I rented a vehicle from the Thrifty at 148 W. 83rd Street, Manhattan, NY, on July 5th 2011. I picked the vehicle up and drove approximately 30 miles up Palisades Parkway where I noticed the brakes on the vehicle were failing and making a metal grinding sounding. I was planning to have this vehicle for twelve days and knew that it would not be safe to drive this vehicle. I called and requested a new vehicle. After many phone calls and a three hour wait on the side of the road, a new vehicle finally arrived. The vehicle was a Chevrolet Impala.
On the evening of Friday, July 8th 2011, at approximately 6:00pm, I was driving North on the New York State Thruway in the pouring rain, when an 18-wheel semi merged into me, side swiping the passenger side of the vehicle. The metal bar from the rear of the semi-truck shifted the metal around the front wheel well forward, thus making the front right tire unable to move and the car not drivable. A state trooper arrived and took a report.
I contacted Thrifty Road Side Assistance at this time. The woman I spoke with at Thrifty said that they would be sending a tow truck with a new car on it for me and would be picking up the damaged disabled vehicle. The New York State Trooper informed me that the New York State Thruway was a controlled access road meaning there is only one tow truck that is authorized to tow on that road and Thrifty's tow truck would have to pick the vehicle up from the lot where the authorized tow truck would be taking it. I informed the Thrifty representative and after an hour wait she called me back to inform me that there would be nothing they could do for me since it was so late on a Friday evening and that I would have to wait until Monday morning to get another rental. I explained to her that I was half way between Manhattan, NY and Middletown, NY where I was staying during that leg of my trip. I explained that I was stranded and needed a vehicle to get to my hotel. I further went on to explain that it was dark, raining and I am a single woman on the side of the New York State Thruway. The only solution the representative provided was that maybe the tow truck driver could take me to a diner where I could wait until Monday morning (48 hours).
Completely appalled that this woman would even mention such an asinine and idiotic idea, I got very upset and demanded to speak with her supervisor. After explaining the situation the supervisor said that she had no authority to help me and would call the Manhattan manager on duty. After speaking with the city manager on duty, the supervisor informed me that he said he was not willing to do anything for me and asked me to call back Monday morning and maybe he would have a change of heart. I was furious that this company was ok with me being stranded on the side of a busy state thruway in the dark, and in the rain with my luggage and the manager who could help me instead told her to repeat his rude remark to me. I had no other option but to call a taxi to pick me up and take me 50 miles to Middletown where my hotel was located. The cab ride cost me $164.00.
The next morning, July 9th 2011, I tried to contact Thrifty to see about getting another car, I was told that the manager would have to help me, and he was not in. The associate took my name and number and said that he would call me back when he came in around 9am. At 9:30am, I had not heard anything and needed a vehicle, I called Thrifty again and was told that the manager still had not come in. At 11am, I called Thrifty again and I was told that the manager was not available and would call me back. This was the last day of the hotel I had booked in Middletown and I was due to check into another hotel in New Jersey that night, so I needed to have a vehicle. I called Thrifty at 1pm, 2pm and 3pm that day and each time I was told only a manager could help me and one would return my call. I explained the dire situation I was in and how many times I had previously called and I was assured someone would call me back within the hour. By 4pm that afternoon, I called and made one last attempt for Thrifty to rectify this horrible situation they had put me in and I was given the run around for the last time.
I wanted my contract cancelled and I would never do business with them again if they were to send me a bill for the three days I had a vehicle. I explained that I picked up on the July 5th, and since rental agreements are for 24-hour periods, I should have been billed from the 5th to the 6th, the 6th to the 7th and the 7th to the 8th, 3 days total. The associate, Christopher (at the 83rd Street location) said he agreed that it's what I should be charged and would speak with his manager and have him call me back to finalize the bill; never heard from him.
I called Thrifty's 83rd Street location and their 800 number on July 11th at 10 am and 2:30 pm, July 12th at 9:30am and 3pm, on July 13th at 11am and 4pm, on July 14th at 9am and 1:45pm, on July 15th at 10:45am and 2:45pm, on July 18th at 10am, July 19th at 10am, July 20th at 10am, July 23rd at 10am and finally on July 25th, I called Bank of America to file a dispute. I will not be able to waste any more time with such a lousy organization and needed this to be taken care of.
I went to Avis and had to rent another vehicle for much more than I should have paid because it was short notice and from an airport with a tax rate of 30%! The taxi expense and the Avis rental expense were all incurred because Thrifty would not make right on their contractual obligation to provide me with another vehicle.

I rented a Hyundai Accent from Shreveport Regional Airport on August 5, 2011 to be returned on August 8, 2011. On August 7, 2011, I returned to my rental car after taking my grandson to a movie, only to find that the car would not start. It happened to be that the temperature in Shreveport that day was 107 degrees. I called the 24-hour roadside assistance helpline, only to be told that they could not help me, and if they sent out assistance, I would have to pay for the assistance. I find that this is totally unacceptable.
I was told that I could NOT get another car and that they could not help me because there was no manager on duty (unbelievable). When I returned the car and went to the agent at the airport, she told me that she would have a manager get in touch with me, and to date no one has addressed my problem. I am asking that this problem be addressed through corporate, and I look forward to hearing from you. Thanking you for your attention.

I reserved a car for $325 at London Heathrow. I picked up the smallest car and was charged more than 3 times the amount my contract said. I did pop a tire and was charged $150, I get that. My final bill was $1077. I talked with the manager and he was not willing to assist. He said a charge was tacked on for roadside assistance that I never asked for or used. I was charged for going into the Eurotunel and was never told that would be extra. I emailed him and no results. Totally gauged me on a Vauxhall Corsa tiny car. I was also charged a premium fee since it was an airport! Where else do people pick up rental cars? Also add an admin fee!

We rented a car for three days, asked if there was a charge for a second driver. We were told that there was no charge. Upon returning, we found a charge for an additional $10/day. I was told that nobody would say that there wasn't an additional charge (liars).
They refused to do anything about it. Customer service sucked. Don't ever use them.

I booked a car from Thrifty through rentals.com. I normally use Avis, who are fantastic. I booked the car for 320 euros and it said I was insured.
When I got to the desk, they told me I had to take out extra insurance out for 240 euros. I have Amex prestige cover, which I got especially for car hire. It covers you for c/d/w and excess. Avis recognize this every time. Unfortunately, they were booked out. I needed the car for work so I was stuck. I even went to the Avis desk, showed them my policy and said they accept it--why won't you?
Well, they were just trying to rip me off. Disgraceful. I will never book with Thrifty ever again.

We arrived at George Bush Airport in Houston to rent the car reserved. From the moment we approached the counter, we were met with numerous challenges by their employee Emma. Her demeanor and attitude indicated that she was going to find every possible problem to handle our rental.
My family members, who travel over thrice a year to the States on tourist visits and rent cars in Florida, NYC and Texas, were declined because supposedly, the driver's licenses were expired! Not so...international DLs are different and some countries do not carry expiration dates.
We signed a contract that stated NO SMOKING or you will face a $ 250 charge. When we got the car, it smelled awful and there was no time to change it or find another minivan. We were on our way to DFW to catch a flight four hours later.

I took my boyfriend to Miami for the weekend to visit family, and celebrate his birthday. I rented a car from Thrifty at the Fort Lauderdale International Airport. The cost of the rental for two days and seven hours was $259.88, plus $30 in gas and $30 to park where we stayed.
Upon arrival, we were very happy with the quick service, and the car we received (This was also the first time renting a car for either one of us).
The complaint occurred when we went to return the vehicle. I used my seven month old Droid X cell phone (approximate is value $500) to locate the closest gas station to the airport. Filled the tank, and proceeded to the drop-off area.
I grabbed some papers from the console where my phone was to, and left the phone in the car. We walked through the car rental building and to the shuttle to the terminals. On the shuttle, I realized I left my phone; we stayed on the shuttle back to the car rental building, all of this was at the most 15 minutes. At the counter, I told the attendant, who went to go look through the car.
After 15 minutes of waiting, there I was told the phone was not in the car. If our flight had not been delayed, we would've also missed our flight. However, from the 15 minutes I dropped the car off to the round-trip on the shuttle back to the rental area, my phone was missing.
It never even made it to lost and found. I'm not too surprised at the response I received from customer service the next morning, "Sorry your phone is your responsibility."
I would think Thrifty would hold its employees to a higher standard.

I reserved a car online at Thrifty website. The airport would not honor the rental because the rate was very low. Thrifty even emailed me a confirmation the day before my trip but the airport manager refused to accept this low offer. He would not even discuss it face to face but only by phone even though I was right there at the counter! He told me to call corporate office and he also said that I reserved it from a third-party which was a lie as I used Thrifty website!
I called the corporate office and they said that they would not honor it. I was stranded without a car.

