My son purchased a used F250 truck in Texas. The Carfax was clean. It reported one owner. We thought we had a good truck. It was very evident it was in a flood. The Carfax did not report this. He was going to purchase another used truck. Same thing, clean Carfax and the two trucks we looked at were from Houston and were flood trucks. Buyer beware, Carfax does not report this.

Bought a 2014 slightly used car in 2014 with 5000 miles on it. Carfax was clear of ANY damage. I was gonna trade it in in 2018 but was told the car had been wrecked according to Carfax. So at some point AFTER I received the clean Carfax these idiots marked my car as wrecked with safety concerns by the 1st owner. I had no option but to let them take it to auction. The money I would have used to trade with is now gone. Carfax can take their so called service and stick it. It is worthless, I will refuse to use their crap service. There are other services out there. How they are still the go to for car reports is freaking ridiculous.

I just learned that a common scam with Carfax is reporting accidents that never happened. We are trying to trade in our 2018 Kia Sorrento. It is a lease car. Like so many others, that’s when we found out Carfax shows it has been in an accident. This is completely false information. About three months ago, my husband called me at work to make sure I was alright because our insurance contacted him about an accident claim. The supposed accident happened in a town two hours away. I told my husband that I was at work, and walked out and snapped a photo of our car in the parking lot. The insurance company questioned us...how did they know we hadn’t rushed and repaired the car, they asked my husband. Are you kidding? How did they know it was in an accident...there were no photos, no police report, basically no proof.

Insurance told us the license and vin matched the accident report! We went round and round with our insurance, and thought this was taken care of. It was not. The “accident” and damage is on the Carfax report. Currently, our insurance is working with us to help dispute the claim, but we will likely have to get an attorney. There is no police report, no name, only a claim number! Our insurance says the report to Carfax was not done by them, so they aren’t able to remove it. The moral is that anyone can make up or steal your Vin and insurance information, and file an accident report on you, and it is up to the victim to dispute and remove the false information. What a great way to cost us thousands of dollars in vehicle value! Carfax is a huge scam and should be ignored.

Carfax can only tell you what they are told by car dealers... For example; dealer reports that vehicle had to have an electrical check when in reality the system shorted out. But they don't tell Carfax that. Dealers were, and are what they will always be; sneaks. By looking at my vehicle report, you wouldn't recognize it as my car. Carfax did a good job but they can only report what they're told.

Company is very expensive and does not have accurate information when it comes to used vehicles. They want you to pay big dollars to list your used cars for sale. I listed my brand new truck for sale with a clean title that I had, next thing you know I go online to look at my truck. The ad stated total loss vehicle. I had called Carfax. They had requested that I faxed my title to them. Lo and behold next day Carfax states they would not remove the total loss brand and they proceeded to state that you can still have a clean title and the vehicle be a total loss. Are you kidding me? This truck was never ever in a accident at all. Everyone be smart and save your money. Have your mechanic go over your next vehicle. Carfax is a 3rd party who knows nothing about used cars. They collect data that's all they do. Lotta times it's inaccurate. Beware Carfax is a Scam!!!! Be smart consumers. Save your money!!!

I opened a case (case no. **) with Carfax about a week ago when I was trying to sell my car and found out a damage reported on my car back in March 01, 2016. I leased out my 2015 Mazda CX-5 on Dec 6th 2014 from McDonald Mazda in CO and have been driving it since then. Serviced it on time every six months and kept it in meticulously. With growing family I planned to sell it and buy something bigger. To my surprise I found out a damage reported back in 2016. So I opened up a case with Carfax to which they responded that the report came from a trusted source and they cannot disclose who it is. All they can say is that it was a frontal damage and nothing else. They say "Damage can be a result of many different types of events. Examples include contact with objects (other cars, trees, traffic signs, road debris, etc), vandalism, reconditioning, or weather-related events."

This is something unacceptable since I am the only owner and have never given anyone else to drive it. And I know for sure that nothing ever happened to it ever since I have owned it. Don't know what I can do to correct the mistake they made on my report. What could possibly have happened is someone else's car was damaged and by mistake my VIN got entered by whoever reported. Suggestions are requested.

I have a 2013 Tacoma Prerunner. The top was damaged when a limb fell on it from a storm. I turned the claim into USAA insurance and had the work done by Caliber Collision on Atlantic Blvd in Jacksonville, Florida. The truck was returned to me and looked great. After a while I decided to upgrade to a new Tacoma. Imagine my surprise when I was told the Carfax stated that the vehicle had "structural" damage and that this would lower the value by $5000. After researching this I can not determine whom stated it had that damage. The repair facility claims they had not stated structural damage and USAA also claims they did not. No one wishes to accept responsibility for this and I just have to "suck it up". Let me explain, that when I feel put upon by a large company that will not "do the right thing" I become very determined. Should this not be corrected in what I feel is a reasonable amount of time it will escalate.

I went to sell the truck to Dellenbach Chevrolet in Fort Collins, CO. They showed us that on Carfax that it shows that my truck has Structural Damage. I called ACE and they claimed there is no Structural damage and they do not ever report anything to Carfax. I called Geico and they claim that they never report anything to Carfax. I notified Carfax and they claim that an entry (in their view is structural damage).

I asked who reported this and they are not and will not let me know who reported it. I want to know to see who is lying or if the entry is being reported wrong. My truck is taking a hit of -$10k for Structural Damage. Both Geico & ACE swear that neither one reported! Carfax is holding information that I feel should be revealed to me because I am losing money from a sale on my truck that I don't feel I should not because of false reporting.

Until we brought it in as a trade in & were offered a 1/3 of its worth. Imagine our surprise when we were told the Jeep had two previous accidents & Carfax just started reporting them three months ago. The accidents happened back in 2013. I would have never made the purchase If the correct facts were reported. So, who regulates this dysfunctional company? Who is responsible for compensation against their negligence? I was signed up with their service. I paid their minimum of $75 each month, even though I didn't run that many reports. Then I received a bill for 35 additional carfax report for one month. REPORTS I NEVER RAN. I called them and they called me a liar. These reports were for sewer Camaros, Corvettes, etc. Cars that were not my type of inventory.

I had to make multiple calls and finally asked for the supervisor. She said she could clear it up as she found out what happened. Then she said she didn't believe that her staff called me a liar. "So now you are calling me a liar." Unbelievable! Their bread and butter is the car dealerships. Yet their commercials make car dealers look shady. They bite the hand that feeds them. They would let me cancel. I had to wait till it expired, then write them, and jump unnecessary hoops. On top of it, their reports are bogus. I am very happy with Autocheck. Thank you.

I was given notice that my Carfax report was updated and I decided to give it a look. I noticed several entries that were incorrect... Maintenance done and tire pressure checked in April 2018 at Ford dealer, mileage 65,201... Fast forward to November 2018, again I had service done at Ford dealer and mileage was 65,205, problem is my car was NOT at the dealer on those dates and did not have anything done by the dealer. I simply called about the airbag recall and somehow the dealer and Carfax turned that into false information. Hey, personally I don't mind all the "free" maintenance that shows up on my carfax report, but I would never EVER pay for a Carfax report as it is usually filled with wrong info.

