CarFax is the absolute worst!!!! They have the WORST customer service ever!! You can never believe what is on the CarFax report because they take information from anywhere and place it on the report instead of retrieving their information from reputable sources. We had a report that stated a car had an odometer rollback issue and now we are having trouble selling the vehicle due to CarFax's error.

A small oil change place had repeatedly reported false mileage to CarFax without any documentation of what the actual mileage was. When we filed a claim to have CarFax review and change this incorrect issue, the rep argued with me and tried to claim I was the one in the wrong, even though I have documentation stating the correct mileage at the time. Instead of listening to what I had to say she kept accusing me of being wrong and insisted that I was lying. Why would I pay CarFax monthly for this kind of service??

The AutoCheck Vehicle History report is the most accurate vehicle history report you can get. They take information from the Department of Motor Vehicles as well as reputable major dealerships instead of random businesses. The AutoCheck states nothing about an odometer rollback for this car and only has information from major dealerships and the Department of Motor Vehicles. You think CarFax would value all of their customers but apparently not. We also have CarFax linked to our dealership website where they display each report for each vehicle.

Most of our reports had a different dealers name and website on the report which directed potential customers off of our website to other dealers websites! So we are pretty much paying CarFax to redirect traffic to other dealers' websites. Even though we are technically not in a contract with CarFax they will not let us "terminate" our agreement so we are stuck with them for 6 months. I am at a loss for words with how disgusted and disappointed I am with the service we have received. CarFax is nothing but a waste. Save your money and time and use AutoCheck or another reputable vehicle history report site, not a paid advertised site like CarFax.

Was shocked and angry to find that I paid $54.99 only to get 5 reports by VIN!!! All private sellers only provide VIN but not plate numbers. I have purchased Carfax reports a few times in the last 10 years and was happy to use the service although price keeps going up. But this time, I am very very very upset and angry. Carfax is cheating its loyal customers. Hope other people can see my review and avoid being cheated.

I also got duped by Carfax. Paid for the unlimited Carfax reports and did not realize this only gave 5 reports using the VIN #. The unlimited is only for license plate numbers. I hate companies that use these deceptive tactics to raise their profit margin. They know exactly what they are doing with this false marketing. I hope you enjoy your profit margins Carfax. Buyer beware but shame on them. I thought they were reputable.

Found out through a dealer that my vehicle was in Carfax database as total loss. Vehicle was in an accident, but was not total. Carfax was contacted, they refused to correct, even though I have a clean title and vehicle is registered. Carfax states that an insurance company gave them that information but would not provide the name of insurance company, so I can follow up with the insurance company. Carfax is saying I must prove vehicle was not total. Proof is clean title, presently registered.

I want to say, coming from a customer service background, with American Express, I am pretty disgusted with their customer service & lack of help. I have a 2012 Kia coming up with an accident report on my car, & I've never been in a accident with this car. I have no proof of accident, no police report, and no insurance claim on this bogus accident. I've been trying to contact them since Friday, Jan 23rd and have yet to hear from anyone about my case. I did speak to a lady in customer service via chat because they don't have a call center. Her name was Mona, she DID tell me they're only up to Jan 19th on claims, which is so unprofessional. If you can't handle your claims, then it's time to hire more employees or open a call center.

I'm trying to trade in my car this Wednesday & this is becoming a customer service issue with the dealer I am working with. All because of a miscommunication on a non-existent accident I was in, apparently. I really hope I don't lose out on this trade over some incompetent website, that as by everyone else's reviews gives inaccurate information. Hopefully I hear from someone this week or I'm going to have to escalate this to the next level, as I am very dissatisfied. Beware future Carfaxers, do not use way too of an incompetent company run for the hills!!! And I am very disappointed in dealerships that use them especially Mercedes Benz. They should know better, by all 450 negative complaints against Carfax.

We went to trade in our car at two Ford dealers only to find out that Carfax is reporting structural damage. Neither dealer want the car because its almost impossible to sell a car with structural damage. The fact is this car had a very minor accident where a another car lightly dented the rear quarter. Total damage was under $1500. So we contacted the insurance adjuster who represented Farmers since it was the other ladies fault and he wrote us an email that clearly stated that no structural damage occurred and that the damage was only cosmetic. We went back and forth with Carfax but they just said nope the report says it had structural damage because of a little 's' on a line that mentions repair of the inner panel.

That panel is plastic! I tried to explain that the same person that filed the initial report is the same guy telling you that it was only cosmetic. After many frustrating back and forth communications via email Carfax said we will not correct it. So now we have a 2009 BMW 335i convertible in beautiful condition that can not be traded in. In addition we also paid for an Autocheck report and it accurately reports minor accident with no structural damage.

Purchased a Carfax "Unlimited Reports" package in January 2015. After running 5 reports a message appeared stating I have reached my limit for running VIN reports. BUYER BEWARE: CARFAX NO LONGER OFFERS ANY FORM OF UNLIMITED VIN SEARCH OPTION TO THE GENERAL PUBLIC!!! Although Carfax claims to offer unlimited car tag lookups, anyone can change the car tag or photoshop a different tag or place a dealer's tag on a vehicle which renders this type of search virtually worthless.

