National Auto Care offers various finance and insurance products, including extended warranties, limited warranties and gap coverage for vehicles. Pros & Cons

    • Various add-on coverage options
    • Work with any licensed repair facility
    • Some plans have no mileage restrictions

    • Have to purchase at a dealership
    • No pricing info online
    • Sample contracts not available online

    Bottom Line

National Auto Care works with more than 5,000 dealers around the country. You can’t purchase a vehicle service contract directly from the company, but you can buy one from the dealer when you purchase your vehicle. The company offers several coverage options.

    What is National Auto Care?

National Auto Care works with dealerships to sell its vehicle service contracts for new and used cars. It’s not a direct-to-consumer provider, so you can’t buy an extended warranty directly from National Auto Care.

Many of the company’s vehicle service agreements come with 24-hour roadside service to help you get back on the road if you have a flat tire, run out of gas or need a jump-start. Roadside protection also includes towing your car to the nearest repair facility (within 50 miles).

The company also provides reimbursement for a rental car so you can have transportation while your vehicle is fixed, and you can add coverage for commercial use if you use your car for Uber, Lyft or another similar service.

In 2023, APCO Holdings acquired the company, so offerings may change.

    National Auto Care warranty coverage

National Auto Care offers several lines and levels of protection, so you’re likely to find coverage that fits within your budget. However, not all its plans are available from all dealers, so you’ll need to confirm your options when you purchase your car.

If you have a car that’s newer than 5 years old with fewer than 60,000 miles, you’re eligible for a wrap warranty, which adds protection to your original manufacturer’s warranty.

For cars up to 15 years old with up to 156,000 miles, you can pick from four different core plans:

    • Powertrain: Basic coverage for the engine, transmission and other parts associated with the vehicle’s powertrain.
    • Medallion: A midlevel plan that covers your powertrain, brakes, steering components, electrical system, heating and air conditioning, front and rear suspension, fuel system, cooling system and the seals and gaskets for all listed parts.
    • Preferred: A stated-component plan that covers everything from the Medallion plan plus components of the anti-lock braking system, cruise control, keyless entry, the main wiring harness and fuel injectors.
    • Pinnacle Protection: A maximum-coverage plan that covers everything except what’s listed in the exclusion section of the contract; for cars 10 years old or newer.

The Elite contracts offer three levels of protection. Each comes with component coverage (i.e., only the items listed in your contract are covered).

    • Powertrain Elite: A limited plan with coverage for several parts of the engine, transmission and drive axle.
    • Standard Elite: A midlevel plan that covers your powertrain, air and heating system, the primary fuel pump, the brake master cylinder, calipers, steering system, front and rear suspension, a few electrical parts (e.g., switches), alternator, and the water pump and blower motor from the cooling system.
    • Premium Elite: High-level coverage for everything from the Standard Elite plan along with additional parts in your brakes, electrical components and cooling systems.

National Auto Care also offers a line of Pre-owned Plus service agreements. These are for vehicles of any age with any number of miles.

    • Engine only: Basic coverage for all internally lubricated parts of the engine, plus a few other components that are specifically listed.
    • Powertrain: A limited-coverage plan that adds protection for the transmission, drive axle assembly and transfer case.
    • Powertrain Plus: Covers the powertrain; listed components of the brakes, steering, electrical, fuel and cooling systems; heating and air conditioning parts; and a few items related to your front and rear suspension.
    • Exclusionary: Covers repairs of any part of your vehicle that’s not specifically listed as an exclusion.

The company also offers several optional coverage add-ons that can extend your protection. These include:

    • High-tech VSA: Covers high-tech features in your vehicle such as navigation systems, rear monitoring cameras and keyless entry.
    • P+6 VSA: Only available for vehicles up to 1 year old with 3,000 miles or fewer; in addition to Pinnacle coverage, it adds six key components: the battery, belts and hoses, brake pads, headlights, lights and windshield wiper blades.
    • GAP: Protection that kicks in if you total your car and owe more than it’s worth.
    • Tire & Wheel: Adds tire and wheel protection for damage from potholes, glass and other debris; also includes mounting and balancing.
    • Complete Protection: Bundles tire and wheel coverage, paintless dent repair, key or remote replacement and windshield repair; includes 24-hour roadside assistance.
    • Key Protection: Covers replacement if you lose your key or remote if it’s stolen or damaged.
    • Theft Deterrent: Can help reduce your insurance premium and provides benefits if your car is stolen and not recovered within 30 days.
    • Excess Wear & Tear: Provides up to $5,000 worth of coverage for excess wear and tear, like scratched or chipped paint, stone bruises and interior stains on leased cars.
    • Paintless Dent Repair: Provides unlimited repair of small dings and dents.
    • Paint & Fabric: Covers damage to your paint and interior stains to keep your car looking new.
    • Windshield: Covers repair or replacement without a deductible if a rock or something else damages your windshield.

    National Auto Care warranty cost

Your auto dealer can provide details and answer questions about National Auto Care pricing. As with other auto warranties, your price depends on a variety of factors, including the age and condition of your vehicle, your location and the level of coverage you purchase.

National Auto Care warranties are sold exclusively through dealers, so you’ll need to speak to your local dealer about any discounts or promotions.

    National Auto Care warranty claims

If your vehicle needs repairs, you can take it to any licensed repair facility. The service writer at the shop then calls the administrator for approval; if National Auto Care grants it, repairs can begin. The company pays the shop directly for all approved repairs.

    National Auto Care warranty FAQ

Can I pick my own mechanic with National Auto Care?

You can take your vehicle to any licensed repair shop for work. However, the shop must call the plan administrator for approval before any repairs are done.

Some of the vehicle service agreements have limitations in place. For example, the Excess Wear & Tear plan has a $5,000 limit, and key protection is limited to $800 per year. Check your contract for other limits.

Can I cancel my National Auto Care warranty plan?

Some National Auto Care service agreements can be canceled. To request a cancellation, you must check with the dealer you originally purchased the plan from.

Where is National Auto Care available?

National Auto Care warranties are available from more than 5,000 dealers and financial institutions across the country.

Is National Auto Care worth it?

If you’re purchasing or leasing a vehicle, a warranty from National Auto Care could be a good option. The company offers several different levels of coverage, so you can pick the one that makes the most sense for you. You can also add on and customize coverage based on your needs.

National Auto Care has some warranty options for vehicles with high mileage, which might benefit you if you have an older used vehicle. You can’t get pricing information on the company website, though, so you’ll have to check with your dealer for specific terms and costs.
