I have 2 EZ Passes in my household. One on my car, and one on my wife's car. For the last 4 years, EZ Pass had my wife's car under PASI 'Commuter Plan' which was supposed to reduce our overall costs for going over Staten Island's four bridges. What they failed to mention is that if you do not cross a bridge 20 times every 35 days, there is an automatic $120 charge. My wife's car usually crosses a bridge only 4 to 5 times every 35 days on average.
I called at the end of October to complain about this issue once I read my statements. I was told I would receive a refund within a few weeks. I called back on November 9, 2011 to ask when I would be receiving the refund and for how much. I was told the refund would be $278 and it could take up to 20-21 business days from the time of complaint. In addition to this issue, my car's tag had an a an auto replenishment of $30.
E-Z Pass automatically changed this auto replenishment to $100 without my consent. The first payment was made on November 4, 2011, the next payment was taken out on November 25, 2011. I called to see how this was possible because I do not regularly go over any bridges. I was told I had used $100 worth of charges but they could not go over the charges with me. I'd have to wait for my statement.

I was sent a notice of toll violation for a car that I sold three weeks before the date of violation. The Port Authority insists the license plate is still registered to me. Not. The fine is $12 PLUS a $50 fee. They have made me liable even after I've signed, under penalty of perjury, a statement of non-ownership. I am now having to spend at least two hours of uncompensated time to get them off my back.

I am not an E-ZPass customer. I am being charged a $25.00 Administration Fee for an unpaid toll, which I have since remitted. The toll was not paid because the booth was unmanned (NJ Trnpk Exit 4). It is the second time that this has occurred this year. E-ZPass says that they only issue one "courtesy dismissal" within a 12 month period. When I called to dispute it, I was told that is was simply agency policy. Am I going to have to continue to pay fees for conditions over which I have no control over?

After coming home from a trip across the country, I received a notice of toll violation, which obviously I did pay. Otherwise, I wouldn't be writing this. I have a complete financial record of the trip, all expenses - gas, tolls, and hotels. There would be no reason for me to not want to pay the toll. All of my expenses were reimbursed. EZ Pay is a for profit business. How can they have so much power, as to take away our rights to defend ourselves? They should not be omnipotent!

I got violations in 2009. $25.00 for my credit card did not go through due to I got a new card and it has different expiration date. I paid by money order in 2009. Still, it's sitting in my account (due balance of $25.00). I tried calling the customer service and I am not able to talk to a person who can help. I need help.

I logged into my account yesterday to update my credit card for my EZPass and for the first time, I noticed that the license plate they had for my car was wrong and was also clearly fake, as it was something like 12345B. It's not the exact number but it was something very close.
I called them to give them my correct license plate number and then found out that I owed money for toll violations from back in 2008, which they apparently only sent one notice out for which I never got. Had my correct license plate been registered with my account, the tolls would have simply been taken from my account.
I paid the tolls due, along with the extra ridiculous fees that they charged, and then realized that I shouldn't have to pay unless they could explain to me how they got that weird license plate affiliated with my account. So, I called back and basically got nowhere. The guy was rude and refused to let me speak with a supervisor. He told me that there was nothing else they could do for me and if I wanted more information on the vehicle affiliated with 12345B, I'd have to talk to the MVA. I told him what I wanted was to know how they got that license plate for me as I've never had any other one except for my current one. He was unable to tell me, except to say that it never went through any tolls. I told him that, of course, it didn't because it's clearly a fake number.
I recently left my EZPass at home early last week and haven't gotten the notice of fines due yet, but I am sure that I'm going to get it and the fines are going to be hefty, all because they had the wrong license plate on file for me and they cannot tell me where they got that information from. They can't even say for sure that I was half asleep one day and added it to my account online; they just have no information on it and no explanation for it. I asked to speak with a supervisor, three times, but I was refused.

EZ Pass charged my account a one-time fee of $135.00, without my permission. Secondly, we had a transmitter fail during my husband's trips through the tri-state. PA and DE, so easy to deal with. The issue was cleared up in one day. New Jersey: I spent over $150.00 in postage, calls and excessive charges to my account and they still have not resolved. They had the nerve to send me to collections, of which they received a certified letter from me stating they cashed my check. There is fraud in NJ and people want Chris Christie to run for President. May God help us all. Their state is the most ineffective state in this area.

On I-90 in Boston, there is a tollgate avoidance u-turn off-ramp that veers very close to the actual tollgate. It's so close that if you have a toll-pass transceiver, a toll is registered! This means that if you have credits, you'll get charged, and if you don't, you'll get a ticket! I've already contacted the mass pike office, and they rescinded the ticket, so that's a good thing. However, they need to get it fixed. I'm hoping that others that were hurt by this scam will find this helpful. The u-turn in question is the hairpin off-ramp just South of the gate.

I've been a NYS E-Z Pass customer since it's inception. In April 2011, my American Express card was lost. I called American Express to cancel the old card and issue a new one. The replenishment of my E-Z Pass accounts were tied to the old American Express account that was canceled.
In June 2011, I received multiple violation notices from E-Z Pass for May 2011, due to my E-Z passes having an insufficient balances. I then contacted E-Z Pass to: 1) provide my new cc# and 2) to dispute the violation charges. I was told to submit the violation dispute in writing, which I did on two separate occasions.
Both disputes were returned with the same notation: "Insufficient Account Balance. " Did they even read the dispute?