I told the agent in Albuquerque, New Mexico, that I did not want an insurance. He said that he did not get it either when he rented. Somehow, I must have signed an insurance waiver which I thought waived my need for insurance. I also signed a separate paper for what I later determined as the exact cost of the extra coverage which the company representatives denied. I thought it was the cost of the rental. They claimed that all charges were presented only on a computer screen I signed. This was not the case but they erased their videotape. They bundled up my more comprehensive paper receipt before I could see it and told me where the car was, and put the key on top of the folder containing the receipt.
Upon returning the car, I discovered the added optional charge and I was told by the manager and agent that they would call me that evening before the added charge went to the credit card. When there was no call, I called my leasing agent who told me that the manager I spoke with had now gone on vacation. Other people I spoke with later said that the manager had not gone on vacation.
After about five months of letters and threats to contact the Attorney General's Office in New Mexico, my insurance waiver charges, which they say they do not sell insurance, was returned to my credit card. The credit card company was of no help. The very hard-line of the agents and consumer complaint representatives with Thrifty could be discouraging to many.

I rented a car from Thrifty Car Rental in Cozumel, Mexico for 10 days and agreed to pay $339.88 (originally, they wanted $381.79 but agreed to the lesser charge since I decided it was too high for complete coverage and had decided to purchase only the liability insurance. Once they lowered to the price to $339.88, I agreed to get complete coverage). When I checked out on June 2, 2011, the amount on the receipt was in pesos and a notation in dollars for $339.88. I told the manager that if the charge was more than $339.88, that I would dispute the bill and he told me that due to the rate of exchange, the amount would not be for $339.88, the amount I agreed to.
Once home, I checked my credit card account and found the charge was for the original amount of $381.79. What irked me was the amount in pesos (based on the exchange rate that day) was correct, it was for $381.79, but the notation was for $339.88 in dollars. My feeling is that the manager never intended to rent me the car for $339.88, knowing I wouldn't check the exchange rate when I dropped off the car. Thrifty Car Rental denied my claim stating they don't intervene when dealing with currency exchanges. I believe the manager intentionally ripped me off for over $40.00 (over 10% of the amount I agreed to pay). I will never rent from Thrift Car Rental again, and I plan to visit Cozumel each year now that I am retired.
Word of warning to those traveling in Mexico, know what the current exchange rate is (approximately), and carry a calculator to figure what you are purchasing in pesos. Many businesses will tell you they are charging you ** dollars but will pad an extra 10% or 20% by increasing the amount you pay in pesos if you pay by credit card. Example: $130.00 is about 1,495 pesos. The business will put down 1,725 pesos, or $150.00. You just got overcharged by $20 more than the price you agreed to pay and won't know it until you get home or check out your credit card online.

We returned our rental car with no damages, fully released by them. They said they would credit us our deposit in 24 hours after the return. It was deducted from our credit card on November 29th, then without notification or authorization, the charge was reapplied to our credit card. I have contacted them multiple times and they say they see by the documentation I forward where this should not have happened. But to date, I have never received the credit. The last email I received said they would not issue a refund. As we are in the US and this occurred in Mexico, I don't know what recourse I have. The amount they charged for deposit is $380.

I've found it very difficult to find Thrifty/DTAG contact email addresses so I hope you can help me or otherwise forward this email to the appropriate person(s). I am writing regarding a recent poor experience I had renting from your franchise (I assume it is a franchise operation) at the airport at San Jose del Cabo, Mexico. Since I assume that Thrifty's business is built upon great customer service and satisfaction, I assumed someone at DTAG would be interested in hearing about this. In fact, maybe you are already aware, given that during my 2 visits to the Thrifty office in Cabo I was clearly not the only dissatisfied customer. Perhaps too, the Thrifty in San Jose del Cabo does not consider or care that their behavior reflects back poorly on your corporate brand.
I have traveled regularly for both business and pleasure for many years now and regularly rent a vehicle. I have never in all those times had an experience even remotely as poor as I did with Thrifty in San Jose del Cabo.
Part 1 - The Pickup I booked online for 1 week (March 16-23) was given a terrific quote of $92.62 "estimated grand total" for "estimated mandatory charges" including fees and taxes. The email confirmation also reminded me to "review all applicable terms and conditions for this location" with a hyperlink that I clicked on passing me to the part of the email that listed those terms and conditions as "N/A". I booked with Thrifty based in large part of this very competitive quote.
However, when I arrived to pick up my vehicle I was told of an additional $13/day mandatory liability insurance fee (PLI) that was non-negotiable and had to be paid. This was shown to me in vague wording on the second page of a 2 page rental agreement print out for my booking that I had not seen before and was certainly not included in my online booking confirmation email (which I still have and am happy to forward). Of course, that fee essentially doubled my quote. I declined the other coverages as American Express covers them.
During the period of time (approximately 15 minutes) that I was arguing fees and hidden small print, I listened to 3 other renters in similar arguments with the other rental agents. I've done some investigating online but cannot get a solid answer of whether this liability insurance is a Mexican government requirement, a Thrifty requirement, or a Thrifty San Jose del Cabo requirement. Whichever one it is, it is absolutely a poor form to include such a substantial mandatory fee hidden with a lengthy small print terms and conditions sheet that is not presented to the customer when they book.
What's interesting in hindsight is the number of locals who came up to me as I was leaving the arrival gates asking if I was renting a car and from whom and, when I told them, warning me that Thrifty would be charging me extra fees. I assumed they just wanted my business and would say what they needed to make the sale but it turns out I should have listened.
Part 2 - The Return. The official exchange rate on the day of my return was 11.956 pesos to $1 dollar. Upon my return I received a final bill for 2,883.23 pesos. Firstly, I don't know why I was quoted everything in US dollars up to that point only to then receive a final bill in pesos. My best guess is that allows the franchise to again increase the charge by using an inflated exchange rate. At the official exchange rate for the day, 2,883.23 pesos converts to $241.15, far above the combined charge of rate plus PLI fee of $183.62US. This is confirmed in the Thrifty return receipt which quotes the random PLI charge at 169 pesos/day which converts to $14.14US, not the $13/day I was told.
After discussing these charges with the desk agent, I asked why I was still waiting for my bill and was informed the car was being inspected for damages. He said there were two stains on the car, one by the gas tank and one on the back windshield. They appeared to be bird droppings dried in the sun, but the agent said they "might" be from an air conditioned dripping on the car. After much huddling and whispering among 5 different Thrifty people, the agent informed me that the "damage" was $105US, a number he showed me on a calculator. When I asked him how he arrived at that number he said he "had a guy". When I asked what gave his guy the expertise to arrive at such a quote from a brief examination of the stain, he provided no answer.
Anytime I am expected to pay for any damages, I expect a competitive quote. This was an arbitrary number with no basis in fact. I took pictures of the stain as well as the license of the rental car.
Unbelievably, the Thrifty agent suggested that I could clean the car myself and not incur the charge. I've never in all the times of returning a rental car had it suggested to me that I am responsible for cleaning a car. The car was not damaged. It need to be cleaned. That's part of the service I expect when I rent a car versus buying a car or borrowing one. Given I had a flight to catch, I declined the agent's offer.
Then the agent presented me with the second bill for damages, this one for 1,665pesos (1,500pesos + 11% IVA taxes) or $139.26US. Again, I asked how it had been $105 and was now, in a matter of a few minutes, much (32%) more. He said it was the exchange rate which, of course, simple math shows not to be true.
I travel regularly to Mexico. Every time I've been quoted a price in US dollars (shops, restaurants, booking agencies, etc. ), I've been able to receive and pay the bill in US dollars. It's not clear to me why Thrifty is the one exception here, unless it is again to benefit from an inflated exchange rate arbitrage program.
So, all-in-all, a $92.62 "estimated grand total" with no terms and conditions quote ended up being a 4,548.23 pesos charge, or $380.41. This is a 410% premium over the original quote!
Needless to say, I will not be renting from Thrifty in San Jose del Cabo/Cabo San Lucas again and will make the same recommendation to friends and colleagues. In addition to everything I've outlined above, I found the San Jose del Cabo desk staff to be devoid of any concern for the customer, caring only about the sale. I am hoping you or someone else at DTAG can give me valid reasons not to make a more global decision to end renting with Thrifty Car Rental and to recommend the same policy for my company and employees. I do hope something will be done to improve the customer experience in San Jose del Cabo. It reflects extremely poorly on your company's brand which up to now I viewed favorably.

I have called and talked with Mr. Saez and he promised, like 15 days ago, that he was going to mail me a report.

