I got an economy car as a package deal from Orbitz, which included hotel, airfare and car. The package itself was pretty cheap for Las Vegas. I was excited. Once I arrived to Dollar car rental place in Las Vegas, a service agent was arguing with a customer. I'm not sure what the dispute was, but the agent was extremely rude to the poor guy. Then I giggle to myself out of amusement when another guy happens to start arguing with an agent on the other line. It seemed like either their product was not good or Vegas just made them upset, the energy was just not good. Red flag but at that point, I had already paid for the package so I had to get the car.

I was barely greeted by the agent, but I smiled and put out my bubbly personality trying to make sure that our interaction was positive and not a negative one. Its Vegas and all I want is to have fun. Lucky for me, the agent didn't pick a fight with me at all. He seemed nice at the end of the transaction, perhaps pleased that I was not there to complain about their product.

I had to put in my credit card for insurance purposes, I guess. After I got my paper work completed, the guy told me to head out to the garage and someone would show me to my car. Once I arrived to the garage, a lady just told me to pick any of the four cars that were parked, kind of far from us. I chose a Mitsubishi and drove out of there. The lady didn't offer to show around the car, there was absolutely no service of any kind.

I was lucky enough to have had driven this vehicle before, as my friend has the same one. I drove out of the garage and used the car for about 4 days. I mostly just used to go to the store and that's about it. I never left the city or state or anything like that. The vehicle was somewhat dirty; it had some trash in the trunk and a soft drink lid between the drivers seat and the other seat.

I didn't care; honestly, I was just going to use it to visit a friend in the city and to transport me to the strip. I filled the tank up, which was maybe $20.00 at the most since I barely used the car. Once I returned it, I wanted a full inspection just to avoid any charges once I left. The guy that took my car was in a hurry and he told me everything look good but didn't really do a full inspection.

5 months after my trip, I decided to look at all of my summer charges as a way to see how much I spent during the summer on all of my credit cards. I noticed that I was charged $250.00 for Dollar! It was 5 months later and honestly many states away from Nevada. I was very upset but I knew that calling them would resolve nothing.

I had no proof of the condition of the car and I'm sure they could at that point state that the car was on empty and that I had scratched the car and or was filthy with vomit and so on. I saved my self the sour argument and made a mental note not to give them my business in the future. Other than that, the car never broke down and it worked very well. So product wise, I had no issues, it just seems like their customer service and billing department has too many flaws.

Rented Thrifty car on 3/21 and had to exchange the same day. We had 3 cars over a 2 day period. The 1st car had bad tires that made a very loud noise on the highway, so loud it was unbearable to even think and the noise gave me a headache. I exchanged the car in CLT (2 hours exchange process) and then drove the new rental approx 150 miles and had a flat tire. It took roadside 1 hour to locate us to only inform me it would take another hour or more for a tow truck to get to me. I informed them we would change the tire ourselves so we could get off the highway.

3/22, called roadside and asked if they could bring a replacement to the hotel as I felt unsafe driving a rental on a doughnut in the city I was unfamiliar with. They informed me if they bought me a car, I would incur the cost of towing. I declined and proceeded to drive another hour to airport to exchange the car AGAIN! At ATL airport service was terrible, representative was rude and told me to go and buy a tire for the rental car b/c they would not give me another rental.

Fed up with the entire experience and amount of time I had lost dealing with bad rental cars, I asked for his manager. The rep then told me I could return the car I was in and rent another car. Again, costing me additional monies for bad cars they had rented to me. I declined and again asked for his manager. After waiting for over 30 minutes and I went back to the counter to ask when would the manager be there to talk to me and rep informed me the manager was too busy to talk to me. I was completely appalled at the treatment I was receiving. I was not being treated as a customer, and was treated terribly by rep and manager.

After another 20 mins, the rep tells me, “Ok, my manager told me to have you complete a statement of loss and get you out of here.” Talk about rude and terrible customer service. I missed 2 events in ATL b/c of these issues. I was late arriving on Friday 3/21 and then missed a morning affair on 3/22 b/c of the car rental. I am very dissatisfied with my experience and will never rent from Thrifty again.

I have informed all my family and friends and discourage anyone to rent from Thrifty. It is ridiculous to have 2 bad cars in such a short period of time, in my opinion their cars are not checked accordingly. To have 2 different cars with tire issues is inexcusable. The third car also kept giving alerts of the same tire problem on our way home. This was a nightmare rental experience for me and my family and completely ruined our weekend getaway!

When I checked back in the two day car rental in MSP airport on March 9th 5:30 pm, I found out that my bill was double what I reserved the car for. I went into the sales counter and they had added insurance when I told them I had my own. She said I signed for it... I said, "I told you I had my own", and she said that is basic coverage and I said yes. Basic coverage means you want their insurance. I was told to leave the counter or they would call the cops. I asked for a manager and they would not give me a name or number. I called the service center several times and never got anyone from Thrifty to call me back.

I rented 2 vans for my business. I told the Thrifty manager that we needed the vans for 3-5 weeks to travel across Nebraska and Kansas to service our customers. The Thrifty manager wrote down a quote of $499.99 per week and miles covered. Several weeks after returning the vans our credit card was charged an extra $3000.00 for extra miles. The Thrifty manager slipped in a mileage limit without telling us. The franchise owner said he would check in to it and call us back. He never did despite several attempts to contact him. We will never use Thrifty again and everyone we know - business associates, friend and family will never use this rental place again. They think they got an extra $3000.00 dollars but in reality they lost 10x that amount. It does not take long in a small community for your bad reputation to ruin your business.

I rented a car from Thrifty Rental Car for his birthday and he was cited for the car not being having a valid registration. I have been calling Thrifty for months trying to get them to submit a current registration for the courts only to get the run around. The citation is correctable with proof of current registration and without said proof we will have to pay $300, which we do not have or my son's drivers license will be suspended. Each time I have spoken with someone I have been told that this will be resolved ASAP. The citation was issued on November 19, 2013, and this is now March 2014.

Rented a Impala to drive my dad to Knoxville, TN and then back to San Antonio, TX. When we got a few hundred miles noticed that the front tires had separated and had steel cords showing thru them. Took a while to get thru due to bad weather keeping them busy, when we finally did they said sorry for the inconvenience and we could swap out the vehicle with no problem. The only bad part was no 24 locations were nearby. We ended up driving in to Knoxville. At 7 am, we called back. The customer service lady said no problem, called the Knoxville location and they had a Chrysler 200 waiting on us. She had already filled them in and taken care of paperwork. Looked at all these reviews while I was trying to contact them and was very worried. DON'T BE, THESE PEOPLE WERE VERY HELPFUL, VERY NICE, AND HAD US ON OUR WAY FASTER AND EASIER THAN EXPECTED. DISHONEST & RUDE! Be careful when renting here, they have cars below legal safety standards. I was rented a car that broke down and had to pay to fix it myself. After complaining I was told to screw off! IT'S A GOOD THING I TOOK A LOT OF PHOTOS AND KEPT RECORDS! **I CAN PROVE EVERYTHING I AM SAYING - (they are not getting away with it again, I reported to BBB, AMEX and the Chamber of Commerce is my next stop). And when you call them out on their stuff they hang up on you and charge you for bogus stuff just to give you trouble.

They also bill you for things that they don't advise before you rent, like for example if you travel to some states like FL you have to pay an extra $89. When you bring the car back they hit you with a cleaning fee! Even if it's clean. The manager Jeff is very rude and make uncomfortable jokes! Stay away at all cost. I am still trying to get my money back from these people! Don't end up like me having to fight these guys in court to get my money back. Just avoid it at all cost. See other post below!

I had a reservation for a one day rental. There was a 30 minutes line to get to the Thrifty agent. The reservation said the estimated grand total would be US$ 23.50. The Thrifty agent told me the total would be US$ 120.00! On top of the US$120.00 he wanted me to pay an extra amount so I could go through the tolls that don't accept cash or credit card payments. He said it was a new law and if I did not pay that extra amount I would be fined in US$ 20.00 each time I passed one of such tolls. When I told him all I needed the car for was to go to my hotel that night and come back early the next morning, and I asked where these tolls that don't accept money or ccards were located on the way to South Beach, he showed me a very confusing map and refused to clear it up. Besides, I told him I only needed the basic insurance, since my credit card offers car insurance. He said that the only card that offers that is the black American Express. I know for a fact that my VISA card offers it, though.

To add insult to injury, after all this unpleasant process, when I went to pick up my car the Thrifty agent in the parking lot told me I would have to WAIT FOR 2 HOURS because there were no cars available! There were around 20 other people sitting down in the lot waiting for their cars too. So I went back inside for the same Thrifty agent to cancel my contract, and all he did was write "void" in my receipt, with a red pen. I asked him to print another contract saying it was void and he refused. I insisted and he said I had to go to another car rental agency look for the manager and he would do it. So I walked up with all my luggage again, arrived to the other agency, asked for the manager and the agent told me the manager was in the parking garage and I would have to take the elevator there and look for him. Then a door opened and the manager was right there (I saw his name on his shirt). The manager also said that the receipt with "void" written by hand was enough. I insisted and he printed another one. I then went to Payless Rent a car, without a reservation, and got a car for one day for $40.00 total, never passed by a toll that did not accept cash or credit cards, and got the basic insurance since they reaffirmed that my VISA credit card offered the extra insurance. I HAD THE WORST CAR RENTAL EXPERIENCE OF MY WHOLE LIFE AT THRIFTY!!

On Oct. 30, 2013, my wife and I rented a Chevy Malibu in 5440 W. Century Blvd., Los Angeles, Ca. However, around 6 PM, we had to stop because we had a flat tire. We called roadside assistance provided by Thrifty, but we had to wait at least 2 hours for them to come. When the assistance came, he couldn't do anything because the rental car DID NOT HAVE A SPARE TIRE! So, we had to wait for another hour for a tow truck to pick us up and bring us back to the Century Blvd. location. We were left in the cold out there! The driver of the tow truck drove the car inside the Thrifty garage, with the flat tire and probably caused damage to the rims. Now, we got a letter from DTG Operations, Inc (the company that owns Thrifty in Century Blvd.) asking us to pay for the damages. They shouldn't charge us for these damages because in the first place, they did not provide a spare tire for the car that we rented. We will never rent from Thrifty again.

Beware of pressure by the rental agent at airport in Tampa, Florida. They will tell you that you can't pay tolls on the interstates and that turns out not to be true. We prepaid $91.98 for a 10-day rental and used the tolls one day and noted that they were separate toll booths where we could have paid the $.75 tolls. They also pressured for extra payment for another driver (most rental car co. include a spouse driver) - that cost us $155. We were at the rental desk for 40 minutes as the agent went from one extra option to another. It was "dizzying!" The final cost was more than double the price of the original agreement. This is my rental experience with Thrifty Hilton Jumeirah in Dubai. Please read this so you will know how they work. During our holiday in Dubai, we decided to rent a car. Thanks to our hotel (Hotel Grand Excelsior) they could arrange a car rental with one of your branches (Thrifty Hilton hotel Jumeirah). So we decided to do that and we rent the car from November 12th till 14th. Everything went well. An employee brought the car and we made an agreement that we had to return the car on November 14th at 12 o'clock (instead of 10 o'clock). We also decided to rent a GPS and that was no problem.

On November 14th, we didn't have enough time to refill the fuel so the fuel gauge stripe was only 1 stripe below how we got it. But we didn't want to pay for an extra day (if we would refill the fuel we would be back after 12) so we decided not to tank. At 11.57 o'clock, we arrived at the hotel, just like the agreement we made. But the employee wasn't there so the man from the hotel who arranged this all for us (Josh) called to the branch. They said that they would be there soon. After 45 minutes of waiting, no one was there so Josh called again. Again, they said they would be there soon. Meanwhile, it was 13.30 o'clock and we were waiting for 1.5 hours!!!

We decided to give the money (660 AED) to Josh, so we could enjoy our last day in Dubai. When we came back in the evening, I saw that I received an email from Thrifty. It was the bill with an amount of 600 AED. Kind of strange the GPS of 60 AED wasn't on the bill, but I knew I needed to pay for it so I didn't give it any attention. But when we came home, I received an email with the following text: Your MasterCard has been charged 280 AED for the following: rent and SDW. I was confused, so I immediately sent an email to Thrifty Jumeirah. They respond that they didn't take any money and that they were sorry.

But when I checked my account I saw that they charged 110 AED. So again I mailed them and they said 110 AED was 60 AED GPS and 50 AED salik (toll road) charges. I could understand the 50 AED. But why should I pay for 4 days GPS if I only had it for 2 days? They also sent me a summary of the costs :

    Rental: 245 * 2 = 490aed
    Insurance: 35 *2 = 70aed
    Collection Charge = 20aed
    GPS: 30*2 = 60aed
    Salik Charges = 50aed
    Fuel Difference = 20aed

    Total = 710aed

I was surprised so I decided to call Josh and he would call the company about the 60 AED. Then I received an email from Josh: My apologies for the overcharge. I have talked to the person in charge and he will be refunding AED 60 to your account SOONEST POSSIBLE. Well, I could live with that but unfortunately, this wasn't all because on December 2th I received an email: Your master credit card ** has been charged AED 280 for the following:

    Particulars Amount
    Rent 245

    SDW 35

I couldn't believe it! Again, they took money from MasterCard? Just like they did before? And also the reservation of 1000 AED was still on my credit card. I started to become impatient. So AGAIN, I wrote an email. On December 3rd, Josh talked with the managers and he wrote me an email about that: "Good morning. I tried to call you but the phone went to answering machine. I went to the car rent and met with the managers. I told them about the disappointment they have caused and they should have by now refunded the money AED 280 back to your account. They have released the blocked amount and please check your credit statement." And I also received an email of one of the employees from Thrifty: "As discussed now, refund is processed and finally you can see the amount reflected in one week to maximum 10 days time. Thank you for your patience!"

I wrote him back to say that I was happy that I would get my money back but it really bothers me that when I wanted to return the car that I had to wait for 1.5 hours for someone from the company and because of that I couldn't refill the fuel and now I'm paying the price with 20 AED extra for the fuel difference and waiting for 1.5 hours. He answered with that with a maximum of 10 days I would have my 280 AED back and about the fuel difference a policy is. But in my opinion, you shouldn't treat your customers like this. Since when is it ok to let your customer wait for 1.5 hours? Not even apologize about that, charge the GPS for too many days, charge an extra day of renting (2 times). And besides all that till this day (January 3rd), I am still waiting for my 60 AED and my 280 AED refund!!! So please look out! I also called the head office of Thrifty (located in the USA) 2 times and I'm still waiting for answer of them.

