with a refurbished pump...no idea how that is warrantied if at all. Since the warranty says they can do this I have no recourse. I feel ripped off. But what are you gonna do?

We purchased our kind size select comfort bed on February 19, 2008. We still have until March 30 to decide on whether to return the bed or not. Our total purchase price was $6,220.00 which included a mattress pad and 2 sets of sheets. After reading the postings on this consumer affairs website and feeling 'damp when in our new bed, I decided to take it apart this weekend to see what was up. I took off the mattress pad and foam and saw two huge wet spots on the air mattress where our bodies had slept. I aired out the air chambers, foam and top to dry before making the bed. This of course was the weekend so I just called customer service today to ask about the problem and how to eliminate the moisture and was told that this process is called transperation and is from perspiration. I told her that I did not agree, that it appeared to me that the moisture was from condensation, from the temperature difference from the air mattress and our bodies. She also said that until 2001 there was a mold problem from the moisture but not now because the mattress is treated. I really don't like the idea of having this moisture there and feeling like I need to constantly dry the bed out. I guess I need to decide quickly whether to keep the bed or send it back. Also, for the person who reported that this only happens to those who are not clean, you are absolutely wrong. By no means are we dirty and this happended to us. I think that the company should explain this problem when they are sellling the bed. Oh, this would cause their sells to slump, wouldn't it?

My experience with the Select Comfort has been mixed. Both Great, and bad... My wife purchased our queen size select comfort while I was in Iraq in 2004/2005. Our previous Sealy top model mattress had lasted us only 6 years before it became so uncomfortable that after a few hours we had to get up due to the extreme discomfort. And the manufacturer would not cover their warranty.
So my wife decided to try the Select Comfort instead. Originally she had set it up with both the supplied plastic base and also our original box spring. She liked the bed to be higher.
In this configuration, the bed was extremely comfortable. Once I returned from Iraq though I decided to remove the box spring and just raise the frame of the bed. After about 2-3 months we too noticed that we started to fall towards the middle of the bed. I tried different foams in the center, different settings, etc... with no success.
It wasn't until I looked under the bed one day that I noticed that all the plastic crossmember supports had bowed at the center of the bed.
I decided to re-engineer the frame so that it had both head to foot and side to side support bars made of heavy bed frame angle steel bars.
It took about a week before the bed would set evenly on this frame without rocking side-to-side.
After that, we've had NO issues with the falling to the center problems.
I would suggest that if anyone doesn't want to go the route I did with their bed frames, that they consider a simple GOOD box spring support instead of the cheap plastic one that is supplied.
Or, if you still want to purchase this type of bed, my recommendation would be to use your original box spring if it's in good shape.
As I said, I love our select comfort bed, but only after I fixed the center sag problems... best of luck with your next purchase...

Every morning we wake up soaking wet in our $2000 bed. We have been told It is normal for the mattress to be moist inside because of the temperature difference between the air in the mattress and your body by the customer service department. Every week we have to take the bed completely apart, scrub the stains off the air chamber, and let the foam and padding dry, which takes about six hours.
We were given a replacement mattress with a different kind of zipper, and after two months the zipper has broken. We still have all of the same problems with the replacement. The bed adjusts itself- the sleep number does not remain at what we set it at. I was told by customer service that bed has sensors inside that adjust to your body's pressure. This is not true. The bed is also extremely uncomfortable due to the two inch foam strip that separates the two chambers. It has a hammock effect that causes us constant back pain and horrible sleep. The bed is nothing more that a camping type air mattress. about four inches thick, topped with egg crate foam and a padded cover. We purchased a model 5000 bed about 5 years ago and paid about $2000 for it. This was our first new bed purchase and we spent over two hours at the store asking questions and listening to the sales agent. During this we asked how the foam would hold up considering we are larger people and we were assured it was very durable and could stand up for years, no problem.
We loved the bed for the first few weeks but then the mattress started to creep down off the frame every night and we would have to slide it back up. Minor issue for a comfortable sleep so we just got used to it. Then after about 2 years we noticed the sides starting to mushroom out and the pillowtop all but collapsed. Now after 5 years the one side air chamber will not stay up and this is the final straw.
We had contacted the store about the sliding and they said to put drawer liners underneath the mattress, we did this and ended up with them rolled up and useless. We contacted the store about the mushroomed sides and they told us to put better fitting sheets like the ones they sell. Well this final time I called the customer service line cause it is more than a visual or minor inconvenience. This was a total failure of the product and has rendered it useless. My wife made the initial call and was informed that we are out of our two year 100 percent warranty and in our pro rated period and that the part needed will cost $60.00 plus freight.
During the sales pitch we were told items such as the pillowtop and mattress cover were only covered for 2 years but the structural foam and air chambers were covered for the full period and if they ever failed they were covered. That is what eased our minds in the purchase was the fact that at least if the foam fell apart or the air chamber leaked it was covered. Now I feel like I fell for a Nigerian check scam cause I paid $2000 for an air mattress I could have bought at walmart for $20. Now, after the whole process, I have to give the company more money to make their inferior product useful again or go back into debt and buy a real mattress from a company that uses big boy materials instead of children's toy materials that can't even hold up for half of the claimed lifespan of the product. I have bought used matresses from hotel supply companies and gotten more use out of them than this. I am very dissapointed because I could have bought a new cheap matress from a store every year and it still would have been cheaper than this gimmick of a product that the company sells just to sell parts for the thing later to the poor saps like me that get suckered into buying it.
I will either have to spend over 100 dollars to fix their product and continue using the marginal product with the flaws that were mentioned knowing that it may fail again or bite the bullet and spend more money I don't have to buy a new bed. Meanwhile I am stuck sleeping on the couch. It seems every product these days come with all kinds of guarantees and warranties but very few actually stand behind their products when they fail. Select Comfort is NOT one of the companies that does.

