TripAdvisor does not have my permission to use my business name. Not only that they have created a business with my name on it with somebody else's food I'm getting bad reviews because people are coming to my business expecting stuff that doesn't go on. But we don't cook and we're getting bad reviews because people are expecting stuff that we don't have. They also expected us to be open hours that we're not open. That it says we are not helpful and I don't think they should have any right to use my business on any website and allow anybody to make reviews especially when they're wrong.

We have traveled overseas and booked through tripadvisor for a condo where we stayed for three weeks. The owner released our deposit of $100US on 27th February and we are still waiting. After a few e-mails to tripadvisor, and were told that they will look into it. Looks like they are still looking, as still no deposit, and no reply. Never am I or anybody that I know are going to use tripadvisor again. Just deal directly with owners.

I have been a member of TripAdvisor for 5 years and have submitted over 60 reviews. After a recent holiday I reviewed a particularly unpleasant restaurant. My review was 100% genuine, and was actually published and visible on the site for over 2 months. Mine was not the first negative review but suddenly, several over the top glowing positive reviews mysteriously appeared, all from reviewers with suspiciously 1 rating to their name. Suddenly, my review disappeared, yet more quite obviously fake reviews got published. I questioned TripAdvisor, who would not give me any answers, and I even flagged the fake reviews but they remained! TripAdvisor reviews unbiased? I think not!

Wrote a comment that a favorite restaurant of mine does not show up when doing a general search on the city Colorado Springs, and it use to and that the cuisine selection of African/Ethiopian no longer shows up. Instead of responding to the issue at hand they responded with a snippy note that it can be found under Dessert - this is by no means a dessert place. Also mentioned that when searching on Cajon, Indian restaurants show. I mentioned there is something wrong with their search engine because when I search on the restaurant by name it shows as #2. I responded to their response that they didn't respond to the question at hand - why didn't this restaurant show up in a general search? Then I got a very nasty response back.

Well, I will discontinue use of this site! Obviously, from reading the complaints from business owners, they have to pay to be part of the search engine even if they are reviewed and added by those who use the site. TripAdvisor has gone the way of Angie's List and HomeAdvisor, etc. They are no longer the objective search engine that they once were. I'm going to stick to a general search on Google because now the question in my mind is - do they select only certain restaurants to show in their general search, and how do I know that they don't monitor and delete the negative reviews of some favored businesses that pay to be on there?

On a recent trip to Chiang Mai in Thailand, stayed at a villa. Gave it a 3 star rating but was not happy with several things since that review has been published. The owner has done nothing but slanderous comments, rude e-mails with lots of swear words at myself and member of my family. I have reported this to TripAdvisor as the guidelines of being broken as my surname was published and don't seem to care. Thinking of taking legal action.

Before we shut our business down, we were harassed by a couple who came into our facility rude, angry, and were unable to be appeased by our services. Our best therapists worked on these clients. They threatened to complain about us if they didn't get their money back (after services were rendered) and they did - on over 4 social media sites, one of which was TripAdvisor. There was absolutely no recourse to these people going on a smear campaign against our company, and it was so severely traumatizing, damaging to our foot traffic, and to the therapists that were negatively reviewed. It wasn't long after (with a few other negative, subsequent events) we lost our passion for the industry we're in and closed doors.

Free speech is a right, but it's used as a weapon on the internet and online forums. If we ever open a business in the future, we will proceed with much caution on listing on any site. These sites exploit businesses, and thrive on attention, negative or positive, no matter. Now, we're having to fight with TripAdvisor to take our business listing down, as they refuse to update it as a closed business. The best reply we've had on the business forum is the equivalent of saying "who cares!" I guess it will be another 5 bad reviews on their site against our closed company for poor customer service because the phones are disconnected - all our fault, of course! LESSON LEARNED! Shame on TripAdvisor.

On January 22, 2015 I posted a review on TripAdvisor for Swinomish Casino and Lodge at 12885 Casino Drive Anacortes WA 98221, 1 888 288 883. ** Swinomish general manager responded indicating that my review was correct. On 4th March 2015 I received a threatening phone (** Washington State) call from ** , not objecting to my review but that I had posted it. A few days later I received a letter banning me from Swinomish. I also received a second call which I did not answer on 5th March from ** Washington State.

I went on TripAdvisor’s Forum web site and asked what I should do. I received many suggestions and I replied to several. I took their advice and contacted TripAdvisor as it is against their policy for a business to threaten or bully a reviewer. TripAdvisor as far as I could tell took no action against Swinomish Casino BUT around April 15th 2015 I found that my account with TripAdvisor had been disabled. I sent several emails to TripAdvisor for an explanation and received no answer. I contacted The Attorney General for Washington State. A few days later I received a email from TripAdvisor indicating that I had been suspended, for too many post on their TripAdvisor Forum Site and I was in some way going after Swinomish Casino? My review is only one of 279 reviews! And ** general manager agreed with it.

Swinomish has an extra ordinary high number of 5 star reviews, far too many for any business, no business is that perfect. Disabling reviewers that post reviews they do not want posted does decrease the number of reviews that are less than 5 star. Swinomish with the help of TripAdvisor is disabling reviewers that post reviews that businesses do not like. TripAdvisor should follow their own guidelines, which forbid businesses from threatening and bullying reviews. They should apply sanctions on Swinomish Casino for their actions and reinstated my account.

Trip Advisor publishes reviews of our business that have affected and still affect our income. Sometimes people do not show up at our family resort because of the Trip Advisor's reviews. When we bought this place 15 years ago it was a junk place, drunks, drug addicts, drug dealers, prostitution etc. We put over $200,000.00 in renovations and together with the assistance of the Manatee Sheriff's Office we cleaned the place up. Today it is a very quiet and secure place to stay in. I have NEVER seen 1 review of when the place was a junk place. The junkies write reviews that they send to Trip Advisor in order to affect our business and Trip Advisor publishes them.

We have answered the posted comments and NEVER have they answered to us nor have they published our answers and comments. We are a self-catering resort as many other resorts we have stayed in. This is informed to every guest and they are very happy to know that nobody will be entering the unit while they are in the unit. But Trip Advisor published comments such as: ... they wanted us to clean the units and do the work for them........!!! Very silly!

They show two different sets of reservation dates for us on their site. One set of dates has expired which led to the owner being upset. She apparently never got the dates we actually submitted, though it shows on their site tied to us with dates they generate within their system.

The owner in Italy and I have spent hours on the telephone trying to resolve this. (Telephone costs are high for this) Their customer service representatives fail to return calls, and if I call and get a different representative the representative refuses to allow me to talk with the one who has already worked the problem for hours, nor will the representative transfer me to a supervisor. "Beware of Trip Advisor's cancellation policy." I rented a vacation property directly from an owner in March of 2015 for a 3 week stay in February, 2016 in North Naples, Florida and paid a deposit of approximately $700.00 through Trip Advisor to the owner. I had stayed in this property in February of 2015. In April of 2015, one month after booking and 10 months before the 2016 stay, my plans changed and I had to cancel the 2016 stay. I expected to have to pay a cancellation fee.

What I did not expect is that by canceling both the owner's rules and Trip Advisor's rules state that I forfeit my entire $700.00 deposit. In my view this is not right. Most real estate rental companies charge a nominal $50.00 cancellation charge if you cancel more than 90 days from vacation stay, the logic being that there is plenty of time to re-rent the property. I will never rent from Vacation Rentals by Owner and Trip Advisor again. When I tried to write this review on Trip Advisor, I was told that I cannot right about my experience pertaining to a future booking.

There are numerous fake reviews of several businesses on TripAdvisor, for hotels in my area. There is even a beachfront photo of a hotel in San Jose, although anyone with a map can tell that San Jose is nowhere near the beach.

Complaints to TripAdvisor are met with this response: "Please forward this email to userreviewsupport@tripadvisor.com and provide any of the following information you have:" When you send an email to that address, you get this response: "We're sorry. You replied to a TripAdvisor address that does not accept incoming e-mail." There is so much false information on TripAdvisor, that I seriously doubt that anyone working for TA even cares. I know that TA doesn't post that false information, but they are certainly not validating it.

This woman, ** is renting her 2 bedroom house in Discovery Bay, JAMAICA. It was listed in March as $700.00 week. We gave her a deposit through TA for $419.00, in March 2015. We then asked for her phone number so we could call and get directions. She gave a us number that did not work! She gave us the email of someone named ** - Names are not even close. No response to emails.

I emailed TRIPADVISOR, and they did respond that they would check into this. I also noticed, that the price on her house listing -BLISSFUL BAY VIEW #BR14837622, now has a new price! She now rents for $135.00/night, but I have the RECEIPT FOR THE $700.00/WEEK charge. This morning, I woke to: "your reservation has been canceled, by the owner." REALLY?

So she is angry that we found out she IS A SCAMMER, she changed the price, and refuses to give contact information so we can call and get DIRECTIONS? SHE GOT HER DEPOSIT. THERE is no accountability from ANY of these booking sites. TRIPADVISOR was good about giving us the REFUND. HOWEVER, we have no place to stay, and at this rate, we may end up in a tent.

The "owners" either do not respond at all, or, they have all kinds of unethical "situations" they expect us to conform to. One guy in the UK, told us, we "have to pay the yard guy $80.00/US in cash when we arrive and also "pay him any taxes due." OUR RENT, should pay his help. It should not be an extra cost to us. We tip people that go out of their way. That is the way it should be.

I HOPE, TripAdvisor, removes this ** person for not following TA protocol as far as contact with people who already left a deposit! Meanwhile, do NOT RENT FROM this person in Discovery Bay, JAMAICA. We have been to this area and we know it well. I have NEVER seen this big blue house with the above ground swimming pool. I think she is a scammer. I told her we have been going to JAMAICA for 29 years as my husband has family, way up in the mountains. (too far from the sea for me) She knows we are not ignorant, and she also knows, we reported her unethical behavior to Trip Advisor.

Now, we have to start this process all over again! There is nobody that is going to try and make it right after going through all of that. BEWARE OF SCAMMERS ON ALL VACATION RENTAL SITES. VRBO, FLIPKEY, HOMEAWAY, TRIPADVISOR, VACATION HOMES... they all harbor thieves.

I attempted to use TripAdvisor to submit a glowing review of a company that offers guided tours of Nicaragua. Because our first tour with the company was so fantastic, we used their guides for several tours. TripAdvisor had an account available to receive reviews of this company already, but would not allow me to review each tour individually (I could only submit 1 review for the account). In order to provide information for each tour we went on to the users of the website, I mentioned our experience with each guide that we used.

TripAdvisor sent me an email several days later citing that they would not post my review because "they only allow reviews of hotels" (an obvious lie because there were already reviews of the tour company published) and because I put information about the multiple tours I did with the tour company (I used multiple tours because the company was fantastic).

