TripAdvisor is a great website but you must be aware that everyone's likes are different but most reviews share enough info to get a good mental picture of where you will stay.

I decided to sign up to Trip Advisor last month to rent spare bedrooms. Had I known that it's a nightmare company to work with, I'd not done so. Here are the three main issues: It's not possible to contact the company direct for customer support even through email; I've yet to figure out how to delete my account which includes banking information and lastly, there is no accountability option for bad renters. I was forced to turn down renters exactly because of this; not being able to verify who they are. This is why Airbnb has been fantastic; it enables trust. Now if I can only figure out how to delete the TripAdvisor account. My advice? Stay away.

I wrote a factual review about the Meriton Hotel in Chatswood Sydney. I had to submit it to TripAdvisor twice before they published it. The Meriton management then responded including saying that it had made things right with me. No, they have not, they cannot. How do you make right packing and unpacking my personal possessions and removing my food from the fridge (by a cleaner) and then putting it back in some time later and not telling me about it? I requested TripAdvisor 4 times now to remove the management review. It has represented me, to a degree, an incorrect one, and I believe is against the rules that TripAdvisor say they have. It appears on rule for the little folks and one rule for the big ones.

I submitted a review outlining issues/problems with a Hotel in Costa Rica in Jan. of 2018. It took a week for them to get back to me saying there were 2 items that needed to be removed because they were hearsay. The first was a statement made to me by local police about the hotel owner typically disappearing when previous incidents involving the police had occurred. The other was my statement that the local veterinarian had told me that he would hold the owner's dog for the 10 days required for rabies isolation. My wife was subject to an unprovoked attack by one of the owner's dogs that are allowed to roam the property in a pack (1-5).
Their email to me said to use the email to correct the review but after retyping and sending it, their email response was that the email site was no longer usable. This issue reoccurred multiple times with various attempts to contact them. This was in spite of their email saying I should use their email to respond within the next three days. (I responded the same day) The phone # listed for TripAdvisor HELP repeatedly said to go back to HELP. I finally reached a live person by going around the system. They suggested that I use their computerized HELP site. I wasted hours trying to contact them about this and a cancellation request that I had made in March of last year. They seem to have a problem with their software and/or their policies and their implementation. I won't be using them again.

So some anonymous person by the screen name, "**," starts stalking my reviews and comments on the TripAdvisor forums. I use my actual Facebook account; this person hides behind a cartoon picture and a nickname. This person is allegedly a "destination expert" for TripAdvisor as well. I'm not sure if that's a paid position or not.
Anyway, my reviews and comments start getting deleted. I submit a "help ticket" to find out why. I get a response within 24 hours claiming that I am using multiple screen names for the purpose of deceiving their users; it also claims I'm making inappropriate comments on their forums. I responded immediately with the facts of the situation as well as the issues with "**." Nearly three weeks, and four follow-up emails, later, no more response. I truly feel for folks who have spent money with these people to make reservations. Given how poorly they operate their website, as well as their borderline non-existent customer service, I would never give them a dime.

We found a bedbug in our hotel room but twice TripAdvisor rejected my review because I mentioned "bedbug." That TripAdvisor cherry-picks reviews shows that they are untrustworthy. Consumers have a right to know this information and are relying on others' experiences when they making accommodation choices. Tripadvisor negates any value of what they claim to provide when they withhold information. Disgusted.

However, the ones that were not glowing complained of the same things: Wet, smelly or dirty rooms and bathrooms, leaks, etc. We trust you to require Great Value hotels and resorts to be EXACTLY as you say, or you should remove them as a Great Value. I am SO disappointed in you!

Booked a condo in Florida 2/17/17 through Flip Key (**) for six weeks. Paid deposit, paid balance 12/30/2017. Received email saying thanks for paying balance and have a wonderful trip supposedly from the owner. On 1/24/2018, I received a text message from Flip Key saying the owner sold the condo and has canceled our reservation. We are leaving in one week to begin our vacation & now we have no place to stay. I called Flip Key & they were going to try to find a rental close to what we booked. February is the peak time in Florida and of course there was nothing available except for $400 a night places which is ridiculous. My husband called the condo owner... The owner told my husband the condo wasn't sold and that he had no record of any reservation for us.
Someone was staying at the condo now. He also said Trip Advisor called him 3 times the same day saying the reservation was canceled. He in turn told Trip Advisor there never was a reservation. Someone at Flip Key/Trip Advisor is lying or trying to cover something up. Either someone screwed up and didn't know what to do so they said the owner canceled to try to cover their tracks or someone is trying to scam us. We will be getting our full refund which is fine but the amount of stress and anxiety this has caused us is inexcusable. Someone needs to be fired for this. You don't cancel a six week reservation a week before. We canceled our credit card since Flip Key has it on file... They are very aware of the situation and will be checking into it further.
Also, I'm getting text messages, emails and phone calls from Trip Advisor rentals #11016241... Saying, "We are sorry the owner canceled and would be happy to assist you in finding a rental." I couldn't pronounce any of the people's names. I was lucky to find a last minute rental on my own through a rental company I know and trust. Flip Key/Trip Advisor rentals is supposedly secure but canceling our reservation at the last minute as I had said is inexcusable and very poor customer service. I would like to know the truth about my reservation and what exactly happened. Also after I received the cancellation text, the property was taken off of the website.

The most absolute disgusting customer service I have ever dealt with. I booked a stay at a rental home. Listing indicates kids are welcome upon request. Let the homeowner know I have kids. He told me I should cancel. (First sign that indicates disgraceful unethical behavior.) Homeowner wanted me to cancel since his cancellation policy is no refund. He gets the money and no home for us. Contacted TripAdvisor they got him to agree on allowing children since his listing indicated children allowed. Next homeowner indicated I was asking too many questions. So I stopped questioning. After all this the homeowner hikes the price of the rental from $826 to $2000. I call TripAdvisor. They have no response as to why such has happened. I decline this insane request for price change.
At this point I am completely irritated and annoyed. I call TripAdvisor AGAIN and AGAIN and AGAIN. Each call ends with "my supervisor will call you back." No callback. Each agent indicated if I cancel my booking the homeowner must approve the cancellation in order for me to receive my money back minus the $102 booking fee. At this point I'm willing to pay the booking fee even though the homeowner has acted unethically and absolutely rudely. Just get me out of this booking. After all who would feel comfortable staying in this man's home after all this B.S... Overall absolutely disgusted how a company can do this and have absolutely no regard for their customers I will never understand. I will be reaching out to the Better Business Bureau as well. This rating should be a -10 for all the stress this company has caused.

Even when I click the link 'Forgot my password', they don't send me anything. I also can't upload my pictures to TripAdvisor website! When I write a review about a place that doesn't appear in TripAdvisor database, but exist in Google search engine with photos, descriptions, and even videos, they don't publish my reviews, and don't even explain why. I booked a 2 night stay in Montreal at Ruby Foo's Hotel. As we neared the time to leave for Montreal, an enormous ice storm with predictions of freezing rain, zero visibility and a national weather advisory had us worrying about the 5-hour drive from Durham, NH. The day before we were due to leave, I phoned TA and was told that as long as I go the permission of the hotel in question, my $250 booking would be refunded. Of course, the hotel gave that permission and when I got back in touch with TA, the customer service rep said that upper management would not approve a refund for both nights, just the one I was within 24 hours of. TA refused to make an exception in the case of a weather emergency when travel was incredibly unsafe, and clearly cares more for their bottom line than the safety of travelers. Last year Saud booked a villa in Spain to go on holiday through a company listed on TripAdvisor and it turned out that it was a scam and they took over 25000 euros and disappeared. After several attempts to contact TripAdvisor we finally got through and they asked us to provide proof of transfers which were emailed to them but after a few weeks of waiting TripAdvisor terminated all contacts with us and did not answer our call or emails. The scammers were advertising for months on TripAdvisor sites for months prior to July and they were allowed to do so due to lack of any adequate due diligence by TripAdvisor so in my view TripAdvisor is responsible for our loss as we would have never given the scammers any money if they were not advertising on TripAdvisor sites for so long. TripAdvisor in my view helps scammers take people hard earned money.

Earlier this year my partner and I extensively looked into traveling to Montenegro for our summer trip. In making our final decisions we used TripAdvisor extensively. What we discovered, was the reviews of our hotel, were nothing short of lies. Before going on holiday, the reviews and photos available on TripAdvisor, we thought that we were headed to a luxury hotel. When we arrived, we were faced with a vastly different experience. Since our return, we and other travelers have been in a series of disputes with TA and various holiday suppliers. Recently, we settled a claim and received a considerable amount of money back. After settling, we tried to write a review on TA. My particular review is showing.
However it has been doctored and out of the 30 photos I uploaded to back up the review, no photos of the hotel have been released. TA have only chosen to upload photos of the surrounding area. In an attempt to get the photos out there again, my partner also wrote a review. This is not showing at all and still the photos showing the state of the hotel have not been uploaded. TripAdvisor are showing a hotel which is nothing short of a health hazard, as being 4.5*... And they are doing everything in their power to make sure that unsuspecting consumers continue to be duped into believing it to be true. As they have no customer support function that doesn't involve automated responses, it is impossible to find out why they only show the good reviews with nice photos... Now I believe that this will be the case of all reviews and are biased, proving that the consumer is not at the heart of their concerns.

Do not buy hotel reservations through TripAdvisor! I am a level-6 major contributor to Tripadvisor, writing reviews about hotels and restaurants and other places that I experience when I’m traveling. I was fooled into believing that Tripadvisor hotel reservation service is quite a bargain, well I was duped to say the least! First off, they do not have their own hotel reservation service, they sub out to a shady outfit called Cancelon, a sham company that seems to be sitting somewhere in India and when you call them you don’t get a corporate operator, only someone who responds with hello?
I booked a three night stay at Wyndham Grand Jupiter in Florida through Tripadvisor and only later on I found out that he was going through this Cancelon company. I was charged $458 for three night stay, only to find out that the hotel itself would have charged me only $345 including all taxes and fees and service charges. Once they take your money at Cancelon, your reservation will immediately become nonrefundable.
I tried to contact Tripadvisor by phone, but unfortunately I found out that you never get to speak to a live human being at Tripadvisor. I think they have become too big and too aloof to the needs of their members and contributors and it leaves a very bad taste in my mouth about this company that I’ve been contributing to for more than 10 years and I’m totally dismayed by their lack of care and support, making them sound like a very disingenuous company. When I contacted Cancelon, some Indian fellow answering the phone amid what sounded to be a very loud construction site tried to make me believe that hotel rates change every second! I have worked in the hotel industry and I do travel over 400,000 miles a year myself to know full well that such claims are totally baseless.

