I will never rent from Hertz again unless they clean up their act or in this case the car I rented. I needed a car for a couple days because mine was in the shop. I went through my AAA membership for a discount. I chose a Hertz near me. I got a car but it was filthy inside and out and it stinks. I mean the inside is gross.

Absolutely ridiculous. Hertz is one of the greediest rental car companies I’ve ever dealt with. I forgot to fill up the gas before returning the car — my mistake — but they charged me $148.50. Then I used a toll road that cost about $10, and somehow that turned into a charge of $100. It feels like every additional charge gets multiplied by 10. I understand paying extra fees when necessary, but these amounts are completely unreasonable and feel like a blatant money grab. I honestly have nothing good to say about this experience. Never again.

Reserved a car at the Santa Rosa Airport 2 months prior to my trip. Go to the airport and there were no clean cars available. People had been waiting 2 hours to get a car. Ended up having to rent from another vendor at well over double the price. Why reserve a car if they are not going to be available. They know well in advance how many they are going to need. So much for being a gold customer.

Do not rent from Hertz at Shannon airport (owned by a company called Ryan's Investment s). They are running a windscreen scam on customers who rent with credit card insurance claiming damage the size of a pin head and charging for full replacement $2200 US (which they do not ever do). Our large party rented 4 cars. Two had to pay 20 dollars a day for Hertz insurance, the remaining 2 brought letters from their credit card company stating full coverage. Both cars with credit card coverage were assessed $2k for the same microscopic marks that no driver would have seen at the time of rental. They looked like specs of dirt or a bug mark that they circled. Hertz's own damage assessment was "very light". My last correspondence to them after they denied my appeal.

I have notified the car Rental Council of Ireland since Hertz is charging me the full price to replace a windshield that they are never going to replace. Your own damage assessment says "very light". It looks like a bug mark and no renter would recognize that as "damage". They would be looking for cracks or significant chips out of the windscreen. Unfortunately, as a consumer, I believe that future renters of this car will be charged for pre existing damage like I was. Please send me a dated invoice from the windscreen company that replaced it. In the meantime, I feel I must alert via social media not to rent from Hertz at Shannon Airport since 2 out of the 4 car renters in our party had the same "damage" assessment because we had insurance thru a credit card and not directly thru Hertz. An extremely poor business practice to an audience that Hertz assumes are one time customers.

My experience at the Kansas City Airport Hertz location raises serious concerns about Hertz Management both at this location and at headquarters. They lack proper procedures. The first vehicle assigned to me had already been rented to another customer, who was sitting in the car. The second vehicle had a flat tire. The third vehicle had a dent. Before I accepted the third vehicle, a Hertz employee by chance noticed the damage, completed a damage report, and gave me a copy. I also took photographs of the dent before leaving the lot.

After I returned the vehicle, Hertz emailed me claiming I had caused the dent. I immediately responded with my photographs, reminded them that their own employee had documented the damage before I took possession of the vehicle, and simply asked for an apology. Instead, I received a generic response that ignored everything I had written. Shortly afterward, I was directed to an outside damage collection company. Every response since then has ignored the documented evidence and my explanation. The most troubling part is not my individual case. It is the process. If Hertz practice is to ignore its own damage report, ignore photographs taken before the rental, and continue pursuing a customer for pre-existing damage, how often does this happen to customers who do not have photographs or documentation? If the employee had failed to notice the dent before renting the vehicle, I would have had no independent proof.

I have also been unable to reach anyone at the Kansas City Airport location. The published phone number is effectively unusable. Even the option for local businesses or insurance agents simply rings, then disconnects. Other menu options end with the call being disconnected after recorded messages. There is no published management email address or direct management phone number. I forwarded this issue to Hertz customer service at two different email addresses. Both acknowledged receiving my messages, yet every response has been a generic form letter directing me back to the damage collection process while ignoring the evidence and the questions I raised.

This is not simply poor customer service. It appears to be a process that allows documented pre-existing damage to be pursued without anyone reviewing Hertz's own records. That should concern every customer. They should be heading to a class action or notice by an attorney general if this is their normal procedure.

