I have been feeding my 4 and a half year old male the Nutro venison limited ingredient diet food for over 3 years now. He is the most beautiful, healthy happy boy I’ve ever owned. In December I adopted from my local SPCA. Both are Staffordshire Terrier mixes. I have been following these reports on Nutro and have been hearing about the deaths and sicknesses of dogs for a few months now. I have also heard but cannot confirm that they sold the company and are now owned by an entity in China. I have been watching my dogs like hawks. No problems to report, until I purchased a bag of this food 4 days ago at my local PetSmart.
Day one: my happy go lucky female is not walking around with a smile on her face, and a constant tail wag. When she is engaging in play, it is way too aggressive. She is grazing on my grass like she is a cow, nonstop. I had to fill my water bowl twice as much as normal, with less play in the day. Both of my dogs were ready to go to sleep way too early, without much exercise. I fed them at 4:30 in the afternoon and woke up at 1:30 in the morning to my female heaving up her whole meal on my bed, along with an equal amount of grass. Day two: feed at 6:30 one cup. Same thing as the day before but worse! The grass eating, the aggressiveness, the lethargy... the throwing up her meals.
I took her to the vet on Day 3 and he recommends not feeding her the rest of the day and going to get new food, fish and potato formula if they will eat it. I told him my concerns about reading all of these recent awful reports, literally getting into the thousands. He told me, "The media blows these things out of proportion." Don’t believe that! There is something going on! I fed her a very light meal of the Nutro and kept an eye on her. Day 4: a small meal of homemade chicken breast and white rice that I prepared. While I was making it, my dog threw up whatever was remaining of her small meal and some grass she ate last night and this morning. Completely different dog after she ate. She was asking for her normal walk, easy going but energetic. She is not tormenting my male. She has natural tail wag about her. I don’t know what is going on, but I beg of you to believe these stories you are reading. I believe it 100%.
My vet told me to reset their stomachs. Skip a meal and then feed them plain old chicken breast and white rice for a meal or two, not raw chicken breast. That is a whole another thing, and you have to have to research it before deciding if it is right for your dog. I found a brand called Wellness. It is about the same price. The salmon and potato formula is limited ingredient and it is made in the USA. Research what you need to, and introduce new food slowly with the chicken and rice. But do not hesitate in making the decision to change their food. Dogs are dying!

Our dog has never had any health concerns until we started using Nutro. Early last year was the 1st scare. Within weeks of starting the food, Nala, our dog, began shaking uncontrollably, vomiting bile, started going to the bathroom uncontrollably in the house, was extremely lethargic and refused to eat. Blood panel from the vet showed her liver enzymes were through the roof (20x what they should be!). $2,000 in vet bills/test gave us no answers. We could only assume it was her food. We immediately threw everything out. Luckily, after 2 months of administering 2 different antibiotics, nausea medication and liver pills, our dog appeared to make a full recovery.
Until now, just over a year later, I made a huge mistake and purchased Nutro brand again. Within 1 week all of the same symptoms are back! I have immediately thrown everything out today (both dry food and wet food). I went online and found hundreds of recent complaints of similar issues/symptoms from many other pet owners & no recalls? In many cases, pets have died. Something in their products is extremely harmful to our pets! I will never buy Nutro or their other partner products again.

A few months ago, I switched my 7-year-old Black Lab's food to Nutro Max Lamb and Rice Formula. He began having bile vomiting episodes, especially after just waking up after a nap or after a night's sleep. I did not connect this sickness to his food as he seemed hungry at each feeding time. Over the past few weeks, not only has his vomiting continued, but he seems to have become weak in his back legs. Sometimes he loses his balance on a perfectly level surface. His energy level had dropped so much that I finally took him to the vet. After $280 worth of tests, the vet could only come to the conclusion that perhaps my dog had a virus of some sort, or a very sensitive stomach.
I noticed a pet food recall today, for a different product, and this led me to investigate my own dog's brand, which immediately led me to this site. I can't believe there has been no recall, and I am so grateful to these other people who have put this information out. I will immediately switch to another food tomorrow and hope to see his symptoms clear up. It is very frustrating to have no accountability by that vendor nor the pet stores that sell the brand.

On October 14, 2012, we were unexpectedly forced to buy Nutro's New & Improved Formula Lamb and Rice for our approximately 4-year-old Wheaten and our 11-month-old Welsh Terrier. We had fed the "old" formula, Lamb & Rice to our dogs for 13 years. The Welsh Terrier ate this adult food because the old formula was the only food he really liked, so the vet said that it was fine to feed him this, but we'd watch his development and make sure everything was fine.
One week later, the Welshie became suddenly aggressive - he also began having diarrhea and vomited bile (just like the other dogs on this page). Initially I begged for thyroid tests, but the vets I asked indicated that my dog was too young. Long story short, after a month of searching for the reason, we took him off the Nutro and he was immediately better than he had been, but not 100%. Our Wheaten had also become much more confident. He was a super timid mill dog who suddenly became bold and confrontational. It was odd behavior for both dogs but both calmed somewhat with the change to a new food.
After five months of aggressiveness and several bites, our Welsh was finally tested for hypothyroidism. He had lower T4 levels than the lowest senior-dog levels. Immediately he was put on thyroid medication and became better. We are still adjusting dosage, but he has improved drastically.
I am not saying that Nutro caused this, but I am saying that diarrhea and vomiting can be a symptom of low thyroid function. I am saying that my previously cuddly, non-guarding, non-aggressive 11-month-old Welsh terrier began acting out this way one week after eating the Nutro New & Improved formula. I am saying that the change was so sudden. Our Welshie had no other symptoms of low thyroid for the entire five months, except for a squinty left eye (which we now know is a symptom).

Our 9 1/2 year old lab, Libby, has been eating Nutro Pet Foods all of her life as was strongly recommended by her breeder. I have always boasted about the quality of the Nutro Pet Foods products and how healthy Libby has been all her life. But recently, for the past 4 weeks, our dog has thrown up her Nutro dog food which has totally surprised us. We thought it might be the fresh apple pieces not agreeing with her or an occasional chopped vegetable or egg upsetting her stomach. But today, I just read more stories than I ever wanted to about loyal Nutro dog food users, who have not only lost their beloved dogs in the past few weeks to the supposedly newly formulated Nutro dog food, but also about many who have been able to identify the culprit of their dog's sickness as the Nutro dog food.
Today our family will make a trip to the pet store to return our second bag of Nutro Natural Choice Adult. The first bag we returned was the senior formula, which we thought was the cause of her violent reaction, so we put Libby back on the regular adult formula she was used to. How sad that I read that Nutro Pet Foods was sold to a Chinese group and yet is still produced in the US, probably so it can be labeled as a US product even though the formula was obviously changed.
Shame on the lack of information and warning to all of us longtime Nutro Pet Foods users about their formula changes as our dogs have no choice but to eat what we give them. Had I not jumped on our breeder's Facebook page today, we wouldn't have known the reason for Libby's misery. Hopefully, she will rebound to her healthy and happy self with a different dog food product.

Roughly one month ago, a year after being on Nutro Senior food and literally the day after opening a new bag of Nutro Senior dog food, my otherwise healthy 10-1/2-year-old dog became deathly ill, throwing up and diarrhea with blood. He was hospitalized and put on IV fluids, lots of medications including antibiotics. After 8 days of prescription dog food, and stabilized condition, the vet said okay, to start mixing his own food (Nutro Senior) back in. Several days later, he was horribly sick again. He was hospitalized, back on IV fluids and back on prescription food. He has been off Nutro food and is getting stable again.
Now, it is my belief that Nutro Senior dog food was poisoning him. Because of other family sickness, I've only just now had a chance to research and found this page. My God, Nutro, why aren't you listening? My beloved dog almost died! Additionally, there were $2000 in vet costs. Wake up! Test your food! Get it off the shelves!

We just lost our beloved Lab this past week. I hadn't given it much thought, other than we were completely stunned that he passed and the way he passed, until I was at the pet store and a gentleman was telling the story of his dog which he could have just been telling my dog of what happened to my dog this week. Three months ago, I switched to Nutro to feed our Lab and our new puppy. I was looking for something healthy and to help cut down on the gas and bad breath my lab was experiencing. The Nutro rep sold me on his product. My lab ate it fine the first few days, but then started not eating very well. We were having to put something in it or mix it with puppy food to get him to actually eat. Until Tuesday, he wouldn't eat at all. The Wednesday, he began to act very sick. He wouldn't eat, wouldn't move and was vomiting.
When we took him to the vet, they said his spleen had ruptured. When they x-rayed him, they said he was full of masses, that they couldn't say for sure but looked like they could be cancer. Our beloved dog died that day. This was the exact story that this man was telling at the pet store with the exact result. The only connection we had? We both were feeding our dogs the same dog food! I want to wear a billboard and stand in the aisle of these stores that are still selling this food and scream at people to put it back and buy something else. My children and I are devastated that our family member has died. This could have potentially been avoided.

Papillon, 8-year-old male, had eaten Nutro for most of his life. The new bag is best by January 7, 2014. Two days after starting this bag, yellow stools, weak rear end, no energy, refused to eat and vomiting yellow bile. We switched his food to a fish and vegetable from a local manufacturer. In 2 days, stools are normal, and strength and energy are slowly returning. Shame on you Nutro! Like the other reviewers, this was an active healthy dog who had just been into the vet and had blood work and physical before starting the new bag of Nutro.

Our dog has eaten Nutro for many years. But after feeding him the newer packaged and reformulated Nutro Natural Choice for seniors, he began having runny stools, vomiting yellow bile, weakened back legs, was very lethargic and refused to eat any more Nutro. Just a week before, he was at the vet for a regular checkup and had a perfect blood panel test. Since then he's been to the vet. We've switched foods and he seems better but still has problems with runny stool. I hope there's no permanent damage. What is wrong with the new Nutro formula? Why aren't they recalling it?

I can't say it was the Nutro but the timing is suspect and, in my mind, it was the food that ultimately killed my beloved Solomon. I hadn't heard any of the complaints about Nutro and when they changed the formula, I was none the wise about not purchasing as my dog has used this brand from day one of his life. He had gotten a bill of health two week prior and a week later, the diarrhea started. Immediately, I took my boy back to the vet. He did some tests and all was clear. He just said to feed him white rice and chicken, gave him some meds and sent us on our way, still to no avail.
We went through two months of different regimens to clear him up. At this point, the diarrhea is now like a stream of dirty water and he began to lose weight rapidly. He went from 140 lbs to 83 lbs in a week. I took him through emergency after a few days and X-rays and the whole search began. His stomach and bile were filled with masses. He was 8 years of age and a Rottweiler which has a much longer life expectancy. He never had any health issues, took all of his vitamins and got teeth cleaned regularly and was as healthy as ever. But after the witch in the food, he was dead in less than 2 months.
Nutro, please admit your fault so people will not be at home curled up in a bed like me missing their beloved creature. Solomon, you left us too soon. Rest in peace and without the pain of bloody and vile diarrhea for weeks on end. I loved you and love you forever.

Our dog had been eating Nutro Ultra for a couple of years. But he began constantly eating grass or twigs, throwing up yellowish vomit, using the bathroom in our house when he has been trained to go outside for almost 8 years, and then began having issues with his back legs - dragging one like he was hurt, etc. I came onto this site and read other reviews about the same type of things happening to others. I changed his dog food immediately and the issues have since stopped. Something is definitely wrong with this food, and Nutro should recall it!

My dogs have been fed Nutro Ultra and Nutro Natural Choice for a couple years now. Up until about a year ago, we were using Nutro Ultra exclusively but due to finances had to downgrade to a cheaper food. Recently, we decided to put them back on Nutro and went for the Natural Choice purchased ~3 weeks ago. Initially, the dogs started vomiting a couple times the first two weeks and I figured their bodies were adjusting to the change in food. This has since gone to daily vomiting of yellow bile foam and our oldest dog had severe issues this morning with vomiting, heavy breathing and she could barely move, basically what many other previous reviewers stated happened to their pups.
I was absolutely shocked to find this site and a number of other reviews whose dogs ran into the same symptoms and even some that lead to death. I immediately called home and said to pull the food and we will do chicken and rice for a bit until the dogs start feeling better and we can find a suitable replacement food. Complaints are going to FDA and to Nutro directly. This food should have been recalled months ago.

I visited a pet store chain to find a Healthy Choice for my 2 senior overweight dogs. The sales assistant recommended Nutro over Blue Longevity Mature. She even gave me a few manufacturer coupons. That sold me. In a few days, my dogs were vomiting yellow bile about once a day. The more senior, who has arthritis in back legs, became weak and couldn't support herself on her back legs. The other dog quit eating. After a week or so of this, I did some online research and found these complaints where just some of the few pet owners were experiencing with their pets on Nutro. I stopped the food immediately and bought the Blue brand.
Within 3 days, the bile vomiting has stopped and the most senior dog can now almost completely support herself on her back legs again. Just an occasional fall. I don't know what the connection is, but it is obvious. I revisited the pet store and asked if there were any complaints and I was told there weren't. They did not refund the open bag of dog food. I guess I understand, since it was opened. I really hope Nutro is reading and hearing these complaints and acting on them.

We bought our Cane Corso puppy 4 months ago and agreed to keep her on the same food the breeders had her on, which was Nutro brand dog food. Her first vet visit with us revealed a urinary tract infection and slightly loose bowels. We thought it was just due to the change from the breeders to our home. I actually changed her food to Nature's Balance for a short time because I could not find the large breed puppy. Her bowels became normal. About a month and a half ago, I slowly changed her to Nutro Max. I began to notice her bowels were becoming loose, she would dry heave and had a dry cough. My vet drew labs and said it must be allergies.
As the days passed, she became worse - whining all the time, urinating on the floor (she is housebroke) and finally began to have bowel movements that were horribly loose (I have pictures). She has been on several rounds of antibiotics, anti-diarrhea meds and is also on Prednisone. Our vet kept her overnight to see if he could figure out what is going on with her, but other than the food we really have no answers. I told him I was taking her off the Nutro Max and putting her on the Limited ingredient diet. Her bowels are not mud, but they are still very loose even though she is on the above meds. We have spent several hundred dollars trying to get my puppy well and have yet to succeed. I am going to change her food in the morning and will also let my vet know about this site.

I visited one of the main pet care stores to get information on a different dog food to feed to my two labs that are almost 7 years old. I wanted a better quality dog food and they suggested the Nutro Senior Large Breed. I first bought a small bag and then purchased a large bag. Both the dogs immediately had loose stools, but I blamed that on a new food. But then one dog vomited just about every other day, either whole food with yellow substance or just mucous with grass (because they both were eating a lot of grass since starting this food). I searched online and was outraged by all of the bad and scary reviews. I returned half of the large bag and they gave me money towards another brand. Now no more problems with their stools and no more vomiting. I will never trust Nutro again. Vomiting and their stools are normal.

