We had Petro install a new boiler and water heater in 2021 for a cost of over $20k. Over the 2.5 years since, the system has given us constant trouble, either failing to start up heat, producing temps at the faucet of 157 degress, blowing water out of the water tank onto the basement floor. They have sent maybe 10+ technicians over this time and I have on ring video one of their technicians tell me that the system is a lemon - I forwarded this video via email to them which is when they got the manufacturer involved.
Most companies would replace a lemon - not Petro it seems. All along they were nothing but polite and professional - until this week when over the xmas holiday we had no hot water for periods until I reset the system in the basement and even then it can take varying amounts of time to heat the water - not convenient when a 5 year old is readying for bed.
We had a Petro tech come out and basically he refused to admit there was an issue and even told me a light was on when in fact I had video of what the light should look like when on. The hot water did come on but now it's off again - he basically wants it to be broken at the time of the visit but his dismissive attitude and his inability to listen to the customer's explanation and at least try to diagnose the issue is just plain unprofessional. Because of his attitude I will be looking to do two things - 1. sue Petro under the lemon law (thank you tech for admitting it to my face on Ring door camera but the dozen service calls should also show it as such) and 2, get another provider. $20k+ along with annual service contracts and buying heating oil off them at high prices should get you better than this.

This is the second time in two years that they have failed to deliver oil while we are on automatic delivery. What’s worse is how they treat their longstanding customers. We get the runaround and their service calls have been continually delayed. I would definitely look to other providers. This company should not be in business.

Petro purchased our oil provider and furnace maintenance company in fall of 2023. After servicing our furnace for the first time it malfunctioned two week later in January at 6:00 am. We called the 24 hour "emergency" line and waited 45 minutes for a representative, who informed us that they were having a "safety" meeting that morning and would not be able to get anyone out until 1 pm even though the temp was 13. Eventually our CO detector went off and the fire dept. responded. When Petro finally showed up, the tech told us that the wrong valves had been installed during the previous service. "Life Endangering" incompetence and "POOR" customer service summarize our experience with Petro. We have a new oil and service provider.

The experience I have had with Petro is awful. I have had a technician come to my house twice to work on the same problem costing me 1,000 and it’s still not fixed. Called again for them to come out and address and they did not show up during their timeframe. No updates, no phone calls. When I called to see what was occurring, the response was the technician is still at another worksite. Not my problem, send someone else, at least update your customer. Absolutely terrible customer service.

My oil contract expires this month. I called Petro on 11/27/24 for pricing. I was told I would get a call back. I called again 11/29 and 11/30. Still no call back six days later and counting. Bye bye business. I admit their service department has been solid but their sales group is useless. I’m sure I would have received a ridiculously high quote anyway.

I closed my account with Petro in April 2024 and went with another oil company. For 6 months I was getting calls from Petro which I did not answer because I assumed they were trying to get me back as a customer. Today I got a letter from a debt collector claiming I owed Petro $479.96. I called Petro and spoke with Kelly in customer service. She checked online and told me that the charge is a mistake. I was wrongly charged, because I am no longer a customer, for a service contract for 2024-2025. Do not do business with Petro!!

I have had an exceedingly difficult experience with Petro. They installed a heat pump in our home, but made clear before the installation that we would need to still use our existing fuel oil-powered radiator as a back-up in case of severe winter conditions, and we therefore would need to keep our existing Nest thermostat running in addition to the new heat pump thermostat. However, when they installed the new heat pump, they completely disconnected our Nest thermostat and have not been responding to multiple emails to arrange for the Nest thermostat to get reconnected. Furthermore, when the heat pump was installed, they did not cover or move our furniture and we found debris (including mouse droppings) over our belongings. Finally, directors at the company do not respond to inquiries, so issues continue to remain unresolved.

We signed up with Petro a year ago and were initially satisfied with their delivery and service but encountered no issues. However, due to rising costs and a significant increase in their SmartPay plan, we decided not to renew for the coming year. We received our settlement balance, which we were fully aware of and ready to pay.
The day after canceling our service, their Credit department began calling us daily to demand final payment—despite the balance not being due for another week. When I inquired if we would continue receiving daily calls, the representative, Michael, responded with an inappropriate and dismissive attitude, rudely confirming that the calls would continue. This level of customer service is both unprofessional and inconsiderate.
Be cautious of their "special plans," as they can be misleading. Petro initially offers an attractive monthly payment plan, but when it's time for renewal, they often claim your usage exceeded expectations. This leaves you with a tough choice: pay significantly more than expected (sometimes 2.5 times more) or face an enormous balance if you cancel. To make matters worse, once you cancel, they waste no time hounding you daily for payment, regardless of the due date. I strongly advise against falling for their offers—they seem great upfront but come with hidden pitfalls.

If you get help with paying for oil during the winter months due to hardship, go elsewhere! They will say they "never received it." Meanwhile the place that distributes the checks says that they did send it and have proof of it. You will never get the oil when you need it, and if you don't have the money and time to hire a lawyer then they win. Where did the money go?!

Petro oil is very expensive. At half a tank (275) being over 1,000 if you do not pay, You will freeze. There is no loyalty past a late payment. In addition, they can refuse to give you oil if they suggest that your tank is not good enough for them. They have a sister company that comes and installs a new one. How convenient of them and not suspicious at all.
A temporary tank costs 1,000 - but a smaller tank cost 150- Only found that out after I spoke to the 20th representative. I have honestly not had heat and will never work with this organization. Not only did I have a payment plan, to pay this expensive oil- they still brought me to collections. I will scream it at the top of my lungs. They do not care about your situation, they are in it for the money. And they also steal from you. But you are going down Petro. Every second I breathe it will be to remind people about how horrible this organization is.

STAY AWAY. Horrible horrible company -like many other reviewers same issues. Their prices are a rip off and their service contracts are useless. Paid $300 for Furnace contract and still got charged $455 for a minor repair job that took less than 1 hour. Their prices are over $1+ more per gallon than other companies in the area. Interesting fact is Meehan is their "sister" company which I didnt know. After getting ripped off I started calling around for pricing and Meehan quoted me $1.40 less per gallon. Same company and very very different pricing.

Jan 4, 2024. This is a most difficult review to write. Petro field service can provide expertise and service that is top end. The perpetually weak spot is in the "service management" (SM) area. While the customer call center excels at providing timely responses, the SM area can be extraordinarily weak in terms of providing solutions. Lack of field experience is the weak link here.
The instructions from SM to field staff apparently consists of delay and obfuscate. A simple flow check replacement (which has been done in 30 minutes previously) results in delays that had required my watching space heaters used to heat my main living area overnight. This is due to a circulator that ran continuously but its zone not reaching temperature. After today's weak as water response I find myself up yet again overnight despite a service contract and 33 years of loyalty. This is all part of the service contract which in and of itself would benefit from some added clarity - although this is not an issue here. NY may want to take notice of the above and try to learn from the experience as I have. The potential is great - the failure is truly unfortunate.

Very very knowledgeable! Been seeing them do the included tune ups for years! Special thanks today to Petro Oil boiler mechanic Patrick technician # ** today for spending the extra time and explaining everything and also given the advice on my next home which has an old steam Boiler.
Thank you Petro for sending Patrick! I'll be sticking with Petro for the Service! They take care of their oil customers and won't leave you in the cold! I don't know how I let this company suck me into a service contract for my boiler and to buy oil from them. No need for me to talk about their prices as most of the reviews are about that. I was without heat for almost two days. It was spring not the middle of winter. I tried talking to the service manager who they say his name is Richard. I asked for his last name but was told they couldn't give it to me. I asked to speak to him but was told he didn't answer his phone. So Richard if you read this give me a call. I'm seventy seven years old and would have to spend too much time telling you how frustrating it was to try to get my burner fixed. I'm not doing this to get even but to keep other people from making the same mistake. I called another company that came in two hours. Good luck!

I have been a customer for 3 yrs now. My contract was due to renew at the cost of $377. They have tacked on about $100 each yr to just have this contract renewed. This and every contract offered ceiling price protection in exchange for a delivery every 2 weeks. Come to find out today, they do not offer anything but automatic deliveries. I have paid their ceiling price 90% of the time. We are talking more than $4.50/gallon. Although my contract expired, I was still on automatic deliveries.
My tune ups have been done but I suspect that an independent tune up would be benifical. Why? Because the new furnace I bought a yr and 4 months ago goes through just as much oil as my 30 ur old burner did. (I bought this from Petro and was installed by them.) My proof? The estimated smart pay rate justified by my average spending amount this past year that posted on my account. Last year my smart pay rate was $450/month...Today it was $534 a month. I cancelled my account today. I can get far less expensive oil delivered on demand without the extra money given to an oil company that states they do all this for their customers. They service themselves better than their customers. Do yourself a favor and read all the reviews before signing any contract. Wish I had.

Finally get ahold of someone again two days ago who was very rude and was told I would get a call back again. The lady called me back today was immediately standoffish and not even referring to the right instance. When I pointed that out got even more snippy. Basically told me they will not make a simple phone call to new owners to ask for them to pay for the services we paid for. Told me it’s my problem. Used them for 7 years as a loyal customer. The service manager would bug the ** out of me and my tenants for them to sign up stating that my refund wouldn’t come until then so finally the tenants opened their account (even though they didn’t want to go with them but then I wouldn’t receive my refund through Petro and they'd have to pay separately).

I have been with Petro since 2014. Their ethics are questionable since Jan. 2020. The reason I even did the extensive research I did is because I received, for the first time ever, a bill for settlement of $721.49. I have always purchased the budgeted, ceiling plan, knowing that I would pay a bit more for it but willing to for the peace of mind. Below you will find facts, I am very detailed in the event Petro sees this review and feels I am some how unfair when I make my final assumption.
Facts:
1) Never before have I been in the red at settlement time, I had always paid more than I had used.2) Prior to 2020 the difference between my price/gal. delivery charge and the state weekly avg. was never > $.53, beginning in Jan. 2020 price/gal. consistently > $.90 over state avg. every delivery.
3) At the beginning of 2020 Petro made 3 deliveries over a 6 week period 2 in Jan. and 1 in Feb. leading to a total of 4 deliveries for 2020, typically I have 2 except for 2018 when there were 3.
4) Yes, I worked from home for the majority of 2020, still am. However, I also had someone move out at the beginning of 2020 who had lived and worked from my home so, if anything, I probably ultimately used less.
5) Yes, 2020 was a little colder than 2019 but certainly not colder than every year since 2019 (For a little brevity, I won't list out all the avg. temperatures).
One can only assume that the excessive differential in price/gal. and the ridiculousness of making 3 deliveries in six weeks, is because oil is a global market. Petro was well aware of what was coming around the planet - a pandemic. Rather than risk making deliveries when the market dropped out, when it was uncertain how long it would last, Petro chose to feed off its customers. It's the same drive behind the pricing. Rather than risk losses from lower market oil prices, potential inability of customers to make payments due to job losses, the lowered need for oil by companies due to shutdowns, Petro, a company more than large enough to have well established reserves for a situation like this decided to make a money grab at the expense of their loyal customers. Just be aware of the type of company they are if choosing to do business with them, once my contract expires, I can assure you I am done.

I have been a Petro Gas customer for less than a month after buying a new home and I have already had the worst experience. The safety check for our tank was a mess and they tried to charge us a couple hundred dollars to move the tank when it was perfectly fine where it was. I gave them the benefit of the doubt and followed through with the second safety check. That went fine and the tank was filled a few days after that. I paid the invoice promptly and we thought we were all set. A few days after that another charge for $200+ dollars showed up on our account. They said this was for gas in the tank that was paid for by the previous homeowners. I spoke to the previous owners and they never received a refund for this charge and when I signed up as a new customer they never told me that we were responsible for the gas that was already in the tank.
Right now they are trying to double charge us which is horrible business practice, and trying to handle this with customer service has been an absolute nightmare. They are also telling me that I have to work this out with the old homeowners (which I already did) and tell them to call Petro Gas to resolve this. How this has become my job is beyond me. I wouldn't waste your time signing up with this company. Their level of concern for customers is low and their business practices are fishy.

Normally our deliveries have shown up when our tank gets to half full, the last couple have been delayed till down to a quarter or less...thus requiring more oil to be delivered. Our delivery today of 196.8 gallons at a price of $3.639 for a total of $716.16 is excessive to say the least. Petro Oil (Maryland) has been a lesson in the fine art of frustration. They end every call with "Remember we are available 24 hours a day, 7 days a week." Well it took two and a half weeks to come a work on my furnace (and we have a service contract with them!). They sent a technician not once, but twice who didn't have the correct parts, even though the first technician sent detailed notes about what was needed. They cancelled their service call three separate days. Finally it was repaired and the repair man had to google research (which I am guessing I was billed for time he spent in research because he didn't know how to do his job) how to connect to our Nest (only after stating originally he thought they were not compatible and we would have to get a new system).
Next I get an outrageous bill for them with just a total amount - no break down of where the costs come from (i.e. parts vs. service). I have called three times trying, in vain, to speak with a service manager or a field service supervisor. They cannot be reached and leave notes in my file that they've reached out to me, but mysteriously I have no calls at all on my phone that indicate this. Who is their boss? Do the supervisors have a supervisor I can speak with? "Not to my knowledge." So, I cannot even talk with someone beyond the supervisor who can actually help me. Hence my summary ~ considering Petro - RUN, run away!!

I cancelled my contract with this greedy company. The fee to do so is three hundred ninety nine dollars. It's worth it. I'll save at least one thousand dollars this year. They give a ceiling price but that is the actual price they charge. The last fill up was one dollar twenty cents a gallon more than elsewhere.

We have been with Petro since we first purchased our home almost 4 years ago. But I won’t be renewing my contract with them. All those people that say call people fools for using Petro are right. The contract is only good for tune ups and those appointments need to be booked at least a month or 2 in advance. The emergency repairs are useless. My furnace had issues two years ago and Petro took so long to send someone that my pipes burst. Cost me thousands in repairs.
The final straw was the most recent delivery. Oil prices have dropped dramatically since the Covid pandemic. My delivery in November 2020 was $2.95 per gallon. Every other oil delivery company is charging around $1.45. My bill was $750 when it should have been half that. Everyone is having a rough time financially and otherwise right now. But not Petro. They’re profiting off the low oil prices and could care less about their customers. Anyone thinking about signing a contract with Petro should think twice!

