I’ve been feeding our dogs (now 1 dog, the other was almost 13 and that’s old for a great Pyrenees) and all 3 of our cats (2 now as the 14 yr old was switched as much as didn’t want to science diet renal help for her kidneys) for over a year, probably closer to 2 years. I’ve had no issues other than finding out my Maine coon mix cat might be allergic to chicken. From what I’ve read a lot the negative comments are from owners who didn’t transition their pets slowly into the new food. The rest do appear to be a mystery. I’m sad so many have lost their pets, but having worked in a pet retail store, if the food was really the culprit, there would be a recall involving Nutro. I have not heard of one in the year and a half I’ve worked at my store, nor have I heard about complaints from customers.

We have been purchasing Nutro Brand Lamb Meal and Rice Formula for years. Recently, I noted that our local store was only carrying something new called Lamb Meal and BROWN rice Formula. I bought it figuring it should be ok. Our 8 year old Black Lab has always done well on this Nutro dog food. The first night we fed her this dog food, she vomited and vomited and vomited. Our poor dog has been so sick for the last 5 days and we finally figured out it must be the dog food. We took her to the vet today, X-rays and blood work revealed nothing. After reading the other reviews on this site, I see we are not the only ones experiencing this. We won't be feeding her this food anymore because she won't even eat it at this point. We will never buy this dog food again and I hope people can get the word out that this dog food has something wrong with it.

I have a 19 month old golden retriever named, Charley. About a month ago, he started vomiting and having diarrhea. We took him to the vet and got X-rays, fluids under the skin and given antibiotics. We started to transition from chicken and rice to Nutro Ultra. Once the transition reached past 50%, the symptoms started again. The vet repeated X-rays, fluids and got blood work. All of his tests came back normal and was placed on ID (canned). Again, when the transition reached past 50% he got sick again. We met with a specialist who thinks that the food is the issue, since he is doing so well on ID. Our vet advised us to throw away all of the Nutro Ultra food, as that is the likely culprit for the illness. It is a shame, because he did so well on it, all of his life, which makes me wonder if they changed the formula, because there are too many similar cases out there. After a month and over $2,000 in vet bills, we will NOT be buying Nutro food.

I have feed Nutro large breed puppy and Nutro large breed to several GSD's without one single problem over the years. All of my Shepherds have lived at least 12 1/2 years to over 15 years. The 12 1/2 year old one is still alive. No hip problems, skin problems, stomach problems. Now have my dogs had upset stomachs, vomited, had colitis??? Of course but not due to this product. I was on here as part of researching Blue Buffalo Wilderness Large Breed Puppy as a possible change or to mix in with in Nutro for a GSD puppy I am picking up soon. At first I was shocked to see the negative reviews so being some what suspicious in nature. I started to check other brands and WOW THEY WERE ALL BAD. Every brand from the More expensive like BB, Nutro, Eukenuba, etc were just as bad as the grocery store brands on here. EVERY DOG FOOD IS KILLING DOGS ACCORDING TO THE REVIEWS.
Are some products bad for your dog? Yes of course. But dogs get sick, like people do, due to viruses, bacterial infections or other things they get into....animals, plants, chemicals, other sick animals excrement etc. Use these reviews as part of your process but other sites like dog food advisor, vet sites or even the reviews of these brands of pet store sites will give you another resource to make a decision. Nothing against some of the people on here but it seems like every one wanted to blame it on something tangible and not factual. If your dog tolerated this food well for months or years then the cause is most likely something else!!!! I have and will continue to highly recommend Nutro Products. Sorry Folks but they are awesome.

I was feeding my dog (small poodle mix) the dry food, Nutro Adult - Small Kibble (pink bag with a terrier on it). At first she was eating the food but then after some time she would just sit there at the bowl. I would tell her to eat and she would eat some but then she would just walk away and eat more later. After a while, it got to a point where she didn't want to eat it at all. Then, she started vomiting every now and then. That turned into every night. The same time of the night, she would vomit. She was also very lethargic and just laying around, panting more than ever (as if she was hot) and also shaking (as if she was cold), excessive use to go outside and urinate (every couple hours), etc.
So I STOPPED feeding her the food completely. For 3 days, I gave her nothing but white rice. No treats, nothing just rice. I then changed to Nature's Select and her stomach seems to be better but there are still symptoms remaining. I have sent a complaint directly to the FDA and think everyone should do the same. I am very upset and do not even have the funds to get proper treatment. I will never purchase this food again as I have Googled and read reviews of past occurrences from prior years.

I'm from Burlington, NC originally - now in Wake County. Wonder if we got some of the same shipment /batch from the company? My Doberman (and service dog) is having kidney issues. So worried.
Reviewed Nov. 19, 2013
I switched my service dog to this brand and have used about half a large bag. My dog has become incontinent, is excessively thirsty, and is urinating in the house. She just turned 3 less than a month ago, is completely trained - as I indicated also works as my service dog. I took her to the vet and her urine shows no infection. Before testing for kidney failure we decided to try something for incontinence, although she is young and has had no problem until a week or so ago, when she became so thirsty. I am wondering if this food is tainted, but can find no recent recall. As of tomorrow she will be taken off the food and given only food I prepare for her for a while. I am praying she will heal and recover as not only she my helper and my companion - she holds my heart in her hand.
I am disabled and elderly, and can not obtain another service dog due to waiting time and related expense. I also am not able to expend the time to receive one from a school as I'm unable to be up for extended times. I also am not able to train another myself due to worsening health issues and age. I am also a wheelchair user and in need of knee replacement also. This is not only harmful to me should I lose my helper, but it breaks my heart to see her so uncomfortable. I pray I can halt whatever is happening. She had no problems until I began feeding her this food a few weeks ago.

In February, we adopted a 7-week-old American Foxhound. Within weeks, he started having seizures, so we rushed him to the emergency vet where they informed us he had hook worms and a severe infection in his intestines. He is now almost 11 months old, and has not had a seizure since around 6 months old. I work at a pet store, and knew that I wanted him on Blue Buffalo. However due to his belly issues, the vet said we should switch because he was constantly having loose stools. He has been on Nutro Natural Choice Large Breed puppy for nearly 8 or 9 months, and at first he would gobble the entire bowl up as soon as we would put it down for him.
Starting in July we noticed that he was itching severely, even though he gets his flea/tick/worm medicine monthly. My first reaction was to think it was the food, however our vet told us that it was a ragweed allergy and to give him Benadryl, which gave him no relief. After a few weeks of that, I took him back in demanding that it had to be something else, and that's when the vet prescribed him an antibiotic and a steroid for his skin (he has small red bumps on his belly, and had made spots so raw they were bleeding). My puppy has been completely potty trained since around 3 months old, even when in his cage for hours while we are at work. He never goes in the house.
While on the medicines we would wake up to him peeing everywhere! Imagine a 65-pound puppy in a daze, legs locked, standing over you peeing while you are in bed. I knew that something wasn't right. He also has a decreased appetite. There are many days where we can only get him to eat one bowl of food, and that can take him almost all day to get through. After reading some of these reviews, it seems more prevalent to me that it is most likely the food. Has anyone else experience extreme itching while using this food? I am at my wits' end and looking for other vets so that we can get this fixed. I am also switching his food back to Blue Buffalo, considering we have cleared up his intestine/worm issue. I think he will do better on it.

We have been feeding our 17-month-old GSD Nutro High Endurance for 4 months. In the beginning he loved the food eating it every time we put it down for him. Then this weekend, we came home to find a large amount of undigested food on the floor that he had thrown up. Ever since he has been very lethargic, not eating anything, initially drinking a lot of water. We took him to the vet today and have him on antibiotics and are awaiting the results of blood work. Then while doing some research tonight, I came across these threads and it seems more than a coincidence that other people have had and are still having similar issues. We have decided to stop feeding him this dog food even if it is not the cause of his illness due to the doubt it has set in my mind that this is not a good dog food. Good luck to everyone.

