Please, please file a complaint with the FDA. We all have something in common here and this company needs to be investigated immediately. Our extremely healthy and happy coonhound got so sick and the only change in her diet was a fresh bag of Nutro wholesome essentials purchased on 1/15/13. She is not getting any better.

I have a 6-year-old female pug and a 3-year-old male pug. I've been feeding them Nutro Adult (chicken, rice and oatmeal formula) for about 4 months. Let me first remind you, I've had no issues with either of these dogs until now. Over the past 2 months, I've gone through so much. The 3-year-old male first experienced diarrhea. I took him to the vet and a couple antibiotics later, we were back to road to health. Then shortly after, he started urinating blood. No stones in x-ray, but I'm waiting a month to do another lab test. Then about 3 weeks ago, he had anal glands protruding out of his rectum. He has also gotten ear infections in both ears. This was all in the past 2-3 months.

The 6-year-old female pug also had her first anal gland issue a few weeks ago (exact same thing). Now she has an ear infection, vomiting 2-3 times a day of mostly bile. Tonight was the first night she did not eat. The vet yesterday gave me some medicine for the nauseousness and said she should feel better in a day. Well she is getting worse. I honestly started thinking I was doing something wrong because both dogs are getting sick all of a sudden. Then I thought it was the dog treats. So tonight, I decided to Google the brand of dog food. I'm absolutely in shock, but a little relieved to know something is causing this. I'm changing food ASAP! We need to stop this before it happens to others!

I have used Nutro for years and switched to their Natural Choice when that line came out. I had 2 hairless Chinese Crested dogs (a male ~10 years, female ~7 months). I always buy the light pink bag and then supplement with the soft Small Adult food (3 flavors). I recently bought on 1/9 the new formula hard food (darker pink bag). On 1/12/2013, Saturday, my older dog suddenly experienced liver and pancreas failures; internal bleeding, etc; and his blood work went off the charts. He had just had blood work and was very well in November 2012. We had to help him pass on and he is sorely missed. Then this Monday, 1/14, my puppy started vomiting red blood and had black, bloody stool. The vet put her on IVs for 2 days and switched her immediately to Hills Science Diet for gastro intestinal health.

She is now home and I am hurt and angry. I heard that Nutro uses ingredients from China and makes the final product here so they can say made in USA. In addition, there is no recall. They are opening a file to investigate and asked for a food sample. PetSmart is still selling it and I am so afraid for others who might lose their best friend.

If you have a problem associated with this food, save the bag and call this number: 1-800-833-5330. I am convinced it made my dogs sick and it's called a liver test. I've fed this food for years and they have changed it! I am so angry that it made my dogs so uncomfortable and sick. If you insisted on feeding this to your dog/cat, I sure hope you get regular blood tests for your poor dog/cat. I changed their food, and after 4 days, I noticed a huge difference.

Our 7-month old pup (part border collie, part Lab) eats anything and everything 3 times a day. We gave him his cup of kibble and it is gone before we barely turn around. Until about a week ago, same kibble, same pup but he walked away from his food dish with food left over. Lunch, same way. Finally at dinner, he ate most but even then did not finish. After a few days like this, we got smart and tried some can food we had around. Old eating habits, he gobbled it down. So we tried some different kibble and the eater is back. He was turning his nose up to an almost brand new bag of Nutro Large Breed Puppy (he had eaten the first 20% or so) so we think the bag had turned bad and he was smarter than his owners. Read these other comments and we have learned our lesson. Nutro is out.

I rescued a dog and it came to me with terribly loose stool, gas and a terrible skin and coat. After a few months on Natural Choice Chicken Rice and Oatmeal, the dog has firm stools, no more gas that clears a room, and scars that healed over with fur. It is not the same looking dog that was about 35 pounds under weight. I would recommend Nutro to anybody and everybody. All these complaints but there is no proof that it is the food and not some issue with the dog ... C'mon, really?!

I have given my dogs Nutro food for over 20 years and had been very pleased with it. However, within the past few months, one of the three dogs eats the Natural Choice Small Breed formula and has had an episode of diarrhea twice now that required vet care with antibiotics. On the second occurrence of diarrhea, there was a lot of blood with it. When we took a sample to the vet, they told us that there was no healthy bacteria in her stool. They again gave us antibiotics along with probiotics to put on her food. After reading through other instances, I am wondering if it's her food causing this problem now?

I can't believe that I still read horror stories about this brand. Three years ago I was feeding my 3 dogs that brand and they got sick, I decided to check the dog food forum and cats and dogs were getting sick and dying. When I buy dog food and I see pet owners buying that poison, I tell them, “Please read the Internet reviews. Please do not poison your pets and that brand should be banned.”

I have been feeding my 8-year-old golden retriever Nutro dry all of his adult life. I recently let myself run out and when I got to the store, I could not find Large Breed Weight Management as the packaging (and apparently the formula) had changed. It was suggested to me that it was perhaps time to switch to the senior formula anyway. At first, everything seemed fine. Moose loved his new kibbles! But halfway through the second bag, he began vomiting, sometimes just yellow bile and sometimes undigested food. He was eating grass and his thirst was increased. He became less interested in eating.

I assumed it was just stomach upset due to a busy holiday season and added some cooked rice to his food to encourage him to eat. The vomiting disappeared for a day or so but soon returned. Yesterday, I had him to the vet. Luckily, his bloodwork is clear. He is on a gastro-friendly diet for a few days and taking anti-emetics. Hopefully, this will be the remedy. While I am not positive the Natural Choice Large Breed Senior dry dog food is the cause of Moose's illness, I am not taking any chances. I will not purchase this brand again.

I switched my dog to Nutro's grain-free formula about 4 months ago. My dog loves the food, but I noticed his stool has been looser. Most recently, I purchased their new-looking bag (went from light blue packaging to darker blue). My dog is still eating although he is puking up yellow bile on almost a daily basis and eating grass nonstop. I started to do some research online and found the complaints here. I noticed that they are all the same story of what I am experiencing. Sadly, many are much, much worse. As of today, I am throwing out his food and going back to Science Diet. Rather than just voicing our complaints in here, please also call their consumer relations line and tell them your story: 1-800-833-5330.

On December 26, I bought a 5lb bag of Nutro Natural Choice Senior dog food (main ingredient: chicken) for my two senior dogs because I was out of town and couldn't get their regular, veterinarian-prescribed food (Hill's K/D). On the 27th, 28th, 29th and 30th, one of my dogs, a lab, had violent seizures. He has never had a seizure before. The other dog, a shepherd mix, vomited the same days. My wife read online about dogs having seizures and vomiting because of Nutro dog food, so we stopped feeding it to them. The lab has had one more seizure but has been okay for the past two days since we stopped feeding him the Nutro. The shepherd stopped vomiting immediately after switching her food. Be careful!

Our German Shepherd mix had been eating Nutro Natural Choice Chicken Meal, Rice & Oatmeal formula for sensitive stomachs for at least 4 years without problems. We did not realize Nutro was going to change the formula until it was too late and our PetSmart only had the new formula. They reassured us though that they only took things out of the food, so we thought it would be okay to just feed our dog the new food. My wife and I fed this food to our dog for a week and nonstop vomiting and diarrhea ensued. We took her to the vet and went on a hunt for pet stores that still had the old formula dog food in the old style packaging. We fed our dog only the old formula food and as you can guess, my dog's stool and health immediately became better.

Thinking that maybe the new food was introduced too soon, we started mixing the old food with the new formula food. We started with an 80/20 blend and within just two days, the diarrhea returned! There is something very wrong with the new formula or something wrong with the new style Nutro food in general. We are going to throw out the new food and try and move her to a different brand now. Two days of a 20% blend, which over two days was just one cup and our dog gets sick? That's not normal. Nutro needs to be reported now.

I have been feeding Nutro Lamb and Rice to my pets for 13 years until just recently. My two Terriers passed away more than a year ago from natural causes and I acquired two more, a Wheaten and a Welsh. Both dogs were on the same food and doing well until about a month or so ago. We also met a Nutro rep at the pet store and she was telling us how the new formula was so much better. I absolutely hate it when dog food companies change their formulas! If it works, you have repeat customers for life. Now I will never buy that poison again.

Shortly after starting the new food cold turkey, both dogs started exhibiting strange behavior. My Welsh started becoming very aggressive and would not let us touch him. He was biting and behaving very badly. We spent good money on Vets and behaviorists trying to figure him out, but we also noticed that our Wheaten was doing the same thing - pacing relentlessly, spinning in circles and being very aggressive whereas he was always shy and calm. We were actually afraid of our Welsh. We knew something was wrong, and I know from being a dog owner for many years, you always look at "what changed" first. Nothing had changed, other than the food.

We took them off Nutro and put them on Hills Science diet. Within a week, our Welsh had come back to be himself again, although he has thrown up bile a couple of times. Even the owners of the doggie daycare we take him to, noticed a change. They actually asked, "What did you do to him?" He was behaving again being the loveable little boy we knew before. Our Wheaten is still having issues, but he has only been off the food for less than a week now. We are praying things will get back to normal sooner than later.

Upon reading many other reviews, it seems to be more than a coincidence that something is going on that should not be with this food. Use your own judgment to decide if you want to put your pet on this food and please read what others have said, many have gone through much worse and tragic experiences. We just hope there is no permanent damage, otherwise if there is, any lawyer out there who have pets on this food, a class action lawsuit maybe a thought.

I have the same experience as the last reviewer. I purchased the Natural Choice Senior Indoor cat food (a week ago), which my cat has been eating for at least four years with no health issues. As soon as I opened a can from this batch, she vomited a few hours after eating. She also had loose stool and was extremely thirsty. She has been like this for three days (vomiting and loose stool), and I finally decided to google the food to see if I could find any info. I am horrified that this has happened. I hope she does not have any permanent damage. I will never buy this food again and plan to get the word out!

We recently purchased a new bag of Nutro Natural Choice Senior (pink bag) dog food. Nutro has been their normal diet. This wasn't a change of diet or a brand change. After consuming the food, all 3 dogs have become ill. The first dog started with vomiting. All 3 then had runny diarrhea that showed signs of blood progressively getting worse. The sickest of the 3 dogs then had severe, watery diarrhea - mostly blood. She was seen by our vet yesterday, 12/27/12. They sent out a stool culture and sent her home with meds since she was not running a fever. Last night, she quickly became deathly ill. We rushed her into an emergency clinic. They suggested she was too ill and suggested she be put to sleep. She was only 8 and very healthy. We are completely devastated.

The stool sample came back clean with no sign of parasites. The other 2 dogs are being seen by the vet now, as we have to focus on them in hopes they do not die as well. I called and reported the possibility of the food to my local pet store and spoke with a representative at Nutro. I have the bag of food. I'm hoping our vet can run tests on it as well as testing the stomach of our dog that passed this morning. I know this is quick and vague. I'm very distraught at the moment. I came across this website last night while researching. I was shocked to see the very recent similar accounts from other pet owners.

Has anyone received any response from the company? Have they found out anything? No pet owner should ever have to go through this! I will put together a better account of the facts as I receive results from my vet. RIP Pixie, 12/28/12.

I am absolutely disgusted with Nutro dog food. I have used it since I got our dog was a puppy and he is now 11 years old. When we went to purchase another bag, we thought that we were getting the same product that we have always got. As soon as he started eating the new bag, he began to vomit bile almost everyday. We called the pet store where we purchased it and they told us that Nutro had changed the formula and that may be causing the vomiting. Looking into it further, we found that the pet store has had endless complaints about that product. What is wrong with Nutro? We feed our dogs this, trusting that it is okay for them to eat. It's not, it makes them very sick! Again, this is very, very disgusting!

However, recently, both of my dogs were vomiting some bile with blood, and sometimes chewed up food right after they ate their Nutro dog food. One of them was just diagnosed with pancreatitis. Hmmmm, I wonder why Nutro recently added oatmeal (good for sensitive stomachs) to their food. I am appalled and I will inform the FDA as well. Two of our dogs have eaten Nutro dog food, both dry and canned, for several years. Our oldest dog ate a dry food recommended by our vet. Over the past few months, our two younger dogs have had frequent spells with diarrhea (sometimes bloody) and vomiting yellow bile. We went to the vet and the dogs were treated for their symptoms but it flares up on a regular basis. Last October, our oldest dog had her teeth cleaned. Because her mouth was sore, I gave her some of the other dogs' Nutro canned food. Within 3 weeks, she was dead from liver failure, crystals in her urine and pancreatitis.

