What is Pettable?

Pettable provides documentation for an emotional support animal (ESA). ESA letters are provided by mental health professionals to validate your ESA and may be needed by landlords, adoption or rescue professionals. Pettable works with vetted clinicians who screen pet owners and provide ESA letters. It also offers psychiatric service dog training and online dog training resources.

How does Pettable work?

Pettable offers free pre-screening services to start. The rest of the process is done in about three steps.

  • Step one: Once payment is submitted and your appointment is scheduled through the website, you will receive an email to activate your account.
  • Step two: Once your account is activated, the process will prompt you to fill out the required forms to give more information to your clinician before your scheduled appointment.
  • Step three: Your assigned clinician will call you at your scheduled appointment time and will let you know if you have qualified. If you've qualified, your clinician will upload your letter in your portal for you to view and print.

If for any reason you are not approved, Pettable will refund your entire purchase.

An ESA letter can cover up to two animals. If you’re a resident of Arkansas, California or Montana, state law requires you to establish a client-provider relationship for at least 30 days before qualifying for an ESA letter.

Landlords in Montana can also request supporting information about a tenant's need for a support animal, which requires a licensed medical health professional to identify the emotional need the animal relieves. However, the landlord cannot require information about the tenant's diagnosis. The tenant is still responsible for any damage to the property or injury of other tenants.

How much does Pettable cost?

Single ESA letter pricing starts at $119. This is for one letter that gives you the right to keep an emotional support animal under the Fair Housing Act (FHA) regardless of landlord rules or housing policies. For you to receive your letter within 24 hours, the cost is $199. A single Pettable letter covers up to two animals, provided the therapist approves both pets. If you are seeking an ESA for three or more animals, this requires an additional letter, which can be purchased as an add-on.

If you aren’t approved for an ESA letter or your landlord does not accept the letter after filing a complaint with HUD, Pettable refunds your entire purchase amount.

    I like that Pettable is managed through an app so I could just get on there and find the documents. I don't have to keep them anywhere. Also, they ran a promotion at the time so it was a couple of dollars cheaper than the next one that also ran a promotion. I set up an account, and once that is done, I filled out some paperwork on the front end like a couple of surveys about why I needed the ESA. Once all of those were entered, Pettable set up a 15-minute phone call. After that, there was a 24-hour period, and I got the form loaded into the app and an email that the form was ready.

    It all seemed straightforward. I would equate it to the exact process as getting a medical ** card. I'm assuming that the person I talked to at Pettable was a vet. It's nice that they cut the red tape part of it so I could just do what I need for it all to get approved without having to look up what was necessary to make it happen. I used it in Canton. I moved to Toledo and I've used it here too, and it was smooth both times.

      I'm a cancer patient and I suffer from depression and anxiety. I have two cats that are very important for my emotional health. They've been with me through my cancer journey. I live alone and they're my emotional support system. I was moving into an apartment and Pettable enabled me to bring my pets with me and not have to worry about the added burden of a monthly pet rental and of a high deposit fee. They took the stress of trying to find an apartment where I could have my fur kids with me. They worked with my apartment manager and he accepted it without question. He said everything was in order and very professionally done so I've had no problems. Pettable also follows up with me. Every time you have your lease renewed, sometimes the manager requires a new letter. They're very good about reminding me about it.

      I was very impressed with the way the website is laid out. I worked with them online and I was impressed because they were very professional and prompt. They explained to me that an emotional support animal is not a service animal. It doesn't give you the right to take them into restaurants. People abuse that. They're not a fly-by-night kind of outfit that say, "You can take your animal into any restaurant or get them on the airplane."

      Pettable is worth every penny. I love them and highly recommend them for people in my situation. They're very upfront and gave a guarantee in writing. They checked the state where I was going to, to make sure that everything was legal and above board. They said, "For any reason it's not accepted, we'd refund your money. No question asked." When I moved to California, they set me up with a local psychologist if I had to renew it. If I had any questions and I contacted them, they were very prompt, which I appreciated. They got back to me immediately. The psychologist I spoke to was very professional as well.

      I was looking up places to get a reputable document for an ESA animal. I tried some other ones, and they came off scammy. Pettable seemed the most reputable. It felt a little more professional. My rep was very informative, very calm, and very patient. She helped make the process very easy. She even helped me figure out where everything was out online. She was very prompt. I had a great experience with her.

      As far as the service, I was able to get the document that I needed and send it to my property owner. They accepted it. They didn't have any questions. They had sent a specific form that they wanted filled out, and she filled that out for me as well. They're able to work with requests as well. I got a reminder when I needed to update it because they're good for only a year. It's not like a pay fee and they send you a new one. They still have you go through and fill out more information to make sure that you're still eligible for them to review.

      So, I didn't feel like I was being scammed or I was scamming anyone. I felt like even though I was using it to get an ESA document, it also felt good that I was talking to somebody as well. They're asking questions they need in order to evaluate you, but they do approach it like a therapy session, so they are talking to you and there is a real life therapist listening to you even if it was outside of needing an ESA letter.

      I work from home so I'm alone all the time with the exception of having my dog. He gets me outside, but sometimes, you forget if you're just so focused on work or focused on things you need to do. But when you're taking care of somebody, you have to go outside and socialize him. Also, he helps socialize me because I take him out to coffee shops and people see him and stuff and then talk to him. So, it has both expanded the positivity in my life because being able to socialize more, but also being just a level of calm and comfort because I am alone a lot of times, and he's always around. So you kind of have this little life-size stuffed animal.

      I had a friend who had some emotional difficulties and she was trying to get into an apartment in Miami and they said they didn't allow cats. It was a big problem because every winter, I visit my mom in Miami as well and they have the same rule. I happen to have an unfortunate genetic condition and I get great comfort from my cat. So, she recommended highly that I reach out to Pettable. Joy, the rep, has been wonderful, compassionate and a real expert.

      It's the third year that I've requested ESA documentation. In the process, you state that you feel that you're a person of need and they put you in touch with a therapist. That therapist sees whether or not you qualify for it by asking you questions. You also have to fill out some forms. So, they make sure that you are eligible for it. You can never be sure enough. I visit my 90-year-old mom in Miami and even though the building has tons of dogs, for some reason, they said you can't bring a cat. It’s ridiculous. So, you wanna make sure all your bases are covered and there's not gonna be any additional problems. Pettable is quite a relief.

      I did a screening with a licensed therapist at Pettable. I had to open up about certain triggers and what those make me feel. She also asked me about our dog, if I could handle the training and if he would be a good candidate. I shared his behavior and what he's used to seeing and she was agreeing to it. She said, “He has the behavior. He's not hyperactive. He's people-friendly, but he focuses on you, mostly. Those are good qualities.” She explained to me the following steps and what it would take.

      For the basic training, he had to know how to keep his attention on me even if there were distractions around. For the PSD training, it was a little more rigorous. We had to condition him to still have his focus on me and still be able to do the “Sit,” “Come,” “Stay,” which he already knew how to do. Now, he's ESA-licensed. He is PSD-certified as well, so he can come along with me during travels and when I have to fly on planes. There was one occasion where we picked up my parents from an airport. He was very calm and near me the whole time. There was a luggage that fell. It was a pretty big one but he just got out of the way and still looked at me. Pettable is good. I spoke to another friend of mine who she did training with her dog with a different company but her dog is still limited on certain places. I told her about Pettable and she is considering going to Pettable for their next dog.