We applied to refinance our Dodge Challenger SRT, limited edition Plum Crazy Purple through our credit union. The loan application was quick and easy, but then we got notified by the other credit union that the pay-off check did not go through. We then called our credit union and asked why the pay-off check (after being approved) did not go through. They said it was their policy not to approved red flagged cars on Carfax report. Well we read the report which flagged our car as "Severely damaged."

We then called the dealership, Colorado Springs Dodge and talked to the District Manager. He said that there were no severe damage to the car and faxed us a report they pull up from AutoCheck. He said the car had a little scrape, cost a $1000 to fix the rear quarter scratch/dent, but frame has been intact. He said the title is clean and that the dealership does not sell severely damaged cars. So due to this mistake on the Carfax report, we went through a lot of frustration and lost our refinancing. Of course I wrote to the credit union to tell them not to use Carfax!

When we tried to correct the error Carfax was of no help and we had to go out and try to find out where they got their information from. They do not have a phone number so you can not talk to a real person. I actually had to go on the internet to find out where this Bear Creek Township was where they said we had the accident. If you are buying a vehicle, selling one, or trading one in, do not believe the information you are given on their site. Beware of Carfax. You may not be given the correct information.

I spend my money for an inaccurate report. The whole basis of your business is to give car buyers pertinent and reliable information in order to make an informed decision when buying a car. I purchased the car based on your report. After I purchased the car I ran the free VIN report and it contained 5 RECALLS which CARFAX listed NONE and a service call for transmission issue. It's also is NOT on CARFAX. I had to replace the entire transmission within 3 weeks. After spending several thousands of dollars on a new transmission and rental car, CARFAX didn't think that was worthy of a $60 refund. If you going to sell information you need to make sure it's accurate. Furthermore CARFAX is the most expensive VIN check report and the least accurate. I'm very disappointed.

Fender had to be replaced because it was rippled slightly. No structural damage, all cosmetic. I got the correct information from the insurer and sent it to Carfax to have the damage amended to the correct amount. They actually argued that the report only showed scratches and no major damage even though I had it right in front of me. 2 days worth of e-mails and 'help is on the way" sent to me many times from them we are nowhere.

This is a useless organization and should be dealt with in the courts. I strongly suggest if you are having trouble with this company. I bought an expensive used truck in July of 2017 with a clean one owner perfect Carfax. I had some service work done on the truck in August of 2018 and decided I might be considering trading it in for a different Model A year later only to find out that on the Carfax report it showed that there was "damage" to the rear from some unlisted source reported in July 2017 only 3 days after I bought my truck! When discovering this of course I thought it was a mistake but CarFax said no that the company that reported it just began to report these incidents in April of 2018 and so basically I'm out of luck and the value of my truck is less because of this information.

Digging deeper I find out that they will not release the name of the reporting agency nor will they release the information of what was damaged. So as a consumer I am left with it no information on how I am supposed to address this issue. So the truck is valued at $5,000 less because of this information that I knew nothing about when I purchased it. I'm working with the dealership now, and I'm hoping that they will assist me and working through this problem.

But it's very frustrating and I think it's a scam for innocent consumers when they think they're buying something that is clear and find out later that they're going to be offered less money because now it's not clear somebody needs to hold responsibility for that or at least help the consumer find a way to find out what the information is so they have a better way of handling the issue when they turn it in as a trade in or sell it privately. This is very very dishonest and I feel ripped off! If CarFax is a creditable Company they need to assist the consumer not shut them down. This is how I feel that I am being handed. What rights does this consumer have?

Sept. 2018 ordered another single report and was billed for ($100). Made request and was refunded $60. This all came about because Carfax has you choose a single report but defaults to the most expensive without your knowledge. After putting in my credit card info, they then go to the billing page telling you what they charged to your card.

This causes the back & forth for a refund. On seeing this higher charge, I DID NOT hit the Order selection and initiated the refund request. They charged my card the $100. Received an email saying I had received one refund in Jan. and they only allow 1 a year per person or family. End result; no Carfax report. This smells like a scam and their billing sequence is backwards from any I've found on the net. All others have a "Cart" which shows what you've bought and the price; then ask for card info. Purchased truck April 6, 2018, 3 hrs. later and 198 miles, had a wreck. Exit ramp domino stop effect and I was last in line and could not stop. My bumper was bent and grill was cracked a bit. Being a new truck I reported on insurance and had OEM only parts replaced. Not a bad wreck at all. Well, several months later, entertained the idea of trading for a smaller truck. Dealership came back with an offer of half what the truck would be worth and said it had a Carfax of "severe accident" against it. After researching into the issue, Carfax took the police report as factual. The officer put "Major damage" on the accident report. I've been back and forth with this now for several weeks. The police report is an opinion of the officer filling out the report and not facts, (it states this on the report). Carfax says if I get the officer to change his report they would change theirs for my truck. Of course that isn't going to happen...

Too many dealerships and people in general rely on this information and wrong info has cost me 25K in depreciation on a 2018 truck worth 50k. That's stealing in my book, or as Carfax would use as accurate, an "OPINION." Where can a person start as to try to stop this inaccurate info and make a difference to the auto buying world. I have documentation re: accident from repair shop listing no structural damage. So four years later we are trading this car in on a new car. The Carfax came up reporting structural damage.

The dealership which was offering us a good trade in allowance pulled their deal and would not take our car in trade. So this leaves us with monetary damage. MY PROBLEM IS THE SAME AS MANY PEOPLE REPORTED SO BEWARE!! CARFAX ARE SCAM ARTISTS!! I can just cut and paste others complaints because my situation is almost IDENTICAL!! I only needed 1 report put on MY car which I want to sell. Same as others, I very clearly clicked the 1 report button for $39.99. Credit card authorization came through at $104.99. Contacted them through website (they curiously have no phone number for consumers) and I tried calling the phone # for Dealers (1-888-788-7715) and was told they can't handle it. It's only for dealers, use live-chat or email option (nobody answers either!!).

Amazingly the charge posted on my account the right away. Nothing ever goes from authorization to post that fast. Sent a second more heated complaint through website and got a "we're on it reply". Disputed the charge through my credit card company. 4 days out and nothing has happened. Beware! They can say you clicked button you did not click and rip you off for $65 (or more). Will update this post if this resolves. In the meantime, I'm going to start going to every social media available to warn consumers!!!

I have tried to get the Carfax report corrected for my vehicle without any success. They claim according to their 'source' there was damage to my vehicle and it had to be towed. This never ever happened. This car has never been in any accident or damaged or towed. I tried to tell them this but they kept insisting that their source has reported this. I had Geico issue a letter stating there were no claims filed for that specific date. Carfax's response to that was that not all accidents are reported to the insurance company. I told them to tell me who reported this so that I can follow up with them and try to investigate this apparent incident and that as an owner of this vehicle I have the right to know who incorrectly reported this damage and tow on it. They did not even bother replying after that. After first two emails they stopped responding to my emails altogether.

This is very frustrating and not being able to talk to someone on the phone makes it even worse. I read in one of the prior complaints that I can file a complaint with the small claims court. I will contact my attorney and do just that now. I wish there was a way to put this stupid company out of business for not verifying their sources and false reporting.