The guy at the counter was as sweet as can be, talking to me and my husband, saying such nice things about our newborn baby, how he wanted to have another child with his wife, made us feel comfortable and he gained our trust to later back stab us in the back. He did not explain to us that we were going to pay 26-27 dollars a day on insurance for our vehicle. I told him that I wanted to decline the insurance since I had already chosen insurance when I made the reservation online and he said that is fine.
Once we finished the approving my transactions since I was paying with debit card he said, “Okay, you sign here that you are declining the insurance and your husband here”. So I, trusting him that that was what it was I signed, lo and behold, I got charged for insurance a few days later when I saw the transaction on my bank account. I called and they said that I signed for it and I explained to them why would I have double insurance on my vehicle and they said, “Well, you signed for it.” And I said that I did not sign for that. I signed for what he was telling me which was declining the insurance. And they told me, “Well, ma'am you should have read before signing”.
Well, I agree now, not to trust anyone. The guy sure is a hustler, Hispanic light skin, baldy guy. Don’t let him trick you the way he did us by being all nice and gentlemen like, thinking he was concerned about our situation. He did not verbalize the total estimated cost to me (which I would have recognized as incorrect), only that at $250 hold would be placed on my account, which seemed reasonable.
When I went through the agreement screens on their computer, the man pushed me through the screens, telling me to just hit agree and saying generic things like "That's just for the hold on your card" and "That's just about the coverage" all of which I interpreted to mean that he'd entered what I'd requested.
Immediately after going through the screens, I looked at the bill and saw that it was nearly 3 times what I'd expected. I went back to challenge the bill and they told me there was nothing I or they could do to fix the error because I'd agreed on the computer. The general rental requirements of the general policies say: "Rental Rates: Daily Rental rates are based on a 24-hour "rental day" starting at the time of rental. The minimum charge is one day, plus mileage if applicable. The renter will be charged for each hour and/or any part of an hour in excess of a rental day the renter keeps the vehicle until the vehicle is returned up to the applicable daily rate. Mileage charges, if applicable, will be the number of miles driven as determined by the odometer readings at the beginning and end of the rental.
A return change fee of $15 will apply if you return 24 hours or more prior to your reserved return date and time. If you return 24 hours or more after your scheduled return date and time, a return change fee of $10.99 per day will apply ($54.95 maximum), in addition to any other rental charges. If the renter fails to comply with the conditions applicable to the rate, including any geographic driving restrictions, a mileage charge, surcharge or other rates may apply. "So, I expected that I would be charged for the time I exceeded the scheduled return time, that is, 3 hours and 52 minutes.

I made five phone calls to the Thrifty international phone line reservation from home in the US beforehand to make a rental car reservation, and when I made my reservation, I stated that my credit card would serve for insurance and I would decline the rental insurance, and none of the agents mentioned any problem with this. In addition, I arranged to get a 10% discount using my American Express card. Arriving at the Thrifty counter in Munich Airport Terminal 2, I was told that because the Munich airport location had had numerous problems with credit card companies refusing to pay insurance claims, that the Munich airport location's policy was to require written proof from the credit card company that that rental car would be covered.
In addition, I was told that under no circumstances could American Express be used for this, only MasterCard or Visa. As the Munich airport has no free Internet, I had to sign up for a one-hour paid service for $11.15 and downloaded both the MasterCard and Visa documents online, to show that both of my credit cards covered rental cars. When I showed this to an agent, she said I had misunderstood, and that I would require a written proof specifically for this rental reservation. As an alternative, the Thrifty insurance was $250, doubling the price of my rental. When I asked for a cheaper rate, I was told I could pay $150, but I would be charged a $1200 deductible against my credit card in case of an accident.
At this point, I gave up and went to one of the other rental car companies in the terminal and quickly obtained a rental car for with none of the run-around about insurance. If the Thrifty international reservation line had let me know during my 5 calls before the reservation while in the US that I would have to have written proof specifically covering this reservation, I have no doubt that I could have obtained this ahead of time. Also, if Thrifty has a special arrangement favoring American Express cards, why did the Munich site say that even with written proof of a specific coverage that American Express cards could not be used for insurance?

This is not the way to treat an old man with an incurable cancer, or anyone else for that matter! I am a 71-year old male from Alabama currently being treated at M.D. Anderson Cancer Center in Houston for incurable stage IV cancer. On July 1, 2010, I rented a car from Thrifty at the Houston Hobby Airport to drive to M.D. Anderson for my chemotherapy treatments. The next day, July 2nd, Houston's streets were beginning to flood as a result of heavy rains from hurricane Alex. Concerned that I might encounter flooding while trying to return the car to the Thrifty lot, I left four hours before my scheduled flight in an attempt to avoid any problems. At the intersection of Monroe and Airport Boulevard, only a few hundred feet from the Thrifty lot at 8620 Panair Road, the car stalled out.
When I called Thrifty requesting assistance, they refused to send anyone to help me. Instead, I was told to remain with the vehicle! Finally, concerned that I might miss my flight and with no other options remaining, I waded with my luggage to the Thrifty lot and office. After observing several employees standing around watching the rain, I was puzzled why they did not send someone to help me. The next insult from Thrifty occurred twelve days later when I received a damage claim in the amount of $6,454.40! I was stunned! How could an automobile that merely stalled out incur that much damage?
In correspondence sent by Thrifty to my insurance company, but not sent to me, the claim amount mysteriously rose to $6,550.40 and the following verbiage was included in their letter: "The Total Claim Amount includes the Estimated Repair Cost. We will receive invoices for the parts, parts delivery and repair charges. If the total is less than the payments received from you for the estimated costs of repairs, we will refund the difference to you. If our supplemental costs are greater, you will be billed accordingly." My insurance company subsequently paid $5,100.37 for settlement of Thrifty's claim. As I waited for documentation of the actual repair costs from an accredited repair facility before sending Thrifty any money, I began receiving threatening letters from Thrifty demanding a balance due of $1,450.03!
I called Thrifty and spoke to the Damage Recovery Agent assigned to my claim and requested documentation of the repairs and the name of the facility performing the repairs. I felt that the insurance payment would have been more than adequate to repair the vehicle, a two-year old Chrysler Sebring with 41,000 miles on the odometer. He continually attempted to evade my requests for substantiation but finally, when pressed, admitted that the vehicle was never repaired but sold at auction instead!
Then, if the vehicle was never repaired, I asked, "What is the basis for the damage estimates?" At my insistence, he agreed to provide me with a copy of the damage appraisal which had not been previously provided to me. Upon receipt of same, I discovered that the damage claim was completed in the astounding time of 66 minutes. It provided for a worst case scenario of damages to the vehicle and included the cost estimate of replacing the entire engine and associated labor costs. Even though the appraiser had identified these expenses as judgment items, Thrifty steadfastly represented those numbers, $6,392.15 as being the absolute correct damage amount.
I was told by my insurance agent that if they had known the car was sold at auction and never repaired, they would not have paid the claim which was based upon estimated repair costs. I have since spoken with and corresponded with several other representatives of Thrifty in an attempt to resolve this issue and my questions and concerns have been repeatedly ignored. The high-handedness and arrogance displayed by their personnel would cause Barney **, Nancy ** and Hank ** to turn green with envy. It is my opinion that Thrifty has committed insurance fraud, is currently attempting to commit fraud against my person by turning my claim over to a collection agency, and is possibly guilty of collusion with intent to defraud with an independently owned and operated appraisal service in Houston.

When we rented a car for a week, they tried to sell us gas in advance at $3.65 per gallon for a full tank. Gas on the island was $3.83 but we weren't sure if we would use a whole tank or be able to plan well enough to bring it back empty. They said there would be no credit for unused gas. When we declined, the agent seemed really bent out of shape and tried to insist on us buying gas from them. We still declined and told them we'd bring it back full. She said that we'd have to get the gas from a station within 10 miles of their office and show the receipt when we returned the car.
We filled up one mile from the office and returned the car full, with the receipt. The guy cleaning the car checked us in, acknowledged the receipt and told us we were good to go. On our next credit card bill, Thrifty had billed us $77.18 for gas ($5.88 per gallon). We disputed the claim. They lied to the credit card company, telling them that we returned the tank only one eighth full. Now we have to put the matter into dispute a second time and try to prove that they're lying by showing other receipts from gas we purchased on Maui.

They did not reimburse us for the time we did not have a car, nor for our trouble. Last week (3 weeks after returning the car), they charged us €30 claiming the "car was dirty". ** lie. Never again!

My travel mate and her daughter kept the car, first mistake. The next day, the car was towed from Pizza Hut on International Drive after a taxi driver saw her and her daughter walk out from the Pizza Hut and crossed the street and he called PEN Towing (kickback).
She could not get the car out of impound because she was not me. The Thrifty roadside security person she talked to said she (I) would not be charged anything more as the car was no longer in my possession. She kept a key and returned it on September 6th when we were to return, the car was in impound until September 8th! My towing and impound bill plus two extra days of rental (yes, that's right, they charged me for rental while it was impounded) came to $515.00! No matter who I talked to, they did not care nor would they refund any money. This vehicle should have been brought back to Thrifty on Friday night, but instead they waited till Wednesday and I had to pay for it. Never will I rent from them again.

There are a couple of employees that need to have an attitude adjustment or learn a better way to screw over the customer. Come on Thrifty echelon, teach the power of lying!

On our receipt it said we were charged MXN 6252.38. They took our dollar at MXN 13.50/$ (if you divide the 2 this comes to $463.13) but on my bank acct I was charged $508.70. This is not right. Don't rent from Thrifty, the customer service is terrible. My wife rented a car in Riga, Latvia in April. First, the car was given to her dirty and dusty, and they surprised her with a $1,000 refundable damage deposit. The rental was OK, but the deposit was supposed to be returned within two weeks. After a few months of emails, questions, a few returned phone calls, and different answers every time we actually spoke to the customer service in the US and Latvia, we finally got some of the money back. The kicker is that they are charging us to clean the car, which was delivered dirty and dusty. If you have a choice, rent from another company and save yourself the trouble! We are going to complain to the BBB, and hope to get the rest of our money back.