Stayed at two bad bed and breakfasts with glowing reports. Then we worked out that all negative reports were deleted by TripAdvisor at the owner’s insistence, creating impressions of much better establishments than what we recently experienced, Another tactic was for owner to switch property name. EFFECT Places with just glowing reports may not be what you think! We used to use TripAdvisor like a bible, but from now on, not anymore. Only when we see mixed TripAdvisor reviews will we consider a TripAdvisor hotel review. I.e. some good some bad reviews. What a trap!

Given some of my recent correspondence with TripAdvisor it is clear that many companies must be paying to be listed and others who do not pay are just not listed. I will look elsewhere for travel information and reviews given TripAdvisor's responses to this traveler.

My husband and I made a reservation in Puerto Vallarta for a 5 months rent, through TripAdvisor. The owner is ** for Bello Horizonte 1. The booking reference is **. The owner sent us an email a few days before departure to have a confirmation about our arrival, date and time, because in the contract he was to pick us up, drive us to the condo and give us the keys. We waited 3 hours at the airport. An airline representative phoned every 15 minutes to finally let him know his guest were waiting for him.
We had a 12 hours flight (3 planes), we were very tired when we arrived at the condo. We did not like what we saw, the condo was not what we expected, but much too tired to argue. The day after, through the concierge we tried to get in touch with the owner. He never answered back. No water going to the shower, etc etc... The whole condo was different from the advertisement. I have pictures and they will follow. Because he was not getting in touch with us and because we could never imagine spending 5 months in this condo, we took a taxi to a hotel where we spent 4 nights, hoping he would answer back our emails. He never did.
My husband has a heart condition. With all the stress involved, impossible to stay around. We booked a flight and we are back in Quebec. I have many pictures taken in Bello Horizonte 1 to let you know that the owner did not rent us the condo he advertised on TripAdvisor. Now the purpose of this email is to request a refund. Pictures follow. Pictures advertised and what was there.

I have advertised my rental property in Costa Rica for several years on 3 different sites. Two of them (Airbnb and VRBO) have been very good, but Flipkey was always a headache. They kept removing anything that was remotely personal, and sending me nasty messages suggesting I was giving away contact information and thus breaking my arrangement with them. This was always a struggle for me, and didn't happen on the other sites, as I want to give useful information (NOT my contact info) to prospective clients.
Anyway, the worst that happened was that I accidentally double booked my house for a couple of days. When I called TripAdvisor they asked if I could find another place for the 2 days of overlap and then the double booked clients could come in under the Flipkey reservation for the remaining 10 days of their reservation. They said they would not fine me for my error if I could organize it. It was a busy period for me but I spent a full day finding alternate accommodation for the 2 days.
However, when I tried to contact the client to discuss the plan with her, I was blocked out completely. The client was so upset that she withdrew her reservation because she had not heard back from me. Eventually I received a mail from her through Flipkey explaining this, even though I must have sent her 30 messages. I called TripAdvisor several times but they would not help. In the end I paid $100 fine but the worst part was all the work and attempts to reach the client in vain. And the client's frustration as she was very very upset. I will never advertise with TripAdvisor again!

I asked them to pull my listing from their website and was told I needed to do that myself. I tried to cancel everything, even my reviews on other properties, but my listing still shows up. Once I was transferred to AGODA website the rate changed to $86. I was very disappointed with your website and false advertising that is why I called Trip Advisor customer service immediately (around 10 30 pm Pacific time). They requested from me the screenshot of the website that I took promptly and I attached in the email. I would like to book this hotel at this rate. Their response after 2 weeks of me calling and inuring:
“Thank you for contacting Tripadvisor. I'm sorry you're frustrated with the difference in price. To help you understand why this may have happened, I can explain a little more about how Tripadvisor Price Search works. Every time you run a search, Tripadvisor sources the most up to date pricing from hundred of partners, and displays the results for you on our site. Once you've selected what you want, we direct you to that partner to complete the booking. Sometimes there are price changes that occur once you are on the partner's site. This can happen at any point, including during the final validation step of your purchase. Since Tripadvisor does not handle booking, we don't have a lot of visibility into when or why this is happening in your case.”

I have been a contributor on TripAdvisor for many years and did so to support fellow travelers. I earned several badges they give out and at one point they even sent me a t-shirt as a thank you gift for the popularity of my posts. I never paid much attention. I have advertised a townhouse that my family owns on Sanibel Island in Florida on a site called vacationhomerentals.com. Our listing was vacationhomerentals.com/67655. Well I noticed last year that we did not receive any listing requests which made no sense to me as I was usually flooded with them. What had changed is that I was getting requests from TripAdvisor referring to an account I knew nothing about. When I tried to contact vacationhomerentals to view my photos and great reviews, etc. the site presented to be shut down with no forwarding information which I had me quite perplexed.
I soon after received an e-mail from TripAdvisor stating that they were shutting my account down due to no responses when I am contacted by their customers. There was no return e-mail or phone number and I continued to be in a perplexed state trying to figure out what was going on. A few months later I received a call from a TripAdvisor representative trying to sell me a premium space upgrade on their site for my Sanibel rental. I explained to him that I had never advertised with TripAdvisor nor joined their site. I was informed that TripAdvisor bought vacationhomerentals' site and now have rights to my listing. He gave me a number to look at my listing on TripAdvisor which had one of my six reviews and none of my photos and also told me that TripAdvisor gets a portion of the rental costs.
I could not believe this. He could not give me a telephone number, to follow up, seriously!! Since this time, I have spoken with many people who have experienced the same. It is quite unbelievable and their way of handling things is to keep their telephone number private and not have any support as if they did, they would be required to tell people that they are a dishonest, deceitful business out to totally steal from people they are trying to covertly profit from deception. I remain furious and have lost a significant amount of money by their purchasing the site I had paid for my listing. Neither of them sent anything whatsoever about this move.

I'm having a difficult time with Tripadvisor. I've used them for years, I have accomplished 182 T.A. reviews and visited over 500 cities which they list. I've never had a problem until now with them. Most of my reviews have been positive, don't think I ever did a "terrible". Not long ago, I accomplished a rather mundane review of a resort only a day's travel from our home. I gave them an excellent. Unfortunately, in my narrative I included the website link for that establishment. The reason I did so was to refer readers to the website's pictures as my photos did not turn out. I know it is a no-no to use links, but normally T.A. puts up a link to the website of the establishment themselves. In this case they hadn't done so. So, I received an email asking that I remove the link and repost. Which I did. But no response, looks like they have blackballed me. Maybe not.
But this all got me to thinking. Here I've spent considerable time and energy over the years accomplishing detailed reviews of hotel accommodations, restaurants and attractions for them. What if something happens to Tripadvisor and all my work is gone? So I've begun doing duplicate and triple reviews of all my T.A. posts for the last year or so. If this all turns out okay I'll never do a T.A. review again unless I also publish it in at least one other location.
We also cruise a lot, passed the 600 days at sea mark last year. Tripadvisor doesn't do cruise reviews but they own Cruise Critic. There are only two sites that provide comprehensive cruise reviews, one is C.C. which is probably the best, second is Cruiseline. I always do an in depth review of our cruises, but I publish them in both forums. I should have done that from the beginning with Tripadvisor.

Our customer allowed smoking and used a champagne bottle with a note taped to the outside stating "ashtray, do not drink". It also had a skull on the note. This was all given to TripAdvisor.
The renter trashed our home and allowed smoking. In four years of renting, we have not retained a damage deposit. The customer service rep, when asked how I could improve the review to keep it up, will tell me that they cannot give me that information. How does that even make sense? I've edited the review countless times, and I've tried changing every possible thing in the review.
In the end, they just aren't going to keep a negative review up if a restaurant complains. I've confirmed this, as my mother also had a terrible experience there and left a review of her own. It, of course, was deleted by TripAdvisor. Yelp is far from perfect, but I posted the exact same review on that site, and it is still there, as is my mother's review. If it were truly a problem with the reviews themselves, I don't believe that Yelp would have kept them up. I believe that a review site which picks and chooses only the favorable reviews in order to keep the businesses happy constitutes false advertising. It is not reliable, and the ratings cannot be trusted.

I booked a long stay at an apartment in Bergamo, Italy via Trip Advisor Rentals for summer 2017. Although the apartment description was fairly accurate, there were some issues with it. However, what really spoiled it for me and left me thinking I won't be using TripAdvisor again to book accommodation -- and probably not to leave reviews either -- was the support I received from customer service over a payment dispute. According to the TripAdvisor listing, and the rental confirmation, the payment covered all aspects of my stay, i.e. "There should be nothing extra for you to pay locally". So I was surprised when the host asked me for 90 euros 'tourist tax' as I would have expected that to be included.
I contacted support, and initially they agreed with me, and so they contacted the host but she argued with them and they took her side and came back to me and told me I had to pay. I continued to argue with the host, but she was really aggressive about it and without any backup from the customer service people, despite the fact that my contract was pretty clear that there should be no additional taxes to pay on arrival, I paid the host in cash because I didn't want to get into trouble with the local police. I complained formally to TripAdvisor afterwards but they are not at all supportive and the latest point they made was that, "If you paid cash to the host then you're not covered by our payment protection." But how else are you supposed to pay when the host insists and there's no credit card machine at the apartment? So, I'd suggest you read the terms very, very carefully and assume you will get ripped off like I did if you book through TripAdvisor.

Some six months in advance my wife and I booked a hotel through TripAdvisor for a hotel in Wyoming for two nights prior to the total eclipse in August 2017 - the Comfort Inn in Wheatland, WY, within the path of totality. We received a confirmation from them and follow-up emails on our trip. Three weeks prior to our trip my wife decided to check the web for information on the hotel. To our shock, the website declared "hotel permanently closed." We called and discovered that, a few days before TripAdvisor took our reservation, the hotel was sold to new owners. The new owners had completely booked the hotel for the dates in question and had no record of our reservation.
We attempted to contact TripAdvisor without success - It seems they have NO way to register customer questions/requests/complaints. A week before our trip we received an automated email advising us that the reservation had been canceled. By then we had found new, much more expensive, accommodations. I would like to register my rating of TripAdvisor at ZERO, but where will people see such a rating? The website offers no possibility to tell even the company, much less the public, of the kind of fraudulent "service" that you may very likely receive in doing business with TripAdvisor.

It used to be a cool site that you could count on for decent reviews of restaurants and places as you travel. No more. Now it's just another ** site trying to sell you hotel rooms. Which means 1: you can no longer trust reviews since they are selling stuff and have a big incentive to skew the reviews. 2. You can't even find the reviews you want since they are so busy trying to sell you crap. Since they are one of about 35 travel sales sites I give them 6 months before they go under. When they were a review site, it was great. Way better than Yelp, but they decided to tank that business and try to sell stuff. The owl is also super stupid. Who is running this ** company?

