Been with the company for 2 years and was locked into a decent rate. We were signed up for automatic refill so we wouldn't run out of propane. In the first 2 years we ran out of propane twice and had to wait days to get propane for heat and hot water. Apparently, our new customer contract ran up and we were never offered a new contract. Without knowing, we recently got a $1000 bill for 272 gallons at "$3.11"/gallon... Math doesn't add up to me either. When I confronted them about it, she said she'd seen the market price over $3 when it was really cold "like -10 degrees." That would make sense if it wasn't 40 degrees. Angry, I shopped around and the other local companies literally laughed that I got charged that much in our area.
AmeriGas, at a minimum, was at least $1 more expensive per gallon than any other local propane company. They were unwilling to work with me and did not offer any compensation for not holding their end of the contract. Even after waiting a week to get ahold of a supervisor, the only option I had was to sign a new contract to save $100 on the single tank, not worth it. To treat existing customers that way should be a crime. They literally waited til the "market price" was the "highest" in local history to fill our tank. Funny how every other local companies market price is at between 75 cents and a dollar cheaper... Especially makes no sense when the weather is 40 degrees.

We have been using AmeriGas for less than a year. In the last two months they have delivered propane twice without contacting us. After realizing they had 'somehow' set us up on automatic deliveries, I called to cancel. However, 2 weeks later they still delivered, without letting us know beforehand. We now owe ~$1,000 in just propane that we didn't ask for and they are not willing to increase the payment plan beyond 4 months or cover part of the cost since it was an error on their part. I will never recommend AmeriGas to friends or family.

They charge double the market price, put loopholes in their contract to hold customers hostage, never call back when you call to complain. Charge extravagant 'late fees' when you can't resolve problems due to their inattention. Bad business, bad service, bad will. Never again, even under their new management.

Updated on 12/12/2018: I called & told them to cancel my account & pick up their equipment. The person on the phone was a bit nasty & gave some cockamamie excuse for the charge. She said she would put in a ticket for pick-up. A few days later we got a call from a supervisor who said he wanted to make things right. My wife told him we put in our own tanks to please pick these up. He said ok that will be no problem. No one had showed up to pick up the tanks.
My wife called back & wanted to know when they were picking them up because now it's a dangerous situation. The person on the phone (not sure if the same one as the 1st time) told her there will be an $80 charge on top of $130. My wife said, “They are your tanks”! The person on the phone said, “That is our policy.” My wife informed her that we will be charging them for tank storage. Still waiting for them to be picked up. These people are thieves & have fraudulent business practices.
Original Review: For 32 years I have used Cress Gas. Recently I received a bill from AmeriGas for $130.38. AmeriGas had purchased Cress & is now charging tank rental for the past year. I called customer service & I told them I never received a bill for tank rental before. I was told that because it was part of the price of the propane. The person then informed me she can reduce my bill to $75. If I had purchased propane in the past year & it was included in the price why am I being charged again. This is fraud & they are charging twice. This is what happens when you’re a loyal customer & a bigger company takes over.

In Oct. I called Amerigas to get my meter turned on. I said, "There is no hurry, when will the tech be in my area?" The tech was in the office. They gave me a day. He DID NOT make a special trip just for me. The tech seemed very professional and courteous. He turned on the meter, did a test, and lit my wall heater pilot (He found a loose wire/plugged it back on). He was here about 30 minutes. Then, I get a bill; "Service Dispatch Charge"= $60+, and "Safety Assurance Check"= $99. $163.34 Total / 30 min. = $326.68 per hour. I talked to a manager. He said, "We do charge $120/Hr. for service". I argued, "but that's $326/Hr." He never disputed the 30 min. the tech was here. He said a lot of BLAH-BLAH-BLAH. None of which disproved the fact; THAT'S $326+/ Hour! Is that LEGAL?

First time ordering gas after running out due to a faulty gauge on tank. They charged me 128.00 for leak test because it had run out, I argued I ran out because of faulty gauge, she then told me if the gauge was faulty I would be refunded. Gas was delivered 4 days later late evening. Driver confirmed faulty gauge and put in order to be replaced. While he was here he made sure the furnace and stove were working then went to light the hot water heater. He didn't know what he was doing and a gas pocket (his words) exploded while he was trying to light it. While he was here he called one of the techs to ask him what to do, he walked him thru it and was still not able to light the water heater. He then proceeds to tell me he will submit a ticket the next morning and a tech would be out to light and make sure there was no damage from the explosion.
When I didn't hear from them the next morning I called, she proceeds to tell me that a tech would be out to replace the faulty gauge, (after checking with the driver who confirmed it was faulty) but I would be responsible for lighting the water heater. She said they are not responsible for faulty equipment but will charge me for the leak check and not check the water to make sure there was no damage, and now after 5 days no hot water and I want know if the water heater was not damaged until I pay someone to check it out. Even more time without hot water. Run as fast as you can from this company. They are rude, and liars. They will tell you anything to get you off the line.

AmeriGas company and employees have no respect for elderly neighbor near the propane refill facility, when asked why they cut my fence, cut my trees, dug up my property and installed electric lines underground, without contacting me or asking permission. The power company advised AmeriGas they will not come onto my property to attach power to a line without my permission. Now they play very loud music day and night, in retaliation to no permission to run lines across or underground of my property. We’re senior citizens and they honk their horns and play loud music as well as cursing and yelling while we work in our yard. Hey.

My Mama pass away, so I call them to tell them can I change the gas in my name, which they did, that was in 2014, 2016 I asked could I buy this tank, and they say yes. I asked how much, they say $600+ dollars. I had a gas bill coming up, so I asked could I send them both gas bill and the tank I brought at the same time, yes they say, told me how much, and when the bill came I sent both tank and the gas bill at same time $907.35. 2017 no rental fee was send to me, why because I brought a tank from you. Come 2018 here come rental for tank, I call and told them I brought this tank. They say they didn't have record showing I brought this tank. I say I call and asked and they say yes I can buy this tank, and I told them send me a receipt for this, which they never did.
First they say they never received a check from me for $907.35, I went to the bank and got statement showing that they did receive a check, and I went to Madison to show them, then they say now they see it, but they liked, she came and showed me a statement they had, like they just made it up, because when I look at theirs it was all wrong, and I told her that, she just made up something. I had my statement, and my bank statement, and ours was the same, it is so hard for me to think people will cheat so easily. AmeriGas I don't know what to say, but reimburse my money, for the tank I brought. If you reimburse my money, for tank, I will pay rental fee, but I won't stay with you, because I don't trust you. I don't cheat people's, I expect the same from company that should Love people's business, not cheat them. Rating should be 0, not a one. Change your ratings, let people's have a choice 0. I called around to get retail delivered prices for propane. I was told $1.89/gal. Of course there is a tank-set charge and a contract; I get that. The contract also contains a hefty tank retrieval requirement for ending the contract. One year later, the cost is now up to $3.63/gal. During that time they delivered residential price for propane has not changed significantly (USEIA). Amerigas propane is sold in my community at independent retail locations for $1.85/gal. - roughly the cost that was represented by the company when they wanted my business. They doubled the cost when they got the contract termination clause in place.

Please do NOT buy propane through this company! They were clueless about what was going on, it took us months to get our account set up properly, they let our "auto-fill" tank run dry TWICE and then acted as though it was not an emergency for them to come and fill our tank. Multiple mistakes in billing, customer service is rude and unhelpful. They were over a year late charging us for things... the list goes on. We have cancelled our service and it took them three months to come pick up their tank and I am currently having to argue paying "late fees" they charged ME during that time! Such a constant frustration.

When I purchased my home in 2008, I was told by the prior owner that I/we owned the propane tank buried in my walled-in landscape bed in front of the property. I contracted w/ AmeriGas to provide propane for almost 9 years but, after successively higher propane costs ($400/month for 8 mos out of the year), I finally switched my home to Natural Gas for heating/cooking. I informed AmeriGas of this and we were fine for about 12 months. A few months ago, they sent me an invoice for a $31 and then, a $210 charge for a 'tank rental fee". I called AmeriGas, told them that I believe that I own the tank and to send me proof that they owned the tank. The girl said she'd 'get back with me' and never has. NOW, they are hitting me with Collection calls, looking for their $241...which I absolutely refuse to pay. Unbelievably greedy, monopolistic behavior that I intend to fight purely on principle.

My first experience was they charged me $4.73/gal for propane March 2018. Typical cost for propane in the area at the time $2.63 - $2.89. Their reason was they didn't have a signed contract. Should have taken the contract to my lawyer because 6 months later they charged me at $50 fee for checking the line for a leak. You installed the stuff and you are charging me a fee to check your lines? Jump forward to Oct 2018. Found out there is a great company who has excellent customer service reviews and don't slam you with fees every time they service you so called for a disconnect. They want $149.99 PLUS $59.99 PLUS .35 per gallon back charge to pump the fuel out of the tank. Are you kidding me?
I cannot wait to get their tank out of my yard and out of my life. If you have any options other than going to AmeriGas use them. You will regret it from start to finish dealing with their charge after charge after charge nonsense. I did not see these reviews before I contracted with them. Wish I had. And if you do sign with them hire a lawyer to negotiate their BS charges.

I literally got charged for him doing NOTHING. Go to Rio Grande Propane or Kit Carson.
My Taos office won't make this charge go away so maybe posting on EVERY single online option such as Google maps, Yelp, FB and more about how I got charged and still am 90 bucks on my account when Chris came here and did NOTHING on my property nor did he tell me or my plumber things we didn't already know, maybe at least telling the world might help... and if not, at least people get the hard truth about your company.
I just spent MONTHS in the hospital and I did ALL I was asked to get brought up to code even though I've been filled for 7 years and then they tell me it will be a month to trade out my tank and fill on top of charging me when Chris came out and DID NOTHING... when that Taos office KNEW I was having major surgery and KNEW I had no heat when this runs out... or a way to cook and that I was scurrying to get up to code in between major surgeries in CA I have been having. I HAVE NO HEAT and have a catheter in my gut and a major bladder surgery I just underwent... I also can't afford 90 bucks when NOTHING was done. Energy North was purchased by Amerigas. They sent out a very vague postcard with no details, just there would be changes. Everyone's budget plan was canceled and my rates rose from already excessive $2.88 per gallon to $3.49 per gallon. I went through a lot of effort to change providers. Currently, I pay 2.19/gal with Haffners. I didn't think there would be an issue after I called and closed my account 1 year ago. Suddenly there is a $154 fee on my credit card. Previously I set up auto bill pay and because I didn't shut it off, it generated the bill.
The representative acknowledged that I should not have had a fee and told me to stop the auto pay online, which I did. Since the new provider started when ground was frozen they had to put in temporary above ground tanks. I still have quite a bit of fuel in the temporary tanks so Haffners has not been able to put in a new tank as of yet till tank levels drop. AMERIGAS representative said they would not credit me the $154 until I call and tell them the tank is ready to pick up even though they had just admitted the charge was an error. They claimed it is a "rental fee" though I have never been charged a rental fee, nor been sent a rental fee bill.