CARFAX reported that there was structural damage done to my vehicle from an accident. This is completely false information as there was zero damage to the frame or unibody of my vehicle yet they still incorrectly reported this as an issue with my vehicle. I did not know until last week when it was pointed out to me by someone interested in my car. I have been trying to sell this vehicle for over a month unaware that CARFAX had done this and consequently I have lowered the price of my vehicle by $3k because I was getting very little responses which I blame on CARFAX incorrectly listing damages to my vehicle. I will lose $3k from selling my vehicle which is how much below the value Edmunds and Kelley Blue Book suggests the car is worth based on the features and condition of my vehicle.

I have sent them several emails, called and tried to get help via chat and they have never responded. They report false information and when the I repeatedly tried to contact them to get that information corrected with documentation including a letter from the repair facility, a complete report of the work done that does not show any frame or unibody damages, photos of the damage to my vehicle and a police report they still will not respond. If you have this happen to you take them to small claims court and you will win if you can provide the proper documentation. It is a fairly simple process to file your complaint with your local county court and very inexpensive as well.

I purchased a vehicle from an auction. The auction uses Auto Check. Auto Check reported no fraudulent activity, so they did not announce anything about mileage discrepancy. The National Insurance Crime Bureau (NICB) also listed nothing fraudulent. CARFAX, however, listed mileage rollback fraud. The issue was that whoever did the inspection in January 2016 input the wrong mileage. Anyone with a brain can see that this was a simple human error and nothing fraudulent. Why would anyone roll the odometer forward from 85k miles to 178k miles back to 85k miles? CARFAX notes this as odometer fraud preventing me from selling my vehicle for the fair market price.

I tried to contact CARFAX and the only phone number listed is the dealer account customer service number. I called because this does have something to do with dealer issues. The man was rude. Once I told him I was working through a dealership but had no account with CARFAX he got completely rude and impatient with me. He impatiently asked if I was on a computer.

Then he told me I had to chat with the online chat help, but they probably would not be able to help me either and then he hung up the phone. I go the chat route and the person on there is no real help. She says I have to fill out a data research form and then someone will contact me within 10-15 business days. This is costing me several hundred dollars! I want to sell this vehicle now. I have a buyer now. The buyer doesn't want to pay my asking price (which is actually lower than any rough book price), because he won't be able to retail it on his lot because of the fraudulent report on CARFAX.

CARFAX is not the be all, end all of vehicle reports. It is frequently WRONG! They need to seriously consider making some changes to their business model, or maybe the algorithm that's used to create these reports. Plus, get a phone line to help people. Help people in a timely manner. No one wants to wait weeks to fix something that can be done in 5 minutes. The online chat person said that they have a lot of discrepancies to work through and can't decide who's more important, so they don't expedite anything. Here's a thought... Don't screw up so much. Your workload will be much less! DON'T TRUST CARFAX. THEY MAKE TOO MANY ERRORS. SO ANNOYED and FRUSTRATED.

I contact Carfax by email because that's the only way to communicate with them. I was informed that they got their information from a police report. I asked for a copy in which they stated they didn't have and needed me to get a copy and send to them before the correction could be made. They stated that the information from my insurance company wasn't good enough.

I purchased Carfax before I bought a vehicle a few years ago. I ran a number of vehicles through before I found one I was willing to take a chance on. What a mistake. I travelled a long distance for the vehicle and ended up purchasing it. Much to my chagrin, the title had been salvaged in Ohio. The truck purchased by a used car dealer in Michigan who posed as an independent party on Craigslist. The title was not a salvage title in Michigan. The frame was badly rusted.

Almost one year to date of purchase the rear axle de-attached from frame while travelling on Interstate 90 in rush hour traffic, far left lane, on blind curve. I managed to cut across four lanes of traffic and park on shoulder where I heard a second noise. Upon inspection, discovered axle had indeed broken free of frame and drive shaft falling off was second noise. Very fortunate that God was with me and no injuries or damage to other vehicles occurred. But this situation should have been prevented if Carfax had really done their job. The first week of owning the vehicle I began to experience problems with my 2008 Lexus IS 250. Expenses: Price for Vehicle : $ 23,333.00. Dec 31, 2014 battery was bad after first week of purchase - Jan free warranty at Holler. Water pump failed - July 650.00. Then loose ground would not start 95.00 diagnosis + towing 200.00.

2016 axle failed 1,200.00, radiator began to leak, radiator leaking again 2 months later. Brought vehicle to the manufacturer dealership to be inspected. I indicated I wanted to know why radiator failed again so soon, because I suspected foul play. Turns out the front bumper was not the original and the cross member had been damaged in the undisclosed wreck. Sadly it took all this time for the right mechanic to find the culprit to the abnormal amount of trouble I had experienced.

The Carfax report said the original owner purchased the car in New York but the key fob had an engraved "Lexus of Orlando" keychain on it. The purchase was at Holler Honda and no spare key was provided. If the owner came from New York then why was there no key fob from "Lexus of Massapequa"? The vehicle had the title cleaned in New York but could have come from anywhere then rekeyed at Lexus of Orlando. Point is that the reason I couldn't close the hood again after opening it for the first time is because the cross member portion of the frame had been bent well around 6 inches out of alignment. This caused the entire slew of problems and expenses to follow. All this due to purchasing a vehicle with a falsified clean Carfax report. No accident history ever recorded.

I purchased this vehicle with my inheritance after my parents passed away while I was in college. Now I have no vehicle and very little trade in value to purchase another one. I thought I was purchasing a luxury version of the reliable Toyota Camry family of vehicles. I feel taken advantage of, had to take time off of work, and drain my accounts and learn a valuable lesson. I was misled by the dealership for not inspecting their product and UNRELIABLE MISLEADING Carfax Report lying to consumers about their credibility to determine a cars value.

Today the vehicle sits at Lexus with a $7,000.00 Invoice in repairs that are not worth fixing. Frankly the car is totaled because they only offered me $5,500.00 to trade it in for something else. The average cost of depreciation to own this vehicle according to NADA reports is 3,033.00 per year. This salvage title vehicle cost me well over this amount per year in depreciation value. Not including the expenses I had to pay in repairs. Disheartening to say the least.

This company is worse than the credit reporting companies (that are regulated by the government) in costing consumers' money. I am petitioning my Congressman and Senators to regulate this business, because it does not distinguish between a major total loss accident, and a small fender bender parking lot accident. But I found out the warranty was expired in Feb, 2017 since the car was register in Feb, 2013. In addition, there is recall to the car but the car dealer provided me a no-recall report to be confirmed. So obviously, Carfax did not even verify the information with VIN for the date of the vehicle at all. It cannot be mistaken about the date of the registered date of the car. Where was the car before December 2013 though? I felt very disappointed and am thinking of how to claim for my right to have Carfax to fix their mistake.

I went to trade my Lexus which I purchased as the second owner from original Lexus dealer I was offered $2k less on trade in due to accident from original owner. Interesting on bottom page 2/5 one line one word accident. On top page 3/5 one line one word damage. Then full line with a new record car re-registered 07/05/11, next line 07/02/12 re-registered, next line re-registered 07/07/13 then dealer inventory with next incident registered to new owner!