Recently, I traveled to Seattle, Washington with my wife and daughter to attend a family social event. I reserved a car from Thrifty Rent-A-Car. We were greeted by a man named Chris who spoke English with a French accent. He confirmed my reservation, took my identification, and swiped my credit card information. That's when it all started. Apparently, his supervisor who was leaving for the night, took one look at me, and told him to tell me that I required supplemental insurance coverage because I am physically disabled. She then left, leaving it up to the agent to tell me that I needed to buy their supplemental coverage.

I told him that I didn't require any kind of supplemental insurance, since it was available free of charge when using my credit card to rent the car. He still insisted that I required it because of my physical disability. In this case, it was sheer discrimination on the basis of my physical disability. In the U.S. it could also be considered as being unconstitutional. That's when my back went up. I protested and demanded that he contact his supervisor by telephone to either ask her to return, or to allow me to speak to her over the telephone. He refused. I then asked him for the name of his supervisor. His response was, "Jeanie, I don't know her last name." I ask you, how many people do not know the name of their supervisor? I basically told him to take his rental car, and put it where the sun don't shine!

As there was no one in their office, I stormed into it to use their telephone and contact their head office. I figured that there was a 24-hour emergency number for emergencies. But no such luck. His co-worker called Michelle then came into the office, and started yelling at me that I was trespassing. I therefore left the office, while she continued to scream at me saying, "Don't go anywhere, I'm calling the police!" I then demanded my money back since I hadn't taken the rental car. They refused to refund my money, which just continued to escalate the situation. The police then arrived. I felt sorry for them, because they were getting into the middle of the dispute. When I told them what happened, I also gave the analogy of forcing someone to buy supplemental insurance merely because they were black, or female. It was discriminatory and had no logic.

Anyway, I left the scene without my refund. But before leaving, Chris said to both my wife and I that since I was disabled, they would add her as an occasional driver to the vehicle. Normally, there would be an extra charge, but they would waive this fee in our case. My wife and I didn't wish to have anything to do with Thrifty. A day after I returned home I called Thrifty Rent-A-Car. Knowing that the matter of discrimination was far from being a simple customer complaint, I tracked down the number for Thrifty's CEO. I ended up speaking to his executive secretary, and expressed my upset about what had taken place.

She took down my contact information, and shortly afterward, I received a telephone call from the local manager of their sister company. All I really wanted was a sincere apology, a refund for the car that was not rented and appropriate action to reprimand the employees who acted unscrupulously and attempted to discriminate against me on the basis of my disability. He deeply regretted the incident, and assured me that someone from their corporate offices would be reaching out and calling me. I never received any kind of call, but only a letter banning me from doing business with either Thrift, or their sister company, Dollar Rent A Car. This has forced me to seek avenues in response to Thrifty's act of discrimination based on my disability.

I rent online a car in Guadalajara for August 2013 and the suffering started from the first day, when nobody came to pick my wife and I at the airport. Then once there, I had to wait a long time for them to find a car (any car, they had none). The car was very old but we try to accept that, however, when we gave the car back, that was a nightmare: the agent responsible for receiving the car and make the check out l got the car and disappear and we had to go to the airport but he delayed one hour and half and told us that the car had some scratches, and was dirty! He wanted to get more money but we showed them the document that showed the same scratches before! They were very rude, the time was running out and we became very nervous with their attitude. I will never trust in this company again! Never.

Thrifty did get hold of me after I wrote this review, and refunded me half of the $322. They also said they would speak to the employee who had hired me the car. I was happy to get something back, which was unexpected, so I'm going to upgrade them to 3 stars.

DO NOT USE THESE GUYS. I specifically, specifically asked the girl at the Thrifty counter (San Fran airport) for absolutely no extras. Only after I'd had the car for a while did I realize she'd tagged a 'Tripsaver' (roadside assistance) fee onto my bill. At $7.99 a day, for the 27 days I had the car, it came to a whopping $322. It's just downright, in-your-face dishonest to do this without asking me

First off, we were very unhappy on how long we waited for the bus to get to the rental place. Then waited in line for half a hour to find out that it was going to be $300 more than quoted because I'm 8 months under 25, which I would like to say I drive half a million dollar prototypes for General Motors. Then after driving off the lot, it started to rain and we got wet inside the jeep because the top was not fully attached. Then we brought back the jeep an hour early to just be charged for the hour we did not use. And while we were waiting for the bus, we noticed that they had double booked the jeep to another person that they gave the jeep immediately to after washing, which they would not have been able to do if we had not been an hour early. Very unprofessional. We will not be using Thrifty again.

If I could give 0 stars, I would. I rented a vehicle over Labor Day weekend 2013. After receiving the keys and going out to the parking lot, I discovered that the woman working the counter had given me someone else's reservation by accident. No big deal. It was a similar enough vehicle that I would go with the flow. I called Thrifty from the parking lot, let them know about the mix up. They agreed to just change over the reservation and give me a new rate for the new vehicle, about $70 cheaper in total. When I returned the vehicle five days later, the man working the counter said the reservation had not been updated but that he would put a note in my file so the manager could rectify it the following day.

I called a few days later and nothing had been done. In fact, the manager told me my file had been put in storage and that the storage room was "a scary place" in the Bozeman airport basement. She would do her best to muster the courage to go into the basement and find it. Two weeks later, I called again and my case had not advanced. I offered to scan some paperwork and email it to push the process along. I sent the email. Three weeks later, I'd not heard anything and when I called to check the status, I was told Thrifty's email system has been down for (guess?) three weeks. She never got the email. Apparently they are operating on snail mail and fax machines for nearly a month now.

When I asked about the lack of communication, I was told they are very busy and that most customers are flakes when it come to follow up and so she was not really anticipating that I would send in the paperwork anyway. When I told her I would like to lodge a formal complaint, she told me I was breaking up over the phone. At this point, it's been six weeks and I'm no further along on the matter. Even if I end up getting the fair rate in the end, the cost to rectify the situation will have been terribly expensive in time and energy. Avoidance and lack of professionalism are the themes of this experience.

What a rip off. Very sneaky and unethical... We arranged our rental car with a voucher from a travel center. When picking up the car, the attendant told us that we had to purchase prepaid gas in addition to the cost of our prepaid voucher. We were charged approx. 3.99 a gallon when the price at the pumps was at approx. 3.23 a gallon. We were forced to do this or lose our voucher, so of course we agreed. Then after we agreed to pay for the gas, we were then charged an additional 20 dollars in taxes for the gas. We still cannot figure that one out, since gas is already taxed at the pump, after quoting price per gallon. Then after you agree, they tack on a huge tax. Sneaky and unethical. Come to find out, we were charged for 20 gallons of gas when car has only an 18-gallon tank and it was only 7/8 full when we picked it up. Again, sneaky and unethical. The attendant was alone and spastic in the parking garage and did not list the damage on the car. She did however sign our list of dents and damage. The whole experience made us feel dirty and used.

I had a conversation with the branch manager and nothing changed even after I explained to him the clerk did not specify the extra charge and not even asked if I want the insurance. To me this is a way of slipping extra charges without the customer agreement and something should be done about it.

I stood at the counter for what seems like an eternity because the Rental Agent was forcing me to purchase their insurance. I said that my own car insurance covers me regardless of whose car I drive. So after 30+ minutes or arguing, I was finally allowed to rent the car without the Extra insurance.

There were many customers behind me waiting and they didn't have enough Rental Agents. So we walk to the lot. The agent asks, "Oh do you know which car you rented...." WTF?!?! "Ummm, isn't it your job to know". So she calls (not radios, but uses her cell phone) the front desk to find out the details of my rental. I get my car and I'm off......I drove a total of 10 miles during the trip, from the rental office to the hotel. Then back to the rental office. So the gas tank had been completely full.

When I'm returning the car the lady who's checking me in, is completely rude. I'm waiting in line and she asks, "Oh do you have your gas receipt? Didn't they tell you that at the front desk?" "No I don't" She said, "Well you're supposed to bring back a gas receipt." I've never heard of that in all the time I've rented a car. "Because of that I'm going to check in everybody else before you then have to edit your receipt to add the 1 gallon of gas. Or you just check out." No way, so you can overcharge me more. I waited 30 min. as she slowly checked everybody else in. Save yourself time and sanity. DO NOT USE Thrifty - it's worse than crap.

After getting through the paperwork, I noticed he had scammed me into a contract that added $15 plus tax to my previous rental. I figured it was getting late and I needed to get on the road, so I just gave in thinking I was going to be okay with a slightly larger vehicle anyways. I was told I could pay cash upon returning the vehicle. After relaying my return timeframe, the agent guaranteed this.

I went outside to find a car littered with hail damage and dents, as well as an empty windshield washer tank. I went back in to a sea of people in line and the agent was obnoxious. He asked, "Is it bad?" I was angry at that point and just left. Upon return, I found out I could not pay with cash after 10pm, so my account was charged without hesitation or consideration. The man just said he couldn't do anything and charged the card, wrote the service number on the back, and told me to call in the morning. The next morning and throughout the day, customer service wasn't available.... Imagine that! I wasn't happy, but what can you do? I returned it two days later, as contracted. When I got home later that evening, I found out that Thrifty had charged my account $350! They call it a "security deposit." As a result, I have overdraft charged from my bank because there wasn't enough in my account to cover the charge. This was an emergency trip to attend my brother's funeral, so advance planning was impossible.

When I called Thrifty, their customer service department told me (via recording) that they are open only Monday-Friday. When I complained about it at the dealership (or to whomever answered the phone) I was told, in plain terms that I authorized that amount in their "terms and conditions." EXCUSE ME, but does anyone really read 20 pages of terms and conditions? I feel that Thrifty should be more forthright about this particular term and condition, but they know that would cost them most of their business. This is an underhanded tactic designed to take advantage of the public.

Thrifty is a complete rip-off and I would recommend that you do business ANYWHERE ELSE. Do not waste your time with Thrifty. You will just be as unhappy as I am, or maybe even worse. Thrifty employees were very practiced in telling me that I'll eventually get that money back "in 5 days, or so." The supervisor I asked to speak to was just as glib. Renting from Thrifty in Cancun is a major scam. I received a quote and reservation through American Airlines for $65.40 for the week which included the estimated tax and fees. Since I carry the optional Amex collision insurance, I knew I should be in good shape refusing this coverage and was prepared for a reasonable Liability coverage charge of maybe $7-$15 per day bringing my total to about $175 for the week at most.

When I got to the counter, I was told that they would honor my Collision through Amex, but I would have to sign a damage waiver and some $1,000 would be put on hold. I had no problem with that. They then said I would require a mandatory Mexican Liability coverage which brought my Total from $65.40 for the week to $330.00 for the week. I debated with them over the inflated charge, but they said they would not rent us the car without this fee. I turned and walked away and while waiting for a ride back, a very nice lady who has a desk at the door asked if we rented our car. I told her that they quadrupled my rate which was a scam. Conveniently, she provided me with a sales pitch that said if I take a timeshare tour that at the end they would provide me 2,500 pesos in coupons (about US$200 towards the rental).

I checked with the rental agent and he said yes, they would honor this and showed me other rentals that had the coupons attached. Having an 84-year-old handicapped mother and my wife and I both being seniors, we had no choice but to try and cut our losses and argue later. Taking a bus was definitely out of the question. The car was far from anything nice. It had lots of dents and scratches, the engine ran rough and it had no automatic anything (manual doors, trunk, windows, etc.), but it got us around. We took the timeshare tour which was not bad since it was a rainy day anyway and we got our 2,500 pesos.

When we returned the car we were first presented with a 45-minute wait in line (very poor service by only 2 reps so give yourself plenty of time). Our coupons were reduced in value by about 250 pesos (about $20) because of a tax they subtract before it is applied. Our cost in dollars was then converted to pesos using a loan shark conversion of 13.8% in their favor which is not used anywhere during our stay (most conversions are 12%) even in little restaurants. Our final total with coupons was about $173.00 in pesos. This is before Amex does their fees, conversions back to US$ and we pay for our $20 optional collision coverage by Amex. If I did not have my handicapped mother, I would have told them where to put their car and would have taken public transportation.

When I got home, I called to make another reservation, but this time through Thrifty Direct. I explained that I wanted full Mexican Liability Coverage on the quote and wanted a confirmed copy emailed and to be a grand total. The quote is in my hands as I type and it is $123.97 complete. With my Timeshare coupons, this would have provided me with a $76.03 credit, but knowing the scam taking place they would have found away to avoid honoring this as well. There were at least a half dozen people while I waited for our reservation that argued and walked out, so the scam is real. Do not rent from Thrifty if you are not prepared to pay 5 times the cost for a junky car. I will take this up with Amex when I get my bill.

I recently rented a car from Thrifty Car Rental through the Expedia website. I had to travel home for a funeral for my grandmother. The representative that I had was the rudest customer service agent that I have EVER encountered. There was no one at the counter at the airport location to greet the customers. There were three of us waiting. Finally someone came up to the counter. He then yelled to the back that there was "another one" waiting. Two minutes later my agent came to the counter and a minute after that, the customer who was behind me, his agent decided to grace us with her presence. My agent was rude and grouchy. She and the other agent were complaining about how we needed to hurry up because they were tired. My agent does not do a very good job explaining the details of the rental process. Most of the words that came out of her mouth were mumbled. She acted as if she had just waken from a deep sleep. She looked that way to. Her clothes were sloppy and hair messy. It was 10:30pm. She eventually handed me the paperwork and I said thank you.

The words that she uttered next were very shocking to me. She said "WHATEVER!" I replied with "excuse me." She then told me that I could go on to my car. There are so many people who want and need a job. Why this person is taken up wanted employment is beyond me. I tried to handle this situation the same night with customer service, but was transferred sever times to voice mails or some telling me that there was nothing that they could do about it and that I would have to see the onsite manager. I asked for contact information for the area/district manager and was told that this information could not be provided. I tried to contact the onsite manager for 4 days and was not able to make contact. I then called customer service back and spoke with a rep who basically told me that all the information that I was given was wrong and that I would not be able to speak with any managers and that I only needed to report the incident to him and that he would give me a claim number. He said that if the manger felt that a call was warranted, he/she would call me. He also stated that they do not normally call customers back to resolve the situation because they are too busy at the office.

The only assurance that he could give me that something would be done is his word that he would forward the complaint to the proper department for review. This was very disappointing for me. I feel that Thrifty Car Rental's customer service process is not customer friendly. The agents who work at the Atlanta Airport location are not trained properly and do not car. The managers at the Atlanta Airport do not care because their employees do not reflect that they do. I will never rent from Thrifty Car Rental again. I suggest that anyone who is looking to be treated with respect and appreciation should choose a different company to rent from. If Thrifty cared at all for customer service, they would have system in place to have someone follow up with customers so that some type of resolution could be made. This was the last thing that I wanted to have to deal with when traveling thousands of miles at a moment’s notice to pay my final respect to my grandmother.