The country I was visiting is one which relies on tourism as a vital component of its economy. Given the known shady business practices that TripAdvisor uses, I believe that my review was deliberately censored in order to bring down the overall rating of the tour company. There simply is no other explanation as to why dozens of reviews submitted in the exact format I used were approved and mine was denied. I attempted to respond with objection to this censorship but TripAdvisor designs their website to inhibit customer communication. Even the email I received could not be responded to.

TripAdvisor censors and alters the wording of your reviews. The ratings you see when using the website are not from the users, but from TripAdvisor (probably based on how much they are paid by the businesses). I will NEVER use this website or service again. TripAdvisor is shameful and is doing an incredible disservice to its customers as well as the local businesses. All in all they are just another disgusting for profit organization.

I thought perhaps I had clicked the wrong star rating, and in one case thought maybe I had cut a sentence that didn't appear in the final review. But after two out of two reviews did not appear correctly, I stopped doing reviews.

Now three years later, we own a restaurant and have very good reviews. We are in the top 20 restaurants in our area. Then all of a sudden we get a few generic bad reviews. They don't mention specific food, decor, dates, nothing. Then I get a call from the TripAdvisor salesperson who says they can help clear up the bad reviews but they can only help us if we become paid advertisers. And then he says if we don't become a paid advertiser, we are more likely to get more bad reviews. When I ask why, he just says, advertisers just statistically get very few bad reviews where people that don't pay tend to get a lot more.

I have an opportunity to respond to guest's comments on the TripAdvisor site. I attempted to respond to a comment but was refused access for 2 weeks. TripAdvisor stated that I was not eligible to respond as I was not a manager or owner. I am in fact the owner of the hotel and I had a TripAdvisor log-in and password, neither of which was recognized. I question the ability of an online rating site to determine who is permitted to access their site.

I have a small dive business with my husband in Pattaya, Thailand. We won the certificate of excellence in 2014. We have very good ratings and my husband prides himself in customer care. We were contacted by a customer from India. He wanted huge discounts, a private changing room on the boat, be able to pay in a foreign currency, refused to pay a deposit and wanted VIP treatment. On the day of his arrival, he sent a WhatsApp message to me requesting my husband to go and see him and pick up the deposit. After about 2 hours of nonsensical messages and him getting angry as he realized my husband would not be the one taking care of him. His requests were too much, so I told him to find another company to comply with his needs.

We never heard from him again until he posted a bad review on TripAdvisor, saying we're UK cheaters, and it was fraud what we're doing. He made personal references to myself and my work in his review. I asked TripAdvisor to remove the review but they refused, saying it met their guidelines! This review is detrimental to our business, and he never even met anyone in the team!

I tried to write a review for TripAdvisor on Hostal Casa Escallon, but this said they could not find the Hostal in Cartagena. I stayed at this Hostal for 5 days. The website kept reverting to another Hostal, Casa Hostal Escallon, similar name but not the same one. I could not write a review. So I am putting it on here.

This Hostal needs to have complaints filed. One of the young men who works at the front desk spends his time talking, laughing, turning the TV on very loud and it disturbs everyone. He is suppose to be working at the desk, but he locks the door and spends his time eating, watching TV, telling jokes in Spanish. People are trying to sleep, but his loud voice makes it impossible. This has been going on since 7:00 PM on Feb 25, 2015. He is very annoyed when he has to answer the locked door and let people in.

It is 10:30 PM and he is still talking and sitting with guest who are drinking beer and partying. I do not recommend anyone staying at this Hostal. The kitchen is small and seldom is it cleaned by the staff. No silverware, no sponge to wash dishes, food is spilled on the floor, few dishes, no glasses, cutting board, or equipment to eat at this Hostal. The TV, tables are located outside of the rooms, and there is no place to sit to prevent listening to the noise. This is my fifth day at this Hostal and if we cancel, there is a booking fee of $20.00. If booked online.

I run a restaurant in China and have had recently a really bad review on TripAdvisor. I have read this customer's review with sadness, followed by increasing disbelief. I have tried to puzzle his remarks together to get to a coherent story but I have found the facts that he stated in his review so far beside anything I could imagine that I took to the footage of our CCTV system since I was not present at the time.

He entered our restaurant on February 5th around 15:00 and were seated at table 2004, in perfect view of one of our CCTV cameras. The footage, in combination with statements made by our staff, shows an entirely different picture from what he states in his review; the reviewer claimed that he was abused and insulted by our staff, that no manager attended to him, that he could not get what he ordered.. Of course when the items he asked for are not on the menu!!! etc...

In reality the footage shows his wife walking into the kitchen area twice. This complies with remarks made by our staff, who state that his wife demanded at high voice to be catered to as she pleases since she is customer and hence "should be treated as a queen." The chef, which he depict as miserable faced, throwing filthy looks out of the kitchen and using insulting words, is in fact a local girl of the Dai minority. As many people who have experience with the Dai will understand, it's next to impossible to get a Dai person to be openly disrespectful unless they have been seriously mistreated. The chef and a helper actually resigned after the interaction they had with his wife because they were shocked by the treatment they received. The footage shows as well that the manager was at his table within minutes after his arrival.

I could go on and on regarding this story over a sandwich not consumed and not paid by the customer who rates my establishment as.. I quote "Dreadful. Unbelievable. Disgusting." (for the record we have obtained three consecutive years the TripAdvisor certificate of excellence). I of course reported this abuse to TripAdvisor offering to supply them with a copy of the CCTV footage as well as a copy of my sandwich section menu showing clearly that what he wanted is not on it; they answered that every was ok with the review without even asking for the evidence that I offered to provide them. This is clearly a joke, it shows they don't give a damn about restaurants owners.

This hotel was seriously negligent in many areas and safety issues and they removed those reviews. They took our review also negative and applied it to a sister hotel in the area and not the one we wrote the review for. It was less damaging that way. For us that discredits all the reviews and ratings we are finding on TripAdvisor and makes them pretty useless.

After all we have several neighbours within a block of our B&B, under the same license as us, on Tripadvisor and they're at the top of their category. I know our place is equal to theirs at least, and who knows, maybe better in some cases but you don't know if you don't allow equal rights to feedback. Tripadvisor has denied us that right to equal feedback.

Herein lies the INCONSISTENT. They have told us in an email, "Thank you for contacting TripAdvisor with information about this property. Unfortunately, this establishment does not meet the necessary criteria to appear as an Accommodation on our site. You can review our listings guidelines here: http://www.tripadvisor.com/GetListedNew ** Street Suite might, however, satisfy our guidelines to appear as a Vacation Rental. I understand nobody is forcing people to post reviews from which their business is coming from without paying anything to those who create business for this company, but why sell some junky trips in their site up to 20 times more when if you go those places directly you can get much cheaper? Why not to allow people directly edit or remove their reviews? What if someone did a mistake and can get sued by business for potentially millions of dollars?

Why not to post negative reviews? I went to a coffee shop in Moscow airport, and there were 4 workers at 1 am for supposedly 24/7 coffee, and they lied to me as if they were closed. I posted a review, and they sent me an email that could not post because their content guidelines does not allow putting down businesses? Wow, so they allow only good reviews? It means none of what is there about businesses is true, because if you can talk only good stuff and skip the bad, then cannot know what really is going on.

I found online that their company was sued in Europe for a slogan which says "reviews which you can trust", well that makes sense. The only thing to wonder is how not only they stay in business but are almost a one billion dollar company? I guess because most people are dumb that buy tickets from them. How much more someone can be so stupid?

What happened after my first review regarding Elm Grove Rv Park in Benton City, WA 99320 was the owner of the park paid me a visit face to face one morning when he came to town. I believe it may have been a Wednesday afternoon. He demanded that I remove it. Out of fear I tried, however, now thinking upon it, I had gone to him several times to talk to him about all of the stuff I was going through. He dismissed it as nothing and said I lied in my review. That's one thing I don't do, and that's lie. And in this country in our Constitution is our right of FREE SPEECH, so I Praise the Lord that Trip Advisor doesn't remove reviews! And my semi-recant was a lie-half-ditch effort to get him off my back!!! But this kind of thing is abusive also.

Since when does an owner of a property dictate to me what I can and cannot say? Well, I never had Lego's or Barbies or any normal toys of the year I lived in. But I did learn how to read the Bible at a very young age as well as doing math and learning the most important Amendments in the Constitution because then, even when I was very young, so I would know what my rights are and I was the first one to stick up for myself!!! TripAdvisor provides a platform for unauthorized people to advertise holiday homes without permission of the owners. This violates International copyright laws and promotes wrongful advertising and false rentals. In our case, when TripAdvisor was notified that an advertiser did not have permission to use the photos, advertise a home for rental or take bookings, they did nothing. The advertiser had no connection with the house and could potentially take money without ever providing the rental.

We were told by TripAdvisor to contact the advertiser ourselves. The only contact information we had was the email contact provided on TripAdvisor. The company would give is no additional information. Naturally the illegal advertiser did not respond. It is all too easy to set up a false email address to perpetuate this kind of fraud. In our case the false advertiser had also scraped photos from legitimate ads and used them on TripAdvisor, a violation of international copyright. When we notified TripAdvisor of this, they refused to take down the ad. As a publisher and advertising company, TripAdvisor is responsible for its content and held accountable by Truth in Advertising laws and International Copyright laws for both incorrect or untruthful advertising and the illegal use of copyright material.

False advertising and abusing consumer "Reviews" are industry wide and rapidly growing problems in the travel industry. As an industry leader, companies like TripAdvisor need to set a higher standard for consumer protection by being vigilant in creating and adhering to guidelines and policies, which ensure reliable content, verify legitimate advertisers and protect all participants - travelers and service providers.

While controversy rages on about fake reviews etc. on TA, something that may have been missed is that fact that although signing up with TA is voluntary, deleting your listing is not. Hidden deep in the depths of the Owner's Forum there is a single page dated 10th December 2014 which says: "We understand that some properties might want to remove their listing for a variety of reasons. However, we can only remove your listing if your property has closed permanently, due to our mission of being a comprehensive source of travel information."

Notice that this does not apparently appear anywhere in their Terms etc. (at least I couldn't find it), probably because if they did put it in there it would be deemed illegal... I have recently tried to delist my property, mainly because my entry on TA has not produced any business for me due to the demographics of my clients and indeed out of 150 paying guests last summer season only two departing guests left a review, and from my point of view a listing is a waste of time if it does not produce any business.

A representative from TA told me recently in an email that "TripAdvisor is a travel research website and it is our goal to have a comprehensive list of resources for travelers." This is of course a load of twaddle. What TA wants is to have as many people as possible visiting their web site and clicking on adverts so that they make money, so they continue to present themselves as a 'valuable travel resource' when in fact they are not, either for the prospective traveler who has to unravel which reviews are real and which are fake, or for the business owner who really does not get any business out of the site... Reminds me of the words of a song...