I was issued a summons for an unpaid ezpass toll in Delaware. This would be impossible as I have ezpass in my car and there is direct withdrawal for my account. I sent in an appeal and they sent it back with "not enough information sent" (they need a statement showing good standing). The appeal had to be back a week later or they would fine me again.
I wasn't able to get my account information online so I had to call NJ ezpass (the state I live in) to send it to me. They would not fax it but only snail mail it. It's a week later and I still haven't received it. I am now sending in the money so I don't have to deal with this anymore. I can see from the other letters that the government is just trying to find another way to take our money.

Two alleged toll violations resulted in months and hours of headache, despite 3 witnesses seeing "ok paid" confirmations going through these tolls. NJ EZ Pass now says that there is a flaw in the system. They said that "ok paid" does not mean exactly that. It lets car pass through in order to avoid holding up traffic. We have had NY EZ Pass for the past several years. We were confused after receiving notices saying that there were toll violations. We called EZ Pass. They told us our account was current. We considered the notices were in error, yet we continued to get notices. We called NJ and NY. Neither one of them could figure out what was going on. It was only in July 2011 that we realized that NY and NJ were separate companies that do not communicate with each other.
We refused to pay $50 in administrative fees on a $1.75 toll. We have complied as best we could, under the veil of confusion that these companies create to cheat hard working drivers of money beyond the ridiculous tolls. I have a recording of today's conversation which was full of rude and eye opening comments. I'm glad but also shocked to find out that NJ EZ Pass lulls drivers to believe that their toll was paid, only to hit them with ridiculous administrative fees. They give drivers the burden of proof to research their accounts at their own peril.
NJ EZ Pass knew that we had disputed the charges and we were in active discussion/discovery of what was going on. Despite this, they sent this to collections. And now they say that even though they know that we have a NY EZ Pass, it's now too late. We either pay up the admin fees or suffer collections. I will be taking them to small claims court. I will blog about the entire experience. I will provide a recording of their supervisor telling me that "ok paid" really means move along and we'll get you later with admin fees before you realize what's going on. It's a scam. I bet they make millions on this scam. Everyone needs to know this.

On my most recent EZ Pass monthly statement dated 05/08/11/-07/07/11 (account number **), I noticed two excessive charges. One is in the amount of $24.00 (transaction date 06/04/11 at 19.39 hours) and the second is on 07/04/11 in the amount of $25.00 at 21.16 hours. Both charges were from the Delaware Memorial Bridge toll plaza. My EZ Pass plan is basic/class 02. These charges were for a class 6 and a class 5 vehicle.
I contacted NJ EZ Pass on or about July 13, 2011. This was after I received a notice from the bank that EZ Pass accounting had deducted two $25.00 charges from my bank account, overdrawing the account and causing me to incur a $35.00 bank overdraft fee. I was told they would investigate and get back to me. While I have been in contact with several times, this mess remained unresolved to date. I was told last week on 08/08/11 that one credit had been issued back into my account and one was still under investigation. The credit was not issued to my account as of 08/14/11.
I have been an EZ Pass customer since 2000. I have never been any pay class but 02. I never had a trailer on my vehicle and never driven a tractor trailer. It appears to me this company refuses to resolve issues in a timely manner under the guise of workload volume. They are however quite adept at replenishing monetary accounts in a swift and unquestioned manner. (Hours vs Weeks) There is no easy way on their web site to complain directly to them. And the phone system also offers no department for conflict resolution.

I was sent a violations notice, claiming that I ran through a cash/E-ZPass lane without paying my 50cents. I had paid. The machine was broken. The car in front of me had this happen. It happened to my car. It happened to the car behind me (people we were travelling with, so that makes 4 eye-witnesses total). So, anyone should have realized that the machine was broken when they saw all the extra unaccounted for coins combined with the huge run of "unpaid" cars. Still, they are trying to make a bundle by fining us all $25 plus 50 cents.
The plaza was 142 lane 4 on 7/15 at 5p.m., roughly. I'm hoping that by posting this, others who used the lane that same day might find each other. I know it's a long shot, but I don't know how else to complain about this. I will be calling them in the morning, but it's not right to randomly send out violations when it's obvious that the machine was broken. It's also unfair that these are unmanned toll booths, so you can't even wait for a cashier from another booth to help you or any such easy solution one might consider.

I have been an EZ Pass customer for 10 years. The only time I had a problem with them is in Richmond VA. My EZ Pass is attached to my credit card. So when the balance is low, the funds will be automatically deducted. In March 2011, I received a letter saying I had toll violations, and the account was going to collections for charges dating back until 2010. On my initial call, I spoke with a representative at EZ Pass who ended up hanging up on me. I called back and spoke with a "manager", who allegedly removed all the extra fees and charged my account what was owed. Now, I received a letter from an attorney saying I am going to court if I don’t pay the $16 violations, the $35 charged/violation and their $100 admin fee! Again, we called EZ Pass and I am told they are showing that I don’t owe any money. The next day, I got a call from EZ Pass saying that I didn’t pay EZ Pass what I owe for using the Pocahontas 895 toll road. I called EZ Pass back again. They said I have to call the 895 toll road and get this resolved, even though this is an EZ Pass toll road. My question is, if this is automatically deducted, what is going on? Of course, they couldn’t tell me why the money wasn’t deducted, but they sent me letters. And now, I have to call the attorney’s office.

