I was trying to sell a vehicle through CarGurus but the two individuals who reached out to me from companies that they partner with shot way below the market value of the vehicle. They were apparently sending it to auction and they needed to maximize their profit over what it was actually valued at. I get it but at the same time, I know what the vehicle is valued at. So, I didn’t even sell through CarGurus. But their platform is perfectly fine and I had no issues with that. In fact, I liked their platform better than CARFAX, especially when using their app and website because there are a lot more filters that you can use compared to CARFAX.
Thank you so much for the kind and encouraging words!

Cargurus does nothing to help consumer buying vehicles on their platform if they have an issue with dealer. Elite Auto Group Chicago never sent me title for vehicle. CarGurus didn't step in. They said I am on my own. Bought rust bucket place in Chicago. Didn't tell me when asked if it had rust before purchased. Seller said no significant rust.

It was the best offer I got from anybody.

CarGurus would not post my review on Van Hyundai e., even though everything that I stated was true. I also posted several documents of proof. I guess it makes sense, after all Cargurus and the dealers that advertise on its site are business partners. Not allowing me to share my true experience with a dealer makes Cargurus a very misleading site to search on. This is a grave disservice to the retail consumer. Will not recommend using this site.

The dealership name is XRIDE. I purchased a car from them via Car Gurus. When I picked up the car there was a check engine light on and the AC didn't blow cold. They called me back and told me they had corrected the repairs. The check engine light was off and the AC was blowing cold so I took delivery of the car. Within an hour of driving, my check engine light was on and the air was blowing hot. All they did was put a can of freon in a leaking system and they cleared the code. They lied to me about fixing. Now all they tell me is AS IS NO WARRANTY.
I tried to pay to get the AC repaired. It would cost $2400 to fix the AC because this used engine came out of a crashed car and the compressor and condenser. The motor is shot as well. XRIDE and Car Gurus have done nothing to correct this. Horrible and expensive lesson. Car Gurus should screen the dealerships better. These people are crooks. They should have told me the engine was not original.

UNSCRUPULOUS, SCAMMERS, FRAUDULENT BUSINESS PRACTICES.... To say the experience was bad is an understatement. I am pursuing legal action with the District Attorney and the DMV (licensing agent for dealerships). You would think that paying for a vehicle in cash would be a simple transaction, but I was sold a car that was not suitable for sale. After the 1st week, I was advised to go to their sister-dealership for service and almost 4 weeks later the car was returned to me after major work was done (engine mounts, transmission mounts, etc).... And that was only completed because I bought the $5k warranty.
There was no regard for the inconvenience, the multiple trips to/from both dealerships, calls and messages went unreturned and even some issues were denied by the warranty. The GM, Sean NEVER addressed the matter in writing (via email/text), call or in-person after me sitting waiting for him for nearly an hour. Other unprincipled employees that I continued being passed to were Belash, Payton, Smitty, Elaine, Lesandro.... All were informed but did nothing but pass the buck and lie. I intend on taking this as far legally as possible, so others won't be scammed and deceived.

We truly appreciate the feedback. It's possible that the dealer wished to resubmit with you in store to make sure there was no inaccurate or mis-entered information that was preventing an approval. I received an $12k offer for my car through CarGurus via a dealership. I did notice some minor sidewalk damage to the hubcaps and minor scuffing on the clear coat layer after requesting the quote, so I came in expecting that the offer would be lowered a bit as a result, somewhere in the $10k-$12k range, which is where the rest of my offers landed. I was surprised the final offer was in the $8k-$9k range, let them know my lowest offer was for $10k, and asked if this level of deviation from the CarGurus price was normal and was told everyone will do it to me because of the cost of repairing the scuffs, which seemed fair - it is something they have to repair, and perhaps that cost is greater for them.
I then drove the hour back to my house, where I got a quote from Carvana, including disclosing the small bits of damage we found, and even after paying the delivery fee for them to come pick it up, I’ll still be getting over $10k for the car without having to leave my driveway. I’ve sold to Carvana before and had a great experience, but thought I’d try something different this time due to the high offer. Salesperson was great and upfront, and the overall customer service was good and communication through CarGurus was quick and painless.
Bit of a mixed bag experience, probably would have been a bit better for a trade in where they might have had more wiggle room. For selling for cash, I would recommend cutting the offer for this dealership by 25%-33% if you find you have any minor scuffs or scrapes that could affect the offer, and using that as your guide for whether it’s worth the trip out. I think if I had that expectation to start, it would have saved me a trip. My bad for not clarifying and calling ahead as soon as I noticed the light scuff, though I will note that the whole conversation started by looking for the fine print on the email that says the offer is contingent on condition, which - when someone starts the conversation that way before looking at the car or asking if there’s anything not disclosed, you get a sense you’re in for a lowball offer. No big, friendly folks, but wouldn’t make the drive out again knowing this.

