My experience with Cargurus has been very good. They have helped me find what I’ve been looking for. My only issue has been the dealership or sellers haven’t been completely honest. I’ve purchased a 2016 Lincoln MKT and a 2017 Suburban, only to have to put thousands of dollars in each of them. When I say thousands, I’m talking $3-7 in each if not more. These cars need to be truly inspected by someone certified prior to be put up for sale on the website.
Thank you for your feedback and review. IS there anything we could of done to earn 5 stars?

I couldn’t drive the car I purchased for four weeks because the dealer didn’t send the car with a temporary tag. I called every day for weeks and couldn’t get anyone to help me. My salesperson completely ghosted me. I only got help after threatening legal action. Plus the car showed up with defects not listed on the original listing (only one key fob, broken right blinker, broken volume control button on the steering wheel, automatic trunk opening broken, piece from right door handle missing). It was extremely stressful and if CarGurus is willing to host dealers like that on their site then I will not use cargurus again. For reference, the dealer was Benji auto sales in Florida.
We do understand that an experience such as yours can be frustrating. We work closely with our dealerships to ensure that CarGurus listings are as accurate as possible; however, we ultimately rely on the dealers to provide us with information regarding their vehicles. Unfortunately, some dealers are less diligent than others. User feedback is important to us.

I do a lot of research when considering a big purchase like a new vehicle. I’ve used many sites and resources but CarGurus has become my go to site for information, inventory, calculators, and accuracy. I recently purchased a 2023 Honda Ridgeline from an out of state dealer for a super price. I would not have been aware of this opportunity if I wasn’t using The Guru. I have recommended Car Gurus on numerous occasions. Purchasing a vehicle without car gurus is not a chance I’m willing to take.

Seller was nice and I love my vehicle. But I received the vehicle with bad tires, service b needed, spark plugs and a few dings and scratches. Also paid out a lot but I’m fixing everything that’s wrong and hopefully I will have the car of my dreams. I hope no one else have a bad experience like me and I’m 65 years old.

This star rating is related to selling your car using Car Gurus. I had put in for an estimate thru Car Gurus, Carmax, Carvana, KBB, etc. Car Gurus had the highest offer by about $1,000. But when I took that offer to the dealership that was associated with it, they did not honor the price. In fact they insulted me by offer $4,000 less even though I had properly represented my vehicle. I reached out to two other dealerships that car gurus said had offered the same and it was the same deal- no one made good on their offer. Whereas Carvana, did end up giving me the full quoted price. I did call Car Gurus about this to complain and their customer support said the dealerships can price it how they want and there’s nothing they can do. So do not believe the offers you get from car gurus. It’s a bait and switch and a waste of time.

Looking at the car's history on CarGurus, it states that the car is a ONE OWNER. But the CarFax states it was a rental. This can be misleading. I even FILTERED NO FLEETS OR RENTALS. It still showed ONE OWNER. I will continue to research the history, this feels shady and dishonest to me.

I paid $4.95 twice to try and list my vehicle for sell. The 1st time I had my vehicle listed with photos and everything and I was asked to send a verification photo with a code on my car. So I printed the code in big letters and put on my windshield open my driver side door and took a picture as instructed. I would say an hour after sending the photo to CarGurus my listing for selling my vehicle was removed. So I tried again for the 2nd time and this time CarGurus just took my $4.95 again and now I cannot even list my vehicle or even make a full attempt to do so.
I contacted their support team and they are supposedly having some huge issues that they cannot resolve at the moment and I have to wait 48hrs to receive an email in regards to my refund process. This is unfair to us customers. We shouldn't have to wait 2 days or more to be able to even qualify for a refund especially if CarGurus is having a huge system issue with listing. This has to be handled much better than this and hopefully I get my $9.90 back or I'll have to seek legal actions.