We purchased this bed Jan. 2004. At first we thought it was the best bed ever, but after sleeping on it for awhile we noticed that the air kept seeping out. They did send us a new pump (then accused us of not sending back the bad one). That seemed to help. We then noticed that the bed sagged in the middle, making it very uncomfortable to sleep on. They then send us a few pieces of foam to insert in the mattress area. It never really did anything. We just kind of figured this is what you had to put up with. I would have to sleep on the very edge of the bed in order to be able to sleep somewhat comfortable. The whole in the middle was awful.
Well, we did not use it for about 2 years, but recently thought we would try it out again. We noticed that the mattress pad's zipper is broken and they want $234.00 to replace it on a bed that is only 4 years old. I have been corresponding with them, asking if I did purchase this mattress pad, would it help with the sagging to which they won't answer that question. I was told it was a man-made product and that unfortunately sometimes there are problems with man-made products. After so many sleepless nights, sore back, shoulder and neck aches, I decided to look online and see if anyone else had this problem. Looks like they do! Now I am concerned about MOLD - I will be checking for that, which is another whole issue. We have not been feeling good since we started to sleep on this bed the beginning of this year.
These beds are not cheap, ours cost $1668.45. Well, I feel better knowing that we are not crazy and not LOVING our sleep number bed as Lindsay Wagner would say on her endorsement for this bed. I wonder if she has ever slept on one for any length of time. We are the ones pictured rolling around on the inner spring mattress, but only we are on our sleep number bed! We have had our Select Comfort beds for over 10 years. We have had our share of problems, such as the hammock effect, and the bed losing air overnight. And most recently, mold. Well, everything that I'd read online about Select Comfort's customer service, was negative. So I dreaded making the call. But when I did get a hold of someone, she was extremely pleasant, and told me that even though I have a prorated warranty, they will send me the parts I needed for free. (I needed new air chambers, foam divider, and foam topper.) I was pleasantly surprised! I explained that we also had the problem of the hammock effect, and she replied that we could have called as soon as it started and they would have sent a new divider. They are made of foam, so they do break down.
Anyhow, I got my first package, containing the chambers, and the divider only 3 business days after calling customer service. I was concerned that I hadn't received the foam topper yet, and had planned to call back the next day, but by the time I got around to the point I was going to call, the foam topper showed up at my doorstep. My guess is that they came from separate locations. I put my bed together with the new parts, and I have to say that all the problems were solved. No more ending up on the box spring in the morning because all the air leaked out, no more hammock, and no more mold. And the new foam topper is even more comfortable than the other one. These air chambers have been pre-treated to hinder mold growth. The mold was a known problem, and I worried they were going to charge me for the replacement parts, but I worried for nothing. I had no problems getting the new parts and getting them free of charge. I slept better last night than I have in years. All because my bed is pretty much like new in condition. Had I known that I could have gotten a new divider and that getting new chambers would solve all of the problems, I would have done so a long time ago! Please call customer care if you are having these problems, they are much more pleasant than they are reported to be!

