I just noticed a monthly charge from Experian for some sort of account I did not know I had. They informed me that when I purchased a credit report for $4.99 some 9 months ago, I was automatically signed up for a monthly membership, which increased to $19.95 going forward. I received no notification of this recurring charge over that time period, so I had no idea it was happening until I reviewed my credit card statements line-by-line in the wake of the Equifax breach. What's more, my account was upgraded to premium in August, increasing the charge to $24.99. I never once accessed this account during this time period, and I certainly did not upgrade to premium. However, the representative informed me the account was being accessed several times per month. As I am not accessing it, clearly there is fraudulent activity, to which Experian was not only completely unsympathetic, but shockingly unconcerned.
I understand there's a chance I was tricked into the original monthly charge, but I would have at least expected them to work with me on the premium upgrade in August (for which I was also double-charged). Instead, I received some dismissed boiler-plate language about terms of service and was told to speak to my financial institution. A horrible experience from start to finish. I would firmly recommend that no one ever buy anything from them. Period.

$4.95 charged and paid for credit score. $19.95 subsequently charged, presumably for a membership. I did not intentionally start a membership. There was no confirmation of membership, membership number, or billing receipt provided by Experian. I cannot contact this company because they do not answer the phone. Why is this company permitted to stay in business?

Getting a credit freeze from Experian is almost impossible. I started at their webpage and read about all the services they would like to sign me up for and all the reasons getting a credit freeze would cause problems in the future. I ended up at their online freeze request page. They made me jump through all kinds of hoops and give them lots of information. This isn't going to be online afterall.

As with others on this site, Experian is apparently scamming people by secretly posting a 24.95 fee on their credit cards for some ridiculous 'protection' service. As an educated finance person who works at a big bank, this is corporate greed at its very best. The marketing person Experian who came up with this scam is betting that folks forget to cancel this service to keep the fee charges coming. How disgusting is that psychology? There is no monthly confirmation of charges and no reminder to cancel... why would a thief tell you that? It's practically robotic. For others who have been scammed, please shout out your complaint. Maybe we can be heard if we collectively scream into Experian's CEO office in the sky.

This bureau is a robbery shop. Last month they increased my membership fee without notifying me so I called in to deactivate my account and requested a refund. The Experian agent refunded me and confirmed with me that I would not receive any future charges from Experian. But WTF they charged me AGAIN this month!! Then I called in again. It turned out the guy I spoke with last month never actually deactivated my account! I had to request a refund again but the lady who answered the call said I could only get a refund every 12 months! Since I was refunded last month I could not get a refund this month! WTF. It was NOT my fault to be charged again. It was the first Experian agent's fault! WHY did he LIE to me about deactivating my account?! Is this how Experian steal from customers?! I had to contact my bank to permanently block this robber Experian from charging my credit card!!

I was charged $1 for an Experian promotional item on February 9th, 2017. It was supposed it be a one-time charge--I certainly was not aware of signing up for a service with recurring billing. I thought it was a one-time charge. I was charged for the second time by Experian for CreditWise, this time for $24.99, on August 18th, 2017.
I got an email from Experian on July 3rd saying new benefits would be provided: "All this and more will be included for the new monthly price of $24.99/mo." I never noticed that email, and I did not receive anything in the mail saying there would be a charge. I had only signed up for a free membership, long before incurring the aforementioned $1 charge. It looks like because they had my credit card on file, they added a new service to my account without my knowledge. I have asked the new $24.99 charge to be refunded and was refused by Experian's customer service. This is a very unethical practice on Experian's part.

The credit rating services are a hoot. Even when you pay on time, pay extra, and never have an outstanding balance from month-to-month, the rating declines, as it did in my case. I have one installment loan and two credit cards. I always pay off my credit card balances every month. Both services use Experian to calculate scores for me and other customers. My rating went down even though I made two extra principal payments on my installment loan and paid off both of my credit cards. Now here's the interesting thing: The reasons given for why my score went down (which are very nebulous, by the way) differ completely on the two cards. By the way, the Experian rating from my bank was substantially lower than the one these credit cards are reporting to me. The credit rating industry is a joke, and it's a crime that consumers are unable to exempt themselves from the system.

I called Experian and canceled a 7-day free trial three days after I signed up. A week after I canceled they withdrew funds from my account. I called and was told that they forgot to process the cancellation and it would be 3 to 5 business days to receive a refund. I spoke to a supervisor who could only apologize and nothing more. Long story short; I called Experian three times for them to cancel my membership. Apparently you need to cancel the monitoring and the membership or else they will keep billing you. Very deceptive practices. Make sure you get a cancellation email or keep calling them until you do.

I have canceled the service repeatedly over the years, only to find they continue to bill me. To be fair I need to review my statements more closely or I could have identified this sooner... but calling to actually cancel is laborious. The hold music alone is nearly enough to make you want to hang up (roughly 10 second loop of bad jazz)... then they cancel, and are unable to give a transaction # for the cancellation... "we'll send you an email" but that email gives no details. I suspect I will have to call again in a month and likely get my credit card involved in the process.

I signed for Experian to keep track of my credit score and to see if I can do anything to improve it ($9.97 per month). Turned out to be a vastly inaccurate and misleading score. First of all, if you want to get your credit score from the three agencies they will charge you extra $39 per report. Secondly, I kept receiving that my score is in very good/exceptional category. However, once I applied to a loan, they did a credit check and turned out that my Experian score was over 100 points off. Called the customer service, they gave me the whole speech that scores can be calculated differently, and algorithms and such. Personally, I do not care, I signed for the service expecting to get a good estimate of my score, after all Experian is one of the scores on the credit report. If I cannot get a good estimate then I do not see the point of having this service.

