I recently received an employment offer that required a background check. The third party company, Paycom, contracted by my future employer to perform the check used Experian to check my credit and other past details. There were some minor discrepancies in the check but enough to hold up the background check. After reviewing online, I was directed to call Experian to clear up the discrepancies, which I did.
Now, over 2 months later, I was reviewing recent activity in my checking account and noticed I had been charged $24.99 per month for a Premium Experian membership which I did not sign up for. I did not provide any financial information, credit card, debit card or banking information and yet, here are 2 months of charges totalling $49.99.
I called Experian to dispute the charges. After much discussion and demanding to speak with a supervisor, the customer service representative agreed to refund only this month's charge and cancel my "membership." I thanked him for that but still requested to speak with a supervisor to dispute the September charge. I was put on hold for approximately 5 minutes before being cut off entirely.
The Visa number ending in 9447 is not related to any of my credit/debit cards nor my checking account number. Yet somehow the funds are being withdrawn from my account.

Experian Boost has only made my credit score much much lower. My bank disconnects OFTEN, and suddenly they "can't find any recurring payments"...the exact same payments in the same linked bank acct that they were conveniently able to find when I was paying for the more expensive subscription with them a month or 2 prior. This is criminal. On top of the fact that a lot of the payments that I do make and is reported to Experian on a monthly basis (that would help my credit score) is not ever actually listed on my credit report. And they keep the negative stuff on the report when it should be removed. Someone needs to look into this company from a legal standpoint. I see a class action lawsuit in the near future...

Experian reports incorrect info from creditors. My creditor reports to them monthly and they do not have any record of it. Their customer service reps are completely incompetent and do not understand how credit works. They have damaged my credit with their fraudulent behavior and should be held accountable. They should not able to operate any longer.

Updated on 08/07/2023: After I recently wrote a bad review about Experian (Boost), I knew that they would retaliate and they did. They lowered my score by 16 points for no reason. Only thing that changed was that I wrote a bad review. With Experian boost they claim that they can't find your bills to report, even though they have access to your accounts. Experian boost is a free service. After talking to a supervisor, he told me that boost is a free service and that I should consider using their upgraded service (which is almost $30 a month), and then they would be able to find all of my bills. How Experian has this much power to hold someone's fico score for ransom is truthfully criminal. I will not pay for their upgraded service. They will continue their retaliation and my next step will be to hire a lawyer.
Original Review: I will start by saying that Experian Boost is a free service. Even though, it is not really a service because their ultimate goal is to get you to subscribe to an upgraded service. They ask you for your account information so they can verify your bills. I had 5 bills, (services), that I wanted to show. Keep in mind, you must have 3 consecutive bills verified for each service to be reported.
The 5 bills that I asked to be reported were my electric, gas, rent, internet and cell phone bills. All of these bills are eligible to be reported and through my accounts you can see that I have paid these bills for several years. So there should be no problem finding 3 consecutive bills for each of these. Out of these 5 bills Experian Boost could only find 2. The two that they found were my electric and internet bills. Problem is, they said they could only find 2 bills for each service. This doesn't make any sense because as I said I have been paying these bills for years.
I phoned Experian and talked to a rep. They said that they would look into this and file a separate complaint for each bill. I do have 5 complaint numbers and when we were filing the complaint, the rep asked me to review my account and give exact dates that these bills were paid and from which account. We reviewed all 5 bills, listed prior dates of when the bills were paid and the rep told me that within 24 I would get a resolution to this problem either through a message in my account or a message to my email. To get to this point, I had called at least 10 times, been disconnected at least 5 times, talked to at least 10 different reps and in the end, the complaints actually got filed.
48 hours later, when I didn't receive any response from complaints, I phoned again. The first rep I spoke to I told her that I wanted to speak to a supervisor. After taking all of my information and accessing my account, she put me on hold. After being on hold for 15 minutes, the call disconnected. I phoned back and basically went through the same process and asked to be connected to a supervisor again. After being on hold for another 15 minutes, I finally got to talk to a supervisor. After explaining everything to the supervisor about everything that had transpired and giving him the complaint numbers, he said it could take up to a month to respond. He also said, "Well it is a free service". My response was, "Even though it is free, it is a service". They require that they have all of your account information and they still can't find your bills, even after I gave them exact dates and which account they were paid from.
Eventually the supervisor and I finally got to what the real issue is, he told me to apply for an upgraded service. I stated again, "Even though 'Experian Boost' is a free service, if it doesn't work, then it is not actually a service." With that being said, after finishing the call, I disconnected my accounts from experian so they no longer have access to them. My recommendation: Go to "SELF" credit builder. For $6.95 a month they will send all your bills to all 3 credit bureaus every month. Even though Experian Boost is a free service, they just want to have access to your account and personal information. I bet is you missed one payment, that would be an issue, but they cannot find your bills when you pay on time. Consider Self or you can pay $29.95 to Experian for their upgraded monthly service.

