Our editor’s take

Anyone with a car who wants to skip going to a mechanic for the diagnostic step when its “check engine” light comes on can benefit from FIXD. It offers an affordable way to monitor your vehicle’s health and quickly learn about issues as they arise. While it can’t tell you everything that’s wrong with your vehicle, it still stands as one of the most comprehensive solutions for identifying issues with your vehicle.

How does FIXD work?

FIXD is an automobile diagnostic tool that connects to your vehicle to offer real-time insights into vehicle health. The FIXD sensor monitors your car’s systems and alerts you to any issues through its mobile application. Currently, FIXD is able to read and diagnose only check engine lights. Other lights like air bag, maintenance and stability control are not read.

Once an issue is identified, FIXD offers detailed explanations of the problem and estimated repair costs. A FIXD sensor is connected to your vehicle’s On-Board Diagnostic 2 (OBD2) port. OBD2 ports are typically located under the dashboard, beneath the steering wheel column. You can consult your vehicle owner’s manual for your port’s exact location. FIXD sensors are easy to install and work with all gas-powered cars and trucks built after 1996.

FIXD services

FIXD provides a comprehensive solution for car diagnostics and maintenance. The FIXD sensor connects to your car’s OBD2 port, then transmits data to the smartphone app. The app interprets check engine light and diagnostic codes, while providing detailed explanations of issues and solutions. It also offers estimated repair costs and a map of nearby repair shops.

In addition to vehicle health monitoring, FIXD tracks maintenance schedules. It alerts you to upcoming service needs. The FIXD app is free, with subscription based premium options.

Premium benefits include emissions precheck, issue forecast and a mechanic hotline. Emissions precheck looks for potential emissions issues before a smog test (if your state requires one). Additionally, issue forecasting predicts future issues or areas of concern. The goal of forecasting is to fix an issue before it becomes bigger and more costly.

How much does FIXD cost?

A fixed OBD2 sensor costs $59.99. The mobile application is free to download and has an additional cost for a premium subscription. The premium subscription is available for $8.99 per month or $69.99 per year.

It doesn't read codes beyond a simple 29.00 scan. Furthermore, this company charges an annual fee of 106.59 as soon as you download the app to put it on your mobile phone, which they don't refund. And if you call the customer service number, you can never speak to a representative; it's not worth it.

I didn’t know until a week after setting up the app, FIXD tried to charge my card an additional $100. The ad only read FIXD for $20. I had only set the app up and never used the device, so that was a surprise but I fault myself for not diving deeper before purchasing.

I purchased the device and they automatically signed me up for a premium subscription. I never requested it and had sent them an email to make sure that they didn’t charge me. Apparently is just a scam. I sent them another email so we will see what happens.

Product/service probably has some value, however, the sales team should be fired of their tactics. Ordered the device directly from them and had no idea they would automatically charge my credit card for the premium service. Then try to cancel and it's a complete pain. Click cancel and you think you're good, nope, another "offer" to keep you from leaving that you must click through. 3 or 4 different offers before I could finally get a cancellation confirmation. Because of this ALONE I am not interested in EVER using your service.

Big time SCAM - unit is very hard to get to connect. Charged my credit card $109.74 for a Premium Membership without authorization. Trying to get a refund is nearly impossible. Don't buy this junk! Found it on a Facebook ad.

Beware!!!! They will charge your credit card even if you don’t use the scanner. I bought the scanner for my daughter and they charged my card an additional $107.00 after I already paid them $30 for the cost of the product.

I'm so glad I found this page. Thanks everyone for giving me the heads up on this scam. I had NO CLUE about the subscription cost. I got a real kick out of the advertisement on Youtube, which showed a mechanic rolling back the odometer. Lol Maybe in the 70's not now. Impossible.

Stay away. They charge you $99.99/year for subscription that you didn't know that exist. They gave a hard time to cancel my subscription. Don't buy it even if it is for free. Please see my attached order.