Once I followed their directions they continued to say those instructions are invalid and attempted multiple times to have my account verified. They randomly shut my account down and was unable to get in touch with the seller. Now they have caused problems for both the buyer and seller trying to make a transaction. This star rating is related to selling your car using Car Gurus. I had put in for an estimate thru Car Gurus, Carmax, Carvana, KBB, etc. Car Gurus had the highest offer by about $1,000. But when I took that offer to the dealership that was associated with it, they did not honor the price. In fact they insulted me by offer $4,000 less even though I had properly represented my vehicle. I reached out to two other dealerships that car gurus said had offered the same and it was the same deal- no one made good on their offer. Whereas Carvana, did end up giving me the full quoted price. I did call Car Gurus about this to complain and their customer support said the dealerships can price it how they want and there’s nothing they can do. I would say an hour after sending the photo to CarGurus my listing for selling my vehicle was removed. So I tried again for the 2nd time and this time CarGurus just took my $4.95 again and now I cannot even list my vehicle or even make a full attempt to do so.
I contacted their support team and they are supposedly having some huge issues that they cannot resolve at the moment and I have to wait 48hrs to receive an email in regards to my refund process. This is unfair to us customers. We shouldn't have to wait 2 days or more to be able to even qualify for a refund especially if CarGurus is having a huge system issue with listing. This has to be handled much better than this and hopefully I get my $9.90 back or I'll have to seek legal actions.

I would’ve given them a one except for that it did get delivered the address to this particular Mitsubishi dealer that also deals and used vehicles that have been traded in is 2200 Okeechobee Boulevard in West Palm Beach, Florida. The vehicle was promised to me with a full tank of gas, completely detailed so that it would look and smell as close to a new car as possible. I explained to my sales person that I have an asthma conditions set off by cigarette smoke. When a car arrived it was very cold, so the smell was not so that I could even detect it, or my asthma did when it warmed up my vehicle STINKS TO HIGH HEAVEN OF CIGARETTE SMOKE which set off my asthma bad I had to take several puffs off of my rescue inhaler. The floors and the glove box and every place that dirt and sand could settle are filthy. I have to take it down and get it detailed myself.
Please keep in mind that it was promised to me that it would be completely detailed, and that it would have a full tank of gas. It had less than an eighth of a tank of gas. I was promised two key fobs. I was given one. This vehicle I paid for in cash just under $16,000 now that may sound like a pretty cheap car to some of you but that’s an expensive car for someone who is on disability and lives from one to the next… The vehicle that I had before this one was totaled, so I had the money in hand to pay for this vehicle, it was the only way that I would’ve been able to buy something like that with cash.
Not only is there damage on the inside there is also external damage that I was not told about. A large chunk of the bumper in the back is missing… There are several dings and dents and pretty long and old scratches that should have been taken care of before it was ever sent out to me. Vehicle is black, so it is very noticeable. When I called my sales person about it they then tried to tell me that I still owed over $500 on this vehicle, but that they were going to be kind enough to go ahead and send me the title anyway for as long as it took them to get my vehicle to me. I had paid for it in full a month before… yes I said a month before!
I have bought from Carvana before which is where my last vehicle came from by me trading in another vehicle so that I could have a free and clear title and no car payment. I got a wonderful vehicle and thought that I would have the same kind of experience with CarGurus, because Carvana did not have the vehicle that I wanted. I cannot believe that they actually get away with this crap!
If you’re looking for a new vehicle or a new vehicle, do not, I repeat DO NOT go to West Palm Beach Mitsubishi it is definitely not where you want to buy from. I was told at first that each one of their sales people is on a salary so it makes no difference what vehicle or how many vehicles they sell they do get a bonus for each one that they sell, but they do get a steady paycheck even if they do not sell anything. I’m sure if they sell nothing they don’t keep their job but the point is it is not like the sales person had to make their commission off of selling me this vehicle.
I found out that that is not true that they have to sell as many vehicles as they can to get a good paycheck , or they get no paycheck at all. So again, please do not buy from these people. If you’re going to buy something from Car Gurus, buy it from somewhere else I’m not even sure ever buy from them again because they obviously do not do a whole lot of research into who they are recommending for sales. If you’re going to buy off-line, then go with Carvana.