Rented a Galant on 7/4/2013 from Thrifty Rent A Car at PBI airport and checked out the car for dings or dents. Had car for less than 24 hours, took luggage out of car and close the trunk. The rear window started to crack in thousands of pieces but stayed together like a sheet of ice and then as we drove back to the rental company caved in on the back seat. Reported right away and was given another car. Back from vacation one week later, Thrifty rent car is charging us to replace this window. I did research and there are reasons this could happen such as tiny stress cracks that are not seen with the naked eye. This was not my fault, yet Thrifty did not want to know about it and will not take any responsibility for renting a car with a defective rear window. I understand this is not a common occurrence and was quite a shock for me as well to experience this right before my eyes.

I believe possibly the intense heat (FLA), defective window from the manufacturer a tiny stress crack could possibly cause this to happen and was activated by vibration of the trunk closing. Never thought to check the windows for stress cracks which after much research cannot be seen with the naked eye anyway. I am still awaiting a resolution and I will take this claim as far as possible. If I was in any way responsible for the window shattering I would pay but I simply shut the trunk and the window shattered. If you rent a car you should be expected to get your belongings out of the trunk without incidence. So beware with rentals. Since it is not your car you take on responsibility for previous driver's activity or possible car defects from dealership.

I was told car rental would be approximate 99.00 for 5 days. I was also told car rental was at airport. Upon arrival I was transported a few miles away from the airport. After we finally arrived at car rental location I was given a different price than quoted online and also misinformed about charges. There was a language barrier and they seemed to use this to their advantage. I was told about additional insurance charge which I can understand. But by time I was done my charges where 54.60 per day for insurance alone. Add the 20.00 rental along with insurance and it came to 74.00 per day for the entry level rental (Suzuki manual transmission car very small). They told me if I returned car some of this money would be refunded.

I filled gas tank and returned car with no damage. They never refunded anything. I made dispute and thought the rental was suppose to be around 250.00 for 5 days but they did not see it my way and kept the full 433.36. I would never recommend Thrifty rent a car. They prey on people by offering the lowest price then switching when you arrive at service desk. This was my experience in Costa Rica.

I recently rented a Ford Crown Victoria from Thrifty in Orlando Florida at the airport. I needed a car this size to accommodate a family of 5 people along with our luggage. I put my family in this car and drove it to Ocala. Unfortunately I got a flat tire. When I tried to change the tire I found all the lug nuts on this wheel were only hand tight! When I installed the spare it too was flat. I attempted to call the Thrifty emergency road service line and it took 20 minutes before anyone answered the phone. They told me I was responsible for the tires on the car since I did not sign up for their roadside service plan! Really! I had to get a friend of mine to help me take the tire to get it repaired.

Further inspection of this vehicle revealed that the lug nuts on the right rear tire were also loose and the tire pressure in this tire was 65 psi, a potentially very dangerous situation. Other issues found included a squeaking and clunking noise somewhere in the fount suspension, and a hood that appeared to not latch properly. In summary this vehicle was poorly maintained and the condition it was given to me was nothing short of dangerous. Fortunately I have a knowledge base that allowed me to make this vehicle safer.

I was told that I could return the vehicle to the location I rented it from and pick up another car but they could not guarantee that I would get a replacement that was a similar size. As a result I kept this vehicle for the remainder of my stay since a smaller car would not provide me with the room I needed for my family and their luggage. When I returned the car my complaints to the management fell on deaf ears. They reluctantly reimbursed me for the $10.00 it cost me to repair the tire at Walmart but they seemed unfazed that they originally gave me a vehicle that was unsafe and poorly maintained. They did however offer me a 10% discount on my next rental. Really! I will never rent from this company again. I'm happy to get my family back safely!

Thrifty Car Rentals needs to go back to school and learn a bit of ethics. They charged me close to double for the cost of the car. Just about everything the counter person said was a lie. For starters he told me that it would be cheaper if I didn't fill the gas tank. Thrifty charged me 75 bucks for half a tank of gas. Be very careful with this company. The good deal I thought I had cost more than a full priced car rental.

Now I realized that they charge me $63.00 for less than 1/4 of a tank, when the gas price in Miami is $3.87 per gallon. I feel this is really a rip-off. I even returned my car before the time due which was at 4:44pm and it was returned at 8:30am and did not even got 1/2 price of the rate. Hope this will help other people when renting car through Thrifty.

I rented a beautiful, brand new Nissan Altima at Denver Airport for estimated $360 including taxes & fees. I arrived at Thrifty Counter very tired after a delayed & long flight, VERBALLY responded NO to agent on extra insurance coverage & yes to prepaid gas after Agent VERBALLY told me it was 22 cents a gallon cheaper than Denver gas prices (I found out later this was false information; Gas was $3.60-$3.66 per gal. and not $3.88 as I was charged). I started reading the computer pin pad terms & conditions & Agent told me I had to check accept on all pin pad boxes for rental agreement to process. When I clicked accept on insurance waiver, I (mistakenly) thought I was agreeing to waive the extra insurance, which I did not need at all.

When I turned the car in (on-time), my estimated bill skyrocketed from $360 to $600 because of the two items discussed above. My phone call the next day to Thrifty was a waste of time. They offered me $30 coupon for next rental, which I've already cancelled. I will NOT EVER, EVER rent from Thrifty again. I feel I was taken advantage by Thrifty and their misleading rental practices are despicable.

I am writing to you today to relate my latest experience with Thrifty Car Rental and to express my absolute disgust with the treatment I have received at your Buffalo Airport location. Following years of intermittently utilizing your organization for car rentals, I recently become a Blue Chip member when I was informed of the program by personnel at your Atlanta Airport location. This by the way was an absolutely wonderful experience by truly professional customer service personnel. As a little background, I could be considered a well-respected member of the electrical engineering community and have spent my 38-year career traveling globally, dealing with customers providing training to professionals within my industry as well as internal sales representatives and customer service personnel. My schedule finds me traveling somewhere in North America approximately 20 weeks/year 4 days per week. I am not your Mom and Pop go on vacation customer; I am the bread and butter 80 days per year customer that pays the bills. Guess you could say I have done this all before!!!

I took a gamble when booking my last vehicle from Thrifty, I booked a Wild Card. I was fortunate enough to arrive early in Buffalo and began my search for your rental car location, no counter at the airport?! I searched your acknowledgement e-mail and found no notation that your location was off-site. I spotted your shuttle bus and approached the driver to ask about the location and I was greeted with a grunt of disgust and a Get On no offer to assist with luggage (which always triggers a gratuity!). The shuttle was PACKED, NOT a good sign! But hey, I was a Blue Chip member and my rental process was certainly to be expedited, right? WRONG!!! Upon arrival at the counter (after delivering parking customers), I was greeted by a lobby FULL of people and two customer service personnel. Over and over I heard, "We're out of cars or this is all we have!" Had I been of right mind, I would have left and departed for the airport to obtain a vehicle from another agency (who had PLENTY of cars and several customer service personnel I was at their counters looking for YOU!!!).

Interesting to listen to your personnel interact with customers! The young man (who later served me) was almost a mute while the female continually voiced her displeasure (for all to hear) with having to be at work, "I'd rather be anywhere than here!" Believe me, your customers unanimously felt the same way!!! It has now been 2 hours since my arrival at the Buffalo airport. I have had to call one customer to attempt to reschedule my appointment (Sorry, Jim, we have to cancel!) and shuffle a few other appointments in an attempt to salvage my day. THANKS, THRIFTY!!! Now MY customers are unhappy WITH ME! My reservation called for insurance coverage on the vehicle. I verbally confirmed this with the young man who was handling my transaction, even offering up a printed copy of my reservation to ensure accuracy.

When the contract printed out, no coverage was noted. Okay, let's re-do this one. The SECOND time, there was yet another error, so we tried AGAIN! My customer service agent was growing increasingly impatient with my insistence that we do this right. Now a phone call was made to the garage. What cars do you have? Uh huh, uh huh, uh huh, uh huh (obviously 4 choices!!!) Yeah, send up that SX4! Hmmm, think I was being punished here for the incompetence of others??? Finally, the contract is acceptable. Here's the damage report on the car. If you see anything else, bring it back in and we'll note it! Well, there were LOTS of additional damage scratches and dents, so back in I go! Out we go and after pointing out the additional damages and lots of grunts and heavy sighs from your personnel, I was on my way in this FABULOUS automobile!

What has not been previously stated is the cleanliness of this vehicle, it was DISGUSTING!!! Dirt throughout the vehicle and grime on the steering wheel and shifter/signal pedals! My first two stops were to the car wash for a vacuum and to a drugstore for sanitary wipes and Lysol (direct cost to me $2 for the vacuum and $4 for Lysol) - I cannot say what occurred previously in this vehicle, but the body odor mixed with unidentifiable smells were pretty thick and extremely offensive. Despite the heat, my first hour in the vehicle was spent with the A/C at maximum (BTW, didn't really provide cold air) and the windows down so I would not carry this offending odor with me to my customer location.

    General condition of the vehicle;

    1. The turn signals intermittently cancelled often, they required manual cancelling.
    2. A/C was weak.
    3. Speedometer was in error. This was brought to my attention by one of New York State's finest. Thankfully, I convinced him to provide me with a warning (my first in over 20 years!!!).
    4. Cruise control really didn't expect it to function properly!

    5. Radio, I'll just giggle a little.

So let's talk about my experience upon returning the vehicle! Due to the high degree of efficiency encountered upon my arrival, I deemed it appropriate to arrive at your location 3 hours prior to departure of my flight (this caused me to set the alarm for 5:30 am after arriving at my hotel after 9 pm). The car was SPOTLESS upon my arrival and full of gas as per my contract (but not my wishes!). Where are the return spaces? Who knows? Where's ANYBODY? No one in sight! So I parked adjacent to the pick-up location, emptied the car of personal belongings and entered the building to obtain a receipt and return the keys. I was greeted by yet another rather unkempt young man who simply provided a blank stare as a greeting. I informed him that due to a lack of signage and personnel exterior to the building, I was attempting to return the vehicle and obtain a receipt. I received yet another grunt, a rather unpleasant glare, and was informed that he would e-mail my receipt. Unwilling to continue this encounter, I accepted his terse treatment and departed to board the shuttle bus, again no offer of assistance, not even a Good Morning!.

While awaiting departure, I noted the customer service person inspecting my returned vehicle flinging open doors and scouring the inside. The shuttle bus was approached and your employee demanded, "Did you smoke in this car?" My response was that I did NOT smoke and that the car was NOT occupied by smokers, that I was a heart patient (oh yeah, I've had TWO heart attacks in the last 4 years so smoking is strictly verboten!). His response was simply, "Well, I smell smoke. YOU SMOKED IN THIS CAR!" At this point, I exited the shuttle bus to examine the interior of the vehicle with this fine young person only to remember that I had left $15 in the console (thought I had picked it up, but it wasn't in my pocket!). He was unable to point to evidence that smoking had occurred and by the way, the console was empty. When I insisted that I was NOT allowed to smoke and offered to provide evidence of my prior heart surgeries, I received the curt reply, "I'll get another opinion, but you'll have to pay!!!"

Let's talk briefly, what this experience has cost ME!

    1. This morning, I dropped off two Ralph Lauren suits at the cleaners to attempt to remove the odor. That is a result of being inside YOUR vehicle. Cost is $45. If this is unsuccessful, the suits will have to be replaced at a retail cost of$ 2,000.
    2. Two hours of my time waiting for service at your location (I'll give you a break on my rate) - $200.
    3. Additional trip to Buffalo to complete the sales call that had to be rescheduled - $ 250 airfare, $150 hotel for one night, $65 one day car rental, $90 meals. Total is $555.
    4. Time away from my family for an additional trip. Can we really affix a value here???
    5. Cleaning YOUR car on this trip - $50 for my labor + $2 for vacuum + $9 for Lysol and wipes - Total is $61.

    6. Loss of revenue for cancelled sales call. Account potential is $100,000/year implementation will be delayed 1 months resulting in a reduction in corporate sales of $12,499.99 and a direct loss of commission TO ME of $749.99.

So, it looks like I'm out of pocket for a minimum of $1,610, a figure that could easily escalate to over $3,600. So, what happens next? What are my expectations from your firm? Well, I expect you to do the right thing!

    1. I expect an apology pretty simple really. I wish to have no further personal contact with the personnel involved in this disaster, a simple e-mail acknowledging your shortcomings will suffice.

    2. Should you decide to accept the judgment of an obviously disgruntled 20-year-old and assess the cleaning charge, it will be the end of our revenue generating relationship. Prior to doing this, I would hope that you examine the records of my prior rentals with you. Has this ever occurred before? Spend a moment and attempt to rationalize why a 58-year-old heart patient would suddenly decide to smoke. I am existing in a non-smoking world (non-smoking hotels/ restaurants/public buildings/airlines/airports). Would you like me to forward you pictures of the scars from my surgeries? How about documentation of the location of my 7 stents? Maybe the name of my cardiologist?

Bear in mind that I spend my life speaking to business people for a living one week in Philadelphia earlier this year to an audience in excess of 500. My presentations vary from the highly technical to subjects surrounding sales skills and customer service. ALWAYS included are personal examples of the positive and negative stories involving interactions with corporations such as Rockwell, Hilton, and (most probably) a new addition of Thrifty. How you deal with this matter determines your portrayal. Are you an excellent company or one that should be avoided at all costs??? Please feel free to contact me at any time to discuss the particulars of my experience. I would have called, but refused to wait in the queue experienced through your toll-free exchange!

I chose to keep the car parked and returned the car at the airport. I called Customer Service and was asked if there was a spare tire and that I had not paid for the road side assistance. I rent cars often (about one a month for travel either domestically or abroad). I used Thrifty a few times before and thought why not so I used them for my Bahamas trip, worst decision I made. The service was poor; the manager Mr. ** was no help. The cars that I was offered (three in total) were jalopies, filthy and rundown. Each car I was offered was even worse than the last and I have picture and video to prove it. The first car was dirty and the seat was a mess. The second car was even worse. However, the last car took the cake. It was filthy, made noise, shook like crazy, and the air only worked half the time. I was so worried that I would be stranded I barely drove for fear I would end up dead in ditch.

I feel this is a total breach of contract. I was promised a clean, safe car and I got a rundown jalopy instead. I spent the first part of my vacation fighting Thrifty and when I called the 800#, they were no help. I filed a complaint and I am still waiting a call back from them. Thank you for ruining the first part of my vacation Thrifty, because of your company’s incompetence. I ended up spending hours at the location and still ended up with a rundown car. Picked up a rental car at Casablanca Airport for a two-week trip. Paid by credit card slip the full quoted price. Asked to sign a second blank credit card slip just in case there are costs at the end. Unusual request, but it's a multinational company, and maybe Morocco has its own way of doing things. The credit card can always be charged at the end, anyway, even without slip -- so what's the difference?