I called Lexus Financial Services and opened a case for my claim of $2k. I was told one owner car no accidents. Apparently someone was being cute with a paper cutter. The dealer I traded it in with will provide me with a letter to the decrease in value. Not to beat a dead horse, the car shows two services at Nalley Lexus in Atlanta then a front impact no airbag deployed in Florida followed by more service history from Nalley Lexus.

"Funny", being facetious, not really but strange because I don't recall any incident out of state! I also didn't appreciate the Scanlon Lexus the selling dealer not reporting that I had the timing belt replaced nor any brake resurfacing rotors and pad replacement. Lexus should compensate me the $2k and Carfax owes me for damages $2k as well. I have owned many Lexus models from LS 400s, a 93 & 97, SC430 hardtop convertible, ES 330 and ES350. So far my dealings with BMW Financial Services has been excellent; with a great credit rating, I was approved and set up in less than literally 2 minutes. I was hoping Carfax would make the car buying process safer and easier by helping me to make a more informed decision about which car to purchase. Instead, I was ripped-off. I paid to be supplied with misinformation. Bad intel. When I asked for a refund, I was told "This account does not qualify for a refund as two or more reports have been ran." This is CARFAX saying "It took you three times to realize you were being fooled, so now we keep your money!" The CARFAX representative that responded was sarcastic and misspelled words.

I four reports. Three reports were vehicles I was interested in purchasing. I ran a report on a car I owned to test the reliability of the reports. One report failed to mention the car was branded "salvage." Next to the box where the report shows if the car was salvaged it says "GUARANTEED (in bright green) No Problem." A clear green light that this car is a smart choice. Another report for a different vehicle claimed the vehicle was branded "Exceeds mechanical limits" because it experiences "odometer rollover." It went on to say "Rollovers occur on vehicles with 5-digit odometers. They return to reading 00,000 once they hit 100,000." Five digit odometers are a thing of the past. This car was a 2010. This information was incorrect.

The other two reports may contain incorrect or missing information. I don't know. I can't verify what's on them. I do know, that for free, the California DMV helped more than CARFAX. I called on each of the vehicles I obtained reports on to ensure there were no "back fees" owned on them. The individual attempting to register the car (new owner) will have to pay the back fees. If you buy a car with back fees, then attempt to register it, the DMV won't allow it unless you pay the back fees that are owned. One vehicle, the DMV operator warned, DIDNT have a title. The gentlemen who was selling the vehicle CLAIMED he had a title, but the DMV representative told me the car didn't and advised me not to purchase a vehicle without a title because the process to obtain one can be tedious and expensive.

We put our loved ones and cherish pets in our cars. How is a 50% the information is reliable acceptable? What's more, on consumeraffairs.com CARFAX has over 500 complaints AND a one star rating. Yet, it's BBB accredited?!?! CARFAX will buy the vehicle if the report is found to be wrong, yet they won't provide a measly $100 refund for the same reason?!?

This is the same as so many stories here: We purchased a used vehicle a little over 3 years ago from a dealer which included a clean 1-owner Carfax report. We recently started shopping around for something bigger to replace our "one-owner, clean Carfax" car. The first dealer we went to made a reasonable offer on our car, but we couldn't find anything we liked to trade it on. A few months later, we finally found something we liked, but when that dealer valued our trade, they offered us $1000 LESS than Dealer #1 did a few months back - and said that the Carfax report showed out "Accident-Free" car had indeed been in an accident. I still had the original Carfax from when we bought it in the glovebox, so we compared the two - and a month before we went to Dealer #2, Carfax had added an accident to the car's report... FIVE YEARS after it apparently originally happened... Which was YEARS before we bought it.

So - not only did we pay more for a Carfax certified "accident-free" car that actually had been in an accident, but we also got a 1000 less at trade in time because their information was inaccurate. By trusting Carfax, we paid too much when we bought it, and got less than expected when we traded it. Maybe it isn't a perfect system, but is it better than nothing?? Actually, no - a Carfax is WORSE than not having a report at all, because an incorrect Carfax means you pay a premium, but actually have no more assurance than you do taking the previous owner's word on the car's history. And it can ONLY work against you... I highly doubt there has ever been (or will ever be) a situation where someone got a smokin' deal on a Carfax accident car, only to have Carfax determine years later that it is actually squeaky-clean and suddenly worth thousands more... If you wanna pay for a Carfax, go bonkers - but trust the info at your own risk.

Repeatedly, we have been met by this generic response by CARFAX: "We do not provide any personal information on the reports. Your name, mailing address or any personal information about yourself would not appear on the report. CARFAX Reports provide valuable information which helps used car buyers and sellers make better decisions and helps to keep safer cars on the public roadways."

Contrary to the above statement, CARFAX knowingly and actively solicits partnerships with agencies who link the CARFAX report to owner/registrant information. This backdoor linking with insurance companies, car dealerships, and service departments(...) trespasses on our right to privacy. CARFAX does this under the guise of protecting even allegorical buyers for vehicles that are not for sale. This practice should be illegal. CARFAX reports should be limited to owner/registrant requests. Let the buyer request the report and the owner choose to oblige or lose the sale. This says nothing of the billions lost due to incorrect or incomplete information garnered and published by CARFAX. Here even the buyer should beware. Later on when I was replacing a car with high miles and went to Carmax for their quote, they claimed it was in several accidents and used that to justify a $750 offer on a car which was NADA guide priced at $2500-2900 trade in value. A nudge requiring NO REPAIRS should not be knocking the value down of a car several thousand dollars. I then paid for a Carfax report and found a bunch of inaccuracies on it. Carfax claimed two front end collisions (no repairs needed, however I did need to replace the license plate holder...), and a significant amount of maintenance at a dealership that I never went to. There needs to be some liability on their lack of accurate information, their refusal to correct any errors, and compensation to the consumers who lost money on the resale of good cars because of the erroneous reports. It would be interesting to have their reports audited for accuracy.

In shopping for my new car, I quickly used up the 5 reports and was then required to look up reports by license plate number. As all of the cars that I am looking at are through dealers, I don't have license plate numbers, so the service is worthless to me. I realize that I should have read more carefully, but I would like to make other buyers aware so that they don't get caught in this same trap.

Purchased used car in February 2016. It's been a month now and I still haven't been able to drive the car. No tail lights. White smoke pouring out of the back tailpipe pipe all the time. I mentioned the white smoke coming out of a tailpipe day one. Used car lot said that was typical, all cars smoke. Two days later check engine light, came on. Meanwhile, tail light driver side still out. Took it back to use car lot. They said they'd fix the light. They made three attempts and on those three attempts one of the guys at the used car lot was saying that he could fix everything for me, "baby just go out with me" and mentioned a lot of other sexual graphic things. I'm appalled. I'm pissed off and I still don't have a working vehicle and I lost a job over it because I miss so much time.

