One agent working. One woman getting car at counter one ahead of me. 25 min. later finally at counter. Very slow checking in. Left counter. Went to airport lot to get car (end of lot). Car had a chip in window, small dent scratch, and some kind of goop on hood. No one in lot. Hiked back to counter where there was now a long line. Grabbed a man that had just been doing paperwork, not helping customers filled out form so I wouldn't be charged for these damages. So over 1 hour to get car.

Pick up location LAX, picked up car with pre-existing damage (lower front bumper)! OK, no problem I'm thinking this has been recorded already and went about my business for a week. When I brought the car back, the check in guy says the lower bumper is damaged and said "yes it was already there" and he says "ok just write on this form my comment" which was (Pre-existing damage) and signed the form and went to the airport.
Well about a week later I receive a call from thrifty Claim Center saying I owe $278.00 for damage repair. I explained the damage was already there and they said to check previous rentals and it will prove I didn't do this. They said to me there was no damage according to the prior rental and I said something is wrong here. So I requested a rental history for this vehicle only 3 or 4 back and if there is no damage history I will pay the amount they want. I feel this a very reasonable request that would satisfy both our doubts. This was denied and further investigating will and that's final. This is total BS.

I rented a car through Expedia. It was a reasonable price. I had the option to pay when I arrived at my destination. First the person at the counter at the Phoenix airport kept getting phone calls while he was helping me and kept telling the person on the phone "I have enough beer." He encouraged me to upgrade to a car with more power. I rented a mid-size car on Expedia and he talked me into a car with more power. He stated it was only seventy five dollars more and that I would need it for my trip to Prescott. I did not get any extra options except an extra driver. He told me the total was two hundred and eighty two dollars and had me initial a few places on the receipt. He also told me with the upgrade I would not have to pay to fill up the tank on return of the car.
When I returned the car I was greeted by what seemed to be a very disgruntled employee who was complaining about her co-workers. She scanned the car and stated our total would be 653 dollars. I was in shock since I had already paid when we got the car. The mileage was free. When I began to question her she stated I needed to "talk to the people upstairs." We went in the rental booth to try and talk to the employees and they stated they could not help us. We asked for a manager and we were told they were in a meeting and would be there all day.
In an attempt to figure out why our bill was so much we went upstairs to the rental counter. The employee there also told us the managers were in a meeting and could not be disturbed. When we insisted she went out a side door and into the airport area, all the time looking back to make sure we didn't see her. She walked around for a few minutes texting on her personal cell phone and then came back to tell us she couldn't find the manager. She gave us a card with the manager she said was in a meeting.
We immediately called the number and had to leave a message. He called back while we were on the plane and said he had not been at work that day and gave us another number to call. We left another message for the person we were told to call and she has never called back. I am going to escalate this with my credit card company. Buyer beware. This is a very deceitful company who does not care about the customer at all. I should have read the reviews before renting a car but had to make an emergency trip to Arizona and I assumed that since I booked through Expedia they would be safe.

On Saturday June 6, 2015 I had a reservation to pick up a car at the Killeen, TX airport with thrifty car rental. The pick up time was at 9 am. Since I work for an airline, we fly on stand by status. I contact the Thrifty office about the time I will be arriving at Killeen, TX (GRK). The office inform me that I will have until 6 pm. When I got to Killeen, TX at 4 pm they told me that my reservation was canceled. Nobody from the office inform them and they don't have cars available. I end paying for taxi since they won't even help to get another from the cars people were returning. BAD SERVICES.

HORRIBLE EXPERIENCE!!! My booking confirmation number is ** for June 6th 2015. I got a call on June 6th 2015 from the branch saying that they don't have a vehicle available for me. I booked the hotel and tickets for the venture which are non refundable after getting the confirmation for the car. How can they confirm a reservation if they don't have a vehicle available. Now, I am stuck coz of their overbooking or non availability and will be losing a lot of money. It is a big let off and an embarrassing situation for me in front of my friends and family who are supposed to accompany me tomorrow. I called the customer service department and was kept on hold for 1 hour by 5 reps and in the end they all said "they can't help." They call it a Customer Service Dept... Seriously!!! I am in a fix now as there is no other vehicle available as we are in a group of 6. Don't know where to get the help from. SHAME THRIFTY.

I rented a vehicle and was not informed that I would be charged a $15 service fee each time I used a toll road. I received a bill for 78.36, 3.36 of tools and $75 service charges. I was not informed that turning down a SunPass would result in these excessive charges for a toll. This is not clearly explained by the desk agent. Very deceptive way to overcharge customers. This should be illegal.

We rented a car from Thrifty in NYC for a month to travel around the east coast of America. The car we had needed to be swapped out halfway through the journey due to maintenance issues (slow tire leak, oil change issue, no window screen washing water). On our return to New Zealand we received a very large bill for toll charges that we had apparently incurred while we had the car. However, the tolls that were detailed on the bill were for dates and times that we were in completely different states (we had proof of this as well). We also had a GPS that we used that ensured we didn't travel on any toll roads.
We requested that they investigate this as it appeared fraudulent and we were told they were looking into it, that was until they actually took the money from our credit card and then immediately closed the investigation. We had to put a stop on the money with our credit card company and refuse to pay until we receive the proper proof of these charges. Our credit card company are investigating this. Please, if you rent from Thrifty, double, triple check any charges you receive once you get back. It seems very convenient to send international renters charges such as these, clearly with the thought that they would just pay and not query it. We will never rent with Thrifty again. For such a large organization, I believe they have some obviously dishonest systems in place.

Arrived at Las Vegas McCarren airport car rental terminal at the time planned on our online reservation made directly with Thrifty. We waited 50 minutes to be seen by an agent who found our reservation and the dollar amount was different than my confirmation amount. She had to type in the entire transaction which took another 15 minutes. We went to the pickup area and had to get in another line with easily 50 plus people ahead of us. We waited another 40 minutes to learn that they were out of cars and no one could tell us when they were expecting cars to arrive. At that point there were still 20 or so people ahead of us so we left and went to another agency. Customer service is not even a concept for this organization. Do not waste your time.

If I could give this place negative reviews, I would! I was traveling with my girlfriend to Chicago for a few days, and we parked her car with Thrifty. The night we arrived (last week), we put our luggage in the car and left. When we arrived home, we noticed a dent with scratches on the front right fender. The entire car is covered in thick dust, but the scratch has no dust on it; i.e., it is "fresh".
When we called to complain, we were told that since we have left the lot, they are not responsible. I would guess that this occurs pretty often, because his pitch sounded well-practiced. The clerk wouldn't even give us his name, and told us "that if we want to push the matter" to call his supervisor (**) who won't be in during the next 2 days.
Some side notes: She had some quarters in her front left compartment; those were gone when we picked it up. There is a ton of stuff in the trunk all of which was shuffled around, which points to a joyride. In summary, I urge you to AVOID this place.

Did a prepaid auto rental on the Thrifty website for Orlando Location. Prepaid rental agreement stated that I had a Nissan Altima Coupe which was listed in as a Standard Size rental car. These terms were stated in clear language on my rental agreement. When I checked in at the rental desk, they would not provide me with a Nissan Altima Coupe as stated on the prepaid rental agreement. The agent said that I would need to pay a 40 dollar upgrade to full size to get that car. He didn't care what my agreement stated in black and white. He also stated that my luggage would absolutely not fit in a standard size care.
I was very angry that the terms of my agreement were not honored when they were clearly stated. Since it was a prepay, I couldn't cancel it and walk away. I begrudgingly paid for an upgrade to get the car that I already thought that I had rented. Thrifty's website for Orlando still shows a Nissan Altima Coupe listed as a standard size car. Felling like I have been scammed!

We rented at Tampa Airport on April 18th and waited an hour and a half just to get to the counter..... Then the cars were not ready so had to wait another 20 mins. We went up to get our Midsize Car, which was a Mazda 3 and when we went to the lot it was a Mazda 2. We went back to the counter and the lady tried to tell me a Mazda 2 and 3 were the same. I explained we paid for a midsize car, and that is clearly not midsize. She then tried to give us another compact car.....
We ended up with a Altima which was great but returning the car was a complete nightmare. I have never experienced anything like this..... And after returning home from vacation we received a call from the Theft Department, saying to contact them because the car was not returned and legal action was being taken..... After clarifying that and getting the issue resolved, they sent us 30.00 in Thrifty Gift Certificates. I found that insulting for the trouble we had. I stated I would be happy with adjusting the gas we were charged and was told they couldn't because it was a valid charge..... NEVER again well we rent from them.....

I am extremely displeased with the service that I received at the Thrifty location at the Kansas City International Airport from Thursday, May 21 through Tuesday, May 26. Merely 20 miles after I left the airport, the check engine light of the car turned on, but then immediately turned off. I was slightly concerned, but as my trip was time sensitive, I continued my trip to the Lake of the Ozarks, MO. On Friday, the oil light in the car came on, and I then proceeded to take it to an O'Reilly Auto Parts store, where an assistant there informed me that there was no oil in the car. NO OIL! The person who helped me at O'Reilly was baffled. I purchased oil on my own dime to put in the car so that I would be able to safely return back to Kansas City.
When I took the car back late Friday night, the manager at the Thrifty store reprimanded me for putting oil in the car, saying I should have called the office and they would have sent someone to pick me up with a new car. Not only was the manager rude, she almost did not even reimburse me for the oil I put in the car, which was the mistake of the rental company for not having checked it, not my fault that there was no oil in the car!!! The manager begrudgingly gave me an upgrade and paid for the oil that I put in the car, but she would not give me any other refunds or discounts, which I think that I did deserve based on all of the trouble the original car caused me. Long story short, the service was terrible, the car was of poor quality, and I would never rent from Thrifty again, even if they did something else to make it right, such as offer me at least a partial refund. This company is low quality - I guess you get what you pay for.

Then, the car they gave us had cockroaches in it and they did nothing about it. Then we ended up with $15 toll fines for mystery tolls (no signs or toll booths) that we weren't warned about. It's their way to accept their daily toll coverage service. If you don't accept it you end up with these mystery tolls for $0.68 but because you didn't pay it they fine you upwards of $15 for each one.

In December 2014 vacationed in Nevada. Picked up Thrifty Rental drove it 23 miles from airport to my destination and it broke down. Called roadside assistance and after some back and forth they deemed it faulty and picked it up. They said I did not have to be present when they picked it up and I could continue with my vacation plans (I declined a replacement car because I was frustrated-made other arrangements). They called to confirm that the car was in the service's possession and I was all set.
Now move forward to May 15, 2015 and my card is blocked!! I look at my statement and Thrifty charged $3817.69. I didn't even have that available to take!! I called the Thrifty Cust. Serv. # and they stated that my reservation was just closed on May 13. Thrifty took possession of the vehicle December 6th and I'm certain I was on a recorded line. They continued to charge another $250 on the 18th. I closed the card. I called the company again and they stated that they were prevented taking the full amount Friday so that was left over... !!
If something was wrong with their records they should have contacted the customer a long time before this. Their customer service line is horrible. When I spoke with my bank they informed me that they tried to charge me 3800$ on the night I picked up my rental but it was blocked somehow so I never knew. Something was very wrong. My bank said that was a flag. I have rented cars many times and even my bank stated they may hold funds the night of pick up for what they anticipate collecting at the end of the reservation which in this case should have only been $250.
Their operation is bogus and disappointing. The bank that holds my card credited back my balance and are disputing back along with me. Thrifty told me "someone would get back to me in 7-14 days...that is ridiculous and I'm not holding my breath.. " Buyer Beware! What I learned from my bank was that Rental Car Companies, hotels and major restaurants can override any block or limit your bank may have and can charge whatever they want. They also can swipe in front of you one amount $ and then charge you another $$ amount. I have used this company before but I will never again. This was also a "prepaid" rental - I also paid the rental cost in full ahead so I may receive a discount rate. I will never pay in advance again. The competition may be pricier but may be worth using in the future.

We rented a car from Thrifty in Los Angeles. It was 50 mins before the shuttle came. Every other shuttle came around many times before ours came. Once at the rental car company, the clerk kept trying to sell us extra insurance that we did not need. Then we are told to go pick out the car. There was no one to tell us which cars we could take. It was like self serve out on the lot. Customers were trying to help other customers. Then we returned our car, 3 hours early. This time the shuttle was prompt taking us back to the airport. I noticed my credit card was charged more than my receipt. I called and they said I returned the car a day late. I flew out and wasn't even there anymore. They claimed they had no copy of my receipt. So I had to scan and email my receipt. So they did credit my card.
Then a couple days later I receive a bill because the car went through a toll, the day after I returned it. They too said I returned the car a day late. I had to send them a copy of my receipt. They then denied my claim. I had to call again and appeal, and this time they cancelled my bill. Now today just when I think all my bills are taken care of, I get another bill from the Metro Express lanes saying we were in the express lanes the day after our car was returned. Again more phone calls. And hopefully this is taken care of. Will never rent from them again.

On my last trip to Morocco (End of February 2015) I had a very unpleasant experience with Thrifty cars in Casablanca. By arrival I was surprised as I stood waiting for a while at a closed office. After a while I found out that all the papers and the finalizing of the rent had to be arranged in a car with an employee of Thrifty; it seems too expensive to rent an office in the airport.
I rented the car for one week; returned the car properly and signed off the "return papers" with an employee as he stated the car was ok. A week after arrival from Morocco I had a received a big surprise by checking my credit card account; a big amount of 650 Euro was debited by Thrifty!!! I contacted Thrifty and got the next explanation: the bumper was damaged (little bit burned); during the week of rental I had no problem with the car and it seemed that the burned bumper was caused due the bad exhaust system. I've sent pictures which shows that the bumper was already getting damaged/burning when I picked up the car by arrival in Casablanca. Even of all the proof (photos etc.) they only state that it is a strange story which they haven't face before!! However I have to pay for the damage even it is caused to a technical problem of the car.
Strange problem but they can't help and I have to pay for this strange damage... which after research on internet I found that it was a known problem of Dacia Logan mentioned on the forum, we have been in contact with them regarding the unfair treat but they are not willing to give any service or to admit that this damage is not the responsibility of the customer. As result one week of rental cost 147€ (cheap) + stealing 650€ (damage which has been caused due a technical problem/burned bumper). They really ruined my holiday and my budget of the whole year!! It's the WORST car rental experience for the last 10 year with Thrifty Casablanca Morocco. One advice: DO NOT RENT FROM Thrifty!!!

The gal behind the counter tells me "I'll put you in that Spark but if you want a trunk it's going to be roughly a $100.00 more." I had made my reservation a few weeks prior. I went back and the manager fixed it the next day. I also had an unfortunate mishap with the second car. I accidentally hit the median and the oil pan was damaged, I parked the car and called Thrifty to inform them. I explained the car can not be driven because of no oil. When the tow truck driver arrived we, my friend and I, let him know as well. He still started it and drove it up the ramp, instead of using the pulley. I am very concerned now of this. We rented a vehicle from Thrifty/Dollar in Cozumel Mexico W/O 4/28/2015. We were forced to pre-sign two (2) American express authorization charges before they would release the automobile. We did so grudgingly but did so anyway and at this writing would encourage no one to ever do that. We signed for the car which we had noted slight front end bumper damage which was noted on paperwork. We hardly drove the car during the week and can guarantee that we did not hit anything or in any way create any damage to the vehicle. We were on a dive trip and for the most part vehicle remained in hotel parking lot.
When we returned the car the Thieves at Thrifty told us we had created additional damage to the exact area which we had noted and listed at time of sign out. We refused to pay as we are certain we did not create any additional damage to the car and area they pointed out, once again was in the exact area we noted at time of sign out. However as mentioned above they had us sign an American Express Authorization charge open ended prior to them releasing the vehicle. I am not sure how they even came up with a figure to repair fraudulent damage claim of $116.00 but suspect that this is not the first time they pulled this stunt
In conclusion we have informed American Express of this situation and agreed to pay the car rental fee but under no circumstances will we pay the fraudulent $116.00 charge to these thieves. We have the paperwork of proof should they want to take us to an American court. In closing do not ever rent from Thrifty/Dollar in Cozumel and - never - never - pre-sign a credit card authorization.

