In March of 2014 I called Amerigas to see if they could take me as a new customer. I spoke with gentleman named Mike. He was glad to help and I asked if I could be set up on auto delivery and monthly budget plan. He agreed and sent me papers to fill out and return. I did so as soon as I received them. They did not install the tank and gas until sometime in April. I heard nothing from them after that, so I called in the beginning of fall to make sure I was still on the auto delivery as I had never been set up on the budget plan. The lady I spoke with assured me that I was on the auto fill up, but did not know why I had not been on the budget plan. She also assured me that they had filled the tank at the time it was installed.
I kept waiting for the company to come and fill the tank in Dec, but heard nothing. I was getting low and believed they would fill it at any time. The gauged registered as 65%. On or around the 12th of the month I ran out of gas. I called to get it delivered and relayed to the lady what I had encountered and she stated that I had to pay in advance. It seems as tho my SS# had been put in incorrectly by someone in the company. I have excellent credit and told the lady that. She took my SS# again and checked. She apologized and said they would get the gas out as quickly as possible.
It took them three weeks to finally deliver, and if I had not seen the truck pass by my house, it may have been even longer. The day it was delivered I had a doctor appointment & was not here, so they put a lock on the tank so I could not use the gas. Now I have a tank full of gas with an inaccurate gauge that I can not use because it has been locked. I am 76 years old and that's the only heat I have in the back of my house.

Amerigas charges us 446.84 for propane. This is double what we have been paying our company before Amerigas bought them out. We called and they said they made a mistake (yeah right). They then dropped the bill down to 288.42 $ then proceeded to charge us 10.59 for Haz mat fee -t and 7.04 for fuel recovery fee---T and my new charges are 269.26. First of all Fuel recovery!!!! They are not recovering any fuel and the Haz mat fee--T really!!!! I see this is a regular practice for this company and they need to be stopped.

Got a letter in the summer of 2014 that my local propane provider had been taken over by Amerigas. I called in September for a fill up, and didn't ask the price per gallon because the local self serve price for propane was $1.99 a gallon so I figured about $3.00 a gallon for delivery. I also didn't know I was dealing with crooks. They didn't arrive until early October and charged $670.00 for 135 gallons. That's almost $5.00 a gallon. They are adding almost $3.00 a gallon to the price for delivery. A company that cared about their customers would have warned them that they had jacked up the price to double what it was a year ago. I am on social security and had to put this on a credit card. Shame on you Amerigas. I am changing to a local co-opp for my next delivery.

We have been customers of Rural Gas of Lakeview/Greenville MI for over 30 years, Amerigas bought them out a while ago and we decided to change our supplier to another company because we hadn't heard very good things about this new company and Rural Gas prices were always way higher than other companies. I called Amerigas out of Lakeview and told them to pick up the tank, which took almost 2 months before they showed up to pick it up. My husband was so upset because the tank set right in the middle of our parking space beside the house. Finally, they showed up to take the tank and then 2 weeks later, we receive a bill for $36.00 for picking up the tank. My husband says if anyone owes anything, we should charge them rent for leaving this tank set for 2 months in the middle of our parking space. What a corrupt company.
My husband went and talked with them explaining we had been customers for over 30 years and that we were not happy at all with this billing and besides, there had to be gas left in the tank for their time of picking it up. They said they would check it out and then two weeks later, we get a bill for $42.39 and again my husband called and tried to talk with them. What a rude customer service person he had. She even hung up on him. So now in the 2nd month of owing them, they have now sent us a bill for $78.39. Where in God's earth did these people come from and what kind of interest are they charging us? So this is the second notice we got and it has gone from $36.00 to $42.39 to $78.39 in 2 months??? They are now calling the $36.00 a late fee and who knows what the $42.39 is or the $78.39. Are they trying to get it up to over a $100.00 so they can turn it into a credit agency? We always pay our bills on time and have never had anyone be so rude and unwilling to compromise and work with us as a customer. Unbelievable......Would love to see a lawyer read all of these complaints and go after them, but when it is not a huge amount it probably doesn't seem worth their time. Stay away from AMERIGAS...... Not a good company.

Each year, I have to battle it out with Amerigas. I use a 100-gallon propane tank to fuel my fireplace. I was first told that so long as I purchase 50 gallons or more per year, the tank rental of $85 would be waived. Only later did they tell me it's 80 gallons. Except that they usually only fill the tank to around 80 percent. This year, they filled my tank to 79.5 gallons, so instead of putting $2 more of gas in my tank, they stopped short of the 80 gallons and sent me a bill for $85. Add to that, they charged me $4.97 a gallon when the government lists the current market price as $2.88 cents (difference of $2.08!).
Each year, I have to call and battle it out to get anything close to something fair. I've also asked them to take me off of automatic delivery. Instead, I get a delivery with no advanced notice and no warning of the price per gallon. My plan was to have them take the tank and switch to another provider. But now I have a tank full of their gas, and if I ask them to take it back, they'll only pay me a minimal price per gallon for the gas in the tank. When I tell other providers that I use Amerigas, I get a big sigh from them. It's a very difficult company to work with and super hard to switch. But this will be the last time Amerigas and I do a penny of business together.

We have been a customer of Schultz bottle gas for 28 years. In August they sold to Amerigas. We called in October for our propane tank to be filled. They arrived when we were at work. According to them, our tank was too close to our barn. They refused to fill it and disconnected it and put a lock on it without any notification. The tank has been in the same spot for 28 years and no one else ever said a word about it being too close to the barn. They refused to unlock it, even though the propane inside had been paid for. We wouldn't have minded having to move the tank if it wasn't up to code. But to immediately refuse us access to propane that we had already paid for is just plain mean. I'm waiting to see how long it takes them to come pick up their tank, because we won't be using them anymore.

My Restaurant has been doing business with Amerigas for 4 years. First let me say that I was ignorant for not catching this sooner, but I have learned a lesson in trust or lack thereof. I was approached by another gas company and when they shared their rate with me I nearly blew a gasket. I went back 10 fill-ups and my rate was a low (only once of $3.459 per). All the others were from $5.719 to a high of $6.159. I didn't go further back because I was sick enough. My current rate with the company I switched to is $1.69. That means I have been paying up to 3 1/2 times more than I should have. When told that I was switching they called me for the first time and offered me $1.99 to stay with them. Actually that made me madder because it shows that they could have given me a somewhat decent rate but since I didn't have the sense to continually check up and I don't feel I should have to. With that I will close. I just wanted to warn others of their criminal like practices. I could buy gas for the next two years with the difference I have been paying them.

I made an agreement with Michiana Gas who was later bought out by Amerigas. Amerigas said they would honor my previous arrangement but then when propane hit $3.20/gallon last winter (2014), they said they didn't have the proper paperwork needed to uphold the arrangement. I told them I would have difficulty paying as this was over a $1000 difference in price and that I'd pay month by month throughout the summer. They then went in to also charge me several months worth of late fees. I wish I could find another provider, they are money-grubbing mongrels.

I was asked to sign another contract for a higher price than I was quoted. I was not sure if I wanted to continue with Amerigas. They had merged with another company and kept coming out and delivering small amounts of gas, each with a HAZMAT fee attached. Then they delivered home heating gas in the summer. I did not open the bill as I assumed it was for the $99 for the guaranteed price. I did settle that bill. I can only hope that they actually delivered as no ticket was left in the door as was the usual with the last driver. Now I get another bill for the $99 with a $36.00 late fee. Since I am not require to lock in prices, I cannot imagine why they would charge a late fee. So done with this company. I am going to see if I can lodge a complaint with the Department of Public Utilities. Oh, if you need to call them, three days later, still no call back. I work nights, so staying up in the daytime is difficult.

Amerigas commonly sells a 20 pound or 5 gallon cylinders of propane at many gas stations. These cylinders are used for backyard bar-b-ques, heating lamps, or in RVs. Most consumers do not know how to do the math to understand how expensive and how intentionally deceptively Amerigas markets those cylinders. Although it is stated that they contain 15 pounds of propane, that weight of propane represents only 3.6 gallons of propane in a 5 gallon cylinder. So the cylinder is only 72% full. If you were to take your empty 5 gallon cylinder to a propane filling station, the average price per gallon of propane is $3.65. Therefore $3.65 x 3.6 gallons = $13.14. However Amerigas sells those 3.6 gallons of propane for $27.14, which is almost double the average price in the area. They may be providing a clean tank, but it is hardly worth double the price for the propane.