Even when I try to cancel the charge (I've tried for over a year) they will not stop charging my card. I've changed card numbers, twice, and received a different account number but the charges keep coming. I try to call, each month, and the outcome is never satisfactory... to cancel the monthly charge. My credit card company says Experian needs to stop charges but they have every excuse, including long waits and call disconnects, that keep the charges coming. It's a huge time waster and very upsetting to see the month after month charges and to know I will have to take more time trying to get it taken off.
I've contacted ** and filed a complaint with a government agency. Experian has been deceptive, greedy and dishonest in many regards. They seem to think they are above ethical practices. Please don't end up like me and so many others. Don't buy anything from Experian. You can get a free credit report... working through other sources. Investigate the deception and crimes, even the lawsuits, charged against these credit reporting agencies. They can do anything they want and get away with it. I was under the impression that I was only paying one dollar to see my credit score one time. I was then charged a $22 monthly payment a few days later for creating an account with Experian. They did a good job of hiding that information on all of their web pages. The advertisement stated that I would receive my credit score for one dollar. After being charged the $22, I found a statement at the bottom of the web page in fine print explaining this clause. When I called to ask them about the charge, I was given the runaround. I then requested to speak with a supervisor, and was promptly hung up on. I paid a dollar to get a free credit report on freecreditreport.com. I had no idea that I was going to be signed up for a monthly membership where they would be charging me. After I paid the $1 then I never got an email from freecreditreport.com. Instead I began getting emails from Experian but I thought they were spam because I never went to the Experian site and never signed up for newsletters from Experian. I never used the service, I was never sent an email welcoming me to a monthly charge service, there was no warning that I would be charged at all. I was signed up from January until June being charged $21.95 each month. My husband and I moved across country and missed this charge for whatever reason.
When I called they would only refund me "as a courtesy" one month of $21.95. I waited more than 30 minutes to speak with a supervisor and she argued with me saying that I paid the $1 and should have seen that I was enrolling in a monthly program. Honestly I thought that it was an "option" not something automatic but would never have gone through with the $1 if I had known. I did not want the monthly program, I did not request the monthly program, and I never used the program that they offered.
They said that it's not their problem that I never used the membership... The problem is that I never knew I had a program to use because I never requested, wanted, or signed up for the membership... So I never knew I had a membership to use. The "supervisor" decided to continue to argue with me. It was the worst customer service that I have ever experienced. This business model is highly unethical and the worst customer service I have ever dealt with. This company is basically stealing people's money by signing them up for something they never wanted or asked for.
They only refunded me $21.95 and would not budge on the rest of the money. I tried calling again but they would not budge. The people who take the calls are very well trained and have no real heart. They basically told me that it was all my fault. This company chooses to not be transparent intentionally because if they had just sent me an email saying that I was not going to be billed monthly I would have called to cancel... But that is the way they make all of their money. I guess I've been gotten by a truly rotten company.

It all boils down to one thing, way too much money for a product that is paid for by my creditors. It should be free to see what others are doing to track your every move behind your back. I am honestly surprised that Experian's tactics are legal. Coming from a background of owning a web app & website development company, I was still duped by Experian's sinister registration process of conning their users (victims) into a subscription that they are unaware of -- then telling those 'customers' it was their own fault, and then refusing to offer refunds. I actually think that their entire business model is run on this model, intentionally conning people. I called Wells Fargo Fraud detection and they mentioned that the complaint was so common, they had a customer service number for Experian ON FILE.
Think about that for a moment. I was so disturbed by this, I wrote an article about it. I encourage everyone to take some form of action -- dispute your charges with your bank/card, file a complaint with the BBB, and take to social media against this injustice. Do NOT give them your credit card information as the Experian Consumer Services website is rampant with attempts to quickly and unsuspectingly collect revenue from the consumers they claim to "protect". Unknowingly I signed up for the Experian Consumer Services, Experian Creditworks that costs $21.95 monthly. I identified the $1 charge and the $21.95 charge on my credit card statement (post 7 days) from "enrollment".
I promptly called 1-866-617-1894. After 32 minutes of being on hold and speaking with the first representative and failure to refund the $21.95 I requested to speak with supervisor. The supervisor refused to refund the $21.95 after multiple request and after 52 minutes (approximately 35 of 52 minutes on hold) I ended the phone call. Experian Consumer Service has poor quality customer service as evidenced from their misleading advertising, website, emails, excessive hold times and unwillingness to refund unwanted services. There is nothing on this web page indicating additional costs or a trial period that would be followed by a monthly fee. Because of the page showing step 2 and clear indication that the CreditWorks program was free, there was no reason for me to believe that there was a trial period and consequential monthly charges.
It was only upon receiving a paper copy of my credit card statement that I was made aware of my enrollment. I contacted Experian and had the membership cancelled. After verifying my personal information and explaining my problem to 4 different Experian reps, the last rep disconnected me. I called back and it started to in the same pattern "let me transfer you to dispute specialist".
3 representatives into this call I asked for a manager. Ken, manager of Team Paragon got on the phone. I explained how these inquiries were not authorized and how I had placed my account on "block" to prevent more fraudulent inquiries but needed to have the others removed. He found the letter I provided from the financial institute. But said that he won't delete the negative hard inquiry errors from my report because I used them as a bank. And I repeated that I never applied for loans on those inquires and I had the letter from that confirming I was in error and they would be suppressed. But they were still there and not removed. I also asked him if he was aware of the federal laws (FCRA) protecting people from this type of stuff? He said this situation does not apply.
I repeated that they didn't have my approval to pull a hard inquiry. He stuck it's his answer and I said, "So what I'm hearing you say is that anyone can pull a hard inquiry against my credit without my permission?" He said, "Yes, if it's in their best interest they can." I couldn't believe what I was hearing from management in the Dispute Department of the bureau. I said "in their best interest for what? I wasn't applying for any financing through them. And this inquiry is damaging my score." He stuck to his guns and I asked for his employee number. Even after providing proof that the report was incorrect, I was told it would stay the same.

Experian has been charging my credit card $20/month (Plus $40 initially) without my knowledge since August of 2016. This company advertises a $1 credit report and then proceeds to continue to charge people for a membership that they did not actually sign up for. I was able to retrieve about 25% of what they took from me, but this company is basically a scam.