I had a very disappointing experience with Hertz. The customer service was poor from start to finish, and the return process was handled carelessly. The return agent failed to properly check my vehicle back into the system, even though I returned it on time. Two days later, Hertz’s records still showed that I had the vehicle in my possession, causing unnecessary stress and inconvenience. A simple step during the return process could have prevented this entire situation. I expected much better from a company of this size. I hope Hertz improves its customer service and ensures employees properly complete vehicle returns to avoid putting other customers through the same experience.

The whole point of a reservation is so they save a car for you so that one is available when you arrive. I've rented dozens of cars and I opted for Hertz this time because they're closer to where I live. Never again. The first time I thought was maybe a fluke because of the World Cup. Today I learned that they simply don't have enough cars ever and they make everyone wait for hours on end. Today I also said I didn't have time to wait and that I wanted to cancel. I was told "You're free to go", but they didn't cancel the reservation in their system so I'm being charged a "No show fee". I've read similar reviews now on Yelp. This company will use loopholes to steal your money. Do not support them.

1 Star — Beware of Unexpected Add-On Charges and Document the Vehicle Carefully. My experience with Hertz was extremely disappointing and costly. I strongly recommend choosing another rental company and reviewing the many similar consumer complaints posted online before renting from Hertz. My online rental agreement showed a total cost of approximately $495, including taxes. The only additional option I knowingly authorized was for Hertz to refill the gas tank when I returned the vehicle. However, Hertz treated my verbal agreement for the gas service as approval for numerous other optional charges that I did not knowingly request or agree to. Those charges added approximately $795 to the rental, bringing the total amount charged to my American Express card to $1,290.

I disputed the additional charges with American Express and provided documentation supporting my position. When I asked American Express to provide copies of all receipts or agreements that supposedly contained my signature authorizing these charges, I was told that no signed receipts were available. Nevertheless, American Express declined to refund the disputed amount and advised me that my remaining option was to pursue legal action.

After consulting with my attorney, I was advised that a lawsuit could cost between $5,000 and $8,000, with little likelihood of recovering the disputed amount. As a practical matter, an individual consumer cannot afford to fight a large corporation over a charge of this size. The big company wins—not because the customer is necessarily wrong, but because the cost of challenging it is prohibitive. What makes this even more troubling is that Hertz had been recommended through organizations such as AARP and AAA, which gave me a false sense of confidence when making the reservation.

My advice is simple: Do not rely solely on the online quoted price. Do not sign or verbally agree to anything at the rental counter until every charge and optional service has been individually explained and either accepted or declined in writing. Take photographs of every page and demand a printed final agreement before leaving.

Just as importantly, take detailed, time-stamped photographs and video of the entire vehicle when you pick it up and again when you return it. Photograph every side of the car, the wheels, windshield, windows, roof, bumpers, interior, fuel gauge, and mileage. Hertz and other rental companies may use automated or AI-assisted inspection systems that identify dents, scratches, broken glass, or other possible damage. Without your own time-stamped documentation, preexisting damage could potentially be attributed to your rental period. Do not assume that a quick walkaround is enough. Document the vehicle thoroughly before driving away, and report every visible defect in writing. This review may be my only meaningful recourse. Based on my experience, I will never rent from Hertz again, and I strongly encourage other consumers to protect themselves and find another rental company.

7/23/2026. I had the absolute worst experience today at the San Diego Airport with your gold member Plus service and manager. You've lost a customer because of it. I'm sure you're going to lose more after the experience I had today as well as several other customers. Whoever was working the Gold Plus Membership desk at 5pm time frame was the absolute worst customer service I have received in quite a while. I am out here to spend time with my elderly parents because they are declining in health rapidly. I And a gold member plus I was told to go look at the board to find out where my car assignment was Period. The board told me I needed to go see customer service. When I went there it was because I needed to put a credit card on file which I did, which happened to be my company credit card.

After asking to confirm that I work for the company and showing proof, I was told they would take it. But then because my trip was a personal trip, I was told they would not take it anymore. The last time I used your company for a rental, I used my company credit card and it was accepted, no questions asked. So then I said, okay I will put it on my debit card but then was told it's going to be $500 instead of $200. That is a lot of money that was going to be withheld for me during the duration of my trip. I called my stepfather who was willing to put his card on file but they refused that as well.

