Carfax report when I bought my 2009 Honda Accord in Jan 2011, showed one minor accident that had occurred in Feb 2010 and showed one previous owner. Went to trade it in this weekend and now the Carfax shows 2 previous owners and an accident with airbag deployed (Dec 2010). Can't trade or sell now. Trusted that information was accurate when I bought the vehicle.

I am actually a car dealer and I have known for years that Carfax is a scam. I have read a bunch of these posts and the stories are all too familiar. It is unfortunate, but Carfax spends so much money in advertising to convince consumers that they are the authority, that people blindly follow their word based solely on name recognition.
In NH, the state emissions inspection system is completely computerized but has severe limitations. One of them being that the vehicle mileage is rounded down to the nearest thousand. I had a very nice 2003 pickup with 62,326 miles which I had purchased at auction. When we put it through the state inspection computer, the mileage was rounded down to 62,000 miles. Carfax noticed the chronology and reported it as an odometer discrepancy. We contacted Carfax, two different state agencies and ultimately the company who made software for the state computers.
In the end, Carfax was presented with all of the information, including a written statement from the manufacturer of the software about the limitations of the program and they still refused to correct the report. Thankfully, I was able to use all of the supporting documentation to make the sale but Carfax has absolutely no interest in customer service. Autocheck is aware of this limitation, and handles it much better. You still see the reported mileage and the chronology, but with an asterisk saying that the discrepancy is exempt from their "rollback" criteria.
For those of you complaining, there are a few things you can do. First of all, always run both a Carfax and an Autocheck when you're purchasing a car. If you're only going to run one report, get an Autocheck. I have compared them side-by-side on many occasions and have found accidents on Autocheck not reported by Carfax. So far, I've never seen the opposite. Also, regardless of what the reports say, neither of them has a complete database, and there will always be incidents that aren't reported to either service. If you're not confident in your own inspection capabilities, always have the vehicle inspected by a trusted mechanic and/or body shop before you buy it. If the dealer won't let you take a car to your own mechanic, walk away. If you're selling a car which has been in an accident, make sure that you have a copy of accident report.
Carfax often reports only vague, and sometimes erroneous, information relating to accidents. If you have it written in the words of the cop, that carries far more weight with car shoppers. If the Carfax report simply says "accident" and you can prove that it only amounted to a scratch on the bumper, you will have the upper-hand. Many of you point to conspiracies between Carfax and auctions or dealerships. Carfax has a very strong relationship with Ford, but I seriously doubt there is anything nefarious going on. There is the potential for a serious lag-time in information being reported to Carfax, and it's perfectly conceivable that a vehicle could have a clean Carfax report for several months after an accident.
Nobody "holds back" information as some have alleged but if you think about state and insurance company red tape, you can see how it may take months for information to pass. I have seen other allegations that Carfax was manipulating the information on the report. The fact is that they handle the data so little, that nobody even looks at the data, forget about changing it. There are also complaints about reports showing frame damage when, in fact, there was no damage to the frame. This is generally the fault of a body shop, writing an estimate to include "possible frame damage" in order to pad the claim and their ultimate profits. If you're in the habit of asking your body-guy inflate an estimate to cover the deductible, etc, then you are equally at fault.
All in all, Carfax is a horrible company. They will never change an erroneous report because it does not benefit them in any way to do so. Their "guarantee" is written in such a way that they will never have to honor it because they only guarantee that the report information as it was given to them, not that they have the entire history of a vehicle. The only guarantee is that they're going to keep your 40 bucks.

I have a Mercedes, which was left to me by my husband, when he passed away, which he bought like, about six months from the car dealer. I got it serviced and warmed it up, and moved it, so it does not get driven. The car fax shows that the car has 2 more thousand miles on it. That is wrong. If they see the inspections reports, it will be accurate. I don't understand where they are getting this information. I need this issue fixed. I lost a buyer due to this.

