I've rented a few cars on Turo over the past few years. My experience with the Hosts has been very good, and I've been lucky enough not to have problems or damages. However, the true test of a company's relationship with a customer is how they handle a situation when everything DOESN'T go according to plan, and in this regard Turo made me feel like I was totally on my own.

    1. Confusing and contradictory claims/damages information on their site.
    2. Totally outsourced claims handling and I suspect even customer service.

    3. Zero accountability or escalation process in case one (or both) of the two agents above didn't really help you (or ignored you, which is what the claims agent has done to me, despite my valid questions regarding their own stated terms).

To elaborate further, the vehicle was damaged while in my car, though I was not driving. The situation required some critical thinking, and though I was fully communicating, Turo was operating in an automated and brainless fashion, and gave me NO AVENUE through which to get a decision maker to assess the situation. I was being railroaded down an illogical path with ZERO communication about the extra details I'm about to present.

Here's where it gets confusing: It was a small dent/scratch, but deep enough to require paint. I immediately informed the host and sent photos so he was aware. I had the Turo standard protection, at $500 deductible (which cost me $13 a day!!). I also have personal auto insurance with a very low comprehensive deductible. Through communication with the host, I also discovered he was paying for Premium level host protection from Turo, which clearly states that scratches/dents/dings under 3 inches are covered fully by Turo.

Chapter II: The host files a claim, and Turo processes it fairly rapidly. I learn that I am being billed $150 for their time/trouble to review and file the claim, which at least counts against my deductible, and also another $180 for the damage. Not too bad, but my personal insurance deductible is still much lower. I concurrently contact my insurance company and file a comprehensive claim, since the damage occurred due to wind and while the car was parked. I send emails to the Turo (Liberty Mutual) agent and to my own insurance agent giving the claim numbers and information. My insurance company is responsive, but not sure how to deal with this type of arrangement and investigating further. Turo's insurance agent, however, is completely ignoring my voicemail and multiple emails inquiring the following: Is this not already covered by the Host's Premium Protection Policy? Can I use my own insurance instead?

I simply get no reply and an invoice, no explanation or direct response offered. It seems to me that the business leads and programmers at Turo have developed a wonderful business model where they wash their hands of the burden/accountability / and liabilities involved in facilitating this business. They simply farm it out to someone else, take their profit, and walk away (straight to the gym/golf course/** lounge wherever SF dev bros go). While this is wonderful for them as it probably allows them the freedom and luxury to live well and have very flexible lives, the end result is a company that feels like it's run by automated processes, and intentionally makes it very very difficult to get the attention of anyone with any authority to clear up a mistake in that automation or hold their outsourced agents accountable.

The result is a situation that makes you feel like you exist to serve Turo's comforts, and feels like a one-sided arrangement when there is a legitimate dispute. Clearly, the teachings of Timothy Ferriss are gospel at Turo HQ. I give this company two thumbs down. I'm going back to traditional rentals and will never expose myself to this liability again unless I hear they've made a significant change.

    Reviewed June 23, 2020

Hello all, just writing a review to prevent you from experiencing the same problems. DO NOT BOOK WITH THIS COMPANY. Here is my story, on June 12th 2020, I booked a trip for 9:30am June 15th 2020, 3 days in advance so that the host would have plenty of time to prepare. When I tried to pick up the car, and the host let me know I will be meeting his assistant at a parking lot to pick up the car. I said ok. When I got to the parking lot, the car was still not there. The assistant said it will be a few more minutes. After waiting 20 minutes in 80 degree weather in a sketchy parking lot, I asked the assistant again where is the car. He said the car is still being washed. To me I am frustrated at this point as I booked this car for 9:30 am so I could make it to work by 12pm. Now it’s already past 11 am and the car isn’t here. I will definitely be late to work.

Finally when the car did come, it was extremely extremely dirty. The host told me the reason it was so late was because they were getting the car washed. That makes no sense because the car was extremely dirty, I am talking there was bird poop all over the windows and dirt that looks like it’s been baked on there for a while.... The car was so dirty I couldn't believe it. The inside of the car had pet hair everywhere all over the seats and everything is so dusty and disgusting. Let me add I AM ALLERGIC TO DOGS. If I wasn’t going to be late to work I wouldn’t even have gotten in the car! It was extremely unacceptable.

I contacted the Turo support right away (by the way, there is no actual phone number to speak to a person...it is an automated number that doesnt actual dial anywhere, so I had to go online and "chat" with a support team...). After going back and forth, submitting photos, the whole 9 yards, the support girl Daniela asked if I wanted a travel credit. I reiterated I would NEVER be using Turo again and that I expect a partial refund. I did not even ask for a full refund because I still had to use the car and did not have time to miss out on work.

In this coronavirus so many people have experienced layoffs, shift cuts, many people including myself are suffering and NEED the money. The support team said I will be receiving a partial refund and I will get an email in a few days. I never received any email or refund. I reached back out via chat to the support and now they are saying they offered me a reimbursement for a car wash and a travel credit and that I was never promised a refund.??? What kind of service is this? Were they expecting ME to go get the car washed? Why would they offer a travel credit when they can just reimburse my card the same amount?

