Our editor’s take

Anyone with a car who wants to skip going to a mechanic for the diagnostic step when its “check engine” light comes on can benefit from FIXD. It offers an affordable way to monitor your vehicle’s health and quickly learn about issues as they arise. While it can’t tell you everything that’s wrong with your vehicle, it still stands as one of the most comprehensive solutions for identifying issues with your vehicle.

How does FIXD work?

FIXD is an automobile diagnostic tool that connects to your vehicle to offer real-time insights into vehicle health. The FIXD sensor monitors your car’s systems and alerts you to any issues through its mobile application. Currently, FIXD is able to read and diagnose only check engine lights. Other lights like air bag, maintenance and stability control are not read.

Once an issue is identified, FIXD offers detailed explanations of the problem and estimated repair costs. A FIXD sensor is connected to your vehicle’s On-Board Diagnostic 2 (OBD2) port. OBD2 ports are typically located under the dashboard, beneath the steering wheel column. You can consult your vehicle owner’s manual for your port’s exact location. FIXD sensors are easy to install and work with all gas-powered cars and trucks built after 1996.

FIXD products

FIXD offers both a sensor and a mobile application to go with it:

FIXD Sensor

  • Plugs into your car’s OBD2 port
  • Provides real-time vehicle monitoring of mechanical issues
  • Works in all gas-powered cars and trucks built after 1996
  • Works in all diesel vehicles built after 2008

FIXD mobile application

  • Syncs with the FIXD sensor
  • Alerts you to vehicle and maintenance issues
  • Diagnoses check engine light
  • Free and subscription-based
  • Available for iPhones and Androids

FIXD Premium app subscription

  • FIXD mechanic hotline
  • Confirmed fix and cost
  • Issue forecast: predict future problems
  • Issue commonality
  • Emissions precheck: pretest before official smog testing

FIXD services

FIXD provides a comprehensive solution for car diagnostics and maintenance. The FIXD sensor connects to your car’s OBD2 port, then transmits data to the smartphone app. The app interprets check engine light and diagnostic codes, while providing detailed explanations of issues and solutions. It also offers estimated repair costs and a map of nearby repair shops.

In addition to vehicle health monitoring, FIXD tracks maintenance schedules. It alerts you to upcoming service needs. The FIXD app is free, with subscription based premium options.

Premium benefits include emissions precheck, issue forecast and a mechanic hotline. Emissions precheck looks for potential emissions issues before a smog test (if your state requires one). Additionally, issue forecasting predicts future issues or areas of concern. The goal of forecasting is to fix an issue before it becomes bigger and more costly.

How much does FIXD cost?

A fixed OBD2 sensor costs $59.99. The mobile application is free to download and has an additional cost for a premium subscription. The premium subscription is available for $8.99 per month or $69.99 per year.

On May 25, I saw the FIXD item advertised on the internet for $20. I thought for that price I would take a chance on it. The order site was a little confusing, but I authorized a charge using Apple Pay. Then, when I was able to find the right screen with a copy of the invoice, it was not for $20 but rather for $51!!! I IMMEDIATELY, within minutes, found the cancel order button, and I cancelled my order, including an explanation for the cancellation.

Just now, on June 8, I got an email from my Chase credit card, that they has a suspicious charge of $99.99 from FIXD Automotive Inc. They wanted to know if this suspicious charge was ok. Of course it is NOT ok. Chase will refuse the charge for me and issue me a new card. What a drag! You all know what a hassle it is when you have to change your credit card number. Buyer beware! Stay away from these scammers! Don't give them your credit card number! Who knows what corner of the Dark Net it will end up in.

I would rather rate this with zero than a one. Be careful buying the Fixd device. They trap you into buying the subscription at a cost of $99.99, then refuse to give you a refund if you fail to follow their very specific directions. There are other inexpensive similar devices that don't require a subscription, and provide far better customer service. Buyer beware. They will burn you.

FIXD is a subscription based service. You buy the hardware and then they still charge you yearly, whether you use it regularly or not. I cannot stress. This is enough. It was not worth the money by any stretch of the imagination and I don’t appreciate the $110 annual subscription renewing with minimal communication. They advertise their crap scanner so you purchase one then they lie lie lie about everything including the bogus subscription that I never authorized and then they will steal your money until there is no end. Idiots think that for whatever reason they can steal 99.99 per month. I tried with all my heart to end their robbery but they care nothing about how you believed them that the unit purchased was all you needed to invest in a scanner tool for your car. This company should be ashamed of their scamming tactics for a scanning tool for your car. If you let them they will rob you blind.

Only way out is to get your bank and fraud department involved. My bank is smart and deactivated the card they were stealing from on a monthly basis and they protect me from scum like FIXD. You want out let your bank deal with these morons. No matter how well a scan tool works it's never worth 99.99 each month and especially when you are not authorized that's called stealing. Stay as far as you can from this idiot company and tell everyone you know so they do not steal from them also.

In a flash the charge went through and I found that I was charged DOUBLE the price that I had agreed. to.