Our propane provider switched ownership several times here in S.W. Michigan until it finally became owned by Amerigas (the largest propane supplier in the US). I figured our prices should go down, since it had access to a lot of propane. This is completely wrong, however. Prices kept going up. We had no problems with delivery. But the price per gallon kept going up, and the lock-in fee kept going up. Also, we had issues with Amerigas not sending out a contract for locking in a price, etc. This happened several years. The company claimed it was sent, but I know we never rec'd it.
In any case, I decided to check competitor prices in 2011. This is not easy to do for propane. You typically must call each company and speak to a marketing person in order to get pricing info. The marketing person may not be available and must call you back. Rarely are prices given on websites (if they even have a website). And, there are typically several programs to chose from - making the pricing "quotes" confusing and difficult to compare.
But, after doing my homework, I found Amerigas to be way out of line with all the other competitors in our area in 2011. (All except Ferrell Gas, which is another company, along with Amerigas, recently charged with price gouging here in Michigan.) When I called to cancel my Amerigas account, the company offered to reduce my rate from $2.899/gal to $2.499/gal.-- a 40 cent reduction! This was not too far off from the norm, but I had found a better price at $2.329/gal (and having a much lower rate for the 1st fill.)
So, I decided to cancel my Amerigas account simply on the basis of the company's dishonesty. If they would have given me the $2.499 rate to begin with, I would not likely have changed suppliers (at that time). The price would have been a bit higher, but still within reason. It took awhile for Amerigas to pick up the old tank. But I called and told them that it was placed out at the curb, and they then picked it up promptly. This is likely because Amerigas would be liable for any accidental explosion etc. if a car ran into the tank. (If you are having difficulty in getting a company to pick up your old tank, I recommend this technique). My current supplier (E.M. Sergeant) has very stable pricing, and posts its prices online. This is a very different experience compared to Amerigas.

I am both surprised and disappointed by the lack of customer service I have received from Amerigas. There is absolutely no excuse for the disappointing customer service I have been shown by Amerigas. As a newer customer (of a 1,000 gallon fuel tank), I am extremely surprised how this company treats its customers. I purchased a home that had an existing tank- the prior homeowners used Amerigas so we decided to stay with the company. We set up a new account, signed a new agreement. We experienced our share of issues at first- incorrect billing (Billed $5.04 December 19, 2013 when it should have been $3.399), the tank going empty (February 7th), a driver not showing up when they said they would. Then another issue arose- a contractor working at our house mentioned the tank looked unstable.
I pulled the Amerigas agreement and found where it said the tank should have been inspected, so I call Amerigas to find the results of that inspection. No surprise, I am told an inspection was never completed on the tank. (Paperwork from Amerigas states Never did initial service call. Account was transferred into their name and gas was given to them.) We had the tank for over six months only to find out that an inspection should have been done on the tank when we started service. I requested the inspection be completed- and on January 21st, 2014 the results say: Service Check: Pressure test system ok. Call customer about replacing tank in summer. Tank in poor condition, needs replaced. Inform customer if any fees replaced, 1st stage regulator.
The service technician states that the 20+year old tank is becoming very unstable on the hillside where it resides. We were told that Amerigas would call and be out in the Spring to replace it- that never happened. I came home one day to find an invoice at my doorstep showing a driver had been by and completely filled up the tank, when in the Fall I was told they would only fill it to 30% to prepare for the swapping of the tanks. No one ever calls from Amerigas to take care of this. I finally called Amerigas and asked why the tank had not been replaced yet. A date was set of September 11th for Amerigas to come out and take care of the replacement. I receive a call THE MORNING OF the appointment only to be told that the tank is too full.
Again- I had to push- even after being told by Amerigas it needed to be replaced last fall- to have the tank drained and replaced before another winter came. The appointment was switched to September 16th. What happens on September 16th? Nothing. No one ever shows up, no one ever calls. AGAIN I call Amerigas questioning why no one ever showed up, no one ever called. I was told I would receive a call back. Two days later after STILL not hearing from anyone- and the tank still on the hillside- I ask to speak to a manager. Conveniently he is in a meeting, and I am now awaiting a call back. From the 16th- 19th- the three days that Amerigas showed me how important I was to them as a customer- I called Suburban Propane. I will not recommend anyone use Amerigas as there are better companies available to work with who actually care about their customers and the service they provide.

I rent my house and inherited Amerigas propane service. After a very expensive winter, nearly $6,000 in bills, I looked about and found another company that was almost $2.00 a gallon cheaper. I decided to make the switch in June. Amerigas was notified by my new company. It is now September and I've called twice to have the tanks picked up so that I can be reimbursed. I just did a google to find out what my options are and was aghast to see this website with 71 similar complaints. I am upset because I realize I will most likely not get my refund which I was counting on to pay the new company. What can we do? Anybody interested in a class action suit?

I was a customer of Amerigas. I terminated my service due to extremely poor performance and horrible pricing on June 20th 2014. At that time I requested that the company pick up my 500 Gallon tank which currently is 70% full. It is now September 9th, 2014 and the tank is still sitting on my front lawn, relocated several times because of a large construction project on our home. I have called the office no less than 10 times demanding they pick up the tank and refund me for the unused gas. Each time they promise to act immediately but do nothing. At this point I am prepared to file a legal complaint against Amerigas and pursue damages if this tank is not taken away. If necessary I will also move to legally seize ownership of the tank and sell it to recover my unused gas, a process which I can easily do in court when I also file for damages. This tank is not only a problem because it has to be constantly moved to avoid construction, it is also a severe safety risk.

I can't believe a National company acts this way. We own our own tank. It was installed years ago by the plumber we purchased the house from. Long, painful story short: My parents used Amerigas for a few years. 5 years after my father passed away, my kids and I moved in to take care of mom. Amerigas was supposed to fill the tank and bill monthly. They didn't, and the tank ran out. I called and they came out and filled the tank. The girl on the phone said the bill would be roughly $600.00. It was actually $1400.00. So, after I paid them off, I switched gas companies. I went through the hoops and showed where we owned the tank. The other gas company came out and put 150 gallons in the tank, and were going to come back in June when prices were down. Amerigas owed me (and still does) $1000.00, yet they claim I owe them. I even pulled our account information off of their own website. They owe me, and then they started asking for our private bank statements. No way.
So, somehow, they figured out who my new gas company was and sent them a letter claiming ownership of my tank. The company contacted me and I told them I would get a certified copy of the property plat, showing no easement or right to Amerigas. In the meantime, they brought a smaller tank so I would not be out of gas. They connected their new tank directly to the house line. And guess what? AFTER I told them specifically that I was not renewing the contract, and they had no right or permission to trespass on my property, Amerigas trespassed anyway and disconnected the tank that belongs to the other company. They were even stupid enough to leave a door tag. I am seriously considering filing suit. I won't be alone. There is NO WAY I would ever agree to the terms that Amerigas sent out. I paid no money, accepted no delivery and terminated per the old terms. No way I let this stand.

I see that Ann of Lancaster OH noted that AmeriGas prices "kept going up every year", so she switched to United Landmark at $2.19/gal. Interestingly I am doing the reverse, for exactly the same reason. Caveat Emptor: United Landmark told me that they offer new customers a 'teaser rate' for their first year contract that is roughly the equivalent to the summer price of propane, and that after this prices/contract rates are set to something close to the average market rate in the preceding year. This year, 2014, UL is asking existing customers $2.799/gal for contract - meaning, you will pay anything from market rate to $2.799/gal, depending on whichever is lower. During the winter last year, without a UL contract, I paid as much as $3.89/gal.
During research, I found that AmeriGas' price for new customers was $1.699/gal for their first fill, and their standard contract rate was $1.99/gal ... so on an apples-to-apples basis, UL vs AmeriGas standard rate, UL is ~29% more expensive than AmeriGas out of Columbus. Both companies offer Auto Fill arrangements, so they both use software to track your usage, the localized temperatures, and estimate on a monthly basis what level your tank is at, and determine whether to come out and top-it-up. We always have the ability, with both companies, to cancel auto-fill and go to will-call.
The catch is, with both, that if you run out of gas on will-call there is a fee to re-certify the pressure safety of the (now) empty tank before re-filling it. Both companies offer a budgeting/monthly-pay program to spread-out the cost of propane and avoid sudden lump-bills, and both companies will charge you for tank rental if you are not using at least the volume of one tank of gas per year - both essentially waive the tank rental if you use enough gas. At the outset the service offering are the same, and only the price differs, with UL being substantially higher than AmeriGas - so we'll see what my experience of AmeriGas turns out to be.