On May 7, 2004, I purchased a 7000 Queen Mattress from Select Comfort. Two years later the air pump (mattress inflator) failed. The results were that the mattress would deflate every few hours. They replaced the air pump at no cost to me. In November of 2007, the air pump failed again. Select Comfort would not back their product, therefore I was required to purchase a new pump for $204.04. Their position was that the warranty on the bed had expired. The warranty on the bed should not effect the air pump which was replaced less than two years prior. Since the pump is only used to change the air pressure in the mattress, over a two year period the pump was used approximately 20 minutes. In my opinion, Select Comfort should replace the pump at no cost to me. Their air pump should last more than 20 minutes. The second issue with the new air pump is not new. From problems with the pump not working properly to them replacing the foam inside the bed, then the air chambers, then the outer covering because it was sagging, and lastly the pillow top cover. IT WAS HORRIBLE. We finally gave up on it after over a year of chiropractic visits due to severe hip and neck pain. With this model you get separate chambers. I was always on a slant. I switched sides with my husband and shortly after that even on the other side I found myself on a slant. It seemed like his weight was affecting my side of the bed. This went on for 6-8 months and I asked for a refund, after all they represent the bed as having a 20 year warranty. They said it was too late. I had been calling them since the day it was delivered with problems. I think that someone needs to take action and file a class action lawsuit against this company. They have completely mis-represented their product. It is junk. I really could not afford to buy another bed (after all I had already paid over $1600 for this one) but I had no choice. I could not afford to live in pain anymore. I have bought beds from other companies and if they have a 20 year warranty, and they replace it, and it doesn't work you get your $ back. I bought my bed (top of the line 9000, Queen, dual chambers) a little over 2 months ago, and it's been a nightmare from the very beginning. First, I had problems with the installation - the first mattress pad was stained and the foundation cover was ripped. Two weeks later, they sent someone to replace the mattress pad but that person was not authorized to do the foundation. So, another two weeks later, someone comes and puts on the new foundation cover--of course, my having to take the entire bed apart and put it back together each time. This is an all day task that I had to endure 3 times within the 30 day trial. Then, after 32 days, I notice that the bed sags in the middle, and that the mattress poofs away from the bed just at the place where the foundation folds. With further investigation, I find that the gray interfacing on the mattress pad cover is ripped where the bed folds - probably got ripped by so many installation attempts.
So I complain. They tell me to vacuum the cover (as mentioned by others) and flip the pads. Well, when I look at the pads, they have already started to RIP right at the spot where the bed folds. They send me a new mattress cover, but the zipper for the new cover and the old mattress do not line up, which means that I have to take the bed completely apart, remove the air chambers, take out the bolts to the foundation, install the mattress, re-bolt it to the foundation and put it all together again. If I had wanted to do all of this, or been able to do it, I would have done it in the beginning. Of course, they don't tell you all of that when so-called customer service offers to send you out a new pad. So, I have to put the old, raggedy pad back on and send the new one back because I have absolutely no idea how to assemble the bed, nor do I have the means to do it. And what's even better, the box they sent is so huge that I have to call UPS to come and pick it up from my home - and get this - I have to pay for it!
So, $5000 later, I'm stuck with a raggedy bed I haven't even begun to pay for. I had my old box spring mattress for over 10 years (I know - way too long) and covered it with an imitation temperpedic mattress cover purchased from Costco that made it oh-so-comfy. The only reason why I got rid of my old bed was because, well, it was old. Too old. But, it never did me wrong like this new-fangled, expensive, money pit. And, I have the same problems as everyone else: I sleep on the side but I'm drawn to the middle. If I put both sides at the same number, I still feel drawn to the middle. When I level the bed out, it sags in the middle. One side loses pressure religiously. I'm not looking forward to mold and moisture problems that others have related. To say that I am very disappointed is an understatement. I only hope to have finished paying off the bed before I have to buy a new one. I'll definitely check out consumer affairs before I make another purchase!