I go outside and find the guest had taking our furniture outside and was holding a conversation with 4 others. I told the guest that we had a complaint about noise and that to solve the problem they would have to go in their motel rooms. Guest made a very negative comment on TripAdvisor about my requesting him to take the noise inside the rooms. I requested TripAdvisor to take this review off. They said no.
Another occassion; Guest's husband had a fight and beat his wife, the wife came in the motel office at around 11:00 pm and asked that we call the police because he was beating her. We called the police, they came, arrested the husband for family assault, another guest wrote a review on TripAdvisor with a 1 rating (worst) because the police came and woke him up. The owner, got in between the fighting couple so he could not beat her anymore, then trespassed the man who did the beating but let the guest stay. How is this a fair review?
Unfortunately, TripAdvisor has big clout with the general public. Every bad review can cost the motel thousands of dollars. True and valid reasons are fine. The ones that are in no control of the motel are not fine. They need to not always let a reviewer hurt a motel when the motel had not caused or mishandled a situation.I want these two very poor, very irresponsible reviews off TripAdvisor. We run a top notch motel, not a huge motel but a very nice customer oriented customer service business. Everything we do is for the customer/guests' interests. We always try to solve problems the best we can, pricing is good and no one ever gets cheated in any way ever. A guest has a complaint, we fix it.

I did complain to booking.com and they said I should have read the small print. Whilst most allow you to cancel and there is no charge this company I booked with do. So when I had to cancel because of mum's illness and my deposit was not given back I wrote a review on TripAdvisor stating I could not comment on the place itself but I could give my experience on having to cancel and lose my deposit because if your mother dying is not a good reason I don't know what is. I have written a few reviews on TripAdvisor over the years, and never had a problem with my reviews being posted. In this case, I wrote a review on TripAdvisor about an expected charge to our credit card after check out by Nugget Casino Resort, Sparks NV. Basically, at check in we were not informed to expect any additional room charges so when we received notification of a charge from our credit card company a day after check out, we were surprised and concerned it was in error. To summarize, the TripAdvisor review stated that we attempted to contact Nugget but kept being place on hold. My review was intended to alert other travelers of this fee that is charged after check out. We finally reached someone at Nugget who explained it was a resort fee.
About two weeks later, I attempted to go back into TripAdvisor to update (or delete and repost) my review to explain that it was a legitimate charge, but thought they should have told us to expect the charge (which would have avoided the unnecessary calls). That's when I learned that my review was "pending review." I emailed TripAdvisor and was initially told that they were unable to locate my review. Then I was told that it didn't meet their posting guidelines/policies. I read the guidelines but couldn't figure out what was triggering it to be pulled. The TripAdvisor representative "could not" give me the specific reason. So, I wrote a revised review on July 29, 2017. I did state that this was the second review submitted but that the first one wasn't posted. Interestingly on August 1, the second review was "flagged" and not posted, and I received the same "integrity response" from TripAdvisor again.
I can only guess what caused my reviews of Nugget Casino Resort to be "flagged." As mentioned, TripAdvisor will not give me the reason(s), and the links to their posting policies/guidelines didn't help. TripAdvisor, besides the system generated email below, hasn't attempted to resolve the issue with me. I am now considering deleting my TripAdvisor account.

To this, I suggest, they may be responsible for "restraint of trade," which is illegal in the US. I refused to give them this info.
I will say of other sites I use to "show" my property, they are the only ones who collect from visiting guests well in advance - in some cases as much as a year, but will not forward the money to the owners until the day after the guest arrives. In short, they use the guests' or my money for up to a year in some cases. My risk is having the guest cancel at the last minute for which I get nothing AND I cannot advertise availability expecting the guest to use our home. I have asked to speak to someone in authority (apparently out of Oxford, England) to which they would not agree. In July 2017 (ten months after I wrote the review), I received an email from Tripadvisor advising me that my review did not meet the guidelines because it wasn't "authentic guest reviews of first hand experiences or second hand information or hearsay."
I wrote to customer support to ask what this meant and why it took Tripadvisor 10 months to advise me of this. Emmanuel ** responded and repeated the guidelines verbatim, but did not address the time lag. I asked again to explain what this meant because my review was a reflection of my experience and to address the time lag. Bistra replied this time, again, accusing my review of hearsay and said that Tripadvisor receives thousands of emails each minute and it is very hard to check every review at the moment when it was sent.
I find this very unusual that Tripadvisor would single out this one review of mine (I've posted both positive and negative reviews over the year) and then advise me 10 months after I posted it. I also find it odd that Tripadvisor is contesting my experience when everything I wrote was based on first-hand knowledge and not hearsay. That's when I googled and found all of these other recent experiences people have had with Tripadvisor. This surprised me because I thought it was a reputable service, but their pattern of singling out people's negative reviews, lack of customer service, and their rental/lodging mismanagement has confirmed my decision not to use them anymore.

Today someone named Godfry called us and told us that our listing had been taken offline because we were not following their Terms and Conditions. The discussion was very circular and he kept changing his statements to us when we questioned him.
We paid for a 2 year subscription back in Feb 2016 a ridiculous amount of $718, which was probably close to 400 - 500% higher than what we were paying with VacationHomeRentals. When we told him to close us out and refund the balance of our subscription, he refused, stating that we 'had' to correct the 'problems' with our account and then it would be online again. The items that he said were in violation, were in fact properly in place on our listing. He said that he put in a request for us to re-activate our account. We got an email from them saying they had changed our account to a 'Free Listing' Account. And then we got another email saying that our 'Free Listing' Account had been changed to an 'Annual Subscription', and they wanted us to Pay all over again for something we've already paid for.
Really!!! This outfit is a total SCAM. STAY AWAY from it if you were previously using VacationHomeRentals. There's other sites out there where you can advertise your vacation properties. I have placed 130+ reviews on TripAdvisor. Each time I get on the site it becomes more and more annoying. I often try to post multiple reviews after a trip and, lately, it has started making you sign in 2-3 times after EACH review. Also each time you change screens it requires a sign-in. It is now next to impossible to add businesses that aren't already there. Short suggested reviews that are completed never show up. Forget trying to contact them about anything. I would have told them directly of the issues but there is no place to do it and I got tired of signing in NINE times trying to find a location to communicate. I am not going to be a inspired to review in the future and I have never used them to book because of others who have reported issues with booking. Reviews are the basis of your business. Make it easy to do, like it used to be. Not a royal pain!

I paid for a vacation rental in Florida at 5 miles Disney, spacious villa on January 10, 2017. The full amount was pending on my credit card immediately. I received a text message at 11:48AM stating the owner has edited your booking. The owner asked for almost $100 more than what was quoted on TripAdvisor's site. I was trying to stay in my budget, so I deleted one day off my vacation. I paid the price that was advertised for the second time. However, at 12:39PM, I received another text message stating that the owner has edited my booking. I paid the owners asking price once again. After paying the additional fee twice, I received a text message again at 12:55PM. However, this time it stated "Unfortunately, the owner has canceled your booking". After all that I went through with this particular vacation rental, I figured that's fine, I'll just look for another one.
So I did. I found another vacation rental in Florida and paid part of the fee for that one assuming that the money from the first vacation rental would be refunded to me since the owner canceled my booking. I checked my account the same day and the money was still pending. I checked my account the very next day and the money was still pending. I decided to contact the owner of the vacation rental to ask for my refund. I sent the owner a message. The owner told me that she didn't cancel my booking. I explained to her that I received a message stating that "Unfortunately, Sai (The owner) has canceled your booking." I advised her that because of that, I found another one.
Neither the owner of the property nor TripAdvisor is willing to give me back my money. I lost $657 on this trip and my trip is still canceled. My trip was scheduled for July 4th and in less than 2 days, I lost out on my money. Then, to top it off, my next scheduled trip that I put a $217.92 deposit on is scheduled with TripAdvisor as well. I don't feel comfortable giving these people my money nor doing business with them. They are a fraudulent company. However, their customer service department told me that I will lose out on that money as well if I cancel. They are extremely unprofessional and unreliable. Horrible company.

Do not use TripAdvisor for booking your reservation!!!! They advertise there are not any fees to use their site. Totally wrong!!! I recently booked a cottage for a week in Prince Edward Island, Canada and only found out after paying a 50% deposit plus the booking fee that they charged a booking fee of $163.13, or 14.5% of the weekly rate for the cottage. The remaining 50% had to be paid 28 days before the scheduled check-in date. If I were to cancel, I would be refunded only half of the cottage rate and none of the booking fee. If I did not pay the second 50% twenty-eight days prior to check-in, they would automatically cancel my reservation. If I had booked directly with the owner, I would have avoided the booking fee, would have paid a deposit of 30% rather than 50% and would have paid the remainder only when I checked in. A fairly expensive lesson!!
On top of all this, TripAdvisor doesn't pay the owner until I check in, so they have the use of my money for a couple of months at no cost to them. What a bunch of scammers! In actual fact, I had already contacted the owner and left a voicemail requesting the reservation, but when I didn't hear from them right away because they were not at home for the day, I was concerned about losing their last available week in July. TripAdvisor appeared as a pop-up on my computer, advertising no fees for using their site, so I decided to book through them. TripAdvisor contacted the owner via texting to their mobile and the owner accepted the booking with them prior to their arriving home and getting my voicemail. Live and learn. I recommend very strongly against using TripAdvisor for any bookings!!!!

I searched for gites to rent on TripAdvisor and booked one that promised 4 bedrooms in the area we wanted to go for the weekend. The cost was the similar to another gite I had booked in March this year. TripAdvisor were prompt in taking my payment and sending me a receipt confirming the 4 bedroom property had been booked. I spoke with the owner by email and she said she would wait at the property to give us the key.
On arriving at the property I was surprised to find the owner and all her family and 2 huge dogs all there waiting. She showed us round and then showed us our room and told us there were a few students and a family staying in the other rooms. My friend and I did not want to share a room let alone a bed and after telling the owner we needed 2 rooms we ended up leaving and finding a hotel. By the time we returned home and I contacted tripadvisor the owner had updated her listing to say it was a B&B. I emailed them my receipt showing that I had booked the 4 bedroom place but they refused a refund as 'the advert is now quite clear'. I feel that I have been conned. Beware of tripadvisor.

You can't even reply to their response, and their responses are a bunch of templates with all the big words that doesn't make any sense. I have a holiday house which I have let through TripAdvisor for three years. It is a superb property, immaculately maintained and cleaned and I have worked hard to keep it at the highest standard. As a result I have had 43 reviews all of which are rated excellent/5*. However, TripAdvisor have refused me a 'Certificate of Excellence', even though many other properties in the area with far fewer reviews have this badge to help with their bookings.
When I asked TripAdvisor about this they said it was because of the type of listing I have with them, and I would have to change from the 'annual' type whereby I pay a subscription and then there are no further fees, to the '3%' route which in actual fact results in both the owner AND the guest/holidaymaker paying TripAdvisor extra booking fees. This is just a cynical ploy to get customers to change to TripAdvisor's preferred listing method, I suspect so they can make more money as a result.