I have tried repeatedly to get my credit report un frozen and every time I try to apply for credit I am told that Experian has my credit reporting frozen. When I call support for Experian I am told it's not frozen, but Verizon keeps telling me they can't pull a credit report. I had one support person tell me that it never works right and if I really want to un freeze my credit then I need to purchase their credit monitoring services at $25 a month. This give me such a creepy feeling because it's bait and switch type tactics to extort money from me for their service. Terrible user experience for me....

I had a bad customer service supervisor experience with Victoria!! I had disputed 2 Amex cards the end of March this year that I was removed from in 2020 as an authorized user. I noticed several months ago that Experian out of the 3 reporting companies reopened these accounts that's why I disputed it. Fast forward to now these cards are still showing as open and this supervisor Victoria had no explanation except to blame Amex who last updated August 2020 which clearly shows Amex is not to blame. It's Experian system that caused this error but Victoria would not accept it which changed my view of this credit reporting agency from 5 stars to 2!! Sometimes a supervisor just acknowledging an error in their system goes a long way in keeping their company reputation intact!! Experian you have Victoria to thank for this review.

Do not use Experian. They will damage your good credit score. They use credit spending against you. They ruined our credit in only one month. I think to get you to sign up for their high interest yield cards. Bad practice. All they do is gives us a series of excuses and policies to get away with this. The government needs to investigate them. We always pay on time. That's the only thing these companies need to look at. I think this is a scheme to drive down your scores. Don't trust them.

A few months ago I was alerted by Experian that I could help my FICO score by adding things like my rent, heating & electric bills. I took advantage knowing all are paid on time. The following month I was alerted my FICO score has dropped over 8 points without clear explanation as to why. I didn’t think about the BOOST program because I understood it would take 3 FUTURE payments in order for them to track & include in my FUTURE reports. All of my credit cards are paid in full each month. I have worked hard to maintain this habit each month to build up my credit.
Today I called, spoke with “Mike” asked him to explain dramatic drop in score. He stated “ I see you have 5 late payment accounts” I freaked out because he listed off the 5 accounts I added a few months ago to the BOOST program!!! After arguing he transferred me to 1-800-493-1058. I waited 40 mins, then spoke with BILIAM, who told me there are NO accounts showing as late. Biliam went on to say he could not explain why my FICO score dropped more than 12 points. He didn’t know who I could call either to get the answer. Experian is the worst. They have us hostage & we’re left struggling with whatever excuse that frees them from responsibilities.

In no way were they even tied to my name with concrete evidence! Experian looks out for the businesses and not the consumer! Because if I have a higher interest rate or get stuck with bills that aren't mine those companies make more money and therefore support Experian more than I ever would! Not to mention they outsource their call center to a third-world country apparently but don't pass any savings on to me! The consumer they should be trying to protect!