A bit more research indicates Carfax reports are increasingly found to contain errors--including falsified title and VIN information--which seems to indicate the company is becoming a bit sloppy. As a solution I googled "Most reliable VIN Search sites" and found Autocheck.com and Instavin.com. Autocheck.com claims unlimited VIN searches for 1 month. I tried Autocheck and ran over 30 VIN numbers successfully! Unlike Carfax, Autocheck gives you your money's worth. Plan on trying Instavin.com soon. Conclusion: Don't be ripped off by "carfaux".

In 2011 I obtained a Carfax report on a vehicle I wanted to purchase (2004 Jeep Grand Cherokee Limited) and the report came back NO ACCIDENTS, and my mechanic saw no problems. So I purchased the vehicle. Now in 2015 I try to trade-in the Jeep at a dealer and he offers me a very low price saying the vehicle had been in an accident in 2005. I was quite surprised. So I compared my Carfax report of 2011 to the dealer's Carfax report of 2015 and find mine has no accident for 2005 BUT his has an accident in 2005 (that was added in 2012 with no details or information on the alleged accident). I submitted a Buyback Guarantee report, but see that there is no mention of my situation on the Carfax site.

It gets even better. My Buyback Guarantee is for 3/11/2011 to 3/11/2012 (this alleged accident was added by Carfax after this date). What recourse do I have? I am very upset because the problem is costing me several thousand dollars, while Carfax makes millions. Is there anyone at Carfax to call? What is their telephone number?

I recently was looking at a newer car and decided to jump through all the hoops with the dealer, credit check, see how much they would give me for my trade in etc. I was almost ready to purchase the new car, but was told that they couldn't offer what they originally had put on the table due to a Carfax report showing frame damage to my car. I was shocked, my car has been in one minor accident, but there was no frame damage. At this point I walked away from the new car as the report caused the dealer to offer 50% of the original trade-in offer. I did a lot of legwork going back to the body shop who did the repair and having them pull records on the accident (it was over 5 years ago) and then contacting my old insurance company for their records on the accident. Both the body shop and insurance company said there was no frame damage to the vehicle. I submit all the documentation to Carfax to dispute the report and they reply that no, there is frame damage.

I'm at a loss at this point as the two reliable parties, the body shop and insurance who paid the claim, show no frame damage. CarFax is inaccurate and should not be trusted. They have essentially devalued my car when in fact the issue they are reporting is inaccurate. I wish there was more I could do. Be warned. If ever you are in a minor accident and your card needs repair, check the Carfax report. It would have been easier to try to sort this out 5 years ago than finding out at the dealership while trying to buy a new car.

The word "UNLIMITED" is intentionally-misleading, disingenuous, deceptive and gives the buyer the perception that they will have unlimited reports for 60 days. NOWHERE (except presumably buried in the fine print) on the face of the website upon purchase does CARFAX disclose that this is "unlimited...but only for if you request the report by PLATE". If you are shopping around car dealers you better make your choice of car quickly, because after running your 5th report by VIN number you will be surprised by a message prompting you to pay extra to continue using the service. To make things worse CARFAX provides no phone numbers to inquire directly about all this issues. I can't believe they have been able to get away for so long with such practices.

We went to trade in our vehicle only to have the dealer give a salvage value for our 2007 Altima. The reason is that Carfax (or Car Fraud as it should be) had listed that our vehicle had structural damage. It was in an accident, rear-ended, but there was no structural damage. We filed a complaint with Carfax and after they reviewed the repair report, they stated that their report was correct. This was because the car was put on a machine to make sure the frame was straight. Of course it was! If your vehicle is rear-ended, it should be checked to make sure the frame is straight. That does not mean there is structural damage and even if there are minor adjustments needed, that is minor in today's day and age. Now thanks to Car Fraud, we cannot trade our car in and get what it's worth in terms of dealer trade-in value.

CarFax has inaccurate information in my file and because of it I was unable to trade in my car. They show 2 owners when the car has always been registered in my name and ALWAYS in my possession, by their own definition I am the only owner. They also report an extra accident that never occurred. On my one accident I did have, they report "Vehicle Towed From Scene" - I do not even know how they know this. I called AAA because of the weather when the accident occurred and I wanted to get the body shop to photograph and document the damages before the weather could be blamed for anything. The car was 100% drivable but because CarFax has it listed as towed, the dealership says that indicates a major accident and they devalued the car significantly. They also devalued the car due to the 2 Owners designation. Because of this I could not trade the vehicle in. Someone seriously needs to file a Class Action suit on these guys. They seem to be able to put any information they want in their reports with no responsibility for the accuracy. When I got home from the dealership I ran an AutoCheck report and found it was 100% accurate.

The car only had 4399 miles when I bought it from the auction, and the back of the title was also signed with that much miles by the company that was selling it (enterprise holdings) and the odometer reading on the speedometer was 4399.