It was a used, as is, no warranty vehicle, cash only which I paid over 5000 cash for. It took it to 3 places, had it diagnosed O2 sensor and it needs valve guides intake manifold and that's just what they uncovered from the diagnostic. Used car place said "bring it back. I'll send it to my mechanic. Will get rid of the white smoke but you have to take care of the tail light. Will give you a loaner car for 2 days." I had originally said give me my money back. "I will give you your car back" they said. Here's the deal. You got an estimate for $2,500 + to fix the white smoke with check engine light O2 sensor. Those kind of places are all about money. He said "I don't trust them." Well the place I took it to was a certified Mini Cooper mechanic in business for 35 years. Sorry but I do trust them and not the used car place. Plus I really don't want to have to deal with all the sexual BS that I know that I'm going to come up against.

I tried to record him but my memory was full on my phone. I tell you this because just because you buy used car, as is, no warranty, used cars are not protected under the lemon law. There is still legal recourse. If they knowingly sold you a car that had problems, it's fraud and you can sue them for fraud. I've purchased all of the warranty problems with the car and these issues existed and previous owner declined to have work done and just sold it. Used car place picked it up, cleaned it up, and they just put in their lot. Of course they had a CARFAX report that they gave me when I got the used car. The Carfax report or worthless Carfax reports are only as good as what the dealer and the insurance companies report. To them if someone takes it to an individual mechanic they don't report all those issues. Therefore it doesn't go on the CARFAX report.

So CARFAX sucks and so does Mini Cooper S I and I have three different diagnosis on the vehicle. I've talked to so many certified Cooper mechanics in a dealer of many and they all say the same thing. White smoke coming out the back all the time. Get rid of it. These cars are very finicky and they are costly to fix. What a mess, what a big big mess. To be continued. I'm sure taking the car back to the used car place to let them attempt to fix the white smoke, that'll be a whole other story. I'm sure I'm contacting all the news media if they don't get it fixed. I don't trust them. They couldn't even fix a tail light, how the hell are they supposed to fix something major. But what choice do I have. I don't have any money left and I lost my job over all this mess and more sexual crap to endure.

I used Carfax many years ago when there were few competing options. They had a subscription that allowed for unlimited searches for 30 days. I was happy with it back then. Today, I started car shopping, so I went to the Carfax website and saw they offer only 5 VIN searches for $49.95. That seemed pretty limiting, so I jumped at their offer of UNLIMITED searches for only $5 more! I signed up for the $54.95 subscription. When I logged in to use my subscription for the first time, it said that I have only 5 VIN searches. I thought they made a mistake. It was then that I found that the UNLIMITED searches for using license plate numbers only. That doesn't work at dealers who usually don't have license plates on their cars.

It is my fault because I did not read the finest of the fine print. Buyer beware! They did their legal part to warn me. I accept my responsibility. However, the advertising and wording on the sales page is clearly meant to dupe the shopper into spending more money. It is misleading and unethical. I hope that extra $5 was worth it to them to lose me as a future user along with the fact that I will ACTIVELY try to lead other people away from using Carfax. NOT RECOMMENDED. I went to DCH Honda in Paramus, NJ last week to buy a car. I was offered much less for my old car which I wanted to trade in ( less than even than the blue book value,) since they told me they could not verify my mileage. The dealer produced a Carfax that seemed to be saying that my auto mechanic fiddled with the mileage several times. I have been going to my mechanic for a long time and they were recommended to me. Not having confronted a report like this before, I went along and took the lower offering. The report, at the end of the chronological time it covered, did reflect the proper mileage in my car, but the dealer was unmoved.

Today I went to my mechanic to have the car inspected (I live in another state), and I brought the dealer's Carfax report showing the times the mileage seemed to be entered into the database incorrectly, as though they were trying to depress the mileage, and I asked about it. Here's what he said: that they have dealt with this a few times, and wished I called from the dealership when I was buying last week, that he could have faxed over the invoices showing correct mileage taken each time, that there is a LAWSUIT against Carfax by 120 dealers and car shops, because they accessed an area or region's auto association's data illegally, and that because it was not pulled properly the numbers came out incorrectly. So, I wonder if the dealership knew that the report was incorrect, and that gave them a bargaining tool. I'm copying the attorney general in NJ, with all the documentation, and asking them to take a look.

I've never written a formal complaint about anything. Unfortunately, this issue gave me such a headache that it needs to be addressed. Carfax misleading advertisement on their website duped me into purchasing a subscription service that fail to deliver its intended purpose. Customers have the option to purchase 1 Report ($39.95), 5 Reports ($49.99), or Unlimited Reports ($54.99). What Carfax fail to make clear is that after they pull 5 reports using the Unlimited Reports subscription, customers can only pull the reports using the car's license plate number NOT the VIN number. The problem with this is that car dealers do not put a license plate on every one of their cars and most private sellers do not like to give out their own license plate number.

Carfax Unlimited Reports service completely defeats the purpose of having the VIN number. While the website attempts to disclose "Unlimited Reports by License Plate" in fine prints, the advertisement layout sets up the expectation that if customers pay more, they will be able to access more reports. Not when you can only use the license plate number! I constantly have to call and get the license plate number, often to no avail. I used a Carfax report to gain information related to Ford Windstar I was considering buying. The report clearly states that there were no recalls on the vehicle and that Carfax receives information on safety recalls for "individual vehicles" from Ford. Given the clean bill of health given my car by Carfax and the assumption that if this vehicle had any recalls they would have been noted I bought the vehicle to find out a few weeks later that it was part of a massive recall. Three auto mechanic professionals including the shop foreman at the local dealer judged the car unsafe to drive if repairs weren't made to complete or redo the work originally done as part of a recall.

After extensive correspondence with Ford I have documented evidence that Ford does NOT give Carfax the VIN numbers of individual vehicles involved in safety recalls. Therefore, Carfax's claim is fraudulent. And, their exemptions, exclusions and other legalese in their purchase agreement clearly states in the fine print that they are not responsible for anything they say, do or write either deliberately or through negligence so there is absolutely no recourse to recover from their fraudulent reporting. In short, a Carfax report is not worth the paper on which it's printed and, in fact, it's better to never see one so as not to be led astray by these snake oil salesmen.

It was in an accident the day after it was purchased. Carfax states that the mileage is probably wrong! OH REALLY? Just how many miles could it have been driven by the next day when it was purchased brand new with 11 miles. The Carfax suggests that the car was totaled as salvage junk. Reason and logic dictates that if a car (or boat or plane) is totaled, then it means that it would cost more to properly repair it than it could possibly be sold for, right? My car looks and drive like new, so how could that be? The model I have must have the right fender replaced/(removed) to install a new battery.

So if that fender had a bad parking lot dent and the owner decided to repair it while the battery was being replaced by an authorized factory dealer, a Carfax would then give it the kiss of death as a damaged or wrecked car regardless of the fact that the work was done with OEM parts and authorized dealer craftsmen. WHAT **! I wish the reader could see my beautiful Saturn Sky Special edition turbo. There is not a trace of sand or dirt on the carpets. Never been smoked in. Yes, this truck has been in (2) incidents. (1) hit a post in a campground and cracked the dually wheel well - taken straight to a dealership and replaced-no other damage was done. (2nd) deer hit straight on the grille/headlight. Again no other damage was done and taken to the dealership for repairs. On the incident with the deer - the radiator/engine/nor the frame was not affected - very minimal damage. Both incidents were repaired by a dealership and has the paperwork to prove it.