They allow reviews to be published that are inaccurate and blatant lies - providing 100% proof to them to show how the review is fake means nothing to them. They are destroying a lot of small businesses, but tbh - who reads that rubbish on their site? I think a lot of serious reviewers don't go to their platform, but to Trust Pilot... She and her family rented our property for 3 days for the occasion of her son's wedding, and now they have no place to stay.
I checked listings under Yuma, Arizona, and sure enough, our listing appeared. It is also still listed in Merida, Mexico. I called customer service to explain this terrible mistake, and to request a refund for the renter. I received a follow up email saying the renter would be refunded the money, but I will be charged a $150. cancellation fee. I'm an owner of 2 vacation properties. Originally, TripAdvisor and their multiple websites offered an ideal platform to advertise. In summary of a year's worth of tracking and some additional research on my part, it appears TripAdvisor creates fictitious inquiries and sends them to their paying client's account to inflate metrics and make it to appear that your paid subscription is producing quality results. After one year of tracking on a separate spreadsheet it appears that TripAdvisor inquiries has resulted in 5% of my complete revenue. Furthermore, their subscription membership increased from $350 (I received a $50 coupon) to now $599. I have not received any new inquiries in 1.5 months.
When I called 10 days ago to inquire about a reduction in my annual subscription (due at the end of this month) and to voice my concern regarding lack of inquiries and 'quality inquiries' that lead to actual bookings, they said they could not reduce the subscription. After my phone call, strangely enough - inquiries come to BOTH my rental properties almost daily since, with similar dates, similar vague language - like 'Would like to know more about property'. All my email responses have netted ZERO RESPONSES. I can say with almost 100% certainty - these are fictitious inquiries that are being pushed out from TripAdvisor's call center. I believe through some further research that some of the IP addresses are coming from the TripAdvisor Philippines call center. It seems their tactic of sending bogus inquiries for the most part is a collaboration of fictional information found on the internet.
In one case, they used someone's real phone number (most of the phone numbers are dead-end, automated VM), and the person I reached thought I was selling them something - and that were totally caught off guard that they sent in an inquiry to our vacation property the other day, and that they are not interested in whatever I'm selling them. If you are a property owner and thinking of advertising with TripAdvisor, YOU MAY WANT TO THINK THROUGH HOW MUCH OF YOUR TIME IS SPENT ANSWERING BOGUS INQUIRIES, and the decreased value TripAdvisor is offering. In addition to the false advertising they are committing. Fortunately, my neighbor is our former state representative and I will running this by him to understand if my research and documents may be of help to further investigate this situation.

We were told to cancel the booking which we did and called TripAdvisor to escalate the issue because the owner was not ready to refund the money. We called TripAdvisor at least 30 times over a period of 3 to 4 months and each time we called we had to go over the whole matter and all they did was say they will call back which they never did.
Finally, they agreed to have a 3 way conversation between owner, us and TripAdvisor. This was a big lie which never happened and they never even told us what they are up to. In January 2017 I wrote a negative review about a restaurant that was first rejected for not a valid reason. Their reasoning made no sense. I objected and they published it. Unfortunately each time they deny a review, you have to rewrite it, they do NOT reactivate it. They have it in their system, so I am not sure why this is not done. I rewrote the review, it was published and the manager/owner responded. The response was ridiculous, claiming it was a misunderstanding due to language issues because I wrote the review in English, he assumed (?) I did not speak the local language. I do, I am a native of that country, living in the US. All my reviews are written in English.
You cannot respond to the manager, so the review now for the readers made no sense. I had to make clear to the readers the manager was wrong and the restaurant was lousy. TripAdvisor suggested I remove and rewrite the review, which is what I did. Surprise, surprise, They rejected it again and since then, about a month now, I have been trying to speak to a supervisor to finally get a result. If you write to the customer service online, you will repeatedly get the same form response from different people. Based on what I wrote the response makes no sense, they suggest to do something that was already done, so it is clear no one ever reads the emails but they each time close the case, because according to them "the problem was resolved". My problem was NOT resolved yet I cannot get a response. No my emails are being ignored.
To get through to a customer service rep by phone is impossible. The 800 number will get you to a site that does NOT have live help. Sadly TripAdvisor is now a site with human robots, instead of thinking customer service reps, who do not respond to your questions, they read some assigned scripts and your problem is never addressed. I suggest to write a review only if you have a lot of patience and a lot of free time to deal with TripAdvisor. This site is horrible.

Noticed there were no reviews which I usually rely on but the price and description were what we're looking for so I decided to go ahead and reserve it anyway. Noticed a few discrepancies (location and bed count) in the listing and brought that to the attention of the owner. We corresponded a few times and then several weeks later (Apr. 13) I received a notice from the owner that the house was no longer available and he was pulling his listing from TA due to they "keep moving his house across the lake and discounting the rate." I was unable to respond back to him so I clicked around to find out what I needed to do or who to call to get my credit. I read that I would receive it in 7 days.
After checking the account after 10 days and 2 e-mails to the company with no response to my requests, I called and after several attempts to speak to a human about this I finally spoke with one who said my husband needed to be present for it was his name on the credit card. I had to call back and go through the same agonizing process to reach another representative who I had to explain the whole experience to since they don't seem to keep good records of these situations. I was told the owner had to tell them he canceled and hadn't done that yet even though I was cut off from communication with him and his listing was pulled from the site. The representative told me we were double booked. (I think he got a better offer and took it and so screwed us). They said they would send me an e-mail with a case number and so at my request, I offered to stay on the line until I received this, which after about 10 minutes I did. No explanation was given as to why my e-mails were ignored. I was simply asking for confirmation of this incident and proper resolution. I had been letting my cottage with TripAdvisor (originally HolidayLettings) for nearly 7 years. All was good under HolidayLettings until TripAdvisor took control. Without going into every last detail of how poor they have become I will be brief and give readers the main reasons why I am no longer with them. My subscription renewal was just about doubled this year with no explanation at all. I did reply to an email that was sent to me requesting an explanation, expecting all the usual pathetic reasons they normally give you, but what I actually got was nothing. They could not even be bothered to respond to this valued customer that has been handing cash over to them for the previous 6 years. I have become very aware of what TripAdvisor are doing. They do not want owners paying subscriptions as they can make much more cash by forcing owners to use their pay as you book method.
The service charge as they call it adds substantial costs to the holidaymaker unless the owner drops the cost of the renting the cottage. They have got the nerve to suggest that you advertise for free using this method. True only if guests are prepared to pay up to 15% more for their holiday, but of course adding 15% or so to the cost of your cottage is bound to result in lower bookings, hence it's not free. The bottom line is that they are forcing costs up considerably for holiday makers. As a subscription payer you were also subject to having your advert dropped down the list of cottages advertised and giving potential customers the view that your booking was only safe if you booked through the TripAdvisor platform and not to the owner direct, which was very insulting.
The other problem with TripAdvisor is that if you have a problem as an owner you have very little chance of contacting anyone. Every route you try sends you around in circles on their helpdesk which is as I have found incredibly frustrating and never answered my questions. So be aware, as a holiday home booker with TripAdvisor, you are paying a very high service fee for very little service. I booked a holiday last year through TripAdvisor and paid well over £200 to them as part of the cost, for what? No more letting my cottage through them or booking a holiday through them.

He responded with minutes left and it did not give us enough time to cancel. The landlord then informed us there would not be enough beds. At this point we were already international and had patchy phone and internet service .

When I got there the owner of the house didn't even know his house was for rent at TripAdvisor. BE CAREFUL TRIPADVISOR HAVE LOTS OF ADS FOR VACATION HOMES THAT ARE JUST FAKE. Don't rent through TripAdvisor because if you get there and the owner say his house is not for rent you will lose your money 100% and there is no way you can get this refunded to you. TripAdvisor is okay in principle, however should you have the audacity to criticize their "world's best hotel" then your review will not be published. This demonstrates a degree of bias which would add to my suspicions that there is a financial incentive involved. Especially when it turns out that the hotel is vastly overrated. I have closed my account and vowed to never look up any establishment on TA again.

They have doubled the subscription on Flipkey (from $299 to $599) without prior notification. They lied when they said they had sent emails to homeowners: I keep records of all of my correspondence with TA, and such an increase would not have escaped my attention.
When I asked what would justify such an increase, they said they had made major improvements on their website (I still don't see which ones). Period. HomeAway/VRBO actually dropped their subscriptions to $350 no matter the listing. It's based on the homeowner's efficiency to run his/her listing. Fair. Their customer support, always located in the US, is very good and extremely responsive. There's no doubt where I want to place my money when it comes to advertise my vacation rental properties.

I am simply a consumer, and in the past, I have relied on TripAdvisor for advice while traveling. Since I have used this advice, I also feel obligated to give back to the community by leaving reviews of businesses that provide exemplary or horrible service. Well, I had a very bad experience with a foreign tour company that has a 5 star rating on TripAdvisor. I wanted to share my experience with travelers, so I wrote my own review. First, this was very hard to publish. It kept getting rejected. Then, after many revisions, it finally posted. It was posted for about 8 months, and it was my most popular reviews with many helpful votes. Then, I went back on the site, and it was gone. Just gone! I didn't delete it.
So, I contacted TripAdvisor, and asked them why it was deleted. I was told that "We do not post reviews that include things you have overheard from other guests or your account of another party's experience." I said that my review didn't include any of that, and could they point me to the deviant content. I received this reply, "I cannot give you the exact phrase. I cannot give it to your because the information is proprietary." (Yes, that is what was written with typos and all.) So, I edited it again, and tried to post. It was rejected again claiming that some guideline was violated. This is very disappointing for a variety of reasons. First, the business tried to offer me money to take down my review. I refused, but it got taken down anyhow by TA. Second, I can no longer trust TA's reviews. Consumers beware! The reviews on TA are definitely biased. It is very hard to publish poor reviews of companies.