I do the amerigas exchange at the local 7-11. I hooked the propane tank up to my Weber grill and could hear gas escaping from the connection on the black hose/regulator. I also could smell gas. I used the dish soap and water to see where it was coming from and it was between the black plastic end that screws onto the tank and the silver regulator that is next to the black plastic. I assumed it was a faulty hose. Took it back to Home Depot and they gave me a new one. Same problem, though the leak not as immediately obvious. Slight gas smell and the soapy water test made the leak evident. I was frustrated and phoned Weber. They were going to send me another replacement hose when I questioned whether there could be something else going on: surprising coincidence to have two hoses leak in the same way.
She checked with her supervisor and asked me where I got the tank. When I told her it was a tank exchange from 7-11 (blue rhino or amerigas). She said her supervisor informed her they've heard of a lot of problems with those tanks. "90%" of the problems with leaking from regulator hose are due to problems with those propane tanks. I had a second tank available and I hooked the hose up to that one and no leak. This tank had what looked like a replacement brass nozzle as it was shiny and the rest of the tank looked a little older. If I hadn't done the soap test which I normally don't do when hooking up a new tank, there would have been a serious explosion. In this Weber grill model, the tank sits in an enclosed cabinet below the grill body and burner. To have the burner on and gas escaping below was a recipe for disaster. Amerigas must know of this problem!!

Also, Amerigas has not given me credit for my propane gas which company use to burn it for replacement of leakage valve on tank. This was before 18 Months ago & still today's date i.e. June 29th, 2014 I haven't received any credit for that. I have several times mentioned in office & also had conversation to DIST. I live in the rural Lancaster, Ohio area and had been an Amerigas customer for several years with no problems. But over the past couple years, their prices were way out of line with other companies and their customer service became non-existent. They were delivering gas all year round (even in the spring when I had already turned the A/C on!) and the prices kept going up each time they delivered. The last straw came when I called this past January 4th to ask for a delivery and was told it would be delivered within 4-5 days, which was good as we were down to 30% in the tank.
Two weeks later and no gas and we were seriously approaching an empty tank. I called again and got Marcus, who told me there was no way I was told a 4-5 delivery time frame. It would be up to 3 weeks cause there was a shortage. And the cost would be over $4/gallon. Marcus continued to talk over me the entire time, not listening to anything I said. So I asked to speak to a manager and Marcus replied that "it would just be a courtesy to let me talk to a manager". By this time I was furious, but he finally connected me with someone who was supposedly a manager.
This person was also rude and basically told me the same thing - that I was wrong about being told a 4-5 day delivery time. So..... at that point I was done with Amerigas. I called Landmark and got a tank set and fill-up (at $2.19/gallon!!) within 4 days and couldn't be happier. Oh, and I've called Amerigas repeatedly to get their tank removed from my yard. They have missed 4 appointments (no show - no call) and now they are supposed to show up tomorrow, but I'm sure they won't and I'll be making my 7th phone call to them. I'm tempted to put a "for sale" sign on their d*mned tank and see what happens when they drive by my house!

We have an Amerigas tank buried outside (not optional upon move-in). Every year the prices are atrocious. If you don't use the gas, they still charge you to rent the tank b/c it's THEIR tank. When we actually used the gas during the winter time, the rates were crazy expensive. It ranged from $600-$1000 each fill. We haven't been using any gas for the past 2 years so then they decide to charge you to rent the tank. The last invoice we received said 'gauge broken'. So don't they need to come fix it since it's THEIR tank and equipment?? The tank must be leaking or something b/c they still come to fill it up 2-3 times a year. It's anywhere from $100-300 each time and we're not even using it anymore!! How does that work??? We're thinking about having the tank removed. Does anyone know how much that costs? It's underground. Thanks in advance for any input.

Buyer beware. Of course, if you are like the tens of thousands of people who have no other option than to do business with this monopoly, watch them like a hawk. Drivers are on incentive-based deliveries (commission) and in just two years we have already had two major incidents: (1) billing for fuel delivery that was NEVER delivered (that one required threatening the CEO in order to resolve it), and (2) delivery of UNWANTED fuel because drivers aggressively deliver fuel when they have explicitly been told NOT to (company refuses to remove customers from *automatic delivery*, thereby guaranteeing themselves a regular flow of revenue - especially when fuel rates are highest - by delivering fuel whether customers want it or not).

I recently visited my mother Kathy **, a 78 years old senior citizen, in Fredericksburg VA and while looking over her bills discovered that amerigas has been billing her at $4.49 per gallon and her propane bill has been over $2000.00 per month during past several months. After checking with friends and other propane companies, the market rate was $2.89-$3.39 per gallon which means she has been over paying by $1.00/gallon at 500 gallon tank equates to $500/ month. Her monthly bill used to be $1000/mo in winter months but have been paying $1000.00 more in the past 5 months!! How can a senior citizen afford this?? This is price gauging and taking advantage of an elderly woman over the period of several months.
I initiated my complaint to the local office on 4/8th with the phone agent who was argumentative, combative, rude and refused to listen to my request and complain, thus asked to speak to a supervisor. I had to leave messages for her with follow up calls on 4/17, 4/18, 4/21 and 4/22, finally requested to speak to the GM. This also took 2 follow up calls as well. The customer service experience has been atrocious, I had to do all the follow up calls. There were no call recording nor monitoring, no direct numbers to contact the supervisor nor manager, it is horrifying that this is how a publicly held company treat the customers. Price gauging and taking advantage of the elderly is unethical and NOT acceptable!

I had questions about those charges and they charge late fees of $36. I used to have Coast Gas in Ft Pierce and they were great - but they were bought out by Amerigas. Their service is terrible and they are thieves. I would recommend AGAINST anyone using this company.

We got Amerigas. What a mistake. They said yearly propane tank rent was $66 a year. By the first tank refill they said, "We won't deliver any propane unless you pay for the 142 gallons in advance." The bill came to over $500 before delivery. When they finally came to fill the tank, the tank took less gallons that they charge. They owe us $71 that they never send back. By the second year, they send us a bill for yearly tank rent of $108 dollar almost double. We call to complain and the woman that answer the phone was ask the monthly yearly charge. She said $66 dollars. We asked why then we are charge $108, she has no answer.
We decided to call another company and they emptied their tank. When we called to have it pick up they said will be a charge of $39.99 to pick it up. To make the story short, out of the $71 dollars that they owe us they sent back $13 dollars claiming some shady accounting that they probably made up and is very difficult to understand essentially ripping you off. A few days later they sent after the account suppose to be closed a notice of REVISED TERMS AND CONDITIONS OF AMERIGAS Propane, essentially a legal jargon threaten and inform you they can do whatever they want and you have no legal grounds to stand on. No stars deserving.

I was shocked to receive my bill last month, it was over 500. I live alone and yes, I know the winter was cold, but I keep my apartment so that I am warm with a sweater and blanket while watching tv. I called to discuss my charges and they told me there was nothing they could do. They would not come and check my meter or anything. I made a partial payment of 300 and this month, my bill was over 400. You have to be kidding me.......this past month was not nearly as cold as the previous month.
I called to discuss and make payment arrangements. They will not check my meter or make payment arrangements and are threatening disconnection. As I live in an apartment complex, this means eviction proceedings will start. I feel like they are putting a gun to my head. In the past my bills were in the vicinity of 200 per month during the winter months. How could they be allowed to be in business with these strong arm tactics?

I was on a budget plan with Amerigas 151.00 a month. I was getting automatic deliveries. Then this past week we ran out of propane. I called them up and they told me I owe them 3200. I told them I was on the budget plan and they said because of me getting more propane usually I owe more. They did only send 50 gallons which was a joke. When I called the local office they said no more deliveries until I pay off the 3200. I told them "was someone going to let us know about the bill higher?" I offered to pay 500 and they said, "You still won't get propane unless you pay upfront." They should have reworked my budget so this would not have happened.

