What is Pettable?

Pettable provides documentation for an emotional support animal (ESA). ESA letters are provided by mental health professionals to validate your ESA and may be needed by landlords, adoption or rescue professionals. Pettable works with vetted clinicians who screen pet owners and provide ESA letters. It also offers psychiatric service dog training and online dog training resources.

» COMPARE: Best ESA letter websites

How does Pettable work?

Pettable offers free pre-screening services to start. The rest of the process to get your pet registered is done in about three steps.

  1. Once payment is submitted and your appointment is scheduled through the website, you’ll receive an email to activate your account.
  2. Once your account is activated, the process will prompt you to fill out the required forms to give more information to your clinician before your scheduled appointment.
  3. Your assigned clinician will call you at your scheduled appointment time and let you know if you’ve qualified. If you've qualified, your clinician will upload your letter to your portal for you to view and print.

If for any reason your letter is not approved, Pettable will refund your entire purchase.

An ESA letter can cover up to two animals. If you’re a resident of Arkansas, California, Iowa, Louisiana or Montana, state law requires you to establish a client-provider relationship for at least 30 days before qualifying for an ESA letter.

Landlords in Montana can also request supporting information about a tenant's need for a support animal, which requires a licensed medical health professional to identify the emotional need the animal relieves. However, the landlord cannot require information about the tenant's diagnosis.

How much does Pettable cost?

Single ESA letter pricing ranges from $99 to $169. This is for one letter that gives you the right to keep an emotional support animal under the Fair Housing Act (FHA) regardless of landlord rules or housing policies. A single Pettable letter covers up to two animals, provided the therapist approves both pets. If you are seeking an ESA for three or more animals, this requires an additional letter, which can be purchased as an add-on.

If you aren’t approved for an ESA letter or your landlord does not accept the letter after filing a complaint with HUD, Pettable refunds your entire purchase amount.

How to choose the best ESA letter provider

To choose the best ESA letter provider, look for a company that offers professional evaluations and strong customer support. A reputable provider like Pettable will connect you with a licensed mental health professional, comply with federal and state ESA laws and issue letters that meet HUD guidelines.

  • Reputation: Read reviews and testimonials. Choose companies that use licensed mental health professionals (LMHPs) for evaluations and letter issuance. Pettable has excellent reviews on ConsumerAffairs, with customers frequently highlighting the company’s quick turnaround time, easy application process and helpful staff.
  • Services: A credible provider should offer full-service support, including evaluation, letter issuance and follow-up. Pettable goes further than most by helping with landlord forms and letter verification.
  • Pricing: Avoid sites with suspiciously low or high prices. Look for clear, upfront pricing with no hidden fees. Pettable offers a money-back guarantee if you're denied, which is a good sign.
  • Customer service: Prompt, helpful responses and multiple communication options are essential. Pettable makes it easy to get in touch with your mental health professional after you get your letter, in case you need help validating that your ESA letter is legitimate to a landlord.
  • Legal compliance: Make sure the company follows federal and state ESA laws. Its letters should meet HUD guidelines and be accepted by housing providers and other institutions.

How do I know if an ESA letter provider is legitimate?

Pettable is one of the few ESA providers that meet the legal and ethical standards required to issue valid emotional support animal (ESA) letters. A legitimate provider like Pettable will:

  • Use licensed mental health professionals (LMHPs) to evaluate you through a legally required process
  • Offer transparent pricing and clear documentation
  • Never promise guaranteed approval or sell fake "ESA registration"

In contrast, many online ESA services cut corners or make misleading claims. Use the checklist below to avoid scam providers:

  • Instant approvals: Pettable requires a real-time consultation with a licensed therapist. Any company offering same-day letters without evaluation is not compliant with federal or state laws.
  • ESA registration offers: There is no government-recognized registry for emotional support animals. Pettable never charges for “registration” because it doesn’t exist.
  • Pressure to buy: Pettable lets you review options, speak to customer service and opt in on your own terms, with no pushy upsells or time-limited offers.
  • Extreme pricing: If the price is too good to be true (or excessively high), it probably is. Pettable offers fair, flat-rate pricing for its services, including optional travel or housing documentation.
  • Lack of transparency: You’ll always know who you’re working with at Pettable. The company explains each step in plain language and provides access to licensed professionals.
  • False promises: Claims like “fly anywhere guaranteed” are legally inaccurate. Pettable clearly outlines what an ESA letter can and cannot do under current federal regulations.

Are online ESA letters valid?

Yes, online ESA letters from Pettable are 100% valid because they are issued by licensed mental health professionals after a legally compliant evaluation. Pettable conducts the entire process online while meeting all federal and state requirements.

