I attempted to update maps as many others have and a third party chat support attempted to assist with the process. Their assistance managed to wipe everything from my unit and was unable to restore it. I sent an email to Magellan support advising what had happened. They informed me that Magellan is not affiliated with any third party support and don't do phone or chat support. All support is done through email because email support helps them keep detailed records about all issues in one place and ensures their ability to retain the chain of events as it occurs as well as our communications with their support team. Unfortunately they don't take the time to go through that chain of events.
I received the same instructions 4 times from 2 different techs. None of which worked by the way. Then when they found out it was out of warranty they were done helping all together. I was told "as much as we would like to help you further, we cannot proceed with service repairs since your device is beyond the one-year warranty period." And then went on to recommend that I purchase a new Magellan device. That will never happen and I won't recommend their products to anyone. I did however give them a piece of my mind via email so that they can retain it in their events as they occurred.

Recently I experience the same problem other customers are going through with Magellan GPS unit. I turn on my unit and it read: Unfortunately, SmartGPS Combo has stopped. After several attempts trying to get it to load I called Magellan Technical Support and was surprise that they no longer offer Tech Support :(. I feel that the company should have sent out a e-mail notice to all of existing customers and gave us heads-up warning about their product or their issues they're having within their company! Now, I have spent my hard earn $$ money on another gadget that is no longer useful (junk). I feel that Magellan should offer a refund or replacement of all units that no longer works! I am a registered user and I'm sure they have my e-mail address. I hope all readers who reads this band together. I was always told: If you don't stand for something, you'll fall for anything. :)

I must confess that I am not technically adept but I was able to easily use my previous GPS. I was unable to get the Roadmate to locate an address - it located gas stations, restaurants, etc. but not an address. For a senior the keypad was so small that I was frequently hitting the wrong key - no way I could keep it in the dash holder and type - had to take it down. Downloaded online manual and it was of little to no use to me - bottom line is I cannot use the unit and as they cannot be returned I gave it away.

The advertising sounds good with "Lifetime Map updates". Read the terms, a Magellan lifetime is 3 years. Goes by quickly and then you have a device with inaccurate maps. From what I can see on the website I cannot purchase new updates. Planned obsolescence.

DO NOT BUY MAGELLAN GPS devices!!! their customer service is non-existent. My Magellan GPS was acting up a little, but not to bad, so I downloaded the “Recovery Tool” for my device, followed the instructions exactly, which wiped and reset my device. However, when it was done “recovering”, there were no maps loaded (none at all). Other than that the unit was working great. I connected it to my PC and went to the spartgpseco.com site using the Chrome browser. Logged in, the site recognized my unit, applied a newer firmware update. But when all was done and over, my device still had zero maps loaded.
With no map updates showing on the smartgpseco.com site for my device I was stuck with a GPS that was ready to function, but had no maps to use to do anything. I might as well had a rock for a GPS. I searched for a way to contact support. After a lot of digging I finally found an email address, so opened a ticket on a Sunday mentioning to them that I needed to Travel the following Saturday.
On Tuesday I received a generic email with instructions on how to connect the device to a PC and go to the smartgpseco.com site and do the same steps I had already done. That same day (Tuesday) I tried it again just to be able to say I followed their instructions, then emailed them saying I still had no maps loaded. I did not get any further reply. So on Thursday I messaged support again and asked them to escalate the ticket, since I had to travel in 2 days.
On Friday night, still no follow up from Magellan support. From what I have read from others and from the experience I have had, my guess is that Magellan does not care about their customers beyond the initial sale of the device. I travel tomorrow and will need to buy a new GPS with money I do not have. Needless to say I will not be buying a Magellan ever again and will be telling as many people that will listen of my experience and telling them to not buy a Magellan either. Way to go Magellan, Way to be short sighted and look only for the short sale instead of trying to retain and build lifetime customers.

I ordered an Magellan Roadmate GPS, model #5375T-LMB, to replace the 8 year old Magellan 2145T GPS I already own but could not update. I did have years of great service from that GPS, but figured it was time to upgrade. Yesterday, 10/1/18 I received my new #5375T GPS. To my surprise, not only are every link supplied for customer support no longer active, I am encountering the exact same problem with linking my computer to the new GPS as I was with my old GPS. I have spent hours trying to just register it, with no luck at all. I even tried a different computer. The SmartGPS ECO program will not load, nor will the Magellan web site even notice the GPS is plugged into my computer. It has me running in a continuous loop.
I called Tech Support twice yesterday and waited on hold for around 45 minutes before I finally became disgusted and hung up. This morning I tried them again, multiple times over the course of two hours (Pacific Time), and kept receiving an answering machine in a language I don't understand. I finally called the company where I ordered the GPS from and talked to one of their Customer Service Reps. He told me the model GPS I ordered is too old to be updated!! This was NOT in the description when I ordered it or I never would have bought it. Besides, it has "Free Lifetime Maps", so why won't the software connect?
Long story short, I can return it for a refund, minus a 15% restocking fee plus I pay return shipping. This is false advertising at the very least, or blatant lies by the company. I have since contacted my credit card company and disputed the sale. Hopefully this will help me get a full refund. I won't ever buy another Magellan product. I hope this helps someone...

I bought a Magellen RoadMate 3065 LT from Canadian Tire in 2014. I bought it because This unit had Lifetime map upgrade, however Magellan says Lifetime updates mean 3 years. After 3 years of use, the unit is now considered obsolete and not eligible for any map updates. I feel lifetime map updates should be longer than just 3 years! I feel as though I was lied too. They should have advertises 3 years map updates, not lifetime updates.

I tried for 45 minutes to get through to Magellan to purchase a part for the mount for a Roadmate RM2622-LM. There is no parts list available. The warehouse sales page shows the specific GPS, but the mounting accessory shown is obviously the wrong one. When I tried to reach customer service, putting in my email and password several times, it would log me in, and I could update my information. The process to register the new GPS failed because the program download had an error. When I tried several times to get a service request to ask for help to get the part, I kept getting ‘Server Error’ messages. Magellan GPS does not do service!

At that time Magellan had an online chat option so they said send them in by courier and they would replace them ($50 for shipping). That was Jan. 2018. 9 months later and still nothing and there is no way to contact the company. I tried sending emails to the email address they originally provided me but the responses stopped in Feb 2018. STAY AWAY from any of Magellan products! I purchased the 3045 several years ago as my first ever GPS. It served me well as far as I knew, however when it came time to update I was never able to make it work on my iMac. I had the newest OS and I also had two Macs. I wound up giving it to a coworker who used a PC and updated it. A year or so ago I also received a 9616T-LM as a gift. The larger screen and better graphics made it preferable to the 3045 except that it seemed to constantly lose the satellite signals when I was driving. I was also against a brick wall with updates. I did manage to open a dialog with them and they offered to help, something that took several months for them to finally get around to.
I tried what they suggested and hit the same brick wall. My computers do not see the connected units and I wind up on a constant loop of download, install, open and back again. Contacting them seems to have gotten me to a point where they will be having me ship them back to them for an update, although I am currently in the midst of another email thread and don't know the final outcome. Count me as another frustrated owner who thought he was getting the better unit over the other brands out there. Guess I am wrong.