On March 28, 2013, I asked my vet if there was a better way to give my dog (Maltese/Yorkie mix) his Pancrea Tab pills other than annoyingly shoving it down his throat. His assistant told me to use Greenie pill pockets, and that her two dogs loved them! After reading the directions, I halved the pockets, integrated a pill into each half, and fed them to my pet (he found it difficult to eat one large pocket). My dog gobbled them down with pleasure and wagged his tail in appreciation. On March 29, after his second Greenie serving, he began to belch loudly and did not eat his morning bowl of expensive prescription diet food. After his third serving and early in the morning of March 30, he vomited! Later in the morning before his breakfast, again he vomited his pill treat about ten minutes after ingestion.
The vet assistant told me to refrigerate the bag after opening. This makes sense given the volatility of the aromatic ingredients. The ingredients are: rehydrated duck, glycerin, ground peas, natural flavors, pea protein, vegetable oil, sodiumbisulfate, water, dried cultured skim milk, xanthan gum, smoke flavor, preserved with mixed tocopherols. Can one or a combination of these ingredients cause a GI tract revulsion? Is there a quality control dysfunction on the product lot (Best by 14Oct13 29 3 - 242A3KANV1 02:28)? Is this product okay for some pets but not others? The product is a clever concept, and I want it to work. I hope that the Nutro Company can investigate this problem before their smart idea for Greenies are recalled or discontinued? Does anyone have an alternative harmless treat method to administer pills to dogs? There are so many food items that one cannot give to pets!

Ollie is my rescued mix breed. He has always done well with the Nutro venison and whole brown rice and the venison potato grain free. For the last month or so, he has been experiencing allergy-like symptoms: very itchy skin, itchy ears, chewed his paws until he had sores, rubbing his face on everything (never did this before), and infections in his penile sheath. He recently started getting diarrhea, upset stomach, bloating, painful, lethargic, and weak hind legs. We just took him to the vet where they ran full bloodwork and took X-rays of his stomach plus ultrasound of his abdominal area. Everything came back good except 2 of his liver values. He’s so uncomfortable after he eats. He just groans and tries to stretch. Burping is a temporary relief. I know there is something wrong, but we can't figure out what. He's not had any problems until we purchased this last bag of venison and whole brown rice.
The bad part is I encouraged my mom to switch her dog to the venison and brown rice. After seeing this page, I called to tell her to stop feeding it to him until I can get answers. She said he's been refusing to eat it and after he eats, he lies around whining and crying and fidgets like he can't get comfortable. I wonder what his liver values look like.
I called Nutro to voice my concern and she proceeded to tell me that he's just sensitive to one of the ingredients. When I said we've already looked at that, we were mysteriously cut off. I have yet to call back because my temper may make things worse. I vowed to care for him when I adopted him. I'd hate to think I was the reason he was suffering. We are going back to the vet Tuesday for a recheck. I think more tests may be in order.

My older rescue bulldog always eats her food as soon as I put it in front of her. I had to go out of town for a week and purchased a new bag of Nutro venison and brown rice right before I left. When we first got Bella, she had skin infections, eye infections and double ear infections. She was severely underweight and as time went on, we realized she had food allergies. We ended up giving her the Nutro venison and brown rice and she was thriving on it! So when I got a phone call while I was away telling me she wouldn't eat, I thought she was maybe missing me and dismissed it. I got home and she still refused her food. Then I got an email from a friend telling me to read the reviews on Nutro. I threw out the new bag of food and replaced it with a lamb and rice Eukanuba. Problem solved! Nutro should really recall whatever they have left on the shelves!

I rescued an owner-surrendered 17-month old Labradoodle three weeks ago who came with a bag of Nutro large breed dog food. He came with his past health records and we even took him to our vet on day 2 where he received a clean bill of health. A few days later, Bentley became extremely itchy and irritated. He (and I) did not sleep for 2 nights due to his panting, pacing and constant itching. The following day, he did not finish his breakfast which is not at all like him. About an hour later, he started vomiting yellow/green foamy bile and had diarrhea that continued for 48 hours. He was very lethargic and his back legs went weak every once and a while too. How a dog could go from great to rock bottom in 48 hours was shocking and very scary.
Luckily, I remembered something a lady said to me about a possible food recall, so I stumbled across this website. Instantly, I knew it was his food. I took him to the vet again and they were so surprised that this was the same dog they saw the week prior. After a few hundred dollars and a cancelled trip for spring break, Bentley is now back to normal. He is healthy, happy and super active on his new food. So thankful we were able to catch this early. My heart goes out to those people whose pets suffered more and even passed away due to this company's negligence. It is time for the folks at Nutro to make a formal recall before this continues to happen.

My pug and lab have been eating Nutro Natural Choice lamb and rice meal for the last 10 years. 5 years ago we started mixing that with Nutro Natural Choice Senior. 4 weeks ago, I purchased my normal bag of each kind of dog food. The lab started throwing up yellow watery bile almost immediately. The pug started after a few days. Both dogs were very lethargic and didn't even get excited about mealtime like they used to. They also had diarrhea. I never suspected the food. After a week, the lab stopped eating her food. This has never happened. Normally, she devours all of her food and then finishes what is left of the pug's. She got very thin and her back legs started giving out on her when she got up from laying down or going downstairs.
I switched them to canned lamb and rice meal from Nutro mixed with some ground beef and brown rice. They started eating again and the vomiting was less. I tried just the Nutro canned food and the vomiting got worse. I then put them on a diet of home cooked food and the vomiting stopped. Still not believing that the food they have eaten for years could be hurting them, I started introducing small amounts of the dry food back into their diet. Immediately the vomiting and diarrhea started again. I took them off all the Nutro food and they haven't had any vomiting or diarrhea since. The back leg weakness has also almost disappeared. Both dogs are acting much more energetic and the lab has started gaining back the weight she lost.
Yesterday I started researching to see if the food was recalled and found hundreds of others who have had the same issues and dogs with the same symptoms after feeding them the Nutro food both dry and canned. Our dogs are with us constantly as we work out of the house. They only go outside for bathroom breaks in our fenced yard (which is covered in snow so they didn't eat anything outside or have any contact with insects). The only thing that can be wrong is the food. With so many people having the same issues, Nutro should do the right thing and pull the food from the shelves before more innocent animals are harmed.

It stunk up my house and I later noticed mold at the bottom of my dog's food bin, which had never happened before. My dog started eating less and less of the food and lost 13 pounds from November to February. He also had hind leg weakness and hair loss. I took him to the vet and was told that his blood panel showed highly elevated white blood cells and acute anemia. My dog had a seizure a few days later and was never able to get up again without assistance. We decided to put him down due to poor quality of life a week later.
We were devastated. The doctor thought he might have cancer, but we didn't want to put him through excessive testing. Now I wish we would have. In late December 2012, my dog, Brownie, exhibited lethargy and grumpiness when petting him. Then he began losing hair on his tail. We took him to our local vet who tested for endocrine problems. The results were normal. By this time, his tail and rear had no hair and his skin was bright red and the hair he had was coarse, which was not his normal coat. Our vet took a biopsy from his tail in mid-January. The result was orthohyperkeratosis with follicular atrophy; basically, it's a skin problem causing the hair to fall out. At this point, his skin was bright red all over with complete hair loss on the tail, and some on the neck, and rear.
The vet was still searching for an answer while I suspected his food. Brownie had been fed Nutro Adult Ultra formula for three years - with no problems. I came across this web site after googling Nutro and was shocked to read the stories contained within. I put him on cooked chicken and rice for a few days. He picked up a little. The second day, I changed his food and mixed it with chicken and rice. He picked up more, went outside and he was able to exercise a bit. I also gave him oatmeal and medicated baths every few days to soothe his red raw skin. I put him on vitamin and omega 3 supplements from Drs. Foster and Smith.
As of this writing, the skin is normal color (pink); the hair is growing back on his tail, and his coat has become less coarse. His energy level is coming back while he is not as he was before this happened. During this whole ordeal, he was extremely grumpy at being touched or having topical items put on him. His demeanor has begun to get better. I did let the store where I bought his food at know what had happened. They of course, defended Nutro as a family-owned, made in the USA company.

We looked up the food just out of curiosity and came across these comments and others on Consumer Reviews. We will no longer be feeding him this food and I will be contacting our vet, the pet store and the FDA tomorrow. I feel horrible for my dog and I hope the Nutro company has enough sense to pull the product and investigate!

My Golden Retriever has eaten the Ultra brand of Nutro exclusively for her entire 6 years of life. About 6 months ago, I purchased the lower-priced version of dry Nutro products. My dog broke out into hot spots under her collar and feet. After researching and believing that she was allergic, I went back to the more expensive Ultra version. My dog developed an ear infection. At age 6, she had done well at never having one. I believed it was a residual of the cheaper brand.
After many medications, ear drops and sedation to have a digital look at her ear drums, my very vital happy energetic dog can hardly get up. She loses her balance; she can't walk, and she has been peeing in the house. She is also licking constantly. Weeks later, she is now pooping in the house. This is all completely out of her personality. Since she was a pup, she has never gone to the bathroom in the house. We couldn't find anything wrong except that she is crashing healthwise. I have spent weeks researching allergies, dog food ratings, ear infections, seizures, etc., etc.
Today, I found your website. I am caught between furious and wanting to cry. I am a single mom. I have spent our bill and food money on vets' bills. I also have extended my Visa. The vets have cut their bills to help. This is the most ignorant thing I have come across. I will be looking at changing my food immediately. I can't believe there is a slow poison going on.

I was going to purchase another bag of Nutro Lamb and Rice for my three dogs at Petco until another dog owner told me to check out reviews online about dogs getting sick. He said he stopped buying it because of what he read. I was going to buy my bag and check out the reviews later but decided to read them before buying. I'm glad I did. Probably, within the last two months, I have a dog who is throwing up something that looks exactly like the bile described by other reviewers. I have been buying Nutro for the last 8 years or so and don't feel like doling out money for vet bills if I can avoid it (already spent $4k on one dog attacked by coyotes. Boston Terriers are tough little dogs!). I'm glad someone suggested I read the reviews.

We have been feeding our 1-year-old labradoodle Nutro Max large breed adult for the past 3 months. We have probably purchased 4 or 5 bags of large breed adult and before that, we had him on large breed puppy. Since my most recent purchase (March), our dog has lost his appetite for this food. He will eat it but not by choice. He will leave it in his bowl until he is absolutely starving. He used to devour his food. I have also noticed that he has been vomiting yellowish foamy liquid. I took him to the vet and they told me to give him a high-carb treat before he goes to bed to hold him over all night.
I didn't think it would be the food until just this morning, he wouldn't eat his food, and he went outside and was trying to vomit. My wife and I started investigating and saw all these posts about the recent lots of Nutro and how sick people's dogs are getting. I immediately took his food up and I will not feed it to him again. I feel so bad about making him eat this food. Poor thing was trying to tell me something. I plan on contacting Nutro and Petsense Inc, which is where I purchased this bag. There needs to be a recall put out now on this stuff!

I have been feeding Nutro Senior for a while now. Up until the last two months, everything seemed to be okay. Over the last two months he has developed symptoms such as vomiting yellow bile, occasional bloody stool, loose stool, itching and gnawing, lethargy, and problems with his back legs. Until today I didn't put two and two together. I feel guilty for feeding him what I thought was the best food on the market.
After reading what others have been experiencing with their loved pets as well, I am outraged. How could Nutro put my baby at risk like this? I have called PetSmart where I purchased this product and lodged a complaint there. I am also filing a complaint with the FDA. I attempted to call Nutro today, but it said their reps were in a meeting and to try to call back later. I pray we get the word out about this before others lose a pet to this product.

We have been feeding our 5-year-old English Bulldog Nutro Lamb and Rice formula for most of his life. He always had symptoms of allergies (licking his paws, etc.), but we always thought it was because he was a bulldog. This December 2012 he was rushed in for surgery because of stones in his urethra. His symptoms up to the surgery were mainly lethargy, loss of appetite and trouble urinating. After his surgery, he seemed more content than ever! He was on a special diet for a few weeks after and we were really happy with his recovery (we now believe that he was better because he was not eating Nutro). In January 2013, we put him back on the Nutro diet and noticed that he had loose stool. We really thought that this was just something from the surgery and did not think too much of it. He did lose weight and so we thought we would increase his feeding to an additional cup a day.
He just started to seem sad and did not have a lot of energy. His stool was still loose and we would just have to clean him every time he came in from doing his duty. He would vomit occasionally and started to drool more, but again we wrote that off to just being a bulldog. This weekend his stool turned runny (dark brown with what looked like tinges of blood), he started to vomit often (foamy) and had a very thick (almost elastic like) drool. We took him to our local vet Monday morning where he ran an upper GI x-rays to make sure that he did not eat anything. The tests at the end of the day were negative. The doctor put him on an IV for a few hours and we took him home that night.
The next day we took him back for more fluids and to discuss other directions. The doctor gave him Flagyl and a shot to help with the vomiting and ran him on an IV again, then sent him home for the night. Tuesday night while sitting with my beautiful baby bulldog in our office, I thought that I should maybe check into the food he is eating and sure enough I found this website. Thank you to all that have written and I am so sorry for all of the losses. I was angry, but yet happy (in a sense) to know that I now had a direction on treating Bodey. My husband and I sat with him until 11PM reassuring him that we were going to get him better tomorrow! We told him about all of his favorite things and that we would go swimming in the summer (he loved to float in a raft in our pool).
I woke up at 3AM to check on him and he had passed somewhere in between that time. I feel very confident that Nutro is the cause of Bodey's death. I have contacted the FDA with a report and am pleading that everyone that has experienced symptoms with this food to please do the same. We need to get this food recalled so there are no more deaths. Please share this with your family and friends so that they know what this product has done and is continuing to do! I will do all that I can to get this poison off the shelf for my beautiful baby Bodey!

Wow, I am appalled. I have been feeding Nutro to my dog since she was 2 (she is now 13 1/2). She is an Aussie/Doberman mix and has been nothing but the picture of perfect health her entire life. That is, until 3 years ago. She developed idiopathic seizures (idiopathic = the doctors are unable to determine why). There were tests upon tests and no known cause for them. So we sadly wrote it off as being an unfortunate, unexplainable age thing. Her seizures are violent, grand mal episodes. She was put on Keppra and thyroid medicine. Her thyroid was just a tad off but the doctor figured it wouldn't hurt as that can sometimes cause seizures. She never missed a dose of either.
However the seizures continued, on average every 4-6 weeks for 2 years. That was 2 years of sleepless nights as every time she would even flinch, I would wake up in a panic that she was having a seizure. Hers were so violent she would practically fly off the bed or into a wall almost like she were trying to escape the demon that was about to attack. So I would always be on edge ready to grab her and get her to a safe place for the episode. Then about a year ago, they started happening more frequently until 6 months ago when they became weekly. We increased meds; we even added Potassium Bromide. And yes, the Potassium has done quite a number on her hind legs. We needed to purchase a sling and help her walk more than just a few feet and she became a bit depressed. Who wouldn't when inexplicably, you can't walk or get up on your own? But it did seem to help space the seizures out a bit, not much but every bit helps.
I got a second dog a few months ago. She was inexplicably throwing up yellowish, foamy bile a couple times a week. She was basically a rescue at 1 1/2 years old so I wrote it off as her breed or a weak stomach. Then, I got the article about Nutro. It was enough for me to immediately stop feeding it to both of my dogs. In short, since removing her from Nutro, she has been seizure free and my newer dog has not thrown up once. Additionally, I have slowly been taking her off all of her seizure medications and still there are no negative effects or seizures.
Now, I am not sure of this information being true. I need to do some more research, but I was told by a couple of people that Nutro sold its brand to a company in China, coincidentally, only 6 months before my dog's seizures started. They still produce and package here thus being able to continue putting the American Flag on the product. I just wish I had this information years ago and been able to prevent my dog from going through such traumatic episodes as well as all of the sleep I've lost and visits back home to visit my family in the mid-west put on indefinite hold so I may be here to nurse my four-legged family member here.
Everyone I know who has heard my story, I have directed them to this site to decide for themselves. And every single one of them has thrown away their Nutro and moved on to another brand. Fingers crossed that my dog, as well as everyone else who has commented here and I'm sure the 100s if not 1000s of others who are unaware, that our loved ones heal and move forward to have healthy happy lives. They are too short to begin with. Why shorten them or make them unhappy by feeding them food that was sadly misleading? Here's wishing you on here the best. Big wags to all!