First time customers looking for a single fill-up. Unfortunately they never followed through... Someone came and inspected and said a regulator needed moved and it would be under $20 (it’s been there for 20-years through multiple companies/inspections), fine. Nobody called nor scheduled and the truck showed a couple days later and turned around and left. Looking at the gauge on the tank, no propane was delivered… Nobody called/no note left.
Upon contacting AmeriGas we found out it was ‘in the notes to call’ but AmeriGas admitted nobody called to inform us. It was deemed that they could not safely deliver 365-days a year. Our driveway is ¼-mile+ long and steep, we get that, it can be a pain in the winter, trust me. But this was not winter and they came and inspected, and then sent a truck to fill the tank, and that truck came all the way to the tank, but did not fill it... We were not asking for year-round delivery, no contract, they were already at the tank, but deemed they could not safely do so in the winter, so left… We have had other companies deliver with some snow on the ground, no issues. We were not asking for a commitment. They made it almost to the end, but fell short – right there at the finish line.

For several years, Amerigas has overcharged customers of the propane business in Northern California. In February of 2018, after several overcharges and requests for adjustments, the company tried to overcharge me by $1.85 per gallon above the going retail price. I contacted the local office and demanded an adjustment. They adjusted the price down by $1.00. I sent and called the office giving notice to the company that their services were terminated. My notice to them was dated 5/6/18. Further, I wanted credit for the amount I paid them for the propane minus the amount I used. They were only willing to discount the recovery to a price below a figure that was close to wholesale.
I hired a new company and they took the tank to their facility, performed the recovery and put the gas into the new tank, delivered and installed it, and notified Amerigas of the tank location. In fact, there have been several tanks awaiting pickup by Amerigas. On 6/30/18 Amerigas sends me a bill for tank rental. I told them again that they had been fired and where they could go to pick up the tank. They then sent a "customer Services" rep to our home to survey as to how to retrieve the tank. Told him the same thing. They then sent the local delivery guy out to refill the tank. Told him the same thing. Finally, someone from their billing department called on the phone and threatened me if I didn't pay the bill for tank rental. I was not speechless.
Overall, there is nothing wrong with the propane sold by Amerigas. It performs as intended. What is wrong with Amerigas is its foul tactics, lack of customer service (they think they can just deliver and bill you and you won't notice the obscene gas pricing) and their threatening manner when trying to collect what is not due them. What they are now facing is a growing number of customers who are talking about them at the local hardware store, the post office, the supermarkets and Costco/Sam's Clubs. We are beginning to see that if we organize against them, especially the local office, we can give locally owned and operated companies our business, get competitive pricing and quality service.

I had my first experience with a bad AmeriGas tank and (Jewel) the merchant where I purchased the tank, freely exchanged it with another no questions asked. I learned that there are newer tanks that can be distinguished from the older ones by their shape. The newer tanks are a few mm shorter than the older ones and have a rounder shape. There is also no rust on them and the paint can easily be identified as the original coat. There is also an expiration date stamped on the tank, e.g. (01/17). It is near the top the tank. Probably not a good idea to accept a tank with an expiration date stamped on it.

We were just happy that it was going to be over, FINALLY. WRONG, Happy Thanksgiving, we are going to see if you notice we increased your bill again.
Excuse after excuse but this time I refused to pay the overcharged bills and only paid the max as to what we should be charged. My father has a vacation home in MI, where he uses AmeriGas. We have been with them for years without issue. Now, all of the sudden, they are charging us a rental fee of almost $150 for NOT USING GAS THAT WE ALREADY PAID FOR. When we contacted them about it, they told us we signed Terms & Conditions agreeing to this fee. Upon reviewing the Terms & Conditions, we found no indication of what the fee would be, so they can essentially change the fee to whatever they want anytime they want. We feel that the Terms & Conditions should be clear & transparent & should indicated EXACTLY what we will be charged. At the very least it should indicate that the fee will be no more than $X.XX, so the customer is aware of all the fees going in.
We spend between $500-$700 annually on propane from AmeriGas, yet they want to charge us for something we already paid for, because we didn't use as much as they wanted us to. We already explained that this is a vacation home, so we will never use that much. Furthermore, we have never used that much & were never charged before. They could not explain why that was, nor could they explain how they come up with the amount of this fee. So we essentially never know what they will charge us. We have contacted the BBB & the case was closed, with a note that we are still not satisfied. However, we feel that their practices/Terms & Conditions are unfair to customers (especially loyal customers who have been with them for years).
They are essentially withholding info/lying/misleading customers. And they refuse to take responsibility for it. How can this be legal? And if you want to cancel or change to a smaller tank to avoid this tank rental fee, they want to charge you as well. This is unacceptable & we feel they should be forced to edit their Terms & Conditions to list all fees, including the amount, so that customers know what they are getting into. We also strongly feel that a business should not be charging customers fees for not using something for which they already paid. It is amazing that they have been allowed to conduct business in this manner for this long.

AmeriGas is not dependable. I was low on gas and called the company. I was told that I would have a delivery soon. I was lower and called again and was told by Vicki not to worry they would not let me run out. I called the next day and AmeriGas stopped answering the phones. They would not answer the emergency number either. I was lucky and got another company to rush out with two tanks. When I signed up with AmeriGas I told them to put me on auto fill. I soon found out what "AUTO FILL" meant. The company goes on something they call "degree heating days". This is a temperature that is picked and below that temperature, you are using heat. This is the problem with this, the company has no Idea what they are talking about and this is why so many people run out of gas.
I called the company once and ask about the degree heating days. I ask them how they knew how much gas I would use and they gave me the degree heating days crap. I ask them how many buildings I heated now, they said that they did not know. I asked them what the Thermal Resistance or "R" value of the buildings were. Had no idea what I was talking about. I asked how they could determine how much gas I was using without the figures to back it up. All I was told that they go on degree heating days. I would love for AmeriGas to get their best genius to give an answer as to how AmeriGas can figure your consumption without the mentioned figures. So, look out if you are on autofill because you will get shafted sooner or later with a big emergency fill bill. I will also add that there are other factors to add to calculating your usage.

They would say they were going to get a discount amount and call me back. Never receive a call. Called to have the tank picked up, asked if there were any fees. No, no fees. Took them over two months to pick our tank up. Then a month later, I receive an envelope from them. Thinking it was junk mail, because we had been with another company now for almost three months. Receive a second letter, open it, it is a statement saying we owe over $100 (now late fees of $38 p/m are being tacked on).
I call them, explain that I was told there was no pick up fee, could they send me a copy of the contract we signed showing there was a fee. She agrees to send to me and call me back to let me know it has been sent. Receive nothing that day. Call the following day, she tells me she is not at the office where my contract is located until the following week. I follow up the following week with her, she says she will send the contract and follow up with a phone call. Never receive anything. Get a call from a call center representative last week, explain to her the history. She tells me that she will note my account that if we call in and pay the initial pick up fee they will wave the late fees. Today, I call in to pay the bill, I get the very first girl I spoke with, who never followed up. Of course she's going to say there are no notes from this other agent.
I paid the bill including the late fees. After paying the bill I requested the number for the corporate office. I wanted to get to the bottom of why the notes were not put on my account as promised last week. The customer service number (800 number) told me there WERE notes on the account but that the name had been changed when this girl pulled it up today. WTH?? Then wouldn't say anymore, said I needed to talk to the District Manager in my area. This is a very shady, unprofessional company. They are all about the money grab and nothing about service. THEIR HOLD MESSAGE SAYS: "CUSTOMER SERVICE & SAFETY ARE OUR #1 PRIORITY". THIS IS ABSOLUTELY LAUGHABLE.

They are just horrible in regards to reliability. We have "automatic" delivery which is never automatic. Frequently end up running out of gas (and we aren't using up at a high rate. They just don't come) so end up calling for emergency delivery when we realize that we have run out and then they charge additional fees even though we have paid up on time and should have received our delivery earlier. They know they have you over a barrel because technically they own the tank even if it is buried on your property. Well today we have had it and are going to pay to have this tank dug up and a new one installed from a more reliable company. If I ever move, I will not even consider buying a house with AmeriGas as the contract even if it is my dream house. They are that bad.

I have been a propane consumer for over 30 years and cannot believe the outrageous pricing, rude and unreliable service and total disregard for customer service and satisfaction of Amerigas. Unfortunately for me the family run energy supplier in my area was bought by Amerigas. Immediately I was charged $258.00 rent on the company owned tank because I did not meet the minimum gas usage. When I asked to purchase the 30 year old tank so I would not have to rent I was told the tank would have to be replaced and I would be required to purchase a new tank due to safety reasons??? If I continue to rent the tank there is no issue for Amerigas to continue to use it.
I inquired about having the tank removed. I was informed that I cannot receive any type of credit for propane left but will have to pay an exorbitant price to have propane disposed of as hazardous waste. On top of the tank rental charges I do not meet the minimum propane usage so my average cost per gallon $4.85 per gallon. (I have propane service at another home and pay $2.75 at peak times). TO ANYONE READING THIS LOOK ANYWHERE BUT AMERIGAS FOR YOUR PROPANE SERVICE. I can't empty my tank fast enough to change service.

Called for a delivery when our tank was between 30 and 35%. They said it would be 7-10 days and on their website, our delivery was slated for between the 1st and 9th of March (we called on the 1st). It is now the 15th and we still have not received a delivery. Called them yesterday to see what was going on and they said we weren't on the delivery schedule and that it would be another 7-12 days before we got gas (we're now at less than 5% gas). I live with my mom, who is 75 and not in the best health, and it is our cold, rainy season. But we can't use the heat because we were afraid of running out of propane. We went with another company in Oct. 2017. (G&B) G&B faxed AmeriGas and we called them to let them know that we were changing companies. They sent us a bill for a $50 rental fee, which we did not pay, of course. Then every month they would send us another bill with a late fee on it. Then they sent us to collections for not paying. Meanwhile, we called them every month to tell them we no longer have service with them and EVERY single time we called, they said "they didn't know we wanted to close the account"! We even went in there in Feb and called.
So, I finally sent a copy of G&B's fax, plus a letter telling them that we do not owe them anything and to come and pick up their tank or I would contact Hazmat. I sent this to the local AmeriGas (Mt. Airy) and to their company in Pa. and to the collection agency. They came and picked up the tank and I haven't received any more bills for that. Now they are sending us a $60 bill for picking up the tank! We will never use them again. They are very dishonest. I have been told that there are tanks all over the place that they refuse to pick up. I would not recommend them to anyone.

