If I could give them a negative I would. I have spent $78/mo for pet insurance on my golden retriever that is 9 years old. I got this insurance 11/2023 and in 03/2024 she had to have surgery and have lumps removed it was over a $1000 my deductible is $500 and they dragged their feet and paid me $200 in like June. I provided all documents. I have paid $708 just for the insurance in the last 10 months, now they want to increase me to $103/mo and making it super hard to cancel there is no option to cancel online. I think they should be reported to the BBB.

I wouldn't recommend this pet insurance to anyone!! It should be negative stars. I previously had Nationwide with my other dog and they were amazing. First, they NEVER answer their phone in a reasonable time. You have to wait and wait for minimum of 30 minutes. BUT if you put you are a new customer they will answer. Second, they deny EVERYTHING! My dog hurt his leg and had an ear infection. Denied. They said not covered. I have had them for years and NOTHING has been covered. No matter what, they find a way to deny. Last, they just keep raising rates for not covering anything! They are the most expensive insurance out there. Do you research!

Be extremely careful and read the ENTIRE manual before you get insurance. If your dog requires dental work or ANY procedure, they stated they will NOT cover any expenses unless you can show you have been taking your dog to the vet for intensive cleaning since the age of 3 years old. They also do not pay for all accidents. They have so many strict policies and try to avoid paying if your accident does not follow the stated incidents. It is insane. Your veterinarian MUST be extremely careful in detailing everything for this insurance to pay. I paid almost 1300.00 in one year and only $16.00 was refunded. A waste of my hard-earned money. Not fair!

Worst insurance ever, I pay extra for "Wellness Care" and they don't want to pay "Wellness" claims. They would rather let your fur kid get sick than pay for "preventative care" that I pay an extra $30 month for, so what are they really paying for? To complain to the company they give you the CEO's address Melissa Gutierres President Executive Officer at Pets Best LLC and you need to "MAIL" your complaint! WE all know where those mailed items go!!! This is ridiculous.. Go ANYWHERE but Pets Best!!!!

Pets Best does not pay their insurance claims. I got maximum coverage on my dog now to requested 12 months a vet history and I only have the dog 4 months and she went to the vet once before she had the insurance policy. I couldn't possibly know her history before I got her and she was checked out by a vet which by the way she was fine. They're looking for any excuse not to pay. Stay away from them. They suck. They would not let me give zero stars at this site. I had to put one star.

We had Pets Best for many years, assuming they would be there for my dog when she was elderly. Such was not the case. Lily became ill, and Pets Best did not reimburse for her medications. I think they are supported by Big Pharma, as only certain medications are accepted for reimbursement. Lily was euthanized because she couldn’t breathe. We still haven’t received reimbursement for that. No condolences either. Stay away from this company. They are awful.

Highly upset that reputable Progressive company is partnered with Pets Best insurance. A fraudulent company whom denies insurance claims for a simple xray after I've paid my premiums for months. Progressive should do away with their partnership and go with a legitimate partner whom I can really Bundle and save. The X-ray showed a hernia in my baby's tummy but they won't pay for the X-ray. I have no confidence they will pay to have it fixed like they claim they will and I pay the highest premium for my baby. The worst!

They are costly and really cover nothing. Every claim I would submit would be returned with absolutely nothing covered, even for emergency visits. It's amazing to me that someone would be paying $40/month for coverage and then get nothing in return. I would definitely recommend another company if you are getting insurance for your beloved canine companion!

Customer service. I called and waited on hold for a representative for 20 minutes and the second time I called I waited 25 minutes for a representative. The woman was doing her best but the wait is unacceptable. I am waiting more that 2 weeks for my claim to be reimbursed just to find out they give themselves 42 days to pay out claims not the approximately 2 weeks I understood it to be. If you have questions or want to speak with a person set aside plenty of time and even then you won't be able to reach someone in the claims department. I probably need to pay into the plan a few more times before they reimburse me so it isn't considered a loss.