After he recovered, we switched to Natural Choice and the symptoms were gone. Two months later, he passed away. He passed away out of the blue, and we had no idea what caused it; but the issues started after this nightmare with Nutro Choice. I am not sure Nutro Choice food caused his death. He was the most joyful dog up to the day he died. I would never recommend this poison. Stay away from Nutro and hopefully, this food will be recalled so dogs won't get sick from it.

My dog has been fed Nutro Dry Dog Food Chicken Rice and Oatmeal for twelve years. He has had no illness, has a beautiful coat, etc. Until this year, I noticed that the brown rice formula was the only type available at Petco so I began buying that. Fortunately, I've only purchased three small bags since December. My dog has had all of the symptoms described: vomiting bile, lethargy, itching, sneezing, and trouble climbing with his back legs. We ran out of Nutro and for two days he was fed boiled chicken and rice. He became a new dog who was full of energy, no itching, no whining, no vomiting; and he even stands differently. I'm convinced Nutro was poisoning him. I chanced upon this site while researching the recent cat food recall. We switched to a new dog food and will never again purchase Nutro.

My dog wants nothing to do with Nutro. When we first switched his food over to Nutro in late 2012, he ate it up. Then he began to develop problems. Started puking randomly. As time went by, he didn't want to eat the Nutro food anymore. He still went crazy for snacks. He even started eating leaves and sticks, but nope. No Nutro food. So tonight my wife and I started investigating what was going on. We didn't have to go far. Google "Nutro complaints" and thousands of complaints sprung up from a ton of websites. We aren't alone. Same symptoms, same product. If you go to the Nutro Facebook page, you will also notice that they are blatantly calling our claims unsubstantiated rumors. Yes, that is the exact quote from their 24/7 manned Facebook page. They're copying and pasting the same "call us with your concerns" to the people wondering what's going on, but deleting the comments from those who are actually having the issues.

I have given my Mastiffs Nutro for the past 5 years. We only have a 3-year-old female Mastiff now. She has been vomiting for the past 3 weeks and whining constantly. We noticed she was still going for her treats can and would stand next to me while cooking, hoping something would drop. We knew she was hungry and wanted to eat. I tried cleaning her bowl, changing her bowl, took her to the vet (vet did mention food change or formula change in food could be the cause!) and did whatever I could for my poor girl. Every time I tried filling her bowl with the Nutro recently, she wants nothing to do with it. I tried another brand. She devoured it and kept it down and stopped whining! What happened?! What could they have possibly changed in the Nutro formula to make all these dogs so sick! Nutro is not cheap either! I did a gradual mix starting on Feb 11, 2013 with small amount of the New Nutro food with their Iams food. After about a week on the mixed food, one of our dogs would throw up every other day or so. They would vomit a yellowish liquid, bile-looking substance (some with chewed food in it and some without). I was feeding them twice a day and thought maybe they needed to be fed more often. So I went to feeding them 3 times a day. They continued throwing up almost everyday, so I switched them back to just Iams dry adult dog food (their original food) on Friday, March 15, 2013 and none of my dogs have thrown up since.
After reading all of the same experiences on here from the Nutro dog food having the same effects on lots of other families, I decided to contact the Nutro company, the PetSmart where I purchased the food and then filed a report online with the FDA. The Nutro company said this was the first they have heard of this and that all the stuff online was not accurate. PetSmart also said this was the first time they had heard about this, but seemed more concerned than Nutro. We stopped the new flavor and continued the old. She has continued with intermittent diarrhea and vomiting. She is also eating grass and drinking a lot of water. On a hunch we did some checking for recall information and came across these complaints. Good thing! We went to Petsmart and returned all the food we still had in bags. Our beautiful eight year old dog has eaten Nutro her whole life. However, since the first of the year, she has been excessively licking her paws, vomiting foam, and having seizures. After some research, I have discovered the exact same symptoms have been happening to other pets with a Nutro diet since they changed their formula. No one informed us that the formula changed, so we had no clue the food could be connected to our dog's symptoms! We then did more research, including speaking with several vets and pet store owners and have decided to feed our baby K-9 Caviar. It is a holistic dog food and is a bit more expensive, but you feed the pet less so really, it is a catch 22. If you compare the ingredients on both bags, it's night and day. Our dog has been on K-9 Caviar for 2 weeks now and hasn't had one seizure, vomiting, or licking episode. Coincidence? Needless to say, we are very upset we didn't switch her food early, and would have had we known about the formula change. Customers, be wary of Nutro! The website and bag sounds good, but their new formula has some chemicals in it making pets sick! Boo! There should be a recall immediately.

We switched our mini schnauzer over to Nutro to try to figure out if he had food allergies. Things had been going very well until the new formula Nutro Max came out. On Wednesday this week, we began to notice things were just not right with our boy. On Thursday morning, he began to vomit and continued to vomit all day. I had an appointment to take him to our vet on Thursday afternoon. It is a really good thing I was able to get the appointment because otherwise our boy might be dead now. All of his bloodwork was off the chart and the diagnosis was severe dehydration due to the vomiting and worst of all, pancreatitis. He had to stay at the vet hospital overnight and be given fluids and antibiotics as well as anti-nausea medicine. Twenty-four hours later, the bloodwork was back to completely normal. This was due to him not being given any of the Nutro food for 48 hours. We will not be going back on this formula. If I can find a way for this food to be tested, I will be pursuing this issue further. There should be recalls on this food with so many complaints being registered, not to mention the vet bill of $700, and we should receive compensation for this food making our babies sick.

I have 5 beautiful Pit bulls ranging in age from 8 years old to 10 months. For the past 3 months, I have fed my dogs Nutro Max Chicken and Rice (Adult, Large Breed Adult and Large Breed Puppy). They loved the taste of the food in the beginning but soon began licking their paws and vomiting. My eldest female was drinking an excessive amount of water and was wetting herself. She was lethargic, disoriented and her kidneys began to fail. All five of my dogs were obviously suffering and soon refused to eat. I was dumbfounded and could not understand what was happening to my family until I decided to investigate Nutro on the internet.
I was disgusted and angry that all of this could have been avoided by a simple recall on behalf of Nutro. I have looked at the ingredient list on all of the bags, and I do not see "green tea extract" for palatability but would be interested to know if they are still including this ingredient which is toxic to animals. I immediately contacted the FDA and visited my local PetSmart. The PetSmart manager refused to hear anything I had to say regarding Nutro and did not want to comment. I spoke to another employee and he casually told me the Nutro cat food had been recalled because of all the "deaths." This situation is ridiculous and something must be done. How many calls does the FDA need to shut down this multi-million dollar company?
On a brighter note, my family has begun to heal only days after changing their food. Thank you to everyone who has taken time out of their day to submit a complaint regarding Nutro Dog Food. I have been feeding Nutro brand dog food for the last 14 years. I fed it to my Golden Retriever who died at age 6 from brain tumors. I have fed it to my current Retriever for 8 years without any problems, until last year when I bought the new improved formula. I always bought the lamb and rice for sensitive stomachs for both dogs. Last year, I switched to the salmon/fish new improved formula one when I couldn't find the lamb one at Petco. My dog initially ate it, but then would not unless she waited a day and had nothing else to eat. I then switched back to the lamb and rice new and improved formula type when it was available.
She would not eat it unless told to and not offered anything else. I had noticed over the past few months that she had become very lethargic and was having trouble moving her back legs. She was having difficulty getting up and would not jump up on the deck or run anymore. She is 8 years old and the vet thought it was arthritis. I bought expensive Glucosamine supplements and that did not help her at all. I also remember on several occasions after eating that she would lie around and moan as if in pain.
I was notified of consumer complaints about Nutro through a Facebook post and the people were complaining about similar symptoms. I immediately stopped the Nutro food. I purchased Taste of the Wild grain free food for her. She ate it up instantly. Within three days of feeding the new food, she was perky and playful. It has only been 5 days, and she is running and playing in the yard. She runs and jumps up onto the deck like a pup again.
Nutro Company, there is something very wrong with that food! I was a loyal customer thinking I was feeding a quality good food. It was very expensive over all those years. The Taste of the Wild is expensive but I get 30 lbs for $50, and she only needs 2 cups per day. I will continue this new food since she is so happy and healthy from it. I am angry that there is so many problems reported and your company has not done a recall or followed up on this issue! You've lost my business, and I am spreading the word. I'm so angry that you have hurt my darling dog and hurt me because I feel I was poisoning her with your product!

I have fed all my dogs this brand and flavor for nearly a decade. We recently adopted two new adult dogs that were pregnant and now have a family of 4. The adults were given the Nutro Natural Choice Venison and Brown Rice dry kibbles as our previous dogs were. We've owned them for nearly 5 months now. Over the last two months, their condition, especially the female's, is deteriorating rapidly - heavy breathing, excessive shedding out of season, droopy eyes, excessive drinking, frequent and difficulty urinating, blood in urine, occasionally vomiting, red ears with little bumps all over their inner ears and bellies, particularly noticeable bumps in the mom and babies.
The vets were stumped as to the reason for their condition, unable to offer a remedy or solution. Until things progressed enough, they could locate the cause of the mysterious illness which matched almost exactly the details I received an email link about issues with Nutro food last week, indicating a large number of complaints, side effects similar to our dogs'. We immediately quit feeding the dogs Nutro. The pups only received the adult's kibbles occasionally and were not seriously affected by this long term. Our adult male had some high levels in his urine test but being young (only 3 1/2) and relatively healthy otherwise, the vets expect him to make a full recovery.
Our adult female has had the worst of it. She has a raging UTI and some liver poisoning. They hope with medication and new food for her to make a full recovery which remains to be seen. You think you're doing the best for your pets, buying food $70+ a bag, supposedly all natural; obviously, something in it is making all these dogs sick and it's been going on long enough. The company should have taken note and removed the bags from the shelves rather than leave them there to poison other dogs. In allowing tainted or unsafe food to remain on pet store shelves, Nutro has put making money ahead of the health and life of people's pets, which is despicable.
If ours had been on it longer, our female would have suffered a painful death within a few more months and we'd have no hope of her recovery. Our pet store is doing the right thing and pulling the food of their own volition. This suffering was unnecessary and inexcusable. If she doesn't make a full recovery and ends up passing as a result of eating this food, they'll be hearing from our solicitors and we'll go to whatever lengths necessary to keep our pets and others safe. Shame on you, Nutro. Shame on you.

Then my Jack Russell started getting sick also, including drooling and drinking tons of water. I immediately tossed the food and started Science Diet, and both dogs seem to recover quickly. I'm so upset.

I stated changing my Rottweiler over from his current food because where I am staying, it was very far to get the other food and Petco was close. I looked at the Blue Buffalo but it was very pricey so I decided on the NutroMax Beef and Rice. During the two-week change over, his stool was looser but I attributed that to the change of food. At the end of two weeks, I gave him the NutroMax without any mix. Within 2 days, I had a dog with bloody, watery diarrhea, and vomiting. I was going back home for the weekend so I fixed his food before leaving and he refused to eat. On the trip, we stopped at every rest area and he was the same. He just laid in the back of the car not real interested in anything. When we got home, I fed him some canned puppy food and he held it down.
I got a Facebook post from Oso's trainer about the Blue Buffalo and decided to look for any complaints about the NutroMax. After reading the complaints, I immediately changed him back to his original food and within a day, he was getting better and he is improving everyday. No more vomiting or bloody stool. I hate to think that I almost killed my dog. I will never make any changes to my dog food without first looking for consumer complaints before I make any changes, and will check on our regular food too - just to be safe.

Fortunately, I saw a post on Facebook from a friend about this situation happening to other people; I’m now piecing the puzzle together. We fed our previous Shepherd Mix this food since 1999, and he passed away with seizures and tumors last July 2012. Now, we are attributing this to the formula change after the company was bought out by Mars. I was a little concerned, reading that changes had been made in the formula, though my two never batted an eyelash over the change. I contacted the company to find out what the exact changes were. This is a copy of what was sent to me via email: Formula Additions - Whole Grain, Brown Rice, Spearmint Extract (for palatability), Decaffeinated Green Tea Extract (for palatability); Formula Deletions - Synthetic Vitamin K, Egg & Kelp, Rice Flour.
These changes all seem like good things. I suppose all dogs are different and some may respond differently to brown rice, as opposed to rice flour, as I guess it gives more fiber in the dog's diet. I like too that I don't have to worry about it being made in China. I suppose any company can have a recall. I am concerned about every aspect of my girl's health which for them I think this is the safest and best choice.

His eyes are swollen, he's itching his face, legs, feet, etc. The veterinarian said he is having food allergies. We switched his food up and 3 weeks later, he is finally starting to get better. Now I am reading all of these other customers that are unhappy as well and their dogs are having other serious issues. What are you putting in your dog food?! Someone should be accountable.

I cannot believe this is still ongoing. How many more animals will get sick and die before something is done about this food? My chocolate lab got sick with all these same symptoms back in 2008 when feeding Nutro. At that time it was thought there was too much copper and zinc in the food causing toxicity. This was per testing by an independent pet food safety alliance. Well needless to say, my dog was sickened while eating this food with many of the same symptoms and complaints - vomiting, lethargy, not wanting to eat his food, heavy panting, crying in pain while he was laying. Well he developed pancreatitis. 6 months later, diabetes from his pancreatitis shutting down. This was in 2008, when he was only 5 years old.
He has been diabetic for 4 years now and he has been blind for a year from the diabetes. He gets 2 insulin shots per day. I have spent thousands of dollars in hospitalizations, insulin, needles, blood work, etc. Even though I have pet health insurance, they will no longer cover anything due to the diabetes because it is not curable, but that is a different story all together. I have looked at these complaints every day since March of 2008 when my dog was sickened, and I cannot believe this is still happening. At that time, it was rumored the FDA was going to investigate, but that never happened.
I wish everyone luck with their pets that have been sickened and a safe recovery. I was fortunate that my dog did not die because I put 2+2 together that it was the food, but he has suffered so and certainly does not have a good quality of life. Of course, the thousands of dollars I have spent is not recoverable and is ongoing.