I am trying to sell a 2008 Nissan Versa in excellent condition. I am the original owner with only 24,800 miles. A prospective buyer informed me that there is a Carfax report showing damage from an accident. I am stunned, to say the least. I have checked with my insurance company (GEICO) to be sure they didn't have inaccurate information. I have checked with CA DMV and they have nothing listed under my Versa's license plate. I have reported the inaccuracy to Carfax online. I am moving out of state the end of the month and I cannot get a good price on my car due to this incorrect Carfax report. I am so angry! I can't find any other way to report it except online, which could take a long time and I need to sell this car.
I want Carfax to have a customer representative so that incorrect information can be taken care of. This is going to cost me lots of money to sell the car for less than what it is worth.

I purchased a BMW from a BMW dealer with a clean Carfax report. The report indicated no repair history. I saw the dealer bring it up on their computer screen and print me a copy. The report shows no repair history. Six months later, I found out my car has been in BMW shop for repairs for 17 times prior I purchased the car. The Carfax report shows e.g., an emission inspection report, but does not show any of 17 repair services! If I knew, I wouldn't purchase the car. I believe there is a conspiracy between big dealerships and Carfax. I would not trust the Carfax report.

I am trying to sell my extremely low mileage 2009 VW Rabbit and pulled the Carfax, which shows a t-bone accident one month prior to my purchase. It took me a while to realize that they bluntly took the accident off my previous vehicle simply because I re-used the plate number. That is, Carfax doesn't even verify the VIN number of the accident vehicle and attributes the accident to another vehicle. I am not able to sell my almost brand new car, which is an absolute catastrophe for me considering that in two weeks I'll move to Australia. Congress should shut that company down. It ruins the market and people's lives.

People put their trust in this company. In the past, I paid $45 to have a Carfax on my son's car. People pay good money for reports that contain inaccuracies. Our vehicle should have reported 65,600 on mileage. Carfax inaccurately reports 107,000 miles.

It is very suspicious that this information was delayed until two weeks after I purchased the car. I believe there is a conspiracy between auctions, big dealerships and Carfax. Please don't rely on information from Carfax! I will spread the word to as many as possible.

CarFax reports are inaccurate. I purchased my car brand new from dealer with "0" miles. I owned it for 6 years. I was never in an accident. CarFax report states "salvage title" issued in 2006. It is just not true. I've tried to straighten it out by completing CarFax data correction form without success. Since when is it my responsibility to correct their data? CarFax’s verbal response to my inquiry was, "We have over 1 billion records. We receive data from 34,000 agencies. We don't even review the data. It’s uploaded into our system." I tried to sell a car I had owned from new to a dealership, and they pulled a carfax report on it. One of the services in the report listed an erroneous mileage. This cost me $2000 in trade value. Carfax is spreading wrong information and costing the consumers on both sides, buying and selling. Unlike credit reports, the consumer has no way to get the information corrected, and is just being set up for defrauding, because somebody at a mechanic shop fat fingers a mileage reading.
Now on my new car, we just got the oil changed and the garage put the mileage in as kilometers and not miles and refuses to correct it as it "did not matter." Here we go again. It cost $2000 in trade-in value.

Therefore, they would not buy it at fair price.
I think CARFAX has done harm to me by giving me unreliable information and later on adding information to their report. This has not done justice to me as a buyer who trusted CARFAX report at the time of car purchase. As a consequence, I could not make the trade in since I was asking Kelly Blue Book Trade-in Price of $ 50,000 for my car but they were just offering $43,000 due to the report that my car had an accident in NY prior to my purchase.
I think I should be compensated for this loss of value due to presently false or incomplete report at the time of my purchase. If this is the case then no one should trust a CARFAX report. I must add that the minor bumper accident with parking stop concrete stop wherein I had my insurance replace the bumper was not an issue after I explained it to them. It was this surprising unknown accident that I had no previous knowledge of that I was questioning to them.

The dealer backed out because the report threw up a red flag and said the jeep wasn't eligible for their buyback program.
I sent a complaint to Carfax but have not heard back from them yet. I also called the dealer where I bought the jeep and he said that I would try to find out what happened. On April 12th 2011, I obtained a carfax report for a 2009 Toyota Matrix, which indicated no reported accidents. Based on the information in this report, I decided to purchase the vehicle.
On August 16th, I was presented with an AutoCheck report that indicates that the vehicle was involved in a collision on May 11th 2009, as reported by a State Agency. This information is nearly two years prior to my purchase of the vehicle, so I think its reasonable to expect that the information should have been reflected on the report from April 12th.
Based on this information, I expected CarFax to honor its buyback policy. I opened a case and sent them both the CarFax and AutoCheck reports. However, they quickly responded back that they were sorry to tell me that my claim did not qualify for their guarantee.