Reserved a rental car online and received email confirmation of car and price. Upon arrival in San Juan PR, waited over two hours to be picked up by shuttle van to be taken to Thrifty lot (even though this was described in our reservation as being part of their service), we watched van after van drive right past us at the airport car rental stop, without a care. Upon finally arriving at Thrifty Car Rental (had to walk to another terminal to get on one of the shuttle vans, then force the driver to stop to pick up my wife three stops later). We waited yet another 2+ hours because they had NO CARS AVAILABLE, even though we had reserved and been confirmed a car to be available. When they finally provided us with the car reserved, the daily rental rate increased by $15 per day. When I asked, I was told "take it or leave it". I took the damn car, enjoyed PR for three days, then returned the car.
Had to go thru my bank card (BofA) to get the charges reversed, and use that as my way of telling Thrifty they suck. I made sure I wrote "DISPUTE" in large print when I returned my car, and the agent said I couldn't write that on the final charge slip. I said it's staying and there isn't anything he could do about it. After calling the third party vendor who manages the fines, they explained that the Miami area has a number of unmarked tolls and this is how I probably incurred the charges. Furious that this was NEVER explained to me at the rental car counter, I arranged to have someone on another island pay my credit card because I do not have access to a Scotia Bank on my island to even pay my credit card which is why I keep my balance at $0.00. To my surprise, I have just noticed that at the end of April I have been charged an additional $60.00 for Thrifty fines. This is absolutely ridiculous. My family and I have been renting from Thrifty all of my life and I will prefer to walk than do business with Thrifty again.
Since this, I have begun renting with Alamo who provides their customers with transponders that simply charge the amount of the toll to your credit card - $5.00 maximum while travelling the exact same areas on my business trip. The clerk offered half a dozen upsells - insurances, car upgrades, toll paying device, etc. She asked if I wanted to allow them to fill the tank when I returned. I asked what the cost of the gas would be and she gave me a reasonable price so I agreed. What she did not tell me was that they would charge me for a full tank of gas regardless of how full the tank was when I returned the car.
I had used less than 2 gallons from a fill-up, before returning the car and they charged me $46 for 17 gallons. When I called to try to get my money back, they said the car had only a half tank of gas and that the policy was in the rental agreement. The tank was above the F when I returned the car. I should have known better than to sign up for any extras. All I wanted was the car I ordered. Everything Thrifty did at checkout and checkin was designed to squeeze extra money out of me. Save yourself the hassles. Go somewhere else.

We booked a rental car to be picked up at the Jacksonville, Florida International airport. When we got there, Thrifty car rentals had the longest line. After waiting approx 30 minutes, people were being turned down even with a confirmation rental agreement. They were being told there were no cars available. There were many angry people in that line! Since we were on a fine timeline we didn't wait for "our turn" to be told we waited in line for nothing. Our only option at that point was to go to another rental company and pay top dollar for a larger vehicle than we needed because, although they had other vehicles available, those vehicles had been previously rented and that company actually chooses to honor their agreements with their customers.
We took the time and effort to secure a vehicle in advance so we would be worry free for that part of our trip. Unfortunately, it caused us more stress and much more money than if we just would have rented from another company from the start. How can you run out of vehicles for customers who have secured a rental agreement? Very bad business etiquette! I won't ever consider Thrifty again and I will be sure to pass my experience with them for everyone I know.

On March 3, 2015 I rented a car from Thrifty in Ft. Lauderdale FL with full intent to drop the car off in Orlando on March 13, 2015. Upon getting to the desk I was asked if I wanted a sun pass, my clear response was "I will just pay at the toll booths." What the clerk failed to tell me was that there was NO toll booths in the Miami area. Just pass by stations.
The minivans carpet was falling apart, it was dented up, & had paint all over it. It took an extra 25 min to get the manager to sign off on everything wrong with the car as he said "all the vans are like this, we don't charge for this type of damage." I would not take the van until everything was marked & signed off on. We had no issues with the vehicle, but when we dropped it off my daughter left her purse in the van. I became aware of this when we were ready to go through security at the Orlando Airport. I sprinted down to the van only to find it wasn't where I left it. Once I found my return agent I asked him to locate the purse in the van & he did. When I got it back, it was cleaned out! $97.00 stolen from a child!
Reluctantly I let all of that go... When I got back home to Minnesota I received a bill for my unpaid tolls. $8.74 in unpaid tolls & $105.00 in administration fees, $15/toll to be exact. I've paid the bill & have vowed to NEVER rent from Thrifty or their partners again as well as making sure everyone I talk to that may be renting a car in the future hears this story. Shame on you Thrifty for being deceitful & thieves. You've lost my business forever!

On reserving a vehicle with Thrifty, we received an estimated total of $382.91 with a GPS. We decided against the GPS and somehow our total became $422.61 without the GPS! We were pressured into buying a toll pass which we never used. When we balked at the overall price we were told that there was a shortage of cars and better take this one. We should have walked away, so I partially blame myself. Customer Service for Thrifty has failed to respond. I will never rent from this company again. I never leave bad reviews, but this company deserves this one. How about zero stars for them?

Wow. What an experience. I arrived at SFO airport on Saturday March 28th to pick up a rental car my buddy booked through Thrifty. Once he went to the counter they looked up his reservation and they took his debit card. He was told his debit card didn't have enough funds. He called his bank and they explained to prevent fraud any temporary charges over $150 would be declined. Fine, I offered to just put it on my credit card. His original agreement stated he could either bring the car back with a full tank of gas or pay and extra $40 and bring it back without filling it. Due to running short on time, we didn't fill the tank. We were quickly told it was $8.99 a gallon we'd be charged. I tried to argue, but trying to catch our flight back home it wasn't going to work. I scratched the extra $140 we were charged up as a loss and moved on. I should of read the agreement. But, that doesn't end.
Today I receive a letter stating I now owed them an extra $21 for going through a toll. $6 plus a $15 "administration" fee. Seriously? I clearly remembered being ASKED by the clerk if I was going through any bridges. I said yes, and he stated I could get a vehicle with a FastTrack built in. So folks, that's how you spend $500 to rent a Toyota Corolla for 5 days. Very unprofessional and misleading company. Nickel and diming you til the very end.

I called Thrifty the following day of my arrival to report the poor condition of the Dodge Avenger I rented. Highway posted speed was 70 MPH. At this speed the car shimmied and shook so bad I thought the wheels were going to fall off. The steering wheel was visibly shaking. The brakes squeal when used and you can hear the discs rubbing as you turn corners. I called the phone number to complain and also to have issues noted as I don't want them blaming me. I laughed out loud when the extension you need is also the roadside assistance. I told the person my issues and he said he would make note of them. I return the car in 3 days. I doubt there will be any compensation. I wish I had read the reviews first.

The gentleman (** was his name) put me on hold and called the Tulsa Airport location. He called for like 10-15 mins before he finally got someone on the phone. Once he got the Tulsa Customer service Agent on the phone, he transferred me to her (** is the name she gave me). She put me on hold in the middle of me speaking and I was on hold for 15 mins., when she came back to the phone I tried to tell her my issue and she stated that she had to put me back on hold (I was on hold for another 15 mins).
After being on hold for a little over 30 mins, I spoke with her and told her that my flight was going to be late. I provided her my name and flight information. She told me that it was a lot of planes that was delayed and she would be there. My flight arrived at 1:30 am, when I got to the rental area. The Thrifty area was dark and the sign was not light. I asked other rental car companies that was still open and waiting on their customers, where the Thrifty Rep was and they told me that she left for the night. So, now I'm stranded at the Airport in a city that I'm not familiar with and the other rental car companies did not have any available cars.
After being at the airport for about an hour and no cabs being available The Hertz Rental Car Rep. had ONE car left after all her customers was checked in. I had to pay triple the price of what my rate was with Thrifty. This was the WORST thing I have ever experienced with an rental car company. I was distraught and scared (being a single woman out in a strange city). I will NEVER use or recommend Thrifty to anyone.

We recently had one of the worst car rental experiences of our lives renting through Thrifty (and we rent vehicles a lot). Here is our story: We booked a midsize SUV from Jan 16 to Feb 17, 2015 (33 days) on Hotwire (way back in early October to ensure a vehicle of choice would be available) with an estimated price of $2007.01 (daily rate $26.71) inc taxes (there was no mention of a $250 drop-off fee in the quote). We arrived on Friday 16th January at Las Vegas International airport to be told there were no midsize SUVs available at the time and that we could come back on Monday to get one. Problem was we were driving to Utah on Sunday so needed a car there and then.
We were also told that the SUVs didn't have tires suitable for winter driving nor were we allowed to put chains on the vehicle. So in other words, an SUV would not be suitable to take into the snow (which was the entire reason for our travel). Every other company we have ever rented from in the USA has had winterised cars. We were offered a 4wd (Nissan Armada) as we were told this would be the only suitable car available for snow driving. This was supposedly offered at a discount rate. However, considering the final bill, I doubt we received any sort of discount.
Under duress we decided to take the 4wd as we felt we had no other option; plus we had been travelling 36 hours by this stage and couldn't leave our bags anywhere safe to try and discuss options as a couple with Thrifty staff. We were then told that we would have to renew the contract via telephone on day 30 as Thrifty only offers rentals up to 30 days. This was a surprise since we had reserved it for 33 days on Hotwire without any comment about this.
Come day 30 we rang the number provided and we were told that we could not renew this over the telephone and that we had to go into a Thrifty office to do so. We questioned this as we were told otherwise and after being deliberately and rudely hung up on several times, we drove (2 hour round trip) to Reno Airport to renew the contract. When we renewed the contract, they said the $250 drop-off fee would only be payable once even though it showed in both contracts. It is hard to decipher the exact charges. However, it appears that we have paid this fee twice.
The manager at the Reno office was very good in trying to manage our angst. She also said that all Thrifty cars have all weather tyres so driving in the snow in an SUV wouldn’t be an issue plus she said, “You can put chains on a Thrifty car. However, you are liable for any direct damage chains might incur” (which if we had have known way back at the beginning we probably would have delayed our travel by a day to get an SUV instead of this huge 4wd for the 2 of us).
This is important information to us as we run a ski travel website that gets 10,000 people a day researching their next ski trip and now we are totally adverse to promote Thrifty as a viable service for people wanting to travel to the snow (unless they rent an extremely expensive 4wd). This was a horrendous experience from start to finish and the final bill was US$4,368/AUD$5776 (well over double what we had anticipated and budgeted for). I have since tried to contact Thrifty several times via their "customer service" email but they do not reply. DO NOT USE THIS COMPANY; THEY ARE POISONOUS.

Upon collection of a fully prepaid vehicle from the Southampton branch, I was met with the most obstructive and unhelpful approach to service which I have suffered for quite some time! Apparently, Thrifty demand any number of identity checks when supplying a car. The most insidious demand is for a recent, hard copy, utility bill/credit card or bank statement. Who do these people think they are? It's easier to get a mortgage! Neither my passport or driver's licence were sufficient proof of identity or address!
After much unhelpfulness and insolence from the jobsworth, we overcame the problem by opening my personal bank account details on the Thrifty computer for the individual to peruse. I am absolutely certain that the vast majority of ordinary sensible people will be horrified to read of this level of intrusion to complete what, to the rest of the world, is a commonplace and simple procedure. If a passport, combined with a drivers licence and valid credit card are not sufficient proof of identity and location requirements by Thrifty, then long may they suffer without customers! They will most certainly never have the opportunity to insult me again!

I rented a car from Thrifty Car Rental on April 4, 2015, at the San Diego Airport location. The first car that was given me, was a Chevrolet Impala. After we drove the car away from the Thrifty lot, we noticed a big bulge on one of the tires. For safety sake, we immediately drove back to Thrifty and reported the bulge in the tire and we were given a Nissan Rogue instead. The Rogue was from Hertz, which is the next lot to Thrifty. The Rogue was not inspected by Hertz, nor was it inspected by Thrifty when offered to us.
On the 6th of April, we returned the Rogue and was written up for being responsible for the starburst. I am not responsible for this. My son, as well as myself, were authorized drivers of this car and would have known if a rock hit the windshield or not. There were no signs of any such thing happening. This starburst was there when delivered from Hertz. The Rogue was borrowed from Hertz and had not been inspected prior to giving us the car. The employee that rented us the car, had not inspected that car either.
I am not responsible for the starburst the windshield of the Nissan Vogue and I am disputing this allegation. I do not consent to any charges being made on my Visa to repair the starburst and don't even try. I request that any invoice be send to me directly, and do not think that you can charge it to my Visa. I have not given you consent to charge anything to my Visa.

To date, I am out close to $1000 and still waiting for a refund and any clarification on reconciling a breach of contract from Thrifty Car Rental. I booked a reservation weeks in advance for a Christmas eve trip and was told there were no more cars left from the SFO counter when I arrived. The stoic customer service rep told me not to fret, that the company had a glitch in the system and overbooked. She handed me a pre-printed letter that stated the company's apology that was digitally signed by their managing representative, **.
Their answer to manage their 'glitch'/failed booking system was to offer a refund to cover the difference for booking with another company the same day. My booking with Thrifty was a little over $200, booking on Christmas eve the day off from National cost me close to $1200. Because I did not want to cancel my trip to visit family I hadn't seen all year, I trusted their promise and booked with National and followed the instructions to receive a refund. Since that date, I have received a letter from a customer service rep, in early January, apologizing for the failed transaction and that I would receive a check within 20-30 days.
Now, it's early April, no check and cannot get a single person on the phone that can offer any answers. I've been told a couple times that I would receive a call from someone perhaps from their accounting dept. with clearer answers, and have not. I was also told that they had a 'failed' refund check system (yes, I agree!). But this is not the only fail with this company!
Does anyone else have a refund due from a breach in contract, not honoring a booking with a promise to refund the differences? At this point, I fear I will not see this money returned as promised by this company and their very ill informed service staff. I would rather be told that they were not paying the money, than to be sent into a black abyss of bad communication, lies, horrible management and essentially dishonest business practice. Please contact me or write if you are dealing with a similar situation. My next plan is to talk to colleagues with legal expertise.

At the Mexico City airport we went straight to the Dollar counter and after a long wait were picked up by the Dollar/Thrifty shuttle. Upon arrival at the rental place we were surprised to be renting from Thrifty but the employees told us Dollar and Thrifty were the same business. The car we received was dirty and beat up. It had scratches all over. We did a walk around with a Thrifty employee and took photos of all the marks on the car but there were literally too many to photograph. We had the car for 3 days but barely drove it. We got on the highway and drove to San Miguel where we parked in a safe secluded spot. We did were not responsible for any scratches or damages to the vehicle.
Upon our return of the vehicle, the Thrifty employees so thoroughly examined every scratch that after a 30 minute review they found a mark that was supposedly not there when the car was given to us. This mark was on the front bumper of the vehicle. This mark was most certainly there upon our rental and we were DEFINITELY not responsible for it. The mark itself was negligible especially when juxtaposed to the many scratches that the vehicle already had all over. Despite our protests we were told that the car would be examined and we would be charged. Everyone else we saw returning their car to this rental spot was in the same predicament - odd damages were attributed to their rental even though they were not responsible for them.
Ten days later, my card was charged an extra $474.98. THIS IS SIMPLY UNACCEPTABLE. I was told I would be notified about the outcome of the valuation but was never contacted even though I left my email and contact info. It brings shame to the company, the workers and most unfortunately the country which visitors expecting hospitality will avoid to forgo experiences such as the one I describe above.

Very disappointed. Planned one-way rental of premium class from New Orleans MSY to Nashville BNA. Received Ford Taurus (premium class) at MSY, found it had broken rear-view mirror which caused me motion sickness while driving. Brought it back to the original location for exchange and there were no cars in the same class available so I was given a Dodge Charger (full size class) which is not what I paid for. The employees assisting me at that time said they couldn't do anything other than that, nor could they adjust my rate or find me a new car in the class I was paying for.
Since we had to keep going on our trip, we drove the Dodge Charger to our next city (Birmingham, AL) only to find that the power outlets (for charging phone/GPS) did not work. When I called Thrifty again from Birmingham I was told there were no cars even in the full size class that they could exchange for me anywhere nearby. I was told to try calling again to see if there would be cars available, which I did, and there was still nothing. Since we would be ending our trip in Nashville, the Thrifty person on the phone told me they couldn't do anything else and that I should just return the car as scheduled and speak to the manager there about getting a refund since I was driving a car in a class that I didn't pay for.
When I got to the return area in Nashville I was told the manager wasn't available and that no one there could help me and that I should call the corporate office. When I called the corporate office today to discuss this with someone I was told they could refund 2 days of my rental at $26.99/day. This seems wholly arbitrary and like an inadequate response to having to drive a not-completely-functioning downgraded car the entire week. This whole experience was very disappointing, mostly for the lack of responsibility anyone felt for my situation and everyone just kept "passing the buck." Rest assured I will not be using Thrifty or Dollar ever again.