In August 2016 I made a reservation through FlipKey (a division of TripAdvisor) for a 2 bedroom, 2 bath condo at the Boca Raton Condominiums located just off of South Las Vegas Blvd in Las Vegas, NV. My reservation was for four senior citizens and I specifically needed this location because it was just a block away from The South Point Casino where I was participating in the USBC National Bowling Tournament on March 8th and 9th of 2017. I made the reservation early for three reasons: (1) I knew that NASCAR races were in town that same week (along with other activities) and demand for housing would be high and more costly, (2) I wanted a location convenient to South Point, and (3) I had friends and relatives to visit so I had to plan our time right.
We were flying in from Orlando FL and our friends traveling with us were flying in from Atlanta GA. Once the housing accommodations were set we purchased our airline tickets and prepaid for a rental car. We had our plans all set to go for our vacation from March 5th through March 10th, 2017. The condo we reserved was right in our price range along with being in the right location.
Roughly two and a half weeks before we were going to travel I received a phone call from TripAdvisor leaving a message on my phone stating that my condo reservation had been canceled and my prepaid funds would be returned to me. When I called back I reached a different person who told me "THE OWNER" had canceled my reservation, in spite of my contract, and TripAdvisor would help me find another place to stay. When I asked WHY it was canceled I was told the owner had the right to do it. No other reason. So I called the Boca Raton Condominiums and spoke to the property manager who told me that my reservation was not canceled and was still in his computer. He then told me they were having some trouble with TripAdvisor and couldn't get into their reservation system. He told me he would look into it and call me back.
I called TA back and reached a different person. I asked "why I was lied to and why did YOU cancel my reservation"? I was told someone would call me back. After several phone calls and speaking to different people it finally was admitted that TripAdvisor made the unilateral decision to cease business with this property owner and decided to cancel all pending reservations. There was no consideration as to how this would impact people like me who had made their plans way in advance. They just did it unilaterally! I received a multitude of apologies and the offer to help me find another suitable location.
I explained that we had to have a 2 bed / 2 bath in the vicinity of South Point and that as retired people on a fixed income the $480 we paid for this unit was the top end of our budget. I also explained that at this late date a suitable replacement would be just about impossible unless TripAdvisor intended to pay the difference in rental costs for us. I received no response to that suggestion... only another apology. Then TA started emailing other properties to me and followed up with phone calls as to suitability. It was ridiculous! The first two properties were priced at $6000 and $4000 for the five days. Other listings were equally bad. Many were at a distance and others were not the accommodations we needed.
I did received back our prepaid money from TA promptly, but now I faced a totally ruined vacation! I finally found a townhouse 30 minutes from South Point in the older part of Las Vegas where homeless people walked the streets all night and ambulance and police sirens screamed throughout the night. It was horrible, but we told the owners it was fine so as not to hurt their feelings. All of our plans had to be changed and we got very little sleep. I bowled terrible in the tournament because of all of the anxiety and pressures, and we have TripAdvisor to thank for ruining our vacation. We would have been better off staying home, but then we would have lost our airfare and car rental prepayments.
The last conversation I had with a TripAdvisor representative was again filled with apologies, but no real offers to "MAKE THINGS RIGHT". I suggested to them that a reputable company who was truly concerned about their customers would have first let them participate in the decision if they wanted the reservation canceled, and then if it was they should pay the difference in cost for making that decision totally on their own with no consideration whatsoever as to how the customer would be affected. Apparently TripAdvisor doesn't care one bit about their customers! The world needs to know how this company operates!

I am a business owner with a business listing. We are a small family run homestay, and we had one review that just made no sense at all. What I believe happened was that the reviewer put the review on the wrong page. I contacted TA (we pay them 1200US/year for a business listing) and asked them if they could please ask the review to produce a confirmation of booking which we give to everyone which would have confirmed their stay. Their complaints were so "unique" and I could not find a match for this alleged 2 hour check-in then checkout due to our place being "unbearable". It took TA one month to do nothing. After numerous calls to them one customer service agent said, and I quote "we do not do fact checks." I have had so many issues with them and their preferred answer to most of my inquiries has been: "due to our client's privacy we cannot disclose any information."
First off, I AM your client. Secondly, I am not asking for any contact info. One of my inquiries were about authenticating a review. We are also on Airbnb and whenever there is an issue there, Airbnb are not only fair, but swift in their reply and even though sometimes the outcome is not in my favor they at least have the decency to explain WHY. TA's response is nothing more than a "we don't care, goodbye" - response said in other words. More and more people are seeing TA for what it has become, a money-making machine that is neither credible nor helping consumers OR business owners. I have cancelled my business listing and will never work with them again.

In fact, looking at the other 300 restaurants listed, if we applied the criteria, many would be removed. No plausible explanation has been given. Sad to see that there are some dark issues looming behind this company. I have 3 cabins in the area of Pigeon Forge TN. In addition to accounts with Home Away/VRBO, I have had accounts with Flip Key & Vacation Home Rentals (VHR) for several years & have been pleased with both Flip Key & VHR. Last year, TripAdvisor bought those Flip Key & VHR. Things went well in the beginning because TripAdvisor allowed the companies to continue their past practices. However, this year TripAdvisor put in their own rules. As a result, my February & March bookings dropped from over $6,000 to $0. Granted, these are the slowest months of the year, but in the 12 years I have been these cabins, I have never had $0 bookings for these months.
TripAdvisor instigated a "Free Listing Plan". They still have the old "Subscription Plan", the "Free Listing Plan" has priority. I listed with both & with the "Free Listing Plan", my properties we listed in the 1st 50-100 listings. Under the "Subscription Plan," my properties were listed around # 300 of 1,000 properties. In other words, no one is going to see my properties that far down the list. Under the "Free Listing Plan", all bookings MUST be done through TripAdvisor & they charge a heft fee for their services. I only received 1 potential booking. For that booking, I was to receive about $700. TripAdvisor would receive about $130.
As a property owner, the biggest complaint that I have is that I can no longer communicate with renters. All contact MUST go through TripAdvisor. If either the potential renter or I put in a phone number, email address, etc., the entire message is blocked which is a problem because I can't explain things to renters. For example, I don't charge a cleaning fee for stays of 3 nights or more, but since the TripAdvisor information form I have to complete only asks whether or not I charge a cleaning fee at any time, I include that in the charges since I do charge for less than 3 nights. TripAdvisor then charges the fee for any stay & I can't explain that to a potential renter. In addition, listing priority is based on the # of bookings we accept. In my case, I'm not getting any inquiries. I can't get bookings without inquiries, so I have a low priority listing which means I don't get inquiries.
Furthermore, trying to reach someone in customer service is not easy because their website has no place to contact them. I tried about an hour the other night before I finally found a phone number to contact Flip Key. I then got a customer service representative who I could barely understand because I'm not from India. I used to think that Home Away/VRBO was bad & referred everyone I could to Flip Key or VHR. However, with the changes that Trip Advisor has made them look good. My subscription expires in April & my question to TripAdvisor is "Why should I keep your services?" Currently, TripAdvisor is an expense with no return, so there's no point in continuing their services.

For those that don't realize this, you can search for reviews of restaurants and hotels on TA. If you compare the reviews vs. its other major competitor, Yelp, you will see TA has a lot more reviews. There are a few reasons for that. TA has been around longer than Yelp and TA tends to shape reviews much more so, recently than Yelp. If you write a negative review on TA and even though you are a seasoned reviewer, there is a good chance your review will not be posted or if it does, it will get flagged for removal by either the owner or someone affiliated with the business. While the exact same review on Yelp remains. If you also pay attention, you will see that management of the business gets the last say when someone posts a negative review. There is no opportunity for the reviewer to have a final rebuttal.
Again, TA is geared toward their advertisers and business owners. This is a form of bullying and as a result, many people will tend to only post positive reviews instead of negative ones because they fear being confronted by the business. A few years ago, there was a survey done by a travel company that claimed that 98% of over 3000 TA users felt satisfied that the reviews on TA reflected their own personal experience. That's an incredible amount. If one took the time and obtained the raw data, you would see a different result. Bottom line is that TA seems to me at least, have very bias reviews and is plagued by either exaggerated or bogus positive reviews, many of which I feel are from paid reviewers. Of course, there are paid reviewers who go around trashing a business as well. It's a big money making business for these "ghost writers."

It is obvious that if you sent notices to my spam folder that you wanted me to miss the deadline and then use this excuse to penalize me. There are many companies out there who value their customers and offer "no deposit AND free cancellation"!! The fact that I have gone to the trouble of research, book and paid over a thousand dollars in deposit is an obvious and clear statement that I intended to go ahead with the booking and would pay if I had received proper notification from you. Sending emails to my spam box is not proper notification and a company such as yours must have in place a second method of follow up or bringing attention to an urgent matter - again reiterating the message that you do not care whether the customer pay or not because either way, your company stand to win and the customer stand to lose. Buyer beware of renting a vacation house through the TripAdvisor. We had a terrible experience renting a so-called beach house for $200/night for one week in Baja California. We arrived in a dark rainy night, coming across the following undisclosed issues. When we opened a case with TripAdvisor, all we received was lip service (Case No: **). Currently, the Trip Advisor is advertising the same place for $250/night by the same owner. We seriously hope that you don't have to go through the same experience. This is especially true, when TripAdvisor blatantly ignores serious health-related issues such as mice droppings (a Hantavirus concern), and continues to advertise the same property to the public. I have attached a few of more than a dozen pictures that we forwarded to Trip Advisor to no avail.
The roof was leaking into the house in several places. The heating system was not working. The hot water system working sporadically. WIFI not working in spite of our efforts. Microwave oven was not working. The regular oven not operational. There were no cooking utensils, as promised. There were lots of mice droppings in the kitchen and pantry (Hantavirus concern). We discovered this one the next morning.

I went to TripAdvisor to research hotels. I found that sorting by price and choosing a brand that I'd stayed before worked for me. I didn't use the sort by rating feature or read any reviews. I'd only do that if I was comparing brands where there was more of an unknown factor. Although, I do want to make sure there are more than a few reviews so I know the hotel is being used. There were a couple cool features that made TripAdvisor stand out for me. They let me book my hotel using my TripAdvisor account, which they didn't used to offer. Also, if I write a review about the hotel I stayed at, the Trip will send me a $20 Amazon gift card.

Last August I decided to give it a try to TripAdvisor Vacation rental. Decided for a place in Phuket, Thailand and paid the deposit. Everything schedule for December. November, before paying the balance, I sent a note to the local company asking to confirm my rental. Then I got the "NO, we don't have any reservation under your name or Tripadvisor for this properties. Sorry we are sold out." After many calls to the customer service, I had to put them in contact to the Thailand rental company to confirm that there was no place for me to go.
Then, about 10 days later I got the deposit back. Then, started again to try to find a place to stay and found one in a reputable rental website. However, much higher cost, since was just 20 days before my vacation. And heard from TripAdvisor staff that they can do nothing in this case. Looks like the deposit is just a one way thing. Now imagine if I just have trusted them and paid the balance and get ready to travel, arriving in Phuket and finding out that we don't have a house? Very poor business model. Stay away!