Just received my first refill the year. Got charged 2.05 a gallon. A quick google search shows that the rate for most oil companies today is about $1.44 a gallon. That's a huge overcharge. I will be cancelling as soon as the contract expires. What they are doing is criminal. I'd strongly advise to use a local provider to save literal hundreds of dollars a month. I havent called to address this yet, but reading other reviews I doubt it will make a difference.

For 40 years I stuck with these folks. Service wasn't always reliable. I paid a lot over the years for 24/7 service, but pretty much never needed it. So now my heat is out. I just end up in an endless phone chain. They really should have a dedicated line for contract owners. This is false advertising. If only I could have all those big 24/7 contract payments back!

My contract for the Ceiling Plan is renewing at the end of September. In the middle of August I started receiving calls from Petro to renew my plan and the first offer they put on the table, which was claimed to be their absolute best rate, was $3.65/gallon ceiling with a first delivery price of $3.25/gallon. As a point of reference, non-contract cash delivery price from other competitive oil companies in the area was $1.60 /gallon at the time. I'm aware of the game Petro plays and told them the rate was too high and to call back when they had a better offer. The following break down is when I spoke to Petro and the offers they made, keeping in mind that every offer was the 'absolute lowest they can go':
- 8/26/2020 First offer $2.89 ceiling w/ $2.65 first delivery. By end of call they were down to $2.59 ceiling w/ $2.36 first delivery and $50 loyalty credit
- 8/28/2020 Final offer $2.39 ceiling w/ $1.89 first delivery and $50 loyalty credit.
On the 8/26/2020 call the representative was getting frustrated with me continuing to state that they can bring the price lower. I assume the speech she gave me was scripted to make the customer feel like Petro actually cares, stating she understands these are hard economic times for everyone and Petro is doing everything they can to help their customers and this is the lowest price they can go. I again told her to bring the price lower. Two days later the call was from a different Petro group called the Loyalty Work Group II who brought the price even lower.
On 9/1/2020 I thought I had reached a point where they potentially wouldn't go any lower and requested a call to renew the contract. Upon reading me the terms of the contract, which I was required to verbally agree to, the Loyalty Work Group agent told me the ceiling price of $2.39/gallon, $50 loyalty credit and a first delivery of $1.99/gallon. I told her to stop reading the offer terms. She had increased the price of the first delivery by $0.10/gallon when the market cash rate had actually dropped to $1.55/gallon. It occurred to me that no matter what the market does, Petro will immediately raise my price per gallon to the ceiling after my first delivery no matter what prices are in the market.
Petro is dishonest, greedy, unethical, deceitful and does not care about you or any of its customers. It is a money making machine and will do whatever it takes to lock you in to unreasonably high pricing. Buyer beware, they have a great legal team who has ensured their terms and conditions keep them from following any market pricing due to 'operating costs' and they will charge you as much as they possibly can no matter what the market does. I will be shopping elsewhere for my oil and I hope you do too.

Petro delivered oil to my residence in East Greenwich, RI on March 18th 2020 at $2.799 a gallon without me requesting it. This was the day when the oil prices were at a historic low and the average cash price of heating oil on this day was around 1.65. When contacted, they responded that their oil prices fluctuate a lot and the price on that day was the correct price. When I told them that the lowest cash price on this day was 1.35 and the next highest price was 2.15, they told me that they offer superior service and that's why they charge a premium price. I am aware they always charge more than other local suppliers, but charging 50-100% than the other suppliers is just not fair.
These are tough times when the economy is tanking and hundreds of thousand of people are losing their jobs because of Covid19, but Petro doesn't care. It delivers oil (when you have not requested a delivery) at unfair prices just because they know you will do the right thing and pay your bills. I don't want this to happen to others like me. Is there a grievance redressal body I can report this to and stop this from happening again?

Petro allowed an account to be opened in my name for home oil without my knowledge or permission. I found out about the account being opened only after I got a notice from Transunion that a hard inquiry was made on my credit account. When I called Transunion and told them I did not authorize this, I was told to contact Petro and if necessary to file a report with the police. I was also told that to get the hard inquiry removed from my credit report, Petro would have to supply a letter acknowledging that they made a mistake.
I found out from Petro that the account was opened by a male (I am female) over the phone -- no one had the sense to ask to speak to me to get my permission, they were too interested in selling an oil contract to care if this was ethical! I immediately told them to close the account and to feel free to siphon any oil out of the tank they delivered. They chose not to do this and harass me! It took months of phone calls back and forth with Petro, a lot of misinformation that thankfully Transunion representatives helped me with, until I finally got a letter from Petro acknowledging that this account was opened without my knowledge.
This letter was submitted to Transunion, the hard inquiry was removed from my account and there is NO RECORD OF PETRO on my credit report as a creditor! However, Petro has bombarded me with bills over and over. I have called on numerous occasions to ask them to leave me alone, that I am not responsible for the account, it was their negligence and they need to straighten out their salesperson! By far the worst company I have ever dealt with. My oil tank cracked when Petro did a full delivery. When I got home I noticed the small leak. I called Petro and a tech came out and put a temp. patch to hold until the other technicians come and empty the tank and install a temporary tank outside. At this point it's getting late in the night and this is all occurring.
When the other technicians finally arrive the original tech leaves. The two technicians then do their work and then come to us barely speaking English and tell us that they can't get our boiler to stop and that I will need to contact Petro. I questioned them because I assumed they were from Petro. I then I had to call Petro and tell them what happened. Petro had no idea who they sent to my house and they asked me if I got their name from their sweatshirts. I didnt think I needed to do that because I trusted that they were Petro. Then another technician had to come back and get the work done and that technician stated that he couldnt believe the work they did because it wasnt done well and the fix was simple.
At this point all technicians have left and we had the temp tank working and heat and hot water back. At no time did anyone tell us about any changes due to safety or delivery stops. I called because I noticed we were low on oil and I've been paying my monthly delivery and they told me that the automatic delivery didnt apply to the temp tank. Wouldnt that have been nice to know. They then delivered 10gl which only lasted a few days. I called and they delivered 10 gl once more.
At this point it was Christmas time. I called them again and let them know my husband was away and I had a toddler at home and they said they can no longer deliver oil until we purchased a new tank. At no point were we given a time frame or told about the safety hazard. We had to move out of the house for a few weeks until we came up with a plan and ended up converting our house to gas. I called Petro to cancel our contract and tell them that their service was terrible and they didnt help me at all. All the supervisor kept telling me was that she couldnt imagine that no one would tell me that it's unsafe. After all of that they are still charging me $400 for cancelling the contract. DO NOT GO TO PETRO!!!!

We used Petro for a year but since this is the first time we’ve owned a home with oil heating, I wanted to explore other companies to determine that the price is fair. The cost was a lot and our usage stemmed to be a lot, and we have no barometer to compare services. I had one last service with Petro at the beginning of winter before my contract expired, then called and canceled. Customer service was nice, and I was all set. Then about a couple weeks later, I received a bill tied to my last fill up with a renewal fee. I called again to confirm I canceled, and was transferred to the same sales manager where she confirmed, "Oh sorry..yes, we have canceled and they’ll remove that charge. So sorry."
Weeks later, I receive a letter that since I haven’t renewed, they will be putting me on a variable plan (indicating essential I still haven’t canceled). I have to call again and get transferred to the same person who tries to tell me it’s an automated letter and not manual, and so sorry about that. What difference does it make if it’s automated or manual? It’s a letter coming from petro that indicates the status of my account regardless. Throughout this, I’ve yet to receive a notice by email or mail indicating I’ve canceled- despite asking for it; yet, I’ve received notices and emails about continued services, invoices, happy holidays, etc.
I also can’t find anything on the website allowing me to submit a complaint or my intentions to stop services in writing. It all has to be by phone; hence, my writing this on Consumer Affairs to try to document this. It all just doesn’t seem right, which honestly has turned me off with this company and makes me not want to do business with them. We are still in the market and haven’t settled on a new company, but this behavior is disconcerting to us.

Funny how nothing ever seems to be covered. That is the good thing about Petro. Their premier service contract is really very good. Everything always seems to be covered. I never had a dispute with it. Yes, their prices are high. If you are looking for prices of COD oil you are not going to get it. The small companies are just as bad. Sadly, if you can get a decent prices like maybe 2.99-3.29 per gallon with Petro, I'd grab it unless you want to freeze if your boiler breaks down.

I have been a customer for a number of years starting with company's Petro purchased. Everything was going good until I had them "tune" up my furnace in 1999. Six things happened: The first service tech tuned it up but it kept tripping the reset switch. The second tech came out and effectively redid everything that the first tech did. Reset button still tripped. The third tech caused the furnace to catch on fire. If I hadn't been there it may have burned my house down. Fortunately, I turned off the emergency switch. After the fire department left, a fourth tech was called and he rebuilt the furnace parts so that we would have heat. The furnace was very loud when it came on so I called and reported this. They sent a fourth tech, who said to me, "I'm not sure why I am here." He did nothing.
Finally, I requested a supervisor who I thought should have been concerned back when his tech caused a fire. He FINALLY came out with an experienced Tech who found a lot of problems with the rebuild and corrected them. The supervisor then told me to call them if I had any issues with the furnace. I called a month later and was told the supervisor would call me. I waited for two weeks and then called again. He finally returned my call and when I told him of the problem I was having, he told me that he HAD TO CHECK MY SERVICE CONTRACT. I couldn't believe it. They caused the fire and told me this. I told him to forget it and have since moved to another company. I have had bad service before but never like this. Beware.

The reason why this company has such a poor reputation with so many customers is simple...They will rob you blind. With Petro, you will pay hundreds & hundreds & hundreds of dollars more than the customers of an average competitor, for the same exact thing. Unfortunately it is not only their outrageous prices that make them such a poorly rated company, it's also the way they do business.
For example, Petro offers an "Automatic Oil Delivery" contract, in which they lock you in at a capped price for a couple of years. They assure you that your price per gallon will never exceed that price. Even better is that they promise you will pay the lower price, if the market drops and oil is currently selling for cheaper. To most, this sounds like a win win. Unfortunately, Petro will ALWAYS tell you that the current price for their oil is higher than your locked in rate. Even if every other company in your area is charging $1.99 less per gallon. The most pathetic part is that when you bring this to their attention. They feed you some line about how their services and oil is so superior, that paying $200 more per delivery is to be expected.

We had Petro oil burner service and oil delivery for 20 years. The people that we bought the house from were using them and we continued. The service was good as far as delivery of oil and burner service. Recently I retired and was looking for ways to save money. I looked up what the current average oil price was and I called Petro to see what they were charging and it turned out to be over a dollar more per gallon than the current average price. I called and asked them if they could please bring the price somewhere in line with the current average. The lady said she would look into it and call back tomorrow. She never called back.
Over the next few days I shopped for a different company and I found one that was well rated and with a good price. I told the new company to start to deliver oil. I called Petro to discontinue delivery and oil burner service. Then the Petro lady had all sorts of deals to retain customers. Even then the price wasn't competitive. I've been using the new company for 6 months and have been very happy. Save yourself money and do not use Petro.

Thinking of signing up with Petro for fuel oil delivery? Think again and proceed with caution. Their contracts “protecting” you from high fuel prices in fact guarantee you WILL pay high prices. Commit to a price cap and you’ll soon find, as I did, that you are paying 60 cents, 90 cents even over $1.50 a gallon more than the average market price for oil. It seems even when average fuel prices are low, Petro prices their oil just under the cap you have agreed to.
Each time I received a delivery during the past heating season and found the per gallon price to be significantly higher than those shown on the Connecticut State DEEP list of Connecticut Regional Retail Heating Oil Prices I called Petro to ask if there had been a pricing error. I was told Petro is a large, high quality, full service company and therefore worth the extra cost. Petro is NOT that special, oh and their service contract prices are exorbitant too. My advice, shop elsewhere, it is easy to find better value for oil and service.

Updated on 11/15/2019: I spoke with the manager here in Connecticut and he informs me that I am paying an increased price (.70-$1.00 a gallon more) well above what other companies in my area charge based on the following facts (his facts):
2. Petro offers a multitude of service plans and this makes my costs higher even though my unit is new and I do not subscribe to any of their service plans. I only ask that they deliver oil to my home at the market rate as they promised. Let the people who pay extra for the service plans cover those costs.
3. The manager assures me that there is no market rate. But I explained to him that all his competitors are MUCH less expensive in their rates. And, Petro used the term market rate when asking me to sign up for their service. They stating I would pay the market rate unless it exceeded my ceiling price.
4. He refuses to release me from his contract unless I am willing to pay a $399.00 fee.
This is not a company anyone would want to deal with. Their sole objective seems to be "how much they can take from their customers". Are they oblivious to how much more they would make by keeping customers for the long term by treating them fairly and with reason.
I can assure you that I will inform everybody I know of Petro's working business plan. Trust me, you are losing more than just my future business as a result of your business strategy.
Original Review: I have a price ceiling protection in my contract with Petro. I am supposed to pay the market price unless the market price goes over the ceiling price. This all sounds good until I started doing some shopping around. I am not being charged the market price but rather they are charging me at my ceiling price regardless of the market. I called around a couple occasions and have found that I am being charged .70 cents to $1.00 per gallon above everyone else. They have been overcharging me by more than $100.00 each time they fill my tank. Below are my results after calling around to other companies for the days rates: Petro billed me at $3.49. Hocom rate is $2.479. Quinoco rate is: $2.79. Elite Energy rate is: $2.62. Strileckis rate is: $2.49.
I want out of my contract immediately and I would suggest anyone think twice before entering a contract with Petro. When you call for a rate they will not give it to you until they are able to look up your address so they can be sure not to accidentally give you the real market price should you already be on their hook.... Disappointed but better educated.

Even quoting over the market cap rate of $3.60 per gallon when in fact two competitors quotes came in at $2.9. For anyone who is a first time oil buyer. Now they are charging me $80.00 for the estimate. I have no issue paying for the estimate if it was fair and reasonable. The estimate was not fair and reasonable and they thought they could take advantage of a dumb homeowner.

After 20 years of uninterrupted service to my seasonal home, Petro mismanaged its core function, the management of K-factor/degree day model, and switched my account from "as needed" to annual, despite multiple deliveries per year over history of account. My new once a year, high risk status, unbeknownst to me, ran out during a storm and house froze. Petro takes position I wasn't there to complain, and so, legally, the fault is mine! $15,000 worth! I'm contesting that - but do you see an ethical aspect to Petro's callous behavior? A corporate mishap pushed onto me, causing me considerable cost and aggravation. Petro is losing customers at an increasing rate each year, but not quick enough if you, or a neighbor, is considering doing business with this community predator! Perform a community service, and pass on this true, cruel story of arrogant, senior abuse at the hands of Petro Home Services.