By May 25th, I received a recorded phone message from Jason ** explaining that from his records, the check was cut that day and I should receive it in two weeks. By June 10th, the check was still not received!
I called Jason back where he explained to me that he has no control over the postal services and that it is out of his hands. I then called the customer service where each and every individual I spoke to was extremely rude to me. Derrick is the only name I recorded and he was rude as well. Well, on June 15th, I finally spoke to a Caren ** who assured me the check would be cut and received on Tuesday, June 21st. Surprisingly, a month later and still no check. This is the only car rental place I have ever had problems with and I would strongly advise consumers to stay away from Thrifty Car Rental. Please post this complaint. Thank you.

Horrible experience – First, I can’t find a counter because Thrifty for some reason is the only car rental company that does not have a rental counter at the rental car terminal in terminal 3. And one has to actually be a search dog and ask to find out that you have to find it at terminal 2. But by then you had dragged your luggage through 3 huge terminals and are exhausted right here. Then, they told me when I want to pick up my car with the confirmation I had from them in hand that they are sorry but can't give me the car for the total promised on the confirmation but need to add their own insurance on it, since they don't accept American Express insurance anymore.
Apparently, that change was somewhere in the small print on page 34 of the contract. Who reads the small print every time you rent a car in case they made changes? Wouldn't you think changes are made a little more obvious somehow? Anyway, they were not willing to help me other than 'giving me the freedom' to try to get another car right there at the airport. Of course, I went for this but didn't have a good position being already there compared to what offer I could have gotten a month ago online when I made the reservation with Thrifty.
Anyway, I ended up renting for more with Europcar which was incredibly helpful right next door of counter. I emailed Thrifty when I returned back trying to explain and see if they could at least reimburse me the difference to the total they confirmed me. But they were very rude by email as well. They were just saying, “If we are not obligated and have done nothing wrong, we won't talk to you.”
So, that's my experience with Thrifty and I just want to warn everyone out there. I work as an Executive Assistant and rent a lot of cars for my company. I have never had such bad experience with customer service and I hope they feel some return for it soon. It's all about customer service. The economic damage was about $80 more. But if it wasn't for Europcar with another rental company, it could have been $230 more for only 10 days rental!

The customer service representative who assisted us was extremely rude to both my wife and me. We had no idea that my wife's credit card would be charged $500 in advance for a bill that was around $200. We asked him to refund the $500, because we changed our minds about the rental but he refused. We then asked to speak with his manager, but he said no one was available to speak with us and the charge would remain on the card whether we rented the car or not.
We were forced to rent the car because we could not afford to rent from another company if he didn't remove the first charge of $500. We paid for a full-size Dodge Avenger but got a Honda with 8 dents and had an oil light on stating "oil 15%." The Thrifty representative came out from behind the counter to get in my face, as if he wanted to fight. I was visibly upset, so someone called security to resolve the issue.
I am 75 years old, and this young man was in his mid-twenties. This was an awful experience for me and elevated my blood pressure. I will never consider using Thrifty Car Rental again.

I reserved a full size car (Ford Taurus) to be picked up 5/15/2010 at SLC. At 2:30 pm, they "didn't have any" full size vehicles. They offered us to upgrade to a SUV for $90 per day or their luxury car for $99 per day. We told her, "No, we just want the full size we reserved in January!" She said we could wait 15 or 20 minutes and she would come & get us. She hadn't come after 25 minutes so my husband went back over and she then offered him a Ford Fusion for the same price (There was no discount for a smaller car!) or, we could get a Dodge Caravan minivan for the same price. We told her before we did not need a van for just the two of us!
I was so tired of Thrifty's ** that I told my husband we would start at the end and work our way up at all car rental agencies until we found a full size car. Next to Thrifty was Advantage Car Rental & they were so helpful and although they didn't have a full size available, they took my rental copy with Thrifty & honored it with a Jeep Commander with leather seats and sunroof! Plus, the rental package included liability insurance & roadside service. We got this for $10 less than our full size car would have been with Thrifty!
We were told that Thrifty has this happen all the time! Also, they are so tight they do not have local area maps to give their customers! They bum them from Enterprise or Advantage (beside them)! They even take bunches of Advantage's maps after they close! Thrifty has been sold to Hertz & I guess they don't want to order anything else!
We rented from Thrifty once before in Detroit, MI at DTW & once again, they did not have the size car we reserved! When we drove out of the parking lot, we noticed quite a few of the requested cars sitting there waiting to be picked up! We had gotten such a good rate with Hotwire that I think they didn't want to honor their deal! I would definitely avoid the Thrifty at the Salt Lake City airport because they are a bunch of crooks!
Also, we were told the Thrifty at SLC doesn't tell you when you pick up a rental car from them, but they tack on a daily fee of $4.99 for 'rental fee'! How about those crooks? This is our first rental with Advantage and it won't be our last.

So this was done. Needless to say, I was being charged an extra $9.99 per day to have my wife as a driver also. This was not told to us by the agent. This was the most horrible experience I've ever had in renting a car. This car rental was for Sao Paulo, Brazil, one of the most busiest, traffic ridden, and dangerous cities to be driving around in without direction.
Upon arriving at the arrivals gate, no one was there to meet us. I managed to find the other rental companies and came up with enough Portuguese to ask someone at the other counters to help me find the Thrifty counter. It was not in the airport as I had thought. They radioed a Thrifty rep, who came to meet me. She didn't speak much English, so we had some confusion. When we arrived at the Thrifty counter outside the airport, I asked for a GPS. They said they didn't have one. I then asked for a map of Sao Paulo state. They gave me a map, but it was a map of the airport!
I told them I needed a map of the state so I could find my way to the city I was actually driving to. They said they didn't have one. I told them it was very dangerous for me to try to drive in Sao Paulo city with no map and no GPS to guide me in case I got lost. They didn't care. I finally told them to go to Google Maps and print me driving directions from the Thrifty location to my destination. They printed it for me, but didn't print the overall map. Then, they wanted to put a $2500 hold on my debit card without telling me. In all the rudeness possible, they told me my card didn't work. My friend used her Mastercard and it went through, so the lady at the counter would no longer talk to me, the primary renter and only driver on the vehicle!
Using the directions they printed out, paired with the crazy traffic of Sao Paulo, I found myself lost 3 times trying to get onto the highway. This, I cannot say enough, was extremely dangerous, as Sao Paulo has a high rate of crime and, a wrong turn can put you in the infamous Favelas run by drug gangs where, as two younger women traveling alone, we could be robbed, beaten, raped, and/or kidnapped easily. This was incredibly stressful. After several attempts at back tracking in the dark with a car that performs like a run down Yugo, I managed to get 5 miles out of Sao Paulo in the wrong direction. Thank God, I was able to find a very nice Pharmacist at a drug store, who spoke no English, to help us. He called a local taxi to lead us to the highway we needed to get on. It cost me $75 to get to the highway.
Needless to say, my entire stay in Sao Paulo state was very complicated, as I had no map and no GPS. Thank God, I had friends and the hotel staff in Piracicaba to help me. I inevitably spent a lot of money trying to get around where I needed to go. Because of this horrible mess, I ended up spending an additional $150 to hire a driver to meet me outside of Sao Paulo city and lead me to return the car. I returned it to the location at Congonhas Domestic Airport Thrifty counter because I didn't want to talk to the people at the Guarulhos International Airport Thrifty counter every again. I also found out that in the Congonhas airport counter, they do have GPS and they do have state maps! I'm not sure how that makes a lick of sense that the international airport counter wouldn't have GPS or state maps. I also learned that the directions these people gave me originally, sent me to the wrong side of Sao Paulo City, which cost me an additional $15 in tollway charges.
Finally, this car they gave me was a piece of **. If you took the car to 100 km/h, the engine would whine like a plane getting ready for take off. Note that the speed limit on the highways are 120 km/h. If you went up a hill, it would max at 80 km/h unless you dropped it to 4th gear to get some extra power. Sao Paolo is mountainous, so the highways are always up and down through the mountains.
I am extremely dissatisfied with this company and will never, ever rent from them again in Sao Paulo, ever! They put me in a very dangerous situation without giving a thought about safety. This entire mess cost me way more than what I should have ever paid, US$240, simply to ensure I didn't get robbed, kidnapped, beaten, raped, or killed. $240 + $184.80 + $30 (gas) = $454.80 is what it cost me for this horrible, horrible service. It is unbelievable. This message will also go to Thrifty corporate and will be posted on travel boards on the internet.