2 months later I'm trying to sell the car and I pull the Carfax for the customer and bam I see the mileage reported on the time of sale was reported 24399 miles. Way to ** go Carfax. Way to ruin a sell with fake information. The car is 2014 and was built 5 months ago. Obviously someone made a mistake. 24399 and 4399? Ring a bell. Sure it helps both the consumer and the dealer to make sure they are getting a good deal but the truth is they are creating a monopoly, which leaves you no option to between other companies, and they provide unreliable information. Also, that since no accident was involved, a negative CarFax report would be generated....in fact, said not reportable. Car now has 35,000 miles, looks new, drives new, etc....awesome car! Dealer had the car for 23 days with painless dent removal, replaced the hood and a roof panel. I recently was looking at Jag XKR, had a friend run a CARFAX report for me. I was stunned to see a report of "structural" damage from accident (no airbag deployment). Current dealer says he can't even take it in on trade. I feel really screwed! The report said that our local garage serviced the car repeatedly a year before we bought the car and that 90,000 miles were put on in one month! Then a year later when we bought the car, the mileage was taken off. Naturally the dealer brought this up and when we showed the absurdity of the report they attempted to take the trade off the table or give us very little for it. The Carfax report does not mention that and thus I worthless. The repair must have cost hundreds of dollars and would mean the car was in a body shop yet it is not on the report! The dealer can now say they didn't know and I have to confront them in hopes they can repair it correctly. What a pain and more time spent on troubles. Carfax is worthless if you can't leave feedback or get an explanation. The owner before me may be hiding the info which you would hope Carfax could uncover. It took weeks to get a response from Carfax. They said that one of the accidents was a duplicate of the other accident (WHAT???). That accident occurred 1000 miles from my home and it involved nothing more than my license plate number....that's right, no VIN, I was not identified as the driver, wrong type car....and yet, CarFax stuck those accident reports on my car. I ended up having to trade it in and losing approximately $4000. I was outraged. After I searched for hours to find a contact listing for Carfax, it took them three weeks to clear the fraudulent accidents from my car. By that time, I had traded it in because of necessity. I cannot believe that they are allowed to post such BS without more information...just on a license plate number? I think a Class Action suit is necessary.

Yes, 3 accidents within the 3 yrs lease. There were $2,900 & $4950 in collision damages and $1k property damage. The property damage I can disregard, but $8k in damages and it was passed on as certified pre-owned. I'm still in the middle of working it out with the dealer because they're trying to have the auto body tech examine the car.

Would I have bought it knowing there was accidents? Probably. But would I have paid the certified pricing and believing in my mind that I was getting nothing less than stellar car? No. It's not the accidents that bothered me as much as carfax trying to pass off their reports as accurate and having dealers use it as their main resources to certify a vehicle. I'm fairly certain that the dealership knows about these sort of glitches with carfax, yet it's being advertised everywhere as a reliable and necessary tool when buying a vehicle.

They just simply charged me. Then a new window opened and said there are no reports available and I was sent back to the order screen. If there's no report, why am I being charged? On top of it all, it said 21 report so why is there no report and why was I charged for a report that should be there but apparently isn't?

So, I submitted a request for refund because their site states "Money Back Guarantee if Not 100% Satisfied - No Risk!" Obviously, I'm beyond dissatisfied with this company. I'd like to see exactly how long it takes to get a refund.

When I purchased my 2005 Chevrolet Tahoe back in 2011, the Carfax report was clear, with nothing out of the ordinary. About 2 months ago, a teenager in my neighborhood went on a joy ride and rear-ended my truck while it was parked in front of my residence. The other guy's insurance covered everything, and a local body shop repaired the damage to my vehicle (new bumper, etc.).

Fast forward to today, and I'm trying to trade my Tahoe in for something else. The dealership calls back and says my trade is worth several thousand less than we thought, because the Carfax report shows structural damage. STRUCTURAL DAMAGE?? I have the body shop's repair report in front of me, and NOTHING about structural damage is reported here! Nothing about the frame, and all of the repair orders state "Remove/Replace" for things like the bumper, bumper brackets, and the "Chevrolet" and "Tahoe" nameplates.

WHERE is Carfax getting this Structural Damage report? I asked about challenging it, and the dealership says "not happening. Once Carfax has damage reported, it NEVER comes off." Who decided that they are the 'end-all' for accurate vehicle history? Sounds to me like they do NOT have accuracy as their priority!

Purchased a $54.99 (unlimited license plate reports for 60 days) and was able to purchase a 2002 Dodge Durango 5.9 R/T with 128k miles on it at United Auto sales in Midway City, CA.

I had registered it under carfax buy back guarantee (for my peace of mind) and to my surprise the Durango snapped a connecting rod at cruising speed (60mph @ 1800 rpm)... This puzzled me as this kind of catastrophic incidents shouldn't happen at this mileage and highly suggests this was not the actual mileage and exceeds it mechanical limits. The carfax report details a "good" maintenance record. So I contacted (which was not easy at all) carfax because I was suspecting that the odometer was tampered and below was the reply I got:

    =================
The only data covered by the CARFAX Buyback Guarantee are missing branded titles issued by a department of motor vehicles. As a result, we do not offer compensation for missing accidents or other damage events.

i was expecting something like, ok we will help get an official report on the odometer (to verify if it was indeed tampered)..

I saw the report and was surprised to see that the report showed 1st Owner Issues: an Accident in 2007 and a report stating Mileage Inconsistency 1/2008. Both incidents were dated before the original report which I ran back in 2008.