I had purchased a Magellan GPS 3045-LM with a lifetime map updates. I have not been able to do an update since the new SmartGPSEco software was implemented although the program tells me that there are updates available, in checking the Magellan website I learned that know they have a disclaimer that the useful life of a GPS is only 3 years hence maps will only be updated during that period as follows:
"Lifetime Maps - For all lifetime map subscriptions, lifetime refers to the useful lifetime of the device, considered to be 3 (three) years from the date of the first use. For all lifetime map subscriptions, you will receive map data updates when such updates are made available on Magellan’s website during the device’s useful life for that compatible Magellan device. “Device’s useful life” refers to the period during which the device has all required technical capabilities, including sufficient memory capacity and current operating system, to download and use current map data. A device’s useful life is considered to be a maximum of 3 (three) years from the date of the first use. A device will be considered past its useful life if it is more than 3 years old or if no updates have been downloaded for more than 2 years (24 months)."

I purchased this Magellan 5230 LM unit because it has both a gps and a dash cam. The first one was for my vehicle and the second was for my wife's car. After about a year they both quit, so I purchased two more after contacting Magellan, even though I was only a few day out of warranty on one of them, they would not help me. I couldn't even send it in for repairs and pay for it myself. Again, just shortly after the warranty period the new gps's failed. All four GPS's had screen problems. If you touched the left corner, it registered as a touch in the middle of the screen. In some parts of the screen it would not detect any presses. They have always been slow starting up right out of the box, and acquiring a signal takes some time.
All four of these units represent quite a investment in one household, everyone failed in the same manner and each time Magellan was extremely unhelpful. I would suggest that you stay away from this model and Magellan products altogether because they love to hide behind their warranty limits even though it is very obvious that they are offering defective items. I will go back to Garmin, I will dig one of my old ones out and I am 100% certain it will work, they just don't have lifetime maps.

I have been using the Roadmate GPS for a few weeks and found that the map was extremely outdated. I have purchased the device in 2018 but the map was 2004. I tried using their new web based content management to update the map but it kept giving an "insufficient storage" error similar to many others that have reviewed the Magellan devices. After countless hours of trial and error I was finally able to create a workaround that would fix the issue. For everyone else that has been tortured by this issue I created a YouTube video to help you out: **. Magellan needs to get its act together and find a viable solution as their technical support team is nonresponsive.

I purchased a RoadMate GPS unit at Best Buy in Houston TX more than a year ago. I did so because I liked the bigger display and the panorama screen. The imagery was attractive and the onscreen navigation intuitive. I was a happy customer in the making. Until I wasn't. Problem #1. Updating maps. A nightmare. A third-party website without logical, understandable instructions. Downloads that failed. Failure that screwed up the operating system. Ultimately requiring a complete reinstall of both operating system + maps. Called customer support. Horrible experience.
Ultimately, the reinstall failed and I returned the unit for a replacement - a rebuilt, used RoadMate. It was better. For a season. Then it wasn't. The touchscreen stopped working. No way to enter data. Unusable. A few days of un-use and then a reprieve. It fixed itself. For a day. Yesterday, I jumped in my Tahoe to discover the unit case had split apart having been pushed apart by a exploded battery. A 1/2 inch gap now prevented the screen front from attaching to the rear portion of the unit.
Called customer support. Third-party, overseas, reps reading from a script. Useless. When I pressed them for a solution, they hung up on me. I called back. 2nd guy hung up on me. 3rd guy told me stuff that was untrue. Done with Magellan. Worse than Comcast. (Never thought I would say that.) I'm taking my split-apart Magellan RoadMate to the driving range tomorrow and will tee it up for a beating with my driver. Wanna watch? Hello Garmin. here I come.

The logs are cryptic, the error messages are worse and customer support (god knows where they are) wants to have remote session to your machine which is not acceptable to many people in this age of security hacks. I will continue to examine their software and try to solve the problem myself. It would be nice if they can tell you anywhere how to trace and debug the software. Did that, installed ok, rebooted computer, went to site again and my GPS is not seen or recognized by the site. We have owned a Magellan Road Mate vehicle GPS for several years. The left side of the touchscreen suddenly became unresponsive so we are unable to use the 'back' button and a number of letters on the keyboard to type in locations. Contacting someone at Magellan proved to be very difficult. Their customer service line is disconnected, no one answers the phone at their head office, and it took one week to get a response to our online request for assistance. In the end, we were told that Magellan does not provide help to customers 12 months after the purchase date. Overall, exceptionally poor customer service.

Their local BBB sent them my complaint and they did not respond to either of two BBB communications over a 60 day period. I have to conclude they are out of business. My recommendation is to try to contact them before you give them your money. There are a lot of better choices in my opinion that hold a lot less risk.

I responded with a picture showing the model number and serial number showing that is should come with lifetime updates. 1 week later they sent me directions on how to update my unit.
I tried to follow the directions but they still asked me to pay for the update. I sent an email back and asked for a number that I could speak to a live person. 2 weeks have now gone by and no answer from them. I've had several Magellan GPS's. A major problem is that when a newer device is offered for sale, the company immediately drops all support for anything older. No drivers, no software --- just try to find a manual for a SporTrak on the Magellan site. If you call support with an issue, the response is to buy the newer unit. Once a GPS device is no longer offered for sale, it's like it never existed if you visit the Magellan site, or call support. If you do get support, it's about money --- everything costs. Magellan wants money for what other GPS makers offer for free.
If you go with Magellan, figure that the lifetime of your device will not be based on how long it works; but how long it takes for a newer model to supersede it. When that happens, you at least will not have to buy a paperweight. And, during the time your unit is in operation, pray you do not have technical issues with it and need to call customer support.

Then in this last March 2018 they advised me to return the unit which I did and they had received the unit in 2 days.

How to get your old Magellan GPS to be recognized by SmartGPS Eco website By Walt ** (Magellan ought to give me a few new GPS for figuring this out for all their customers). I own a Roadmate RV9365T-LMB and a Roadmate 2230T-LM. I bought them new and have been ticked off for at least 4 years now that they wouldn’t update. This is ever since they started using the SmartGPS Eco website. Well, after screwing around for several days and many hours, here is what I came up with and it worked to update both my Roadmates. Now I am just ticked at the company that since 2012 they have determined there is no need to update the RM 2230T-LM map only the software.
Steps to a successful install (using Windows 10 but probably works otherwise as well). 1. Download mgnContentManager.msi from the SmartGPS Eco website. 2. Close Browsers. 3. Run mgnContentManager.msi to install. 4. When it asks what directory to place it in, you can default, but I don’t advise it. Make it simple. Tell it to save to C:\Magellan. Let it install download. 5. Once completed, open the C:\Magellan (or other) directory. 6. Find mgnContentManager.exe file. 7. Double Click on the file. 8. Check Task Manager to see that mgnContentManager is running. (Under Processes shows up as SmartGPS Eco (32 bit). 9. Plug in your Magellan to a USB port. 10. Open your browser (I used Firefox) and voila! Within a minute it recognized my drive and showed what installs to run.
On my two Magellans downloads were successful (although I did have to add a microSD Card to the RV one). I wasn’t sure what size to buy, because some hardware is really picky about what size GB you can use. I chose a SanDisk 16 Gb because I assumed that 16 Gb was a common size in 2012 when the machine was new and SanDisk was not an off brand. The SmartGPS Eco website still says that my GPS devices are not compatible with places and store tabs, but as long as I can use the download updates tab, I DON’T CARE!

As with other Magellan users, they changed their Map Update program to SmartGPS Eco from Content Manager. It no longer recognizes the RoadMate-5045-LTM and I suspect other legacy products. Calling the help center directed me to an India site that tells you your drivers are defective and for a price of $80 for a three year contract, they will correct the drivers and set up a new universal GPS map download program that works. Of course, the USB driver is working just fine and SmartGPS Eco program sees the GPS but just doesn't recognize it.