I tried to book three times to go on vacation, and 3 owners, kept canceling my dates as people already there, wanted to add in additional dates at the last second. They sent me the quote, then suddenly I get "canceled"??? It's super annoying when you THINK you are "locked in" with a pricey deposit only to have to scurry to find someplace else. They ended up telling me about another "studio" in the same building, which I took, despite the one terrible review. Time was running out. It's the same price as the "updated" unit, I got booted from.
Right now, I have waited 2 days for the owner to tell me if "their taxi driver" can pick me up or not. I am handicapped and I made it known. NOT RESPONDING to a customer who has paid you in full is just wrong. TA sent me a link to get 20% off from Viator, but they are subcontractors of TA. They have airport transfers that you have to pay in full ahead of time. The day sailing excursions have NO DETAILS about where the pick up is, and there is no place to ask and no number to call. If there is no phone number, that is a huge red flag.

When we saw the offer for a Super 8 with excellent reviews, close to where we wanted to be and an excellent price, I booked. The hotel stay was wonderful. The price I was charged was anything but! How $57.00 dollars a night for a three-night stay turned into a $318.00 for the three nights is inexcusable! I called customer service, their service through CANCELON. I was told it was impossible, I could have never seen or been offered that rate. Wrong!!! Two people in different cities viewed the offer for $57.00.
Customer service seemed to be in another country and pretty much all but told me I was seeing things that were not there. We were happy with our accommodations and decided to extend our stay. Guess what??? We were charged less for the additional night than we were charged per night through TripAdvisor. $77.00 per night for the last minute additional night rather than the BAIT AND SWITCH PRICE OF TRIPADVISOR OF $106.00 A far cry from the $57.00 per night advertised...

WARNING! Don't EVER, EVER, EVER book a reservation through Trip Advisor! If you do, be prepared to be offered rooms that are not available, have your reservation totally screwed up and pay a 20% fee for these "services". First of all, in no place do they inform you that you are being charged a 20% premium when you book through them. And then they KEEP sending you emails offering rooms that are not available or that your inquiry has expired when, in fact, one has already booked the room.
Book directly with the establishment. Trip Advisor does not communicate with the places they advertise so they are selling something they do not own and cannot deliver. After they cheat you, they will not refund the 20% they ripped you off for under any circumstances nor will they admit culpability. The customer service agent refuses to pass the customer up the chain to a superior after they refuse to take any action on your complaint. I have been on TripAdvisor for about 5 years, have written 98 reviews and got lots of helpful hint votes from other travelers. I was discouraged when I noticed some recent reviews had not been published about hotels I had stayed at. It had come down to a review I had written about an Irish bar in China, it was terrible, especially seeing a western man managing the place and parading his 3-year child around a smoky bar, notwithstanding the food was terrible and the service, the place deserved the negative review it got.
TripAdvisor had then decided to stop publishing my review (I've written about 4 negative reviews out of 98). TripAdvisor aside from being virtually uncontactable have only responded by saying it didn't meet their guidelines...? It's ridiculous that they have now even removed the review... it seems to me TripAdvisor is now a absolute con. They should be held accountable for removing legitimate reviews. They cannot be in the business. They are a pick and choose! And since that review they are not even publishing my other reviews. While traveling in France my wife & I tried to book an AirBNB in La Rochelle through TripAdvisor. I went through their site (big mistake!) instead of going through Air BNB. When I clicked through to 'Book it' (after I had entered my credit card information) a message came up saying the site was 'not available'. It clearly stated on the opening page that the AirBNB was available. Thinking I needed to move on, I clicked on my 2nd choice and came to the same message: 'not available'. I then called my 3rd choice, a hotel, and made a successful reservation there (which cost me nothing until I got to see the room and agreed to take it). We were on the road and driving, so I closed down the computer and we headed for La Rochelle. Once there, I opened the computer and saw 2 responses, one each from the owners of the AirBNB's confirming my reservations (and deposits). I immediately emailed both back, along with TripAdvisor to tell them the error.
The owners were both understanding but TripAdvisor denied any problem with their website and basically left me out to dry. To date we have been billed for the full deposits, over $500 – we understand there might be some cost but full deposits are total BS – we filed a PayPal claim and advised Visa to not pay, but both declared these legitimate because we missed the confirming emails and the billings went through. TripAdvisor required us to provide an email from them stating the sites weren't available (that they knew didn't exist). We couldn't provide because it was a message at the end of the purchase process, not an email, and it all went away when I closed the site. They would not budge and would not confess any problem with their website even though it's clear no one would make 3 separate reservations for the same day without something being very wrong. We will NEVER use TripAdvisor again and strongly advise others to steer clear.

We traveled to Roatan, Bay Islands, Honduras, Central America, during early November, 2016. We spent 10-nights in a house that had rats defecating all over outdoor furniture nightly and sometimes during the day. Ants invaded the kitchen at night. Worse yet, a local "caretaker" is allowed to live in one of two units for rent and in our case the "lower unit" was vacated by a very nice couple who departed a few days after we arrived, and to note we got along just fine with them, the rats and the ants. A much larger and intolerable pest showed up. Manu, a Roatan local that sells taxi/tour services arrived.
Long story short our minor problems at that house were altered for the worse. Manu is also a local pimp and traffics a young girl who stays with him. Safety lights, that were installed for obvious reasons, on the flight of stairs to the upper unit were disabled and when I inquired with Manu about these lights he told me flatly and unabashedly to, "Just use the patio light, you don't need the stair lights." Wrong answer.
We contacted the rental agency regarding the safety lights and the lies and harassment from that point on was absolutely horrid. We witnessed an agency maintenance man arrive two days later, argue with Manu, slammed the front door and ripped two 8' long tire ruts into lawn adjacent to the driveway as he departed the property (our car was parked behind Manu's van because he never left the property for 7-days/nights and we watched this a number of times, made his prostitute walk to the main road about 1/2 mile away over rugged, muddy terrain, and the maintenance guy had to park on the grass next to our car.
The next day after the lights were restored two of our devices were bumped off the router and Manu began arming and disarming a networked alarm system that makes loud audible noises that woke us at 3 am, so we stuffed a pillow over that nuisance. We didn't much care about the internet issue on two of our devices because we also had a laptop that logged on to the router just fine after the fact because Manu was unaware of it. He never saw it logged into the network, just our cell phones. We complained once and saw the "light debacle" go down and the ensuing retaliation from Manu. We were not about to complain again and wonder what else that jerk would do and say behind our back. We watched Manu throw his trash on the ground next to the trash can and he laid around all day watching TV and did absolutely nothing for the entire 7-days/nights we endured his ridiculous nonsense.
We subsequently tried to convey our issues with the rental agency (RoatanLifeVacationRentals) and we were treated very poorly and have lately learned of all the fabrications leveled at us. We contacted the owners who were not in the country at the time (home in Dallas/Ft Worth) and they refuse to answer or reply to our calls, emails and personal messages. We never once asked for any compensation nor threatened anyone with any coercive postings, but we have had a very difficult time with TripAdvisor refusing to allow our review of this rental. We are quite taken aback by what TripAdvisor allows within review content that is of a positive nature, yet if a traveler has an unfortunate experience and wishes to detail this in review, TripAdvisor continuously denies the negative review, no matter how benign and unmalicious the review is.
As a last recourse we have decided to take our issue to other entities that may or may not be able to assist us in our endeavor to relate our horrible experience to unwary travelers who do not deserve to pay thousands of dollars to be treated poorly and labeled liars for their troubles. This is unbelievable as we have never before been confronted with such a dispute and disregarded as we have. Our VRBO (short term house/condo rentals) record is impeccable and we are at a quandary as to how to convey our truthful experience to others without being called liars and blackmailers by the agency or owner who seem to have unfettered access to make up lies about guests. An example... The living room furniture isn't even close to what is being advertised in their listing. However the list of issues with that rental was endless for us. The furniture was the least of our problems and no one cares. Help??

We were greeted by dirty linens piled in front of the washing machine, dirty dishes in the sink, half eaten food in the refrigerator and freezer, no shower head in the bathroom, dirty toilet, yard infested by ants with ant hills every foot, etc. We had to leave and get an hotel room immediately. TA contracts its vacation rentals in France to Holiday Lettings.
I contacted them immediately and began a long process of trying to get our money back. During the time we were in France, French national television aired a program about this type of scam which showed a Holiday Lettings contract exactly like my contract! TripAdvisor and their contractor Holiday Lettings assert that they have a protection policy, but in the end they take no financial responsibility because they do not verify their listings, as they will tell you after a lot of stalling and time taken with phone calls and emails with a customer service representative.
They are only concerned with taking their cut of the price. Because there is no verification of properties and no financial responsibility for their listings, TripAdvisor and Holiday Lettings enable and facilitate fraud and the customer is left holding the bag in my opinion. I booked accommodation for 10 nights over the 2016 Xmas period at Villa Cloud Nine in Seminyak in Bali in February 2016 through TripAdvisor and I paid the 50% deposit in US dollars. I paid the balance of the rental fee at end of October 2016 and within two days of making the final payment the owner contacted me to advise that our accommodation booking had been cancelled because of planned maintenance works. In total I paid US$4,587.33 to TripAdvisor which cost me AUD$6,278.37.
In addition, I paid a further AUD$188.35 in bank fees giving a total cost of AUD$6,466.72. TripAdvisor refunded me the US$4,587.33 at current exchange rates which amounted to only AUD$5,984.40. So the end result is that the owner cancelled my booking and I am "out of pocket" AUD$482.32. I now have to find alternative accommodation in Bali only 5 weeks ago from our travelling date, with limited options available at exorbitant prices. It is wrong that I should be financially disadvantaged when the owner cancelled my booking.
I am not sure if the owner has been truthful about maintenance works being done during the peak rental period and I suspect that the owner has cancelled my booking so that they can take an alternative booking at a much higher rental fee. In fact, TripAdvisor told me the reason for the cancellation was a double booking and not maintenance works. TripAdvisor has turned a blind eye to the matter and appear to be not interested in finding out the truth behind the cancellation even thought it has cost me almost AUD$500.