I thought that purchasing a CARFAX would protect me from buying a car with Accident history or other issues. It appears I was wrong in believing in this service. There is a major error or a very poor reporting system if the records didn't show up when I initially purchased the car. I feel like this 3rd Party reporting is a scam if the data is not reliable and hurting the consumers that actually own the cars. I have filed an inquiry with CARFAX and am still awaiting a response. The 30 Day Unlimited Reports Package is a Bogus HOAX. It Only allows you to run 5. Yes, only FIVE Vin reports. That's ALL. If you don't need to run any more than 5 because you found that needle in a hay stack, then you'll do just fine. I've used Carfax for many years now, and referred many people to use it. The info can be most valuable when it comes to vehicles that has had their odometer rolled back (example: I found a 2005 that only had 119K miles, but found on the report 4 yrs earlier it had over 157K and was rolled back), or cars that have been sold by big dealers to Auction houses, because the vehicle wouldn't pass the big dealers inspection to qualify it to be sold on their lot, so they're sold at auction then purchased by a Mom n Pop Dealer to sell to you. The dealer isn't going to tell you they bought it at an auction to sell. Then they wouldn't get as much - as well as flood or fire damage etc, etc.

Good luck on finding a way to contact them to ask a question about this. You just be directed to their Q&A section and only become frustrated. You can run a license plate. But wait a minute - not everyone that sells a used car leaves the plate on it. Some people remove the plates in order to force the buyer to register the car and get new plates to be legal. Nothing worse than selling a car, then find out later it was in a hit and run accident, or worse yet - used in some sort of illegal activity that now the license number is traced back to you and you have police knocking on your door because you left the plates on a car you sold.

I finally broke down and tried a CARFAX report for $39.99. I felt it was excessive but, I wanted to see what information they had on my 1996 F-350 Crew Cab Dually Power Stroke. Having repaired all my own vehicles since 1969. I've been fully disabled since 1999. The thing is something doesn't add up to me. The mileage doesn't seem right. I have just over 99,000 miles on the 1996 F-350 truck. When I bought it used in 2003, it had 58,793 miles on the odometer. Luckily I bought an extended warranty. Within two weeks, I had to replace the water pump. This is not a normal failure with less than 60,000 miles. All my cars and trucks, previously, went to least 80,000 miles. I put it off as just a fluke.

At 72,000, miles I had to have the AC compressor replaced, it froze up. That again is not a normal MTBF. Again I put it off. At 77,000 miles, the fuel pump leaked. Now at 99,000 miles, the whole front steering linkage had to be replaced including the track bar. Everything but, the ball joints. I've never had a vehicle front end fail with less than 160,000 miles, no matter the age, and then maybe only one tie rod or drag link.

None of this shows in the report. Not one piece of it and, the work was all done at a Ford Dealer through the extended warranty, except for the recent front steering failure.. The report was sparse and incomplete. This shows me something is not right. I feel the truck has considerably more miles on it and not 99,000 miles. We have a new Ford dealer in town and I'm going to take it there and have them check the odometer reading. The report also shows no recalls when I know there was at least one done. Do I feel like I was ripped off? You bet. Never again will I even consider a Carfax report. There are several other places that are cheaper and do as good, if not, better job of reporting. We were shopping for a new car and decided to pay for a Carfax subscription. FYI... unlimited is only for license plates not VINs. We ran a couple of reports for possible vehicles and things appear fine, we then decided to run Carfax on our current vehicles and it shows our truck was in an accident last year, but it never was. Our truck was in an accident by the previous owner and it does show that, but with Carfax showing it in another collision (when it wasn't) will decrease the value if we ever try to sell it.

So on that note, don't put all your faith into a Carfax report and see what you can find out about the vehicle before going to Carfax. In the State of AZ, if you're in an accident, the person responsible owes you the diminished value of the vehicle. I think because Carfax is showing my truck as being in an accident they owe me the diminished value of my truck. In March of 2013 (when they say my truck was in an accident), the truck never left the driveway. It's lucky if it gets 5000 miles a year. I would even call the DMV in front of potential customers and let them speak with the technician who would verify the title was clean.

July of 2007, State of Indiana supposedly reported a junk title, which showed on Carfax. Didn't know this until my local dealership pointed it out. So I filled out the form to report the discrepancy with Carfax. I received a confirmation #. So we will see how this pans out. I attached supporting documentation of my original green Michigan title. Form was easy to fill out. Customer service was also helpful.

I recently went to trade in my vehicle and the dealer offered $4-8K less than expected because the Carfax report they ran showed an accident with severe damage a year and a half ago. Carfax told me their source for the severe damage was a police report, but that police report is inaccurate since there was only a dented fender and front flat tire, which I have photos to prove. Carfax informed me that I need to get the police to amend the police report in order for Carfax to change their erroneous info. This is ridiculous. 'Innocent until proven guilty' is definitely not in practice at this company. Carfax disseminates unstandardized, purely subjective data on accidents which is costing unsuspecting vehicle owners millions of dollars in lost value. There needs to be some consumer protection constraints/watchdog policies on Carfax just as there is with credit reporting agencies. I would definitely join a class action lawsuit against Carfax.