I asked the support team about this and they said Turo doesn't handle refunds, it is up to the host. How does that make any sense? It's YOUR company? YOU don't handle the refunds? So you can just let hosts act how they want any take NO responsibility?? If you book with Turo and have a problem, this is how you will be treated. And I am not the only one, check out all the other horror stories on the Yelp page. ** Really disturbing stuff. By the way, the host I booked with is Andrey ** in 90015 zip code.

I have been extending this car since April 29,20 - A new state sales tax daily percent fee has been added to the guest total due. This applies to 18 states - I'm in Ga - This took effect on June 1, 20. I extend like every 3 days but on my receipt the total is from April 29, 20 and Turo based how much I paid from April 29, 20 and taxed me from that amount. Instead the percent should have been from how much I paid from June 1, 20. Turo disconnected the phone abruptly without notice and did not explain the percent charged my jurisdiction. I am also awaiting an email from them.

I got scammed by your host. But I understand that I wasn’t focused and I allowed someone to play me. However, I want you guys to know that this guy is truly untrustworthy and I dont want someone else getting hurt.

    1. I received the vehicle very dirty. Including ** all over it. He stated that he was getting the car wash and that is why he was late to arrive but he only ran it through one of those drive thru washes. 2. The tags were expired. We are a young ** family. The police use things like that just to pull us over especially if they run the plates and see that we aren’t Asian.

    3. I expressed this to him. He offered to give me a Maserati instead. I told him that I was using it for my son’s drive by graduation and that vehicle would not work. I’ll just get this one washed. 4. He called me to tell me that I could return the car early and get a refund for the second day. He said have it back by 8:30pm and change it in the app. That is how I went so far over my mileage. I prepaid for 2 days which gave 200 miles but because of his instructions I went over. There is no way in the world that Lakewood to San Bernardino, is 297 miles but I cannot prove it because allowed him to play me and Turo

    5. Upon arrive he inspected the vehicle. He was satisfied because the car was returned in better condition than when it left. The car was detailed and had a full tank of gas. I said let’s check the mileage together he said no it’s ok. And began to show me and my boyfriend pictures of the grey Maserati that he offered us a free day to use because of the dirty car.

    6. He said give me your phone so that I can take pictures of the car for you. Turo wants certain angles. So I gave him my phone. It wasn’t until after I received the notification of over mileage that I realized he was trying not to highlight all of the actual damage to the car like the dent in front fender, the expired tags, and the damage to the front bumper on the bottom. And of course no pictures of the actual mileage.

I’m usually very detailed and more focused on situations like this but my mom was being rushed to hospital for a stroke and my son was graduation during a pandemic. So no I didn’t have a clear mind during this transaction.

This guy posted a review on me which is all lies but I’m a media figure I get that pretty often. He said that we tried to rob his friend’s house when we were waiting to pick up the vehicle. When I arrived at the address that he provided he was not there. He was running late driving through the car wash. There was no street parking and the gate to the driveway was open. We drove in and parked. We never got out of the vehicle. I was trying to surprise my son with car so I video taping his anxiety and expressions the entire time, even when I drove up driveway and caught the host getting out of his vehicle. Proof that my family and I were not on the property to harm anyone. But again this guys risked the lives of me and my family. Because the police would have seen that as trespassing and arrested us or worse. The host didn’t even live at this address and provided no instructions for my arrival.

I say all of this to say. That I accept the charge. I was going to dispute it with my credit card company but I have the money and I’d rather focus my energy on my family during this tough time and not argue over pennies. The host offered to sell us the car for $9000 and we were going to purchase it for my son, but we’ll keep our money because this guy is dishonest and should not have a place on the Turo platform.

    Be Blessed

    Erica

I wish there was a 0 star here. The service of TURO platform is the worst. I am the host from last 6 months now and I always have my protection plan which gives turo 35% of earning. I took this plan so that I am protected in case of any incident. Few of my guests had some accidents and damaged my car. TURO always wanted me deal with the guests directly instead of going thru them. This always make the host the bad guys and get low rating on the review as guest never want to pay for damages.

When I raised my damage claim with TURO, they always make some or the other reason to deny your claim saying your tire are worn or I do not see a clear photo of the pre-condition or you have used the same photo for check in or others checkout. They just want to get the host 35% share of earning for providing no support or protection. In the first case, the customer broke the seat adjuster and said "I am sorry my wife broke it." I said, "No worries, you can order the part, I will take care of it." Anyway, the customer blocked me, but I still keep our phone conversation. Anyway, Turo ignored me.

Second problem The customer did not show up and complained that they have been in my address but never saw the car, that is a good lie. In fact, I provided them evidence, and even I asked them, if the customer has been in my address, why he never called me, or why he did not send you any photo. Anyway, it can be a small problem, but GUYS - Turo does not have time to investigate the problem and care about you! You will earn $20 per day, but it does not worth for it. You will worry about your hard earned car, $20 per day does not worth it.

I started to unlist my two cars, btw, I am All star Host and I have 5 star reviews. I never got even 4 star reviews. I was really responsible with this job, but Turo never cared about me. Additionally, the story of my close friend, the customer hit the car and Turo said "your car is already over 130k, therefore we do not care about your car." Another friend. The customer drove his car recklessly, my friend provided Turo with GPS report where it shows that the customer drove the car 90 miles, 110 miles. Anyway, the car got engine problem. Turo said "Hey your car has a recall, therefore we don't care about your car."