Yesterday, both of our dogs were vomiting again so I decided to research and found this site. Now, it all makes sense. Their dog food is making them sick. I pray we are not too late for the two younger ones. We are awaiting the results from their blood work. I am so angry that this food is allowed to be sold. I hold Nutro accountable for the death of our oldest dog and for the illness of our two younger ones. I intend to inform every national pet store chain and other consumer rights organizations. I hope that other owners will follow.

All I know is that I bought Max cat wet food from time to time over the last two years, although I normally feed my 3 cats Science Diet dry and wet. About 4 weeks ago, I decided to just feed the cats Max wet because it was a few cents cheaper and also continue with dry on the side. I took my boy cat to the vet about 3 weeks ago for a lump on his tail, but also noted his normally somewhat loose stools were really getting bad. The doctor was more concerned about the bump which turned out benign. I added some pumpkin to his Max, hoping it would get better but gave up when it didn't seem to help. About 2 weeks later, I noticed one of my females also had soft stool. I went away overnight to come back one night to a kitchen full of vomit and also diarrhea all around the litter box. I realized now it was not only my boy, but also my girl who never had problems.

I gave her some syringes of water to prevent dehydration. I thought perhaps my girl had eaten spoiled food the day before I left, but then remembered my boy had been progressively getting worse. I took my girl who was really vomiting and defecating nonstop to the vet the next morning. I spent $500 on tests with nothing found. This included x-rays, a pancreatic and regular blood test panel. The doctor gave her subcutaneous water and recommended human baby food. I went home and separated her from my other two to keep watch. At that time, I realized my other girl also had diarrhea. At any rate, I then saw this site and got really scared. I decided to be safe. I will not feed them Max cat anymore. Luckily, all got better within two days and have been fine ever since I went back to Science Diet.

I am not sure if there is a correlation using this food, but I would really watch. I feel so unsure about this wet. I won't use the remaining cans nor will I put them on the street for strays because I am very nervous about it. I will probably write the manufacturer for a refund and see how that goes. I believe they had mostly turkey and giblets, but also think they had some chicken and lamb formula and had thrown out the empty cans. I felt it my duty to add to this site because I think anyone who uses this wet food should watch their cats like a hawk and take them off if there are any problems whatsoever. I have been a kitty owner for over 20 years and never have had a situation like this before.

Our beloved Athena, a Pit Bull/Staffordshire terrier mix, deserves a full review but when I read all the posts here, it’s only repetitive of what everyone else is saying. Athena passed on Dec. 7th, 2012 after more than 3 weeks of suffering and $5k in vet bills with nothing conclusive other than liver failure and pancreatitis. She ate Nutro Ultra Large Breed Adult 3 times before succumbing to the bile vomits, refusal to eat and more than 20 lbs. in weight loss. Our vet specifically asked us about changes in food, table scraps, etc. but at the time, I only found a recall in 2009 and did not find this site till after she passed.

I am beyond angry. We had her on Nutro Natural Choice her entire life. It changes to Nutro Ultra and now she is dead. Thanks Mr. Big Manufacturer for taking away our family member. Thanks for making me have to explain to our three year old why Daddy cannot bring "Atina" home (she is still riding around in her tricycle with dog bones in her trunk waiting for her dog to come home). We lost a stunning 6-year-old male from a brain tumor that appeared practically overnight in 2010. Thought nothing of it. He was a puker and could clear a room with SBDs, but we thought nothing of it. We didn't ask for an autopsy with regard to the liver. It may or may not be related, but we're putting two large beautiful dogs down in the span of three years. However, our 10-year-old female (my princess) is dying at present. Although her spirits are good and she is doing well with her treatment, her liver is gone. She apparently had a liver spell a few years back, perhaps that is when we think her damage started. She is diagnosed with advanced cirrhosis of the liver. We have spent in thousands, but her spirits are great. When we can get her to eat, she responds very well to her new diet and treatments.

We have shopped around and tried so many different things, and I have spent more than one night awake with her when she struggles. We're lucky we can afford to do this at this time. I feel for all those who can't. Both dogs ate Nutro Dry Lamb and Rice dry dog food exclusively during their time with us. Nothing is going to bring Zeus back. Nothing will take the pain away when we put Sydney down. But if there was a deliberate collusion or omission by the producer, Nutro needs to answer for it.

I write this through tears and a broken heart. My 7-year-old (one month shy of 8 years) white Labrador, Nikko, is dead because of Nutro Natural Choice dog food. It never occurred to me until it was too late. He died within 3 weeks of eating this new stuff, folks. We realized something was wrong when he would eat his food then drink and drink like a mad dog. Having him drink so much sounded odd at first. Then I asked my husband what food he bought. My husband said the same dog food we always get him; however, the label/packaging was different. After a week of eating this food with the new label and drinking water like crazy, he just started to vomit. Everything he ate and drank was coming up.

The second week, his hair was falling out by the handful. I am fully aware that Labs shed but not like this. He didn't really eat much but still drank a lot. We tried to feed him carrots and lettuce which is a treat for him, but no go, he vomited that up as well. We scheduled an appointment with the vet for the next week and that was great because she is hard to get an appointment with.

We rarely feed our dogs table food. When my Coton de Tulear, Ambi, was pregnant, my vet suggested we feed her boiled chicken. Well, Nikko got into that bowl and that was it. He loved it. But we never really gave him chicken often. By this time, we tried to mix his food with boiled chicken just so he would have something in his stomach. That night he ate it. Whew, it was great he ate something, but an hour later it all came up.

When we made it to the vet, she immediately said, "Something doesn't look right with him." It had only been 2 weeks since the new bag of food. She took blood, urine and stool samples and then we were told that he had diabetes, liver and kidney issues and his system was shutting down. She wanted to take more tests to see what else the problem was. We couldn't afford to let him stay overnight having already spent $797 for the vet bill (and that was a discount), so the vet put him on Hills Prescription Diet I/D food just so he would eat something. Yea, that came vomiting up too.

Four days later we took him back to the vet and he lost 8 pounds. That's four days later, eight pounds! Two days later he was dead. That was December 7, 2012, 3 days ago. It was one month away from his 8th birthday. Not four weeks ago, Nikko was arguing with the mailman, chasing his little sister, Ambi, around the house and was a husking healthy dog. He died 32 pounds underweight with his sister sitting by his side. What makes this even worse is my 16-year-old daughter came home from school, opened the front door and saw Nikko lying there first.

All my dogs ate were Nutro Rice and Lamb, Sweet Potatoes and Venison and the Senior blend. I researched this food when they were puppies. I fed them this food so they would have a healthy life. We had him for less than 8 years. That's not a long life to me, not for a healthy dog. Please, people, spread the word. This company is destroying our pets, our furry family. We thought we were doing the right thing by buying this overpriced dog food to find that it was killing them. Please talk to your friends about this. I don't want anyone to go through what we went through. We are devastated! So is everyone that met him. He was a great dog. I am so angry and I need the pain to go away! So sorry for the long review - I can't even see what I'm typing anymore. I hope I've made sense to all who read this. Just look at my big boy.

I have a 5-year-old girl Beagle, 6-year-old boy Beagle and a 5-month-old Lab. They were all on Blue Buffalo and everything was fine. Around the middle of November, I was at Petsmart and a Nutro rep or something started telling me how great Nutro was and went through a big spiel. It worked. I switched all of them to Nutro Natural Choice Large Breed Puppy & Lamb and Rice. The first week, I noticed that they were not eating like they normally did and I thought they were maybe depressed. The girl was peeing in the house which was driving me crazy. She wasn't pooping. They weren't eating the food and my Lab was breathing really heavy and they had a weird smell. It was like a sweet, tarry, musty smell. I can't describe it but it was making me sick.

The Beagles were anxious all the time and pacing the wood floors all day long and circling around tables. All day and most of the night, it was tick, tick, tick, tick non-stop. They had never done anything like this before. They were always calm and mellow. By the second week, I had to stand there and tell them to eat, over and over and they wouldn't do it, so I would mix gravy or hamburger in the food. On Wednesday, I went to Petsmart to get anxiety medicine and grabbed Nutro Crunch Peanut Butter Treats. It was about 12:30 am and I decided to give them some treats. They looked so miserable I just wanted them to be happy again. I gave them 6 or 7 treats that night. They finally went to sleep on their bed. At about 1:00 pm, I was lying on the couch, trying to fall asleep and it looked liked my girl Beagle flew up and over the other Beagle and hit the floor. He jumped up and ran and peed on the floor. She was lying on her side, stiff as a board. Her eyes were open but she was frozen and she was foaming at the mouth.

I just started screaming for my husband. The whole thing was scary. He came out and was lying by her. I was trying to put cool washcloths on her and it lasted about 10 minutes and she finally came to and started growling and then she got really hyper and it seemed like she was really happy, if that makes sense. I looked up her symptoms online and it looked like she had a seizure. Well, she fell asleep on the couch and I decided to take her to vet in the morning. About 1 hour later, there was another thump. She fell off the couch and was on the floor doing the same thing. It lasted a couple of minutes, but seemed like forever and when it stopped, she was hyper again. There was also some weird dark stuff on the floor, it didn't look like diarrhea but more like water with coffee grounds in it. I gave her vanilla ice cream, made sure she ate some hamburger and all that. We went to the vet the next morning, got some blood work and I wasn't even thinking about the dog food.

I searched through the whole house, inside and out to see if there was something she could have gotten into that could have caused this or if I could find any bugs, anything that could explain this but found nothing. I found some articles that said rosemary extract is a neurotoxin and causes seizures in cats and small dogs and large dogs, have adverse effects and they continue to absorb the ingredient and neurological damage continues. This ingredient was in all the Nutro food, so naturally I was pissed. I couldn't find a number for the company. It only allowed an email, so I did and then I found all this stuff about Nutro on the internet. I was and still am shocked and I am seriously pissed off. I got the company number from Petsmart and called. The call rep was talking to me like I was stupid and said she has been in the veterinary business for 20 years, which to me, in the business does not a vet make, but anyways she said it is not harmful.

They bring pets to work and give them food and treats all day and all the people who write the blogs get paid every time someone goes to their site. It was a joke and you could tell she was reading from a probably well-rehearsed script. I did ask her if she could guarantee me 100% that their product didn't cause my dogs seizure and she did, 100%, but did and said they received no complaints about their products which is crazy, because they are all over the Facebook page and send the same message for all complaints. I am sure everyone has read it. I returned everything I could and dumped the rest. I was told to keep a small amount of each for tests, which I did. Everything is finally back to normal since they have been off the food. Right now, I consider myself lucky compared to most and find that this is outrageous. How do you compensate someone for killing or damaging their pet? You can't, and it's obvious they don't care anyway. I am telling Cesar Millan. Maybe he will be able to help stop them.

We were feeding our 9-1/2-year-old German Shepherd Science Diet for Older Dogs. A lady at PetCo raved about Nutro Natural Choice Dog food for Senior dogs and said that it would make him feel young again because it had glucosamine and chondroitin in it, as well as other good things found in premium dog foods. We'd read that Nutro food had caused these sorts of problems with dogs, but we were very skeptical thinking that maybe the people who wrote the reviews were angry people and blamed Nutro for their dog's issues. We decided to try it. First bag - Our dog loved it. He gobbled up his food and always looked for more. His coat got very shiny and there was a pep in his step that he probably hadn't seen for a long time.

Second bag - It was more of the same. He always ate everything. He got nice and lean. Third bag - All of a sudden, one night he jumped up in the middle of the night and darted towards the bedroom door. He piddled his way to the back door and finally burst outside. We thought he just drank too much. The next few days, he looked like he had a doggy stroke. His left eye quit blinking. He drooled nasty mucus on the left side. He tilted his head and couldn't hold it up straight. He got lethargic and stumbled around the house, his left ear flopped over. He continued to bolt up in the middle of the night and wanted to go outside. He lost his energy and his coat started getting very dull. We took him to the vet and they thought he might have an infection so they gave us antibiotics, which didn't work.

We changed back to Science Diet and our Shepherd miraculously has gotten better. He is definitely not 100% but he holds his head up straight again, has quit drooling and he doesn't stumble when he walks anymore. Thankfully, we changed foods in time or we may have been another unfortunate dog owner who had to bury their dog. Heed the reviews if you love your dog. Nutro is very high priced and it's like playing Russian Roulette with your dog's life.