What matters isn’t how you get the letter, but who is writing it and whether the evaluation is legitimate. Every ESA letter from Pettable includes:

  • A licensed therapist’s signature and credentials
  • The provider’s license number and contact information
  • A formal statement confirming your qualifying mental health condition

Note that not all online ESA letters are valid. Pettable does not offer instant approvals or skip evaluations. Those shortcuts can invalidate a letter and leave you unprotected under the law.

Do I need to speak with a licensed therapist to get an ESA letter?

Yes, you need to speak with a licensed therapist to get an ESA letter, and Pettable makes that process easy and compliant. To issue a legally valid ESA letter, you must complete a mental health evaluation with a licensed mental health professional. This isn’t optional; federal law requires it.

Pettable connects you with a state-licensed mental health professional for a live telehealth consultation. No automated quizzes or fake approvals. Your therapist will:

  • Assess whether you have a qualifying mental or emotional disability
  • Write a letter that includes their license number and contact details
  • Ensure the letter meets all federal Fair Housing Act (FHA) and state requirements

If you don’t speak with a licensed therapist, your letter won’t hold up. That’s why Pettable follows a real clinical process, so your ESA letter stands up to scrutiny.

I did my research online, read some reviews, and got an ESA letter from Pettable. It was an easy process, but I also have a reason to have an ESA letter. People need to have a reason to have an emotional support animal. It can't just be, “I wanna make it easier when I go on vacation. And I'm gonna make it easier when I travel. And I can stay in any hotel. And they can't tell me I can't have my dog.” I bet there's a lot of people out there that try to go through that process, but I got an ESA letter done because of what I had to witness on my job. My dog keeps my anxiety levels at bay, so I like to have him with me wherever I go. It's better when my dog's next to me. I got my first ESA letter in February of last year, but I didn't know I had to renew it every year.

Pettable sent me a renewal letter two months early. I thought, “I'll just renew it now. No big deal. And then I won't have to set it up.” I renewed it in December. I set up an appointment with my doctor and she reached out. We had a Zoom meeting, then she sent me my ESA letter and it was quick, 15 minutes or a little longer. However, I didn't know that the letter was going to expire a year from the day I had the doctor's appointment. Now I have an ESA letter that expires this month and then another one that expires in December. They should renew the letter on the day the first one expires. My new ESA letter should expire next year in this month, but Pettable gypped me on two months. Now, I'm gonna wait until the very last minute or let this the first one expire before I do another one, because I can't renew early. Otherwise, I'm gonna lose out on two months.

    Hi Jeremiah,

Thank you for taking the time to share your full experience we truly appreciate your honesty and the context behind why your ESA is meaningful to you. You’re absolutely right: ESA documentation is intended for individuals with legitimate mental health needs, and we respect how thoughtfully you approach that responsibility. We’re glad your dog provides real support in managing your anxiety.

We’re also happy to hear that your renewal process itself was smooth and efficient, and that your appointment and letter delivery were quick and straightforward.

Regarding the renewal timing, we completely understand why that felt frustrating. ESA letters are dated from the time of the most recent clinical evaluation because they reflect your current assessment. For compliance and clinical accuracy, the expiration is tied to the appointment date rather than the previous letter’s expiration date. That said, your point about losing overlap time when renewing early is valid, and we understand why that felt like you were “losing” a couple of months.

Your feedback about clearer communication around renewal timing is incredibly helpful. Making it more explicit that renewals reset the 12-month period from the evaluation date could definitely prevent confusion like this.

We appreciate you sharing your experience and for continuing to trust Pettable for your ESA needs!

    Warm regards,

    The Pettable Team

Working with Pettable was quick, easy, dependable, and convenient. If you have a dog that classifies as an emotional support animal, go with them. I needed their services for my apartment. My dog needed to be registered, and that was a big one because she is an emotional support animal. Having your dog registered properly also waives the fees. Having to pay an additional $300 every month was insane. But essentially, we were being proactive because she will be going on trips and she's a puppy. So, we needed to have that for having her travel and do other things. So, using Pettable is along the lines of what we were already gonna end up doing.

My first experience with Pettable was easy. There was nothing wrong with the therapist, but I wish that there was a little bit more information if there are two people in the household or if you have a domestic partnership. My pet was filed underneath me as far as being my emotional support animal for my needs and necessities, but then in order to also have the communication with the therapist on how she helps my partner, we would have to fill out a whole different documentation. It is annoying. I would rather have it either group or at least somewhere set in place to where we would know that whoever files it, that's the person.

For my lady, even though she has manic anxiety and all these other things that are documented, we couldn't use any of her experience. Everything went through with mine, but knowing that ahead of time would have been nice because she's here for the household. She's not just here for me. I get that it is for documentation purposes. That's the only thing that was concerning. It just caught us off guard. It would've been good if there was something that specified, “Hey, if you have a domestic partnership, whoever files it will be underneath that person.”