I have a five year old puggle. Approximately a month ago, we decided to supplement his high quality Nutrisca food (which is low carb/glycemic) with the Nutro Venison and Oatmeal. Due to the colder weather here, we thought he might need the additional carbs to help him keep warmer. I knew that it wasn't a high protein food, but it did say made in USA so I thought it would be okay as a supplement. I bought a small bag and gradually added it to his regular food. He liked it and despite his many allergies, he seemed fine eating it.
Then on Feb. 28th, he began the day with diarrhea. By that night, he was vomiting and had bloody diarrhea. He was the sickest I have ever seen him. By 6AM, his back legs literally collapsed. He was in terrible pain. I called the emergency clinic and they said to go to the vet at 8AM (we are in a very rural area). We took him to the vet and ran all blood work. No diseases, no parasites, no explanation for this sudden illness. Unlike others that have posted here, his blood work came back normal for kidneys, liver, pancreas, blood counts, etc.
However, after reading these posts, I believe it is the food that made him so sick. Nothing else had changed in his health/diet/environment. The only thing different was the addition of the Nutro. I can only be grateful that I added it in small amounts over a period of time. I think that is what kept him from becoming as sick as the other dogs. He is still very sick and on several medications. We are praying.

I am happy to report that my 2 Shih Tzu's are 100% recovered from their symptoms of vomiting bile, increased thirst, lethargy and unwillingness to eat the Nutro Natural Choice small breed chicken and rice weight management control "new formula" food. With the help of Pet Supplies Plus, I switched to Chicken Soup for the Dog Lover’s Soul. It only took 1 1/2 to get them back to eating, and "no" symptoms. I successfully submitted on 2/27/2013 4:25:30 PM EST to the FDA and urge everyone who's reading this to do the same for all the sick dogs and dogs who have passed from eating the "new formula" Nutro.

I have used Nutro Dry for at least 8 years, even recommending it to my son who had a husky that kept getting bladder crystals. This food actually agreed with this dog's ultra sensitive stomach and he has been crystal-free for over 4 years. Now, the problems. I have been feeding my 3 dogs a small amount of Nutro's canned food, mixed with the dry for about 2 years using the Ground Adult Beef. Lately, I started to alternate with the Nutro Chicken & Rice Dinner Home-style Senior. When I ran out of the beef, I purchased a case of the Chicken (PetsMart was out of the Beef Recipe). On 2/24/13, my oldest dog lost her appetite and then started watery stools that came on her about every 45 minutes. She is 12 1/2 years old. She was taken to the vet with a stool sample. It was found she had an extremely large amount of bacteria in her lower track and she was put on an antibiotic.
Two days later, my second dog started with the same symptoms (on 2/28). He has an appointment today. My third dog (who has a stomach of steel, he's a street dog rescue) started throwing up today (3/1). This dog, Ricky, had two evenings prior that he was shaking like he was cold, then panting, and laying on his bed like he had pulled a muscle. He had been running on the hardwoods that day and I saw him lose his balance and sway, so I thought that evening he had pulled something. I gave him a low dose of buffered aspirin and the symptoms disappeared. Now, I think this was not a pulled muscle but he was in pain probably due to a stomachache (my dogs eat late afternoon). When my second dog, Benny, started with the watery stools late yesterday, I put the puzzle together. The one thing they have in common is their food (snacks are different).
My dry food is almost depleted, so being as how they have eaten that for almost a month, it had to be the new case of the wet food. I will no longer give this food (even the dry) to my dogs and will be returning the case of wet to PetsMart. I have alerted my son about the dry, as the Husky's use the Ultra, but their little dog uses the Natural Choice Chicken & Rice. He has been to the vet and given meds for some type of recurring worm issue for months. He cycles with very loose stools, then gets better, then it returns. They have spent hundreds between visits and this expensive prescription, and still battle this. I have a strong feeling once my son removes Turbo from this dry formula and goes with another brand, his problem will stop. I will post again when Turbo's food is changed and if there are positive results. No longer will I use this food, wet or dry.

My three dogs all have eaten Ultra Adult dog food for the past year. On 17 February 2013 I opened a new bag of food and fed each dog. Two of them received 1 cup and the smallest got 1/2 cup of the dry kibble. The following evening, they all had slightly bloated stomachs, thin stool. And they were drinking a lot of water. Two of the dogs would not eat and the third only ate half of his allowance. By the following evening, they were very bloated; they had diarrhea and they refused to eat and had lost energy. I stopped the food and gave them rice and chicken in water, and the bloating has gone down, and the stool turned thin and is now normal. I bought a different line of food, and each day, the bloating is going down.

After taking my 14-year old Doxie in for her yearly checkup, the vet said she needed to lose a little weight. On Feb. 11, 2013, I went to my local PetCo store in Klamath Falls, OR. The Nutro pet rep. was there and suggested I should try Nutro Natural Choice Adult Lite Chicken & Rice. A few days later, I began adding a little of this food to my dog's normal food and each day after adding a little more. Around Feb. 19, 2013, she started showing small signs of being lethargic and walking off balance. By Feb. 22, she was very ill. I then took her off the Nutro. She was in extreme pain, painting, couldn't walk and quit eating and drinking. With a syringe, I began forcing water into her to keep her hydrated. On Mon., Feb. 25, 2013, I got her into her vet. First thing I told him was about the food change. He ran many tests and came to the conclusion she was suffering from gastro inflammation and pancreatitis. He gave her shots and IV, told us not to give any of the Nutro but to put her on a chicken and rice diet and then he sent us home with antibiotics and stomach medicine. She was still so ill.
The next morning, we took her back into the vets for a recheck and he gave her a pain shot and kept her the rest of the day. That night after getting her home, she seemed to somewhat be on the road to recovery. But the next morning, Feb. 27, 2013, she was feeling poorly again. She was lethargic, trembling, couldn't walk far, although she's drinking water on her own and eating the chicken and rice I'm cooking for her. She's still very ill. I'm calling my vet today and let them know about this site and all the complaints about Nutro. And I'm taking her in for another recheck. I will be returning the food back to PetCo and give them the printed complaints from this site and getting the Nutro rep. info. Also, I'll be filing a complaint with the FDA. We love and treasure our 14-year old dog and until I started her on this food, she was in good health. Nutro Natural Choice Dog Food (Lamb & Rice) - There is something wrong with this food. Stop feeding it to your dogs immediately. My dog started getting ill around the beginning of January, right after I started feeding her the new Natural Choice Lamb & Rice. She was perfectly fine before that and is only 2 years old. After feeding her the new Natural Choice Lamb & Rice, she developed many of the symptoms described by others on this site: lethargic, sneezing & scratching after eating, trouble getting up, muscle spasms in her sleep, barking in her sleep, blood in her stools. She also started peeing in the house and ate much slower than she did previously. She would also start to chatter after eating this food. We took her to the vet and found that she has a urinary tract infection. We took her off Natural Choice food last week and there has been a big and noticeable improvement. We contacted Petsmart where we purchased the food, but they said they will do nothing because they have had no complaints. If your dog has experienced any of these symptoms, please inform the retailer you purchased it from.

She would leave her food and walk away which she had never done previously. The past 2 weeks, she became lethargic and the diarrhea became worse and daily. I switched her to rice and chicken 3 days ago and poof! The diarrhea has stopped. She is still a bit lethargic and I am calling my vet in the morning (who I had already talked with last week about this). Today, I was telling the owner of the doggie day care to not feed her her evening meal and the reason (I had given them Nutro food for her feeding). He has always eaten Nutro Max large breed chicken and rice. I purchased the new formula at the end of December. By January 2013, he had lost 27lbs. After a couple rounds of antibiotics from the vet, there was still blood in his urine. He was referred to a specialist and via ultrasound, was diagnosed with cancer. The dog food was the only change in his routine. He has been healthy, gets good and regular vet care, he exercises, etc. My dog is still with me, but his prognosis is not good. I would not recommend this food to anyone, but I fear the problem is more widespread than just Nutro. I will never use that food again and will start making my own dog food.

I have three dogs, a weimer (11 yrs), a rotti (2 yrs) and a rescue (roughly 8 yrs). We switched their food to Nutro Max when we got the rotti because the breeders had their dogs on that brand and they all looked healthy. I had nothing but good things to say about Nutro food brand and our pet mart had a rewards program that gave us one free bag after 10 purchases which is great with 3 big dogs. All three dogs started acting strange at the beginning of the year. Sometimes vomiting but we didn't think anything about it because they had grass in their vomit. Dogs eat grass therefore, they vomit, normal, right? Nutro discontinued the Weight Control of their brand so we switched the two older ones to Nutro Senior and kept the rotti on Nutro adult, usually lamb and rice but sometimes adult breed if they were out of that type of food but all Nutro products.
Last Thursday, my rescue Stella started voting large amounts of liquid and grass. She was lethargic. You could see she was not feeling good at all. She didn't want to eat at their second feeding and continued to vomit. We kept a close eye on her overnight but in the morning, she vomited what smelled like blood. The blood was in small chunks. I rushed her to the vet. X-rays and bloods tests later revealed she had pancreatitis and was taking a turn for the worse. She had to be hospitalized through the weekend with blood in her stool and she wasn't able to keep anything down. After being on an IV all weekend and medication at the hospital, we were able to bring her home. She still had instances of blood in her stool but I was able to feed her rice and chicken but only a little bit. She is still dehydrated and I monitor her water intake so she doesn't vomit it back up.
Throughout this whole ordeal, I noticed my other two dogs starting to show the same signs (i.e. vomiting, eating grass). On a hunch, I googled Nutro Recalls and found this. I contacted the pet mart and asked if there was any type of recall on this brand dog food. I contacted Nutro to let them know what happened. I see that Nutro changed their formula in December which makes sense why my dogs started to act strange and eat grass. They had apparently eaten something that disagreed with their tummy. I changed the dogs' food yesterday. Where can I have Nutro's food analyzed? It has made my baby sick and could have been potentially fatal if I had not googled their brand and found this site. I have an astronomical vet bill that I feel Nutro should be accountable for. This is awful. They need to take their product off the shelves immediately.

I've been feeding my Chihuahua Nutro Small Breed Adult Formula for several months. Around the beginning of February, I got a new bag. And soon thereafter, he began having frequent vomiting spells. He would throw up either white foam or yellow bile. After a vomiting spell, he'd shiver and act lethargic for several hours. Once I'd get him to eat some plain rice or oatmeal, he'd perk up and go back to his usual happy self. But a few days later (back on his dog food), he'd have another vomiting spell. There were also a few instances of mucousy, bloody stool and really bad gas. I never suspected the Nutro food to be the culprit, because I had no idea they changed the formula. These symptoms went on for three weeks, and we could not figure out the diagnosis. I stumbled upon this website last night; thank goodness! I'm happy to report that Stu is on a new food now, and I'm thankful that he's made a total recovery. My sympathy goes out to those who lost their pets over this.

The last bag of Nutro Natural Choice Small breed weight management control was purchased on 1/31/13 at the Pet Supplies Plus where I always buy from. The bag didn't get opened for probably 4 days after purchase. I didn't know know that the formula had been changed. I observed both of my Shih Tzus vomiting bile, increased thirst, lethargic acting and not interested in eating the "newly formulated" food. I had no idea what was going on with them, so I asked a friend who is a breeder and was given a link to this site.
I was horrified to read about all the sick and even worse, dead dogs. I immediately returned to Pet Supplies Plus. They said they were not aware of any problems, but were more than willing to help me get my dogs better. A change of dog food was advised. Today I received a phone call from the Nutro Natural Choice Company. Since I threw out the bag and took the unused portion back to the store, I was told that nothing can be done. Shortly after buying the "new and improved" formula, our dog refused to eat the food. Within two weeks, he became very lethargic. He also was having a very difficult time standing up. We took him to the vet who gave him an IV (fluids), appetite stimulant, and pain medicine. After not seeing much improvement, we took him back to the vet. They ran a series of blood, urine, and feces tests and x-rays. All came back normal other than a slightly elevated white blood cell count. He prescribed antibiotics and an anti-inflammatory. He died two days later. He was almost ten years old. He was very healthy until Nutro changed the formulation of their dog food.

It’s 2/25/2013 and after reading these posts, sounds like my dog too, which is a Shepard Collie, but more Shepard! Granted she is 13 in March but was OK besides normal aging, last Monday, I had to take to her to the vet because of limping on the right front paw. The vet did an x-ray and said it was Arthritis. She got better and walked in 2 days. We went for her follow-up on Friday - it was good, I thought we were out of the woods. On Sunday morning, she has lost total control of back right leg, like it was paralyzed and she was shaking, too - a lot of muscle spasms while sleeping. We put our dogs on Nutro dog food the beginning of last month. Our Sheltie kept having pasty poop. I had to put her in the shower, also blood - red fresh blood. My Shep has very black stools - indicative of blood. After investigating, Nutro has so many complaints since they changed their food. I stopped the food immediately (some animals are dying). Last Saturday, we took it back, got our money back and we switched to a different food.
Something is not right! After all the research, I do believe it has something to do with their food. It seems that there is some kind of cover up going on and what I do know, not just myself, but many people are spending many of their dollars to vets, without getting any answer of the cause. I do know that I am heartbroken because it does not look well for my Shepard, and I am emotionally drained. Somewhere there has to be an answer for this. Tonight, we are going to the vet as I cannot see my best friend drag her leg and fall all the time. I am scared to death that she will have to be put down tonight and maybe she wouldn't have to be. Really lost!

My family has been feeding only Nutro Products to our dogs for over 20 years. My two Cavaliers have been eating the Natural Choice Chicken, Rice & Oatmeal formula for many years. I loved this dog food and used to recommend it to everyone. However, much like many other consumers on this website, after the change to the new and improved formula, both of my dogs became sick. I bought the first new and improved bag sometime around the end of December 2012. My older dog, who was a very healthy 12-year old, began having loose and more frequent stool and vomiting about twice a week.
We were assuming that this was being caused by a factor of her older age. These symptoms, not seeming too serious to take her to the vet, continued. In the beginning of February, the loose stool turned to diarrhea and the vomiting became daily. I immediately started feeding boiled chicken and rice. She would get a little better so I would add some dry back in and then she would be sick again right after. After this, I made a vet appointment. They ran blood work and checked her fecal with no major concerns being found. She is on prescription food now and is slowly getting better.
My other dog who is only 7 also started with similar issues around late January/early February. Her main symptom was very mucous-like stool and occasional vomiting. Since she is much younger, as soon as she was taken off the food, she began getting better immediately. This has been a very disappointing situation since I have been such a fan of Nutro for so many years. It is hard to believe that a company could change a formula so much that this is the result for so many pets. I encourage everyone who is reading or reporting about this product on this website to first call the company to the report the problem and also consider filing a complaint with the FDA.