I have had rotties for 20 years and always fed the Nutro large breed. Recently, I switched my 18-month-old from the Nutro puppy to the Nutro large breed. The bag said "new formula". Sad to say, I didn't do my research because I had always fed it and have never had any issues. If you've read any of the posts above and/or other websites, you'll know what happened next. My story is the exact same as all the others who are having problems. My hyper, happy puppy started vomiting, had diarrhea, weight loss, lethargy and she was refusing her kibble but eating anything else you put in front of her. I know sometimes in Canada, certain foods have different formulas and with Canada's stricter laws, I thought this would always be a good choice of food. Wow was I wrong. Thank God my dog only ate half of an 18kg bag before I discovered all the websites. I told my vet that I thought it was the food and they just said, "There is no recall on Nutro."

It cost me $500 for blood and fecal that all came back negative. Still had no answer. I talked to my retailer and she informed me that a vast majority of the Nutro products are being returned to her store because her customers were complaining about sick pets. The only change in my dog's life was the new formula of Nutro large breed! I switched immediately to Legacy chicken. Made in Canada. My baby is back to her old self after a month! As I look back at the dates on the posts above, I can't believe how long this has been going on! Certainly, thousands of people who are having the same issues with their pets can't be wrong? Even my dog knew that something was wrong with the food. Why is this still going on!

I purchased this dog food two days ago, two days! I was excited at first because my dog really seemed to love it. I came home the first day after he'd been eating it to vomit in my bedroom. I've had my dog for almost two years and the only time he's vomited was when I made him for eating something he shouldn't have. I found it very odd, but thought it was just a one time thing. This evening, I came home and he has now vomited a second time on my bed! The only thing that has changed in his routine is the food. I also noticed that his stool went from being dark and firm to soft and tan in color, almost diarrhea-like. I will be taking this food back, and I refuse to ever purchase this brand again. It's stamped with a Made in the USA label. Why are you people making a product that is literally making animals sick?! I'm beyond upset and am damn right furious!

I started feeding Nutro Natural Choice Senior Chicken and Rice canned dog food to my senior toy poodle. She had intestinal cramping and diarrhea and started creeping off with her tail between her legs, hunched over and hiding under the bed. This occurred for two weeks. She was tested for parasites twice and both tests were negative. Two days ago, I switched over to Nutro Natural Choice for Sensitive Skin and Stomach and the problem seems to have resolved. Today, the PCR lab results for intracellular pathogens came back positive for overgrowth of Clostridium Perfringens. I don't know whether the Nutro Natural Choice Senior Chicken and Rice canned food was responsible for the diarrhea and cramping, but the inception of symptoms coincided with starting it, and resolution of the symptoms coincided with stopping it.

If a representative sample of people report problems with the aforementioned Senior food, it should be investigated. The batch number on the bottom of the cans: "Best by 08-15-20 S 233ESN (or is it H?) SC0211:21-N (or is it H?) SD. I hope someone looks into this. Our pets are precious to us. We brought her home, and she continued to vomit. She became lethargic and weak. We brought her back, and the vet took blood work, which resulted in our dog having acute pancreatitis - which we believe was due to the Nutro new and improved dog food. It was only after switching to that food did our dog become sick. She had none of these symptoms prior to switching her food. Our dog died on Thanksgiving morning 2012, and I believe it is the Nutro food that caused my dog to become ill.

I read so many complaints about others who bought this food for their dogs with similar symptoms and sometimes death. One day, he was fine; and then the next, the vet said there was nothing we could do. I have written the company but heard nothing in response. Towards the end, Angus refused to eat. I believe the food is what made him sick over time and do not think it was a coincidence. I would encourage you all to look up the facts about Nutro's recall and see for yourself. I work a police K-9 German Shepherd. He is currently 7.5 years old. I started working when he was 1.5 years old and he has been with me ever since and has had great health. When I first got him, he was on another brand of dog food. I noticed that he constantly had an infection in one of his ears. After consulting my vet, she suggested it could be a food allergy and suggested that I try a different brand of food. So I researched, talked to other K-9 handlers, family and friends and heard good things about Nutro. So I switched to the Lamb and Rice Large Breed formula. After about a month the ear infection was gone, his stools were normal and consistent, and he had great health and energy. Recently I noticed the "New and Improved" writing on the bag. I noticed that the food looked different than before, smelled different than before, and was shaped different.

Since he has been on the "New and Improved" formula of the Lamb and Rice, we have experienced health troubles. He began with having a hard time passing stools, would get diarrhea, would vomit, and would have the urge to go to the bathroom many, many more times throughout the day. His lips and gums have swollen and he is constantly licking his paws and I have noticed sores on two of them. I took him to the vet and they put him on antibiotics. This has not cured the problem. At this point they cannot find any medical reasoning for his symptoms. The only thing that has changed in his life is the food being "New and Improved." My next step is to discontinue feeding him Nutro to see if that solves his issues. Reading some of the reviews on this page, I see that many others have had the same issue. I am extremely disappointed and angry with the changes that have caused my partner's health to be compromised.

They did blood work and all was normal, so we decided to do X-rays; and barium after the X-rays weren't definitive in a diagnosis. The vet found what he thought was a blockage, and we decided to go forward with surgery. When he opened her up, he said her intestinal track and lymph nodes were extremely inflamed, and that investigating the intestines, he didn't find an actual blockage. She stayed in the hospital for 2 more days after the day of surgery because she refused to eat and wasn't taking medication orally. Thursday of the same week, both of my other dogs (a rottie mix and another pit bull mix) started vomiting excessively. I rushed both of them to the hospital, and they gave IV fluids and anti-nausea medication. The vet told me to toss that food. It is the only thing that has been different. I will never purchase another Nutro product again. That food almost killed my dogs, and I put one of them through surgery due to this poison! Will Nutro refund me for almost $2,000 of vet bills? I liked the fact that their stools were always well-formed, never soft or runny. About a month ago, when I purchased their dog food, I noticed it said "New and Improved" on the bag and the graphics looked somewhat different on the front of the bag. But I didn't think anything about it. I noticed when I opened the bag, the food smelled different than what it always smelled like. I didn't think too much about it at that time.

I began to notice that they would smell the food in their bowls and walk away sometimes. A few weeks later, I noticed my dogs vomiting on and off, sometimes undigested food, sometimes yellow bile. I noticed them eating grass in the yard. I've also observed that their stools that were always well-formed are now soft and at times runny. Never have they had problems like these before. Now after reading this forum, I understand that many pet owners have observed these same symptoms in their dogs after they ingested the "new and improved" Nutro.

About a month ago, we were running low on our 8-year-old beagle's food. When we first got him 5 years ago, we have heard good things about Nutro. Since his regular food was not available, we decided to give it a go (the Lamb and Rice small bites). We mixed it with his old food for a few days to ease the transition, but he seemed to really like it and did not have any initial issues. We keep a pretty close eye on him as he is on meds for epilepsy. Fast forward two weeks and he was having severe abdominal pain; so much that he was pacing and couldn't get comfortable, and was throwing up. He seemed better after that, so we thought it was a one-off.

However, he started getting less and less like his usual self. He was still eating and playing, but his playtime was definitely a lot shorter and wasn't at his normal super-excited pace. Last Sunday, our little guy again had serious abdominal issues and threw up numerous times. This time it didn't subside. He would pace, groan, and try to lie down but then violently jerk up. We took him to the emergency vet and after x-rays, blood work and an ultrasound; the vet could not see anything that could be causing his distress. She gave him an anti-nausea shot and told us to feed him a bland diet for the next few days and if he seemed better, we could gradually reintroduce his normal food. If he didn't get better or appeared worse, we would need to go back to our local vet. Luckily, he is a pretty tough guy and has been doing much better, but as Nutro was the only change in his life, it had to be the cause - especially after seeing such similar stories here.

Some people may say that it was probably something else that he ate but he is an inside dog who has zero access to garbage, household products, minimal human food (only carrots and a small dab of peanut butter for his meds that he's been eating since we got him), and we do not use any sort of fertilizer or pesticides on our lawn (I am a stickler for not letting him walk on any grass that appears to have been treated).

My 15-year-old Doxie has been on Nutro Senior for years. The last bag I bought said "new and improved". After just a few meals, my poor boy got diarrhea and sometimes runny dark spotting or seeping. We've been to the vet and all the bloodwork came back normal. I put him on special food and some Metronidazole but we've had no luck even after a week. Then, the vet put him on high fiber food, probiotics, and Perm-a-Vite. It's been 3 days and I'm not seeing the progress I think I should, so I'm sure we'll be back to the vet again this week.

What's going on with this food? I am so angry with the Nutro Company. When I called them with my concerns, Nicole said that they haven't had any complaints or concerns with the food; then I find this site. They're liars! Shame on you Nicole, and the Nutro Company. It's been one month and my poor boy is still sick, and I have $320 in vet bills; and still climbing!

About 2 weeks ago, the Nutro rep in my local Petco convinced me to switch from Science Diet. In those 2 weeks, my dog has lost weight, and the last two days, has been throwing up. We took her to the vet, and after lab work and X-rays, they could not find anything wrong. I found this site, and cannot believe how many people are having the same issues. I'm really not happy that my girl got sick, and also with the $400 vet bill. I really think an analytical report of this product needs to be done, as well as a class action suit.

They have been throwing up, lethargic, and experiencing bloody diarrhea. Lab results have been done for everything under the sun, and all came back normal. Now, I see that there are many complaints of dogs getting sick with the same symptoms. Vet had suggested to change food, but as a loyal Nutro customer and not seeing any recalls, I haven't changed it until today. I will no longer buy Nutro and will advise all the owners of dogs that I know, as well as I will make it go viral on Facebook that Nutro dog food is what's making my dogs sick. Everyone knows what I've been going through for the past few weeks with lab test and vet visits. Recall Nutro dog food and investigate to see what ingredients are making the dogs sick.

As of today, he is no longer eating Nutro brand foods. And here I thought I was buying a top of the line product for my beloved companion. I checked out Nutro on Wikipedia and it has some pretty scary facts on there too. So what do you do in times like these where pets are being poisoned and/or sickened by what we are feeding them? It just seems that I am hearing so much about different brands. I don't know which way to turn now.

I have been using Nutro Venison and Wild Brown Rice in my Aussies for years and have been satisfied with it. But since the formula change, my dogs have become ill with loose stools and vomiting along with a noticeable decrease in energy and they just do not feel good. They have thrown up bile intermittently, but I thought it was just because I wasn't feeding them enough or that it was too far in between feedings so I upped their food intake. After speaking with my veterinarian and treating them, they seemed to get better, until the meds stopped. I knew it was because of the formula change but the symptoms were not getting better. I called the company and got a message that all of their customer care reps were in a team meeting and to leave a message so I did. I never heard anything. I emailed them and never heard anything.

I had already purchased a different food but wanted to see if there was something going on with the food that I needed to know about. Now that they are on a different food, they are slowly starting to get better but they are still lethargic. I found this site while doing more research on foods and I am shocked to read review after review detailing the exact same symptoms my dogs have been having! It is more than just a coincidence. I will never use Nutro again and I am terrified that while I thought I was feeding them a premium food, I was actually causing them harm. I am disgusted and angry!

I decided to check on the Nutro rewards program because we feed our black 11-year-old lab the new senior formula. I came across a bunch of reviews about this food making dogs vomit and even one dog who eventually died from liver cancer after being fed Nutro dog food her entire life. Well, guess what? Our 11-and-a-half-year-old lab had liver cancer and died in March of 2011 and she was fed Nutro dog food most of her entire life! We had switched to Hills Science Diet grain free for our second lab and my husband thought that she didn’t really like the food, so he went back to purchasing the Nutro Lite for senior dogs. Since starting on this food, she has vomited 2 times and has been eating grass more than she ever has before.

I am giving thanks to God today for leading me to the site where I read all these reviews, because now we are going to stop the Nutro food and go back to the Hills Science Diet. I can't say for sure that this food caused my oldest lab's liver cancer. However, reading the review about the dog that died from liver cancer and being fed Nutro makes me wonder. I bought my 14-year-old Pomeranian "Cookie" Nutro brand Natural Choice in July 2012. She was eating Blue Buffalo, but even the small bites were difficult for her to chew. I thought I was buying her quality food. I purchased the toy breed size of Natural Choice. After just a couple of days of being on Nutro, she started to vomit yellow bile. I thought that she had a little bug or something. By day 7 and 8, she had severe diarrhea, vomiting yellow and could not eat and looked uncomfortable. I took her to the vet where they gave her fluids under her skin and also injections for nausea and stomach pain. They also drew blood. She continued to vomit and have diarrhea.