Earlier this year, I was attempting to downgrade to a less expensive car. I was having issues with low offers being given by dealerships for trade-in value and couldn't figure out why. In March 2011, I had a Carfax report pulled on my vehicle by a dealer friend of mine. I was informed that the report had comments indicating my airbag had deployed when I was in an accident in Sept. 2009. The airbag was never deployed. Upon calling my insurance company and the repair facility, both agencies confirmed that they do not report to Carfax.
I filed a request with Carfax for the correction. I provided a copy of the repair report with pictures as supporting documentation. I was informed that the repair report was not an acceptable documentation. They needed the original long form police report submitted in order for the correction to be made. It turned out that the police report had the wrong box checked and listed that my airbag had deployed. So I had to get the original police officer to correct the report. The corrected report was then provided to Carfax. Carfax made the correction to the Sept 2009 comment and removed the verbiage "airbag deployed”. However, they also "added" an additional comment dated Oct 2009 listing that a repair bill was provided by the consumer and repairs were valued at $3760.79. I have asked Carfax to remove the additional comment. The repair report was provided specifically as supporting documentation to be used for the correction of an existing comment, not for an additional comment to be added. Carfax refused to remove the comment and accused me of attempting to defraud the public.

I listed my 2007 Honda CRV on eBay last month and eBay allows you to link to a free Car Fax report. When I saw the report, I saw that an accident on 8/1/2010 was listed, which is correct. However, it's listed as an accident reported with another vehicle. This is misleading because it was an accident that occurred when I was backing out of a space in a parking lot at the same time as the car opposite me; and our rear bumpers collided at about 1/2 MPH. The result was a slight misalignment of the bumper and a deep scratch. The repair shop could have repaired and repainted it but suggested that I replace the entire bumper cover so that the job can look seem-less, at a price of $632. This was the only accident that I had with this car and the vehicle is maintained well.
I complained to Car Fax, and faxed them the police report which indicates that the accident occurred in a parking lot. To my amazement, Car Fax refused to indicate in the report that the accident occurred in a parking lot. Through e-mails back and forth, Mr. **, the Car Fax resolution manager, has taken a firm and confrontational stance; and when I asked for a decision-maker, he indicated that he was the decision-maker, and that no further communications on this matter will happen. He refuses to give me a phone number as there are no numbers for Car Fax listed anywhere.
To make matters worse, after this inquiry, Car Fax added another accident occurring 1/5/2011 to my report involving a front-left impact. This is totally erroneous because I did not have any accident with this vehicle other than the one on 8/2/2010. I faxed Car Fax my complaint. Mike ** replied through e-mail that he is looking into the matter. This is totally ridiculous. They should take it off the report immediately because it is affecting my ability to sell my car. I wonder which government entity regulates Car Fax? This is the worst-run company I have ever seen. Their unjustified actions will cost me over $4,500 in value on my vehicle. They need to be stopped. I decided to sell the Corvette on 6/30/11 to Maroone Autonations. They initially offered 32.4K for the Corvette. They later withdrew the offer because the Carfax they acquired showed my car was in an accident on 10/6/07.

Who in the world elected CarFax to be the final word on vehicles that are being traded in at a new car dealer. I lost upwards to $1,200.00 on a trade because of a CarFax on my very well taken care of, pristine 10 year old Nissan Pathfinder. The CarFax is so incorrect of proper information and of course a clerical error regarding mileage. Really embarrassed me and my wife at the dealer.
CarFax is a worthless piece of crap that cannot be changed to the correct information because this Carfax is the word of God. Example: It states that my Pathfinder was purchased at a dealer that was not in existence until four years later. It also goes on to state that my vehicle, that has always been Nissan dealer serviced, was serviced at a Non-Nissan dealer many times and the incorrect mileage cost me $1,200.00 less in my trade.
I would like this report fixed to reflect the correct information. I want a supervisor from CarFax to call me ASAP to discuss. I do not care if they do not have a call center. How can I get them to respond? This was entirely embarrassing to me as I have never had an issue with my vehicles ever.

