What is PetPartners?

PetParners exclusively offers insurance for dogs and cats through employer benefit packages or individual policies. Base plans offer accident-only or accident and illness coverage. Add-on packages expand coverage and support options to provide truly customized plans.

Available in all 50 states and Washington D.C., PetPartners doesn’t impose breed limits. A unique feature of PetParners is that it offers coverage for some preexisting conditions after 12 months of continuous coverage.

How does PetPartners work?

To sign up for PetPartners, visit its website or use the mobile app. Access the enrollment page, where you’ll provide basic pet information such as age and breed.

You must also answer the question, “Has your pet ever been diagnosed with or shown symptoms of Diabetes, Cushing's Disease, or FeLV/FIV?” Answering “yes” to this question removes the option to choose any plan other than AccidentCare for pets over age 1. (Feline leukemia virus (FeLV) is a highly contagious retrovirus that is dangerous to cats and can be fatal.)

Then, select a plan and enter your payment details. Coverage typically begins after two days for accidents, 14 days for illnesses and 180 days for certain conditions like cruciate ligament issues (the cruciate ligament is the crucial supporting ligament of the knee in cats and dogs).

PetPartners provides extensive details about each coverage option on the quote page to help you pick the plan and add-ons that best suit your needs.

PetPartners coverage

PetPartners typically covers veterinary expenses related to accidents and illnesses for dogs and cats. This coverage includes allergies, broken bones, diagnostics, the ingestion of toxins, surgeries, prescription medications, hospitalizations and physical therapy. The available plans include:

  • CompanionCare Basic. Choosing this plan sets the deductible, reimbursement percentage, incident limit and annual limit for you. CompanionCare plans cover accidents and illnesses. It does allow you to choose add-ons.
  • CompanionCare Custom. This plan allows you to set your own deductible, coinsurance and annual limit. The monthly cost will change based on these options.
  • AccidentCare. This plan offers coverage for accidents and injuries with a preset deductible, coinsurance and annual limit. It only offers ExamPlus, Defender and DefenderPlus add-ons. Choosing this coverage as a solo option is only available to pets nine years and older.

However, it’s important to note during research into quotes through the online quoting system, ConsumerAffairs discovered a few interesting changes in offerings based on age:

  • Pets nine years or older were no longer offered illness coverage, only AccidentCare.
  • Choosing AccidentCare only does not appear as an option for pets under nine years old.

Upon contacting the company about these issues, Gianna Wilson, the brand communications specialist, responded with the following: “Pets that enroll in Accident + Illness coverage before they turn nine can continue to receive Accident + Illness coverage as they age. Per PetPartners underwriting, an age limit of eight [years] has always applied to new pets enrolling in our Individual Accident + Illness coverage.

AccidentCare is available to pets of all ages (over eight weeks for dogs, 10 weeks for cats) [within CompanionCare]... At this time, the AccidentOnly product is only available to pets older than 9 years. The coverage options are largely based on market demand, and we regularly review consumer needs and our product mix to determine the options that are marketed.”

PetPartners add-ons

PetParners offers several add-on packages to provide more complete coverage for pets. The available add-ons include:

  • ExamPlus: Enhances coverage by including reimbursement for exam fees for sick or injured pets.
  • HereditaryPlus: Specifically designed to cover hereditary (passed from parent to offspring) and congenital (from birth) conditions, providing comprehensive protection for pets susceptible to genetic health issues. Provides coverage for chronic conditions like arthritis, diabetes and heart disease.
  • BreedingCoverage: Tailored for breeders, it provides coverage for illnesses and complications related to breeding, including pregnancy, whelping or nursing and emergency cesarean sections.
  • SupportPlus: Provides coverage for expenses related to end-of-life care such as cremation or burial, urns and memorials.
  • Defender: Covers routine care such as vaccines, flea, tick and heartworm prevention, blood work, microchip, urinalysis and deworming.
  • DefenderPlus: Builds upon the Defender package by increasing reimbursement amounts and including coverage for spay/neuter surgery or annual teeth cleaning.
  • AlternativePlus: Included with all plans, this coverage allows up to $1,000/year for alternative medications and treatments. This includes treatments like acupuncture, chiropractic, herbal supplements and vitamins, along with diagnosis and treatment of behavioral problems.

What PetPartners does not cover

PetPartners doesn’t cover treatment for illnesses regardless of cause under accident-only plans. It does cover preexisting conditions after a 12-month waiting period, but some conditions are still excluded, like a bilateral condition, which refers to a health problem that impacts both sides of an animal's body.

For instance, if a cruciate tear occurs in one leg before the coverage period and a similar injury arises in the opposite leg afterward, it would be considered a bilateral condition under the policy and would, therefore, not be covered.

PetParners doesn’t cover these conditions or concerns either:

  • Intervertebral disc disease (IVDD) if diagnosed before coverage or during a waiting period
  • Any services not performed by a licensed veterinarian (e.g., over-the-counter treatments, grooming)
  • Conditions related to repetitive activities (e.g., foreign body or toxin ingestion that occurs more than one illness or injury per coverage period)
  • Elective and cosmetic procedures (e.g., spay/neuter, ear cropping or tail docking)
  • Conditions related to specific activities like racing, security, law enforcement or organized fighting
  • Intentional acts (e.g., abuse such as hurting a pet on purpose to make a claim or neglect)
  • Deliberate endangerment (e.g., leaving your dog in the car on a hot day, resulting in heat stroke)

When ConsumerAffairs asked Wilson if working and athlete dogs were uninsurable, she said, “Working dogs, including athlete dogs, herding dogs and service dogs are, in fact, insurable and eligible to enroll in a policy. With regard to working dogs (defined as police or law enforcement dogs, guard dogs or racing dogs), the policy would not cover an illness or injury that was a direct result of such work. Non-work related accidents or illnesses (if applicable) would be covered if otherwise eligible.”

ConsumerAffairs used the online quoting system to gather quotes for two different aged dogs in the same area (Los Angeles, California). Low versus high shows the lowest cost compared to the highest cost for each pet. We organized the quotes into the tables below:

Yes, PetPartners is a legitimate and reliable pet insurance provider that offers a variety of flexible coverage options tailored to the needs of different pet owners. It provides nationwide coverage without breed restrictions and includes provisions for some preexisting conditions after a 12-month waiting period.

While it has notable exclusions, such as not covering working dogs (such as police or military dogs) or bilateral conditions (a condition that affects both sides of the body, such as cruciate ligament tears), it can be a great fit for pet owners seeking customizable plans and extensive coverage options for their dogs and cats.

Pet owners should carefully review the specific terms and exclusions to ensure the policy meets their pet's health needs.
