What is Metlife Pet Insurance?

MetLife covers cats and dogs through its flexible, customizable plans. In some states, it also covers exotic pets. MetLife helps pet owners manage the cost of veterinary care. Depending on the plan, MetLife covers a wide range of services for illnesses, emergencies and more.

It also offers services such as holistic care, including acupuncture and chiropractic care. MetLife even covers grief counseling for you if your pet dies. MetLife extends its services to pet owners across the U.S. and does not have any breed or age restrictions.

How does Metlife Pet Insurance work?

MetLife requires an individual application and underwriting review for each pet. After signing up online or by phone, there is a waiting period of 14 days before illness coverage begins. However, accident and preventive care coverage begins the day your policy is activated.

The claims process involves submitting proof of veterinary services, after which MetLife reimburses covered charges according to the plan. Pet owners can appeal claim denials if needed.

Metlife Pet Insurance coverage

MetLife offers comprehensive coverage for various veterinary services, including treatment for illnesses, injuries and emergencies. All plans include a wide range of services, such as hospitalizations, surgeries and diagnostic procedures like X-rays and ultrasounds.

Additionally, MetLife provides coverage for medications, preventive treatments and holistic therapies like acupuncture. By opting for the standard wellness add-on, pet owners can access coverage for routine care, including vaccinations, parasite prevention and genetic testing.

What Metlife Pet Insurance does not cover

MetLife has certain exclusions in its coverage. Preexisting conditions (unless previously covered by certain employer group policies) and cosmetic or elective procedures are not covered. Breeding expenses are not covered except in cases where pregnancy results in illness or injury.

Additionally, the policy does not cover spay or neuter surgery unless you purchase the wellness plan. Other exclusions include microchipping, obedience training, grooming costs, nonprescription food, organ transplants and health or travel certificates. The company also will not cover injuries and illnesses related to working or sporting such as with police or racing dogs.

Metlife Pet Insurance pricing

Because MetLife offers such a wide range of coverage options with add-ons, ConsumerAffairs pulled some quotes to illustrate potential pricing. Pricing varies based on age, breed, location and selected coverages. Multipet family plans share a deductible.

My cat did not have any issues with vomiting before I signed on with MetLife on 10-4-25. The waiting period for illness claims ended on 10-18-25. My cat vomited once during this waiting period and again after the waiting period ended. The vet visit for multiple issues was denied due to “gastroenteritis” as a pre-existing condition. And since then all visits having vomiting as an issue have been denied.

MetLife assigned the diagnosis of “gastroenteritis” to my cat, not the vet. The vet only mentioned vomiting in the clinical notes. I have found out that vomiting in cats can be caused by a variety of factors and is not always due to gastroenteritis. So the vomiting during the waiting period could have been an entirely different issue than later vomiting. Now my cat is being worked up for IBD or lymphoma and I can see that future claims will be denied because of that one vomiting issue during the waiting period. I wanted insurance to be able to give my cat whatever treatment he might need in the future. I’m sorry I didn’t listen to my relatives who had had bad experiences with insurance.

I do not recommend this company. Based on my experience, the company does not consistently act in good faith in the administration of its pet insurance policies.

Upon submission of a claim, coverage is frequently denied based on broad and discretionary interpretations of policy language. Specifically, conditions that were not diagnosed, treated, or documented prior to the policy’s effective date are later characterized as “pre-existing conditions” in order to justify denial of reimbursement.

This approach undermines the reasonable expectations of policyholders and significantly limits the practical value of the coverage. Policyholders continue to pay premiums while legitimate veterinary expenses are denied. I strongly recommend that prospective customers carefully review the policy terms and consider the risk of claim denial before purchasing coverage.

It is my understanding that the company is backed by large institutional investors, such as BlackRock and Vanguard. In my opinion, this financial backing may contribute to the company’s ability to operate with limited accountability to individual policyholders, as potential losses from denied claims appear to be offset by substantial investment support. From a consumer perspective, this creates an imbalance in which the financial risk is effectively shifted to policyholders, while the company remains protected by its capital structure. This further reduces confidence that claims are evaluated primarily based on fairness or the actual medical circumstances of the pet.

I am so disappointed with MetLife. Initially, I thought they were great and that they process claims in a timely manner. When I spoke w/ someone at Customer Experience, I was GIVEN THE WRONG INFORMATION concerning their appeal process. My cat is blind and does have anxiety, so they denied sedation when she had multiple invasive lab work done. I was told that I DID NOT need the vet's signature just for me to sign their appeal form. I followed the instructions given by the MetLife employee (who should have known better than to give me wrong information). The vet had taken so long giving me SOAP notes and she did the same when I sought clarification for the MetLife Appeals dept.

After speaking with another agent, I told her that I would contact and obtain the clarification from the vet, which I did. She knew that and so did the Appeals dept. The Appeals dept. rendered a decision BEFORE I got the clarification/amendment from the vet denying my appeal. THE VET AGREED THAT THE LAB WORK WAS INVASIVE and that she suggests sedation even if an animal does not have pre-ex anxiety but shows signs of fear/aggression while she engaged in the invasive lab work.

I emailed the clarification/amendment to a supervisor at MetLife last week and I am yet to hear back. I did not imagine that the Appeals dept. would not even consider the fact that one of their AGENTS gave me the wrong information and they did failed to wait for the clarification. Now, they are telling me that I have until early Feb. 2026 to get clarification/amendment that I HAVE TO PAY FOR in order for them to reconsider. I should not have to pay! They rendered that decision without waiting even though I consistently contacted them and spoke w/ their supervisor numerous times. This was not right, and they need to do better as to pet parents.