I, like so many others who seem to have been duped by this company, gave my dollar for my credit report. Unbeknownst to me, my credit card was being charged 23.99 each month. This happened for 6 months. Now, I'll take culpability for not checking my statement but this "reputable " company, does nothing to help the consumer. I called and spoke with a customer service representative and repeatedly asked to speak with a supervisor. After 30 minutes waiting for said supervisor, I was finally able to get through to Javora. Javora stated their company has no fault and I am basically still being charged for May. What a corrupt system! DO NOT USE EXPERIAN.

I recently posted a review about Experian. Since then, they have reached out to me and apologized for any bad experience that I had and offered to refund me for the charges on my credit card. I would like to cancel my first review on here, but since I do not know how I will post this second one in hopes that it will neutralize the bad comments I had before. Their excellent customer service the second time around changes my mind about this company and I very much appreciate the respect that they showed me.

Just like previous reviews, I feel tricked by using the Experian website. My goal was to see my credit score one time and in order to do that I paid the $1 to sign up for the free trial. No word ever from them again that they were charging my card $21.95. Also, I was charged $39.95 after apparently clicking that I wanted to see my FICO score. Throughout this whole process I was not notified in advance of my card being charged and only realized it when I went to pay my credit card bill. I called customer service to cancel the membership and asked for a refund. The woman refused and showed very little initiative to help the situation, giving me the feeling that this is a rather common occurrence.
I will NEVER use Experian again and as a word of advice, if you do, read every single word of the fine print because who knows what they will charge your card for without asking permission. I feel shocked that this company is as successful as it is when it does these types of arrangements. To me, it is very deceptive and I hope in the future they learn to be much more upfront and clear with what they are charging you with. I'm baffled that I didn't receive any mail or emails warning me in advance that these charges were going to occur... I'm just glad I keep up to date with credit card transactions or it could've been a LOT worse. What's so good about this site to charge $21.95 and then $39.95 anyway??? Waste of time and money.

Similar experience to other consumers. Experian does not tell you they are signing you up for a 7 day free trial when they give you a free credit report. They then bill your CC for a $21.95 monthly fee 7 days later. I saw this 3 days after the charge posted. I talked to a Experian rep and then was on hold for 25 minutes to talk to a manager and both refused to refund my money. I just said I didn't want the service and I had no intention of signing up for it.
It was weird the whole time. They asked me questions like "Do you remember giving us a CC? Do you remember authorizing us to charge your card a $1." It was like they didn't know what their own signup process was. It felt like they were trying to find the best way to trick you into signing up for their service. It is from a credit agency too... The whole conversation just didn't feel very good when it's coming from someone who is trying to help prevent fraud. I ended up just sucking it up and saying cancel me, and eating the $21.95. Just want other people to be aware though and watch out for this.

Experian is a den of thieves! I am a disabled senior and have to make my (measly) disability check go as far as possible. I made the mistake of thinking Experian was a reputable company. I went on their site to get my FREE annual credit report, they asked if I wanted to see the other two credit bureaus' reports, which are also FREE. My credit card came in with a $39.95 fee! That's one week of groceries... No way would I have agreed to pay that for FREE credit reports. They then charged another $21.95 for nothing!!! When I called to complain, all they were willing to do was cancel my subscription so I would not be charged recurring fees in the future. I'd be happy to be part of a class-action lawsuit against this unethical company if the rest of you who've been ripped off are interested. Too bad we can't give a 0 star rating.

The person I spoke to said it might be as insignificant as them (creditor) using CT or COURT. Bottom line Experian can't/won't tell you who/what the change was. I was unaware of this automatic sign up service. The first correspondence from Experian to me was after the 7 day trial period and after they billed my credit card for $21.95. I called Experian and cancelled the service and asked for a refund. The first person claimed that they could not refund my money. Also they refuse to let Rent Reporters report your good long standing rental history that shows you pay/paid your rent on time and boosts your credit age. They only allow rental history to be added if your landlord pays one their approved partners to do so and it's not a retroactive look back at your payment history. This company is a total rip-off. Without my clear consent, they collected payments for 3 months out of my bank account, furthermore without receipt of the transaction or email to communicate the cost and terms of the product they claim I purchased by agreeing to the terms of a different transaction. They first refused to refund any of the monthly payments. But when I told them that I contacted a lawyer to see if there is a case for class action, they refunded everything by the same day. I was never alerted to the fact that I was actually making a membership purchase, nor that I was purchasing anything other than the FICO score for the $4.97. I called the customer service and they only offered to refund one of the three charges and I demanded that my membership be canceled. I think that the consumer protection agencies in this country should penalize these companies and especially when it is something so delicate as my credit score, they should not be trying to make money off of this.
There should be much more regulation of these kinds of sneaky and misleading practices. I would not trust Experian with my credit score or my money. Who knows who else is paying them to manipulate all of our scores one way or the other as they see fit for profit. I hope the government starts to see that consumers need to come first and these companies should not be reaping a profit. In fact, this is not a for-profit service they should be doing, the government should take this on so that there are no hidden interests involved. Today I noticed that I have been charged a $21.95 fee for three months for your FREE CREDIT REPORT services. I contacted your company and spoke to two individuals. The last lady I spoke to was a supervisor by the name of Claudia. She was extremely rude and unprofessional. I was told that I had signed up for a seven-day trial only and that it is clearly marked that after the seven-day trial I would be billed monthly for your services. Services for what? Who wants a credit report every month?
I got back on your website to look at the process of your FREE CREDIT REPORT and on a cell phone your warnings are not noticeable. I have searched my email and every email from your company was in the junk mail which is automatically kicked over from my internet provider labeling it as junk and therefore removed as spam. After further digging on the internet I have noticed that this seems a huge issues with a lot of consumers who believe they are getting nothing more than a FREE CREDIT REPORT.
I have contacted my credit card company to dispute these charges and I am requesting that you refund my credit card back 100% of these charges. Your company should be ashamed of yourselves especially advertising free credit reports to trusting people. I am unsure why there has not been a class action suit filed against your company yet. Upon my boss's return, I will give him all the facts and pages upon pages of complaints against your company for the same issue and then move forward legally if I have to. I expect to hear a response from your company by the close of business on January 2, 2017.