I need to inform of a recent rental at the Memphis airport where I was disrespected by the most arrogant and pompous group of people I have ever had the displeasure of dealing with in my life. When I checked in the rental vehicle, I was told that one of the bugs on the windshield was instead a small nick in the glass. I explained it had bugs on it when I rented it and I still thought it was one of the many bugs on the windshield. Then his attitude changed and the guy was now accusing me of intentionally putting a nick in a windshield and covering it with bugs. He demanded that I fill out paperwork and I explained that any info he would need would be in my Blue Chip profile.
I was told I had to fill out an accident report or I could be "arrested right now" and he said, "Did you file a police report?" I replied that I never noticed it and I asked the man not to move the car so I could take pictures of what he was referring to on the windshield and I would go inside to fill out this paperwork. When I went inside ,I asked for the rental manager and tried to better understand why this was all necessary over a nick in the windshield. I was only allowed to talk to the lead rental agent who told me I had no say in the matter I had to fill out the form.
So I reluctantly filled out the report, then when I asked the man at the counter for a color copy of the front of the report, I had my words repeated to me over and over like I was three-year old child, he repeated it over and over, "You want a copy? You want a copy? You want a copy? (I later found out that this man was the manager that I had asked for about 10 minues before, Mark S.) All we can do is make you a photo copy." I replied, "Ok, that's all I want is a color copy," and once again the same phrase was repeated back to me over and over. :So you want a copy? So you want a copy?" While he went to make a copy, I removed my camera from my computer bag to take pictures of the rental car windshield. I walked back outside. It was gone. They had moved the car. I was told that it was moved to the back and I asked why they had moved it before I took my pictures. I was informed that they can move their car anywhere they please. I explained to them that I wanted to take a picture of the nick on the glass "just as it was" without anyone moving the vehicle and making it worse. He said it was in the back now.
So I assumed that I would have to go to the car to take the photos I wanted. I calmly started to walk back to the vehicle to take a picture with my camera. Then at the back of the building this unshaven security guard came running at me before I cleared the corner of the building. It seemed like I had awoken him. He started screaming at me and yelling at me, "Get Out." There is no way that this confused security guard (with alcohol on his breath and shivering from either anxiousness or from withdraws) had any idea that I was a customer or what was going on here. As I tried to explain to him that I only wanted a picture of the windshield on the vehicle I had just rented, he got right up close to me and then he demanded that I "leave the property!" Before I could take a step he said, "Didn't you hear me? I said leave the property now."
Just then the rental car pulled up from the back and I quickly took some pictures and headed into the building to retrieve my bags and leave. The security guard, close behind me yelled, "Leave the property." I replied, "I believe I am entitled to a bus ride back to the airport?" He yelled, "You ain't entitled to nothin'. Get off of the property." I slowly walked into the building, got my bags and headed for the bus. The guard followed me into the building and kept saying, "You some sort of crazy man? You look like a crazy man. Don't you give me none of those crazy man looks. You want more trouble crazy man?" I knew that if I did or said anything his over bearing bullying would escalate out of control, so all I could do was smile at him and back away from him. I said nothing at all. I just smiled and grabbed my bags and calmly walked out backwards out of the building and got on the bus and hoped that this was the end of the Thrifty Memphis Rental nightmare.
The bus driver told the office on the radio that there were customers on board that needed to leave to catch their flights and the office replied to her on the radio, "You wait." It appeared that they were keeping the bus there thinking they were punishing me but I was not the one who was late, I had hours before my flight. I apologized to the four other car renters for the delay in the bus' departure and I explained that it was my fault for not leaving the property when I was told and that I thought I was entitled to a ride back to the airport after paying for my two day rental. The poor driver was getting frustrated and the people on the bus wanted to leave now. It was several minutes later that the driver just closed the door and headed to the gate so she could take the clients back to the airport so they would not miss their flights as they had been explaining to her for over 10 minutes.
As we were leaving the rental lot, she had to slam on the breaks because the exit gate that was open for our departure suddenly went back to the closed position and we could not get out. The driver called the office and asked what was going on? The voice on the radio said, "You wait," it was the guard on the radio. Then the security guard slowly walked out of the rental building, he meandered across the parking lot, passed along the side of the bus I was sitting on and he was staring and glaring at me the entire way. He approached the exit gate and looking straight at me he reluctantly opened the gate so the driver could do her job and get these other customers back to the airport.
I am a regional manager for a $7.5 billion company. I fly every week and I rent cars every week. I am Hertz #1 Gold, National Emerald Executive, Avis Preferred Elite, Enterprise Plus, Budget Express Gold and A Blue Chip member with you. My company has national contracts with National and Avis which includes insurance and other perks included in the rental. I am not sure how many days or how many times I have rented from you or Dollar in the last 11 months since my promotion to this position where travel is a weekly event but I know how much of my future business they will receive: zero!
Going forward, I will pay not to rent from someone who could push around and treat a customer like I was treated by Memphis staff. Their arrogant and condescending attitude demanding that I leave the property and not wanting to provide bus transportation back to the airport is something that I do not want anyone I know to experience. I am copying this letter in an email to the travel departments for every division we have at my company, to my distribution teams in my 14 states, to our legal department, to Wells Fargo Commercial Card claims division and to the customer service departments for AAA, AARP and BBB. There is no way to respond to the snobbish attitude of their staff and how much damage has been done.
I request of them to please do not contact me because I would prefer not to be threatened by anyone else from their company. I now realize that my rental business should stay with the major car rental companies with professional staff teams like National, Avis and Hertz who know how to treat regular clients. I will never do business with Thrifty or Dollar again!

Prior to returning our rental, we filled up with gas and I had the receipt in my pocket. At the return, I was asked if we filled up. I responded yes. When I got home, I was charged for gas at $7.99 a gallon (one gallon charge). I called Thrifty and was told, per the rental agreement I was required to show my receipt for gas, but they would refund the $7.99. I feel this is equal to stealing. I guess the adage, "Car Renter Beware", holds true at Thrifty. But for me I don't need to worry about renting from them again.

Reserved a rate on the Internet. Called and informed Thrifty that my ship would be a couple of days late due to bad weather. The agent confirmed that I would still get the same rate. When I arrived, I was told that the rate was more than the email rate I had received. For $10 it was not worth going finding another car rental company.
After returning the car, I found out that they had billed $15.70 more than my written agreement. Clearly, they make their money by pricking the customer with pins and needles for a few extra bucks that they probably won't notice or complain about! Will never rent from them again.

When offering prepaid fuel option, they do not disclose that the per gallon rate is before taxes. That is significant because it adds 30% to the per gallon rate. Unlike a daily rental rate, you do not expect that the gas rate will be taxed as well. So from $2.92/gallon, actual rate is $3.79/gallon or over $30 difference. You need to force them to disclose that.

On March 18, 2010, I had made a reservation for an automobile, online using Expedia, a website used by my husband's employer, from Thrifty Rent-a-car, Tampa, Florida (airport location). When I arrived to pick up my rental vehicle, the desk clerk, Sanley, noticed my reservation had all the insurance charges, included in my low-price reservation, and his obligated sales tactic of trying to push those insurance add-ons prompted a response from me, "that all those are included in my reservation".
He called his manager Tera, who explained to me that they were not going to honor my reservation, since I had a Texas driver's license, and they only allowed visitors with international driver's licenses to claim rental cars reserved from the Expedia.co.uk website.
There was nothing in my paperwork/small-print that prohibited me from booking my reservation, and I had already paid for this car rental, and it was not cancel-able, since cancellations must be done in advance, not during the car-rental pick-up time. The last thing I needed was to pay double for a rental car I had already reserved online. Manager Tera, who did not speak to me in person, but hid behind her closed office door, and spoke to me over the phone, did not budge. Therefore, I was stranded without a car in Florida, unless I got one of their cars under a "new" reservation, where this new reservation would cost me more than double my original estimate. After further bargaining, I was successful at lowering the price of the "new" reservation. Again, I would have gone to one of the other airport car rental agencies, but all were sold out due to spring break.
The unprofessional, discourteous, and inhospitable treatment I received from this rental office was infuriating. It was a crowded spring break weekend, and all the rental offices at the Tampa Airport were sold-out, and these Thrifty employees knew they had their customers. If you plan to travel to Tampa, stay far away from Thrifty, unless you feel like being taken advantage of, when you're under stressful crowded travel conditions. I will make it my personal duty to share this negative experience, with as many travelers as possible.