I went to a dealership today to trade in my 2007 Chrysler Pacifica, which I bought brand new. This car is in near perfect condition, low mileage and has never been in any accidents. You can image how surprised and embarrassed I was when the salesman at the dealership showed me the CARFAX report on my car which showed that there was an "unreported 'accident' sometime between October 2009 and October 2010." No date, no information, just some verbiage about police reports (see attached image). This car has never been in an accident or even had anything happen to it that would have been reported to the police or an insurance company.

I've written to CARFAX to get this straightened out, but after reading everything here, I don't have much hope that it will get cleared from the report. This error has cost me almost $3000 on my trade in. Even the salesman at the dealership said he "hated CARFAX" because he'd personally seen so many errors that adversely affected sales. He'd also never seen anything like the entry on my report, neither had his boss. Still, they wouldn't give me the money I should have gotten for my car because of CARFAX so I didn't do the deal.

After my truck caught fire (and was repaired), my truck's Carfax report erroneously showed the airbags deployed. No airbags were deployed. When it comes to trading in a vehicle - deployed airbags are a BIG DEAL (much bigger than a fire!). It took me awhile to figure out how to correct the Carfax report. I'd like to share my experience with you. First - get your insurance company involved BEFORE going to the Carfax site and submitting your claim! Carfax will want documentation to back up your claim. Second - you can only deal with Carfax via a non-specified person e-mail. For example, you can't send it to **. It's one e-mail address fits all for every e-mail. So, when Carfax responds to your request (and they will respond) they'll assign a claim #. Fill out all the information on the Carfax claim that you can. Then, ask your insurance company to e-mail their information and USE THE CARFAX CLAIM # on all correspondence! It took a few weeks and a lot of coordination with my insurance company and Carfax - but I DID get my erroneous Carfax report changed!!! Carfax even sent me a free Carfax report! Be patient. I'm very happy my insurance company and Carfax worked well together to get this corrected.

When I bought a new car and traded in my 2007 Sierra, the dealer showed me the Carfax stating that the truck had been in an accident, overturned, ran off the road, and hit a ditch. Nothing could be farther from the truth! I was a passenger in the truck which my husband was driving. We were trailering a brand-new boat (we found out later that the boat dealer never adjusted the trailer to fit the boat). We got up to speed on the Garden State Parkway just north of Cape May, NJ, when the trailer jackknifed, sending the boat off the road and into the grass. The truck stayed on the road, and sustained no damage. The police officer treated the incident as "loss of cargo."

Somebody at Carfax probably didn't know the difference between a truck and a boat. My trade should have been worth at least $8,200, according to KBB, but the dealer would only give me $6,000. I didn't check Carfax before I traded it in, since I didn't want to spend the $50 on what I thought would have been a clean report. I think Carfax should offer at least one free report per consumer per vehicle (kind of like getting a free credit report), since dealers rely so heavily on the information provided by Carfax.

First of all, insurance company will not fully insure a total loss vehicle. We have changed insurance companies in the past year. Next, we have only just recently finished paying the vehicle off and received the clear title from the finance company. Finally, the car was in a hailstorm where the back window was broken and some minor body dings but all repairable and certainly not a total loss!

The bigger problem is that we can't seem to get any response or assistance from the Carfax group to determine how to best fix this inaccuracy which will most certainly follow us. Carfax is no better than a credit bureau reporting agency. It's just another example of a database group that purchases information, refuses to divulge the source and hasn't been willing to help correct the mistake in their database. Sadly, many car dealers use this database as their sole source of decision-making. Everybody loses.

BMW sold it as certified pre-owned, meaning Carfax was clean and there were no issues with the vehicle. The report said an accident was reported to Carfax sometime between April 2008 and April 2009. Clearly, that was before I had bought the car from BMW. The report said that the car had sustained structural damage. Once I was told about this, we contacted the BMW dealership and said I had bought a CPO vehicle from them and if the Carfax report is correct, it should not have been sold as such. The dealership had the car inspected by their own in-house technicians, as well as an independent body shop. Both gave me reports, saying all parts on the frame were original BMW parts and no damage was detected to any parts of the vehicle.

We submitted both reports to Carfax, asking them to clear the report of any structural damage. Carfax refused and said that they had documentation evidencing the damage and we were told where the damage had been repaired. We then contacted the company where the repair was done and was told by them that all paperwork for 2008 was offsite in storage, but even if it were still on-site, only the person who brought the car in for repair could request the documents. Again, we turned back to BMW. They, in turn, contacted Carfax to get this resolved. Carfax still refused to modify the report even with two reports saying there is no damage to the car. Carfax has also refused to show anyone what documents they are basing their denials on.

Three months later, the car is still sitting on the lot waiting to be sold. As soon as potential buyers see the Carfax report, they immediately say they aren't interested in the vehicle, even if they are shown the two reports saying the vehicle is not damaged. I have had to make 3 payments on a car I don't even have possession of all because of a false Carfax report. Needless to say, instead of having one cheaper car payment, I am forced to pay for two vehicles.

After driving 250 miles back home, my grandson told me on Saturday that the car had been in a wreck. He is the body shop foreman for a Toyota dealer in Tupelo, MS. He has been doing this type work for 18 or 19 years. The VIN on the car is **. Like I said, the Carfax came back clean. We called the dealer, and they made it right with us! The dealer is John Thornton Chevrolet / 1971 Thornton Rd., Lithia Springs, GA 30122. We still had to drive back over there. So in short, your Carfax is not worth the paper it’s printed on!