I would give them 0 stars if I could. Pets Best has been exceedingly difficult to work with. My veterinary clinic and I have sent all our records numerous times (to prove that something is not a pre-existing condition). I had this insurance 5 months before the condition popped up, so it's 100% not pre-existing. The claim has been opened 3 times, and a vet to vet appeal was used as a last resort.
I have called customer service numerous times, and each one the rep is confused as to why I'm not getting reimbursed because they also have stated it doesn't appear to be a pre-existing condition in the records as well. Another thing to note, they haven't reimbursed me for what is clearly covered in the policy. I've gotten $0 towards the wellness exam for my pet. I brought this up and no action has been taken to correct it. This is just a company that doesn't care about you or your pet, they only want your money.

We signed up with Pets Best when our puppy was one year old. Now, at three years old, we've had a disappointing experience. Despite faithfully paying premiums, our claims for two ear infections were denied as 'preexisting conditions.' Even worse, the processing time for our first claim exceeded two months, only to end in denial. Pets Best appears more interested in collecting premiums than honoring claims. My advice: steer clear of this company, big scam.

My cat had dermatology issue on her back. We went for check up, she got a steroids shot and antibiotics shot. The insurance didn't cover none. They found that 3 years ago she had a record of visiting a vet for overgrooming her belly. They said her back dermatology issue is preexisting and therefore not covered. I purchased 3 policies for my two dogs and one cat. At the time of purchasing my cat's policy I decided to add a wellness plan since he would be getting neutered soon. It only made sense financially to opt in to the wellness plan if I were able to cancel it after his neuter procedure was complete. I was careful to research that I would be able to cancel the wellness plan before adding it to his policy, otherwise I wouldn't have purchased the wellness plan to begin with. My diligent online research confirmed that I would be able to cancel the wellness plan and keep the accident/illness insurance. 3 months later, after spending $1,400 to cover all three pets, I am unable to remove the wellness plan online so I call in. The customer service agent told me that they don't permit cancellation of the wellness plan until the policy renewal (1 year) which differs from the information I found on their website prior to purchasing the wellness plan.
This situation leaves me in a predicament, as I am now obligated to continue paying $57 per month for a wellness plan that no longer serves its purpose. The reimbursement from Pets Best for the neuter procedure was minimal compared to the actual cost I paid the vet, making this experience feel like a significant financial burden and a disheartening waste of money. I urge you to review and rectify this policy discrepancy to ensure that future customers are provided with accurate information before making crucial decisions about their insurance plans. Transparency and integrity in your policies are essential for building trust with your clientele. I appreciate your prompt attention to this matter and hope for a swift resolution to avoid any further inconvenience.

Pets Best claimed that I “didn’t like” the way they contacted me and my vets. That had nothing to do with it. I didn’t like the way they asked repeatedly for a full year’s records for 4 month old kittens. They blame their “system” and computers for the lengthy and unnecessary delays in processing claims. I filed a complaint with BBB that went over the entire mess. They lied about asking my vets for records. They lied about the amount of time claims would take when I signed up and paid a year in advance. They marked my kitten's teething problems as “chronic” no doubt to deny claims now or ever.
Because of the BBB claim and because I disputed the charges for the policy itself they belatedly processed the claims, only to make BBB think they weren’t charlatans and to keep Goldman Sachs from ruling in my favor. For those who read this be aware: if you make a complaint to BBB you cannot leave a review on their site. This means that those looking at reviews are getting the tip of the iceberg. Probably the worst offenses never appear.
PB claimed it was their computer asking for a year’s records, not them. Computers can tell the difference in the insured’s category. Ours was something like 12 weeks to 12 months. And yet they wanted a year’s worth of records. They programmed the computer to kick back claims either to stall or to eventually deny legitimate claims. Don’t count on these people. Don’t give them your money. They intend to keep it. You’ll go broke paying bills based on your trust in their false promises. Healthy Paws has been expensive but their turnaround is less than a week, usually 2 days with the app. I picked PB for dental coverage. Don’t count on it.