    "Mirrors on the ceiling,
    The pink champagne on ice
And she said "We are all just prisoners here, of our own device"
    And in the master's chambers,
    They gathered for the feast
They stab it with their steely knives,

But they just can't kill the beast

Last thing I remember, I was
    Running for the door
I had to find the passage back
To the place I was before
"Relax, " said the night man,
    "We are programmed to receive.
You can check-out any time you like,

But you can never leave! "

They must want money from the owner so they delete his good reviews. Tripadvisor.com was just plain wrong. Most good sites turn into scams in the end.

We did very hard work and get so many excellent reviews and after a year, tripadvisor deleting our reviews continuously every week, more than 3-5 reviews. This is not fair. Even so many companies having their multi day trip, even not following the guideline but they never take action against that and when I complaint about them, still after 4 week there is no action taken by trip advisor team. It's pathetic work and even from now I do not believe on trip advisor. Is there anyone who can help me out to save the reviews on tripadvisor?

We received a couple of ladies on a girlfriend getaway at our Inn and Spa. They stayed a couple of days and had many treatments in our spa. They ate and drank from our menus. Not once during their stay did they complain when asked if everything was OK. At check out time, one of the two ladies (she ordered only the most expensive food and drink from the menu), she complained and demanded a FULL refund. We offered her a discount to address her complaint. She refused and continued to demand a full refund. She then attempted to blackmail us by threatening to give us a bad review on TripAdvisor, which she did. This is called a revenge review. TripAdvisor refused to address our concerns and this review continues to be displayed for almost two years.

Incidentally, the other guest who shared a room with the complainer, was happy with her stay and paid her bill without complaint. She even offered to pay the complainer's bill but this was refused by the complainer. Our rate of complaint is 0.06 %. Nowhere on the review page or anywhere else on the TripAdvisor site do they make this information available to the traveler who is reading the reviews. We have told them to remove us from their website... They refused. We have signed up for the class action lawsuit against TripAdvisor. They claim they are not responsible for the content of the reviews, I challenge that and this will be decided by the courts. If TripAdvisor was fair and balanced, and even listened to your explanation of your side of the story, but no, that does not seem to be their policy. I also offered to drop our complaint if they removed our business and all references to us on their website. They did not even reply, and we continued to be displayed on their website.

TripAdvisor still posting the bad review even when I told them that the "guest" never saw my hotel, and then, I read a complain from this site from November that TripAdvisor would not post a bad review because the guest actually never physically stayed in the place she is reviewing about. So, which one is it??? I don't trust TripAdvisor and I don't want them talking about my business, because they are not professional and fair.

TripAdvisor are not helpful for small businesses. They should provide the real name of the person who put the review if the review is not fake and they should send me a list of the names of the people who put a bad review of my business. I called them and tried removing my page from TripAdvisor, but they told me it's against policy. It is my business and I have the right to decide where my business can be reviewed on the internet.

I resubmit the same identical review and sometimes it is then published. I just returned from Italy in October 2014 and wrote a "glowing" review of Hotel Caruso in Massa Lubrense Italy. I waited and waited for 2 weeks and nothing was published, inquired as to the reason and Maria the "nasty" trip advisor rep told me I wasn't adhering to the guidelines and they could not accept biased reviews. I am not a friend or related to anyone at the hotel. The bogus reasons for not submitting my review are ridiculous!!! I think they are biased in their selection.. and if you submit several reviews they won't publish them. This is hurting the establishments they “CLAIM" they want us to review. Maybe they take bribes from certain hotels themselves and the hotel I stayed at isn't paying them!!!

TripAdvisor removed a perfectly decent review I gave of a diving school in Thailand - a mix of good and bad, focusing on my bad experience with a diving instructor who was horrendously rude to me and others. Four people found the review helpful in the few days it was up. But the guy clearly didn't like it and had it removed along with then a load of sudden positive reviews of him popping up - coincidence? I think not! This made me even more angry about the situation - take it as constructive criticism, don't throw your toys out of the pram! TripAdvisor gave me a generic reason it was removed (TripAdvisor does not accept review of 'multi-day tour companies' apparently - despite the fact all the other reviews of the same place were allowed). They then refused to engage or explain further despite my complaints. As such I'm removing my account. Fuming.

I had been a Tripadvisor reviewer for a long time, before they supported Facebook login. Then, many years back, they introduced Facebook login and I made the mistake of trying it. I ended up with two different tripadvisor accounts. Recently, I found in their Help topic that they could merge these accounts. I submitted a request to do that. This would have been ok if the merge worked correctly.

Before the merge, I booked a vacation rental through the tripadvisor Payment Protection program and made the down payment. After tripadvisor merged my accounts, the rental booking disappeared. No record of it in either accounts. I submitted a ticket notifying tripadvisor of the problem. They basically said rentals are handled by the vacation rental team, be patient, they'll be in touch. Then, they close my ticket. Two weeks later, still no news. There is no phone number so there is no way to contact them for more information. That got me thinking, if I were in Spain having issues with my vacation rental, how would I get help from tripadvisor vacation rental? What is the payment protection worth if you can't reach anyone to handle your case and protect you? Besides, aren't tripadvisor and the vacation rental team working for the same corporate entity. Why should my ticket be closed before the issue is resolved?

I am very disappointed at how indifferent the Tripadvisor support team is even though I am a paying customer and a long time reviewer. I am now stuck in a state where I've made the down payment with no way to make a final payment and no record of the rental booking. Luckily, I made a screenshot of my booking confirmation in my old accounts. Otherwise, I would have no proof I even booked the unit. I guess I'll have to spend some time next week calling tripadvisor's Natick office and figure this out. But all in all, I won't recommend anyone booking through tripadvisor. Their customer service staff is non-existent. If you are lucky and don't run into problems, things may work out. The minute you run into problems, you would have trouble finding help. I won't trust their paid service anymore.

I call the management company and an extremely rude person doesn't even try to make an excuse, just tells me they will rent it to someone else. Called TripAdvisor and was told that there is nothing they can do, it is up to the owner/manager to decide, and I can't even leave a review for this person because I didn't actually stay there. This person keeps my money for over a month, leaves the listing active at a higher price, and then cancels prior reservation as soon as someone else shows up willing to pay more. Total scam supported by TripAdvisor. And I can't even warn other people about his behavior. If I was to cancel I would have to pay a fine, why not have the same policy for the other side? Later, I saw on my Google wallet, that the lady was attempting to enter a higher amount than was supposed to be charged to the TripAdvisor, that's why it was declined. Having had our apartment rental on Holiday Lettings and I had worked so hard to get 5* reviews for our property, then we had one bad letting. Due to the excessive mess our apartment was left in from these guests our Management Company contacted me to say they had never seen anything like it. Nappies left in kitchen cupboards, moldy food left in the fridge. All crockery left around, all food stuck on. Our apartment is 5* immaculate and on a 5* resort. I had received an email from them during their stay saying they were having a great time.

Our Management Company advised they had to use two sets of cleaners, it was in such a mess. I was so upset. I had come out of hospital having had two major spinal operations, within the space of two weeks and was due another in a few months. I found this really upsetting. I kept the deposit we hold and did not refund this to these guests (which is the first time we have had to do this) because the apartment had not been left as it was found. Around a few weeks later I received an email from them saying they had a great time, but realized they had not received their deposit back. I politely answered that we were keeping the deposit due to the mess the apartment had been left in, and mentioned what our Management Company had found. Of course, they denied this saying they would take it further etc., etc.

Then months later after my third lot of spinal surgery, I was wondering why we had not had rental calls about our apartment. I had a look on Holiday Lettings and found these guests had placed a review there with 1* rating, a very damning review. It falsely said that the drains were blocked, the apartment was neglected. I was a bad landlord (quoting my full name) and that they had contacted me and I had ignored requests to put things right?!

Again, I ended up crying and in a mess. I felt everyone on the internet could see my name and what had been said about me and the apartment, none of which were true. It was a get back for keeping the deposit. I had worked so hard with my guests to keep them happy and would email them to ask them to contact me should they have any problems, or I advised them to go to the Hotel Reception. I had nothing about blocked drains etc., it was false.

I sent email after email to Trip Advisor and Holiday Lettings, both the same company and a letter to say it was Defamation of Character and to remove this review immediately. I had said they printed this against our property and we had no one contacting us for renting it out which I had thought was odd, as we normally get quite a few.

I kept getting told by Trip Advisor that this was a matter of opinion and did not go against their rules. I sent email evidence that these guests were happy while they were there, it was not an opinion, and it was complete lies against me and the property, because I kept the deposit. There was no evidence they had asked me to fix blocked drains, replace light bulbs and that the apartment was neglected. Had this been true, they would not have emailed me during their stay and later to say they had a good time.

I have removed our property from Holiday Lettings/Trip Advisor because they would not remove this damning review, and it has cost us loss of rental business and we cannot keep the property without the rental which helped us to pay for it. They have ruined what I had worked so hard to achieve and I can't believe things like this can go on without us being able to do anything.

TripAdvisor publishes reviews which probably aren't correct and damaging our good name and business. Their answer is that the review of the client meets their guidelines; meanwhile, the host can prove by the listings description and the real situation and location, the rental client to be ill-intentioned. The rental client expected refund because they did prefer to go back to Bangkok, which is no reason for refund. As a revenge they wrote an utterly bad review based on multiple lies, which is in conflict with our description. Despite our complaints, TripAdvisor answer is:

"Traveler reviews are individual, highly subjective opinions which are not endorsed or verified by TripAdvisor. It is our policy to allow any review that meets our criteria to be posted to our site. We are very sorry to hear about the situation you experienced with your guest. However, we are not in a position to make judgments about the character or intentions of reviewers. If a review that you report violates our guidelines or we determine there is something improper about it, we will look to remove the review. However, simply disagreeing with the content of the review is not sufficient to justify removing it. Please remember that TripAdvisor does not arbitrate or referee factual disputes. We have completed a review inquiry into your complaint. It is TripAdvisor's final decision that the review you inquired about will remain on the site. As I hope you understand, the details of our review inquiry procedures cannot be disclosed."

Finally we took the property off-line, as we can afford to have less income. In our opinion TripAdvisor doesn't care about welfare of Hosts!

I signed up with Trip Advisor about 2 years ago. In the time since I became a Senior Contributor and frequently relied on their reviews as well as submitting my own. That's the good news - and the reason they're not getting just one star from me. The bad news is they lost one of my latest reviews. Not a traumatic event, but the way they handled it was bad enough for me to feel compelled to report here.