Overall, when you have a problem, Turo will find a good reason to tell you instead of helping you to solve car issues. Turo does not have time to investigate any problem properly. Therefore, do not list your car on Turo. You can do Uber or Lyft and earn $20 in an hour. But never let to anyone to rent your car. If someone from Turo reads my reviews, I am ready to provide you with information whatever I mentioned there. Even I can tell you the information of my friends. I hope this review will help you to get the fair result for me and my friends.

I have generally been happy with the service and like the variety of cars available, although it is stressful to know that providers can cancel on you last minute. This has not yet happened to me, but it remains a concern each time since we generally rent for a specific purpose (like an out of town trip) that can't be rescheduled. Having a last minute cancellation would effectively ruin whatever experience we got the car for. I also recently tried for the first time to refer a friend and discovered that there is no longer any kind of discount or referral program. In general the process of obtaining and using a promo code is difficult. Going all the way back to my first rental in fact a first time user code that I had at the time did not get applied.

TURO ONLINE CAR RENTAL ACTUALLY. It is been the most frustrating experience ever. To keep it short, they'll make it easy for you to jump on that car and drive away, and if you are lucky this time around you might not have problems. But if something happens be aware, this is not an Airbnb for cars. Cars are NOT airbnb, they are a huge responsibility cause they are on the street where things happen all the time - unlike the chances of you burning down a rented airbnb house. My trip cost me $3000 for two days - read that right - the car is under the owners name, not a car rental company so any trouble you might run into, you will NEVER be able to take care of it without the car owner there, meaning you'll be stuck helpless in a bad situation paying fees and just seeing those bills pilling up against you. Follow my advice and plan something better, and remember thing just happen, don't fool yourself.

I rented a Range Rover from Andrea through Turo a month in advance for our family trip. I had called Andrea (vehicle owner) over 2 hours prior to our arranged time to give him plenty of notice we were at the agreed location and he was still an 1.5 hours late. So we left with the vehicle and within 30 minutes of driving the vehicle, we noticed the air suspension had dropped and was scraping on the tires so badly, we had to stop on the side of a busy highway and started trying to communicate with the host. It took him 30-45 minutes to respond, so we would have to sit and wait. While waiting on the side of the road, we notice the headliner was also hanging down from the roof. Not the quality of the vehicle we thought we were paying for. When we finally spoke with Andrea, all he could say was it was in perfect shape when he delivered it to us. (Probably the reason he was 1.5 hours late.)

We were told to continue driving it as we had 160 miles to our destination and 5 days of vacation of driving it. This vehicle continued to do the same thing another 16 times leaving us stuck each time on the side of the highway. We continually tried to contact him through his cell number for which he told me to communicate with him through the Turo site which only took longer for his response making me more irritated. THE VEHICLE AIR SUSPENSION SYSTEM WAS BROKEN AND WAS RIDING ON TOP OF THE TIRES FOR NEARLY 160 MILES!!..

The next morning I told them I was done with the vehicle being broken and would be taking my vacation time to rent from a local car dealership and for him to arrange to have his vehicle towed from where it was parked. I was told by Turo on the phone that they would reimburse me $150 towards my rental car for my inconvenience and rebate me any money towards my rental of the Range Rover. So after wasting 3 hours driving the next day driving around trying to find a replacement vehicle, I was told the tow truck driver was available to pick up the broken down vehicle and so I ended up paying another $500+ for another rental vehicle on top of the almost $800 I had spent on renting this vehicle.

After conveying this information to the Turo representative I was told they would reimburse me my full rental cost and was told they would also add $150 towards whatever I had to rent for the rest of our stay there. I assumed this meant that I was going to be reimbursed the full rental of the Range Rover plus $150 towards the new rental since the vehicle did not even last 24 hours. WRONG.

After coming in contact with Turo's office personnel, I was passed around multiple times and for the next 60 plus days afterwards, to only receive the remaining days rental cost of the vehicle ($150 lesser) and no $150 promised for the rental of another vehicle. Also, Turo representatives would only reply to my emails once per week for the next 2 plus months. So here I was with over $1300 dollars worth of rental costs and not ever sure how much I was going to be reimbursed for.

I was emailed one day that I was going to be reimbursed the full amount, then the next email would say they reconsidered and only partial reimbursement. I had to settle for only partial reimbursement or nothing at all. Turo has shown me zero compassion towards this situation and has taken my money and left a previously happy customer, TOTALLY DISGRUNTLED. I will never do business with them again nor refer them to anyone. Their office personnel have no training on how to make a customer happy and would rather lose a repeat customer than spend a few dollars trying to right a wrong situation. RENTER BEWARE AND DO NOT RENT FROM TURO...

I rented a car for my first time ever using this "Turo-App"! It was horrible, I rented vehicle from a host not less than 16 minutes of driving down the street. I didn't notice prior, because car was listed under great conditions. So, as I'm driving I noticed very oddly it was feeling unsteady, and lower to ground. I rented a 2016 Hyundai Sonata. It's made lower, to ground. So, ignoring the apprehension I proceeded to drive up the street. A few miles away a car flag's me down. Indicating a flat-tire. I was shocked, pulling into gas station. I instantly check and it's way low, like very flat! I call customer service roadside assistance. They send someone out. I had to wait an hour and a half for help with tire change.