Other than that, receiving the ESA letter through Pettable was quick. The only thing I didn't like about it was that they needed additional information. I didn't care because it was super easy and fast to do, but it felt a little bait-and-switchy. I would rather have just paid whatever I needed to pay all the way upfront versus having to pay another fee to prove something else. Everything has to be billed and documented, which is cool, but they could just do it all upfront.

      Hi Ricky,

Thank you for taking the time to share such a detailed and thoughtful review of your experience with Pettable. We truly appreciate both your positive feedback and your constructive insights.

We’re so glad to hear that the overall process was quick, easy, and dependable especially when you were trying to be proactive about housing requirements, travel, and avoiding additional monthly pet fees. Knowing we were able to help you navigate that smoothly means a lot.

We also sincerely appreciate your comments regarding household situations and domestic partnerships. You’re absolutely right ESA documentation is issued for an individual based on that person’s clinical evaluation and needs, which can sometimes be confusing when a pet supports more than one member of a household. We understand how that could feel unexpected, and your suggestion about clearer upfront communication is incredibly helpful. Setting clearer expectations around how documentation applies within shared households is something we can certainly improve.

Regarding the additional documentation and fees, we understand how that may have felt frustrating or “bait-and-switchy.” Our goal is always transparency, and sometimes certain housing or verification requirements necessitate added documentation. That said, your feedback about preferring a fully bundled, upfront pricing structure is completely valid and valuable. We’ll be sure to pass this along to our team for review.

We’re grateful that, despite these concerns, you still found the process fast and efficient overall.

Thank you again for your honesty and for trusting Pettable for your ESA needs!

I went through a traumatic period involving a sexual assault lawsuit, which I did win. During that time, a lot of things changed, including relocating and the need for Teddy to be certified. While I was working, I had insurance, but because the lawsuit was related to work, I lost my job. I now have a new job, but there is a 90-day period before my insurance starts, and I began in December, so I did not have coverage to go through the process for Teddy during that time.

I needed a place where someone could officially diagnose me so Teddy could be recognized as a reliable service animal. During my depression, Teddy was the one who helped me get out of bed and keep going because someone relied on me. I was also moving for this new job, which was a blessing in disguise. I was promoted within my first 90 days, and I wanted a fresh environment after everything that happened. I had just picked up the keys to my new place, so I chose Pettable so I could have Teddy without paying the extra charge. I found them through TikTok. So it was self-driven.

The process to get the ESA certification was good. I loved the person I was assigned with. She was a sweet lady and has animals of her own, so she can understand the need of them. She has two toy poodles so she was a relatable lady, and I liked her. But the process required me to get a second, readable documentation from her indirectly and I had to pay an extra fee. But it’s not a big deal. That was the only headache, but she was able to walk me through it to be able to get that. It took less than 24 hours. It was effortless. It was easy to talk to her and express what I've been going through with my depression and the need for Teddy to be with me.

A lot of times, anxiety is a thing that a lot of people don't know how to deal with themselves and emotional support animals, or any pets in general, are good at it without knowing. Once I got to college, I looked to get an emotional support animal and I heard about Pettable from my mom because we did this for my sister too. We went to the same company and it was super simple and quick. The therapist was really nice. I gave her a call and she was a little late, but I was okay because I wasn't busy. She was really open, got to the point, and asked the questions. I told her and she sent over a letter within 24 hours. I sent the letter to the place I needed it for and they accepted it. If anyone needed an ESA letter, I would definitely recommend Pettable.

Pettable is legit, it helps you streamline the process of getting an ESA letter. The questions are straightforward and easy to answer. The only part that confused me is I didn't see where it transitioned asking about pet A to asking about pet B, and I thought it was repeating the same question 3 times over. However the licensed counselor my case was assigned to was very kind, she asked the questions she needed, helped clarify my misunderstanding on the questionnaire about multiple pets, and explained what to do to contact her through the pettable chat if I needed more help in my process of getting my new apartment. She made it very clear what was and wasn't legal for them to ask me. The phone call with her was maybe 15-20 minutes long and I had my letter by the end of that night.

I was in a rush. I only had a week before my lease was up, to get my pet registered and pettable made it happen in a few days! When I had to use the chat for a follow up question, it did take 2 days to get a response. Which is totally reasonable if you're not toeing the timeline like I was, hahaha. Overall 10 out of 10 experience, nothing was intimidating about the process. They don't ask you any pet medical questions so if you're concerned you can't get an ESA letter for a pet who might not be up to date on their shots or isn't spayed/neutered, don't be! I do wish I would have learned this information at the beginning when I was researching the site because I would have gotten 2 pets as ESA's right away. Still I don't regret going with pettable.

I had a great overall experience with Pettable. The process was simple, fast, and easy to follow. The therapist was professional and took the time to understand my situation, which I really appreciated. Everything was handled efficiently, and I received my ESA letter quickly without any issues. My only feedback is that the cost was a little on the expensive side, but overall it was a smooth and legitimate experience.