Below is my original post. I switched dog food the same day. It has been a little under 1 year and the pugs are doing much better. Honestly no problems at all. For all the readers who feel it's not the dog food... well I don't believe in consequences anymore.
I have a 6-year-old female pug and a 3-year-old male pug. I've been feeding them Nutro Adult (chicken, rice and oatmeal formula) for about 4 months. Let me first remind you, I've had no issues with either of these dogs until now. Over the past 2 months, I've gone through so much. The 3-year-old male first experienced diarrhea. I took him to the vet and a couple antibiotics later, we were back to road to health. Then shortly after, he started urinating blood. No stones in x-ray, but I'm waiting a month to do another lab test. Then about 3 weeks ago, he had anal glands protruding out of his rectum. He has also gotten ear infections in both ears. This was all in the past 2-3 months.
The 6-year-old female pug also had her first anal gland issue a few weeks ago (exact same thing). Now she has an ear infection, vomiting 2-3 times a day of mostly bile. Tonight was the first night she did not eat. The vet yesterday gave me some medicine for the nauseousness and said she should feel better in a day. Well she is getting worse. I honestly started thinking I was doing something wrong because both dogs are getting sick all of a sudden. Then I thought it was the dog treats. So tonight, I decided to Google the brand of dog food. I'm absolutely in shock, but a little relieved to know something is causing this. I'm changing food ASAP!

Our German Sheppard was rushed to the vet 24 hours after my last post, with bloody stool, lots of blood. ER Vet did not think it was the food. Even though, we said our other dog was showing symptoms, she thought it was something rotten that he ate. So we came home. Our other dog seemed better so we fed her the food again. This morning 2nd dog now has bloody stool. Headed to the vet this morning. It must be, has to be the food. The vet said that with the serial number from the bag we can call to see if it has a problem. Cooking all dog food for now. As both dogs have food issues anyway, I have to make 2 separate foods for them.

I have 2 dogs, one about 6 1/2, the other a Pit/Boxer mix that 12 1/2. I been feeding them Nutro Senior (chicken and brown rice) for maybe 10 months or year. We almost lost Bailey the elder dog a couple of weeks ago. If it wasn't for a wonder, caring vet. And he was so sick it scared her. Reading these complaints, it's stuff I've been dealing with for 10 months, that we attributed to age. The upset stomach, we had him on Pro-Pectalin and Sucralfate for months, along with yogurt.
About 3 weeks ago Bailey became sick, somewhat lethargic. That was Wednesday, exactly 3 weeks ago. On Saturday we rushed him into the Vet. Totally lethargic and anemic, his red blood count dropped from about 50 to 18. Went through almost all testing described already online, liver, kidney, heart. We knew his auto immune system was haywire. She was convinced it was tick illness, ran the full panel, nothing. We looked at a possible cancer, maybe his spleen. On Monday he collapsed, right in front of the Cardiologist, so he had a complete cardio workup done. Nothing, again.
By 10AM Monday, we, a team of Vets all talk and discussed whether to transport him to TUFT ICU. They weren't sure he was going to survive the day. He survived. So now, week later were still confused what’s going on. Treat him with Amoxitab and then Micocycline hoping that it’s tick related. By the following Saturday he collapsed again. Another day at the vet, IV this time. Stopped all medications, began a stick regiment of LOTS OF TLC, starting with cooking him all meals. BLY, yes there was vomiting. So, ground beef and white rice then ground beef with mash potatoes.
So now a week later, much better, not 100% but definitely turned the corner. Monday's blood was 42, but his plates were off, so she want to continue a low dose of Prednisone every other day for a while. So here we are today, I've begun introducing dog food to him. I can tell you it's not NUTRO. But watching him very closely. My Vet is still scared with the long term issues. She's going to try and contact them to find out what the problem is. This is totally unacceptable. Somebody needs to step up.

In the beginning of Sept. 2013, we began feeding our 8 year old Beagle Nutro Naturals Lite. Despite having no problems with her previous food, Purina Beneful, we had heard several complaints about it and thought that by switching to the Natural Choice dog food that we were making a good decision. How wrong we were...
In the beginning of October 2013, after a few weeks on the food, our Beagle's demeanor had changed. Her energy had diminished and she was spending more time in bed. On October 13th and 14th, she began vomiting a lot. At that point, we became very concerned about how lethargic she was and the amount of vomit and took her to the vets where they administered an antibiotic. We were advised to watch her and follow up in two days and continue antibiotics at home. On October 15th, I came home to find her extremely lethargic and the whites of her eyes were yellow. I immediately called the vet and took her in where they hospitalized her and gave her IV antibiotic treatments and blood tests. The vet kept asking me if she could have eaten anything toxic like a mushroom but we just did not see her eat anything out of the norm (And with young children at home, all cleaners are locked up and not accessible!).
The next day, the results of her blood tests showed that her liver enzymes were at 500 vs 100 and that her gallbladder numbers were at 3,000 vs 150 (Not a typo - yes 3,000!) However, after just 24 hours of IV treatments and antibiotics, her demeanor was starting to improve and the whites of her eyes were returning to normal. Again we were asked if she could have eaten anything toxic to which I replied no. We were given the news that she could come home but would need to continue antibiotics until we could get her liver and gallbladder numbers back to normal.
After we were able to bring her home, we racked our brains with the constant question - could she have eaten anything toxic? Her food was the LAST thing I thought it could be until on a whim I decided to do a Google search on Nutro Naturals and came across this site. Reading through the thousands of reviews, seeing many dogs with very similar symptoms, there is no doubt in my mind that this food was the culprit behind her failing liver and gallbladder.
After a week of antibiotics and specialized food, her blood work was improving. Her liver enzymes were almost back to normal and her gallbladder was at 450 as opposed to 3,000. However, that is still 3x the norm, so she has continued antibiotics for an additional week and more blood work was tested today.
I am extremely grateful for our vets and that it appears we were able to save her life without permanent damage. However, I am saddened for all the dog owners out there that lost their pet to this food. And I am outraged that there can be this many complaints and yet the FDA has not recalled this product. Coincidences happen in life but not that commonly - not to the tune of 1,200 plus complaints on the Consumer Affairs website. Even though my dog appears to be on the mend, I will be contacting the company and the FDA to file a complaint. If this food has impacted your pet, please do the same.

About a week ago, I opened a new bag of dog food and began feeding my dogs as normal. We have used this dog food for years as it was the only thing our German Shepherd could eat that did not make him sick. That morning we awoke to lots of diarrhea, listlessness, drinking lots of water, and he had stomach cramps it appeared. I went to the internet for help, after 4 days of the spontaneous diarrhea . So I began making his food boiled chicken and rice, plus giving him plain yogurt. This morning I was awakened by my other dog, she had diarrhea, now, listless, cramping. She is a special needs dog, she is on medication that already affects her kidneys, so anything else could be very dangerous for her. I have stopped feeding her the food as of tonight and have no plans to feed it to any of my pets.

Our dog has had a sensitive stomach since we got her from a rescue 6 years ago. We finally found a food that didn't make her sick, Nutro Lamb and Rice. She has been doing well on that until recently she has been vomiting every day and licking her bottom a lot. She also does this when her stomach is upset. I like other responders have ruled out everything else so it has to be her food. So, etching in the formula has changed. She is vomiting a green frothy bile usually every morning or during the night and burps a lot. She also has had urinary incontinence lately and we thought she had a UTI but the urine came back negative. Now it is sounding like a lot of other responders. We have worked with her for a couple of weeks on this since she has always had a sensitive stomach but tonight we decided it has to be the food. I am taking her to our vet tomorrow. Right now all she has is the vomiting. She still eats and plays so hopefully we got her soon enough. That food is going in the garbage and Nutro will be hearing from me!