I purchased a Select mattress 4 years ago, and I love the comfort of it; however I end up in the middle, and as I roll to either side feel like I am going up hill. Also I've had chambers and foam replaced, but every morning I have to unzip and hold a hair dryer to it as the chambers are all wet in the middle. I have to take a vacuum cleaner to puff up the pillow top in the middle. This was at their suggestion when I complained about slump in the middle.
Also I was told that the condensation on the chambers was normal and all mattresses do that, but you cannot get inside regular mattresses. I do feel that they are way overpriced and also take a lot of care to keep them comfortable. I have asthma and have not blamed it on the bed, but now I am beginning to wonder.

I think it should be known that most of the issues that I have read here seem totally biased. I bought my Sleep Number bed 7 years ago and it has been heaven. How could you have issues with a bed you can adjust? Reading some of the emails has made me realize that most of these complaints are from people who have issues and don't know how to remedy them. People actually complain that the can't sleep in the middle of the bed. Well, it is not designed for that. That is why these people probably have sleep and back issue to begin with. You can have the best hammer made but it doesn't mean you can build a house.
I have never had a problem with my bed, but if I did, at least I could replace a single part to fix it. What bed can you do that with? And what really gets me is the people who wrote about the shipping cost for returning the bed. They let you try the bed out for 30 days and you think they should waive the charges? And for those people who have mold in their bed, use a mattress protector and lose weight. Imagine the difference it would make. There is no mattress out there you wouldn't get mold in. Mold is formed from moisture, your moisture....look it up!

We purchased a King size Select Comfort three years ago. From the beginning one side seemed to always lose air. As time progressed the problem became worse. The company had me perform multiple tests to no solution. About 16 months in to ownership they had to replace the pump assembly. Now another 16 months later we need a new pump assembly. Additionally, we now have mold/mildew on the air mattresses. When you try to contact their executives it is impossible. Their product is faulty and they do not stand behind it. My only solution is to dispose of a $3000.00 bed after three years.
Lack of sleep. Cost $3000.00 or $1000.00 per year to have many bad nights of sleep. I often have to sleep on the sofa. I have daily muscle and back pain from poor sleep. I must purchase new mattress and spend more money.

We purchased a queen sleep number, Select Comfort bed (model 5000) around Thanksgiving. From the start, we noticed a very strong chemical/musty odor. The store associate told us to put fabric softener sheets inside the foam lining and the odor would quickly fade. Two weeks later the odor was still so noticeable that our friends noticed the odor emanating from our bedroom! We also notice that the mattress seems to constantly lose air pressure. I Googled Sleep Number bed problems this morning and logged on to ConsumerAffairs.com. Talk about buyer beware! Thank goodness we were within the 30 day return window! Returns wanted us to ship the mattress back not offering to even pay for the shipping! I explained that the delivery crew had removed and disposed of the packaging. Returns then suggested we buy some boxes at WalMart. Keeping my rising temper in check, I advised Returns that they delivered it and should come get it. I was given a return authorization # and advised we would be contacted in 1 - 3 days. Thank you Consumer Affairs!
We're out $1900 for the non-refundable adjustable foundation but hope it will work with another mattress. No physical damage but we're hoping our friends may start visiting again!

My wife and I bought a Select Comfort 5000, Queen Size Bed in February 2005. The bed has been a disaster ever since and we paid about $2,000. We have always been uncomfortable and are experiencing back pain. We sink to the center of the bed when sleeping together. We wanted to replace our mattress cover and Select Comfort wants to charge $400.00 for a replacement cover. Our air pump recently went out and does not work. Select Comfort sold us faulty merchandise. We ordered a new replacement air pump that was covered under warranty and still had to pay $150.00 which they said would have been $600.00 without the warranty. The replacement parts are a total rip-off! The air pump should be replaced for free for their mechanical failure. Also, my credit card was charged and still no air pump. We continue to suffer back pain from the lack of service of slow delivery of the faulty part from customer service.
It gets worse because the bed is filled with mold. We checked the air chambers upon the pump failure and discovered mold on the foam padding and air mattresses on the inside of the bed. The inside of our mattress cover smells from the mold growth. I feel that Select Comfort should give us a refund or replace the bed entirely. The mattress is beyond repair due to the mold.