Updated on 02/12/2019: I purchased a 6615-LM directly from Magellan mainly for the camera. After 1 day, the power switch ceased to function. Magellan said to send it back and upon receipt would send me a new one and reimburse my shipping charges. After waiting and waiting, I was told they never received it so I had to fax them the FedEx proof of delivery. They finally sent me a new one but never reimbursed the charges even after six months of correspondence, calls and promises. Anyway, after 14 months of light use (and now out of warranty), the power switch on the replacement unit also ceased to function. The only way to turn the unit on or off is to plug in and out of the power source. It is also anything but user friendly. Have gone to Garmin. Magellan - never again.

After 2 weeks with receiving no replacement unit, they claimed they had never received the defective unit. Twice I had to send them the proof of delivery receipt from FedEx that it was delivered to them 11/7. I finally received a new unit after another week but no shipping fee reimbursement. It is now March 2018 and after no fewer than a dozen attempts through calls and emails I still have not been reimbursed for the shipping charges. Not a huge amount but a matter of principle. The other issue I had was while the units stated lifetime maps even though they were registered I could not get the maps so after several emails (again) I managed to get them to change the information (the units were bought from CTC). If you are having trouble entering the SmartGPS portal (the wheel keeps turning on the log in page) give Opera a try. It work for me. As for Magellan it looks like they are no longer interested in the auto segment and just leaving loyal customers in the dust. Shame on them.

I'm not going to repeat what I have read current reviews listed. It would be a waste of time. I agree with all of them rated 1 star or less. This company does not belong in business. No possible way to get a map update - immediate response telling you to try again in 48 hours which is worthless, nothing changes. No C.S. phone number, they hide behind a computer generated email message. I ask myself "what is happening to customer service today" but Magellan is leading the way to piss poor customer service. I'll check out TomTom, but any company that does not supply a C.S. phone number will not see my money.

I have owned a Magellan Roadmate for several years now. No complaints about the unit - it is a good unit, it is very accurate, and it works very well. My complaint concerns the method used to access the lifetime free map updates. Formerly, I used the Magellan Content Manager, which worked great. I never had any problems updating the unit software or the maps. Magellan now has switched the updates to a website called SmartGPS Eco. I have found this new website to be absolutely worthless so far. I have had no success in logging on to the site using two of the recommended browsers - Firefox and Chrome. My contacts with customer support have also been useless. I reported the issue on Jan 14 via email. I received a reply on Jan 15 indicating that they are aware of the issue and that I should wait 24-48 hours and try again.
I waited until Jan 18 (72 hours) and tried again. Still no success. I then contacted customer support via Chat. I was told that the website is under maintenance, but they (the Support Team) had not been given any information on when the maintenance would be completed. I continued to wait another 7 days until Jan 25 and I tried again to log on. Once again, no success. I sent another inquiry via email asking when this "maintenance" would be complete and I would be able to log on to the site. I have not yet received a reply to my latest contact. Lifetime map updates aren't worth anything if you cannot access them!

I've had the Magellan 2220 LM for a few years now and never had a problem with the free map updates until now. The interface has changed from Content Manager to "SmartGPS Eco" which in short, doesn't work. Apparently, before I can update my maps I need a software update which I can't get to, so no map updates. I've spent two hours on this on two different computers and I get nothing except being looped around to the same start screen. Even If I try to buy the updates, it doesn't work. I tried to contact them through the support page email address and that too was a total waste of time. I'm heading out tomorrow to buy a new Garmin.

Every time I've attempted to do the update it gets about 2 minutes left and tells me that I have insufficient storage. What a hunk of junk! WARNING: DO NOT BUY. PERIOD!! If you have one, destroy and buy something else, not Magellan. Your privacy may be compromised. This is very serious. I bought both the 5295 and the 5390. Original owner. I liked the idea of a connected GPS. Great concept. However, they always had glitches with freezing, reboots, shutoffs, etc. Too many times on a route. I ALWAYS had issues with Magellan products, so I went to Garmin. Never a problem. BUT, I wanted to give these units another chance. Have had 6 smart GPS units, all junk. But today is the last straw, and I am considering class action against the company.
It began with trying to update a map on the 5295 that was in storage for a year. The map would not update as my unit did not have enough space. This is a typical Magellan problem, so I decided to plug it into my computer to look at the files stored on it. To my surprise, I found a secret folder with 71,659 jpeg files spread over many subfolders. How could that be? I did not put them there. So, I deleted them and the GPS started downloading content via wifi. I thought it was the new map. No, it re-downloaded the same jpegs and folders. Deleted them again and this time, connected to my computer with the SmartGPS program to download the new map. It worked, but the GPS later downloaded the same jpeg files again over wifi after I turned it off.
Confused, I called Magellan customer support. The person asked me about the system version number, map version, but never addressed my concern why my GPS was creating folders and downloading pictures over wifi. Finally, she said it was my computer and can she help me with anything else. In other words, can't help you, bye. I hung up on her. After some thinking about this, the smart GPS is connected to the Magellan cloud. There is no way to disconnect from that. It is always connected.
Therefore, there is no way of knowing who is on that cloud and what content that cloud is being used for. There is no security system that we know of in place to prevent someone from using our GPS for their needs. Our information is compromised by storing contacts, phone numbers, and most important, if we use our smartphone to tether to it, then more info is compromised. Destroy these things and buy something else. If you want to check yours, plug it in your computer, you will be able to see the folders stored on it. Check in this manner: Android/Data/com.mitac.smartGPS/Files/Cloudmade/Hybrid/Attachments (many subfolders in here, each one with files. Mine was many photos).

I bought a RoadMate 6230-LM unit, with dash camera less than two weeks ago. It hasn't been in service for a week and I started having a couple of problems: I couldn't update the maps. After a couple hours of frustration I figured out how to update. You need to remove the micro SD card to get the update to work. If you don't you get an "insufficient storage space" message. I plugged the device into my computer with the USB cable and ran the Magellan Player software to retrieve video. It worked the first time I tried, but then the next time there were no videos visible, even though I could play them on the device. I thought maybe the card got corrupted so I returned it to the DVR slot and formatted the SD card. No luck. When I turn the camera on I get a message "card not formatted". I tried a few times, same result.
Today I called Magellan's 800 number. It's a call centre in the Philippines. They suggested I try a different card. I remembered I had another card I used in a drone and inserted that. It formatted and video was recorded again. It looks like it is a defective SD card. The call centre person said that they would not send a replacement card. The card sent with the device is defective and I haven't even been using the unit for a week now. I asked to speak with a supervisor and was put on hold and disconnected. I called back and was advised that the supervisor was on break and that they would call me back. That was 2 hours ago. I'm not impressed. In addition, the call centre representative said that I should return it to the place purchased. It was an online site (Woot.com, owned by Amazon) and they require you to deal with the company directly for warranty issues. Also, right in the box it says "Please do not return this product to the place of purchase".