When I arrived the associate told me they had my rental reservation but because of the snow they would upgrade me and save me some money by offering me a AWD vehicle for $98 for the 5 days, I agreed, why not, save some money and get a better vehicle? He hurried through the process by reading off what I agreed to on his screen that I could not see and initial a signature pad with no information on the pad, just a pad that claims agree or decline and initial. Nothing on the pad to tell me what I was signing for, just the information he was reading off his screen. When I went out to the lot to pick my vehicle, all they had out there were the upgraded vehicles, they didn't have the economy vehicles out there that I had a reservation for.
Once I returned the vehicle and checked it in, the attendant told me that I got a good deal. I looked at my receipt and told him I was overcharged but he told me a deposit of $500 was charged and I would see a credit. This piece tells me everyone is involved in the scam. Once I got back home I looked at my cc statement and I was charged $700. I called Thrifty and told them the problem and they were unwilling to listen to my complaint and repeatedly told me I signed for it and there was nothing I could do. Also told me if I was looking for any type of refund it was not going to happen. My fault for not insisting that I look at the same screen as the attendant when I rented the vehicle, however the integrity of this business is to manipulate the client to believing one thing but proceed in charging something completely different.
In all they charged me for fuel when I brought it back full, $98 a day, and insurance when I agreed to none of that. If this happened to me, I'm convinced this is a normal daily business practice that is conducted to every customer. I refuse to stand by and be ripped off and will rather fight my case to ensure proper business ethics for the consumer. Why would anyone agree to pay an extra $80 a day for a rental car for no reason. Avoid Thrifty Rental Car at Denver Airport.

I went to the rental desk only to find a sign that stated they were closed and that I had to go to the opposite side of the airport to the "car rental return" area to pick up my car. It was late, I was exhausted. While completing the rental process I was informed by the rental agent that Florida now has a toll system on several of the highways. I was informed that the charge for the "Plate Pass" was $8.95 per day. I was told that if I declined the "Plate Pass", and I used the toll road that I would be charged not only the toll fee, but a $15.00 charge for each toll that was not paid.
I questioned the rental agent about paying cash for the tolls and was told that there were no "cash lanes or manned toll booths on any of the toll roads". So, since I did not know what highways were charging tolls and knew that I would be travelling to different locations, I opted to pay the additional charge for the "Plate Pass". I WAS LIED TO BY THE RENTAL AGENT - there were in fact cash lanes and manned toll booths on the highways. So, the $3.50 should have paid in tolls cost me $51.16. We reserved a small, 4 door car for our trip to Las Vegas. On arrival we were told that they can only give us a tiny Fiat 500 which is a two door car with no luggage space. Despite showing them the details of our booking, the lady behind the counter insisted that "cars always look different on the website" - even though the booking clearly said a 4 door car suitable for 4 passengers (there was only the two of us but that's beside the point).
Well the Fiat 500 can barely fit one normal sized person, let alone 4. Furthermore, once she found out that we were getting married, she tried to push an "amazing deal" - an upgrade to a convertible for $100 A DAY!!! We asked to speak to the manager who was talking pretty much along the same lines and even told that if we cancelled there is no guarantee we would get our money back. Eventually we ended up forking out extra $90 for a bigger car as they did not have anything even remotely similar to what we booked. We also enquired about getting a satnav which would have been only about $50 if booked through the website; they attempted to charge us $140 so we declined and decided to use navigation on our phones instead. Overall it has been an appalling service and I would never use the company again. It might seem like an amazing deal to start with but they will rip you off, have no doubts about.

I rented a car through Thrifty in Sept 2014 while in LA for work. During my time, I ran a red light and a traffic cam caught the incidence. As a result, the City of Santa Monica sent a violation to Thrifty in Dec 2014. Thrifty claims that they never received the violation in December, and so the City of Santa Monica nearly doubled the fine and re-issued the statement in March 2015. Thrifty then paid the total violation ($815 for running a red light including the late fee - first offense, clean record otherwise) and because of the rental agreement, I am obligated to pay the fine.
When I asked why they did not contest the late charges when they received the notification in March, they had no response - indicating that they could care less about this because they knew I had to pay no matter what. At this point, it is the City of Santa Monica's word against Thrifty, and the city is claiming they have on record that the violation went out. Please do not make the same mistake I did - Thrifty has no loyalty to their customers and I will NEVER use this company again. Do NOT trust this company - they do not care about your business. I didn't know that smokers were not allowed to rent a car just because they smoke? I would know if I smoked or not. I don't smoke in my house or in my car so I obviously would not smoke in the rental car.
She charged me over $200 to have the car CLEANED of cigarettes. First of all, the car was dirty from the beginning and I didn't even complain about that. Second of all, I didn't smoke in the car so there were no cigarettes to clean. And thirdly, I paid for a JEEP GRAND CHEROKEE and got to choose between a NISSAN ROGUE and a KIA SORENTO. I thought the car was supposed to be upgraded, not downgraded. I will never rent with this company ever again. Huge mistake. Save yourself time and money by renting with a PROFESSIONAL company.

Desk clerk was very forceful and persistent in selling various insurance plans and completed annoyed and almost angry when we refused all coverage. I park at Thrifty all the time and have been a corporate perks member for more than 10 years. On several occasions it seemed that I would drop off my car with a full tank but when I picked it back up I would have way less gas. One time I was almost empty. I started to try and keep track of the mileage when I drop it off and pick it up to see what could possibly be going on. It seemed weird but I didn't know if my car would just be kept running or people were driving it. I could not put my finger on it.
I parked on Tuesday, March 17th and recorded my mileage just as usual and verified with the attendant the mileage number. He wrote the number on the form but I did not see exactly what he wrote. But I do have a copy of it now and see what he wrote and it was what I very close to what I noted. I returned last night, March 19th and when I got in my car my mileage was 85 miles higher than when they parked my car. It is 2 miles from the airport??? How could this happen? I have photo proof of what I am stating and the manager on duty even said so much but refused to help or address the situation in any way. She was very rude and not helpful in any way.
They refused to give me contact information for the person who runs the lot or the next people in charge. She said too bad. I would like to talk to someone about the situation. I have contacted our corporate office to let them know about the experience. I would like to talk to the management of the Columbus facility as this should not happen.

On February 23, 15, I made a car rental reservation on Thrifty.com for a one-day rental on February 24, 15. The grand total of my reservation online stated $52.45. As a Thrifty Blue Chip Member, it's customary that reservation documents be prepared, printed and waiting for the customer in order to expedite picking up the vehicle. However, this franchise had nothing prepared making it necessary for me to stand in TWO lines. One to wait while they slowly entered my information and another line outside in the cold to retrieve the keys. I have made dozens of reservations utilizing Thrifty.com and the estimates have been accurate (within a few cents) 100 percent of the time. However, upon returning the vehicle the next morning, I noticed this Thrifty franchise had overcharged my card by $17.74.
I mentioned this to ** behind the counter and she gave me a phone number of a manager named **. I did ask ** to please call ** and explain the issue and to please correct the charges. As of this date, the matter has been ignored. I have attempted to call ** on several occasions using the number ** gave me (**). However, that line just rings without a voice mail recording to allow a customer to leave a message. On March 15th, I called the phone number on my contract and spoke to ** asking her to relay my message to the manager and as yet I have had no response.
Never having encountered this issue prior to this with any of my reservations at Thrifty.Com, I feel it is representative of fraudulent business activities by this one franchise and its manager **. All franchises need to honor the prices they advertise. While $17.74 is not extravagant, this highlights a larger problem of greed, unethical business practices and a lack of customer appreciation.

I rented a car through Hotwire. Upon arriving in Sarasota there was one agent for a long line of customers. Said car was in terminal but it was not. They did not have the car I reserved and tried to talk me into a smaller car. After over an hour someone turned in a suitable car and we took without having it serviced or cleaned. It was a piece of junk. We limped through our rental period.
After returning home, we got a bill for almost double the quoted price. They claimed we had not turned in the car on time and had kept it for four extra days. Amazing since we flew out on the last day of the contract. In addition charged us for tolls not paid with an administrative charge of $105. We were in SW Florida and all the tolls were in the Miami area. They say the burden of proof is on us. Fortunately we have hotel, airline, parking, restaurant, and shopping receipts that show we were always on the west coast. Have spent hours trying to correct problems. Nasty customer service reps. Horrible company. Will never use again!!!

Great guy came right out and jumped the "old corroded" battery - complained when I turned in the car and the desk lady gave me a "free day rental" of 30.00. Oh, Thrifty charged me $78.95 by the way. Said I would have to take it up with customer service. So I called and now customer service tells me it needed to be resolved at the counter when I turned in the car. Flew into Tampa, FL and rented from Thrifty. When signing the contract be aware! You can choose to fill your tank on day of return or let them do it for you at around $.50 more per gallon... we chose to fill the tank ourselves just before drop off. What we didn't know was this... if you commit to filling yourself then that offer they give you for them to fill it at $.50 higher becomes void. There were no gas station exits on our way back to Tampa airport within 10 miles of the airport so when we arrived, they charged me $10.00 per gallon. I used three-fourths of a tank in a little Chevy Sonic... guess what? It cost me $89.01 in fuel! I thought there was a huge mistake so I called when I reached my home and the rep from Thrifty said it was in my contract. Made reservations for a full size car for one week and a mid-sized car for two weeks of a three week period in Kona Hawaii due to specific space needs. Returned the first vehicle after week one and went to pick up the second reserved vehicle for the two weeks. I received an email confirmation of the second reservation 24 hours prior which is the normal service for reservations. I am a preferred Blue Chip member and my name was on the pickup board behind the counter. The agent at the counter advised that the reservation number had been cancelled. I advised that I did not cancel the reservation and I would appreciate them honoring my reservation confirmation that I presented to them. I was told that they could not help me and that a vehicle was available for close to $200 US per day. The agent was rude and did not care about the problem. My reservation was $420 for two weeks for a mid-sized car!!
I presented my perspective and the confirmation email, which did not appear to matter. I took the $200 per day vehicle as it was 10:20 PM on a Friday and the location closed at 10:30 PM. A taxi was not possible as we were staying an hour away from the airport. Customer service for Thrifty only is available Monday -Friday, however I called Thrifty reservations the next morning and after three people who could not help me, a Supervisor researched my Reservation # and confirmed that it was provided to me and for another unrelated reservation. She provided me with the name of the individual, who had cancelled the reservation # Friday afternoon before my pickup time. Thinking that since Thrifty acknowledged the error as being internal on their part, they would take corrective action, but that did not occur as I was told to contact Customer Service on Monday.
I had recorded the names/employee numbers of all the Thrifty staff I had spoken with. Monday morning I called the Thrifty customer service line and began explaining the issue that took me through 3 more individuals who said the reservation was cancelled and they could not do anything. I asked for a Sr. Representative, who I again explained everything to and who accessed the notes from my prior discussions with their staff. She agreed with the error and acknowledged that she was the 8th Thrifty representative I had been through already but followed the same response of the reservation was cancelled and she nor anyone would reinstate my reservation and original price. She did offer me a vehicle at 5 times what my reservation was confirmed at. I declined.
This undeniably was the worst experience I have ever encountered. I felt that I was being forced to accept a ridiculous rate for an issue that was created within their booking system. They acknowledged the issues as a double booking generated from their system, but no one would rectify the error. I was a high use business customer with Thrifty but I will NEVER rent or do business with Thrifty again. Be aware that Thrifty's customer service is only in name as their actions do not provide any service whatsoever. Repeating my problem with 8 Thrifty representatives, over four hours on the phone during my holidays, created substantial stress and a family holiday.
Thrifty had complete disregard for the problem created by their reservation system. I have already cancelled my next few business reservations with Thrifty as I have moved to another car rental company who actually values their customers and even if they only provide a small level of customer service, it will be more than what I received from Thrifty. NEVER EVER RENT FROM THRIFTY.

I have rented cars all over the world but have never had an experience like the one I am currently going through with Thrifty. My husband and I traveled to LAX on our way to both Phoenix and then San Francisco on a business trip in September 2014. I rented a car from Thrifty at LAX and for the first time in my life no one came out to check out the car. I was told just go to this lane outside and pick from the cars that are there. Two cars were there and one had scratches and dents in it so we selected the other one.
On September 8 we headed to Phoenix returning to LA on the 11th. We were on the two lane fast moving highway from Phoenix to Los Angeles when our right front tire suddenly blew out all the way down to the metal. It was 114 degrees and there we were on the narrow shoulder with my husband changing the tire to a donut as fast moving 18 wheelers sped by shaking our car and our nerves.
I phoned Thrifty Road Service and was told that we had not gotten the special Road Worthy Insurance so if the tire blew because it was faulty Thrifty would pay for the tire otherwise we would have to pay. They sent us to a tire company in Indio. There the tire was deemed to be FAULTY and Thrifty gave them their credit card and paid for the tire. I missed appointments and my nerves were shot. I called them again and asked about exchanging the car for another since we had to go to San Francisco still. They said the tire is new so keep that car. When we returned the car I told the counter agent what had happened expecting that Thrifty would realize the danger that they had put us in and credit our car rental for the $300 some dollars but all the agent could do was a 10% credit and he told me to contact Thrifty corporate which I did.
I also contacted American Express and disputed the billing saying that they were lucky we were not killed. They sent out a car that was anything but Road Worthy. It was not properly checked in and I should have contacted a lawyer. I didn't. Thus began a nearly 6 month battle with Thrifty during which they have continued to change their story about what happened. First they claimed that I paid for the tire and that if it had been faulty that would not have happened. First untruth. That story continued for months until I sent Amex the credit card receipt from the Tire Company showing Thrifty as the Customer. They paid the bill. Now they are disputing my request with yet another story, stating that I should have seen that the tire pressure was low at the airport and complained about it then. Now the story is that I had the tire REPAIRED. Again... untrue. I am not giving up on this.
What they should have done was to have credited the $308.22 for my bill and given me some sort of credit for a future rental just as good customer service and for good will. Now they have lost a business customer... and I am so sick of Thrifty that I would never refer them to anyone no matter the price. What I want them to do is tell the truth and stop making up stories. They paid for the faulty tire not me... and they have put my husband and I through an unbelievable nightmare. We could have been badly injured or killed when that right front tire BLEW OUT. I would never rent a car from this company again.

I was mostly on hold but talked to four people, one of whom told me to drive back to Albuquerque from Santa Fe where we are so saying to have the additional driver fee taken off, they could nothing. All transferred me back to the main menu to hold and try to get to a customer service person who could help. There were no email addresses listed for customers. We returned the car and told the agent why. He said it was the law here to pay for the additional driver.
We ended up paying $88 for less than 24 hours for a Mazda 2 that shimmied and pulled to the right. This was the worst rental car experience I have had in memory and I travel a lot. Starts with the Thrifty agent at Ft Myers airport. I'd made a reservation via RentalCars.com and the Thrifty agent tells us the reserved car isn't available, puts us in another car which we assumed to be equivalent, and proceeds to tell us that despite the fact that Thrifty accepts reservations from RentalCars they will tell customers anything they want to hear. We later find that this results in a daily rental fee that is almost 100% higher than the quoted cost. Next regarding the offered Thrifty insurance, my wife and I declined and responded that our personal car insurance covers rental cars. Nevertheless he proceeds to charge a $28/day Loss Damage Waiver.
Next comes the car. It had +40,000 miles on it, huge by rental car standards. And when we were roughly 40 miles away (toward our destination at a conference in Naples), a terrible smell comes in the car, as if someone had thrown up in it. And there was an empty Coke can in the back seat that had evidently exploded, as sticky fizz was on various parts of the front seats and head liner. I called Thrifty about getting an exchange car, and they refused to either do an exchange at the nearby Naples airport (where they also have a counter) or bring a replacement car to us. Attending the conference, we had no time to travel back to Ft Myers airport to exchange. Bottom line is a quoted rental reservation of $261 ended in a Thrifty charge of $702 (car was returned with a full tank). Contacting Thrifty in Ft Myers, they were unwilling to make any accommodation.

Well they wouldn't talk to me, they had to talk to the primary driver. Ok so she called and switched it for her. They charged her almost 200 dollars for the change. I went on the thrifty website and looked at booking a car in Tulsa and returning it on Kansas city and for the same length of time and the entire rental was only 205 with tax. Had she returned the car and just gotten a new car with the intent on returning it in Kansas it would have saved her the 200 dollar fee.
They took advantage of a grieving woman that wasn't thinking straight and just wanted to get off the phone and get back to her family. We called immediately, and they said they would check the car. When we arrived in Chicago, I received a call from Thrifty stating that they had found the phone. We thanked them and asked them to FedEx it to our home in Ohio and charge it to our credit card. (Our flight was leaving for Ohio).
When we arrived home, we called constantly but were told we needed to put in an official claim and wait until it showed up on the lost and found sheet. That was a bad enough waste of time for something we needed immediately, but then we never received a reference number and never saw any cellphone on the list for 5 days. Long story short, it is a month later and no one can ever be reached in person. We have been hung up on repeatedly, transferred to numbers that never answer, and others that put you on hold forever. Today, a month later, I received a call while in the shower and made the mistake of answering. It was a recording that they had the phone and spouted some reference number. Of course, they hung up before I could get to a pen.