We called and they said not to worry about it as the number traveling was under the occupancy limit. The owner of the property contacted us to confirm the travel number. He was also aware of the software issue concerning the occupancy levels. We had to cancel that booking due to a fire code. Although TripAdvisor admitted the problem to the property owner, TripAdvisor still wanted to keep 189 dollars as a channelization fee.
The owner of the property even argued in my favor in a conference call with them. They would not relent. The owner of the property went above and beyond to help us out to get us into a property so I would not have to pay the 189 dollars. TripAdvisor was no help. Have an old apartment? Want to fix it up quick and for free? Here's a great solution: join TripAdvisor as a property renter. Don't worry if your apartment is located in funky district. You can just change your address. List it in a nicer location than it really is on the TripAdvisor map. And raise the price! Then go fishing. After your catch pays you the full amount of the rental, email them the real address. The poor, naive traveler will make a lot of noise, claim this and that, but just talk to them a little bit. Then ignore them. Next, they'll probably go to TripAdvisor to complain to Customer Service. And guess what? TripAdvisor will support you because apartment owners are their prime customers. The traveler is the milk cow.
Now you got your money, but is that it? No, there's more. Don't forget to attach the high price tag and high security deposit as well. That will be important later. When your renter is ready to check out, do your walk-through and find something wrong. Find anything, even common items. You can find something! Okay, a few hints: A simple adjustment to the balcony door hinge, you could call a "broken glass door." The word "broken" gets you the award. Or if you find forgotten sock in your laundry machine, call it a "badly damaged" appliance. The variations are endless. Just emphasize destruction.
Send TripAdvisor all your claims, and get the whole security deposit in your own pocket. Why give that back? Guests will try anything to prove you're guilty, like recording everything on audio tape. No worries, TripAdvisor doesn't listen to that stuff. They'll reward you. But if you're not satisfied and want more cash, no problem. When your guests are ready to go to the airport, bring three people to the checkout process, be strong and argumentative. It works even better when your guests are two foreign women because they won't have a clue what's going on. Argue in your native language and get mad among yourselves. Be a strong management group (not less than 3 persons) and ask for cash right there on a spot. Hah, that can be quite intimidating! Now you know how to fix any property fast and for free! JOIN TRIPADVISOR!
P.S. This little story is based on real events that happened in October 2016 in Milan via Bramante, all arranged and negotiated courtesy of TripAdvisor. Through TripAdvisor, we booked Camilas casa en zona patrimonial UNESCO in Valparaiso, Chile, for 9/1-2/16. On 9/1, we spent 1.5 hours navigating Valparaiso's one-way hills searching for the place because its listed address (2-451 Urriola) was confusing. We had to climb two flights of stone steps, with our luggage. The apartment smelled of mold throughout. There was a square-meter hole in the flooring right in front of the bathroom, barely covered by boards and carpet remnants. None of those conditions had been mentioned in the ad for the apartment.
My wife got very upset about the prospect of staying there for two nights, and burst into tears. Camila seemed simpatica, kindly helped us book a hotel room in Via del Mar, and said she'd cancel our reservation (which she never did, according to TripAdvisor) and refund our money. When we sought a refund through TripAdvisor, after getting home (9/9), for weeks Camila denied having received any of the $172.80 rent we had paid in advance. (TripAdvisor had, in fact, paid her $155.20 on 9/2/16.)
Then her attitude hardened. She called my wife a super crying old woman, criticized us for not liking Valparaiso's hills, claimed the apartment's odor emanated from adobe mud, and demanded we apologize for crying and cursing her city and her house. She wrote, "I hated your attitude: I have everything in my power like USA people I don't care about your complaints. You are a tourist, not a traveler. I'm happy that people like you hate my city."
I tried to obtain a refund through TripAdvisor. TripAdvisor's website offers no email address or 800 phone number to contact. It took me hours of searching to find my way to its cancellation/refund policies. Finally I was able to download its 4-page Payment Protection Policy Claim Form, which requires much information not relevant to my refund claim, and must be "completed [with] associated documentation within 14 days of the start of your scheduled stay." (That would not have been possible, as I got home more than 14 days after 9/1.) I did email all of the facts set forth above to TripAdvisor's "payment protection team." Every time I contacted TripAdvisor, I asked that they instruct Camila to refund my $155.20; Camila had written me that she would do so, if TripAdvisor told her to. TripAdvisor did essentially nothing to compel this listing landlady to comply with its policies.

So, since the listing does not mention heat or hot water or non-leaking roof or absence of rats I assume that would not be covered either. Love TripAdvisor listing and will continue to rate and use their listing BUT, will NEVER book through them again.)

I am totally unhappy with Tripadvisor and their merchants. I would never book with them and never advise anyone to book with them either. I booked a trip and an emergency aroused which was life or death for myself and my unborn child and instead of reimbursing me my money I was still charged. After speaking with them and the merchant numerous times I did not get anywhere and therefore to keep me and my baby safe I did not go on the trip but was in loss of over $700. I would never ever recommend them and something should be done to close them as a business as I seen this has been done numerous times to many other people.

Property owners beware of Tripadvisor's holiday rentals agency. I had listed my property to the site and hosted a guest. I expected to get paid from holiday lettings. They claimed they paid and sent me a transaction receipt. I sent them back my account screenshot showing NO credit from their agency. My bank couldn't do anything since it concerned the bank of Americas. They kept on sending the same automated messages that the money was released from their side, and they can't do anything further. And after I called them about 10 times and spend about 200e in overseas calls, again they refused to check or help out with this. They are totally unprofessional and amateur, that is why their agency is not doing well anyways. I lost about 700e with this incident. They are outrageous. If anyone can help please do!

I need to rent a house in New England at Thanksgiving time. I found a house that would accommodate us. It had four bedrooms, was near our relatives and a plus it was close to the beach. I requested to rent it. The owner responded and said I could rent it but they wanted us to know there was no heat. Did we want to rent it anyways? I responded no, of course, we would need heat. I requested my deposit back and was refused a refund.
The woman I talked to Navia ** did not officially cancel the reservation. The reservation won't let me independently cancel it. This is ridiculous. If you do not have heat in a house in New England, why is it being rented out during the fall/winter. This is a scam. If it is snowing, it will be too cold for us to stay at the location. It was a 24-hour period from the time I made the request to finding out there was no heat in the building. We have a baby. We can't stay in a house that is without heat. NEVER USE FLIPKEY, INC. by TripAdvisor. NEVER EVER USE IT. THEY STOLE MY MONEY.

On July 18, 2016 I booked a hotel through TripAdvisor to stay at the Rodeway Inn in Chincoteague, VA. I was thrilled to get a room short notice (4 days in advance) during a popular weekend so, even though I'd never used TripAdvisor to book accommodations before and they wanted me to pay in full ($663.00), I went ahead with it. Shortly after my payment I received a payment confirmation email from a company called CancelOn (www.cancelon.com) with a receipt number AND an order id number. Then I got an email from TripAdvisor saying: Your reservation is confirmed. Your hotel reservation at Rodeway Inn is confirmed. Everything looked official, so I figured I was all set and the room was secured. I started packing.
Then, a day later an email comes in from CancelOn with the header "Your Input Needed"... which I figured was some sort of a satisfaction survey because of the way it was worded so I didn't open it right away because I was so busy tying up loose ends for the trip. When I opened the email it said the hotel I thought I'd secured a room at was "FULLY BOOKED on the required dates" and "We tried to find other rooms in the hotel, but unfortunately there are no rooms available. We are very sorry for the inconvenience."
Seriously?!! I was supposed to leave in the morning to drive to Virginia, so I called CancelOn. I was told by a man named "William" they couldn't do anything about it but they would try to find me another room on the island. This was clearly a very long distance call to another country, based on the connection and the accent, so I had my doubts they would find me a room on a tiny island in Virginia on short notice. I said, "No thank you, I'll take my money back and somehow find something when I arrive." Guess what? They told me it would be 2-3 DAYS before I'd see my $663!!! That's pretty much all I had, how was I supposed to get a room now?! They had no solution for me, citing the bank handles it and it is out of their hands.
My only hope was to let them try to get me a room. I asked when they would get back to me and they would not give me any idea. The man just kept saying, "give me time" and wouldn't specify how much. Meanwhile, I needed to get up early to start driving in the morning. So I called TripAdvisor and relayed the whole story. They feigned regret and seemed like they were going to be helpful by calling CancelOn with me on the line. I thought they would handle it but NO — they basically got a manager (a man named "Steve") and turned it over to ME! Steve already knew my story and offered no additional info except that the refund would be more like 3-10 days, which was even worse! Then he SCOLDED ME for not opening their "Your Input Needed" email more promptly!
At no time did the woman at TripAdvisor break in to try and resolve anything or even defend me, her customer. They never did find me a room of course, and I couldn't wait because I had to start driving to my destination. I had to borrow money to cover costs until my refund came from them. I am horrified at the deceitful, unorganized, un-businesslike manner with which this whole transaction was handled.

I just experienced the TripAdvisor booking system as an holiday rental owner for the first time. A guest tried to book my holiday property and I replied to them via the TripAdvisor messaging system several times. The guest clearly did not get any of my messages as they then sent a second booking request asking me to contact them!! As TripAdvisor don't provide the guests details (until after they're paid for the ENTIRE booking, not just the deposit!), I kept sending messages via their system, some with my contact details so the guest could reach me directly. These were blocked by TripAdvisor (contact details not permitted).
Meanwhile, I got emailed SEVERAL TIMES and even called (an international call!) by TripAdvisor urging me to accept the booking. But I couldn't just accept it without getting some info from the guest first. It was crucial I got the guest to confirm the nature of their booking before I could accept it, as the dates they requested were during the infamous "schoolies" week (where high school leavers often rent properties and host parties); I have a strict "no student groups" rule and had no idea if the booking was for students or not. Since I was unable to confirm this I had no choice but to decline the booking.
TripAdvisor are aggressive and pushy, and want to maximize the (exorbitant!) fees they charge guests by getting holiday property owners to accept all and any booking they receive, and clearly discourage any communication between the two. Airbnb isn't perfect but it is genius compared to TripAdvisor. I would recommend to any property owner to avoid listing your property on TripAdvisor.

I have long suspected Tripadvisor artificially inflates reviews and ratings. When I left a comprehensive review about a resort in Cabo that was itemized to include things that were Good, Just OK, and Bad, I never saw my review pop-up. I re-submitted it, only to have the same thing happen again. It was nowhere to be found. I emailed for an explanation and was told that some of my statements violated their content policy (which is both vague and restrictive, especially against anything that might be deemed "negative"). Now, it was not like I used expletives or had my negative comments drenched in hyperbole, I simply stated what was bad about my family's experience at this resort. So, it would seem the Tripadvisor manufactures better ratings and reviews for businesses on their site by having a restrictive content policy and removing any reviews deemed, perhaps, too honest?

