With Vanguard changing to brokerage they wanted to re-obtain our trust documentation which is a cost and annoyance because our lawyer is the one that has the official, clean copy and they charge for a copy. That caused me to think about selling and that caused me to look at the cost basis numbers to understand the tax hit. My funds that started in 2005 don't have cost accounting done and when I called they said they couldn't provide them. Given we had dividend and capitol gain reinvestment that is a major mess with each of the two funds having 5-10 additions each year which EACH have their own cost basis for tax.

Worse yet their transaction history didn't exist for 2005-2009 when the account switched to being a trust and they claimed they couldn't produce that information either. WORSE yet one of the funds got converted from Wellington to Wellington Admiral which don't have a one to one stock equivalence. That means all the transaction history prior to the 2016 conversion have to be proportionately computed before the cost basis can be computed. When I tried to print the transaction history there were 221 entries (remember 4 years undocumented) and when I selected "print" on their listing they only printed the current page so I had to do that 5 times to get it all in print. I've stopped reinvestment while I compute the numbers so the hole doesn't get any deeper. I've done half of the documented entries of the easier fund and that took two hours so I estimate 10+ hours to do all the work.

If I give it or gave it to a tax accountant I believe it would be a charge of $500-$1000 to do it all. A complete mess and Vanguard has been no help whatsoever. I plan to sell the easy one this year after I do all the computation and use the experience to do the tougher one next year. If you're a long term Vanguard customer I believe Vanguard has created a serious documentation problem for you. My experiences include an escalation to Vanguard management (Mark **).

Vanguard has apparently lost control of a substantial amount of my money in a non-qualified plan. I have been trying for 6 months to make a permitted distribution election, and they have been almost completely non-responsive. I still have no pathway toward resolution. The problem is that they have defaulted to a state where I am due to get the entire payout in March of 2026. This defeats the whole point of a tax-deferred account. In other words, their incompetence will cost me hundreds of thousands of dollars in the long run.

Their system is absolutely pathetic. Not only do you have to wait on hold forever, but #1 - they can't get you a statement with the whole account number: 2. You have to verify your identity every time they transfer you to another service provider; 3. You cannot give them instructions to just liquidate your account and send you the money. No, you need to ask them to liquidate it today and call back the next day to send the money over! Plus, when we called today their system was conveniently down just as we were asking to liquidate the account, so they won't be able to liquidate until after market close, so we have to call back next week to liquidate and then call the following day to have the money sent over. Can customer service be any worse than this?!?

I had to be with them for 2 days on the phone, and each representative said the same thing: that they will not transfer to a supervisor and will keep you on hold while not capable of assisting. Maybe they don't have supervisors, and customer service cannot assist. In addition, Vanguard is putting a hold on 401K money with no disclosure to the customer. I will never be a customer of Vanguard after this.

Vanguard is a total SCAM. They have done this to us twice now. Here is how it works. You download the app to pay for parking. You give all your credit card information.... No receipt will be given for proof of purchase-you will be under the assumption you have paid and all is well. 1-2 weeks later you will receive a late fee parking ticket in the mail for every day you parked there. They do not process your original payment right away so you don't have a receipt or show any charges on your credit card statement for that day. By the time you received your new late fee ticket in the snail mail 7 more days have already passed. Parking started out at $30.00/day is now $85.00/day with the fine. Most people will pay this without looking into it. This is what Vanguard is banking on (literally).

From this day you only have a few days to get new fraudulent bill paid or it increases to $180/day. They are a faceless business, meaning you will NEVER EVER find a human to talk to. If you don't pay your fraudulent bill, you'll have it hanging over your head until you get pulled over and show unpaid parking tickets. It's genius. 100% foolproof theft in broad daylight.

The person my investment guy and I talked to was very rude and terribly unhelpful. She had a strong accent which was not easy for me to understand. Based on the noise in the background, this was probably an example of customer service being farmed out to a foreign country. Not only would she not give us a transaction number but she would only give us a single name "Kim". She was so unprofessional that I would probably have lost my temper if not for the fact that, at this moment in time, she controlled a large chunk of my retirement account. This from a company that everyone has at least heard of if not an actual customer. I am glad I will never, ever have anything to do with this company.

I had a Vanguard account for 3 3/4 years Personal Advisor Account. It had low fees .30 but I didn’t make any money. The only money I made was from the dividends. In 3 3/4 years, I made less than 8 percent total. It had a Domestic and a International Stock and Bond fund. The gains all got absorbed in their hidden fees because they were all Vanguard funds.

All in all, in 3 3/4 years I made what less than I should have made in one year. My another accounts that are self-managed did fine and this account barely made anything. So beware if you invest directly with Vanguard and you're not making money and your other accounts are don’t wait as long as I did to go somewhere else with your money Because things won’t change and they make all the money in the hidden fees and you make very little. This was its history all along but I kept wait for it to start making a better return, but it never happened and they hand-picked all the funds. I’d give them a negative 10 for what they did for me. I've been denied access to my GNMA account of 45+ yrs. When I've tried, repeatedly to create an account "log in", Vanguard won't recognize any of my info tho I've received a monthly check for decades. I have no ability to manage my money! My husband just passed away after 7 yrs of suffering dementia. Our Vanguard account has been in our revocable trust for 31 yrs & I've sent copious documents by USPS to the company, over the last year, to prove my authentic ownership but received no response.