I co-own a vehicle with my son. I am the original owner of this vehicle and purchased it brand new from the car dealership with eight miles on the odometer. Recently when my son was trying to trade-in this vehicle, the car dealership ran a Carfax report. The report stated that the vehicle had been declared totaled in Missouri in 2008 and was worth -$2000.
It also stated that the title was on its third owner. We thought it was a joke until the dealership showed us the report. We insisted that the dealership contact them again since we are the true original owners. The car is perfectly fine and we have never had it registered anywhere but Florida. We were told that Carfax said "for them not to take the vehicle as a trade-in, that we were lying". This was extremely embarrassing and totally humiliating. We have contacted the Missouri Dept. of Vehicles and we were told that they had notified Carfax in 2009 of the mistake concerning the VIN # on the totaled vehicle and were surprised that it hadn't been taken care of. We have emailed Carfax (since you can't talk to anyone) and haven't had a response.
We are now in our third week of dealing with this. I was advised to contact law enforcement and after talking to them, I was advised to contact the insurance company that held the coverage when the vehicle was purchased. Everyone involved other than Carfax is trying to resolve this issue.

I did have damage done to the truck, but I had no frame damage. I recently tried to do a dealer trade, and the new Carfax said that I had severe damage done. Due to the word “severe”, my truck might as well have a rebuilt title on it. I’m being offered $4000 less than what it is worth. This is not fair, and Carfax should not be allowed to regulate a report, if they never saw or inspected the vehicle.

We were looking to trade vehicles. You can imagine my horror when the dealer told us that our trade-in was reported as being in an accident in Illinois. We had never had an accident and had never even been to Illinois. When I got home and researched Carfax complaints, I was really worried that this could become a huge problem. I emailed Carfax on a Wednesday. I got a personal email from Tia the next day with a link to the "correction" form. I filled out the pdf form with all the requested info and emailed it to Tia. I got a response on Friday (again from Tia), saying she had requested the accident report from Illinois. I got a final email from Tia saying the matter had been resolved. She included a link for a free Carfax report so I could verify that the accident report had been removed. This was obviously a case of the wrong VIN number being entered somewhere. I got a very personal and very timely response from Carfax. I don't know what more I could have asked for.

I have a Hummer H2 VIN **. Last week I had the vehicle sold and the buyer backed out last minute. After taking time off from my job etc., the purchaser contacted me and stated that the vehicle was a TMU, as specified by the Carfax report that he had just pulled out. He notified me that he purchased another Hummer and that he was very disappointed with me not disclosing such pertinent information with him regarding the high dollar amount of this vehicle. So now I am stuck with a Hummer that needed to be sold in order to pay for the new car my wife had purchased. I had to sell the Hummer as we cannot afford another payment with the house we had recently purchased and other misc. bills generated by our three year old son.
It turns out that the issue on the Carfax was a mileage discrepancy caused by someone altering the odometer into a computer from the last time the vehicle was inspected. I have not seen the report and was told all of this by the last 2 individuals who refused to even look at the truck, thanks to Carfax! There was never and I repeat never any issue with this vehicle's mileage. I contacted Carfax today and they were 110% no help in the matter at all. Now I am stuck with additional payments that we cannot afford and a vehicle I cannot sell for what it is worth, again all thanks to Carfax. It has bogus unverified reporting techniques.
In the next month I will not be able to afford the payment, my credit is going to be ruined especially when they come to repossess the vehicle. I cannot afford any more payments and I will still owe money due to the fact that after they run it through an auction and this report, I will only recover a fourth of the value. Then I can foresee my house getting foreclosed due to the fact that Carfax printed an information without even verifying it first.
I lost out on a $20,000.00+ sale. I was selling this vehicle since I purchased a new one. Now I have to pay for both, which I cannot afford anymore. I will seek legal restitution, etc.