DO NOT and I repeat DO NOT make an Experian account. You will be overcharged without any notice and none of it will be refunded to you. They attract customers by advertising free credit reports but then they make you sign a deal with the devil. Among the many requirements that they will require you agree upon, a monthly fee will be camouflaged and hidden in it for "benefits" that are of no use. Basically, they are modern day thieves and run on defying people to steal their money using false advertising.

I requested a credit report in April, 2016 for which the website said I would be charged $1. I was very careful not to check any boxes that would subscribe to their services or subject myself to any repeating charges. Nonetheless, several days after the $1 charge, I was charged $23.57 by Experian. I did not notice this charge, and Experian continued to charge me monthly, raising the charge to $26.83 a few months later. I finally noticed the charge in December, at which time I had paid $229.43 in illegally charged items. I called the company to complain. They refused to do anything other than cancel the so-called "membership" that I had never authorized. I see others here have had similar experiences. This company is committing out-and-out fraud. I was reviewing my credit card account as I always do on a regular basis and notice a charge of $49.98 from Experian. I called the toll-free number provided in the description of the charge. I explained that I had not authorized such a charge, and want it to credit back to my credit card. I was then asked if I requested a free credit report for a $1, to which I replied "NO." Then I was told it was a request I made to get a copy of my credit report for $4.99 and I had 30 days to cancel or I would be charged the monthly fee. After saying over and over again "I did not request a copy of my credit report" and getting nowhere I asked to speak to a supervisor. Manny # ** got on the phone and said, "Let me look into this for you." She then explains, "We charged you for two months for a membership you had. We were trying to debit your card for the last two months."
I again repeated, "I did not request a membership, nor any credit reports and I wanted this canceled and refunded back to my credit card." She said all she can do is "credit you back half as a courtesy and cancel your membership." I was frustrated at this point and told her to credit back the half and make sure this is canceled and I'll do what I need to do to get the rest back. I deserved the full charge credited back to my card and it was not given. I do not understand how such a large business can get away with treating people like this and being able to charge for no services rendered. I'm sure there will be a class action lawsuit coming soon.

So, for a dollar billed to your credit card--when the deceptive ad says you don't need a credit card!--you get to look at your Experian score. The small print says you get this credit tracker privilege for free for seven days, after which your credit card will be charged $21.95 every month for a bunch of services with limited value to an average consumer. The information on how to cancel your membership is quite well camouflaged, requiring sharp eyes and a bit of determination. And then the fun begins...
I sent an email using the email address provided on the website, included my name and, membership number, with clear instructions to cancel my membership. All within five days of joining this nefarious scheme. And then I checked my credit card account to find $21.95 had been charged by Experian. I called the number provided--in tiny type--and explained what I'd done and that I wanted my money refunded. The representative claimed he could not refund the charge because no one at Experian was aware. I'd tried to cancel. He then opined that the email address was wrong; the website I'd visited was an old one; the website was for another Experian service rather than the one I'd signed up for... you see the pattern here.
I demanded to speak to a supervisor. She was not helpful. However, she finally provided the email address for the billing department, with the statement that they "might" be able to help after "investigating the matter." So I forwarded my original cancellation email, demanding a refund and pointing out that even a giant corporation should not want adverse publicity from irate consumers. We'll see how it goes.

I get a poor rating for 3 reasons: 1. I have one credit card max 300 but my balance rolls 100 to 220 a month and paid monthly. Reportedly to high a percent. Never say small credit card setting by my choice. 2. As Experian gives negative scores and sells them I am flooded with bankruptcy companies and credit problem solving. When they call and hear my minimum balance and fact I've never been bankrupt. They say... I don't have a problem. 3. This false tilted reporting stereotypes me which I can not get out from under. As a result I pay a high rate on interest on my car loan... double of anyone else. This does increase the profits of the banks as I am blacklisted for no reason. 18 yrs ago I paid off my mortgage 12 years early. I have no other debt. I am blackmailed into paying high rates for no reason.
I had signed up and paid full price for my credit report. Not knowing they would charge me forevermore. My bank has only been able to recoup $39.00 of 196.00 taken falsely. My suggestion use the local mob office or pawnshop. At least you can settle disputes there or call the police. As Experian is a business one can not call the police on them to get your money back.

I have a recent ding on my credit rating from a medical bill from Medical City Dallas that was a totally unreasonable bill ($694) for the service provided (8 exercises) that I refused to pay in total, but agreed to pay half. Medical City did not reply to my written complaint logged and sent the unpaid bill directly to Experian credit agency. I went online to get my free credit report from Experian to verify the reason my credit rating had been lowered and did not read the small print, in that I had to decline in 7 days an annual agreement to continue this service.
When it hit my credit card I called and they stopped the service, tried to sell me other less expensive products and refused to refund the initial month prorated charge. Based on what I see they do this to a lot of folks. I have had two medical bills in the last 15 years that are the only bills I have not paid timely --- the other was for $150. Both of these bills have/will have a 7 year effect on my credit rating. There is no review of whether the amount being sent to the credit agency is correct and no thought given to the materiality of the charge versus the credit worthiness of the individual. I think it is time for companies like Experian to actually provide a service for the income they are achieving. I hope others will continue to reflect their negative experiences with credit agencies, so eventually the system will be improved.