After numerous phone calls I was promised, on 3/12/25, by an "associate" named Tywon that he would take care of the problem & call me back or email me the next week. Nothing, as usual! I sent an email to a Vanguard address on 4/9/25 with a page full of documentation & ALL my contact information & as usual, no good. I've found there aren't any email addresses which allow contact by account owners who have serious problems to resolve.

I'm to the point of trying to find a government agency which might be an overseer, who would intervene on my behalf, to force Vanguard to return my money. This company used to be so easy & accommodating in our transactions. Real people, with knowledge & ethics, who followed thru on promises to help & resolve any issues which arose. Those days seem to be in the past! Thank you for providing me with a sounding board for sharing, what I consider to be, reprehensible, unethical, sloppy, & uncaring customer interaction.

The customer service experience with Vanguard has been atrocious. I've never experienced anything so poor with any other firm. It started with my account being locked down for what appeared to be an incorrect password. The website gave a phone number to call in to a call center where it is clear the staff is not trained to adequately understand procedures and answer questions. I spoke to two people there before being transferred to a person who was, from the moment she got on the call, impatient. While I spoke with her, she was huffing as though she could not be bothered to hear my situation. She said things like, "I will refer this to my TL" and when I asked what a TL she got a tone like I was stupid for not knowing. I asked her if there was another phone number related to fraud concerns I could call. For some reason, I had to ask her three times before she gave me the phone number.

At that point, I spoke to two people who were at least able to give me a better idea of what was going on and why they had locked down my account out of safety due to fraud concerns. But they still were unable to resolve the problem. This was on a Thursday and I could not access my funds. On the following Monday, I called to see if there was any update, which there was not, at which point I was informed that my account had been locked down since two days earlier, so nearly a full week at that point. The person I spoke with said she would look into it and get back to me but never called back.

The next morning I called to see again if there was any update and was told that it would take 72 hours for somebody to call me back. Note that this is the standard line with Vanguard. They all tell you, "Somebody will get back to you within 72 hours." Note that that's 72 business hours. So it can mean that if you, the client, are facing some kind of issue with your account then you have to wait up to three business days to even have somebody call you back and no, that doesn't mean that they will even resolve your problem by then. In my case, I spoke to them on Thursday and now it's Tuesday and not only can I not get anybody to help me but I've not been told I will have to wait 72 hours *again*.

Meanwhile, I cannot access my account. There is no office I can go to to speak with somebody. The website gave me misinformation. The people I've spoken with have either been poorly trained, rude, or were nice but gave me the runaround and told me they would get back to me but have not. It's gotten so bad that I've reached a point where I am starting to think they're holding my money hostage because they know I'll withdraw the funds and switch to another bank once I regain access to what are essentially my life savings. It's been so stressful I cannot sleep and I've lost hours of time calling to try to get answers.

If you decide to go with Vanguard and run into any account issues, be aware that this is the kind of treatment you will experience. I decided bank and invest with Vanguard based on personal recommendations, but it's clear to me now that the people who made these recommendations were basing their view off of some prior version of Vanguard. I didn't read the negative reviews here and I wish I had because many of them reflect the terrible experience I've had. I rarely take the time to write reviews but this has been so shocking that I wanted to back up what others have described. All I can say is: Just stay away.

The company I used to work for set up my retirement plan through Vanguard. I left that job and have been trying to rollover my retirement fund into my new retirement account through the new company I work with. It's been a nightmare since I requested in August 2024 (now it is April 2025). The company I used to work for provides the wrong contact number for Vanguard. Apparently, the number they give is an individual participant number, when I'm supposed to have be contacting a different number. In total, there are 3 numbers I can call. The individual plan continuously hangs up instead of transfers. The other two work.

Additionally, Vanguard has so many different websites, I am never logging into the right one and there is no way to redirect. Partially my fault; however, I think it is simply a bad system when you cannot login from the main site. They also provide a number for the login assistance. You can only do a phone call after putting in identifying information like last 4 of social and birthdate, which is an extremely outdated way to retrieve your login.

On to why it's taken almost a year to rollover my fund, Vanguard doesn't know. When I requested it in August, they said to wait a few weeks for the check to come in. I called back when it didn't come in. I was on hold for close to 30 minutes while they tried to find out. They said there was some kind of hold, but it would be sent out once everything was cleared. After not receiving anything for 3-4 month, I called again asking about the check. They said there is still a hold on it. I asked what was going on. They said that they were going through every single transaction to make sure it was accurate. I asked if that normally takes several months. They said no but it's possible. I've called another time after this with no answers, just that it's still processing.

I tried to receive my funds through my new retirement company because they said they would request direct transfers for me. Great, until I learned Vanguard only does checks, which require a $75 processing fee. Another outdated practice. Also, I simply do not like the fact they charge an unnecessarily large processing fee when it's not even a process I want.

Finally, I called again in April 2024. Vanguard states they can send the check. There is no hold or note on the account. There were no answers as to why they had to hold it for so long. Now my funds have decreased due to the stock market crash. So, I'll be keeping the account until it goes back up; however, how incompetent. I find it so incompetent that they hold my funds for over 6 months, I request it to be rolled over multiple times, and now that I've lost funds they can't even explain why they were holding the money because they didn't put any notes on the account.