Carfax report is incorrect and Carfax will not help. A few years ago, I had an incident with another car that cut me off and ran in to the rear tire of my Ford F250 4X4. No damage to my truck at all but the Mercedes that ran in to me was a mess. I called to have a police report taken as the accident was not my fault and the driver of the Mercedes fled the scene before the police arrived. I called the insurance and nothing was ever paid out. Carfax insists the truck is salvage. (LOL.) That is not true. Carfax is really a poor way to look up the history of a car. Inaccurate reporting to the public is fraud or defamation of character. Someone needs to stop these thieves. The public is paying money for a very false security that is beyond inaccurate.

While the truck was parked in a parking lot, someone "keyed" the right side passenger door. I filed a claim with my insurance carrier and then took the vehicle to Sawgrass Ford in Florida. Today I went to a dealer to look into a trade for a new lease vehicle. When he ran a Carfax report on my vehicle, there was the accident. The total cost to repaint and pinstripe the one door was $619. However, the diminished value on my pristine truck cost me $5,000 just due to this one erroneous Carfax report.

We pulled a Carfax, which showed no issues whatsoever with the car. We even printed it for our records. We looked over every inch of the car and it is completely flawless, even still has the new car smell! It is now November 2012 and the car has 8,500 miles on it. When we attempted to sell the car yesterday, the purchaser said the Carfax shows one accident record. How is that possible? We pulled the report again and it shows an accident on 7/2/12 and the vehicle was towed, with a small disclaimer saying Carfax began reporting this accident on 10/8/12.

That late posting of information is now costing us ($20,000 dearly) in the car's value! We cannot get anyone from Carfax to return our calls, even as a dealer with an account with them! They are the biggest resource for inaccurate information about vehicles that is costing everyone thousands of dollars daily. They are completely unaccountable for their actions and results of their poor business! Something needs to be done to save the public and dealers from their poor business practices and inaccurate information!

My husband and I bought a 2009 Honda Accord EX-L, and we just found out today, November 3, 2012, that our Honda was involved in an accident. We bought this car on 7/17/2012 from a dealer in Northern Virginia. We asked the dealer if it was ever involved in an accident and to show us the CARFAX report. We looked over the CARFAX by phone, and he, of course, said that there was no accident and there was nothing wrong with the car. My husband drives the car more than me. He decided that he didn't want a car payment and not too sure about owning a 4 cylinder. So he put it on Craigslist and Auto Trader for sale.

We had someone come to test drive and see the car. They called us back later that evening and left us a message because we were out most of the day. They decided to pass on buying the car due to information on the CARFAX. They pulled the CARFAX and noticed that the airbags had been deployed and that it was in an accident. My husband and I believe in being honest. We didn't want these people to think that we were lying so we called them back immediately and apologized. We asked them where they have seen this information about an accident. They said CARFAX so we were very surprised because we have seen the CARFAX when we bought the car.

Now, my husband and I realized what the dealer probably did. He showed us a CARFAX for another 2009 Honda Accord. He also lied to us. They emailed us a copy and we printed it for our records. We will follow up on this and see if there is any recourse against the dealership. Any advice from anyone would be helpful. The location where the car was purchased is Northern Virginia on Pleasant Valley Road, Chantilly.

However, the trunk leaked badly during the first rain and upon inspection, I noticed that there was some substance applied where the seal should be, indicating something was wrong. The power window on the driver’s side failed a few days after purchasing the car. Upon inspection, it was plain that the little wheels that operate the window had been temporarily fixed. I took the car into a Chevrolet dealership to have all this looked at, and it was discovered the car was out of alignment. It was determined that the car had definitely been involved in an accident that caused the most of the passenger side of the car all the way to the trunk to be damaged underneath some carefully hidden repairs.

I purchased a used, low mileage car from a new car dealer's used car inventory. It had a clean Carfax report. Within 6 months, a rattle noise was coming from the back of the car. My mechanic couldn't figure out where it was coming from. A few weeks later, when I was on the freeway doing approximately 65 mph and the rattle noise became significantly louder, my rear window popped out in one piece. It didn't crack or shatter before it just popped out and shattered when it hit the pavement.

Soon thereafter, the rear view mirror and the manufacturer's emblem fell off and the windshield cracked. My body shop closely inspected my car and saw signs of sloppy body work. They told me that the entire car had been repainted and the paint job was done very poorly. The dealership's service manager agreed to replace the windshield, back window and emblem at no charge. They still claimed they were unaware that the car had obviously been in a rollover accident yet they were willing to fix the problems. They said they would take the car back and put me in another used car but I would have to qualify with the bank.