I bought a 2018 Nissan Rogue from West Palm Beach Mitsubishi. I would’ve given them a one except for that it did get delivered the address to this particular Mitsubishi dealer that also deals and used vehicles that have been traded in is 2200 Okeechobee Boulevard in West Palm Beach, Florida. The vehicle was promised to me with a full tank of gas, completely detailed so that it would look and smell as close to a new car as possible. I explained to my sales person that I have an asthma conditions set off by cigarette smoke. When a car arrived it was very cold, so the smell was not so that I could even detect it, or my asthma did when it warmed up my vehicle STINKS TO HIGH HEAVEN OF CIGARETTE SMOKE which set off my asthma bad I had to take several puffs off of my rescue inhaler. The floors and the glove box and every place that dirt and sand could settle are filthy. I have to take it down and get it detailed myself.
Please keep in mind that it was promised to me that it would be completely detailed, and that it would have a full tank of gas. It had less than an eighth of a tank of gas. I was promised two key fobs. I was given one. This vehicle I paid for in cash just under $16,000 now that may sound like a pretty cheap car to some of you but that’s an expensive car for someone who is on disability and lives from one to the next… The vehicle that I had before this one was totaled, so I had the money in hand to pay for this vehicle, it was the only way that I would’ve been able to buy something like that with cash.
Not only is there damage on the inside there is also external damage that I was not told about. A large chunk of the bumper in the back is missing… There are several dings and dents and pretty long and old scratches that should have been taken care of before it was ever sent out to me. Vehicle is black, so it is very noticeable. When I called my sales person about it they then tried to tell me that I still owed over $500 on this vehicle, but that they were going to be kind enough to go ahead and send me the title anyway for as long as it took them to get my vehicle to me. I had paid for it in full a month before… yes I said a month before!
I have bought from Carvana before which is where my last vehicle came from by me trading in another vehicle so that I could have a free and clear title and no car payment. I got a wonderful vehicle and thought that I would have the same kind of experience with CarGurus, because Carvana did not have the vehicle that I wanted. I cannot believe that they actually get away with this crap!
If you’re looking for a new vehicle or a new vehicle, do not, I repeat DO NOT go to West Palm Beach Mitsubishi it is definitely not where you want to buy from. I was told at first that each one of their sales people is on a salary so it makes no difference what vehicle or how many vehicles they sell they do get a bonus for each one that they sell, but they do get a steady paycheck even if they do not sell anything. I’m sure if they sell nothing they don’t keep their job but the point is it is not like the sales person had to make their commission off of selling me this vehicle.
I found out that that is not true that they have to sell as many vehicles as they can to get a good paycheck , or they get no paycheck at all. So again, please do not buy from these people. If you’re going to buy something from Car Gurus, buy it from somewhere else I’m not even sure ever buy from them again because they obviously do not do a whole lot of research into who they are recommending for sales. If you’re going to buy off-line, then go with Carvana.

So it started with Kamal being oh so kind and making empty promises. I saw this car under my insurance company’s website under used cars. Me thinking everything is on the up and up, I sent 10,000.00 for a car that he said was in great condition including the interior. (2005 Mercedes Convertible) Now I had a 2006 BMW and on his word I sold my car and purchased a headache. I have ridden in the car all of 5 times since the purchase in January, it is now the end of March. I just got it out the shop on my own dime.
First never purchase a car sight unseen!! I was told to send the money and they would ship it same day..lies. Once they had my money in their hand it was all downhill. I ended up having to put the car in the shop, due to false information that the car was in excellent condition and garage kept. I reported them to my insurance company and had them removed from my agent's sight. I am putting this out here because not only did Kamal tell me he would fix whatever was wrong, he then tried to get me to not write a review for 100.00. Seriously, I had just spent 10,000.00 cash. Please be aware of this company. They are a bunch of scammers and could care less about you, they only want your money! Please buyer beware!! If you have over 5,000.00 to put on a car, take my advice and go elsewhere.