Signed with Petro in December of last year, and their first delivery which was Jan 3rd was a nightmare. 3 days after they came to fill up our oil we had a oil spill at the time I was 2 months pregnant and the smell of oil made me very sick. Once notified they came here within 2 hours of the call and told us it was over filled and plugged up a broke hole in the valve. Everything was fine after that until the second problem we had. Second issue in April. We had no hot water due to a broken valve which was still has not been fixed. Third issue was we replaced a thermostat due to damage of the old one by a flood on the house Called Petro. They sent a technician and the guy was not helpful. He said they would send a specialist who never came. Luckily I have my brother a contractor who fixed it. Fourth issue which was recently, I was in the house and smelled something burning. Now 9 months pregnant. My husband said it outside and I said, "no something is wrong."
I went to take a shower and my husband ran up the stair and said, "hurry up the there is smoke under the boiler," and the smell of burning oil got stronger. A technician came about 3 hours later and said there was no oil in the tank and that is what caused this to happen. This is now August the technician then told us that they forgot to do a delivery. Forgot to do a delivery between April and August. Like seriously we have tenants with a child and myself expecting. This is not okay. The technician they made a call to have an oil delivery scheduled for the following morning, which never happened. No one ever came. The following day I had come home and was using the sink in the kitchen and again no hot water.
I myself called Petro and complained again and told her I was 9 months pregnant, we have a tenant with a 4 y.o child and that this was not okay. The lady on the phone then told me there was a scheduled delivery for the day prior in which no one showed up. The response time was about 3 hours after I made the call and the delivery ended up being 210 gallons of oil. Normally they deliver 130. My husband called Petro to speak to a supervisor and of course they never called back avoiding the issue. So now we have a $608 oil bill because they FORGOT to do a delivery. I am beside myself with this and I do not think we should be charged because they FORGOT and put me in a health hazard situation by breathing in fumes. If they think they can treat people like this then they shouldn't be in business. My baby is due any day and this happened a few days ago.

After replacing a electrical part my boiler fired right up. The serviceman waited to make sure it ran thru a cycle before completing the job. I have been very happy with this company. First of all they have an "Early Termination Fee"... which is really an extortionist means of intimidation. They experience no losses, material or otherwise. This is a means by which they feel that they can keep the normally timid masses under their heel. They tout themselves as a "full service company". That they are. They service your wallet and not much else to the benefit of the customers... except charging them $0.40 more per gallon than any other of the local firms. They did "pack" my tank at the end of the heating season. Knowing that my money has been "tanked" by the driver that refuses to obey a sign not to fill more than 50 gallons. Serviced again.
They threaten to charge me their infamous "Early termination Fee". Whoopee. This "full service" company then informed me that they were going to cancel my furnace service contract, which was paid in full, and appointment made. I wonder if the word fraud or receiving moneys through deception rings a bell with them. They don't realize that all contracts are separate and several. So much for their unilateral cancellation attempts. So far, I have bills that are with and without the ETF. Retired with time and money.

I bought a house in Ct and had oil heat for the first time. I used Petro because they were the most recognizable name. I was under contract for the first season but did not renew. Since I had now been living in the area for over a year I decided to explore some of the local oil service providers. Well before the next winter Petro made a delivery to me (despite not renewing my contract) and charged a price that was just about double everyone else. When I called them they offered discounts based on renewing my contract and staying with them another year. If I did not renew the excessive rate they charged would not be negotiated. I signed with someone else for significantly less and personal courteous service. At a time when heating costs are a significant part of everyone's overall expenses and when every dollar counts, it is disappointing that a company would use such tactics to retain business and intimidate customers.

I have been a customer for a few years now. If you are looking for a Company with helpful nice technicians to meet your heating and cooling needs Petro has them. BUT! attached to them is the most incompetent, inadequate, subpar and the most archaic systems for billing and delivery around. You want all this baggage, so you must love frustration, then Petro is definitely for you! If I could I would give them zero stars. This company cares a lot about making money and not about their customers!
For two years in a row Petro decided to stop taking auto-deductions from my account due to a computer "glitch" and caused me to have a large outstanding balance at the end of their calendar year. Last year they reduced my auto deductions due to an "anomaly in their system" and even though I sent a strongly worded email never to do this again. Petro went back to the normal withdrawal but reverted to withdrawing less money once again. All these mistakes led to another outstanding balance.
This winter Petro decided not to give me my normal oil drop around mid February, and my tank went dry yesterday. My last drop was December 7th and I wasn't scheduled until April 23rd. So when I called to ask why they canceled my drop in February I was told the computer showed I still had 125 gallons left in my tank. My reply was "I don't have volumetric smart sensor on my tank. So why is this stated on your system?" I got silence on the phone. They could not drop off oil off yesterday because they were busy and the rep I talked to could care less about my plight. When the tech came he could only give me less than 10 gallons bc that was all he had in the truck, so I went out and bought 11 gallons more to last me through the this morning.
The other 2 major oil companies in my area are either the same or worse than Petro according to other friends and neighbors who use these companies. You will be dancing with the Devil if you sign with Petro, and you will eventually get burned. If you sign with Petro be prepared to write down names, times and reasons why you call their 800 number seeking help! All the best in search for a competent company. If you find one please let me know!

I've done this and Petro will not honor this.

Updated on 03/06/2020: Description of Complaint: Over a year ago, not sure of dates, Petro blew out my gas line after I ran out because they delayed a delivery for propane for over a week and it blew my gas valve. They could not fix it because they couldn't, so I had someone else do it and also changed my pilot on fireplace. Petro came and turned off my gas after noticing it wasn't fixed correctly, but also locked it and left me no access to gas to have it repaired. So they wanted me to pay someone to fix it, pay petro to come back and turn on gas, and then if still broke pay someone to come back and fix it again with no gas because they locked it with connector attached and left me with no access.
I agreed with petro to have my tank picked up after numerous failed attempts to have it fixed with no gas. I was expecting to be reimbursed for my over 70% full gas but was instead sent a bill for over 200 dollars for special parts/ repair 199 tax 17.16 tank pick-up blank. This is ridiculous. They held the tank hostage and then charged me for giving it back. How could I fix my fireplace with no way to connect it to another tank? Where is my reimbursement for the gas? I once again feel ripped off and taken advantage of from this company. They put me in an impossible situation and want to charge me money for it.
Original Review: Always trying to get money out of me. Everytime. This last instance is for my fireplace. Petro never delivered even though I had a contract with them. It took 2 weeks and my propane tank ran dry. When he did show he filled it and blew out my lines which with the amount of pressure he used blew out my pilot and my valve. He could not fix it so I had a company come in that could. The company suggested a new regulator was needed on the propane tank that BELONGS to Petro. I called and was told there would be no charge because it was THEIR regulator. 2 weeks later I get a bill for 119.49 for a diagnostic fee. These people are thieves.

I had Lewis Energy who was taken over by the mob Petro. I was on automatic delivery and didn’t receive oil. It was a glitch in the system. Petro didn’t want to pay for drivers and overworked the ones that they had. When Petro took over a bunch of companies like Lewis, they doubled their service contracts. I was paying 175 for a service contract and when Petro took over they charged me another $188.00 because their service contract is almost 400 dollars. Petro took these customers on and slipped these charges in without most people knowing. Petro delivers their oil always at the ceiling price, if oil goes down they still rip you off by charging you the ceiling price which is higher than any other company out there. If you still have these thief’s in place call them after every delivery and tell them to charge you a lower price.
Also when you cancel the contract an oil truck filled to the top will race to your house so they can fill your tank. When your contract is up tell them not to deliver anymore oil, they will attempt to deliver oil the day before your contract expires. They place you on hold for hours on end and transfer you all over the place. I always ask for a supervisor and demand that they lower the price for passed deliveries. Get rid of them and run them out of business, they treat people like stupid sheep and take advantage of the middle class. Watch the late fees as well, they had numerous late fees on my account and they stated that their computer automatically bills you if you’re not paid up in full every month, they are the ones who advise you on what to pay monthly based on your usage. This makes absolutely zero sense.
If your usage is 300 a month that’s 3600 dollars a year so why would you be getting fees that you the customer have to monitor and then have them removed. I was also told that if my account went over budget by 500 dollars that they would automatically alert me, guess what they never did and I had a huge balance to pay. Get rid of them immediately and hire a small company who needs the business.

I am on a 2 year contract. I chose the ceiling option where i locked in at 3.89 per gallon. The reason I did this was that if the market rate is lower than the 3.89 per gallon I should be paying that price. I've had 5 deliveries this winter and the lowest I paid was 3.88 per gallon. I checked the NYS average oil price which was 2.69 per gallon. I called the Hudson Valley office and was told that even though the market price is lower I have to pay for the service of locking in at 3.89 per gallon. If I wanted to terminate my contract they will charge me $700.00. I have never been treated so poorly and been lied to. I was sold on the ceiling price to take advantage of the benefit of the market price. The first year I was with them they honored that. Then I signed the two year agreement and they refuse to charge me the lower price. What an unethical way to run a company. I'm very disappointed.

I was a Petro customer for 15 years, mostly because my wife managed the utility bills and liked having auto-delivery and peace of mind of a service contract. We recently divorced and I did a review of our Petro account. I looked at gallons delivered, average price and compared against historical pricing data. In 2018 ALONE Petro was over $600 more than Cash on Delivery pricing and about $400 more than another local company my neighbor uses. At many times Petro is selling heating oil at MORE than what it would cost to buy automotive diesel, which is a cleaner higher grade fuel and has NJ and Fed taxes!
Their service contract is for $560 a year. For that you get 24/7 service, but the reality is, if you schedule your tune-up, they come out, change a filter and maybe a nozzle, brush the dust off the intake vent and check combustion. Important things for sure, but that is a couple of hundred dollar service call, not nearly $600. I canceled my service and had a credit with them for nearly $500 because I was expecting one more delivery of oil before I did my research. It's taken 3 phone calls and two weeks and they still can't tell me when they will issue a check. Yet their customer retention people have called me several times trying to get me back. I'm on track to save over $1000 in heating costs for 2019 by DITCHING Petro!

Failed to fill tank, furnace quit working - I’ve been with Petro oil for 20 years. Twice a year they call me to let me know they’re coming to fill my tank. They called to set an appointment Thursday morning for Friday. When I got home Thursday night I had no heat. Long story short the tank was empty and as a result my furnace failed. The technician was at my house at midnight and told me the circuit board was fried but It was just a coincidence that they happened at the same time (Common sense dictates there was a domino effect. When my furnace couldn’t get oil it overheated and fried the board Which in turn trip the circuit breaker OK. It is a possibility that the fail system which should’ve prevented this didn’t work. However If my tank was not allowed to run out this would not have been an issue).
I was told Thursday night and Friday morning that Petro would cover it because they made a mistake. 24 hours later my house is 55°. When the technician arrived Friday night I told him who I had spoken to and that they said to send the charge to that department. The technician said that person was not authorized to tell me that and unless I agreed to pay 500 dollars for A new circuit board he was leaving. He said I wasn’t being charged for a service call just for the cost of the board. (I’ve since looked the board of online. It’s $120 board from a local warehouse.) I was very upset and called Petro while the technician went outside. Petro couldn’t get a supervisor to talk to me. The technician came back in and I was still on the phone. I told him I was waiting to talk to a supervisor. He said if it didnt come directly from (name) he wasn’t doing the work. I felt I had no choice but to agree to it. The technician was here two hours.
He replaced the circuit board and tried to start the system back up but it repeatedly failed. In the process of working on my system he tripped my circuit breaker five times before he decided it was another issue with a safety switch that shuts power when you remove the panel to the blower section (I had checked that while on the phone with Petro Thursday evening and it was working). Regardless, he didn’t have the switch in his truck and he didn’t know when they could order it or when they would be back.
He also said because he was tripping my circuit breaker that he may have fried the second board. I asked him did I have to pay for another board and he said no just the first one. He wanted me to sign his service call and I said I would sign when they fixed my furnace. I called Petro 30 minutes after he left and spoke to a gentleman. He told me two things. One the technician had called in and had left a note that he was never to be sent to my house again and that a Petro supervisor would call me Saturday morning. It is now Sunday And I am still without heat. Petro has not called to speak with me or give me any time frame for the repair of my furnace.

Horrible service! I was told that as part of the contract they will come and do cleaning and replace a filter for the furnace! The guy came in, turned my heater off and said I will not start it back up since it's old and not working properly. There was no issue with the furnace before. They refuse to start it back up and threatened me that they will stop oil deliveries if I or a contractor that is not employed by PETRO will start it up or inspect it or if needed fix it. It's 18 degrees outside and I have elderly parents living here.
I called them to inform them that their actions can cause my pipes to free up and can cause serious health issues. They said, "It's not a problem. We can come install a new system for 12,000 dollars.” To make matters worse I can't cancel and go with someone else since they charge crazy high fees for early termination. This could be classified as extortion. Weeks later I'm living with space heaters trying to not freeze or get sick. Today is 3/7/19 and it's 18 degrees outside.

After that, the nightmare happened, I keep getting the bill even plus late fee for the service I never used or signed for. It has been 2 months. Every time when I talked to the Petro service staff or the sales guy they all said they will take care of it. However, I am keeping getting the bill. I bought into the door to door salesman who left me the bill of goods on my door. Here's what happened after I signed up: Four days of scheduled deliveries came and went, to the point where I was going to run and and kept calling to plead with them that I was running out. I literally got down to the last ten gallons of that before they arrived. Their response each day? "You're scheduled for delivery today."
Received the bill, not in my name of course, only spelled out my name when signing up and the person on the other line read it back to me. All looked good but spelled completely wrong on the bill. Thought that was the reason I wasn't able to log in online, but no. Just reached out to see how to pay them, and the response? "Our website's been a mess for a while". A month later and still not fixed!! However they did say just call in and pay over the phone without a penalty. Ok called to make a payment. Get customer service who couldn't help, but assured me they would pass me along to billing and they would call me right back. A week later I just said screw it and threw the check in the mail.
Looked at my tank the two days ago and it is not even a fraction below a half a tank, in fact the line is touching. So I get a delivery the very next day saying they delivered 150 gallons... WHAT! It didn't even fill the tank and I only have a 230/240 gal tank. Called to figure out how this is possible. Again customer service who told me it was because it was cold outside... Yes that is correct, it was cold outside so magically my tank could take more oil than it holds apparently and not be full at the same time. So once again the person said that a manager would call to handle this. Yeah not holding my breath. They obviously didn't call back today and I won't hear from them. Buyer seriously beware. Document everything! Two months in and I'm already being put in a position to run this up the legal flagpole to see what can be done.