About a month ago I Received a Violation on my Golf Cart Vehicle for not paying a toll in some off ramp in New Jersey; I am now on my SECOND NOTICE from the State of New Jersey about this Violation. I have sent in TWO letters of Dispute. I did not drive in New Jersey the day of the Violation and My Golf Cart CAR surely could not have possibly made the trip either. The Picture that was sent to me did show a license with my tag Number But the car shows a Trunk Space and my Golf Cart only has a back window.
It seems to me that they are Unlawfully Fishing for the Violator. I just wonder how many other Similar Tags are being held under this same Violation. If the State cannot be read on the tag then there should be no Violation Issued. Today the violations clerk hung the phone up on me. She told me they had received my last faxed Dispute and it would take another 3-4 days for the decision. The form I just received states that if payment is not received before the 21st of July I could be subject to a civil penalty of up to $500.00.
I clearly do not understand why this wasn't rectified immediately from the first notice. Now the case has been disputed twice and with the car in question being basically a GOLF CART, it's getting Ridiculous. Come on NEW JERSEY they should be ashamed of themselves. How about a little Common Sense.

I travel the ICC to/from work everyday. I didn't realize my credit card linked to my EZPass had expired because there are no warning lights on the ICC nor did I receive anything in the mail. I then received a bill in the mail plus a $3 fee each of the 16 violations I had before I caught the expiration. I appealed the $3/violation fee online because I felt I'd hadn't been told about the expiration.
I have a email receipt that they received my complaint online via their website. However, a few weeks later I was stunned when I received a bill in the mail for $440.60 for $22.60 worth of tolls. I called the help line immediately and they told me the never received my appeal and I would have to file an appeal by fax. I did this and included my email proof I had filed the original appeal. I signed up for EZ Pass because I have to commute from New Jersey to Long Island, New York, everyday. It's faster and pretty simple, right? -- until you have an account for a few months and your "$25" charge turns in to a $395 charge each month. I buy coffee at the same place everyday but if the guy charged me $50 for the month in the beginning of the month, he would be in jail for theft and credit card fraud. So why can EZ Pass get away with this? It's granted that I do use a lot in tolls, about $20 a day, but my bank account has limited money deposited in it to cover my costs. There are days, even weeks, that I do not commute but this toll booth, Nazi's, has already depleted my account with no recourse of recovering the money they stole.
I had used my fiance's vehicle for a month during the winter. She has been charged over $200 on several occasions and was, until she had a screaming match with EZ Pass to stop charging her card. EZ Pass just "assumes" what you will use and bills you. You know the old saying about assuming. Please note: I want to file a class action lawsuit against EZ Pass, and request everyone who has dealt with them and had wrong-doings, or those who just disagree with their practices of theft by deception to e-mail me at: **. Lawyers are welcome to contact me, but no ambulance chasers. If you can't ride this out to Congress, don't bother. I'm ** off, kicking ** and taking name: EZ Pass!

I have had an EZ pass account now for about 3 years. I requested to close my account about 6 months ago because I realized that EZ pass was steadily taking money out of my account even though I haven't used my transponder in almost a year. Then about a month ago, I got a letter from EZ pass saying that I accrued $219 in unpaid tolls and $2700 in fees. How is this possible. I have an EZ Pass account that I had automatic payments made to but when they continued to charge me every month, the $25 replenishment was not enough.
Why wouldn't it show on my EZ Pass account that I had all these unpaid tolls. There were only two times during the year period of 02/09-03/10 that they complained about that my account was negative and I instantly added first $75 then $100 to correct the unpaid tolls. This is absolutely insane. EZ Pass is ridiculous. Now I have to pay $540 by 4 p.m. today! Or I'll owe them the full $3000+. Never again is all I have to say. I don't have and don't want EZ Pass nor do my 4 teenage and young adult children. Having dropped a quarter on a .75 cent toll, I beeped and proceeded and several days later, got a $25.75 violation. I paid the .75 cents and filled out the back where it clearly states not having the proper change is not a reason to have the administrative fee waived. I refuse to pay it and am now up to a potential %500 fine. My town just got an EZ Pass only, not manned exit costing $3. I accidentally got off it. I got a violation several days later for $28. I paid the toll which I owed and am now on another $500 penalty for not paying the $25.00 administrative fee. I have contacted the Press, my Senator and assemblyman.
From the latter, I am asked why I don't get EZ Pass. I don't want it. What if I didn't have a credit card to get it? What if I don't feel like monitoring it with all my kids for errors? What if I don't want to cost real people on the roadways their jobs to automation? How much money is being raised from non manned exits through administrative fees? This EZ is as criminal as our elected officials who are letting this tax. At the end of May, the Delaware River Joint Toll Bridge Commission installed two high speed E-Z Pass lanes at the I-78 toll plaza, of which I have used since. It was August 22, 2010 two weeks ago when I got my monthly EZ Pass statement via email. I noticed that my replenishment charge went up from $5.00 to $25.00. I also noticed that my Grand Island Bridge charge went up from $0.15 to $0.95. I called EZ Pass and the person there said that the increase for the bridge charge was because I no longer had the GI bridge commuter package.
I informed them that I did in fact receive a letter from EZ Pass several months ago stating that unless I called to keep the GI Bridge plan active that it would become inactive. I informed them that I did call immediately to keep the plan active. They informed me that they had no record of that call and asked if I knew who I spoke with and if I still had the original letter. I had neither. I asked them if at this point they could reactivate my GI Commuter plan and they said that I would have to send them a letter requesting this. I asked if they could send me the same letter that I had received originally, they agreed.
Two weeks later, still no letter. I called today and after getting no satisfaction from the CSR, I asked to speak to a supervisor. Bill informed me that the $25.00 replenishment charge was due to the fact that my account was new and that was the standard charge now for all new accounts. I informed him that my account was not new and that I had the same account now for many years. I asked that since it appears to be a mistake on their end, that I should be grandfathered in and keep my $5.00 replenishment charge as it was.
I was informed that he would send up a request to put my old account requirements back into effect. I was also informed that there would be no guarantees and to check back in about 1 week to see if anything was changed. Bill was helpful and offered up his phone number and employee ID. I hope this has a happy ending. For new account holders, when your account drops below $10.00, EZ Pass whacks you with a $25.00 charge. How can this increase by 5X overnight?