I have had my 2 dogs on Nutro since day one. They used to love eating it and wasted no time. We have always bought the biggest bag and only purchase dog food about every 2-3 months. The last bag we bought lasted about 4 months and the only reason was, because my dogs refused to eat. I thought they were depressed because we had just moved into a new house. I kept having to mix boiled chicken with their food and even still they would only eat little bit of the lamb and rice dry food.
I noticed that both of my dogs would vomit bile or undigested food (hours after eating so it shouldn't be undigested) at least twice a day. They both started having trouble going to the bathroom and we noticed blood in their stool. We thought we would try a different food to see if they would eat so we switched to Simply Nourish. I took her to the vet right away where they told me she have a fever of 104.6. She had also gained 2 pounds since last week when she was vaccinated.
I can only attribute this to the food she has been eating. I never give her table scraps and she is never in contact with the trash. Every time she goes outside she is watched.. Her blood work showed that she has pancreatitis.. Warn your friends and call your local news media. ABC, Turner Broadcasting and more advertise for NUTRO so even getting anything in you local newspaper is a challenge. Over a month ago she started vomiting a frothy yellow color vomit. And she had suddenly started seizuring. She has never had seizures before in her life. I took her on emergency to the vet. He did a ton of extensive and expensive tests. Turns out her liver enzymes were through the roof. He put her on seizure meds, Denmarin (to clear the liver) and a Laxative syrup to help clear her system of toxins.
Thankfully, a month later her recent liver tests came out great. But she has to stay on all these meds the rest of her life. I believe there is something toxic in a batch of Nutro Natural Choice. An investigation should be launched immediately. And a recall should be started too. I pray for all the dogs out there that have yet to get the bad batch of Nutro Natural Choice Dog Food. It only happened once or twice a week, but these are dogs very seldom vomited before. We discussed this with our vet and he said exactly what a previous reviewer said, that it was probably caused by acid reflex on an empty stomach. The Nutro had been recommended by our puppy trainer (we raise puppies for Canine Companions for Independence), but after reviewing the various posts on this site and reading having the exact problems, something has definitely changed in the Nutro formula. My Shih Tzu Eli passed this evening and my Shorkie Tzu, Coco, is still in hospital. I am crying as I write this. Both have eaten Nutro Ultra small breed for two years. Late last week, we opened a new bag and it has gone downhill from there. Add in that the vet we were seeing did not take appropriate action and after several office visits this week, IV fluids and blood work for both, we have concluded that it must be the dog food. I am going to have it tested to leave no doubt. Eli was so precious. He was a rescue a couple of years ago and has been a blessing. We will miss him. I hope Coco makes it through. I can't lose her too.

We just bought a new bag 10 days ago and after a few days all four of our Maltese were sick with symptoms of diarrhea and vomiting, very unusual for them and all of them at one time???? Now, that's a bit much, so we knew there had to be a common factor. The only thing we can contribute it to is the new bag of Nutro dog food. We stopped feeding it to them today when we ran across all the complaints. So hopefully we will have a positive outcome. I am so sorry for those who didn't.

I switched my puppy to Nutro after we adopted him from a shelter two months ago. He has continued to have diarrhea and vomits at least once a day. It's sometimes his food which doesn't seem to be breaking down as it's whole or it's just stomach acid. I thought this was the best choice for my dog so I've been changing other things, like no treats, feeding less at a time but after reading all these other complaints, I'm returning my bag I just purchased and seeing what other options there are. If I have more health problems with my puppy Nutro will be hearing from me.

My 7 yr old Yorkie has been vomiting since Saturday, with bloody stools. Have spent almost 900 dollars trying to get him better. But after reading these complaints, I may have found the problem! He had been eating Nutro Naturals toy breed kibble, got sick, had been without dog food, just boiled chicken and rice. Seemed better after he got back from vet yesterday. Fed him Nutro canned turkey and rice sensitive stomach food, started with the vomiting and lethargy again this morning. I am so sorry to hear about the other fur babies having the same symptoms, even unto death. I think the company should take this seriously. Can't have this many different breeds in different states with the same problems, not a coincidence!

I adopted a Lab mix puppy and switched her onto Nutro Natural Choice Lamb and Rice a few weeks after bringing her home. She started vomiting bile in the mornings and sometimes in the afternoons. I took her to the vet and was told she may have acid reflux or just be vomiting because her stomach was empty. I fed her smaller meals more often. She was still vomiting bile so she went on antacids. The medication did not help.
After watching my dog wretch and vomit almost daily for almost a year, I again consulted a vet. The vet wanted to do several tests, an endoscopy and a biopsy. This would have cost several thousand dollars. I decided to try a different diet first. I switched her onto another name brand food. Within a couple of weeks, she was no longer vomiting bile. She has now been vomit free for two months.
When I was taking her to the veterinarian for this problem, I told them I was feeding Nutro food. They said it was a great food and it was not the problem. I believe they were wrong. Something in this food is causing dogs to vomit bile. Obviously, not all dogs are affected. Nutro has thousands of happy customers. However, a small percent (including myself) had a bad experience.
I contacted Nutro with my story. At first it seemed they would be helpful but they quickly went on the defensive. They kept going on about their quality ingredients and their quality control. I do not doubt the quality of their ingredients. I doubt their research on how their ingredients affect all dogs. When I asked the agent if there has been any other cases like this and what their resolutions were, she declined to answer. She did not seem concerned about my situation because I had already switched my dog onto another brand food. I believe in her mind I was already lost as a customer so she was not open to helping me.
Consumers need to be informed. Something in Nutro dog food is causing a small percent of dogs to be ill. Research needs to be done to find out what it is. Veterinarians need to be informed that these symptoms can be related to Nutro dog food. I do not want any dogs to endure what my puppy had to go through.

I have a two year old pug and two other small dogs. I bought a new bag of this food about a week ago from Petsmart. All dogs have been on this food for about 4 years without any problems. The pug started throwing up yellow, semi-digested food about three hours after eating this food. He also was moping. I stopped the food, gave him rice over the next few days, and he improved. Last night I again tried the Nutro food - he has now thrown up twice, is having chills, and looks miserable.
Another one of the dogs has developed loose stools. Is a virus or some infection that they have passed among themselves? Or is it the food? I think my level of suspicion is highest for the food. I will stop using it. I have had it with corporate America, mass produced dog food, and all the crap that gets put in the food to maximize profits. I am going to start making their own food at home as of today. Enough is enough. I also wonder if the epidemic of angiosarcoma in dogs is somehow tied to this manufactured food. There seems to be an inordinate number of dogs dying from this lethal cancer.

She had never had seizures before. I gradually changed her over to all Nutro and noticed she just wasn't that interested in eating her food...seemed rather lethargic...not really like her normal self. When I took her to the vet, they said she had elevated liver enzymes which indicated some kind of toxicity.
She had been on JUST Nutro dog food for 3 weeks and she had two more seizures...within 15 hours of one another. Her next trip to the vet revealed normal blood work (so it COULD be epilepsy...right???) and she was started on phenobarbital. I have since read that rosemary oil/extract or rosemary of any form is TOXIC to pets (AND to humans in large quantities!!). It is a neurotoxin and can do great damage to the brain, causing seizures. The Nutro formula I had been feeding contains...you guessed it, ROSEMARY!!! I freaked and am going tonight to buy something different.

This morning, he had bloody diarrhea. Since I'm a nurse, I knew those weren't good signs and symptoms and I didn't want to take a chance to wait it out. I took him to the vet. Thank God all his blood tests came back normal and there's no pancreatitis. The vet said it has to be the food I bought. That's the only thing he eats. He prescribed him antibiotics and famotidine. Plus he got injections of fluids.
I can't believe this is happening. You hear about it on the news and hope to think it doesn't happen to your pet! Pets are not like kids. They can't talk to tell you where it hurts! If you see symptoms, you should take your pet to the vet to get them rehydrated, especially in smaller dogs. I will contact Nutro very soon! And as for Petco, I was able to return the food, but they will continue to sell it because they haven't heard any bad thing about the brand. I recently bought a bad batch of Nutro Max Puppy food. I have been feeding my 2 Papillons Nutro for months without incident. I love Nutro brand and used it for years with my Yorkie, who was a picky eater. I never had a bad experience until recently. I bought a bag a week ago and fed my dogs for 2 days before my female was vomiting and had diarrhea. I thought maybe she got a hold of something on our walks or maybe my little girl gave her something. She remained interested in our walks and was still active and interested in cuddling, but continued to have diarrhea for a couple days. I was still offering her the Nutro Max puppy and plenty of water and Pedialyte.
She started recovering after I stopped feeding her. I read about fasting her to clear the diarrhea. My male developed the same symptoms as my female was recovering. I stopped his food immediately and fast them both for 24 hours, then fed only boiled chicken and rice (bland meal). After 3 days of the several small chicken and rice meals several times per day, they both recovered.
I wasn't sure if they got a parasite of some sort or if it could have been something they ate. So, I fed my male the Nutro Max again once and his next bowel movement was diarrhea again. After consulting a Vet I was pretty certain it was a bad batch of food and not a parasite of any sort. I started the chicken and rice immediately again and my male's next bowel movement was normal again.
I called PetSmart and they of course offered to exchange the food but insisted that they had no other returns and wasn't aware of an issue or they would have pulled the Nutro from the shelves immediately. After my conversation with PetSmart, I decided to investigate further myself and searched "bad batch of Nutro dog food" and stumbled upon these 1476 complaints. Needless to say... Then about 1.5 years later, our three-year-old female Chinese Crested Hairless started losing weight at a drastic rate. She had diarrhea and was weak and ill. She was never diagnosed with cancer because after hundreds of dollars we ran out of money. The vet was pretty sure it was pancreatic cancer. After he started refusing to eat and trying to add extra meals and once he became skinny to where it looked unhealthy we took him in. They found a huge mass and have assumed it is cancer. They said the testing will be very expensive.
We had to surrender him to the SPCA yesterday. We are hoping they can convince the manager to save him and because we surrendered him, he will be adopted out. I even noticed a change in the look and feel of his coat.
However, I recently noticed, he has started shedding...a lot!! Yorkies do not shed! And he seems to have a few small bumps on his paws that seem to be itching him, and I’ve seen a few on his stomach. Now after reading things on the web, and seeing this site, I think I will give him a nice oatmeal bath and go find a diff food to see if the shedding stops and the bumps go away. Like those trying to dispute or quash the coincidences, my dogs, these two and two others had been on this food for 13 years before this change and never had an issue. I was a huge proponent for Nutro. Now, I wouldn't feed it to a rat.
As my husband suggested, it could very well be that Nutro has taken heed to these posts and corrected their formula. I believe that Nutro, having denied entertaining such an idea as their product making 1300+ dogs sick, might have even discovered the problem, corrected it and just not make it public, because that would be admitting guilt and Lord knows they were deleting any negative posts from their FB page right away. I can't imagine that they would ever open the door to lawsuits from all those dogs who appeared to get sick upon ingesting their product.
It would be interesting if people could post the expiry dates of their most current bags on this site. And all those who refuse to believe the complainers, take a look at yours--maybe you just missed the period of time where Nutro may be have been the cause of illness/death. Just an idea--I could be wrong.