I used the Sell My Car option on Car Gurus to get “offers” for my car. The process was quick and efficient with a recommended dealer top offer. There were four dealers offers, with three being the exact same low offer from dealers listed as having lower ratings. The recommended offer was a higher dollar amount from a 5-star dealer.
I was very pleased the recommended dealership called me immediately. I had only entertained the “offer” given the dollar amount indicated in the confirmation email from CarGurus, but expected that the offer was a scam as it was a little higher than I expected based on KBB. The main question for anyone looking to use the CarGurus sell-my-car system is whether the supposed “offer” means anything at all. Of course, there is negotiation and potential edits based on dealer inspection of the car. In my case the car was better than I had indicated (arguably “great” rather than merely “good”), and the dealer had no line item issues to justify ignoring the CarGurus email. The dealer simply said regarding the offer “that is them (CarGurus), not us.”
I get that there is an algorithm involved, but to have the confirmation email as the basis of a starting price and then to have the dealer merely say the number means nothing when they have no issues with the car is more than a little disingenuous. At first glance, the CarGurus system seems great as it supposedly brings together competing options, but the value evaporates if the seller doesn’t really know if the “best” offer is the best at all.
I could have stomached the dealer’s lowball if they had started with the “offer” total and then tried to walk down the number by arguing tire tread wear or bumper scuff, etc., but they had nothing. Just an effective admission that the confirmation email of an offer was a scam. The total they offered was actually lower than the other supposed offers. I would have not even wasted my time if they had been honest upfront. Is the bad-guy really the dealership rather than CarGurus? To that point I would suggest the dealership has a paid relationship with CarGurus and CarGurus steered me to them. I am not a victim. I had options for selling my car. I just want people to know the process is not as advertised.

There's a reason Carvana scores higher on Consumer Affairs than CarGurus... they're just better in every aspect of selling a car. Cargurus practice is that they'll make you the most competitive offer, then at the last limit they'll reduce it by several thousand dollars on the hope that you've come this far so you'll just accept an offer that's way less than anywhere else. Just stick with Carvana's, it's a better and more honest experience in my opinion.

They offer a pre-qualification application to make the process easier. They "pre-qualified" me with Westlake Financial. Started showing me cars I qualified for, and sending me an overwhelming amount of text and emails about vehicles I could purchase. I reached out to a few dealers and made offers through the site. After 5 days with no response, I contacted a dealer who never received my initial offering. I noticed on the website that all of my offers were missing, but the "pre-qualification" was still showing a list of other cars I could purchase.
I called Westlake who finally told me "yeah, your credit score is too bad, so they just blocked your messages. I would suggest you just go find a dealer and try to get financed there." I said so there's no pre-approval. He said "no they were never going to approve you"... so I was lied to and jerked around by Westlake, and yes they are to blame for their own bad behavior, But it was Cargurus.com that I came to in search of a car. It was cargurus.com that continues to message me. It was Cargurus.com that took my application and linked me to Westlake. The whole entire process is nothing but a dis-honest lead generation too for an industry that has proven itself to have no ethical boundaries.

I ran into an issue with a dealership who kept stating "the online price" that I thought was the price I saw on CarGurus. The guy at the dealership treated me like I was an idiot. Turns out the "online price" was actually what I saw PLUS $1,000 if I didn't need financing. PLUS another $1,000 if I didn't have a trade-in. Every consumer has the responsibility to research additional fees and costs. However, I think this is a practice CarGurus needs to take some responsibility for. The ratings they provide are based on the large number everyone looks and possibly sorts by. Perhaps make advertised price a range (i.e. $15,999 - $17,999) or add a filter that will show true price with/without financing or trade ins.

To sum it up, you are better off purchasing from an owner directly and saving money. Cargurus is just a posting site. There is no verification of car status or vetting of dealership for cars at dealer. You get what they tell you, you are getting, not what you actually get. I purchased a toyota 4 runner from Rocky Mountain Eurosport. I was told vehicle had no damage and was in great shape. I thought that Cargurus were similiar to Carvana, but I was confused. I presumed they vetted cars and dealers and that buying through them and through a dealer would assure me that car would be as described. WRONG. Took forever to purchase car from dealer.
Salesman answered my direct question of is there any damage or imperfections with an affirmative "NO". Car arrived: hood misaligned & rattles, driver front end: all panels misaligned, fender glued-on, yes glued, door buckling from being stuck on quarter panel, multiple pieces not attached at all, headlight full of water and leaking, grill guard not attached, large space between panels by door, engine cover not attached. 1 key fob, which was beat-up (usually states if only one). Carvana details every imperfection. Also this car had a glued-on mirror (or some film, I cannot get off mirror), multiple scratches, and several paint chips. Car was dirty: greasy handprints, blonde hairs, water stains on roof, something which looked like spilled milk.
Called cargurus-"We have nothing to do with that, contact the dealer." I said I tried calling and the phone does not even go through. Asked for an email and they gave me the phone number again. Bottom line-how can you buy a car virtually if there is no guarantee it is as described. Basically, you cargurus is like Craigslist and even facebook marketplace allows you to contest the purchase if not as described. Cargurus is just a posting site and if you have a problem, it is your problem. It is like buying a diamond and getting a cubic zirconia-oh well your problem. If the risk of buying a car is the same here as it is in buying from an individual why not just buy from an individual. I don't understand how a dealership can misrepresent the condition of a car and it is still on this site.
BEWARE! Don't waste your time here, unless you can go check out the car. Also the "great deal" they post is not accurate. My car is damaged. It is not a great deal for a car, which has been in an unreported accident. Rocky Mountain Eurosport also told me car was being inspected and serviced so everything was perfect-maybe they should have reattached the panels? They also tried to upsell me on a $1,999.00 package for tinting, clearcoat bra & windshield protection. When I declined, they did it anyway and then tried to charge me. Thanks for clearcoating over the paint chips and all the front panels that don't fit together. Car also started beeping when I washed it upon arrival? Obviously in an unreported collision and now I am stuck with a car not as described and Cargurus will not help whatsoever. GO ELSEWHERE.