I am submitting this complaint regarding improper billing and failure to resolve an overpayment issue with MetLife Pet Insurance. MetLife Pet Insurance overcharged and withheld funds totaling $540.24, plus an additional $87.63, despite my policy premiums being paid through automatic payroll deductions. My pet insurance payments are deducted directly from my paycheck, and I submitted proof of these deductions after MetLife incorrectly claimed they had not received a payment since September 24, 2025.

That statement is inaccurate. I can see the deductions on my paystubs and the payments posted in the MetLife app. At no point did MetLife notify me of a missing payment, which reflects a failure to communicate a billing issue in a timely manner. I first contacted MetLife about this issue on December 4 and was told it would be resolved within 3 to 5 business days. More than a month has passed with no resolution or meaningful follow-up. On December 5, MetLife withdrew an additional $540.24 even though the policy had already been paid through payroll deductions. MetLife also scheduled further prorated withdrawals of over $500 and another charge of over $300 for January 1, which should never have occurred.

I canceled my policy solely to prevent additional unauthorized withdrawals. MetLife later claimed that canceling the policy made it harder to resolve the issue, despite having my payment documentation. I made repeated attempts to resolve this matter by phone and email and requested to speak with a manager or supervisor but was not provided access. I spoke with multiple representatives, including individuals named John, Amanda, and Monica, none of whom were able to resolve the issue. Follow-up communications consisted of repetitive questions rather than addressing the documented overpayment.

I am requesting a full refund of all overcharged amounts and correction of MetLife’s billing records. This experience has caused me to lose confidence in MetLife Pet Insurance’s billing and customer resolution practices.

MetLife Pet Insurance is a nightmare. I submitted a claim and got denied because the services were classified as 'preventative.' I submitted the invoice and doctor's notes, which included a wellness exam because my cat developed red bumps around the neck and on the head, as well as an FELV vaccine. I know that the vaccine is considered preventative care, so I get that, but how come the exam was classified as preventative care when my cat had an issue? I went back and forth with the rep, but they required additional documents from my vet, and I had to fill out an appeal form—which was ridiculous. They always take your money on time, but when it comes to reimbursement, it took them so long to process, and they always consider stuff as preventative care.

I submitted my claims to MetLife Pet Insurance, they were my first 2 claims ever with their pet insurance and they closed out both with $0 reimbursed. I called and they told me that I was out of the window for reimbursement. The rep was incredibly kind and patient, but the reason, which she was just relaying is simply unacceptable and it's not something I was even aware of. Basically, this is a money pit, they took the money, didn't reimburse, and didn't disclose anything that would change or impact my ability to get money back in the form of reimbursement. My previous pet insurance didn't engage in suspicious behavior like this and I'm disgusted that MetLife would engage in these shady practices. I want my reimbursement money provided and clarity around policies that are NOT consumer friendly.

The worst insurance company. They try to run you and your vet around and finally after months they paid for regular exam only 10% and 5% applied to deductible. I pay them for premium plan with $500 deductible.

My experience with MetLife's Pet Insurance program was nothing short of miserable. As Geek's health issues mounted I'd get paid out my max benefits pretty quickly, and to that end MetLife did the bare minimum. However, as he was nearing the end of his life, they decided to burn bridges with us completely. We were informed that there was a special benefit form with a 1 time benefit to cover end of life expenses for the amount of $500, and when sent the form it looks notably different from the standard claim form. I filled it out while grieving the loss of my best friend (which MetLife would probably say is a cringe thing to say) and assumed I wasn't, at best unfortunately misinformed, and at worst, actively lied to. I was also told that the form needed to be filed before ending my policy, as it would be safer to ensure that it was processed correctly.

The form was filed as soon as I received my receipt for the euthanasia, which was unfortunately almost a week later, but I appreciate that the euthanasia company gave me breathing room before confronting the reality of it all. MetLife then proceeds to drag its feet until two days after charging me for another month's coverage for Geek, who was, in fact, deceased, and then also rejected my claim saying my maximum was reached. Naturally I was disgusted, how do you dangle a carrot in front of a grieving family, and then also steal their wallet before taking away the carrot too? After multiple heated exchanges MetLife at least paid us back for the extra month of coverage because they're not idiots, just soulless and concerned about a lawsuit more than helping people.

They told us, however that we will never be getting paid for that 1 time claim form, which invalidates the purpose of the claim form. There's a major failure of communication, education, and humanity at MetLife, and I would encourage everyone to take their business elsewhere, and everyone working at the company not at the executive level to attempt to salvage their careers and work for any other company as they will undoubtedly be more ethical.

I have had MetLife pet Insurance for a little over a year and I find their coverage itself satisfactory. However, I have had a horrible experience with the premium payment process. Originally, I had to use payroll deduction to obtain an additional discount. My employer and MetLife were never able to truly transfer these funds correctly leading to an overpayment (4x my monthly premium for 3 months). I am no longer with that employer and thought the premium payment issue would resolve however they now have now cannot account for all the premium payments my previous employer sent them and have been charging sporadic amounts that are not equal to my new policy payments.

I have spent countless hours corresponding with them for over a year now and no one can provide answers in customer service, and they do not allow direct communication with the accounting department. Extremely frustrated and disheartened, with their ability to handle, track and reconcile payments. I will likely cancel and go with another company and truly hope this is a one-off situation and other are not struggling like I am!