I left a pair of Swiss Army sunglasses in a hard case upon return of my rental. Upon my return to SC, I contacted Thrifty and spoke to a woman named Ebony. After a search, she located my glasses. I asked how I could retrieve them. She said she would send them to my address COD. By mid-November, I called Thrifty back and spoke to the manager, whose name I do not recall. She said she would have Mario, the man who actually recovered the glasses and who is her assistant to call me.
I made several calls back to her over the course of the rest of November 2009, December 2009 and January 2010. Finally, Mario called me and he said he would look again for the glasses. I offered to pay to have them sent to me. Well, that is the last I have heard from Thrifty, even after repeated calls to the manager on her cell phone and the desk. I have rented from Thrifty at this location previously as well as other locations. Please help me in the recovery of my glasses, I will pay for shipment. I contacted my insurance company AAA and advised them I didn't cause any damage. Thrifty would not comply with AAA and sent documentation showing the damage done. Verbally they stated the suspension and steering was damaged. In December, my agent was told verbally to close the case it would not be pursued. I sent by fax a copy of the letter they sent showing the case was closed. In January I received another generic statement demanding money stating they hadn't heard from me.
I have copies of the faxed letter with the confirmation attached. My agent noted there was additional mileage on the car and the repair work was not done until one week later than when I had returned the car. Thrifty emailed my agent and stated there was damage done to the gas tank and needed to be repaired. If the steering was so bad how did the extra mileage get on the car? AAA has denied the claim. Thrifty Rental Car now puts a hold on all major credit cards for $350 even if you only rent their car for one day. In addition, they try to force you to buy their rental insurance, saying your personal car insurance is not acceptable. My rental charge would have been less than $70 but when you add the extra hold of $280 with the rental insurance, my card would have been charged over $400 for a two-day rental of an economy car. Sure, I would have gotten the $270 back eventually, but I thought the purpose of using a major credit card was to avoid those fees and extra charges. I am furious and disagree with your findings, I personally vacuum the floors and seats before returning all of my rental vehicles. The vehicle in questioned was given to me needing this service and the seats were not in perfect conditions. I didn't complained because it wasn't excessive. I took the vehicle to the nearest station and vacuumed it myself. Upon returning my rental to the inspector, I made sure he inspected the inside and out before leaving as I always do, so nothing like this would ever happen. I rented a car from Thrifty for four days. I knew I might be an hour late bringing the car back and asked on the front end what my charges would be. They told me $13 per hour. I agreed to that. When I brought it back, I was 1 hr and 4 minutes late. Four minutes I spent waiting in line to return it. They charged me $26 for that. And they did agree to credit me the $13 for the four minutes. But I had an upgrade and an additional driver and they charged me another full day because I was an hour late.
I was never told I would be charged for this or I would have made sure I got that car back in time. It actually cost me another $50 to be an hour late. They told me since I went over the 24 hrs, I was charged these rates automatically and nothing they could do. This is a rip off. I asked them where in the contract does it state that additional charges will apply for being over the 24 hrs? They said it doesn't, that it is assumed. Well, they need to explain on the front end better and put it in writing! I will never rent from Thrifty again and will advise all renters to watch for these 'gotcha' fees. You think you are getting a good deal on a car until they attach all these fees to it.

He printed out the receipt and asked me to initial by the LDW saying that I was declining it. After I initialed the form, I handed it back to him and without my knowledge, he circled accept on the charge and I didn't realize it until I had left and got to my hotel room. When I returned the car, I was told that I had to call the company and file a complaint, which I did. I have a case #xxxxxxx. I have tried to call them multiple times for a resolution to this problem and was transferred from person to person and then told to call back in three weeks. They have made no effort to resolve this.
I feel that I was ripped off $160.93 plus tax and that Thrifty intentionally set out to rip me off. I still have the receipt and it took three of us to figure out that I had been charged because the receipt is so hard to understand. The LDW is on one side of the receipt with absolutely no total on it anywhere and the rest of the charges are on the other side and the total charge includes the LDW but is not itemized on that side of the receipt.
This is a very slimy way to do business and I want my money back. I believe the person at the counter purposely tried to scam me. Maybe they get a commission for every LDW they sell. I don't know. But what I do know is that this was no mistake. It was intentional! Please contact me at your earliest convenience.

This was my first time renting a vehicle and my last time doing business with Thrifty. We live in a Denver suburb and needed a vehicle from Jan 1st through the 3rd. The only Thrifty location in the Denver metro area is at the airport. So, I drove myself to the airport to pick up our vehicle. This was my first mistake. While checking in with your employee (Nell), I was informed that I could not park my vehicle in Thrifty's gigantic parking lot for more than 24 hours. This is because certain travelers park in the lot (illegally) then take the shuttle to the airport and go on their trip, basically parking for free. I understand that, however, I was not heading to the airport, I was renting a car.
My rationale seemed illogical to both Nell and her other co-workers who, by the way, could clearly hear our conversation (and my frustration) yet were more interested in watching the Macy's Parade on TV. I could never get a logical/professional answer to my question. "Why can't I park here for two and a half days while I rent your car?" Apparently, I'm the first person in the history of renting a car from Thrifty in Denver who did not arrive to that location by plane/shuttle/limo/taxi/friend. Their only response was for me to take a shuttle bus to the airport long term parking lot, pay to park, take another shuttle to the airport terminal, then take another shuttle back to Thrifty and pick up my car. All this while looking at around 500 parking spaces which were available. This was beyond ridiculous. When I asked to speak with a supervisor or manager, I was told there were none available. Shocker.
Oh, before I could continue with my rental agreement, Nell informed me that it was mandatory to purchase additional auto coverage. I told her that my own auto insurance/AAA/credit card provide adequate coverage. Yet she again demanded that I select an option. When I did, she totaled up my charges and asked me to sign. When I inquired about several additional charges that were included, she could not explain them. She said, ready for this. "I can explain them after your card is charged." Hilarious.
Now, on your website, I read this about additional insurance: Before deciding whether to purchase LDW, the renter may wish to determine whether their own automobile insurance or credit card agreement provides coverage for rental vehicle damage or loss and determine the amount of the deductible under your own insurance coverage. The purchase of LDW is not mandatory. LDW is not insurance.
Time was getting tight so I decided to get to the shuttle. While exiting the facility, I asked the parking lot attendant how to get to the nearest long term lot. We started chatting about my situation and he recommended I park in the Thrifty employee lot. The same lot I suggested 20 minutes earlier. I pulled into the lot, went inside the adjacent maintenance building, and introduced myself to the manager of that facility. He said it would be no problem to park there until Sunday. When I arrived back on Sunday, my vehicle was right where I left it. I doubt anyone will read this, much less respond with anything but a canned letter/email. Lets see what happens.

We rented an intermediate size vehicle from Thrifty at the Milwaukee airport location for one week in June of 2009. We were supposed to get a Chrysler Sebring type vehicle. Instead, we got a very used, old Jeep Patriot with bald tires and a lot of problems and 35,000 miles on it. We immediately complained and were told it was the only vehicle available and that the entire town was "sold out" of rental cars. The guy had the gall to say the car had absolutely no damage on it. I went over it with him in the dark garage and it had damage on every single side. We were very upset about the condition of the tires and the mileage. We would never drive a vehicle in that condition at home.
To make matters even worse, they would not allow my husband to have his name on the rental. He had been blacklisted by Dollar at the same airport 4 years earlier. They apparently are the same company. On that rental, we had a blowout of a bald tire 1 mile after leaving the airport. We changed it and immediately returned the car for a new one. Over 3 months later, we got a bill for the tire damage of $175. Our credit card would not pay it as too much time had gone by. They called and called and finally my husband paid the bill in full but apparently he is on some blacklist to not rent to now.
We drove the Jeep for a week. It was scary with the rough highways in Wisconsin and the bald tires. One night, we were in a rainstorm and of course, the wiper blades were rotted. The entire front end was out of alignment and the back right tire area made a whining noise. I was so happy to get back to the Milwaukee airport alive and without having a blowout. We looked at two other cars in their lineup when arriving and we saw bald tires on the new vehicles too. I would never rent from this company again. Their vehicles are unsafe.

I booked a car through car rentals and was given the total price of $77.95 from Thrifty at the end of the online reservation process. When I arrived at the office of Thrifty Car Rental near Chicago O'Hare airport on the afternoon of June 11, 2009, I presented the reservation details to the person manning the counter (I believe his name was Rihani.). He then offered me a Ford Fusion.
This was fine, but the total chargeable came up to $191.09. I was shocked by this, as the new price represented a near 250% increase on what I was expecting to pay! I asked him why the amount was so much, and he said this amount included the insurance fees (loss damage waiver, uninsured motorist protection and supplemental liability). I understood that these fees were optional, so I informed him that I did not want to take out the extra insurance premium and that I just wanted to pay the originally quoted amount of $77.95.
He then said that under those circumstances, he was unable to offer me a Ford Fusion or any other car but that I could take a minivan if I wanted to. Now, I understand that with a wild card booking, I might get a larger car; but I was not expecting a minivan. The website quotes a "mid-size or larger car." I do not consider a minivan as being a car, and I was not comfortable with the idea of driving something so large.
More conspicuously, if his first offer was a Ford Fusion, why couldn't he have honored that without forcing me to purchase the optional insurance? I fail to understand why one would be allowed to rent a minivan without purchasing insurance but that the reverse is true when wanting to rent a car. It seems to be a policy of double standards.
I have called customer service to complain, but they were of no help. They said the best way to resolve the situation was to return the car and cancel the rental. But they also said there was no guarantee that any cancellation would be honored. From the car rental rate of USD 77.95, I had to pay USD 191.09 due to the optional insurance that was tacked on emotional grief, arguing with sales person who is out to try to make a quick buck and branch supervisor who was rude and equally unhelpful and out to cheat unsuspecting customers.
I was attending a seminar in St Charles at the time, and I didn't have the time to risk a two-hour return journey to see if they would cancel my rental.I feel cheated, as I was put in a position where I had no choice but to take out the insurance premium, even though it was clearly optional. However, he refused to rent me the car without adding on the optional items. I shall never be renting from Thrifty again.