I then put money on one of my credit cards that would immediately give me the credit but I was $10 off. So I put more money down to make up the difference but my credit card said it would be one to two days for the other payment to reflect. So out of options and stranded at the airport, I asked if they would take a virtual card because I booked and HAD ALREADY PAID FOR my car through Affirm. I was told you don't accept Affirm. I responded to her that yes you do because that's what paid for the rental car in the first place. She told me that they would not accept the virtual card to cover the deposit.

I asked to cancel my reservation but I was told I have to contact the business office which I know they're going to charge me $100 for a cancellation fee for a car I'm not even using. I eventually put the $500 down on my debit card which leaves me with very little to spend on my week-long vacation with my family. In the meantime during all of this debacle there were about four or five other customers that came through and every one of them had a problem with their bookings only to be talked down to by your STELLAR CSR REP.

For Gold Plus members you have customer care Representatives who don't give a rat's ass. This was the most disheartening experience. Also your customer service representative made a audible comment saying I was being dramatic when I really was not, I was just frustrated, tired and trying to understand the inconsistencies of previous rentals. I asked to cancel my reservation but I was told I have to contact the business office which I know they're going to charge me $100 for a cancellation fee for a car not even using. I will never do business with your company again and I will continue to leave bad reviews every day based off of this experience. Train your CSR's and focus on customer experience for the love of God. Again, I am leaving a negative review EVERY SINGLE DAY, which doesn't look good for you with an already 3 star rating.

I was referred by Lincoln Pines to the Hertz location at Pines Ford to pick up a rental vehicle while my car was being serviced. I have used this Hertz location several times before. Each time, I paid the security deposit with my debit card and was told the funds would be released within 5–7 days, which is exactly what happened in the past. This time was completely different. After 7 days, I still had not received my money back. I contacted Hertz and was then told it would actually take 10 days. That was the first sign of poor communication, since this had never been the case before. I waited 10 days, still nothing.

After 13 business days, I called again. The representative simply kept repeating what sounded like a scripted response instead of looking into the issue. I asked to speak with a supervisor, who asked whether I had used a credit or debit card. Once I explained that I had used a debit card, I was suddenly told it could take up to 30 days for the deposit to be returned.

I repeatedly explained that this had never been the standard process in my previous rentals and asked why this time was different. Instead of investigating, they just kept repeating the same response over and over like robots. Now I'm left waiting to see whether I actually receive my money back within 30 days or whether I'll have to pursue other options. And one final point: the rental cars at this Hertz location are consistently dirty, have unpleasant odors, the customer service is slow and unprofessional, and the entire experience is frustrating. Overall, this was a terrible experience from start to finish. I expected much better.

Avoid renting from this location! We returned our rental car after hours, on the lot, days before our contract's end date. Despite this, the location didn't process the return for nearly a week — then they claimed without any evidence that the vehicle was damaged while the vehicle was in our possession. There was no damage to the vehicle when it was returned to their lot. When we called to ask about a damage claim, we were verbally told there was no issue and that we'd receive written confirmation we weren't liable. That confirmation never came.

Instead, months later we started receiving bills and collection threats for damage we don't believe we are responsible for, with no clear documentation connecting the damage to our actual rental period. We ended up paying rather than risk our credit, but we do not believe this was handled fairly or honestly. If you rent from this location, take photos of the vehicle prior to and at drop-off and get written confirmation of your return time — don't assume they'll process it promptly or that verbal reassurances mean anything.

Hertz/Uber rideshare. On July 10, 2026, I returned my rental vehicle to Hertz, 5387 Butler National Dr, Orlando, FL, for routine maintenance. A Hertz employee at the counter checked me in, confirmed that my account was in good standing, stated that everything was okay, and authorized me to leave with the vehicle keys. At that time, and I was forced to take the Hertz car to Pep Boys for a check-up on my own time without compensation, Hertz also had already placed an $806 hold on my bank card as payment authorization for the rental.

Two days later, on Monday 7/12/26, I received an email from Hertz threatening to repossess the vehicle due to alleged non-payment. I immediately returned to the Hertz location to resolve the issue. I spoke with the same staff and explained that: 1. I had already paid $406— and had an $806 hold was visible on my bank account. 2. Their own employee had confirmed my payment status and authorized me to continue the rideshare rental just two days prior.