My 4-month old Boston Terrier became very ill very quickly. We thought he was napping but he kept lifting his head up. So I went to check on him and there was blood all over his pillow. We rushed him to the emergency vet hospital. Long story short, we went through every possible problem: Did he eat anything poisonous? Did he chew electrical cords? Did he swallow something and cut his insides? After all the x-rays and tests came back normal, the only issue was his lungs were filling with liquid and he couldn't breathe. The vet was stumped.
No new changes in any daily routines and I don't work so I'm with him every second of the day. He passed. After him passing, we immediately came home and searched every inch of this house for something that may have caused this. My bf mentioned he changed his food to Nutro that same day but that can't be what caused his sudden illness he said, because that is what he has fed his dogs in the past. I researched it and this comes up. I freaked out. We are going to get this dog food analyzed and sue if this is the cause. It's the only reason I can come up with. I have been a loyal Nutro customer for 10+ years and would recommend it to everyone I know. I've fed numerous dogs Nutro without any issues. I will not feed my dog this food ever again after they reformulated all of their food. My 5 1/2 year old corgi, Max, got very sick from the new and improved Nutro Lamb & Rice Small Bites. It started with vomiting and diarrhea, to the point where his diarrhea was pure blood. I took him to the vet right away and they could not figure out what was wrong with him, so they decided to treat him for a parasite found in stagnant puddles, which is really rare in the dead of winter in Minnesota. He instantly started getting better after I took him off Nutro.
I randomly came across all of these complaints right before I started feeding him Nutro again and I was shocked. I immediately went out and bought a different kind of food and I will never feed my dog Nutro again. I contacted Nutro via their Facebook page and told them their food made my dog very sick. They made a condescending comment that I should "consult with my vet." Really? Like that wasn't the first thing I did when my dog was having diarrhea that was pure blood? They should be ashamed of themselves for not issuing a voluntary recall. Hopefully, other pet owners will come across these stories and stop feeding their pets Nutro!

My ten-year-old Newfoundland has been fed Nutro dry dog food since he was a pup. He blessed our lives at nine weeks old and his breeder recommended the brand. He has never had problems in his ten years with eating anything! The last couple o years, he has been eating Nutro Max large breed senior (chicken formula) and has had no problems. That is until December. As soon as we purchased and opened the new bag, he vomited vile after his first feeding. Within days, his normally formed stool was runny and had a large amount of mucus in it. Our dog, who never before had a problem holding his bathroom through the night was waking up at 3:00AM and crying to be let out. He had horrible gas throughout the day.
Unfortunately, due to it being Christmas and the hustle and bustle of the season, I assumed stress or forbidden treats fed by unknowing guests were contributing to his stomach and potty issues. I never made the connection. I never dreamed it was the Nutro dog food causing the issues, though I had a hunch it was something he ate not agreeing with him. We did food trials. He was fine on chicken and rice, but as soon as the dry Nutro food was gradually started back into his diet, the gas and diarrhea would return. Vet exam, blood tests and stool samples all came back normal. More food trials all with the same results. As soon as Nutro was his main source of food, his discomfort was evident and diarrhea with large amounts of gel-like mucus returned.
It was about a month of this when researching pet foods (our dog's vet recommended switching his food with three different main ingredients than his current food) that I came across this site and was horrified that Nutro, the food I trusted, could be poisoning our beloved pet. There were just too many complaints with similar problems that we were experiencing to just be coincidence. I immediately returned the unused portion of the Nutro dog food and switched to a holistic brand, dry kibble I thoroughly researched. I didn't even gradually introduce the new food as recommended (no way was I giving my dog Nutro again!). My dog's problems began gradually decreasing and his stool was back to a solid form.
It has taken a while for his body to return to normal, but he is now on the right track with a food that I feel is superior to Nutro; a food that doesn't have over a thousand complaints on sites like the one I'm writing on right now! His energy has returned; his spirits lifted. He no longer is suffering from painful gas or late night dashes outside to relieve himself. If someone would have told me before this occurred that Nutro could contribute to serious health dangers in my dog, I probably would not have believed them. But after seeing what my pet has gone through, I hope my writing this, if anything, gets at least one pet owner who uses Nutro to switch to a better quality food for the sake of their pet, then maybe the suffering my dog and other dogs/cats have experienced after being fed Nutro wasn't all for nothing.

I have fed my cats Nutro products on and off for years. It was one of the few foods their breeder recommended. Over the past year, I had not fed much Nutro and had been feeding Blue Buffalo. I needed more food and decided to try Nutro Senior as it was on sale and my cats are 9 and 11. Shortly after, my 9-year-old cat started vomiting and having diarrhea. I brought him to the vet and was told he had a parasite and he was put on antibiotics. Funny thing is, he is strictly an indoor cat and we do not have any dogs, but his parasite is usually found in animals that drink from stagnant ponds. On the antibiotic, he did better.
Soon after stopping the medicine, the diarrhea started again. The vomiting came back and he had gotten sick 5 times in less than 24 hours. I brought him back to the vet and he no longer had a parasite but they could not figure out why he had diarrhea and was vomiting. His blood work came back normal. They placed him back on antibiotics, a special diet and had to give him an injection to stop the vomiting so he wouldn't become dehydrated. This went on for about 6 weeks.
I looked online to see maybe if there was a recall on the food as that is when all of his problems started. I came across this website and found many people complaining of the same problems. I don't know why it only affected one of my cats but he tends to have a sensitive stomach. I ended up throwing a $25 bag of food in the garbage after reading this. About a week after not having Nutro, his symptoms went away and he is doing fine. I feel bad for those who reported that they lost their pet after getting sick from eating this food. I will never buy this brand again and highly recommend Blue Buffalo.

About a month ago, to my surprise, they started coughing and puking again, diarrhea, lip smacking, licking paws more, etc. I thought how in the world are they sick again? My girlfriend's dog was doing the same but worse with excessive vomiting and diarrhea where she had to take her in to the vet. Tons of tests and IVs later, no info. Guess what, she feeds her Nutro as well. My other friend posted that his dog had died suddenly, a healthy 4-year old and attributed it to the food.
What food? Well, he fed her Nutro, of course. He warned me and everyone about the food and new formula, showed me these reviews and it started making sense. I feel so horrible for feeding them this and not paying attention to them not wanting to eat, their symptoms, etc. I feel so horrible my friend's dog died and my other friend's dog almost did. It makes me sick to my stomach. I'm spreading the word on this and complaining as well. I just switched them to temporary food for now until I can save enough to get the best kind, so I will be monitoring their improvements, hopefully. Please think twice about feeding your dog this new and improved Nutro.

Late last fall, my almost 7-yr old 95-100lb Bernese Mountain Dog started vomiting in the night. It didn't last too long, but it surprised me, as he hadn't done that since he was a pup. When I took him in for a Bordatella update to board, imagine my shock to discover that he had dropped to 85lb. He hadn't seemed himself, and I'd had to put organic pumpkin in his food to help with loose stools, but nothing seemed too amiss, except I had noted both that his skin seemed very dry, and his coat hadn't grown back in after I had him shaved in the summer to help him weather the horrible heat wave. The vet did a blood test to rule out thyroid, and that came back normal. Then the itching started. He scratched and licked and scratched and licked until he had missing hair, large round sores and a strong yeasty smell. Since then, he's been on three rounds of antibiotics, through numerous oatmeal baths, and I've nearly torn out my own hair with worry, because as far as I knew nothing had changed.
Then I remembered noticing that the bag had looked different when I bought his last bag of food. I had asked at the store if the formulation had changed, as I would have to 'feather' in the new food, and they said no, just the packaging. Well, I'm a pack rat, and I use old dog food bags for yard waste, so I went and got the previous bag, and guess what? The formula was enormously different! So I looked online for help, and what did I find? I found 1300 other people struggling with issues with this brand of food. I fed him this safely for almost 7 years to the tune of hundreds of dollars, trying to be sure he got good food. Now I can add nearly $500 in vet bills in under 4 months, and the horror of watching my dog in an agony of itching without being able to help. I'm now looking at limited ingredient foods and will never buy Nutro products again.

Nutro max Chicken and Rice Large Breed dog food - As of mid-January, Shiloh exhibited signs of lack of appetite, white gums, lethargy, etc. She's been eating Nutro Max for 5 months now, no problems, regular bowel movements, gaining weight and being healthy. Then as of the beginning/middle of January 2013, she didn't want to eat the food, got diarrhea and had gelatinous poop. I switched her to rice and meat and she was regular again within a day, so I then switched her back to the Nutro Max, which she denied eating. Typically, this dog eats in the am and pm on a regular schedule and begs for food. As of the new bags of food (Jan. 2013), she has skipped breakfast and let it sit all day till she's starving, then would only eat a small amount. I was finally at the point that she convinced me that something’s wrong with the food. Today she didn't eat at all. Then I tried another brand of dog food and boom! She's hungry again! She ate the food! She finished her serving! I'm trusting my dog’s instinct on this one.
Something is wrong in the food. I knew a baby who denied formula for 3 days and a week later it was recalled. I'm trusting my dog and have a feeling this food will be recalled soon enough. I returned the Nutro to Petsmart as per their open bag policy and told them the situation, and am waiting to return a call from Nutro tomorrow. Thanks to all the other reviewers, I'm switching to a USA brand with USA ingredients. I don't have any compassion for any mistakes by a million dollar company. I'm switching food and I feel terrible that essentially I have been poisoning my dog by only offering her this food source, which she has been drastically affected by.

I started feeding my 3-year old American Bulldog Nutro Natural Choice about 6 months ago. A couple months ago, she started sneezing a lot and itching. I took her to the vet and they tested for Valley Fever, but it was negative so they diagnosed her with Kennel Cough. She was on antibiotics for two months because it just wouldn't clear up. Then she started having bloody diarrhea and vomiting bile. She was so dehydrated she had to be given fluids for two days.
The vet tested her for Giardia, Pancreatitis, Parvo, Heartworms, Parasites, and took x-rays. I've spent $800 on vet bills and no diagnosis can be given. I never considered the dog food to be the culprit, because it is supposed to be a higher end product that is healthy. When I found out about all the health problems other dogs have been having on this food, it disgusted me. I've thrown out all the rest of the food and purchased a new brand. Don't buy this dog food; it will cause harm to your animals!

I started feeding my dogs Nutro MAX dog food when a friend had given me the brand new, unopened bag because his own dog had suddenly passed away. It was a nice gesture and saved me some money. After about 2 weeks of transitioning my dogs to this new food, I noticed that my female had developed a very severe yeast infection in her ear. But that is just the tip of the iceberg. Out of nowhere, my perfectly healthy male had a seizure! The look of fear in his eyes was enough to break my heart, not to mention the fact that I was completely at a loss for why this would be happening.
Then I thought about it - the dog food. It's the only thing that had changed in my dogs' daily life. I immediately switched them back to their old food, treated my female's ear infection, and both dogs have been fine ever since. I will never buy Nutro pet food again and I am telling everyone I know about this poison. I'm so glad I found this website because it just confirms that it truly is the dog food that gave diseases to my dogs.

I have used Nutro for about 20 years, watched as the bag size dropped and the price went up last year. This year we get poison. Gypsy was a 4-and-1/2-year-old pit mix and my pointer was found abandoned in the desert for the coyotes. I came along just before sunset on a mountain bike and walked her out when she was 3 and 1/2 months old. She had never been sick a day and ran trails with me often, solid as a brick. I bought a new bag of the new and improved Monday, neither dog touched it until Tuesday night when hunger won out with Gypsy - the pointer never touched it and survived.
By Wednesday morning, we walked but she didn't want her treats - a first. Then, we found where she had vomited, couldn't even make it off the couch. By Wednesday evening, after returning from work, she was in continual spasms. My girlfriend, a nurse, took her to an emergency vet. On Tuesday, at 1 pm, we had to put her down. Her breathing was a heave with every breath. She couldn't open her eyes or move her outstretched tongue - such distress. I almost begged the doctor to put her down quickly. She was the friendliest of dogs.

My two dogs had been eating Nutro Natural Balance for almost a year without any problems. Around December 2012, I noticed the packaging had changed but bought the food anyway. My dogs developed diarrhea which steadily worsened. I took the dogs to the vet who tested them for parasites. They found none but still wrote a prescription for an antibiotic as a prophylactic measure. The antibiotic didn't help; the diarrhea became so bad the dogs couldn't make it outside. They started to vomit and became lethargic.
I started researching Nutro dog food and found multiple complaints about the food. I immediately switched their food to a high grade dog food, which I also researched for complaints and found none. The diarrhea and vomiting stopped within the day. My conclusion is that the Nutro food was poisoning my dogs. I wrote an email to Nutro explaining the problems my dogs experienced and asked them to investigate their food for contamination. I don't expect to hear from Nutro, but felt it was my responsibility to contact the company and to post this warning to others, who may be having similar problems with their pets.

I am so glad I was told to check out this site. My 4.5 year old golden retriever has been sick for months. I noticed the Natural Choice bag changed a few months ago and that the food looked different. I didn't think much of it as the food had been working well since he was a puppy. Over the past 5 months, my dog is frequently sick, lethargic, eats an abnormal amount of grass almost obsessively and often refuses to eat at all. I have shared these concerns with my vet and had no luck finding answers. I have also found that my dog has been licking his paws regularly. All of these symptoms were experienced by others on this site. I will not give my dog one more serving of this food. I am frustrated that this new and improved formula is obviously so harmful and toxic to dogs and it is still on the market. I hope the damage is not permanent and am glad he is still alive. I feel horrible for those who lost their pets due to this awful product.