Three days into the trip, the fuel line broke, at night, on the highway in the middle of nowhere. There was gasoline all over the engine compartment, and the gas tank was drained. We don't speak French, but we were able, with some effort, to flag down truckers, who towed us to a station. A mechanic at the station "repaired' the car, and we got a new tank of gas. Total cost was $170. We got to our hotel at 11 PM. The next morning, I checked the repair and saw that the fuel line had just come un-clipped and that the mechanic had just clipped it back in. We also contacted the rental car company, Thrifty Franchisee Connectioncar, and worried about problems for the rest of the trip. Not only were they unsympathetic to our plight, they accused us of violating the contract by having the car 'repaired'. The fuel line was fine for the rest of the trip, but we then had the misfortune of a passing car throwing a rock and putting a small nick on the windshield (somewhat blurry photo attached).

Upon returning the car to the airport after two weeks, we were immediately asked to sign (almost before I could get out of the car and before they knew about the windshield chip) an acknowledgement that the car was not to be driven on gravel roads (many of the tourist attractions in Morocco are on gravel roads). Then, as our time was running out to catch the plane, they gave us a second, blank form in French, in which we later discovered we agreed to pay the sum inserted in the blank and relinquished any rights to appeal that cost. The blank credit card slip and blank form then had the repair amounts inserted: MAD5,000 or US$600. Our credit card company looked at what we had apparently agreed to and said they could do nothing. Total cost of the two-week rental with a nominal price of $450: $1,220.

Reading the experiences of other people with windshield problems, it is probable that we may have been forced to pay for the repair in any case -- glass, tires, and undercarriage are generally not covered by the car company insurance or by credit card insurance. But our treatment when something went wrong with the car, the shady requests to sign blank forms, and the gouging on the repair cost were all outside the bounds of a reputable business. Had there not been windshield damage, I am sure they were already prepared to charge us for the 'damage' caused by an unauthorized mechanic.

We were naive and dumb in our dealing with the situations as they presented themselves. We've been traveling for 40 years, renting cars often. We aren't lawyers or very good bargainers, and frankly have depended on the companies, the hotels, the merchants we have engaged with while traveling, to be more-or-less ethical. This encounter with Thrifty is, by far, the worst travel experience in those 40 years.

I just spent almost two hours in line at the Thrifty Car Rental lot next to the Denver Airport. I assume most people traveling are like me, traveling for business or vacation. In either case, time is generally precious. We all know it will take 20 minutes to go through security at the airport. We know we have to wait 10 minutes for our bags to show up in the baggage claim. But who expects to wait two hours in a car rental line, after all of that?

The line had 20 people in it ahead of me when I arrived. Thrifty had three people working. But it actually took 1:53 minutes to reach the front of the line! When I explained that I was in a hurry and just wanted to be checked out as fast as possible (the line was now roughly 80 people deep behind me, almost to the front door), I was met with attitude. Three different times, the gentleman waiting on me actually walked away from the workstation to do other things that had nothing to do with my getting a car. When I again asked for things to speed up, the gentleman began to purposely drag out the process, asking for my phone number multiple times, starting over on the same questions, and then stopping the whole process to explain that they had a procedure that they needed to follow, and started the questions all over again, at the beginning (can you see why they were moving only three people each, per hour?).

I would have asked for the manager to report this bizarre behavior, but I WAS talking with the Supervisor, Victor. It was obvious that Victor was being paid the same, no matter how long the line continued to grow and how long he delayed everyone's travel plans that day.

I travel several times a year for both business and pleasure, with many of the trips to Denver. I have used Thrifty Car Rental several times in the past, with no complaints. Victor acknowledged that I was a repeat customer, and even started into his spiel about the benefits of joining their club, despite my pleas to expedite the check-in process. As a result, I will not be using Thrifty Car Rental in Denver anymore. Life is too short to spend it in the Thrifty Car Rental line, putting up with petty little people with attitude.

If you value your time, if you have even a modest level of self-respect, and if you believe people should not be treated as cattle, then rent from someone else. There is at least a dozen other car rental agencies all located together, adjacent to Thrifty's lot. Even if it means a dollar or two a day more, no one should have to put up with Victor and a two-hour wait for service.

Their lack of upholding Thrifty's integrity to do what is right and fair to their customers will inevitably win favor of doing business elsewhere. I am sad that they can't see how they manipulate and rob their customers. They are thieves.

In my case, would they personally pay $1,200.00 for a tire? Yeah, I didn't think so... so why should I? I do a lot of international travel and have been to the UK many, many times, supporting their struggling economy - perhaps this is what they've come to in terms of spurring-up it up! Here in America, we call that stealing. Regardless, what goes around, comes around I'm told. With acts like this they won't last, no way.

I want to inform you of unscrupulous practices at the Thrifty Cabo San Lucas, Mexico airport location. I rented a compact car there on April 18, 2013 for 1 week. The rental price of the car itself was OK. The agent Martin quoted me 3 insurance rates. I decided on full coverage with medical for $49 per day - that is the exact rate he quoted me. He told me roadside assistance is included in that price. He also advised that the prepaid gas option was a good deal, so I took that too. I was tired from the flight, and furthermore I thought I could trust him to be honest with me, but he was not. What I agreed to was the total he showed me, 9924.41 pesos, which he clearly told me was equal to $709.36. I have that in his writing on the contract.

After we left the office and I thought about the price, I realized that if the price is $709, he charged me more than the quoted daily insurance rate. Instead of the $49 he quoted me, it was approx. $66 per day. So he lied to me about that. I called him on April 20th with my concerns and he basically said "too bad, you signed it." He also lied to me about the pre-paid gas being a good deal, because he never told me that what's left in the tank when you return is not counted as a credit. So I paid $38 for about 1 quarter tank of gas. That's some great deal alright! The final ripoff was when I looked at the final charge on my credit card, it was $818.22, not the agreed upon (and already falsely inflated) $709.39. He lied to me about the peso to dollar conversion rate too. So the end result was I paid over $818 for a 1 week compact car rental.

I had hoped that Thrifty has enough concern about their clients to do something, but they don't seem to care. I have never had such a terrible experience with a car rental. These people are total ripoff artists preying on US tourists. Unless you want to pay over $818 for a compact car, avoid these clowns.

Is there a way for a car to be dented and leaving no scuff marks?

I rented an economy car from this location on 04/25/13-04/28/13. The location claims to be at SJU, Luis Munoz Marin International airport, however, it is located on the marginal roads adjacent to the airport premises. My complaint is that travelers who must take an early flight are forced to leave the vehicle at the airport for which Thrifty charges $75 + $25 to retrieve the car from the airport parking lot. This practice is clearly stated at the time of rental. However, what Thrifty does not tell renters is that the facility is closed from 10:00 pm until 06:00 am. Therefore, if a renter is taking an early flight, the car must be left at the airport, forcing the renter to pay the extra $100. I called Thrifty several times starting at 06:00, with no success until 06:25 that someone actually picked up the phone. This just happened to me and I found it to be a repulsive and miserable practice from Thrifty to make an extra $100 on poor customers that are traveling before 06:00.

Besides, since there is no sign at the airport indicating where to leave the car, customers like myself go crazy and frustrated asking everyone at the airport (no one knows anything, of course) where to leave the car, adding more frustration to the supposedly pleasant experience of renting a car for a good price. Shame on Thrifty. As for myself, I will never use Thrifty as my car rental company of choice anymore and I will share my experience with everyone I know. I will post it on the internet and by word of mouth, so people are informed of what Thrifty does to its customers, who think they are saving money renting from Thrifty and instead, they are robbed miserably.

I reserved a car online and declined all optional coverage and insurance at that time. When I picked up my car, I handed the man at the desk a copy of my reservation and said, "This is what I want." He said he'd get me right out, and all I had to do was check a few boxes and sign my name and I'd be on my way. Never did he ask or offer for me to purchase additional coverage. When I was done, he handed me a receipt I couldn't read and sent me on my way. When we returned the car, I told him I filled it with gas and he said I had prepaid the fuel. My wife dug out the receipt (which she had trouble reading) and found we were charged $728 for a car I had reserved at $176.17. No one was helpful; no one could give a hoot.

Thrifty is the worst car rental on the planet. San Juan Thrifty is the inner circle of hell. From the airport curbside to getting into our car, it took three hours and endless hassles. First, there was no van for an hour. All other car companies went by multiple times, but there was no Thrifty van. I called Thrifty and got no help. Then, the van went by but the driver refused to stop. I had to bribe the Dollar van driver to drop us at Thrifty. At the office, there was a huge line, few clerks, and every customer took about 20 minutes to process; which was another hour lost.

Then you go outside with your paperwork to have someone find your car. Everyone had to wait another half hour. Then they gave my car and paperwork to another customer. So, they had no car for me. All I got was, “Sorry, there’s nothing we can do.” Eventually, the manager appeared and found us a car. I asked for 50% discount. He gave me $14 off for half a day of vacation lost, and received no apology from anyone. This put us into San Juan rush hour, which was another hour lost. I ended up having to negotiate on-lane mountain road at night. What a great start to a restful vacation. I called the Thrifty central office when I got home for additional compensation. They said no, I already got $14 off. That's all your lost half day of vacation is worth. This was 10 times worse than my worst previous car rental experience.

If you care or not, I just wanted to let you know Thrifty Car Rental ripped us off. Our $89 rental cost us $242.33. We did add an additional driver for $44. They took it upon themselves to add insurance which we declined for $55.96. Then they charged us $41.96 for a toll road pass we weren't expecting or wanted. They told us any tolls we had would be added when we turned in the car. We probably had $5 in tolls. Their agent quickly ran us through a process of signing and initialing a small credit card reader type device, telling us "Initial here showing you decline insurance. Sign here that you will pay tolls when you get back." I know, shame on us for not reading what we were signing but trusting the agent to be honest. Btw, the internet is flooded with similar complaints and additional complaints.

I was aware that you can only rent for 30 days and not extend, but I was told in no uncertain terms that if I did not return the rental ASAP, they would report it missing and I would risk being pulled over at gunpoint by the police. I am not sure why he thought I wasn't going to bring the car back but that seemed a little over the top for a late reservation! I returned the car ASAP, paid the bill and asked to talk to the manager. Surely, they would want to know someone in their office was out of line! But no, she didn't care and even asked me what the problem was. I'm never going back!

It was terrible service! We booked and paid online for an SUV. They didn't have one at their main pickup location at Calgary airport. They gave us a lower priced car, without any refund. Their attitude was that of indifference to customers. The line at the pickup site was not long - 2 customers at the counter and 2 more in line before us. Yet, it took over 40 minutes to get served. None of the other car rental agencies had any line up. And after the long wait, they did not have the car they had sold us online, and wanted to give us a lower-grade car without a refund. They made me come back to their airport the next day to get the car I had booked (an SUV), and made me wait 2 hours before I could get the car I booked.

Overall, this wasted a day of my vacation, and a day of my car rental (again without refund). The staff was slow as molasses. They obviously had oversold, and were using the tactic of making people wait in line as long as possible for their cars (since they didn't have enough). Since we had prepaid through the internet via a third party, there seemed little we could do. I will never book with Thrifty/Dollar again. They had bad corporate attitude. They cheat you by selling what they don't have, and waste your precious holiday time by making you wait around.

Now I have rented at Denver Airport with Enterprise, Payless and Fox; all had outstanding service and just sent us the bill for the actual toll road usage, usually about a total of $15 for getting to the airport and back. Lesson: don't be deceived by Thrifty's low rate - they’ll nail you later. Use Enterprise, Payless and Fox who have great service and fair pricing!

We rented a car from Thrifty in Cancun, Mexico. When we reserved the car, the price quoted was $166.89 for the 9 days we would have it. When we went to pick up the car, they told us we must take out their insurance even though my husband told them we had insurance that covered us on any car we drive. They didn't care. They said we must take their insurance or they wouldn't rent to us. It was night time and we were in Mexico, so we took the insurance (to the tune of $24 per day) to get the car. They went over the car with us before we left to mark down any nicks and dings; however, what we didn't see until we were already quite a long ways away from the airport that the passenger side mirror was broken. We didn't want to turn around and drive back so we figured we would just talk to them when we returned the car.

When we returned the car, they saw the broken mirror and, of course, said we did it. I told them we did not do it and that they had it turned down when we got the car (I believe purposely so we wouldn't notice it) and that we did not break it. I was treated extremely rudely and was told we would pay for the mirror! They added $400 to our bill for this mirror that we didn't break! The total then came to $737.80. We were treated very rudely both when we picked up the car and also when we returned it and were grossly overcharged. Then to top it off, when I got the credit card bill, they actually charged me $809.20, even more than they said when I signed the bill! I have never in my life been treated so badly by a car rental place and also ripped off so badly. I will never rent from Thrifty again and I hope my review stops others from renting from them also.

Not being aware of this, I chose to decline Thrifty's very inflated $7 day tolls pass on my return trip.

I was not able to physically pay the tolls and I discussed this with the desk clerks. When I returned to the car, I was given no directions as what to expect or how to avoid what actually happened, for maybe $5 to $7 worth of toll charges. He asked us at the pickup if we wanted more than one driver but never said there was a fee for that. I called back to the office & was told to go to another Thrifty store in the area, so I did. The lady who helped me at Ft. Myers, Florida was very helpful & reversed $60 of the charge & told me to explain to the Sanford office upon return & they should refund the additional night charge. Then I checked my credit card charges & found that what was supposed to be a bill of $161 ended up being $308. I called in & was told that it was additional tax charge in Florida that was legal. I told the lady no agent ever explained that us.

He said, "Well, when you were asked about additional drivers & he took your license, you should have known there would be a charge." He said he would not reverse any more of the charges. Then he said that as far as the tax, that was nothing he would do anything about. I told him that his reps should be explaining better & he said that the agent, Curtis, had 20 years of experience. He offered me some coupons for future use & we told him to keep them; we were never doing business with them again. He turned around & walked away like a mad little kid. I rented a car from Thrifty at the Miami International Airport in November 2012. I was offered a variety of upgrades, including a toll pass, for $7/day or $36/week. I declined the toll pass because I know that tolls in Florida are pretty cheap. However, I was not told by the Thrifty agent that there is a $15 fee for each toll the vehicle passes through and that many of the tolls in the Miami are toll-by-plate systems that require you to pass through the toll and receive a bill at a later date. In other words, you cannot pay the toll at the toll gate because there is no toll gate. Therefore, consumers are forced to either pay the ridiculous hyper-inflated fee for Thrifty's toll pass or you may end up with a surprise bill in the mail for a toll of 0.25 cents and a fee of $15.