I didn't qualify with the lender but I still feel that they should have taken the car back and under the circumstances, they should have swapped out the salvaged car with another used car of equal value. They wouldn't do that and within a few months, the Rally Group, who owned the Saturn dealership, went out of business. They still, to this day, own several dealerships in the Auto Mall in Palmdale, CA. Do I have any recourse considering that the vehicle's engine is about to give out and I still owe approximately $5,000? And the car will soon be inoperative. My car lease matured on 7/1/2012 and rather than turn the car in and pay the penalty for excessive mileage, I decided to purchase another automobile, using the leased car as a trade-in. During the negotiations on the car I intended to purchase, I was informed that a current Carfax indicated that my leased car had been in a multiple car accident and as such, the trade-in value was going to be several thousand dollars less than originally quoted. I was rather shocked by this revelation and claimed that I'd never been in a multiple car crash. However, the dealership said they had to abide by the Carfax report.

Knowing that I'd never been in an accident, I contacted the collision center my husband and I had used over the years and queried them over the report. They did verify that in December of 2010, they did touch up the front and rear bumpers of my car as they were scratched in a few places; the rear bumper was scratched as the result of a car tapping into me as I sat at a stop sign. I asked the auto collision company why they would report such an insignificant repair to Carfax to which the responded that, they don't report anything to Carfax, that this information is supplied by insurance companies. The insurance company representing the individual who bumped into me paid for the repair to my car and reported this to Carfax.

In my opinion this was a minor event and for there to be a Carfax record which puts forth a report claiming my car was "involved in a crash and damaged in multiple places," is not only an egregious misrepresentation of the facts, but a damaging report with unwarranted financial repercussions on me as a consumer.

I need this error corrected as soon as possible. I was hit in the rear while stopping at a red light and headed east on Martin Luther King Blvd., Tampa, Florida in Hillsborough County. Please note I was hit in the rear by a vehicle headed in the same direction.

The police report has an incorrect statement identifying my vehicle as headed west, and the ticketed vehicle as headed east. Therefore, it is impossible for the damage report to be correct as my vehicle received damage in the rear, and the violator's vehicle received damage to the front. I do have legal counsel and will notify him of this if I cannot resolve this quickly. Thank you for your assistance in this matter.

Of course, the Titan has sustained minor scratches in the paint on the front left bumper and wheel only. The Jetta's front quarter panel, right side of bumper and the washer fluid container were all dragging the ground (good job Titan). So it comes time to sell my Titan when I have 10,000 miles on it. Her report then stated that there was only minor damage! Seriously? The driver of the Jetta has easily $7,000 in damages to her vehicle and very easily could have had frame damage (I didn't see her estimates, but I know). The question is, what do I do? The problem with this is my car, according to two different auto shops, does not have frame damage as it was fixed after it was hit by a drunk driver. Originally after the accident, All Time Auto in Point Pleasant, New Jersey fixed my car. They worked on it for 2 months or more and did all types of diagnostic tests. He told me, when all was said and done, that there was no frame damage.

Several months later, I went to a car dealership to try and trade in my car for something different. They ran my Carfax and told me that I was unable to do anything with my car as it was at a negative value because it reports frame damage. At that point, I contacted GEICO and began arguing with them as to why I was given back a car that supposedly has frame damage. They had me take my car to Jack’s Auto Body in Toms River, NJ on Route 9. They ran tests as well and it came back that there was nothing wrong and no frame damage.

Because this repair was extensive enough, and cost as much as it did (the convertible top replacement was $2,500 alone, which didn't even get damaged in the accident), Carfax has labeled it with all kinds of red flags, rendering the car worth nothing more than "wholesale" to a dealer for trade in, and unsaleable for anywhere near its KBB value. Never mind that the car was inspected by my Honda dealer, and their technician found the car to be properly repaired, it's served me reliably and without issue for the last 3 years, and when I took the car to a professional detailer, he could not even tell where the repair was, because it was done so well. In the process, we asked for a carfax report to see what repairs had been done to the vehicle and to see if it had been damaged in any way. The carfax report came back with a pretty clean record. We bought the car and it started having issues right away. The steering column was making a horrible noise when you turn, the passenger airbag light wasn't working, there is a noise at the front end. So we fought with the dealership to fix these things. They said that they fixed the steering and the airbag issue was because the passenger needed to be over 120lbs and stated that I was only 110lbs, which I am clearing more than that.

I took the vehicle to a different dealership for a recall issue and asked them to look into the airbag. Of course, I had to pay for the diagnosis and they found that the car needed a dash cluster and it would be around $500.00 for it. I also asked for a printout of the vehicle repairs and there is a list of things that were not reported to carfax. The repairs were all done at the dealership we bought the car from. I called GM corporate and they are telling me there is nothing they can do. I would have never bought the car with a list of problems that long, especially a 2008 that had major repairs. We took the car to a local body shop to see if they could determine how the water was getting into the trunk. They found broken glass in the spare tire well. The source of the leak was a poorly replaced rear glass. They assured me that this would could easily be fixed by Acura as it is still under the warranty (and it is indeed under the warranty mileage). But Acura found other issues for the noise and will not cover it under warranty! They showed me different Carfax with an accident. I bought the car on Dec 18. The accident happened on Oct 31. So now it shows, but it never showed up for my purchase. I have the copy.