To my surprise, I had a $25 charge to my bank account today from Experian for my wonderful "credit tracking" (such a joke. Whom actually pays for this service when there's free sites such as Credit Karma to monitor your own score?).
I called their 1-800 number and spoke to Lord knows who (hate to sound racist, but does anyone who has a telemarketing job speak English?) and he/she of course tried forcing to continue my account with them at a 50% discount, which of course, I declined. I then was told the fee was not refundable. I asked to speak to a manager. I was placed on hold for almost 30 minutes. The "manager" who I had the misfortune of speaking with was rude and short with me. She refused to listen to anything I had to say and her response to everything was "we don't refund ma'am; we don't refund ma'am". At the end of the day, this is clearly the ONLY way they make money. Why is it that Experian is infamous for being the lowest credit bureau out of the other two? We need to make this an issue. We have to use every single social media outlet to blow this up. I am writing and visiting our local and DC congressmen to get the ball rolling. It's unfair that I have worked very hard to get my credit really good. But Experian is the lowest by a lot. They do not update my payment history at all. They are out to keep all of us hard working people down. They strike deals with Lenders to go with Experian so they get an incentive to mark us low. In return the lenders are able to "better negotiate" a higher interest rate with is potential clients and what do we say from there? It's legalized corruption.
I work so hard to stay on top of all that I do. And it's not fair that I am being penalized for a company's greedy behavior and politics. Just so they can profit. We have to stand up and fight this credit issues. There should be only one score and that's it. Experian continues to affect my progression in my life in regards to obtaining a good loan. I just realized that my subscription to Experian is subsidizing a company that, in effect, is the ONLY reason my credit rating has declined in the past year. Their "robot" is incapable of considering any factors outside the boundaries of their super rigid formula that tosses people like me with a very longstanding excellent credit history with folks who are reckless with credit. Here are the problems that seem to have had with me: INQUIRIES. I just bought a house and, as a wise consumer, I shopped for a mortgage. I considered six lenders. Every time one of them checked my credit, Experian lowered my credit rating by six points. So, I list 24 total points just by applying for mortgages. Their very broad description of "too many inquiries" actually discourages the very sound practice of seeking the best possible mortgage package.
At one point, one credit bureau showed a FICO score of 814 for me. Experian moved me down to 780 while I looked for a mortgage. So, instead of a 3.44 interest rate, which my eventual lender offered, I ended up paying 3.66 per cent, solely on the basis of Experian's report. They moved me from an excellent rating to very good and it's costing me money for 30 years!
RETAIL ACCOUNTS - According to Experian, I have too many. Here's what really happened. I asked my bank to change the type of VISA card they issued to me. The old one was carrying one of those interest free balance transfer balances for 18 months. So, I didn't close it. I left money in my investment account, which earned 12% last year. Simple math. I made money by doing this. I had the funds to pay it off but decided to continue to earn very attractive dividends by leaving it where they were. But the "robot" read this differently. Another credit card! An unpaid balance! Ding this guy! Then US Air merged with American Airlines. My previous card was converted to an American Express Advantage Master Card. Oh boy! Another inquiry! Ding this guy!
Then I moved a long distance to my new house. The mover would take a certified check or money order or charge to move to a credit card. Since we didn't know the final charges at pickup time, I used a credit card. Oh boy! He just used a greater percentage of his available credit! Ding this guy! During this process, I was awaiting two major financial settlements, both of which were in my favor. My plan was to pay off all of my credit card balances when the funds were received. Well, I received both in the past 10 days. So, I want to pay off what I owe (which is only 6% of my total available credit) and close a few accounts. But if I do, Experian will be waiting to ding me again for closing accounts and reducing available credit. Bear in mind. No late payments for more than 20 years! Practically no debt! Yet I continue to pay Experian a monthly fee to feed their robot, which in my view, is my only credit problem at the moment.
I have given up trying to talk to a human being there. Their dead-end phone system always manages to put my call through, referring me to their useless website. I am contacting my congressman this week. It's time that Experian be held accountable for the damage they are doing to responsible consumer such as myself. Ironically, I spend a portion of my career conducting financial literacy programs for 3 million school children. If they do what we taught them, they will be responsible consumers and victims of organizations such as Experian. This robot needs a brain and a set of ears!

I applied for a loan in June 2016. As I have not checked my credit score in a while, I was curious to see what it would be. Without a question of trust, I used the Experian site. We are not supposed to be concerned that the 3 Credit Bureau have all of our personal information. They are supposed to be vaults for our complete financial data.
Experian advertised in big letter "One Time Report for $39.95!" I used a debit card by one of my banks to sign up for the "one time report." Next thing I know, I am receiving charges for $39.95 every month since. I called Experian who defensively replied that it was no mistake on their part and I "HAD to have signed up for a subscription." I am a senior on social security, so why on earth would I need to view my credit report every month, especially since Experian can see that I hadn't looked at it in years.
So, Experian reversed the charges and assured me that the subscription that I "had to have signed up for" would be closed. Then in August 2016 (one month after!!) I start getting recurring charges for the exact same $39.95 from "Scoresense," another credit report company, but on a completely different bank checking account. Now is it not ironic following that same month that I supposedly closed my account with Experian, I start getting charges from Scoresense. That's not the end of it. I also happen to get a letter from Comenity Bank that they received my application for a Wayfair Credit Card, but cannot proceed until I call them to verify some information. Saturday, I signed up for Experian's $1 credit-report-and-subscription (cancellable within 7 days), on behalf of my wife. I downloaded the information, which was useful to us, and wanted to close the subscription. It was not at all obvious how to do that from their website, though they had a 'Contact Us' link that I could not use then. Afterwards, I read the reviews on this site, and was pretty worried (though I didn't have a lot of sympathy with the reviewers who claimed ignorance about the $1 actually starting a subscription), but I decided to continue diligently.
I called Experian two days later, on Monday. After a 20 minute wait, I talked with "Brad." He said that he could not help me, because the account was to get credit information on my wife and I was not her, even though I told him I had Power of Attorney on her behalf. He asked if I had any other questions. I asked something like, "Why are you illegally refusing to honor my Power of Attorney?" He politely replied that it was company policy.
I insisted on speaking to his supervisor (Thanks, ConsumerAffairs, for the review that clued me into the efficacy of this approach!). After about a 5 minute wait, I talked with "Morgan." She was MUCH more helpful. She had me give her detailed information about the credit card I used for the $1 charge, and my name, and said my subscription was terminated. And I immediately got an e-mail confirmation of the cancellation (to my wife's e-mail account).
That was a pretty good result for me. I have been on the phone for two hours with other companies before getting results. The only complaint I have is that if I had not known to insist to talk with Brad's supervisor, I would have had to resort to Plan B: reporting my card as stolen (Fortunately, that would have been easy. The card was from USAA, and they have my Power of Attorney on file under her account.). Lessons: 1. Read the fine print (especially when you are giving out your credit card information). 2. Cancel within the 7 days. 3. If you can't get cooperation, talk to a supervisor.