I take these horrible reviews about Nutro with a grain of salt. If you read them closely, they do not prove that food was the cause of illness in the pets. Most of the reviews are full of emotion and anger from someone who lost a pet or had to pay vet bills. It's understandable to be upset when a pet falls ill or dies, but putting the blame on a dog food that millions of people feed with great success is just silly.
Instead of convincing yourself that the scientifically proven, AAFCO-approved, carefully formulated and tested dog food is killing your pets, how about consider any one of the other thousands of things it could be? Topical pesticides for fleas/ticks, antifreeze dripped on the garage floor, food from the garbage, poisonous plants/fungus from the backyard, fertilizers, cleaning products, allergic reactions, not to mention bacterial infections, viruses, genetic autoimmune diseases, or OLD AGE. Many of these stories are about dogs that are 10+ years old. Organ failure is unfortunately common in senior dogs, and there are hundreds of causes for it.
Furthermore, vomiting does not mean that the food is poisonous. I rotate the brands I feed my 3 dogs for variety. Sometimes I'll try a dog food brand that simply doesn't agree with them, resulting in loose stools and diarrhea. That doesn't mean the food is horrible or toxic...just that it isn't right for them specifically. Nutro is one brand that they tolerate very well and are always eager to eat. But if your dog doesn't like it or it causes digestive upset, then simply feed something else! There's no point in fabricating elaborate, unproven theories as to how Nutro is trying to kill our pets . My dogs are ages 10, 5, and 2 years old, and they are extremely healthy, happy dogs.

Could your dogs have had these problems before you even put them on Nutro & just didn't know about it? Sometimes certain breeds have different medical problems regardless of the dog food. I know dogs can die if a person gives them onions, chocolate, grapes or other human foods that can be toxic to them, but there's no way any kind of a premium dog food could cause a dog to die. We had FDA officials at our home that took samples of the food, and their lab testings showed high levels of zinc and copper, just for starters. Be thankful your dog is alive. This food is poison and should be removed from the market. We made a formal complaint in May of 2009 with Nutro. I contacted them several times in regards to the loss of our dog, and all they wanted to do is collect all the food and bills I had, all originals only, of course. I was not too quick to hand over anything to them, as it seemed to me they wanted to cover up everything.
I agreed to fax them all my vet bills and reports, AND the FDA lab reports. You want to know what resolve we got for the loss of our much loved pet? NOTHING. Haven't heard from Nutro since. Our dog was perfectly healthy for 6 wonderful years, and I have all the vet reports from his first vet visit as a puppy up to our last one... from the Emergency Vet in May 2009 when he went into massive kidney and liver failure. I still feel horrible for feeding my dog this god awful food. Good luck, and don't say you weren't warned.

My Lab of 11 years old became ill the end of May 2013. She was having diarrhea, not wanting to eat her food, vomiting at night, and hind leg shakiness. We've had her on this product since 2004. So, we did not expect it to be because of her food. She continued to decline. She became weaker and didn't want to be active at all. Lethargic. We took her into the hospital and her liver functions, which were normal the first of May 2013, were now off the charts by July 2013. We tried everything we knew except change her food. She died on July 9, 2013.
On July 14, 2013 we had to rush our 6-year-old Labradoodle to the emergency vet hospital. She was lethargic, had diarrhea, and would not eat. They treated her for beginning pancreatitis. I changed her food on Monday, July, 15, 2013 to Blue Basics Regular. She ate a bowl and a half like she was starving. Her stools returned to normal. Her energy was revived. I am having the Nutro tested. There is something wrong, but, I do not know what it is? We are testing, but, really have no idea what we need to be looking for? Please help! Thank You!

I have a 2 year young American Bulldog, Morley. Morley has had a bad stomach ever since we have had her (8 weeks old). She has been on several brands of dog food. The only one that every worked well with her was the Nutro Venison Meal and Brown Rice. We had her on this for about a year and a half. She then started acting weird, not wanting to eat, throwing up, etc. Based on the reviews on this site, I took her off the Nutro and tried a few other brands with her. She still had these issues.
I decided to buy the Nutro Venison again and give it a try - she is doing WONDERFULLY. Eats like a champ, begs for her food. After many tests, blood work, etc.... we believe Mo has Irritable Bowel. This had nothing to do with the food. I know they say dogs don't "taste" the same way we do - as their taste buds are on the tips of their tongues, so it's more of a smell and texture thing with them. Let me tell you - Morley can taste! She will beg and run and do tricks for the Nutro Venison. All other foods we have tried, she couldn't care less and it's a struggle getting her to eat.
I'm wondering if some people on this forum are too quick to blame the food when that's really not the case at all. My heart breaks for those who have lost their treasured pets, however blaming Nutro won't bring them back. Could it be a bad bag of food? Sure. Could it be a number of other things, older pet, sick pet, Irritable Bowel, Pancreatitis, Cushings? It sure could. Just my 2 cents....in my opinion Nutro Venison is a God send!!

I cannot believe how many people have complained within just last few weeks. I also have had my boxer on Nutro for 8 years. He suddenly stopped wanting to eat, that was a first for him. He always ate his food in the morning and at night. I went back to Petco to ask what was wrong with Nutro food and they told me they had a new formula and bring it back if any problems. SO 3 weeks later after my poor dog has been throwing up and feeling very lethargic and thirsty I knew something was wrong. So that's when I decided to go on this site!
Lo and behold look at all these other complaints and poor dogs dying and getting sick.... Something needs to be done as soon as possible. I went right down to the store and complained and told them to get it off their shelf. Told the manager to look up this site....... WELL let's pray and hope my dog doesn't die because of this negligence!!!!!!!

I started feeding my two golden retrievers Nutro max chicken and rice adult food about two months ago. On the second bag of food, they began to have bloody diarrhea to the point where my female would get up and there would be a pool of blood under and behind her. We took her to the vet and she gave her some meds. We changed her food back to Science Diet and she got better within a few days. I found two containers of the mixed Science Diet and Nutro that we had used the two weeks prior and mixed it in with our Science Diet, so I would not waste money.
IMMEDIATELY, that night, my female woke up with bloody diarrhea AND, and my male acted like he didn’t want to eat the next morning. It was only after discussing me mixing in the food from two weeks before that we realized it was the food... then I began searching on the Internet for any recall information. What do I have to do to sign a petition to get this food off the market or join a class action lawsuit against this company. My male has to pee constantly now and realize it is connected to this food. I will be up all night with them. Both, again, due to urgent diarrhea. I am hoping this will be the end of it and there will be no long term per agent effects but if there are, I want in on the lawsuit. Thank you.