While at Carfax to obtain an appraisal on my vehicle, the appraiser told me I had two accident reports on my record! I am the only owner of this car and it has never been involved in any type of accident. As a result, his offer came in very low wholesale. This so-called "fax" report is costing me thousands! Other than the "report", my car was in great condition, always garaged and not a blemish. I loath companies like Carfax ("fax" because they are not "facts"). Very irresponsible. Shouldn't this company be required to have proof to back up their claims before they can tarnish the value of your car? This is shameful. I haven't found any venue to contest their report. I'm ready to join any lawsuit. In addition, if I had accidents, my insurance would have gone up! Carfax **. Consumers beware: Do not believe their reports.

My vehicle was struck from behind on June 1, 2011, and it suffered a modest amount of damage to the rear bumper, etc. The MD State police officer on the scene reported it correctly. Carfax picked up the police report and misinterpreted th coding of field 61 (safety equipment) and the specific sub-field coding "32" (safety equipment in use, which "32" means "airbags and seat belts"). The Carfax entry also said that the "airbag" deployed, which it did not.

I provided the Carfax people with copies of the itemized repair bill (that State Farm paid) which made no mention of an airbag replacement, a copy of the MD State Police Officers report, and an email from the Investigating officer and a copy of the Reporting Instruction page (MAARs) which clearly state that field 61 /32 only refers to the safety equipment available and in use.

They still refuse to correct the entry in the Carfax report. I am now in the process of getting the MD STATE Police Officer to write a letterhead letter that states that there was no airbag deployment. I find this entirely over-the-top and totally inexcusable. If you ever thought that Government bureaucrats are difficult, try using common sense with Carfax! Close to hopeless.

I purchased a 2008 BMW X5 for Tom Masano of Reading, the Carfax stated the vehicle had never been in an accident, I then found the rear bumper cover had clearly been hit and decided to take it to my local BMW dealer and had it replaced. Then now to my surprise, I have noticed that both front fenders have apparently been painted or replaced as there it a noticeable difference in the color and quality of the paint. This is extremely obvious in direct sunlight.

Purchased a 2007 From North Coast Auto in Cleveland through eBay. They provided a car fax report that was current (supposedly) within a couple days of purchase. Knew it had a fender bender but a clean title as I had the history. The auction announced the car had a bent frame and the dealer knew it but no one informed me. Now 3 years later, I find out otherwise through Auto Check and the dealer is unwilling to do anything about it. They even said it still had the manufacturers warranty which also was bogus. At no time did they furnish an accurate history before, during or after the said purchase.

I work at a small independent auto body shop. When we do a repair on a vehicle, we have absolutely no contact with any company that is associated with or is similar to Carfax. Recently we have a customer that has false information reported to Carfax on a vehicle we repaired. I am trying to locate the source or sources who are supplying the information to them. I know beyond a shadow of a doubt that it doesn't come from us. We asked the insurance company and they claim they didn’t report it.

There was not a police report done on this particular accident, so that eliminates the police department. We have even contacted our estimating company and they deny involvement. As an employee of a repair shop, I feel dissatisfied with Carfax because when false information is reported, my customer will call and question our credibility when the honest truth is, we are not involved. I agree with others that it is the vehicle owners’ right to know who reports any information on their personal vehicles. At least there would be an avenue to dispute discrepancies.

I approached the dealer about trading in my car and buying a new one, the same dealer from which I bought the vehicle and at which I have had it serviced. When they appraised it, they pulled the CarFax report.

The report is wrong and it will costs me thousands of dollars unless it is fixed. The report contains an entry stating that my car was repaired in San Antonio, TX and that it had an odometer reading of over 100,000 miles. I live in Chicago and have never been to San Antonio. And the car has never left Illinois. It has never been near Texas and has less than 60,000 miles on it.

I called the dealer in Texas and they have no record of the vehicle and therefore cannot correct an error that does not exist. The dealer cannot buy it until the CarFax report is corrected because of the potential odometer fraud. And I cannot reach CarFax other than their unresponsive on-line e-mail complaint form. Isn't there some way to contact them?

CARFAX has an accident listed twice on my report. Thus, it looks like the vehicle was in two accidents rather than one. I was not able to get the best trade in value for the car since the dealer thinks the vehicle has been in two accidents when it has only been in one. There is no recourse for the consumer to challenge or modify the information in a CARFAX report.

I am selling my car and the Carfax says it was involved in an accident. My car has never been in an accident. My trailer was, at one time, but never my car. I am having trouble selling it now. Ridiculous! My loss is about $3,000 I'm sure. If some attorney wants to ** with this, fine with me.

I am battling the Carfax and Autocheck entities as well. It's a shame that so many people put their faith in these reports. I examined my vehicle very carefully when I purchased it two years ago. 1.5 years later, an "accident" shows up unknown to me until I pulled the report. The accident shows as minor and with the Autocheck report, actually lists two police case numbers but not an exact police agency. I have spent hours calling various police agencies in AZ trying to find this mysterious accident, and nobody has any record of it at all. The police case numbers are non-existent in any of their databases.

There is no evidence to support there was even an accident on the car. Carfax and Autocheck only give you vague answers as it is their policy not to divulge their sources, which I find disturbing. This is my car, and I should have the right to the car's history. In fact, under the G.R.A.M.A act, I can obtain public records from police departments but since they are concealing the agency (or source) from me, I am unable to and I feel this is not right. I really feel there should be a class-action suit of some kind for these two companies. People are losing out on sales or are taking hits on asking prices due to their bogus information they put out.