Last week they sent a new violation, this one with a service fee of $25 attached. I called and spoke with someone who insists they sent a denial of the appeal via email (I keep all my emails, they never sent any such email) and refused to agree to any kind of hearing whatsoever.
I can see from other complaints that this is the way E-ZPass does business and I have found investigative reports confirming it. I believe that refusing a hearing is denial of due process. When will the states that hire E-ZPass for their toll services demand that their citizens be treated fairly?

I paid the $5.00 toll as I did owe that amount. But I refused to pay the $3.00 fine as I did nothing wrong. I did ask for an explanation for the $3.00 fine.
In response ,Maryland EZ Pass issued me another bill for the $3.00 fine, plus another $25.00 administration fee and threatened to suspend my vehicle registration if I did not pay the fines immediately. And no explanation for the $3.00 fine. Now, I am not a lawyer, but Marylands last notice boarders on extortion and is very insulting to say the least.
I do not understand how an organization like EZ Pass MD got so arrogant and would use the bully position of power to extort money from law abiding citizens. I can prove all the details above, including the person at Del EZ Pass who tested and approved my transponders. I would like to see this organization investigated for improper business practices to say the least. The damage is financial hardship, time I have had to spend proving that MD EZ Pass was wrong, and now trying to understand why I must pay this fine or else, no matter what I say.

I have an EZ pass on my windshield but I received notifications of violations. I have never evaded a toll. If it registers at tolls before and after, that says I am paying my way. I am not sure if this is just NJ's way of generating additional revenue. But it is very unfair that I now have to pay $53 when I did nothing wrong. It is nothing short of thievery. I am now nervous of driving on the parkway and turnpike as I am fearful that I will get additional violation notices.

I have received violations for not paying a dollar toll, which is untrue. Then on top of the violation, there’s an add-on $25.00 administrative fee. I have written them on the website and sent letters. I have not received a response. Every time I drive to New Jersey, I make sure I have enough change and singles to pay all of the tolls. These particular $1.00 tolls do not have toll clerks or give receipts. You throw your change into the bucket and the light will say paid in green letters. I have been reading many complaints by other motorists regarding this type of issue. They are raging mad about this racket that New Jersey is imposing on motorist.
I refuse to pay this and I want this rectified. I will tell you one thing. I am going to start taking my camera with me. And when I approach the tolls again, various angles of pictures will be taken because I have a feeling this will continue. I look forward to you addressing this issue. The violation number is: **. There was no physical damage but this could mess up my credit score or my driver’s license since I refuse to pay. This is a racket NJ has going on and I will not be part of it. I work very hard for every dollar I earn and I will not repay for something I already paid for.

But EZ never even told me about these admin fees or that they were going to a collection agency. This is all done behind my back and is bogus. It is a sleazy deal that EZ Pass made with a collection agency and makes it difficult for the consumer to fight because EZ Pass will say they are out of the loop.

I just found out by talking with Maria. I was told the violation was paid along with the administrative fee. I should not have paid the admin fee. Also, if I was told that if I wanted to have my account adjusted and have the $97.00 balance applied to my account, I would have to send them a copy of the canceled check front and back. They have had my money for 2 weeks now, and they will not apply the money until I send the canceled check. I do not see how this could be legal.

I have been an EZPass account holder for 13 years. Three years ago, I disputed 46 toll violations due to an expired credit card by filling out the back of each violation form with my current transponder # and even called to make sure it was corrected. The CSR indicated that it would take awhile for the system to update. When I called back to follow up, I was told that the violations had already been sent to Alliance One for collections. Evidently, NJ EZPass' system is not programmed to scan plate numbers against their account data base prior to sending out violations with $25 fees attached.
I contacted Alliance One and was told to send proof that the account was in good standing. I did one better and sent my copies of each violation dispute form and a years worth of account statements showing the monthly replenishment and charges to the account. Last Friday, I saw all 46 violations listed on my current account and $677 in charges. When I called, I was told that once the violations go to Alliance One, EZPAss will not adjust the collection amount with Alliance One even though they knew I am and have been an account holder in good standing the entire 13 years of my account history.

I seldom drive this way. Somebody is going to wind up getting killed at this plaza if they haven't already. I called and they dropped the administrative charges. Hopefully, the sheer amount of complaints on this site will lead them to change this plaza.

This includes the minimum amount of money in your account, as well as when it should be replenished. In my circumstance there is always 200 dollars of my money they are holding. I use a maximum of 20 dollars a day in tolls. Why should it be be up to them to replenished at 200 dollars?