According to Nada and KBB - in reality this 2007 GMC Sierra 3500 is worth anywhere from $17,000.00 to $23,000.00 from poor condition to excellent condition. October, 2012 I purchased a 2007 Infiniti G35X from a dealership in Lexington, KY. I was in Indiana so the transaction was basically done over the phone. I asked for the VIN# and when received it looked it up on Carfax. The title was clean and it showed clear title "no accidents". I found out that the car originated in New York, then went to New Jersey and was sold via an auction in Pennsylvania. I have not had any "costly" problems with the car - just the usual - new tires, brakes, etc. and it only has 74,000 miles on it now.

About 1 month ago I decided that I wanted to trade up for a newer Infiniti. I approached a dealership and was interested in a trade. They asked for my VIN# and I gave it to them. Within an hour they called me saying that since the car had been "totaled" they were not interested in a trade. I was totally floored, not understanding what they were telling me. I got on Carfax, paid the fee to look up my VIN#. Again, I purchased the car in October, 2012. There was a notation in December 2012 that the car had been classified as a "total loss" back in September of 2007.

How does a car get totaled in 2007, the insurance company reports it as a "total loss" but it does not show up on the Carfax report until December 2012 - two months after I had purchased the car? Even if the dealer (which has since closed - and they had very bad reviews) did give me a wrong VIN# that basically matched my car to cover up the fact that the car I purchased was considered a "total loss". The information on the loss was not revealed until 2 months after I purchased the car on Carfax.

I know there are corrupt dealerships (and Kar Smart in Lexington, KY is (was) definitely one of them) but Carfax didn't do anyone any favor either. If the information had been posted back in 2007 when the car was totaled - I would have never seen it and would not be "trapped" with a car that I will lose all the equity that I put in it and more. I tried to contact someone with Carfax - that is also impossible, they don't want to be found. The next car I purchase (if I can ever afford one again), I don't know who I will be able to trust - Carfax, definitely not all that they say they are.

When there is an accident, the jurisdiction in which your accident was in sends your crash report to TxDOT. Also, when you have your vehicle serviced; if it is a reputable place they also report your info to TxDOT. TxDOT then turns around and from what I understand SELLS your VIN information to Carfax... So if a person (such as in my case - the police officer) checks the wrong box, makes incorrect assumptions or just plain makes a mistake like humans often do, well then you're screwed. Carfax is deceitful. Don't waste your $55 on "UNLIMITED CARFAX REPORTS" searches because they still limit you to only 5 searches using the VIN number. They should tell you before you pay $55 for their "unlimited" plan that the license plate searches do not provide the same information as the VIN searches. They should disclose that the "license plate" searches ONLY reports vehicle maintenance history and mileage but does not report the most important information such as liens and title status WHICH IS THE MAIN REASON WHY ANYONE WOULD USE CARFAX IN THE FIRST PLACE!!!

Sure, it's nice to know when the car got an oil change but it is much more important to verify that the car was not in a serious accident and was not salvaged, etc. I am certain I am not the only person that assumed that the license plate search provide the same information as the VIN search before giving them my credit card for $55. You get the same number of VIN searches for THEIR $50 "5 CARFAX REPORTS" plan as you do for their $55 "UNLIMITED CARFAX REPORTS" plan. So save $5 and buy the $50 plan. And keep in mind that Carfax is deceitful (even though they are endorsed by the DMV which has a link to Carfax)!!!

I said I have the report and specifically asked if it had been in an accident and the dealer said no and it's not on the report. I have made several complaints about the dealer and CarFax even to the local Chamber of Commerce. HOW CAN CARFAX MISS SUCH A HUGE ACCIDENT???? By the way I have HARD evidence now as the repaint job is peeling in a couple places. I even bought a second report a year later to see if it showed up then but it did not. I didn't even own that vehicle in 2012. The vehicle I DID wreck was a rental & it was totaled. So, there was absolutely no way the two cars were the same vehicle. I could be out thousands of dollars due to a fraudulent Carfax. No recourse and no way to get a hold of anyone. Carfax is a scam where they sell unverified information and try to pass it off as verified and accurate. I am planning to buy an old Mercedes from a private seller. To cover my bases, I had the car examined by a trusted mechanic, took it for a drive on two different dates and -- finally -- ordered a Carfax report. What I found was shocking. This Mercedes has about 90,000 miles on it... but Carfax said it has 177,399 miles. I was blown away. There was no record of the odometer being messed with, but the numbers were appallingly different. I notified the seller and spent the rest of the afternoon trying to determine how Carfax collects mileage information. I'm a journalist and a skilled researcher, but I never could find an answer.

So I decided to order a Carfax report on my own car. I know its mileage. I've been the sole owner since 2005. And Carfax showed my car having about 50,000 more mileage than it actually does. The only thing I can imagine is that Carfax estimates mileage based on past reports. If you put 15,000 miles on a car the first year and there are no other records of the mileage, it must assume you put 15,000 more miles on it every succeeding year. So if your car is 10 years old, as mine is, it assumes it has 150,000 miles on it ... even though for the past few years I've worked from home and put on very few miles.

The thing is, I don't know what to do now. I've demonstrated with my car that Carfax's mileage reports can be way off, but are they way off all the time? I have no way of knowing if they're correct about the mileage on the Mercedes I'm thinking about buying, and while I think they're wrong, if I go through with the purchase I will now always have a niggling fear that I got scammed.

So while I'm not looking to trade cars now, I have protested this with CARFAX, and after data research on their part, they say their records are correct, they will not remove the accident, and will provide no more details on the accident. I even sent them a sworn Affidavit that the car had not been in an accident.

They don't care. It's like dealing with the IRS. Seems they are accountable to no one. The Scion only had 74,000 miles on it and according to Kelley Blue Book was worth $7033.00. When the dealership ran the Carfax report it showed one accident, which cut the value of the car by half according to their system. I had the Kelley Blue Book print-out from home and had brought it with me to show the dealership. The Scion had been a very minor collision. My wife accidentally pulled up too close to an automatic gate which opened outwards, (unknown to her), and poked a hole in the front fascia of this vehicle.

Before repair we contacted Toyota to locate an ICAR/Toyota Certified Repair shop in our area. This is where the vehicle was taken for repair. A factory fascia was ordered and used for the repair, the vehicle was then painted and returned to factory specs. This was the only accident ever reported on this vehicle, and it was properly repaired, bottom line this type of repair should NOT have affected the KBB price as this was a minor repair issue.

Carfax is causing people who take care of their vehicles to lose major amounts of equity in their vehicles to the point of being almost worthless. This needs to stop, and reporting systems like Carfax need to be heavily regulated. Carfax does not get to decide what any vehicle is worth, and that is exactly what is happening here. As I have done a little research on this, there are no laws at this juncture that require the vehicles to be reported to Carfax, and moreover Carfax should not be judging vehicles site unseen, (again which is exactly what they are doing).

It turns out, you only get unlimited lookups by license plates. As most people will tell you, that is worthless when trying to buy a used car. If you are checking dealers, there will be no license plate. If you're trying to buy from an individual, they almost always obscure the plate or remove it so that no one will have personal info about them.