The staff confirmed there was no issue on Friday but could not explain why the same $806 hold suddenly did not count as payment on Monday. I then spoke with Manager **, who demanded an additional $1,200 to continue the Uber Car Share program, effectively requiring $2,000 total for a single rental. When I explained this was unfair and that I could not afford an unexpected $1,200 charge, Manager ** was dismissive and made no effort to accommodate or correct what was clearly Hertz's internal system error.

Manager ** could not provide any explanation for why the $806 hold did not count as payment in Hertz's system. She simply insisted I pay more. This is not a policy dispute; this is Hertz failing to recognize its own authorized payment hold and then demanding additional funds from a customer to cover Hertz's operational mistake. This experience has caused me significant financial distress, disrupted my ability to work through the Uber platform, and reflects extremely poor business practices.

Once she asked for a supervisor, their tone quickly changed and she was apologetic. She tried to prevent us from getting to the supervisor by waiving a fee. Which is ridiculous that they wanted to charge us $100 to change pickup location or just straight up cancel considering the event is over a month out. The Most Dishonest Company and Infuriating Experience. I made a reservation with Hertz on May 2, 2026, for a rental beginning June 16. For more than six weeks, Hertz was perfectly happy to hold my reservation and allow me to plan my trip around it. Then, at 6:30 PM on June 15—less than 24 hours before my arrival—they called to inform me that they would not be honoring the reservation. Not because of any force major but because they overbooked....Let that sink in.

After six weeks of notice and planning, Hertz waited until the evening before my trip to tell me they had no vehicle for me. Not only did they have no vehicle at the local branch, I was told there were no vehicles available statewide. Their solution? Nothing. No replacement vehicle. No meaningful assistance. No accountability. What makes this even worse is that Hertz apparently located vehicles through partner companies but refused to provide them because those vehicles were now being rented at higher rates. In other words, when market prices increased, Hertz simply decided that honoring its commitment was no longer financially attractive. They had a customer with a confirmed reservation and chose to leave that customer stranded rather than absorb the cost of making things right.

That tells you everything you need to know about this company. A reservation with Hertz means absolutely nothing. It is not a commitment. It is not a guarantee. It is merely a placeholder that Hertz may choose to ignore whenever it becomes inconvenient or unprofitable. The customer service experience was just as bad. I was disconnected twice by the corporate call center. Attempts to escalate the issue went nowhere. Speaking with a supervisor was effectively impossible because supervisor callbacks are apparently reserved only for cases that Hertz deems important enough. Evidently, canceling a customer's reservation the night before travel is not considered important.

The entire experience felt like dealing with an organization that has stopped caring about customers altogether. Nobody accepted responsibility. Nobody offered a solution. Nobody appeared remotely concerned about the consequences of leaving travelers stranded at the last minute. What happened here was not an unfortunate mistake. It was a complete failure of customer service, planning, accountability, and basic business ethics. Hertz took a confirmed reservation, allowed us to rely on it, and then abandoned that commitment at the last possible moment. If this is how they treat customers with confirmed reservations, I can only imagine how poorly they handle other problems. This company has earned every bit of this one-star review. I will never rent from Hertz again, and I would strongly encourage anyone considering Hertz to choose any other company instead; it would be hard, if not impossible, to find worse!

I rented from Hertz at Orlando, Florida, airport, June 4, 2026, through June 7, 2026. My rental was supposed to cost $128.00. I received my final bill for $522.00, with being charged $400.00 for cleaning-smoking fee. I do not smoke and have never smoked all of my life. I have been trying to speak with a live agent via chat and telephone, starting at 11:30 am (6/8/2026) and continuing to 3:25 pm (6/8/2026). I'm still trying to speak with a live agent to dispute this $400.00 charge.

If I could give this company zero or negative stars I would! I wish I listened to the reviews and steered clear! DO NOT EVER RENT FROM THEM!!! Absolutely horrible experience! The women at the counter is hateful and spiteful. The Hertz online service was nice trying to refund our money but apparently the airport operates on its own and they don’t have much say. If I knew that I definitely would not have rented from them. We thought we were getting an Expedition for a road trip for our babymoon. And we got an Armada. Apparently even though it’s advertised on the website they’ve never had Expeditions and they think it’s a similar vehicle!