I Bought a Roadmate 6615-lm from Magellan for my business. It can take a couple minutes after being turned on to figure out where it is, gets really hot, then the touchscreen becomes unresponsive so you can no longer give any commands to it. 2 weeks earlier I had to send it back to the company for replacement. They wouldn't even make a call tag so I had to pay for shipping. They also made me give them a cc to put a hold on for cross shipment. The hold included shipping and it was about $40.00 more than what I originally paid 2 weeks earlier from them because I bought it on sale and they wouldn't honor the sale price even for the hold. I received the replacement unit several days later. Within a week. The new unit was already having touch screen problems and was getting really hot as well.
I now have another concern. If the unit could start a fire and destroy my vehicle, or even more if it's parked at home when it burns. I have now sent the replacement unit back and paid for shipping again to return it. I was not about to let them put a hold on my cc again and risk paying for another unit when they try to claim it didn't arrive. They have had no sense of urgency, or care how this is a problem for me and my small business that relies on accurate navigation to reach our clients. And to make matters worse, they will willingly and knowingly lie to you about why you can't get updates. First problem is their update software - SmartEcoGps - it's not very smart, difficult to navigate and not user friendly. Second problem is that Magellan changed their map update supplier. The unit can be seen by their software, it will allow me to buy an update to the speed traps. But new roads and POI are two years old. The scam is, according to their own website, "when maps are available." The maps come from a secondary source, as I have twice online chatted with the company. The employee even recognizes they are almost two year old, with no update.
New business open and close, of course they say free map updates, not new POI. Every year my auto GPS has a new map/POI. This is where Auto Android will destroy these companies. Mainly you need a 2015 or newer car and a simple free addition to your car's system and Google maps for free! Yes, you need a data plan, but everyone is giving away data anymore (oh, competition). Car map update are $150 - $350 per car. Again Auto Android will kill that in many cases, just like these personal GPS units. Very unhappy there are no updates, this to me is a outright lie to sell the unit.

I powered it up indoors and programmed several addresses into the "one touch" memory without any problem. I installed it in my wife's car and took it on the road. The unit kept turning itself off every few minutes. After getting back home I took it inside again and it powered up OK and ran for several hours. Again I put it back in the car and had the same problem. I tried powering it back on, and sometimes it would work and sometimes not. After a week or two, the unit went completely berserk with the screen flashing vertical gray stripes and would not power off even after pulling out the power plug. It eventually powered off after running down the internal battery. I contacted MItac customer service, but they were completely useless.
I took it back to Fry's and exchanged it for a new one. I went through the same set up one the new one without a problem and let it run on my desk for several hours without a problem. As soon as I put it in the car and took it on the road, it turned itself off after only 3 minutes of operation. I removed and reinstalled the power plug each time this happened, but got the same results. I put into another car, and had the same results. My theory is that there is a software bug or a hardware limitation that only shows up when the unit is in motion. My theory is that the internal processor gets much busier when in motion that when it is sitting stationary and suffers a fatal software crash. Of course having it work only on my desk is not very useful! I returned the unit to Fry's and got a Garmin Drivesmart 70. I don't have any results on that one yet. Be forewarned!

Early August I contacted through Magellan GPS site forms a concern about being unable to complete my free map updates. On August 18, 2016 I was contacted the company and was given useless instructions to follow, delete content manager, re-install, try to update, etc. I relied again on August 25 to say their suggestions did not work and included screenshots and was ignored repeatedly. I re-sent my concerns again and again and finally on September 4, 2016 I sent a complaint into Better Business Bureau. I heard back from BBB on September 5, 2016 to say that my complaint was being processed. I finally heard from Magellan support late afternoon September 9, 2016 just in time for the weekend when their support does not operate with nothing more than much the same steps as before. I did these same steps September 10, 2016 all afternoon only to get the visual in the screenshots below this review.
I have now requested from Magellan, because I have been ignored and not assisted properly: That they deal with BBB directly to resolve this product issue. That they provide an address to send their useless device back to and refund me fully. That they be alert to the possibility of a class action suit as I see many here on this Consumer Affairs site who have been having similar concerns and complaints with this device. I also asked again today, why, as part of the update process I am being denied my original address content and also being asked to provide an AAA membership #? Weird! Also, I noticed every time I began the process of updating there was another update possible, PhantomALERT premium? Of course this particular update was for an outlay of more money! I wonder if I had chosen this as an update if my entire transaction install and update would have worked?
Anyway, my review for those of you have not bought this device is be forewarned about the updates and install features with this device and also the support from the company. It appears that the free lifetime map update does not install and the company support is severely lacking. For those of us stuck in the middle of trying to get these devices to install updates and function properly, I will continue to inform you as I progress with BBB and possibly actually hear back from this company Magellan. It seems from reviewing others today at Consumers Affairs the rating for Magellan is a dismal 1/5!
Alas, I am shutting down any further attempts to complete the supposed free lifetime map updates or any installations to actually make this device return to functioning at all after just completing my fifth and final attempt today, September 10, 2016 5:00 PM. If everything else I have said in this review hasn't deterred you from buying from Magellan I hope the wasting of an entire afternoon trying to accomplish something that CAN NOT be done will!

They processed the order and it never showed up. Contacted them after two weeks and was told they do not see the order in their system and they processed another order. Even that never showed up.
Contacted them again after another ten days or so. This time I contacted their 800 number (supposed to be a big no-no for folks with out-of-warranty products lol!!). After a long argument for 30 minutes or so that their chat line was not at all helpful, the lady finally processed another order for a replacement. This one arrived in a week. It was a horrible piece with a scratched up screen. The brightness at its max was so low that you cannot see the words at all from certain angles. My original one had no scratches – I handled it with kid gloves and it was bright and beautiful. Besides, it is a very basic model compared to my unit that they ruined with their so-called map update. Anyone out there shopping for a GPS I would advise to stay away from Magellan. Their after sales service is very very poor. They will not be fair and provide me with a new replacement even if they are the ones who have ruined my unit.
Updated on October 1, 2016: Further to my review of this unreliable product dated 07/02/2016, I had received a refurbished replacement from Magellan. That has also died on me within a month.

I have this GPS since 2011 and never had other problems before. Happy with my purchase.

Please folks, for your own good, don't even think about buying any Magellan product. I say this based upon my personal experience and reviews of hundreds of customer evaluations which I have read over about the past five years. This may sound like an emotional, sweeping generalization, but all available evidence is that this company is crooked from bottom to top, endlessly sells worthless, expensive, unreliable or inoperable products, rarely offers customers any useful help, does not stand behind their warranties, and couldn't care less. Don't take my word for it. Surf the net and do the numbers.
The business model seems to be that there is an endless supply of new and innocent customers who know nothing about Magellan, its products, and the company track record. If a good advertising program is maintained, and distributors go along with the scam, the gravy train can chug along forever. There is no need to stand behind anything, and it is extremely unlikely that any angry customer, or group of them, would have the money or motivation to launch and stick with a meaningful class action lawsuit to put this despicable company out of business permanently. Sadly, they are probably right. But it would be most entertaining to see the hornets nest that would be stirred up should Magellan itself ever attempt to use the courts to try to silence any of its countless angry critics.
A few years ago, knowing nothing about the company, I spent over $300 on a wide screen Magellan 9055-LM GPS. That's the version with the supposed lifetime map updates. They provided one update, count 'em, one. That's it. End of story. And the GPS has seldom worked predictably, from the day it was new. Sometimes it will power up and sometimes not. I wasted a lot of time checking connections, power sources, and talking with their online techs. Various menu items did not work, particularly Points of Interest. It would just lock up the system. Seems that a tech allowed as how they knew about all these problems but didn't know if Magellan planned to fix any of them. Curious, I thought.
They offered to replace my unit, but said the new one would be "just the same". I said no thanks, and tried to make do. The thing has been a nightmare... sometimes works, sorta. There has been one system software update, which helped briefly. On long turnpike trips of 500 miles or more, it tells me that every exit is the one where I should get off. It sometimes tries to loop me around in circles. Sometimes it will power up, sometimes not. The problem is unrelated to connections, power supply, temperature, season, or anything else that I can determine. I could write a book on everything it doesn't do, but the Roadmate 9055 is just a total loser.
A girlfriend had similar unhappy experiences with her Roadmate 3055, until it simply locked up and became completely unusable... She gave it to me, to play with or throw away. I eventually figured out that Magellan had updated the whole software package, without telling users that their GPSs would become junk unless they would change the software, which I did. Now it works, sometimes, maybe. Most recently, it simply stops functioning, with the display staying on a certain spot on a certain route, no matter where you really are or how many times you power down and reboot. I have found ways to trick it into erasing its location memory and searching for a new location. But I shouldn't have to.
The product should just work, or the maker should offer suggestions for a fix or replacement. They are the ones who did it, and sold the trash to thousands of trusting customers for actual money. We need cell blocks with big signs marked "Reserved for Magellan". Bank robber Willie Sutton couldn't get away with it. Why should some guys in an office in California?
On my advice, the girlfriend bought a Garmin GPS, and I have another of their models, also. Both have been totally reliable and trouble free. I now drive with the other two Magellan GPSs in one of my cars, playing Magellan roulette for my own entertainment. Will one work, both, or neither? But in my experience, a Magellan GPS should never ever be trusted when you actually need guidance.
For awhile, I tried to be patient and talk with techs on the telephone, trying to fix problems. A couple of them really did try, but the product is a loser. And the corporate level people won't even answer a civil, constructive letter asking for help or an adjustment. That told me all I needed to know. These guys are simply giving their customer base the figurative finger. "Give us the money and shut up". Ever hear of any Magellan product being used for aircraft navigation, where it counts? Of course not. As a one time pilot, I keep up with such things. But some of the other consumer GPS manufacturers do. I rest my case. But please, please, please. Do yourself a favor and stay as far away from Magellan products as you can get. And ask your friends about their GPS experiences, before buying. I didn't.