Therefore, they ask us to make an appointment to come and view the vehicle. We did agree made a time And went to see the vehicle. When we arrived, we went into the show room and spoke to the lady there that we had spoken to over the phone. She went in the back to talk to someone I assume it was Jeffrey her supervisor. She returned, advised us that they had blown the engine on the vehicle, and it was taken back to the auction. Oh by the way, we are just driven an hour and a half to see a vehicle that they had did not have the courtesy to call and let us know was no longer available. At that point she continued by saying that, "Oh we do have another jeep that’s available that we could show you. But this one is 10,000 more than the vehicle that you were looking for for."
I certainly would not suggest anyone considering a vehicle from them just go to the lot and look for yourself if you are really interested in dealing with these people. As far we are concerned, this was this was a bait and switch situation. They haven’t called us and ask us if we were still coming to laugh. At that point they could’ve let us know that the vehicle head blown up its engine and we shouldn’t waste our time. They called us to see if we were coming to see it. Never Said any about the motor, no, they waited till we got there so they could do their bait and switch.!! I hope that they can sleep well tonight because I will. Great website. Put in all the data on my perfect 2023 Kia with 4,000 miles, uploaded docs. Got a decent offer and accepted it. A few days later CarGurus asked for title and registration etc. Uploaded. A few days later a mechanic scheduled a drive at my home. But before the mechanic inspected the car, CarGurus texted me with well dealer backed out our back up deal is $4,500 less. Is that good? Why would I have mess with them again? Lesson Learned.

Recently wanted to sell my vehicle, most places provided a crappy offer up front, basically telling us "If you want us to buy your car we'll pay you this amount, BEND OVER." But not CarGurus, they have a special way of telling you to BEND OVER. They offer you just a bit more than the competition, then a few days before your sale they send out an inspector who no matter what finds things or reasons to devalue your vehicle. So after being strung along for 3 plus weeks, and you're ready to make a deal, they pull the rug out from under you and attempt to steal your vehicle for a thousands less than what they originally offered. These people are scum, do yourself a favor and find a dealership desperate for some used cars, this will be your best bet for a decent price. Stay away from ripoffs like CarGurus, and you won't be forced to BEND OVER. Good luck.

They deliberately value cars posted from dealerships higher than those of private sellers most likely to spawn more business through those dealerships or is there a kickback? It SHOULD be investigated. A price on a car between a private seller and a dealership should not be that different in price and USUALLY, a car posted from a dealership should be higher priced than a private seller, but CarGurus flips the deals so that it benefits the dealership. It will look like you are getting a "Good Deal" through the dealership, but if you post the exact same car from a private seller (as I did), it will show it as "overpriced" for the same exact car. This to me is criminal.
Case in point: I posted my car (2015 Porsche Cayman GTS with 7-Spd PDK and PTV, Bose stereo, Premium Package Plus, 30,765 miles, 3 owners (including myself), no accidents). I currently have it for sale for $69,500.00 in which they are saying it is $7,833.00 above market price at that price. Two other cars on CarGurus (both from dealerships) (both 2015 Porsche Cayman GTSs) with lesser options in both cases, one with 35,826 miles/4 owners/no accidents, the other 79,521 miles/5 owners/1 accident, the first one priced higher than mine at $70,247.00 and showing $2,562.00 below market, the other $61,873.00 and showing $3,012.00 below market. The value they have placed on my car is $61,667.00 compared to the 5-owner car/48,756 MORE miles/with 1 accident at $64,885.00.
Basically, what I have learned this last week (after 7 phone calls with CarGurus and one verifying the real value of my car with AutoCheck) is that CarGurus will deliberately value the cars placed on their site by dealerships higher than those placed by private sellers, either to help dealerships sell their cars, get more business through them, or maybe they are receiving a kickback of some sort in doing so? To deliberately lessen the value of one car from a private seller while deliberately raising the value of the same car at a dealership for increased business activity of whatever sort, is criminal and should be investigated by the powers at be. (All of these cars are currently posted on CarGurus as of September 18th, 2023. You can actually see it and do the math for yourself).