I selected Vanguard for my Traditional IRA, moving from another broker. My custom has been to make qualified charitable distributions (QCDs) from my IRA by writing checks to the charity. However, after moving the account to Vanguard, I learned that Vanguard does not allow IRA customers to write check on their account for a year after opening their account. Instead, a customer has to go through the tedious process of directing Vanguard to made the disbursement. It took about a week after I requested a QCD check it to be sent.

More significant: I needed Vanguard to issue a wire transfer of less than $30,000 to a tour company, as payment for a trip. I called Vanguard, requesting the disbursement from my account - the amount of the disbursement was about .2% of my account balance. As I waited on the phone, the Vanguard rep talked to someone, apparently in a supervisory position. The tour company was an established foreign company, with a website, reviews and a significant presence. I have full confidence in the company, and have had multiple interactions with them. I am a retired attorney, experienced in business, with a large balance IRA. Vanguard refused to process the wire transfer of my funds to the tour company. The rep refused to allow me to discuss the matter with the unnamed individual who apparently made the decision declining my instruction to disburse the funds. There was no way to review the decision. I am in process of moving my account.

I told Peter, the representative at Vanguard, he would need to speak slowly and loudly if he wanted me to hear. Not only did he do this, but he was very knowledgeable and courteous, saying “thank you” many times in our conversation. I would like to compliment Vanguard on hiring such a wonderful young man. Even at the Ultra High Net Worth level- this used to be called "Flagship Select"- the service is now abysmal, even if you have an assigned Relationship Representative who is supposed to pick up the phone without a protracted wait. The Vanguard investment platform is a very good option and we have had a good experience for decades. However, their Personal Advisory Service (PAS) is a terrible service. When we started with Vanguard PAS their system showed that we had 99% odds of reaching our goal. The goal was to leave my wife financially secure after my passing as she is much younger than I. After 2 1/2 years of PAS management we had a less than 1% chance of meeting this goal. I chose PAS because of my tendency to sell stocks when the market looked shaky. However, the money we lost with this losing "time the market" strategy was nothing compared to the money that we lost under the PAS strategy.

After we turned our Vanguard portfolio over to PAS I relaxed and did not pay any attention to the account. Big mistake. In 2022 when the success of the bull market made the news I woke up and saw that our portfolio had not budged during the time that PAS was managing. We had lost over 1 1/2 years of substantial market gains by the time I cancelled PAS. When I called them to cancel the advisor I spoke to wanted to know why I was taking this step. I told him that they had completely missed the bull market and asked why they had invested our funds in some clearly easily predicted losing etfs. Their investment in European bonds was the one I found most disappointing and there were many others. He replied that this was a strategy to spread risk.

When we joined the PAS we filled out a lengthy disclosure of all of our investments. This included our several bond investments as well as investment in the an annuity in TIA which is a guaranteed 3% return fund that is comparable to a bond investment but without the ups and downs that occur when interest rates change. To his comment that the PAS was spreading risk by buying heavily into bond markets my reply is that the PAS managers should have actually have read our investment disclosures and invested only in the market to balance our relatively large bond and bond-like investments.

By the time we left the PAS the market was already on a trajectory that seemed uncatchable. Wrong again. I finally invested and have made tens of thousands of dollars using my own investment strategies. However, I estimate that we lost nearly $100,000 directly by not being in the market in any meaningful way. In the long run our losses will be many times large than that as missing out on a bull market is not something that you can remedy. So, my advice is to steer very clear of Vanguard Personal Advisory Service as their specialty seems to be investing in low return investment vehicles.

They will refuse you help even with all the documentation in front of you and gave them your name and SSN and everything else that identifies you. You need your hire date.

Imagine if someone else has access to your hire date you are basically screwed because they can easily change everything with just that. Which is terrible service to just go off someone’s hire date instead of the other information. Honestly I don’t really care it because that shouldn’t be the only way to get access. After several trouble tickets, work with various technicians on the phone, and an investor issue rep to investigate, it seems Vanguard is aware of the problem but has no idea of when or even if the inability to access one's account will be addressed or remedied.

Obviously this is highly problematic and is not only inconvenient but actually can result in missed trading activities, failure to have access to brokerage account information for tax planning, stock purchases and sales, etc. Never knowing when or if online access is possible is unacceptable and Vanguard's failure to address the known issue after many months shows their lack of concern for their clients and therefore I do not recommend making Vanguard a part of your financial planning.

Monday 8/5 their website was down for "maintenance" first thing in the morning when the market dipped to its lowest in a while. Yet buying the dip still ensued. I read that a ton of others had the same issue and couldn't log in to their accounts. Sign up with them if you want to be cheated. And by the way, their user interface absolutely sucks.

Vanguard was my first choice after doing due diligence and researching other companies Vanguard appeared to be the best and most cost effective and experienced company. I could not be more wrong! After opening up a brokerage account with an inheritance, that account did not make ONE CENT in 31/2 years of Vanguard's "financial advisors "managing my monies. The financial "advisors" I spoke with were uninformed and lacked even the basic knowledge and were unable to articulate anything. Vanguard's website is not user friendly and archaic. The staff are incompetent and wait times to contact them are long. Altogether, a really awful company with no assistance given to their clients/stakeholders.