Now due the fact a young lady just told me the exam to find out what was wrong with my dog Was not covered, nor was the x-rays was not covered. I asked her to show me where saying in the policy. I know she has to wait the 6 months. But for the examination to find out what was wrong with her why Wasn't the exam and x-rays, wasn't that covered?
Now she said do the had examination, it was due to the fact of a ACL. It was not covered, but it doesn't say that in the policy. But she was telling me that wasn't covered. But she also said anything Dealing with the ACL was not covered. But due to fact, my dog had blood work. That was covered, how crazy do that sound. I have been with Pets Best Insurance for many years. In the past, claims have never taken more than 14 days to process. These are straight-forward claims that do not require any additional information, lab test/results, clarifying notes from the Veterinarian, etc. Over the last 4 months, it is taking 30 - 42 days to settle claims. This is unacceptable. Many of us are Seniors. These are out-of-pocket costs, until the claim is settled.
In addition, there appears to be some gray areas in coverage, especially when it relates to lab tests and/or yearly shots that are required or needed. At almost $1200.00 per year, and in the last 12 years, 90% of my visits are a yearly wellness appointment, this insurance company has done OK by me -- and I am sure as has many of its stockholders.

2.5 years ago I signed up my 6-year-old dog for insurance when getting it for a new puppy. I almost canceled her policy this January because the rate increased and she had a pre-existing heart condition. It seemed silly to pay for insurance knowing she would eventually succumb to something not covered, but ultimately I decided to keep it. In May she had a respiratory emergency and I rushed her to the hospital fully expecting to pay all bills only to discover she had a different undiagnosed illness. We were able to make decisions for surgeries to try to save her without factoring in the cost. I was nervous PetsBest would try to say it was pre-existing, or elective based on her other condition, but they covered everything according to my plan. It did take some time, but they do email saying they have requested medical records from all vets dating back 18 months before your plan started.
Once I called and discovered they had not received all records, I just called the vets myself, had the records emailed to me, and then uploaded them. I think they even recommend this approach on their website. The turnaround time from when I uploaded the medical records to a decision was about 3 days. So, I would definitely recommend them. But know your plan and what is covered. I never requested reimbursement for anything relating to my dog's heart. The bill from May was way and above the premiums I paid into the plan over 2.5 years and would have been a burden for us to pay off without insurance.

After being careful to sign my new dog up for insurance and scheduling the first vet visit after the waiting period, Pets Best still said that his allergies were a pre-existing condition because the vet noted the itchiness had overlapped with the waiting period. Customers and vets need to be WAY more educated about what total slippery bottom feeders this (and likely all) insurance companies are: you can't so much as say a word about any symptom that isn't after the waiting period.
As is, my dog was denied coverage for his allergies, and that means they've ruined his ability to ever have it insured because it's not a cemented pre-existing condition. After paying years of premiums to Pets Best for several previous dogs, I canceled this policy and will never sign another dog up with them again. I wish them a giant pile of karma.

PetsBest Insurance is the worst pet company I’ve ever dealt with. They take forever to process a claim stating they are busy with an influx of claims. In my experience with the several claims I have filed, the lengthy time they take to review my claim is solely used to do their very best to collect any info that might disqualify my claim. My initial claim sat for 3 weeks with no attention. I called several times and was told they had all the info to process my claim. On my final call regarding this particular claim, I was notified that no one has been working on my claim and after 3 weeks and still, no one had contacted my vet for medical records.
I filed a wellness claim that got incorrectly processed as an “illness” claim (twice) under which the services I received were not covered by my medical policy, but were covered almost entirely under my wellness plan (which is of course an additional monthly charge). I called PetsBest and emphasized it was a wellness claim and the claim AND vet records both reflected that fact. The agent helping me said he would make a note about the wellness claim to ensure it would be processed correctly. However, when I was eventually notified of the resolution of these two incorrectly processed claims (since they were YET AGAIN) processed as an illness instead of wellness I did not receive any reimbursement for the visit.
Once again I had to resubmit the vet records clarifying that it is a wellness claim NOT an illness. For my wellness claim to be processed (3 months after the visit and original claim submission) the co then stated they needed an itemized bill of the wellness visit in order to process the claim correctly. When I called the vet to request this info the receptionist said she has never had an insurance company request something like that and she doesn’t understand why the insurance co is being so difficult. My final claim was partially paid out but of course, all the money went back to PetsBest to be paid against my deductible.
I’ve spent over $480 on monthly insurance payments in the course of 3 months. In that time, I’ve spent over $1,000 in veterinary services that were almost all denied reimbursement for. Using PetsBest insurance was a HUGE waste of time and money as the only payout they approved went to my deductible so that’s more money I wasted on for the insurance co to take forever just to do basically nothing. Every agent I spoke to told me different info and they say they’ll call you and update you but no one ever does. Overpriced and underserved.