Experian will never get my business again and I will be sure to share this news with anybody who is considering using your service. Have a horrible day and I hope you enjoy that money.

Like everyone else here, I fell for the "free report" lie that Experian turns into a monthly fee for providing absolutely no further service of any value whatsoever. Unfortunately I didn't catch it for a couple months, and then when I did I immediate contacted them through their site which resulted in an email exchange where their representative asked for more information and then failed to respond when I sent it to them. Finally after multiple tries the email address started bouncing and I found a phone number to call. After being on hold for quite some time someone finally took my information and closed my account. Unfortunately, they managed to hit my account 4 times with the 21.95 charge before that point.
I've dealt with services that try to pull this kind of scam before, but this one was especially devious in concealing that it was a service at all by misrepresenting it as a "free report" when in fact this is more like trial. Obviously the reason they lied about this upfront is because no one in their right mind would sign up for a "trial" when all they want is a one time report. I never was informed that there was an ongoing service involved and the first time I saw the "price" for this "service" was when the charge had already hit my account more than once. This is extremely shady and definitely borders on being criminal activity.

Don't use this service. They charge you more than what is stated. I was charged $40 the first week and then charged another 21.95 the very next week. They do not make it clear on the website about charges more than a dollar and it is not clear that you are signing up for a service. When you call to get your money refunded it doesn't seem anyone can refund any money.

Without us they wouldn't even have a business. What a sad, pathetic company. Well we do need your score. I have just endured the worst 2 hours of my life. I have tried every contact info I can find to try to correct an error in your database regarding my birthdate. Macy's Dept Store denied me a credit card because they "cannot verify my birthdate" and they cite you as the reporting agency. Someone obviously made a data entry mistake. I would like to fix that. After multiple phone calls (to both the office in CA and several 800#s) and attempts to use many online features, I cannot get resolution. A nice fellow (David) at the 714 area code tried and was very nice while I was freaking out and yelling at him, but all he could do was transfer me (yet again) to another desk who never answered. The receptionist did this twice. I began to believe that this is how you deal with irate customers. Shame on you.
This is Experian's mistake, not mine, and your employees are either poorly trained or understaffed that customers must listen to that insipid music for 15-20 minutes – at a time. I should not have to attempt my call later, when I'll experience the same frustrating outcome. I fully plan to write a letter to the Better Business Bureau and my local newspaper, Twitter account, and Facebook to let everyone know that the all powerful Experian is worse than any of the politicians we have running for office. How in the world did we allow credit reporting agencies to tie up our lives because of a stupid entry error. Mine is just a dept store credit card, but it's the principle of the consumer being held hostage to a system that cares not whether its information is correct. Bah

I recently registered with Experian and created an account to check my credit report. I wanted to see if my credit had been compromised so I purchased what I thought was $1.00 opportunity to see additional information on my account. Today I was charged $21.95 for "CreditWorks," a service that I did not intend to purchase. As soon as I saw the charge I contacted Experian and complained about the charge and to cancel any future charges. Although they cancelled the subscription they refused to refund the $21.95 because the charge was in their words "valid."
I was given an email address to submit a request to the billing department for a refund which was answered with a quick denial. After my initial purchase of $1.00, I was never sent an email confirming my enrollment in any ongoing credit reporting with a monthly charge of $21.95. Also, I had to do a Google search in order to find a contact number to cancel the subscription as this information is no way illuminated on the Experian website. Experian plasters the word "free" all over its website yet it plays hide the ball when it comes to the specifics of this paid program.
The entire experience felt like a scam and an extreme case of "bait and switch." Although there are other companies offering free credit reports, I choose to use Experian because of the perceived trust that their name carries in the marketplace. Instead of being honest brokers they use their brand to take advantage of people who are using their product to resolve credit issues, not create new ones. Then, when they are confronted about their actions, they then hide behind technicalities in order to profit from as many unsuspecting customers as they can.

I never received a bill from them in my email, physical mail, or any sort of notice. I had no idea they had "upgraded" my account in just 7 days to start charging me for a service I never used. I have found Experian 'carrot' for a $1 credit report to be very misleading. If you get the standard 3 reports it will cost $39.95. The grayed out small print on the initial order page also helps hide the fact that you will start seeing a $21.95 bill every month for nothing. To make it worse, no email notice is given to indicate the billing is to begin. You'll probably catch this after a couple of months but don't expect Experian to cancel and refund the unwanted billing. They'll give you one month refund for catching the ploy, the rest is on you for being a sucker at taking the $1 deal.

The standard complaint here -- their "free" credit report allegedly requires a $1 "token" payment to process, which they then use to bill you $21.95 predicated on the lie that "You didn't opt out of 'joining' in time." This is the very definition of fraudulent business practices, a scam. Their "report" was borderline worthless, and only calling and demanding a supervisor and then demanding they refund my money got any results. Allegedly. I haven't seen the refund in my accounts yet, but I am watching for it. AVOID EXPERIAN.

I called less than 48 hours into the "billing period" but there is no prorated option etc. they just take your money. Another business model built on predatory practices and hoping that consumers don't regularly check their bank statements. AMAZING that the major credit agencies are allowed to operate this way. Why would I pay a borderline fraudulent entity to monitor my credit for fraud?

Were it possible, I'd give them negative stars. I'd give them black holes for their treatment. Not only are they dishonest, they have a business model built on tricking people into their service. You're entitled to a free credit check over 6 months, but they charge you $1 to get it. They just never mention that doing so enrolls you in an 8 day free trial of some service that if you don't cancel, will now result in you being charged monthly. The only reason I came to them was their advertising that they don't charge you for that credit check. Not only, but I examined the documentation. There was nowhere that it said anything about a trial that you needed to cancel. It is a dishonest business model that relies on people not immediately noticing the money they're stealing out of their bank accounts monthly.
When you call them to dispute it, their defense is basically that you didn't read the fine print and that they're well within their rights to keep their ill-gotten gains. This is precisely the sort of thing the CFPB was created for and it wouldn't surprise me if this is the sort of country that lobbied congress critters and fought against having to have clearer disclosure on their practices.