I have been a long time customer of Petro, and have renewed my service contract with them yearly. Even though the price keep increasing and increasing. For my protection I choose the Ceiling price option and locked my rate at $3.779. According to the agreement if the Market price is Low I will always be charge the Market price but if the market price is higher I won’t pay more than my Locked "ceiling price" which as per NYSERDA has been in the 3.20s per gallon range. But Petro have been charging me the ceiling price of 3.779 for every single delivery from November to February 19, 2018. For a 225 gallon tank, that is a huge price hike. Where is the justification for this?
I have called customer service and spend hours talking and explaining my problem and all they said, "It’s you agreed to that price, there is nothing we can do about it. Te price in the NYSERDA is just an average. You shouldn’t be looking at it." Is this a Joke? I have requested to talk to a Manager but a month ago when I called the first time they said that they will have a manager call me back. It’s been 2 months and still waiting for a call. I called again today and spend another 45 minutes with another customer service rep and got nowhere, no answers, no help. I explained to her that my neighbors got deliveries and a very low price per gallon than me and she said she assumes it’s a new customer who got a promotional rate. Are you serious. You offer promotional rates to NEW CUSTOMERS. What about the current 10+ years customers, it’s customers your #1 Priority???
So far I spend $3500 in heating oil and winter is not over yet. Over the years that I have been your customer I spend thousands of dollars in your company and only the “new customers” gets a good deal, no fair. I won’t be renewing my contract with your company, and will Never recommend your company to anyone or will inform that only the first year they will get a good deal. Basically that is what Petro does. Offers a great deal to gain new customers but don't care about their existing customers, which by away should be the other way around. You should take care of your existing customers first, and please train your customer service staff how to treat customers. I don't even want to go there.

First, their pricing models are deceptive and their reps clearly use scare tactics to try and get you into a more profitable plan. When we originally signed up over a year ago, oil prices were declining and were forecasted to remain low. However, their rep kept ensuring us "prices are going up, they're going to get worse, this plan is better." Right... When we didn't want an oil delivery for one month due to low use and that we were going to be away, they hit us with an early termination fee of $399. Their contracts auto renew, but unfortunately I'm not sure where it says that in there, since I was never provided with a copy of the contract and they don't have them available in the online portal. So the only way to stop oil delivery temporarily is to pay them? And the only way to cancel their contract is to pay them? Save yourself the time, money, and aggravation, switch to gas.

Was told when I signed my year contract and from what I gathered from Petro.com that The Petro ceiling plan would adjust if prices went lower. Petro did not and was about a $1 more than local competitors at the time of my delivery. I contacted them multiple times by email about this, due to my work schedule, and the fact that I have emailed them in the past and had good experience that way, but this time I keep getting "Someone in billing will get back to you". Highly disappointed with the way they handled this, coming from the previous owner of my house never had an issue with the time they used them.

They keep putting oil every month or whenever they come around to take care of other people's business. In November they put 1900 worth oil. After two months had another delivery 1456 dollars. Today again 934$ supply. When I called today the lady told me to call back tomorrow and, speak with an account specialist. What is she doing there if she can't help? I think they are fraud, I am going to end my service on March 31. If I do IT before there is an early termination fee. Don't get in their trap. Search before you buy.

If I can choose 0 stars, that would be my rating. Petro service is horrible. They don't know how to handle an emergency. I was without heat and hot water during the most coldest days in winter. We requested for 5-8pm window, instead the technician came to see us at 1pm and we were not able to come home to meet him. Let me tell you about the technician visits, we have requested for half an hour notice, so we can get back home, but if we run late, the technicians harass you that if you don't get there, they will leave. Since we are so frustrated or desperate for their service, we plead with them or rush to get home... Dire circumstance.
When we called back, we expected them to apologize for sending service at the wrong time and expect them to send the technician immediately as it is an emergency, but were told the technician was only able to come in the midnight. It was impossible for us to stay up so late, due to working/school days the following day.
When they offered us the usual wide window, 8 am to 12pm, we took it hoping they will send the technician to us first thing, since they will understand the emergency. The following day, I called the customer service at 8am, was told we were the first people the technician would visit, so we waited patiently in the cold. I didn't hear from anyone until 10am, so I kept calling them every few minutes from then on and every person that received the call, explain the situation that I am waiting since yday and have no heat or hot water the whole day, so I am hoping to see a technician immediately. I would be told we are the next people. And so the calls continued until 3pm (3 hours over the window). I was told there was another major emergency and technician should not be expected until 4pm.
That was the final straw, I was super upset!! What is the definition of an emergency?!! I was so upset on the phone that even customer service recommended I speak with the field supervisor. I am still waiting for that call. Guess they will call me a week after, so that I will be somewhat over this aggravation. I am definitely not continuing with Petro. We have been customers with Petro for 4/5 years. This isn't the first time that this has happened. Horrible service!

I called in January, 2019 for a service call. It was between I think 5 & 6 at night. I was told because of the very cold weather they could not send a serviceman till possibly the next day. I asked them why and response was, "We are busy because of the cold weather and all techs were out." I had no heat and asked why a customer for about 20 years they would not be able to accommodate. They called the service office and said they could come at 3am. I thought that was crazy. They called back and said the tech would be at my house at 12am, 12:30 the phone rang and said the tech had an emergency and would come at 8am. Was mine not an emergency? He came the next day and did what he had to do. I asked him what the wax crystal was coming out of the pipe. He did not know and said I would have to call a plumber. I have a service contract with everything! Why would I have to call a plumber?
He said he would write it down; however I never got a copy of what he did. I had previously called to ask when they were coming to service my unit and they said Possibly March! I told them they always called to schedule the appointment and she said, "Oh we don’t do that anymore, you have to call!" Really? They used to call in August to set up an appointment for September, Never had a problem. The service now is terrible, the people on the phone are rude and hopefully you have heat because they don’t come right away.
I also have the A/C contract. Let’s see what happens with that. This company is not the same as it used to be. A lot of techs retired or they made them retire and now pay them less money I’m sure! Before my contract is up I will be looking for a new company who is also a 24 hour service that really comes! Such a shame it’s gone so downhill because of new management! I read the good reviews and the bad reviews and I have my review and I would lean towards the bad reviews because this has happened more than once in the past few years! The only thing that made this company is the tech I had. He was a very nice person.

This company is a complete scam. I was referred to them by the previous home owner who used them and it has been nothing short of a disaster. I scheduled a delivery with the company and after receiving the delivery, noticed that their cost was much higher than any other local company was charging. After calling numerous times without resolve or answer, I received a call back stating that I signed a contract and that if I wanted to terminate the contract would be 399.00. I asked them where and when I signed this supposed contract, and they couldn't give me an answer either.
I further inquired into pricing and was told it's ceiling pricing and that there was a conflict in Afghanistan and that is why the price has increased. While I was looking at active cost of oil, which was $53.00 a barrel, the representative told me that it was currently 70 dollars. When I asked what exchange he said he got it on an email. The guy was a clueless as rest of workers here. Stay the hell away from these scamming company.

When I checked NASDAQ rates and NYS average heating oil prices both showed the difference between the two dates are less than 1%. When I contacted Petro to find out what index are they using to calculate their pricing, a very unpleasant lady from the pricing department told me it's not of my business and I am lucky she is only charging me the ceiling price. Since we agreed on a fluctuating price, as a customer, I have the right to this information. Needless to say, I will not be renewing my contract.

Original Review: Petro services our home and we are loyal customers for many many years. We renewed our contract in July 2018 and, as in past contracts, agreed to the ceiling price agreement. When price of oil is high, $3.549 would be charged; but when it goes down the lower rate would apply. Never a problem until this past December delivery and even worse now February 6 delivery. Oil prices are definitely down, we see it on television, read about it in the paper and hear it from our neighbors who have oil heat. Petro is PRICE GAUGING and NOT honoring their contract by charging us $3.549, when rates are much lower. We called them in December to dispute our charge but were given the line... "It's the average." Now we get delivery on February 6 and are still being charged the ceiling price of $3.549 when it is down as low as $2.499. Our expectation is that Petro will make an adjustment to our current bill as well as adjust/credit our December payment. We will hold off payment of this current bill until we hear either from Consumer Affairs or Petro.

For some time now, we have been concerned that Perto Oil has been charging us too much for heating oil. We just happen to review the past few bills and noticed that in fact were billed at the cap rate of $3.599, despite the fact that the MA market rate for heating oil delivery varied between $3.10 and $3.16 (see: https://www.mass.gov/service-details/massachusetts-retail-heating-oil-prices).
We understand that we signed an agreement with a cap of $3.599. However, the agreement also provides for a fluctuating range not to exceed the cap. Given that our last three deliveries have all been at top of our range, it is obvious that Petro has not been honest about its agreement of offering oil prices within the range stated in the agreement. We are being price gauged by Petro Oil. We are shopping for a new oil provider.

My wife and I "inherited" Petro when they bought Kasden Fuel, our former oil provider. We went so far as to have them install a brand new furnace and water heater. Not only have the hinted at fuel savings not materialized (our bills have skyrocketed) but we are being price gouged for oil at $3.45/gallon while neighboring providers are offering oil at $2.54/gallon. They tell us that we must buy from them until May when an agreement runs out or we will be subject to a $399 "termination fee". This was not explained at all to us prior to entering into this and since when is a "price ceiling" plan give a Company a license to steal from their customers by charging $1 per gallon over market.
These agreements should be illegal and this company has been inflexible as they continue to price gouge us, claiming their "level of service" justifies the higher price when in fact their service is downright crappy. We are on auto delivery and only once in 2.5 yrs did they actually come without being called. Furthermore, we actually ran out one time requiring an emergency delivery because of their inability to manage auto delivery effectively. Oh and by the way when you call now you are generally on hold for over 5 minutes while their recording tries to sell you nonrelated household services. I shudder to think what would happen in an emergency. Avoid this company and their plans AT ALL COSTS.

I bought a new house and instantly started to receive ads for various oil companies in the area. I got one from Petro that offered a $200 credit and a premier service plan for one year for a new account. The ad also had this handwritten and highlighted at the bottom. I called and spoke to a sales rep who told me that they no longer offer this because the service plan was in place of the $200 but that he could match a price if we found a better one. Once I found a better rate he said that was "unreasonable" and he didn't think that is what it was. So I got an invoice to show the price (as requested) and I told him I had the ad that offered the credit and service plan. He said he would rather match the price and not include the $200 credit. He said he could do the matched price, a $100 credit and the service plan. I agreed.
We got the contract which included a $200 fee for a lower service plan. I asked him and he said he would correct this and the original price. After multiple emails, he said it was a mistake and he was willing to fix the contract. They had a promotion to have the first oil fill 20 cents less per gallon. The sales rep said he would not follow this because he was already matching a better price but he would bring it down 11 cents per gallon. He asked when to have my first delivery as I had over half a tank left. I asked him to wait until Feb. so we could get more with the lower rate. He set the date for Feb 5th.
On January 18th I got my first delivery for the higher rate and it did not include the $100 credit. I called to have this addressed and was passed around from service to sales and back. They told me I would have to speak to the original sales rep. I said I did not trust him after my original experiences and I wanted to speak to someone else. After being told I would get calls back from the man I spoke to that day and a supervisor, they had the original sales rep call and he told me I would have to talk to service to have this addressed. He issued me about a $2.00 credit saying that is the difference if I had waited until 2/5. I again called and said I wanted to speak to a supervisor as I was unhappy with my service so far. I was again told that I would get a call back (around my work schedule), another week went by, no call.
Today, 2/5 I came home and had another delivery even though I was supposed to have it filled only when it was around a quarter of a tank. I was told they would be able to do this because they already knew the house as the previous owners used Petro. When I called I was told that they were learning the house and how much oil I used which is opposite of what I was told would happen. I also let my dog out and realized Petro left my gate open! After a search party, I was able to find my dog. There was no reason for them to leave the fenced in yard open.
I called to address today's matter and was told that the Petro reps were doing their job and that it was the supervisors that were not responding to the calls. They could not give me any information on how to reach a supervisor and said that I would have to wait and see if they called. Today's rep did say she would give me a call in a few days to see if I received a call. I have little hope at this point. Next year I will happily pay more for oil from any company other than Petro. I have never worked with such unprofessional staff and I am highly disappointed.

I previously had Atlas Glen-Mor which became Petro, where I was a loyal customer for years. Petro is massively price gouging their customers under the guise of being a “full service company”. I’ve noticed that I am being charged almost $1 more than avg. oil prices in Eastern Massachusetts! My supposedly “protective” ceiling price plan is anything but. I am being charged the full ceiling price of $3.59 which is costing me at least $100+ more per delivery than if I just bought oil off a local company. It takes several months to get an oil boiler cleaning appointment because they don’t employ enough technicians.
The Petro technician that recently did a boiler cleaning & checkup as part of my overpriced service plan adjusted a pressure control mechanism on my boiler (which is only 2 years old, mind you), which caused my boiler to over-pressurize under load during a recent super cold weather snap, and release many gallons of hot water from a pressure overflow pipe that flooded my basement. Thankfully I had a plumber coming to my house the following day for other non-boiler related work in my kitchen. The plumber, who is highly skilled & knowledgeable in heating systems, said my boiler settings were wrong & the pressure control was too high, which caused the overflow & the flood. The plumber adjusted my boiler to prevent it from happening again.
The ONLY person prior to the plumber who touched my boiler was the Petro serviceman. Yet when I called Petro to seek resolution & credit for incompetent service, the Boston area Service Supervisor, “Tim **” (Note: you will NEVER get anyone’s last name at Petro), he refused to help, acknowledge, investigate or take any responsibility for the situation. I asked to speak to his supervisor (supposedly a General a Manager named “Jim” - again, no last names at Petro!). Tim ** told me he would make sure Jim called me, but of course (as expected), I have not heard from Jim. In the past I’ve had minor boiler part fixes with Atlas Glen Mor, now Petro - & they conveniently NEVER seem to be covered under their self-proclaimed wonderful service contracts they offer. I don’t want to think about how much I’ll be charged & how many parts that won’t be covered under the Petro contract as my boiler ages.
Petro will 100% lose me as a customer when my ceiling plan & useless service contract expire this year. This operation is a conglomerate, don’t be fooled. Find a local oil company & call a skilled plumber (many of whom also offer 24-hour heating system service) if something goes wrong. The price gouging as compared to Regional oil prices is also unacceptable & reason enough to not renew my contract. Unfortunately when I signed in 2018, I wasn’t told that Atlas Glen Mor was really Petro until after I got a contract. They were probably frightened I would find the dozens of other 1-Star reviews from other customers in the Northeast!!