I'm so grateful for Pet's Best Insurance! My dog recently had a health scare when he was diagnosed with a ruptured growth on his spleen. The cost for surgery was estimated to be around $8,000, and there was a 75% chance that the growth was cancerous. My family suggested putting him down, but I remembered that I had purchased Pet's Best Insurance on a whim last year.
I called them up to ask if this would be covered, and while they couldn't give me a definitive answer without all the documentation, they told me that cancer is generally covered. We decided to go ahead with the surgery, which ended up being a week-long ordeal with complications such as low blood pressure and low potassium. He even needed a blood transfusion! But thankfully, Pet's Best Insurance covered almost all of the $13,000 in bills, minus the $1,000 deductible and 10%.
The biopsy did come back as malignant, and the doctors think that the cancer has already spread. My little guy has 3-9 months to live, but at least I can spoil him for the time he has left. Without the insurance, we would not have been able to afford the surgery and give him this chance. From reading all the bad reviews a few things I seemed to notice that will get people denied. Now I don’t work for Pets Best or have any more insight into what they actually need but it seems a little vague on their website. So, take this with a grain of salt, but this is what I did to get my claim processed with no push back. I never even had to call or talk to them after I submitted my claim.
1) Not doing your annual wellness check on your dog.2) Not having paid the vet bill in full. (The documents you submit must indicate this)
3) Not having at least a years of vet records (see 1).
4) Not noticing that your credit card has expired and allowing your plan to lapse. (On the week I submitted my claim, I log into pets best and notice that my credit card had indeed expired, and they failed to charge my card because of this. Luckily, I noticed the day the bill was due and was able to pay online)
5) Submitting claims for non-covered procedures.
6) Not submitting your complete medical records from your vets when you file your claim.
I made sure all of these things were done before I submitted my claim, contacted the eVet and vet for my dogs complete medical records and all bills from the eVet and made sure they had a zero balance due. I reviewed all documents before submitting caught an error in the age listed by the eVet that did not match the vet and was able to get that corrected. Submitted everything and about three weeks later I was approved! Thank you Pets Best!

Seemed fine at first, except that I wasn't doing the math. Insured since 2020, put in the form for cancelation today because honestly, it's a hassle to be reimbursed + you will never, ever EVER get more out of it than you pay into it. $806.56 a year for a cat to have the best insurance possible (90% reimbursement, $250 deductible, wellness, dental, medication), plus $927.85 worth of submitted claims and they paid out $240.11. This means my costs for my pet were $1,494.30 for the year instead of $927.85 for the year. I can't afford paying $566.45 more every year for a hassle, especially when the premium skyrockets as the gap between what you pay them and they pay you gets too narrow. I'm going to stick what I was paying pets best into savings from now on just in case my $2,400 limit credit card just for my cat isn't enough. I guarantee you that even with my old man of a cat, I'll be saving money not paying for pet insurance.
There's only a few things that could be done to make that $566.45 worth it. The first one is if I never had to submit claims because the pet insurance worked more like medical insurance, where I pay the co-pay and the insurance company sent me a bill for whatever they couldn't cover (or the vet could at a later date after being told by the insurance company it's not covered). The second would be that prescription foods were covered in some degree, you know, because it's a prescription.