The vet called me that night and told me that her liver levels were the highest she has ever seen and to bring her back to start her on medicine called Denosyl to help with the liver levels. My dog was going into liver failure and they gave her more fluids under the skin. I started the pills and I made chicken and rice for her. She seemed to be doing okay. From July 15, 2012 to August 9, 2012, my dog started to show the same symptoms again. I watched my dog pace in pain and look so sad that it was affecting me. I kept with the medicine and boiled chicken and rice. On August 23rd, she could hardly walk and was so uncomfortable. I took her to the vet on Saturday, Aug. 25, 2012 and her liver was enlarged. My dog needed to be put down because she no longer had quality of life and I could not let her suffer any longer.

This food is trash. I miss my dog! And if it was not for this food, my dog would still be here! My dog had no illnesses and was at the vet in June with no issues, just a checkup. I bought this food at Petco and took the rest of that food back to them. They had no explanation. They said there is no recall, that the company Nutro did not contact them at all. The sad part is people are losing their animals and Nutro is doing nothing about it to find the reasons or give comfort to the people who lost their animals. I want to know if Nutro will give me my dog back. I lost my best friend and part of my family when my dog died.

He told me when I got home, so I started watching her closely. That night I gave her some Nutro can dog food (Max Senior chicken and rice). I have had her on that for the two years that I have owned her. Maddy is around 11 years old and was my daughter's dog before. That night she would not eat the food and that is not like her. No matter what, she always eats. So, I threw it out and got out another can because I thought to myself that she was telling me something. Anyways, she ate the food and I thought okay, there was something wrong with that can of food. So, I called the 800 number on the can and the girl that answered from consumer service said they didn't have any complaints about their dog food.

I talked to my sister about it and she looked online and called me back and said they had 1,221 complaints about Nutro dog food. A couple of days later, Maddy had another seizure, so I took her into the vets and they did tests of Maddy. One was for her liver because I told the vet that I thought it was the food. He said you can't believe everything you read. He thought different when the test results came back and her liver was elevated. He then told me I should contact the FDA. I did and they got back to me and said that they take these things lightly and they contacted my vet and Pet Smart where I bought the food and were gonna contact Nutro as far as I know.

Anyways, to make a long story short, I changed Maddy's food to AvoDerm and within this last month she is a different dog. She hardly sleeps anymore and has no more diarrheas in the house. She is happy and running all around. It's like she is 5 years younger. I can't believe the difference. I pray they get this food out of the market before another dog dies or gets real sick! My cat was on Nutro Senior chicken and rice and she died of cancer also at 12 years old. This may be a consequence, but I don't think so. I had him on it for 8 years.

Nutro has messed up again. They are in the process of changing the formula on their Natural Choice food. They told me on the phone there were e-mails sent out and signs were to be posted in stores. I went to Pet Supplies Plus, Petco and PetSmart today and could not find any of the food I feed my dogs on the shelves. Not one store could tell us when it would be in and not one of these stores had any signs up telling me of any formula change. As any responsible dog owner knows, you cannot just up and change a food without digestion problems. With no old formula and no new formula on the shelves, we (pet owners) are going to have a lot of sick dogs on our hands. Even changing a formula within the same brand can cause illness and needs to be done slowly. When I called Nutro, they even agreed that the change from the old to new formula should be done slowly. This were the exact words from an employee who claimed to be a vet tech.

Nutro said their marketing department was to handle this. That is a laugh since they did not. I am on their e-mail list and have never received anything about it. This tells me that Nutro does not care enough to make sure consumers are aware of their products and even trying to print coupons from them does not work. I e-mailed them 4 times about the problem (and I have Java installed) and they have no record of my e-mails. I was told an outside company handles their coupons. Maybe Nutro needs to take a step back and reevaluate their procedures. I have used their product for years because of its affordability and lack of cereals. But now I refuse to use it again and have to switch my dogs over to a new product. Fortunately, I have enough of Nutro to do a slow switch and not affect my dogs. Customers need to know this and it should be announced on the news. We are going to have a lot of sick dogs out there!

Early on this year, I reported that my dogs became ill after eating Nutro foods for a while. I did not know what was making them sick until they took themselves off the food by refusing a single kibble. They thought other food offerings were all just fine - two dogs at the same time refused the food. I've always heard that animals have a keen sense about these things and I believe that they knew the source of their problems before I did. Nutro refunded my money, but that doesn't touch the costs of our vet bills and the pure agony that we went through with sick pups.

I am, however, happy to report that both are feeling better and are showing no signs of illness. They look better - no bloating in the stomach as before. I really believe that some batches of food are contaminated and maybe some are not. That might explain the one guy who thinks the food is great food. It could be that he was just lucky enough to get good batches. I hope his luck holds out. I personally wouldn't risk it ever again.

We started our dog off on the large breed Nutro food, as the PetSmart employees ranted that this was the best food they sold and it was all natural. It was pretty pricey, but we purchased it anyway because we only wanted the best for our dog. Shortly after we bought this brand, our dog began to throw up yellowish bile a few mornings out of the week. We switched his food to the sensitive stomach Nutro food and he began throwing up every morning.

After a few weeks, his vomiting became more and more frequent until this past weekend when his vomiting had increased to about 10-12 times in one day. By the night time, he was extremely lethargic and couldn't go more than half an hour without vomiting. He refused to eat boiled chicken and rice (usually his favorite) and we became extremely worried. We rushed him to the emergency animal clinic at 3:00 in the morning and had ultrasounds and tests run on him to find out if there was blockage in his digestive system. $540 later, the vet said there was absolutely nothing they could see wrong with our dog and it must be a food allergy. Since our dog was completely dehydrated and couldn't even hold water down, he was given a rehydration pack as well as anti-nausea medicine. We took him home and ceased use of the Nutro brand dog food.

We started feeding him small portions of chicken and cottage cheese as recommended by the vet. He hasn't vomited once since being home and off the Nutro brand. We did research and came upon this website and were mortified when we read the reviews. We went to an all-organic local pet feed store and told them our experience. They showed us research upon research of how this brand Nutro is in one of the top 20 brands of what not to feed your animal, as it has ingredients in it that cause liver cancer. Also, there are ingredients in this food that humans are not allowed to consume because of how harmful they are to the digestive system, yet Nutro puts it into their dog food to feed our animals?

We will never buy Nutro brand dog food again. Also, we will make sure that every pet owner we talk to knows that this terrible brand of food is killing dogs one day at a time. I do not recommend Nutro. It is not all natural. We have a 5-year-old Lab/Pointer Mix. He never had vomiting issues until we, regrettably, introduced him to Nutro.

I have been feeding my dog Nutro Natural Choice Senior for the benefits of Glucosamine and Chondroitin. For several years, no matter where I buy the food, once I open it, I notice a very foul odor. I've called the company many times and they keep assuring me the food is fine. I have bought and returned Vittle Vaults storage containers, and still it happens only with this food. The brand I feed my other dog always smells fine and fresh, and my other dog has none of these symptoms.

I have watched my dog become more and more ill. His vomiting yellow bile in the morning once in a while is increasing in frequency to daily and in the evening as well. I have returned and bought new treats. I stopped giving him tap water and used bottled water. His big brown eyes became droopy and sad. He was becoming lethargic. His stools were not always well formed. His coat began to thin out. He was passing gas as well. But, why would I suspect the food? Nutro kept telling me it was fine! I was running out of options and becoming very desperate and concerned about my dog's health and what was I doing to him?

Well, I am just describing that a few weeks ago I started changing out the Nutro food for another brand and it just so happens his symptoms have been subsiding. I have no idea or proof what is contributing to his illness or wellness, but these are just the events as they happened. The vomiting has stopped. He is looking at me more alert. He has resumed doing his happy dance at the end of a meal to get his treat. Also, in the process of weaning him off the Nutro, he is actually giving me signals very subtly, because he can tell even when it's all mixed together which is which and he is favoring the new food picking out the pieces. We are almost 100% weaned off Nutro.

Now, I still have attempted to communicate with Nutro. Once I express my concerns that my dog maybe getting ill from their food, they hang up on me and when I called back, they don't answer. They can see my telephone number when I call. I left a message for the CEO, David Ansell, on his personal recording and he ignored me as well. I left a message for the supervisor and never got a call. Their lack of concern bothers. It bothers me that I may have been making my dog ill.

There is not much anyone can or will do. But if anyone is having any issues with their pet and this brand of food, just in case, take the time to notify the FDA in your area, and then file a complaint. If they get enough complaints about this food, they will consider looking into it. It is only sheer numbers that will influence any investigating. Our pets are relying on us to advocate on their behalf.

Mind you, I had purchased the 40lb. bag and at this point, they are both suffering from loose stools. After spending the holiday bringing the food back to pet store, who refunded our money, I am now cooking rice and chicken for the next couple of days until they feel better. With all the hype about Natural Choice, I was extremely misled into thinking it would benefit our dogs. Now, I am nursing two sick dogs.

In March of this year, 2012, my 2 1/2 year old Akita became very ill with GI problems including vomiting blood that is still happening today. I had just purchased a new bag of the Nutro Large Breed Dog Food that he ate when his illness started. Not realizing at first that it was the dog food, led me to eliminate other factors. I am thankful for this website because I probably would not have concluded that Nutro's dog food needs to be thoroughly investigated by someone other than the company. I have come to the conclusion that it was the Nutro dog food that likely made my dog sick. I am disappointed how Nutro has handled complaints.

When you call them, they tell you they have had no complaints, yet there are so many complaints on this website where pet owners have contacted them. I recommend that if you believe Nutro pet food has made your pet sick, to also post on their website. I find it very interesting that there are so many 5-star ratings for Nutro Large Breed Dog Food on Nutro's website, yet only 1-star ratings for that same dog food on this website of Consumer Affairs. I posted my review this morning on Nutro's website and if I find that it's deleted, I will repost here to let you know. My recommendation is that if you have pet food from Nutro you believe made your pet sick, to have it tested at a facility outside of Nutro. Also, save the bag and dog food.

If your dog is drinking and urinating excessively, have a urine sample checked. My 11-year-old golden retriever became very sick 18 days ago. Symptoms are vomiting, diarrhea, excessive drinking/urinating, and refusing to eat anything. She's been eating Nutro Ultra Large Breed Food for 4 to 5 years. She was about a week into the latest bag when she got sick. I went to the vet and did blood work and X-ray. Lab works looked good and X-ray showed slightly gassy colon. I started her on famotidine (reduces stomach acid) and Cerenia (anti vomiting). Next day, no improvement; back to vet for IV therapy. Next day, no improvement; went to a specialist vet and had ultrasound done. It showed severely inflamed colon.

I started her on metronidazole (antibiotic). After a couple of days, there’s a slight improvement and she started eating boiled chicken in small amounts. When she seemed to be eating a little more, I gave her about half a cup of the Nutro (not thinking it might be the food) which she vomited up within a couple of hours. Then back to square one, not eating etc. I went back to regular vet and did blood work and IV therapy. Blood work was still good. I started her on prednisone (steroid). After a few days on prednisone, we went back to the specialist vet and did another ultrasound which showed inflammation of the colon much improved. While there, the vet also took a urine sample with catheter which showed high bacteria count, but no white cells which is somewhat unusual. I started her on baytril (antibiotic). I am waiting for culture to be done to see what kind of bacteria it is. After 6 days on prednisone and three days on baytril, she seems to be improving steadily.

I talked to my neighbor who is a chemist and works in quality control for a large company and I asked if it was possible that Nutro food is contaminated with bacteria. He said it's possible and the first place he would look is the slaughterhouse that the meat products come from. I'm going to call Nutro on Monday and see what kind of quality controls they have in place and see if I can get the Nutro food tested somewhere, maybe local university. On a side note I did learn that there is a disease called Addison’s that has many of the same symptoms, but also muscle weakness which my dog does not have. But you can't test for it while on prednisone. Once you start prednisone, you can't just stop it. It has to be tapered off slowly or it can cause serious problems. I think about 12 days for us so talk to your vet about any test they might want to run before using prednisone. I do not, at present time, have any proof it's the Nutro food that made my dog sick, but if and when I do, I'll post again. Good luck, God bless, dogs rule!