The lady at the counter even got mad at me saying, "I don’t know why you would even think we had an Expedition." I said, "If you go to your website that’s exactly what I booked." she got mad and said, "Well we mean something similar to it." But they are not remotely the same size! My husband is 6’8 and I travel with a service dog. So room for an 11HR drive was very important. We left the airport thinking we would try to use the vehicle. But it was not enough room. My husband looked like he was in a clown car. I couldn’t make him drive that for 11hrs. I contacted Hertz online. They said to call around to see if any other company in the area had a larger vehicle that we could swap it out no charge. If not confirm with rental company they will refund.

I called the airport. They confirmed they would refund our money. She confirmed with management and everything. I spent all morning calling around calling within an hour and half drive with no luck. So we returned the vehicle. Gassed up and clean and was still charged over $200! Hertz online was nice but had no say over what the airport does apparently or so they said anyway. Hertz quit responding to my emails. This horrible experience nearly ruined our trip! Worst experience ever!! Do not ever rent from these people!! Absolutely horrible!!

I made a reservation on April 24, 2026 for May 11 - 13, 2026 at Phoenix, Arizona Airport for a Hybrid Medium Sedan for the total price of $285.56. When I checked in, the lady who checked me in asked why I requested that vehicle. I told her I wanted a car that would be comfortable for a lady who is 93 years old. She told me she could get me another vehicle that would be nice and I asked her how much. She said she would give me her the price she would get. I should have asked how much that was but didn't. I was tired after my flight and had other things on my mind about the trip. I paid with a credit card and after she gave me the receipt and told me where to pick up the car. When I looked at the receipt, I discovered the price was $546.78, almost twice the price of the original cost of $285.56. The vehicle was a Hyundai Tucson which is not worth the difference in the cost vs. the original Hybrid Medium Sedan.

I am 83 years old, retired, and on a fixed income and cannot afford scams like this. Immediately after the rental, I received an email from Hertz asking about my experience and I gave them the same response so obviously they don't care. I have been renting from Hertz since before 2012 but will never rent from this company again.

I preface this poor review by saying I have been a loyal Gold Hertz customer for nearly 40 years, but sadly, their treatment of customers and customer service has gone downhill since their merger with 2 budget rental companies. I have joined the ranks of customers that have been assessed exorbitant damage claims with poor evidence and no customer service available to discuss (Philadelphia airport location Jan 2026). I didn't check the damage waiver box at rental and of course the amount Hertz claimed was below my auto deductible, leaving me on the hook for an unwarranted windshield replacement charge. I encourage all Hertz renters to take the time to video the vehicle before and after the rental so you can dispute damage claims. As for me, Hertz has lost a customer as a result of this incident.

I reserved a car online. It said I was all set. I took an Uber to the location just to hear that they have no cars available. The girl was not helpful at all. She did not offer me another location. She completely ignored me and I had to call another Uber to bring me back home. They should have a way to cancel reservations if they don’t have a car before people go to pick up the car they had reserved.

I made two reservations with Hertz through Priceline. The first reservation I was able to receive but had to wait two hours to pick it up because the staff was not in any rush to get these people out the door and they were having to wash the cars check people in and check returns all at the same time. I made another reservation later that week to pick up the same car and when I showed up, she told me they did not have a car available until 3 o’clock that afternoon even though I had a reservation for 8 that morning. I had a time sensitive doctors appointment that I needed to get to and so I was not able to get the vehicle that late and make my appointment on time so I declined it. A few days later, I saw a charge on my card for that vehicle that I did not pick up and tried to call, jumping through multiple AI agents and not being able to get ONE human on the phone.

It took two days and sitting on hold for over an hour to get the situation rectified and it turns out it was a NO SHOW fee when I clearly showed up and they did not have the vehicle that I reserved. It is completely inconsiderate and unbelievably disrespectful to your customers to allow yourself to be overbooked by 20 reservations! (She explained that to me when I expressed my frustrations) I will never be using Priceline or Hertz ever again. They should be ashamed of themselves.