Before, the tire was changed I spoke to Rep, who said they can't issue reimbursement. I would have to handle it with a live - chat platform! On the web - via online. This was insane to hear, that they didn't have phone support for this issue. Technician change's tire, and the (Doughnut -tire) was too small to continue trip. The phone roadside assistant asked me to drive car back to owner. And, then I will be able to "Try " and get replacement. And reimbursement, I did.. The owner tried to act like he didn't know. When it was obvious he knew very well. I had very important meeting and errands to run today. Yet, everything been cancelled.

I went on Web - live chat where Rep's couldn't help. Their customer service was none at all, instead of being charged for first trip.. When I tried to rebook second car the guy indicated he didn't even have the Car! So, I was charged a new fee again. The representative then proceeded to tell me use another third party to rent vehicle. She tried to give me Turo credit for rentals. But, I asked for full reimbursement. This whole drama took me from 8 a.m. at time of rental to 12:30 pm To, get refunds from not just one rental! But, two! With another issue of car being non-existent! This is so crazy! I'm not sure what's the deal with this company?! Definitely scammers be aware! Very unsatisfied, and that's only some of problems I encountered and I have full proof of everything!

I recently had a rental. The guest had a flat tire and left it in a garage for me to deal with. Turo is paying less than half of the repair costs and says the labor for the repair is $10 and wants me to use a rim that doesn't match the other rims. Also, with the platinum level of insurance they gave me a $25 credit to compensate for the car not being rentable but I would have made $50... So the compensation on unrentable days isn't quite right either. This rental I was going to make $50 on is now going to cost me $600. Don't rent your car on Turo if you are counting on their insurance to repair the car.

Everything was great until I got hit with a bogus cleaning fee by the owner a day after I dropped the car off. It had been raining the whole time I had it and I guess he expected me to still have the car washed (which I had to do the second I picked the car up because there were bird droppings all over the hood and roof of the car). There was no more than the normal road dirt on the car from a couple days worth of driving in the rain. As far as the interior goes the car was no dirtier than when I picked it up other than a few small rocks on the floor mat from normal use. I was very displeased when I got the notification saying I was being charged an extra $40 for no real reason. I was planning on renting that car again for a week in a few months but definitely will not be doing so anymore.

I actually was really excited to be renting through them... up until 4/21/20. I rented a car through a host named Eric **, a week in advance. I would be dropping off mask and other supplies to my family who is miles away from me, in order to keep them safe. When I arrive to my 9am pick up time I arrive to the car I would be renting pulling up right after me, with the previous renter driving it. Oscar, one of Eric’s employees?, was cleaning a different car for a different guest. After waiting 15 mins for him to clean the other car he quickly goes over to the last renter, grabs the car & comes over to me. He explains that the lady returning it was late, and due to that I was getting a dirty car.

At this point I was frustrated. I’m already 15 mins late, which will become a big snowball effect for my day, nothing was ready or prepared and with everything going on with covid 19 I couldn’t believe these people would do this to me. When explaining that I was disappointed with a dirty car Oscar said, "Well I can clean it for you but it’ll take another 10-15 mins." So I rent a car from 9-9 a week in advance where you have plenty of time to prepare, and even enough time to prepare an alternative car, I will now be going into my Paid rental by 30 mins because the Host and his staff were not properly prepared? At this time I had to leave, I was late. I wiped down everything I would touch as a driver & got on my way.

I attempted to call Turo 4 times, when I was prompted to input my phone number to receive a chat invite via text in relation to the issue, the line would go dead.

Well, I’m driving, I can’t go online and search how to get a hold of people or an alternative way... I’ll have to do this at a different time. When returning the car, the host nor his employees were there. I waited again 10 mins and then contacted the host. He said he would be there shortly. I am sorry, I have things to do. If I wanted the car from 9:30-9:30 I would have booked accordingly. I had an uber outside was it if which got canceled because I was delayed, which mind you, I still had to pay for.

When expressing my issues with the host via messages he became instantly defensive. I questioned why they didn’t have an alternative car line up for me when they realized the car I would be renting wasn’t there. He then called me high maintenance & said I was rude and that instead of being closed-minded I should have taken an alternative car that I was told to... Uhm, like I just stated to him & wrote in this review I was never offered an alternative car.

I reached out to support again, via chat to only get closed out after a 2-minute delay. You should have seen the dirt on my wipes from wiping things down clean. The remote for the car was disgusting enough not to mention the spilled soda and ash everywhere. This company isn’t that good. They don’t offer any customer service. I have a crappy review from the host on my account, boofreakingwho, but yet I can’t leave him a review? The concept is cool, but customer service is an issue. Big time.

The worst experience as a host. Turo refuses to fix damage caused by guest despite the claim that the trip is fully insured when they take 35% cut from booking fees. Hosts beware, Turo will not pay for damages and will not let you use the insurance. Their claims department will waste your time by leading you on that everything will be ok, then use every excuse in the world not to pay for the damage.