I have the same problem as other reviewers. The price keeps going up, and is well above the going rate locally. I had a delivery yesterday and was charged $3.949 per gallon. This was 60 cents more than my last delivery. Other local companies that I contacted are charging between $2.35 and $2.80. I called to discuss with customer service and they are standing by their pricing, so I cancelled my account and will find a more reasonably priced company. I’m not necessarily looking for the cheapest prices, but $1-1.50 more than the going rate is ridiculous.

When I called back at 4 pm they told me I was 3 calls out meaning I should see a tech by 5:30. When I called back at 8 pm they told me I was next in line, when I called at 10 pm they told me I was 3 calls out. This runaround went on until a technician turned up at 2 am only to find the situation had been left too long to remedy. It is now the next day and we have to pay a plumber $500 to thaw our frozen house and Petro another $400 for some parts and labor. We pay for Petro's highest level of service and this is what we got. My house is frozen and my pockets are empty. I am very upset.

I have been a Petro auto delivery customer for over 15 years. They have on record that they are to inform me when I receive a delivery as for some reason, if the tank is too low, the burner will cut off. Yesterday, the coldest day of the year in New York 5 degrees with wind chills in the -teens, they delivered oil and my burner immediately cut off. I called them at 10:00 A.M. to ask for service and they informed me someone would be at the house between the hours of 5:00 P.M.-8:00 P.M. I explained I have a 94 year old mother in frail health. They said they would do their best. At 7:00 P.M. the tech showed up, worked awhile and flew out of the house like it was on fire saying it was fine - never checking to be sure the heat was on. Ten minutes later when the baseboards were still cold I called Petro and was told they would send another tech between the hours of midnight and 3:00 A.M.
I stayed up to wait for them and called them at 2:15 A.M. to find out when the tech would be here. They said they had no record for the return at midnight but instead it was 12:00 P.M.-3:00 P.M. the next day. My husband and I were both on the phone and heard the midnight service call. My call at 2:15 A.M. resulted in being told they had a large number of calls and were doing the best they could. After begging and pleading, I was told a tech would be out first thing in the morning between 8:00 A.M.-Noon. As I write this, we will see what happens. Nonetheless, I am sure I will have some frozen pipes and just hope they don't break. Ironically, during the long hold to speak with customer service, Petro advertises their plumbing services! I will speak with a rep to see how to get out of my contract as I feel that Petro breached the contract and once out, will NEVER go back to Petro. I do not recommend using this company at all!

I have been with this company for 4 years. In the beginning they were fine, then they started to charge me nearly two hundred dollars more than market price on 1/20/19 yesterday. They delivery oil at $3.70. Other company price is around $2.40-$2.50. My contract expired last year in August. Never send any email or letter that they will renew or adjust price. They made a delivery in Nov. I don't know what was oil price. Totally forgot about it. Now I feel so bad. At least they have to send email or mail that they will change the oil price. $3.70 vs. $2.40 per gallon??? I don't understand. Don't use this company.

I am a long time customer of Petro. I received an oil delivery on 1/16/19. On the same day my sister received a delivery. The difference in the price we paid was 53 cents a gallon, which is a big difference. We both have a ceiling price cap (not a fixed prices). When I received deliveries in the past and called and complained about the price, as it was much higher than the market price. I was told the oil that was being delivered was bought at the higher price. Well how could two deliveries on the same day have such a difference in price?
I called 1/21/19 and spoke a young woman in the pricing department. She pretty much told me that they don’t hide that they are the highest priced oil. I asked to speak to a supervisor and was on hold for some time. She finally comes back on the phone requesting my sister's information, as her supervisor wants it. I told her I would give it to the supervisor. What happened to customer service. I have become very dissatisfied with Petro. Use to pride on customer service.

Billing from Petro has always been confusing, then they introduced this PayGo scam. They store their oil and gas at your house, but you don't pay for it until you use... and when you use it you pay the price it would have been when they delivered it... invariably that is much higher than the current price. They put my entire account oil and gas on this 'plan' when I only consented to oil. Now it is an awful hassle to untangle my houses from their services. I wouldn't recommend Petro to a friend. They have fine marketing but you'll pay for every bit of it through their padded fees for fuel and service.

Updated on 01/23/2019: When I called back and demanded to speak to someone who could address the problem, I was told that the price was correct. When I told them that oil prices have dropped and I should be paying a lot less they told me that their price is still high and they set the price not the market. (Not what my contract says.) They also said their oil is better than everyone else's and that's why they charge more. So I posted a complaint on this site. To my surprise Petro responded and asked if I could provide a phone # so they could contact me to resolve the issue. It's been 4 days and guess what. No call from Petro. I guess they are too busy overcharging for their superior oil, and cheating people out of their money. Stay away from Petro!!! I have never dealt with a more dishonest company!!
Original Review: I have a contract with Petro oil. (They used to be Mannor oil, a good company, but were bought out by Petro.) My contract has a ceiling price at $3.82 per gallon. I was told that is the highest I will pay and if oil prices go lower I would pay the current lower market price. Since I signed my contract in late Oct, oil prices have dropped a lot. The current price for a gallon of oil is $2.10 a gallon. I don't expect to pay that little but I do expect a significant drop in the price. I called Petro to dispute the cost per gallon and the Rep told me there is nothing she could do, but a lot of people are calling and complaining! She told me someone from billing would call me back. Not to my surprise I got no callback. I guess they are very busy trying to come up with a story to justify their thievery. I will try to call 1 more time then is directly to the Better Business Bureau and to the PSC. Stay Away from Petro!!!

Dear “The company formerly known as General Utilities”. I have been a long time customer of General Utilities, and have renewed my service contract with them yearly. This year, I signed up for the variable rate pricing which means I pay the current market rate which as per NYSERDA was 3.299 per gallon. To my horror I get a bill from Petro for 3.709 per gallon. For a 225 gallon tank, that is a huge price hike. Where is the justification for this? I am not stupid. I will be contacting you to have this resolved, otherwise this is in breach of contract, and I will find another heating company to do business with. I thought there was a law against monopolies. Why and how can Petro buy out so many heating companies??

I am absolutely shocked at this disgusting place. My mother and I have been a customer for 20-25 years. We recently stopped our contract a few months because we are moving. We called one night to see if we could have an emergency delivery for 100 gallons because we ran out of heat and we were both very very cold. They said they couldn't do that for us because we were no longer a customer. Absolutely inhumane. They rather see people freeze than help them. I will be making sure to be making more of a stink about this. My mother is disabled and should not have to sleep in the cold. Worst company ever!!

I am beyond pissed. I was very happy with General Utilities but Petro took them over. I called twice to discuss a renewal contract and after the last call, I said I was not okay with the offered price and would not be renewing the contract. I was going to call Roma Oil today to get a COD delivery. I was too busy today to make the call and when I get home and check my mail, there is an invoice from Petro oil. Why would I get a delivery when I have no contract and I told them no on the phone last month! Roma oil has a price of 2.14 per gallon....Petro’s price Is 2.99! Petro customer service has yet to call me.
In the interim, I have begun an analysis of our oil purchases from 2014 to 2018. In my 12/28/18, I did additional research and found historical regional data on the average, low and high oil prices going as far back as 2006 for all of the counties in CT on the DEEP (Department of Energy and Environmental Protection) website. For example, our Petro invoice dated 10/15/18 we were charged $4.599/gallon. For Middlesex County, CT the DEEP data for 10/22/18 states the average price per gallon was $3.217, high price per gallon was $3.369 and the low price per gallon was $3.040.
Using DEEP Middlesex County, CT AVERAGE RETAIL HEATING OIL PRICE, please note NOT the low or high price, on the date closest to each of our invoice date and calculated the price difference and the amount we overpaid. On ALL invoices we paid more than the high price per gallon documented by DEEP for Middlesex County, CT.
For example, Petro invoice date 10/15/18 we were charged $4.599/gal. For the week of 10/15/18, DEEP low price/gal $3.040, average price/gal $3.224, high price/gal $3.369. Our oil delivery on 10/15/18 was for 107.2 gallons. The difference between the price/gal we paid of $4.599 and the average DEEP price/gal of $3.224 is a whopping $1.375/gal. Multiply that by the number of gallons purchased 107.2 we OVERPAID $147.40.
I used this same methodology for all of the invoices I had access to online from 2/17/14 - 10/15/18 we OVERPAID $2,248.1238 FOR OUR HEATING OIL PURCHASED THROUGH PETRO. 511 people so far have read my 12/28/18. Please warn anyone and everyone you know to change heating oil providers if they currently do business with Petro. Stay tuned...
Original Review: We have been Petro customers since purchasing our weekend home in Westbrook, CT in 2002. We have been on the Variable Plan Petro offers for 16 years. I have been able to access invoices online only as far back as 2/17/14. We have not been paying an "attractive rate" as the Variable Plan promises. We have been gouged and paying premium prices the whole time. On the Petro website it states, "The Variable Plan has an attractive rate that fluctuates up and down with market conditions. There are no price protection costs or termination fees associated with this plan."
I did additional research and found historical regional data on the average, low and high oil prices going as far back as 2006 for all of the counties in CT on the DEEP (Department of Energy and Environmental Protection) website. By the way, the only reason I even started doing the research and looking into a new oil provider was because I did not get a call back from Petro. I called inquiring about the feasibility of replacing our compressor with a heat pump to heat our basement so we could switch between using oil and electric to heat the whole house using electric. We have solar panels and produce a good amount of power. As a result of not getting a call back, I called a local full service provider and was told the MAXIMUM PRICE PER GALLON THEY CHARGED OVER THE LAST THREE YEARS WAS $3.29. Needless to say I went ballistic and called Petro. After I explained the reason for my call, I was forwarded to Jennifer. Jennifer told me, as a Variable customer, the reason for the $4.599 price per gallon was because, "The variable pricing fluctuates with Petro costs which includes the cost of fuel AND PETRO COST OF DOING BUSINESS."
On the Petro website it states, "The Variable Plan has an attractive rate that fluctuates up and down with market conditions." The fluctuation implied and described in the plan description clearly has to do with the ups and down with the oil market condition NOT Petro's overhead. There is no mention of Petro costs of doing business getting passed onto Variable Plan customers.
After going back and forth with Jennifer and my suggesting it would have been good customer service and just plain nice if I had received a call from Petro and/or when I called to schedule our annual preventive maintenance on our A/C unit and/or furnace over the last 16 years, that someone would have mentioned it might be beneficial and save us money if we considered switching to one of the "Protected Pricing Plans" that Petro offers. As Jennifer kept attempting to convince me Petro was worth paying exorbitant $4.599/gallon price because Petro offers 1) better service (clearly not the case as I did not get a call back), 2) Petro is the largest provider of home heating oil in the US.
Anyway, Jennifer forwarded me to a "pricing rep" named Rich. Rich clearly has been doing customer service much longer. Both Jennifer and Rich wanted to save a customer by offering me the "Protected Pricing Plan" where I would lock in something like a $3.00/gallon rate for a year. I asked both Jennifer and Rich to explain to me why I paid $4.599/gallon when you can offer me a price of $3.00/gallon on this other plan and lock it in. Remember, the Variable Plan is supposed to offer an "attractive rate".
Petro is: 1) False advertising 2) Doing a bait and switch and purposely misleading the customer with the language they are using implying that you are going to get a good price by going with the Variable Plan and to "trust" them 3) Intentionally not disclosing that they are tacking on their business costs in addition to the cost of oil onto the Variable customers because they think they can get away with it. I do plan to take this further as I can see from the numerous one star reviews I am not the only customer being misled by Petro's advertising and salespeople selling their services.

I have been a Petro customer since 2014 with automatic heating oil delivery to one of our properties. Each year the price increases and the price went through the roof in early 2018 and again in November 2018. I am on their Variable rate plan which per their website is described as "fluctuates with market conditions." As of today, the market price per Petro is $2.59, however MY variable rate price is $3.79 and my bill from November was over $4.00/gallon. Below is a story to help better clarify how this works. Needless to say my business is going elsewhere and I may move to take further action to ensure this does not happen to others.
Hypothetically, let’s say you had to sign up on a pricing plan with your local gas station to purchase your gas from any of their locations. There are three plans: -Variable - means you pay whatever the market price per gallon is and are subject to any fluctuation in that price. -Ceiling - for one year, your price per gallon will fluctuate but will not exceed the agreed upon price in your contract. -Fixed - for one year, you will pay the same price per gallon.
Customer John ** signs up for a Variable Rate plan with the gas station in 2014 and has purchased his gas there ever since. Based on the explanation above for his Variable plan, John will pay whatever the market price dictates; meaning he will pay whatever price is on the big light up sign each time he pulls in. In 2018, John pulls in and the sign says $2.50 per gallon, but when John goes to the pump and swipes his loyalty card the price changes to $4.00 per gallon. At the same moment John is paying $4.00 for his Variable plan, Jane Doe signs up for her Variable plan and she pays $2.50 per gallon. When John questions his inflated price, the gas station tells him it is because he has a variable rate plan that started in 2014. John is mad. Why would loyalty to a company be treated this way? Fix it Petro.

Been with Petro many years. Each year, the customer service I receive is worse and worse. My last oil delivery was in February of 2018 - during terrible snowstorm. I was charged premium price for the delivery - SHOCKED to see a bill of approximately $1400 - the biggest one I have ever received. And I have gotten some big bills. Although I am on contract, that delivery was a big gouge. I called them for almost a year, to try to get some relief on the bill. Why did they wait for middle of snowstorm to deliver 320 gallons at top dollar, when I am on a fluctuating price plan? They always seem to deliver at the top end of the plan.
Also had a service plan with them. What a joke! Have to chase them around over and over again to get them to come and service my heating system: just to make an appointment! So paying over 300.00 a year, for basically NO CUSTOMER SERVICE. If I didn't call them and chase them around, to make the appt., they would take my money and just ignore me. So I have had enough. Would never recommend Petro to anybody.