Aug 27 - lengthy (glowing) review submitted for new (to Trip Advisor) restaurant. I also received their automated response acknowledging receipt of my submission that day. Sept 2 - I emailed and asked what happened with my review as I was still waiting to add my pix. Sept 21 - I emailed and asked to be removed from email list as waiting 3 weeks for a response was not acceptable to me.

Late Sept - I was still receiving emails so went into my online account to unsubscribe from there. Oct 2 - Received email from Trip Advisor stating they had attached my review to the wrong "property". They asked I resubmit. My reply on the same day - in much kinder words - said too little too late and ended with "Strange customer service you have".

Oct 3 - Trip Advisor emails me again stating "We have completed your listing request, and you can now find it here on our site." with a link attached. The link led to a page containing the name of the restaurant - no review. I didn't respond. Later that day Trip Advisor sent yet another email saying my request had been closed, but could be reopened by replying. I didn't. Happily on Yelp since September.

The other business, who has always had terrible reviews, reported me as having fraudulent reviews posted to their page. Trip Advisor removed several of my positive posts, consequently, yet allowed unusual consistent negative posts to be added to my business page. My customers who wrote the great reviews have contacted me all upset, realizing theirs were removed for no reason.

I reported the other business (before knowing they had done it to me) and said these were posts that were made fraudulently. They would not take them down. They actually responded to my email inquiries within minutes, saying they had reviewed everything. That is ridiculous! The other business suddenly had excellent and long reviews and the owner responded on her page with direct digs to me and my business. When I reported it, TA ignored it.

I am wondering if the other business is somehow paying them, as TA continues to take my posts down. It is ridiculous. Mine are honest, legitimate posts. I never put the other business down in any of my responses, ever. As a matter of fact, I always thank people for posting, mentioning that there are several great businesses in town and that I am happy when people give reviews so others can choose the one that is right for them. I am never rude and my posts are all fair and honest. What is up with TA? Can we get our businesses off the stupid list to stop this craziness? I understand that all the review work and taking down of posts are done in a foreign country. This is so unfair to honest people with honest and excellent businesses they have worked hard to build. AVOID TRIPADVISOR!!! Two years ago (24 months), we have started notifying TripAdvisor about wrong plot-location we had in our profile, visible for the guests. Since then, nothing has been changed, even though we have sent them more than 30 e-mails. The location of our property at their website is visualized wrong and thus misleading our potential guests and causes to us financial losses. Without our permission Tripadvisor uploads photos in our profile which are clearly representing something else but not our property. They find them on the web without any confirmation from our side to publish them. In the definition of the Court of Justice of EU, TripAdvisor is a search engine for accommodations, restaurants, etc. As a consequence, we would like to point out, that Tripadvisor is far from being useful for the customers, as well as for the business owners, especially when a guest, guided by their information, is looking for a certain accommodation 6 kilometers away from its real location. It seems that Tripadvisor don't care about their customers and their primitive structure consists only of unprofessional and incompetent employees. We would like to remind you that our property (Levitt Hostel) is a private trade mark (part by Levitt Group) and is preserved by European Trade Law.

Therefore you are not allowed to do any business without our permission. We have already send you more than 100 notifications for this matter. In case our property is still visible at your website in 5 business days we will turn to the courts for protection of our intellectual property. We will block and filter Tripadvisor in our network, so that no one from our guests will have access to Tripadvisor anymore..

In addition, we were invited by Tripadvisor representative (10 -15 times) to join their priority listing. WE AGREED AND PAID HUGE PRICE FOR PRIORITY LISTING, but in return, WE RECEIVE 0 customers and 2 years of negligence towards our reasonable complain about the wrong position on their map and fake pictures!!! That was my experience, and my observation, the place was horrible. I was told that the review was pulled because it was not my personal experience. I challenged that determination, and some time later (a long, long time) another rejection came to me saying the review could not run because I was not allowed to report on things others had told me (I mentioned in my review that I had spoken with a volunteer while there) or the experience of others (huh?). Obviously, they are just looking for a reason to pull a review that they perceive as troublesome. I assume that the aquarium management contacted them and told them to pull it (the review did run for a short time). I used to trust TA and consult their site when planning a trip. Being upfront, I used to really like TripAdvisor and in the last year have used it to research lots of places and place good reviews for most places and sites we've been to. I've even booked accommodation through their service satisfied that their "Peace of Mind" guarantee was a few clicks away if the worst happened. I even went as far as contacting a TripAdvisor representative to ask what the process was as to how I contacted them if a 'rental' wasn't as advertised or failed to even come through.

With all this under my belt my family & I set off for our apartment in sunny Dubrovnik only to find out it wasn't as advertised (only sleeps 3 at best not 5 and was only 2 rooms & a fridge, not 3 rooms and a kitchen). Needless to say, I spent some hours on the phone and talking to other very helpful locals before finding alternative accommodation that could take my family - at significant extra cost.

I wasn't worried though as we had the peace of mind guarantee that would cover the extra cost of the new and significantly more expensive apartment. So later that evening I dropped TA an email to customer services as I had already pre-discovered and in due course (2 days) they replied and gave me a 2nd email address.

I have contacted that address only to be told that their 'peace of mind' guarantee only works if you contact them on the day of the hire itself - nowhere on their T&Cs or indeed the FAQ they pointed me at does it a) include that detail, b) nor their specific email address. So despite me having evidence of having generically contacted TA on the day and of trying to phone their UK helpline number (no answer), they have dismissed my claim out of hand and we are now €500 poorer off.

To say I'm hacked off is an understatement and I shall just have to hope that my separate travel insurance will cover this loss. I also intend to set about removing every single review I have ever made and do what I can to not recommend them or use their services ever again. I can only advise the same to the rest of you.

A representative from the operating company (holiday.lettings.co.uk from TripAdvisor) had requested a booking reference number and home ID and all required information has been supplied. After that a representative had vanished (currently 10 days). Three days ago I have asked his decision with respect to my request and I got no response.

I think TripAdvisor website is a priceless information for tourist. However a business activity as a rental one is of a low quality, without respect to a customer due to an operating company from TripAdvisor. I seriously suggest readers do not book a rental apartment by TripAdvisor.

Our hotel takes pride in offering guests a special stay while lodging with us. In July of 2014, we advised TripAdvisor that we did not want to RENEW our annual fee because we decided NOT to ask guests to REVIEW the BGH. We feel ASKING for reviews is an inconvenience to guests. Shortly after requesting to be dropped as a customer from TripAdvisor, we received a letter advising that TripAdvisor has evidence that we have been soliciting REVIEWS from an outside source and placed a warning that some of our REVIEWS are suspicious on our TripAdvisor review page. We mailed a letter to TripAdvisor asking for proof of tainted REVIEWS and they failed to respond. We still have NOT received a refund for our fees, as per our request.

TripAdvisor is refusing to publish and deleting good reviews. Good reviews were being posted onto the site and within 72 hrs, they were being taken off. Also customers have alerted us that reviews they have written are being published! When TripAdvisor is being questioned about this, they say they are against guidelines, the ones that were published and deleted were well within the guidelines. We are losing customers and our reputation to customers who use TripAdvisor as a guide. We have a following of of over 2000 fans on Facebook who like our restaurant and yet all TripAdvisor is interested in is publishing poor reviews. It also seems very suspicious. When we receive poor reviews, we get emailed by TripAdvisor asking us to pay to improve our online reputation!

I stayed in Fatima Guesthouse, which was the worst experience in all my Brazilian stays (visited Brazil several times and traveled all over Brazil). I booked the room with Fatima directly, she had different prices on different websites, and when I asked for the price I saw on BB Brazil, she 'said' that price is not available anymore. I told her that I can pay 150RS/night. She emailed me that she had an 'alternative' room. She wrote: 'I have a alternative room. This alternative I can do R$160,00 for you per night without breakfast'. Nothing more. I saw a lot of good reviews so I thought it must be a good place... She sent me the address, but she couldn't tell me how to get there by bus, she told me to ask at the airport... (I thought she should know this!)

When I arrived it was Theresa (the employee) who received me. Didn't speak English, she couldn't give me information. She said to speak to Julia who will arrive in the night. Julia came, she seemed to be a sweet girl. She was proud of saying to be an actress! The nights were horrible.. across the street there is a disco bar, the music so loud if you were trying to sleep inside a disco. The 'alternative' room had NO door, basically the accommodation was in the living room! and there was just a wooden curtain. Of course NO key.... I thought, "Ok, I do my best to resist as I had a busy schedule, and did not have time to look for another place." The week after, I came back, hoping that would be less noisier during the week... NOPE! Music and Party every night... However I still did not say a word... But one night I woke up at 2 am as a young man and a young woman were screaming and fighting violently in the living room just next to me... I called out, "por favor," and "please," but they did not stop... I could not sleep that night... and of course was very tired the next day...

As I arrived to the 'Guesthouse,' Julia was there, I mentioned her that I woke up the night before due to the violent fight in the living room besides the noise after the disco.. She said she didn't hear it... I told her that I was really tired, and that I really would like to sleep during the night and that I was concerned about the fight in the living room. She completely changed and she said, "What do you want? If you don't like it here, pack and leave!" She also said that I can take the inside room, which is more expensive. I told her that I just really need to sleep during the night and that is what I paid for. I asked her whether she would like to sleep like that on her holiday? She couldn't answer. I told her that I cannot pay more, and that they should have advised that there is so much noise...

She said that I am not happy, and she was getting more and more aggressive and she screamed to LEAVE THE HOUSE NOW! I said that I was not leaving as I booked the room and I think I have the right to sleep. She was screaming that she would call the police. I asked her to call the police, as I thought I must have some consumer/tourist rights here. I asked her to give me an invoice or receipt for the monies I paid. She said, "She doesn't give any receipt, this is a guesthouse. That's it." I asked her to write a paper of the amount I paid, but she refused. I asked her to call the famous woman Fatima (who rents the rooms, and it seems it is totally illegal and guests do not have any rights), and she threatened me that Fatima now will make a big mess. OK. I spoke to Fatima, and explained her what happened and that I need to sleep during the night. Fatima got also very rude and told me to leave the house. I told her I wasn't going anywhere and I hang up on her because she was really an unpleasant and rude woman on the phone.

Afterwards Julia started screaming to me, "** you, ** you, you are crazy." I believe she was acting like in her soap operas. I was thinking this is certainly NOT the way to speak to your guests (nobody wants to be treated like this, especially on a holiday) and not the way to solve a problem. I told her to call the police and I wasn't going anywhere. Suddenly she changed, she started to cry, and she said really rudely to move to the other room... She was talking down to me if I was her servant (as probably she is used to treat their two lady servants at home). She started to cry more and she said, "I am so sorry." I was shocked. What is going on here?