I took clear photos within 24 hours of the trip as required by Turo policy. In addition, I used the checklist provided by Turo that recorded that there was no damage. When I got the car back, I noticed the damage and reported it right away, took photos and submitted everything. Claims department asked me to take more photos of the damage, which I did. Then they instructed me to take the car to a body shop. Then they came up with a fix amount that is not enough to cover 10% of the damage.

It turns out that they cannot tell if the damage was on the car, because they cannot see it on pre-trip photos. They claim lighting to be the reason, but they choose to assume that there was damage before. They ignore their own checklist signed by me and guest before the trip, that shows there was no damageClaims processing is dragging the process, where my car is out of service and in the shop for over 2 month. The lost income insurance is a joke. They calculated my reimbursement to be a pathetic $1.08/day. Employees and manager ignore multiple complaints and requests to escalate. They follow deceptive practices to avoid full remediation of damage that was caused during an insured trip. Turo ignores proof that there was no damage to avoid paying for damage.

We used Turo on a recent visit to Waikiki and will NEVER do it again. The host was dishonest, tricked us into changing the reservation regarding drop off all so he could charge us a US$50 pick up fee. When we challenged him, he phoned us and made physical threats (he's a big guy). The car was dirty on delivery and he tried to trick us into cleaning to pre-rental standard before dropping it back. No issue with leaving the car clean, but what rental company in the world insists that you take it through a car wash before delivering it back.

The two days we had it it poured rain so there was road grime on it (obviously) for which he has tried to bill us $20 extra. There was not another hair out of place. We have raised a challenge with Turo but they are saying, "Too bad." I have discovered multiple Facebook groups for Turo Owners Called "Tips and Tricks to make extra money", check it out. Unlike Airbnb or other peer to peer rental options I highly recommend you stay away from Turo.

I discovered Turo through an ad on my PC when looking for a rental car for Spring Training in the Phoenix area. After researching it, I decided to give it a try. It was easy to use, my host, Tyler, was very responsive both at the time of reservation and as the trip approached. My driver, Jameson was absolutely the best! So helpful and accommodating in every aspect from the time I texted him that we had arrived, until he dropped us off at the departure gate. When we told him that Spring Training had been canceled while we were in the air, he was full of great ideas as to things to see and do in the area while we were there. Every one of his suggestions proved to be a top notch hit! Thanks!!!

I would give Turo 0 stars if I could. I've rented with Turo since March 2019. I had issues previously with hosts canceling at the last minute or listing the car as available when it's not. Most recently, Turo is being charging me $829 for a scuff mark above the rear right tire of a car I rented recently. I told the owner that I did not know where the mark came from and I did not cause it because I didn't. The mark could have easily been wiped out, and with any other rental company it would have been considered normal wear and tear. The owner reported it, and Turo didn't even attempt to investigate or contact me! Then they blocked me out the system so now I can't even get around like I need to for the week. Spare yourself the headache and rent with a bigger company. The rentals are not that cheap per day anyway. I was spending $50 a day for a long term rental.

I felt mislead about the car I rented. The car already had damage to it that wasn't disclosed to me until the host showed up and told me about it. The car had a horrible smell to it the whole time during the rental. The car ran low on oil and I had to suspend my rental 4 to 5 hours because the car needed oil. The host was late dropping the car off he was late picking the car up. I parked the car the night before and it didn't have any issues when the car was picked up the host claimed the tire was flat and the interior was dirty and that I didn't fill the gas tank back to a half. T

he interior wasn't dirty as I had my assistant clean the interior of the car the day we left. I put gas in the car the night prior to the turn in which I have receipts to prove that. The host came out the night prior because of the ”oil situation” and reviewed the interior and exterior of the car and even paid compliments about how good the car looked in and out. Then all of sudden changes his stance when he picks the car up and I am not present. The dispute was reviewed by ”Turo” and they found I need to pay more which I am not happy about especially being that I’ve already paid him almost $700 for the rental. I called Turo support an agent almost hung up in my face until the supervisor took the phone from her. All we were doing was trying to find a reasonable resolution for the issue at hand. That's the sum of my first experience with ”Turo” thanks for the horrible time.

I am a host on Turo with 2 cars and >20 trips for the past few years. It's clear in several ways that Turo only looks to minimize their costs and risk at the expensive of their guests and hosts, particularly the hosts.___ They boast a few different insurance options for damage to the interior and exterior. I don't have experience with this. However, mechanical damage is much less secure.___

If the vehicle is a manual 'stick' transmission and a guest ruins a clutch (this happened), there are two options. All damage has to be declared within 24h of the trip. That means you have to take it to tow it to a mechanic and have them demonstrate that the last driver is at fault for the clutch failure, and then send this to Turo for them to approve the repair. They do *not* pay for the *whole* repair. They prorate their reimbursement based on miles on the clutch divided by 75 thousand miles, an arbitrary life they selected for the clutch. My car was about 35k so they would have paid half, at most, if I was lucky.___