Then almost did it again 30 days later, but I talked to the guy at my house and he politely drove away. So then we moved, with 50% full mark on the gauge, 500 gallon tank was removed from the site for the new owner to go with a different company. The local AmeriGas rep, said this was no problem and would send a check or a bill to settle the account.
The check came, a whopping $165 I say facetiously. They said they took out the fees and such and that was the balance. They did not send a closing statement to show the breakdown of what was left in the tank, the fees they took out, and how they arrived at the total. What can I even dispute without proof? I was expecting a fair rate for the gas not used. Over the past year, we feel duped, since we just noticed they were charging us double the going rate a year earlier, $4.50/gal and gave us a break once we brought it to their attention. This is my third winter living in an insulated apartment that is less than 900 sq ft. I just received a bill for a propane delivery that was almost $700 @ $4.27/gaI. I only use it for heat. I keep my thermostat at 60 degrees for a good 75% of the time. Prior to the most recent bill, I got a bill November or December and they charged me $4.59 a gallon. Fortunately it was a relatively small refill. At this time last year, I paid $2.69/gal in January and $1.96 in February. I hadn't locked in the last two winters because the bill was manageable. I am furious.
I called the manager who finally offered me a $25 voucher. Are you kidding me? I explained that I live alone in a small place and could not possibly pay the bill. "We can put you on a payment program," he said. I'm a nurse and like everyone else, I work hard for my money. I get it... Businesses have the right to make money... But to GOUGE the consumer, is totally unethical and immoral. They simply do not care. They will pick up the tanks for $59.99 and charge a .35 "restocking fee." First of all, I've never had to use this propane crap before because I've always lived in a house with central air. Since moving to this small town where everything is PRIMITIVE, the worst part of it all is getting gas from AmeriGas! I spent almost $400 on 100 gallons of gas 2 weeks ago and never imagined it would run out already! I ordered 200 gallons on Monday and today (Wednesday) I called to see if the truck is coming to our area today and they said it wasn't coming til next week!.So we have NO HEAT all this time when it's in the 20's out!
The problem with this propane business, besides the fact that they're a rip off is that, they got you by the balls because you're at their mercy. There is no sense of urgency, especially to the people who have no heat!!! There is ONE person named Nancy in the Emporia, Va. office that went above and beyond for me before but she is not assigned to my region. Bought a poor condition AmeriGas five gallon LP tank from the machine in front of Sam's Club on Dale Mabry north Tampa. I had never used an exchange program and now I know why, at least from AmeriGas. I was not about to trade in my new premium grade tank so I bought their tank with gas included. You cannot see the tank you get, otherwise I would have passed. The tank was greasy and filthy, which is only a nuisance and probably typical of their outfit. The tank however had prominent rust around the weld area where the valve entered the tank. I would consider this a safety problem. The fill port was fouled and filthy. Fortunately I noticed it and cleaned it. So while I was at it, I washed the tank, which caused me to look at the bottom where there was heavy rust on the tank bottom inside the circular stand.
Forty years ago, I owned a business with a major propane tank to supply our own equipment, but also sometimes sold to the public. I would have refused to refill this tank due to the safety/rust issue. As an additional thought, the type of scum who brought in tanks that looked like this were obvious lowlifes who might well have been featured on an episode of "Cops." I can only speculate what AmeriGas ownership and management would look like in person. The machine refused to give a credit card receipt.

I purchased a spec house where the builder had installed an Amerigas 500 gallon in ground propane tank. To get it filled I had to agree to the Terms and Conditions of the contract the builder had signed. The builder agreed to those terms so he would not have to pay any money for the tank, leaving me on the hook to "rent" the tank from Amerigas. The first year I went in and signed the paperwork and everything went relatively smooth, they filled it regularly and the billing was accurate.
As soon as the one year renewal came around I noticed my rate had gone up 100% year to year. I called and asked what was going on and basically they said since I had not called and "locked in" for the year I was getting market pricing. It's very easy to look up the wholesale and delivered propane average cost on the government's website. They were charging me double what they should. After arguing I got it lowered to about 25% more than I should have been paying but let it go. I use 1000-1500 gallons per year so pricing is very important.
Each year the same thing would happen, they would double my bill, I would threaten to leave and pull the tank out of the ground, etc. etc. etc. It became a huge aggravation and they kept giving me worse and worse pricing. I would call around and tell people I owned my tank and would get quoted a price 60% below what Amerigas wanted. Finally I had enough and decided I was done after 11 years. I called Amerigas and offered to buy the tank from them (a 14 year old tank by this point as the house was empty for 3 years). They would not sell it to me which is just dumb as they would have to refurbish it to reuse it.
For reference the wholesale gas price I would find to be about $1 per gallon most of the time for the US average in my area. The delivered average price was $1.90 to $2.50 per gallon. Every year they would try and jack me up to $4.50 or even $5.00 per gallon. I would buy 300-400 gallons at a time so they were trying to profit roughly $900 of one fill up on me. I get they need to recoup tank rental fees but charge me 10 cent extra per gallon, not $2.75
When Amerigas would not sell the tank to me and I had enough I called another local company. For $150 they agreed to dig up the Amerigas tank and install one of their own. In their contract it says if I am ever unhappy I can buy the tank for $1500. That was the best decision I have ever made. For 2 years now my cost per gallon has been around $1.90 and I don't have to play the complain/threaten to quit game every year to get a price that even after adjust was still way too high. There are 60 houses in my neighborhood and all were originally on Amerigas. At least 20 of us have dug them up and replaced them and that is absolutely been the best decision I could have made. I would not in no way, shape or form EVER recommend someone signing up for a in ground Amerigas tank, it is against the law for someone else to refill their tank so they hold all the cards and leverage. They will take advantage of that leverage and continue to raise the pricing.

AmeriGas in Spartanburg, SC never knew or ever exhibited the truth. These are a fine-tuned group of scam artists designed to hook you with the notion of low pricing only to find other charges to ramp the price back up. I had to call them every year and threaten to leave in order to get "contract" pricing. This year I had enough. I disconnected their tank in Aug 2017, and told them to come get it. At the time, it had 40% in the tank. Then, in the first part of Dec 2017, they sent me a bill for a full tank fill-up at gouging pricing. The problem was the tank was disconnected, and it is against the law in the state of SC to fill a disconnected tank. They billed me $420 and expected me to pay it. When I went outside to check, the tank was still 40% filled.
I reported this to a regional office, and they told me the manager of the Spartanburg office would be giving me a call. Did I hear something... Absolutely not. Came home from work and the sneaks had come and got their tank. Then, I received a settlement a week later and they screwed me out of my 40%. Claimed they had what is called a "pump out restocking charge of $149" so there went my refund. I am obtaining a lawyer and have contacted the local TV station to air my story. (The local owner said they were gaining many dissatisfied AmeriGas customers.) When we received a bill for over $200 for 1 year tank rent (which we had never had been charged before), that was it. We called to have the rent charge removed, discontinue service and to have the tank picked up. We told them at that time we refused to pay any pickup charge. There are stipulations that AmeriGas must honor, to honor the contract. They must call and contact me first before they come up. Well they did call and left a message (shortly before the installer arrived, thus not providing me with a chance to call and reschedule). They apologized for the "short" notice, but they also said that I could call in to reschedule for another time. Well, I was out when they called and the "Ninja" driver quickly hooked up and filled my tank and left me with a 600 + dollar bill.
The kicker here is that we still had half the capacity (30%) of the last refill (60%) which AmeriGas left us with back in March. I would've told them to refill it back up to 60%. Instead, they filled it to 80%. Now I question AmeriGas timing for a refill. Since the cost of propane changes on a weekly basis, what prevents them from choosing a time which best fills their coffers with my coin?? This is the Yelp review I just posted for them: "I'm sorry, Elisha, you're nice enough on the phone, but I talked to you in late August. I told you we were moving out by Sept. 1 and to have the service discontinued by then. I told you we had Suburban Propane at the new house, and that we could not carry-over the account. We talked to you yesterday about this, and today the bill arrives, like (black) magic. And you told us (for some reason) it would take 2 weeks to rectify this. This is completely unacceptable and your mistake, Elisha/Yreka Amerigas.
I expect you to expedite cleaning up this error, and I want proof that you have zeroed-out our former account immediately. Also, get your phones fixed. At first I thought the small mistakes that kept happening were nothing and easily fixed, but looking back I realize it was just showing me how completely incompetent they are. 1st delivery - I was told that I don't qualify as a charge account, (no problem I wouldn't expect to), I was told when the driver arrived to give him my check. Come delivery day and I go to hand the driver my check and I'm told I'm a charge account and that I have to mail it. Again no biggie I can easily do that. A few days later I receive a call saying I didn't pay, and unless I do so right now they're shutting off my gas. I figured it was a simple misunderstanding and paid over the phone.
2nd delivery- Everything goes fine, payment is made beforehand and driver leaves without incident. A few days later I receive a message that I overpaid and am sent a check for $40. Sweet! I love getting money back I didn't expect. 3rd delivery - I call to make arrangements for delivery but am told I owe $29! I ask how that's possible when I was just mailed a check for $40? They said they weren't sure and would call me back. A few hours later they call back and say they'll "waive the fee". Again I figured it was a simple mistake and seeing as they resolved it not a problem.
4th delivery- I call to schedule and after giving them my full name and address I'm asked if I meant "John ** at 123 Main St"? "No. I mean the name and address I gave you which isn't even close to the one you just asked about." I was then told "Oh well that's why it showed you owed the $29 last time, he owed it so it showed on your account"??? Ok now I'm starting to get irritated but brush it off. So delivery comes and when I check it I see they delivered 20 extra gallons? I don't expect this to be free but again clearly an oversight on their part. I didn't have the money at the time to pay (seeing as I budgeted and paid for what I ordered) and would pay it the next time I ordered.
Now I've moved. The tank still has 70 gallons it, 20 of which I understand I didn't pay for so I do not expect a refund. However 50 I did pay for and expect a full refund for, except I'm told since I owe them for the 20 gallons it washes with the 50??? I will be filing a complaint with the BBB but don't want anyone else to experience what I've had to deal with.

We have been in our new home for about 2 weeks. We contacted Amerigas and then advised that they were going to do a soft credit check. When the credit check came back, (mind you my husband and I have FICO scores well over 820), they stated that we didn't have enough credit in the area. Well duh, we just moved in 2 weeks ago. They then told us that every month we would have to pay them upfront for propane service.
This is after going back and forth with them for about 10 days. We pay with cash 99% of the time and if we use credit cards, etc. we pay them off when the bill is here (we are fortunate enough to do this) but apparently that doesn't count. We went with another company and will NEVER DO BUSINESS with Amerigas EVER! Their credit check portion of their company apparently does not know what they are doing. With a FICO score over 820, we should be able to get whatever we want as far as financing so this company is just being DUMBER THAN A BOX OF ROCKS!

We rented a tank from this company for a rental property we own, and have been using it for years, with numerous refills. We recently became aware that their rates for propane are WAY higher than other companies in the area, so we switched out the tank to go with a much more competitive rate. They now want $146 to remove their tank, stating we have not met their initial period (which is three years). We have had the tank for at least EIGHT years. This company is a total rip-off!

The WORST company... It seems PRICE GOUGING is a normal way of doing business for these CROOKS. We had their "service" in Chester, Calif. a couple of years ago when they upped the price from 2.50 gal to 5.61!!! So I called in to complain and they immediately dropped the price to like 3.50 or so. I told them they were history and got another HONEST company. No more problems.
Today I went to my local gas station here in Felton, Calif and was informed of a price increase in propane. I jokingly asked the owner if they were supplied by AMERIcrap and lo and behold... The price Amerigas was charging them was over 6.50 per gallon. I then went down the street and got it for 3.25 at a Valero. My advice to anyone who has Amerigas is to RUN to another company, NOW... The game they are playing is to my mind one that is relying on people not wanting to go through all the hassle of changing tanks and service. A smart tack, yes, if we let them get away with it.

They are charging $5.459 a gallon: around the country it is much less than that. The answer from the office is that it is priced at the head office and as we use less than 100 gallons in a year, it is more. They had charged like this last year and when I complained they reduced it. This is not the way to do business. As there are less competition in this area, looks like they can price whatever they want. They also charge a $95 per year to lease the tank. And a will call fee of $6.99. Frustrating to deal with these concerns.