This company has been nothing but a nightmare. We went with Pets Best insurance on a recommendation from a friend that had a positive experience with their previous pets. I purchased the insurance when we got our puppy at 10 weeks old. Unfortunately, our puppy contracted parvo shortly after getting her second round of vaccinations. This led us to an emergency vet visit. The visit took place in October and as of writing this in January the claim has not been resolved. I submitted the claim and all of the documentation from the vets we saw in conjunction with the illness.
After several weeks of hearing nothing and calling only to be told they were really busy and things were taking a while our claim was denied due to "lack of documentation from the vet". When I have inquired about his I was first told that the reason was that they needed 6 months worth of medical records for our dog in order to approve the claim. My dog was just over 2 months old when she got sick and after explaining to them that she wasn't alive 6 months prior they tried to tell me that they requested records from the vet and never received them. I confirmed the records that they had were from all of the vets that we had seen for this issue but somehow they had a vet listed that we never saw for this issue or any have seen at any other time. They are unable to tell me where it is listed in our file that this specific vet is listed as being seen. They refuse to believe we never saw this vet and refuse to approve the claim for the vets we actually saw.
Their system of receiving medical records from vets is an email system. One that once the records are sent is rarely checked because I always would call and confirm with my vet the date that they emailed records to Pets Best. I would then call Pets Best and after they tell me that they had not received anything I would give them the date my vet emailed the records and then magically it was found. It has been nothing but disappointing and I whole heartedly do not recommend them. I will purchase a different insurance and cancel this policy with Pets Best as soon as the new waiting period is over. Please look elsewhere for your pet's coverage. My dog has been insured under them since 2018 when he was a puppy. This past month he needed to have some periodontal disease taken care of. Pets Best paid lots of money to write their policy in such a way, that you are misled, and you can't get anyone on the phone to ask about coverage beforehand. They are CON ARTISTS. They state, they will only cover periodontal disease, if your dog has a cleaning, and the periodontal disease is fixed. Once that happens, they will cover it if it happens again, so basically to get periodontal coverage, your dog has to get it twice in 13 months, and they only cover the 2nd time.... WHY NOT JUST SAY WE DON"T COVER IT! - Better off putting the 50.00 a month in an interest-bearing savings account, because this INS co is crap!

They always just keep the positive reviews but as a consumer for almost 2 yrs unfortunately we are cancelling our policy. This insurance doesn’t have compassion to their customers and don’t understand options that they can give to the consumers. They will not inform you if your premium will increase, to be honest I never even got so much money back from our claim even some of the conditions of my pets are covered. Worst pet insurance.

At first, they were very helpful and thorough. But then, after I paid hundreds of dollars for my dog's neuter procedure, I then find out none of it was covered because I didn't have their additional, "Best Wellness Endorsement plan". I had no idea that there was even such a plan to choose from in the beginning. Their customer service then was PATHETIC after the fact. Careful when you choose insurance. Be it for humans or pets, they are all in it for the money.

I have had my dog covered by Pets Best for about 3 years. Never had any real issues until recently when I found out my dog had a heart murmur & needed an echocardiogram. I sent in so much documentation as did my Vet (who has been my vet for 20+ yrs). Closed my claims because I didn’t have the correct info which was complete **- said they could not read the payment. Kept waiting for payment & after 7 weeks told me it needs to be paid in full before they can process it. Why not tell me that the 6 other times I called & spoke to someone or the 10 emails I sent. I just had my 4th breast cancer surgery so have not been able to work & told them that things were really tight & I needed them to reimburse me what should be about $1500 & keep getting a different answer. It's in the queue for payment- - it's being reviewed for payment- today I get it's going to be made a decision on in the next 24-48 hours - WHAT?!!!
It's been 10 weeks now & here is the kicker - you only have 90 days to deal with your claim & then it's closed for good! It's an absolute scam! I will be contacting every vet I know with a detailed letter letting them know what is happening along with a printout of the complaints on this website so they can be aware NOT TO EVER SUGGEST THEM! I will also be contacting my attorney as well as the ASPCA & my Attorney General. This is absolutely not ok.
I am about to be evicted because they won’t pay a claim that has been valid & I have never been late with my premium which was $148 a month up until 3 months ago right before I knew about the heart condition - I had to lower the coverage because of my health situation & my financial crisis. They are incompetent & full of one excuse after another. They should be closely investigated & I will be starting the lead on finding out more to prove I am correct with my documentation & proof. I am EXTREMELY detailed & I recorded all of the calls as well!