Driving from Ohio to New Jersey and not being familiar with the roadway, I approached a toll station and I was in the wrong lane for cash. All vehicles were approaching at speeds exceeding 50 MPH, and I had to cross several lanes of traffic at the risk of getting into an accident to get into what I believed to be the correct lane to pay my $1.00 toll in cash. The sign above the toll booth said "E-Z Pass/Cash". When I got to the toll booth, the toll taker said very sarcastically, "nice move" referring to my crossing several lanes of fast moving traffic and then took my $1.00. I got the green light to proceed.
A few weeks later I received a letter in the mail that I used the E-Z Pass lane unlawfully and that I still owed the toll plus a $25.00 administrative fee. I replied to them similarly to this correspondence and they wrote back saying that my response did not conform to their regulations and that I still owe the fine. Of course, $25.00 will not send me to the poor house, but it is taking its toll (excuse the pun) on me psychologically. Why the heck should I have to pay the toll again? Why is there a $25.00 administrative fee? And what happened to the $1.00 toll I already paid? The toll takers pocket perhaps?

Three times they did as asked and lowered the amounts to $10 threshold and $25 replenishment (not sure why they kept going up to begin with).
Today, I noticed my card was hit for $100 from EZ pass. They apparently raised my amounts again for no reason. I used my EZ pass this Sunday to go to Brooklyn. The use is very limited--once a month, maybe twice a month if we had some family functions. Nothing that warranted them raising my amounts not to mention with no notice. How can you dispute these violations when you don't have any proof to show?
They only take pictures of your car after passing through the booth. They should take pictures of drivers in cars while paying as well. Also, one incident was one of the tolls I went through had a defective basket. It just kept swallowing the coins and the green light never turned green neither did it turn green for the car that was immediately in front of me. I have read a lot of complaints about the Atlantic City Expressway and Garden State Parkway EZ pass tolls and I hope that our complaints will be addressed and acted upon. This is so very unfair. I am recording my experiences with EZ Pass here, because I now suspect there is more to this problem than simple incompetence or error. I received a violation by mail. While I was on the Parkway on the date and time indicated, I did pay a cash toll. The vehicle in front of me sat for a few moments before I could pull up to the toll basket to put my coins in. I carefully put in 4 quarters making sure each one went in before depositing the next. After all 4 quarters (a $1 toll) were deposited and accepted, I did not get a green light to go. I waited as the sign instructed and then honked since it never turned green and I had paid my toll.
I responded to the violation with this information and asked that they checked the time stamps of the toll booth to see how many people were being charged with a violation to see if one person had not paid the toll in front of me or if they have a defective basket. They responded that this explanation does not support the dismissal of the violation. That is fine but on principal, I have paid my toll and will not submit another dollar plus 25 for their administration fee. I believe this is a scam - if they can charge all these fines, then they can check their cameras, computers and toll collection equipment. I will respond to this but they don't provide much information to do this with - pretty much backing you into a corner. I take huge issue with this and will file a complaint with every consumer agency I can find regarding this.

I promptly filled out a dispute form, pulled my NY EZPass statement, and sent it all with a cover letter explaining the error.
I was quite livid when I received a reply a month later stating "We carefully reviewed your dispute." and concluded that "Your EZ Pass account is outside of New Jersey and cannot be debited for the amount due." They reiterated their request for the $0.50 toll and the $25.00 administrative fee. I contacted them by telephone and was told that neither my letter nor my EZ Pass statement was received and that I should resubmit them. This is extremely bad business. I could understand if the RFID transponder was not read or if the EZ Pass account was not in good standing or depleted of funds. However, in this case, the toll was properly paid and evidence was presented to support this. Hopefully, on the second go-round, I may have more success. They did eventually dismiss the charge - of course without offering any compensation for my time and trouble. The company is also ruthless regarding inadvertent toll violations. If you are in the wrong lane in high-speed traffic, they expect you to slam on the brakes and then drive recklessly to get into the right lane or they will charge you $25.
We recently missed a toll for this reason, did everything in our power to pay the toll as soon as possible (we sent it in by mail, prior to receiving a violation notice) and still they will not stop sending us notices demanding the $25 fine. This is in regards to what looks like extortion in the New Jersey EZ Pass system. I see others have noted the same thing over the years. I think it's time to stop this scam. I am a Connecticut resident who recently began traveling to New Jersey via the Garden State Parkway. There looks to be extortion aimed at out of state drivers via the EZ Pass System in New Jersey. Here is the situation: there are toll plazas on the Garden State Parkway (location PVK is one) where it is not clear a toll is due. Motorists are being sent photos of their license plates after traveling to New Jersey in the mail with a bill due, for the 50 cent toll plus a $25 administration fee for a total of $25.50.
I had this situation occur three times in the past few weeks for a total of $75 in fees for what would have been $1.50. I have tried to explain to the state of New Jersey via telephone but the phone system will not let non EZ Pass holders speak to anyone. I sent a letter in dispute and was rejected. At that point, I did some checking. There have been numerous complaints by others regarding the same toll areas in New Jersey. The tolls are not clearly marked and unsuspecting motorists are not given a chance to properly pay before receiving these administration fees that are 50 times the amount of the tolls in question. This is on the verge of what looks to be extortion in New Jersey EZ Pass system. I can't believe this has been going on for as long as it has. I read somewhere else that the EZ Pass system is in debt and that they are trying to pay for the system with $25 fines.