Me to Nutro on 1/16/13: We have been using Nutro for years to feed our Chinese Crested, and he loved it. On 1/9/13 we needed to buy more, and the bag states new and improved. On the 12th, our 10-year old, who was previously healthy, was so sick that we had to put him to sleep. At that time, we were stunted because he had been fine. Just to note, his last vet appointment was in November. On 1/14/13, our 9-month old Chinese Crested started vomiting blood. We were blessed that after two days of treatment she is doing better.
The only change that we can think of was the food, Nutro Natural Choice for Toy Breeds. I called Nutro, and the representative said that the only change to the formula was added flavor (green tea and spearmint extracts). They are sending us a sample kit to test the food, and we are having a copy of the veterinarian report faxed to them for both dogs. Unfortunately, from our conversation, I got the feeling they are used to this kind of phone calls. There really was no compassion what so ever, just a lot of questions.
Nutro to me on 1/17/13: "Hi Brian. We are truly sorry for the loss of your wonderful Joe. Our condolences go out to your beautiful Lily for the loss of her best friend too. The Customer Relations Team truly is concerned and is trying to assist you in the best manner possible. We have elevated your feedback and are trying to ensure you are given the support and assistance you need in every way. Please also feel free to contact nutro@edelman.com so that we may continue to communicate with you."
Me to Nutro on 1/17/13: "Thank you for the condolences on our loss of Joe. As sad as we are at his sudden departure, we are equally saddened at the idea that this could happen again. We are more than willing to assist with any information you may need. Our veterinarian should have faxed their information for both Joe and Lily to you yesterday. As soon as I receive the sample kit, I will insure that it is promptly sent back to you. I know your company’s desire is to provide safe and quality products. That is why we have happily used them for years. When Joe suddenly became deathly ill, we were devastated. We would have done anything and spent any amount of money to save Joe. Unfortunately, his body was quickly shutting down. Then less than 48 hours later, Lily was ill. We immediately began to think of what could be causing this, and the only change that there has been was the purchase of a new bag of Nutro from Pet Smart. Thankfully, after two days of fluids and medication, Lily is doing better. I only wish we could have had the same result with Joe. Thank you for your assistance in this matter."
Me to Nutro on 1/24/13: With the sudden death of Joe and the illness of Lily, I have been doing a lot of research. It really bothers me to know that I may have fed them something that caused this. That morning, Joe’s symptoms, when we woke up, were vomiting, labored breathing, some body swelling, grey tongue, and he could not stand. The vet stated that the test revealed kidney failure, anemia, high glucose levels, and he had bloody diarrhea while they had him in another room for testing. Lily was vomiting blood and had black stool. These sure sounds like the symptoms listed below.
Studies of green tea extracts/supplements on rats and dogs caused kidney, liver, and GI toxicity (suffice it to say, liver and kidney cells were dying ugly deaths and there was bleeding in the GI tract). Toxicity and blood levels in dogs were much higher if they took the green tea on an empty stomach. The blood level effect is the same in people, which leads me to **. It seems that green tea extracts can have added health benefits, but they can also have health risk to dogs as well. All I can honestly say is that I truly believe that if it’s not the green tea extract, then something in that bag of dog food caused this issue for us. It has only been a week, but I have not received the sample kit nor have I had any other communication from them.
On 1/4/13: I contacted Nutro today and they have received my sample kit. The representative informed me that it has been turned over to their insurance company, and they will be contacting me. We have an appointment on the 8th with our local NBC affiliate to discuss our situation.
On 1/5/13: I just got off the phone with Liberty Mutual, Nutro’s insurance company. The food was tested and compared to a sample from the batch they save during manufacturing, and it came back normal (normal smell, normal consistency). I have to ask, “Are dogs dying the new normal?” What I found odd was that if the tests were normal, then why was I asked if household cleaners could have gotten into the food, or if the bag had a hole/rip in it when we purchased it from Petsmart. I’m assuming to imply that something could have gotten into the food between manufacturing and our purchase of it for our home. Our food is stored in a plastic container with a top that seals it closed as it has been for years. I was asked if we walk our dogs on a leash and if we always watch them when they go outside. Since our dogs are hairless, we do not walk them during cold months and yes, we do watch them when they go outside in our fenced backyard. Why? They do not have hair, and they hate the cold. Therefore, we have to make sure they do their business outside, so they don’t do it inside.
Lily, our puppy, ate 3 of the valentine candies on the 13th when they were spilled, and it seems that the Nutro’s veterinarian was wondering if this could have been the issue. However, they were bought after Joe’s death so he did not eat any, and he died on Saturday. The Nutro’s veterinarian also thought Lily’s illness could be because we had her spade 10 days before. She had no fever or pain and was fine. Nothing was mentioned of what their vet thought about Joe’s cause of sudden system failure. The Liberty Mutual representative stated that because of the test, they could not compensate me because the food tested normal. I informed them that I have not once ever asked for compensation and truly never expected it. After all, would that mean there is a problem?
They are to give my feedback to Nutro and follow up with me in 3 to 5 business days. My feedback was for them not to mislead consumers into thinking they are buying a true US product, especially when some of the ingredients may be coming from foreign countries, such as New Zealand, etc. I wonder where New Zealand gets the protein source for Nutro. Could it be China? Honestly, I do not know. But If I buy a car, I know what percent of that car has parts from different countries even if it was made in Detroit. It should be considered false advertising to market and sell a product as a product of the US when it may contain materials of foreign origin.
Also, my goal is not to be compensated but to spread awareness of the possibility that history is repeating itself again (remember 2009). When I first looked at the Nutro Consumer Affairs Complaints in January, there were 1272 complaints; today there are 1294. That’s 22 more complaints in 20 days, but that is not a problem. If you choose to use Nutro, please watch for vomiting, bloody vomiting, diarrhea, bloody diarrhea, black stool, extreme thirst, and inability to stand or walk. These are the symptoms that I noticed in one or both of my dogs.

I have 2 small breed dogs, rat terriers. They have been eating Nutro Natural choice since they were 8 weeks old; they’re 6 now. We began with the puppy version of chicken, oatmeal and rice, and later moved them to the adult version. They have been very healthy dogs. When Nutro decided to bring out this "new" formula, and we bought it, they began to vomit and have diarrhea. The stool problem was so bad that my crate-trained dogs could not hold it. I would come home and find runny stools in their crate (this is not like them). Although eager to eat, it was obviously making them sick. It has been 2 days since they have been of off this food and given plain rice and boiled chicken (vet’s recommendation). Tonight one of my ratties had a seizure! How does this happen to a healthy dog? I called Petsmart and because I don't have the bag, they will do nothing. I also plan on contacting Nutro and getting somewhere. If my dog is permanently damaged or passes away, Nutro will have a class action suit!

We bought a big bag of Nutro Large Breed and a small bag of their puppy food. My adult dog ate it once, threw up, and refused to eat it again. We left the bowl out all day, thinking she just wasn't hungry, but she was begging and whining. Next day, I poured a new bowl. She still refused to eat it. The puppies got into her food while it was out, and that night had terrible diarrhea, threw up, and after that refused to eat their food or hers (they smell similar). They had been undereating the puppy Nutro to begin with. I thought it just wasn't smelly enough.
That same night, not making the connection, I added broth to my adult dog's food, successfully enticing her to eat. She threw up in our room that night and had diarrhea all the next day. I was seriously concerned we had contracted parvo - the puppies were fosters - until a rescue friend mentioned the Nutro problems. We drove to the city and bought two new bags of food - Blue Buffalo this time - and threw out the Nutro. Everyone's appetites returned, and the symptoms disappeared.
We only bought the Nutro in the first place because we live in a small town and needed some high quality food in a hurry. Those puppies were so sick. I'm glad they didn't die. This food needs to be recalled immediately. A few years ago, Wellness forgot a vitamin additive in our cat food - they immediately recalled it, voluntarily, and contacted us to exchange the food. That is what a quality company does.

Our 16-month-old chocolate lab has eaten Nutro Max Chicken and Rice since he was 6 weeks old with no apparent problems. On Sunday, I opened a new bag of his usual food and put his serving in his bowl. I noticed right away that the shape of the food was different, but went ahead and fed him. He ate fine on Sunday. On Monday, he wouldn't eat his food in the morning (this is a dog who never misses a meal). That night, same thing - he would not eat his food. I added something to it which enticed him to eat it, but was a bit worried as this was unusual for him. The next morning, he wouldn't eat. I didn't entice him and figured he would eat when he was ready. I gave him his dinner, but again he wouldn't eat. I didn't force it. He had a normal bowel and played ball, but seemed a bit lethargic as well.
Then he threw up three different times - mostly liquid/bile. We chatted with our vet friend and considered taking him in, but thought we'd give it one more day. This morning, he wouldn't eat for the third day in a row. I enticed him into it and he ate. When I got home from work, he had been outside already and played ball; but while outside, I noticed some spots of diarrhea. I went ahead and fed him. He didn't want it at first, but again I enticed him into eating it. Within a half hour, he had terrible diarrhea. We discussed taking him to the vet and decided we would do so tomorrow.
I kept thinking of the change in the shape of the dog food and started researching on the internet. That's when I found this site with all of these similar reports. I read one story after another and immediately drove to the store for a new bag and a new brand of food. I am upset with myself because I feel like I enticed our dog into eating food that is obviously problematic. I gave him only a handful of the new food and he gobbled it down. I plan on giving him small portions at first until he gets used to it. I will never buy Nutro food again.

Our 2 dogs have eaten NutroMax Adult and NutroMax Senior for many, many years. We opened new bags last week and started both dogs on it. They began antibiotics yesterday and they've been on Imodium as needed. Yesterday, the vet told us they've gone hungry way too long and we were to feed them their regular food (I thought she was crazy but dogs apparently are different than people and we were to feed them their regular food in smaller portions).
One dog ate 1 cup of food for dinner and let loose diarrhea at 1:30 a.m. (We lost 4 or more hours of sleep in the middle of the night 2 nights in a row cleaning carpeting and insomnia). Our other dog didn't even touch the food yet the vet found diarrhea on her tail. It's hard to figure because she hadn't eaten anything in 3 days. The 2nd visit to the vet was this morning and the vet hydrated them by injections and said it was possible the food could be making them sick. They fasted all day today, and tonight they gladly ate boiled chicken and rice (we'll have to see how they do). I found this website about NutroMax. We decided that we're going to change brands. We've missed sleep, missed work, and spent a fortune at the vet. We're not willing to find out what could happen if we continue feeding them NutroMax.

My 8-year-old American Bulldog, Diesel, has been on Nutro Lamb and Rice for a few years and I noticed that when the new packaging came out, even though the staff at the pet store swore it was the same kibble recipe, he has been eating 2, sometimes 3 times, what he normally does. He started getting hungrier earlier. He went from eating at 8 am and 5 pm to eating at 8 am, 1 pm, 4 pm and again at 7 pm. Then, I picked up a new bag about 2 weeks ago and shortly thereafter (this last Sunday), he started vomiting bile. He went down to eating once on Sunday, once on Monday and once on Tuesday when he began throwing up everything (food and water) on Tuesday afternoon.
On Wednesday, I woke up at 4 am from Diesel pacing in the hall; I rose to find the kitchen floor completely covered in vomit. I rushed him down to the 24-hour Emergency vet where they test for pancreatitis, administer fluids for dehydration and give him a dose of nausea medication. They also performed an Xray which came back inconclusive. I am now on day 6 (Saturday) of my dog being deathly ill. He went back to the vet yesterday for another round of fluids to keep him hydrated plus another shot for nausea. He currently isn't in distress or pain but he certainly is uncomfortable (who isn't when they're this sick).
I'm trying everything to get him better with Pedialyte, Pepto-Bismol, a laxative to help pass things along and hand feeding him any acceptable healthy human food to try and get him to eat. The only reason I believe he is still alive is from his size. He's 160 pounds and it would likely take a fair amount of toxic food to get him this sick.

Nutro lamb & rice senior limited ingredients chunks in gravy - I have 2 dogs that were on this food for about 8 months. In November, my pug had 6 seizures in 2 days. He is epileptic and has been his whole life. He is 11. Normally, he has 1 seizure a year and his pheno levels are checked twice a year. I noticed the label change on the dog food around Oct. or Nov. and questioned the gal about it, and she said nothing had changed in the food. I also could not find the dog food, and they couldn't restock in Sept. Okay. I didn't have any old labels to compare; however, I should have paid more attention since I had such a hard time finding it in Sept. and my problems started in early November. In December, my pug developed pancreatitis. I still didn't think too much about it. We did x-rays, bloodwork, etc. He also developed some gagging, like a hairball in his throat. My other 12-year-old part pug/chihuahua also started getting sick.
Jan. 12, I came home to find the 12-year-old with severe loose diarrhea. Both dogs had begun eating less and less and losing weight. 3 days later, my 11-year-old was in full-blown pancreatitis again (throwing up, etc., liver and pancreas levels off the charts). More ultrasound, x-rays, meds, and blood work. He is slowly beginning to recover. 2 pancreatic attacks in 2 months? Both dogs were taken off this food. The 12-year-old is gaining weight and has no issues. The 11-year-old is also doing much better. No more hairball gagging. My vet and I suspect the food since both dogs became ill since November. I almost lost my 11-year-old. He was in so much pain. So heartbreaking. If he doesn't recover, I will pursue this issue further. Definitely, this brand should be investigated and probably pulled out from shelves.

I have a 10-year-old Westie; she is the love of my life. Ever since she was a pup, she has had a sensitive stomach so naturally I am constantly watching what I feed her. She grew up with and continues to eat Science Diet Oral Care. It is the only one she loves and I have never had issues with this brand.
Recently (around 4 - 5 months ago), I purchased Nutro Ultra (Wild Blueberry & Pomergranate) snacks and, to my surprise, she loved these treats. So, after I finished the bag, of course, I went to buy another bag. Shortly after this purchase, my Westie started to have diarrhea as well as throwing up. The throwing up I brushed off because, as I mentioned, she has always had a sensitive stomach and numerous vet bills have taught me not to rush to the vet too quickly. Learn to wait and see as animals can take very good well of themselves and if there is no improvement, then consult your vet
So, I waited and the diarrhea went away, also the vomiting stopped. During a monthly bath, I noticed bumps, sandy-like, on her chest and it seemed to cause her to itch. Again, I took a step back before rushing to the vet, thinking it may be this new shampoo or something else. Never did I suspect these treats. The bumps got worse and scabby. I rang the vet and was told to come in for appointment; however, the dates my vet gave were the days I was out of town. I tried other vets but there were no openings. Then I thought, maybe, just maybe it is the biscuits causing this. I stopped giving them to her and her symptoms started to diminish. I was happy. I went to the pet store where I bought the treats and was told that the Nutro Ultra mentioned in my subject line is being discontinued
I had a bag of Nutro Natural Choice treats and was told nothing is wrong with these treats. However, after a few of them, the bumps have reappeared so now I threw out this bag as well and will never purchase any Nutro products again. I will bring my Westie to my vet as the bumps seemed to cluster more near the pit of the left foreleg.

I have been a believer in Nutro dog products for over 7 years even after the scare of dogs dying and getting really sick on the Nutro dog food years ago. I went and tried Blue Dog Food. My dog fecal matter was a little runny but after finishing the Blue dog food, I did go back to Nutro. I am not like that! If I find a company to have a huge issue, I usually don't go back and purchase anything. People's dogs passing away from what they found out what was in their foods really made their dogs sick really made me sad. My Nutro dog food was never recalled and I kept buying Nutro. And this past time, I would have to say I am done with them completely. My dog didn't get sick on their food like everyone is saying here, but her attitude towards her food had become an issue! She stopped eating and sometimes would go 12 hours without any food and then us forcing her to try and eat.
She only eats 1/3 of a cup supposed to be two times a day but was hardly getting that with the Nutro brand. She has no problems eating her treat she gets every night. I just don't know why she would not eat the new bag of Nutro. This is my second bag of Nutro since they change the look of the bags with new and improved statement on their product. I just went to the pet store and they let me exchange my new bag of Nutro for a brand that the man at the store bragged on for me to try. We went over the ingredients and I am happy with the choice I made. When I came home, my little Yorkie ate her food so fast it almost broke my heart. She was so hungry! I never want to say bad things about a company, but something is just isn't right with the new and improved Nutro dog food. Just follow your instincts if you are having issues with your dog being picky. There are a lot of dog food companies to choose from. Best of luck to all.

They both loved the taste. I was very proud that I had purchased the perfect food with main ingredient - "chicken". Then about a week into their eating it, they both became very sick. My senior dog, Scout, vomited after every dinner. My puppy, Toby, was up all night long (every 2 hours) with diarrhea. This went on for a few days. I couldn't figure out why they both got so sick at the same time. I decided that perhaps it was their food, and I went online to see if others had the same experience.
I found this website and see that this exact thing has happened to other dogs in the past month. I changed their food, and both dogs slept through the night last night - no vomiting or diarrhea. I'm convinced that something in the Nutro Ultra made them terribly sick. They appear to be such a good company on their website. Something must have gone very wrong with their product recently.