I bought the Case at a great discount so I'm not complaining about price. What I'm disgusted about is their Customer Service. When I bought it new in a sealed package, I discovered the headphone jack didn't work. The self help suggests getting a special kind of adapter that is sold by Apple. Well, Apple doesn't sell it and the description of this adapter is rather vague. So I tried emailing them several times over a week for details on the specifications but no response. I tried Chat but no one ever came on. So I tried calling the Customer Service # and after waiting on hold for 30 minutes (Nonpeak Time) I was given a Lady who had no interest in helping me, and acted like she had no record of the product. She finally said they no longer make it so they wouldn't provide any support. I pointed out that it's still offered on their site!!! She said that didn't matter. I asked to speak to her Supervisor, she didn't want to do that but I persisted.
She supposedly was putting me through to the Supervisor and I thought I was on hold, but after 30 minutes I realized that she had disconnected me. I'm sure this was no accident. I was never rude to her but I got this treatment anyway. Luckily I hadn't spent a lot of money with Magellan, I just wasted hours of my time and all this just for the need of a little information, not anything that would have cost them anything. Don't buy from Magellan, they obviously care nothing about their Customers once the sale is made, and from what I'm reading from others experiences they are predatory.

It is terribly inaccurate with a very unreliable battery. I had much difficulty contacting their customer service. Every email I sent was completely ignored! I never got a response. I tried the online chat feature. The best they could do was give me a phone number to call! When I called on the phone, I was on hold for about 30 minutes! Finally I got through and they agreed to send me a replacement unit. However, they charged me for it offering a refund if I sent the first one back.
When I finally received the replacement, I found to my dismay that it operates as worthless as the first unit! I again had much trouble contacting customer service. They again offered me a replacement, but at this point I just wanted a refund. Partly because I had to pay shipping again (for the third time). They refuse to offer a refund because I am outside the 30-day time period from the original purchase. Of course it was longer than 30 days because of the time I waited for a response from my 3 emails I sent out every week! The replacement unit was shipped promptly and after updating the maps and software it worked great for about a week. Then just before a trip, I plugged it in, powered it up and it just went into a loop "loading please wait"... "re-loading please wait"... over and over.
The chat folks said to reset it by sliding the top power button, but the RV9490 does not have a top power button. It's on the left side and does not slide. The unit was dead. The chat folks gave me another return authorization and again refused to pay shipping which I did again. It's now been over two weeks. They have received the defective unit and I'm still waiting for confirmation of the shipping of 3rd replacement. I have sent several emails to get the status and receive a case # but no reply. Found there was a map update and went to the page to pay for it via credit card. (Btw no mention on the purchase page about refund/return policies.) Paid for update, credit card accepting, went back to content manager and no software there to download??? Could not reach anyone as office closed for weekend and also no online tech support for the same reason.
Anyway 3 days into our trip using a hotspot I see download ready to update so downloaded and got PND needs updating. I was able to start an online chat with tech support and they altered the download. They said this would cure PND error, but as time was short I waited a day as I was on the road again. Finally got to download it and got PND error again. So started my 2nd online chat session was told I needed to delete content manager temp file and uninstall and the reinstall content manager, then download and update map (remember I'm on the road here LOL). So did all that and guess what I got? The PND needs updating message. Eight days into my trip I stayed overnight in hotel and started my 3rd online chat session. The tech said the wrong update had been applied to my map update area and assured me he had fixed it with another alteration to my subscription.
Well guess what? I downloaded update again and still got, yes, that right, PND need updating so pointed this out to tech and said enough is enough. Give me a phone number of someone I could call and complain to, but he wouldn't do that and said he would have a supervisor call me. Well I guess it was all talk because as of yet still no call back. I purchased the watch with the understanding that it had a 6-11 month battery life. After 5 months of limited use, I received a "low battery" warning on the watch. I went to replace the battery and noticed the case was cracked around the screw I would need to remove to replace the battery. I contacted Magellan via email to ask for help in replacing the watch due to the crack. At that time, I also asked why the battery was dying so early when it should have a 6-11 month life. The portion of the response I took issue with is as follows:
If you use in app mode constantly every day for many hours then the battery can be depleted in a week. If you use in watch mode it can last many months. If you use in app mode and backlight on (i.e at night) then it can last only a hour or 2. I purchased the device to use in "app mode" and intended to use it for a few hours everyday.
According to the email, I cannot expect the battery life advertised if I use the device as intended. The battery life advertised only applies if the device is used merely as a watch. This is false and misleading advertising. I attempted to contact Magellan again to discuss the matter. Another email directed me to contact Magellan via phone or online chat. The online chat was not helpful. After two hours on the phone, I was not able to get an answer as to why the battery life differs so much from the advertised battery life. The individual I spoke to (**) would not connect me to a supervisor, saying he was "top of the chain." He offered to replace the device since it is cracked, but said it is not possible for the company to process a return. A separate communication via Facebook said they would offer a refund if I was not happy with the battery life of the new watch.
I agreed to let Magellan GPS replace the watch and was told the new watch would be sent as soon as they received my old one. The old watch was received by Magellan on May 11 (Proof-of-delivery was received from FedEx and noted as sign for by "STHY"). I have been waiting nearly three weeks and I have not received the new watch. I cannot get Magellan to let me know when I will receive the watch. I have been trying to communicate with Magellan and the only answer I have gotten was "we are looking into your order" with no further response after two days. Magellan resolved my issue with a refurbished unit without my asking for one. I only asked what I could do to get it to boot. This was all taken care of prior to my posting the review.
Original Review: April 20, 2015
I received an email from Magellan stating I had a map update available. I connected the unit to the computer and proceeded with the update. First I had to update the plugin on the browser. After 5 attempts it finally took and stopped asking me to update the plugin. In order to update the map I first had to update the firmware. That accomplished the map update button was available. I proceeded to update the map.
When it finished it said the GPS would restart in 15 seconds. When it restarted it would only go to the Magellan logo screen and nothing else. Off and on several times and still nothing except the logo screen. I left it on overnight and even after that still only the logo screen. No attempt to even get past it to the boot graphic. Online chat with Magellan this morning determined the update had failed with no way to fix it. Magellan is however going to send a "Refurbished 5295T" to replace it. This is at no charge and I was told not to send the old one back.
While I am not happy about the whole situation and the almost 10 days without it is going to cause me some discomfort overall I have to say I came out as well as can be expected based on other reviews. I would suggest if you have a working Magellan GPS update at your own risk.