I was bombarded with numerous phone calls and emails from various agents at Vanguard, even as early as 7:00 am, despite my clear lack of interest. Eventually, I relented and spoke with an agent named Soul who assured me of securing a line of credit for my company. I explicitly stated that I wasn't seeking funds unless it was to expand my inventory, and I emphasized my requirement for low monthly payments and a maximum interest rate of 12% per annum.

Soul promised that with an application and four months of bank statements, he could easily meet these terms. However, his persistence led me to block his number after he continued to call from different lines. He eventually reached out again, pleading for another chance. I relented and provided all requested documents.

Within 24 hours of submission, another representative contacted me with absurd offers: $200,000 for two years at 2.5% monthly interest with weekly payments, or a $100,000 line of credit at 2.45% monthly interest with monthly payments. These terms were completely contrary to what I was assured initially. Frustrated and disappointed, I declined their offers and blocked all further communication. I strongly advise against working with Vanguard to avoid the wasted time and misleading experiences I endured. Recent reviews I've read suggest that many others share similar concerns about their practices.

I would no longer classify Vanguard as a brokerage firm. They were great 20 years ago when I originally opened my 401K with them through the company I worked for at the time. Now, they behave more like used car dealers (no offense if you're a used car dealer). I have no clue how a once highly reputable company could plunge so far, but charging fees and providing atrocious customer service seems to be the only thing they are good at now. First, moving cash from your bank account to Vanguard is like taking a voyage on the Mayflower. It takes forever to land, and even then, Vanguard temporarily freezes the funds. I think it took me a week simply to purchase stock.

Second, I own stock in a foreign company, and when I found out that Vanguard had begun charging a fee for owning foreign stock, I decided it was probably time to move my funds to another broker. I called Vanguard, and the rep told me that if I rolled over my shares, they would be frozen for what sounded like a lengthy period. When I explained that this could cause me to potentially lose a lot of money if my stock fluctuated during the period, the rep essentially shrugged his shoulders. So, I decided to just stay with Vanguard since they made it sound like rolling over my account would take an act of Congress.

Later, I found out that they had begun charging a $100 fee to close an account. They also did not accept my stock dividends when they were issued (which I feel must surely violate some SEC regulation). That's when I decided it was time to go. I contacted my other brokerage firm. They simply asked me for the Vanguard account numbers, extracted my funds from Vanguard, and my shares landed in my new account within a few days unscathed and unfrozen. If you value your investments, stay away from Vanguard.

I told them I consider the incompetence to be intentional and deliberate at this point.

Updated on 07/23/2024: I still do not have access to a brokerage account that I am joint on with my deceased mother. This is day 42. I told them I was filing a police report at the end of the day.

Original Review: I have been trying to get my half of an inherited brokerage account transferred to my name. My brother got his half a month ago. There is always a problem. A wrong SS# so fill out this form, a wrong address, then it will transfer in 3 to 5 business days expect it didn't. Another transfer in 3 to 5 business days and now claiming I asked them to transfer the existing IRA to a brokerage account. Now another 3 to 5 business days, but I already know it won't happen. No one gave them a wrong SS#, no one gave them a wrong address and no one asked them to transfer an existing IRA to a non retirement brokerage account. They invented all these issues,.

If you fortunate enough to have some measure of inheritance but unfortunate enough to have those before you choose Vanguard, here is what will happen. 1) When they are notified of passing they will lock the account so you do not know what is available. You will then be forced to setup a Vanguard Inherited IRA Brokerage Account. This is lengthy and buggy process. While other institutions will quickly cash out your inheritance, Vanguard will initially attempt to setup your mandatory Inherited IRA for immediate re-investment. You will have to spend ~40 minutes with a Vanguard representative to get the account setup in a way that the money will not to immediately back to Vanguard.

    2) Once you set things up you have to wait 5-7 days for the funds to transfer. They won't so you'll have to call in. They will tell you that there was a problem with the setup and have you go through it again. When you ask for email/text updates for account status they will tell you that is not available. 3) The second setup will fail. So, another 5-7 days, and wiser you will call back. You will have to work with a rep to submit the forms a 3rd time. (I spent over 90 minutes on this round in order to get myself and the other beneficiary completely registered and confirmed in the system.) 4) Your 3rd attempt will fail. By now you realize Vanguard is just trying to make whatever $ it can on your inheritance before it has to shift to holding someone else's funds. You'll call back a 4th time. You will end up on hold for at least 15 minutes while the rep "reviews" your account. The rep will then hang up. #notshocked

    5) When you call back the 5th time you will learn that there is some other form that was not filled out. Vanguard could have contacted you that the form was missing after the first call. Instead, they sat on it after repeated rounds until they needed a new reason to delay the funds transfer. 6) Once you complete the suddenly missing form, you will want confirmation that the transfer is taking place. Vanguard will be unable to provide it. You can try to escalate but all of the managers will conveniently be whatever coast you are not calling from. The rep will promise someone will review your case and call back in 24-48 hours.