Carfax makes no differentiation about the reports and most people don't even know about the license plate lookup. When users think of running a Carfax on a car, they think of entering the VIN number to ensure the exact car is being used. When you see unlimited Carfaxes, that's what you assume you'll receive. I went to Carfax first, and they refused to help. I then went to Paypal, which for the frequency they espouse their advocacy for the consumer, was zero help. You can find the information if you do a very thorough search, but it's not as obvious as the "unlimited" add. Since dealers don't put tags on vehicles the "unlimited" package is mostly a waste of $5. It seems a little picky to me since the information is already in their database. Why not just make the package "unlimited"? Anyway, since I've paid my $5 I have 60 days to pull Carfax reports. Normally I'd stop when I purchase a vehicle, but since Carfax feels it ok to fool me I guess I'll just pull 60 days of random reports so I feel like I got my $5 value. First Carfax reported my Porsche Carrera 911 had a salvaged title. It did NOT. I had my ONE AND ONLY CLEAN TITLE IN HAND. I contacted DMV. DMV said internally DMV mismarked paperwork and a title... though before the title was ever sent to me DMV fixed it and sent me only one title which is the clean title I have. I then had to battle it out with Carfax as they "looked into it" as the Carfax said my car was "Salvaged." So, I wanted to sell my car and could not due to the "Salvaged" title by Carfax. Again, even though I had a clean title in hand.

This took way too long for Carfax to clear up and I could not sell the car during it obviously. Even when the internal DMV mistake was seen to be the cause of this wrong branding... Carfax will still NOT remove the Salvaged notation. Carfax says though it was in an internally DMV error of which I never knew about nor needed to know about... and despite I was sent the only title I knew about from the DMV which is clean... though. "This Salvaged title" is now listed as in "error." Of course this causes MAJOR doubt to a buyer whether my car is indeed a perfect car or has some salvage issue. This notation should have been erased COMPLETELY. Now, as if Carfax hasn't messed with my car and its value enough... wait... there's more to come.

THEN, a few weeks later, Carfax puts down that my car was in an accident. My car has never even had even a fly land on it. I contact Carfax, get generic responses back. I have to sell the car for another business dealing at this point I need money for. The Porsche has only about 6500 miles on it and is perfect. Nonetheless with the "salvage" title notation and now this current "accident" on it, I have to sell the car to a dealer for a considerable amount less. Meanwhile, everyone who sees the car loves it but thinks I am lying and dishonest about it NEVER being in an accident. This causes great financial loss in the forced resale. But, I cannot wait any longer.

As a matter of principle, I battle it out with Carfax for THREE MORE MONTHS through numerous emails. You can't call or reach anybody of course. Then, all of a sudden I get an email from Carfax last week that basically said, "Oops, the information was wrong, your car has never been in an accident." Then, through email, they try to tell me what book is, how it has done me no financial harm and say for my "inconvenience" they are giving me a "free" 60 Carfax link to my car's report. ARE YOU KIDDING ME? A free report after they totally made me look like a liar to buyers, caused great harm to my word and the car's condition? Even if they want to argue about book value. Hello? Book value falls quarterly and Carfax took three months to fixed the wrong Carfax created thus causing financial harm and loss over the last quarter.

There needs to be a class action suits against Carfax on behalf of individual consumers. I see only there appears to be a class action suit by dealers against Carfax. Carfax claims they are a guide. That is fine. However, when you are messing with extreme values of people's cars with bad information that is not IMMEDIATELY verifiable with copies of where the information came from, Carfax needs to be held financially liable.

Carfax needs to be put under a microscope. Carfax should not be allowed to add to a car's report without IMMEDIATE proof they can send the consumer of where the reported information came from. Again, in my case, Carfax kept saying they "think" it came from the police but weren't sure. What an appalling and disgusting business practice not doing any of us any good. VERIFY your sources with more than one source Carfax and have IMMEDIATE proof of the incident to send the consumer.

DO NOT PURCHASE CARFAX Unlimited Reports. The CARFAX website is misleading at best and pure deception at worst. Unlimited in bold on the selection right after the 1 and 5 VIN search options DOES NOT give you unlimited VIN searches, only unlimited plate searches which is absolutely pointless for anybody searching smaller dealer lots or even large dealers after hours and weekends. CARFAX at one time years ago did have an unlimited VIN search option and I had used it. Now they deceive you into purchasing an essentially worthless product for $55. I mean really, 5 VIN searches when you're looking for a car. Ridiculous. I have complained to CARFAX and demanded a refund or unlimited VIN searches. I will also write complaints to the BBB and the Texas Attorney General's office for what are deceptive trade practices.

I bought a car in 2007, relying on the Carfax report based on their claims for accuracy & thoroughness and based on their buy-back guarantee should their report be inaccurate. In 2009, they started reporting an accident that supposedly occurred in 1998. They had 9 years to collect info for my report but failed (assuming its even accurate).

Turns out, all their advertised claims are false. By purchasing a report, you also have to agree to waive your rights to claims against them - so BEWARE. As with others on this site, customer service is nearly non-existent. Carfax has no obligation to anyone to report accurately or to correct bad information. By their own admission, they have no obligation or make attempts to be thorough in their data gathering efforts. They gather whatever is cheap & easy under the false promise of standing behind their product and if you get screwed - oh well.

I'm looking for a good quality used car. So I signed up for Carfax 60 days of unlimited carfax reports, for $54.99. When I started using it, it stated I only have 5 free reports. The unlimited portion was for running license plates, which only gives the year/vin# to which that plate is assigned. WHAT GOOD DOES THAT DO ME AS A CONSUMER LOOKING FOR A HISTORY REPORT OF THE CAR?? I emailed their customer service, and have not heard back. Never again will I use carfax.

Carfax somehow decides it wants to wait 2 years later to show it in their records. Because of Carfax I'm stuck with this SUV that I don't want!

I went to buy a Mazdaspeed 3. I have wanted the car for a long time. I was excited to find a 2013 model with only 8,600 miles on it and in stock condition at a fair price. The CARFAX was clean in all areas. I drove the car for 2 months totaling less than 3,000 miles and the CEL came on and the car lost power. I called Mazda customer service and they began to tell me the Powertrain Warranty on that VIN was branded. That basically means a Mazda dealer said at one point there modifications done to the car that caused a mechanical failure so they would no longer warranty anything on the Powertrain. Supposedly this was done at a dealership in Illinois. The CARFAX doesn't even show the car ever being in Illinois.

I called the dealership in Illinois and they said they showed my car being there in July of 2014 for a dent repair in the door and paint touchup, but nothing about any warranty work or anything about branding the warranty. Again, nothing on the CARFAX about anything in Illinois. I called Mazda customer service back and they were fairly helpful. After about 20 minutes or so the women offered to find out more about the branding from the dealer and also offered to have the vehicle towed the nearest Mazda dealership. She said if they could confirm the car is in stock configuration now that they would likely lift the branding from the warranty and cover the repairs.