How is this legal? In my case, I received seven 0.25 cent charges in one day and $105 worth of administrative fees. The part that is even more offensive is that all seven of my toll charges totaling up to $2.00 took place on the same day, which means that Thrifty received only one bill from the toll-by-plate service. Thus, why am I being charged seven administrative fees for one bill? Furthermore, Thrifty customer service is awful and refuses to reverse any charges; therefore, I am currently disputing the charges with Visa.

I sent Thrifty a letter. I sent two people from the corporate office the same letter. Here it is: The rental experience I had was so awful. I am writing you because I have not gotten any real help from your representatives in the United States or in Dominican Republic. Before I start, I have rented a car before from Dollar. The car was in good shape with minor damage, but they try to rip me off with the insurance. But I have to say when I got back to the United States, Dollar handled it very well and reimbursed me the overcharge. The overcharge was $14.00. I appreciated that they were quick in helping me with that matter. I also did not realize that Dollar and Thrifty are the same company, but the customer service is the complete opposite.

I made my reservations online with Thrift Car Rental because you offer deals if a person makes their reservations through you and not through other companies that offer your services. I got a very good deal of $166.38 for 8 days. I received a 5% discount for making my reservation online with your company for a rental in a Latin American country. But when I returned my car, they charged me the regular rate. I even printed out the confirmation showing the price with all the taxes added, and they said they will look into it. They made the excuse that online, the taxes are not added. I printed out my copy of my confirmation to them and showed the taxes were charged in that total.

I contacted my credit card company to dispute the charges and they did not get any fee back either. The charged was $192.77, leaving an overcharge of $26.39. They gave me a car on September 29, 2012. I had to return it two days later, not because of all the damage on it, but when I drove it, it sounded as though it was going to fall apart. Then they gave me a little larger car, which had even more damage on it - scratches and dings throughout the car. I understood that third world countries rental cars are much older than our rental cars in the United States. When I returned my car on October 7, 2012, not only they did not honor the price that thrifty promised me in my reservation, but they charged me for damage already on the car. In addition to that, they charged me over $400.00 for scratches already there that can be removed for less than $100.00.

I pointed out the damage to them when I picked up the car around 9:30PM. There was a dent and then scratches on the left panel above the tire. The man said he noted it. They claim that only the dent was there before, but you can clearly see that the dent led to the scratches. Now I was told that they do try to rip you off in the Dominican Republic, but there is no justification of charging Americans fees when the vehicles are never fixed. They are just pocketing the money. If they were using the moneys to fix the vehicles, why are they so damaged? The car I was driving had more than 20 areas on it with damage. The reason why I am sending you this email is because I read that you were the person/persons that could help in this matter. I have received no help from anyone; just people representing you, trying to steal money from me. Your international department never got back to me about this matter.

Also, I am a high school math and science teacher that saved up for this trip to take on my birthday. These additional charges caused my credit card to be overdrawn. Now I have more charges to pay. The unprofessionalism I had to deal with did not help either. Your employees asking for my personal information so they can have a date with me - I was done after that. I will wait for your reply and your help. Thank you for taking your time in this matter. I still have not gotten any fee back from Thrifty. Last week, I reported them to the BBB.

Be wary of renting from Thrifty in Seattle. If you do not pay for their electronic toll payment option at over $10 per day and travel over the Evergreen Bridge, you will certainly receive a $15 charge plus the cost of the toll for each transit. You cannot pay cash at the bridge. Per Thrifty's Traffic and Citation Processing team member, Steve, you cannot contact the toll authority website or toll free number and pay with a credit card for a car registered to the rental company. That's the way the process works. Once you go over the bridge without the electronic toll box, you are on the hook to Thrifty for the toll and their fee. The rental contract one signs says so.

Thrifty, for their part, will not accept responsibility for informing consumers of this situation. Their position is that they offer you the box and if you decline, that's your problem. We did not know that there was no cash option at the bridge when we reserved the car or when we picked it up. We did, however, inform Thrifty at the rental counter upon return. The agent gave us a piece of paper with process instructions that included a website and a toll free number to call. We called that number and attempted to make payment. We told the agent the license plate for the car and the time of the bridge transit. We were told that the payment would be processed. Four months later, Thrifty billed my credit card. They will not waive the administrative fees. They do not make exceptions; neither do I. Adios, Thrifty. I thought I got a great deal when I made a reservation for a minivan for $209/week from Thrifty. My $209 rate quickly turned into $488. After standing in line for over 20 minutes at the agent counter (only car rental agency with a line at the time), I quickly figured out what was taking so long. The agent wasted a lot of my time trying to get me to upgrade to a much more expensive SUV, which I told her from the beginning I didn't want to pay more. Then she proceeded to tell me that if I didn't purchase their Pass 24 for $41.99, it would cost me $15.00 each time I went through a toll - which I found out later was a complete lie.

But the real kicker came when we turned the car in at the end of the week. At the suggestion of the Thrifty agent, my husband and I specifically opted to pay upfront for a full tank of gas at the rate of $3.56/gal. When I saw my final receipt, I was charged $153.29 plus Florida tax for 3/4 of a tank of gas. I immediately called Thrifty when I got home and was told that because I declined the prepaid fuel option (which I didn't), I was to be charged their premium amount of $9.29/gal + tax. They said they couldn't go back and undo the charge, but they would send me some coupons to use for my next rental. Like I would rent from them again!

I wish I would have thoroughly gone through the printed rental agreement before I left the counter. But unfortunately, I trusted that the agent got things right. Plus I felt rushed because of all the angry people waiting in line behind me. In all my years of traveling and renting cars, I have never had a rental company not try to make things right. Their philosophy was too bad. That's really great customer service Thrifty!

There wasn't a single customer we met there satisfied with their service, and two guys even asked us for a ride rather than be so insulted by the employees there. Worst of all, the fuel gauge was broken in such a way that it read full when it was only half full. So, the tank was half empty when we got it, but we were charged for a full tank. I'm not saying they did this on purpose, but it's hard to imagine how that would happen and how whoever filled it for us would know to stop just at the point where it would look full but would actually be half full. While waiting to get the ticket, another agent shared with me, "Well, the car has been sitting for several days. We didn't know about the tires." I told her that the car should have been checked prior to my arrival and definitely prior to me leaving the lot. Then when I got to the gate, the gate would not lift, so again I had to go back to the counter, again! After 45 minutes, I finally got on the road to my meeting that I was now late for! I made a reservation for Dollar Rent a Car for $45.79 (including surcharges and extra time) for a midsize vehicle to be rented from noon to 3 pm. The line to Dollar was very long and we were in Las Vegas to attend a funeral so we wanted to leave the airport asap. My sister went around the corner and saw Thrifty and talked to the CSR, who said they "were the same company and we'll match your reservation."

We showed the reservation and she set it up, printed it (on teeny, tiny paper the size of a grocery store receipt). Yes, it was the same price, but she had failed to put the correct time for return (3 pm). The funeral was not until 10 and our flight was at 4:55, which we had explained why we wanted the 3 pm time. We returned the car around 3:15 and we were charged a full day charge/surcharge (another $75). So that was for 26 hours, about 30 miles (gallon and a half when we filled it) of mileage and about $150 for a midsize.

The managers at Thrifty said they were "indisposed" and refused to talk to me. The phone number they gave us was not open until Monday; and when I called them on Monday, they accidentally hung up on me when the call transferred from music to answering. The CSR I was kicked up to when I informed the original person that I had a dispute on a charge said that I signed the receipt and so it was valid. He (Robert) said that he would not escalate it and I could not talk to his boss and the matter was fully closed. I told him I had the original reservation that showed the hours and that we showed it to the agent. Robert said the fee was matched (I said it wasn't because our reservation clearly showed 3 pm return time). He said, "Thanks for calling."

I would not mind paying extra for going 15 minutes past 3 pm (a $2.60 charge on my Dollar reservation). I do not like paying $75. My husband flies for the government and said he had never been treated this way and he expected that at least part of the charges would be waived. It was a difficult time to be there and this certainly did not help.

I went to Thrifty to pick up the vehicle that had unlimited miles and was told, "You can't have this vehicle at that rate because you are taking it out of the area." I had reservation numbers, confirmation numbers but in Charleston, South Carolina at the Thrifty Car Rental on Montague Avenue, they turned me down on the day of pickup, but wanted to place me in another vehicle at a much higher rate. Avoid Thrifty in this city. They are a franchise operation and they do whatever they want, I'm a very disgusted and dissatisfied customer.

I used Thrifty in Sydney - Alexandria few weeks ago. When I returned the van, I was never told that I need to pay for tolls as I expected those will be just debited from my card accordingly. However, one month later, I received two tolls of $5 each plus admin fee of $10 each (i.e. the tolls that cost total $10, they cost me now $30)! If Thrifty told me I need to pay those myself, I was going to do that straight away and avoid admin fees. Anyhow, that is not all. My credit card was debited for $35 and $15 on the same day by Thrifty! I asked them why did they charge me and they said that this is a charge for forwarding me the toll costs! How arrogant is that? Now tolls that cost only $10, I am paying $80! I would highly recommend to go to any other rental company but Thrifty. Such a poor customer service, not responding to emails, not calling back on phone. Just disgusting!

Consumers, beware! Before you rent a car from Thrifty/Dollar read my story: I took a trip around the States. While I was in Florida, I drove on some roads that collect tolls electronically. I was not aware of that - it was my first time ever driving in Florida. In any case, Thrifty received a notification from Florida that we had failed to pay 4 tolls ($1.00 each). Thrifty did not send me a notification of the charges, and they decided to post a $64.00 charge on my credit card account. So, I was supposed to pay the state of Florida $4.00 in unpaid tolls and $60.00 to Thrifty for what? According to the customer service representative I contacted, I "authorized the company to charge me a $15.00 fee per missed toll when I signed the rental contract." We wrote back in English, saying that we did not understand why they sent us a message since we have reserved a car from Thrifty. We arrived at Kastrup Airport on July 4th and could not find a Thrifty desk. We then asked Sixt about Thrifty. They said that Thrifty was a broker and they reserved the car for us but that their reservation was cancelled. We explained our side of the case and said that neither Thrifty nor Sixt informed us that they work together so why would they cancel our reservation.

There were three extremely unfriendly ladies at Sixt's Kastrup branch. One of them found our reservation and said so. She was pulling out a key from the drawer and she talked apparently to her boss (Michelle). Michelle talked to them in Danish and she went back to her desk. The other lady said that they did not have a car for us. We insisted to make a call to Thrifty's phone number we had. That number turned out to be the office of Sixt at the Copenhagen city center. They said that they had a car for us but we should go to Vester Farimagsgade 33 to pick up the car. Being tired after our flight, this was a big inconvenience for us to go there by metro with our suitcases. It was our first time in Copenhagen but we managed to find out how to buy a ticket, figure out where to get off the metro, and go to this office. While in there, we were asked to pay 60% more than the price we were guaranteed.

We said that the airport staff was able to locate our original reservation. Eventually, Loise ** talked to the airport office and she was able to find our original reservation and she honored it. We had a sigh of relief since our one week vacation in Denmark was saved! We were grateful to Lois **. Refund of Damage Charge of Car Rental: I am writing this letter to file a complaint about Thrifty Car Rental in San Juan, PR. I rented the first car on 02/27 to 03/01/2012. Then, I rented another car on 03/03/2012, returned on 03/07, the Rental Agreement/File #: **. On 03/03, when I picked my car at the location near San Juan Airport, there was a young man, who spoke limited English, drove out a while Toyota first, there were too many damaged spots on the body of the car, so he had to change another car for me. He marked the damages on the car on the slip, and handed to me to sign. He checked the car and handed the slip to me to sign again when I returned the car.

The agent in the front desk shows me the bill is over $300. I was wondering that my rental reservation was only $93.46. Then, the agent showed me the yellow slip I just signed. I saw there was a circle on the right corner of the rear bumper. I told her right away that the damage was original ones. I remembered it when I picked the car, and I also pointed it to the young man. The agent insisted that I had signed the slip. I asked their supervisor to handle this problem. He went to take a look, and told me that was new damages. I asked that we should have somebody from an insurance company to check it. The supervisor replied that there was nobody from the insurance company is available. The agent asked me to sign the paper again, it showed over $400 now. I refused to sign it and left.

I am a travel agent, traveling often, renting cars and vans so many times, and never experienced this kind of problem. First, I never see so many (countless) damages/spots on single car at any location of any major car rental companies. Any cars with too much damages/spots should not be rented, or it causes problems easily. Secondly, the agents who check our return cars, even did not tell me anything, just let me sign in the dark. I thought that was due to his language barrier. In contract, all other agents who inspect my returned cars always indicate that if there is any problem. Actually, I had an incident three years ago with Thrifty, in LA Airport location. The agent pointed the damage, and completed all the paper work properly. The repair bill was sent to me after the damage was estimated by a professional technical agent.

Also, I do not think that the supervisor handled this properly. He did not listen to my statement at all, the first charge of over $300 showing, even before any other person took a look at the spots. Then, he refused my request for having an insurance person to inspect the spots. Finally, he changed the charge to me at over $400 without any inspection or estimate by a professional person. The fact was that: the few spots on the right rear bumper were original. I was not responsible for it. I requested that the Thrifty Car Rental Company in San Juan remove the charge, keep the rate offered to me when I booked the reservation, which is $93.46.

I learned my lesson from this experience. Meanwhile, I really think that the management (the maintenance of the inventory, the process to handle the car checking out/in and incidents, etc.) in that location needs to be improved, or it could damage Puerto Rico’s image. I feel hesitant to bring my clients to San Juan for this unpleasant experience.

The original charge shown on printout from computer is $539.47. I did not opt for insurance or any other charges except, fuel $83.65 ($4.78 x 17.5). Total, $623.12. I was charged $636.37. When I complained after returning the car, I was told "Too bad, that's the way it is." So what happened here is that I was charged tax on fuel, which is already taxed by the government. As it turned out, all over Kauai, the fuel was $4.71 and she told me yours was cheaper than anywhere on the island. Not complaining about that, just the overcharge on tax that should have not been added in. I feel you owe me $13.25.

We recently rented from Thrifty at San Francisco Airport and returned it to the same place (where else would we return it to, right?). We were in a little bit of a rush and did not check the receipt until we got home. We called and were told that the drop fee is for dropping the vehicle at a different location than we picked it up. When I stated that this was not the case, she looked it up and said "Oh, the agent entered SFD, not SFO." We will have to send it to corporate to investigate and that takes 5-7 business days. Meanwhile, our credit card is accruing interest on that $500.

My question is what is there to investigate. The airport code SFD is for an airport in Venezuela! Did they feel we may have rented their car and drove to South America? Today, I called customer service back and asked to speak to the person directly investigating my situation. She stated that they were still waiting to hear from the facility, but if they did not hear from them by tomorrow, she would reverse the charge. I asked, if it's that easy and you don't have to hear from them to reverse it, just do it now. No, that's not company policy sir. I then asked for the CEO's name and e-mail and wrote him. In that time, I checked my e-mail and the representative had e-mailed back, saying she was reversing the charge.