If the clutch is > 5 years old, they don't pay *nothing*. I cannot post the link, however it's at the top when googling 'Turo clutch policy'.___ I fortunately dealt with someone that was responsible and offered to pay for the job on their own. I expect most individuals to be less decent about accepting responsibility for their damages.___ If other mechanical issues arise, there is little way to demonstrate that a guest directly caused the issue. Their insurance policies do not cover your mechanical issues. You will foot the bill.___

Their insurance policies are shady. The host can select any level of coverage, let's say a 'standard' policy, pays a 25% fee, has a $500 deductible and otherwise no out of pocket for interior / exterior collision damage. The guest also selects their level of coverage, (premium, standard, basic, or none). They may select none, which Turo suggests they have their own insurance. They do not need to demonstrate proof that they have valid car insurance, let alone one that covers damages for driving another vehicle. Additionally, the cost is much more expensive when selecting any insurance for the guest. Turo collects takes anywhere from 20-35% from the host and charges up to double to the guest for taking the highest insurance.___

I spoke with several people at Turo about this confusion in how hosts can choose one level and guests choose another, or none. They had no way of explaining the mixed liability of damages. They had no explanation for how they would hold someone responsible for damages in the event of a collision and they don't actually have car insurance, and much less the subsequent burden to the host.___ If you let your guest use your E-Zpass and submit the screenshot of your E-Zpass log as the proof to request reimbursement, they do not accept this. The proof needs to include the license plate, and not the E-Zpass tag which is what's listed on the E-Zpass log. You will get wronged out of toll reimbursements.___

Many other reviews include instances where damages were assessed based on a much lower vehicle value than KBB or other fair pricing, and thus reimbursement was a fraction of what was owed to the owner.___ There are several other reviews where drivers and hosts describe being wronged by Turo and losing significant amounts of money.___ If you are a host, you are taking on significant risk lending your vehicle. They attempt to cover most bases, but there are plenty of ways things go wrong and shirk responsibility and costs. When they know their acting according to their policy, they make no exceptions nor apologies for shifting the costs onto the owner.___

I would like to expose the fraudulent treatment I received by TURO the car sharing company. They have defrauded me out of nearly $600 after the vehicle I rented became disabled through no fault of my own on the 3rd day of my 9 day rental which is approximately $400. I incurred an additional $180 in emergency transportation costs. I lost an entire day of my vacation to get replacement vehicle from a different company which cost about $100 more than my original booking with TURO for a much lesser vehicle. I rented a cool convertible to have my Florida vacation in with my children. Instead we spent a day walking and catching Ubers to find ANY available vehicle in the small town we were in. I have not been refunded the remainder of my trip or reimbursed for any of my additional costs. There is no price they can pay for the lost day or degraded experience of our trip that I as a single mom saved for an entire year to take.

The company claims they are entitled to keep the money as I failed to return the vehicle at my expense to the designated drop off location and that I abandoned the vehicle. The vehicle was disabled in a legal parking spot at my vacation rental and I was physically present when the tow truck that TURO called picked the vehicle up. The vehicle was disabled because the key fob had corroded and burnt out internally and there was no other way to gain entry or start the car. Turo claims that because I turned down the offer of a replacement key I am at fault.

They offered me a key the morning this happened but were unable to get it to me in time to attend the VERY expensive, non-refundable, scheduled event that we were on our way to. I told them we were going to Uber to our event and that I expected reimbursement and that I would deal with the car when we returned that evening. That evening I was never offered a replacement key. I was just told by the TURO representative that they were sending a tow truck.

The next day I was accused of being at fault for the damaged key, I was charged a cleaning fee for a car I couldn't even unlock, I was accused of bending a seat by putting my suitcase in the back seat, AND I was accused of smoking in the car. I don't smoke. TURO voided the insurance I paid extra for because they say I violated the terms by abandoning the vehicle. They seem to have decided in my favor about the key and the seat but they charged my credit card $50 for a cleaning fee that was unfair. We did not even drive the vehicle 150 miles total. They gave me the car with 1/8 of a tank of gas and got it back with 3/4 tank.

I have requested copies of all photos and transcripts of calls and have been completely ignored. TURO's final answer is that I have to pay $200 to go to arbitration!!! I have disputed the charges with my credit card company but that will take some time to resolve and does nothing to reimburse my uber costs. TURO and this particular host are very dishonest, disorganized and painful to work with. My vacation was basically ruined and $600 is a BIG DEAL to me. My poor kids got dragged all around Brevard County FL with their mom in tears trying to get us a car. I will speak out about TURO at every opportunity. Please help me!! Thanks!!

When we arrived they said that the car's exterior was dirty and that they'd wash it if we wanted to wait but didn't know how long it would take. We decided to take it as-was.

When I first started the car a message showed on the dashboard indicating that the key fob battery was low. I relayed this information to the Turo representative and he just shrugged his shoulders and didn't give any other response. Since the car started OK we decided not to pursue it, but regretted that later in the trip when we found that the remote lock/unlock would sometimes not function. When we attempted to leave the parking facility the gate would not open. We returned to the Turo area and they said that the car was missing something that would open the gate and that they'd open it manually when we approached. We returned to the gate and waited more than 10 minutes, but nobody opened the gate. We remained at the gate while my son ran back to the Turo area and found someone to finally open the gate.