One main point I would like to add is this: when you go to their website even now, the entire screen lights up with brightly colored blue and gold colors and offers all over the place saying to get your score and your report... and then in teeny tiny print hidden in the corner it says that you have to opt out if you don't want the recurring charge? This is a terrible way for a national company to operate. I called customer service - no help.
One point I made is that I never logged back in; never used them again to get my score or check my report. So they know for a fact that I never used them and yet they won't refund. I recently signed up for e-statements from my insurance company which would save them money. Even to do this, I had to reply to an email from them confirming that 'yes' I definitely wanted to do this. And here you have a company that sneaks in a charge and they hide it within your stated desire to get your FICO score. Very deceptive and very distasteful.

I subscribed to Experian for their monthly report and score several years ago. Signed up for basic service (Experian report and score only) which gave me the option to get all 3 reports for extra charge each month. Two weeks ago I received an e-mail from Experian telling me they had improved the service by giving me all 3 reports once each quarter for $10.00 more per month. I did not want this service, but could find no way to opt out. Called customer service and went through 3 or 4 different reps. Best they could do was offer temporary rate but would still include new service. Unable to tell me what I would pay after temporary rate expired. I hung up very angry. Expressed my dissatisfaction on Experian survey about customer service. Finally got call from Stacey at Experian. She assured me that I could opt out, so I did.
Received monthly report from Experian a few days later. My score had dropped 22 points. Been running 832 for all the time I have been a member. Called to question this drop. Everything on my report was the same as always. No one could come up with plausible explanation. No one seemed to care. Accused them of pure vindictiveness. They denied this. I have given them until 8 August to explain, or I will cancel my membership. They don't care.
The lack of accountability in this industry NEEDS TO BE ADDRESSED! I e-mailed Elizabeth Warren about the huge effect these scores have on individual lives (all aspects). I suggested that at a minimum these companies should notify me 30 days prior to entering any negative info in my report and give me 30 days to respond. THESE GUYS NEED SOME STRICT OVERSIGHT. I'm an old guy and don't owe anybody much money. I have a credit card which I pay off each month. Only other debt is mortgage, which will be paid off next year. They tell me this is hurting my score, and (Heaven forbid) if I finally get to the point where everything is paid off my score will be worse than if I wasn't paying any bills. THIS IS NOT RIGHT! It's certainly not the way I was brought up.

I was charged the $21.95 twice on the same day. When I called Experian they said one charge will drop off because it is just an authorization charge. I have no idea what this means but this was their explanation. I informed them that I did not want their service and to not charge my credit card again. I had to ask for an authorization number to confirm any subscriptions were cancelled. They do not offer this number unless you ask for it. Transunion does the same thing so be careful. Right now I am out $60.00 to these companies.
I've notified my bank about these charges however they cannot remove them. I can submit a dispute after the charges clear. Right now they're showing up as pending. At no time did I receive any type of email or correspondence from either company stating I had subscribed to their services. I was able to cancel both subscriptions with Transunion and Experian after I called them. I think this is a scam and should be investigated since it is happening to a lot of people. Now most people have said that the credit agency's give out one free credit report a year. We just happen to find the website listing credit report for 1 dollar and thought we could do this, not a problem. Well it turned out to be a problem and a very big problem when I looked at my bank statement and saw the 21.95 deducted from my bank account.
I called the number and talked to the representative and complained about the website not making it noticeable of the agreement. The most important information is hidden to the eye and full of deceit to the innocent consumer who like you and me are trying very hard to get by in this world. Anyway I called the number and asked where on earth is this place. Well it turns out to be in the Philippines somewhere. I am a recent bankruptcy consumer and I am desperately trying (as much as possible) to clear up any information I can on my credit report (the Bankruptcy Flag is already enough). Then my attorney suggested that I begin to rebuild my credit by securing two credit cards. Well I tried and was told by the vendor (credit card company) that they could not get any information on me from Experian (SO I SAW BLOOD!!!). Experian get your act together or find another business to defraud the people.

They are doing the same to me, charging me, when it was cancelled months later, without my permission. Then they send you these alerts that your credit card is up or down, and when you land on the page to "see" the difference you have to click that you sign up again. I don't go forward, don't sign it, and they still bill me. Someone bust them. This is against all credit card services terms of service. Class action suit anyone?

I, like many others that signed up for Experian's "Free Credit Report" was duped. If a company asks for your credit card number '"just so they can charge you $1," they, undoubtedly, are lying. Lesson learned! After Experian gets your credit card number, they charge $21+ per month until you call and cancel. When you tell them you want the charges put back on your account, they will tell you they can't. Calmly tell them you understand, and ask to speak with their superior. Keep insisting that your card be debited the money. After you speak with enough superiors, you'll find that magically, they can, in fact, give you your money back.

I was very dissatisfied with Experian. I signed up for their free credit check of $1 and was charged for a monthly subscription. When I called to ask for it to be cancelled they would not refund me for the service I never used or wanted. My fiancee did the same $1 credit check and was not charged for a monthly subscription. If that does not leave a bad enough feeling in your mouth, Jasper the supervisor who I spoke to was rude and condescending. Beyond that they could not locate my account using the credit card that I was charged on. They then asked for my social and they still could not find my information. They continued to ask for information and even confirmed I used them for my credit check. I had to unfortunately say yes, however I never wish I had.
They finally asked me to look through my emails to locate emails sent back in May so I could give them the information they should have had on file. This instantly made me question their security and credibility. At that point every other company I could imagine would apologize and refund me. No they did absolutely nothing for me. I am now regretting ever using them and I feel concern that my personal information is in their system. Please NEVER use this company. Their security and your safety could be at risk and they are not organized. I am sorry I ever gave them my information or used them. I will never use them again in the future.