So it started with Kamal being oh so kind and making empty promises. I saw this car under my insurance company’s website under used cars. Me thinking everything is on the up and up, I sent 10,000.00 for a car that he said was in great condition including the interior. (2005 Mercedes Convertible) Now I had a 2006 BMW and on his word I sold my car and purchased a headache. I have ridden in the car all of 5 times since the purchase in January, it is now the end of March. I just got it out the shop on my own dime.
First never purchase a car sight unseen!! I was told to send the money and they would ship it same day..lies. Once they had my money in their hand it was all downhill. I ended up having to put the car in the shop, due to false information that the car was in excellent condition and garage kept. I reported them to my insurance company and had them removed from my agent's sight. I am putting this out here because not only did Kamal tell me he would fix whatever was wrong, he then tried to get me to not write a review for 100.00. Seriously, I had just spent 10,000.00 cash. Please be aware of this company. They are a bunch of scammers and could care less about you, they only want your money! Please buyer beware!! I used the Sell My Car option on Car Gurus to get “offers” for my car. The process was quick and efficient with a recommended dealer top offer. There were four dealers offers, with three being the exact same low offer from dealers listed as having lower ratings. The recommended offer was a higher dollar amount from a 5-star dealer.
I was very pleased the recommended dealership called me immediately. I had only entertained the “offer” given the dollar amount indicated in the confirmation email from CarGurus, but expected that the offer was a scam as it was a little higher than I expected based on KBB. The main question for anyone looking to use the CarGurus sell-my-car system is whether the supposed “offer” means anything at all. Of course, there is negotiation and potential edits based on dealer inspection of the car. In my case the car was better than I had indicated (arguably “great” rather than merely “good”), and the dealer had no line item issues to justify ignoring the CarGurus email. The dealer simply said regarding the offer “that is them (CarGurus), not us.”
I get that there is an algorithm involved, but to have the confirmation email as the basis of a starting price and then to have the dealer merely say the number means nothing when they have no issues with the car is more than a little disingenuous. At first glance, the CarGurus system seems great as it supposedly brings together competing options, but the value evaporates if the seller doesn’t really know if the “best” offer is the best at all.
I could have stomached the dealer’s lowball if they had started with the “offer” total and then tried to walk down the number by arguing tire tread wear or bumper scuff, etc., but they had nothing. Just an effective admission that the confirmation email of an offer was a scam. The total they offered was actually lower than the other supposed offers. I would have not even wasted my time if they had been honest upfront. Is the bad-guy really the dealership rather than CarGurus? To that point I would suggest the dealership has a paid relationship with CarGurus and CarGurus steered me to them. I am not a victim. I had options for selling my car. I just want people to know the process is not as advertised.

There's a reason Carvana scores higher on Consumer Affairs than CarGurus... they're just better in every aspect of selling a car. Cargurus practice is that they'll make you the most competitive offer, then at the last limit they'll reduce it by several thousand dollars on the hope that you've come this far so you'll just accept an offer that's way less than anywhere else. Just stick with Carvana's, it's a better and more honest experience in my opinion.