Amerigas started out being friendly via the phone but ended up being a bunch of thieves. My husband was given a propane tank prior to our involvement and when I moved in and had children we decided to do the delivery system instead of having to haul it out and undo and redo it however often. We had an astronomical bill the first year and then the second it wasn't so bad. Until I received a bill for a rental fee. I ignored the bill thinking it was an oversight because the woman on the phone was going to waive the fee for not ordering our amount in the 12 months. Well that was the first lie, the charge was still there.
Then I called left a message and never received a call back. Got the second bill and at this time we needed a refill so I wanted to dispute the bill. They refused to refill while the bill was under dispute so we had brought it out ourselves and filled it. Come March 25th, 2014 our propane is out. We don't think anything of it because I did not know my husband refilled the tank. So I didn't say anything. Well I called Amerigas to dispute the claim and put an order in. I said we own our own tank and that I've never had to pay a rental fee prior so I was not paying for my own tank. She explained I had paid a fee the year before in the huge bill. Which when looking at the bill was listed under other (so I wouldn't know it was a rental fee).
I argued that if they look in their records there was no installation. No tank was installed and the tank was inspected and passed our first fill up. She then got defensive and rude. So I had to call the police and file a complaint against the company because no one took me seriously. The worst part is my three year old and my unborn child are the ones to suffer since this has all happened because we are limited on our meals since we have no way to cook them!

Needed Amerigas to deliver propane as I was out (i.e. no heat) in Dec. Made arrangements for delivery on a Tues. Was told driver would call when he was on his way. Finally, after waiting around the house all day for delivery (and didn't think I needed to make other arrangements), I finally called Amerigas at 4:25pm. I was initially told the driver had a personal issue and was unable to make the delivery. A call back to them a few minutes later, I was given a different reason - vehicle trouble this time. (One of those two reasons was a lie.) The end result was my family spent a cold winter night without heat because of Amerigas. Upon changing propane service providers, I was charged a $35 pick-up fee for the tank (plus any de-fueling fees). Because I didn't pay that bill on time, Amerigas charges $35 additional as a late fee - EVERY month.

On January 9, 2014 I saw an AmeriGas truck stop for less than four (4) minutes near the front of my home where the propane tank is located. I ran upstairs, put on a shirt and ran back downstairs. By the time I opened by door to go outside and speak with the driver, the truck was leaving. It took me less than four minutes after I saw the truck coming down the street to run upstairs put on a shirt, come back downstairs to open my door and go outside. My wife was upstairs and saw the AmeriGas truck when it pulled up and park briefly. She was upstairs in the master bathroom located on the front of our home which has a door to the front balcony. When I ran upstairs my wife asked me had I seen the AmeriGas truck pull up and I said yes and was going outside to speak with the driver.
I was outside less than four minutes and the truck was leaving as I opened the door. I received no notice whatsoever on my door of an AmeriGas delivery. However, a couple of days later, I received a bill of $336.27 for 54.1 gallons of propane gas. It would have been impossible for a person to stop the truck, get out the truck, walk over to my propane gas tank, put the hose in, pump 54.1 gallons of propane gas, put the hose back on the truck, get in the truck and leave in less than four minutes! I just knew some type of mistake had occurred so I called the AmeriGas Holly Hill office and spoke with an office person.
She attempted to convince me that 54.1 gallons of propane gas could be put in a tank less than four minutes. I had my lawyer send a letter; thus far we have not received any response from AmeriGas. On Tuesday, I received a call with a threat to cut off my propane gas service. Even since AmeriGas has taken over my account from Heritage Propane, I have been ripped off my this company. I was charged a couple hundred dollars for a repair that was never done; a part was supposed to had been ordered a couple of months ago has never been put in. My experience with AmeriGas has been a disaster!

We have been customers of Flamegas for over a decade now going on 15 years. The billing has always been a little confusing. Handwritten bills placed on doorknobs, Payments cross in the mail. We pay monthly throughout the entire year and at times pay lump sums to catch up on the heavy months. It has worked this way for years. We never carried a balance for long and have ALWAYS paid. Recently that company was bought out by Amerigas.
We came home today in the middle of winter to an empty tank. I immediately called and was told it wasn't filled due to lack of payment. Despite my frustration with the fact that they were suddenly ignoring the way we had worked for years past, I paid the entire balance over the phone without even verifying that their information was correct. I just wanted heat for my family during the predicted snowstorm. I was told that a truck was going to be there that night to fill the tank. Their tactics were successful.
However, within 10 minutes I received a call back from Amerigas stating that the manager of the local Amerigas office was refusing to fill our tank until the following Monday - two days later. I asked to speak to a manager and was told one would call me. Within a few minutes a snide lady called and confirmed that the order would not be processed by the local branch until Monday. I asked her how her conscience could allow her to let my family freeze for the next two days when we had an on-going keep full agreement. She said, “Sorry, enjoy your gas on Monday”, and ended the conversation.
So now they have my payment in full (which I would have paid on the next billing cycle anyway) and refuse to honor their autofill agreement. This is truly Amerigas. It's how they work. It's their true ethical footprint. These are the kind of practices that directly lead to deeper regulation in our countries industries. Our beautiful free market system must now be heavily monitored because of greedy, dishonest practices.
This is not a comfort product. Heat keeps people from dying in freezing temperatures. Companies like this cannot be trusted to provide the essential needs of people they care nothing about. As individuals, it seems the most we can do is change to a different company - a local company. I've already left a message for a competing company in my area to call me on Monday. As unsatisfying of a recourse as it seems, at least I won't see my hard earned money going to continue to fund what could arguably be called 'evil' business practices. They certainly seem evil tonight as I watch my four children shiver under blankets.

When asked why their rates are so different from area to area, only two miles different, they can't give us an answer. One neighbor was charged $5.01, another two miles down the road was charged $4.99, we were charged $4.26. What is going on with this company? We still can't get a rate to buy our tank but was informed that if or when we do, the rate per gallon will be $2.76. What??? This is because then they will need to compete with other companies charging $2.99 per gallon. This is insane. I lifted the lid on my propane tank to check to see how much I had left. I got a strong smell of propane. It was a cold morning and the air was still. I took my bill into the office and told them my percentage of propane. I told them of the strong smell and thought it was probably because of the cold air. The Amerigas told me they would send someone out that day to check it. Sure enough there was a leak. My tank was 40+ years old so I was told they would bring me a new tank Wed. Wed. came and went, no new tank. I called the office and they told me it would be the next week. No one told the delivery man because he came out to deliver propane to my new tank, much to his surprise, no tank!
Amerigas came out the next week with the new tank. Because of the difference in size and age there were many changes made to get the new tank to fit. When the driver went to move the old tank, he forgot to remove the copper cable that goes into the fitting that goes into the ground. OOPS! He set the tank back on the ground and released all the cables. He physically pushed the pipe back into the ground and pushed the dirt in place with his feet. The new tank was put in place. I had 7+ percent of propane in my old tank and less than 5% in the new tank. They came out that day and put in 100 gal.
A week later we shut the house down to go to southern CA for Christmas. We were down there one week. I was in the shower and ran out of hot water. Didn't think anything about it until I walked by the propane stove and saw there was no pilot light! I Called Amerigas on Mon. and told them we obviously have a leak. They sent out their service man the next day. I told him he should start looking at the pipe where the cable had been pulled from the old tank, he agreed. Sure enough, he started digging and got about six inches down and the smell of propane reeked! When he reached the broken pipe, it spewed propane. He fixed it, we were delivered another 100 gal.
A few days later I went into the office to square away the bill for the 100 gal. we lost. Amerigas told me they were going to give me a 20-gal credit! I had made up my mind not to get upset. I told her, "If you look up my past usage of propane you will see that my average for the winter is 100 gal a month, not two weeks." She again told me they were ready to give me 20 gal credit. I told her no. She asked me what I had in mind. I told her 50 gal. She told me absolutely not. Then she said they would give me 40 gal credit. Again, I did not want to get upset, or raise my voice so I said okay. I felt totally taken advantage of.
Amerigas caused my problem, caused me to go without propane, heat and hot water and now were gouging me to pay for propane that evaporated into the air! Now I have been out of gas for three + days because I didn't call soon enough for delivery. Amerigas is doing their business merge! Good for them. Here in Walker we have always been able to call the first of the week to get delivery by Friday! ** I call their office and because they are remodeling (?) you cannot get customer service. The guy came in and asked me if I wanted him to take the old stove away. Of course I was delighted. He then told me that if the new stove was not prepared for propane...they would have to order the kit and it would take MORE TIME. I actually cried. Within 20 minutes, he hooked up the stove. He then gave me a story that he could not take the other stove away because it was too heavy???? Then he told me he could not put the new stove in place because it was not level. Then he proceed to give me a bill for $178.00 (which we were NEVER informed of ahead of time).
Of course all of his excuses were just that, excuses. When my husband came from work, he rolled the old stove out just as easily as he rolled the new one in. When he proceeded to roll the new one into place it was absolutely level, but we now saw that the technician had installed a big pipe back there which keeps the stove from going against the wall by about 5 inches. He also left the top off the tank outside.
I have been calling them to no avail. I am on hold as I write this note. I wish companies would appreciate consumers' business. Things are so much more difficult today and we all work so hard. All these companies have all kinds of "caring" messages while you waiting on hold for lengthy periods of time. They are always expressing how "customer service" is first and foremost on importance. The worst part, we cannot CHOOSE another company. And yet monopoly is illegal???