After a month and almost 4 hours on the phone, Vanguard will still have locked up your inheritance with no payout in site. There will be no way to see the status of your transfer on the account you were forced to setup. If there is a problem, they will not contact you. That is against their policy as it would short-circuit the artificial delays they put on inheritance payouts. If you are considering setting something up for beneficiaries. Do yourself a favor and use anyone/thing/planet than Vanguard. P.S. I wrote 90% of this review while on hold with Vanguard.

I have been a Vanguard client for at least 3 decades. Sadly, after Mr. Bogle left, the company has gone downhill. In the past, advisors were accessible, well trained, and made it clear that their first priority was to support the client. Yet, now the general attitude seems to be: with millions of investors, we are too big to bother with you! There are some exceptions, of course. I was in the end satisfied today having finally gotten through to someone in the investment department who stopped blaming me. It took all morning to decode a message found on my home page and the person at the Helpdesk seemed ill-equipped to deal with basic matters, yet held back in transferring my call.

The next representative on the investment team simply blamed me and held to what he believed to be rigid Vanguard requirements. I called back and, finally found someone who listened to my concerns. He may have solved a problem by suggesting that a fee could be refunded. I say "may" because communication is sometimes so poor, that actions benefitting the client are often delayed or not carried out! I do like Vanguard's mutual funds and decided that it is better not to distribute them into my other accounts. If one can forego any need to communicate with Vanguard or make changes in the account, it is possible to be satisfied with their low fee account. Otherwise, you can easily land in a mire of uncertainty, confusion, and costly delays. It is sometimes difficult to believe you are interacting with a financial institution. I have had better experiences in poorly run discount stores.

What I didn't know is that he had updated some of my profile info on the site, which put a temporary hold on my account (He added an email). When I called back regarding the website questions I had, I was told the hold time would be 20 minutes or I could set up for a call back and that would save my place in line. I waited over an hour and never received a call back.

I called back and choose to hold for the 27 minutes and when associate answered I asked why I didn't receive a call back and she said, 'We have 1-4 business days before we have to call you back!" THAT's NOT WHAT THE RECORDING SAYS! I had questions regarding my profile and she told me that she could not help me until after the registration hold is lifted. I also asked her some general questions and she was EXTREMELY RUDE and said I should ask those questions after the hold is lifted! DO YOURSELF A FAVOR AND DO NOT INVEST WITH VANGUARD! READ THE REVIEWS - THEIR CUSTOMERS SERVICE IS HORRIBLE!!!! Do you want to struggle to get answers to your questions regarding your investments!

I have waited 6 months for them to approve my divorce settlement QDRO. While my ex-husband sits comply in a house I paid for I get to be homeless because of this company. They have a 60 day waiting period and when my 60 days arrived and I’ve called to make sure I get my money on time every week. Then all of the sudden tonight 7/6/23 They said they won’t make that 60 days. My 60 days are over on 7/9/23 and this is the 3rd time I’ve had to wait 60 days and they don’t know when I will get my money: so they are keeping my money as long as they legally can to keep the interest it’s providing for them. I have been very patient with them and now this?

They have no reason that they can say as to what the hold-up is. Nothing ...and I have no idea how long they can legally keep my money from me. It’s a court ordered settlement and it’s a good amount that they don’t want to let go of I’m sure. CEOs must need a bonus this quarter. And to think I was going to leave some to invest with them is a crazy idea. Don’t do it. They steal from you. They are keeping my money that I could have the interest paying to me on instead of them.

Thanks Vanguard. I’m not a young chicken that has time to wait for you to decide to release my funds to me. It doesn’t belong to you anymore so give it to me. It’s time to release it. How hard is it to approve something you’ve had 60 days to figure out. Looks like you need more employees. I guess you can afford it since you’re taking money from people now. How many people has this happened to? I cannot be the only one who keeps getting blow after blow from this horrible company. I would never invest my money with them and I will make sure nobody I know does as well. How long do I have until they have to pay my money out to me? They have to have. Cut off timeframe. They have my paperwork and it’s all correct.

This is a side by side comparison of Vanguard with Fidelity, Schwab, and others. I've had a vanguard account for over twenty years. They always had the lowest fees compared to other brokerages. Now they're just the same as everyone else in terms of fees. Their funds have low fees, but I can buy into them through other brokerages. I prefer online communication for investments. My mother preferred to use the phone. I think Vanguard's portal is cumbersome yet lacking, but that's just my personal opinion. What isn't subjective is the hassle that they are putting me through in order to inherit two accounts from deceased parents.

This season, I've inherited accounts from Fidelity, Vanguard, T Rowe Price, Schwab, a bank, and another investment through a transfer agent. Lucky me, I know. All of the accounts were setup properly. There were no surprises and no hurdles to overcome. Straightforward stuff. I had all documents in order. ALL the other investment firms handled the transfers without issue. Some required this or that, a notary or a medallion, overnight paper or scan and upload. No problem. EXCEPT Vanguard. Oh my. It has been horrible. Almost comical. They tell me their names and that we're on a recorded line and sound very official. After 30 minutes on the phone all that I have is more bad information. Conflicting info. Jeepers.

I'm up to Six phone calls of 30 minutes or more to do something that they could automate. Transfer your IRAs elsewhere. The transfer process is easy enough. The receiving company will do all the work. If you don't mind having some extra fees, go with T Rowe Price or JP Morgan. If you're frugal like me, go with Fidelity or Schwab. Just don't put your kids through estate hell with Vanguard. Or better, just don't die.