I have been with AmeriGas for three years. The first year my propane was $1.29 a gallon about the average rate back then. Last year it skyrocketed to $2.10 a gallon and I paid that for the first six months before my mother in law had mentioned that she called and they lowered hers, when I called they lowered it to $1.69 a gallon that was the best they could do she said. I checked around and the average was $1.19 a gallon. Yesterday I received a letter from them explaining the terms for this year. A $99 administrative fee and the price was $2.29 a gallon. I once again called the local competitors and $1.29 is the rate everyone else is at.
I called Amerigas and asked why they were price gouging a dollar more than everyone else. The response I got was the best they could do is $1.90 a gallon. She told me they are a corporation with a much larger service area and more trucks, deliveries, and safety measures that is the reason they charge so much. I then asked how much they would give me for the 75% in the tank if I wanted to switch companies. They told me they don't give back credit for pumped out propane and would charge me $190.00 to pump it out if it had more than 5% in it and a $60 pick up fee to get the tank. I then requested my $745.00 credit to be refunded and to cancel Our Contract and since only my Furnace is Propane I will be sure to call them in January or February during a snow storm when I finally get to 5% to come get their tank.

We are being charged $4.439 per gallon of propane on our latest invoice for 06/10/2017 - the national average at this time was $2.20 - and the AmeriGas website shows their pricing at $1.54 with a special for new customers - $.50 off per gallon. This just seems ridiculous and very dishonest of AmeriGas not to be charging the same rate to all their loyal customers.

Over the past few years, the price has gone up and up. That was expected during the time when gas prices were at their highest. A couple of years ago after replacing windows and other weatherization upgrades, my usage went below a 1200 Gallon usage minimum to get on the price guarantee program. This past Feb they filled my tank which had 40% left in it. I am out of work and ran out to stop the person but he had already added 35% into the thank for a total of 75% in the tank. When I received the bill the price was $4.17 per gallon. I called to find out why and they said that is what they are charging. I then called 4 other companies all with approx $1.50 starting and an everyday price of $2.20 per gallon. I finally got a great deal elsewhere.
I had the tank delivered within 3 days but it was placed next to the driveway due to wet weather. I today had the tank moved finally because of the weather. I called Amerigas to have them come get the tank and they said, "We no longer credit people for gas removed from the tank." I have not paid the bill for the gas they put in and I WILL NOT! However, I am going to attempt to take them to small claims or other means to get money I paid for the 40% in my tank. I would let everyone know that with the 222 gal they put in the bill was over $1000. So don't trust this company. Look around and be informed. Good luck to you all.

I am letting everyone know that Amerigas claims they delivered gas to my property which is gated and guard dog on site in Nov 2016-when everyone in family was out of the country. They have no proof other than a computer created receipt. No receipt was left because they were unable to access our property. I foolishly paid the bill, over the phone, without verifying the charges. Now that I have overpaid, they are now trying to get more out of me for tank rental and charging $36 late fees each month. I owe the tank rental but have overpaid them already for services not delivered. The office is unable to provide proof of delivery, which they can't since the property was locked. Be very aware of their billing charges. Their tank is being removed. I highly recommend you get your own tanks and pay much less. Amerigas is not trustworthy and they overbill you for services.

Shame on AmeriGas for taking advantage of the elderly over charging them for gas, tacking on fees for hazmat and refueling cost (These charges are incurred by the propane provider but are charged to the consumer. Amount we have paid in the last 4 years is $125.00). We have always prepaid for our propane after our last fill. We were charged 1.899/gal and every propane company in the area was at 1.599. We had another company come and transfer propane from AmeriGas to their tank and had them set AmeriGas tank at the end of the driveway for pick up. AmeriGas then sent us a bill for 39.00 which I am not going to pay. I believe us to be even!

We have had AmeriGas since we bought our current house because that is the tank that was already here. We always thought that their prices were high but didn't do a follow through with other companies. On April 4, 2017 we had checked our tank. We were down to like 18%. They told us to have a delivery before 7-10 days we would have to pay $154.99 plus $60.00 surcharge, told them, "Nope no way. Come and get your tank off our property" and hung up.
Moments later they called back asked what was the problem. Told the person we were not paying that fee. They agreed to drop the $154.99 but would charge the $60.00 so ok just get us some propane. They never have the price on the ticket left in the door or under the house siding (nice trick there) so got the bill today 4/10/17 over $900. and $2.89 per gallon. So I called around to different companies asking what they were charging. $1.59 per gallon.
Called AmeriGas, told them to stop our service and come and get their gas and tank. What they told me was a charge of 59.99 for the truck to come and pump gas out and 35 cents per gallon to pump it from tank to truck. "Are you kidding me," I said. "Nope," the rude little ** said. So I just told them, "Come get your equipment off our property". "Next Tuesday," she says. "What time," I say. She says, "No clue. A technician will call you on Monday or Tuesday Morning". "Fine," says I. Keeping fingers crossed. If they do us like they have done to so many other reviews I have read, and don't show up week after week, we will be pumping that gas out ourselves and charging them fees. This company needs to be shut down.

Then I check with my mother, who uses 6 times the amount I do for heating and cooking: she is being charged $4.85 per gallon. My mother doesn't check the amount per gallon-she is elderly and simply pays the bill without question. So I have been overcharged, my mother has been overcharged, and I was lied to in the office.

I have been a customer of AmeriGas for many years. They used to be a very good company, and always held up their end of the deal. The last few years they have turned into one of the shadiest, greedy, scheming companies I have dealt with.
1st of all they have bumped the prices of the gas up to double and in some cases TRIPLE what the average going rate of gas is. I've shopped around to switch to a new company, and every single company I spoke to was appalled by the prices I have been charged, and they have all told me that they have seen a huge increase of new customers who have all left AmeriGas due to the exact same reasons. I have multiple homes, and all of them were with AmeriGas, I am currently down to just one tank with them, and will be switching once I use up the incredibly over-priced fuel that is currently in my tank.
This time I am going to call them to notify them that I have switched companies and I will be sending them an invoice for every day I have the tank on my property until they pick it up. I will only do this because of my latest experience with them. At one of my homes I switched to a new company, I called AmeriGas to let them know that I was ending service with them and they could come pick up the tank. They told me that they were not sure when they would get here, but it should be within the next 2 weeks. I personally moved their tank out to my driveway so it would be simple for the driver to just back up and grab it, instead of having to get it across the yard and through my gates. They picked up the tank a few days ago. Instead of a thank you for making our lives much easier letter, I received a bill of $59.99 for a service dispatch charge.
I immediately called them up and told them that I did all the work FOR them, and I will not be paying them for picking up their own tank. They have 0% chance of getting even 1 penny from me for picking up their tank. Like I said this next tank I have them pick up, I will send them a storage invoice for every day it is here. Also, every company I spoke with while shopping around told me that the hazmat fees you see on your bill are a scam, there is NO such thing as a hazmat fee. They have gone down hill so fast and so far that before long they will be out of business. They are not a monopoly like they seem to think that they are. We all have other options, and it looks like most of the customers they HAD are leaving them due to their greed and lack of service.

I've used AmeriGas in Rollinsville, CO for almost three years. I depended on them for heating 9000 feet up in the mountains. It was a total nightmare. Initially, I was using their auto-fill option. One day, I noticed my propane was low, so I called into their Evergreen, CO office. Upon investigation, AmeriGas claimed I owed them $1,400 as they had been filling my tank during the winter. I found this strange, as I had been previously paying them monthly for a year and never had a balance. They also never sent invoices for any of these deliveries. Nonetheless, running low on propane, I paid them off and ordered 100 more gallons will-call.
They arrived on the determined delivery date and put the gas in the wrong tank, leaving the yellow slip on my door. The only trouble was, I didn't realize this at the time. That weekend, my gas ran out. They sent out a guy to put a few gallons in to hold me over on the delivery. Growing suspicious of the company due to the mistakes, I canceled the auto-fill option entirely and went to will-call orders. This is where things got really bad.
I asked the company for a billing statement showing the gas consumed and what tank it went into for that $1400 SNAFU. My reasoning being that if they messed up once and put it into the wrong tank, and I had to verify this, how many other times had they messed up? Could they have overcharged me? Well, I asked -- and the only problem is, here we are a year later and I am still waiting on that invoice. Just to repeat -- this company charged me $1,400, and refused to demonstrate that the debt was actually mine after being caught making an egregious error -- literally putting gas in the wrong propane tank.
Moving on to the will-call experience, the people who answer the phone in Evergreen, CO are the rudest people I've ever dealt with. They literally don't care if they make a clerical error and you run out of gas. They will make no exceptions, and you as the customer will have no recourse. For example, on January 6th of this year, I placed a propane order with them. I have phone records to prove it. Over ten days later, the delivery date lapses and I contact them. They had no record of my order at all. I am now down to around 20%, and the order is weeks out. Naturally, given that they made a mistake, it would make sense to expedite the delivery to my home, so I don't run out of propane in -10 degree weather. Not only did they refuse to do this, they were blatantly rude to me in the process. I don't understand how these people have jobs in customer service if they can't even do that politely.
Additionally, they randomly changed the prices of my propane on an order-by-order basis. Some months, my will-call for 100 gallons would be around $176, and others it would be around $250. I'm not sure if this is a normal part of their policy, but it seemed super shady. It really appeared like nobody who answered the phone at their Colorado offices had any idea of what was going on.
On top of that, the other times they were able to take the order, they would still mislead me on delivery times. The minimum time they would take is two weeks -- for a single delivery -- and they have a depot and a fleet of trucks 6 miles from my house. Most of the time, they just missed their estimated delivery dates. Again, no recourse if you're low on propane and need it faster, despite them being 6 miles away, they basically told me to go pound sand when I would call and ask for help.
Randomly, last month, they decided to change the minimum order amount for me. They now say I can no longer order 100 gallons "will-call," but instead I must order 200 gallons. This can be up to 500 bucks for me, and some tanks are 250 gallons max. They are saying you have to literally fill up your tank to get propane from them? Ridiculous. They are clearly trying to muscle me out as a customer. Well, I am not going down without a fight, and I will do my best see that this company pays for their abuses. I moved out of that house. All I have to focus on now is recovering my losses from this company. Whatever you do, do not use AmeriGas. Go through any other company. You will be ripped off. You will have no recourse as a customer, and these guys don't deserve your hard-earned money. Pathetic.