Recently my two dogs, a Black Lab mix (5) and a Yellow-Lab and Husky mix (3), haven't been eating much. This has been going on for some time and usually they are enthusiastic eaters. After looking up the symptoms and talking to my vet, we attributed it to heat and them not wanting to eat because it is hot. Then I came home one day. There was runny stool all over their kennel, like they couldn't hold it in; that never happens. Then I woke up to frantic cries from my older dog and she had poop, runny stool, in my bedroom as well; this also never happens anymore. They have not been eating their food since.
When I went to go buy more food last week I noticed that not only are you getting less food in the Nutro bags, but they are also more expensive. So I started looking up if the recipe has changed and maybe that's why they don't like it anymore. Thankfully everyone has posted about this food and I am going to stop feeding it to them immediately! I hope it hasn't caused any permanent damage to their bodies.

My one-year-old golden retriever has been eating this food for a couple months. We spent all night in the ER and almost $1,000 in bills. I originally thought it was a reaction to flea medicine, however the vet called poison control and was told her 104.5 fever and severe gas was not a side effect of the medicine. They said she ate something bad. The only thing she eats regularly is Nutro dog food. She has been gassy since she started on the food, and as I am reading reviews of other similar symptoms, I am very upset with what I am hearing. Returning the food today!

Nutro Max Lamb and Rice made my dogs sick - especially my English Setter. I normally use Nature's Recipe for my pets, and Nutro Max caught my eye when it was on sale at PetSmart. I compared ingredients, and it appeared satisfactory. I switched their foods gradually. (I switched from Blue Buffalo to Nature's Recipe a year before that and had no problems.) Within the first week of use, I noticed my English Setter would vomit after eating.
Thinking it might be coincidental, I tried it for a few more weeks after. Her general disposition became slightly more lethargic and coat became dull. The vomiting kept occurring. After reading the many similar complaints (some worse) I decided to take the remaining food back to PetSmart for a refund. I also filed a complaint with Nutro. I advise others to avoid this food. We are back to our previous food, and the dogs are feeling much healthier and happier.

This is when I started researching this dog food. HOW many more pets have to suffer or die from this food before something is done? Needless to say, this BRAND should be banned! My dog is 1 1/2 years. I switched him to Nutro Adult Max. Just after 3 small feedings, I had a very, very sick dog!!! I decided to switch his food because he just seemed not to care for his other food that much. At Pet Depot, they told me how great this food was, so I mixed it with his other food just 3 times. On July 4 I fed my dog like I always do in the morning (30% of the new Nutro mixed with old food). He acted fine until 4 hours later, and then he started vomiting. In a matter of 10 minutes, he had gotten sick 9 times (a huge amount especially for a 30 pound dog). He would not eat or drink. Very lethargic. Then another round of vomiting and through out the night.
I talked to my vet, told me what to do. They said must be the food. I got online then saw all of these awful reviews of the same thing happening to other people's pets. Today he is acting a lot better, but it was very awful. I felt I poisoned my dog with Nutro. Please do not feed your animal this brand. Something is very wrong with the food.

I have been a loyal Nutro customer for 7 years, even through all the changes to the bag designs and confusion. A week ago, I started my boys on a new bag of Nutro Natural Choice Senior mixed with a new bag of Nutro Natural Choice Adult Small Bites. They have eaten this food for the longest time with this blend and have been happy, healthy until last week. Shortly after starting the new batch, one of them stopped really eating and the second one, who never says no to food, didn't seem as eager. Then, three nights ago, my 5-year-old dog had really soft poop. I went upstairs for a moment and found my kitchen and living room in what appeared to be a crime scene condition. Puddles of blood were everywhere! I checked my dogs and once I identified which one it was, inspected his anus area to find it was blood soaked but no sign of anal sac rupture. I cleaned the dog and then my floors only to step upstairs and come back to a repeat of blood and diarrhea.
The following morning, my dog still had diarrhea and blood puddles when he went to the bathroom along with lethargy and a fever. I bagged their poo and dropped it for fecal exam at vet. Later that night, my dogs were acting afraid of their food and the second dog started to have blood in his poop and it was much softer than usual. The vet says that no Giardia, worms or parasites were found in the fecal exam. While the first dog has returned energy levels and tonight's poop is diarrhea-like but blood-free, the second dog is still having bloody poop.
We have changed their diet to remove the Nutro dog food and been cooking at home, and while poop issue isn't resolved, they are getting better. I returned the food to the PetSmart in Irvine and they offered to file a report on my behalf. I have had the 10-year-old dog for 8 years and the 5-year-old for his entire life and never has anything like this happened. It scares me to read so many other dogs getting sick from the food and yet no recall. After all the issues with labeling and now my dogs becoming so ill and refusing to eat their dog food, I can't help but be done as a customer. At $50 per bag, one would think this shouldn't happen.

We thought he was just slowing down from age until he was lethargic most of the time. After a few days of opening a brand new bag of NUTRO NATURAL CHOICE Wholesome Essentials Dog Food Adult Chicken, Whole Brown Rice & Oatmeal Formula, our dog became extremely ill with diarrhea and, then, had a seizure on 6/10/13. The only thing different in our dog's life was this NUTRO dog food so we stopped feeding it to him. He is slowly getting better with antibiotics and a new brand of dog food prescribed by our vet. We feel terrible that we fed him this toxic dog food and wish we had figured it out sooner when he was acting differently. He is starting to prance around and play again after several weeks of lying around. Beware of this brand of dog food if you love your pet!! He was a very happy, active dog until about a few months ago, when I thought he was just getting older and calming down. Then he started to get lethargic, panting more, stool went from yellow to orange. I thought about the food he was on and called PetSmart to see if there was a recall on Nutro food. They did not care. I then put him on a bland diet (rice and boiled chicken). I also noticed the same day that his gums were pale and called the vet, took him in and his CBC count was 17.
I just had a complete physical done on him in February 2013 and his CBC count was 47. I had to take him to a hospital. I have written about my dog Maddy in the past. I can't believe this last guy online, David from New York, saying that the food is not to blame. Go ahead and keep feeding your dog this food and anything made by Nutro and eventually it is going to make them real sick and like some die. Ever since she's gotten sick from this food which she was on for 2 years prior, she has never been the same. She has seizures about 2 or more a month, and this last one was real bad. She can't control going to the bathroom anymore, and she has times when she goes in the house #2. When she was real sick and I took her to the Vet, he said that her liver was elevated very high. I am going to take her in for her check-up next week and have it checked again because of the seizures. They are caused from the liver problems and I would bet she won't get better and eventually I will lose her.
She just turned 12 and she is otherwise very healthy. She was fine before I gave her Nutro Chicken and Rice Senior. Anyone that feeds their dog this food is risking their dog’s life. I told the FDA and wrote a complaint many months ago on here. They said they would look into it and didn't do a thing. I feel so bad for Maddy because she has suffered so! I hope to save all of the rest of the dogs so they don't have to go through what Maddy has been through. She also had pancreatic 3 times before I found out it was the food. Stop feeding this food to your dogs! I feel the reason why they don't take this dog food out of the stores is because there are big shot people that own this company and have a lot of money invested in it. They don't care and money talks. The poor dogs suffer and will keep suffering until they get this food off the shelves.