As of today, 11/21/2022, Experian hasn't adjusted my Transunion or Equifax scores since....August 20, 2022!! That's right. I've been paying my balances every month, on time. I have a 5% usage on all my cards combined. A 100% "On Time" payment history that goes back several years now. And they tell me that in order for them to keep my score updated, I need to UPGRADE!
They already have access to my info, and when I tried to deactivate the account, they asked me for my SSN, which I refused to give because it felt "wrong". Experian is always sending me offers for credit cards. The messages says that if I get another credit card it will lower my credit card usage percentage and increase my score, if I continue with the same spending habits. I turned down the CC offers because I don't want another hard-hit inquiry on my report. I felt that I would just drop my usage percentage by paying down the balances on all my accounts and keep them low going forward. So that's what I did.
After paying off all my credit card accounts I thought that it would increase my credit score by decreasing my credit card usage percentage. But, Experian dropped my credit score by 11 points, because I paid off a credit card. I'm so furious at them behind this ordeal. They kept pressuring me to get another card because it would lower my usage but when I pay down my usage I get punished for it. This maintaining a good credit report with Experian is very confusing. When you first create your account with Experian, you sign up for a $25/mo. subscription that will start automatically after the trial period. If they notified me during the sign up that charges would start immediately after the trial if you don't cancel, I didn't see it. It should be made clear when you're signing up, not hidden in small print. I submitted multiple support tickets on day one after they charged me, telling them to cancel the 30 day subscription and refund my $25. I was never able to speak to a human customer support agent. I got an email saying that all they would do is cancel the subscription, keep my money, and leave me with a service I didn't want for another 30 days.
I would not have signed up for the trial if I had realized it was one of those cancel it or get charged scams. I don't have any collections to dispute or anything that would be worth paying for. I only intended to sign up for free credit monitoring. I didn't realize that there will still companies out there pulling this sleazy little stunt. Honestly, I thought the "free trial with automatic membership after, with no notice before it starts and no option to cancel for a refund" thing was illegal these days. I haven't seen a company dishonest enough to employ it in years. It's a scam of the financial services industry and should be investigated!! I was finally able to find a place to write them a letter, but did not find any other opportunities. I do have an email that states, "Your membership cancellation is confirmed. You won't be charged any future fees, but you'll still have access to your membership benefits until the end of the current billing cycle." Which is pretty insulting because the reason I canceled - I cannot access my account. At this point, I would not recommend this service or product.

Avoid any of the paid memberships with Experian! They have no customer support whatsoever. If you try calling, you can not speak with an actual person no matter what the circumstances are. You are given the option of pressing “1” to use the automated system or pressing “2” to end the call. I tried several keywords (including “emergency!”) to get to a live person, and there is no word or combination of words that get you out of the automated system. The automated system is useless, so that basically leaves you in the cold, whether you are paying for a membership or not.
Additionally, the “live chat” feature on the Experian website and in their mobile app always says “all agents are busy,” and never says anything else. There is no actual option to get help from Experian in any way except through their FAQ, which lists questions that don’t seem very likely candidates for the “frequently asked” classification. For both the phone support and live chat support, they list hours of operation, but they don’t actually offer support ever, at any hours. I submitted a notarized affidavit to Experian stating that the 15 accounts they had listed under my profile that were showing a 90-day late payment were invalid and I wanted to have the accounts updated. They wrote back stating the accounts were verified. I sent them my credit report from their direct site showing how my account payment status shows the accounts were on time and then one month they just show a 90-day late payment. This is against the FCRA and they are reporting inaccurate information to my credit profile. These accounts were never late and it's impossible for an account to have a positive status for one month and the next month be 90-days late. I told Experian in my dispute that I wanted a live person to review this case and that I did not consent to e-Oscar or any automated verification processes. They ignored my request and they still utilized automated verification processes.
I asked them to send me the verified information they had showing the accounts were reporting accurately. They ignored this request as well. I'm filing this complaint as the company has violated FCRA 611 Subsection 7: "Description of reinvestigation procedure. A consumer reporting agency shall provide to a consumer a description referred to in paragraph (6)(B)(iii) by not later than 15 days after receiving a request from the consumer for that description. They violated FCRA 611 Subsection 5(A): In general. Experian cannot verify information that is clearly inaccurate. A person can not have a full payment history of on-time payments and then the very next month have 90-days late. Experian's automated system is missing important facts about this dispute and it's causing me damages. If this matter is not resolved I will be filing a small claims suit for1.) Defamation