I was reading reviews on here and was recently in the same situation as another reviewer. I had called a few months ago to postpone deliveries until February just so I wouldn't have a bill and knew my tank would last until then. I was asked what date in feb., so I chose feb. 8. Well Feb. 12 rolled around, no delivery. I called on Feb. 13 no answer so I called back Feb. 14 - this is all to local office. I asked when I was getting a delivery. I was told my ticket was pulled, I should get a delivery this week. I told them I was on 10 percent and lady told me she would note that so they would know. So weekend rolls around and no delivery, I was on 7 percent by then and it was cold at night. I called on 20th but no answer.
I worked the entire next day and upon returning home on the 21st, there was ticket on my door, curled up by door knob, stating my tank was empty and they turned it off and I would have to call to have someone come out to turn back on and check things. I was furious. It was cold out, so I had to use electric heater for part of night. I called next morning complaining and was told if it is on 5 percent or below they have to turn it off... BUT no communication, no phone call, text, or email. Had I known that day I could have called to have it set up for someone to come out next day. They didn't have an exact time someone could come out the next afternoon. So I set it up for the following morning -- another cold night!! I was asked, "How about first thing tomorrow morning" and I said, "What time is that?" I was told about 8:30 and I said that was fine, even though I didn't want to get up early on my day off.
So I got up at 8 am and waited. 8:30 rolled around, no one there, 9 no one there! I called at 9:20 and was told that the driver's work day starts at 8 and they have to get equipment ready for their day and then they head out, I was definitely not told that the prior day!!! She said their morning runs were 8-12 noon! I was so mad. I could have slept later and was not told complete information the day before. Finally driver arrived around 10:10. Drivers are always nice and polite and friendly. He turned gas on and check stove and heat.
I only have had AmeriGas for 12 years because that is the company of the tank that was here when we moved here. I sent a message to corporate and they emailed me saying they sent the information to local and for them to contact me! I didn't want local to contact me -- corporate should do something about all of these issues! Such poor communication and undependable -- probably due to not enough workers, but that still shouldn't be the case. If short-handed, then they should say so and figure out ways to make service happen even it is extended hours -- Our local office closes at 4:30 WOW. Communication is the key, we are in the age of so much available methods, email, text, phone. I have had several problems with this company. Have contacted my local office and customer care, am promised that there will be a solution that management will contact me. After being a customer for 11 years with a perfect payment rate I would thing that common decency would at least warrant a courtesy call. Here is a list of the some of the problems we have had with this company.
First the meter on THEIR tank is not send sending information back to the company, so instead of fixing the problem (what an unusual concept) they decided to just fill us up whenever they were in the area so we were getting filled even when the tank was at 60% (and of course getting charged the delivery fee) and always right before our contract is up eating up any accrued extra of the payments and of course raising the monthly payment. This led to us requesting a "will call" delivery system, instead of them just fixing the problem that is in their tank. At this point I started looking around for another company and found out that the local company was 1.29 per gallon less.
After contacting AmeriGas several times they agreed to charge us at a reduced rate rather than lose the customer (this rate was still .20 cents higher than the competitor). However, this resulted in them charging us at the original rate of 3.29 pr gallon and us making several calls each month "reminding" them of the contract that we both signed. This went on for 3 months till they finally "corrected" the problem. If we were not on top of our bills they would have kept charging the higher rate at 1.09 pr gallon. Average difference of 300.00+ per fill. Now, February in the Pocono mountains and of course cold. We call them at 32% and were told originally they would be there later in the week.
At the end of the week, no delivery, so more calls were placed. We were then told 7-10 days but not to worry they would be there the next day. No delivery and told they would be there Monday. Monday more calls, no delivery. Tuesday more calls, no delivery. After 5 calls to the Customer Care line (More like the "I don't" care line) we were promised that 1.) management would call to speak to me or my wife. 2.) They would call to give us an approximate time for delivery. It is now 1 PM and have not received any calls so have called them again. Now being told they will be here within hour. Not placing much trust in their word. To me it feels as this complaint means nothing because they really just don't care. My hope is that someone reads this and the dozens of other complaints and makes the wise decision to find a different provider.

I am on an automatic replenishment program with Amerigas. I lived at my house for over 10 years. I ran out of propane this summer and had to get an emergency shipment. I noticed my tank was getting low (under 30%) so I called them to let them know (which I shouldn't have to do because they should be forecasting my demand -- but I did anyway). They said they would expedite my shipment. They came yesterday, filled up my tank, but they didn't turn on the gas to my house because it was below 2%. They didn't notify me, so I woke up this morning with no heat, no hot water, etc. I called them to find out what happened and asked why they didn't notify me. They said they left a "paper", which I still haven't seen. No phone call. No email, supposedly they left a paper document somewhere. Are we living in the 21st century or what?? I have a 3 year old with no heat this morning. Nice Job Amerigas.

I pointed out that wasn't what was promised on Tuesday or Wednesday. The person who answered my call, then the supervisor, insisted that I was mistaken and the problem was mine. After 18 years of being a customer, I told the supervisor they offered no service. Last year I waited one month for a delivery. Needless to say, I'm in the process of locating another company for propane service. Amerigas is zero in customer service in my experience and opinion. BEWARE!

Awful company!! Had them for only 2 months as a new homeowner, the tank was already through them. Tank was down to 15% which I get you're supposed to call at 30% - I was unaware of. They put me down for a delivery and said I should be okay until someone delivered. Nope! Thankfully we have a wood burner to heat the house somewhat! They told me up to 7 business days to deliver (online it listed 7 days for the delivery, not specifying business days) by the 5th day they still did not have a driver scheduled and no clue yet when we would get propane!
Meanwhile it's been highs of 20 degrees!! Argued and argued and the lady just kept stating they tell customers to call at 30% and it was in the welcome packet. I told her customers are supposed to be a priority - meanwhile we have no heat! And since we ran out they were going to charge a $110 leak check fee on top of filling it! I terminated my contract early and ate the $150 early termination fee. I got a local company to bring a tank out and fill the same day! DO NOT USE AMERIGAS!!!

Upon investigation I found they are charging more than twice what other local providers are charging. Stay small, stay local, stay accountable.

Amerigas in Whitewater, WI is a disappointing company to work with. Their receptionist is nasty. Samantha is usually in a terrible mood and when, on rare occasion she is friendly on the phone, she doesn't record information properly. Furthermore, the employees often don't come when scheduled. They make excuses such as "the truck has broken down," or "I can't get the truck to the tank," a tank they have been servicing for years. They leave a note on the door and say they will reschedule, but you have to call Samantha numerous times and wait weeks to months to have them come back. We recently went with a new propane company and Amerigas had to come pick up their tank.
Once again it took much longer than they told us and they waited for a day after it rained. They made us sign a damage waiver and promised to not pick up the tank if the ground was too wet. Interestingly enough, once the damage waiver was signed, they showed up on the wettest day possible and ruined the yard. There are not many other propane companies that service this area, so I assume that is why they get away with this kind of poor business behavior.

Had a tank installed and everything OK for a couple of years. Then they started adding charges (Tank Service fee, Tank inspection fee, Valve inspection, etc.) on top of the rental fee and stated boosting the price of Propane. You are locked in with a contract and have no recourse. Final insult was when the price of Propane went to nearly $6 (everyone else charging a bit over $2) and the fees and cost of propane was nearly $900 a year for under 100 gallons. Amerigas came and topped off my tank that had already been filled by another company (I own my tank). I never ordered the gas and when I called to talk to them about the order I was told I was on a forecast program. I told the rep I never signed up for a forecast program and had just had my tanked filled at 99 cents a gallon from H&H Gas and Amerigas charged me $2.689 per gallon, plus $10.59 for a Hazmat fee and a $4.72 Fuel Recovery fee. That's more than a 260% increase not counting the additional fees. I have access to the real price of propane and during the month of September the real price was $0.39 per gallon.
This is price gouging at its worst. When I told them to remove the gas I was told they are not able to do that. While the rep was very nice on the phone and said he would see what he could do to adjust the price, the fact is that Amerigas is filling tanks without any authorization and the consumer is stuck paying for the gas. We have multiple propane gas suppliers in this area and all of them are right around the $0.99 per gallon cost except for Amerigas. Don't buy gas from these people!

Needless to say I asked that they provide documentation about the tank lease (plus the serial number for me to verify) and the refund (btw, their own website says they issue no refunds). I had to call 3 days in a row to remind them.
Well, today, day 3, they finally said, "We dug through everything and we cannot find either document, so we'll just assume that the tank is yours..." Now, I did not feel like being nasty, so I just said thank you, have a nice day, but I wonder how many people will bite the bait and just give them the money. Which I paid for at approximately $3 per gallon. Today, I called inquiring about the pickup. I was told that they were awaiting a call from me to remove the tanks. I told the representative that I never changed my mind about the removal, I was going to call back to speak to someone about my disagreement about their recently revised policy changes and unreasonable charges. Which I did to no avail.

They call repeatedly if you don't pay within a day and a half and all of the correspondence you get from them is "we want your money"... cheats.
I believe the tank did not work b/c they did not want it to work so they could always say it was empty or near empty. I do not believe we got the amount of propane they charged us for!! How could we tell?? Thus when they picked up the tanks they said one was empty but how could it be empty when we never experienced that it was empty -- continually using propane for our oven/stove. Interesting...so rebated 96 gallons on the propane tank for our shop. 120 gallon tank --- gave us 96 gallons and ZERO for the big tank for our house which could not have been empty!!!
It had not been that long since the 500 gallon tank was filled and weather was good so the majority of the use for it was hot water tank and oven/stove. Guess we must have used 400 gallons worth of propane on oven/stove & hot water tank. Magically it went to zero propane the day they picked it up. In reply to the insult that he paid to you and me, I told him "it goes with the territory and a minimum purchase should not be required". It's my understanding that the market both in oil and propane are awash in oversupply and that prices should be dropping, but Amerigas in order to compensate for the price drop and to maintain profit margins they are requiring minimum deliveries of propane. By what authority do they operate... Is there a law allowing a public utility? Such as Amerigas to do such a thing. If there is there should not be. My experience with this company has been a horrific one. My error in this is that I didn't write a review sooner. Being in the customer service myself, I give companies the benefit of the doubt when I deal with them personally. Big mistake there! My involvement began when I had my home built in 2007. We didn't know much about propane or propane companies. My suggestion is to do your research. There are plenty of good companies out there and Aero Energy has been head and shoulders above over Amerigas in every way possible. The Amerigas I am having an issue with is located in White Hall, MD. So, they installed their tanks when I built my house and I used them for propane until sometime in 2014 when I decided to shop prices. I started researching prices and began to realize I was being ripped off between $2 to almost $3 per gallon.
So, I signed up with Aero Energy and they are a reputable company. I have nothing but good experiences with them since the change. All I had to do was send them a letter that I own the tanks to sign up with them. When we built the house, my wife and I discussed this. I remember saying, "When you lease you are stuck with their terms and conditions. When you own you have more freedom." It is just the standard. So, on May 30th, 2014 I received my first delivery from Aero Energy. So, one year passes after I stopped using their and I hear nothing from Amerigas until April 30th, 2015. I get an invoice for tank rentals for the amount of $140.98 and this was the first rental invoice after 7 years of having the tanks we had EVER seen. My wife and I were confused, so I call the office and ask questions. It was a civilized conversation and the gentleman says we are leasing and he has the paperwork in front of him.
So, I ask for a copy and he emails a copy of the contract because I knew this did not seem or feel right. First of all, the information was wrong. They have me down for one 1,000 gallon tank, when I actually have two. You would think they would know what they installed? Then I look at the lease agreement and notice that nobody signed it. My wife nor I signed it, and neither did a rep from Amerigas. What? How can we have a lease agreement without signatures to make it an agreement? I also tried to locate proof that we purchased our tanks. We had nothing with all the other papers we saved when we built the house and my wife is meticulous about these things. However, this didn't surprise me because I doubt we ever got a copy of anything. When this gentleman sent these documents, it was the first time either my wife or I saw them. Their documentation on the facts has been atrocious from the beginning.
From there, I proceeded to check online and ask friends about them and everything I found was negative. I had to dig to find anything positive and that is nationwide. A good friend of mine told us they did the same thing to them and threatened to rip out his tanks. Their situation got ugly and that is all I will say about their situation because it is not place to discuss other people's business. But the conversation lead me to contact a lawyer on May 12th, 2015 to discuss this situation and my legal rights. I gave him all the documentation and I had them send a legal letter with a deadline to respond. I still have all this documentation in my possession. The deadline for them was June 19th, 2015 or we were going to consider this matter dropped. We never received a response from Amerigas or their attorney, so we thought it was over. Wrong!!!
I just received another notice dated 6/7/16 for $156.88. It does not say rental, however I do not have any outstanding invoices with these people, therefore I can only assume it is the same garbage they tried to pull last year. That is why I am filing a formal complaint with every agency I can think of. I will post on every social media sources until they leave me and my family alone once and for all. Since I thought this issue was resolved, I didn't file any complaints prior or post anything on social media. However, I am seeing this as harassment, and falsified documents. It is not even about the money. I could pay the rental fees and just be done with it and continue on my merry way, but it is the principle and how they operate. Their customer service stinks and they do whatever they have to cover their butts.
If you are researching propane companies, stay clear of Amerigas!!! They rip you off, they are dishonest, and they are so combative when you catch them doing shady stuff. I am a private type of person and I do not like going this route, but this company has left me no choice in this matter. This is the first of many postings about my experience with this awful company and my first ever about any company for that matter! All I want is for them to stop harassing me! When they stop, I will stop!