I have been feeding my Beagle that is 5 years old Nutro For Sensitive Stomachs for 3 years. I never had any problems with this food until the change of ingredients approximately a month ago. I thought it was a virus or something he got into but, after reading all this, I came to the conclusion that it is this food. We've been feeding our 14-year old bichon Nutro for about 4 years. He loved the stuff and would eat ridiculous amounts if we let him. However, ever since the formula change, he's been weak and hesitant to eat and now for the past several days throwing up bile. We thought he might have just needed an adjustment to the food but keeping him on it has just made things worse. After seeing all the recent complaints, we're definitely worried about him and taking him off it ASAP. (Interesting side note, since he's older we soften his food with water. The old formula softened really nicely but this new stuff strangely stays really hard and firm. Not sure if it's related or matters but I thought I'd throw it out there.)

Almost four years ago, my Poodle mix became very ill. She was throwing up and had bloody stools. She was kept for several days at the vet, getting fluids and allowing her digestive system a chance to rest. It was determined that she had kidney disease. I had been feeding her Nutro food. I stopped the food and threw it out. She now gets a homemade diet for kidney disease, and my other dogs are fed Blue or another premium brand supplemented with the homemade food. I would never feed my dog Nutro, and I tell everyone I know to avoid it. I know it was the food that made her almost die.

We have been feeding our dogs the Nutro adult chicken for a while now. Over the last 6 months or so, they have both been easting grass like crazy, and one of them started puking bile randomly during the day. Dogs sometimes eat grass, and I figured the other one was just getting old. Recently, they both started drinking a lot. Someone pointed me here and now I'm furious. Hopefully, my dogs will make a full recovery and there will be no permanent damage.

I fed my 2 Corgis Nutro from 2006-2008, when they were very young. When my female was 6 months old, she almost died. She was vomiting and passing blood in her stool. We did every test known to man - x-rays, everything - and could not find anything wrong with her. My male vomited yellow bile almost daily. We switched to Holistic Select and Blue Buffalo after that. The result was both dogs never had issues again and at 6 & 7 are very, very healthy. No more vomiting or weird incidents like the one when my female was a baby. When I worked at a pet supply store, a co-worker brought a metal detector with her one day. When she was going over the Nutro brand, it reacted. Not with any other food. We took some food out of an open back in the storeroom and placed it in a Styrofoam cup. It still set it off. We never bought that brand again.

My dog has what we call an iron stomach. He eats everything and never has issues with it. He has been on the cheapest of cheap foods and the most expensive foods. We used Nutro for about 2 months. We liked what we read about it on the bag and thought it would be good for our senior dog. After about 6 weeks, our dog started to drink water so much. I had never seen anything like it. We thought he might have diabetes because he was drinking so much water. He would then walk around crying in pain and go outside and eat grass until he threw up, every single day. The vet didn't see anything wrong with him and couldn't figure out what was going on. She asked us to change his food to see what happened and within a few days of changing it, he was back to normal.

In mid-December, I purchased a 15 pound bag of Nutro Natural Choice Small Breed dry food for my 5-year-old Dachshund. This is the first time I had purchased the large bag. In the past, I had always purchased the small bag. I had used Natural Choice for small breeds for a while with no noticeable problems. Shortly after starting on the new bag, my pet threw up but it didn't continue. So like many others have posted, I thought it was just an isolated problem. I noticed that he had started drinking lots of water and beginning January 11, he started throwing up and not eating. I took him to the vet and had an x-ray, which came back normal, and had blood work, which showed elevated liver enzymes. He was kept overnight at the vet and placed on intravenous fluids, and started on two different antibiotics.
January 12, the next day, we took him to the local emergency veterinary clinic where he continued with intravenous fluids overnight and sub-cutaneous fluids the next morning. The blood work was repeated and it had continued to elevate. On January 14, I returned to the vet and took him to the NC Veterinary Specialty Hospital for an ultrasound - which I did. The ultrasound did not show any abnormal results. On January 15, I had to consult with our vet where we started anti-nausea meds, appetite stimulants and continued with the antibiotics. He was unable to eat since the initial episode on January 11. On January 19, I took him back to the vet because he started getting worse. Blood work was repeated and his liver enzymes had skyrocketed. He had begun turning yellow. He was given a very poor prognosis. We were told to spend time with him for the next few days.
I didn't think to mention the food as a possible cause since we had used it for some time - never thinking that the new bag could be the problem. My pet was the picture of health prior to this episode. Besides the elevated liver enzymes, his symptoms were that he began drinking lots of water and urinating more frequently. As you know, I am extremely distraught and upset that I feed my dog this food if it goes out to be the cause.

I have a 6-year-old female pug and a 3-year-old male pug. I've been feeding them Nutro Adult (chicken, rice and oatmeal formula) for about 4 months. Let me first remind you, I've had no issues with either of these dogs until now. Over the past 2 months, I've gone through so much. The 3-year-old male first experienced diarrhea. I took him to the vet and a couple antibiotics later, we were back to road to health. Then shortly after, he started urinating blood. No stones in x-ray, but I'm waiting a month to do another lab test. Then about 3 weeks ago, he had anal glands protruding out of his rectum. He has also gotten ear infections in both ears. This was all in the past 2-3 months.
The 6-year-old female pug also had her first anal gland issue a few weeks ago (exact same thing). Now she has an ear infection, vomiting 2-3 times a day of mostly bile. Tonight was the first night she did not eat. The vet yesterday gave me some medicine for the nauseousness and said she should feel better in a day. Well she is getting worse. I honestly started thinking I was doing something wrong because both dogs are getting sick all of a sudden. Then I thought it was the dog treats. So tonight, I decided to Google the brand of dog food. I'm absolutely in shock, but a little relieved to know something is causing this. I'm changing food ASAP! We need to stop this before it happens to others!

I have used Nutro for years and switched to their Natural Choice when that line came out. I had 2 hairless Chinese Crested dogs (a male ~10 years, female ~7 months). I always buy the light pink bag and then supplement with the soft Small Adult food (3 flavors). I recently bought on 1/9 the new formula hard food (darker pink bag). On 1/12/2013, Saturday, my older dog suddenly experienced liver and pancreas failures; internal bleeding, etc; and his blood work went off the charts. He had just had blood work and was very well in November 2012. We had to help him pass on and he is sorely missed. Then this Monday, 1/14, my puppy started vomiting red blood and had black, bloody stool. The vet put her on IVs for 2 days and switched her immediately to Hills Science Diet for gastro intestinal health.
She is now home and I am hurt and angry. I heard that Nutro uses ingredients from China and makes the final product here so they can say made in USA. In addition, there is no recall. They are opening a file to investigate and asked for a food sample. PetSmart is still selling it and I am so afraid for others who might lose their best friend.

I have been feeding my 8-year-old golden retriever Nutro dry all of his adult life. I recently let myself run out and when I got to the store, I could not find Large Breed Weight Management as the packaging (and apparently the formula) had changed. It was suggested to me that it was perhaps time to switch to the senior formula anyway. At first, everything seemed fine. Moose loved his new kibbles! But halfway through the second bag, he began vomiting, sometimes just yellow bile and sometimes undigested food. He was eating grass and his thirst was increased. He became less interested in eating.
I assumed it was just stomach upset due to a busy holiday season and added some cooked rice to his food to encourage him to eat. The vomiting disappeared for a day or so but soon returned. Yesterday, I had him to the vet. Luckily, his bloodwork is clear. He is on a gastro-friendly diet for a few days and taking anti-emetics. Hopefully, this will be the remedy. Our German Shepherd mix had been eating Nutro Natural Choice Chicken Meal, Rice & Oatmeal formula for sensitive stomachs for at least 4 years without problems. We did not realize Nutro was going to change the formula until it was too late and our PetSmart only had the new formula. They reassured us though that they only took things out of the food, so we thought it would be okay to just feed our dog the new food. My wife and I fed this food to our dog for a week and nonstop vomiting and diarrhea ensued. We took her to the vet and went on a hunt for pet stores that still had the old formula dog food in the old style packaging. We fed our dog only the old formula food and as you can guess, my dog's stool and health immediately became better.
Thinking that maybe the new food was introduced too soon, we started mixing the old food with the new formula food. We started with an 80/20 blend and within just two days, the diarrhea returned! There is something very wrong with the new formula or something wrong with the new style Nutro food in general. We are going to throw out the new food and try and move her to a different brand now. I have been feeding Nutro Lamb and Rice to my pets for 13 years until just recently. My two Terriers passed away more than a year ago from natural causes and I acquired two more, a Wheaten and a Welsh. Both dogs were on the same food and doing well until about a month or so ago. We also met a Nutro rep at the pet store and she was telling us how the new formula was so much better. I absolutely hate it when dog food companies change their formulas! If it works, you have repeat customers for life. Now I will never buy that poison again.
Shortly after starting the new food cold turkey, both dogs started exhibiting strange behavior. My Welsh started becoming very aggressive and would not let us touch him. He was biting and behaving very badly. We spent good money on Vets and behaviorists trying to figure him out, but we also noticed that our Wheaten was doing the same thing - pacing relentlessly, spinning in circles and being very aggressive whereas he was always shy and calm. We were actually afraid of our Welsh. We knew something was wrong, and I know from being a dog owner for many years, you always look at "what changed" first. Nothing had changed, other than the food.
We took them off Nutro and put them on Hills Science diet. Within a week, our Welsh had come back to be himself again, although he has thrown up bile a couple of times. Even the owners of the doggie daycare we take him to, noticed a change. They actually asked, "What did you do to him?" He was behaving again being the loveable little boy we knew before. Our Wheaten is still having issues, but he has only been off the food for less than a week now. We are praying things will get back to normal sooner than later.
Upon reading many other reviews, it seems to be more than a coincidence that something is going on that should not be with this food. Use your own judgment to decide if you want to put your pet on this food and please read what others have said, many have gone through much worse and tragic experiences. We just hope there is no permanent damage, otherwise if there is, any lawyer out there who have pets on this food, a class action lawsuit maybe a thought.

We recently purchased a new bag of Nutro Natural Choice Senior (pink bag) dog food. Nutro has been their normal diet. This wasn't a change of diet or a brand change. After consuming the food, all 3 dogs have become ill. The first dog started with vomiting. All 3 then had runny diarrhea that showed signs of blood progressively getting worse. The sickest of the 3 dogs then had severe, watery diarrhea - mostly blood. She was seen by our vet yesterday, 12/27/12. They sent out a stool culture and sent her home with meds since she was not running a fever. Last night, she quickly became deathly ill. We rushed her into an emergency clinic. They suggested she was too ill and suggested she be put to sleep. She was only 8 and very healthy. We are completely devastated.
The stool sample came back clean with no sign of parasites. The other 2 dogs are being seen by the vet now, as we have to focus on them in hopes they do not die as well. I called and reported the possibility of the food to my local pet store and spoke with a representative at Nutro. I have the bag of food. I'm hoping our vet can run tests on it as well as testing the stomach of our dog that passed this morning. I know this is quick and vague. I'm very distraught at the moment. I came across this website last night while researching. I was shocked to see the very recent similar accounts from other pet owners.
Has anyone received any response from the company? Have they found out anything? No pet owner should ever have to go through this! I will put together a better account of the facts as I receive results from my vet. RIP Pixie, 12/28/12.

All I know is that I bought Max cat wet food from time to time over the last two years, although I normally feed my 3 cats Science Diet dry and wet. About 4 weeks ago, I decided to just feed the cats Max wet because it was a few cents cheaper and also continue with dry on the side. I took my boy cat to the vet about 3 weeks ago for a lump on his tail, but also noted his normally somewhat loose stools were really getting bad. The doctor was more concerned about the bump which turned out benign. I added some pumpkin to his Max, hoping it would get better but gave up when it didn't seem to help. About 2 weeks later, I noticed one of my females also had soft stool. I went away overnight to come back one night to a kitchen full of vomit and also diarrhea all around the litter box. I realized now it was not only my boy, but also my girl who never had problems.
I gave her some syringes of water to prevent dehydration. I thought perhaps my girl had eaten spoiled food the day before I left, but then remembered my boy had been progressively getting worse. I took my girl who was really vomiting and defecating nonstop to the vet the next morning. I spent $500 on tests with nothing found. This included x-rays, a pancreatic and regular blood test panel. The doctor gave her subcutaneous water and recommended human baby food. I went home and separated her from my other two to keep watch. At that time, I realized my other girl also had diarrhea. At any rate, I then saw this site and got really scared. I decided to be safe. I will not feed them Max cat anymore. Luckily, all got better within two days and have been fine ever since I went back to Science Diet.
I am not sure if there is a correlation using this food, but I would really watch. I feel so unsure about this wet. I won't use the remaining cans nor will I put them on the street for strays because I am very nervous about it. I will probably write the manufacturer for a refund and see how that goes. I believe they had mostly turkey and giblets, but also think they had some chicken and lamb formula and had thrown out the empty cans. I felt it my duty to add to this site because I think anyone who uses this wet food should watch their cats like a hawk and take them off if there are any problems whatsoever. I have been a kitty owner for over 20 years and never have had a situation like this before.

He was a puker and could clear a room with SBDs, but we thought nothing of it. We didn't ask for an autopsy with regard to the liver. It may or may not be related, but we're putting two large beautiful dogs down in the span of three years. However, our 10-year-old female (my princess) is dying at present. Although her spirits are good and she is doing well with her treatment, her liver is gone. She apparently had a liver spell a few years back, perhaps that is when we think her damage started. She is diagnosed with advanced cirrhosis of the liver. We have spent in thousands, but her spirits are great. When we can get her to eat, she responds very well to her new diet and treatments.
We have shopped around and tried so many different things, and I have spent more than one night awake with her when she struggles. We're lucky we can afford to do this at this time. I feel for all those who can't. Both dogs ate Nutro Dry Lamb and Rice dry dog food exclusively during their time with us. Nothing is going to bring Zeus back. I write this through tears and a broken heart. My 7-year-old (one month shy of 8 years) white Labrador, Nikko, is dead because of Nutro Natural Choice dog food. It never occurred to me until it was too late. He died within 3 weeks of eating this new stuff, folks. We realized something was wrong when he would eat his food then drink and drink like a mad dog. Having him drink so much sounded odd at first. Then I asked my husband what food he bought. My husband said the same dog food we always get him; however, the label/packaging was different. After a week of eating this food with the new label and drinking water like crazy, he just started to vomit. Everything he ate and drank was coming up.
The second week, his hair was falling out by the handful. I am fully aware that Labs shed but not like this. He didn't really eat much but still drank a lot. We tried to feed him carrots and lettuce which is a treat for him, but no go, he vomited that up as well. We scheduled an appointment with the vet for the next week and that was great because she is hard to get an appointment with.
We rarely feed our dogs table food. When my Coton de Tulear, Ambi, was pregnant, my vet suggested we feed her boiled chicken. Well, Nikko got into that bowl and that was it. He loved it. But we never really gave him chicken often. By this time, we tried to mix his food with boiled chicken just so he would have something in his stomach. That night he ate it. Whew, it was great he ate something, but an hour later it all came up.
When we made it to the vet, she immediately said, "Something doesn't look right with him." It had only been 2 weeks since the new bag of food. She took blood, urine and stool samples and then we were told that he had diabetes, liver and kidney issues and his system was shutting down. She wanted to take more tests to see what else the problem was. We couldn't afford to let him stay overnight having already spent $797 for the vet bill (and that was a discount), so the vet put him on Hills Prescription Diet I/D food just so he would eat something. Yea, that came vomiting up too.
Four days later we took him back to the vet and he lost 8 pounds. That's four days later, eight pounds! Two days later he was dead. That was December 7, 2012, 3 days ago. It was one month away from his 8th birthday. Not four weeks ago, Nikko was arguing with the mailman, chasing his little sister, Ambi, around the house and was a husking healthy dog. He died 32 pounds underweight with his sister sitting by his side. What makes this even worse is my 16-year-old daughter came home from school, opened the front door and saw Nikko lying there first.
All my dogs ate were Nutro Rice and Lamb, Sweet Potatoes and Venison and the Senior blend. I researched this food when they were puppies. I fed them this food so they would have a healthy life. We had him for less than 8 years. That's not a long life to me, not for a healthy dog. Please, people, spread the word. This company is destroying our pets, our furry family. We thought we were doing the right thing by buying this overpriced dog food to find that it was killing them. Please talk to your friends about this. I don't want anyone to go through what we went through. We are devastated! So is everyone that met him. He was a great dog. I am so angry and I need the pain to go away! So sorry for the long review - I can't even see what I'm typing anymore. I hope I've made sense to all who read this. Just look at my big boy.