They offer a pre-qualification application to make the process easier. They "pre-qualified" me with Westlake Financial. Started showing me cars I qualified for, and sending me an overwhelming amount of text and emails about vehicles I could purchase. I reached out to a few dealers and made offers through the site. After 5 days with no response, I contacted a dealer who never received my initial offering. I noticed on the website that all of my offers were missing, but the "pre-qualification" was still showing a list of other cars I could purchase.
I called Westlake who finally told me "yeah, your credit score is too bad, so they just blocked your messages. I would suggest you just go find a dealer and try to get financed there." I said so there's no pre-approval. He said "no they were never going to approve you"... so I was lied to and jerked around by Westlake, and yes they are to blame for their own bad behavior, But it was Cargurus.com that I came to in search of a car. It was cargurus.com that continues to message me. It was Cargurus.com that took my application and linked me to Westlake. The whole entire process is nothing but a dis-honest lead generation too for an industry that has proven itself to have no ethical boundaries.

I ran into an issue with a dealership who kept stating "the online price" that I thought was the price I saw on CarGurus. The guy at the dealership treated me like I was an idiot. Turns out the "online price" was actually what I saw PLUS $1,000 if I didn't need financing. PLUS another $1,000 if I didn't have a trade-in. Every consumer has the responsibility to research additional fees and costs. However, I think this is a practice CarGurus needs to take some responsibility for. The ratings they provide are based on the large number everyone looks and possibly sorts by. Perhaps make advertised price a range (i.e. $15,999 - $17,999) or add a filter that will show true price with/without financing or trade ins.

To sum it up, you are better off purchasing from an owner directly and saving money. Cargurus is just a posting site. There is no verification of car status or vetting of dealership for cars at dealer. You get what they tell you, you are getting, not what you actually get. I purchased a toyota 4 runner from Rocky Mountain Eurosport. I was told vehicle had no damage and was in great shape. I thought that Cargurus were similiar to Carvana, but I was confused. I presumed they vetted cars and dealers and that buying through them and through a dealer would assure me that car would be as described. WRONG. Took forever to purchase car from dealer.
Salesman answered my direct question of is there any damage or imperfections with an affirmative "NO". Car arrived: hood misaligned & rattles, driver front end: all panels misaligned, fender glued-on, yes glued, door buckling from being stuck on quarter panel, multiple pieces not attached at all, headlight full of water and leaking, grill guard not attached, large space between panels by door, engine cover not attached. 1 key fob, which was beat-up (usually states if only one). Carvana details every imperfection. Also this car had a glued-on mirror (or some film, I cannot get off mirror), multiple scratches, and several paint chips. Car was dirty: greasy handprints, blonde hairs, water stains on roof, something which looked like spilled milk.
Called cargurus-"We have nothing to do with that, contact the dealer." I said I tried calling and the phone does not even go through. Asked for an email and they gave me the phone number again. Bottom line-how can you buy a car virtually if there is no guarantee it is as described. Basically, you cargurus is like Craigslist and even facebook marketplace allows you to contest the purchase if not as described. Cargurus is just a posting site and if you have a problem, it is your problem. It is like buying a diamond and getting a cubic zirconia-oh well your problem. If the risk of buying a car is the same here as it is in buying from an individual why not just buy from an individual. I don't understand how a dealership can misrepresent the condition of a car and it is still on this site.
BEWARE! Don't waste your time here, unless you can go check out the car. Also the "great deal" they post is not accurate. My car is damaged. It is not a great deal for a car, which has been in an unreported accident. Rocky Mountain Eurosport also told me car was being inspected and serviced so everything was perfect-maybe they should have reattached the panels? They also tried to upsell me on a $1,999.00 package for tinting, clearcoat bra & windshield protection. When I declined, they did it anyway and then tried to charge me. Thanks for clearcoating over the paint chips and all the front panels that don't fit together. Car also started beeping when I washed it upon arrival? Obviously in an unreported collision and now I am stuck with a car not as described and Cargurus will not help whatsoever. GO ELSEWHERE.