Having paid the $24.99 "membership(?)" fee, I was greeted with a banner, "pre-approved" credit card offering. Applications for one card then another resulted in credit denials. So much for pre-approvals. Worse yet, the applications for the cards reduced my magical credit numerical value. Experian is in the business of credit evaluation but has branched out into the something-for-nothing business. DO NOT subscribe to their $24.99 per month scam as it will do NOTHING to mend your credit invisibility.
If you're in a position to obtain a credit card, do so by all means. Subscription to Experian's "service" will not help nor hinder your ability to do so. This breach has caused me great anguish, spending 10s of hours to restore my identity, while one of the primary credit reporting bureaus, having been duped, still have the fraudster's information. In the end I cancelled two accounts as a result. One of which I’ve had since 1980. Curious given that the fraudster is in his early 30s. The second time I did... this is the third time and their BBB is 1.8. They are no longer a credit bureau. They are a business. I'd NEVER use any of their services because they are a scam! My credit is well above the normal amount and my bills are always paid ahead of time. My house is paid for and I paid cash for my XLE Toyota that was over 31000. A few months ago my auto lender made a system error and marked me 180 days late with Experian, Transunion, and Equifax. This error dropped my scores about 40 points with each bureau. I submitted disputed with each company, and was in contact with the lender to correct the mistake. Once the error was fixed, Transunion and Equifax returned my score to what it was prior to the mistake. Experian which had dropped 42 points, returned only 13 when the 180 day late was removed. When I called to find out why they said that there was nothing that could be done and that my score is completely controlled by their algorithm. I explained that when a factor that caused -42 is removed from an equation, the end result would be +42. They either did not understand that simple mathematical concept, or they did not care.

But you can't figure out what that reason is. I have NEVER had such a bad experience with a company. And yet we are reliant on them (plus Equifax and TransUnion) for our credit rating. PLEASE READ!!! I called Experian today (7/27/21) around 7:20pm to inquire about an account on my credit file that I thought was deleted several years ago. Conveniently, Experian disregarded my requests each year to receive my free annual report, which would have revealed the account a lot sooner (against FCRA policy and totally illegal). I spoke to Cynthia from the disputes department where I was treated like a common criminal for wanting to dispute an Item. Cynthia refused to give me accurate information about my credit file and argued that she was unwilling to dispute or challenge the information being reported because my name was spelled wrong for years and it was too complicated and confusing. Cynthia implied that the derogatory information in my file must be correct because I have an African name.
Cynthia immediately said that because I had my name misspelled in the past, I must be the owner of an account that does not reflect the correct spelling of my name, address or middle initial, as if anyone who stumbled across a lost ID couldn't use or open an account in someone's name. It is really sad that people like this approach their jobs with the same prejudiced, racist views that she would in her personal life, especially when her job places her in a position to ruin people's lives with their own personal biases. Ms. Cynthia behaved like a cold blooded racist, she was rude, condescending and judgmental, the entire conversation, which confirmed the reason why I and so many other ** people have the hardest fight to remove or rid themselves the negative, derogatory information found therein.
Experian credit bureau and its affiliates go out of their way to hinder minorities and their ability to repair their credit under the guidelines of the Fair Credit Reporting act. Almost leading me to believe that it is in their best interest to keep minorities paying the highest rates for everything due to (questionable) NEGATIVE marks and penalties in their Experian Credit file. They allow anyone to put whatever they want in minorities credit file and will fight the battle personally to keep it there, even when the "Creditor" lacks sufficient evidence that it should be there. Thank you Chad (Experian Representative) for confirming that she lied and omitted notes from my file. Experian has to do better.