My experience with Amerigas started out fine, and ended up pretty badly. They still haven't managed to fix the issue. Most recently, my heating unit, which is fueled by their propane gas, had not been working. I thought it was my unit itself, but after much troubleshooting and having it examined, we realized the issue was with the gas tank that Amerigas had installed. It was not releasing gas at all. I have called them 7 times and never heard a response back. I always got false promises about a "Service Manager" calling me back, but it has been nearly a week now since I contacted them and no response. They don't care. It's as simple as that. My house has now not had heat for over 2 weeks and it's been one of the coldest winters the Raleigh/Durham area has seen in a while.
Prior to this, I called Amerigas well before my tank was empty, to fill up with gas, and they took over a week to get the gas to me. By that time, my gas had run out. I called when I thought it was appropriate to do so, and they just took their sweet time. Not only that, they billed me incorrectly. I had paid some money to get a fixed rate, and they have billed me much more. Terrible gas company. They have no sense of responsibility when it comes to their customers. I have now bought a whole house electric heater which works really well and am ditching the gas all together. It comes out cheaper than their EXPENSIVE gas, which they had mentioned was the cheapest (it really isn't). If you absolutely have gas needs, please go to any other company than them. They just don't care, and as you can see by all of the reviews, others have had bad experiences as well.
PS. If Amerigas is reading this, there is still a chance to revive my business. I haven't completely cancelled my services with them and can still return my whole home heater. I'm pretty sure they don't care to read these reviews, but better I inform others so they don't make the same mistake I did.

This is not the first time this has happened. The gas started leaking overnight and was noticed at 7 am when my husband smelt it. We were on hold waiting for time frame the technician will be out because of the gas leak, and the customer service representative reminded us that we needed to make a payment. We could have died and we were reminded that we owe a payment. Really? Yet it took over 2 days to get someone to house to cap the leak because their technician was on vacation.
After several phone calls and having to become downright nasty, they agreed to get a technician from another office, otherwise we would have had to wait a week and a half. Why do they push us to become nasty? Good thing it was in the summer because I had to use my gas grill to cook because the gas was tagged out. AmeriGas is the worst I have ever had the misfortune of dealing with. I called to have my tank refilled on November 11th, 2013 and was told they would be out sometime that week to fill it up. On Thursday the 15th, we called again to make sure they hadn't forgotten (which has happened numerous times before). We were told they would be out on Friday the 16th. Well, no one came to fill our tank. I called again on Monday the 18th and was told that they had no record of us calling the first time on 11th, but they did have a record of us calling on the 15th. Again, this is not the first time this has happened. They said they would be out sometime on the week of the 15th. By Wednesday the 20th, we were out of propane, so I called Texas Star Propane and a mere 5 hours later, they had removed the AmeriGas tank, put in their tank, filled it with propane, and lit my pilot light. Texas Star Propane accomplished ALL that in 5 hours - compare that with AmeriGas which after a week and a half and 3 calls, they still hadn't filled my tank.
But that isn't the end. On November 20th, we called AmeriGas to come pick up their tank, and were told it would be 4-5 weeks before they could come pick it up. All they would tell us is that it is peak season and all of their drivers are busy. It is now January 14th, 4 weeks after we told them to pick up their tank. I just got off the phone with them and now they are saying they won't be able to pick up their tank until sometime in February. I spoke with the manager of the Pinehurst location, and I asked her for a corporate customer service number. She said the number was nothing more than a complaint hotline, and the complaint would be routed back to her. Basically, I'm getting nowhere with these people. Our homeowners' association is complaining about the tank, and if we are fined, I told AmeriGas the bill would be going to them.
Do not do business with these people, they are a joke. I highly recommend Texas Star Propane - they are courteous, prompt, less expensive than AmeriGas, and they know how to run a business.

I had a gas leak in my vacation house in the Poconos area of PA. I called AmeriGas they told me how to turn the gas off and they'd send someone out that same day. So far so good. AmeriGas came out discovered the leak and told me it was not their responsibility. Fine. I had the driver describe the problem to my service provider who was coming out to fix the problem. What the driver did not tell me or them was that he had locked my tank, so that I could not turn my heat back on.
We discovered this after the driver left. I called AmeriGas to unlock my tank and was told all the drivers were busy so it would be 2-3 weeks! What?! Mind you this is January in the Northeast. I told them that this was absolutely ridiculous. All of my pipes would freeze and there was no need to lock it in the first place since he knew I turned it off at the tank had someone coming out immediately to fix it. After asking to speak to several managers, I got some officious customer service rep type, who kept repeating like a mantra. “Sir if we don't lock the gas there could be an explosion (or something to that effect)” No kidding. I told her that you only needed to turn off the gas at the tank which was done by me and double checked by their driver.
There was no need to lock it and it made no sense to do so, since that would prevent me from turning my heat back on and also made it more difficult for service person and more expensive for me and I was expected to wait three weeks for heat in the middle of winter? Are they kidding? Finally after much complaining and asking to speak to managers hoping to find someone with common sense, I was told that they would send someone out the same day if I paid $238.
Extortion! They had no business locking my tank and costing me all this money. If they are going to lock tanks as a precaution rather than just turning off the gas then they need to have drivers available to unlock them immediately once the homeowner fixes the problem. I am going to speak to my homeowners association about finding a different provider. Believe everything you read in these posts. If you have them now terminate them. If your neighborhood is considering them, fight to keep them out. This is just a bad company.

I chose this company because they were a smaller company and were about the customer. I never had any issues with them whatsoever, they were really extremely friendly (especially May). Then Amerigas bought them out and everything changed after that. Long story short, Amerigas made an automatic propane delivery to which I thought was entirely too soon considering we recently took note that we had 60% of propane left in our tank. I called and requested them not to make anymore automatic deliveries because I wanted to keep track of the usage myself. I even spoke to the manger in the Allentown, PA branch and explained to him that I wanted the auto-delivery to cease. Who is to say that they delivered what you are charged? It's their word against yours!
Then 2 weeks later, we got another delivery despite me telling 2 people to take me off auto-delivery! I held off paying mainly because I was travelling for work and wanted to call and discuss this with them. A few weeks later, I received an automated voice recording that our bill was overdue and that I needed to contact Amerigas. Instead of contacting them, I just paid the bill online and was going to contact them when I had some spare time (If I'm not traveling somewhere I leave the house from 6:30 am to 6:30 pm for work, 5 days a week).
Two days following the online payment I made (paid in full), we came home from work one night to find our Propane tank was disconnected and locked. I immediately contacted them and they told me that they didn't realize that I paid online and they sent someone out to lock our tank. Mind you, this was with NO notice whatsoever, no phone call, no letter stating that our tank would be locked in X amount of days, nothing! Then to make matters worse, they refused to send someone out to unlock our tank. We had no hot water, no stove and no heat!
They told us that when they come out the next day that someone needs to be there! So we should take off work because they locked us out?!?! No one was home when they locked the tank on us in the first place! Today, we bought our tank outright from them and this is the last dime they will ever get from us! I've never been so angry with a company in my entire life as I am with Amerigas!