If Thrifty does this just 10 times a day over the whole country, that works out to $1.8 million a year that they collect interest on. So they will reverse the charges (of the people who catch them), but in the meantime, they are smiling all the way to the bank. What a scam! Check your receipts from now on!

Warning! Thrifty Car Rental is a thief! I rented a car from Thrifty Car Rental. I reserved the car on the internet a week before I left on vacation for $148.00. When I arrived at LAX, I went to pick up the car and the sales clerk at Thrifty proceeded to do my paperwork and he charged me $521.00 and I said no! It’s supposed to be only $148 and he shows me a sign and the sign said, “A hold of up to $400.00 may be put on your debit card.” He said, “When you return the car, you will get the money back.” I have never rented from Thrifty Car Rental. I always use Alamo (a great place). Big mistake! When I got back to Thrifty’s to return the vehicle, he handed me a ticket that showed an amount of $521.00. So I asked to speak to the manager. A little girl, about 18 years old, came out to hear my complaint.

When I explained it to her, she said, “I am sorry, you signed the paper work and you asked for one million dollars worth of insurance.” I told her that the guy at Thrifty told me that the price he charged me in the beginning was a hold of up to $400.00 for using my debit card. When I arrived to rent the car, the guy did ask me if I wanted insurance and I told him no. I was explaining my problem to the manager and she told me I had to leave the building because the other customers were hearing what I had to say. I then asked to talk to the guy that rented the car to me when I arrived and she said the guy would not come to work until 3:30 pm; of course, my plane was to leave at 2:50 pm. So now I am in line at the airport trying to call the manager at Thrifty Car Rental and they keep asking me what my problem was. I explained my problem and then they pass me along to someone else about 6 times just like the credit commercial. I end up with Peggy and she hangs up on me.

Before they hung up on me, I told the manager to go back and review the camera in the building at Thrifty Car Rental. It will show the guy asking me if I wanted any insurance and it will show both my wife and myself saying no. I also asked the manager if the guy who rents the vehicles out gets a commission off the insurance money. The manager told me he could not discuss that with me. My question is why would anyone need a million-dollar insurance plan when driving a Chevy Impala?

You’re taking a trip. You go online and request rental car quote for a car at your destination, request a full size car and see the words full-size car like a Chevy Impala or similar. When you get to the car rental location, the car is a mid-size smaller car but wait, you were quoted and are paying for a full-size car. Here is how it happens:

Clearwater Transportation LTD runs Thrifty Car Rental / Dollar Rent a Car at Austin Bergstrom Airport Texas. When they get car rental request for a full-size Car Chevy Impala, they give you a Chevy Malibu, Toyota Camry or Nissan Altima. All are listed by the manufacturers as mid-size vehicles. How do you get less than what you were led to believe you’re paying for? I asked them and here is their answer: There will always be a reference vehicle and will state or similar due to the fact that different locations runs different size, makes and models in any given category. When you book a reservation, we do not make any guaranty to a specific make, model or exact specifications.

The rental company can magically resize a vehicle from what the manufacturer has stated its size as mid-size to the new full-size. So what is next? You order a full size 12oz steak dinner and get an 8oz smaller version and are charged for the 12oz because that is all they have and that is what they call their smaller steaks here the full size steak dinner.

How can a car rental company advertize car rentals of mid-size cars as full-size? The secret is in what you call it. I was told by that car rental company manager, you better contact the renting location and find out what that company runs in it size class. So you can’t believe or trust in what is advertized on national car rental websites. You have to call the company and ask them, so what do you call a full-size car at your location. What is this new version of the shell game? Car renters beware. You may not get what you paid for, trust no one, verify and then if they are playing the word game, go to someone else. Your money is good at the other guy’s store.

Poor customer service and handling of accident: I recently used Thrifty rental car for the first (and last time). A nightmare would be the best way to describe it: Reservation was not on record and company seemed to have outsourced the rental. Car was finally brought to the hotel, but contract was not really fully explained (major problem later). Car turned out to be pretty beat up (inside looked dated and the mirror adjustment handle on the driver's side didn't work), hardly newer model shown on their website. After an accident occurred, they never spoke with me initially at the accident site on March 30th. They told me that since I had signed the contract, I was liable for the excess even though I had questions about the other driver's liability. She made little or no effort to avoid hitting me as she actually forced her car to pass on the right after I had pretty much completed turning. Also strangely enough, the police were never called.

Thrifty staff brought an interpreter to the meeting (Where was she when the initial reservation was made?). But she only created more problems, with her and the staff member insisting I had signed a contract with them. They stated the police didn't need to be called, even though the Thrifty website recommends calling them. The woman told me that no rental car company offered a reduction on the liability access, which turned out to be a lie since Avis offered to reduce it to about 1/3 of the amount of the collision bond.

I complained to the company by email, but their website indicates a complaint will take up to 21 days to be responded to. Nice, since the credit card will be debited by then. I received a damage report from the rental car company by email and asked for a translation and also asked if it is usual to only get one mechanic's estimate (in the US, you normally need at least three). Bill was rendered in French, scanned copy only. I tried calling their customer service. The company has no international access number, only a 1-800 number for customer service (I live in Japan). I called the reservations number and was transferred to customer service automated call waiting message and got tired of waiting after 20 minutes. I strongly recommend to never use this rental car company. I don't know how they claim they are an international company.

I booked online at Thrifty, a car rental in Italy. The total amount with basic insurance was 179.66 euro. For our surprise, once we gave the reservation code, passport and driver's license to the representative in Italy, they told us Thrifty has gave us the wrong price, the correct would be 235.80 euro. Also, they said Thrifty is aware of the problem, so I suspect this is going for a while.

I want to warn everyone about this trap. Beware, that the rate they display is much less from what you will have to pay when getting the car in their Linate Airport Office. I contacted Thrifty Head office but they said they could do nothing, because that Italian office is independent. But if they are independent and the main office cannot guarantee the correct price, they should warn the customer that the displayed fare is not what you would end paying, they will give the price they want at the office! For customers, that plan ahead and try to save. That is a trap once you get to the office, what other option would you have? Pay full balcony fair in some other trusty company? So here is my tip, do not rent with Thrifty if you go to Italy. Go with another known and respected company.

This should have been done before or while the Shuttle was gone to pick us up at the airport. They were not short-staffed, as when we arrived at Thrifty, there were 2 employees at the counter (including the shuttle driver) and two other employees and a trainee! The car had so much snow on it that they were unable to tell if there was any damage to any part of the vehicle.

When returning the vehicle, we locked a cell phone in the car and realized it after we dropped the keys in the drop box. There was no emergency number of any kind left/posted that we could call. We dropped the rental car off at 6am. We had to wait until Thrifty opened that day at 1pm to call, and at which time, we were already back in Yellowknife.

The employees at Thrifty found the cell phone and called us after I had already left a message. I asked the employee to Express Post the cell phone to me and that I would even pay the postage! That was ten days ago, and I called today to see when the phone had been sent. They said that it hadn't been sent yet and that they didn't know why. Today is Wednesday, Friday is Good Friday, and Monday is also a holiday. Therefore, I will not get the phone until Tuesday. Also, if I had not called Thrifty looking to see when the phone was sent, how much longer would it have taken for the phone to be sent?! We are very disappointed and frustrated with the level of service that we received and will most likely not rent from Thrifty here on out.

My card would not authorize that charge; however, all other rental fees were covered. I called Thrifty numerous times and spoke to representatives with very nasty attitudes who would not let me speak to a supervisor. I asked for some kind of help for a loyal customer. I said I would even pay $100.00 for the tank of gas. They all said no and that I had to pay $190.00 or remain on the "do not rent" list.

We stated that we were going to Loveland and back and would not be doing much extra driving, but the agent assured us we would use approximately 1/2 tank each way, not being familiar with the area we prepaid. When we returned the car, we had used only a little over 1/4 of a tank, which we pointed out to the woman checking the cars in. She said we would have to speak with the people in the office, so we went back inside to ask what could be done to rectify the situation, as we had obviously been given incorrect information.

We were told that we should have come into the office before checking the car back in and the only thing they could offer us now was to refund the prepaid amount and charge us to refill the 1/4 tank we had used, at $8+ per gallon! As the agent pointed, out it would probably be a "wash", financially. It is not a huge amount of money that was involved, but we were knowingly lied to and will never rent from Thrifty again.

The "gentleman" who had rented the car to us came in while we were discussing the problem and when we asked him about his less than honest estimate of gas consumption he said he was not on the clock and walked out of the room. I know we should have taken time to research distance, miles per gallon per type of rental, etc. but I did not expect such outright dishonesty, apparently with the blessing of management.

They were thread patterns made to whip around the autobahn. So if it's a law, fine--but I'm not paying for something I was never given. Maybe their terrible company put in the fine print that you also needed to ask for the tires after paying for them.

Mechanical issue #1: The check engine light came on and I found out there was no oil in the car. I know this sounds weird, but you need to have oil in the damn car for it to operate. There's no manual in the car so I take a few minutes to try to figure out if there is any special oil that needs to be included. All the oil cap says is "BMW recommends Castrol." Awesome, because that helps. I finally decide that it's probably standard synthetic and go in to purchase oil. After comparing a few I find one is diesel and one must be not diesel. I purchase that one for a lovely 17 euros and fill that car up.

Vehicle maintenance issue #2: Still worried I put the wrong oil in. Sure enough the check engine light comes on again but this time it’s red instead of yellow, which means bad news. So now I'm scared ** of the car seizing up (for the second time) because I put the wrong oil in. While driving in a slight panic I am still able to figure out how to give me a code on the computer and it says “CC-ID 63” because I have a ** clue what that means. So I turn on my data on my iPhone and start to google it (nice $23 charge in service for that one). Turns out it’s no tire pressure. So first no oil and now no air. Does anyone even review the cars before giving them to the customers? So I go off the highway for the nearest town and fill up on air. I was told that since I signed a contract, there's nothing they will do for me. So fine. I got **. But I will never rent from Dollar or Thrifty again.

Thrifty charged me $25 for a 50-cent toll in "Adminstration fees" times two, means we had $50 in fees for a $1 toll. I'm sure they had a legal right - fine print somewhere in their long contract. That is my complaint - that they are taking advantage of consumers who are not going to bring their attorney and spend 35 minutes reading the fine print in their lengthy legal agreement, and allow the company to take advantage of consumers the way they are. The government should not allow such excess fee! Or the company should have regulations on making sure they are displayed so that consumers are aware.

The rate I was quoted was $10 a day. I have collision coverage through my credit card. When I came to the counter, I was told that by Israeli law, I had to take out the CDW and TP coverage from them. This added $119 a week to the rental price was making the total cost more than 250% of the original quote.

In addition, there was no way to contact the rental company upon arrival other than using a pay phone. Since I had no shekels, I couldn't call them. I had to take a taxi which got lost and I paid almost $20 for the taxi. Then, I was charged $27 for transportation to and from the Thrifty office by Thrifty even though I wasn't able to use their service when I arrived. They also charged about $13 for billing me the toll fee for the toll road. If you are using a toll road in Israel, there is no way else to pay it, so it is a mandatory fee unless you stay off the main highway in Israel.

It would have been nice to know this in advance of agreeing to rent from them. Other firms such as Hertz charge less for this service.

In total, it was a very bad experience. I believe other rental companies do the same in Israel. Be careful. The original quote was about $290 and the price out the door excluding the toll fee was $729.10.

Buyer beware. I rented a vehicle from Thrifty at their San Juan, PR location on the week of the 16 - 23 November 2011. I had made the reservation via Travelocity. During the initial check in, I noticed that the price on the contract was approximately 10% higher than I had originally locked with Travelocity. No big deal for me at the time but it was a sign of later things to come.

I was offered an "optional" service called "easy pass" (sp?). Knowing I could pay for the tolls myself, I declined the service. I was told by one of the attendants that if I used the service without having it included into my contract, I would be assessed a fine of $40 by Thrifty. I asked the attendant and her counterpart to confirm whether or not I could pay for tolls via the cash lane to which the response was yes. With that, my family and I went on our way.

A few days later while cruising in the south coast of PR, I attempted to pay for my toll fee via the cash lane only to be told by the attendant that the vehicle's easy pass was active and had already paid the toll. Naively thinking I could pay into the vehicle's account with the intent of successfully arguing with the rental agency about the vehicle's unwillingness to allow one the ability to pay in cash, I gave the toll booth attendant $10.00 to add into the Thrifty account. That didn't work. I was advised that even though I had elected to pay for my tolls in cash, their vehicles already come with the "easy pass" pre-installed, which does not allow for one to pay the toll without using the service. As a result, I was fined $40.00 by Thrifty. So, for a grand total of $0.80 in tolls, I am out $40 for the fine and $10 for the attempt at paying for my tolls via the cash lane. That does not include the higher than originally quoted rental rate. When everything was said and done, I ended up paying 60% higher than the rate quoted by Travelocity.

Here is what is wrong with Thrifty's policy. If the vehicle is set to pay for tolls, then do not give the option to the driver. Instead, add the usage fee to the baseline rental fee. To do otherwise is a cheap way to increase your margins by trapping tourists into an unfair company fine. Not only that, but unless other companies are doing the same thing, you are presenting an artificially low rental rate to potential customers, absolutely unethical and disappointing behavior.

I sent the company's service department an email two weeks ago asking for a refund of the Thrifty assessed fine in order to salvage my relationship with them but received no answer. I am never again going to use their services. I should have gone with Enterprise. In the end, the price enterprise had quoted would have been lower even without the fine. Lesson learned.

I rented a car to use while on a trip to FL. I got the bill, paid it and didn't think anymore about it. Three months later, Thrifty charged my account $25.75 more. When I called them to inquire, the customer service person was rude and told me that they charged me for exiting off an unmarked toll road. I asked them how could I exit off without driving on it since they didn't charge me for driving on it. He just said that I had signed an agreement to pay any toll charges and that someone or something took a picture of my car and they would continue to charge my charge card until all the charges were paid.

The charge for exiting off the unmarked toll road was 75 cents. The company charged me an additional $25 just because they had my charge card number. The person that I talked to said that it wasn't their fault that the state of FL didn't bother to clearly mark the toll roads and that some of them were not marked at all such as the one they say I exited from.

This is the worst experience that I have ever had with a rental company since I rented the car that I will probably never finish paying for. For the state of FL, it seems so illegal to charge for something that is not posted and it seems just like very poor customer service for Thrifty to charge $25 for a 75 cent charge.