More than three weeks later, on 4.26.2023 the transfer has not yet been complete, indeed not even initiated. One would think that with their profits Vanguard would have the manpower to complete such simple transactions. one would think that Vanguard would like to see money transferred to their coffers from other brokerages. If you are want to transfer money into Vanguard, you need to read this review. My sister and I inherited some IRA money from my mother who passed away at the end of 2022. My sister opened 2 inherited IRA account at Vanguard. One for traditional IRA and the other for Roth. My sister initiated the transfer early Jan and received traditional IRA money on 1/17/2023 at Vanguard. However Roth portion of the inherited IRA took a long time. On 2/21/2023, we called TIAA (where mom kept her IRA) to inquire about the transfer and the representative told us the check was sent on 1/6/2023 and he also gave us the check number and the amount. We then called Vanguard. However the representative at Vanguard told us she could not locate the check. She then called TIAA and we were told TIAA will do some research on this check and get back to us.

My sister and I called TIAA on 3/1/2023 and were told that the check sent by TIAA was already cleared by Vanguard on 1/13/2023. We called Vanguard on the same day and the person we spoke to found the check immediately and the money appeared on my sister's account the next day. Due to someone's mistake at Vanguard, my sister lost hundreds of dollar of money in interest. We contacted Vanguard to ask for some sort of resolution today 3/21/2023, the representative from retirement department was extremely rude. He told us "how do you know this is not a mistake made by the other institution?" after admitting the fact that the check did clear on 1/13/2023 and all the information needed to credit my sister's account was provided by TIAA.

He insisted there would be nothing they can do because the money was transferred. That statement is partially correct: the money was transferred to Vanguard but not into my sister's account. Therefore, she lost interest money due to Vanguard mistake. When I asked if there is a complaints department we can write to, he simply said "NONE". Think twice before you transfer your hard earned money to Vanguard.

We ended up working with 3 different Vanguard "Investment Reps" since each time they either stopped responding to emails, provided inaccurate information, or made significant errors that caused us to restart the process. When we called, the customer service reps would tell us the same thing, clearly reading off the screen and unable to provide actual help beyond their templated message. We left voicemails with Managers asking for follow on the poor service their reps were providing. We never heard from the managers, we would just get a call from a new Rep but ran into the same problems.

I'm amazed that a company this large can have such horrible service and clearly show with their actions that they do not care about their customers. Worlds apart (and at very similar price), we accomplished the same goals with Betterment. 3. On 12/27/2022 I called. I asked to invest $100,000 in Delta Airlines stock. The stock was selling at $32 a share. My statement indicated my investment instead was put on a Vanguard money market fund. I called, and was told this was a "settlement fund." Vanguard refused my efforts to speak with a manager, and lied to me stating their tapes did not indicate any Delta investment. I complained to FINRA. They admitted that I was told my investment in Delta was complete, and reluctantly backdated my investment. Vanguard has never allowed me to speak with a senior official despite my repeated requests. I just wasted an hour on the phone trying to do this. I have been trying to resolve an issue with Vanguard since June 7th, 2022. Vanguard made a mistake and put my deposit in the wrong account. It was totally a Vanguard error. Subsequently I have made 5 phone calls to speak to a representative to get this Vanguard error corrected. Each time I was told it would be corrected and as of 6/23/2022 the mistake that Vanguard made has not been corrected so in essence I've been lied to. Their representatives at the lower levels are not competent and will throw ** at you to delay resolution. My next step is a complaint to the SEC. As soon as this situation is corrected, I will be searching for a new brokage firm. Sad as I have been with Vanguard for 20 years, but their customer service has become horrible unless you're giving them money. I contacted Vanguard to roll over my old employer's retirement plan into my new employer's account. This has been an extremely long and painful experience that I would have never had with a competent company. Each time I tried calling the Vanguard Retirement Plan Participants phone line, I was placed on hold for over 2 hours and sometimes 3 hours. The first time a representative finally came to the phone, he was incompetent and gave me a long laundry list of instructions to follow in order to conduct my rollover. It was obvious from his attitude that he didn't give a **.

I followed all of his instruction, dotting all of my I's and crossing all of my T's. The next day I received a voice mail message on my cell phone from Vanguard saying there were additional details that they needed for the rollover that apparently the representative had failed to ask me. So I called back and waited on hold for 3 hours for someone to answer. When I finally spoke to someone, he sends me through another 20 minute laundry list of instructions that he needs me to include in a letter that I have to write and mail to Vanguard.

I have completed several rollovers from former employer retirement plans and have never had one even remotely this complex and time consuming. So I write the letter that he requests and mail it. He tells me that there is nothing else to be done on my end. So I wait. Several days later I receive messages on my Vanguard account saying that I failed to complete several documents that he never told me about. So I go online and have to complete and upload these documents. Then the online account balance of my old retirement plan goes from tens of thousands of dollars to zero. I assume this is because the rollover is in progress.