Day comes, it had been stressful and we finally arrive exhausted at our destination New Orleans! After a long wait and hoping we were in the right line, it was not clear if Thrifty had an agent, the Dollar agent helped us. When going over the details he saw that we had an American Express card and told us that the card covered insurance so we didn't need it. Okay. There was an extra driver charge so we paid it for both of us to drive, a little annoyed but okay. My original bill when I booked was $100. Now with adding my husband it was almost $300.
I was so tired from waiting and the long trip I thought I will address this later. We had added that they fill up the tank for us so I thought maybe just an extra large tank of gas just in case. Then we went to find our car. There was only one. "You got the last of our midsize" the lady said. Really no choice? Nope that is it. Annoyed cause we were told there were several to choose from.
When we returned the car we were super late for our plane. They gave us a receipt and we ran off to make our plane. I noticed that the charge was still the same but freaking out to make our plane I decided to deal with it later. Bad move! I saw the explained details they had charged us for insurance $100 when the agent said we didn't need any cause our card covered it. I called customer service and they said well we will let the place know so that it wouldn't happen in the future. Great but what about the insurance that I was wrongfully charged. "Sorry we won't refund your money." After going back and forth, she offered some vouchers for some money off next time. There will not be a next time since I won't be getting back my money. We returned the vehicle on December 13th, arriving two hours early for our flight, scheduled to depart at 4:30 p.m. Our flight was eventually cancelled. After driving around the parking lot a few times, I was met by a representative from thrifty. I told him I was attempting to return the car but couldn’t find a parking space. The rep. then checked out the vehicle and after finding no damage or anything else, took possession of the vehicle and instructed me to go to the counter. I then went to the counter and finalized my paper work.
On the 15th of December, 2014, my wife found a charge of $150.00 to Thrifty car rental. I called and spoke to the manager, Kavon. When asked about the charge, he said it was added after discovering cigarette ash between the seats, thus saying I had smoked in the vehicle. I assured him that neither my wife nor I smoke, nor had anyone smoked in the vehicle while it was in my possession. Kavon said he would speak to his boss and see if the charge could be dropped. After two more attempts on getting the charge dropped with no satisfaction, I called my credit card company.
A representative from my credit card company called Thrifty car rental in Hilton Head Island and spoke to Kavon on a three-way call. The credit card rep. said that perhaps a mistake had been made in this case, as the card holder, Mr. ** , does not smoke. Kavon then told the rep. that when Mr. ** got out of the vehicle for the inspection, he smelled like cigarette smoke. The rep. asked Kavon why the cigarette ash was not found at the time of the inspection. Kavon then said Mr. ** threw the key at me because he was going to miss his flight and ran off.
This was a fabrication by Kavon of the events that took place on that day. #1, after attempting to find a parking space and being unsuccessful, I was met by a Thrifty rep. in the parking lot. I advised him I was attempting to return the vehicle, but couldn’t find a parking space. That was when he inspected the inside and outside of the vehicle and took possession of it, along with the keys. #2, I was two hours early for my flight which was eventually cancelled. This gave Kavon sufficient time to properly inspect the vehicle and notify me with any problem. It appears to me Kavon was attempting to cover for himself for reasons unknown and using me as a scapegoat.
My credit card rep. was successfully able to have the charge overturned however, the fact you have an employee who blatantly lied for reasons unknown and threatened me that I will never be able to rent another Thrifty car, is very disturbing. I have on and off been a customer of Thrifty car rental and have never before experienced such a disturbing event.

We rented a van on January 2nd at the airport in Cancun (reservation **). When returning the van they said that there was a damage at the wheel rim. When observing it very carefully, you could see a very small indentation on the rim (about 1mm in diameter). A damage like this could only be caused by almost destructing the whole wheel, so it was obvious that the damage was already there because the wheel was otherwise perfect. They charged us 400 dollars for that damage which is clear that was already there when renting the car (invisible to the naked eye unless you knew it was there and you are an expert in rims). We took pictures of that alleged damage. I am enclosing a photo.

I rented a car @ Thrifty Car Rental @ Southwest Florida International Airport. I was very satisfied with the rate I found online for a standard sized car, and the fact that it was on grounds at the airport. The agent who rented me the car led me to believe that in order to get the great rate I found, I would have to purchase the "full tank" option, and told me that the price per gallon I paid them would be the same rate I would find outside the airport. WRONG!!! There was a gas station within a mile of the airport charging at least 5 cents less a gallon. I paid for a full tank of gas, and returned it with 3-4 gallons left, which meant I lost that money. (I am also sure, in retrospect, that she pressured me into getting the "full tank" option under false pretenses, and that if I would have returned the car with a full tank, I would have paid the quoted price.) I got to chose the car, and was satisfied with the car I got.
After driving 40 minutes from the airport to where we were staying, it was discovered the car was leaking oil. I contacted the 800 number on my agreement, and she informed me that I could exchange the car for another, but that I would have to DRIVE to the nearest Thrifty site to exchange it. I asked if they could just drive my replacement car to my location, and take the other one back. She said their employees are not authorized to drive their cars. REALLY???!! So I had to take time out of MY vacation, to drive to exchange the car. They did replace it with a nice car, but I feel that it was their responsibility to get a car to me, since it was THEIR error in giving me a car that was not running properly. In conclusion, I was satisfied with the car I rented, satisfied with the rate I found online, but very dissatisfied with being misled on purchasing the full tank option, and dissatisfied with the way in which they replaced a defective car.

BEWARE - Upgrade Charge at Denver Airport location: The SUV I booked online at $798 was too small. The representative said they had a cancellation for a Yukon and would check with manager on what they could charge. He came back and said $1225. He then breezed me through the electronic signature kiosk telling me to just check each page and sign. He then printed my reservation, tucked it into the folder, and walked me to our car. Turns out he billed me $1225 as an upgrade fee for a total charge of $2500!!! My fault for not catching it? Yes. Amazingly, Thrifty is holding ground and not making ANY adjustment for being misled. That is just WRONG. If you rent from this company, be positive to go over every detail BEFORE they breeze you through the electronic signature.

I rented with Thrifty because I needed a week plus 1 day rental and they offered what I thought was a good rate, and I would get mileage credit. I had never rented with them before but because we were trying to keep expenses down for the show I was producing, I thought I should give it a try. I called ahead to re-confirm their policy re: debit cards and was told they accepted them and that the hold deposit fee was half of the cost of the rental. I said "no problem."
First problem - I went to pick up the car and the employee at the desk was incredibly rude when he took my debit card, demanded a copy of my itinerary, would not accept the electronic confirmation I could show him, and said the hold fee was double what I was quoted. He sent me to the baggage area where I waited in line with people who had lost luggage only to get to the counter and be told they did not print out itineraries, I had to go upstairs to tickets. Then he tried to talk me to into some kind of 'fuel' deal but I was already suspicious and would not take anything he offered.
Second and much worse problem: I return the car and the week plus one day charge I thought was $249.19 turned into $472.20! I had no amenities, no upgrades, no GPS, used my own insurance, just car rental and tax. Barely put any miles on it, and only used half a tank of gas which I had replaced already. When I asked the employee who ran the receipt, he claimed he could not answer my questions about the overcharges, because he just did receipts, not the contract.
I went inside and the employee at the desk told me these were airport fees 'out of their control' in Austin, that totaled $135.49, and charges of their own that were billed as 'extras' for another $87.50 - when I had NO extras. I asked for a manager and of course there wasn't one. I couldn't get through to anyone on the phone, you get an answering machine and are told to leave a message. I tried repeatedly the next day, calling the main toll free number and they kept sending me back to the counter at the airport, where no one answered. I have called my bank to file a dispute claim. I have researched complaints about Austin Airport fee gouging, and cannot find anything. However I have found pages of Thrifty/Dollar company complaints. There is no way I should be charged any kind of tax/fees that equal the actual cost of the rental making it double. NEVER EVER use this company!

Booked a reservation for a surprise me car rate of $18.81 at Thrifty BWI airport location. This is the economy car rate also quoted at the time I made the reservation. Upon arrival on 12/26/14, no surprise, economy was what they had for me but I could upgrade to a midsize for $26.00 per day. Knowing that was the approximate advertised going rate for a midsize, I took the upgrade. In a matter of seconds they had document after document for me to sign and then sent me on my way.
Upon returning the car on 12/30/14 I noticed the bill was too high, but caught my flight home and then called Thrifty. Customer service at their 1-800 number, looked at my reservation and told me the $26.00 was in addition to the $18.81 as an upgrade fee. I explained to her that was not what the counter person at BWI told me and that if she looked at their own advertisements she would see $26.00 is the going rate for a midsize and for $44.81 a day, I could have rented an suv. She refused to pass my call on stating they don't escalate calls and would not let me talk to anyone else. After a extended back and forth on how I felt deceived and cheated, she hung up on me. I have disputed the charge with my credit card company and exchanged emails with Thrifty and they have made no attempt to address this bait and switch criminal tactic.

I was traveling with my 2 daughters to New Jersey & Pa Jan 3, 2015. This travel time they were having bad weather. The first car I was given at Thrifty Newark airport, but did not realize until an hour into our drive when it rained. The windshield wipers were not working properly & this made it difficult to see out of the windows. I phoned Thrifty roadside assistance & they told me I could exchange car at The Thrifty Allentown Pa. The roadside assistance operator told me to be sure to check vehicle before leaving Allentown location.
I expected that the cars that I rented would be inspected & well maintained, especially when the car I was driving had close to 60 thousand miles. I was expected at a family dinner & this stop to take care of a car that was not safely maintained caused me to be another 2 hours late. The Staff was not very helpful & they were rude. On my way back to the Newark airport on Jan 7 to catch my flight, the I realized the windshield wipers were both very good & the wiper wash was out. I attempted to put fluid in but line was frozen due to car being left with no fluid in it when we received the car. The roads were snowy/dirty slushy. Not being able to wash windows was hazardous because I had periods where I couldn't see out of the windows.
When I finally made it to the Newark airport to return the car there were no signs to show me where to return a Thrifty car. I was also still having a difficult time seeing out the windows due to frozen ice dirty slush I was not able to get off due to wiper & fluid issue. I finally found the area I thought was Thrifty return. When I got to Thrifty desk I was late to catch my flight. The representative told me I parked in the wrong spot & explained I could not see signage nor could I see out the windows & that I would be late for my flight. She told me there was nothing she could do. I had to take the time to move car around the corner & I almost missed my flight. This Safety issue with Thrifty not maintaining their cars is a serious problem. I was also charged the wrong amount. I was quoted Car Rental Fees: 2 Weekend Days @ $13.50/day, 1 Extra Day @ $13.50/day $40.50, Estimated taxes & fees $38.64, TOTAL ESTIMATED CHARGES $79.14. I had to pay 97.36.

I have rented a car at Thrifty Berlin Schoenefeld Airport from 18th till 21st December 2014. The car was Dacia, license plate **, rental agreement no. **. When I returned the car, the attendant noted a minor scratch, about 1.5 cm long, on the front bumper protector. The scratch was noticed in the damage report as a new one, marked as K. When I have been asked to sign the report, I wrote not agree with the K damage and put my signature. I'm a very careful driver with 20 years driving experience, and when I park, I always avoid places where I could be dinged. I am pretty sure the scratch was pre-exist but not documented. Given its location, it could have been easily missed when I picked up the car. The parking lot was fully dark and not lighted during the pick-up time (around 10pm), so the company did not provide the conditions for me to inspect the car and I was not able to visually detect the scratch.
I do not take the responsibility for the scratch and insist that I must not be charged for the damage, even considering the cost of the scratched plastic panel is negligible. Considering the severity of the issue, that should not even been classified as the damage, but rather as a regular wear and tear - even the paint is not stripped. Anyway, I am not personally involved in the scratch appearance. I enclose the photos I have taken.
Besides this issue, I have faced another incident when returned the car, even more unpleasant one. When provided the car for inspection, I discovered I have left my iPad inside the car. The two workers, returning back after inspecting my car, had not told me anything regarding the left items. Only after I asked them directly about the iPad, one of them unzipped his jacket and pulled out my iPad, hidden under the clothes, pretending that was a joke. Obviously, they intended to steal my gadget. If I did not start to question them, they did not mean to return it. That is highly disappointing incident, making extremely bad image about the company. Today I received the bill - breakdown fee/scratch - 200.00, service fee 25.00 and tax 19% - 4.95, total 229.95 Euro.

Total value of 257.72 usd, payment by Visa card. At Thrifty in Las Vegas airport I presented the voucher and my documents and after the conference the receptionist said that the Fusion was not available, but I could choose any sedan in the parking, another last information is that the fuel tank was included and I could deliver it empty. During the service, it was confirmed that insurance, fees, taxes and GPS were included, to finish, I was give him my credit card to launch fines of debts or any accident if it occurred, he asked me also to digitally sign the equipment.
Already in the parking, I was directed by another employee to the available sedans, this confirmed me again that could pick up anyone, I just picking up a VW Passat. Upon returning to Brazil, 28/12, I checked one debit VISA $252.44, released directly by Thrifty. I Wrote to Rentalcars asking that expense, as it was all included in the reserve, it was the company that I had the business and the where I should to claim this situation. The Rentalcars treated the case from Thrifty but not solve it, since the Thrifty responded to Rentalcars with a copy of an A4 contract with my signature at the bottom, saying that I had hired vehicle up grade and the Tripsaver (travel assistance), completed the justification fuel to have delivered the car with the tank with 1/4 and the rates on these extras, and therefore could do no more.
Note that, I did not ask any service, or upgrade car, much less the Tripsaver, first because the Rentalcars and Thrifty not handed me the hired vehicle, second because the Passat car is not a upgrade of the Fusion car and third because I had my own travel assistance contracted in Brazil, so no reason to make a second signing. As for fuel, only delivered on an empty tank on the right that I was passed by the Thrifty. Actually, I identified that the signature existing in the document actually was the same digitally performed by me on the equipment, and they moved to a contract that I did not take in my hands. I await a solution and the cancellation of undue expenditure launched unilaterally on my credit card.

My wife and I needed a car for a week to drive around in Florida. We had never rented with Thrifty, but their prices were so competitive that we definitely wanted to give it a try. The rental experience itself went relatively smoothly and the car was nice as well. However, when driving to Miami Airport to drop off the car, the fuel indicator broke. It just went to zero. We had just filled up the car half way from Tampa to Miami, so we knew that there was fuel in the tank. Since return policy was to return the tank full, we stopped at a gas station in Miami where we paid an exorbitant price for fuel (4.50 per gallon) to be sure that the car was full.
Upon arrival at the return station, we explained the situation to the clerk, telling him that we had just filled up the car, showed him the receipt from the Shell station we had just been to minutes earlier and said that the fuel indicator doesn't work. He, however, charged us a) 160 dollars extra since apparently we were returning the car empty and b) another 12 bucks for returning the car half an hour late. Since we had a flight to catch, we weren't able to resolve the situation at the airport. I called Thrifty later and every time, I got a person who said they will look into the matter and call us back. Well, they never did. I also tried to get my money back by disputing the charge through the credit card company but that didn't work either. I ignored the red flags because I was in a rush, continued on... When I arrived, I was told that I didn't have a reservation, but there was a car available. I wasn't too happy but there was a car so I took it. The attendant asked when I would return the vehicle and I advised it would either be Monday or Tuesday. He said that was fine and that was the end of that.
I ended up buying a new car over the weekend. So I returned the vehicle on Monday, happy to save the extra money. Unluckily... I was greeted by the same attendant at the desk again. I was advised at this time that I would still be charged for the extra day because that was on my reservation. I advised the attendant that when I picked up the car, that there was no reservation and that I had told him that I would deliver the car back on Monday or Tuesday. And that he did not advise if I returned the car on Monday, that I would be charged for the extra day.
He just shrugged his shoulders and told me that there was nothing he could do, and that the date on the reservation was for Tuesday so I would be charged. Then, I told him that the rate I was given over the phone was for $140.00 and he was charging me $180.00. He asked if I had the reservation with me, which I didn't because it was OVER THE PHONE. And he told me that he wouldn't honor it because he couldn't prove it. At no time did he attempt to call Thirfty Reservation to see what the rate was. In fact, he took a call while I was standing there and was even ruder to the person on the other line than he was to me!! I couldn't believe it!
So now, not only was I being charged for an extra day that I didn't have the car, but I was going to be charged a higher rate!! The attendant advised that when they receive the reservations, that they only send over the reservation dates and not the rates and that 100% of his clients bring their confirmations with them. I told him that this was highly unlikely as not everyone has access to printers and what about the people who BOOK OVER THE PHONE!! Again, he shrugged his shoulders and told me there was nothing he could do.
It's absolutely unbelievable, the lack of customer service from Thrifty. I have rented cars from both Enterprise and Budget and returned the vehicles earlier and have never been subjected to this kind of treatment. The last time I rented from Enterprise, they picked me up, gave me the same rate as they quoted (and I didn't have a printout) and they dropped me off once I returned the car. I will never ever rent a car from Thrifty and I will make sure that everyone I know never rents from Thrifty. Use Enterprise or Budget. They are much better and won't rip you off!!