I had this pet insurance for over a year. I did a lot of research before picking a company to insure my pets after having a dog die of cancer a few years ago. I thankfully did not have to use my policy during this year (i had not met the deductibles yet), but had decided to cancel it after they raised the rates after the first 12 months to a MUCH higher rate without giving me ANY warning. I noticed when the amount charged to my debit card (deducted from my checking account) was much higher than my normal monthly fee. I decided to cancel my policies on my pets. I received verbal and written confirmation of my cancellation from Pets Best. Several days after the policies were all cancelled and I started getting alerts from my bank that Pets Best was making multiple charges to my debit card (which was linked to my checking account, so the money they were charging was immediately being removed from my bank).
I spoke with a rep who assured me the issue would be cleared up shortly and no further charges would be made. Within only ONE hour after that phone call, several MORE charges were being made by Pets Best to my debit card. I spoke with another representative who was very rude on the phone and informed me that *I* was wrong and they were not charging me, but they were giving me "refunds". I informed him that my bank had confirmed that these were CHARGES and not refunds. Over $100 was already GONE from my bank account in a single day in the form of 5 or 6 separate charges by them in strange amounts that were in no way related to my prior monthly policy fees I used to pay them.
As the day went on and more charges were made by them (DAYS AFTER MY POLICY WAS CONFIRMED AS CANCELLED), my bank got involved and had to report my debit card number as STOLEN to make the charges stop. My bank then went to work in helping me dispute the illegal charges made by Pets Best (for which I had written proof that my policy had ended). Thankfully my bank was very helpful in this, but it is an absolute disgrace that a pet insurance company would do this to hard working people who just want to do what is best for their pets.
I later became aware that this is not the only time this has happened to someone. Read the other reviews on here. I also found that other people in my circle had experienced the same thing. If I could give this company ZERO STARS, I would. Instead of wasting money with this company, just open a separate small saving account and put what you would pay for an insurance premium in there to save for when you need it for your pet. I wish I had done that a year ago. Reading the other reviews on here, it seems there is a huge issue with them not covering claims that are clearly covered services. BEWARE!

Huge scam: I submitted claims in Mid-August. I'm a new client so I understand the time required to collect medical records. What I don't understand is that all my claims were closed without any notification or communication. Had to contact PetsBest on 3 occasions and get a manager involved to have them reopened, then they were closed a second time (again without notifying me) due to incomplete medical records. Took 2 days to get in contact with an agent, had the respective documentation needed sent. I was told it could take up to 30 days for it to be resolved but I had 2 weeks until my insurance was up for renewal.
I mentioned it doesn't make sense for me to renew the insurance if the newly diagnosed heart disease wasn't covered and the manager said "there's nothing we can do about that". She then mentioned I would be notified going forward via email and there has been a "glitch" in their system. I had to contact them at least 2x a day for them to complete the claims prior to the renewal date. They only covered one of the claims which was for newly diagnosed heart disease and didn't cover the other half due to "prior existing condition", when the medical records have written in fine print "new findings on chest x-ray".
With great effort, got in contact with an agent who apologized, validated that this was "very strange" because she looked over the medical records while I was on the phone and said this is a huge mess-up on our part, and gave me paperwork to fill out to dispute the decision made. I asked why no one notified me of the claim not being covered, and she said "my manager told me I didn't have to reach out". I have never had such a poor experience with any pet insurance (I have 2 dogs), I truly don't recommend this insurance to anyone. Very money oriented and impossible to get in contact with someone.