I got offers from several companies on selling my used car. CarGurus was the highest so I went with them. The car was in very good condition, although I chose the middle category when asking for a quote. (Not excellent, just good). I got a reasonable price, knowing they had to sell it for a profit after their expenses. Two days before the pickup, they said the mechanical inspection showed 'undisclosed' damage so they had to reduce the price. One of the bits of undisclosed damage was poor tires. The tires were in good condition, at least 20K more miles on them. The other one was curb rash on a wheel. Both of these should have fallen under the 'good' condition category which drove my original offer. It looked like they were trying to find something wrong with it so they could reduce the price. That was a classic bait-and-switch and have a bad taste in my mouth from the transaction. To their credit, the process was smooth and relatively easy.

The vehicle was being sold for $39,000 and stated the value was $40,000.
However, doing a little research by using some of the links on the ad itself (CARFAX and Car Value) I did a little research of my own. It turned out the vehicle was in an accident with according to Carfax it had "moderate" damage. Using the ad supplied VIN and the Carfax information I then attempted to find the vehicle price. According to Edmunds, this vehicle was between $15,000 and $16,000. That doesn't seem to be a very "Great Deal". CarGurus offered me a great price so I decided to proceed with the sale. I was told to expect a FedEx package with some required documents that would be necessary for the sale. This package never came and I was forced to reschedule my first attempt at the vehicle pickup. When the package came a day before the second scheduled attempt, all it contained was a checklist for me to give to the driver to fill out and instructions on signing the title. No actual documents to sign. The day of the rescheduled appointment, no one ever came and never called. I was on hold with customer service for nearly an hour before they figured out a driver was never assigned to come pick up my car.
Had I not reached out I never would have known that. After being told that and being apologized to profusely for the issue, I got verbal and written guarantee that a driver was already assigned to come get my car for the NEXT rescheduled attempt (today 1/4/22). The next appointment comes and goes, and after waiting a few extra hours I called yet again and was on hold so long the rep helping me said he would have the transport team personally reach out to me this afternoon and figure it out. I waited several more hours after that and after still not hearing anything I reached out AGAIN.
After being on hold while the rep tried to reach out to the transport team my call was simply disconnected. Every person I actually spoke with was very polite and helpful but that is where the positives end for my experience. First and foremost, I couldn't access any messages from interested buyers in my truck on the site. Rather than send me an email like Cars.com, CarGurus forces people to use their messaging system and I could never access anything. I contacted customer service about this many, many times and eventually asked for a refund on my ad many, many times, but they refused. I ended the listing as it was useless. Cars.com and Craigslist produced more leads for me. Most of the messages I got about my car was just a message saying someone was interested in my car. Who cares! What a waste of time.
A minor issue I had was that I couldn't have two vehicles listed in 2 locations. Once I put my car in storage for the winter, it was in a different zip code as my truck. I wanted to reflect this in the ads so buyers knew how far they'd have to drive to see the vehicles. Once I changed the zip code for one listing, it was automatically changed for the other as well. I again contacted customer service and there was nothing they could do about. Such a simple little thing in the code to make the site more user friendly and they won't do it. I also received a text from the seller (this all goes through the CarGurus' website) asking if I had received his message and to click on the link to see it, this link told me to log in to my account to see the message. Once I logged in I was told that there were no messages (what a surprise). While this went on for over a week I continued to search for vehicles on internet and dealer websites. Fortunately I found the vehicle I was looking for along with excellent communications between the site, seller, and myself. Was my experience because the vehicle was being sold by a private seller and CarGurus is concerned about that seller stiffing them for the $99 fee? Seems very likely.