They didn't had any full size car and I was forced to take a SUV for double what my budget allowed me to. It was 10:30 pm... What could I do??? Wasn't any cheaper at other companies (the day of, they don't do deals). Tried to talk with Thrifty customer service, Was cut off 2 times and was finally told to ** off because I eventually sign the agreement for the SUV!!! How can you be in business by being so crooked. My company has an account with Thrifty. I am a Blue Chip member, and rent cars all over the U.S. almost weekly, and have been since the mid-1980's. Starting Nov 11, I have been receiving threatening phone calls from the Thrifty Security Department. The recording states (approximately)..."LEGAL ACTION WILL BE TAKEN AGAINST YOU. YOU SHOULD RESPOND IMMEDIATELY TO THE THRIFTY SECURITY DEPARTMENT OR YOUR RENTAL VEHICLE WILL BE REPORTED AS STOLEN. CALL 866.791.1489." I spent one hour on the phone with a Thrifty representative answering this telephone line, that is, one full hour on Nov.16, another full hour on Nov. 17, and another full hour on Nov. 18. Each time I was assured the "mistake" would be cleared and the calls would stop.
I also stated all of this in an email to the Thrifty Customer Service department, where it was stated that a Representative would contact me immediately. No contact has been made. It is now Nov. 20th and my cell phone has already received 2 more recordings before noon. This is the worst rental car agency I have ever used and I am stuck with them because my company is hooked on their low prices, but the price we (employees) are paying to deal with Thrifty for professional travel is overwhelming. The employee apathy and complete failure of Thrifty customer service is astounding. I will accept no less than a formal letter of apology from Thrifty for this outrageous accusation and pathetic treatment.

Really wish I could give 0 stars. I've never rented from this location before, but the wife needed a car and she was going to be in MN. I've rented from Thrifty all over the US and never had an experience as bad as my wife had. Horrible check in, problems with a tire right after leaving, and overcharged when checking back in. I'll explain in further detail.
First, when she gets there, there is no one around and no sign telling people what to do (this is in the garage after dealing with the person inside). After waiting for about 5-10 minutes, my wife looks around and finds the two attendants sitting in a car just kicking back. Seemingly put out, one of the guys gets out of the car to answer the questions and tells her where to go pick her car from. She, feeling uneasy about the situation, now asks the man to show her the cars and makes sure he sticks around for the inspection. Again, he acted extremely put out to be doing his JOB.
Shortly after getting on the highway and heading to her destination, a warning signal came on telling her one of the tires had low pressure. She ended up putting air in the tire a couple of times that day. The next day, the tire was flat after having sat overnight so she called Thrifty and they sent roadside assistance to change it and told her where to take it to be fixed. There was never any discussion of us being charged for the roadside assistance. She takes the vehicle to the shop to fix the tire, but they're too busy so she has to go back later in the day. She finally gets it fixed later and they charge us $30 for the repair. I say fine, maybe she did pick up a nail while she was driving it, I'm not going to fight over $30.
The capstone to the whole experience was when my wife brought the vehicle back to return it. Not only did Thrifty charge her more than was quoted originally, but they tacked on an extra $80 for the roadside assistance call (FYI, we have two types of insurance that cover us for roadside even in a rental, so this is ridiculous to be finding out after the matter). The manager Shakula was extremely rude and would not take care of the problem. So after hearing all of this, I try to call the corporate line where I was dropped 4 times (before even expressing what the problem was) and when I finally did get through to people, there was no supervisor available or they refused to transfer me and while this part sounds racist and it might be a little, ALL of the phone reps were named things like Star or Shaniqua and sounded like they were from the hood. Now the names don't really matter to me, but it helps to have people on the phone that sound professional if they're dealing with customer service issues. It also helps if they know what they're doing.
Since I was unable to get through to a supervisor who knew what they were doing, I've now just issued a dispute with the CC company and will proceed to share this experience with everyone on the net. I really hope the extra $120 Thrifty may or may not get out of us is worth the loss of business from both of our companies and our personal travel, as well as the bad reviews I now feel compelled to share.

I rented a car for nine days in Houston Texas early October through RentalCars.com and got charged double the amount I agreed to in the reservation. I wanted an economic car with navigation. I didn't want to drop off the car empty, so did not choose the refuel option by the rental firm. I came to the Thrifty rental desk for picking up my car. The woman behind the desk treated me as if I was stupid. She told me that the car I rented is not available and that I didn't book through Thrifty, so it wasn't their problem. I received a different car I reserved, but anyway I wanted to get on the road... I returned to drop off the car. My credit card was then charged with an additional amount of $315 USD.
I called the customer service desk. They told me I booked different options (which the lady at the rental desk probably added for me). The following additional charges were booked: - Personal passenger protection plan for $60 USD... I didn't have passengers traveled alone, why would I book this..? - Emergency Sickness Protection... to get to the hospital in case I got sick, well I have travel insurance for this.. I don't need another insurance from my car rental place out of all places. - I apparently purchased a roadside assistance program for $62 USD, as if the car I rent would break down and I want to cover the risk for this amount of money in a week... Well it makes you think, do you want to rent here with a risk this high...? - The lady that checked me in told me to leave the car without fuel, since I paid for it already, there goes another $36 USD - $9 USD per gallon(!) - The $15 USD I agreed to pay for the toll road voucher turned out to be more than $65 USD.
This company is a scam. (!) I would not recommend it. At first you think you rent a cheap car, but for this money I could have been driving a corvette at another company. Don't get ripped-off by Thrifty rental cars at the George Bush Intercontinental Airport (IAH) in Houston Texas and have a wonderful day instead.

We are on vacation and have a Thrifty car Rental agreement conformation from Oct 1st-Nov 30th at Tampa International Airport. The total was supposed to be $1,586.51 for the 2 months. After 2 weeks we had a flat tire and was told I had an appointment to have the tire replaced. When we finally found the location Thrifty's roadside assistance said they made, they said Thrifty never contacted them. We spent almost a day finding another location to replace the tire. That day it was 95 degrees and almost all our frozen food was spoiled and had to be disposed.
Upon check in at the Tampa Airport, I was told to bring back the car at the end of the first month and they would check for damages and we would be on our 2nd month rental. But that wasn't the case. At the Tampa Airport we were told that the car had to be turned in and we would need to pick another. I said we would like a car of the same class. They said, "We don't have one." So after an hour we got a car that was not in the same class. And the agent said the total charges would be $1255 which included an optional coverage charge of $479.70, which I never accepted. Talking to a manager all I got was I'm sorry.
Having been at the rental facility in Tampa for over an hour we gave in and just wanted to continue our vacation. AND, one of your workers was very rude when we checked in and management wasn't any help. This rental has been the worst experience I have ever had with a car company and ask that have asked them to credit this extra charge. I never accept additional coverage and my 2nd month's rental doesn't have this additional coverage. We have probably spent over 5 days with this issue and would appreciate your assistance with this matter. I will not rent from Thrifty/Dollar again.

My experience with thrifty was horrible during our check-in, rental, and afterwards, when we were charged twice for our rental and accused of keeping the car for an extra week. Thrifty's counter was not clearly marked in the rental car terminal and we had to circle on foot, luggage trailing, many times before someone at another rental agency directed us to the unmarked counter. After waiting in a long line, we were told that the make of car we had reserved was not available. We then chose to upgrade. We also added a third driver, my husband, and rented a car seat. The Thrifty team member told us that we would NOT be charged for one of the additional drivers OR the car seat rental.
When we finally made it out to the lot, the Ford Fusion was also not available. An agent there told us to choose amongst the vehicles on the lot. We selected a Rav 4 and were told to take a car seat from a pile of them near your outdoor kiosk. During our rental period, a warning light went on in the vehicle and we had to take time out from our vacation to call Thrifty to be advised what to do. We were told to simply drive the vehicle back on the 16th as planned, however it was unnerving to drive a car with a warning light on.
When the credit card statement arrived, we found we had been charged for an extra week. Thrifty did nothing to resolve the situation. There is no communication among the team members in various locations, no accounting for changes to a reservation, no documentation provided, and no recourse once an error has been discovered that involves being overcharged by a significant amount.

As another customer from VA has written, I too am a victim of Thrifty rental car hidden charges and fees. I was charged over $500 for a drop off fee from Buffalo to Philadelphia. The agent Zac, (who was courteous) never went over the contract when we rented the car. Had he done so, I would have seen in writing that the car was not rented one way as I had wanted to do. Now I am trying to get an itemized statement for cost of: plane ticket from Buffalo to Philadelphia one way, gas receipts, food receipts, and hourly rate for the driver, all of which I have to pay for.
Tom, the agent I spoke to this morning said he was unable to provide me that receipt. He emailed me the generic receipt. I will never, ever rent from Thrifty and will make sure anyone that asks me my experience with Thrifty will be told my experience. I hope corporate Thrifty does read these reviews and responds.

I flew to St. Louis, MO for work and specifically asked the agent to add the full coverage to my rental, since I was in a different town and wanted to feel protected. Long story short - Got into a fender bender, the cops came and took all of the info they needed, including the insurance information. I got a phone call from their fleet manager (the worst "manager" on Earth), she wanted to inform me that I wasn't covered by their policy. WHAT?
I even called their office to ask what I was supposed to do about the rental (right after the crash, while the cop was standing next to me) the guy told me "If the car is drive-able, just keep it until the end of your agreement, just make sure you come in early to file an incident report and everything, but you're ok". It turned out that their employee who sold the policy to me, picked the lowest/basic coverage. So they're trying to file a claim under my insurance!!
I called the manager (big mistake), her level of professionalism is just ridiculous, typical underpaid "manager" on a power trip. Her answer was "We don't offer free coverage, never did and never will... You thought you had insurance, you didn't... I don't know what to tell you..." Who's asking for free coverage? I've been driving around for 30 days, under the impression that I had insurance, just to find out that I didn't because their clerk was too busy trying to be funny and clever. What if I had gotten into a more serious accident? What if someone had died?
Here's a tip, trying spending a little more time training your high school dropouts, so maybe they'll be able to perform the job (Yeah, right). I called their corporate office and they "tried" to help me with my case, but unfortunately that location (St. Louis airport) is a franchise, that explains SO MUCH! Her answer was, "I don't want you to repeat the story, there's nothing we can do to help, you'll have to deal with that franchise..." DO NOT RENT FROM THEM, YOU WILL REGRET IT!!!

As I went to return the car, I got stuck in traffic, and I left in good time, but it (traffic) was unusually bad that day for some reason. Anyway, I arrived at Glendale, and the office person was about to lock the door. I told her my situation and asked her to take the key, as I had a flight leaving before the office opened the next morning. She informed me that I would have to leave the car at LAX, and I did, caught my flight, came home. Yesterday, I got a bill for $698 from Thrifty. My bill was 153.47 plus insurance. So they are charging me $500 for dropping the car at LAX, which is 20 miles from Glendale. I am a senior citizen and disabled. My advice for any traveler is to NEVER rent from Dollar Rent A Car, Thrifty Car Rental in Germany or Budget Rent A Car. All three are represented in Germany and elsewhere in Europe by a different company - Buchbinder Rent A Car. I was a victim on a recent trip to Germany. Since my return I am amazed to see the multitudes of complaints regarding the same unscrupulous business practices used by Buchbinder to cheat international customers. So many people have shared their story about how awful this company really is. I am amazed that Buchbinder can stay in business OR that Dollar, Thrifty and Budget still allow Buchbinder to represent them.
Buchbinder repeats the same scams on untold number of customers. Buchbinder, doing business as Dollar/Thrifty/Budget throughout Europe, advertises appealingly low fares on a number of travel websites (Priceline, Hotwire, Expedia, Tripadvisor, etc.) to lure in customers. Once you arrive at the counter and are tired and need the car you reserved...that is when one or all of the scams start. The stories from cheated customers are all the same - they either had to pay higher insurance because Buchbinder will not accept credit card insurance coverage (can not decline their insurance) or they lose a large deposit for imaginary damage to the car or a missing spare tire once the car is returned.
My Dollar car rental reservation through Priceline was quoted at $300 for a two-week rental at Frankfurt Airport in Germany. To actually drive away with the car I reserved I was charged $740 - MORE THAN DOUBLE. Buchbinder refused to allow me to decline their insurance. My credit card company covers rental car insurance and in 30-plus years of renting cars I have never had a problem declining coverage from any other renter. Buchbinder though required a letter from my credit card company specifying the coverage. When that was produced they then said the coverage was not enough - they needed $75,000 not the stated $50,000. My guess is that no amount would have satisfied them since their objective is to charge you for their insurance.
There were no cars available at other counters at the airport so like most of the other victims I had no other options, but to accept their scam with the hope I could resolve a satisfactory outcome with Priceline and my credit card company. Neither company supported me since I had 'accepted' the Buchbinder insurance by signing their agreement. So I ended up paying more than double for my car rental. I also noticed on return of the car that the spare tire was missing and Buchbinder tried to charge me for that too, but I was more successful arguing that charge. I'm glad I didn't need the tire in an emergency. Now I always check to see there is a spare.
In closing. My mistake was not reading reviews like this before I arrived. Had I done so I would have rented from a different company. I suggest Sixt, Europcar or Hertz. I have had no problems with any of these companies. Their advertised prices may be a bit higher than Dollar or Thrifty or Budget, but in the long run you will save money because Dollar, Thrifty and Budget are all represented by Buchbinder and Buchbinder will cheat you. Please save yourself the headaches and stress - DO NOT RENT FROM BUCHBINDER in Europe (Dollar, Thrifty or Budget). I know that I will never rent a car from any of these companies again - in a foreign country or anywhere else.

The car rental was a good value. However, the post rental activities would be a textbook case for how to lose market share. I received a notice concerning tolls ($14.50) and an exorbitant administrative fee ($90) even though I paid for the all inclusive plate pass. I called the number on the notice thinking it was Thrifty, but it was a third-party. I told them of my situation and they told me the record did not show that I had purchased the plate pass and therefore I would be charged unless I could provide proof otherwise. They wanted me to go find my agreement showing where I paid for it and then they would research it and let me know.
This was an ugly conversation. I thought this was absolutely ridiculous so I tried to call Thrifty direct. After multiple calls, the only way I could get a live person who actually worked for Thrifty was to call the rental line. When I finally reached a live person they had to transfer me. The next person looked up my agreement and said yes I had purchased it. They told me the company they worked with had a glitch that sent out a bunch of emails by mistake. That was not my experience. They flat out told me I did not purchase it. The live person said I would have to contact their third-party with my correct information. Talk about making a bad situation worse!!!!!!
Thrifty knew they had an issue, they knew the company they contracted with was wrong and then rather than correct the issue themselves, they make their customers correct the problem. Talk about making a bad situation worse. This has got to be the worst case of customer service I have ever experienced. Shame on them for working with an inept partner and shame on them not taking corrective action. I paid $58 for the convenience of not having to deal with paying $14.50 in tolls. We rented a car through Expedia for our trip to Hawaii. We did not plan on getting the car until a few days into our trip so where it says to call the shuttle for pick up they lied. They DO NOT pick you up to bring you to their rental offices so it cost us 42.00 to take a cab from our hotel back to the airport to get the car. I said that I had requested the rental from Waikiki but the person on the phone said I had to go all the way to the airport. We get there and there are already 2 different customers in battles over their rental problems.
After driving the car for a couple of days, we were on the highway outside of Honolulu when the car loses all power and we get a picture of a wrench, after being terrified of being stranded on the highway in the middle of nowhere. I let it coast to a side road with the 4 ways on and went through the operator's manual and discovered the wrench indicated that there was a problem with the power train and AWD. I shut it off and sat for a short time, I then decided to start it up and see what happens. It started and the warning indicator went out and power was restored. We decided to try and make it back
As it were, we were returning the car that day as well and really weren't comfortable returning it all the way to the airport so we returned it to the Waikiki location. They charged us a drop off fee of 42.00 (never mentioned) also conveniently the cost for a cab ride, because I know full well they were going to rent it out again from that location. We also told them about the breakdown and got a shrug of the shoulders, they didn't care. We had 4 disabled people in the car and it would have been horrifying if we had been stranded where we were. It was already a scary thought when the trouble started and thinking of how we were going to get help to get back.
After dropping the car off and getting back to our hotel and realized we left our handicapped placard and our parking pass for our hotel in the car. A bigger nightmare than expected. I phoned the number on the paperwork I had and explained about the left items. He transferred me and I got cut off. I phoned again and got the same guy. He transferred me again to an uninterested female that cut me off. I phoned again and was cut off yet again. I tried both local numbers and got recordings. I gave up for the night as I was worn out and very frustrated.
I decided to send an email to the customer service and asked where I needed to phone to find our items but received no reply. We decided to cab it to the office we returned the car to, another 10.00, that has now cost an extra 90.00 to rent this car. We get there and lo and behold the car is still on the property, so much for the charge to take it back to the airport, pretty sure they were going to rerent it from this location so why the drop off fee? I also explained we didn't trust driving it any further. It didn't matter. They also knew which car the placard was left in and a simple call to my cell listed on the rental file would have been so easy. We did get the handicap placard back but our parking pass for our hotel was thrown out.
After arriving back in our Country days later, I finally received an email response from their customer service saying that their lost and found is at the airport location and we would have to identify the item and show ID, hard to do when you are no longer in the Country. I wonder if we had not taken the initiative to go back to where we dropped off the car if someone would have looked at the government paperwork on the back of the placard and contacted us to make sure we got it back. It wasn't an unimportant item left behind nor a difficult one to locate the owner of the placard.
I am really disappointed with the service or lack thereof and would really like the 84.00 US dollars that it cost to pick up and drop off this car. I don't think I am being unreasonable as it did not state that they only provide shuttle service between the airport and the airport rental office nor does it say anything about a drop off fee. This company has much work to do in the area of customer service.