I used to advocate for the convenience, flexibility and comfort of using Turo for car rental. I've taken two great trips around CO before a bad experience on my most recent one in CA, which has effectively ended my trust with this company in its ability to equitably serve renters of vehicles on their platform. **What (Also TLDR)**

I was blindsided with a $870 charge to my credit card for minor cosmetic damage to a rented vehicle.

    - I had little notification, involvement or visibility throughout the process.
    - Despite a reasonable and diplomatic dispute regarding the degree of my liability based on their terms of service/definitions provided on their site, Turo did not try to take my position into consideration and even tried to lie and avoid a real discussion over my issue.
    - Turo will try and dodge statements and gray areas in their policies, and absolve themselves of responsibility.

    - A traditional rental company would've been simpler, cheaper and financially smarter.

**How** My latest trip was on January 15th where I traveled around SF and the coast in the region. Hours after I returned the vehicle I notified by my host of some minor cosmetic scratches on the hood of the car. I had no knowledge of the damage until the host notified me. Nonetheless I apologized and he said he would follow up with Turo damage claims.

Fast forward February 18th, I was blindsided with a $870 charge to my credit card without warning, regarding the aforementioned damage. Why was I not notified, involved or given visibility into the process earlier? After talking with support turns out all 3 of the emails from claims, dated the 4th, 16th and 19th, had all gone to the spam folder*. I was not able to engage in a discussion or dispute of the pending charges, and it looks like I'm not the only one who had this issue (see Allen of NY, Feb. 5th 2020).

Turns out it didn't matter. The content in the first email assumed I was solely liable due to before and after photos, and the following emails basically slapped me with the cost, the bill of work and a warning that I'd be charged in 24 hours. The last email said the claim was resolved after they had charged my card - even though they hadn't actually been in contact me with me at all. The best part is that the claims associate tried to blame me for not reacting earlier and lie by saying, "The Turo app also notifies you of any unpaid balances on your account as well as the several emails sent." This didn't happen: I've had no problems receiving push notifications from the app and did not receive any updates on this process, and the second email said I would be charged within 24 hours (see above) - so there was no unpaid balances to be notified on. There's also not a clear path to this page from the web app.

**Why** Why $870? Not sure. The damage could be described as a loose collection of minor scratches in different directions that are generally not visible (only if you stare hard enough, as I didn't notice even after I took the car to the car wash). Perhaps someone sat on my car while it was parked? Perhaps debris and hail from my drive during a stormy day in Big Sur contributed as well? I wish I could put photos on this site, but I've shown some of my friends and they were shocked by the repair cost figure. One said it was the kind of damage that "as a car owner you wouldn't even bother to get fixed". I took a look at the Wear & Tear section, and found that by Turo's definition the minor scratches were probably beyond the 3 in. diameter rule imposed. However their page also states:

"Guests are responsible for and Turo doesn’t offer coverage for:

    - damage related to “misuse” or prohibited uses of the vehicle
    - serious damage to the inside of the car, including gouges, tears, and punctures

    - mechanical damage resulting from guest negligence, intentional acts, or improper driving

    Guests are not responsible for:

    - wear and tear or mechanical failure from normal vehicle use"

The cosmetic damage on the hood was not related to forbidden uses with the vehicle, was not serious interior damage to the car, nor was it mechanical or functional damage that would hinder or incapacitate the vehicle itself. The fact that none of these apply to my situation suggests the damage in question is fairly negligible. Furthermore, the wear & tear policy starts with the phrase, "Normal “wear and tear” that results from ordinary vehicle use is a part of using or sharing a car."

If we were to forego Turo's formal definition of wear & tear for a moment - the car was returned completely mechanically sound, and also clean/shiny due to my voluntary effort to be a good renter. A traditional rental company would take care of this for you - I paid out of pocket to be nice. Anyone in the market to rent a mid-range sedan would've been happy to drive this car, and could've immediately without issue after I dropped it off. Despite all this the insurance claim bill of work stated it was a collision (later was informed this is because Turo only offers one type of coverage) and the detail of materials / labor sounds like they basically replaced and refinished the hood. I hope it's not hyperbole to think this is overkill.

When I explained my position to the claims associate and asked to be escalated, I received a response saying that the scratches were more than 3 in., and therefore "rather severe". They then reminded me that they weren't a insurance company and that "...any damages that occur to the vehicle during your trip you are fully financially responsible for.", which is not true based on [https://support.turo.com/hc/en-us/articles/203990650-Wear-and-tear] https://support.turo.com/hc/en-us/articles/203990650-Wear-and-tear). They also told me to deal with it, with my personal auto-insurance (I don't own a car, and so I don't have auto-insurance). More dodging, and lying and absolving of responsibility.

I get it, I get it. A platform-provider company needs to make hosts happy while keeping costs low. So why not just offload it onto the end-end-users? And lie and try to convince them that it's wholly justified. I can understand if I had actually gotten into a collision or totaled the car that this would happen. But this is a farce. You'll have an easier time with a traditional rental company, trust me. I no longer will be a user of Turo knowing that I might be robbed every few rides over at best gray area decisions. I'm not the only one this has happened to either.