Therefore, they ask us to make an appointment to come and view the vehicle. We did agree made a time And went to see the vehicle. When we arrived, we went into the show room and spoke to the lady there that we had spoken to over the phone. She went in the back to talk to someone I assume it was Jeffrey her supervisor. She returned, advised us that they had blown the engine on the vehicle, and it was taken back to the auction. Oh by the way, we are just driven an hour and a half to see a vehicle that they had did not have the courtesy to call and let us know was no longer available. At that point she continued by saying that, "Oh we do have another jeep that’s available that we could show you. But this one is 10,000 more than the vehicle that you were looking for for."
I certainly would not suggest anyone considering a vehicle from them just go to the lot and look for yourself if you are really interested in dealing with these people. As far we are concerned, this was this was a bait and switch situation. They haven’t called us and ask us if we were still coming to laugh. At that point they could’ve let us know that the vehicle head blown up its engine and we shouldn’t waste our time. They called us to see if we were coming to see it. They offer you just a bit more than the competition, then a few days before your sale they send out an inspector who no matter what finds things or reasons to devalue your vehicle. So after being strung along for 3 plus weeks, and you're ready to make a deal, they pull the rug out from under you and attempt to steal your vehicle for a thousands less than what they originally offered. They deliberately value cars posted from dealerships higher than those of private sellers most likely to spawn more business through those dealerships or is there a kickback? It SHOULD be investigated. A price on a car between a private seller and a dealership should not be that different in price and USUALLY, a car posted from a dealership should be higher priced than a private seller, but CarGurus flips the deals so that it benefits the dealership. It will look like you are getting a "Good Deal" through the dealership, but if you post the exact same car from a private seller (as I did), it will show it as "overpriced" for the same exact car. This to me is criminal.
Case in point: I posted my car (2015 Porsche Cayman GTS with 7-Spd PDK and PTV, Bose stereo, Premium Package Plus, 30,765 miles, 3 owners (including myself), no accidents). I currently have it for sale for $69,500.00 in which they are saying it is $7,833.00 above market price at that price. Two other cars on CarGurus (both from dealerships) (both 2015 Porsche Cayman GTSs) with lesser options in both cases, one with 35,826 miles/4 owners/no accidents, the other 79,521 miles/5 owners/1 accident, the first one priced higher than mine at $70,247.00 and showing $2,562.00 below market, the other $61,873.00 and showing $3,012.00 below market. The value they have placed on my car is $61,667.00 compared to the 5-owner car/48,756 MORE miles/with 1 accident at $64,885.00.
Basically, what I have learned this last week (after 7 phone calls with CarGurus and one verifying the real value of my car with AutoCheck) is that CarGurus will deliberately value the cars placed on their site by dealerships higher than those placed by private sellers, either to help dealerships sell their cars, get more business through them, or maybe they are receiving a kickback of some sort in doing so? To deliberately lessen the value of one car from a private seller while deliberately raising the value of the same car at a dealership for increased business activity of whatever sort, is criminal and should be investigated by the powers at be. (All of these cars are currently posted on CarGurus as of September 18th, 2023. You can actually see it and do the math for yourself).

I got a reasonable price, knowing they had to sell it for a profit after their expenses. Two days before the pickup, they said the mechanical inspection showed 'undisclosed' damage so they had to reduce the price. One of the bits of undisclosed damage was poor tires. The tires were in good condition, at least 20K more miles on them. The other one was curb rash on a wheel. Both of these should have fallen under the 'good' condition category which drove my original offer. It looked like they were trying to find something wrong with it so they could reduce the price. We never sold one vehicle on this platform and we are asking for a full refund.

I submitted an inquiry concerning a car to a auto dealership in Georgia. The dealership advertised the car for the following price, $85,811.00. I received a call from the dealership almost immediately. I told them I would buy the car at the stated price. They informed me the car's price was actually $10,000 more than advertised price on CarGurus. I wrote a “bait and switch” review with inaccurate pricing details. Buyer beware. I was asked by CarGurus to edit my truthful and accurate review. CarGurus has no loyalty to customer, only their shareholder dealerships. They therefore have no credibility with the content of their reviews. Reviewer beware!

We purchased a Private Seller listing on CarGurus for our 1 Owner Like New Vehicle. CarGurus tried to dictate our price to list, so when we listed our Fair Price they attached a unauthorized Overpriced notation that discourages any potential Buyers to contact us. CarGurus is not a place to Pay for a Private Seller listing!! Wish we would have investigated similar reviews prior paying for listing.

I am in the price of purchasing a much sought after pickup. Found the perfect truck on CG from private seller. Everything is good so far. Pictures, VIN, mileage, history; all provided. The issue is the actual buying process. It is not geared towards virtual no contact buying/selling. The chat with my seller disappeared. The vehicle info and pictures-gone. My money? Gone as well with no vehicle. No bill of sale or receipt and T2 support is a joke! Look but do NOT buy thru CarGurus unless you are able to complete everything in person.