I informed her that I had not opted for this insurance and the agreed upon price was changed. She claimed that the total was given to me at time of rental, but it was not. They could not locate my original paperwork and no management staff was on duty. I was told a manager would call me the next day, never happened. Calling Thrifty corporate did no good either. Contacting credit card company now to see if they can help. Stay away from this company.

I Called 4 times to try and get someone to change the rental into my name, they all refused. Spoke to the supervision at Blue Chip, told him this would be the last time I rent a car from Thrifty. Whatever you do, don't use the E-ZPass (electronic toll paying) supplied in Thrifty cars. I recently rented a car out of Islip, NY and went into NYC and back out once during my stay. I just received a bill for a $5.33 toll and a $15 administrative charge! They have the balls to put in the letter "As a customer courtesy, your rental agreement will only incur a maximum of seven administrative fees. That would mean for $37.31 in tolls, they would charge me $105! Since they have my credit card, charging me for the tolls costs them about 30 cents. There is no warning of these fees. They are just a complete rip off.

WOW! I should have read all these complaints before EVER renting from Thrifty Car Rental. PLEASE DO NOT RENT FROM THRIFTY... EVER! I rented a FULL-SIZE car online through EXPEDIA for one week at $273.55 net, to be picked up on the 7th of August 2014 at San Diego International Airport. Like R.R.of League City, TX, (see below complaints) we were hot and tired after flying from Richmond, VA to San Diego. Had to wait 35 minutes for a shuttle, then 35 minutes at rental location just to get to the counter. I was then told they were all out of the MID-SIZE car I ordered. I replied, "Fine, give me a free upgrade!" They told me they couldn't do that, I'd have to pay for the upgrade... to get the car I asked for originally. I'm 71, with a bad back, and can't stand for long periods... so I'm already in agony by the time I get to the counter. I told them, "Whatever! Just get me a full-size car." They handed me some papers to sign for an upgrade, which I signed.
Then they presented me a bill for $544.86! I was hurting too badly to even look at the bill until later in our hotel room. When I looked, I saw that they had charged me the weekly rate for a MID-SIZED car PLUS and upgrade fee of $26/day for 7 days. I was upset and went back to the counter at a "slack time" to discuss the outrageous fee, but was told that they couldn't do anything... it was company policy since I had REQUESTED an upgrade (even though my EXPEDIA agreement was for a FULL-SIZED car). When I returned home two weeks later I went online to check THRIFTY CAR RENTAL prices for a FULL-SIZED car for a one week contract. It was only $10 less than the 7 x $26/day they charged me to "upgrade" to FULL-SIZE!!! That amounts to my paying full price for TWO CARS, when I only got one!
All they had to do was cancel the original mid-size contract and give me a new contract for a full-sized car, rather than ADDING THE PRICE OF A FULL-SIZE CAR to the original price of the MID-SIZE CAR that they DIDN'T HAVE ANYWAY. I figured this MUST have been a mistake of the agent at the counter... charging me for two cars... so I wrote a complaint to THRIFTY CAR RENTAL Headquarters. They responded that since I had asked for an upgrade, it was COMPANY POLICY to charge the upgrade fee on a daily basis... essentially doubling the price.
So I CALLED company headquarters to register my complaint at being charged double... and got the SAME, "It's company policy to charge the upgrade fee when the customer REQUESTS an upgrade!" BEWARE OF THRIFTY CAR RENTAL. As you can see by reading the complaints, they have NUMEROUS ways to collect a LOT MORE than what you were originally promised.

On the evening of Sept. 9th 2014 after a long international flight I went to pick up a car I had reserved online with Thrifty Car Rental. When I got to the bus destined for the pick up location the driver told me that there were no cars available. I told the driver I had reservation, but he repeated that there were no cars. When I was talking to him more people arrived also with reservations. The driver refused to take us to the rental office because there were no cars. It took me over 2 hours to find a car with another company at Dulles. I ended up paying twice the amount I had expected. Dulles is not an easy place to find another car, you cannot walk between rental places like in many other airports. The car rentals can only be accessed by taking each company's bus to their location. The whole ordeal was very frustrating. I'm writing this to let other people know that this is what they may expect from Thrifty/Dollar car rental company.

Went to the Avis Premier and was required to buy all their bells and whistles to rent their car. Again Thrifty agent said I would be reimbursed the additional cost, which were $300 additional fees. I submitted the form and received a call from the Thrifty Representative and was told they would not pay for the additional options that were not optional with Avis Premier. I rented a car from JFK Thrifty location on the new year's eve (Dec 31st) 2013 for family vacation. I drove to Atlantic city without difficulty and came back to my friend's apartment the same night. However when next day when I tried starting car, it didn't. I called customer care to send some support at 11 AM. Customer care lady took my address and said that help is on the way and will reach there between 30-45 mins. My family waited there for 1 hour, and we called again. Same lady told us that help is on the way. We kept calling - we got the same answer every time. After 3 hours we got a call from customer care saying that we reached the destination, but we couldn't see them. They told us the address they were on, it was completely different. They told us that it will take them 2 more hours to reach to new address. We had our flight in less than 3 hours from JFK, we couldn't wait for them. So we informed them about the address and gave them my friend's contact number. We took the taxi and left.
After reaching JFK, we personally went and informed Thrifty office about the situation. After all this drama, I received call from Thrifty saying the car is abandoned and we are going to take legal action against it. We again called and informed customer care. Thrifty charged my card with huge amount ($1800) for towing charges, even though I had insurance which covered towing. I kept on reaching out to them thru call and emails, but nobody responded. After I wrote on their Facebook wall, one person replied back. And he said that Thrifty can't remove the charges because I abandoned the car, which I didn't. This customer service is really bad and customers are paying for Thrifty's horrible service. I still didn't get my money back. What should I do? I am ready to file a legal complaint against Thrifty. Thrifty ruined my family vacation and new years and also charged tremendously for it's own faulty service.

My father is 84 years old and can hardly walk. It took me 5 calls, talked to 4 people (one of whom hung up on me after she said it was my fault) before I was connected to ** at the SLC location. On the 17th of august, 2014, I went to collect the car I had hired from this company: The Sheraton Heathrow hotel branch of Thrifty Car & Van Rental in London. After driving for approximately 30 miles, the car began to release smoke from the front bumper. I called for the company's car rescue service and the car was towed back to the Sheraton Heathrow Hotel branch. The tow person informed me that it was likely clutch damage, and that this damage should not have been caused by such a short driving distance. This means that the car I had been supplied with by the company must have been faulty to start with, something I am not happy with as it caused us a great deal of stress as well as potential danger. However, once I arrived at the branch, the reception claimed that I had caused the damage to the clutch and that I had to pay £500, straight away. I was very unhappy with this accusation, and with the fact that the receptionist refused to replace the car unless I paid this money right away - furthermore, I am an experienced driver with 20 years of driving under my belt, and I'm sure that I know how to work a clutch.
Lastly, I was dissatisfied due to the fact that I had paid for full insurance, and when buying it I was reassured that it covered absolutely everything-yet when the issue arose, your company claimed clutch damage was not listed under the terms. No paper policies or terms related to this full car insurance were presented to me to back up this claim. However, out of necessity, reluctance to waste even more of my own holiday time over the issue, and the fact that I needed a car to travel, I paid the £500. I do not agree to accept the liability of the damaged clutch, without a proper inspection by qualified engineer. The lady in reception performed very rude & not professional but always claims deposit for the damage. It is very bad experience and made my trip in UK very unpleasant.

I've just been ripped off big time by Thrifty Car Rental. In mid-April, I rented a car from them in Austin, TX. The car had no damage when I received it and likewise received no damage during the time I had it. Unfortunately, they claim that the car was returned to them with hail damage (to the tune of about $3K). From the time I took delivery of the car until the morning of its return, there was no precipitation in Austin. That morning there was a storm passing through the area. In fact, it was raining pretty hard at my hotel. I checked out and drove to a restaurant for lunch in Austin. During this time, it stopped raining. After lunch, I drove straight to the airport to return the car and catch my flight.
The gentleman who checked the car back in was looking at it very closely; more so that they normally do. I asked what he was looking for and he said hail damage. I was shocked, and then he explained that they had just had a strong hailstorm there at the airport. I told him that it hadn't hailed anywhere that I had been. He said I was lucky and indicated that my car was undamaged.
A month later I received a phone call from Thrifty's collection agency reporting that I would need to pay for some hail damage to the vehicle. I soon got some paperwork regarding the incident. One of the forms indicated that there was a Severe hailstorm 4/14 around 10:30 to 11 am. I did not return to the car rental location until 12:16 pm. This is over an hour after the airport area had allegedly received a hailstorm. No hail fell on that car while I had it, and it was completely undamaged when I returned it. The national Thrifty headquarters (as well as their collection agency) has refused to address any of the questions I have about the case. Such as:
1) Why was I cleared by the Thrifty representative who carefully inspected the car when I returned it?2) Why did it take a month for Thrifty to notify me about the claim?
3) Did anyone rent the vehicle between when I returned it and when the hail damage company inspected it (a period of one week)?
4) Was the car stored inside a completely enclosed garage between when I returned it and when the hail damage company inspected it?
5) Was the car subjected to damage (including hail) after I returned it?
6) Can Thrifty produce any photographs taken immediately after I returned the car showing any damage?
7) Why is there no indication on my final rental agreement paperwork (which includes turn-in information) that the car was damaged?
My insurance company agrees with me that the entire situation smells of rotten fish. Unfortunately, they have decided to just go ahead and pay for the damages. The unfortunate part of this is that Thrifty tacks on a bunch of other bogus fees that are not covered by insurance; such as loss of use, administrative fees, and diminution of value (which I don't understand considering that the damages have supposedly been repaired). I investigated what it would take to fight this in court, and discovered (not surprisingly) that it would cost much more to get justice than it would be to pay them for their imaginary damages. Anyway, I'm looking at a balance of around $1,500. This is an absolute crime. Boycott Thrifty. Tell your friends.

Munich Airport July 2014. I had booked a Volkswagen Golf with Thrifty, but when I got to the counter, there was no Golf, but they did have a 'similar alternative' (as they pointed out in my contract - they could give me). The 'similar alternative' was an Opel Zafira which is nothing like a Golf, so I turned it down. The Arab guy behind the counter (**) told me that if I didn't want the Zafira, I could go elsewhere; he was very bad mannered in his approach. So I took the Zafira - 1000 Euros was stopped from my credit card (in case of damage for which I had paid insurance for), and I was told where the car was. When I got to where the car was, the car had damage and there was nobody there to point this out to, so I had to go back to the counter and tell '**' about it. He admitted there was damage but had forgotten to tell me, and I then got a piece of paper with the outline of the car on it with the damage marked, and I got on my journey.
When I got back to Munich Airport with the car, booking the car back in was not through Thrifty but through a 'check in' outfit called ARWE (On commission to Thrifty and other car rental companies). The check in agent then went through EVERY tiny chip and scuff mark, with the resultant that I was charged an extra 586 Euros for 'damage.' I have got to say that these are predatory practice: A) Thrifty never did have in my opinion any Golf cars, and used the car as a 'come on.' B) They did not tell me of damage - I had to tell them. C) The 'damage' that was supposed to be on the car found by ARWE, must have been sold and re-sold a hundred times; and D) the gas tank was not full when I got the car but expected to be when I returned it. These people are bandits, straight out; they are thieves and what they practice should be stopped.

Prior to this rental, I had never rented a vehicle from Thrifty Car Rental before. After collecting our luggage and heading to the curbside to wait for the Thrifty shuttle that day, we were positive that we were going to have a great time in San Diego and the surrounding area. I wish that I can say the same for our rental experience with Thrifty. On the day of the rental, my family and I waited for almost 30 minutes before a shuttle finally picked us up at San Diego International Airport. There were several shuttle buses from National, Enterprise, Budget and other rental agencies that came and went, but none from Thrifty.
After our wait, we eventually got on the first Thrifty shuttle that came and made it to the rental location on Pacific Hwy. Once there, we were forced to join a line of customers for another 30 minutes before receiving service. However, we patiently waited because we were eager to get our rental car and begin our much awaited vacation. When we finally got to the counter and completed the necessary paperwork, we were instructed to go to Area #10 to get our car (mind you, this reservation was made over a month ago, in advance.)
My wife, our eight-year old daughter and I together with our three suitcases, a hand-piece each and 1 camera bag walked out to parking Area #10, but to our dismay, there were no vehicle in that area. I returned to the building and informed the person behind the counter (who happened to be the person who handled my rental and is also a manager) that there were no vehicles in that area. He told me that they are washing the car and it will be there. I walked back out to the parking area and waited for another 10 minutes. Still no car!
By then the same Manager was heading out to the parking lot because 2 other customers were asking the same question as I. I approached the Manager and explained that there were no vehicles there, and that I have already spent over an hour at the location just trying to get a vehicle that was reserved in advance. I also told him that it was unacceptable since I had a reservation. He told me that they are washing a car and that other agencies are doing the same thing. He did not even offer another type of vehicle or provided any other options.
I left and headed back to the parking area. It was very hot outside and with the combination of the noise from the low flying airplanes, it did not make the wait any easier. I then sent my wife and daughter to wait in front of the office building while I stayed with all our bags in the parking lot. A female worker finally pulled up with a car that was just washed and thanked me for my patience. However, no one examined the vehicle with me. I loaded up our bags, picked up my wife and daughter and left.
My rental agreement was printed at 12:37pm and I drove out of the parking lot at 1:17pm. That is a 40-minutes wait, coupled with the 30 minutes wait for the shuttle bus, 15-20 minutes drive from the airport, and 30 minutes spent in line at the counter. Please keep in mind that we took a 7:20 am (CST) flight from Houston, which connected in Phoenix. We have been up since 4:00AM (CST), hot, hungry, tired and very upset. While we waited through all of this, no one offered any kind words or even a bottle of water or helped to load up our bags or even offered an apology.
So, we were finally heading to our destination to Temecula Valley (about 90 minutes drive from the rental location). As my speed increased over 50 mph, the cars steering wheel started to vibrate and the front of the vehicle was feeling bumpy. So, I slowed down and continued to our hotel, rather than returning to the rental location because I knew that they had no other vehicles. More importantly, I needed to get to the hotel, so that I can get my family some food and somewhere that they can relax.
After checking into our hotel, I finally did an inspection of the vehicle. The vehicle (Nissan Altima Sedan) had over 55,000 miles, no mats, was dirty on the inside and had numerous scratches and dents on the outside. Not to mention the vibration and the bumpy ride. Around 3:45pm (PST), I called Thrifty Roadside service and told them about the car and our rental experience thus far. The person I spoke to (Amanda) was like a breath of fresh air. Amanda said that she did not know that Thrifty had such old vehicles in its fleet. She apologized and asked what I wanted Thrifty to do for me. I simply requested a similar but newer vehicle to be sent out to me and my current vehicle returned. She told me that she will contact the rental location and call me right back.
As promised, Amanda called back within a few minutes and said that Thrifty will get a replacement to me by 6.00pm (CST) since it was rush hour in San Diego, and they will pick up the 1st vehicle. That was all good with me. 6.00pm came and went and so did 6.30pm and still no car. I called Thrifty Roadside again and the representative said that it was raining in San Diego and there were traffic issues, and the driver will arrive within 45 minutes. The driver finally arrived at 8.10pm. I gladly signed the delivery paperwork and new rental agreement, handed the driver the keys and took the keys for the replacement vehicle. By the way, the driver noted that it was not raining in San Diego.
The next morning before our drive to Temecula Wine Country, I decided to inspect the replacement Nissan Altima. It had about 34,000 miles, was dirty inside and out. The car was filled with dents and scratches on the outside. It had no mats and was doused with air freshener to make it smell good. At the completion of our vacation in San Diego, to complete our rental return, I filled up the vehicle with gas in Solana Beach (about 22 miles from the rental location). And I made sure to top it off, so that it will still be full when I return the vehicle.
Once at the rental parking lot, the attendant asked for my receipt and said that I was supposed to fill up the vehicle or top off within 10 miles per the rental agreement. So, I told him that I made sure to top it off and the gas meter was showing filled, and the driving distance was 517 miles. I told him about my rental experience earlier and that he should not put me through this now. He wanted to hear nothing about my experience because he said I did not rent the vehicle to you. He told me to either take the car and top it off and get a receipt, or he will have to charge me for 1 gallon of gasoline.
At that point, I got angry with him. I then accompanied him to the gas station to confirm that he pumped additional gas into the vehicle. He then walked me to the checkout booth where he then printed the final receipt with the additional $9.89 for gasoline. We gladly boarded the shuttle to the airport (to get as far away as possible from such a terrible car rental experience) and my family and I have not discussed our rental experience since. Since then, no one from Thrifty has contacted me regarding this rental to offer an apology, consolation or anything that can make up for such a bad experience.
I am a business traveler and personally take about 6 business trips annually where I have the need for a rental vehicle. In addition, my family and I usually take 2-3 family vacations per year when we use rental vehicles. We also frequently rent vehicles when our primary vehicle is in need of mechanical repairs. I would like to point out that as mentioned before, this was my first rental from Thrifty. It was a very disappointing one especially with things that repeatedly went wrong from the start with the vehicle, not to mention the terrible customer service experience at the rental location.
I wanted to make you aware of my experience so as to prevent this from happening to other customers and their family because it puts a damper on a wonderful vacation experience. I have rented vehicles from other agencies before and while not 100% of them were perfect, they all had superior customer service, and certainly went out of their way to make up for a less than good rental experience. Thrifty's certainly did not live up to the message on its website.