This bed is terrible!! Totally uncomfortable and the valley in the middle causes my husband and myself to roll together toward each other. The lump running down the center is impossible to lay on or get over if we want to lay close to each other. The sides need air adjustments depending on if one or both of us are in the bed at the time. The air does not seem to stay in the chambers as we set it and constantly need to add air but not in any regular amount.
We only contacted the company once and were told that because we bought a refurbished bed they could not help us with anything--we were totally on our own about our complaints.
My husband had back surgery in 1994 and was fine until about 8 months after sleeping on this bed and complaining constantly. We kept trying to make it work believing it was our fault it was uncomfortable, even buying extra padding as recommended.
He ended up having to have his back operated on again and to this day believes the bed caused a re-injury. I have serious back problems that I deal with daily and have been uncomfortable sleeping on this bed and two others over the past 5 years--it did not take care of anything for me and I cannot say if it made it worse, but I cannot sleep on it any longer.

So we called back, they said did you sit on the bottom of the bed as if this were a crime. This happened several times. We just kept putting props under the bed to keep it up. This kept falling down and we would feel like we are sleeping on a hill falling off. We bought our sleep number bed about a year ago. I feel like a fool when I tell people I have one and they ask me how I like it. I am still paying for the stupid thing and I'm not all that happy with it. My back pain did improve - I woke up on my old mattress feeling like I'd fallen down a mountain in the night - EVERYTHING hurt. Now I wake up relatively pain-free.
I do have a bit of a problem with rolling toward the middle when my husband is not in the bed. My remedy for this problem is to grab his pillow and cuddle it so I CAN'T roll over, or I just turn onto my other side. And when he gets in the bed when I'm lying there, my side poofs up. It's kinda fun (haha), but I don't think it's supposed to do that.
Another problem is that on my side of the bed, the side foam has collapsed. I'm ashamed for anyone to see my bed when no one is in it. It looks like a 40-year old mattress that belonged to an 800 pound person. Our numbers, by some miracle, stay the same (so far) but there are big dips where we lay. Actually, I think WE'RE the big dips. Money is not something we have in surplus by any means, so we are stuck with this stupid bed until we feel like we've gotten our money's worth out of it, or we win the lottery, neither of which may ever happen.
Now that I really think about it, I can't believe how stupid we were for paying so much money for a glorified air mattress. And shame on the company for charging so much in the first place. But I guess they know there's a fool born every minute. And one more thing - I'm half afraid to sleep on my bed because of all the complaints I've read about mold. I'm afraid to go look. Yuck!

I had to pay a prorated amount for refurbished pump, and then after I received it had to pay to ship them the original pump. I called and asked why send the original back when I'd paid for both pumps? Was told if I did not send the original back they would charge me approximately $450.
After much back and forth, and no offer to have them pay for shipping, I have no choice but to pay shipping to return the original pump, and assume that my original pump will not end up in someone else's bedroom as refurbished, or some parts from the original pump--and that Select Comfort will have sold the pump, or parts of it, twice. Even if they find the original defective, I will not receive any credit/reimbursement for the refurbished pump they sold me.

This was a $7000+ bed for us. From the start, it was not a success. My husband discovered he was hotter and more uncomfortable on the Sleep Number bed than even on a normal mattress. Meanwhile, my side seemed to be consistently losing air. I phoned their customer support and was informed that I must just not be lying on the bed when checking the pressure. Ok, fine... I lay on the bed, and guess what, I had set it at 55 the night before, and now it was at 15.
The next night, I set it to 55, and in the morning it was down to 35. I called customer service again and this time I was told that if it was leaking, the drop would always be the same amount. The fact it was something different each morning proved that it wasn't leaking, but rather that I was somehow using it wrong. See... here's the problem I have with that: how exactly does one use a bed incorrectly? I called Customer service back yet again, and this time I was told I needed to test it by removing the air hoses and capping the holes in the mattress with these two little white plastic caps from our kit. I had all the installers had left behind in a box, and there were no, repeat, no little white caps.
The customer service woman insisted they must be there or I had lost them. Then she told me I would have to go down to a local store and pick up a set to run this test for them before they would come out and check out why my side of the bed is losing 20-40 points of air per night. Some nights I wouldn't even sleep on the bed, and it would still lose pressure. As of now, 3 months after we bought the bed, we still haven't had any resolution of the problem of my side losing air, nor of my husband's side having miserable hot spots. The closest we've come to solving the latter is, Select Comfort has come out with a new mattress pad they will happily sell us that will prevent hot spots from developing. As if.