CarGurus gives small dealerships the impression that they will create tons of customer leads for them when in actuality they only create a additional bill for that small business. Our small business was lured into a contract with them with promises of great customer turnover. CarGurus created no additional foot traffic or generated no phone calls or inquiries about our inventory. We were locked into a contract that we could not get out of and there was no adjustment to the pricing. We called to cancel the services and were told that there would be no cancelation until the end of the terms and even when the terms were done you still had to cancel at least 30 days out, or you would be billed for services for the next month.
We spoke to a representative named Kevin ** who was by far not the nicest individual at all. We explained that companies like CarGurus were helping to put small businesses out of business during these times of Covid 19 by locking small companies in to contracts and charging them for services that were not producing any results. Franchise Dealers may be able to afford these monstrous rates but our small independent dealership certainly could not afford it. He simply responded snidely "read your contract buddy, don't give me that." I then at that point asked to speak to a supervisor, which at that time he said there was none. I am simply trying to keep the doors to our business open during these tough times, and am only looking for a small sense of humanity from this Gigantic corporation called CarGurus.

CarGurus is basically a vehicle locator/advertiser. They provide the basic info, location, etc. I purchased a (new) 7 month old Mercedes from a dealer with 5,000 miles. Dealer said it had been an "executive demonstrator". Later found out it had been a leased vehicle and a loaner. It had been damaged and repaired by the dealer. This type of info is not available to CarGurus if the dealer doesn't disclose it. Just something to be aware of.

The site itself is well designed and easy to navigate, the problem I have is the pricing guide off to the side, telling the potential purchaser that it’s a great, good, fair or poor deal Price wise. This lulls the potential buyer into a false sense of the car's price so they won’t go to KBB or nada to accurately price the car, furthermore the price guide is wildly inaccurate being off by 2-3k or more. I have bought 3 cars and sold 2 cars here. I most recently used their autopay system (when I sold my car) where CarGurus handled everything concerning the buying process. No concerns about fake cashier's checks or scams - they take care of checking the title, acting as the go-between with the money, paying off the lien (if there is one), and providing $75,000 worth of coverage (should anything go wrong). It went seamlessly and I'd do it again in a heartbeat. And all of that is included in the $29.95 price to sell your car. That also includes a FedEx prepaid label (if needed, and my buyer was out-of-state) to send the title and bill of sale to the buyer. I've bought 2 cars from dealers using CarGurus, one was 400 miles away and the other was 60 miles away. Cars listed on here get great visibility too. I had a hard-to-find car (the one I just sold), and had 3 serious inquiries within an hour of my listing, and one of them ended up being the buyer.

Overall I like the concept of CarGurus. I do use it to do nationwide searches on vehicles. The problem with CarGurus is they allow the dealers to advertise false prices to try to get you in the door. In most industries this practice is illegal but in the car business it is the norm. CarGurus has the choice to really separate itself from other sites like auto AutoTrader by forcing dealers to list the true out the door price but they seem to not care.
Here is an example of the problem: Let's say you live in an area with multiple dealers in multiple states that are within 100 miles of you. You know what car, options, etc you want so you start a search. The results show the supposed price and you start making some inquiries or phone calls. What you quickly find out is that the price doesn't include a dealer doc fee or a dealer prep fee. There are some honest dealers out there that do not charge either of these bogus fees, but a majority do. Unfortunately they are not disclosed until the fine print at closing when you notice the purchase price is not the agreed upon price.
The highest fee I have been quoted when I have asked about any extra fees involved is $1,400. The most deceptive part is I will phrase a question to the dealer as follows: "If we agree on a price, are there any other fees involved with the transaction." They usually respond with something like tax, title, and licensing which are standard legit expenses. I then respond, "With other than government required fees is there anything else?" The answer is usually no. I then say, "Do you have a document or vehicle prep fee?" Now the backstepping starts and they then admit that there will be an additional cost at closing for prep and doc fees. Again, CarGurus chooses to allow the dealers to continue this deceptive practice. They could stop it overnight if they chose to. They could even make an advertising campaign out of it that consumers can have guaranteed pricing, but they don't. Really a shame.