I purchased my Magellan Roadmate RV9165T-LM brand new in April of 2013. I purchased the RV model because it allows the user to program vehicle parameters into the unit. With my very large 5th wheel programmed (length, height, etc.) the unit still directed us onto roads that weren't fit for travel with such a large vehicle. It also took us on roads where our vehicle exceeded the heights of some bridges. But the real issue ended up being that after using it only three times, the unit displayed a USB connection icon and failed to initialize. I tried resetting the unit. I tried charging the unit on both the vehicle charger and a separate wall charger. I attempted to update the firmware and software using Magellan's Content Manager, all to no avail.
I contacted Magellan, and they, of course, advised me that my one year warranty was up and that they would not offer to fix or replace my failed unit. I didn't expect a warranty replacement since the term of the warranty was clear, but Magellan only offered a "customer loyalty" discount on a new unit which was hardly discounted enough to make me buy another piece of junk. Furthermore, they didn't offer the RV specific unit in the discount plan.
After having no success with Magellan, I opened the unit myself and replaced the battery, hoping that a bad battery might be the cause of the problem. With the new battery, the same problem persisted. I then contacted an expert on JustAsk in the hope of salvaging my $350.00 piece of junk. The expert went down a laundry list of possible fixes all of which I'd already attempted, only to conclude that the unit was not fixable. My advice: Do not buy this GPS. It is a waste of good money. If I were to purchase another RV GPS I would buy a Garmin. I've owned several Garmin GPS's both auto and marine and have never had any issues. Hope this is helpful.

The current unit I just recently purchased is a 9212T-LM. Unfortunately, the software was not working correctly. Tried the "Content Manager" to install a software update. However, "Content Manager" did not find any. I own a 9250T-LM and I copy the files from one unit into the other. That solved the boot problem of the 9212T-LM. However, the address search does not work correctly, POI is not working, City Center is not working. These issues are all related to the search function. The other options are working. Magellan's technical support was:
"We apologize about all the inconvenience. However, please be advised that the RoadMate 9212T-LM and the RoadMate 9250T-LMB use different software. Although the RoadMate 9212T-LM boot up after copying the files from the RoadMate 9250T-LMB, it will not be able to load the unit's map / POI data as it is not being supported. Installing other software or files to the unit may cause this files to be corrupted. Please be informed that it would automatically void the unit's warranty.
In as much as we would like to further assist you, the best option we can offer is to participate in our Customer Loyalty Program wherein you can purchase a brand new Magellan GPS unit at a discounted price, with all of the latest technological advances, updated maps, and a full one-year manufacturer's warranty. You may refer to the list below for the latest Magellan models available through Customer Loyalty Program, along with their corresponding discounted price. Magellan RoadMate Series (brand new): 1. RoadMate 5230T-LM, $84.99; 2. RoadMate 2230T-LM, $74.99; 3. RoadMate 5265T-LMB, $99.99."
The main reason the 9212T-LM was purchased is because it is a 7" screen and easy to read. Magellan wants me to spend more money to buy a smaller unit. What a joke! As of today, this GPS unit is still sitting on my desk as paper weight and going nowhere with Magellan support. The only thing I need is the original software to re-loaded and close this chapter with this company. Never again buy Magellan's product. By the way, Magellan will not honor their products if purchased through Ebay even when they are brand new and sealed. Another reason not to buy from Magellan.

Magellan Roadmate 5045-LM is junk! All they want is to make you buy another one! I don't own the unit, but I've had to help my friend as I am an electronic technician. At first glance all it needs is mini USB port because the battery was completely drained and the unit is not turning on - pure and clear. So, I found similar mini USB jack on eBay.com and installed it, then I plugged it in to the wall charger and tried to turn it on, the unit just makes an attempt and then it died. Then I think that the battery was deeply discharged I let it charge as per manual for 4 hours. After that I've got about 4-5 minutes running and GPS returned a message that battery is low and unit goes off while still plugged to the wall charger (again as per manual 2.0 Amps 5 V DC).
As I am getting curious of what is going on, I got some measurements with my Fluke and realized that the battery is not actually charging while unit is on and plugged to the charger even though it shows on the screen that the battery is being charged. As we talking about Lithium battery I was sure that original battery is bad I ordered new one and give it 6 hours charge before turning unit on. Now on the new battery alone unit runs for about 2 hours (plus minus few minutes) but when plugged in it still drains battery instead of charging it and providing enough power for the unit. Last experiment was with fully charged battery and charger - all I've got is about 3 and a half hours. After analyzing hundreds of customers reviews and complains about battery lasting for 1 to 2 years and bad mini USB connectors (I suspect they where DESTROYED because of this problem) I can say why - that is either firmware if it controls battery charge or some stupid engineer designed this unit or it was a conspiracy to sell them like a hotcakes!

After 2 years of using my Magellan Roadmate 5236T-LM it started to not react to touch commands. Last week it finally died and would not respond to the Menu touch and therefore was unusable. I attempted to contact Magellan to get instructions how to best get my unit back up and running, only to find out that if the unit is out of warranty (one year) the only contact one can make is through online chat. I contacted Magellan through their chat and was connected with a Eevette? She was very polite and trying to be helpful. She asked me to turn my Roadmate unit off and back on and attempt to open the unit with her guidance. This process did not work. She then asked me to reset the unit with a paper clip at the pin hole in the back of the unit. Again to no avail.
She then suggested that the only thing she could do for me was to offer me a choice of two replacement units at a cost of $59 or $79 or something in that neighborhood. I inquired if there was a Magellan Roadmate service Center that could see if they could repair my unit before I purchased a new one. Her polite response was, "Sorry, but Magellan does not have repair centers." I was shocked and decided to never purchase an other Magellan product. It is unconscionable to me from a service and customer relations program that Magellan could care less about customers and only wants to sell you a new unit. No, thank you.

I have purchased two Magellan Roadmate units through Costco, one for my wife and one for my in-laws. The one for my wife is the 1700 with the backup camera system. Installation took me about 30 minutes and the camera has worked every time the car is put into reverse. Both units have worked well. However, the 1700 has been replaced twice for free due to screen problems. I think I have gotten the replacements because I have involved Costco in dealing with Magellan. The problem is getting map updates. The only updates available are for Europe and cost $99.99. I don't need or want Europe maps. Since I have had both units for 3 to 4 years, I know there have been new roads built and others modified, including the freeway on ramp that I use almost daily.
Magellan support is poor, but at least my units work fine, even when we deviate from the recommended route. The units re-calibrate the route and adjust within a few seconds. Despite this appearance of good performance, the 3 different smart phones we have (mine, my wife's and our daughter's) all outperform the GPS in nearly every measure. The 1700 has only about a 30 minute battery life, so it is useless unless connected to the car charger. Once these units go for good, I will look at other options than Magellan.