But what I didn't expect was to be paying $70+ a month for a Staten Island discount I don't ever use. How I realized this? When the EZ Pass funds were low, I replenished to the tune of $146. No email (which is on file), no letter, nothing. I only found out when I saw overdraft fees on my checking account statement. The card I have on file with them is a debit card, which means this money came directly from my checking/savings account. Taking that money out without my consent or any notification is basically like stealing from me. They also increased my Replenish Threshold to $37.50. I sent off a complaint via email only to receive a response stating a letter would be sent with an explanation. That was 2 months ago. I am still waiting for that letter. I have since removed my debit card from the account and now log on frequently to make certain my balance does not fall below $38. I refuse to add a credit card to the account and let them do as they wish with my money.
Today with a balance of $62 on my card, the toll sign said 'Account Low'. That cannot be. I logged on this morning and saw $62 balance. In reviewing my account, I now see they have again increased my Replenish Threshold. Now it is up to $75. Who do they think they are and how are they able to get away with this? I view this as stealing. They do not get to tell me how much money I should have on the tag. This situation is just not acceptable and I am quite prepared to fight them on this.

I have NJ EZ Pass. I replenish my account as often as needed. If you have a NJ tag and it says you have a low balance when you go through a toll, you would (should) go online to investigate and add funds. You can see those tolls you went through and they will be paid when funds are sufficient. Now let's say you have a low balance and you use a NY toll bridge. You know you have a low balance and you replenish. You would think the NY toll is also taken care of, until you get a notice in the mail with a fee and the toll charge that NY expects you to pay! Turns out if you call NY, they'll explain that NY doesn't have access to your NJ account to capture payment like NJ does.
Hmm... But NJ also lets you replenish your account (takes your money) with NY violations floating around out there, which they have no clue of and which you thought would be (should be) taken care of because you replenished your account! It seems like a racket to me. So, I suggested I get a NY tag too. The woman on the line said, "You can't have two EZ Pass accounts." Hmm... If you use a NY toll and funds are low in NJ EZ Pass and you add funds to your account, you're still screwed. A fine and toll is on its way but you still can't have two accounts. So, I guess EZ Pass is not worth it. Basically, the aggravation is more expensive.
I think if you are a customer of NJ EZ Pass, they should have a system that has your back and informs you that NY has violations on your account or NJ should divvy up the replenishment money and have access to it all, and take care of the consumer and share the funds so all is right. Needless to say, I will be cancelling my NJ account and using non-toll roads. I think something is wrong with the operation of this system. I can't have two tags, NY can't capture money from your EZ Pass account if you use a different state, you get a violation and there is no explaining the fee plus the toll must be paid. Not fair at all.

This was deducted from my account which brought my account balance to $9.5. Unknown to me, E-ZPASS attempted to replenish the $25.00 from the credit card that I had mistakenly cancelled. According to my June statement, I was charged $40.00 which Manuella explained to me was a $10.00 fee for each E-ZPASS I have under my account because my balance was under $10.00.
Once again, something is wrong here. They have the right to charge $10.00 per E-ZPASS because they only have $10.00 of my money on account. I cover my children's E-ZPASS under my account. Also, due to family matters this past May, June and July, I had not reviewed my E-ZPASS online statements. I explained these circumstances to Manuella; however, her only response was that I could return the other E-ZPASSes for a credit of $69.00. At the end of July, I made a trip to Staten Island, crossing the Verrazano Bridge; however, at that time I was stopped on the bridge and my E-ZPASS was removed by an MTA Bridge Authority employee. I paid the $11.00 to go over the bridge.
I had not been able to address this issue until recently due to work and family commitments. I reviewed my August statement yesterday after receiving an account revocation notice from E-ZPASS (MTA - Bridges and Tunnels). My August statement has three transactions I don't understand and I was not able to get an explanation from Manuella. The charges are “tag dep trf to pptl” for $10.00, prepaid adj cr for $10.00, and retained tag fee for $25.00, which yields an account balance of $45.46. The revocation notice has the following fees: previous open balance, -$45.46, account revocation fee, -$25.00, lost tag fee, -$69.00, tag deposit forfeited, $30.00, and final amount due subject to collection, -$109.46.
I explained to Manuella that this was a result of an oversight on my part. I explained to her in detail the circumstances and also the fact that this was basically an oversight and not an intentional or criminal act on my behalf; however, I think I am being treated as a criminal. It appears that the $69.00 can be credited to my account according to Manuella if I send back the other E-ZPASSes. This whole process is wrong and, in my opinion, is immoral and another case of Joe Public being screwed by the MTA. Manuella neglected to tell me how or where to send the E-ZPASSes and I forgot to ask because I was so upset on the outcome of attempting to resolve this issue.

I received my EZ Pass bill and noted that I was charged for services that I did not use. I informed the customer service and was informed that they could not do anything about it. On June 6, 2009, they received a check from me for $100. On June 27, 2009, I am charged for times and I never used the EZ Pass. On July 4, 2009, I was charged twice and I never used the EZ Pass. What can I do? Whom can I really turn to?