Well, certainly, this is not a place that I ever recommend to anyone. Fatima and Julia did not behave nicely with me even though I respected them and their house rules. I think guests DO have rights and should not be treated like this! I spoke to other guests as well staying there, and strangely all them complained... (wondering how they get the good results..) As I stayed in the inside room, it was also noisy, and the other guests told me that they woke up or couldn't sleep every night from the noise.

This is NOT a guesthouse, but a really very old apartment, where doors can hardly be closed, the shower works bad, very old. The kitchen is very old too. This is a place where rooms are rented out illegally and you do not get a receipt or a paper for the money you pay! This is illegal Brazil, with 2 rude and unpleasant women. I never received any information (only maps were put in the room). The internet is very slow and very often does not work. There is no breakfast included, even though it is advertised as bed and breakfast. They don't make the bed or change towels as they do in a normal guesthouse. Also, I found a lot of ants and insects in the room. Not good!

Tripadvisor does not publish the truth. They say they protect families and do not publish such reports. Yes, Tripadvisor wants families to go to horror places, and where the host use bad language... That's about TripAdvisor! Don't TRUST THEM, and if you are my friend, I will not sent you to the Horror Guesthouse.

The pictures that were on the Trip Advisor website and the campground's own website when I made my reservation via phone were VERY MISLEADING (note - the owners and Trip Advisor have since removed the photos). We paid in full prior to arriving and we checked in. When we found out that the campground wasn't what the pictures portrayed (tents crammed together, 2 picnic tables shared by 6 sites, etc., we left and asked for a refund, which the owners refused to give us). When we got back home we left an honest and truthful review on Trip Advisor, which the owners clearly had removed - because they pay Trip Advisor. In June 2012, I was contacted by TripAdvisor (TA) and asked if I would like a business listing for our small B&B hotel. At around $450 a year / $1.23 a day, given the amount of tourists who use TA, I was happy to do so, and did. In June 2013, I received an Email from TA, informing me that they had taken $857.27 to pay for my listing in 2013-14. This represented an increase of 190% fee increase in one year. Very irritated, and with enormous investment of my time, I finally got through to some guy at trip advisor (its like trying to call God!). I informed him that at this price, I could not afford to renew the listing and wished to have my money refunded. I was told that this was not policy, I had to pay, and in any case it was only a little more than 2 per day - what did I think I was complaining about?

I stated very clearly that the business listing was cancelled and they were not authorized to take any further money from my account. I was told at this point, that I could cancel this service, this over my business listing. I have tried repeatedly, over the business listing, to contact TA to no avail; each attempt at contact via Email comes back as follows:

"Subject: Undeliverable: Business Listings - Cancel product. Delivery has failed to these recipients or groups: ownerhelp@tripadvisor.co.uk. The email address you entered couldn't be found. Please check the recipient's email address and try to resend the message. If the problem continues, please contact your helpdesk."

I also changed my debit card (in June last year) to ensure that they could not use my card again. I thought I was safe this year..! However, two days ago I received an Email from TA, this time thanking me for renewing my business listing and informing me that they will be taking $1,930.63 to pay for my listing in 2013-14. This now represents an increase of 233.37% fee increase in one year, and a stinking increase of 429% on 2012. I have NO IDEA where they got my new debit card details from, I did NOT give it to them. I contacted the debit card dispute centre at my bank and was informed that they could not stop this payment as a debit card was a commitment to payment! Mind you, if you go over your overdraft limit, they stop payments soon enough! I have now had to instruct my bank to freeze my account to prevent the payment being sent to TA. Wonderful for business, is it not.

TA is ripping off small hotels every day. It is not enough that anyone can write whatever they want in a review about a business; they are in no way concerned to know if someone has actually stayed in the place they are reviewing. I have successfully had four reviews removed when I proved they were fake, however, since they were live online of a period of time before being removed, the damage had been done. If someone has stayed somewhere, they can write whatever they want - and often do - if they decide they don't like you/your B&B or anything else for that matter. These reviews destroy businesses and peoples lives. In effect, TA has you helpless over a barrel - and also charge you - whilst they do whatever they want with you.

TripAdvisor cancelled the hold, but it would take up to 10 days for the hold to be removed.

TripAdvisor was totally unwilling to help expedite the removal of the hold. They wouldn't provide even a short letter on their letterhead, confirming the charge wouldn't be removed. TRIPADVISOR and FlipKey - FRAUD. I booked apartment in central London via TripAdvisor paying also for their "peace of mind policy" insurance (88 $). I gave Visa card number and instead of blocking money on my account, they collected it immediately. I tried to contact the owner Martin, I wrote him several times on his e-mail stated on FlipKey but he did not respond. So I called the number provided in booking and man picked up: he said that I got the wrong number, that he is Martin indeed but he does not rent any apartments...

I tried to find property on FlipKey or TripAdvisor but... It was not listed anymore... They removed it as they "found out that this individual does not have right to rent those apartments" but they were happy to keep my money on TripAdvisor account (quite profitable business, if you think about number of clients) and they didn't bother to inform me about the situation! I contacted FlipKey and they said they will "cancel" my booking of non-existing property and return me money. I got 1 day to find a hotel in London and I do not have to mention that prices were overwhelming.

TripAdvisor returned my money (US$2358.00) after 10 days (payment on 4.04, return on my account on 18.04) but... I am from Poland so to my horror I noticed that I miss 910.47 PLN (about 300$, which is actually half of my monthly salary) - there was the spread!!! I paid the insurance so of course I complained to TripAdvisor to give me back that difference: without any result, they said that they reimbursed fee in full (so even if that was totally their fault, I had to bear the cost of this transaction). Their insurance is obviously meaningless (their latest answer is: "When you paid for this property on FlipKey, we charged you $2358.00. We subsequently issued a full refund of $2358.00. There are no more funds left in our system for this reservation and we are therefore unable to issue any further refunds. I apologize for any inconvenience.") Contact with support desk is not so easy and stress I had trying to find accommodation for 5 people just before departure was terrible.

It is a disgrace for renown service to behave like this. So: never ever again! Summary: Seek other agencies, DO NOT book via TripAdvisor or FlipKey - they do not take any responsibility of whatsoever they advertise, just your double fees you are paying. Never give them your card number - they do not block money like booking.com but collect it and keep on own account. They call it safe way - think for yourself for whom it is safe and profitable. Pay after arrival and if it is not possible, seek other accommodation (that was advice from their support desk 1 day before my departure, when money for my hotel in London were still on their account!). Do not bother with this insurance - it is worthless - they said it covers up to 10,000 $ but just try to get something of cost you paid (actually they should also give me back money for my hotel - it was much more than cost of this apartment.)

It has now happened twice that Tripadvisor has removed reviews I have posted. Both reviews were honest reviews containing a mixture of positive and negative aspects. Both reviews were accepted by the censors and posted. One of the service provider have responded to posting and have asked for more details which of course I was unable to provide since TA does not permit responses. I have also felt that the issues I have described (unsanitary food handling and unsafe tour buses without safety belt did not required more details).

After a week, I have noticed that TA has removed my listing without any notification to me. It is impossible to contact TA as the "Contact us" option only leads to FAQ, but I have still asked for an explanation. I have received no response. My question to TA: What is the point of the review process if honest, realistic reviews are removed to accommodate business owners who can claim that they are fraudulent (which is the only explanation). As for myself, I will stop participating and will not use TA as I cannot be sure of the integrity of the reviews. TA, this is self-defeating which in years to come will completely erode your reputation and without it you will be just another advertising platform.

The following review was just pulled. I was e-mailed by others that said the owner would have it removed by TripAdvisor or by me. He has been calling me telling me to remove my review. This is how he gets a positive rating. He either bullies people to remove their review or tells TripAdvisor it is fake or contains errors??? I was fair. I gave him 3 out of 5 stars. He did not deserve 5 stars for what is noted below. I have four people who will attest to this review. I saw sites that post positive TripAdvisor reviews for vendors for a fee. But, my review is real. I was warned. I will not use TripAdvisor to plan a trip again! They are equally responsible for what happened on my trip. Shame on you. (I am contacting state officials about violations the vendor engaged in).

Removed Review - Sedona Sacred Earth Private Tours: We scheduled 4 tours several months ago to make sure we had the reservation and to allow the owner (Clint Frakes) to work out any details/scheduling he needed to do before each tour. The Sedona tour was fine. One site we specified was missed, but we saw most everything we wanted to see. My crew was elderly and/or handicapped. He did not provide much assistance, opening doors, getting out of the vehicle etc. My crew noticed this.

The second tour was to the Grand Canyon. Miguel ** was the driver/guide on this tour. He was very accommodating. We had brought some snacks of our own, but he had a cooler of snacks and water for us. He opened doors and assisted family members in and out of the vehicle. He even put a passenger's oxygen machine next to him to provide more room for other passengers. We treated him to dinner at a lovely restaurant overlooking the Grand Canyon. He seemed very conscientious and sweet. I am happy Miguel called me a few days before the tour and suggested we made reservations at the restaurant. It was a very nice day.

The 3rd tour was to Hopi Sites. It was far less than expected. Clint Frakes was the driver/guide. He brought us to buy snacks, because he had nothing for us. I bought juice, water, carrots, some crackers, but did not know that was all I would get to eat that day. I told him ahead of time, I was a vegetarian, and he assured me I would have a vegetarian plate. I got to sit and watch others eat while I had a piece of bread (Clint had several Helpings). Allen (the Hopi Guide), said just pick the meat out. He told me later that they did not know I was a vegetarian. Clint did not tell him.

As a Hopi guide, Allen, was marginal. He used his position as a platform to espouse his views on Christianity. I found it very interesting that he interpreted ancient Puebloan drawings in a way that included the awful Christians, since the drawings were made before Christian contact. The local rangers were surprised by his interpretations and pointed us to a book they recommended on the drawings. We tried to be polite to Allen and his views, said little when we knew he was getting things wrong, or exposing opinions not shared by all. He seemed proud of not being educated. He did not need books/education. But, guides need to provide more than made up stories.

To top the day off, I had to splint a leg, due to the back door of the vehicle being too heavy to lift by myself (popping a tendon in a leg). Help with doors would be nice. I also got a lecture from Clint because I looked surprised because Hopis steal eagle babies from nests, raise the birds, and then sacrifice them. I did not say a word when the story was told by Allen, but later I told Clint that I was entitled to my own views which are not to kill, especially endangered or protected species. I do have my own views that I kept to myself in front of Allen. And, I did not appreciate the lecture from Clint (almost yelled at me).

My travel mates did not appreciate me hobbling through the day, me not eating, and me paying extra for food and a guide that was mediocre at best ($60 for food; $160 extra for Allen). The next day we learned that there was a Hopi restaurant and cultural center where we all could have eaten what we wanted. This would have helped! We also wanted to visit Hopi vendors; Clint claimed the only one he knew just left for Australia. We visited some drunk individuals who repeatedly pushed a badly stained basket and unfinished carvings. He let us put up with them for a long time w/ no intervention. This was unprofessional. A visit to the vendors at the cultural center would have been appreciated.