I have a 5-year-old girl Beagle, 6-year-old boy Beagle and a 5-month-old Lab. They were all on Blue Buffalo and everything was fine. Around the middle of November, I was at Petsmart and a Nutro rep or something started telling me how great Nutro was and went through a big spiel. It worked. I switched all of them to Nutro Natural Choice Large Breed Puppy & Lamb and Rice. The first week, I noticed that they were not eating like they normally did and I thought they were maybe depressed. The girl was peeing in the house which was driving me crazy. She wasn't pooping. They weren't eating the food and my Lab was breathing really heavy and they had a weird smell. It was like a sweet, tarry, musty smell. I can't describe it but it was making me sick.
The Beagles were anxious all the time and pacing the wood floors all day long and circling around tables. All day and most of the night, it was tick, tick, tick, tick non-stop. They had never done anything like this before. They were always calm and mellow. By the second week, I had to stand there and tell them to eat, over and over and they wouldn't do it, so I would mix gravy or hamburger in the food. On Wednesday, I went to Petsmart to get anxiety medicine and grabbed Nutro Crunch Peanut Butter Treats. It was about 12:30 am and I decided to give them some treats. They looked so miserable I just wanted them to be happy again. I gave them 6 or 7 treats that night. They finally went to sleep on their bed. At about 1:00 pm, I was lying on the couch, trying to fall asleep and it looked liked my girl Beagle flew up and over the other Beagle and hit the floor. He jumped up and ran and peed on the floor. She was lying on her side, stiff as a board. Her eyes were open but she was frozen and she was foaming at the mouth.
I just started screaming for my husband. The whole thing was scary. He came out and was lying by her. I was trying to put cool washcloths on her and it lasted about 10 minutes and she finally came to and started growling and then she got really hyper and it seemed like she was really happy, if that makes sense. I looked up her symptoms online and it looked like she had a seizure. Well, she fell asleep on the couch and I decided to take her to vet in the morning. About 1 hour later, there was another thump. She fell off the couch and was on the floor doing the same thing. It lasted a couple of minutes, but seemed like forever and when it stopped, she was hyper again. There was also some weird dark stuff on the floor, it didn't look like diarrhea but more like water with coffee grounds in it. I gave her vanilla ice cream, made sure she ate some hamburger and all that. We went to the vet the next morning, got some blood work and I wasn't even thinking about the dog food.
I searched through the whole house, inside and out to see if there was something she could have gotten into that could have caused this or if I could find any bugs, anything that could explain this but found nothing. I found some articles that said rosemary extract is a neurotoxin and causes seizures in cats and small dogs and large dogs, have adverse effects and they continue to absorb the ingredient and neurological damage continues. This ingredient was in all the Nutro food, so naturally I was pissed. I couldn't find a number for the company. It only allowed an email, so I did and then I found all this stuff about Nutro on the internet. I was and still am shocked and I am seriously pissed off. I got the company number from Petsmart and called. The call rep was talking to me like I was stupid and said she has been in the veterinary business for 20 years, which to me, in the business does not a vet make, but anyways she said it is not harmful.
They bring pets to work and give them food and treats all day and all the people who write the blogs get paid every time someone goes to their site. It was a joke and you could tell she was reading from a probably well-rehearsed script. I did ask her if she could guarantee me 100% that their product didn't cause my dogs seizure and she did, 100%, but did and said they received no complaints about their products which is crazy, because they are all over the Facebook page and send the same message for all complaints. I am sure everyone has read it. I returned everything I could and dumped the rest. I was told to keep a small amount of each for tests, which I did. Everything is finally back to normal since they have been off the food. Right now, I consider myself lucky compared to most and find that this is outrageous. How do you compensate someone for killing or damaging their pet? You can't, and it's obvious they don't care anyway. I am telling Cesar Millan. Maybe he will be able to help stop them.

We were feeding our 9-1/2-year-old German Shepherd Science Diet for Older Dogs. A lady at PetCo raved about Nutro Natural Choice Dog food for Senior dogs and said that it would make him feel young again because it had glucosamine and chondroitin in it, as well as other good things found in premium dog foods. We'd read that Nutro food had caused these sorts of problems with dogs, but we were very skeptical thinking that maybe the people who wrote the reviews were angry people and blamed Nutro for their dog's issues. We decided to try it. First bag - Our dog loved it. He gobbled up his food and always looked for more. His coat got very shiny and there was a pep in his step that he probably hadn't seen for a long time.
Second bag - It was more of the same. He always ate everything. He got nice and lean. Third bag - All of a sudden, one night he jumped up in the middle of the night and darted towards the bedroom door. He piddled his way to the back door and finally burst outside. We thought he just drank too much. The next few days, he looked like he had a doggy stroke. His left eye quit blinking. He drooled nasty mucus on the left side. He tilted his head and couldn't hold it up straight. He got lethargic and stumbled around the house, his left ear flopped over. He continued to bolt up in the middle of the night and wanted to go outside. He lost his energy and his coat started getting very dull. We took him to the vet and they thought he might have an infection so they gave us antibiotics, which didn't work.
We changed back to Science Diet and our Shepherd miraculously has gotten better. He is definitely not 100% but he holds his head up straight again, has quit drooling and he doesn't stumble when he walks anymore. Thankfully, we changed foods in time or we may have been another unfortunate dog owner who had to bury their dog. Heed the reviews if you love your dog. Nutro is very high priced and it's like playing Russian Roulette with your dog's life.

I have had rotties for 20 years and always fed the Nutro large breed. Recently, I switched my 18-month-old from the Nutro puppy to the Nutro large breed. The bag said "new formula". Sad to say, I didn't do my research because I had always fed it and have never had any issues. If you've read any of the posts above and/or other websites, you'll know what happened next. My story is the exact same as all the others who are having problems. My hyper, happy puppy started vomiting, had diarrhea, weight loss, lethargy and she was refusing her kibble but eating anything else you put in front of her. I know sometimes in Canada, certain foods have different formulas and with Canada's stricter laws, I thought this would always be a good choice of food. Wow was I wrong. Thank God my dog only ate half of an 18kg bag before I discovered all the websites. I told my vet that I thought it was the food and they just said, "There is no recall on Nutro."
It cost me $500 for blood and fecal that all came back negative. Still had no answer. I talked to my retailer and she informed me that a vast majority of the Nutro products are being returned to her store because her customers were complaining about sick pets. The only change in my dog's life was the new formula of Nutro large breed! I switched immediately to Legacy chicken. Made in Canada. My baby is back to her old self after a month! As I look back at the dates on the posts above, I can't believe how long this has been going on! Certainly, thousands of people who are having the same issues with their pets can't be wrong? Even my dog knew that something was wrong with the food. Why is this still going on!

I purchased this dog food two days ago, two days! I was excited at first because my dog really seemed to love it. I came home the first day after he'd been eating it to vomit in my bedroom. I've had my dog for almost two years and the only time he's vomited was when I made him for eating something he shouldn't have. I found it very odd, but thought it was just a one time thing. This evening, I came home and he has now vomited a second time on my bed! The only thing that has changed in his routine is the food. I also noticed that his stool went from being dark and firm to soft and tan in color, almost diarrhea-like. I will be taking this food back, and I refuse to ever purchase this brand again. It's stamped with a Made in the USA label. Why are you people making a product that is literally making animals sick?! I'm beyond upset and am damn right furious!

Sick dogs from bad dog food - My 2 terriers are now getting sick because of the change in Nutro dog food. My 12-year old is constantly vomiting and urinated in the house (he has never in his life) because of his heavy convulsing. A $330 vet bill and still no answer other than a rehydration IV and meds to control vomiting. Now my 6 years old refuses to eat her food too. She never refuses her food. They eventually have been eating it because they are hungry, but now reading the other complaints makes me realize the cause - Nutro dog food. Why is nothing being done?

I started feeding Nutro Natural Choice Senior Chicken and Rice canned dog food to my senior toy poodle. She had intestinal cramping and diarrhea and started creeping off with her tail between her legs, hunched over and hiding under the bed. This occurred for two weeks. She was tested for parasites twice and both tests were negative. Two days ago, I switched over to Nutro Natural Choice for Sensitive Skin and Stomach and the problem seems to have resolved. Today, the PCR lab results for intracellular pathogens came back positive for overgrowth of Clostridium Perfringens. I don't know whether the Nutro Natural Choice Senior Chicken and Rice canned food was responsible for the diarrhea and cramping, but the inception of symptoms coincided with starting it, and resolution of the symptoms coincided with stopping it.
If a representative sample of people report problems with the aforementioned Senior food, it should be investigated. The batch number on the bottom of the cans: "Best by 08-15-20 S 233ESN (or is it H?) SC0211:21-N (or is it H?) SD. I hope someone looks into this. Our pets are precious to us. Also, it's best for the company to correct problems or it will suffer by word of mouth. I'm thinking of defecting to another brand altogether due to the bad experience.

My dog started Nutro new and improved for large breed dogs. She would consistently vomit, and we took her to the vet. The vet gave her a steroid shot to stop the vomiting. We brought her home, and she continued to vomit. She became lethargic and weak. We brought her back, and the vet took blood work, which resulted in our dog having acute pancreatitis - which we believe was due to the Nutro new and improved dog food. It was only after switching to that food did our dog become sick. She had none of these symptoms prior to switching her food. Our dog died on Thanksgiving morning 2012, and I believe it is the Nutro food that caused my dog to become ill.

We fed our English Bulldog the lamb and rice formula for puppies, then we switched to adult as he got older. Angus would constantly vomit his food, but he did continue to eat it. We lost him at age 5 from sudden renal failure, and it coincided with Nutro's massive pet food recall. I read so many complaints about others who bought this food for their dogs with similar symptoms and sometimes death. One day, he was fine; and then the next, the vet said there was nothing we could do. I have written the company but heard nothing in response. Towards the end, Angus refused to eat. I believe the food is what made him sick over time and do not think it was a coincidence. I would encourage you all to look up the facts about Nutro's recall and see for yourself. This company should no longer be selling food. Do not buy any of their products. Trust me.

We have fed our bulldog Nutro Max Lamb & Rice for almost 7 years without a problem. Since the first day of feeding the new formula, our dog has been sick; she's been vomiting, urinating frequently, has been very thirsty, had loose to very loose stools, was lethargic, etc. Blood tests showed an abnormal liver reading but not enough to do anything. She has also had 2 seizures and developed a mast cell tumor (not saying that's related, but just in case). She has lost weight and doesn't ever want to eat the food when I give it to her; I have had to mix rice with it. Today I switched brands to see if she improves and will not use this product again.

I work a police K-9 German Shepherd. He is currently 7.5 years old. I started working when he was 1.5 years old and he has been with me ever since and has had great health. When I first got him, he was on another brand of dog food. I noticed that he constantly had an infection in one of his ears. After consulting my vet, she suggested it could be a food allergy and suggested that I try a different brand of food. So I researched, talked to other K-9 handlers, family and friends and heard good things about Nutro. So I switched to the Lamb and Rice Large Breed formula. After about a month the ear infection was gone, his stools were normal and consistent, and he had great health and energy. Recently I noticed the "New and Improved" writing on the bag. I noticed that the food looked different than before, smelled different than before, and was shaped different.
Since he has been on the "New and Improved" formula of the Lamb and Rice, we have experienced health troubles. He began with having a hard time passing stools, would get diarrhea, would vomit, and would have the urge to go to the bathroom many, many more times throughout the day. His lips and gums have swollen and he is constantly licking his paws and I have noticed sores on two of them. I took him to the vet and they put him on antibiotics. This has not cured the problem. At this point they cannot find any medical reasoning for his symptoms. The only thing that has changed in his life is the food being "New and Improved." My next step is to discontinue feeding him Nutro to see if that solves his issues. Reading some of the reviews on this page, I see that many others have had the same issue. I am extremely disappointed and angry with the changes that have caused my partner's health to be compromised.

Tuesday morning, I rushed my 3 1/2-year-old pit bull/lab mix to the vet after she had been up all night vomiting. They did blood work and all was normal, so we decided to do X-rays; and barium after the X-rays weren't definitive in a diagnosis. The vet found what he thought was a blockage, and we decided to go forward with surgery. When he opened her up, he said her intestinal track and lymph nodes were extremely inflamed, and that investigating the intestines, he didn't find an actual blockage. She stayed in the hospital for 2 more days after the day of surgery because she refused to eat and wasn't taking medication orally. Thursday of the same week, both of my other dogs (a rottie mix and another pit bull mix) started vomiting excessively. I rushed both of them to the hospital, and they gave IV fluids and anti-nausea medication. The vet told me to toss that food. It is the only thing that has been different. I will never purchase another Nutro product again. That food almost killed my dogs, and I put one of them through surgery due to this poison! Will Nutro refund me for almost $2,000 of vet bills? And what if the dogs didn't get better? What then?

Only today did I realize it was affecting both girls which I thought suspicious. After reading so many accounts of other pets made ill by this food, I have decided to discontinue feeding them any Nutro product. We previously experienced strange effects from the senior mix, which included runny eyes. None of my dogs has ever had that before Nutro. My senior Beagle developed an unusual condition of her nails where the quick turned dark red along with runny eyes and constant scratching and sensitivity about the ears. It's just been non-stop lately. I just don't have any confidence anymore and I am very nervous about making another bad choice. I am just so thankful that I decided to check the internet, which led me here.

I worked in high-end pet stores for years back in high school and college when Nutro was the new, best food on the market. I recommended this food to many happy pet owners. Many years later, my wife and I got two Pugs and have fed them Nutro Chicken & Rice for the last 6 years. We even stayed with Nutro when they evidently were purchased by a larger company and when there were claims of bad canned food that hurt or killed pets. But the "new" formula will be the end of Nutro for our dogs. Luckily, we have not had illness (yet), but our dogs have had bad stools, horrible gas and had little energy. It's sad to see a company and brand I believed in so much go down the drain.