This was the best news I had heard in a few days, but the fact remains that if the CARFAX would have had all this information I never would have purchased the vehicle in the first place. Now I paid fair market value for a car that has a questionable past and I am uncertain how reliable it will be. Bottom line is that CARFAX sucks. The information is not complete and car dealers push it as an end all be all source of information about your vehicle and their customer service is non-existent. This company needs a serious wake up call.

Everyone should be aware that the "Unlimited CarFax Reports" actually has no benefit to those shopping at Dealers... they still only "give" you 5 searches, but charge you an extra 10% so you can do unlimited License Plate searches. (This does nothing for the customer like me, and when I complained to them they basically just said they could not refund because I used more than three searches!!!) I went from an Advocate to Disgruntled in one day over this issue. So... read ALL the really fine print. I feel this "Deal" is deliberately misleading and want to warn as many as possible about this practice. I am challenging via Fraud Protection Program.

Clearly wrong information, now I can't even sell it, let alone try to trade it in, which is what I tried to do when I found out this information. Filed two claims with Carfax and they will not contact me back. Even if they do, from what I read it will be impossible for them to change this wrong information they have. I went in to trade in my 2012 Audi A3 S Line with only 22,000 miles. Carfax is reporting frame damage. I ran into a coyote that damaged my front bumper - mind you it's plastic. The bumper was replaced and a fog light. The total cost of the repairs was $2,200.00. My car was repaired at a certified Audi dealership. I spoke with my insurance company and they say this was never reported neither did the repair shop. I have the invoices. I disputed it with Carfax and they said they are showing a screw that was $30.00 was replaced near the frame therefore it falls under structural frame damage bracket. No dealer will touch my car. My $34,000 vehicle in excellent condition is now worth $4,000. I think a class action law suit against Carfax needs to be initiated.

Carfax has reported airbag deployment as a result of an accident a few years back. Dealer reports because of this car is considered a salvage. (Not sure presently how accurate this is) None the less, it is lowering my trade value by about 5-7k. I have contacted Carfax via online form. No live person. Someone mentioned class action law suit which I am seriously considering. This is very shady. Carfax is directly responsible for people losing dollar amounts based on erroneous information they provide to dealers and people who rely on said report. If they argue that the information was incorrectly reported to them, it has to be argued and proven that the burden relies on Carfax to validate the information (as someone mentioned it could have been a typo) before including it on a report.

Given the amount of errors it indicates that their validation process is flawed and providing false information on an official decision making report without verifying it is unethical and makes them liable in my opinion. This coupled with the fact that they don't have a live call center to my knowledge puts the disputer in a waiting game until they finally get around to the dispute which from what I am reading often times doesn't get corrected. I will be monitoring this closely and depending on the outcome of my dispute, will see what legal actions can be imposed.

BEWARE - Do NOT purchase a Carfax "unlimited" report plan like I did thinking it was really and truly "unlimited". It is VERY LIMITED as you only get 5 reports generated by a VIN. That is not made clear when ordering the "unlimited" plan or I would NEVER have purchased any reports from Carfax. Their single report pricing is outrageous ($39.99 per report), and I was not interested in the 5 report plan ($49.99) either. It was only because I thought I was getting the ability to run unlimited reports for the different cars I am considering buying that I thought the "unlimited" plan ($54.99) might be a good value even though still expensive.

You can run multiple reports by license number, but I am looking for a used car from small dealer lots. There are NO license plate numbers to use in checking vehicles by license number. It is my intention to tell everyone I know exactly what kind of practice this company engages in and to warn them to NEVER fall into the same BAIT and SWITCH type trap that I did.

I'm furious right now! I bought 5 CARFAXs while searching for a car for my son in July of 2014 and only used one during that car search. Now, in February of 2015 I attempt to get a CARFAX for a second car I am looking to purchase for myself and I come to find out that I cannot access my account to redeem a second CARFAX. I try to find a phone number to car customer service and can find nothing on their website! Only a form to fill out forcing me to wait on them to respond. Then I start to read the fine print and come to realize I was deceived simply because nowhere in the front page sales pitch on the website did I see anything saying this:

If you purchased the Plan and are not 100% satisfied, you qualify for a refund if: You have not, nor has any member of your household, received a refund from CARFAX within the last 12 months; You have run two or less CARFAX Reports on your Plan account; and Your refund is requested within 90 days of your date of purchase.

These money grabbing shysters know that they are advertising a deal for multiple CARFAXs for a cheaper price also knowing people are thinking like me that the CARFAX can be redeemed well down the road for another automobile purchase only to be shocked to find out that the offer expired in 60 days. How many people buy multiple cars (2-5) in a 60 day timeframe anyways!!! I will only be satisfied and have anything positive to say about this business when they refund my hard earned cash for 4 unused CARFAXs I purchased! BUYER BEWARE! It's companies like this that give good businesses a really bad name.

No one can tell it was ever in an accident and it does not affect the function of vehicle in any way. $2700 value knocked off my trade in value even though the car is in perfect condition!

The total loss report was dated back in 2012. The car is clearly in excellent condition, no damage whatsoever along with a Clear Texas Title in hand as hard evidence. When purchasing this car as a third owner in 2013, this report was NOT shown. How does a 2012 report show up in 2015??? Because of this report I have not been able to sell the car. I’ve contacted CARFAX via the "request report investigation" on their website THREE TIMES. I have NOT been contacted nor even acknowledged and have been struggling with this problem. Ok first off I had my local ford dealer in 2011 look for a used mustang gt for me. After a few weeks he found one, a 2002 mustang gt on another dealer's lot. Had the car shipped to this dealership and I purchased it. At the time Carfax showed a mileage discrepancy due to some sloppy paper work between transfer from dealerships. My dealer noticed that all records indicated up to purchase at dealership in Langhorne PA stated odometer was 59000 miles, car shipped to chapman ford and titled at 99000 miles. So when I bought it at Whitmoyer's who had it brought from Chapman, he sent a report to pa dmv and the title came back with correct mileage 59,000.

Long story short I thought everything was fine. Drove the car for 4 more years, now mileage is 83048. Went to trade it in on a car I seen at another dealership and they quoted me at 5,000 for a trade. A few minutes later manager comes back and tells me carfax still has the mileage discrepancy listed and he cannot honor dmv title or my 5000 trade in. He will only give me a value for a reconstructive title. I showed him all the paper work from whitmoyers, chapman and langhorne and the info of the clerical error.

He stated they do not care since still on carfax listing and since all dealers now use carfax he can not do anything until removed from carfax. This in my opinion is crazy and carfax should of removed back in 2011. He said contact carfax so I tried. No numbers, only email so emailed them about clerical error and should my pa dmv title at purchase with 59000 miles. Weeks and no reply back, tried again and still nothing. So went to another dealership in nj and looked at another car and same thing came back flagged and dealer would not even consider my car.

So thanks to carfax, just gather info from computers and vin numbers and never investigating errors. They have destroyed the value of my car. What has happened to America where you are innocent to proven guilty? Guess that is only for criminals since carfax treats everyone as a criminal and never checks on the facts of vehicles. Hopefully no one goes to a quick lube and the careless person behind a register types your information incorrectly cause carfax just takes in the info and never questions or checks the facts.