I am a new customer to Petro. As of September 2018, I was convinced to switch from Slomin's based on a low oil price, free service contract and the previous homeowners used Petro for years. I figured why not give them a chance based on prior history at my home, worst decision ever made. We set up for our "tank inspection" which involved no inspection at all other than making sure we had an oil tank and setting me up with their Gremlin Wi-Fi tank monitor (which I needed to set up day off because their rep did not know how, and I've had to reset it 3x in the last 2 months since it's dropped off network).
Now December rolls around and the cold weather is here to stay, I notice my tank is starting to get low on oil so I call customer service on 12/3 to find out when my first delivery would be and was told either 12/6 or 12/7. No delivery shows and now I'm below 1/4 of a tank, so I call customer service on 12/8 and was told whoever told me those days previously was wrong and it was never set for that. This representative told me my delivery was set for some time in the following week. This was unacceptable to me as temps for the next 3 days were going to be in the 20s overnight and 30s during the day and I know if I wait for a delivery to randomly show up I will run out of oil. The woman said she can request an early day in the week but can't guarantee I'll get oil on a specific day.
Again this was unacceptable to me that a large scale company would not care if their customer ran dry on oil, had no heat, and causes their utilities to fail and further inconvenience them with repairs or at worst needing a replacement furnace. Unfortunately at this point there was nothing more I could do that would change the situation other than wait, so I called back after 9 am as I was advised the routing department opens at that time and could better assist me with getting a specific delivery day. The gentleman I spoke with said my delivery was set up for tomorrow 12/10. I asked if this was a request or it was already routed, to which his response was "it printed for a driver for tomorrow." I asked how I can be guaranteed this is the case since I was already told someone could not guarantee, he advised he guarantees it will be delivered and noted this to my account.
3 pm on 12/10 rolls around and still no oil delivery so I call back and a rep confirms I am still on the route for today and deliveries can be up until 8 pm. 8 pm rolls around and still no delivery so I call back again and this rep advises me they see the notes that I was told delivery would be today but they did not follow up with the right department to have the ticket given to a driver for today. At this point I've now been lied to more times than I can remember by numerous reps. I now requested my delivery be one of the first on the routes for 12/11 as I know I'm now below 1/8 tank and if it goes any long I will be out of oil. I was told an email will be sent to a delivery manager and they normally respond promptly even after hours. I requested a callback from this representative whether or not she got a response from him and she said her shift is til 10:30 pm and I advised she can call at any time.
She advised I would hear back from her before end of her shift... No callback and now it's 11 pm. I realize my furnace has not kicked on in a few hours and the thermostat in my house is reading 61 degrees. Meanwhile it's set at 69. I go to check the burner and sure enough it is now not firing on and now I have no heat and it's 29 degrees outside. Now I need to call back to Petro's emergency number and set up an emergency visit to now have my burner repaired since that system has now failed. I requested a visit the next day as it's now midnight and I leave for work at 5 am. They set me up for 3-5 pm on 12/11.
It's now 12/11 and I still have never received a callback from anyone in regards to making sure my oil is delivered or the request was even acknowledged. My oil delivery actually shows up, but still no callback or indication that any request was ever submitted to any manager or supervisor. It's now 2 pm and I call back in regards to my "promised" callbacks from numerous people to which all I get offered is an email request for them to call me back (again). I've now lost track of how many requests have been made for callbacks and get nothing but the runaround & this person blaming the last person for not doing their job correctly. 4:15 pm rolls around and dispatch calls advising me the serviceman "might" be late as he's heading to a job now and I'm next on his route. I already know at this point he's going to be late, so 5:30 rolls around and still no call or update to his arrival so I call back to customer service.
The woman I speak with confirms I'm still set for today but tried to contact dispatch twice and no one is answering so she offers me a callback in 5 minutes and her supervisor will walk over and find out from them directly. Hesitant about this based on my prior promises I have no choice because I have no other option, she actually calls me back but informs me of nothing new "He's finishing up his current job and then you're next." He shows up at 6:15 pm with no call ahead or notice he's on his way. He was able to make the necessary repairs in a timely fashion and restore heat, but left without actually explaining what was done other than saying he replaced the transformer.
It's now 12/12 9:30 am and I still have not received 1 callback from any of the supervisors/managers I was told would call me back over the last 3-5 days. I advised the last representative I spoke with that I would be filing numerous complaint with all outlets and escalating this as far as it needs to go in order for this to be corrected. I've requested some form of compensation for loss of time and the cost of electricity as I was running electric space heaters for over 24 hours just to keep the house at a normal temperature for my family and pets and to avoid any further damage as freezing temps were present.

I have been a customer for more than 10 plus years as of today. The last few years have been awful. Cannot easily make an appointment for annual service, need to call in excess of 90 days in advance of service contract beginning. I like the payment options and having a service agreement. The price lock has been a winner some years and a loser others. I am on automatic delivery. Ran out overnight. Placed service call at 7:30 am. My appointment was supposed to be between 1pm & 4pm. Was next in line for service technician at 1:30pm. Service called at 4:30pm tech was still half hour away. Delivery occurred at 6:40 pm. Company has gotten too big to service its customers adequately.

Heating oil is in the range of $2.30/gallon for a 200 gallon delivery. This is outrageous. I will never recommend or do business with Petro again.

I’ve owned my summer house in Long Island for 18 years, and I have had the same oil company up until one year ago when my neighbor told me Petro would give me the lowest oil price. So I decided to sign a Contract with them and without a doubt it was one of the biggest mistakes I’ve made in my life! I encountered my first problem with them with my first service call. To start with, whenever you call you will be on hold for at least 30 minutes plus... I called them this past Thursday to report that my hot water heater was not working and had no hot water, after lie after lie and it was not fixed until the following Sunday.
When I signed the contract there was a promise that they would always be there the same day. No shows and more lies! Spent hours on phone on hold. Mind you, the weather that weekend was in the ’50s and they told me they were overwhelmed. I couldn’t imagine what would happened when it’s the dead of winter and your heat is out waiting for them with your water pipes freezing! As you can see in previous reviews this company is falling apart! It’s a shame to see a long established company failing.

Can someone explain to me why my "capped price" (which is supposed to follow the market up and down, but not more than the capped price) turns out to be a fixed price? My cap is $2.99 per gallon. Heating oil prices in my area (Baltimore County, MD) average $2.75 a gallon today. Jason at Petro told me that the price had to drop at least 32c a gallon for me to get a lower price. If this is true, then I was lied to when my sales rep told me that my price would follow the market down, as he didn't mention that it had to go down a LOT for my price to go down. This will be my last year with Petro. I can get a better price going will call with any other company.

My local home heating oil company in Dutchess County, New York was taken over by Petro Oil recently. I am on automatic home heating oil delivery with the caveat that they call me before delivery to turn off my furnace to prevent sludge from clogging the filter while filling up the tank. Petro neglected to call before delivery and filled the tank while the oil heater was on. Petro charged me 4.70 a gallon when the going rate is 2.84 a gallon. I called 8 other local home heating oil companies including Petro and all quoted me the price of 2.84 a gallon if buying 150 gallons or more two days after the above Petro delivery.
There have been at least 7 back and forth phone conversations between me and Petro to get to the bottom of this with no success. Even though Petro's service man who cleaned my furnace after the delivery claimed there must have been a mistake and one person that I spoke to at Petro claimed the same thing their manager refused to budge on the price and insisted I had to pay immediately or they would stop delivering oil. And the several people at Petro threatened me that if I bought oil elsewhere they would stop automatic delivery and cancel my service contract even though I paid 450 dollars for it and it does not expire until September, 2019.
Each person at Petro insists that the price I pay is 'my' price...whatever that means. Each phone conversation usually ended by threats from Petro either to pay up, allow them to deliver oil without calling ahead and telling me the price ahead of time, and to stop confronting them or they would stop my automatic delivery and cancel my service contract without reimbursement. We all have unsavory dealings with home heating oil companies but this is the worst experience by far that I have ever had. Hire Petro Oil at your own risk. Caveat emptor!

In July 2018 we (wife and I) purchased in natural gas furnace through Petro (Brookfield, CT). We replaced a ca. 1956 gas furnace (original installation in 1956 when the house was built). The furnace was installed by two guys who evidently knew what they were doing. Nice. We used the furnace first in late September. Worked fine... when it worked. Every few days it would turn off and only blow ambient temperature air (cold) through the house. The tech guy showed me what to do when this happened; he returned twice (so far) to address the issue. Issue not yet addressed. $5000+ for a new furnace that is NOT reliable - bad investment. I am not pleased. The next time I speak with the friendly Petro rep on the phone I will not be friendly. My patience is gone.

We have been a customer of Burke heat for over 4 years. Recently Petro took over company and ever since this happened we have had nothing but problems. We have 2 properties with them for oil delivery and service. In the past 2 months both properties ran out of oil which never happened with Burke. It was a repetitive delivery. In my rental property 6 times I had a service tech out over a period of 2 days to repair an issue they kept stating was repaired when it was not.
Today again issue with my rental property, service call goes in at 9.30. Service guy goes to property, states issue is fixed. Half hour later same issue and now no one can get there until between 4pm-11pm tomorrow after I stated kids were in property. I called sales and told them to cancel both contracts and oil deliveries. I am now gone to a new company who are meeting me tomorrow morning first thing. I would advise everyone to stay clear of Petro Oil. They are a disgrace to treat customers the way they do. Social media is my next hit and letting everyone know what they are really like. 1 star is even too good for them.

I've been a customer for over 11 years, we always pay our bills on time. I come home yesterday to find out that we have no heat, I have a sick 2 yr old daughter that's not sleeping and now no heat, how could that be. Turns out the tank is bone dry. I don't know how that is possible, since I've never ever had to schedule a delivery, since I'm a contracted customer. I called at 7pm to let them know, and in spite of my relationship as a long time on time paying customer they couldn't even get me some oil last night to last until another delivery. None. I had to call another 24 hour emergency fuel company and pay through the nose to get oil last night. Petro is a disaster. In addition, because the tank was dry even though I had oil added the furnace wouldn't run, so I had to figure out how to bleed the pump and get the air out of the line, which took another hour since I've never done that before.

To start, I have been a Petro customer for many years and have 4 accounts with them. 3 oil and one propane. Their service has become unbearable. As I write this, I have been without heat and hot water for over 36 hours. I recently was convinced that I should change my underground oil tank to an above tank. They tried to charge me $1500 more than a competitor, but matched the price. They used a scare tactic by telling me that I would never be able to sell my home because banks do not lend on homes with underground tanks, and that these tanks start to leak and could cause environmental issues and cost thousands of dollars to fix.
Being that I was a loyal customer, I decided to go with them. Upon transferring the remaining oil to the new tank, I was told that I had 140 gallons still remaining in the old tank so they told me to use it up and then they would switch it over to the new tank. They said based on my usage, I had until end of December before I ran out. I guess they were wrong. I called Friday morning at 730 and was told they could not get someone out for a couple of hours. Since I was going out for the day, I told them to put me in for a service call at 8:00 pm. I received a call at 1:30 asking if they can come over then. Explained to them I was not home.
We returned home at 7:45 pm and waited. I did not expect them to be there at 8:00, However, they had all day to schedule me in for somewhere around that time. At 10:30 pm I placed my next call. Was told that someone would be there shortly and that I was next on the list. At 12:00 am, I called again, and was given the same story. I waited up until 1:45, the temperature at my house was 54 degrees, and decided to go to bed. At 2:00 am I received a call telling me that the tech would not be there until the morning and that I would be first on the list at 8:00 am. I was lied to again as I still wait for the service person to come. It is now 10:40 am.
Stay away from this company at all costs. They have somewhat of a monopoly, but there must be someone else out there that can deliver oil and service. By the way, you can expect to wait on hold for a minimum of 5 to 10 minutes whenever you call there. Another frustration. I will say, that a supervisor finally called me this morning. One would expect someone that would be somewhat understanding and apologetic. The person that called me could not care less, had no explanations or apologies, and the call was a waste of time.

Read the other clients' complaints... They're the same. How dare they?!!! Check your oil bill. Go to Slomin's. They're still a private company and they're reasonable and honest. Almost every other independently owned oil company on LI has been purchased by an investment company. The investment company now owns Petro, Meehan, Romanelli and Manor fuel. Beware. I've been a customer for 20+ years. I've been a payment plan for several years now. I use about $2100 in oil every year consistently, now Petro is raising my payment plan that would give them an additional $600 annually. The increase makes no sense. Also, they are charging an outrageous $566/year for a service plan, never bothering to ask me if I want their highest cost plan. Because of this discrepancy they actually put a hold on my oil deliveries when my supply is low, risking sludge in my lines. At best this is a terrible way to treat a long time customer, but truth be told, it is a sneaky and slimy business tactic. I've called a few competitors who can't believe what Petro is trying to do. I'm sure plenty don't analyze their bills and are just paying outrageous fees for their services. I've also submitted a complaint with BBB.

I have been a customer for 20+ years. Over the years, Petro's service has gotten progressively worse but after this year's experience I am done. I had an oil delivery scheduled for early October which I called to cancel and push back by ~2 weeks. Customer service said no problem - except this message was clearly not relayed to the delivery department. Petro ended up showing up on the day I had cancelled, filled my tank all the way (I only ordered a portion since I never need a full tank), charged me $2000+ despite the original quote being ~$700, and broke my fence gate since I was not on the property to open it (original reason why I cancelled).
I called to complain about the property damage and demand to know why they went against my order and filled the full tank for a much higher gallon fee than originally discussed. The first agent apologized and said it shouldn't matter because now I don't have to fill it up for a while. When I told her that it's not Petro's decision how I spend my money and that there is a huge difference between $700 and $2000, she said there is nothing she can do. When I told her to have the delivery crew come back and remove the extra oil, I was told my tank does not allow for Petro to remove oil (very convenient for them). Of course I went up the ladder of "customer service" agents for a few days. Finally I ended up at the department manager's line who assured me I would only be charged for my original order and they would pay for the damaged property ($100).
Fast forward to a few days ago when I received my new bill. Petro "generously" dropped the total charge to $1500, are still charging for the full oil delivery, and there is no mention of my property damage. At my job, if I make a mistake, I would never dream of charging my client for it - Petro however seems to believe that their mistakes are solely my financial problem. To add one more layer to Petro's super customer service, every year they charge an annual service charge. My system has not been serviced since 2017. When I inquired about the service for this year, I was told they are unavailable until March of 2019. Of course I am still expected to pay for 2018 and 2019 but will only receive 1 service. I am starting my search for legal advice because I refuse to pay $2000 or $1500 for someone's inability to do their job.