Pets Best is the absolute scam of any insurance. I am calling the BBB, the California Insurance Board and any other place I can urge people not to do anything with this company. They buy their reviews, I have a 10yr dogson. He hasn't been to the vet since the pandemic. Went into this awesome vet that my friends recommended. This was just an initial wellness check up, met the vet, get blood drawn, see what shots he needs, etc. While there Vet listened to his heart and said it sounds like he has a heart murmur, he needs xrays and blood. Later we will need an echogram (650). Left there with bloodwork, xrays. Everything was actually really good. I spent 650 dollars for that. Mind you I'm thinking they will reimburse (from what the reviews say) 80% within a week.
First it took 45 days of which I paid Pets Best 100 a month for 3 months already, my deductible is 500. Lol which is a joke. Every time I called up there were countless excuses. They even used the hurricane as an excuse. Told me they called my vet and they never got them the paperwork (yes they did). I even got them the paperwork personally along with the x ray which showed my dog's heart was good. Last night I received an email saying they were going to reimburse me 8.00. Lol. Cancelled the policy immediately, refused to returned my 300. I paid for nothing. Also just to note they used VET TECHs to determine your claim not Veterinarians. DO NOT USE THEM.

Multiple trips to vet to constantly get a new rewritten claim that is more legible, more detailed, etc., upload them and still one after the other reason for not paying the claims in a timely manner. I had a few visits, one for an ear infection and one for a scratched eye. Both took place after the 14 day waiting period and they refused to pay anything claiming his ear infection was a pre-existing condition and that they took the full refunded amount ($198) from the scratched eye and applied it towards his deductible of $250, well over what his actual deductible is. They have refused to pay anything and look for any reason to pay out. Absolutely do not come to this company.

I read many of the reviews about this company and simply refused to believe they could be true. I assumed that many of the disgruntled reviews were from people that didn't understand how insurance works and what it does/doesn't cover. I'm an accountant and have worked in the insurance industry so I felt like I had a good understanding of the policies and coverage limits. I assumed that if I just followed the policy and procedures and was aware of what restrictions there were, that I and my dog would be fine. I was wrong and I'm paying for my mistake now.
This insurance company is very difficult to deal with. After providing my dog's medical records multiple times (they repeatedly claimed they didn't receive them even though they were literally attached to the same email chain) they ended up denying my claim based on it occurring during the waiting period. Only problem is that the waiting period is 14 days, my policy began on March 17th, and the issue didn't crop up until May 26th. That's 70 days. You don't have to be a genius to understand that 70>14. It's difficult to get someone competent on the phone to get these issues resolved, and good luck getting to a supervisor. I'll be filing a complaint with my State's Insurance Commissioner and I'd suggest others in a similar situation do the same. TLDR Don't do business with these people. Find a better company that will actually honor their policies.

I filed an appeal & it’s been close to 60 days & they still haven’t made a decision saying they haven’t received a referral form from my vet's clinic. On the form it said it was because ligament tears weren't covered even though it definitely is on my policy. When I called about it they said the injury happened within the waiting period, even though the surgery was done after. This is NOT what their policy states. They nicely said "too bad" and I was stuck with a $5000 bill. Not a single item on the list was covered such as medicine or any of the hospital stay. Nothing. All because they tied it to the injury.
The cherry on top, when I asked to cancel, I was auto charged $1 because the claim denial was sent to me on the last day of my payment cycle and the cancellation request isn't effective until the following day. I retired in June 0f 2021 and received an e-mail about various benefits for retirees. One of those benefits happened to be Pet Insurance from Pets Best. I thought to myself, "They are aligned with NEA Member Benefits, so surely they must have been vetted and are a trusted insurance company." I could not have been more wrong!
I took my dog in for an annual checkup On October 14th 2021. (The waiting period ended on October 11th.) I mentioned that my pet had an issue with her ear for the last couple of weeks, and a persistent cough for the last two days. Unfortunately, that was put in erroneously as my pet having an issue with her ear for a couple of days, and a persistent cough for a couple of weeks.
I filed a claim and was denied as they said her cough was a pre-existing condition. Before the denial, when I contacted Pet's best, their customer service rep said that there will be no problem. You will be insured and will receive 90% back minus the deductible. This would have been only $800 out of pocket with the $3200 reimbursement. Right now, I am $4000.00 in the hole as a retiree. I call this unfair.
I filed an appeal as of March 7th 2022. The customer service representative who contacted me on March 8th said that it will take 30-90 days for the appeal to go through. This is pure malevolence as they do not want to insure me because through the x rays on October 14th, a growth was discovered below her lung. Upon further discovery on November 5th via a CATSCAN, it was discovered that she had a carcinoma. And surgery was suggested to remove the carcinoma at a rate of $10000. Obviously, I cannot afford this without pre-approval and the appeals to also be approved for reimbursement. I have previous medical records for my dog back to 2018 to prove that this was not a pre-existing condition.