Well this past July, I basically got scammed by one of your sellers. I was looking for a condo at Myrtle Beach to sleep 16 guests. I came across a advertisement that said beachfront condos that sleep 8 guests. So I contacted the property owner and reserved 2 condos. Of course payment was due before arrival, so I paid maybe a week upon arrival. A few days before arrival, I was informed by the property owner that the 2 condos weren't at the same resort. I said it was no problem as long as both rooms slept 8 guests each and I was assured they did.
When we arrived at the 1st resort, I go in to inspect. I go into the bathroom 1st and notice it's water all over the floor, I walk over to the toilet and I see the toilet is overflowing. I call the property owner, he doesn't answer and his vm is full. So I tell the front desk and they tell me they can't help bc the property is privately owned. I continue to inspect while emailing and texting the owner. Next I notice there's only 2 beds and a pullout couch (only sleeping room for 6 not 8) so I go to the next resort. This condo only had 2 beds (only sleeping room for 4) and no kitchenette. At this point I'm pissed and I call again. Still no answer, so of course I text/email.
Much later the property manager calls and says both rooms sleep 8 guests and to turn the water off to the toilet and maintenance will be there shortly. I expressed to him how many beds were in the rooms and how there were 6 people that had nowhere to sleep. The property owner stated he would find us another condo. I said ok. The maintenance person never showed and I kept trying to call the property owner. Finally he calls back late afternoon and says he's found a room that sleeps 8 guests but wants to be paid $200 more, I ask him why would he ask for more money if we paid for an 8 guests condo but got a 6 guest and a 4 guest condo? He doesn't reply to my question, he just says "sorry for the inconvenience" and "maintenance should be there shortly".
I told the seller we were checking out and wanted the $ back for the condo where there was a toilet issue and I then called PayPal to start the refund process. Long story short, the seller wanted us to stay but the toilet never was fixed and we had to use the resort main restroom which was located on the 1st floor and we were on the 7th.
After 2 days of going back and forth in text, emails and calls I had experienced enough. So I let him know how much of a inconvenience having guest sleep on the floor and to go down 7 floors go use the restroom really was. This time the owner responded right back. He said he would get maintenance to come again but I would have to pay $75 (I was surprised bc to my knowledge maintenance never came, the resort cleaned the restroom bc I told them the water would eventually damage the room under us, but I didn't say anything). I told him I wasn't going to pay for an issue that was brought to his attention at check in, then he tries to tell me how to go about fixing the toilet. He then calls and tells me he will be there in 30 to 45 minutes, but doesn't get there until 3 hours later.
When he arrives I'm not there but the other guests are, they watch him fix the toilet and when I arrive he's standing outside the room wanting to be paid. We go back and forth bc I had told him before that I wasn't paying for someone else's mess. I go back into the condo and one of the guests ask what we're arguing about and I tell her he wants $75, she takes $20 and says "give him this so he can leave" and I did and he soon left. To me this was very inconsiderate and unprofessional. A few days later I called PayPal back and I was notified that the rep didn't note everything. The only notes that were made were about the toilet issue, so I asked for the complaints to be joined together. I was told I would have to restart the process so I said ok. This time I was told the issue of false advertisement was being entered. So I send copies of text/emails to verify my story and a few days later I get an email stating I couldn't be given a refund.
At this point I'm furious bc I find out that the false advertisement and the toilet issue was never put together, they were done as 2 separate complaints, so I had to do an appeal. Then I was told to reach out to my bank, Flipkey and TripAdvisor. I feel like I have been given the runaround bc each company has told me to call another company. I have always had such great thoughts about Flipkey/TripAdvisor, but right now I'm not so sure. Whether or not I contacted TripAdvisor/Flipkey within 24 hours of check in or not, something should have been done, other than calling the seller and asking does he want to give a refund. I really feel as if a refund should have been granted due to the texts\emails\pictures that I provided. This was clearly a scam of false advertisement and it was a huge inconvenience for my family and I.
I have received emails from Kunal ** and Rupika **. I have also spoken to several of your reps Omkar, and Rohan to name a few. I was told that there was no such thing as a corporate phone number or email address, I was told the owner was called several times. Then when they reached him they asked did he wanted to give a refund. Meanwhile, I was called once and I was unable to answer and was never called again. Why is this? Why can't this be handled better? Meaning, call the seller, state that there is evidence that proves he has scammed/false advertised someone, then ask how much he is willing to refund in order to remain in good standing with your company and I.
I have been in the customer service field for over 11 years and whether polices or procedures were followed by the customer or not, when this type of situation would have been brought to anyone's attention the customer wouldn't have been turned away furious and exhausted as I have. This entire situation has been a very unprofessional, unmoral, long drawn out process and I'm hoping someone of higher authority can reach out to me and do something other than tell me they understand but it's the seller's choice if I get some money back.

I booked and paid for accommodation in Vietnam (Ho Chi Minh) city a 2 bedroom apt through TripAdvisor. Upon arrival on the 24/8 after walking the streets with our luggage for 4 hours, trying to find someone who could help us make contact with the apt owner Johny ** booking number #: **. Who would not answer his phone or TripAdvisor inbox msgs so we could get the keys we finally stumbled upon his letting agent in a real estate office. She told us in the very little English she spoke that Johny ** was her client so she proceeded to try to make contact with him. After several phone calls (I am not sure to whom, as she spoke in VIETNAMESE) and another 2 hrs later she took us to what we believe was Johny **'s home address where we stood and knocked on the door for over 20 mins. No one came to the door.
It was at this point we realised that we were probably not going to be able to contact him to get the keys so she arranged for us to stay at a hotel close by. She gave us her business card and we exchanged ph numbers and she said she would continue trying to contact him. At this stage I thought "Well she's his letting agent so I'm sure she'll sort it out and have my money refunded within a day or 2." We did not hear from her again. We ended up just finding other accommodation after spending 2 days at the hotel she had found us waiting to hear from either her or Johny **. AS THIS WAS MY 1ST TIME booking through TripAdvisor or any holiday for that matter, I was not aware of the hidden 24HR clause in their fine print stating that should there be a problem you must notify them within 24hrs upon arrival or they hand your money over and that's the end of their responsibilities on booking made with them.
I explained that I was unaware of the 24 hr clause and that I was under the impression that because we had found his leasing agent that it would probably be sorted out in the next day or two and furthermore that I only had the address and ph num of the owner on me, that my ref and booking number was on my laptop that I had left in Australia so could not get access to to make a report anyway. I have sent numerous emails to the owner. Inboxed his account and continue to keep trying to ring him with no luck. I have also had and sent numerous emails to TripAdvisor informing them and all I get back from them is... "You'll have to contact the owner." They even sent him an email acknowledging my complaint to which they claim they have had no response.
Then tonight they send me an email offering the very same APT in question owned by Johny ** AS A POSSIBILITY for accommodation on my NEXT HOLIDAY... 8 days ago I wrote a review on TripAdvisor's page trying to warn others to steer clear of this listing explaining my situation which they refuse to this point to release... I think it's DISGUSTING that this person has not been removed and banned from ALL booking sites let alone have them RECOMMENDING this person to future travellers. My holiday was ruined and no one seems to care. I took some small consolation thinking "Oh well at least my payment's protected." How wrong was I. TripAdvisor have done nothing but fob me off.

Having been trying to receive a £50 damage deposit. Guests had a BBQ on the decking of my holiday cabin. This in itself is total madness. Why would you have a BBQ on wooden decking of a wooden cabin? Then they left the hot BBQ unattended!!! It then blew over and burnt 2 panels of the decking. I suppose I should count my blessings that they didn't burn down the whole property!!! The guests did not tell me about the damage until after they left. They seemed to have panicked and got the damage repaired in the cheapest way possible. The decking used is not to the same standard of the existing decking. It is not the same pattern and it is not the same colour, far from it. The decking has not been treated with the correct weatherproofing treatment. So all of this needs to be rectified.
I cannot claim on my insurance, as it will not cover the stupidity of having a fire/BBQ in such close proximity of a wooden structure, in this case on the wooden structure. I followed Holiday Lettings (TripAdvisor) procedures and sent them photos, a copy of a quote for the works, copies of emails between myself and the guests who admitted causing the damage and a copy of the invoice for the work being carried out. But they keep sending back an email saying the same thing asking for the same stuff over again and saying the invoice is not acceptable but not why.
Holiday Lettings (TripAdvisor) are happy to take their fees, but not to help you when you have a problem. They have no complaints procedure. Most of the emails are standard automated replies. They do not answer questions. I have been trying to find what exactly what they want from me, but I just get "we can't take into account the invoices you sent." The English in the emails is dreadful.

It's under help and pick an option then you can say, "need more help" and then it gives you the option to call 1-877-354-7539. I too had trouble with TripAdvisor. My first booking requested twice on a rental that was not available. I must have accidentally sent a quote and she paid it. I told her that it was not available and to cancel on her end. This was also her first time using TripAdvisor. They charged her a booking fee and would not refund it.
I called on her behalf and was able to get them to return the fee but they were going to take $150 from my next rental. I explained to someone a second time since the first had trouble with English and got a lesson on calendars and a courtesy of no charge for my mess up. I was very frustrated but understood. People could just get a contact and then make the reservation without TripAdvisor. Then they would be out their booking fee on both sites. TripAdvisor has increased the booking fee for the renter and I do think it is too much.
Quality and Condition - I guess it's just like craigslist for the most part. I advertise a resort that is managed by Wyndham so renters can see it is a legitimate place but there are always scammers out there. I dont think they can scam too much low because the owner does not receive the money until the day after the renter checks in. That way they cant disappear with the money and leave the renter without a place to stay. The renter can refuse the accommodations and that is where Trip-key's insurance would kick in to find other accommodations. It is not all bad - you just need to learn the system to work within it. I am mostly happy and making money renting through TripAdvisor.

And no proof of their payment to the owners before receiving a penny from me??? I don't think so!
I am taking legal advice against you and your Silka holidays. I am informing the tourist board of your behaviour and will have your name widely circulated, adding the the already enormous complaints on the internet about you starting with my friends, facebook, tourist office and international lawyers, who we will be contacting on Tuesday by my colleague, who is an international business woman and has many contacts. Don't think for one minute you will get money out of her. I made the booking and I am a poor widow in bad health, a brain disease this could even kill me, the persecution and stress is such. My friend is now handling this corrupt and sordid affair. Her name is Tina **, senior manager with an international organization who will be using her lawyers to deal with you. After booking two months in advance, and corresponding with owner, I find out that there are only two bedrooms and some air mattresses. I gave the emails, the ad and a copy of an ad for the same rental (but listed correctly as 2 bedroom) on Vacation Rentals By Owner to the TripAdvisor customer service. I wanted my money back. Didn't happen.
Then the night before we are leaving to go to Charlotte, the owner emails me and says he has to cancel because the "community" in which the rental is located no longer allows short-term rentals. I called TripAdvisor and they said I would have to confirm that the owner can give a refund and after that, they would try to find us a new rental. This is 10 hours before we are getting on a plane for a week-long vacation!!
After a long talk with my husband, the owner agreed to let us use the rental, but his parents needed to meet us first at a local restaurant, walk in with us and subsequently sat on the patio everyday to give the impression we were visiting them and not renting. What a weird experience. However, the ad is still up. They are not taking the ad down even though it is false advertisement and they have the original email from the owner stating he cannot rent the unit. I would never use TripAdvisor, FlipKey, etc. (all the same network) again.