My dog has been very ill since last night after eating a newly-opened bag of Nutro Large Breed Puppy. He is a six-month-old Yellow Lab. He was perfectly fine until after eating. I know he didn't get into anything to make him sick as we fed him and went out for a few hours. He was confined the entire time. We came home to two piles of vomit in the morning. We found some diarrhea (something he never does as he is house-trained) and all day, he has been having watery stool, panting, drinking excessively and urinating a lot.

I have made a vet appointment for 6:00 pm tonight. I am very worried as I had owned a dog with kidney failure and he is behaving the same way. I do not see a recall. I purchased this bag at Petco in Kinnelon, N.J. I am convinced the food has made him sick, there is nothing else. This was his first meal from a new and unopened bag. He has been on Nutro for about eight weeks with no prior issues. I am going out to look in the garbage for the bag as we keep it in Tupperware, hoping I can find it and report the issues so no other dogs get sick - as this may end up being a recall!

My 11-year old Labrador mix has been eating Nutro Natural Choice Senior Large Breed Dog Food for about 5 years now. We selected this brand because at the time, it contained a considerable amount of glucosamine for healthy joints and it seemed like a healthy, higher end option for dry dog food. In November 2011, my very healthy dog began exhibiting signs of illness including muscle wasting in his rear legs, reverse sneezing and coughing and an overall feeling of sickness. I took him to the vet, who took bloodwork and prescribed anti-inflammatory. The vet could not figure out why this sudden change in my dog, so I continued with the Nutro large breed senior food.

Since then, I have continued to watch my dog's health deteriorate: increased muscle wasting in his rear legs, runny nose, coughing/gagging, reverse sneezing and he has increased (almost insatiable) thirst, excessive panting (although we live in an air conditioned house), restlessness and again, this overall look of being unwell. After our recent vet visit, it turns out that his liver enzymes are really high and his cholesterol is now double the maximum range that it's supposed to be (high average is 328, while his is 643!). My new holistic vet suggested that I take him off this food immediately.

Nutro dog food is the only thing in his life that could make him this ill. We live in a green household and do not use pesticides in our yard. I will never buy Nutro's poison again! I called the FDA and left a message. I encourage all of you reading and posting to do the same. Our dog's lives depend on it.

Then on 6/18, the diarrhea was back. Now on 6/19, my 28 lb. Springer (who has a stomach of steel) started with very loose stools. Our pet food store has had no complaints, but is starting a list. I called our vet a couple of days later because at this point our dog was having accidents in the house which she has never done. I was mixing rice a chicken with the dog food and realized I was supposed to omit the dog food all together. Saturday morning, June 9th, I woke up to four piles in my house. I called the vet and got her in immediately. The fecal test came back negative but we had to put her on two different medications and give her fiber dog food from the vet. Since then she has gotten better. I called Petsmart where we purchased the dog food and they have got no recall reports from Nutro. Because we put our dog food into a plastic container, I don't have the bag and Petsmart won't return the food. I am going to stop purchasing this brand of food after reading all the similar stories with this dog food. Obviously, they are not pulling their product off the shelves and don't care about the customers' well being.

Katie has been eating Dry Nutro Lite for about 2 years now. I took my 9-year-old German shepherd to the vet 3 weeks ago after having 4 bouts of explosive diarrhea. All the years she has been house broken, she was constantly having horrific diarrhea in the house. I took her to the vet where they sent out a fecal sample, gave her an injection to reduce the diarrhea, an antispasmodic as well as an antibiotic. That visit was almost $300. Thankfully, the stool came back negative. I was told to keep her on a very bland diet of rice and boiled meat and of course water which is what I did. After a week and a half of the rice diet, I started to reincorporate some of her Dry Nutro Lite food as well. Doing so, she still is not getting any better 3 weeks later. I now have an appointment for this Saturday for blood work. I’m starting to think this is from the Nutro Lite. It was a new unopened bag she had when she originally started to become ill. I will keep everyone updated.

Nutro rep Katy called me back to say the sample looked and smelled fine. I asked her what the test results showed, and she advised that Nutro would do no further laboratory tests as sample was from an opened bag and could have been contaminated somewhere other than factory or in transit. I told her she should have told me that as, well, sense of sight and sense of smell are not all that scientific or revealing! If any of you have sent samples to an independent lab, please post your findings. It does not sound like Nutro plans to voluntarily recall these products, even though they are obviously making many pets sick.

Two weeks ago, I bought a new bag of Nutro Natural Choice lamb and rice formula for my two dogs. This past Monday, we had to put our 11-year-old down due to a severe blockage and hepatitis of the liver. All the symptoms were as described here by other consumers, and I received the same response from the company. The company even told me they would not test the food because the bag was opened but that they wanted a sample of the food to conduct a "visual inspection". What a joke. Two days ago, I finally realized that the food was probably the reason. So I stopped giving it to my other dog, which was one and a half year old; and his symptoms got better within a day. Unfortunately, the 11-year-old did not have the immune system to fight whatever was in the food. Simba's death is so sad, because it could have been prevented. It is obvious the company is not going to do anything about this problem, and it's very frustrating. Do not buy this food, as I am 100% positive the Natural Choice dog food killed Simba.

Then back on the Nutro, urinary problems, vomiting yellow bile and explosive bloody diarrhea. Vets have no clue, also had weakness in back legs, labs done when she was rushed to the vet and died. She showed very high liver damage and pancreatitis. Gee, I have heard that in so many reviews. I submitted the food and lab tests to FDA, that was in 2008. Unbelievable! I do think Mars company owns or has interest in PetSmart and their veterinary clinics. What a coincidence. This food poisons animals slowly and effects are different for some. At first, we didn't know the cause, but took him off Nutro completely to prepare homemade meals for him for other health reasons. Within several days, he was seizure-free and remained seizure-free for several weeks (no Nutro in diet). Not knowing the food could be the culprit, I fed him another bowl one day and, sure enough, he seized again. Back on homemade food for several weeks, no seizures. Then, still not making the connection that a dog food could cause him seizures, I fed him another bowl two days ago. He seized again. There's now no question that the Nutro Senior was to blame. I'll call the company and FDA, but expect no action. Just want to add my voice. I may have the food independently analyzed. If so, I will post results. I have contacted Nutro and will be contacting the FDA. I truly hope they quickly recall their food before more animals become so ill. My boy is normally a very strong, spunky, 120lbs dog. I hate to see him so listless so quickly. Before he ate the new bag of food last night, he had us laughing at his antics and quirky energy bursts. 4 hours later, he could not stop vomiting. He is still listless 24 hours later and is having difficulty walking, he won't eat and if he drinks, he vomits again. Thankfully, he only ate one bowl and vomited half up a couple of hours later. By this, I mean corgis don't have the least sensitive stomach or discretionary appetite. I noticed the food looked and smelled different in March. So to cut to the chase, he had intermittent bouts side March of vomiting, increased thirst, nausea and now finally diarrhea in the form of increased number of movements but all solid form.

As I tried this and that, I recently realized that the common denominator was this food every time! So I researched the reviews and it was oh not so pretty and oh so obvious! I took my corgi off this food two days ago and what a difference already! I do want to add that I contacted Nutro and have made arrangements to send a sample in from the latest bag. I first noticed my Cali sick first, as she eats the most - none were their perky social selves nor were they eating or drinking. They were throwing up, then started sneezing. I got her in right away thinking if it were just an upper respiratory, I didn't want anyone else getting it.

Then my boys started doing the same thing after I brought her home. So, back to the vets we go with them. Now these guys are showing signs of severe intestinal upset along with severe upper respiratory. They were treated for a bacterial and viral infection and sent home. Later that night, my one boy started panting, swallowing hard like he had a sore throat, then wheezing and breathing through his mouth. His face was so swollen he could hardly open his eyes. I rushed him in; they put him on oxygen, antibiotics and fluids right away and it was 3 days before he could even start to breath on his own. He is finally stable enough to come home, but by no means "out of the woods" yet.

My vet bill is outrageous! I have found information stating that these two bags of food were on a recall list back in 2009(!) and that all have been removed from stores and destroyed. Well then, how did I end up with them? I've been told by Nutro that none of their food had been on a recall list and there are no reports of any illness or death in cats or dogs for that matter.

Here, I see that is an obvious lie! I am gathering my information and going after their (bleeps). These are my babies and this should not have happened! Some idiot did not do their job! The other two are stronger and have recovered. We changed the food and 2 of the three dogs are fine. We have the poison food and the bag for evidence. Best before date is March 2013. Watch out!

I have an 8-year-old miniature shih tzu, I have had her since she was 6 weeks old. I recently changed her food because I decided I wanted to try all-natural for her to help her live longer. So I purchased Nutro Natural Choice. Two days and 1/2 cup later, she was bleeding when she went on her walks. She was throwing up constantly, and $300 later, the vet said she had a bacteria infection. When we first got her to the vet, she was so bad we thought we were going to have to put her down. We gave her the prescription food and almost instantly she was better. The vet said that after a week to go back to her other food - we did. A quarter of a cup later, we are back at the vet hoping to save her. My husband found this website. Something has to be done! Too many of our pets are suffering. What did they do? Why did they do it? I really hope all the animals and their owners can get through this! If you have not tried this product, please beware!

We have a beautiful 22-month- old blue merle collie. We decided to switch her food to Nutro Natural Choice Lamb and Rice and purchased a bag from Petco on Wednesday, April 18, 2012. We began the next day feeding her half of the Nutro and half her old food. We feed her two times a day, and by Saturday, the 21st, she would not eat her second meal. It's the same thing on Sunday. She had diarrhea on Sunday night. Then Monday morning, she refused her food and threw up 6 times and had diarrhea. We did not feed her and decided to let her tummy rest.

She refused her food again and still had diarrhea on Tuesday, so I called the vet. I took her in, and he suggested we fix her chicken and rice twice that day and begin with half dog food and half chicken and rice the next morning (Wednesday). By Wednesday afternoon, she was weak, lethargic, and drooling terribly. I rushed her back to the vet.

After blood work, X-rays, and exploratory surgery, we still don't know what was wrong. She was so sick that I did not think she would survive. She is home this afternoon and a little better, and after spending $800.00, we have no answers. Something made me google Nutro and sick dog, and I am very upset and saddened at everything I have read. She is still suffering and not interested in eating. I hope she will recover, but at this point, I am not sure. Please tell everyone to avoid Nutro food. I will never buy it again!

I had fed my dogs (golden retriever, pug, and boxer), Nutro Natural Choice several years ago and they looked great. Beautiful coats, great energy, small stools, and very little shedding. I was very happy with the food. I brought home a new bag and they started vomiting within 10 minutes of eating. I changed food immediately, and after several days they were fine. I contacted Nutro and got the same story that there were no other complaints. I worked for Nutro at that time in a Petco. I had received several complaints from customers and followed "company policy" and referred them to customer service. So, I knew there had been complaints. Within two weeks I was fired. Imagine that!

I decided to try Nutro again about 6 weeks ago (and I really don't know why). I put the dogs on Chicken Meal, Rice and Oatmeal Formula. Everything was fine. No problems. Second bag, the same - no problems. I brought home the third bag. OMG, vomitting began within 20 minutes. Three dogs vomiting everywhere. It would come up so fast, we seldom made it to the door. My 8-year-old pug went to bed and only got up to vomit. He did not eat for 6 days. My golden (who never had problems) was sick for 4 days. The boxer still has tummy problems.

I contacted Nutro, got the same spiel - no complaints, but they did send a bag for a sample. I gave them all the info and sent a sample. I have not heard a word back. I just finished cleaning all the carpet in the house (after spot cleaning vomit spots) and there was a white, greasy, foamy residue in the carpet cleaner tank. The smell was awful. I will never feed them Nutro product again. Please tell everyone that it may be fine for a while, but when a bad bag comes along, it is not worth it!

I have a miniature poodle pup who is eight months old. Last month, I bought a bag of Nutro Natural Choice Chicken, rice oatmeal formula for puppies. I noticed she would occasionally vomit undigested kibble but I actually thought she was vomiting because of another type of treat that we had given her. I stopped giving her the little treats but continued feeding her the Nutro. I noticed she seemed to be losing weight and didn't seem to like her food so I added chicken or other tidbits to entice her to eat.