I've had a Magellan RoadMate 1420 for, maybe, 2 years. It's worked great and I've always taken good care of it. I considered updating the maps so I went to their website which immediately tells us to make sure the firmware is updated and current prior to a map update. My firmware was not current so I set up to do the update. Partially through the procedure, which is obviously a flash-ROM overwrite, the process choked and I've been unsuccessful getting it to either continue the update or restore my unit to the original... the PS is bricked and will no longer "boot up".
After around 2 months of *numerous* emails to their "tech support", and a snail-mail personal letter to Peggy Fong, the CEO of Magellan, all I've heard is 2 or 3 half-baked responses from some employee who couldn't care less. Even the CEO never answered a *personal* letter, or, at least, would have it answered by someone. Meanwhile I've been without a GPS. All this because their firmware update process failed. I'd expect *something*, anything, meaningful from them, but they're totally disinterested. All they'd have to do to make a happy customer is tell me to send it to them so they can rewrite the firmware... about 5 minutes of a "tech support" person's time. There's not a *chance* I'll ever own another Magellan, but I will go to great lengths to make this unpleasant experience known to whomever I can, and I now have a Garmin that works at least as well as the Magellan. What ever happened to the days when companies actually supported their products?

I purchased this GPS unit in July 2013. I used it once or twice. Last week (about 10 months after last using it), it was time to check it out for an upcoming trip. The GPS continued to cycle on and off even when plugged into a charger. I even tried the car charger thinking it was special for the GPS. Still the same problem: inconsistent connection and continued powering off. Finally, I was able to connect and taped the connector to the unit to keep it charging. After it was connected for a few hours, I decided to update the maps (lifetime etc.) and it took about a day of being connected to the computer to finally finish that.
Now it was time for more setup, so I plugged the GPS into a portable battery charging unit and took it outdoors to set it up. It found my current location but the time and date were never updated to be correct. Finally, I decided to try it for a road trip and it just continued to display the original location... No updating or map changes. I returned from the test trip and decided to check my warranty status... expired! No support! Recommended to buy a new unit by the web site Q&A's and support links. What a worthless GPS company! I decided, since it was a brick anyway, to disassemble it and check the battery/charging connections. Unit disassembled and reassembled and powers on, but still locked into the original location and with an invalid time. There does not even seem to be a "hard-reset" on the unit (even when disassembled) that allows you to clear all information and start fresh. This GPS is worthless (not even a correct clock) and I will need to replace it. BUT CERTAINLY NOT WITH A PRODUCT MADE BY MAGELLAN. So, do not buy their GPS products or anything else this company might sell.

I bought this Magellan 2120T since it came with life time map updates which I needed because a lot of changes have been made to my city. Updated when I first bought it. Now I go to update my Magellan maps and I can't. Been trying for days now. All sorts of issues. This makes me NEVER to buy a Magellan EVER again. I should have just bought a TomTom like I had before. It was reliable but used so I couldn't update it. I only bought the Magellan because it was the cheapest (NOW I SEE WHY). Never will I buy a GPS with lifetime map updates from Magellan because you are paying for nothing if you cannot update it. I have been trying for days.
Explanation of the pictures: I had a hard time getting it to launch so I had to update the software and then launch it manually because the GPS updater doesn't seem to know to run when I plug the GPS into the USB of the computer. It does say there is a map update. When I hit update it brings me to their website which asks what type of GPS and all that. All I can figure is because it says BUY. I paid for map updates for LIFE! I still even have the box that even SAYS so on the box!!!!! When I tried to contact support I got a page that said it submitted and then it went to another page and said Invalid assigned reference key **. I even looked on the site to try to figure out what I was doing wrong. I gave up and then tried again today... now the server says it is down!
I am so fed up! I am going back to TomTom even though it is more expensive! Why? Because even though it is the only other GPS I have ever used and was a used one that wouldn't keep power so I had to keep it plugged in, it WORKED! Yes it worked! Also since I didn't have life time map updates on the TomTom I was still able to get user submitted updates. I did mention that to Magellan when I first bought this Magellan and they said they never thought about doing that. Summarized evaluation of Magellan 2120T: Over all it seems like TomTom is way ahead of the game and Magellan cannot even fulfill what it says it will for the money you pay.

I understand now why a company can slowly be overtaken by competition especially when they have such poor customer support. I purchased a new Magellan RoadMate GPS and just used it on a vacation trip. To my surprise, it started receiving advertisement on screen. There is no way to turn them off according the Magellan's website. I did not agree to receive this spam in my vehicle and do not want advertisement coming in on my GPS. This is a scam and should not be allowed or at least, they should tell you and pay you to receive these advertisement. I kept getting advertisements for Sears and Olive Garden. I will never purchase a Magellan product again.

I purchased a refurbished RoadMate 2200T from Newegg.com. I was satisfied until I came to purchase an upgrade. They put their upgrade on sale at finally a reasonable price except there is no product to purchase, conveniently "out of stock". I also bought their Triton 1500 GPS. Don’t do it. It's the most complicated piece of ** I have ever owned. I have tried everything I know to understand this thing and no one I know could get it to work either in spite of downloading updates and anything else we thought would help. The instructions are absolutely no use. I wasted my money on this useless piece of **. I strongly advise against buying these items or anything else from Magellan! I’m out of about $400.00 and still don't have a useable product.

I purchased a factory refurb Magellan RoadMate 1200 on 10/26/2009. This unit was sold with old obsolete maps but the unit does not indicate a version. From Magellan's website, I see they have a Spring 2009 Map Update. I requested this update free since my unit was sold in October and should have been current when purchased. Magellan says no and that I had to request this within 30 days of purchase. They said I must pay $80 for the maps (minus 15% discount if AAA member). Isn't it reasonable to expect a GPS unit to contain maps released six months prior to purchase?

I had purchased the Magellan Maestro 4250 about a year ago. I used the unit maybe 10 times and made sure to keep it from extreme temperature. I attempted to use it recently and the screen froze up. After calling customer service, which by the way is located in India somewhere, they explained to me they cannot repair the unit and that if I wanted a new one I could send my unit, which was approximately $400.00. I sent it to them and received a different "refurbished" unit at a cost. It seems absurd to me that the only thing the company can offer me is a refurbished version and that may not even be my model. According to the blogs I have read, this seems to be a problem that many consumers have come across leaving them with a broken unit and no other recourse to fix it. It amazes me that this is a well-known glitch to the company and they refuse to fix it. It seems to be a fixed operation in which the company benefits. I’m not a happy consumer.

I ordered a map update from their site. I used the drop-down menus that showed me which update to get for my unit. My unit is registered with them as well, so they know which unit I have. They sent me an update on an SD card that is incompatible with my unit. They refuse to give me a refund of any kind. There is no update available for my unit, even though their site says that there is. The result is $100 down the drain for an SD card that is totally useless to me.

I recently bought a refurbished Magellan GPS at Buy.com. When I powered it on, it just started selecting menus even though I didn't touch the screen. The unit comes with a 90-day warranty from Magellan so I contacted them and they repaired it. When I received it back from Magellan, I noticed the power button wasn't working properly so I contacted Magellan again and again, I returned it to them which they received on 6/8. I did hear from them until Friday, 6/12 (after work hours) at which time I got an email saying my order was canceled with no explanation. On Monday, I called them up and asked "what happened? You received it on Monday and then Friday you canceled with no explanation". I spoke to Ryan who said that they needed to change the RA number because it was put in incorrectly.
On 6/18, I received the unit via FedEx. Upon power on, the unit display is shattered. I spoke to Jonas who wouldn't help unless I email a picture, which I did. Jonas called back later saying they will send me a new unit. On 6/23, I received the new unit which was packaged in a refurbished box just like the one I bought. When I powered it on, I noticed it took a long time to power on. Then I noticed there is a slight delay when touching the display and its response. I also noticed that the unit still had the previous owner's information stored. On 6/24, I spoke to David who said there is nothing that can be done except upgrade the firmware. I said, "what about the screen not responding to touch and the fact that there is another user's info?". He said the firmware should take care of that. I told him I was told I will receive a new unit and this clearly is not what I got. He basically said there is nothing that can be done.