After closer inspection, we realized that both rear tires were in horrible, horrible condition. They had both worn through the steel belts and all the way to the core. This rental car had only 22,000 miles on it! Because we were in the mountains and didn't have anywhere to wait, we had to drive back to our residence (approx. 20 more miles) on the donut tire as well as the other bad tire.
Thrifty did replace the car but because there was a wait for the other car, we weren't able to do anything until about 8 pm that night. I was offered a pitiful $25 refund by the local office on our $224 bill. When we returned the replacement car, the manager told us that they had problems with locals renting cars and taking off the good tires and replacing them with bad tires. So the company knows about these bad tires, yet does nothing about it! I do have pictures of these tires and would be happy to share them.

I asked the clerk to put on the contract that I would prepay gas. I repeated to him that I wanted prepaid fuel. He acknowledged what I said. I expected that it was on the contract. When I returned the car, I found out that it was not on the contract and I was charged $83.88 for fuel. I rented a Chrysler Sebring, which holds 13 gallons. The prepay charge is $2.07 per gallon. The contract states that when I returned the car, it had 2/8 of a tank of fuel left. That means to fill it, it needed 9.75 gallons. $83.88 divided by 9.75 gallons means I am paying $8.60 per gallon. The contract price is around $7.00 per gallon if you rent the car without pre-paid fuel. This means that I was frauded and overpaid by $63.70. This is not a lot of money (fortunately), but by gauging by all the other complaints, practices of deceit and fraud are common for this company.

My complaint about Thrifty is about how they resolve damage claims and determine the amount due. Thrifty tried to double charge me on expenses. They charged my credit card $327.60 on August 13, 2008 and never notified me while pursuing a claim through their subrogation department for $450. I discovered the August 13th charge in December after I had Visa all lined up to pay out to Thrifty and settle the claim. Like other people on this blog, Thrifty had threatened to sue me in October of 2008 if I did not pay them right away. I only had the claim for a little over a month after they submitted their claim about 45 days after servicing the rental car.
This time, the request was $450 while at the same time knowing that they had already charged my credit card for $327.60. I requested for a reversal of the credit card charge so that Visa would pay them the correct amount since they had not factored in the first payment on my credit card. The individual, McCarty, referred me to corporate customer service as she was not going to assist. Corporate customer service after I contacted them referred me to subrogation where McCarty worked and said they would not assist. Thrifty has split the claim into this strange arrangement where corporate customer service handled part of the claim and subrogation part of the claim.
Now, subrogation has presented documentation that shows an adjustment on the initial rental agreement where they presented documentation in September that did not have the adjustment, so either Thrifty tried to double collect on the account ignoring the initial documentation and presented me with an alternate copy in September 2008 or they purposely concealed an amount of approximately $70 which is the difference between the $189.90 they are saying that they are going to collect on where the balance based on their initial subrogation documentation in October should be $450 - $327.60 = $122.40. I have told them over three emails starting in December to date that they have their numbers wrong, but they don't cooperate and get the math right.

On April 4th at 3:00 PM, I walked into Thrifty Car Rental and asked to lease a large car. The salesperson stated that she did have one but it was not clean yet. I agree that I would take it as long as there was no smell of smoke inside the car. While doing the paper work, she read off a charge of $9.95 - some type of insurance. I didn't want it but she explained that as long as I was using a debit card, I had to take it. To my surprise, this was for everyday I had the rental - I found out the next day.
Now here's where it got crazy. The rental car's front end was damaged to the point of noise, and the oil light came on as soon as I left the rental company. I woke up on the morning of the 6th and looked over my paper work, and found all of the hidden fees. I took the car back because it was not in good condition. I asked if I could get a car that would make a trip out of town, and said I needed a discount for all the hell I went through. Matthew pretended to give me a good discount. I stopped and read the paperwork and find out it was a joke and a lie.
What I asked Matthew was to let me lease it for the week; I only rented it for 3 days and thought it would be wise to extend it because I was going out of town. It cost $174 for 3 days and $209.00 for the week, plus $156 for all the other fees he pretended to take off for my troubles with the damaged car they knew about. At first he told me he had no more cars to give me or switch me in. I was angry with these people, plus they charged me the airport fee of $12.95. I had no clue how to remove it. He finally removed it, but explained that they had charged me airport fees before, and did not credit me for that. I have never rented or called from the airport ever.
What type of business is these people running that allow adding charges to you that they never told you about? I learned from an honest employee that this happens all the time and customers come back to return the cars and really are so upset. So a company that allowed their employees to be put in front of angry people and get yelled at and threatened, while he rakes in the stolen hidden fees from the people who try to trust them. I will check into some legal advice. I would like to see this company put out of business. Matthew is so not into his work. One of Thrifty employees told me that Matthew is on some type of drugs and was taking them the day I was there. I will never lease from this place again, and will do my best to send emails to all my friends and others about this rip-off

I reserved a 7-seater van. I was told when I arrived that they did not have a 7-seater; they would substitute a 9-seater. I told them I did not want a bigger vehicle as it would use more fuel and space. They then said I had no choice as they did not have the car I reserved 3 months in advance. Then I was told since it was a 9-seater, that I must buy the 30-euro-a-day insurance, which I declined. Then they demanded I leave a 2,000-euro deposit with my cc. I had no choice as I needed a car. I did not need a 9-seater with the extra costs. The van looked as if it had problems as the spare tire tools were loose in the trunk.
When I returned the car, they checked it like I've never seen a company check. Underside, under the hood, each tire, each window, and details inside - something they did not do when I picked up the car. Then the guy checking stated the spare tire was stolen. It was obvious that the previous renter had taken the car out of Germany to France and by the tools, they had tire problems and perhaps the spare was not put back. No one checked this when I picked up the car. Who checks for the spare when you rent? On the contract, it did not state it came with a spare. They then wanted to keep the 2,000 euros for the loss of a spare tire. I did not want a 9-seater from the start; thus, I was forced to take a bigger and more expensive vehicle.

The following is the text of an email I sent Thrifty. This is one of three; I also sent one on one of their consumer complaint forms online. When I didn't receive a response, I sent this one; and subsequently, I sent another to the name of someone I found at corporate headquarters. I did not receive a response to any: I am writing in response to a letter I recently received from Seymour Tiger, Operations Administration of Thrifty Car Rental, regarding a rental I had in Florida from 12/7-13. This letter informed me of a $25 charge to my credit card as a result of a 50 cent toll that was allegedly not paid during the rental period. This is absolutely false, as my colleague and I paid this toll in cash as 2 quarters directly to a tollbooth attendant. If we had not paid, I don't know how we would have been able to proceed through the booth.
In addition, I am frustrated by other aspects of the rental experience. I initially requested a compact or economy car (I'm not sure which, but I imagine it's in your records, as I reserved online). After waiting in line for an inordinately long time in Orlando, the rental agent convinced me to upgrade the car class by telling me that in addition to having more amenities on the car, I would be able to have my colleague, Mr. **, as an additional driver without incurring charges for this. He specifically remembers her saying this as well.
While I realize I reflected my understanding of this by initialing the appropriate place on the agreement that is definitely contradictory to her explanation and very frustrating, we were only traveling together for a portion of the week, and I certainly would not have paid $9.99/day for an additional driver for an entire week had I understood that to be the case. It also appears that I was charged for an extra day on this weekly rental ($12.34) when I only had the rental for 7 days, and in fact returned it in the morning of the seventh day. This whole experience was frustrating, culminating in the $25 charge for failure to pay a toll which was definitely paid. I would like to hear from someone at Thrifty as soon as possible to clarify these issues. At this point, I am very disappointed with your customer service.

When I pulled in the van to the return area, I received the receipt, which did not reflect any break in the price per early return. The lady checking in the vans told me to go to the counter to have it sorted out. When I got to the counter, I was told they don't give breaks even if the car was brought in early. She said it was in the contract. I said no problem, I'll just bring back the van on the 18th which was the original return date. The lady at the counter said she could not give us the vans back and will also charge us an early return fee. I left immediately without incident. I decided to call customer service explain the problem to them, well they hung up on me. I have rented from Budget, Avis, Enterprise, Alamo without any problems. When I pulled into the Thrifty Gas Station near my home on the 4th of July, the gas station was quite busy. Unfortunately, it didn't occur to me that this was completely overwhelming for the cashier. I paid her $30.00 cash for gas on #8. When I went back to pump #8, it had not been reset to zero, it still said $29.60 from the previous customer. After a few minutes I had to go back in the store to ask her to reset it.
After it was reset to zero, I put the nozzle in the gas tank and proceeded to pump 46 cents of gas, at which amount the pump shut off. When I again went inside to ask her to reset it, there were several people waiting in line and the cashier was clearly overwhelmed. She insisted that I had pumped the $29.60.
She would not give me the $30 gas that I had paid for, and she would not give me my money back. She gave me the receipt for the previous customer's $29.60 purchase, and later I asked for the receipt for MY 40 cent (it actually pumped 46 cents) purchase. I tried calling the police department and was told it was a civil matter. I was told by the cashier (Pamela?) that I would have to speak to the manager, Darrell G. Whenever he happens to BE there? I have been buying gas for many, many years, and this is the first time a gas station has STOLEN my money!
I was unable to buy gas. Or food. That $30 was all the money I had. I am very poor and on a fixed Social Security Disability income. I have to choose between food or gas. This incident has raised my blood pressure so much it could give someone a heart attack or stroke.