So I have been using Petro since I purchased my home about 3 years ago. My locked in price contract ended and the price of oil was high so I decided not to lock in and "float" with the market. Come late spring, I received two separate delivers within two weeks while the prices were high. This upset me as I did not feel like I needed the oil and that they were overcharging me. I ended up paying close to $1000 dollars (sorry I do not recall the exact price).
Since I did not have a "contract" I called to cancel my account. This is when I was put on hold numerous times and passed from rep to rep. None of which would listen to my request to close my account. Instead, the rep Chris I was speaking with continues to sell me on the fact that warm weather is here and that I won't need any oil anyway until the fall. Also, god forbid if something happens at least you have Petro's service to assist with your furnace.
After a long discussion and frustration that they simply would not listen to my request to cancel, I made a horrible decision. I agree to keep my account open. I discussed with Chris in detail that I do not want any deliveries and I want to discuss and agree on pricing before we move forward with anything. Chris assures me that is ok.
4 days ago I received 166 gallons at $4.55 a gallon. I was able to pull up 7 separate competitors that are charging between $2.55 and $3.04. I am so upset and feel like someone has stolen over $300 out of my pocket. I have spoken to a rep who is actually nice named Karen and she advised me that every single customer is on automatic delivery and they would never agree to what Chris and I agreed to.
Kelly informed me that her manager Rich has pulled the phone call and that Rich informed her I agreed to automatic delivery. I have been given Rich's phone number and have called back numerous times in the last few days and I have not received a return call. I would like to hear the recording as I remember the phone call just because of the frustration I had with them not simply terminating our agreement.
I have called Rich and left several other messages. I even called today and was informed he was out to lunch. During my call, the rep says, "Ohh wait. I think Rich is here." She puts me on hold and then comes back and says, "Oh no it was somebody else." She assured me I should receive a call in the next few minutes. I never received a call. I do not understand how they could deceive and lie to me but after reading all the other reviews, I see this is common practice.
Please advise me what my options are since I have now officially terminated my agreement and have an outstanding balance of $756.04. I do not want the oil. Please come and take the 166.2 gallons back. I pay you $425.47, which was the going rate for oil in Norwalk, CT on 11.5.18. We come to some other agreement in which we settle this outstanding bill. Any feedback would be great as I am nervous that you will simply let the bill go delinquent and I receive late charges. I am attempting to end things and have been nothing but calm and respectful throughout this discrepancy. I feel I at least deserve a return call from the person who told me he has a recording of me agreeing to get deliveries. Additionally a rationalization as to why your prices are $2 above market value would be nice.

Original Review: Petro acquired southeastern PA-based Superior - which several years ago acquired Kelly. I have been a customer for well in excess of ten years. For as long as I have been a customer I have called in August or September to arrange for a technician to come to my home to check the heating system in October. October is well before the weather in our area turns terribly cold. I called this year and was told the first available date was in mid-March - if everything works until then why bother to get the system checked. The scheduler tells me they are jammed up with emergency service calls-really, it is not even very cold yet. I was invited to speak to a supervisor, after 10 minutes on hold - really, you want my business. There are other HVAC companies.

When I tried to explain this to the customer service woman, she seemed to be not bothered by what I am trying to explain at all. Put me on hold several times, apparently to talk to my sales rep, but came back with the same answer every time. It was for a one year locked rate of 2.26 which turned out to be a great deal because the cost went significantly up. They made all of their automatic deliveries with no issues until the spring (last fill for season). The guy claimed he ran out of oil (which happens) but said he’d be back. They never came back and I talked to them and refuse to come fill me up cause I’m over a half tank. The real reason is today’s rate for them is near $3.00 and they don’t want to fill me up at the lower rate and because they were unhappy that I didn’t want to renew my contract at their new price of 3.39. Terrible business practice. Will never use or recommend this company to anyone!

We had used Petro Home Services, Princeton, NJ for oil delivery at our Company’s heated garage for years and never had any problem with a delivery. That all changed when our gas furnace died last October. I contacted several installers and was impressed with the Petro salesman and price. While the installation went without a hitch, a second emergency shutoff switch which was included in the contract was not installed. This was corrected but we began to have problems once the work was inspected on January 23rd by Ewing Twp. The electrical installation failed due to what parts were used as well as the fact that some of the work (second emergency shut off switch) wasn’t included on the permit application. I emailed Petro that same day with the items that had to be addressed.
While the work was done within a week I waited for the township to call for a re-inspection. After 2 months I contacted Petro and was told that townships are slow in processing permits and they would get back to me after contacting the township. After another month I contacted Petro again and again a week later for an update. Finally on May 27th I was informed that the township needed a form from the electrician and would then approve the permit. After another 2.5 months I contacted my township directly to see what was going on. I learned that on May 21st the township had approved the permit application and would need a check for $51 for the fee. This was followed up by a fax the next day.
When I told Petro that on August 13th, no one said that the township had to be mistaken in effect admitting that they lied about the form. I was informed that the check would go to the township ASAP. Well on Sept. 9th I finally received the new permit. If the first issue wasn’t enough I determined that we had been overbilled by Petro for the furnace by $400 (it offered an interest-free installment plan). After informing Petro of this fact and following up twice we finally after over two months received the check.
When we purchased the furnace at the end of October it came with a free one-year service agreement. On July 25th, three months before the one-year had expired, we received an invoice for a service agreement payable on demand and a follow up invoice one month later. I had never been contacted by Petro to see if I wanted this service agreement. Integrity and honesty are the first assets you should look for in a vendor. Based on my experience these are sorely lacking at Petro and we will never do business with it again.

We do appreciate your loyalty and are very happy that the situation has been addressed. Don't hesitate to reach out to us should you have any further questions. Regards, Petro Home Services

We have been using the same company for 14 years. We gave the new business in town (York, Maine) a chance to hear about their services. We explained that we had a pellet stove, don't use a lot of oil, we call when we need oil so we don't waste their time and money by delivering a small amount of oil every month, but we were told it's not a big deal. They will come out every month regardless of how little oil is needed. We were locked in a contract for one year and it was a great rate. We received 4 consecutive deliveries and then nothing 5 months.
I called 9/4/18 to cancel the contract when the contract was due to expire for 9/30 and said I would call when we needed oil. I was told I could top off, again, by the end of the current contract at the current contracted rate even though they just delivered oil almost 2 months before. I just called to top off and I was told the contract was cancelled and they could not top off for safety reasons. Neither person prior to mentioned anything about "safety reasons" called "blowback".
We were sold on a contract and it appears to me that when the price of oil was at its peak during the season, they opted not to deliver for several months knowing we had a good contracted rate. If our delivery pattern was low in December and January, why would they deliver 2 more months? If there's a "supposed" concern for "blowback", why were they able to deliver less than $20 worth of oil in one visit? Bait and switch when it came to service, delivery, promises, etc. The contract was good until the end of the month, but they took it upon themselves to cancel early without my knowledge.
It also appears this new company may be paying their employees a bonus to lure customers in, but they're not preparing themselves for not disclosing full and accurate information. They not only lost a customer for oil, which we use about 500 gallons each year, but they also lost the maintenance service we were going to switch to them this year after our contract expired with another company.

When I signed up with Petro, I did also signed up for the automatic monthly budget plan. I provided representative with the credit card info and agreed to all terms and conditions. Somehow they never did monthly withdrawals and suspended my account with making it legal matter. Why to ask for the credit card at the first place? It is both extremely upsetting and disturbing. I used Petro in the past and never had that kind of horrible experience with them.

After 13 years with Hoffberger Oil, I found myself with Petro after they bought the Hoffberger company. I had been on the budget plan for years and was surprised not to receive a bill in September. I sent in my usual monthly payment without a bill sent and by October called to inquire what was happening. "Customer Service" assured me all would be worked out once my first delivery occurred. Upon the first delivery, I still did not receive a bill (I continued to send monthly payments without a bill) and The second month after the delivery I was sent a bill with the full cost of the fuel plus a late fee charge!
Another call to "Customer Service" assured I would be placed on the payment plan and the late fee removed. The next month's bill showed the full cost of a second fuel delivery also due and another late fee. I called again to ask about the payment plan. I was told I had to pay $600.00 of the bill immediately in order to be considered for the payment plan since my bill now was over $500.00. Regardless of how high up the chain of command I went, NO ONE would work to put me on the payment plan without paying $600. I am persistent and determined, but not a nasty customer. I decided at that point, once my plan was paid, I would look for a company that values its customers.

Petro bought out Superior Oil last year (who provided very good service) and at the time we were told to call in July of this year to lock in a rate. When we first called, we were given a quote of $3.08/gallon for the 1st delivery and then the price would increase to $3.31/gallon. At about the same time, a relative was solicited by Luke to become a new customer. The relative was able to lock in a fixed rate of $2.699/gallon for the season. When she called, she spoke with Valerie **, who credited our account $100 because of the referral. We tried to get in touch with Valerie several times but were always told the rep would leave a message for her to call us - no reply call. A second call was placed to Petro and this time the rep stated they were a big corporation and had a lot of overhead expenses which is why they couldnt offer an existing customer close to or the same price per gallon as a new customer.
The rep was to, yet again, have someone return the call but we've heard nothing. A third phone call resulted in an additional $30 credit to pacify us but they are still not willing to lower the price. Another call was placed to the headquarter ph number listed on their website for an email address but we were referred to stargroup.com which didn't offer any information. I can understand a small difference between new and existing customers but $.50/gallon is outrageous. If anyone from Petro reads this and responds, please do not give us the pat answer that your customers are your #1 priority as it states on your brochures and ask that we call your Customer Service Manager. If we are that important to you, you can call us. If you respond, provide an email address where I can private message you our contact info.

Stay far away from Petro Home Services and Rinnai water heaters. Petro Home services installed the unit 3 years ago. That is how long it lasted. Rinnai would not give me a new unit but only new parts. Petro spent an entire day trying to fix the unit. Love the labor charge. In my frustration I told them to replace it the next day. 2500 dollars later I have a new unit. Nothing covered. And paid labor too. It would have been less expensive to install an electric unit. No one in that company advised me about anything. They will sell anything. Customer service is terrible also.

Petro has been delivering oil to my home for quite some time. They always did one delivery every year and I never paid much attention to their pricing. For some reason they did two deliveries this year and I was stuck paying the bill. I decided to look into the charges and as it turns out they are billing 25% higher than Long Island average price per gallon. Example, Long Island average price per gallon is $3.28 for home heating oil but PETRO billed me $4.40 per gallon at over 500 gallons, that's a lot of money. There is a NY Government website that tracks average prices for heating oil for specific areas of NY - NYSERDA. They specifically do this so that companies like PETRO don't take advantage of trusting customers. I tried calling them and reason with them but they wouldn't hear it. I paid them what I thought was a fair price of $3.50 per gallon which is 7% above Long Island average.

Petro's business model is, to recruit gullible customers who think that by signing up with them for oil delivery and service. The customer will think that they have unburdened the headache of dealing with service and delivery of their oil boilers, while in essence they are going to burden themselves with an everlasting dishonest company, that will cheat them repeatedly. I have been blindly paying them their invoices for service of an oil burner and a one time oil delivery on a rental property that I own, assuming that services were rendered. Turn out that they had never repaired the boiler.
After paying more than $1,400 in invoices. I refused to pay them the last invoice of $128 for "the service call" which they told me that I need to replace the boiler and giving me an estimate of $15,000, after paying so much earlier for repairs that were never done. The worst thing about them is that the company cares nothing about customer relationships and is just waiting for their next fish. Just look at the 50-60 of negative reviews on this site and others.

We moved to Long Island in Oct 2017. The Home currently uses oil heat and we set up “budget” contract for 250$ a month. Numerous times we were told that this is a set fee and we would not be charged more. During the coldest winter in year Petro decided to not deliver on time. Strike 1 no heat for several days. Then we called numerous times for days and no response. I had to contact the central Petro office and speak to senior management. Finally the heat was restored.
Strike 2 was the lack of responsiveness. The 3rd and final strike is the random and duplicitous business practices. We received a bill for over 1600$. I contacted the local supervisor who set up my account. He confirmed he had no written contract or details. The budget account is actually paying a portion of the month and that the customer would then pay the difference at the end of the billing cycle. I called Petro centrally and they confirmed that this was incorrect. Despite the constant calls and confirmations that I would not pay more than 250$ a month. I feel duped by these con men and would strongly tell anyone not to work with Petro.

This review is based on TWO times that Petro has left myself and my family waiting in a frozen home for fuel deliveries that were promised, yet never arrived. We called Petro at 5PM on a Friday when our in ground tank ran out of fuel in 24 degree weather. We were promised a delivery between 6PM and 9PM which never came. At 11PM we called Petro and they told us they no longer had trucks out so we would have to wait until the morning. I explained we had 3 small children in the home and were guaranteed a delivery.
The rep did not care. This company is 2 for 2 doing this to us, the prior time last year. Needless to say we canceled our service contract and switched to a more reliable company that hopefully will not mislead us or leave our family (including children and pets) in a frozen home despite promising a delivery and then failing to notify us that the truck would not be coming. This is truly the worst oil company out there. If you have an emergency and need this company to help you. I suggest prayer might be a more useful way to spend the 20 minutes you'll be on hold.

I would like to share this winter's very cold and horrific experience with Petro Home services. I had been on a Petro Home Service Elite program from Nov. 2017 to till Jan. 2018 for my apartment boiler. In November 2017 right after Thanksgiving day, my boiler had been malfunctioning. Then, I had called many time Petro for home services. Their technicians just came and go without fixing the problems. They purposely ignored the problems if boiler parts had to be replaced in order to save their end of expenses.
This had been going on more than a month and I probably had called them more than fifty times. Whenever I had called the supervisor "Michael", he had told us "We are researching the problem." After a month, I finally called different company "Bridge Mechanical" out of Staten Island to fix the problem. Beware customers! They will purposely ignore your problems if they have to replace boiler parts and they will go around the bush without fixing your problems.

When I agreed to a contract with Petro I had asked them to notify me before deliveries are made. (2.09 fixed rate per gallon) Never notified me. They told me I would get 2 deliveries during my contract. I got one, and another one 10 days after my contract was up without notification for $1.00 more per gallon than my fixed price. I called them to try to get my fixed price thinking they were a legit company that wanted to keep costumers. They would only give me a discounted rate if I agreed to their current fixed price. Not a good way to do business and keep customers. I have spoken to them couple times now about the price.
When they sent me a bill last week I called them on Thursday and they put me on hold for 20 minutes and then said they would call me back. They never did. I called them this morning and a guy tells me they will not change the price (3.09 per gallon that was 2.29 during delivery from other companies without a contract). I asked to speak with a manager and he put me on hold a few minutes to tell me they would call me back. Don't do business with these people because they will try to screw you when they get the chance. Now, I understand what they did is correct according to their contract, but how do you get away with charging your customers at least 50 cents above average price at the time. Just wrong!