I went to trade-in my vehicle and in the process of pulling up all my information, the dealership ran a Carfax.com report on my car. The information said that I was rear-ended and had my bumper replaced on my BMW. Based on this information, Carfax suggested that there was an $8,000 loss to my vehicle price! I nearly fell out of my seat when I heard this.
Here are the facts. My car was parked in a garage, my bumper was scraped. The person who scraped it left a note and paid for the damage, which was minimal. It was a faint scratch! Needless to say I took this person up on her offer. I have a high-end sports car and so does she. It cost $3,000 to fix the bumper. It’s in mint condition and looking better than ever. The bumper was buffed and repainted. Apparently, the repair shop reported this claim to Carfax. Fine, but the details of the incident were not reported correctly. So here is what I am dealing with, an $8,000 loss on my trade-in plus another $3,000 to fix the bumper. That puts the total negative cost at $11,000. This is an atrocity that a faint scratch would cause this much financial stress because of an inaccurate Carfax report. I would have been better off never fixing my car and trading it in as is and taking a loss of a few thousand dollars instead of over 10 grand in losses.
This is an unconscionable act. I do not know how Carfax and these dealerships get away with this robbery of consumers. It is not fair that there is no other recourse with these people. They list no contact information, no address, email or number. I cannot get an explanation as to why this report exists. I don't know who the "expert" is that tells the dealership my car is worth $8000 LESS! The car is in perfect condition. And on top of that, the dealership has some sort of paint measuring device and gave me some excuse saying that the car has to go to auction since the bumper was painted. What consumer measures the paint on all panels of the car and demands an $8000 drop in price?
This tool costs $1,800. If I could knock $8000 off a car with that tool, sign me up. Carfax and the dealerships are a bunch of frauds, scam artists, cheaters and liars. What a disgrace that anyone has to interact with such unscrupulous people. They should all be jailed for participating in abhorrent schemes like this. Oklahoma has also told me that they do not use the term branded that CARFAX is using and that there is no issue with my title. But I cannot trade it in because of the CARFAX report.

Unfortunately, the report showed that my car had run into the other vehicle and had flipped onto its roof. This is the exact reverse of what occurred and what the police report shows.
I contacted Carfax to get the information corrected and was told that I had to provide sufficient documentation to prove it to them or they would need seven weeks to research it themselves. Now, here is a for profit business who charge for supposedly reliable information which they generate from thousands of data sources, when challenged it then takes them weeks to get their information right. It seems to me that either they are having to research an awful lot of inaccurate reports or do not treat the integrity of their reporting very highly. So far, I am out a minimum of the $2500 which I lost on trade-in value.