I sold my 2012 Acura TL to CarGurus. They offered more than CarMax or Carvana, and picked my car up at my house as scheduled. The inspector/driver was very good at his job. He was done in about 20 minutes with the paperwork and inspection. I signed the bill of sale on my phone and less than 24 hours later the cash was in my bank account. Very smooth and professional at every step. I am very pleased with the whole process. I received about 1,800 more than what Tesla was offering for my Acura on trade-in.

I sold my car to them so they didn’t explain me the money they offer was for pay my car pay off. The guy came to do inspection in my car and told me for sign the email as was receiving in the same moment. I didn’t have a time to read the document that was saying this. In this moment I call to them and they said, "I’m sorry we can’t do nothing now becaue you when signed you agreed." Really disappointed I gave my car for free.

I decided to see watch’s out there regarding a model of Nissan in 2019. I saw a few, all higher than my price range, so left the site. Within 5 minutes, I got a call from a salesman at a Eugene Nissan dealer. I said “not interested” and hung up. I sent them a Chat message saying that I did not want to be contacted, I wasn’t going to buy a car at current high prices, and received an email reply telling me that they have cars they think I might be interested in! I would not recommend this website unless you want car dealers calling and emailing you!

I listed my car yesterday but is not working on the website, my car is not listed, I paid and I spoke with support and they told me, to try later, refresh my browser... I am doing this for 30 hours, incredible how the customer is ignored.

I gave CarGurus $24.95 to list my car. I had a lot of problems uploading the photos. I had to do them one at a time which was extremely nerve-racking. 14 days time I had three people contact me on the first 48 hours. Two guys that wanted more photos. Never even read my replies or got back to me and one person locally that wanted to give me an estimate for my car. Now the listing shows as sold on CarGurus which is pretty interesting being it still sitting on my front driveway. My guess is they do that to try to make it seem like people actually sell their cars on there and I’m sure they do but I just see it as a waste of time and money.

CarGurus is in the pocket of the dealers. Their pricing of privately selling vehicles is a good $3000-$3500 less than the published KBB pricing. They clearly are in the pocket of the dealers and when this issue was raised to them they acted like they didn’t know about it and couldn’t do anything about it. No private seller should ever use CarGurus.

Having read their publicity about selling cars more quickly than Auto Trader, I created an ad, paid the listing fee and the upgraded $20 priority listing fee. I used the price they suggested. Five buyers contacted me...One with a offer at 40% of the listing, one at 60%, one a general inquiry, two "accepted" the price. In every case, when I wrote back and asked for the funds, the "buyers" disappeared (except the one offering 40% of the list price). On several occasions I wrote to CarGurus support for help, about half the questions received responses, generally after a couple of days. Frustrated, I look on line for an alternative and found TRED. You can go to that site for my review (or via Google reviews) of that car selling service, which truly exceptional.

I like this site. It’s very informative and I like that they give you the pricing comparison vs. retail and then lists them from best to worse. I also enjoy the information on the vehicle which helps in your car buying decision. The site seems to run faster on my phone than the other sites. The dealer contact info. is nice and not intrusive. It just makes the whole process easier which can be stressful and timely.

When I listed my truck last year, it was simple. I listed a car last week; I had to pay. Ok, no big deal, it is just $4.95. But, it doesn't really seem to be getting many views. I did, yesterday, finally get someone interested, and, I was able to reply to him. This morning, I went to check to see if he responded back (because we were discussing meeting TODAY), and I notice an email that I have to verify with a photo that I'm no scammer. Better do that real quick, I thought, so I can get in touch with this potential seller! I submitted my photo. Then guess what the page says??? It says, we will let you know within 2 business days!!!
Today is Friday and there is NO WAY to access my messages without this verification that should have been asked about WHEN I LISTED THE VEHICLE. So, now, I lost a potential buyer and I have to wait until (probably) Tuesday to have my listing reapproved, which means, that for 3-4 days, it has been removed from the site, for review, even though I paid money to list it.