In as much as it came to a substantial amount ($700+) I was told I could pay it out @ $59. per month with no fee, which I accepted. Petro then (without my knowledge or permission) placed my oil payments on a budget plan (which I have never done in my over 3 decades of dealing with this company). This action led to a series of incomprehensible bills (which took 5 months of calls to finally discover what was done without my consent). In November, I signed up for a Petro account for the water boiler in our new house which powers the heat and hot water. It is an oil delivery and service plan paid on a monthly fixed budget. We needed service on the unit around Thanksgiving time because I remember scrambling around the holiday to make sure we had heat and hot water before a bunch of family were to come over. The reset button had tripped and the unit wouldn't stay running for more than 30 seconds.
I called Petro for service and they said they could make it in a four hour window same day. The guy ended up showing up about 5 hours after the end of the window and said they were backed up normal excuses. The guy said parts needed to be replaced and did the work. Everything was back and running and he assured me he tested the unit and everything was fine. Less than an hour later, I decided to go double check the unit to make sure everything looked ok still. I had about an inch of water covering my basement! I immediately shut off the boiler and made another service call. The same routine went on with the window that they were incredibly late for and I believe I stayed up until about 5am waiting.
They said that I could schedule an appointment the next day but I told them it was an emergency because I was without heat and hot water for the entire day, they had flooded my basement, and didn't actually fix the problem in the first place. While I was waiting, I was trying to shop vac and mop up all the water! Finally, another guy shows up and says more parts need to be replaced. He does some of the work but he doesn't have all the parts so he says another person has to come with the parts. That person shows up in the afternoon of the next day and fixes it and supposedly everything is back to normal. I then fly to Sacramento for a work trip which lasts the rest of the week.
When I return we are scrambling to get ready for Thanksgiving and my wife notices that we don't have any hot water. I go to check the water boiler again. Side note: they replaced the electronics on the water boiler so I spent a lot of time trying to figure out the new settings and adjusting the temperatures. The first guy who repaired the unit obviously set it too high. The last guy must have set it too low I assumed. But that was not the case. The temperatures were fine and the unit was functioning as best I could tell. I make yet another service call and now it is 2 days before Thanksgiving. The entire same routine goes on again and they miss their window by hours.
Finally a guy shows up and says more parts need to be replaced and doesn't have all the parts again! He goes out and gets the parts and comes back and makes more repairs. After he leaves the hot water is working and we run a couple of tests and everything seems fine. The next day during showers we notice that we only have about 5 minutes of hot water. I check everything again but I can't figure out why. I make another call again and when the guy shows up he actually just turns my whole house water pressure down because he claimed that the water was going through the water boiler too fast and not giving it enough time to heat up. I kid you not. He was here about 10 minutes. This seems to have worked however because we did have a normal amount of hot water after that and wow we made it right before Thanksgiving.
So this all sounds terrible right? Someone should be held accountable? Well, fast forward a month later and I check my bill from Petro and not only have they charged me for my monthly budget plan (which I had my bank auto pay and wasn't fully aware there we extra charges until I looked at it myself when I got a past due bill a month later) but they have also charged me for the service and the oil deliveries! All of which is included in the budget plan that I had already been paying monthly! I call them and talk to customer service and they tell me it is their mistake and it will be corrected on the next month's bill. I should just keep paying my monthly budget only! Wow, great news! I can't believe how easy it was to get that resolved.
Fast forward another month. I check my bill again and all the same charges are there! I call customer service again and the first time I get disconnected while trying to tell them the number to best reach me. Not knowing if they got it all, I call back again. I tell my whole story again and they assure me that their supervisor Jacob ** can resolve my issue and he'll give me a call soon. Side note: their phone system is in the stone ages. There are no prompts. It goes straight to a customer service agent. You can't type any extensions. Apparently Jacob was in the field and wasn't picking up his phone so they couldn't transfer me. They had to email him and he would call me back. Of course I have no idea when or what number he is calling from so I miss the call, it goes to voicemail and he gives me an extension to call him back. Of course, you can't enter an extension when calling Petro so I have to tell my story a third time to another rep.
They tell me the exact same thing and Jacob gets another email asking him to call me. He calls me again and this time I see the same number and pick it up. I tell him my whole story. This was very difficult by the way. His listening ability was very poor and he kept cutting me off to explain why the charges were on my account. I tried to explain again that this was their mistake on the bill that they had already admitted to a month ago and had assured me it would be corrected on my bill. I was only calling to follow up and get it resolved. His explanation was that I was only getting charges for the one follow up call to adjust the water before Thanksgiving and that it was not included in my heat and oil ONLY Petro budget plan. This all makes sense except the whole reason why I needed them to come out before Thanksgiving was because they had made faulty repairs before and flooded my basement the week before.
He said that was an unrelated repair and a coincidence that it happened so close together. After much belaboring back and forth on the phone, he finally tells me that he actually can't resolve my issue and that I need to speak to another representative named Kim. He states that he cannot transfer me because he is at a dead end line and that he will contact her and have her call me. I wait around some more. I miss a call from a random number I've never seen. I get a voicemail from Kim. She leaves no extension or last name (not that it would matter anyway).
I try to call back the exact same number but it just routes me back to the normal customer service line and I tell my story yet another time to another person. They can't get a hold of Kim. I explain what Jacob said to me about how he can't resolve the issue and they say that's crazy because he is the guy that resolves issues like this and that Kim wouldn't be able to do anything anyway. They can't get a hold of Jacob and tell me they will email him again to give me another call.
Jacob calls me again and we belabor the same points again to the point where I am so frustrated with the entire process that I ask him if he has a boss that I can speak to. He tells me that his boss' name is George ** and that since it is the end of the day he will not be able to give me a call until tomorrow. I actually thought that he was making it up to get me off the phone and so I ask him about it. He laughs it off and then I try to ask for George's information. Phone number? Extension? Anything! Of course he doesn't have any of this information.
I try to explain to him that I have been playing phone tag with everyone at Petro for about 2 months and after they had admitted their mistake nobody seems to know how to resolve the issue on the bill. I did not want to keep playing phone tag but of course he doesn't have any information on George. I search Petro's website and LinkedIn and I can't find anybody by that name. I am still waiting today for the follow up phone call. I am not sure I will ever get one. I am not sure how I can get their mistake resolved if all the people in power from their company are this difficult to talk to. They seem to be heavily mismanaged and attempt to scam unknowing customers to make up the difference.

I just purchased a house on Long Island. I am new to having oil services. Before signing up with Petro I shopped around. Petro was very nice when I signed up but that was all a trick. We had a problem with our heating unit (only some rooms would get hot). They sent a technician to come take a look. The minute he got to house I felt something was off. The technician needed to see the back of the unit and asked me to move my washer and dryer. Yes I understand it was blocking it but the technician could have helped. After moving the dryer out of his way, he basically told me he cannot fit in that location and I have to do the work. I squeezed into the area to remove the filter that was filthy. He said, "This is why you don't have adequate heating." He said the problem was fixed. I was very thankful.
He then said he also tested the system and that the heating exchange is broken and he has to condemn the unit. He said it can blow up at any time or cause CO in the house. He said he can get a sales technician here within the hour to get it repaired. He made a phone call on his cell phone and within 10 min Petro called me to sell me a unit. Seemed a little sketchy so I brought another company in to take a look. They took the whole unit apart and found nothing wrong. Just to be safe I brought a 3rd company in and they also said there is nothing wrong with my unit. It is just old.
I called Petro back and it took over 2 weeks to speak to someone. That was after me finally calling back. The supervisor Bob said he can send out his lead technician to see what the problem is. My opinion he doesn't want Petro to look bad so the lead technician will say the same thing. I asked to speak to someone regarding my contract possibly someone from sales who sold me everything. I got a phone call from the same guy who tried to sell me the unit. I want someone with authority to call me. I am very unhappy with my services.

We have been with Petro Oil (Maryland) for a few years. The customer service used to be very good as did their prices. We persuaded my mother to also switch to Petro Oil. Now... Things are different. The customer service is sub-par at best and prices are higher than all other local heating oil providers. My mother, who senior citizen and a widow who lives on a very fixed income, was treated very poorly. We will both be leaving Petro at the end of this winter.

Have been with Petro for more than two years, their oil prices are more than $2.00 over published prices in RI, and over 50cents per gallon more than average "high" prices. Service plan is adequate but they are robbing their customers.

We have been customers of Petro for several years. Over the past few years, we rarely needed a service tech come to our home. Recently we experienced hot water leaking from our boiler. We had 2 separate calls with techs come and change parts but problem kept on happening. This time the temp outside was near 5 degrees, we called in for an emergency service call around 2 pm they said the tech will be at our home between 5-8 pm. Great! But not the case, around 9:30 pm we called again and they said the tech was running late and will be at our home by 11 pm. Again we waited, at this point we have a 5 gallon bucket of hot water filling up every 20 minutes! By 12:30 am, still no show, we called again and at this point we had to stay near the burner to keep emptying buckets of hot water, we pleaded with the rep on the phone to have someone come ASAP.
She said they would get here ASAP. Again no tech until 3:30 am! He came in and said he didn't have the parts needed and for us just to shut off the hot water so it stops leaking. Really? We waited all this time for that answer. He left after 15 minutes with nothing done. The tech however did place a call to have another tech come the next day to change a different part and it would cost us $200. We agreed cause we needed hot water and heat. The next day the tech said that our problem was another issue and the parts would cost over $1000 to $1500. He said to have a new boiler installed. We met with that installation rep later that day, (of course they show up when they said since they're making more money off of us). He gave us a quote of $5700 for a new one. We agreed and they came next day to install. 3 guys show up, remove old and install new one.
Fantastic, no more worries. Not the case once again. 3 weeks later, hot water is again leaking from boiler, a few copper pipes were never soldered and came apart and the leaking part wasn't soldered correctly. We called again, a pleasant rep say they will come between 5-8 pm. Again 8:30 pm we call waited 20 minutes to speak to someone and she says the tech won't be at our house for at least another hour or so. We ask to speak to supervisor and none are working at night! They said they will have the supervisor call my husband's cell while at work next morning and of course no one called. No one showed up.
We had to call again and still no resolve to this. New boiler, terrible service and after service contract is up in May, we will no longer be a Petro customer. Do not use Petro! Like us, you will regret your decision, they are total rip offs and I would not be surprised if they are going out of business. Shame on you Petro for totally letting down the customers who keep you in business!

I do have to say I just signed up with Petro Oil a few months ago was set up on a contract plan and make monthly payments. I recently had an issue with my boiler and they came the same day. I was impressed and am glad I chose them. And the best part my contract covers the boiler part so I didn't have to pay. I would recommend their service.

I've had Petro for a few years now, with no serious issues. However, my oil tank was near empty in mid December and I had to call in and request it to be filled, even though I am on an automatic delivery. My first issue with this delivery was the inflated price per gallon of oil, $3.79, when the average price for local companies was around $2.50 to $2.70. Additionally, I was aware that their prices have always tended to be on the high end, but not a dollar more! I called to question the bill and the inflated price, and was told that they charge more because of their superior service, and received a forty dollar credit. I also let them know that it seemed very convenient for them to supply me with oil at an inflated price when my tank was so low.
Following this delivery, I had an issue that caused my thermostat to no longer function, which is covered by my contract, that took over three weeks to get resolved, getting their customer service to actually follow through with the schedule took two weeks alone. When the technician finally came out to my residence, I find out that the information customer service provided him was mostly incorrect, but the technician was still able to resolve the problem. I really can't say anything bad about any of the field technicians, I have encountered thus far, and find them both helpful and knowledgeable.
Now we come to today, 1/30/2018, I get home and find an oil bill attached to my door. At first I thought, why so soon; my tank is not even half empty, but then I look at my bill and realized that the price per gallon was inflated yet again. This time the price was $4.35 per gallon, while the average price per gallon of oil in my area is still the same. I called to discuss my bill, and was basically told that I am entitled to my opinion, and it is what it is. As a customer of Petro, I feel taken advantage of, ripped off, belittled, and blatantly lied to. I would love cancel my contract or get oil from another company, but in doing so Petro would bill me for breach of contract. In the end, I'll find a better business to provide heating services in the future.

Service contract for 350.00 and they still charge for service 200.00 dollars for a thermostat. When you call the 800-number for service or a oil delivery which you have automatic delivery, on hold for 20 minutes or longer. Cancel both service contract and automatic oil delivery.

I am in shock reading the reviews. I cannot say enough good things about Petro. Their customer service is stellar and cannot be beat. Charles is always there for you and he provides his mobile phone should he not be in the office. Deliveries are prompt and if we need service they are there in just a few hours. I have no problems with their pricing and I do check oil prices periodically. Petro’s always in line with other RI companies. In my mind Petro has been a 5 Star oil company for the 4 yrs we’ve been with them. Thank you Charles for all you do for us.

I have been a customer of Petro for over 22 years, and have only recently noticed that the price they are charging me for oil was over $1.00 per gallon above NYSERDA prices for Long Island. When I confronted them with this situation, they claimed that I needed to purchase a capped price contract in order to receive a lower price. This is nothing more than a sham, to lock you into an expensive contract that you cannot cancel without a stiff penalty. They also claimed that they needed to charge more for their oil because they have 24/7 service. Really? Read the other reviews about their service and decide for yourself if it's worth it to do business with them.

I had my hot water heater replaced in October 2017. Well since then I’ve had a technician come 6/7 time because it has been leaking. I was told I got a faulty hot water heater and it would be replaced. It is now January still no replacement heater. Oh and now the pressure pipe is leaking because it has been let go for so long. I had a technician come out on 1/16/17 who couldn’t do anything except for “just turn the hot water valve off”. Yes that really solves my problem of no hot water in my house. My basement is getting ruined and my patience is getting thin. This is not acceptable at all especially when there is a infant in the home that I have told the technicians and customer service multiple times.

I have been with Petro oil for over 2 years and everything has been fine. I knew I was paying a little more than market price on my oil because I was on the automatic delivery plan. I got a bill last week. It looked high. After talking to people and looking online, they absolutely gouged me. They charged me $3.85 per gallon... when the market rate on that day was $2.65. I called them on Friday the 12th and they said no one was there to talk about it. I just received a call today (1/17) and they said there was nothing that they could do. The end result is that I have to pay close to $300 higher because of their business model. They jack your price if you're not paying attention. My guess is that this company will not be in business too much longer.