Last week, she began vomiting after every meal. After a day of this, she also began to refuse even water. I took her to the vet where they took x-rays to see if she had a blockage and advised me to try and feed her a bland diet. That night after leaving the vet, she became extremely lethargic. She was trembling uncontrollably and appeared to be in pain. She also began vomiting a yellowish mucousy bile. She was unable to walk or even sit up. I didn't think she was going to make it through the night. I took her back the the vet the next day and am now awaiting the results of blood work.

I just thought I would go online to see if anyone else had any problems with this food and I am shocked and saddened by what I am hearing. My dog appears to have been poisoned and the only thing I can think of was this food. She is only 6 pounds and this has been an excruciating experience for our family to watch her suffer so. Tomorrow we will get the results of her tests back and I will tell my vet about my thoughts concerning Nutro brand dog food. I am hoping that she can recover. After not eating at all for the last 4 days, she did get up and drink and eat a small amount of food. I am throwing away the Nutro!

This website is incredible for consumers to share information about products but both the FDA and Nutro consider this site to be nothing more than a blog with no concerns of the posts. We do all still need to post here to keep each other aware but you must file formal complaints.

I have been in constant contact with the FDA after all 3 of my dogs died shortly after switching to this food and they say every time we speak to make sure all complaints are reported to FDA and Nutro. Please take the time to do so. This food will never be investigated unless everyone with a legitimate concern, whether you are positive it’s the food or not, you need to report the incidents.

I'm told every time I speak to Nutro which has been often that they have no other complaints and they don’t even look at this site as it’s just blogs. Please report all incidents and provide as much info to the FDA as possible. Never throw away a dog food bag. All three of them started vomiting undigested food several days after slowly changing their food to Nutro Grain Free for the adults and Nutro Puppy in the red bag. Yesterday, the adult dogs were so sick and the puppy had diarrhea in his crate when he got up yesterday. So we wound up piling them all in the car and rushing to the vet after I read this page. The vet said she can't rule out the food or perhaps some kind of parasite. Since they ate rice for dinner last night and have been on metronidazole and another prescription anti-diarrhea medicine, they are doing much better. They're playing and have that light back in their eyes again.

I find it impossible to understand why this problem has gone on so long without vets knowing about these problems. My puppy trainer hadn't heard about it either. How does this happen? Another page from 2009 shows an FDA probe on the deaths and illnesses related to Nutro. If this were our children, don't you think this would have been taken care of by now? These pets are our family. Someone needs to find out once and for all what is going on with Nutro. I can't positively blame the food, but they can't rule it out either and this is the only thing that is new in their lives. The only new thing is the food - coincidence? I don't think so.

On Sunday afternoon walk, I noted my 10 year old Labradoodle's soft yellow stools. We never had this before. By late March, he began throwing up large amounts of undigested food, making deep long sounds! It never happened before (only watery spit-ups after drinking too much, too fast). When it happened several days in a row, then on April 2 four or five times, I became very alarmed and decided to go online. I was shocked to see all the complaints about sick dogs. We immediately bought different brand. He has not been sick since! He is such a big dog that I think he withstood the poison better than a very small dog would! This food should be recalled. How many other dogs are sick with their owners having no idea it is the Nutro company killing their dog!

His small intestine, it was discovered $4000 later, was "eroding" and ulcerated. We still don't know if he will pull through. This is not a dog that spends time alone where he can get into trouble. It's virtually impossible that this could've been due to anything but this dry food. I'm so sick and angry. I started feeding my 6-year healthy dog, Nutro Rice and Lamb, then the next time, got a bag of the venison for sensitive stomachs and skin because I was noticing a decline in her appearance, skin coat, weight, and also noticed she was vomiting for a while. I did not take it that seriously at first, but wish to alert everyone that you should, as quickly as possible, take them off any food that seems to be irritating your dog or cat, or any animal for that matter. My dog's energy was beginning to get a bit sluggish too, but it was not that obvious at first that she was getting very ill.

Well, after about a week of the Nutro Venison diet, my dog started to have projectile vomiting, which I know was serious, so I took her to the Vet in Hilo, Hawaii. They took stomach x-rays which showed a bit of constipation, but not much else, so I insisted on them taking a picture of her throat because I just know it was some sort of obstruction and nothing was able to go down within 2 days of the onset. To the doctor's surprise, he told me my hunch was right on. She had a condition called Megaesophagus.

I personally feel that it was brought on by the bad food and continual irritation to her esophagus from regurgitating. Some dogs are born with it, but in this case, I know she was a fine healthy dog up until I started feeding her Nutro dry food products. I am going to alert my vet and my pet store, as well as Nutro. This is really sad for our pets to have to go through this, and then we may have to put them down because of bad food, and companies not taking any responsibility for this kind of horrible problem. I am into the vet for $240 already, and this will be an expensive road ahead if my dog lives through it. I am disabled and do not have insurance for my dog, nor the money to do much for her.

My best bet is to get her on a healthy soft sort of diet so she can regain her weight and stamina, and get the nutrition she needs. If anyone wants to contact me I can be reached via email. Thanks.

We have been feeding our two senior dogs Nutro pet food for the past 6 years. A little over a month ago, they began having stomach issues with diarrhea and vomiting. Our 9-year-old Swissy had intestinal surgery 7 years ago, so we thought it was just her issues acting up. Four weeks ago, our 11-year-old lab threw up blood in the middle of the night. We took her to the vet the next morning, and blood tests and x-rays were done. Everything looked normal, but she was put on antibiotics and sent home to follow a diet of chicken and rice.

Over the course of the next week, she deteriorated rapidly. She no longer wanted to eat or drink and we had to squirt water into her mouth with a syringe. By the time she went back to the vet, she was so weak and crying constantly. We couldn't stand seeing her in so much misery, and our vet said she very well could not survive exploratory surgery. We made the heartbreaking decision to put her down, but just before she received the injection, she passed on her own.

Not suspecting her food was the cause, we continued to feed it to our Swissy. She has been having daily diarrhea and stomach upset. We went to the vet yesterday and are awaiting blood work results. In the meantime, she has only been fed chicken and rice for the past 3 days and is showing improvement. I came across this site yesterday and am startled with the amount of incidents which are so similar to our experience. Nutro needs to be held accountable.

I've had many different pets for a very long time and they've always eaten Nutro products. Never, ever have I had a problem with their food and I've done my homework. As a matter of fact, I had an elderly dog develop severe food allergies and Natural Choice Venison and brown rice turned his whole life around. He went from having constant skin/ear infections to zero infection after starting this food. In the real world, your pet is going to get sick from time to time no matter what food they eat! Most of these posts are from folks that can't except that and have to blame it on something. Remember, your pet is not invincible and most of your blame game is a delusion.

Read the ingredients on a bag of Beneful or Alpo. Do you know where Animal Digest comes from? An unspecified animal, which means it could be that dead possum you passed on the road last month. You will not find this in a Nutro product. Nutro has over 300 quality checks per day at each of their facilities and they can trace every ingredient back to the farm, ranch or field it came from. All of the chicken in their products is from the USA, not China. Did you know that Blue Buffalo outsources to 5+ third party companies for its ingredients? That's right, they don't even make their own food.

Ask yourself, have I been with my dog every waking minute since he started eating Nutro? Is there a chance he may have been exposed to a cleaning solution, garbage can or pesticide/fertilizer on your yard? Maybe that's your culprit. If you don't think so, then quit complaining and have a food sample tested to prove your case before deterring others that want to feed their dog a perfectly healthy food!

Last week, my dog started vomiting mostly undigested dog food. I thought perhaps he was eating too quickly. Anyway, we went to the vet on Monday, did blood work and found nothing. You could hear his stomach growling all the time and he was acting slightly out of character; still playful, but really wanting attention like a little sick child.

The vet suggested that I cook a bland diet of homemade chicken and rice for 4 days. He did fine with that and no more vomiting. Well yesterday morning, I added just a cup of dog food back into the rice and he vomited within 30 minutes. Hello, it's the dog food! I immediately did a search on food recalls, found this website and called the vet this morning so they can check it out as well. I suppose I will call Ace hardware and tell them about the food (hopefully they will pull it) and the dog food company. I'm sorry to all of you that suffered loss.

I have been feeding my cats Nutro Natural Choice Indoor Healthy Weight formula for the past 5 weeks (approximately). In that time, both cats have developed diarrhea and vomiting. One of them developed ataxia and was acting strangely so I took her to an emergency vet. They performed blood tests and x-rays, but nothing indicated an internal source of the problem. At the emergency vet, my cat received antibiotics and she was fed another kibble. She returned home, and showed some improvement while remaining on the antibiotics.

But within 3 days, she was lethargic, non-responsive when I interacted with her, and would not move around very much because her legs appeared weak. She was still eating the Nutro cat food though, and her appetite seemed normal considering her other problems. I took her back to the vet, and they re-checked her blood work. Again, nothing seemed to indicate an internal problem. I decided to switch my cats to a different food, and they both have improved in their energy levels. The diarrhea is gone in both cats. Neither has vomited in 2 days, and the sicker one is back to acting normally.

I purchased the bags of food at PetCo in Emeryville, CA. One of the bags I can identify, but the other one was thrown away because I use an automatic feeder. Here is the information for the bag that I still have: Best By 11/20/12 (147B1VIC07 09:23 CAPF0024) The last part of that code may be "CAPFD0024" or "CAPFO0024", but the printing makes it difficult to make out clearly. I am concerned about other animals and pet owners who might experience unnecessary stress and illness. I have contacted the company directly. After reading about the history of recalls and other complaints here, I am mostly concerned with warning other pet lovers out there about this food. I think it was poisoning my fur babies, and I don't want others to go what we went through, or worse.

I was thinking it was a good and reputable food, but a new vet told me that ingredients can change without the labels reflecting that. Last time in Petsmart, they had a sale on a larger bag of Lamb and Rice for 20% more, so I bought it.

She no longer liked the food and sometimes would not eat it, even after going a few days without food. Her coat was less shiny, she was thirsty all the time, and slept a lot more than usual. And her breath was terrible. Not feeling good about what my vet said and realizing that Nutro was one of the brands recalled in 2007 and human food recalled due to China's ingredients added, I decided to change to a Canadian company that will not use China's cheap ingredients. So I mixed the foods using up the bag in two months. She loves the new brand. and her breath is much more tolerable.

This past weekend she was very sick, unhappy, and not herself. She would not eat the food, but she could eat hamburg and rice okay. Also, she had a very stiff neck and was in pain. One day after stopping this food, she was back to 100%.

This went on all night long until I finally just got up to keep an eye on my sick animals. I spent the rest of the morning tending to them and cleaning up puke. I took the treats back to the store. Thankfully, my sick dogs recovered within 48 hours. I am sure it was the Nutro treats because all my dogs got sick! Vet said no obstructions, no tumors but elevated liver enzymes. They were going to keep him over the weekend and see if he responded to antibiotics.

He died overnight. My family is devastated. He had an annual physical on 2/4 and was healthy. On 2/21, I bought a new bag of Nutro Large Breed lamb and rice. After a few days, he completely rejected the food. A black lab never rejects food. He would eat cut up chicken and other food but totally rejected this bag of Nutro.

I have no idea if the sudden liver failure and fast death was related to the dog food but I found it ironic that this site has similar stories and that my dog rejected the food. I then learned of another family in my neighborhood in CT who also lost a dog to sudden death this month. The dog also ate Nutro. About 5 days after the seizure, she started throwing up with diarrhea. It was so bad we brought her to the vet. We put her on chicken and rice for a week and started her back on her dry food gradually.

The day she started back, she vomited again for the first time since the chicken and rice. She did not vomit much, but over the next few days, she was throwing up a little more. The first day, she was given the Nutro dry food, only she refused to eat. This is very unlike our dog, she absolutely loves to eat. I thought maybe she was just spoiled from the homemade chicken rice dinners so eventually she did eat the dry food. That night (last night), she vomited all night and well into the next day. The vomit is filled with the whole pieces of food and yellow bile. Once again, she is lethargic and sick! But she is perfectly fine when she’s off the food. It takes about 24 hours for her to get the food out of her system and feel like her old self. This is awful to read all the other complaints and so many that are similar. This company should be shut down! They are killing our pets!