The 4th tour was supposed to be to 4 corners area Covering Three Sites: Antelope Canyon, Horse Shoe Bend, and Monument Valley. Clint was repeatedly asked to get me the details for Antelope Canyon and Monument Valley. Evidently, he had information from 3 or 4 years ago, but nothing current. I paid him to arrange this tour, not for me to call ahead for the information I should have. The Antelope Canyon tours now run every few hours. Since we were a few minutes late for one we would have a long wait for the next. That would cause us to miss the Monument Valley tour.

George (our guide/driver) felt horrible, because he was led to believe nothing had changed from 3 or 4 years ago. He did take us to a Burger King with stuff on display and another site where most of my crew could not go, due to high winds. He tried to make up for things with charming stories and being very courteous. If he had the Antelope Canyon time schedule ahead of time, we would have made the tour. The fees for the Monument Valley Tour have also gone up in 4 years from $70 per person to $85 per person.

I am happy I had extra cash. Again, I made reservations with Clint months ago for all 4 tours. I just expected more. I feel George is a lovely person, and would have looked up the details himself, if it was his business. He works part-time for this agency and another (Safari Jeep). I just expected better for the first-class prices I paid per tour. We will probably not get to see these places again, and it just was not first class.

We had booked a property in Istanbul via TripAdvisor and paid through HolidayLettings (a TA company). HL guarantees to protect our rights in case we do not get access to the apartment and for that charges a brokerage fee. We paid only because we were going to Istanbul for the first time and HL's selling proposition of the guarantee was something that would protect us.

Now when we reached Istanbul, we were not given the apartment that was shown on the TA site. It was a Sunday and when we complained to the staff that said that we would be able to speak to the owner on Monday and till then we would have to wait. We didn't realize, but this is how the owner gained the time. When we spoke to the owner the next day, he admitted that we were not given the apartment because that's booked be another party and showed us that this was a TA fault that they have sent him wrong booking information. To cut the story short, we contacted TA through their feedback email with the following content (this will also tell you what happened to us in Istanbul and why we didn't contact TA from Istanbul):

"We booked an apartment via Tripadvisor in Istanbul for the period December 22 - 30, 2013. On our arrival we found that the company ** owned by Mr. ** has a different apartment than the one we booked. We had booked for 8 people 3 bedroom 8 bed apartment and were given a 2 bedroom 6 bed apartment. Our booking was for 3 couples and 2 children, the apartment given to us was insufficient and had a bunker bed, one of our guests who has severe back problem had to sleep on the floor, the other guests had to sleep in the room with boiler that was very noisy and uncomfortable to sleep.

We immediately informed this to Mr. **, an employee of ** and got the response that the matter can only be handled on the following Monday when the owner would arrive. We met the owner on Monday morning and was informed that the apartment that we booked and the confirmation that he had received are of two different apartments. He says we booked the place where he had lodged us. The TripAdvisor confirmation to our payment email has a link that took us to an apartment that we actually booked. The apartment we were lodged is this and showed Dec 24-30 on Dec 24 as available **. Today when we wanted to access our booked apartment, we learnt that that apartment does not exist on the TripAdvisor site. We suspect that this is intentional.

Here is the email that I have received from TripAdvisor to review the apartment:

The apartment we actually booked is shown in link in confirmation email as follows and is shown as booked but we are not lodged there **. And Mr. ** insisted that he had lodged us in the right place. Today we found out that this link has been removed. And when I tried to review this today, I got an invalid address response.

After a couple of SMS exchanges, Mr. ** offered to help us. You can imagine our lost confidence on Tripadvisor as we had paid for one apartment and are lodged in much smaller with fewer rooms and beds. The 'help' offered by Mr. ** was 10 miles away on 5th floor and for a few days and then we would have to move to 2 more places. We had to spend one hour to get there and inspect the apartment. We eventually stayed in the apartment given to us in crammed situation.

When we tried to argue with him on Tuesday the 24th December, he got really aggressive and threatened us that that was his place and we better stay where we were. In our family we had elders and children and this was our first time in Istanbul, we all got scared and refrained from informing TripAdvisor because of the threats."

To our surprise, we got a call from TA the very next day, I explained everything again and the caller asked for more photographs and SMS texts that were exchanged. I also iterated at that point that the owner had already accepted that we were not living in the apartment that we saw on the website. This seemed like a fair case, but after 10 days, we got the following email from TA Staff:

"We have reviewed your request claim for compensation for your holiday (**). Though we have notified the owner of the property and will be monitoring any other feedback provided about holidays at this property, we are unable to provide compensation due to the insufficient amount of evidence to substantiate your claim.

Any further claims for compensation must be discussed directly with the owner of the property. We apologize any inconvenience caused."

I am not sure what is more evidence than the owner admitting that the apartment is not the same. We called and waited on the line for 10 minutes, but no response from the agents. The links have been changed and my review of the apartment including the cheating part was published 9 days after the submission (TA says that it takes one week to get any review published). Here is the property that we lived in, the photographs are misleading as they do not show the boiler in the room that is used for heating and makes noise that disturbs sleep, these photographs also do not show the broken floor etc. **

It all started when I received 2 emails from Trip Advisor on the September 19th, 2013 asking me 'Don't Forget' to Rate & Review myself? The same email is sent to me again on October 24th as a reminder. I put a review on that reply and received an Official Notification on December 13th that TA will be monitoring my movement and might downgrade my ranking. Then, I disputed that the emails are very misleading to rate myself and moreover are sent to me twice and clearer instructions should be emphasis here. But then, no exact answer.

The worst is that my ranking is downgraded from 5th to 14th in less than a week without knowing what mistake I have done since the Official Notification dated December 13th. I am really frustrated over this matter and would like to know what other mistake have I done as a punishment after the O/Notification. It is sad too to see my number of reviews are more than other owners ranked above me but mine being downgraded and TA does not look into my complaint and give me any reason at all!

These errors are being passed on to consumers, affecting their travel and travel plans, as well as my ability to accurately present my property to the public. I have emailed them on 5-6 occasions during the past month, requesting that someone contact me (they have no customer service phone number that I can find), preferably by phone, to discuss my problems, but have not received a response to my specific problems, either by email or phone. Meanwhile, I am paying them a listing fee, but failing to receive the paid for service.

Wrote a truthful review on TripAdvisor about a stay in a Hampton Inn Hotel. We stayed in the Chapel Hill Hampton Inn where we notice a bug in our room. We flushed it thinking it must have come from outside. Next day we had home eat up with bedbugs, called hotel. About 3 days later, they contacted us and said they didn't see anything. We warned them not to let anyone stay in that room, but they did. We reported to the health department and lo and behold, the hotel called back to inform us yes, indeed they did have bedbugs. During this nightmare, we tried to warn people on TripAdvisor but they refused to print our review and even suggested we use the title overzealous maid service. Seriously, I would have laughed if I was not so angry. TripAdvisor is obviously there to sell BS and rooms and not to protect or provide an honest website you can believe or depend on. I do not words to describe how awful the service was with this company. We booked a vacation rental in New Orleans and when we arrived, the place was filthy, not as described, and parts of it were unsafe. The door would not even lock and it was totally unsuitable. After we refused to stay there, the owner kept the money and despite every attempt TripAdvisor will do nothing to try to help us recover the money. We lost nearly $500 and found ourselves stranded in a strange city in the dark at rush hour. TripAdvisor states that no matter how filthy the place is, we all have different standards of what is clean. Not their problem. Also, they are seemingly not concerned by safety issues or descriptions that are downright lies. Complain to them and you end up in an Indian call center. Then you go to an American who stonewalls you, lies to you about emailing you back (twice) and then you just get the runaround till you are exhausted and give up. It nearly ruined our vacation. I have written a detailed complaint as a review at their site but there is small chance it will help us recover the money. Shame on them.

I found a cabin on TA and wanted to book it. I put in the nights I wanted and clicked "make inquiry" which is the only option offered. It brought me to a screen where I basically wrote an email to the owner's about wanting to book it. After sending the email, the next screen it brought me to said "the owner will contact you through your rental inbox. Would you like to book now?" So I clicked on book now and went through the process of putting in my credit card information. It notified me that the owner had 48 hours to accept or deny my request.

In the meantime, the owner contacted me and I signed a rental agreement which had me put in my CC info. The owner calls me a little while later and tells me that my payment didn't go through. So I look at my bank account and TripAdvisor had put a hold on my account. I called the owner of the property and they said they process their payments outside of TA and have no clue why TA would have asked for payment when they don't even have the owner's bank account information to deposit it. So what were they going to do with my money?

I called TA back and told them that I booked outside of them and I wanted to cancel that booking request. They first cancelled it and said that was it. I hung up and looked at my TA account and it was still there. So I called back to confirm that it was cancelled. She said yes. I asked if I could get that in writing. She reluctantly sent me an email saying it was cancelled. When I looked at my bank account, it was still showing the hold. I called my bank and they said it could be up to 72 business hours before the hold would disappear, but if TripAdvisor would write a letter to them stating that they are releasing the hold and signed it, they would release it that day. I called TA and they refused to write any such letter. All they would say is "no, sorry, we can't do that". Luckily the owner of the house was amazing and she understood. She held the cabin for me until the payment was released.

Hospitality industry warning - TripAdvisor removes your ability to show your domain in their advertising and reduces your ability to be seen independent of TripAdvisor's advertising. The internet is supposed to be the great equalizer between the Franchised and the little independent. However in the hospitality industry it seems the industry has given up their rights by allowing their Domain names not to be included in advertising. Look at the largest advertiser TripAdvisor.com .ca, .uk, .fr, .al and many more of their domains.

What does this mean for me the consumer that loves to research on TripAdvisor? It means you may not be able to access the truly great hotels as no link is provided on TripAdvisor if the hotel doesn't pay. For a 10 room hotel the hotel will be paying close to $1000.00 a year advertising through them yet still have their domain name withheld! - look carefully when doing Google searches for the business domain name, not the dozen with TripAdvisor in it. You may help keep the cost of businesses lower because the business won't be paying such high advertising costs.

Best case: If you advertise with TripAdvisor, people don't appear to be able to contact you directly if they have a problem so maybe they will then write a complaint review? Worst Case: If you don't advertise with them and you have even 1 review, your business name could show up a dozen times under their various country domains especially if looking for you from another country, and in each one clients are not able to contact you. Your prospect will be able to request reservations from TripAdvisor advertisers your competition however. One would think Google would reduce this to 1 listing of TripAdvisor as additional listings are counter to good search engines.