I pulled a Carfax report on 7/25/08 for a 2003 Acura TL Type-S, which showed no accidents in the history. It basically appeared "clean", so to speak. There were no recordings that sparked suspicion. I have had this car for 1 year and now can afford the car I really want, so I prepared to put it for sale. I pulled another Carfax right before I planned to list the car. It shows an "Accident Warning" with a notation that the car was in an accident 3/24/07 in Manhattan, KS with functional damage. It also notes that Carfax reported this accident on 3/18/09, nearly 2 years after the accident occurred, and over 6 months after I purchased what appeared to be an accident-free car.
It is unfair that because this was not noted in a timely fashion that I was not given the benefit of this information before I purchased this car, but whoever buys it after me will. I expect to lose a significant amount of money on this vehicle. I'm not sure what the point of Carfax is. They do not appear to provide the service they claim to provide. I contacted Carfax about an accident reported for my vehicle. Here is the exact e-mail I sent to them: Incorrect record/Information: No comment - no damage to vehicle.
Details: Two teenage boys made a right turn on red and swung out into the left lane, as I was driving through the intersection. Their vehicle left a paint streak across the right rear fender and wheel. At the time, I had no way of knowing the extent of the damage. To avoid insurance issues, I elected to call the Chesterfield Police. So, it determined without a shadow of a doubt that it was not my fault. In fact, the driver was issued a ticket. Later, when I took the vehicle to Elco Chevrolet Body Shop, it was determined that the paint streak did not cause any damage; and they were able to use paint remover to paint on both the fender and wheel. There is no notation regarding the extent nor cost of the damage in the Carfax.
Documentation: I can ask Elco's Body Shop manager to write something on their letterhead to explain what the repair entailed or whatever else you require to further clarify this issue, as I do not have any documentation because they removed the paint while I waited and did not charge me. The also know how picky I am about the vehicle and wanted to make sure I was satisfied with the results. No one has ever said a word about it since when looking at the car, and I forgot about it until I recently checked the Carfax report.
All I wanted for them to do was to annotate the incident and add that there was no body work damage and no cost for the repair. Their reply: Carfax has concluded its research for the case. I have reviewed the police issued accident report and have verified that the report does state that this vehicle was struck by another vehicle and damage was noted to the right side of this vehicle.
Because a police-issued accident report is considered to be an official government document, I will not be able to change the Carfax report until a corrected police report has been issued. If you are able to obtain a corrected police report then please fax it to 1-866-728-6455 and I will reopen this research case. I recently sent you a separate email with a 14-day link to access and print the updated Carfax Vehicle History Report. (end of reply)
I went back to ELCO (Enterprise Leasing Company's Chevrolet dealership) to talk to the body shop manager, who had originally handled the issue. He was no longer there. But the manager of the body shop and repair shop agreed to write a repair order stating exactly what happened. Basically, while determining the extent of the damage, he used paint remover and determined there was no damage other than to remove the rest of the paint at no cost to me. I faxed this document to Carfax. Now, Mike changed his mind; and here is what he said:
I did receive the new repair order. I'm still not able to add repair estimate of $0. The estimate first says that there is no damage. Then, it says there were scrapes and paint transfer and that work was done to fix this damage. But the bill does not reflect the work that was completed. The main issue is that I cannot add a record stating this vehicle sustained no damage when both the police report and the repair order states this vehicle sustained damage. At this time, I will not be able to make any changes to the Carfax report. He also told me to ask the Chesterfield Police department to alter their report. Of course, that is not possible and not what I asked. I replied that the police department was not responsible for estimating damage, and he replied:
"Carfax received a record stating that this vehicle was involved in an accident where another vehicle struck the right side of this vehicle. Upon your request, Carfax obtained a copy of the accident report and verified that another vehicle did indeed strike the right side of this vehicle. At no point has Carfax made any estimate as to the damage that was sustained to this vehicle. At no point does the police-issued accident report make an estimate as to the amount of damage this vehicle sustained. Carfax has accurately reported the exact information that has been issued by the police department, which made the original report. As you know, Carfax does not inspect vehicles and thus must rely on its sources for any damage extent information. No damage extent has been reported to Carfax from any of its sources for this vehicle. As such, Carfax is not able to make any estimate of damage for this vehicle. I will not be able to make any change to the Carfax Vehicle History Report at this time."
I replied that ELCO is listed on the Carfax report as a credible and verifiable source, but the repair ticket explaining the situation with the car was not "good enough" and that he was twisting the words of the repair ticket to avoid using it. In summary, Carfax originally agreed to annotate the report if they received a document from a credible and verifiable source. They later changed their minds after twisting the words of the repair ticket, claiming it was not part of the original police report.

I called her again on the phone and set the price for $18000, including a set of winter tires and wheels for a total of $500. When the Audi dealers ran the report on the car several times I went there, they told me that the car was being totaled, which I did not believe. Now, I want to trade the car and the dealer tells me that the car was being salvaged. The worst thing is that the report shows that the car was being salvaged during the time I have the car (the second owner), which is myself. I got the car in July 2007 and the report says it was salvaged in December of 2007. I have not had any accident, even a simple one with this car - this can be checked.
When asked the previous owner if there were any accidents, she lied to me. She did not tell me anything. Because of the fact that I did not know what was the accident that happened to the car, I myself could have made an accident that could lead to me ending up somewhere. Why did Carfax not show the correct report? I would not have bought the car in this case or haggled over the price to be dropped down with couple of thousands less (most likely I would not buy it). I received email from carfax that my account is now activated. I tryed to login and received an error - your account is expired. So I wrote email to carfax complaining about it. Nothing happened. I decided to wait till Monday. On Monday morning (9am) I write email to carfax again and received an answer with my email reference number. It was said If your e-mail was sent before 4:00 PM Eastern Time you will receive a reply within two business hours. If sent after 4:00 PM Eastern Time a response will be sent the next business day. Now it is already 12:30pm and I still can' log in to my account. And I can't find any info about refund. I wrote email to carfax about refund but didn't get any answer. This is really fraud company doesn't caring about costomers. Why to write about 2hour answer if they can't keep their word.