Amerigas picked up my propane tank May 2013. They have not refunded my partial tank rental or gas that was remaining in the tank. I was a 15-year client of Manley Gas. Manley Gas also had their issues. I kept a credit card on file with them, yet they would still charge me late fees. I would have to take time out of my day and call them and ask, "How can I be late if I have a credit card on file with you?" They would blame it on their billing/computer system then credit me back the late fee for next time I needed a fill up. Then next time I filled up, there would be another late fee. This went on the last 2 years I was their customer.
In May 2013, I called my Manley Gas man to put gas in my tank and he said that Amerigas had bought out Manley and he no longer worked for them, and I would need to call the office. I did call the office right away and they told me it would be at least 10 days before they could come out, they were behind on deliveries. I could NOT wait that long so I called another gas company. The gentleman from the NEW company I called said he could come out in a few hours and put a little gas in and keep me from running out (Friday) and get me a NEW tank in 5 days.
I decided right then, the gentleman from the NEW company would be my gas man. I was told there was about 15 gallons left in the old Manley tank. He added 20 so I would not run out. He ended up having an opening on Sunday afternoon and brought my NEW tank. So there were about 35 gallons in the old Manley tank. I contacted Manley/Amerigas on Monday and told them to pick up their tank. I no longer want their service and want to be reimbursed for the gas & tank rental. Once I noticed they picked up the tank, I contacted Manley/Amerigas. They promised I will have a check in 6 weeks. This was May 2013.
After 6 weeks and NO check, I contact them again... They claim to escalate my case and I should have a check in 6 weeks. In July 2013, Amerigas hires Lee ** as their Manager. I contact Lee. He then claims there was NO gas in the old tank. I ask him to contact my new gas man! I have proof I paid for the gas too! Lee claims he won't contact a competitor. I offer to do a 3-way call, Lee declines. Lee then decides I'm telling the truth, and will only refund 25 gallons (I only have a gas water heater & gas heat) at the cheaper rate of $2.49, not the $2.60+other fees I paid Manley in January 2013.
In July, Lee promises me I will have my check in 6 weeks. I contact him the end of August 2013 because I still haven't gotten my refund. He promises me I will get my refund on October 1st 2013, to just be patient. I have 2 papers showing I have a "Credit" with Amerigas, still NO refund check. I go in person to Amerigas October 2nd 2013 and meet and talk with Mr. ** in person. He is very sorry I haven't gotten my check, makes a phone call and now promises I'll have my check in 6 weeks (first part of November 2013). I don't have much confidence in this "Promise" due to the PAST "promises". This is VERY unprofessional. It's like if we keep avoiding the situation, maybe she will forget and we can keep the money.

We started with Amerigas in the Temecula office in 2008. At first, everything went well enough. We had a rented tank, ran about $80 per year. After the first couple of years, our account was transferred to the Ramona office for deliveries. Six months later (in Sept.), we received a bill for the yearly tank rental. We had already paid our yearly tank rental to the Temecula branch (as always) six months prior (in March). We had to call numerous times, and the staff at the Ramona branch were completely rude. Finally, the Temecula branch called the Ramona branch and explained their error, and the charges were reversed.
In March of the following year, we received our regular bill for tank rental from our Temecula office. We paid it. The following September, we received another "tank rental bill" from the Ramona office. We called and tried to explain it again, and the nastiness of their reps and the manager caused us to call the main branch. We got the run around from them as well. Finally, we called the Temecula branch and were told that our account was being transferred back to that office, but by that time I was disgusted with the entire company and cancelled our service. I requested they pick up the tank and send us a final bill showing we owed "$0" and that the account was closed. Took them 2 months to pick up the tank, but they finally did, and we received the final bill showing account closed with no balance due.
In March of the following year, we again received a bill from the Ramona branch for tank rental! Even though the Temecula branch was the only one that ever delivered a tank, and they had picked their tank up! We called the main office, and got a runaround. We called back and explained the error, and were told someone would have to "look into it" and would call back. No one ever did. When we received another billing with a late fee, we wrote a letter to the main office with all the backup paperwork enclosed to show we owed nothing, and that our account was closed. Again, that was ignored.
Now we have received a bill from a collections company for the tank rental plus late fees - all on an account that doesn't exist and for a tank that THEY HAVE! There really should be a way to take them to court for harassment when they continue to ignore all the facts and just bill for whatever they want. Anyone want to start a class action lawsuit? Any attorneys out there interested?

Minetto/Oswego NY office - One thing I have discovered about Amerigas is that they just don't care what their customers think. I avoid talking to them because their attitude is so condescending and arrogant that just calling for a balance ruins my entire day. So here's my story - hopefully someone can learn from it.
I have been a customer of Amerigas in Syracuse, NY for 2 years and have been unhappy from the start. Unfortunately, I live in a rural part of the state and they are the only game in town. For the entire two years, I have received one bill... yes, just one. They have been charging me, of course, just not billing me. I have complained many times. I have been setup on a paperless billing scheme which I don't want. I've asked many times to be taken off the paperless billing as it appears the bill is removed from the email server somewhere. My assumption is the server sees it as spam and removes it because I have yet to see it. This has been going on for two years.
Fast forward to today. I have been disconnected for "non-payment" even though I just paid $1000 less than 3 weeks ago. I called and again we went through the same process that always happens when I call. There is no resolution to the billing issue and they tell me it will be a week before they can turn me back on plus they want $175 reconnect fee. There are no apologies, just arrogant, sarcastic and condescending answers. This is absolutely the worst customer service I have ever dealt with. It's even worse than the companies who outsource their customer service to India.

We were customers of Heritage Propane for many years and experienced good service and pricing. AmeriGas is now the provider and we found that our first bill was fair and we were happy to do business with them. However, we called to fill our tank, only to find that the price had more than doubled. Today's price was $4.97 per gallon when we paid half that amount only a few months ago. When we called to inquire about the cost, they wouldn't tell us the price per gallon. Then we had to give them our address and, after much aggravation, they quoted a price that was 45 cents less than the first price quoted of $4.97. It costs less to put gas in our car. There is no competition in Spring Hill and we believe they are charging whatever the public will bear. Our question is, "why is propane so expensive?"

I have been an AmeriGas customer for over 10 years. Without any advance notice, they started billing a yearly tank rental fee of $90, whether you use gas or not. Other local propane suppliers do not do this. So I closed the account, but they refused to remove the tanks. Only after 4 phone calls and a certified letter did they finally remove the tanks (after six months). Then they send a bill for a yearly tank rental for tanks I do not have anymore. They did eventually cancel all charges after many complaints. I will never use this company again.

I hate Amerigas! Seriously! We went with them a little over 3 years ago when we bought our house. We have had nothing but problems! They suggested we do a monthly payment plan where we would pay a certain amount for 12 months, and at the end of the year, we would “probably” get money back. Wrong! We ended up having to pay over $1,000 at the end of the year. That was enough to piss me off right there, but of course, we were in a 2-year contract. So 4 months ago, I get a random bill for $99. I called the 800 # a few times - nothing. Finally, I get a hold of someone, tell them I don't want to sign up for the certain program, and they say okay and tell me they will clear my account. So since then, every month, I have been getting a late fee bill tacked on to the $99 that I don't owe.
I called the Bellaire office many times, where a certain lady told me she would fix it. Next month comes, and it’s not fixed (with another charge). I call her again. She is super bitchy to me and says, “You didn't talk to me. I would have taken care of that.” I was like “Yes, I did! I remember your name being MJ. That is not a common name.” She threw big attitude at me and was like “Well, it wasn't me, but I guess I will have to stay late and take care of this issue for you.” I was like “Please! I have only been dealing with this for 4 months now!” So I just got a flippin' call at 9pm from an automated message saying I need to call some credit claims ** tomorrow because of Amerigas! So fed up! I already told them as soon as our tank gets to 10%, we are switching! Ugh! Seriously! Stay away from Amerigas!