TripAdvisor spells their name as 1 word, a powerful method to provide uniqueness on the internet, yet they deny the hospitality industry the right to use the hospitality business domain name as the business name. If you have registered your name as 1 word you may have rights to demand that be used. Personally I feel this should be addressed by a Consumer Affairs or Anti Combines Act as it is reducing fair trade in the market place in my opinion.

What if you as a hospitality business say "I don't have the problem". Well maybe you do for someone doing a look up outside your country, for some reason Google appears to allow multiple country listings of TripAdvisor so your 1 domain is buried amongst perhaps a dozen of TripAdvisor. Unfortunately Google also does not allow Google Places or Google+ listings without a land line telephone number, something often not available in remote lodges or exotic countries, so that Google listing may not be a possibility. So how does TripAdvisor rate in listings?

In short, what is the solution - in my opinion bring back free trade, and open search, Domain names must be used in advertising business to even guarantee the review is of the company in question. Search engine companies - realize that providing multiple advertising links to the same advertiser going under many domain names is in my opinion the worst form of Spamming, limit them to 1. Consider above a review of TripAdvisor - 1 star today.

I have over 75 excellent ratings from TripAdvisor and one terrible rating, written by an ex-employee who is now threatening us for money to remove his false review. TripAdvisor will not respond back to us, and frankly their platform was built to accommodate the wrongdoing that it knew it was gearing up to profit from. America has become what it is as we have justified winning at any expense, including ignoring morality and everything that made this country great. It's critical to understand that by destroying evil such as TripAdvisor, it's one small step to fight greed, which has no limits and as a result typically constitutes most evil.

If anyone would like to sue this company I am thrilled to join in this, so please let me know. Until then I guess we need to integrate the money we need to pay people that blackmail us into our budget here out our company, sort of an extortion fund, as even if literally receiving threats, you will only get a response that the post meets all TA guidelines. They have a number that you can call for help..... you get two options. Option one, you get a directory and guess over and over at a 3 digit extension as they do not actually want anybody to get through the tube. Or option two, which tells you to go back to their website where all complaints are handled within your limitation of typing a minimal amount of characters that does not allow for a proper explanation.

Lastly I think punitive damages could pay off big time if a group could get together on this, as many documented cases exist, including myself, where TA will impact your ratings based on how much they are sick of hearing your complaints. They are nothing more than cyber criminals, a cyber mob. This is resulting in good, hardworking people losing hope in America, and truth. Once we wore out the written word and find a fancy way to make distributing complete lies about people acceptable, we have a big problem here. The written word used to serve as a watchdog to protect truth, so seeing how it is acceptable to consider writing lies not a big deal starts us down a path of even greater corruption.

We are becoming a lawless nation. We cannot let money manipulate everything. The one thing I know for sure is if we put the board of TA on a lie detector and asked them if they on any level run that company in the sake of truth, I know what the outcome would be. Total unconcern for anything that is right. Maybe we go to MA and get answers from the cowards directly, hiding in the office, killing off your families' potential so theirs can have a better life. I am willing to organize anything to stop these cyber criminals so if anyone has similar passion on this please let me know. Eventually our children are going to have to live in this cesspool that we are creating here in USA. There is more to life than money.

These guys act as the judge, jury and executioner when it comes to demanding that they at least check out the validity of a consumer's complaint. Unlike the BBB, they are driven by profit/greed via advertisers and the more negative complaints, the more money they make at the expense of small business persons who may not have the legal resources to sue in federal court. Here is my sad story. Usually, when we take a vacation, we book a nice hotel at the beach, enjoy the service and feel secure that our best interest is being put forward. This summer, I decided to try something different. I wanted to rent a beach house and break away from the norm. So I thought I would try Trip Advisor since they claim to be the best. Here was the outcome. I booked this property for a few days for this Aug. 2013 through the Trip advisor/Flipkey website and was ripped off by another party that had compromised the website and or the owners email address. Basically, we were scammed out of over $500.00 and we will not be taking a vacation along with our money not being returned.

A week from our arrival date we were told the house has burned down and they were really sorry, along with a lot of other lies. So then the crook says, "We will refund your money and give you an additional $250. As a sign of good faith along with a free week in the future"... Yeah right! Once bitten shame on you, twice bitten shame on me! Oh, and would I please send over some new bank transfer information? It really is amazing how the major website providers still have this problem with petty theft. By making the proper investment, these intrusions can be filtered. So all along, I was dealing with an imposter using the owners name, if in fact it is a real property and is truly on the market for rent. Remember I booked the house via Trip Advisor and sent the information through their site to the supposed owner of the home.

After contacting Trip Advisor about my concern that I was being ripped off they kicked the can over to the company Flipkey and offered me no help what so ever even though I booked the property via the Trip Advisor site. This will be the last time I use Trip advisor for anything, outside of reviewing Trip Advisor's customer service or lack of. The customer service rep at Flipkey told me most likely, I have in fact been taken for my money and that they would make contact with the real owner to see if they were aware of dealing with me, just to double check. Gee, thanks a lot, how about securing your web site!! I was told this happens a lot, thanks for letting me know now!!

I would recommend not using these websites to book travel since the only real concern is their fee and in fact offer you no protection what so ever. DEAL WITH THE OWNER DIRECT! Because when you need help from the travel site providers, they disappear faster than the crooks! Looks like we will be having a staycation this year. Bummer for the kids. PS: As of today, I have been in touch with the real owner [I think] and she is shocked as well that this has happened and sorry as well. Much more than what I got from Trip Advisor. Once again, my advice is to book direct!

Teach’s Island Bar & Grill is a trademarked restaurant name and business owned by G2ZS Corporation and as such, was closed in 2012. It was located in Teach’s Lair Marina, Hatteras, NC. G2ZS Corporation relocated and reopened as Teach’s Island in May of 2013 in a different location in Hatteras (www.teachsisland.com). Repeated attempts to make this website correction online in TripAdvisor have been made to no avail. There seems to be no way to contact a real person to resolve this issue. There is no longer a Teach’s Island Bar & Grill. The former location is now occupied by The Billfish Company. Somehow, the two restaurants reviews have merged into one in TripAdvisor.

Visitors’ pictures on the site are pictures of the Billfish Co. Attempts to remove pictures of the Billfish Co. from their listing of Teach’s Island have been futile. People are going to their former location thinking they are eating at Teach’s. The Billfish Co. reviews are being posted to the Teach’s Island Bar & Grill along with the pictures. Attempts to have the correct name, Teach’s Island, listed as a restaurant on Hatteras Island have also been ignored. TripAdvisor’s lack of response to repeated requests to remove a closed restaurant listing trademarked in NC has created the false impression that the restaurant remains open in the same location as it did for 5 years. People are going to the old restaurant location in error; it has created a continuing economic loss of business and reputation.

Hatteras Island is a tiny resort community 30 miles off the NC Coast, and business patterns there are quite different. Visitors who revisit Hatteras tend go their favorite spots when they return. S2GS Corporation has requested TripAdvisor to list their restaurant website correctly - www.teachsisland.com - and credit the reviews and photos posted, good or bad to it, correctly. TripAdvisor has been responsive to some edits attempted by G2ZS Corporation to remove the erroneous and reviews, but refuse to acknowledge the repeated requests of the owners of the registered trademark Teach’s Island to remove the listing of the closed Teach’s Island Bar & Grill and list Teach’s Island. This is mixed up mess. It has, without question, negatively affected our business. UrbanSpoon and Yelp had no problem taking down the old listing and listing Teach’s Island correctly.

In conclusion, TripAdvisor has refused delisting a closed restaurant. They have posted pictures and reviews of a different restaurant to the closed restaurant. They have refused to list correctly the relocated Teach’s Island. The state of NC will not allow Bar and Grill to be part of a trademarked name.

As a business owner who faces reviews that are false, you have no way of knowing about them unless, as in my case, a customer or someone tells you. Most of the suits against Trip Advisor (TA) focus on defamation, which they cite section 230 of The Communications Decency Act as relief from prosecution, essentially that states that they aren't liable for the content they publish... But if that is true, aren't they responsible for the content they publish? Why doesn't a suit focus on their responsibility to inform a business owner that a review has been published? In not doing so, they are knowingly spreading potentially false information without providing the business owner a remedy to respond. Not every business owner is a member of TA.

If we can't ding TA on liability, we should at least hold them responsible for the information they publish (and profit) from by forcing them to notify business owners in such a manner that releases their responsibility in the review they publish. Perfect for a class action lawsuit. Let's hold their feet to the fire and make them at least more responsible for the content they publish and profit from!

In March of 2013, I booked a 3 1/2 star hotel at Hotwire.com in the Kissimmee area for 2 nights. This was a secret hotel until you purchase, something I had done hundreds of times with Hotwire, always with full satisfaction. The hotel turned out to be the Radisson Resort in Kissimmee. Upon our arrival, we noticed a long line to check in, no problems for us. I noticed that every check in station had on the counter a remote control on displayed. It was a Sleep Number bed remote control and a sign that said, "All of our rooms come with the Sleep Number bed."

We checked in and were told how to get to our Building. This property is huge and has several buildings like a huge hospital. We were placed in the 3000 building. Upon our arrival in the room, I noticed this was a mistake. This was a 1-star room. Not only was there no Sleep Number but the beds were hard as a rock. It had an old TV; we could not locate the remote control. After several minutes, I chose to call the front desk and requested to speak with the manager. I shared my concerns with the manager and to my shock, with no reservations or sugar coating, the manager told me that when you booked this hotel through Hotwire, you are placed in the 3000 building. If you booked directly with the hotel reservation system, in other words pay regular price, you get the main building where you enjoy the 3 1/2-star rooms with Sleep Number beds. He further told me that Hotwire is very aware of this practice.

After a horrible night in a bad bed, we went to the parks and left for the drive home one night earlier. I placed my complaint at TripAdvisor.com but they refused to post it. I always use Hotwire and will continue to do so because their prices can't be beat. I have booked 3 times after that with no problem; however, I will no longer book a 3 1/2 star secret hotel in Kissimmee for fear of getting this same hotel. I understand the relationship between Hotwire and TripAdvisor but shame for not posting my complaint. I don't know of anyone who would not feel ripped off if you pay for 3 1/2 stars and get a 1-star room and then have the manager flat out tell you that it is standard practice and furthermore, Hotwire is aware. TripAdvisor allows all kinds of good and bad complaints; however, they decided not to post my complaint because of their relation to Hotwire and for that I say shame on TripAdvisor. Thank you.

I was able to call the person directly trying to rent their place for 3 days over this summer. They said to go through TripAdvisor website since they were busy and couldn't talk. So I did. They never replied to my email. On their vacation description page, it said these days were available for $100 per night with a 3-night minimum. A day went by and no reply, so I sent my request in again. No reply. Meanwhile, they had raised their daily rate and minimum stay requirements.