He would throw up every piece he ate. The last straw was when my boyfriend got home and my dog ran to the door and basically projectile vomited. As soon as that happened, I took him off this food and started feeding him chicken and rice for a week. It has been a month and he hasn't thrown up since. He's now on Costco brand dog food and is eating it just fine. Do not feed your dog this food if they are throwing it up!

I drove 3 hours to Washington State University Emergency Pet hospital. Thousands of dollars, and trying to figure out what caused this healthy dog to be in this state within a week, and no one suspected the dog food. she eats only dog food, no snacks or chew bones, and no table scraps. Warning to all using pet foods made by Nutro/Mars International owned pet food companies!

In February 2010, we almost lost our cats due to improperly prepared Nutro Max dry cat food. I contacted the company immediately and several times afterward. They were not interested in lot numbers, testing the food or any other action on their part. Then I discovered this site and all the complaints like mine, even though Nutro reps insisted they were not aware of any problems or complaints. They lied and almost cost my pets' lives!

We were lucky to have our pets survive, after spending over $2000, including hospitalization & IV therapy. Subsequent testing showed Nutro/Mars was using vitamin pre-mixes with either inadequate levels or toxic levels of ingredients. They should have changed their ways since it appears they were responsible for the deaths/illnesses of many pets. It's now February 2012 and our pets are thriving on pet foods made by other companies, not owned by Mars International.

But I see the complaints again about pets getting seriously ill or dying after eating Nutro pet foods. Beware! The FDA should investigate their productions issues, especially since they keep recurring over several years! Shame on both Nutro/Mars and the FDA for not making pet food production safety top priority! Politicians change the laws requiring pet food production safety! Our pets are our responsibility! Just because a pet food producer has big bucks, don't allow them to buy off the health of our pets.

My 13-year old, very healthy Beagle/Terrier mix had been eating Nutro "Natural Choice Lamb Meal & Rice Formula" dry food for about two years. I had bought the last bag (10% more FREE, 38.5lbs $49.99 at Theisen's) around the first of September 2011 when I began to notice a sudden drop in her weight within 4-7days of her eating it. My dog refused to eat the dog food (which is very, very unusual for a Beagle!) after around the 6th day and began throwing up bile/acidic liquid. I just thought it was something upsetting her stomach and expected her appetite to return the next day not even thinking it would be her dog food at all.

However, on the next day of her going without food, during the middle of the night, she let out a howl, began panting heavily, moaning approximately every half hour until about 7 am. I could tell she was in a lot of pain and couldn't get comfortable. But because it was in the middle of the night, I waited and planned on taking her to the vet that morning. My beloved dog was in pain, her stomach started bloating and that was when I knew she wasn't going to make it to the vet.

Our beloved dog died in our arms that morning at 7 am on September 15th, 2011. Since I didn't suspect the dog food and thought it was simply because she was an older dog that suddenly got ill, I gave the rest of the 38.5lb bag of dog food to my brother's dog. What I have to tell you will shock you as it did me. My brother's dog started showing signs of sudden starvation in just 1 week of feeding the dog food I had given him. His dog had the same symptoms, refusing to eat, throwing up, acting lethargic and coughing.

Luckily, he bought new dog food of a different brand, to which his dog ate within minutes without hesitation. I pray that he caught it more quickly than I did and that his dog will live without any side effects. I didn't get to be so lucky. I am sick to my stomach with the feeling that this trusted dog food "Nutro Natural Choice" I had given my beloved pet could possibly be the cause of her death. I never would have suspected this and I am outraged that this is kept quiet. I will be sending in the dog food samples to Nutro and the FDA.

Something must be done, people need to be warned so this doesn't continue to happen in the future. My brother just called me tonight, his dog didn't make it after all. This is not a coincidence folks. I will never buy Nutro Natural Choice again. I am so scared to think of all the family pets that are being fed this ** and dying. People, families need to know!

I have been feeding my dog this food for 7 years with great results. I purchased a bag in January 2012 and fed my dog as usual. Later that evening, he vomited. But I figured he got into something gross in the yard. For three days, he was lethargic and drank massive amounts of water and continued to vomit. I kept trying to get him to eat, but he would not. On day 4, I fed him some biscuits and turkey to see if he could eat, and he did. He became a little more like his self.

He still would not eat his food. I figured he was training me to feed him people food. He finally went 3 days without being sick, so I skipped the people food and put a bowl of Nutro out for him. He gobbled it down; I was elated. About 45 minutes later, he started gagging and puking again.

I decided to look up his food and found all of these recent complaints here on this site. I was appalled. I emailed Nutro, and they have asked me to call them directly. I gave them the link to this site and suggested they may need another recall. I am going to call them today and am returning the bag to Petco with a printout of all these complaints.

Thank goodness for this site, I feel for all of you who lost your pets.

I have fed my dogs the Chicken and Rice Nutro Max for the last 12+ years. I will no longer feed any dog I ever own any formula of Nutro Max!

I have a 3 year old female Siberian husky. In late November, we noticed she was extremely sensitive to us petting her. It was as though she didn't want to be in her own skin! Then in mid December, we noticed she was missing clumps of hair on her left side and had been chewing on herself. We took her to the vet and they said she suffering from inhalant allergies. They suggested we give her Benadryl 2-3 times a day. They seemed to think this would pass with the first frost of the season.

In the meantime, she ran out of food so I went and bought a bag (of what I thought was the food she had been eating for the last 3 years) of the Nutro Max formula she had been eating. I noticed the color of the bag was a little different but never thought that they changed their formula. I noticed instantly she was not interested in her food. I even tried putting canned food on the dry food to get her interested in eating. She was not interested in the food whatsoever! I also noticed she was drinking more than usual, but attributed that to the house being drier since the heat had been on.

During this period, the spots were getting bigger and she had an odor about herself that smelled as if she were rotting from the inside out. We took her back to the vet and they put her on an antibiotic and also gave her a shot containing steroids. The vet wanted us to continue with the Benadryl. She was on the antibiotic for a week. A few days after finishing the antibiotic the smell came back and the sores were getting worse. At this point, she started to attack the right side of her body.

Seeing that she was not getting better, I phoned the vet and they suggested we give her another round of the antibiotic along with the Benadryl as well a topical steroid to be applied twice a day for one week, then once a day for a week and lastly every other day for the last two weeks. I was curious what would happen if she ingested the steroid so I Google the question and lo and behold, I came across this website. Funny thing is I never typed anything about Nutro Max in my question.

I did ask the vet if they thought it was a food allergy and they didn't seem to think so. They said it would be very hard to pin point exactly what her allergy was. During the first couple of days being on the topical steroid, I decided to change her food. Let me tell you, she was interested again in eating! The sores all dried up and she has not had any outbreak of any new sores!

I strongly believe that Nutro Max has changed something in their dog food which has unfortunately caused death in some instances. I searched Nutro's website and could not find anything confirming they had indeed changed the formula for their dog food. It saddens me to hear of the people who lost their beloved pets all due to Nutro Max making changes.

My dog had lethargy, uncontrollable shaking, drinking excessive amounts of water and vomiting. It got so bad in a matter of 4 days that we had to go to an emergency facility. We did X-ray, an ultrasound and blood work. No masses and obstructions were found. Everything seemed normal.

I fed her chicken and rice for almost a week, then, gradually put her back on Nutro natural choice/light. She has only vomited once since, but is urinating excessively, very gassy and lethargic. My other dog, Staffordshire terrier mix, has developed horrible diarrhea within the last few days, and also has horrible gas and is drinking tons of water. What have I done to my poor babies? Wow! I have used Nutro for a few years and was pretty happy with how it was benefiting my dog’s nutritional needs. Started noticing changes in my 3 large breed dogs eating and behavior within last month or so. I'm very careful what I feed my dogs and keep diet very simple and never stray from it. Never give any other forms of treats, toys or food whatsoever. Not even chew bones except the hard Nyla Bones that can not be broken off into chunks or pieces. My dogs are inside with me all day and are only going outside for play and potty needs. First, it's cold and winter temps and they started drinking a ton of water having to fill up two very large water bowls several times daily like if it were summer and hot temps.

Second, they all 3 started sleeping all day long like they weren't feeling well and started not wanting to eat, sometimes leaving a full bowl the entire day only nibbling on it because they got so hungry. And finally there was awful gas beyond normal and some gagging but no vomiting that I noticed, but the feeling like they wanted too. One of my dogs, who is about a year old, was not as active/playful and became clingy and even felt feverish like he was ill. Used Large Breed Natural Choice and Senior switched to Max Large Breed and Senior.

Kibbles did seem to be different color and smell. Neither brand seemed appealing for my dogs to eat. Normally I would gradually switch dog food, but from these symptoms and others complaints I stopped using immediately and hope it was soon enough. After purchasing a completely different companies brand of dog food and putting it in my 3 dogs’ bowls, they could hardly even wait for me to put their meal down and devoured every last Kibble like they hadn't eaten a good meal for a while. Praying I caught this in time and no further illness is experienced. Very upset! Putting trust in a holistic dog food and it just might be harming your loved pets.

I bought a bag of the Nutro Natural Choice Dog Food Chicken Meal, Rice and Oat Formula on December 15, 2011. Prior to that my 3 dogs were eating Science Diet. Two of my precious sweet babies passed away this week, and the other little girl is in critical condition and was transported to L.S.U Veterinary School of Medicine in Baton Rouge to be put on dialysis because her kidneys are starting to shut down.

I will start with my oldest dog Daisey who passed away first. She was a Jack Russell Terrier, 10 years old, who also had been diagnosed with lupus a couple of years ago. She weighed 18 lb. Even though she had the lupus, she was otherwise fine until we started feeding her the Nutro dog food. We noticed that she was starting to act sick, vomiting and had a loss of appetite. We just assumed it was her lupus acting up. Within the last week, she got really sick. So my family and I decided to have her put to sleep. We had her remains cremated.

Then on Saturday night, 1/14/2012, Sophie our 4.5 year old Shih Tzu which weighs 11 lb started vomiting. The vomiting got so extreme that we ended up taking her to the vet hospital. Everything happened so quick. Then they got her stable, so we left her at the hospital and started to drive home. Then not but 15 minutes later, we received a call from our vet telling us to turn around and come back quick.

By the time, we had gotten there, they had already resuscitated her and were basically just keeping her alive, so we could say goodbye to her. She had started to bleed internally and her organs had shut down. So for precautionary measures, we went home to get our other little girl Riley to get her stomach pumped. The vet was thinking that something poisoned them.

The vet pumped her stomach, and we brought her home and watched her closely. On Sunday morning, 1/15/12, my husband woke up to let her out and feed her. Riley is a 17-month-old yellow Lab who is full of energy; she weighs 77 lb. But something was just not right with her yesterday morning. She was lethargic, and she was having trouble getting out of the bed. Finally, she got up; but still she was acting funny. We just knew something was not right. We called the vet to tell them we were bringing her back. She is now fighting for her life.

While we were at the hospital, a friend of ours started to do some online investigating about the new dog food that they had started eating. It was the only logical explanation. She discovered all of these consumer complaints with the same symptoms as our little girls.

Now looking back over the last month or so when the dogs started to eat the food, our dogs like many others were also drinking more water than usual, having frequent and uncontrolled urination, vomiting, loss of appetite, very clingy, and just really overall not acting like them. Since we had 3 dogs and one with lupus, we thought it was her vomiting in the house. Little did we know it was all three of them.

This is horrible for our family to lose 2 members of our family in a matter of a couple of days and to have one fighting to stay alive. We threw the bag the food came in away, but we got the pet store to reprint our receipt but they are unable to give us the lot number, because Nutro does not directly deliver to them.

The only logical answer is the dog food we gave the remaining dog food to L.S.U. where Riley is and they are going to take the contents of Sophie's stomach and have it all tested. We also purchased more of the Nutro dog food from the same store where we got ours and gave that to them to test. We are unable to do any testing on our Daisy cause we had her cremated before the other two started showing signs of being sick.

If it is the dog food which all signs so far point to, this company has got to be stopped. How can they still be in business with all of these complaints against them? My family has lots of questions, and we want answers.

I've been buying Nutro Sensitive Stomach for my rottie since March 2011. I really noticed a change in the last bag of food, as she wasn't eating it as much. She would eat the canned food that I placed on top, but would leave the dry Nutro in the bowl, resulting in me throwing it away. On occasions that she did eat it, she had the worst smell on her breath, and gas. The last time recently, she had eaten the whole bowl because I used chicken on the food mixed in, and then later she stunk (breath and gas) to high heaven. She had no problem eating just chicken the day before and the day after.