I traveled via the GW Bridge at around 12:30am on Monday. Since all other lanes were marked E-ZPass, I moved to the extreme right lane. But there was no one to collect cash. I read a board mentioning that you will be charged later, and there was a huge lineup of vehicles behind me, so I had to move on. After around a month, I am being asked to pay an administrative fee of $10 and toll violation of $33. I don’t know why I should be paying the fine, when there were no boards indicating that cash customers are not allowed, the cash counter is closed. There was a huge line up of cars behind me. I am wondering if all are being asked to cough up the $43.

On Saturday afternoon, 2/28, I inadvertently went through an EZ Pass toll on the NJ Turnpike S. - I had just left NYC and was heading home. I realized what I had done and went to a toll where I could pay. I was charged the full amount of $7.70 at my exit, 15W, and received a receipt. EZ Pass sent a toll violation indicating the date of the infraction as Friday, 1/23, at 3:30 pm. There was a violation fee of $25 for the $.90 toll. I am a high school English teacher in NJ.
On a Friday afternoon, I would not have been entering exit 15W. I forwarded the receipt to EZ Pass along with a letter. EZ Pass rejected my dispute based upon the discrepancies between the date on the receipt and the date on their violation documentation. When I called (on 8/18) to resolve this matter, the EZ Pass agent directed me to the collection agency, Alliance One. She refused to discuss the matter, insisting that EZ Pass' violation date was correct. I contacted Alliance One and had to leave a voicemail. There was no agent to whom I could speak directly.
I have had problems with EZ Pass in the past. There were several times, particularly during the summer months, when payments I made were excessively delayed in being credited to my account. This resulted in a negative balance in my account. EZ Pass is not consumer-friendly and it is very apparent that it is poorly run. I would not argue a toll if I had not paid it.

I've been an EZ Pass account holder for a long time now and I have been very frustrated and unhappy with their services and company. I received a notice of enforcement from EZ Pass, which I didn't have a problem with because sometimes my husband would forget his EZ Pass tag, so I just filled it out and sent in a check. I sent two checks for $200 each, one for the violations and one to be put towards my account balance and they kept getting returned. I was very confused so I asked my daughter to log on to the EZ Pass website and see what the status was on our account. When she put all of our information in, we weren't able to access our account because it stated that our account has been sent to collections. I called EZ Pass and they told me I had to contact Alliance One, which was the collection agency and make a payment with them. I never received a letter nor a phone call from EZ Pass stating that my account was going to be sent to collection.
I contacted Alliance One and made a payment on 06/25/09. They advised me that I no longer have the EZ Pass account because it was sent to collections and after that happens, you're not allowed to open another account in the state of NJ. I was very upset because I never received a notice and when I was trying to mail in my payment, they just kept sending it back. The last payment that I had sent to them were the two checks for $200 each, which was on June 12, 2009. I called EZ Pass and asked them to return my checks since my account was closed and because I made a payment to the collection agency with my credit card. On 06/25/09, they told me, "No problem Mrs. **, we'll be happy to send those back for you."
I then noticed that they had withdrawn one of the checks for $200 on June 26, 2009 for EZ Pass. I called them right away and spoke to Traci, who told me that there was a mistake and that she was going to contact her supervisor and call me back with more information so they can send me my money back. I waited a few days and didn't receive anything for them so I took matters in my own hands and called on 7/13/09 at 3:50PM to see what was going on. They now told me that the $200 went to the violations I had on my account and that with the $200 check, the balance was now $0. I was a little frustrated with the way everything was being handled, but I said fine, as long as I have nothing else left to pay.
They kept sending me new violations and when I called to see what was going on, again they told me that I now had $600 worth of violations on my account left that weren't paid since January of 2009. I cannot believe this because I have sent them payment after payment and they were just sent back. Now all of a sudden, I had violations from almost 7 months ago which were not paid for? I did not want anything else to go to collections so I agreed to make payments on them little by little and that later on, I was going to have my lawyer look into the situation better. I made payments since then and I just made another one today, 08/15/09, for three violations which came out to $79.35 altogether. I made a payment with my credit card online and logged in to my online banking to check if the payment went through correctly, when I realized that EZ Pass had charged me $79.35 three times, which came out to $238.05.

On the 3-5-09 EZ Pass Statement, I was charged $126.00 for not returning 6 inactive transponders. These transponders were mailed to EZ Pass in March 2006. On 3-11-09, I spoke to Shahia and explained the problem. He said that he will issue a $126.00 credit in 7-10 business days. He gave me a case number. Then on 3-23-09, I spoke to Rosemary to escalate the issuance of the credit. And on 4-3-09, I filed a dispute with American Express (the card I use to replenish EZ Pass).
On 7-20-09, I left a phone message with both supervisors Maria and Andre. Also, I spoke to Mary. She would have someone contact me within 7-10 business days. She would escalate to Blue CUI. Then the next day, I lM for both supervisors Andre and Maria; and the following day, I spoke to Andre. He would check and call me back that afternoon.
On 7-23-09, I left message for Andre regarding not receiving a call. On 7-27-09, Maria called. I returned Maria's call and left a message. Then on 7-27-09, I IM for Andre and spoke to him. He was waiting for his manager to adjust the account that day. The next day, I left a message for Andre as well as on 7-29-09. And on 7-30-09 and 8-3-09, I again left messages for Andre. Finally, on 8-4-09, I left message for both Andre and Maria.