Two weeks later I receive a distribution check of $419 in the mail, one of two checks that I was supposed to have received through the rollover. But the other check of tens of thousands of dollars does not arrive. So I call Vanguard back and wait on hold for 2 hours for someone to answer. The guy who answers is completely incompetent and says he can't help me because I don't have an account with Vanguard. I try to explain that I am in the process of rolling over a retirement plan and never received the second check. He refuses to listen and insists on transferring me to someone else. I have now been on hold for an hour and a half waiting to talk to someone. It really should not be this difficult to speak to professional, knowledgeable staff in a retirement company. She proceeded to tell me that she couldn't help me because she doesn't handle employer accounts. Why did I get routed to her when I had already entered all of my account information????

I tell her that before she transfers me that I want to tell her exactly why I am calling so that I don't have to wait on the phone for another hour unnecessarily. I can tell she really doesn't give a crap and I'll probably be transferred to someone else who "can't help me". So she "transfers" me and about 30 minutes later the call just ends. I spent an hour and a half waiting for nothing and now I am back on the line which is telling me that my estimated wait time is another 40 minutes. It would take pages to review all of the ways Vanguard -- once the industry leader -- has fallen to last place in supporting individual investors. I still have a Vanguard account because it is more efficient to retain a few old Vanguard funds there. I never look forward to transactions at Vanguard because they haven't taken the time to provide the information you would naturally want to see when you are trading. The last time I sent an email with a question, it took them seven days to respond. I gave up on phone calls years ago. The website provides very little investor information, which means they are not paying for it.

Contrast this to Fidelity where it can take months just to master all of the intelligence, expensive analyst reports (all free), investing tools such as stock and ETF screening software, dozens of event trigger and notification rules, tools, paid memberships to external services, modeling, portfolio analysis, profit/loss analysis, retirement analysis, and other forms of decision-support they provide at no cost. The Fidelity system is accessible via web browser, smart phone and tablet apps, and via a sophisticated PC application that adds advanced capabilities for the most serious of investors.

In addition, Fidelity can provide full banking, credit and debit card, bill paying, HSA and college savings accounts and even free bank wires to give you one-stop financial services. It integrates all of this into a single dashboard. Fidelity also has advanced account security lockdown systems -- so good they can occasionally be frustrating if you are not behaving in your typical manner. I don't have need to call much but when I have called Fidelity, I get a smart and personable individual who is obviously well trained and enjoying his or her work.

Every conversation included human interaction such as a comment on the weather, asking about my day and sharing theirs, etc. Nice people. None of this is provided or at most is provided in a token way by Vanguard. Vanguard is operating on the cheap and it shows. Given the alternatives, I really can't recommend them for anything, including their own funds, some of which are good but most of which are now available from competitors via similar funds at even lower costs.

Beware, beware, beware. Vanguard's customer service is an embarrassment. First, it is impossible to speak to a Vanguard representative. Once upon a time, Vanguard gave customers a personal service adviser. For reasons that were never explained (read Vanguard trying to save money), it eliminated advisers. When you call the general number, endless wait times. Second, Vanguard insists you email your concerns or questions. Big, huge, mistake. After you email Vanguard, you will wait weeks to receive a completely non-responsive answer. Third, not only is the email response non-responsive, many emails contain typos, misspellings, and completely false information (e.g. our Vanguard email system is unable to find previous emails it purportedly sent you).

Fourth, when you finally demand to speak to a supervisor, a supervisor will eventually call you back but the supervisor leaves you a message but purposely fails to give you a call back number. Fifth, after you spend hours waiting on the phone to find this so-called supervisor, he listens to you complain about lousy customer service and says Vanguard is aware of the problems.

Duh, what are you going to do about lousy customer service now that you know? Answer: We are aware of complaints. This is the equivalent of fire department responding to a 911 call about a fire by telling you we are aware of the fire but have no idea or plan how to put out the fire. Come on Vanguard, if this the best you can do, you do not deserve any investor to invest their life savings with your institution. Luckily, I was able to remove all my family's funds from Vanguard but that relatively simple task was handled so poorly by Vanguard. I truly fear for the rest of the current Vanguard investors who still have funds there. Run, run, run as fast as you can from Vanguard. DO IT NOW.

The mutual funds are fine. Low fees. The Website for investors is horrible and nearly impossible to find anything, e.g., individual performance of your investments. By far the worst aspect of Vanguard is their inability to interact with customers in a timely or professional manner. Wait times are 1 hour plus if you call in, and you will likely be transferred to the wrong person or department and waste a colossal amount of time again. I have sent checks for rollovers to the company and they just send them back with nonsensical explanations--like what account to deposit in when it's written on the check. I literally just destroyed 3 checks because the trouble to deposit them wasn't worth the amount on the checks. Finding simple information for a rollover is nearly impossible and don't even try to speak with anyone. They highly discourage it once you call in, and then make you wait for, what so far, seems to be an unlimited amount of time.

Honestly, I don't think anyone would ever pick up the call no matter how long I waited. Currently, I was told 20 minutes, waited 30, was answered, then transferred to another department where they said the wait would be an additional 40 minutes. I've currently been waiting almost an hour and the actual voice message that is play every 15 seconds keeps repeating "your estimated wait time is 50 minutes" even though I already waited more than an hour. It's a hideous experience. Super frustrating, and you have NO OPTIONS but to wait. If they would improve the Website, I'd prefer to do this online, but it's not possible for me to navigate the options to find the answers I require for my rollover. In each case the advisor fumbles through and has to date been able to give me a clear picture of where my money goes and why.