I purchased a used car from a dealer who knew the car was in an accident with frame damage. Basically, CarFax did not show the report because the car was not branded. Autocheck shows my car was announced at auction with frame damage and unibody damage. Unfortunately, I did not know about AutoCheck until after I purchased the car.
The dealer has you sign a contract that states they do their best to inspect all vehicles but they do not guarantee the vehicle has been in an accident. How misleading is that when they know it was in an accident. Last night, after I discovered AutoCheck, I ran this dealer's cars on AutoCheck. They have 23 vehicle vins posted on their website, and 8 had frame damage reported at auction. That's 1/3.
The dealer promotes CarFax on their website; however, CarFax does NOT contain auction reports. They do have Lexus on their lot and website that AutoCheck says had announced at auction frame damage; however, this is what that dealer says about the car: The Carfax states the car was in an accident. It looks like there was some minor paint work on the back of the vehicle. It does not look like anything had to be replaced on the vehicle. What they do not tell you is that this car was reported to AutoCheck with frame damage when they purchased it. This dealer is running a scam. I have all the paperwork if you wish to look into this. It is just unreal.

I advertised my 2005 Altima for sale and a guy named Sonny came to check out the car. We were about to close the deal when he asked if he can use my computer and get a history of the car. I was surprised that CARFAX revealed there was an accident in Jun 2007 with a reference number of the police report. I am the first owner of the car and there was never any accident at any time since I bought it.
We already shook hands and about to close the deal and the buyer backed out because of this false report by CARFAX. I am pressed for time to sell the car because I am leaving for overseas soon and now I have to suffer and probably sell it really low price because of the false report by CARFAX. I am a 22 year veteran who have not even received a single ticket in the past 35 years that I've been driving and now this is what I get.
I just wish CARFAX realized the pain and disappointment and financial loss they cause from publishing false and apparently unverified reports to the public. I will take my car with anyone (Dealer, DMV, Police) who wants to check if it was ever involved in an accident because I know my true record is clean. I'm just a human being who want to do what is right and expect the same in return from others.

I bought a used NISSAN Altima 2006 car from a dealer. I was very particular about the CARFAX history (I paid $30 for those reports) and wanted to go for only those with no accident history, no matter how good they are. I selected one vehicle and in the inspection it was found to be safe, though there were doubts that the side fender got replaced, I was OK as the CARFAX is clean and it had updates until previous month. Shockingly, I discovered 3 days after buying the car, that it had an accdent reported for a date almost 6 months before. The CARFAX clean history car before I bought became an accident car 3 days after I bought.
I paid a high cost for the car when I bought and the amount could not be negotiated much as it had clean history. And if I want to sell the car, no one is ready to pay even $3000 less, unfortunately, many people give lot of importance to CARFAX. Better to go by the inspection than by CARFAX. It is highly inaccurate and does not report all incidents. you never know, they even end up reporting an accdent one year after it actually happened.

I purchased a 2003 Audi A4 Avant in February of 2007, the car was really clean and drove like a brand new car, and it also had a clean Carfax history. After little more than a year, I go to see how much I can get if I trade it in, and the dealership gives me a rediculous quote of $6,000! They tell me the car was in an accident in 2005, and as of March of this year, sure thing Carfax is now showing the accident.
Even better, I go to get homeowners insurance along with auto, and they asked if the accident with damages totalling $25,000 happened when I owned the car! I tell them no and ask him to again if that figure is right, and he informed me again it had that much in damages in the accident.
Economic damage? The tires on the car are worth more than the car itself now! I was wanting to get into a bigger vehicle, but I'll be too far upside down in the Audi! A lot of good keeping service records did, a private buyer isn't going to [care] that it's been maintained perfectly when they see its had an accident...

Carfax reports it was in an accident in Cleveland, OH 2/9/2007 (no license plate listed). This is an accident that was inaccurately assigned to my VIN.