When I was getting the car the clerk explained that there were now toll roads in the area and that I would need a pass as cash is not accepted. I asked if there were tolls where I was going, I got a map and showed the drive. He said he didn't know the city but that tolls were everywhere. He pointed to the card that said the pass rental was $15 and that the tolls would be added to my bill.
I drove to my destination and there was not one toll road. I returned the car, weekly rental, and I was not charged $15 for the pass but $63.95. I was told to contact Customer Service regarding the charge. The CS clerk said they would not reimburse me because there would be no way for the clerks to know the roads. I said if they are going to push a product they should know and she argued with me. I asked for a supervisor and was told there were no available and that they do not escalate. I have rented many cars and this is by far the WORST experience I have ever had. I will never rent from them as I felt I was scammed by them so they could take more money. They are a rip off.

Rented a full sized car on Expedia at an excellent rate. Went to pick up the car at the Thrifty's downtown Toronto location on a Thursday afternoon. There were two full-sized cars in an otherwise very empty lot. I had been assigned one but preferred the other (it had a hatchback) and in order for me to have it I was told it would cost me $75.00 more! (This never happens at AVIS - my usual rental agency - they always provide me with options, while I am still on the lot, in the same sized category, and for free). I paid under protest as I needed the hatchback and was in a hurry to leave. And, although I never usually get it, this time I was persuaded to purchase prepaid gas with the promise from the Thrifty's CSR that I would get a refund or bill readjustment if I brought the car back with gas in it. I did this but Thrifty's charged me for a full tank of gas anyway - saying that since I signed off on the rental form - I was obliged to pay for the all of gas, regardless.
I am appalled by Thrifty's lack of customer service. I was also left with the impression that the two CSRs on duty didn't like the Expedia price (owing to some muttered sarcastic remarks by one of the CSRs) and were looking at various ways to "plump up" the final bill (wonder how Expedia would feel about that). Would strongly suggest renting elsewhere and, if you are at all unsure, get the employees to sign off on their promises.

Poof - a charge of $149.99 appears on my credit card outside of the $98.08 I was to be charged. I was charged $99.00 by the way. Called customer service - very rude - said we left car filthy. Bologna! Told customer service not true and everything fine checking in and then she said it smelled like smoke too!
We don't smoke and our kids were in car also. Uh, they don't smoke - duh. She hung up. Went to airport and talked mgr ** who said it was a mistake and his GM would credit me. NEVER happened. Filed complaint w/ BBB and Attorney General. They aren't even BBB-accredited at locations I looked at. I will sue if nothing is resolved. Looked like they ONLY resolved a few issues on ATTY GENERAL site. How brazen! DO NOT RENT FROM THEM. I rented a car for 10 days from them in Nov of last year (2013) - funny how that one didn't come back filthy or smoky. Rented a minivan from Enterprise in June for 10 days to drive cross country and that didn't come back filthy or smoky. They need to be SHUT DOWN!

She replied, "Don't ever sign without reading first." There is no way I will ever rent with this company again. Worst customer service I have seen in a long time.

We got stuck at JFK in New York City on July 2nd. We needed to get home to Rochester, NY, about a 6 hour drive. I went to Hotwire on my phone and tried to get a car from JFK to ROC. I was thrilled to reserve one for $148.65. I took it, and we scurried to the Thrifty counter to get the car. The Thrifty lady at the counter at JFK was very helpful and I told her our flight was cancelled and we need to drive the rest of the way to Rochester. No problem. She got me the one day rental on a nice car and we were off. We arrived the next day in Rochester and then the fun started.
I went to the Thrifty counter at the Rochester airport and was promptly told that this was not their car. They seemed impatient that I would try to return it to them. After much discussion I learned that they were not 'THAT' Thrifty. They were a franchise location. Funny, the logo and sign looked the same to me! How would I know? They suggested that I return the car to Hertz. Ok, I try to work with people, I'll give that a try. The Hertz manager returned with me to the Thrifty counter and tried to reason with his counterpart. The Thrifty manager wanted to have nothing to do with it and would not help me. Eventually, in disgust with Thrifty, the Hertz manager took me back to his counter and tried to work thru the Thrifty phone system to return the car. He gave it his best shot, but even he got hung up on. Finally he manually wrote up a return ticket for the car and promised to work thru the system later to complete the return. Whew, wow it took a while, but I was done!
WRONG! Two days later I get a robo-call telling me to return the car or it will be reported as stolen. Nice. I called the supplied number and told them my car return story and that seemed to satisfy them. I understood there might be delays in processing the return from Hertz, so they might not see the car as returned yet. Good, well that put to bed. BUT WAIT... a few weeks later I get my credit card bill. Remember Hotwire quoted me $148.65 to rent the car from JFK to ROC. My Thrifty rental agreement says the same thing. Problem is my credit card was charged $339.53! What the heck is this?
I called Thrifty and waited thru the menus, holds, and forwards that are all too 'normal' now in customer service. I asked about the discrepancy and was told that I was charged an additional $150 drop charge for leaving the car at a location different than where I picked it up. I had two problems with that. One: That was the deal both when I quoted the rental on Hotwire and again at the Thrifty rental counter; pick up at JFK and return at ROC. Two: how does $148.65 plus $150 become $339.53? We talked for a long time and the customer service rep kept suggesting that this was all normal. That the price on my receipt was an 'estimate'. That I should have known about the $150 drop fee. She offered to read me the rental agreement. I declined. I asked her to read the section of the agreement where it says I will be charged an additional $150 if I don't return the car to the same location where I rented it and she refused to read that part of the agreement. She then started her mantra of "I cannot reimburse the drop fee" over and over. She asked me if she could help me with anything else. Apparently SHE was done with my primary concern.

Rented car from Seattle and returned to Portland. When I reviewed my credit card statement later, I noticed an additional charge of around $82. I immediately disputed the extra charge and was reimbursed the $82. Later I received a letter from Thrifty demanding I pay or face collections in 15 days. The letter was received 3 days before the 15th day. I wrote a letter asking why I was being charged the extra amount. No response has been received and now it appears I have a collection agency calling me. The fact that they don't respond to my inquiring is more upsetting than the extra charge itself. Because of this, I recommend avoiding Thrifty! It appears they have a habit of sneaking in extra fees with no explanation (from what I read regarding the main complaints against Thrifty). I did find their local staff (Seattle and Portland) courteous enough but their upper management who supports this practice should not and cannot be trusted.

I booked a rental car with Thrifty in JFK airport on June 7th. The reservation number was: **, Full size sedan from Saturday to Thursday. I went to the rental car place at 11 PM with my wife and 3 year old kid and 9 check-in bags. The lady there told me that she could not honor the reservation since her computers were down. I told her that I had already done the reservation and I would need the car. She kept insisting the fact that she couldn't do anything. I asked her what can be done, since it was nearing midnight and I was with my wife and kid and all the luggage. She told me to take another shuttle and to the Dollar or Hertz rental store where they would honor the reservation.
I immediately took the free shuttle and went to Dollar. The time was already 11:50 PM. There were 5-6 customers before me in the queue. I stood in the queue for about 1 hour 30 minutes. I was also on call with the Thrifty customer care who refused to help, stating that the department I connected to was either roadside assistance or reservation department. They also told me that the customer care would only be available between Monday and Friday in the normal business hours. They also told me that I could call between Monday to Friday and get the compensation. I heard the manager saying that she was short of cars and that she would honor only those who had booked their rentals with Dollar.
That was when my turn came to speak to the manager. I told her the whole situation and I also told her that the lady in Thrifty told me that Dollar would honor the reservations made at Thrifty. She didn't agree to that and she asked me to wait until all the customers of Dollar are gone. She then asked me to make a new reservation. This new reservation was $120 higher than the reservation I had with Thrifty. But, since I had no choice I took it. On Monday, when I called Thrifty, they told me that since I had not returned the car from Dollar back, they can't speak about the higher rental price I paid or about the compensation. When I asked them, that I need to speak to the manager, they would transfer the call to Dollar or Hertz.
After about 10-15 calls, I had a chance to speak to some Manager from Dollar and he accepted to honor the contract that I made with Thrifty and he reduced the price of the new reservation to match the price that I had already booked for. But he told me that I had to get in touch with Thrifty to get the compensation. Every time I call Thrifty to speak about the compensation for the 3.5 hours of time lost and roaming around in the midnight with a 3 years old kid and wife with 9 luggage, they keep transferring me to a different department.

First off, let me just say I'm surprised this company is still in business. I rented a car July 4, 2014 from thrifty contingent on an internet deal at the price of $150, which originally was $124 but additional fees were "conveniently" tacked on. We arrived at the store July 3rd before it was all over and done ended up spending over $353 dollars!!! Me and my husband were told we had to pay $70 to fill up the tank. They charged us extra to do so.
When we returned the vehicle the lady "CLAIMED" they had no record of the charges and charged us ANOTHER $70 bucks! The vehicle was not up to par and the windows had fingerprints on them and sounded as if it needed a tune up. Plus, about 70 miles into the ride the tire light came on. We spent a good portion or our drive putting gas and air in at every stop. The name Dollar Thrifty is the biggest joke ever because it is so far from the truth. THERE WAS NOT ONE THRIFTY DOLLAR SPENT ON THIS PIECE OF CRAP COMPANY OR CAR! I WILL NEVER EVEN DRIVE PAST ANOTHER DOLLAR THRIFTY.

Thanksgiving week of 2013 I rented a car from Thrifty at T.F. Green Airport in Rhode Island. This rental transaction was one of the worst of my 35 years of renting cars. They have a rude, pushy, woman giving customer's outright "attitude" when they refuse to purchase add-ons that just inflate the cost. Begin with Miss Rude behind the counter and before I left there she tried to rent me a transponder. Miss Rude behind the counter neglected to share this $15/usurious "administrative fee." She stated, "You will be charged for tolls incurred" if I did not get transponder. I knew of no need for the transponder as I am a RI native and was not going near any toll roads or bridges or so I thought. I drove the usual route and then I saw the sign Toll Plaza ahead. The toll was $.10 and as there was no cash lane I had no choice but to keep going.
This toll was for the new Sakonnet River Bridge on Rte. 24 North. I didn't give it any more thought. I was in RI the previous year and that TOLL did not exist. I figured that Thrifty would add the dime to my rental charges. No, instead in late December I received a notice from Thrifty (attached) that I owed them $.10 and also an Administrative Fee of $15.00. I wrote a letter to Thrifty and sent it "Certified Mail, Return Receipt" in which I informed them I was disputing the legality of the toll itself. Apparently according to two experts (and public outrage) one Marcus ** was lead counsel for the Federal Highway Administration (FHWA). He opined that according to FHWA rules the toll would have to be in place prior to construction completion of the bridge. I disputed the charge with Capital One and they quickly refunded my $15.10 and again I thought the matter closed.
Finally here comes an email I received today from a Collection Agency on behalf of EZ Pass with their erroneous claim that they sent me the invoice repeatedly. Strange, I never received one. I attempted to download the invoice but my computer security wouldn't allow it to happen. I replied to that email but it was rejected on their end. I informed them that I intend to look into the possibility of a class action lawsuit against Thrifty for their illegal actions. I have NEVER had a company send a bill to collections while it was actively being disputed. The end result is the SRB toll has been removed. I am from Rhode Island and even La Cosa Nostra doesn't charge 1500% interest which is what that $15.00 administrative fee breaks down to in reality.
I will never rent another car from Thrifty and I will share this review with various on line review sites. I plan on sharing my problems with Thrifty with a U.S. Senator from my state to see if the federal government will investigate the continuous, illegal actions by this company. I would have paid the toll had it been legal but since when in the USA is a citizen required to pay a patently illegal toll with an exorbitant fee? Payment for driving on toll road, E-ZPass Service Center: "You have not paid for driving on a toll road. This invoice is sent repeatedly, please service your debt in the shortest possible time. The invoice can be downloaded here."

The lady told me there would be no additional charges since it was the same day return. I wrote her name and the date and time that I spoke with her. When we returned the car on the 30th sure enough I was overcharged. They told me I would continue to be charged unless I agreed to pay the amount. I could come back tomorrow and talk with Manager. The next day I spoke with the manager named Rick and he said I would have my money refunded to me in 2 days. Six days later no money so we went up there again and he said he would send the e-mail again and should have within 3 business days. Still no money returned. We have gone back once a week for the past 3 weeks. Today I spoke with Vale and the Corporate Customer Service and she informed me that they did not care what others told me the charges stand. I want you to know that every time we went into the store there was at least one person there returning the car due to mechanical problems.
At the visit on the 1st of June we had three people there and when they heard about our complain they decided to terminate their rental agreement and go with someone else. The CSR at Corporate Office REFUSED to give me an address to complain to and finally told me if I wanted it to get it off of the internet. She was of no help to me and neither were the people at the numbers that kept saying call this number and that number would tell me to call the number that just gave me theirs. To top it all off we discovered, upon being pulled over, that we had NO TAIL LIGHTS on the car and since we were in the Upper Peninsula, we were told that there was no location to get another vehicle from. This is NOT a good place to rent a car from at all.

I rented a car from Thrifty at the Oakland airport, Oakland CA in mid-June, 2014. I noticed a dashboard light was on, but I didn't recognize what it was, and I was in a hurry. It turned out to be the tire air pressure warning light. In retrospect, I should never have left the lot with that car. At my destination, about 20 miles away, the tire went flat, it had a screw embedded in it. In addition, closer inspection revealed one of the front tires was nearly bald. Thrifty gave me a car that had not been properly serviced and was pretty much unsafe to drive.
I spent over 1 1/2 hours on the phone with their customer service and received ZERO assistance. I was told I was responsible for repairing or purchasing a new tire if a repair was not possible. I offered to put the spare tire on and asked to bring it back for a different car. I was told a different car was not available. This was one of the most frustrating experiences ever. I will never-ever rent from Thrifty again.
If all this wasn't enough, when I returned the car I accidentally left a small bag behind. When I immediately returned to retrieve it, it was recovered from the employee lunchroom and it was returned to me still partially open. BTW - I took the car to America's Tire in Dublin, CA. They cheerfully, efficiently and professionally repaired Thrifty's flat tire and did it absolutely FREE. How ironic that they took care of Thrifty's maintenance issue for me. I will be buying my next new tires from America's Tire.