CREDIT FREEZE: Blocks new creditors from opening a record while CREDIT BLOCK: Blocks new and old creditors from opening a record. Long story short is that I noticed two odd monthly charges of $24.99 from Experian, which I did not knowingly authorize. What a scam? Despite having no errors on my credit report, the errors with Experian's identity verification system is inhibiting me from applying for rental properties. I spent 3 days on the website trying to figure out what the problem is and trying to submit documents to verify my identity. The website would not allow me to upload any documents even after assuring right file type and size.
I tried a dozen different phone numbers to reach a human being to figure out what the issue is over those 3 days without success. I finally found a number to the business line and it was the only way to reach a human being. Turns out they have been updating their systems and there's an error on my account that they couldn't fix until the following day (which to my knowledge I didn't even have when the problem arose). He gave me their direct line, which when I tried to call back STILL sends you to the same automated system that doesn't allow you to speak to a person. For the first two weeks this service is amazing, until you get a $30 bill you didn’t approve and now have to go about disputing. When you sign up, without providing you the choice, you are automatically enrolled in their premium account. They wait two weeks to bill you so they can just take the information you’ve provided for your credit monitoring and be able to bill you without your knowledge, or you even entering your card details. Turns out this “super neat and helpful” service is only available if you’re willing to pay $30 a month, the free version is to say the least, a bare minimum, which you could just get from Credit Karma instead, they’re actually completely free.
You are only able to even switch to this version by locating your account details and manually changing them. There is no way to cancel or delete once they’ve got you, so don’t think you can keep them out of your business ever again! For a service that advertises itself as completely free and existing to help people, they have proven to be nothing but money hungry frauds who will do anything to scam you out of your hard earned paycheck. The actual services, like IdentityWorks are awesome and I think they work great. The 1 star review is to hopefully get Experian's attention that they need to change their customer service processes. I've had a problem with my IdentityWorks account for a month now, and it's still not resolved. The issue is, you cannot call them. Their 800 number is a joke. A computer answers and demands your SSN before continuing, and refuses to let you bypass the question. Once you give up and give them your SSN, the system gives you two options. If neither of those are your problem, it hangs up on you. If you choose one of the options, one tells you to go to the website, and then hangs up on you, the other gives you two new options, both of which tell you to go to the website and then hang up on you. Getting upset and hitting 0 over and over causes the system to hang up on you.
Whoever you are at Experian who's in charge of customer service, little tip, hanging up on customers will never make them feel like you successfully resolved their issue. If you Google 'contact experian' the web is FULL of different web page purporting to get you to a person, but none of them work, sadly. You know you have a customer service issue if the web is full of websites offering advice on how to actually get to a human at your company.
Also, there is a chat option, but only if pay for the IdentityWorks service (and others, I'm sure). Chat will actually get you to someone but once I finally got through on chat, which kept going offline due to "high chat volume" the person I chatted with had to submit a support ticket. I said, "And how will you contact me to tell me this is resolved?" And the reply was, "IF you're contacted, it may be by phone or email." "Really, you aren't sure they will contact me to tell me the issue, that you verified, has been resolved?" She said no, she couldn't guarantee that. I said, "How do I find out the status?" She said, "Chat back here and check on it in a few days." Perfect.

Compared to my credit report with Experian, it only reflects my credit history after my name changed with total of 3 opening accounts and 2-year length in credit.
Instead of offering a solution to correct customer’s credit history, the operator suggests me to call 25 lenders to request them notify Experian to update customer’s information, according to their company’s policy. Not mentioning the fact that Transunion and Equifax both have my information corrected, Experian should at least be able to retrieve my credit history under my previous name and bring all of them over when they updated my name. There is no way to contact Experian by phone. Never been late on a payment. I used my credit card for our hotel and before the payment was even due, Experian dropped my credit score 50 points which changed my rating from GOOD to fair.

Two credit agencies are reporting incorrect information to Experian and I have made numerous attempts via Experian to correct the false information that is being reported. I have supplied Experian with FACTUAL information on three occasion since April of this year, (2020). Experian claims they have contacted both companies who are providing the false, illegal information and despite my providing correct, factual information which can be verified Experian continues to allow the false information remain on my credit report. What that demonstrates is the gross incompetency of the people who work at Experian.
You have to be extremely stupid to not recognize factual information and continue to post false, fake, illegal information. This so called credit reporting agency should be closed down by the Feds. The morons of Experian have caused me harm in refusing to correct false information on my credit report. What a shame that some jerk is getting paid a huge salary to oversee a company that intentionally refuses to report facts instead of falsehoods.