Pick a different LP Gas company. I was with Amerigas for over 8 years and was very happy until they kept automatically billing me for a price lock in rate at a cost of $112. That started me checking into alternate pricing, and I found out I was paying about .21 cents a gallon more than the other companies in my area for that same time period. That was the other company's regular price on a call when you need gas basis, not a new customer price or approved credit keep full price. As I used about 1200 gallons during that period the extra expense was quite high, and that did not include the $112 price guaranteed price contract.
I notified them in July I would not be continuing as a customer and would call them when my tank was down to 5%. They not only did not record that I was no longer accepting gas, in October they tried to fill my tank and I caught the driver in the yard and refused the load and asked them to make sure they knew I cancelled. When we were away in November they filled the tank anyway. Which made it very difficult to get it down to 5%.
When I asked them to pick up their tank they said there would be a 100$ charge to pick up their tank. They said the company issued new rules September 21st 2011 adding this charge. Note that a) this was 3 months after I notified them I was discontinuing service, b) not mailed to me, and c) nothing I agreed to. It amounted to extortion. I could either have paid them a 75$ pump out charge and had them take the tank immediately (if I had even known about their new policy) or I could pay 100$ to have them pick up the tank.
The new company I went to charges a tank removal charge if you change companies in less than a year which I feel is very reasonable. After 8 years of service it was not, neither was the underhanded way they add charges without informing customers. I found that customer service had long periods of being on hold (an indicator of a large number of problem calls), and when you did get a customer service rep the only tried to keep you as a customer (customer retention specialist) not resolve your issue.
When I asked to speak to a supervisor he simply read the paragraph from the new company policy adopted September 28, 2011 three months after I told them i was discontinuing service. They has no interest in understanding my concerns.

This is for Ms. Barbara. You probably don’t remember me, but we attended Briarcliffe College together in '05. You recruited me as a customer. I have been satisfied with AmeriGas Service for all these years until this week. It was surprising to me that when I called today to get the name of the person I spoke with on Wednesday, it was you. I called in frustration because of how my account was handled. And your response to my distress was nothing short of a hostile.
You may recall, there was a dispute on my account for services rendered. Your company billed me for 2 tanks when in fact, I had only received one. Your systems told you I received two. But looking at my tanks as I did, I had only one full. The other was empty. Rather than working through the dispute, you chose to be aggressive towards me. You started with a bad attitude the second you noticed my account was disconnected. Your aggressiveness mounted and you accused me of tampering with my tanks when I wasn't. I simply looked at them. I saw they were disconnected. I left them alone then called your service. When I tried to tell you this, you didn't believe me. I later talked about how to offer better customer service by offering a courtesy call to people in my scenario 24-48 hours prior to disconnect. You felt that wasn't necessary as mailings had been sent to my home. Whether or not those mailings were sent or received, a call prior to disconnect would have been courteous of a company valuing their customers.
During our conversation, your aggressive manner only flamed my frustrations, making the call to get my service reconnected extremely unpleasant. I left you with "I will call you back when I am ready to terminate", then hung up. Later that afternoon, I was going to call back and speak to hopefully a more pleasant representative. But I found that my tanks had been removed from my house. I called AmeriGas at 8:15 this morning . I spoke with a very helpful and pleasant representative named Shantelle, with your 24-hr. service hotline. She informed me that I canceled my account. I told her, "No I didn't," because I didn't. You took it upon yourself to close my account. Then, you noted a flat out lie that I requested termination when I did not. My intentions were to get my connection back with AmeriGas.
I called again today at around 11am in a calm tone, to see what reaction I would get from the rep. I spoke to Courtney and received more of the aggressive unpleasantness like I had received from you. I asked her who I spoke with and could I speak with you. She said, "No, Barbara is not available now and won't be available the rest of the day." She then said, "You can try back next week." I asked Courtney if I would leave a message for you to get back to me. She avoided the question until I pressed more. She, like you did just a few days ago, began an aggressive tone. Eventually, I got her to say "yes" she would leave a message for you. But she didn’t sound happy with giving me that answer.
My question is this: Is this how AmeriGas treats all of their customers? Or, is it just the Lake Ronkonkoma, NY office? There are hundreds of gas companies. I don't deserve and refuse to be treated like this. You, as the manager, set a tone for your office. Your poor service rings well within your office. Somebody is going to get my $400 as I need propane for my stove. You obviously do not want it. And since you don't value your customers the way a company selling a product should, you definitely will not get my service. Not only that, but I promise to share my experiences with any and all AmeriGas potential customers.

This complaint is all about incorrect billing and poor customer service. I started service with this company on December 2010. At that time I was quoted a low, introductory price/gallon for my first tank fill. That "deal" has never been billed correctly and that is where my problems started. I have had billing and customer service problems ever since. When I call the local office to address this issue, the chances of my call being answered by a human is around 50/50. When I do get an answer, I am told that my information will be taken down and a manager will contact me.
After about a dozen calls, nothing has happened. I have receipts totaling $1193.18 paid to date to this company yet, my bill still shows a balance due of over $300.00. I then tried to get some help from the main office in Texas but I was just redirected back to my local office. A huge run-around. To date, my records and receipts show I have a balance of zero dollars. It seems to me that Amerigas has taken the "ignore him and he will eventually pay" approach. I will not go away. If I need to get an attorney, I will. This is wrong!

We arrived at our vacation home near Zanesville, Ohio on 3/27 to find AmeriGas has removed our 500 gallon propane tank. According to our neighbor, it happened in the last few weeks, as they witnessed the removal. We don't visit the home often this time of year, so as soon as it was found, I immediately called AmeriGas. We had filled the 500 gallon tank on 12/31/09 with 200 gallons, and paid in full, plus signed a new contract. I have all of this paperwork in hand, and the customer service rep stated the account looked fine on their computer. I requested to speak to someone who could address the issue today, 3/27. My first call was made at 11 AM, and they did return my call about an hour later, with the news that the district manager, Jim Valence, was not going to address this issue today. I was told he needed to go to the office on Monday, to review what happened and there was no one who could help me, not even deliver a small cylinder, so that we can have heat.
I'm very, very upset for the lack of concern about the mistake they made. I understand mistakes happen, but the Roseville office is not going to be bothered on a weekend, to deal with their mistake. Do they not have someone on call for emergencies? I consider the fact that they took a propane tank, that was almost half full without any notice to the customer/consumer, as an issue. And again, I have the paid receipt from the delivery made on 12/31/09, and my account is in good standing, with nothing due. I asked how they expect me to heat my house for me and my family, and I was told sorry for the inconvenience.
That is not acceptable in my eyes. I work for a company where I'm required to have weekend duty, to deal with emergencies, a company much smaller than AmeriGas. When I get a call, I have to go to the office. I'm not sure how this will get resolved, but their lack of compassion and/or concern for what has happened is incredibly disappointing to me. I will never do business with them again, nor will I recommend them. Our house has sat empty with no heat for about 3 weeks, best we can tell. It is a vacation home, so we are only here periodically this time of the year. We leave the furnace on 55 degrees, in case it gets really cold. We will be spending the next two nights with no heat, due to the propane tank being removed. Thus far, we have not had any issues as a result of no heat in the home.