I was trying to get an unlock code for some Magellan software that I purchased with my Magellan GPS. After many emails half of which were not replied to, I was transferred to a higher level of tech support. I never received another email after that! I tried half a dozen times to get some answers but got nothing! In order to get my GPS unit to work properly, I'm forced to purchase more software from them at a cost of around $100, something that I refuse to do. I now have to sell my useless unit and get one from a different company, Garmin perhaps?

I bought a Magellan GPS and it stopped working. I got a replacement from Circuit City, due to the fact is was under the 10 day return limit. Well, that one also stopped working. I sent it in for repair under the warranty agreement. It came back to me, but the unit was still not working. I sent it back to the repair center and to date, they have not sent me one word on what is going on with repair or when I will get it back, hopefully in working order. I have sent two letters to Mr. Chane requesting my money back since their product doesn't work. Not one response form any of them.
I am out 449 dollars for a product that has never work for more than 8 days and at this time I do not have the GPS and it seems Magellan Corp is just ignoring my request and letters.

Don't be fooled by the phone #'s listed on the contact us portion of their website. NONE of the phone #'s listed on Magellan's website lead you to ANYONE that can speak English- they have outsourced their customer service to India and the Philippines where each rep has been given an American name so as not to upset you even more when you realize they can't do anything for you and you can't understand a word they're saying.
Do a little searching b4 purchasing a Magellan- I, unfortunately, didn't and read about the horror stories after I encountered an issue.
I purchased my unit in June and it started freezing up within the first couple of weeks. I got a Repair # and shipped it UPS to their Repair Center supposedly in Ft. Worth, TX in September. I called 12 times from October - November and was on the phone for at least half an hour each time (usually an hour). The reps I spoke with could never pull up my account even though I had the Repair # and account # so they blamed it on their systems being down each time.
After 3 months and no resolution in sight I started digging around on the internet and found that MANY other people had stories as bad or worse as mine- 1 guy said it had been 7 months and still not a word from the company about his unit. Thankfully a few other unhappy customers posted the email address of some internal employees that were helpful in resolving their issue. Robert Gallegos- rgallegos@magellangps.com is the person I emailed with and he sent me out a brand-new unit within a 2 weeks of receiving my complaint. It didn't hurt that I also filed a complaint with the BBB.
My advice- go with a GARMIN!

Today i called and the person"Max" told me its out of warranty and they could not ship the item,I told him that I've been calling for a year and at the time it was still in warranty! He told me to hold and came back and said he talked to a Manager and said what he would do is; send me a brand new "Magellan 4210" for free because he can see the problems from his computer and the calls I,ve made.He asked me for my address so he can ship the unit to me. After giving my info he asked for a Credit Card number!
i asked him why and he said i will not be charged anything on the card he said it was so that after he ships the unit i have to send the old unit back and if i do not after a month they will charge me $499.00 for the price of the new unit! I told him i can't do that because of my trust in the company and all the promises they told me!i asked him how much the Mistro 4210GPS cost and he told me $499.00.I asked him if i will get a Tracking number if i did this and he said No. I asked him for a case number for my complaint and he said he could not give me one cuz his computer is not working! He then said he will call me back tomorrow and hung up!Now i decided to go on the magellan web site to see the price of the "Mistro 4210" The price is $200.00 dollars less then he told me!!! Also when i called i asked him instead of using my credit card how about if i ship my unit to him and once he gets it he could ship me the new"Mistro 4210GPS unit? He said he could not do it!
Aready he lied! he told me his computer was not working but earlier he said he can see that i called for over a year from the the log on the computer!

I spoke to a supervisor on Jan 3, 2008 and was toldI would have an answer and that he would call me by the end of the day on Jan 4, 2008. He never did.I then called twice and was hung up on then called again a third time and was told of course that the department who could help me was already closed for the day and to call back again on Monday. This has gone on now for three weeks. I either want a new unit or my old one fixed. I don't think this is too much to ask for.

I called Magellan and to get someone who did not speak English on the phone. They promised me it would be a week, a week later I had not received my GPS. I called back to speak to someone else that did not speak English, I ended up just upgrading the unit for almost $300 and they took my credit card information again.
I have talked to the customer service department in India over a dozen times and every time they give me a new date in which I will receive my new unit. Here it is December 12 and still to unit. I can not get anyone on the phone to HELP ME.
I have called corporate to get the same message as the over seas number. I have tried to get a real person at corporate on the phone by trying different departments, only to get voicemails that are full. I finally got a voicemail that was not full and left a message for the Quality Department and never received a call back.

My wife purchased A Sport Trac Map handheld GPS unit several years ago and it had never been used or opened until recently. I tried to upload a a disc that came with the unit. It started to load and then the unit locked up and then shut off all together. I contacted customer support and they advised me the unit was no longer functional and not repairable as the problem was caused by the units wiring or disc problem and that it was a known problem they had and no longer make the model. They offered to sell me a different model at a reduced price being I had been a Magellan customer and the new unit itself would cost $119.00 not the package unit. We had already paid $249.00 for the package unit and if thet knew the units had a problem a recall should have been made for a full refund or provide a similar unit if desired. I do not feel we should have to pay additional to get another unit.

I contacted Magellan technical support via e-mail approximately February 21, 2007, regarding a problem with my SporTrak Map GPS unit. Over the next few days I had two e-mail contacts and two phone calls with their technical support staff in order to solve the problem, which, by February 28, had not been resolved. I then requested a RMA (Return Materials Authorization) number from Magellan so that my unit could be physically returned to the company and fixed, as suggested by Magellan in my GPS user's manual.
Suffice it to say, my request for a RMA number resulted in no RMA number being offered. I then contacted Magellan three separate times from February 28 through March 12 requesting continued support for my problem, but Magellan has not contacted me back. On my last contact with Magellan on March 12 I informed them that if they did not contact me and resume technical support that I would contact the Better Business Bureau, and now 72 hours later I am filing my complaint. I would like to add that at no time did I become nasty and/or use profanity, and the company's own telephone recordings of the phone calls, as well as my copies of the relevant e-mails, will clearly show that no actions by me ought to have caused Magellan to stop offering technical support for their product.
Furthermore, I contacted the Better Business Bureau office in Silicon Valley in order to resolve this problem, with no resolution. Magellan declined to answer the BBB's inquiries about this issue.

Purchased Explorist 500, this is suppossed to be rugged device, but comes with a data cable that is more fragile than a new born baby and does not work reliably. The design it completely defective and unreasonable for the consumer user, does not even come with instructions on how to connect the cable (it has two methods with different results and purpose), in fact a third party company makes a replace more reliable cable because magellan will not. Thier TOPO 3D software is also defective as it plots coordinates over 500 feet or more from actually position (can be several large city blocks off).
Requests for support via thier website form were completely ignored. Called thier tech support, and got no where, and they were supposed to get back to me. Called many times to day, and got nothing but the run around, no where could I get a committment from anyone to address the issues with the defective product. At this point I have over $500 of thier stuff and nothing to show for it. I was even abrubtly hung up on by the customer service person who took my complaint. This company is very arrogant, This product line needs to be removed from the US marketplace. I would love to see a class action against them and would gladly become a plaintiff.
