Before signing up for National Vehicle Protection Services (NVPS) coverage, it’s important to understand which repairs the company will and will not cover. Each plan provides up to seven years or 100,000 miles of vehicle protection.

NVPS offers four coverage plans: exclusionary, comprehensive, enhanced powertrain and powertrain.

• Exclusionary: Covers all repair costs except routine maintenance (e.g., oil changes) and wear and tear (e.g., brake pads or tires).
• Comprehensive: Ideal for vehicles with less than 100,000 miles but with expired manufacturer’s warranties. Covers repairs to engine, transmission, air conditioning (AC), electrical systems, fuel systems, alternators and more.
• Enhanced powertrain: Designed for vehicles with over 100,000 miles. Provides coverage for certain parts of the engine, transmission, electrical system, air conditioning and water pump.
• Powertrain: Coverage is limited to internally lubricated parts of the engine, transmission and water pump.

To get started, you can visit the NVPS’s website to request a free quote. A vehicle protection specialist will contact you to gather information about your vehicle, such as the year, make, model and mileage, which affect plan pricing.

With an NVPS plan, you can choose your own automotive repair and maintenance shop, as long as it is an Automotive Service of Excellence (ASE)-certified shop. Coverage details will vary by plan. However, if repairs are covered under the policy, you’re only responsible for a $100 deductible. NVPS pays all claims directly to the dealer or mechanic. To file a claim, you’ll need to call the company’s claims and customer service department.

NVPS includes free roadside assistance, towing, and a rental car to use while your vehicle is being repaired.

Coverage limits are not disclosed on the site. ConsumerAffairs contacted NVPS to find out more information about coverage limits, but NVPS did not respond.

National Vehicle Protection Services has been serving customers since 2007 and states that its primary goal is customer retention. NVPS lets you choose your own repair shop, and plans include a $100 deductible.

Auto warranty coverage options can vary, but it may be worth the extra cost in certain circumstances. For example, you may consider an auto warranty if you expect costly repairs in the near future and you don’t have the extra savings to cover those costs.

Before you purchase a warranty, though, be sure to weigh the likely repair costs with the warranty premium costs to see if it's a good option for you.