Renters beware of Travelers Scam. I am an avid traveler and have rented cars in multiple countries and I have run into a nightmare with these affiliated companies. I booked my car while I was still in Canada through Thrifty's and when I arrived in Berlin, the rental was through an affiliated rental agency, Buchbinder, this happens all the time so I didn't think to much of it.
I arrived in Berlin, Germany late April 12, 2014, to find that the company did not have the car type that I had requested (not a big deal, I just needed a car for the week), so we did up the paperwork and I was rushed out the door and told my car would be on the 3rd level of the parking garage and to have a good night. I did a walk around that night not seeing any significant damages, a few scratches and scrapes but nothing out of the ordinary for a rental car (lesson learned to take close ups of every angle of the car and have them uploaded to the company).
The week with the car was awesome, it ran perfectly, there were no incidents and everything went off without a hitch, that is until the return. I returned the car in Munich on April 19, 2014, only to be told that I had cracked a fog light, I truly don't believe that I had damaged the car, but there was no way to prove that I had not cracked the fog light, so I signed off the damaged fog light and the return agency let me know that the airport rentals (that's where I picked up) always have issues and they never fully document the damage on the cars and he said he always has this problem.
He said he would submit the info to Berlin and hopefully I would not get charged. If the fog log checked out then the 600 Euro damage deposit for the car would be returned to my credit card or if they deemed it damaged by myself, only part of the damage deposit would be returned (he thought approx. 160 Euros). April 21, 2014 the deposit was returned fully on to my credit card. I was very relieved and thought things had worked themselves out.
Only once I had returned home from Germany did a charge on April 29, 2014 show up on my credit card for 660 Euros. Even with the insurance I purchased they are stating that $1034 CND (660 Euros) dollars is the deductible for the damages they found. When I inquired about the damages they were speaking about, they stated the fog light cover and scratches on the paint. When I received the report of the damages, they were very small scratches and scrapes, regular wear and tear that you see on rentals all the time.
I then contacted the agency again stating that these were not noted on the return and that these could have happened in the parking lot or in the wash bay after I signed the car off. I have been going back and forth with Buchbinder for 2 months on this issue now and there has been no resolution. I have been caught in a couple of travelers scams in my 20 years of traveling to over 30 different countries, and this is definitely one of them. This company will do anything they can to steal money from the traveler. This rental when I originally booked should have costed $750 CND, now the rental has costed $1800 and being back in Canada and not speaking German is their way of ensuring they cannot communicate back with the customer. My recommendation is to stay as far away from this company as possible. Enterprise is amazing, I have rented with them 3 times in three different countries and they are fantastic!

Thrifty Car Rental Problem. RA # **, Smoker car vehicle # ** made my wife physically sick. We picked up in Glendale AZ with plans to drop off in Jackson WY. Once the air conditioner was turned (1 hour into our trip) on, the smell was overwhelming. I called Thrifty while on the road. The nearest Thrifty location would be in Salt Lake Utah and we were to exchange the car there. We were told we should expect a credit for the one-way drop off fee. Once at Salt Lake, I was told they could not make a change in mid-contract and the credit would be taken care of at the Jackson airport. I have rented cars at the Jackson airport in the past and have always dropped them off at the airport. I was not told otherwise. My wife and I were in Yellowstone National Park that morning and had no cell reception.
Our flight was at 3:30pm Monday June 16th. I arrived 2 hours early and could not locate anyone from Thrifty. I finally located a Thrifty phone and the number was disconnected. Now what? I called the national number and was on hold for nearly 15 minutes waiting for someone to pick up. Finally a young lady answered (who I could barely understand). She simply said take the car back into Jackson and catch the shuttle back to the airport. I could have done this if the phone in the airport worked or I was told in advance. It was close to time to board the plane, what was I to do? I finally reached the local Jackson office and was told to leave the car there and call them back with the location where I parked the car. It was full of gas when left but no one to show the gas receipt to.
OK, that's the beginning... When I called the local Jackson Thrifty rental location I spoke with Jessie who identified himself as the manager. He was very condescending and disrespectful! He didn't care but gave excuses and no solutions. I was charged 2 drop off fees that he says was justified. He also charged me a fee to pick up the car at the airport which was less than 10 miles from their location in Jackson. As to a refund or credit for my wife's reaction to the smoke smell - forget it. This man should not have his job! He does a disservice to Thrifty.
Bottom Line: A refund is due since the first drop off was simply an exchange due to the car smell. A refund is due for the charge to pick up the car at the Jackson airport. A refund is due to the horrible smell we had to endure while driving from Phoenix to Salt Lake. If we had time, I would have turned around and returned the car to the Phoenix location (5044 W. Cactus Rd. Glendale). To add insult to injury, I left behind my personal Garman GPS in the center console of the car. When I inquired about it, no one saw it. How very convenient! Never should anyone use Thrifty Car Rental if these issues are not cleared up.

I was billed for 32$ more than my bill. When me and my friend approached the Representative for explanation he was sitting in a lobby in a customer chair and told us that we returned a day later than it was initially planned so "if you have any problems go and raise a dispute." We tried to explain him that we called a day earlier of the extension and the call center executive confirmed these late charges don't apply but he didn't even bother to listen it.
Then I pointed to him that I was billed for 2 days of late fee where I am only late by 1 day after seeing that then only he stood from the customer chair and walked to his computer to look for details and he reduced 1 day of late fee after 15 minutes of wait. Then I asked if I have an option to talk to the manager of the other day late fee. He told me that the manager sits in a different office so he cannot contact her. "If needed you can go to her and talk about it." I was really annoyed by his response so I asked if he could at least put her on call so that I can talk about it but he said she would be busy. He called his manager and went into a room and came back to me and told "BECAUSE OF YOUR EGO, SHE IS COMING OVER TO MEET YOU HERE."
I couldn't understand what's happening with him. I have never seen anyone talking like this, still I maintained my calmness and told I usually see customers being angry but I have never seen a representative being angry at the customer. When I told this he told me to STEP OUT OF THE STORE OR ELSE HE WILL CALL THE POLICE. I was really shocked to see a response like this and though there was another representative at the store she also didn't do much about it. I felt I was totally helpless and didn't take the argument forward and left the store. This shows the Arrogance of the Thrifty representatives and robbery that is being done by Thrift.

Highway robbery! Thrifty is charging me an extra $15.99 PER DAY for each day I need to extend my rental! This is in addition to the daily rental fee. Therefore, they are charging me DOUBLE because I have chosen to continue to give them my business and my money! Talk about HORRIBLE customer service! And did I mention the reason I need to keep the car is because my traveling companion is too sick to leave the hotel room, much less fly?? I explained this to then Supervisor I finally reached (at a call center in India, of course) who could not have cared less, and just kept repeating in a monotone that this was state in the fine print of my three-page contract. Mind you, it is NOT stated in the online Terms and Conditions fine print! No, apparently they only slip this in when you are picking up your car at midnight after three flight cancellations, crowded baggage claims, delays, etc., and just want to get your car and leave! I have extended rentals before with other companies and never incurred this fee. I will NEVER rent from Thrifty again!!

Thrifty Philadelphia PA Airport - Over an hour and a half to reach the counter, 15 minutes more at the counter. Finally got the car, 2 years old with 47000 miles, not in decent shape. Right wiper blade totally worn away, useless in the rain which started promptly the next AM. Bottom line, DO Not rent Thrifty.

Had a reservation with Thrifty in Tucson. Thrifty is about 1/2 mile from the terminal so the email said to use the courtesy phone by the rental car entrance and call and they would send a shuttle. Also stated that they were open until midnight. I arrived a little before 10, tried the phone, no answer, tried 3-4 more times with no luck. So used my cell to call the 800 type number listed on their email. Explained the situation to the person on the phone, she asked me to wait on the line while she called them. In a few minutes, I was informed they were on their way and would pick me up in a few minutes. 15 minutes later, I hadn't been picked up, called again different person but same act, wait on the line while the office was contacted, they'll be there shortly.
Another 15-20 minutes pass and no pickup. Gave up, very frustrated and went inside to rent from someone else. Only two open, National and Dollar, no cars at National unless I have reservation. I said I had one with Thrifty but no one answers. They inform me that Dollar handles Thrifty's rentals after 9 or 10 as they are having trouble getting help. So I go to Dollar and get my car. Why they couldn't have told me this in the email or at least have the courtesy to put a sign by the phone is beyond me. Add to the insult the car was in poor shape, interior lights didn't work and the AC was very feeble.
I tried to get in touch with Thrifty to find out why the folks on the phone had literally lied in saying they had talked to the shuttle and it was on its way. Not the remotest answer for that, I had trouble finding out where I was supposed to return the car in the end. Thrifty claimed I'd driven the car 1500 miles when I had driven more than 600. No cost to me but I assume some scam. I continued to try to find out why I wasn't supplied with correct info on car pickup after I got home. This company is unbelievable, they deny, they lie, in the end the woman told me that since they gave me the info they had, despite it being wrong, they felt they had no responsibility for what the Tucson office does. Rent from Thrifty at your own peril. They are horrible!!!!!!!

Thrifty was a disaster upon entering the building. The counter people were confused, not helpful to us or each other. After numerous mistakes and do overs (>60 minutes), we rented a Toyota of some sort. The process with insurances, trying to charge me for my wife as a driver, no maps, no directions, etc. We left. The vehicle performed adequately for a 2 cylinder motor. Unfortunately, it was supposed to be 4 cylinders! Upon return, after less than 100 mi for the 5 days, I asked to extend the rental for 3-4 hours. Juan, the desk manager, responded curtly, rudely and completely non helpful. He would not budge and continued openly hostile.
I asked him why as our trip had been filled with beautiful people in a beautiful place to this point. He said he didn't like America and/or Americans! I suggested he give us an opportunity to return his hospitality in the USA in the future. As a final insult, he demanded $3 for a water which had been offered and taken from a different young man at the counter when we arrived as they fumbled through their incompetent myriad of mistakes. This was not language, it was incompetence. Juan is as jerk, really really bad. His manager is John who I have not been able to access. ADVICE - DON'T RENT FROM THRIFTY IN LIBERIA, COSTA RICA. It/They are rude and a rip off!

Reserved car for 5 days in Albuquerque with a total estimate of about $260. Final bill was $496 - charges on bill that I was not advised of prior to renting, i.e., they charged me for a week when I only had the car for 5 days, extra chg. for second driver, etc.. Have tried to call twice today and was on hold for 15 min. each time. Got thru on 3rd try. Was told I have talk to customer service. Guess what - they are only there from 9-5 Central & no weekends. I work 9-5 Eastern. How am I supposed to talk to someone who works the same hours I do?

I explicitly said there was only one driver. I was paying but Megan ** was the driver. She gave her license information. I was charged $77 for an additional driver. I was charged $202 for insurance waiver. I said I didn't need their insurance. I had my own. There were additional charges (about 6) not explained that I did not even know about. I had expected the charge for the car to be $400. Instead it was over $900.00. Unfortunately I did not look closely at the contract until several days later. If I had complained at the time, I would have been told "Too bad - if you want the car, this is what it costs." And I would have ended up stranded without a car.

Recently, my wife and I pre-arranged online to rent an automobile from Thrifty Car Rental to use on our vacation trip to Germany. When we arrived at the Frankfurt Airport and presented our pre-rental agreement to Ms. **, the representative of Thrifty Car Rental at that airport, she refused to abide by the wording of the pre-rental agreement.
She said that if we wanted to rent the car we would be obligated to buy Loss Damage Waiver (LDW) and Theft Protection (TP) insurance coverages, both of which our pre-rental agreement with Thrifty had declared were “optional at the counter” coverages, depending on whether or not we already had these coverages through our Gold “World” MasterCard (which we did). The Thrifty LDW and TP coverages would increase our rental cost for the car we had reserved from the pre-rental quote of 402.29 euro (appx. $583.00) to over 1,000.00 euro (more than $1,450.00). No amount of logic or persuasion could budge Ms. ** from her position.
Therefore reader, please be warned: when it comes to international car rentals in Europe, Thrifty Car Rental is currently playing a heinous, wholly unacceptable game of “Bait and Switch,” attempting to extort almost three times their rental fee once they have hooked you into a reservation with them. We refused to rent Thrifty’s car and found another car with another company, but you need not put yourself through that added stress and expense. Do not seek to rent from Thrifty Car Rental in the first place: this company is not to be trusted.

Made a Thrifty car reservation for Cancun, Mexico. Quoted $130.00. I spoke with the booking person and they assured me I would not have to pay additional car insurance because my credit card covered most of the coverage and my personal car insurance covered the rest. I was charged $459.00 at the counter in Cancun; they said that the insurance was required. I was stuck. I will never rent from Thrifty again.

I just received a email of a rental car damage complaint. The lady is very rude to me and hung up on me numerous times. She would not transfer me to a manager nor explain the damage of the claim. I would like to have this investigated by the police as the damage that she describes is under the vehicle. WHO LOOKS UNDER A VEHICLE TO INSPECT.
The entire renting experience at the Calgary Airport Thrifty was a nightmare. I had a vehicle reserved and waited 2 hours for it and then when I got the car I signed for, it was a car and was dirty both inside and out and I refused it because I could not see the damage so I waited another 45 minutes for another car and it was a van and some guy just came in and gave me the keys. This van was also dirty and I complained but they told me they had no other vehicle for me until one returns at 6pm which would mean another 3 hours waiting. I told the man at the desk that I am unable to see any damage of this vehicle in the dark parkade and 'cause it was still dirty and he said he would mark it down.
I am a VP of operations for a large company and rent vehicles weekly. Since this occurred and please note that I have rented numerous times before this incident and all times prior had minor incidents, I have not been back. I have not recommended Thrifty rental services nor used it for any of our company needs. Going forward with the rude claims department call agent who offers no information about the claim, etc., I am even more dissatisfied. I would like a corporate response to this matter.

I rented a car from the Phoenix, Sky Harbor location, a Nissan Pathfinder, March 29,2014. I drove it up to Sedona that day without difficulty, however, on the 30th the transmission went out. Thrifty charged my bank card to pick it up and deliver another vehicle, they did so without my knowledge or permission. It gets worse. The van they delivered to Sedona was old dirty, dented and not drivable due to smoking smell. I said that the vehicle was not acceptable, but Thrifty refused to replace the car. I asked to speak with the Phoenix Manager. He refused and I quote, told the representative we were speaking to tell us to, "Buy air freshener and spray the interior." Not wanting to waste my vacation time dealing Thrifty, I rented from the Sedona Enterprise location and told Thrifty to come retrieve their van. A day later they did so. Now, I am being harassed and threatened with a lawsuit because I abandoned their vehicle. Interestingly, they are not able to tell me which vehicle they are referring to, the Pathfinder with the bad transmission, or the smelly, old van.

First off, the Customer Service Rep (John) at the Denver Airport was rude and impatient. He read his script like a robot, was irritated that I had asked him to re-read and explain what different sections meant and when it came to charging for the "Toll Plates", he just threw the charge on there and said it was cheaper to get it through them (without even asking me what my travel plans were). It was my first visit to Denver and everyone I talked to at the hotel said I didn't need it since I was not traveling back and forth on E470. He also added the $60.00 charge that allowed me to return the car on empty and informed me that it was better to do it this way because the gas in Denver was $4.00 per gallon. I trusted his insight but as I drove around Denver and throughout Highlands Ranch and other towns, I saw the price of gas was $3.24 to $3.45...I could not find anywhere charging $4.00. Also, the vehicle I drove had a 15 gallon tank so in short, it would have been cheaper for me to NOT pay the $60.00 at the counter. Straight and direct lying and taking advantage of a customer.
Like many, I will NEVER use Thrifty again. I called and was clear that I required a Dodge Avenger and I was assured that would not be a problem. Not only was it not available, there was only ONE vehicle (of that class) and I was told that I had no choice but to take this beaten looking Mitsubishi which was clear why no one wanted to rent it. I inquired about them offering a free upgrade and the guy laughed at me saying "no can do" since they had the one car available. I ended up upgrading...the car was nice, the inside was dirty and didn't look like anyone wiped it down from the previous renter. I ended up wiping down the car myself later. This was my first time using Thrifty...and truly the last and I will make sure to pass the word to my company, neighbors, family and friends. DISAPPOINTED. Positive note: the guy who met me to choose a car was jolly and had a great personality. The guy at the checkout booth (Robert) was a very happy and personable guy as well...but the CSR (John) needs to be reprimanded...unless that is a norm of practice and supported by Thrifty.