SATISFIED OVERALL, UNTIL THIS LATEST BATCH. Like many others whose reviews I read the other day, I've been feeding my dog the Nutro Lamb and Rice or Chicken and Barley dry food, with great success for about 3 years. I bought a new 15lb bag on Saturday (it's Wed. now), began using it Sunday and read those reviews purely by accident, looking for their other varieties on Monday. He was fine so far after two days on this batch. Others had spoken of using it for years and now suddenly, in just the last few months, people are talking about the dog having diarrhea and throwing up yellow bile along with the food shortly after starting a new batch or even putting up with it for a long, long time. (I'm pretty sure bile is GREEN, not YELLOW; that the yellow is stomach juices. But I only know that human bile is green.)
I wrote a guest review this past Monday, 6/10, after 1-1/2 days on this batch saying no problem yet and I'm glad to be warned there may be something wrong with the batch and will watch him carefully. WELL, this morning, he threw up a fair amount of yellow bile with some of last night's food in it. After 15 hours, there should be no food left in the stomach, but again, I know the human digestive tract timeframe. It took 3 days on this batch, but it really does seem as though something is irritating his bile duct or gall bladder (or making him suddenly produce too much bile, or doing God knows what) and irritating the surrounding intestinal structures. I'm just glad he doesn't eat that much and likes white rice and white bread, which actually did help a lot on the one occasion, years ago, when he did have an intestinal bug. There was NO DIARRHEA today, and I'm hoping to make sure it doesn't happen by giving him plain rice in small doses, and some Pepto Bismol, which helped in the past.
So I'm doing what one contributor suggested: no more of this batch. Just plain bland bread, which has always been good for him, and white rice and water, and will continue this for several days. I'd like to know if the company has figured this out. I'll try calling. I called the store where I got this but they've had no complaints yet. But they said they'll give me something that they "know" has caused no problems (after I've settled his stomach for a few days). It's only one incident but the coincidence is pretty amazing. I hate to switch from what has worked well for so long, but if another food works well, I'll use it. I thank this site for being a sounding board and a warning or I'd never have known it may very well be this batch of Nutro food! At least, I have time to stop it before it continues. I'll see if the store can return the bag to Nutro for a refund. On the phone, the store said yes, these things happen but I'm the first one to call. They'll be giving me something else for free, after I've calmed his intestines down for a couple of days with bland stuff in small quantities.
Thank goodness, he only eats small quantities anyway or who knows? I hope there's no real damage. He needs to heal, obviously. Thank goodness, he's behaving normally and perky and I seem to be in time to keep him from getting really sick, maybe even causing damage to digestive structures. He is still acting fine now that he purged himself of whatever it was. He did look for a while like his stomach was bothering him, just after throwing up. Makes sense. Bile has a pH of 8.3, a big difference from pH 2.0 in the stomach. Anyone would feel lousy. I've no idea how a food can do this. He eats no garbage and nothing from outside, and there's nothing in here that would affect him. Thank you to all who posted and to the keepers of this website! I'll post again when I've gotten him back to a steady normal state for at least 3 days, and hope the new food, whatever it is, works well and he can stick with it. Thank you all! If those lawyers want to contact me, please do so, if only for informational purposes. I'm not looking to sue though I feel Nutro owes me $35 for a bad batch of food that made him sick and caused me a lot of cleaning. But exchange of information is critical. I'm so glad you folks are out there.

These recent accounts are getting me scared. My dog has never had a problem with Nutro. He was on another brand (something "Essentials" I think) from age 2 until about 3 years ago when demand for it fell and we couldn't get it, and switched to Nutro Chicken and Barley or Lamb and Rice (dry). He also practically demands pieces of white bread as a treat all the time (I try to keep it to something a little healthier, but he never gets much). There was never a problem with the Nutro. For a short time, he had occasional diarrhea, which was puzzling, but our vet figured out it was dental in nature: aggressive bacteria that didn't belong in his mouth (his breath was getting bad too) was getting down to his lower gut and displacing the normal flora down there, giving him mild but consistent diarrhea.
A little normal dental work and boom! He was right back to normal, everyday every time, going on two straight years now. The Nutro agrees with him in all ways. But now that I see all these recent cases, I can't help wondering if there's a problem the company has to find. I just started him on a new bag yesterday - 4 meals so far - and he's still just fine. I'll have to keep a close eye on him, though, now that I've read these very recent horror stories, and be prepared. It's good to have a forum like this, just to be aware and forewarned of potential problems.

Coincidentally, I had put down some ant poison (although I placed it as the instructions said, in cupboards and closets where pets and children can't get to it). Still I wasn't sure of the cause so I removed the ant poison and waited to see if there would be a change. NO CHANGE - my dogs are frisky, eating well, sleeping well, but they throw up bile (and occasionally the dog food) daily and continue to try to eat foliage for their sour stomachs. I highly suspect it is their dog food. I switched to another brand and will know within a few days if that was the issue. If so, I will be filing a complaint with the FDA and Nutro. If not, I will also follow up on the Nutro website to be fair. For now, this is a warning to be concerned if your dog is eating Nutro products and is throwing up but otherwise seems okay.

When I brought this website to her attention, she said it was an unregulated blog site with false information... hmmm. Well, I don't know about all the other posts, but my post is real and factual. I have also filed a complaint with the FDA. They asked me to save the food for testing. When I mentioned this to Nutro, she got quite mean and insisted that I release the medical records to Nutro.

We have been feeding our boxers Nutro for a little over a year. We started a new bag of Nutro Natural Choice Lamb and Rice on Wednesday. On Friday, our 6-year-old boxer did not eat breakfast or dinner and was a bit lethargic. On Saturday morning, there were pink spots of urine on the floor. By Saturday night, we were at the emergency vet and they had to put him down. His bladder was the size of a grapefruit and he was going into kidney failure. The vet said this was a very rare acute case. I am going out now to buy a different brand of food! I emailed Nutro and called PetSmart. PetSmart did not care.

I recently purchased a 15lb bag of Nutro Natural Choice Lite Diet Weight Loss food for my 2-4 year old Beabulls... what a mistake! Within weeks, 3/4 of the bag, they slowly got worse; and I chalked it off as just being overweight. My smaller one grew a tumor on his front paw, walked with a limp, constantly wants to eat grass and throw up, and licks nonstop all over his body. The bigger one got more and more lethargic to where he was bumping into things and falling on the floor with no strength in his legs, panting excessively and just sleeps nonstop. They both quit eating the food and that is when I decided to investigate it - WOW, I feel so bad that I have been giving them this crap that made them so sick!! After reading these last night, I immediately threw out the Nutro and started them on cooked beef and rice (which they gobbled down). I am hoping that the damage that has been done goes away and they bounce back... waiting and praying!

One of my dogs have even developed pancreatitis. I found that out today (after a vet bill of over $200). The next three days are critical for her health. Our Boston has been eating Nutro Natural since we got him in 2004. He's never had a major problem with it, but being a Boston, his digestive system is a little goofy at times. Back in February, I went to get him some more food and noticed that all the packaging and formulas were completely different. Homer tends to pack on the pounds, so we've had him on Nutro Natural Light for the last two years with no problem, but that formula was changed to something completely different. But trusting Nutro, we got a big bag as always. He was fine for about two weeks, then started vomiting.
Again, Boston's can have digestive issues at times, so at first it wasn't a big deal. Then he started vomiting every other day, then every day before we stopped him on that food. I checked online for recalls, but there was nothing, and Nutro was still getting rave reviews, this was back in mid-March. We kept with Nutro Natural, but tried a sensitive stomach formula. That seemed to be good for him, and we kept to small bags for the first two rounds, then finally got a big bag. He vomited once or twice before we got the big bag, but again, we didn't chalk it up to anything major. For the past two or three weeks, he has been vomiting probably once every other day at first, then every day again, and his #2's have been extremely soft. So I made a vet's appointment, knowing they would just charge me $100 to say to put him on a bland diet.
The day before the appointment, he ate his food in the morning, then refused to eat again until the next morning, the day of the appointment, and then only a little of the food. This is extremely weird for him since he is a dog that will eat everything in sight normally. We took him to the vet, got some Flagyl, and the bland diet, and he started eating the bland diet with no problems, and hasn't been vomiting at all since then, so that's the good thing. But the problems haven't gone away yet. Before we took him to the vet, he was having problems going #2 and when he did, it was very soft, and immediately before going he had a little diarrhea, and there was blood in it. This morning, he still had a little blood in his diarrhea, and I have a feeling he might have a UTI, or kidney problem because there was blood in his urine.
We're hoping that things aren't too late for him, but it's not looking good after this morning, and now I'm just hoping the docs can do something to help him before it gets any worse. I can't say for sure that the food is the problem, but there are too many food-related issues here for me to ignore. I'm a biologist, and I've had one or two epidemiology courses, and there are some pretty loud alarm bells going off in my head, especially after seeing that everyone else here is describing almost the exact same course of illness as my dog has had. If you're questioning whether the food is the reason why your dog is sick, and all the symptoms are the same as every other post on this forum, then please, for your dog's sake, put two and two together, and get him or her off this junk before it kills them!

I see there are many complaints about Nutro Pet Foods. My dogs have been eating Nutro from the beginning of their lives since 1999. I am a Pug breeder and have never had any problems with this product. When I wean a litter, I start them on Nutro Puppy Kibble and recommend to their new owners this product. The first complaint I read about the two Poodles sounds to me like they had a sickness. Without saying, giving canned food to a puppy without introducing it slowly into its diet first is irresponsible and it's the same with the owner's older dog. I think you should remove this complaint immediately. Any sick dog usually recovers after being fed chicken and rice, and because she didn't introduce Nutro to her dogs again, you cannot say that it was the food that made them ill!