I have been a regular user of E-ZPass for the past decade and have always paid by credit card through automatic charges to my credit card. My tag was recently taken from me by an MTA police officer for having used it while having a 'negative balance' on my account. Apparently, my bank never received a request for payment from E-ZPass for the previous month's charge. E-ZPass recorded the transaction as 'declined payment', although my bank maintains that my credit card account has always been in good standing. E-ZPass nonetheless removed my card from their system and put me on a 'cash basis'. My balance went negative and the tag stopped working. I called to re-enter my credit card into the system and it seems that they had had the correct number already in their data base.
E-ZPass has charged a $25 'tag retention fee' as a result. I am essentially being charged $25 for a system error on their part. The 10th service representative that I spoke with explained that 'sometimes the bank does not receive our request for payment if they are downloading information to us at that time'. Apparently, that does not excuse me from having a negative balance.

I was traveling into New York City via the GW Bridge on June 9th at about 1:30 a.m. and there was no attendant to collect payments. I believe there was a sign that said you would be billed. I was billed $8 for the original toll amount and a $25 fee for not paying. This is crazy. It has to be a city sponsored scam because I see by reading on the internet that this has happened and continues to happen today despite the many complaints.

This is the second time I got a bill for toll violation. I pay the tolls sometimes twice. These machines are not kept up, and this time, it even said toll paid. They want to charge me a $25 fee, but it's not my fault. Next time, I will stay where I am and lean on the horn and stop traffic, until they come and fix the machine! I am always distressed by this. And then they send me a bill for $.50 cents toll plus $25 for an administration fee?

The money I am paying them is not going fully toward my account balance. I paid $50 June 1st and they want another $50 within ten days. I was about to pay because I did fall behind in the past. I suspected even back then but gave them the benefit of the doubt. I got my account and tag and pin numbers right and check my account, but they log me off for being on too long and I could not log back on. But I got within a few days of counting all the tolls and it is nowhere near the amount they charge.

I have an EZ Pass that was obtained in NJ. I usually use it on the Pennsylvania Turnpike.
I looked at my account online and found many instances of what was supposed to be a .75 or 3.50 toll being charged at 5.00. When I called my EZPass service center I received no satisfaction. The overcharges all occur when they pick up my leaving the turnpike, but dont record my getting on. I was overcharged for tolls related to 6/19/07, 5/22/07, 4/24/07 and twice on 3/25/07.
NJ wont replace my tag, because they say it is reading okay. They blame it on PA.
The PA service center is never open in the evening or on weekends, so they are difficult to contact if you work 9-5. Your service center is not open in the evenings or weekends and they dont accept email. Leaving consumers to take time off work to make a phone call or use snail mail (incurring postage and taking forever to have the problem addressed).
What incentive does anyone have to read the tag correctly? They make more money when they dont read the tag. I have an idea, how about if their equipment is faulty, they check the picture of my license plate that is taken when I go through the entry booth.
They create the problem with faulty equipment and solve the problem by overcharging me rather than take the time to look up the information. I have an idea, how about they dont get any toll when they are too lazy to look up where I got on, that way they have an incentive to fix the problem.

There is nothing worse than having a regular deduction come out of your checking account for E-ZPASS and then get 18 pictures of the rear of your car all in one days mail. Apparently the transponder died but even though I had an account and even though my husband got on the phone the next day and filed all of the paperwork he was advised to file and then I followed up and became an E-ZPASS Pen Pal writing and faxing over and over from the violation time last summer to date nothing has been finalized. No money refunded.
I feel that because this is a State Run Government Agency that they believe they are above handling things in any kind of correct, business like or timely or responsive manner. My husband and I have exhausted ourselves with communications both by e-mail and by phone to attempt to resolve this.
The issues goes back to the summer of 2003 and no matter how much we communicate, PA E-ZPASS has kept the overcharges. If this has happened to me then it has happened to others and the volume in dollars that PA E-ZPASS has kept that does not belong to them has to be outrageous. I have all of my communications and statements to back up my issue.

Letter sent on 12/7/03
SUBJECT: VIOLATION # T200309135053, T200309154730-01
I am writing this letter in hopes that you can resolve my issues. I have received two (2) notices, in regards to Toll Violations. These violations stated that a toll of thirty-five (35) cents was not paid, when my wife went through the tools.
I was stunned and appalled to receive such a notice, because I assure you, neither that nor my wife or I would ever not pay a toll. I spoke to my wife and asked if she had used her EZ Pass or paid? She stated that she paid on all occasions, and never went through a toll without paying. Just for the record, I can tell you that, I myself have paid the toll, and got a message to PAY TOLL, which I again paid, and still not message stating that the toll was paid.
I find that your toll machines at times, do not register the payment, and we are left to pay again, and then we receive a notice asking for an administrative fee ($25.00), as well as the 35-cent toll. This is quite disturbing to myself, and all the other customer who fall at the mercy of your toll machines.
At this time, I ask that you remove my name off the violation list, waive any fees that I feel and know are without just, and solely charge me for the toll (35 cents) AGAIN!
We are law-abiding citizens, who work hard for all we have, and to be charge a fee for an error that YOUR machine made is just not right or fair.
We are currently utilizing the EZ pass on all trips, and hope that this will eliminate any errors on your part, for we will never evade any tolls that is due.
Before, I escalate this to another level, I plea for you cooperation and assistance to resolve this matter.

Therefore, I can't solve my problem or get my money back. The EZ-pass of New York had me waiting 5 months in order to tell me that they never cashed the check.