I have had Pets Best insurance since 2007. That's a long time. When I got them, the coverage was per incidence, so when my dog started having seizures, it was covered for the rest of her life. When it sadly became time to put her down when she was 17 years old (I had had the insurance for 14 years at this point), I submitted the claim for her final expenses because my policy said it was a covered expense. WRONG!
I submitted my claim, and they used the "per incidence" to not cover any of it. But here's the part that really, really hurt... On the Explanation of Benefits, they said this "The claimed amount has been applied to your deductible. Once your deductible has been met, we will begin paying your selected coinsurance amount of covered charges." She had been Euthanized!! There were never going to be any more claims for them to begin paying on after the deductible was met!!! I felt that was heartless.
They also have a very unfair way of calculating the deductible on their policies. I had 80/20 coverage, where they paid 80% and I paid 20%... If I submitted a claim for $100 and I hadn't met the deductible yet, they only applied 20% of that claim towards the deductible instead of the entire $100. After I got the explanation of benefits for my dog, I immediately canceled the Pets Best policies for my other two pets and bought insurance with another provider. Although most people have had a good experience with Pets Best insurance, I was financially and emotionally devastated by their lack of communication, support, and compassion for me and my dog. I signed my dog up for Pets Best insurance after a dear friend of mine recommended them to me. My dog was approaching 7.5 years old and had no current health issues, so I thought it best to sign her up before she developed any.
My dog presented with lameness during the waiting period, and it was unclear to me and my veterinarian what the cause was. The diagnosis was unclear, but it was suspected to be an injury based on the X-Ray. About three months after the waiting period ended, my dog was diagnosed with osteosarcoma (bone cancer) and was recommended to undergo chemotherapy and amputation of the diseased limb, which would have given her another year of life as opposed to two months (without treatment). I thought to myself, “thank goodness I purchased pet insurance!” Actually, I have no one to thank and definitely NOT Pets Best. Pets Best settled that the cancer was linked to the lameness that presented a few months prior during the waiting period, so they labeled cancer as a pre-existing condition, even though my veterinarian records revealed NO EVIDENCE of a cancer diagnosis BEFORE or DURING the policy waiting period.
Pets Best even had my veterinarian records to prove that there was no evidence of a pre-existing cancer diagnosis. Therefore, I would have been stuck paying for all medical costs IN FULL. The limb amputation alone would have cost me $1,000-$2,000 and chemotherapy would have been $400 per session. My dog needed at least weekly chemotherapy which meant that I would be paying, out-of-pocket, $1,600 per month, or $19,200 PER YEAR, JUST FOR THE CHEMOTHERAPY. That is half of my net salary! I am a mental health professional working in the non-profit sector, so this is a HUGE burden on my heart and my finances. I had to make the heart-wrenching decision to euthanize my beautiful dog because I could not afford her care.
Pets Best discriminated against my dog without full consideration. My dog had a healthy medical record with NO EVIDENCE of pre-existing conditions, and they had the veterinary records to prove it. Based on Pets Best treatment of me and my pet, I don’t believe that Pets Best cares about the well-being of their customers and their pets. It’s clear to me that Pets Best will find any way that they can to NOT pay for your pet’s medical treatments by prejudicially asserting that any presenting accidents/illnesses were due to a pre-existing condition. I have lost trust in Pets Best and will NOT insure with them, ever again, and will NOT recommend them.

It was my fault for not knowing, esp it's such a small amount. What is wrong is that despite that low coverage per illness, they wanted to raise my premium 50% just like that only because I used it. So you pay them for years and when your cat is getting older and just when you need the insurance they can just jack up the price straight out. I think it's so unfair and so biased and should be illegal.