I figured I had might as well do the same for my 7-year old dog. They are both poodles. The puppy had already been on the kibble but suddenly stopped eating it so I fed her the canned food. She developed bloody soft stools intermittently with constipation and vomiting. She was breathing shallowly and quickly and could not sit or lay down for any length of time. She had to wander all around. She also drank copious amounts of water and peed every continuously throughout the day. Her urine was clear like water.
When she came to me, she appeared to be very healthy. My other dog had similar symptoms. After about four or five days, I had enough and just grabbed everything in sight, went back to Petco and exchanged it for another Holistic brand. In the meantime, I started feeding plain chicken and rice alternately with organic beef and rice and there was an immediate improvement. Now almost two weeks later, they are completely recovered. I have been feeding human food and the new Holistic food interchangeably while waiting for a bunch of supplements to come in the mail. I intend to prepare my own dog food according to a book that touts the Natural Diet. As soon as the supplements arrive, my dogs will never be fed commercial dog food again. At 1 year, she developed seizures, and we had her on potassium bromide because the vet diagnosed it as a genetic disorder (she also routinely threw up yellow bile). At 7 years, we decided to switch her food to Origen. Within a month, she stopped having any seizures and has been seizure free (and yellow bile vomiting free), and is now 15 years old. I do not know what exactly sparked her seizures, but it was definitely in the Nutro. I only wish someone had told me to try switching her food years before.

Thank you so much for posting all the info regarding other pet owners experiencing these issues. My 2-year-old pit bull has eaten Nutro Lamb and Rice for about a year and a half. She has had problems being sluggish and lethargic. Recently she is limping, back leg weakness and instability. We have had her to the vet and checked to no avail. I felt as if I were going crazy. She should be an active, lively dog at 2 years old. She acts as if she is 15. I recently transitioned to Nutro venison and this is where I discovered your information. She threw up immediately after eating. I thought initially she was eating too fast, but after the third attempt I got online and found these complaints.
It all makes sense now. I stopped feeding her Nutro and gave her plain rice. For the last 2 feedings she has not thrown up at all. Will she heal from damage already done to her back legs? I am devastated that I have been slowly poisoning my sweet girl. I went to the pet supermarket where I first got her and they said to feed her Nutro Lamb and Rice. I assumed I was feeding a top of the line dog food to her. How wrong I was. I went back to the store to tell them of my findings and they insisted I should not be swayed by a few accounts of illness in dogs due to this food. I let them know that it was far more than a few and that they really should check it out to see that the FDA is now involved.
I am now going to call Nutro themselves and document my experience. Please anyone else dealing with the same thing, make phone calls, post warnings wherever you can. It was an overnight change after I took away the Nutro and put him on chicken and rice. Since then, I've fed him the new food and he loves it. He's never left any uneaten and seems to inhale it. I can't prove Nutro was to blame, but the only thing that changed between his lethargy and his current energetic state is that I took Nutro away. I don't know if it was harming him in the way people are reporting below, but he definitely was refusing to eat it for some reason, and he's never been a picky dog.

I have been looking for a good dog food for my 1-year old lab mix that I rescued in January. I previously bought a small bag of Nutro Natural Choice Chicken and Rice formula when I first got her and was not happy with it simply because it was larger pellets and the bag seemed to go too quickly. After trying several other brands, I recently spoke with a woman at Petland who once again recommended Nutro Natural Choice after I told her about my dog having soft stools and eating poop constantly. I tried it again and a day after feeding her the Natural Choice, she was having terrible yellow diarrhea. I proceeded to feed her a bland diet of brown rice.
The next day, she vomited in the morning. I decided to begin mixing back in the Nutro dog food with the rice when her stools hardened up again because I figured she had just eaten something outside. Later that day, she was having more yellow diarrhea and my dog became lethargic and not quite acting herself. I had a feeling something was wrong. I researched her food and found this forum along with others that complained of their dogs becoming sick after consuming this dog food. I went back to Petland the next morning, complained and asked for my money back. The woman who sold it to me said that they feed their dogs at Petland Nutro.
But when I took back the food saying hopefully their dogs would be able to eat it, the cashier told me that they were actually switching the dog food that they were feeding their dogs. She said that anytime a dog dies of old age or accidental death, they change the food they feed them. I guess these are the guidelines. I am not saying it is necessarily Nutro that is to blame, but when I put all the signs and symptoms together, I would never give my sweet dog that food ever again. I would recommend anyone feeding their dog Nutro that is noticing changes in their dog's behavior and stool patterns to change foods as well. Believe it or not, our dog is improving completely and has a lot more energy after switching to a much less expensive Iams.

My Cocker Spaniel died April 28, 2013. Both of my dogs have been on Nutro lamb dog food since I have gotten them almost seven years ago. Though in January, I brought a bag of Rachel Ray dog food at Walmart because I ran out of Nutro. Two weeks before he died, I started them back on the Nutro. My other dog started puking bile again and breathing hard at night. But Thursday I came home from work and he was acting funny. I went outside with him to go to the bathroom and noticed him peeing blood. He hadn't been eating well for a couple of days, which was not like him at all.
I took him in to ER and they said he had a fever and filled him with fluids and sent us home. Five hours later, I took him back. They said his red count was at 8 and asked if any chance he got in to some D-con. I called all neighbors and nowhere could that have happened. He doesn't wander off anyhow. Through the whole weekend in the vet hospital, they kept asking me if I was sure he did not get into poison because the stuff they gave to make his blood clot was not working. I actually thought it might have been the Dino he was getting. But my vet researched it and nothing came up. I never dreamt it could be their food.
On Sunday he couldn't hold on any longer. Our other dog refused to eat his dog food all week. They were brothers so I knew he would be depressed; the whole family was and still is. Last night I got online and typed in the Nutro pet food and found this. I am sick to my stomach. I also feed them this food and poisoned our precious dog. Needless to say, I got different food for our other dog today. He wouldn't touch the other stuff all week anyway. I am sure he knew it was poisoning them.

It's sad now to read all these posts. I just buried my 10-yr-old JRT almost 2 weeks ago. We noticed little changes w/ her, like habits changing w/ food and appetite, but thought it was due to older age. I would have never thought about dog food making her sick, because we upgraded from cheaper dog food when she was 9 to Ultra Nutro.
We were at Pet Smart and spoke w/ a sales rep. I don't recall if it was a Nutro rep. Well, we tried that food and everything seemed okay. We even gave her fresh select pet food, to mix in and change it up for her. We bought her 2nd bag, in Jan/Feb 2013, Ultra Nutro senior toy breed dry dog food. I didn't notice right away something was off, because I would put fresh select pet food on top. In less than 2 months, she passed in the night. I was devastated. She just had a checkup in Feb; she was healthy. People were shocked she had died, because they just saw her at the park. I took her everywhere w/ me.
I am crying right now, reading all these entries knowing I was poisoning my dog and didn't know it. My family & I are very sad & angry. I kept the dog food in the pantry. I am calling the number & filing a complaint. The only reason I even found this site, I purchased a second shortie JRT from the same breeder; I was researching her dog food she uses for her dogs. Well, while I’m on Google, I typed in “nutro” and saw recall and stumbled upon this. Thank God, I found this. I am bringing home a beautiful puppy next Friday.
Like she said, a puppy can fill a hole in your heart. She won't replace Princess, but I am looking forward to having a dog come into our family. I hope more people see this and catch it before it's too late. I am really angry. I have friends that have dogs that are way older and eat crappy Ol Roy and they are still living. When I got Brodie (a West Highland Terrier) last summer, he had already been rescued about five times. He came to me with a thick folder of veterinary reports and a huge bag (50 lbs) of Nutro dog food, which his last vet had recommended because the vet thought that if Brodie ate anything with artificial colors, his face would break out and his white fur would discolor. I took that advice and continued feeding Brodie the Nutro until it was gone. I then joined an online Nutro club and got $1 off on two more small bags. But when they were gone, I really could not afford to keep Brodie on Nutro, particularly since he was apparently terminally ill.
His back legs were increasingly paralyzed. He was incontinent and he was increasingly lethargic. When I switched him to a store brand dog food that had no artificial colors, he seemed to rally and he never had a skin breakout or discolored fur. But the paralysis increased and he died at 7PM on January 1, 2013. Now I am haunted by the fear that his five years (at least) of eating exclusively Nutro was the cause of his ever worsening ambulation and continence issues. I know that no dog or cat of mine will ever eat Nutro again, even if they are giving it away on the street corner.