In 2008, I had a new energy efficient home built. The walls are 6 inches thick with great insulation. I had radiant floor heat installed throughout the home that is run by a Munchkin Boiler. The Munchkin also provides hot water to the water storage tank. I have one vent-free fireplace, one hot water heater, and one hot water storage tank. All of these are operated with propane. I closed on the house on December 31, 2008 and moved in during March 2009. The floors were set at optimum efficiency when turned on.
Amerigas is the propane provider. I paid for the first two fills with a check. Then I requested a budget pay program which allows me to pay monthly. On January 21, 2010, the office staff told me they were going to have to charge me $860 per month in order to pay for all the propane that was being used at my residence.
August 6, 2008 propane tank was installed. October 28, 2008, filled with 844.3 gallons. These first two actions were listed on the builder's bill, although I paid for them. I have copies of the invoices. January 18, 2009 ,tank ran dry. Jan 18, 2009, filled with 877.4 gallons. December 3, 2009, tank ran dry. December 3, 2009, filled with 761.7 gallons. December 16, 2009 filled with 183.3 gallons. December 30, 2009 filled with 175.8 gallons. January 13, 2010, filled with 213.5 gallons. January 20, 2010 ,leak discovered and repaired.
The Munchkin boiler has a computer chip in it for information. According to that internal chip, on February 2, 2010, the Munchkin had been plugged in for 9000 hours. Of that time, it showed 1391 hours of run time. It has a breakout of the percent of capacity that it will run, but I will use 100% capacity (worst case), even though it rarely went over 50%. The Munchkin operates at 80,000 BTUs an hour if run at capacity. Multiplying the 1391 hours of run time, by 80,000 BTUs gives me a total of 111,280,000 BTUs if the Munchkin runs at 100% during the 1391 hours of operation. I estimated the Propane BTUs at 91,000. If I divide the 111,280,000 BTUs by 91,000 BTUs per gallon of Propane, it shows that the Munchkin has used a maximum of 1,222.85 gallons of Propane. I'm told that the Munchkin will rarely run at 50% for the number of appliances and the size of the house. If we used the next worse case at all hours at 50%, the Munchkin would use 611 gallons of propane since installation.
The Rheam hot water heater, located on the other end of the house has a sticker that says its average rated use is 283 gallons of fuel annually. The pilot light was lit on this appliance approximately Feb 15, 2009. It has not yet run a full year. It is also not activated every day. The fireplace pilot light was lit in mid December 2009, almost a year after moving in. The fireplace was turned on for one evening. When the leak was discovered outside, the pilot light was turned off and has not been relit. That means the pilot light was on approximately one month and the fireplace ran wide open for about 2 hours one evening. Amerigas tells me that the fireplace consumes about 4 gallons of propane per hour when running. Adding the 8 gallons for the fireplace, 283 for the hot water heater, and the 1,222 for the Munchkin together shows that this house consumes a maximum of 1513 gallons of fuel since the propane tank was installed. To date, Amerigas has delivered 3056 gallons of propane since October 28, 2008. Where is it going?
There were no appliances turned on that would take propane from October 2008 through mid January 2009. That means that 844 gallons evaporated or was lost in approximately 10 weeks. I expressed concern at that point and was told that the builders always leave the appliances on for the workers' comfort and they show no regard for how much it costs. Not knowing that none of those appliances were turned on nor connected yet, I didn't have much defense.I have had discussions with Amerigas about the exorbitant amount of propane they bring here. They have always blamed it on the radiant floor heat. They said that blowing through 3000 gallons of propane in 13 months is not unusual. Now, I have proof that the floor heat is not to blame.
I expressed grave concern over the leak. The repairman said it was an install leak, meaning it has been leaking since the tank was installed. The Amerigas office staff tells me that it has not leaked that long and that the most that could come out of that particular leak would be 10-15 gallons--even if it had been leaking since the installation. In an effort to appease me, they have slightly discounted the cost of the last three deliveries. They gave me roughly 25 cents per gallon discount.
The radiant heat company said they have a client who is heating an open warehouse. Their propane usage is approximately 50 gallons a month to run their system. I also did research on the internet through websites that had information on both the Munchkin boiler and the radiant floor heat. For the companies that responded, they were all appalled at the amount of propane that the house is supposedly using. When the tank runs dry, the propane company has to do a system safety check. It is also very interesting that all three LP Gas System Safety Checks show a different manufacturer and different serial numbers and different distances from the tank to the house. Based on the knowledge I now have from the internet and on the appliances, I believe that there is either a large leak in or below the tank, or that Amerigas is lying about the amount of propane they are delivering. I would welcome some direction. Is there anything I can do to about this?

In August of 2007 I stopped an Amerigas delivery person from delivering gas to my house explaining that I was over 50% and do not need a delivery, and that I would call the office for a delivery. We only use gas for our oven. (Amerigas evidently was not aware of that after servicing us for 17 years.) In Oct. I received a call from Denise wanting to know if we wanted a delivery. I told her no, we were fine and I would call; we were still at 48%. On Nov 14th they delivered 202 gallons at a cost of $491.00. I had spoken to Denise in Dec. explaining to her we never authorized that delivery and that I would continue paying $70.00 per month as I have done for the past few months. She said fine and that she would send me a new contract. I never received it but continued to pay my bill. As of Nov. 5, I had a credit balance of $131.00 In Jan. I received a past due notice on my account for $328.68. I once again called and spoke with Gloria. I requested an accounting on my account. I called back to dispute the late fees and another fee for something I never requested. I spoke with Gloria again in Feb in reference to another PAST DUE bill. She told me she would send me a new contract. She told me my amount to pay is different from the the payment I have been making and to wait until I get the contract. I received the contract in late Feb and mailed it back. I didn't pay Feb because I was waiting for a new contract.
However, on March 14th I received a collection notice. ( My March electronic payment was received for $70.00 on March 14th.) I have been in contact with Amerigas almost monthly since August. I was never once told that they would send my bill into collection for a gas delivery that was never authorized by myself. I had been paying on my bill and have always paid my bill for 17 years. I find it odd that they can call me to see if I need a delivery but not to tell me they are sending a $200 bill into collections.
I never authorized the delivery of the $491.00 gas delivery. Now my credit report received this non payment which actually was never a non payment.

I conserve fuel by heating my home with a wood burning stove and I only use about 400 gallons of propaine a year. I am being charged $3.39 a gallon because I don't use twelve to fifteen hundred gallons a year to get a better rate. I'm on a fixed income and being penalized for trying to conserve energy. Our neighbor has the same company and they are paying almost a dollar a gallon less than me because they use more propane.
I feel I'm being discrimated against for trying to conserve fuel and save money by using a wood burning stove but I have to pay more per gallon. Is this legal?

I use propane to heat my home and a couple year ago I was promised better rates and service so I agreed to switch my propane service to Amerigas in Waterford Michigan. My price saw a steady increase year after year until it was no longer competitive so this fall I began to shop around.
After finding a company who's prices were $0.30 per gallon cheaper I contact Amerigas to cancel service and I was informed of the 'small print' in my contract which states that there is a $100 fee to end service. Note that this fee is not for terminating early, damage or emptying the tank, it would be the same whether a customer terminates after 1 year or 15 years of service. This is clearly nothing more then a shady practice to discourage customers from shopping for the best rates.
Please understand when a customer switches propane companies they must budget to cover a full 1st fill with the new company, which will be 350 gallons @ $1.79 per gallon. With Amerigas piggy backing a termination fee and the economy as it is today many homeowners simply can't afford to switch to get a more competitive price.

Bought house in '98..house had been empty for 2 yrs..had a Floor Furnace that used Propane Gas..(Tank Underground)..looked in Yellow Pages to find a company who delivers Propane and called Columbia Propane..they set me up and account and began delivering propane.
Recently company bought out by Amerigas. I converted from floor furnace to heat pump in 2004 with Propane as emergency backup. Was still requiring the same amount..had Amerigas come check for leaks..no leaks found. Had electrician come out..Furnace wired wrong. Re-wired to use Propane as back up only. No longer using as much Propane as before.
Had a house fire Aug 29th. In temporary housing. Gas turned off from Sept to present. Received phone call 1st part of December from Amerigas Rep(name unknown) who stated if I did not order Propane withen the next few days I would be charged $30 rental fee..I said I would have to talk to my husband about that. That didn't sound right. Well I did not call her back. I went ahead and ordered a fill up. The same day they filled up they left me a bill with a Previous Pending charge of $210 for a rental fee.
I spoke with Sonali at Amerigas who kept telling me because I did not get 250 gallons between 10/05 and 10/06 that I have to pay for rental. I told her I've been getting fuel for 9 yrs and this is the 1st I've heard of such. I explained I now have a heat pump and do not need 250 gallons a year. I told her to mail me any contract I may have signed in '98 or a copy of anything written that states there is a $210 rental fee for a minumum fill up. And to also send me something stating they own the tank.
We went round and round. She said her hands were tied and the manager(Rebecca) would call me. Approx a week later I get another call from Sonali stating the manager told her to take care of it. Again we went round and round. I told her they do not own this tank and I see nothing that states rental fees on the last 9 yrs invoices. She said she did NOT have to prove they own it I have to prove I own it with a bill of sale..She said she is willing to give me a FREE water heater(recorded)and as long as I use it they will waive future rental fees.
I spoke to my closing attorney who stated the tank conveyed with the house and they are trying to lay claim to it. The house was vacant for 2 years why didn't they, if it was their's) remove it? Who was paying the rental fee then?
Sonali also told me they will remove the tank for excessive fees and if I don't pay will charge me late fees plus interest and put a lock on it so it can't be filled. She states there is a container law that only the company who owns it can fill it so it must be there's or they wouldn't have filled in from the start..I called another company who stated anyone can fill your personal tank.

I rent my residence with my daughter and it is difficult enough keeping up with all the other rising costs for utilities without having to be billed for nothing. I know to some people it does not seem like much money but when things are fairly tight to begin with it does cause other bills to be put off.