I rented a vehicle from Thrifty at the airport on 6/11 returning on 6/13. I had reserved the vehicle online at Thrifty's website and was told the cost would be around $131.00. The total cost actually was $279.84. The additional charges were Loss Damage Waiver for 2 days at $18.95 a day. I was lead to believe that this was the charge to decline insurance coverage and that I had to take this. I have since found out I did not have to take this coverage.
I called Thrifty and they took that charge off. My big concern is that I was charged tax on the total amount of the bill including the pre paid gas. The tax was already paid on the gas why should they be charging it again. Also should they be charging tax on the 6% RI rental car charge and other service charges.
When I called thrifty they did agree to remove the loss damage waiver charge but insisted the other charges should be taxed and refused to remove them.

After comparing rental car prices for our upcoming vacation in Florida I found Thrifty to have the best rates so reserved a car for the date of 6-9-08 and to return on 6-14-08. My quote online was 163.10. When we arrived we got our Pt Cruiser at 166.68. We did not get anything but base car because we have insurance that covers us in a rental so we declined that and brought our own gps. We returned the car fully gased up an hour and a half before it was due. There was a guy with a ticker tape machine that clicked out a small receipt upon returning.
We got on our bus to the airport and I noticed that the charges were very confusing and did not make sense and a final charge of $470.44. I knew that could not be right since I had my copy of original charges with my initials on the quote of 166.00. I received my American Express bill with the charge of $470.44. I was MAD! I immediately contacted DTG Operations DBA Thrifty Car Rental and spoke with Janiece who was at first as lost as anyone could be concerning these charges. Finally after asking for a supervisor she came back with giving a credit of $259.76. After hanging somewhat satisfied I realized I was still out $44.00.
I then contacted them again and they said they cannot refund more than that because they have to see what the taxes...fees...etc. was going to be which would eventually...might be...credited also. At that point I said thank you and hung up. I then called American Express and opened a dispute for the $303.76 overcharge since I will not wait to see if I am credited or not. I will not deal with this unscrupoulous company again!

I picked up a rental from Thrifty Miami Airport around 1am Wednesday May 29th. I was never given any form to sign of to indicate any damage before picking up the car. I was asked to inform about damage at the booth, but it was quite dark and would been difficult to identify anyway. I noticed another traveler who actually walked around his rental with a flashlight,in hindsight I should have done the same. However, this was done at the exit booth so it was causing quite a bit of traffic and people were getting annoyed (1am). It can seem like they deliberately did not hand out these forms and rush people to inspect their cars in the dark at the check-out booth to put customers in the position I now find myself; being accused of causing damages in at least 3 different and very separate locations on a car that I had in my possession for less than 24 hours. This is especially odd since I have not caused any damage to any of my 3 cars over the last 5 years.
I drove the car to the hotel a few miles away, parked it and took of for a few meetings around Miami and returned the car around 5pm same day. At no point was I in any accident or caused any damage to the car. I was quite surprised when I was informed that there was some minor damage (scratch) on right front of the car and I had to go into the office with the slip he handed me indicating the damage.
I signed the document and rushed of to the airport (late for a flight) after taking a few pictures of the car as I was concerned if they attempted to pin that damage on me they might try to add more as well.I have just received the documentation from Thrifty where they have actually added more damage to the form after I left their office (different handwriting etc.) I have been presented with a bill for $630.88 which I will fight. I tried to reach the rep who signed the letter, but she was not available. Anyway, they have included some of the same pictures as I took, in some damage is clearly old as plastic from bumper is faded from the sun, hardly something that will develop in a matter of hours. I rented this car for about 16hrs, parked in hotel and corporate parking lots, still they claim I have managed to sustain damage on the rear bumper, front right side and left door...
I will most likely report this to the police as well as I don't take this lightly. This is nothing less than a attempt to defraud a customer.

When we arrived we found that they indeed were not located at the airport and that we had to take a shuttle to their facility. When we arrived they shoved the agreement in front of us and told us to sign which we did. I had told them that there was only one driver when I booked the rental car but they assumed I was another driver and then they charged us for two drivers.
I never drove the car and Roger drove it the whole time we were there. the charges for the extras that they assured me was approximately $163.08. I booked the rental. The total price including $109.89 for a second driver which I did not ask for came to $291.59 which is far more than they quoted. I realize there is tax etc but did not know until we left that they charged us for two drivers which is rediculous when I would not have told them there was more than one driver they just assumed because we were together that I would drive too.
I know they asked for my license but I just thought this was routine. Please tell me what can be done about the overcharge? On the fourth renovation of the contract, my wife went there to contact Dixon for another month of rent, upon arrival, she requests Dixon to keep this same car for another month. Unfortunately, she met this very arrogant, non-professional lady called Valerie,General Manager of that Trifty branch on Mason and O'ffarel Streets in San Francisco. This lady, who call herself a Manager, treated my wife like a nobody, disrespected her and screamed over this guy Dixon(who has been doing great business for the company), saying this car could not be rented anymore, because of oil changes.
Dixon ment to say something and she screams Clear and Loud : SHUT YOUR MOUTH NOW, in front of the costumers, in the midle of the store. My wife, not used to these kinds of situatons, tried to say to Mrs.Williams that she was a frequent client, why was she doing that, Mrs, Williams was rude and said she could not rent the same car or model and that's it. On 8/12/07 I arrived at Manzanillo airport in Mexico, the Thrifty agent told me that the Orbitz rate of $71.98, under which I have reserved the car through Orbitz was wrong, it should have been $201. Left with no real choice at that airport, I agreed to the increase and signed the rental contract.
I picked up a Dodge Stratus with 54,000 Km, it had a loud, clearly audible rumbling noise emanating from the front ends, and it felt excessively spongy and lethargic when it bounced over the many speed bumps on the road in Manzanillo; a strong indication that the shocks and struts were in very poor condition. Also the back seats were broken and sunk in when sat on. Nevertheless, given that it was Mexico, I assumed that it was nothing out of the ordinary to have a rental car in poor condition and high mileage. Besides, the 45 minutes drive between the airport and my hotel made me decided to just stick with it.
During the 7 days, from time to time, the car's lower right front panel would come unattached, I would just push it back in, to its mounting clips on upper panel, until it came off and just hanging loose again.
At the end of my trip on 8/20/07, I drove it back to the airport, the AC stopped working, and a black rubber flap about a foot square came off the hanging lower front panel, flapping in the wind and against the right front tire. Anyway, I was able to make it back to the airport and returned the car.
After checking the car upon my report of the problems, the Thrifty manager told me that the oil pump was leaking oil because, she determined, that I must have run over something. She also mentioned dirty muddy water (which was from the rain in the previous several days and the muddy sections of some roads) -- and I will be responsible for the repair cost. I told her that since I was not offered to inspect the oil pump prior to renting, there was no way for me to know what was the condition of the oil pump, for all I know, the car could very well had an oil leak long before I picked up the car, therefore I would not pay for it. She had since charged $1,425.23 on my credit card which I have filed a dispute with my credit card company.
So there you have it -- Thrifty at Manzanillo airport used deceptive, low rates at Orbitz to lure renters, then charged the higher, normal rate once they showed up. Provided a beat-up junk that had numerous pre-existing mechanical problems through years of traveling the bumpy roads of Manzanillo. And, if something goes wrong as hoped and expected, then charge the renter for the repair costs. Sounds like a classical third world fraud to cheat the tourists.
They charged me $1425.23 on my credit card which I'm disputing.

For a trip to Romania in June 2006, we made a two week reservation with Thrifty for an Opel Zafira from the USA, for the amount of $1,497.94. We were looking for a minivan with seven seats, and we were not familiar with the Opel Zafira car make. So we called Thrifty and made the reservation by phone, and we were assured that this minivan? will fit seven people and luggage.
We went to the Thrifty counter in Romania, at the Bucharest Otopeni airport, and once again asked about the car size, only to receive the same response. Big mistake not to check the car before signing the contract and giving away the credit card information!! We had the very unpleasant surprise to find that the minivan? was more like a station wagon, with 5+2 seats, if you pulled out the two small seats in the luggage area, there was aboslutiley no room left for any luggage at all. So we went back to the counter, returned the contract, and refused to rent, as they could not offer any larger minivan.
So WE NEVER RENTED THE RESERVED CAR from Thrifty. We were misinformed TWICE by Thrifty about the size of the car. The Thrifty counter employee told us we would see a refund within days. Thriftys misleading manner about the car size has caused us great inconvenience, as we found ourselves at the Romanian airport after a long flight, with three small children and two elderly parents. We had to pay for two taxis to take us to the first destination, then look for another car to meet our needs.
Upon our return from Romania, there was no refund to our credit card. We called Thrifty multiple times, and although the American Thrifty employees tell us that we are entitled to a full refund, the case opened at the end of June was never resolved. We opened a dispute case with the credit card company, but that has not helped either until the time I am filling out this complaint. Once again, they sent us the copy of the contract and credit card receipt as mailed by the Romanian Thrifty franchise.