The Experian.com website is intentionally deceitful in hiding the fact that their $1 one-time charge will automatically bill you $21+ per month, and their Customer Support will lie to you that they "can't" reverse the charge, until you ask for a supervisor. Only after politely talking to the supervisor, and telling him that you will charge back the transaction with your credit card company, then suddenly it's possible for them to refund the full amount.

I have had the Experian membership for about 2 years. Then finally, when both of my banks started offering free credit score report services, I decided to cancel it. I called the customer service in January (2016) and cancelled the account. To my great surprise, I found out I was still being charged membership fees in June! I called again and cancelled the membership again, and even got a confirmation email. But guess what- THEY ARE STILL TRYING TO CHARGE ME! I am now disputing the charge with my bank because this is nothing more than a FRAUD. DO NOT sign up for their membership, you will NOT be able to cancel it even if you want to!!

I signed up for my free credit report on May 23, 2016, and since the report does not include your score, I hesitantly signed up for my score for a dollar. As soon as I got my report and score I sent them an email to cancel my membership so I wouldn't be charged. I never received my confirmation that it was cancelled so the same day I called them to cancel my membership. I was told on the phone that my membership was cancelled. On May 31, they charged me the 21 and change for my membership. I called them June 1, 2016 to have them refund my membership and told them that I cancelled on May 23. I was told they have no record of me cancelling and the membership is not refundable.
Since I was not expecting the charge, it overdrew my account and I was charged a $36 bounce fee. My card provider told me that if they refund the charge that it would waive my bounce fee. But since Experian (or the supervisor I spoke with named Skylar badge number **) refuses to refund the fraudulent charge they charged me after I cancelled, now I am having to pay $47 and change for a membership that I cancelled.
Do not use Experian to check your credit unless you plan on paying for the membership. If you cancel, they will either say they never received the cancellation or basically call you a liar because they made a mistake. Apparently they need the money to continue their scam and keep ripping off people with no recourse since they are one of the credit monitoring companies, which with what they do, it seems like they want to damage people's credit. Pretty messed up from a company that claims to monitor credit, and they purposely hinder or damage people's credit. If I could give them negative stars for this review I would.

If I could give a negative score, I would! You would think that a company that plays a HUGE part in our "Credit System/GAME" would not try and scam a single consumer. I never thought that I would have to check reviews left by other consumers on this type of company. Personally, I do not believe in using credit. Taking someone's money and then paying them extra money for giving you the money hurts us individually and as a society. I was taught that if you do not have the money to purchase an item, you go without. You save your money until you are able to pay for it. Not to give in to instant gratification. I was helping my 19 year old son understand this concept and went to show him "the credit game." I selected to pay the $1 for a trial.
The next day I noticed that Experian had charged my checking account $39.95. Wait, what about the $1 trial? NOPE THEY GET THEIR MONEY BY BEING DISHONEST and this is allowed. Don't try and get a refund. You will never succeed. After wasting 2 days and not being refunded, I am just chalking this up to a life lesson. I cancelled the "trial." Just imagine all of the reviewers below unknowingly giving this company their money. Add it up and you have just feed a very greedy company. Shame on Experian!

If my local bank teller threw feces in my face every time I walked in the door to make a deposit, then I would still give that bank a higher rating than Experian. Why? Because that act would be obvious hatred for me and I could love the teller anyway. Meanwhile, Experian lied to my face, then robbed me behind my back, didn't feel sorry about it, and doesn't want to make it right. I am not a novice. I am a GM with skills in financial management, accounting, and business law in a high-tech field. When I was offered a free credit report and score once per year, that sounded like a good deal. I never gave them my email. They started taking $25/month direct debit from our bank account and we did not catch it.
They claim the details were in a welcome email, even though they admit they never had my email and that I never gave them my email or signed up for a membership. Apparently, it was a 7-day trial that I had to cancel, which I could not cancel, since I did not have a online account to log in nor did I give them an email or phone number to notify my of the details. They then upgraded my "membership" to premium, not because I asked them to do so, but because I did not stop them from doing so, even though I had no clue my membership existed and they had no way to notify me. The CS rep argued back to me that I was the one who ordered them to monitor my credit and send me monthly emails about my score. That was after the rep admitted that they don't even have my email or phone number and that I have no online login account.
I've never felt the need to blast a company online publicly. This may be the only negative review that I ever write about a bank or lender. But, in the past 30 years of business and banking and contract negotiation, I have never felt more abused by anyone in the financial industry. Please do not accept any credit services from Experian.

This has to be illegal in some way, considering that there is a law mandating that every consumer is able to get their credit report for free. I guess this law doesn't specify how difficult it needs to be. Calling to get your credit report is just as hard. Ridiculous wait times and chances are you'll have to pay a fee because you've already tried to get your credit report online (they count that as receiving your credit report).
AnnualCreditReport.com shows that they are unable to process my request. However, there's no contact information. Experian also has no customer support line: just a sales line where you can place orders. I don't want to buy your crappy service where you basically own all of my information. I called my bank to contest the charge and the bank's automated system (which is apparently very familiar with contested Experian charges) actually stated that the bank could do nothing about that charge and that I would have to call the vendor directly. I did some research on this site and others, and realized that I had unknowingly become an Experian "member" who was incurring the associated monthly charge. When I called Experian, a young woman explained this exact thing and confirmed that 10 charges of $21.95 had been made to my account. It was actually sickening to hear that and naturally I was upset at myself since I missed noticing the charges for so long.
When I spoke with the woman's supervisor, he explained that they would remove one month's charge and cancel my account. He provided an email to follow up with billing for the rest. So that free credit report only cost me $200 in the end as opposed to the $1 advertised. I lectured both of the representatives that I spoke to that their employer is hurting a lot of people and encouraged them to look for another job. I briefly worked in Argentina fielding calls from Americans trying to buy Dell computers.
When the orders flooded the call center around the holidays, agents would be given an estimated delivery date in the middle of January but would promise callers that their computer would arrive by Christmas. It was all to meet quotas and keep their jobs, of course, and was condoned if not encouraged by management. It is unfortunate that young people with few employment options are stuck doing the bidding of these corporations.