"Thank you for calling Amerigas, where customer service and safety are our number one priority"... is the on hold message that you hear. It could not be further from the truth. I am a tenant in a house, I moved in on Feb on this year and I have had to put out nearly $2000 since. First a bogus $500 deposit, then a $250 safety inspection (which had already been done, but they denied delivery until it was done...again), and a $200 charge to hook up a stove which my landlord paid...but then I got billed for it (trying to scam double payment).
But the biggest slap in the face just occurred. I was shocked to see that the tank was at 15%, since it has only been used for cooking and hot water since I have not needed heat for awhile. I called to set up delivery on Wed 05/25 and was first told that I had to pay for it in advance (which I never had to do since I moved here, I was always billed). They had me up against a wall and they were unwilling to budge, nor explain why and how the account switched to COD, so I was strong armed into having to pay for this upfront.
That following Friday, I noticed that they had not shown yet, which is odd because they have not yet once taken more than 2 days to fill the tanks before. I called and was rudely told that "because of the holiday weekend, it is taking longer to get delivery that it will not completed until sometime the following week". I had a house full of people expected to arrive that Sat, and now was forced to cancel for fear that it would run out from cooking.
Flash forward to today, Thursday June 2, they still have not shown. The tank is now at 2%. I had to call their 800 customer service line to be told that it will take 10 business days for them to deliver. I explained that the tanks are very close to being completely empty and he was willing to expedite the delivery for an additional $300 PLUS $100 for after hours delivery. I have never been treated like this before from a company that exclaims that customer service is their priority. And I just saw a truck drive by as I type this. Then a year after we discontinued service they began billing us for monthly tank rental... out of the blue. I called the office and asked to speak to a manager. In any event, I called them and scheduled a delivery. At first, I told them I'd pay them cash on delivery, they said their drivers can't take cash (I wonder why). Then I gave them a debit card number and they processed the payment right then - before delivery. Needless to say, the next day they did not deliver any propane.
In addition to their terrible service, they've sent me to collection for a service they didn't even do. It was a billing error on their side. When I called for a man to fix the fireplace he said there was nothing wrong with it and then AmeriGas would not come out and turn the gas on again. They said they have to have their guy check it out. They tried to sell me services I did not need. The renter in the house was without heat and AmeriGas was being obstinate they were not going to turn it on, and the furnace man needed to check to see if the furnace was going to work or not.
Apparently if you do not use their services are not going to let you have their gas. A bunch of...Will they put me through and said it was their company policy. They were no help at all and they hindered me getting my fireplace back online. They actually hindered it. Do not use this company. I was a fool to use them for 20 years. When we moved into our house the people before us had Amerigas and said they suggest to stay with them. Worst mistake we have made in a while. First, we called them and asked them for a new tank. They said they would switch out tanks for us. They never called, brought a tank, nothing. It felt like we were forgotten. We were also on automatic delivery and, again, they forgot about us. We were out of propane for a while. Then they decided to raise our price, which was already at $2.49 a gallon ($1.10 more than other propane companies). That was the last straw.
We politely told them that we decided to go with a different company. Immediately they were up in arms. All we wanted was a polite cancellation of business. They said nothing about being sorry or even trying to convince us to stay. Then for the past one and a half months we have been calling them to ask them when they were picking up the tank. Well the first excuse was, our truck is broken. Well things do happen, so we gave them some time to fix it. We then called them back on the day that they said they were going to pick it up. We called them back to see what time they were coming just so we knew when to run our errands. We called and they basically stated that they couldn't, in a defensive tone. We just wanted to know when they were coming, not to complain. Poor customer service and all lies. Never go with Amerigas.

Next door neighbor had a fill up the same week at $2.60/gal (I have both receipts). When we bought our house the previous homeowner asked them to fill up to 30% so us as new homeowners would not be hit with a big bill. Day 1. They came and filled the entire tank and invoiced us anyway. One time I took a photo of the tank gauge on the day of a fill up, prior to. They invoiced us for 10% more than they actually put in. Total scam. I called them for weeks to try and straighten out and never got a callback. Non existent customer service. Next I'm locking the tank door and canceling their service. They can come get their tank if they wish but that will be at no expense to us. Terrible, terrible company. Shame on them for taking advantage of the consumer.

I found a cheaper propane dealer last month and let Amerigas know of my plans to go with the other vendor. Two days later, my tank (and the propane that was still in it, that I paid for) was gone. In reading the fine print of the recent mailing I got from Amerigas "updating policies and pricing" I now understand they wait until the highest daily rate is in effect, which you would never know about unless you called every day. It is posted nowhere, then they run out and top off your tank. I end up paying $3.60 a gallon without any idea why, compared to neighbor's paying $2.10. If you want to do it on your own and wait till its tank is at 30% (no less) and call them, that type of service would cost you an extra $118 fee annual. If you change companies during your "rental term" there's another fee. I don't know when my rental term ends, of course. I'm just complaining and have no idea how to remedy any of this trickery except that I plan to move next year one exit down where there is no propane.

After multiple calls and missed appointment dates by Amerigas, they finally came to my home on May 26, 2015 to pump the remaining propane out which was about 30%. I was not home and he did not leave a receipt. Then the guy came the next day to remove the tank and notified me that there was still 10% propane remaining in it.
It is against the law to transport a tank with more than 5%. He took it anyways and left a receipt for tank removal. I got a check from Amerigas expecting it to be my reimbursement for the 30% minus Service/dispatch fee. The check was only for 5%. I called Beth at my local office and was told it would have to be researched as they did not have a record of my May 26th pump out! Of course after a few weeks, I had to call them back to check on the status of their research. I spoke with Beth and Debbie multiple times from May to July. On July 7, 2015, Beth stated that they could not find any record of my pump out and they agreed to send me a check for 20%. At this point I was done contacting them every other week and agreed to the amount.
Fast forward to today... September 4, 2014. NO CHECK YET!!! I called and spoke to Beth and had to remind her of my story from the beginning. I met the man at my cabin in Idyllwild CA and he was very nice. He said I had a 120 gal tank and that my tank only needed 40.2 gal. He filled it up, gave me a receipt (spelled my last name wrong. He put his last name as it is only 4 letters less than mine, which I didn't realize until today, ugggg). He did not write in how many gallons he put in so I wrote that I was given 40.2 and owed 159.8 on the receipt (in his presence). In hindsight I should have had him initial it. But I'm a trusting person which now I see is a bad trait.
Fast forward to 2015. Well we hardly go up and use much gas so now it needs filling and I called. They said they have no records of the transaction. I said I would take them to small claims court and was told "go ahead." I sent them the canceled check and they changed their tune and Linda said she would try to get manager approval. Today I spoke with Linda and she said that they don't keep records that far back and there is nothing she can do so go ahead and take them to court. Blanca still works for them but doesn't remember. I'm sure they have many customers and I can understand that. They said because I wrote it in they can't do anything about it. Well even if they put an entire 120 gals in I would still be owed 80 gal. We just purchased our tank after 11 and a half years for $1,018.00. They are trying to tell us that to get to the price of the tank as of today, they will take the purchase price of the tank, less a depreciation of about $50.00 per year. We have spent probably the last 5 years haggling with them over per gallon charges, late charges, misc credits, and tank buy-out price.
According to the person we spoke with earlier today, the tank price today is $1,600.00, and is then depreciated since the day it was probably manufactured (2002), not from the day they sank it in the ground. They are unable to tell us the amount they actually paid for the tank when it was put in (12/2003). They charge whatever they feel like - not only for the tank, but for the propane as well. We had a fill in December at $1.90 (our lock-in price), then our last fill in February was at $2.85 per gallon (when the lock-in expired, but they hadn't sent a new contract to us - they said it was on us to remember to request a new contract).
Other non-AmeriGas customers (ones who have just recently purchased their tanks) are paying as little as $0.90 per gallon. We fought with them about that price, and were able to get a $500 credit. When we just spoke with them now to get the buy-out price, they reminded us that they kindly gave us that credit so we should just pay whatever they requested for the buy-out of the tank. (Do the math - two fills as overcharged would cover the cost of said tank.)

If I could, I would give them NO stars. We were forced to contract with AmeriGas because we were "told" they owned the tank. In April 2015 after 12 years of paying more than my neighbors for propane and numerous calls about the rate responded to with basically that's what it costs, I finally spoke with someone who advised we should have been in the "**" (she used our community name inferring it applied specifically and only to our community, but will withhold the name for legal reasons) contracted rate. The rate I was paying according to my bill was $4.49/9. I was told the negotiated or contract rate was for $2.04/9. I obviously asked for a refund.
This was when she explained the contract was with the HOA and that the HOA was responsible for telling the community residents that there was a contract in place and that each person would have to call for themselves to get that rate. She further explained it wasn't their fault our HOA failed to get this information out to the community and for this reason I would not be given any restitution. I asked how long the contract was in place, but because of computer crashes, she could not give me that information. I took my concerns to the district manager (DM) in a certified letter explaining I had called in Feb 2010, Sept 2012 and again in Dec 2013, giving the customer service (CS) all my info - address, community, what my neighbor was paying, etc and was never told anything about the contracted rate for my community.
I got a call from the DM late last week. His response was vague - rates change daily like gas for your car, there's a lock-in rate I should have paid for, I didn't say the magic words "give me the "**" community rate", etc. Basically a repeat of what I'd been told by the CS. However, to be "just and fair" he would approve to have my last two (yes, only 2) invoices adjusted. He did tell me the contract was initiated in the fall of 2011. When I hung up, I was frustrated and immediately got on the phone calling my neighbors and the HOA to collect information. This is the twist with inconsistent information come into play.
I specifically called every HOA president from 2011 to current in an attempt to find out more about this so-called contract we had with AmeriGas and the HOA neglect to inform the community. You can color me surprised when I learned an HOA president had been through the same situation in Oct 2009. He was told about a "contracted price" and fought for a fair restitution which he received. He asked for more info and was told a renewal was due and if they chose to renew he would be receiving it soon. The HOA president did announce it at the annual HOA meeting later that month and waited for a renewal contract to pass his desk (I was out of town for that meeting). When one didn't come and his call wasn't returned, he assumed AmeriGas didn't want to renew the contract.
I also heard back from one neighbor who was currently in talks with the same customer service rep who told me about the "**" community rate and was also a past HOA president. He knew nothing about a contracted price and was working with the same CS I was and she hadn't informed him of such a rate. He immediately called the CS after we hung up and she told him there was no "**" community rate and she didn't know what he was talking about. After a little more pushing, she then said "Oh, you mean the rate we use with communities that have a lot of AmeriGas tanks in them? That's not a negotiated rate, that's just a discounted rate we give in communities that have a lot of AmeriGas leased tanks." When he asked why he wasn't given the rate, she did at least stay consistent in stating "because he didn't ask for it."
If you believe this latest statement from the AmeriGas CS, this rate - whether you call it contracted or discounted - is supposedly out of the goodness of their heart and not really negotiated with any one HOA or community rep, thus no one really knows about it. With that logic, how could a customer ask for a rate that no one really knows about?
I've talked to another neighbor who knew about the "contracted rate" but does confirm there was never any real signed contract, but said he had overheard something about some "special" type of rate for AmeriGas in 2007, but because he didn't use AmeriGas for his propane he didn't really pay much attention. I have asked for proof of a contract or such rates with actual pricing. Doubt I'll ever see such a document. In the meantime, I'm running out of propane, refuse to pay my outrageous bill and can't get another company in to fill my tank until I can get out from under my current contract which I refuse to pay to do...