On December 23, 2011 my husband and I arrived at the Colorado Springs Airport to pickup a car that we had reserved thru AOL at Thrifty Car Rental. The girl at the counter told us that the compact car that we ordered was not available and they were giving us a free upgrade. I ask if it was at the same price and she assured us that it was. After she did all the paperwork and my husband signed all of the papers we were ready to walk away and I pulled the paper out to make sure the price was the same as the AOL confirmation that I had in my possession. And it was not. It was $50.00 more than I was quoted. I immediately told her this was not correct. She said that AOL doesn't have the correct taxes on the confirmation. I told her that I always rent cars in this airport from Enterprise and their price is always the same as the confirmation.

I then noticed that we were being charged $4.99 per day for Roadside Assistance. We did not ask for this, nor did we want it. She said that we had to have it because if we lost the keys or the car broke down we would have to pay to have it towed. I then ask if she meant that if say the transmission went out on this vehicle a couple of miles down the road that I would have to pay for this vehicle to be towed. She said yes, and that I would also have to pay to have the transmission repaired.

She said that they have good mechanics, so it would be my fault if the transmission went out and I would have to pay for it. At this point, there are about three people waiting in line to rent cars left. I then called AOL and they booked me another car thru Enterprise at the same rate that I was to get from Thrifty. Then the girl said that she was charging me for a one day rental since I didn't take the car for 9 days and pay the extra $50.00. I am going to dispute this on my credit card since I never agreed to pay this charge and I never even touched the car that she charged me for and she put it on my card without any signature.

I will never deal with Thrifty again. It is sad that this is how this company makes their money by ripping people off. The person that waited on us was so rude I couldn't believe that she has a job like this. Also, this is not a one-star company. They are a no-star company but I was forced to put one star on this complaint. My husband and I had traveled all day to get to spend Christmas with our only granddaughter. We have made this trip many times to this airport and I normally get the luggage and my husband gets the car and we are on our way quickly.

My husband has several health problems and we needed to get to our destination so he could get some rest. Instead we have to go thru this nightmare at the airport for two hours. Our family was calling us to find out where we were and what was going on. It certainly was undue stress that neither of us needed and it was all caused by Thrifty Car Rental. Save yourself the aggravation and use another company.

I booked a vehicle through Expedia's website. The booking was for a full-size SUV to pick up from SFO and to drop off at LAX. Pick up was booked for Monday, 12 December, at 12:00. I assumed this would be three days rental and had this confirmed at time of collection. Drop off was for Thursday, 15 December at 12:00. Total fees estimated by Expedia were $589.76 which included a drop off charge of $297.56. On arrival at SFO by taxi, we navigated the labyrinth of rental companies and were directed to the Thrifty Car collection point only to find out we had to go back to the reservations desk despite having a reservation. This is approximately a 10 to 15-minute ordeal with family and luggage.

The reservation procedure began with a lady who whilst very pleasant began to give me an overview of the real charges. This resulted in a rental agreement of $752.40. The other kicker is that the rental starts from the minute the reservation person logs you in. In this case, the kind lady was going to log us in at 11.00 am when it was already 11:15 and we still had to make our way back to the car, no car keys in my hand at this point. I had this adjusted to 11:15.

Not wanting to spoil our holiday and not to mention we are sitting in a car depot with our luggage with no other means of transport or lodging booked, we accepted our medicine and headed off. On departure, I noticed that the fuel gauge was a whisker under reading on full, probably a needle width. The car wasn't exactly what I ordered. With our luggage, I was expecting a Chevy Tahoe, instead we were given a Traverse, which was okay if you had minimal luggage.

On arrival into LA, I sort out gas stations within the mandated distance of the drop off. This was no mean feat for someone new to driving in LA. We navigated our way around LAX and found the Thrifty depot. The woman who directed us in had limited vocabulary. "Keys" were the only words she knew at this point. Without any other advice on what we should do or where we should go, we began to unload the vehicle. Half way through this, the woman found another few sentences, "Your gas is low and we will have to charge you extra." I tried to explain that the indicator was under reading. The response was that I should have reported this in SFO. No worries, we should have wheeled around on the freeway on the way out of SFO and spent more of our rental time reporting something that Thrifty should know about! I was later to learn all about rental time.

By this time, a rather large guy who was introduced as the manager advised that he was taking the vehicle to the pump and would be charging us approximately $8.50 a gallon to refill. We were also advised that what he said was final. This manager then proceeded to drive off with the tail gate still fully open, wheels screeching and no concern whatsoever for anyone near or around the vehicle. It was at this point we collected our luggage and headed towards the reception area to book transport to our motel.

Whilst waiting for a taxi, the woman re-appeared and handed me a docket without stopping to explain its contents. The docket was now for $818.76. Items such as LDW1, UMP, SLI, VLF,PPP were now charged out at 4 days instead of three. The docket shows the return time at 11:47 am and for this, we were charged an extra hour at $9.56 which included "Old Mates" drive around to the bowser. I have been ripped of to the tune of $66.36 which isn't worth the grief to pursue and I imagine Thrifty is aware of this and from what I have read on this website, seems to be how they do business. The $66.36 is also insignificant in regards to the misleading rates on the Expedia website which really gets up ones nose. All the above combined with the rudeness bordering on standover tactics on reception after a long journey says everything about this company and some of its staff.

I went on to the Thrifty site to see if there were any links to make contact and lodge a complaint and maybe give Thrifty the right to respond. The only contact link was to join a membership. All this tells me is that they really do not want to know about complaints. I could have called on an international number but that would only incur more cost and time. I would have thought in hard times that companies such as this would strive to accommodate international clients who would happily spread the word. Obviously, not Thrifty USA!

This website is forcing me to put a star there. I would give them a negative if it would allow it.

I rented a full size car on 11/13/2011 and this was the most horrible rental I have ever dealt with. I did the rental thru Expedia.com where it said the rental had unlimited miles and was $65.86 (which included taxes). When I get to the car rental location and pick up the car, the clerk told me that it was not unlimited miles and I was forced to pay $147.55 for a one-day rental. I had to get the car and leave and I didn't have time to continue listening to the clerk who told me that I was a liar about the website saying the miles were unlimited.

I made many phone calls throughout that evening and the next day, so instead of being able to focus on family fun and taking my niece around to colleges and University, I was completely distracted by trying to get a hold of someone to get this worked out. That caused me to be to everything that day. I was to have the rental returned by 2:50 pm. But I was delayed because of being on the phone trying to get this worked out. In Louisiana the cell services is horrible in many areas, which meant I had to find a good service area and sit to be able to talk on the phone.

I couldn't drive the miles I needed because I was told I was going to be charged for them; so before going anywhere, I needed to make sure that it was not going to cost me another $100. Thrifty Car Rental is the most difficult to get a hold of and no one returns my calls, even after the numerous messages I have left. I made many attempts to contact Thrifty customer service, but was told that I had to go directly to the Shreveport, LA location.

I finally got a hold of a lady who said that she would honor the Expedia rate and the mileage would be unlimited. I would just have to bring in my gas receipts to show I stayed in the state of LA. I brought the vehicle back that evening at 8 pm instead of the 2:50 pm and was charged the 2 day rental. I received and signed for $147.55 to be paid. I checked my bank account and $182.61 was deducted. I have tried to call the Shreveport, LA location numerous times and receive an answering machine, which I have left multiple messages.

I then found out that they added $35.06 for 3 gallons of fuel, which when I left the car with them. I made sure it was on a full tank and I took a photograph of it being on a full tank. They are liars and thieves and I will never get back that valuable time that was supposed to be fun, but instead it was very stressful and miserable. I would like a refund of the $116.74 that they stole from me. It might be a small amount to them, but to me that is groceries for a week. I don't have the money to hire an attorney, but if Thrifty Car Rental is doing this to more people, just imagine how much extra money they are making. I wonder what the news media would say about this.

I said yes and then he asked if I wanted additional insurance coverage. I told him no, because my credit card covered car rental ins.

When it came time to sign, he summarized what the boxes said. He even said to sign one that stated I was declining insurance coverage. I went through them trusting that what he said I was signing was legit. When I returned the car and noticed the charges, I asked to speak to the manager. Cristina, the girl at the front, rolled her eyes and the other lady clerk had this annoyed expression. She then came out and said the manager told her he wouldn't be able to do anything and I'd have to call customer service tomorrow. He didn't even come out to tell me. That was the first sign of being unprofessional. I insisted, she then went back and then told me that it'll be 20 minutes because he was on a phone call. I knew she was lying. He assumed I was in a rush to get my plane so he'd make me wait and go ahead. But guess what? I started chit-chatting with the next client who came by and all of a sudden, his 20-minute call became 5 minutes!

Wow! The power of some "friendly" conversation. Mark or Mike, the manager, came out very angry and said he couldn't do anything and would make sure to call customer service tomorrow. Well, he had cleared $285 on his credit card to make sure he had plenty of money. We had made the reservation through Orbitz. My husband was wary that there would be hidden charges and I assured him that it would not happen. I showed him the contract where it states, "amount due at the rental counter: $120.68."

He arrived at the counter, gave them his contract, and the lady asked for his driver's license and credit card. She ran the card and said that "it was declined." He said it was impossible; there was clearly enough money available on the card to cover the $120 cost. She then told him that they need to hold $380 on the card. When he returned the car, he would only be charged the quoted amount. He called me in a panic and I immediately added money to his credit card account. He stood in line again, waiting 40 minutes behind other renters who, surprisingly, were all being charged more than their quoted amounts.

There were 11 people ahead of my husband and son, and after this overcharge to each of them, he watched nine of them walk away to other companies. He again approached the counter and told her that he had added more money to his credit card and assured her that there was enough on the card now. She looked at him and said, "I'm sorry. I rented a compact car from Thrifty San Diego Airport. It was supposed to be a compact, but they gave me a Dodge Caliber as an "upgrade". It had 42997 miles on it. If that was an upgrade, I do not know what their regular cars ran like. Maybe I had "sucker" written on my forehead. Mechanically, a very dangerous car. I rented without the appropriate air in the tires, and sounded like a disk shoe was grinding at every stop.

This car fishtailed at every turn, and I considered it very unsafe. Finally, I was able to balance the air in the tires, which knocked out the destabilization. What I liked especially was the key provided by Thrifty. Apparently, someone had lost the key with the remote. (not me) and as a consequence you have to open and lock all doors, including the driver's door, from the inside, as the key provided was obviously a poor duplicate, without any remote features. What was most interesting, and I hope all reading attorneys take note was that, when I complained at turn in, the lineman whipped out my bill and said "we were done".

I stood there and watched a vehicle which was unsafe then, and would be more unsafe in the future, be washed and vacuumed, and put back on the line. I pay attention to automobiles, as I was responsible for 228 vehicles in San Francisco, as the motor transport officer. That car, without a thorough inspection, and corrective action, was a potential death trap to an unsuspecting, or lesser experienced driver.

Whoever has the Thrifty franchise in San Diego airport, is going to cost himself a lot of money, due to what I deem shoddy automotive practices. My final shot is this, if you give a person an "upgrade", make sure it's a decent upgrade worthy of a professional company. My next car will be rented from a competent rental agency. Attorneys, if the Matrix crashes in new future, I'll happily testify. I don't expect anything from a company, who cares so little for the customers, and so much for themselves.

The car reservation was booked as Travelocity itinerary ** and Thrifty confirmation ** for 4 days, unlimited mileage economy (Aveo), at MHT (Manchester, NH) for $100.78 (additional charge added at time of rental for SW frequent flyer credit of $1.50 per day). The total rental was for $106.78. The economy car was not available (in all fleet spaces filled upon return, there was not an economy present) and a 'free' upgrade was made to a larger car (Malibu, required as the smaller was not available). The car was returned on time and top off gas was added within the 10 mile radius.

Upon pick up, a delay was made as the car was returned by the prior renter or previously with damage on the left bumper/fender, requiring the single on duty staff to go to the garage to enter the information on the contract which he did not sign or annotate. Upon return, three people were at the airport counter (the garage staff leaves at 10 pm, not the 1 am posted hours, and local hours to 1 am are only staffed if a reservation is active). One was an accounting person who said she was already clocked out and could not do the contract return. The other two indicated they could not do a return (with the counter staffed and within open hours). Credit card charge was made a few days later of $138.39, not $106.78, a $30+ up charge. No contract copy was and has ever been provided from the vendor as indicated. This was not an after hours drop and the keys were surrendered 15 minutes before the end of the final rental day period.

Oct 17th-Oct 24th, my wife and I rented a car from Thrifty in Carolina, San Juan PR. We were urged by the Hispanic female at the counter that we were going to need an EZ-pass to get around the Island. The sales person then stated that if we didn't get the EZ-pass we were not going to be able to use some of the highways, since some of the tolls didn't take cash (EZ-pass only). We were told by the female sales person that the rental fee for the EZ-pass would cover all tolls and that it was a great deal. Not knowing the island we believed the sales person.

At the end of our trip we returned the vehicle paid for the rental and asked if there were any other fees like state tax, local sales tax or any other fees. We were told by the same female sales person the we were paid in full. However, on 11-08-11 I received a charge on my credit card for $4.35, with the caption "waiting for final amount from merchant". I contacted the office in Carolina San Juan and spoke to the same female sales person (it is only a 2-person office). When I asked about the charges, she stated that it was for the tolls and that the fees I paid for the EZ-pass was just to use it and not to pay the tolls.

When I tried to explain that that wasn't what was explained to us at the time of the rental, the female sales person then stated "You were stupid for not reading before you signed!". I asked for her name but she refused so I then asked to speak to the Manager. I was placed on hold, (at the small 2 man office on a Wednesday afternoon) where i waited for 31 minutes (time logged on Iphone) but I never spoke to the manager. I refuse to pay for the extra charges. We feel that we have been tricked into these extra charges. We will never do business with thrifty again.

I recently rented a car from Thrifty Car Rental at Adelaide Airport. I returned the car in perfect condition. There were no incidents, no accidents and there was no car park damage. I have never caused damage to a hire car.

The next day, having returned interstate, Thrifty phoned me to inform me they had deducted $220 from my Mastercard for 'damage' to the car. I asked what damage and they emailed an incident report form alleging a 'scrape on front left'.

I imagine they thought they were safe from scrutiny, having hired the car to someone who lives thousands of kms away who had since returned home. However I was able to get my son, who works in the Insurance and Loss Adjustment industry, and my daughter, a reliable witness and government employee, to inspect the alleged 'damage' to the car. It turned out to be 'a black scuff mark at the bottom of the bumper bar'. I will attach the photo later today.

It is obvious that Thrifty do not repair minor damage to their hire cars. Every time you hire a car, previous bumps and scrapes are listed on the documentation which are clearly bad enough to have enabled them to charge the renter for the alleged 'damage'. Some renters cannot afford the insurance and would be up for $1500 + per scratch, scrape or small dent. Thrifty pockets the money as these things don't get fixed. The cars are eventually sold or auctioned 'as is'.