Upon looking at my bank statement I see a charge from Experian. After going in circles trying to talk to a human was just as bad. Anyways they tried to tell me I signed up for a membership. I never signed up for any membership and they could not provide me with anything showing that I did including an email regarding the membership and the cost. Even after reading reviews I took my chances and this is what it got me. They say that they have fraud protection and they are the ones that we need to be protected from, horrible, horrible company and the robotic people that you talk to in no way can you understand them. Stay away and stay safe. Protect yourself from them.

Experian is a scam. They send random, useless alerts. You cannot contact the company through the website or email. If you call, you wait on hold for 20+ minutes to be told that you must call a different number which is automated and simply a tactic to sell you services. You are not able to speak to anyone about anything substantive. I was provided the "service" free as part of a class action settlement. It's free and more aggravation than it's worth.

I have screen saved every question they have asked to prove who I am to lift a freeze... no problem with other two CA's. Credit freeze because of breach hack. Lost my house with all pin info etc for everything in a total loss house fire. Sent info to address 4 months ago, was able to buy new Jeep because dealership did not use Experian, thank the stars, maybe other will stop using them. Have great credit, in fact, Experian is the highest at 813, but still can't prove to them I am me.

How is this company even relevant in the 21st century? 10 years ago, I placed credit freezes on the three credit companies, following a fraud incident. To this date, I have had no issues with Transunion and Equifax, but nothing but ANGUISH with Experian. For starters, the state I live in requires that security freezes must expire after a seven year period. For whatever reason, 10 years later, there is still a credit freeze on my account, and I am presently left without a viable option to remove the freeze. (Strike ONE) For starters, the Experian website is worthless. It is basically nothing but a marketing tool to sell you additional products and services. There is an option to remove the freeze online, but I have been unsuccessful following multiple attempts. There are no options to email or contact chat/live support. (Strike TWO)
Calling the phone number listed (1-888-397-3742) is an absolute HORRORSHOW. First off, 80% of the time you will end up disconnected, with no warning or apparent reason, so be prepared for that. Second, you can’t get past the directory to speak with a live person. I’ve tried. Multiple times. It’s impossible. You LITERALLY have to give your SSN out first thing, to be even considered to move onto next steps. Assuming you do give out your SSN, now you’re entered into a hall of mirrors re-direct structure, where the menu options actually lead you in an infinite loop of irresolution. (STRIKE THREE)
So, I guess my last and final option is to WRITE AND MAIL AN ACTUAL PAPER LETTER to this dumpster fire, slipshod company. Because apparently it’s 1752, not 2020, and means of electrically communicating sans physical media haven’t yet been invented. Seriously, get your excrement together, Experian. Embarrassingly bush-league. 0 stars, would not recommend. Don’t @ me.

They monitor my credit cards and I saw a 248.00 charge from a gas station in Italy. It wasn't me. They took care of filing the fraud report after I told them it was fraud. They show me regularly ups and downs in my credit cards. What's missing is not showing changes in bank accounts. If I withdraw 5000.00 there is no mention of it. I have had my private info stolen from my work place, my utility bill, and a card scanned at Macy's by a deceptive young woman, which ended up spending money in NYC. Again not me. I would like to be notified when bank accounts are used.

Experian been great to monitor all my accounts. It tracks dark web driver license, medical id, ssn, emails, passwords. You have all in one account and the best thing is I got the membership for free. Also you link your bank account and credit cards.

Been getting jerked around by Experian customer service for 4 months now. I have an issue that needs to be resolved with all the credit bureaus. Transunion and Equifax seemed to have no issue fixing it (fixed it in literally 72 hours). Experian, however, has a level of incompetence that rivals the crew onboard the Exxon Valdez. The agents are deplorably rude, incompetent (knowledge wise) and have no interest in serving their customers. And the issue still not resolved. Absolutely ridiculous.