Then I run across this page. Yup, it has to be the food, you would think I would be smarter since the last go around with Nutro that resulted in me having to put my dog to sleep because of kidney failure (never was compensated, Nutro flaked on a settlement). But trust me, if your dog isn't eating it's not because they're not hungry. This will be the 2nd dog out of three that wouldn't touch the food unless altered.

We finally took him to the vet and received the following information and in one week, we have our dog back! The vet stated that Nutro has been causing these symptoms in many dogs. They are recommending that all their clients switch to different brands. There was crystallization in his urine. Thus, a urinary infection that was ongoing. Imbalance in his blood glucose. Pancreas was not working correctly due to the symptoms listed.

Solutions, these have worked! They put him on special diet that they suggested. The food had to be purchased through the vet as a prescription was required (this was to get him off of the food that was damaging his internals). Antibiotics are given 3 times a day with food (this is to fight off the urinary infections). Enzymes for his food (this is stabilizing his pancreas). Go take your animal to the vet if this has happened to your beloved family member!

We had to bring our 6 1/2 year old Yorkie/Shih Tzu/Bichon Friese into the emergency center on Jan. 1, 2012 due to severe vomiting, lethargy, depression and severe dehydration. We were surprised about the dehydration because our dog was drinking so much but he was vomiting more than he was drinking, like he couldn't drink enough. Temp normal, x-rays normal, bloodwork showed his blood was very sludgy so they kept him overnight and gave him fluids via IV.

I picked him up the next morning and had to bring him directly to his regular vet. They could not explain why he was so sick. They said they could do more tests but he was so miserable and weak. They said even if they did do the tests, they would not be sending us home with a healthy dog. We ultimately had to make a decision and one which no pet owner wants to make. We couldn't stand to see him in such distress and misery any longer. It all came on so sudden. Friday night, playful. Saturday night, bath and Sunday sick beyond belief. Monday, I had to have him put down. With the vet unable to give us any sort of explanation and me stumbling upon this website, I can not help but to believe that the Nutro brand of dog food led to our dog's most unfortunate demise.

I have fed her the same amount for 6-8 years or more! I have noticed a lot more hair loss in her clumps lately. It is winter and she doesn't usually lose hair in winter. I had been wondering about that until I read other complaints. She also has been vomiting bile more too.

After finding this site with all the complaints, I will throw out the remainder of the 40-pound bag of food and buy another brand. If I still had the bag itself, I would return it to Petsmart. I keep the food in a large Tupperware container. No bag to return. Someone needs to stop this company from harming our dogs! Thanks to this site, I see where the problem is. My search on Nutro.com also confirmed that the change in recommended feeding amounts means they are just out to sell twice as much food.

I purchased new bag of Nutro Natural Choice cat food in October and noticed a change in labeling and the look of the food. Both cats began to itch incessantly and one was even vomiting episodically. It took a while. And stumbling upon this page, I figure out it was the food (had cats fast for a few hours) due to probable recipe change causing allergic reaction. Both cats immediately stopped itching and are purring and content once again. I wish these companies would let us know when recipes change!

I have been feeding Nutro Grain Free Venison since it came out. It was the only food that stopped my dogs chronic loose stools. Then when we bought a new bag in October 2011. The food looked different, was lighter in color, smelled like cereal (instead of strong meaty odor) very hard kibble and my dog refused to eat it. He also had vomiting. I have never seen my dog refuse to eat anything. He even takes medication pills from my hand.

We were able to do a food test as we found a bag with the older style food and once again he ate enthusiastically without signs of illness. The next bag was the newer food and he would not eat it. Something has changed in the ingredients and I'll have to find another food for him. It is a shame as this was the only food that gave him normal stools after 4 years of vet testing, allergy testing, vet prescribed medication, fiber supplements, probiotics and trying various brands of dog food. I am so disappointed in your decision to change ingredients and not tell the public.

We didn't equate it to the food and next time we purchased his food they were sold out of the senior food so we got adult. No issues from any animals. Next time we went back to the senior formula and immediately noticed a return to bad bowel movements and vomiting. Our dog now tries to urinate but nothing keeps coming out. We switched to another brand and everything went back to normal.

It was because this all started a week ago when we bought a new bag. Luckily, at least I hope my dogs are okay. We didn't hesitate to switch brands after only a week of these problems. I decided to switch dog foods around the end of June or beginning of July 2011. My dog Lucy, an australian cattle mix - 34 lbs, 8 years, was eating a brand from Trader Joe's that she had been on for over a year, but she was starting to belch more frequently and I thought I would get something easy to digest. I was debating between Science Diet and Nutro Natural Choice. I went with the Nutro for sensitive stomachs.

I slowly incorporated the new food into her old for over a 7-day period. Everything seemed fine and the belching pretty much stopped with just an occasional burp once in awhile. I went through two five pound bags of the Nutro and I think my dog threw up once during that time which is not uncommon for her to do every now and then. On 8/2/11, I bought a 17-pound bag of the Nutro for sensitive stomachs and I began feeding her from the new bag 1 to 2 days later. Three days after, she vomited 7 times in one day. My vets office was already closed by the time I realized something was seriously wrong so I monitored her through the night. She had eaten grass in the afternoon and after she threw that up she stopped vomiting around 9pm. She had been drinking water but she stopped that to. She did not eat or drink all night but just lay in her bed looking pretty ill. I got her to the vet first thing the next morning so they could monitor her and get her hydrated. Tests were done including ones to check her liver, kidneys and also a digital radiograph to check for obstructions.

Nothing was found and I was told it was gastroenteritis which could be caused by a number of things. She was given electrolytes and a Pepcid shot and I took her home and fed her a bland diet of chicken and rice. I mentioned to the vet that I had recently changed her food about 4-5 weeks prior but she said my dog would have reacted sooner if it was the food. My dog began to recover and I called the vets a couple of days later to give an update. They said I could start to incorporate her regular food back into her diet. Over a 24-hour period, I incorporated a total of 1 cup of the Nutro Natural Choice in with the chicken and rice. My dog got sick again. This time it was diarrhea and lots of it.

She started having accidents in the apartment and having to go out more often. I knew then that it was her food. I stopped feeding the Nutro and called the vets. They told me it sounded like it was her food and recommended I feed her some prescription food that was nutritionally balanced instead of just the chicken and rice and keep her on this diet for three weeks. She is now on Royal Canin Gastro Intestinal and she is doing much better. She is back to her old self. I don't know what is up with the Nutro but my dog clearly cannot eat it and I will never feed it to her again. After the three weeks are up I have not yet decided what I am going to feed my dog.

She vomited once and had pooped 4x in his room (once solid with trailing diarrhea and the other three diarrhea) .

She NEVER goes to the bathroom in his room and it was too early for her to go outside (she usually goes out around 8:30 am and it was only 7:00). I gave her some toddler chicken sticks thinking she must just be reacting adversely to the new dog food (she eats the toddler sticks as a snack often so she readily accepted them). I cut the amount of new food in her bowl in half, thinking that transitioning her into it slower would help. The following morning we woke to copious amounts of blood laden diarrhea throughout the kitchen (we took her out of my son's room that night) she was panting and in distress. I gave her 5 mg. of famotidine to ease her intestinal distress, then began a diet of boiled chicken in broth with rice and took away all traces of Nutra Max. Ruby is a healthy poodle, she is up to date on all shots, she is wormed monthly, and she eats science diet, but she will also eat eukanuba, and blue products without ever having any digestive issues between brand switches.

I think this product should be looked at very closely as I am now finding that many pets have had problems with it.

Our 3 dogs have become extremely sick just days after starting a new bag of Nutro Max dog food. Symptoms came on after the 3rd day of feeding this food. Our Doberman became sick first, had an episode of vomiting bile and immediately had horrible diarrhea. He also peed in the house two different times, which never happens. The diarrhea continued the next day and I schedule an immediate appointment with our vet because a lot of blood was present in the stool. The vet thought he might have ingested a foreign object that upset his gastrointestinal tract and he was given medication to help ease the vomiting and diarrhea.

Immediately when we got home, we found that our Papillon had vomited in the house and had diarrhea when we let her out. Later that night, the same happened with our Chow. The only thing that has changed is this new bag of dog food. Before the symptoms started showing in all three dogs, they all seemed to have a decreased appetite or rather that they seemed hungry but were uninterested in the Nutro. We just started them on Blue Buffalo, so hopefully the stomach problems will cease and no permanent damage has been done. So far, we have paid $157 for an office visit and medication and the white carpet in our home is destroyed from vomit, diarrhea, and urine.

He had it for dinner tonight and now he is throwing up again. After reading the complaints, I am convinced we have all experienced the same symptoms and it’s because Nutro is poisoning our pets. Ripley's weight gain is also probably because of the stress and irritation on his GI system when he was young.

This is to follow up on the complaint I submitted a month ago about Nutro Max Kitten food. A brief recap: My cat lost 2 pounds over a period of 4 months ( She had access to Nutro Max food for about 6 months). Her coat was dull and separated. During this time, she had 2 different blood laboratory tests and a full body scan done and all the results were normal. I finally took away the kitten food she was eating because I was suspicious it was causing her weight loss. I did this because all her tests were normal and I thought it was worth a try.

She has been off the Nutro Max for one month. I took her to the vet for a weight check and she has gained a half pound. Her coat looks a lot better as well. I intend to take her back in for another weight check in a month to be sure she is still gaining weight but I am convinced the Nutro Max food is the culprit.

Part of me wonders if this food has poor nutritional value or if there is something else wrong with the food. I'm saving the food as well as the bag it came in. I'm not sure if I will look into getting the food tested but I want to have the option. I know I will never again feed this food to any of my animals.

My 4-year old Bengal cat started to lose weight about 4 months ago. I took her into the vet in November of 2010. She had lost half a pound from the previous year. My vet said she looked good and recommended I bring her back to weigh her in another month.

I brought her back in in December and she had lost another half pound. My vet said, she still looked good but suggested I do blood work on her just to be safe. It came back fine. She was a husky girl before the weight loss and I admit by this point, she did look good. She was trim but I knew that was not her normal body type. I then brought her back in the beginning of March because I thought she looked even thinner. She had lost another pound. She has now lost two pounds since last November. At this point the vet thought it warranted further tests.

He did her blood work again, which was normal. He did the virus checks, which were normal. He suggested I do a full body scan which would check for tumors or organ problems that may not show up in blood work. That all came back ok. I have now spent over $850 and all her tests are ok. But she is still losing weight. I started to wonder if this could be due to the kitten food that she has had access to since October of 2010. I have always fed my cats Eukanuba but I got a new kitten last summer and he was being fed Nutro Max Cat kitten food. I chose to keep him on it until I switched him over to the adult Eukanuba that my other cat eats.

Starting in the fall, she would occasionally sneak bites of the kitten food. Then I slowly allowed her to eat it if she was around when I fed the kitten. It got to the point last month whenever I fed the kitten she would come to eat too. I let her eat it because she had been losing weight and I did not want to refuse her food. Since the fall, she has been progressively been eating more and more of the kitten food and has been continuing to lose weight.

I did some research on the internet and came across all the information regarding Nutro and I am very concerned. I took away the kitten food last week. I'm going to take her back to the vet in a few weeks and hope she starts to gain weight again. Not sure yet if Nutro is the culprit yet, but I am very suspicious and will post in a few weeks if she has started to gain weight again.

After feeding my cat Nutro Natural Choice dry food for over 2 years, our recent purchase in December 2010 resulted in visit to the vet after noticing she was straining to urinate. I did see a droplet of blood at one point and her urine was very dark. Her urine had a pH of 8 when it should have been zero. I had her on a canned food diet but gave her small amounts of the dry Nutro brand after she was urinating normally.

The problem started up immediately (after just one feeding) so I stopped with the dry food. I have another brand that I gave her another time and didn't notice a problem but felt I should keep her off the dry food completely for a while longer. Then, just yesterday, I put some Nutro dry food in her dish and after eating only half of it, her urine is very concentrated. I found droplets on the floor and had to clean her up (she's a Himalayan). A google search led me to this site and I'm appalled by the numerous and most recent complaints and issues. I have called my vet and passed on this link so they can be aware of the problems and that it might save a pet's life.