'*' Turo signs messages from their claims department with their root domain, which was going to spam probably because it's used for marketing emails that are often reported as spam. Meanwhile mail signed by 'mail.turo.com' e.g. reminder for an upcoming trip, when a host messages you, have arrived perfectly to my mailbox. Why Turo would choose an unproven domain to send such important mail - I'm not sure.

I had heard about Turo by watching Doug ** review cars he'd rented with your service. I found myself on vacation in Florida, and in need of a car last minute. The car rental agency near me only had expensive cars left, so I turned to Turo. I was able to rent a Tesla for the same price as the agency would have been (and had a great time!). The process was easy, the renter was outstanding, and the experience great overall. If I had to nitpick the app (as a UX designer), there are a few areas of improvements. 1- The chat doesn't refresh when a new message comes in unless I kill the app. 2- The signup process is a little lengthy. Maybe consider simplifying it, or at least break it into smaller logical steps. -3 The "end rental" part is confusing.

I enjoyed the entire experience!! I do think more miles should be allowed. By the time you add insurance you're paying the same if not more than a regular rental. But it was overall great and I will use Turo again!

My experience was a mixed bag. At first it all felt like it was going well. I was very happy with the car and my interactions with the car host. After returning the vehicle to its owner a day early and giving him a positive review I received a request for reimbursement of $316. My 2 day rental ended up costing me nearly $500. Somehow I managed to misunderstand the mileage allotted for my trip, not being daily, but I suppose for the entire days rented. Ultimately I think I would have been better off using a car rental company. $500 for a 2 day rental of a Prius is a bit on the steep side for me. The $.55 a mile (smaller/lighter print) info could have been better presented. Maybe in the same size and bold print would have been more clear. Never did hear back from customer service.

After my host canceled our trip the night before with no warning it took way too much haggling time get Turo to cover the difference of a new trip with a different host. They STILL didn’t completely cover the entire additional cost of another car. It was only 30 dollars and they would only agree to pay half. I will remember this next time I need reliable transportation. Great service if you want a nice car for a day but if you’re looking for reliable cheap transportation you may be better off with a large rental company.

Turo is a blessing for car rentals. It is the must check out for lots of savings. When you Research car rental in Turo you choose a rental and communicate through Turo for length, where to pick up and terms as well as cost. It was perfect renting from Martin. Easy pickup near where I was staying. When a car issue came up, he instantly resolved it and I continued on my way. I would recommend Turo as an alternative to LV airport renting. Do note mileage limits and any other items that may be noted; this is an individual renting the car and not a big company. Martin worked for my month rental perfectly.

I would give our experience ZERO stars if I could! We have had THREE hosts cancel on us in the last 24 hours. After the second time, my husband called and (after a LONG phone call with Turo’s customer service) finally got another car lined up (which they initially wanted us to pay MORE for even though we said we would not be giving them any more money). While we were on the airplane, that host also cancelled. Now we are sitting at our destination airport with no car while my husband once again is on hold with their customer service line. The lady he is speaking to basically said she can’t do anything and will refund our money. ALL OF OUR HOSTS WERE HIGHLY RATED. Don’t believe the lie that you just have to pick a top host and you’ll be fine. Absolutely terrible experience and we will not be using Turo again.

I save quite a bit of money by using Turo over the traditional car rental agency. Probably about 35% or so. I had a minor problem with the vehicle but the owner was able to switch out for another car for me, so it was probably better scenario than if I'd rented from an agency, had an issue, and then they would expect me to bring the car back to them to trade it out. This owner actually came to me on-site with a new car.

I have tried to get money back after complaining about a host's service and car quality and Turo is refusing to address my concerns. I want to write a review for my host but am unable to because the trip was "canceled" even though I spent an entire day with the car. Noah from escalations is being unresponsive after voicing my complaints and is literally ignoring my emails and calls. I have never heard of such bad customer service. I don't feel heard by Turo representatives and they are not making my situation easier by mistreating me like this.

We managed to travel 281 miles and make 4 stops for taking in all the beautiful places around Phoenix. Will definitely use Turo again. Thank you!

First time Turo user. Was skeptical at first, but had a great experience. Only issue I had was that the I feel like I was sort of misled into thinking I had to purchase some type of insurance. Would have ended up being about $150 cheaper if I had opted out of that, but I guess that's how they make their money. My host exceptional in terms of communication, punctuality, and veracity.

Where do I begin? The owner of the car offered free airport pickup in Maui but it cost me $13 to get it out of parking and the owner just blew me off about a refund for this. The car hesitated the entire week and had clunking noises the entire week especially backing up. The radio was out but the owner provided a Bluetooth device to play from our phone. An engine warning light came on as we approached the airport as we were returning the car. I think I'll rent from a real company next time in Hawaii. This is our second bad experience, at least we did not have to get towed like our Turo car in Kauai. The bright side is that we were able to get where we wanted and we saved $10 for the week when compared to Priceline...not worth the risk by any way shape or form. Turo needs better quality control.

I wanted to cancel because I couldn’t locate the car and I was gonna be late for my appointment but that wasn’t going to happen without a charge fee. Two hours to locate the vehicle, I couldn’t add a driver nor I was able to modify the trip drop off time on my own. Now it says the support email was changed and I can’t even send them an email. Long story short, just go with a reputable car reputable company.