Well, my dogs did well on it for a while. Due to health issues, my senior dog was euthanized and that left me with my young service dog, BBop. He got very sick the week after Bryana Marie went across the Rainbow Bridge. He was vomiting and panting excessively. He also was laying in the praying position. He is a young Miniature Schnauzer who I personally trained as a dual purpose service dog.
I was heartbroken when he kept vomiting off and on for two weeks. We took him to the vet for what maybe pancreatitis. The vet wanted to charge us $500 alone for two blood tests. I said that wasn't in my budget since I'm on fixed income. We treated him as if it was pancreatitis and then put him on Royal Canin GI low-fat food which he became very allergic to since it has both corn and wheat in it. Needless to say, I'm in debt to my vet to the tune of $140, all thanks to a dog food I thought I could trust.
Okay, this morning I contacted Nutro and they were very rude on the phone. They denied that they ever made a 33 lb bag of food and tried to put the blame on me. I have a life outside of being home called a college student. I am also wheelchair bound and don't drive. I depend on public transportation, which when you are a student, your budget winds up going for transportation and anything else that financial aid doesn't cover. All of sudden, she started panting and vomiting in the morning. I wasn't convinced it was the food, due to the fact Nutro has quality ingredients, and she was basically on Nutro her whole life. After coming across this website and noticing that a lot of these negative reviews happened in the last 1 to 2 months, I immediately stopped the food. We had another vet visit today and hopefully she’ll back to normal in the next 48 hours. What's going on Nutro? Why aren't you stepping up to the plate, Nutro, and investigating why so many animals are affected by your food? My heart goes out to those people whose pets suffered more and even passed away due to this company's negligence. It is time for the folks at Nutro to make a formal recall before this continues to happen.

Please call the Food and Drug Administration with complaints. Just venting here is not enough. My dog died from 1 cup of Nutro's Lamb and Rice formula. Everything New & Improved seems to be at fault. It's 888-463-6332. They have only received a few complaints and it will take many before they react. If you call Nutro, they will tell you yours is the first complaint. Many veterinarians will lie to you and prescribe expensive and harmful treatments and ignore food problems, padding their pockets. I called several offices and they said there wasn't a rise in food-based problems a week after my dog died, business as usual even though every person who has fed the new formula had a sick dog.

I am appalled at the lack of concern that Nutro has flippantly decided to take with regard to the numerous complaints that animals have become sick after switching to this new and improved formula in their food. My dog has been eating Nutro small bites for most of her life. When we started giving her the new formula, she has been shaking uncontrollably and is extremely lethargic. She has been perfectly healthy for 9 1/2 years of her life up until switching to the new formula. Why aren't you stepping up to the plate Nutro and investigating why so many animals are gravely ill even to the point of death?

We have a four-year old boxer that has been on Nutro Lamb and Rice adult breed dog food all his adult life and the puppy formula as a pup. We purchased a new bag six days ago and started feeding it to him the next day. Since then, he has had diarrhea, was lethargic and drooling. Then yesterday, he would not touch the food. I found this website thankfully and started him on homemade chicken and rice. He is already feeling better but still lethargic and has runny stools. The bag said "New and Improved". I am still worried about him after reading all these complaints. Something definitely in that food is the culprit. A recall is needed. This is ridiculous.

I have been feeding my lab Nutro Venison for sensitive skin and stomach for 4 years. The last bag of food I purchased had a "New & Improved" stamped on it. The dog consumed about 1/2 of a 30 lb bag and started scratching and biting her tail so much that most of her fur came off. I switched brands and now she is in recovery. I contacted Nutro to ask them for a refund for the 15 lbs of food I have left. They claimed, "We did not change anything in the product." So I posed the question, "Why is the bag stamped with new and improved?" Response, "We removed a few ingredients and added a few other ingredients." I posed another question, "What does your guarantee cover?" Response, "We do not cover allergies." I did not mention allergies to them at all. I just told them she was losing her fur and scratching after consuming the new and improved product and I would like a refund as the food was making my dog sick. Response from Nutro, "We do not cover allergies." Please do not purchase anything related to this company as they will not stand behind their product.

Please anyone that is reading this and has a dog with these symptoms, please stop feeding the Nutro and give your dog chicken and rice to flush out their system! The symptoms are: seizure-like symptoms, glassy eyed stare, back legs couldn't hold up, stiff and painful neck to the touch, blood in the stool, constipated for over 1 week, projectile vomiting and lethargic behavior. After $1,000's of dollars at the vet, she recommended I stop the Nutro food and started her on chicken and brown rice.
Little by little she started improving, thank God. I googled her symptoms and found this site. Thank God, which is why I immediately stopped the food. If I kept on feeding her, I'm positive she would have died. I sincerely hope the Nutro people have a conscience and recall the food before more animals continue to get sick and die!

My dog has been eating the Nutro Ultra Diet food for a while now. He stopped eating and was drinking more than the normal amount of water, so I took him to the vet. She ran a blood test and discovered his liver enzymes were through the roof. They should have been 100 and the chart stops at 1,000. His numbers would not even register (meaning they were over 1,000).
I have already spent over $4,000 in vet bills, test, hospital visits and we are still working on this issue. I can only assume after reading all these posts complaining of the same issues that it was his food. I immediately threw it out. He just had to have a liver biopsy and we are awaiting all the test results to come back. However, it's been 2 months of administering different antibiotics, nausea medication, liver pills and steroids trying to make everything better for him.

My Westie recently passed away after eating the newer version of Natural Choice Chicken and Rice. He ate 1/4 of a 15-lb. bag and stopped eating it. I then switched to Blue Buffalo Duck and he ate that. Then he stopped eating that. I put him on people food - chicken and hamburger with rice and 2 days later, he stopped eating that. Note that he was on Nutro for years and then he ate the new version a month ago. He had bad gas for over a week and then vomited yellow fluid. His poops were soft but not runny. After he was hospitalized with elevated kidney readings, he was given fluids through IV. The next day, he improved so we got to take him home. He had dark green diarrhea and then black. He was vomiting and we brought him back the next day. He passed that evening.

We have fed this food Nutro Lamb and Rice to our dogs for years now. We just had a Chihuahua who turned 10 pass away a week before Christmas... devastated everyone in my family! I saw a post going around on Facebook that Nutro had a recall. I shared it and started thinking maybe I should change the food we feed our beloved fur babies. We also have two other dogs, a French Bulldog and a French Bulldog/Boston Terrier mix. When we started our 12-week-old healthy French Bulldog on this food, she seemed fine at first and seemed to love the food, as when she would eat it, she would inhale it.
This year on Easter we had a very nice day, so I decided to take my Frenchie on a walk. At the end of the walk, just around the block, she started acting weird. Back legs got wobbly and she almost fell over... scared the heck out of me. My very first thought was the heat! Easter is when my puppy started having seizures :( She has had up to 6 of them. I took her to two different vets. I even told the first vet about the food and she doubted that would do this to my dog. So when my puppy did it again and this time for no reason, it wasn’t warm, she wasn’t over exercised... she lost all color to her gums and her little paws too. I was horrified. We just lost our beloved Chihuahua months before. So after that I started looking into this food and reading all of these reviews.
My puppy went to the vet and we had her blood levels tested. Everything came back perfect, but her liver. It was showing high levels. There is no liver damage thus far, thank goodness, and I am hoping that with a food change she will get 100% better and be seizure free! I will say this. We took the food back to the store. I have changed all my dogs' food from this nasty food and since then not one seizure from my puppy! I am printing out all I can find on this and taking it to my vets and to our pet stores... sharing it on Facebook as well. This food is poison for our dog and needs to be pulled ASAP! My Chihuahua died, and this may have helped her. I am very thankful I caught this before my new puppy whom I already love dearly dies from eating something that is supposed to be good for them!
Shame on this company!

My 5-year-old Great Dane and mystery aged rescue Dane have been on Nutro L.I.D. for 4+ years and almost a year respectively. Since the appearance of the "New and Improved" ribbon on the bag, these poor girls have experienced and suffered through horrible digestive issues. They cannot run to the grass fast enough to ease their stomachs (upset, multiple instances of foamy yellow bile and diarrhea or soft discolored stool with traces of blood). I am appalled that The Nutro Company treats their loyal consumers with such egregious disrespect and silence. Perhaps they are waiting for independent testing followed by a class action lawsuit to get their "New & Improved" attention.