They nickel and dime you for every cent, quite literally. Now, they're asking me to pay an additional $1.01 per gallon for my new contract. That $1 ($3.41/gallon) increase can result in about $1400 more a year ($116/month). That's a ridiculous increase and it's not competitive with going rates in the area. I told the representative I can barely afford my current rate, and I think it's unfair to raise it so significantly, but she told me she doesn't know why I got the rate I did last year!!!

My parents are both in their eighties, don't hear well, get confused easily, so they depend on me to help them with their affairs. They closed the account the first of the year and waited at least a month and a half for them to pick up their tanks. My father kept calling and they kept saying they would pick them up. The large refund of over $700 they were supposed to get back, was eventually whittled down to a little over $500, with their hidden charges and fees. My folks received their refund, the account was closed and we were done with them.
About one month ago, my dad gets a call from an 800 Amerigas number, and they told him he owed them money. My father got confused when told me, but he said it was about something that occurred in 2013. We are now in 2015. Really? I told my dad to not speak to them again, but let me handle it. I called the 800 number, which I believe was the DE office, but they were closed so I was transferred to the local Elkton, MD office. I spoke with a lady there who stated she had no idea who called my dad. She said the account was closed, and there were no notes in the system. So, I said thanks, and forgot about it.
Today my dad gets a bill for over $700. I was livid and seriously ready to rip someone a new one. My dad had already called, the same 800 number, and was told again, this was from 2013. Who keeps track of something from two years ago, on an account that was closed six months ago? He said it was something about an error they made on his account, mixed with someone else's account, and they found it in an audit. Well, again he can't hear and he is confused, so I told him again to not speak to these people. I tried to call but they were closed, and I again was transferred to the local office. I left a message that I want a call-back by Monday.
I am so damn angry right now, I could scream. I feel like they are crooks, cheaters, and they are trying to take advantage of a senior couple. How the hell can they get away with something like this? I will get the full story on Monday, and if I don't like what I hear, I am getting a lawyer. When I looked on the Internet and saw all of these complaints I was shocked. After years of being a customer of first, People's Gas Co, which merged into Heritage Gas Co, which Amerigas took over, I received regular monthly bills. Gas is supplied to 1/2 block of houses (at least 8 if not more) by an underground tank. Starting in Sep of 2014 after an average of $60.00 a month invoices I received an invoice of OVER $4,400.00. Of course, this was settled, but since then I have not received regular monthly bills.
No one comes to read my meter on a monthly basis. 2 to 3 months go by before I can get someone to come out, read my meter and send me an invoice, and to get that it takes 6 to 9 calls. The underground tank is not being filled on a regular basis. When it empties there's a VERY strong odor of gas that fills the utility room where my water heater is located. In fact that's how I can tell the tank is almost or all empty, by the smell which is followed in 2 or 3 days by no gas at all.
Complaining about not receiving regular monthly bills may sound stupid, but it's a hardship when I get a bill for over $200 for 3 months service. What I am forced to do now, is to read my meter myself, figure out the difference between the months, multiply that by the rate per cubic foot, estimate taxes by taking the amount of tax off the last invoice AND DRIVING ALL THE WAY DOWN TO THE NEAREST OFFICE and paying in person BECAUSE if I send an amount in, they lose the check. For the past five years or so, we have been an Amerigas propane residential customer in upstate New York. For the first two to three years, the local company provided reasonable service at realistic prices comparable to other companies in the area. Then this company was bought out by Amerigas with the promise that prices and service would be better for existing customers.
But things did change dramatically about 18 months ago. In September 2013, propane prices started to creep up compared to the competitors - $2.90/gallon compared to others in the $2.50-2.60 range. Soon thereafter came an extremely cold winter and a shortage of propane. Amerigas was able to supply enough propane, but the prices shot up to $4.79, then $4.97, then $4.90, then $4.90, then $4.60 through the winter and spring months. At the time, I thought that supply and demand dictated these prices. Well I was wrong! According to the US Energy Information Administration data available on the internet, the AVERAGE RETAIL PRICES in New York state were $3.08, $2.76, $3.89, $3.30, and $3.08 for those same winter and spring weeks. The competition was selling propane at least 50% less than Amerigas even through this "shortage" period.
Since last Winter according to this same US Energy Information Administration data source, the average wholesale price of propane has dropped significantly from $2.71 in February 2014 down to as low as $0.57 in January 2015. However, Amerigas continues to raise residential prices from the last spring. In my case, prices grew from $4.60 to $4.85 during this period.
In addition to this price gouging, Amerigas also has a variety of pricing options for residential users. My neighbor who uses much less propane per year than we do only paid $2.09/gallon last November when we paid $4.68/gallon. I asked the District Manager why a very low volume customer (200-300 gallons/year) was charged less than half of what we were paying (1300-1500 gallons/year). The response was that Amerigas was giving my neighbor a special low price in order to retain him as a customer. Does this make sense? Normally, larger volume customers get better prices than low volume users.
So I have started to collect information from competitors regarding their prices and services. Every other company that I have talked with maintains a policy of being competitive with the current market price in our area. Usually, this means within 5 to 8 cents/gallon of the local competitors. I requested that the local office correct or adjust my bills for the past 18 months or so. The District Manager told me that Amerigas sets the market price every week and that's what customers must pay. Follow-up calls/meetings have not been returned or have been postponed. My issue has been raised to the Area Director in Pennsylvania - again with no response.

I called the Warrenton Office to have my 500 gallon tank topped off. At the time I called I was at 35%. I got their voice mail, and requested that they fill my tank and requested a call back to verify the delivery. I called the next week at 30%, got their voice mail, no response. I repeated this action for 2 more weeks and was finally given an option to contact the national office. I was then told it would be 10 days. When they finally got out to fill my tank I was at <20%. I found out from the national office that the local offices do not have the ability to retrieve their voice mail, and to select the emergency option when calling them, and I will be patched to the national office. This seems like a stupid way to do business.
I notice that the neighborhood was given an option by Holtzman fuel service to remove the Amerigas tank and install a Holtzman tank, then in 3 years we could buy fuel from anybody and own the tank. I see a lot of neighbors taking this option, as there are a lot of tanks sitting on the curb. Amerigas is nonresponsive to their customers. I wish you the best of luck if you are using Amerigas.

I had been with Amerigas for 28 years. They never serviced their equipment and their tank was built in 1971. On January of 2014 the tank leaked to empty, Amerigas patch it. On January 2015 the tank leaked again, Amerigas patch it but the tank kept on leaking, they came back and fill it up but the leak continue. We kept calling the San Jose California and corporate in Pennsylvania with no response. We called a new gas company (Campora) and they removed the old tank. Amerigas is billing me for the two times they filled out their tank and leaked to empty. Amerigas is billing me for the gas that leaked at the price of $4.33 a gallon, twice as much as my new company price. Amerigas has been harassing me with that billing via emails, phone calls and mail. I am in my late 70's and cannot afford to pay for gas that evaporated from their old tank and also put my wife and myself in danger.

First off, the billing is based on estimates and is completely inaccurate. Once, I got 4 bills in the same month with all different amounts due. I believe the company needs to be audited by the it's and reviewed by state and federal agencies for their unfair practices. Next issue is their lack of communication. I was told my meter had to be removed and have a propane tank installed instead. Never told when, how, or where this will be done. Came home from work to find they installed the tank in front of my door to the house. It's been 4 months now and I'm still battling it out with them to move this thing. 2 more weeks or we're getting rid of gas altogether.

There was a nice gentleman standing on the side that happened to be a police officer and witness a guy in AmeriGas company propane truck hit my car. He told the police officer "I'll pull to the side so we can do the report for hitting this car." So the guy in AmeriGas company truck took off and left on the cop without doing the report.
So this guy did a hit and run accident and I called the corporate office here in Phoenix Arizona and they seem not to care for one of their worker's mistakes for this my vehicle and leaving the scene of the accident. Once again demanded they pick up the tank and would be charging a storage fee of $50 per month. Months went by so I again called as I couldn't get other service from another company with their tank there. Finally I called again and they scheduled a pick up March 26, 2014 between 1-4 pm. No show. Again I called reminding them I was charging a $50 per month storage fee. They rescheduled April 2014 between 1-4 pm. No show.
Two weeks ago I called again demanding they pick up the tank and the cost was $1,100 for 22 months of storage. I had to call the corporate office and they said they had to talk to legal. Yesterday I received a letter from their attorney accusing me of breach of contract by refusing access to their tank, they won't pay a dime. They will use all legal recourse against. We purchased a home last year; contacted Amerigas. The prior owner was credited for the balance of the propane in the tank on premises and we thought we then took over the account. In 12-degree weather a week ago, the heat stopped working. We contacted the Amerigas emergency number as the tank apparently was out of propane (new furnace and was working fine the night before). The house temperature went down to 32 degrees inside, and Amerigas informed us that there was nothing they could do because we didn't have an account with them. Apparently, although we and the prior owners talked with Amerigas, they never transferred the account or came to pick up their tank. After numerous conversations essentially begging them for help (and we had no problem paying for the gas we used, any emergency fees they would have charged and for any gas they put in the tank now), they told us they couldn't help and we were on our own.
Feeling we had no choice and dealing with an emergency (fear of freezing pipes and damage to the home, not to mention unreasonable temps), we rented a 100 lb. propane tank and had an emergency hookup done to provide heat to the home. This worked, and on Monday we continued to try to reach the local office for Amerigas to get a permanent solution. They informed us that we now had an illegal hookup (what the hell else were we supposed to do???), they would have to elevate this to a supervisor. We received no call from any supervisor and the local rep refused to either give us her name or her supervisor's name or contact info. After numerous calls back, basically begging - please tell us what to do and we'll do it! - we still had no contact from a supervisor and were told there is nothing they can do.
Today, after another call and being told the supervisor is busy because she is running 2 locations right now, we were told again there is nothing they can/will do. We called the national number, and they have elevated the issue. We just got a call back from the local rep telling us to pull the tank if we want, but they won't help us and don't want us as a customer because of the illegal (emergency) hookup. We hope to hear back from one higher supervisor that we hope will help us, but I have never dealt with this level of not caring and not trying to help a potential long-term client. I work in customer service and was taught to help our clients search for solutions - even when they may have made mistakes (or tried to come up with emergency solutions!). I am stunned and severely disappointed.