At Vanguard, they don't seem to have an efficient mechanism to identify and fix the problem. No point person. Recent example, On September 30th at 10:30am EST Advisor Johnathan Lynn calls from Vanguard and quote " I have here I'm supposed to call you..? " He never read the notes that would've told him to prepare... he showed zero interest in providing me with ANY review of my investments. When I recited the point of the call... he remained silent. I truly believe he was intoxicated.

For the ensuing 4 hours I got transferred from advisor to advisor and none of them know what they are doing. Each puts you on hold, averaging 45 minutes per call - which may explain why everyone else has to wait to speak with someone. They are doing their "research" to answer your question, and then give you an answer that makes no sense. I then asked to reschedule with a Crystal ** on the phone. Aggressively reminding me they are busy and will try to reschedule another meeting... I paid for a service they do not produce. Call back the next day - same routine: cannot get anyone on the phone, someone calls you back and has no clue how to help you, does "research" and then comes up with a new nonsensical reason why I can't speak to a supervisor to remedy this issue...

Then enter the Thug from Vanguard Javier **. Claiming he's a supervisor he disregards my concerns and tells me no one can talk to me...! He called me back to tell me no one can go over my account through a service I paid for... I asked to speak to his supervisor, he refused to honor my request because "he's going to give you the same answer"... The balls on that guy to back up his own lie! I called back 2 hours later and left a message to speak with the Advisory Team supervisor's supervisor...trying to get up the chain of command.

The next day Javier calls questioning my motives and demanding to know what I'm going to ask his Super??.. His audacity and belligerence drove me to just hang up and make another call to cancel my service agreement and receive a refund for the 4th quarter. I have yet to get any Vanguard supervisor to call... an official communication my requests has been granted.

The Vanguard employees have the intelligence of rocks, and that is being kind. Did they finish high school, let alone elementary school? It would even be far better to outsource these initial calls to Pakistan or Uzbekistan than deal with these morons. Repeated calls and repeated statements verifying the same information over and over again, then long hold times. At the initial call, one has to resort to being belligerent to gain contact with someone who is not an idiot.

In addition, there is no place on the Vanguard website to register a customer complaint: Crystal ** needs to go back to working at McDonalds. Javier **, what organized crime family did this guy come from, condescending, self-entitled bully who intimidates the client into submission or in my case to just hang up the phone! I have requested a refund for the advisory fee and a cancellation effective immediately. NO officer from Vanguard has been willing to comply with my repeated requests.

I had over 20,000$ with Vanguard when they sent me emails discussing my options once I switched employers. I chose to close one of my accounts and agreed to a one time 25$ rollover fee. Vanguard only completed a partial rollover and left a portion of my balance in the 401k. They then told me I had to pay an additional rollover fee in excess of 17% on the remaining balance if I wanted it transferred. When I called in no one in customer service could solve the problem and they continually told me the only way to get the money rolled over was to pay the 17% fee. Make sure to be careful when receiving correspondence from Vanguard as it can be deceptive if you do not do prior research on their suggestions. For reference my Vanguard Case number related to this was **.

Their customer service says that shortest wait times are between 8-10am and 5-8pm EST. I called at 5pm and have been on hold for almost 2 hours. I plan to hang up at 7pm, so who knows if there's anyone answering phones on the other end of this call.

I have attempted 7-8 times to get my online account open and functioning. I get the run around no results, just excuses. This cost me money as I could not make trades when I wanted to. I have spent hours on the phone trying to fix this with 6 different customer service agents and a manager, who is rarely available.

In 2008 Vanguard sent me a check for approx. $400 when they owed me $500. This is a legal trick that insurance companies use to cheat people out of their money. They failed to send me the check for the full amount after numerous calls. After waiting years for the check in 2017 I called them and asked them, where is my money? They said they don't have it and it's not listed on file. After two years, dozens of hours on hold and getting the run around, they FINALLY admitted that the money existed. Then they sent me forms and stalled the payment in every way possible. Finally the $500 check was in hand. They offered no interest, no fees to compensate me for a decade late payment. For 10 years they loaned out my money, collected interest on it and never gave me a penny. Do not trust vanguard.

I have been investing in stocks and mutual funds since 1977. I bought my first Vanguard fund in 1984. Right now I am in about 20 mutual funds (regular accounts, IRAs, Roth IRAs). About ½ of my funds are Vanguard funds. I am happy with the performance of the Vanguard funds I am in. I am VERY UNhappy with Vanguard’s customer service. In the last six months I have done two simple things (wire money, rollover a Roth IRA to Vanguard from a non-Vanguard account) and both times there have been problems requiring several calls.

I will spare you the details but 1) it is not always easy to reach a rep- they may give you the opportunity for a callback or they may keep you on indefinite hold. 2) The reps were nice but on four occasions Vanguard reps told me things about their process/system that were not true, 3) Vanguard failed to initiate the Roth IRA rollover until I called them back a month later to find out the rollover status. 4) Their software system is not as intuitive and easy to use as I think it should be. Vanguard was migrating their system during this time, but I do not consider that an adequate excuse for their poor performance.