I rang Thrifty and asked who their insurer was. I thought maybe an insurer was being defrauded. I found that Thrifty have their own insurance company, "Thrifty Insurance", which apparently has no phone number or address. So, Thrifty can pocket these nice little bonuses with no feelings of guilt.

I have now contacted the South Australian equivalent of the Department of Fair Trading and will take this matter as far as I need to in order to retrieve the funds stolen from me.

Beware of this scam. Make sure you stay with the car as it is inspected on return and photograph any alleged 'damage'. Contact your credit card company if you believe there has been fraud.

To me, all rental car companies are not friendly with people of low income or fixed income, seniors, people with certain types of disabilities, the ones who have debit cards and no other major credit cards. When I arrived at Vancouver airport to pick up the car from Thrifty, the agent whose first language was not English (and very hard to understand) handed me the contract and said, "Initial here and sign here." I was never asked if I needed insurance or if I wanted insurance. I was the only customer there but everything was very rushed and they sent me out to the parking lot to get the car. We headed out in the car thinking everything was great. All paid and ready to go.

When we returned the car to the airport, we were met in the parking lot by a representative who asked, "Do you have the key?" He took the key and started doing his thing--checking the gas, mileage and so on. My husband and I unloaded our luggage and proceeded into the Thrifty desk. I went to a lady at the counter who greeted me with, "Do you have your white slip?" "What white slip?" I asked. "The guy outside should have given you a white slip." I went back outside to the parking lot to find the guy who took the keys. He handed me a slip with no comment. I went back inside and started to proceed toward the counter and the lady yells at me from the counter, "You're done. If you have your white slip, you can go!" That was the extent of customer service at their counter--very not friendly!

When we got home and we received the Visa bill, we had a charge for $553.69 for Thrifty car rental. I immediately called Expedia to confirm that I had paid for the car rental up front. They checked into it for me and told me that Thrifty had charged me for the insurance.

The girl at the airport did't know my name, they didn't give me my contract back with the information. First off all, she told me I had to pay for the insurance that everyone had to. I had never bought insurance because I have my own, but since she said I had to, I did.

It was an extra of almost $24 a day which was more than my rental price but I needed the car. Then I told her that my knee was hurt and she said it's important to put me in a bigger car to make it easier on my knee. And also since I get discounts through work it would be cheaper. She never mentioned any type of fee. I told her that would be great, she then told me they would be holding over $300 but the balance would be refunded when I returned the car. So when I saw that price, I thought nothing of it.

As it turned out, I didn't have to pay for insurance and was charged and extra $15 a day upgrade charge and another type of insurance was added that I had no idea about. I needed the car an extra day making it a $5/day rental price. When I called to extend, I was told it would be over $400 and that's when I was told of all the charges.

Absolutely horrendous service at the San Diego Airport, Thrifty rental facility. I rented a car that has an engine that cuts off at 80mph, then the car doesn't recover. Driving on the LA freeways means sometimes, for safety, you have to accelerate. Thrifty never mentioned this. I called customer service all morning and was supposed to speak to a manager. A very rude Eduardo took my car keys, said he'll do nothing for me, and drove off with the car when I wanted to return it. He said I cannot speak to the manager and I had to walk off the property and literally walk into another company to get a ride to the airport so I could then rent another car. Absolutely the worst ever experience I have had in 27 years of renting cars. They should tell you that the engine will cut off at a certain speed. Sometimes, you have to accelerate to pass quickly - it doesn't mean the renter is speeding. Then, Eduardo printed me a bill for the entire rental time. And now, I have to spend hours and almost a whole day dealing with this. Horrendous.

I searched and reserved online for a mid-sized car for pickup at San Antonio, TX airport. Then, my husband called the 800 number and they gave him a $10 better deal for a week rental ($157 vs. $167 or so online) plus $60 free gas.

I got the confirmation and went to pick up the car today (10/3/11). At the lot, I asked if they have a Chevy Chase. She said, "No, we have a Kia." Then, the rep named Alex said that my reservation was for two days and not nine. Huh? I asked her, "Don't you think a 2-day rental for $157 is a bit excessive?" She said, "No! We are competitive with all the other rental companies. $69 for Alamo, $67 for blah, blah. After arguing with her for a few minutes, telling her that we even had two reservations for about the same price, I called my husband. I told him what was going on and asked him to come pick me up.

It was then she realized that I could leave. I had come on the airport shuttle and she fully believe that I was trapped. My husband reminded her that we had made another reservation online and for her to check that one. She finally did a search and found the other one--nine days at $167. "Oh, yeah. Here it is," she said. She said that they had a Kia and I asked her to look at that one.

She went on the lot and looked around. She then came back and said that they only had a Ford Fusion at 24 mpg. I asked if they had anything with a better mileage. She said that they have a Ford Focus at 28 mpg. I said, "Forget it." The safety rating is bad for those cars and the gas mileage is awful. I told her that what they attempted to do was wrong and that I was going to complain and give feedback so no one else would go through this.

I booked a car through rentalcars.com. At first it seemed as if everything was going to be great.

When I arrived at Thrifty, the CSR didn't seem to know about my reservation. After much searching, she finally gave a car. On the site, I had booked a navigation system and was charged for it but at the counter, she didn't have any clue that a navigation system was booked with the car and the amount quoted to me as the cost of the rental was far more than rentalcars.com had quoted.

When I questioned it, I was told that the insurance was the reason for the price difference and so I accepted it and got a vehicle. This was Saturday, August 20, 2011 at around 11:50 p.m. On Sunday morning at 11:31 a.m., I was in a car crash where a caravan lost control of his car behind me and slammed into my car sending me into a spin. When my car stopped, the caravan came around and hit me for a second time. After my three passengers and myself got out of the car and a passerby contacted the police, I attempted to contact roadside assistance who had me on hold for twenty minutes and still no one came to the line.

The officer, after taking our statements, called a cab to take me and my party off of the I-95 and to our destination. I called Thrifty once I arrived at my point of safety ($40 later) and was told by the agent there that I had no insurance on the car and when I questioned what I had paid at the pick up counter, I was told that it was a form of insurance but not one to assist me in this traffic accident, and that I should call the claims department on Monday at 10 a.m. for further information.

On Monday morning, I went to Thrifty (the location where I received the car initially) and gave a report to the representative there. I asked about the insurance and me being billed since I did not receive nor did I want a replacement vehicle as my trip was being cut short. I was told that I do have insurance but for the other person's car and since I was not responsible for the accident, I had nothing to worry about as the driver of the caravan would have to pay for Thrifty's car. As for my billing, I was told that I would be charged for the car rental up to the time of the accident and since I had returned the navigation system when I made the report I would only be charged for that as well up to the time of the accident. The representative said it would be $96. She then called a taxi cab for me. I asked for copies of the police statement and the report that she took, which I received.

On Friday, August 26, 2011 I received a billing from Thrifty for $214.98 and every attempt to call the location proved fruitless. This is not what I had expected. By far I am more than disappointed. I have been robbed.

I took my complaint to supervision/management and here is what they told me, "sorry but it is policy." They could care less about anyone's job because of their policy.

Mind you, I came to Thrifty, reserved my cars with them for years, and now I have been jolted by their policy that they cannot make an exception to the rule! The money was in my account and I even offered to pay cash up front but they refused that offer! They wanted a major credit card or no car! We found one at National which cost us $542 versus the Thrifty reservation price of $146. No way to treat long-time customers!

I pre-arranged a car at the Denver International Airport (Vehicle # 333174) on August 14 - 17 2011. The agent asked about Pass 24 for three days at $9.99. I explained in detail where I was going -- Colorado Springs, Estes Park, Golden, Co. etc. -- and was told that I would definitely need this $29.97 charge. I questioned the agent in detail and asked, “Will I be traveling on the roads where this is needed? Her answer was, “Definitely. You will need this.”

400 miles later when we turned in the car, not only did we not travel on any road that required a Pass 24, we never saw one.

I would not be as upset as I was had I not questioned the agent in detail about the pass and had she not insisted that I would definitely need it. Either she did not know about the pass, or she was lying just to make a $30-sale.

Ironically, when we turned the car in and traveled back to the airport with another family, the issue about Pass 24 came up. They told us that they asked the same questions that we did and they went to the same places we visited. But the agent explained to them to not waste their money on Pass 24 because they would not need it. I believe that the agent misrepresented the product and our $9.97 should be returned.

    Sincerely,

    William **

I rented a vehicle from the Thrifty at 148 W. 83rd Street, Manhattan, NY, on July 5th 2011. I picked the vehicle up and drove approximately 30 miles up Palisades Parkway where I noticed the brakes on the vehicle were failing and making a metal grinding sounding. I was planning to have this vehicle for twelve days and knew that it would not be safe to drive this vehicle. I called and requested a new vehicle. After many phone calls and a three hour wait on the side of the road, a new vehicle finally arrived. The vehicle was a Chevrolet Impala.

On the evening of Friday, July 8th 2011, at approximately 6:00pm, I was driving North on the New York State Thruway in the pouring rain, when an 18-wheel semi merged into me, side swiping the passenger side of the vehicle. The metal bar from the rear of the semi-truck shifted the metal around the front wheel well forward, thus making the front right tire unable to move and the car not drivable. A state trooper arrived and took a report.

I contacted Thrifty Road Side Assistance at this time. The woman I spoke with at Thrifty said that they would be sending a tow truck with a new car on it for me and would be picking up the damaged disabled vehicle. The New York State Trooper informed me that the New York State Thruway was a controlled access road meaning there is only one tow truck that is authorized to tow on that road and Thrifty's tow truck would have to pick the vehicle up from the lot where the authorized tow truck would be taking it. I informed the Thrifty representative and after an hour wait she called me back to inform me that there would be nothing they could do for me since it was so late on a Friday evening and that I would have to wait until Monday morning to get another rental. I explained to her that I was half way between Manhattan, NY and Middletown, NY where I was staying during that leg of my trip. I explained that I was stranded and needed a vehicle to get to my hotel. I further went on to explain that it was dark, raining and I am a single woman on the side of the New York State Thruway. The only solution the representative provided was that maybe the tow truck driver could take me to a diner where I could wait until Monday morning (48 hours).

Completely appalled that this woman would even mention such an asinine and idiotic idea, I got very upset and demanded to speak with her supervisor. After explaining the situation the supervisor said that she had no authority to help me and would call the Manhattan manager on duty. After speaking with the city manager on duty, the supervisor informed me that he said he was not willing to do anything for me and asked me to call back Monday morning and maybe he would have a change of heart. I was furious that this company was ok with me being stranded on the side of a busy state thruway in the dark, and in the rain with my luggage and the manager who could help me instead told her to repeat his rude remark to me. I had no other option but to call a taxi to pick me up and take me 50 miles to Middletown where my hotel was located. The cab ride cost me $164.00.

The next morning, July 9th 2011, I tried to contact Thrifty to see about getting another car, I was told that the manager would have to help me, and he was not in. The associate took my name and number and said that he would call me back when he came in around 9am. At 9:30am, I had not heard anything and needed a vehicle, I called Thrifty again and was told that the manager still had not come in. At 11am, I called Thrifty again and I was told that the manager was not available and would call me back. This was the last day of the hotel I had booked in Middletown and I was due to check into another hotel in New Jersey that night, so I needed to have a vehicle. I called Thrifty at 1pm, 2pm and 3pm that day and each time I was told only a manager could help me and one would return my call. I explained the dire situation I was in and how many times I had previously called and I was assured someone would call me back within the hour. By 4pm that afternoon, I called and made one last attempt for Thrifty to rectify this horrible situation they had put me in and I was given the run around for the last time.

I wanted my contract cancelled and I would never do business with them again if they were to send me a bill for the three days I had a vehicle. I explained that I picked up on the July 5th, and since rental agreements are for 24-hour periods, I should have been billed from the 5th to the 6th, the 6th to the 7th and the 7th to the 8th, 3 days total. The associate, Christopher (at the 83rd Street location) said he agreed that it's what I should be charged and would speak with his manager and have him call me back to finalize the bill; never heard from him.

I called Thrifty's 83rd Street location and their 800 number on July 11th at 10 am and 2:30 pm, July 12th at 9:30am and 3pm, on July 13th at 11am and 4pm, on July 14th at 9am and 1:45pm, on July 15th at 10:45am and 2:45pm, on July 18th at 10am, July 19th at 10am, July 20th at 10am, July 23rd at 10am and finally on July 25th, I called Bank of America to file a dispute. I will not be able to waste any more time with such a lousy organization and needed this to be taken care of.

I went to Avis and had to rent another vehicle for much more than I should have paid because it was short notice and from an airport with a tax rate of 30%! The taxi expense and the Avis rental expense were all incurred because Thrifty would not make right on their contractual obligation to provide me with another vehicle.

I rented a Hyundai Accent from Shreveport Regional Airport on August 5, 2011 to be returned on August 8, 2011. On August 7, 2011, I returned to my rental car after taking my grandson to a movie, only to find that the car would not start. It happened to be that the temperature in Shreveport that day was 107 degrees. I called the 24-hour roadside assistance helpline, only to be told that they could not help me, and if they sent out assistance, I would have to pay for the assistance. I find that this is totally unacceptable.

I was told that I could NOT get another car and that they could not help me because there was no manager on duty (unbelievable). When I returned the car and went to the agent at the airport, she told me that she would have a manager get in touch with me, and to date no one has addressed my problem. I am asking that this problem be addressed through corporate, and I look forward to hearing from you. Thanking you for your attention.

I reserved a car for $325 at London Heathrow. I picked up the smallest car and was charged more than 3 times the amount my contract said. I did pop a tire and was charged $150, I get that. My final bill was $1077. I talked with the manager and he was not willing to assist. He said a charge was tacked on for roadside assistance that I never asked for or used. I was charged for going into the Eurotunel and was never told that would be extra. I emailed him and no results. Totally gauged me on a Vauxhall Corsa tiny car. I was also charged a premium fee since it was an airport! Where else do people pick up rental cars? Also add an admin fee!

We rented a car for three days, asked if there was a charge for a second driver. We were told that there was no charge. Upon returning, we found a charge for an additional $10/day. I was told that nobody would say that there wasn't an additional charge (liars).

They refused to do anything about it. Customer service sucked. Don't ever use them.

I booked a car from Thrifty through rentals.com. I normally use Avis, who are fantastic. I booked the car for 320 euros and it said I was insured.

When I got to the desk, they told me I had to take out extra insurance out for 240 euros. I have Amex prestige cover, which I got especially for car hire. It covers you for c/d/w and excess. Avis recognize this every time. Unfortunately, they were booked out. I needed the car for work so I was stuck. I even went to the Avis desk, showed them my policy and said they accept it--why won't you?

Well, they were just trying to rip me off. Disgraceful. I will never book with Thrifty ever again.