What I am really not happy about is that there is no way to complain about this online because you had to have actually STAYED at the vacation home to write a review. This complaint is about TripAdvisor not looking out for your best interests when using the site because you can never hear negative things if the renter misrepresented themselves unless you stay there. I couldn't find another way of alerting fellow travelers to this owner and their sneaky way of handling clients, and could be sketchy in other areas as well.

I have sent Trip Advisor 3 emails asking why those 2 specific reviews are still pending. Because of the email used on the TripAdvisor, we could match it to our ex-employee and even though it clearly states, "No employee or person affiliated with the business is allowed to post a review", TripAdvisor has still allowed it to be posted. On another occasion, a review was posted complaining of our food in our restaurant but, the food they were complaining about we don't even serve in our restaurant. Again, TripAdvisor was informed of this but, failed to do anything about it and allowed the review to remain posted.

TripAdvisor's blatant disregard for following through with their policies and allowing false claims to remain posted hurt hardworking employees and businesses like ours. Someone needs to do something as I've found that TripAdvisor has an F rating on the Better Business Bureau and an Unsatisfactory rating on this Consumer Affairs website for all the same reasons I've stated on this complaint. I opened my own (very small) company just over a year ago and added us to TripAdvisor last year. I used to trust them, but since that time, I have come to discover they are very biased (despite their claims of being unbiased). So far, my company has 14 reviews, mostly positive (average and up). However, we have had 2 known false reviews (one terrible, the other average with a more negative tone than the rating given). Having transitioned from using their site to find places to eat at or visit, to being reviewed by people there, I have discovered that TA is overly eager and willing to remove any review reported as a false positive, but absolutely unwilling to remove false negative reviews.

They prefer the business to write a rebuttal (instead of actually reviewing it), nor do they appear to have any true way to determine if a person was a guest or even a potential guest as far as I can tell. As other reviews and even articles have pointed out, the owner of TA has even said, "Who gives a **," in regards to what he calls a "few" false negative reviews.

I strongly regret ever having submitted my business to be part of this review website. It is clear that their policies are in favor of hurting businesses instead of helping them. And their current policy of forcing a business to just respond (on eggshells, mind you) to any negative review, true or false, creates an image of the business "making excuses" over every negative claim. To add insult to injury, you cannot request your business be removed from their website once it has become part of it as far as I can tell. Yet it would appear they can ban the business owner's account if they make too many complaints about their process (we have not gotten banned yet, but seem to be "dangerously" close to getting the owner accounts banned so we would not even be able to respond). Beware using TA to have your business reviewed.

Trip Advisor now just panders to the businesses that are listed and does not care about the traveler's experience. I stayed at a river lodge on the Yarapa River off the Amazon River in Peru where I was exposed for days to a staff member who had Meningitis. The lodge did not care enough about this man's health or our safety (being exposed to an infectious disease) to give him prompt and separate transport to a hospital in Iquitos, Peru. This man shortly died of it after riding in the same car with us back to our hotel in Iquitos. I found out after the trip that the staff member had died. I contacted the owner of the lodge, an ophthalmologist from New York. He claimed the staff member had died of a previous head injury. That was absurd because the man was coughing continuously and was extremely weak.

When I wrote my review on Trip Advisor, I did not then know which diseased caused his death. I just knew that the staff member was sick. A fellow Trip Advisor reviewer contacted me as to the person's real cause of death. Because I had already written the review on Trip Advisor, I was not able to edit it and give the specific disease from which he died. I decided to add a picture with a caption that told of his real reason for dying. Trip Advisor kept it that way for a short time but because the owner of the lodge kept complaining. Trip Advisor caved in to him and took the photo off of its website. I was only telling the truth. Don't trust the reviews on Trip Advisor. There are many, many shill (false) reviews on it. If there are some really bad reviews about a particular hotel/lodge, recognize the majority of the really great reviews are fabricated.

I have had my fill of trip advisor. As a B&B that bought a business listing last year, I was totally dissatisfied. Because I became aware of the arbitrary and unfair way they post your listings, I no longer trust them as a source for my own travels (20 weeks a year). I have written a few reviews but have only done so when I felt very strongly both positive and negative. From a business standpoint, they are unwilling to list me in the town I am located but instead insist that they list me in a neighborhood. While the list makes me the only lodging in the neighborhood, it doesn't allow me to be listed with the other lodgings in my town. At the same time, there are hotels and inns in other neighborhoods that are listed in the town.

When I complained, they gave a boilerplate response that they want be as close to my actual location as possible. That would make sense except I am the only one in my town being excluded. Needless to say, I did not renew my business listing. It yielded little because it was listed improperly. I have also quit asking for reviews, thrown out the cards and taken down the signs. I have tried to appeal this decision but don't even get an email reply. The sales people are of no help at all and acknowledge that they will not be able to help. Don't waste your money on a business listing. Take the free one. They are of comparable value because of their policies.

From a personal standpoint, the fact that I now know what I know, I have no trust in what they say. If they get it wrong when the owner of the property shows them that they are wrong and their hubris, incompetence or stupidity keeps them from acknowledging their mistake, why would any of us believe anything they say? Further, the fact that they keep harassing posters to post more reviews is intrusive and inconsiderate. The fact that they rate their reviewers based on the number of reviews they post makes me very suspicious about the quality of the reviews. There are other sites to find reviews on. Also, the fact that TripAdvisor can no longer claim that their reviews are authentic in the UK leads one to believe that the same is true in the US.

It goes to advertisements and you cannot get out of them. They have these popups all over the page so you cannot see what you are trying to view. It is a shame as they used to be a good travel site. From now on, I am going to AAA where they still have class and do not flood you with their horrible, tacky popups.

TripAdvisor has poor customer service; pans to the businesses they are supposedly letting us review; and is frankly hypocritical. I used to write reviews of restaurants for TripAdvisor and they accepted all of my submissions until the last one. They were all written in the same critical style yet for some reason, they rejected my last submission. My submission was regarding a certain pub in Regina, Saskatchewan called the "Knotted Thistle." It was very critical regarding the food, service and atmosphere. While I was certainly blunt, I was not rude; unfair; insulting or unprofessional. In fact, my latest review was much more fair and diplomatic than my other reviews. However, for whatever reason (TripAdvisor did not have the professionalism even to give me any reason at all), they rejected my submission.

It is generally a tenet of customer service to explain why decisions affecting the relevant people have been made instead of sweeping the truth under a rug. Yet I am pretty sure I know what happened. I believe Travelodge (a powerful hotel chain that owns the Knotted Thistle lobbied, successfully as it turns out, to have my review blocked as it was deleted a mere day or so after it went online). Basically, I am implying that in certain cases, TripAdvisor will take several businesses' sides instead of being the supposedly neutral review site that it is. How anyone can take a review site seriously if it has obvious conflicts of interest is an important question to consider. Anyway, who thinks this is mere conspiracy should take a look at my review of the Knotted Thistle that is still on Urban Spoon.

I posted it there the same day as TripAdvisor. Right around the same time Travelodge successfully lobbied to have my review removed, they also made a dismissive response to my review on Urban Spoon as well (apparently, they do not have the power to bend Urban Spoon at least). Please note that they call my review insulting (where it is insulting, they do not say), but do not attempt to offer any rebuttal to my arguments. There are plenty of other controversies for TripAdvisor, including the vast amount of fake reviews which they do not seem capable or willing to fix. While surely TripAdvisor must home some good reviews and reviewers, there is simply no way of knowing who is reliable or which companies they even allow critical feedback about.

My advice would be to stick to the non-profit review sites, talk to people who have actually gone to whichever location you want to visit or simply take a chance going there yourself. Either way for me, TripAdvisor has gone from being a reliable site to being a good example of how corporate interests can easily manipulate supposedly neutral bodies of public opinion. Disgusting!

Also, the site bugs you to write a review of where you vacationed, etc. The thing is they expect you to lie about a place no matter how bad the service was or what it consists of. That's what a review is about, to tell others of your experience at the place of choice. This is laughable. Anyways, they sent me this email as shown: "Thank you for your review. I tried FlipKey because TripAdvisor has partnered with it. Neither TripAdvisor or FlipKey will allow me to post. Below is an email I sent to FlipKey after them telling me I could not write a review after I had paid $699 for 2 nights. I was to arrive during Hurricane Sandy, I canceled only after United canceled my flight and the governor called for "State of Emergency." The owner said it was my choice not to come. I paid through FlipKey, tried to reschedule with the owner who told me I'll have to pay full, pay again though her schedule is wide open with no rentals booked. Plus she explained after I paid in full that I was a guest and the doorman should not know otherwise. Total scam and FlipKey won't allow me to save others from this scam artist. Hard lesson to learn on my first FlipKey encounter.

So it's FlipKey's policy to allow owners to take money, but not allow for a review? It would seem that the review is not only for the property but also a review of the owner. As a single female, I rely on reviews that also refer to the owner. When I booked my flight, I did not realize it was marathon weekend, which is what limited me to this rental with only 1 review. It would seem FlipKey should consider adjusting their review policy. If an owner takes full payment and does not allow rescheduling when the governor declares a state of emergency and my only other option was to drive from Indiana, I think I should be allowed to write a review to the business practice of an owner.

Plus learning that they are renting on the side is another issue. I rented from VRBO once and the owner cancelled 3 days prior to my arrival when the building realized what she was doing. I learned then about owners who sublet illegally. What you are now telling me is that FlipKey is knowingly allowing someone to advertise an illegally sublet apartment, which puts future renters at risk. I have the email to prove this. I learned it after I paid the full amount so I had no option but to go along with it then. You are choosing to allow others to be scammed by this person. Is that really FlipKey's public policy?

Oh my...there you go! It filters damaging reviews by objective reviewers (as I consider my self). As you may have heard, they say to have privacy policies that they do not have a need to let us know which ones are, about deciding when a review stays or not posted. In my case, I didn't care about reviews for a while, or kind of forgot about them, but recently I started asking my guests to post a comment there. As many of them where doing it, I was able to see them appear and suddenly leave, few days to a week later. This happened 7 times in the last month, and twice in 2 cases (they reposted the review and it was taken again). I sent many mails to Trip advisor’s owner's support, and I always got a pre written mail, saying that the guests did not answer a confirmation mail, that basically they never received.

I mail them many times, until they stopped to write back. I even called the New Business Listings, where they offer to charge $40 per month to display contact info and another stuff, I explain them that even if they are the best way to get promoted, I was not going to give them money for this kind of support or attention, that I could not trust them since they would not tell me what was going on. I got the "policies speech" again, like somebody was reading it to me. I personally had it with this website, but travelers don't know about this scam, there should be a way to show to the public all the chain of lies they are working on. All of my reviews are and where excellent, I think that is what they do not like about it, they can't destroy as with horrible reviews and they can't get money from us, so we are not good for them.