Three years ago, AmeriGas bought Suburban and it has been downhill since then. I have always been on a budget plan and never had a problem. That guaranteed I would never run out. Over the last 3 winters, I have run out at the end of December, the end of January and 2 out of the 3, I had also tune out in February. Their prices are at least $1.50 more than other suppliers in my area. According to AmeriGas, there was never an agreement for me to own my tank without purchasing it upfront. When I brought up the fact about owning it after 10 years, they said that was never an option. I can't get an answer on what the tank would cost for me to buy it.
If I want to change suppliers, I have to pay AmeriGas $1,200 to remove the tank. Nobody else will deliver because I do not own the tank. How do they know if you own the tank or not? I have been a customer of cactus propane for quite some time and was friends with the owner (so I and many others thought) then out of nowhere cactus sells us out!
Now we are left to either pay whatever Amerigas dictates or go without! We need gas for heat and cooking otherwise we will have to seek electric power which means changing the range the hot water heater the furnace and so on. Something should be done and soon.... All you have to do is read the many complaints about Amerigas and Ferrell gas to understand the frustration we suffer.
Today I called cactus to see what home delivery for propane was? It's 3.25 a gallon delivered that's 30 cents higher than cactus was at their last delivery and I know propane has been going down as I watch the national pricing. I myself had a very bad experience with Amerigas several years ago and will never under ANY circumstances do business with them again.
I believe it is time for the state of Arizona to step in and find out why no other retail propane dealers are allowed in this area? When the winter came found out from the heating company that there was no regulator on the small tank which was causing problems with the furnace to light. I called you again for about 2 weeks still no return calls. We had to take this small tank and get it filled ourselves for about 2 months.
Finally in Dec of 2014 someone called me and I told them I need to get some gas and that the small tank was not gonna work, it was running out to fast. I was told someone would call me back, NO ONE ever did. But your company delivered gas filling up a large tank without even asking how much gas we wanted, and this tank also had no regulator. You sent another guy out here to put a regulator on the tank and I had to sign for this and asked him was I having to pay for this and he said yes LABOR... WHY DO I HAVE TO PAY FOR YOUR COMPANY TO INSTALL YOUR TANK PROPERLY... then I receive this OUTRAGEOUS bill charging 6.06 a gallon. FIRST OF ALL I NEVER ASK ANYONE TO FILL THE TANK... ALSO 3.00 GALLON is NOT THE RATE for gas WHY would you put 167.2 gallons in a 200 gal tank... without the customers consent.

I heard nothing from them after that, so I called in the beginning of fall to make sure I was still on the auto delivery as I had never been set up on the budget plan. The lady I spoke with assured me that I was on the auto fill up, but did not know why I had not been on the budget plan. She also assured me that they had filled the tank at the time it was installed.
I kept waiting for the company to come and fill the tank in Dec, but heard nothing. I was getting low and believed they would fill it at any time. The gauged registered as 65%. On or around the 12th of the month I ran out of gas. I called to get it delivered and relayed to the lady what I had encountered and she stated that I had to pay in advance. It seems as tho my SS# had been put in incorrectly by someone in the company. I have excellent credit and told the lady that. She took my SS# again and checked. She apologized and said they would get the gas out as quickly as possible.
It took them three weeks to finally deliver, and if I had not seen the truck pass by my house, it may have been even longer. The day it was delivered I had a doctor appointment & was not here, so they put a lock on the tank so I could not use the gas. Now I have a tank full of gas with an inaccurate gauge that I can not use because it has been locked. I am 76 years old and that's the only heat I have in the back of my house.

Amerigas charges us 446.84 for propane. This is double what we have been paying our company before Amerigas bought them out. We called and they said they made a mistake (yeah right). They then dropped the bill down to 288.42 $ then proceeded to charge us 10.59 for Haz mat fee -t and 7.04 for fuel recovery fee---T and my new charges are 269.26. First of all Fuel recovery!!!! They are not recovering any fuel and the Haz mat fee--T really!!!! I see this is a regular practice for this company and they need to be stopped.

Got a letter in the summer of 2014 that my local propane provider had been taken over by Amerigas. I called in September for a fill up, and didn't ask the price per gallon because the local self serve price for propane was $1.99 a gallon so I figured about $3.00 a gallon for delivery. I also didn't know I was dealing with crooks. They didn't arrive until early October and charged $670.00 for 135 gallons. That's almost $5.00 a gallon. They are adding almost $3.00 a gallon to the price for delivery. A company that cared about their customers would have warned them that they had jacked up the price to double what it was a year ago. I am on social security and had to put this on a credit card. Shame on you Amerigas. I am changing to a local co-opp for my next delivery.

We have been customers of Rural Gas of Lakeview/Greenville MI for over 30 years, Amerigas bought them out a while ago and we decided to change our supplier to another company because we hadn't heard very good things about this new company and Rural Gas prices were always way higher than other companies. I called Amerigas out of Lakeview and told them to pick up the tank, which took almost 2 months before they showed up to pick it up. My husband was so upset because the tank set right in the middle of our parking space beside the house. Finally, they showed up to take the tank and then 2 weeks later, we receive a bill for $36.00 for picking up the tank. My husband says if anyone owes anything, we should charge them rent for leaving this tank set for 2 months in the middle of our parking space. What a corrupt company.
My husband went and talked with them explaining we had been customers for over 30 years and that we were not happy at all with this billing and besides, there had to be gas left in the tank for their time of picking it up. They said they would check it out and then two weeks later, we get a bill for $42.39 and again my husband called and tried to talk with them. What a rude customer service person he had. She even hung up on him. So now in the 2nd month of owing them, they have now sent us a bill for $78.39. Where in God's earth did these people come from and what kind of interest are they charging us? So this is the second notice we got and it has gone from $36.00 to $42.39 to $78.39 in 2 months??? They are now calling the $36.00 a late fee and who knows what the $42.39 is or the $78.39. Are they trying to get it up to over a $100.00 so they can turn it into a credit agency? We always pay our bills on time and have never had anyone be so rude and unwilling to compromise and work with us as a customer. Unbelievable......Would love to see a lawyer read all of these complaints and go after them, but when it is not a huge amount it probably doesn't seem worth their time. Stay away from AMERIGAS...... Not a good company.

Each year, I have to battle it out with Amerigas. I use a 100-gallon propane tank to fuel my fireplace. I was first told that so long as I purchase 50 gallons or more per year, the tank rental of $85 would be waived. Only later did they tell me it's 80 gallons. Except that they usually only fill the tank to around 80 percent. This year, they filled my tank to 79.5 gallons, so instead of putting $2 more of gas in my tank, they stopped short of the 80 gallons and sent me a bill for $85. Add to that, they charged me $4.97 a gallon when the government lists the current market price as $2.88 cents (difference of $2.08!).
Each year, I have to call and battle it out to get anything close to something fair. I've also asked them to take me off of automatic delivery. Instead, I get a delivery with no advanced notice and no warning of the price per gallon. My plan was to have them take the tank and switch to another provider. But now I have a tank full of their gas, and if I ask them to take it back, they'll only pay me a minimal price per gallon for the gas in the tank. When I tell other providers that I use Amerigas, I get a big sigh from them. It's a very difficult company to work with and super hard to switch. But this will be the last time Amerigas and I do a penny of business together.

We have been a customer of Schultz bottle gas for 28 years. In August they sold to Amerigas. We called in October for our propane tank to be filled. They arrived when we were at work. According to them, our tank was too close to our barn. They refused to fill it and disconnected it and put a lock on it without any notification. The tank has been in the same spot for 28 years and no one else ever said a word about it being too close to the barn. They refused to unlock it, even though the propane inside had been paid for. We wouldn't have minded having to move the tank if it wasn't up to code. But to immediately refuse us access to propane that we had already paid for is just plain mean. I'm waiting to see how long it takes them to come pick up their tank, because we won't be using them anymore.

My Restaurant has been doing business with Amerigas for 4 years. First let me say that I was ignorant for not catching this sooner, but I have learned a lesson in trust or lack thereof. I was approached by another gas company and when they shared their rate with me I nearly blew a gasket. I went back 10 fill-ups and my rate was a low (only once of $3.459 per). All the others were from $5.719 to a high of $6.159. I didn't go further back because I was sick enough. My current rate with the company I switched to is $1.69. That means I have been paying up to 3 1/2 times more than I should have. When told that I was switching they called me for the first time and offered me $1.99 to stay with them. Actually that made me madder because it shows that they could have given me a somewhat decent rate but since I didn't have the sense to continually check up and I don't feel I should have to. With that I will close. I just wanted to warn others of their criminal like practices. I could buy gas for the next two years with the difference I have been paying them.

I made an agreement with Michiana Gas who was later bought out by Amerigas. Amerigas said they would honor my previous arrangement but then when propane hit $3.20/gallon last winter (2014), they said they didn't have the proper paperwork needed to uphold the arrangement. I told them I would have difficulty paying as this was over a $1000 difference in price and that I'd pay month by month throughout the summer. They then went in to also charge me several months worth of late fees. I wish I could find another provider, they are money-grubbing mongrels.

I was asked to sign another contract for a higher price than I was quoted. I was not sure if I wanted to continue with Amerigas. They had merged with another company and kept coming out and delivering small amounts of gas, each with a HAZMAT fee attached. Then they delivered home heating gas in the summer. I did not open the bill as I assumed it was for the $99 for the guaranteed price. I did settle that bill. I can only hope that they actually delivered as no ticket was left in the door as was the usual with the last driver. Now I get another bill for the $99 with a $36.00 late fee. Since I am not require to lock in prices, I cannot imagine why they would charge a late fee. So done with this company. I am going to see if I can lodge a complaint with the Department of Public Utilities. Oh, if you need to call them, three days later, still no call back. I work nights, so staying up in the daytime is difficult.

Amerigas commonly sells a 20 pound or 5 gallon cylinders of propane at many gas stations. These cylinders are used for backyard bar-b-ques, heating lamps, or in RVs. Most consumers do not know how to do the math to understand how expensive and how intentionally deceptively Amerigas markets those cylinders. Although it is stated that they contain 15 pounds of propane, that weight of propane represents only 3.6 gallons of propane in a 5 gallon cylinder. So the cylinder is only 72% full. If you were to take your empty 5 gallon cylinder to a propane filling station, the average price per gallon of propane is $3.65. Therefore $3.65 x 3.6 gallons = $13.14. However Amerigas sells those 3.6 gallons of propane for $27.14, which is almost double the average price in the area. They may be providing a clean tank, but it is hardly worth double the price for the propane.