I purchased a used BMW from a dealer in September 2006. Prior to purchasing the vehicle I purchased a CARFAX vehicle report that showed no accident history on the vehicle. I was also assured by the Dealer that there was no accident history and they backed up that assertion with a CARFAX report of their own. As of March 18, 2008 CARFAX is now reporting an accident that occured on 9/17/2005, a full year before I purchased their report and made my vehicle purchase based on their representations.
CARFAX has no explanation of the 2 and 1/2 year delay in providing the information other than a " oh well, too bad for you ". I have had three potential buyers decline to purchase the vehicle because of the new information that his magically appeared on the CARFAX report. (I don't blame them, I WOULD NOT have purchased the vehicle if the information had been made available to me at the time either).
It had been more than a year since the accident when I purchased the CARFAX report. I am sure that the information was readily available, it just wasn't provided by CARFAX. In short, I purchased this vehicle based on their report which was erroneous, inaccurate and incomplete. Now I am unable to resell this vehicle due to the information that they have finally added to the report, 2 1/2 years late.

I too ran into the same problems with trying to get the free history report no matter what link I went to I was repeatedly brought back to the same two websites. Carfax and Autocheck, and when you enter the VIN you are told there is a history or how many records of file and if you'd like any further information it'll cost you a minimum of 20.00, which I simply cannot afford. I've heard some people say that knowing the history should be worth it, but for some of us after buying a new car or in the process, we simply do not have that much left in our pockets for that purpose, the safety of the public, should not only be available to those who can afford it or who have credit cards.

I also had problems with carfax. We were looking to by a used suburban. We found one online at our local dealer, so we went online and paid for unlimited carfax reports for 30 days. The report came back CLEAN! We went to the dealer and they too showed a CLEAN report. After we had the 2004 Suburban for 4 days, it would not crank. As we were looking everything over, we noticed that they drivers side door had been repainted and all under the drivers seat was rusted and the seat cushion was molded. My first thought was, the vehicle has been in water. We looked under the passenger seat and it too was rusted, the metal under the dash and the metal to the foot pedals was really bad. We could not understand why the 2nd and 3rd row seat had no rust at all. We had a whole list of items that went wrong with the vehicle. It was towed back to the dealer, due to not starting.
They replaced the fuel pump and asked me, did you know that that vehicle does not have a key hole in either dirver or passenger door? I was unaware of this and they told me that they would replace the handle with the correct one. I was then thinking, what happened to this suburban? I called Cheverolet and gave them the VIN and asked if this vehicle should have had a key hole, I was told yes, it came from the factory with one. So we knew then, not sure what happened, but we knew something did. The drivers door paint was a different color, the door handle with a key hole had be replaced with a handle without a key hole, and the rust under the seats and dash.
We took a family trip from Florida to Mississippi and I was thinking more about water damage or something. I went to the National Insurance Crime Bureau's website and checked the VIN for water damage and was not expecting to see what I did. This vehicle has an active stolen report, contact us or your local law enforcement agency. WOW, I was upset! I called the NICB and was told that it was stolen, but they would contact the insurance company and get back with me. Luckly, I printed that page out and keep it. They called back and told me, it was stolen but found. I asked the rep, what would have happened if we were stopped by law enforcement between MS and FL? She said, if they ran the VIN, it would show stolen and we would get charged. We have 2 small children, one with special needs. I was fuming at this point. I also asked her why carfax showed a clear report, she said that it should be the same and checked carfax herself. She said that she could not explain why carfax did not show the same info and placed me on hold and contacted her supervisor. They had no answers to carfax's report.
As soon as I got off the phone with her, the report changed on NICB, so I am glad that I printed that out. The next day, as we were leaving MS to come home to FL, the suburban will not start. We had to wait until the next morning and have it towed to a Chevy dealer and we were told that someone has damaged the steering coloum and it is in bad shape. We had to get repairs to that and was able to leave MS within a few hours. When we arrived back in town, the dealership re-painted the driver side door, replaced the drivers seat cushion and finished temperary repairs to the steering, which will not hold up long. We relied on carfax and was let down, and know we have a damaged suburban that we will always have to put money into. We have no idea, what happened to the vehicle when it was stolen. They may have broke into it, and then ran it into a ditch, which would cause the rust under the dash and 2 front seats. We could not get the dealer to help us with all the rust. I have not found away to contact carfax about this, so if anyone has advice, please let me know.
