What are Banfield Optimum Wellness Plans?

Banfield Optimum Wellness Plans are comprehensive packages designed to provide preventive pet care for dogs and cats. Available exclusively at Banfield Pet Hospitals, these plans cover a range of services, including office visits, vaccinations, diagnostic testing and discounts on additional products and services. OWPs are open to both dogs and cats of all ages and breeds, providing a discounted option for pet owners to ensure their furry companions receive essential wellness care. An OWP is not pet insurance — it does not cover accidents or illnesses.

How do Banfield Optimum Wellness Plans work?

Banfield Optimum Wellness Plans operate in a straightforward way. Pet owners can enroll their pets either by paying a lump sum annually or by opting for monthly payments. Once enrolled, customers can access a range of preventive care services without worrying about deductibles or paying at every visit.

There's typically no waiting period for services, but the pet must have an exam to confirm enrollment within 30 days of sign-up. If a pet requires services outside of the plan, you can pay separately, often with discounts applied based on the OWP. Pet parents can also choose add-ons to cover expenses like parasite control, spay/neuter surgeries and dental cleanings.

Banfield Optimum Wellness Plans coverage

Each Banfield Optimum Wellness Plan includes comprehensive exams, vaccinations, diagnostic testing and fecal exams. It also provides access to virtual office visits and the 24/7 Pet Chat feature, enabling direct consultation with veterinary professionals for immediate pet care advice.

Additionally, every OWP comes with an annual one-on-one pet nutrition coaching session with a trained professional. Opting for the Special Care plan for adult pets extends coverage to include additional services such as routine eye pressure and heart health testing.

What Banfield Optimum Wellness Plans do not cover

An OWP focuses on preventive care for pets, but it does not cover treatments for accidents or illnesses. Incidents such as emergency care, surgical procedures for accidents or treatment for unexpected illnesses are not included in the OWP. However, the OWP provides a discount percentage on most services and products outside the plan.

Banfield Optimum Wellness Plans pricing

Banfield allows customers to start the enrollment process for the Optimum Wellness Plan online. During this process, customers can view the pricing estimates. Pricing and enrollment are not finalized until your pet’s first visit to a Banfield Pet Hospital, which must be done within 30 days of sign-up. While customers must provide pet age, breed and other information, Banfield states these factors do not affect pricing.

Puppies and kittens under 6 months old require different plans than adults. Otherwise, only the plan level, location selection and add-ons impact the price. ConsumerAffairs confirmed this by obtaining several quotes with varying pet breeds and ages in different areas across the U.S. Although location was the biggest factor of change in cost, the changes observed were minimal. Here are a few estimates for coverage in California’s 90001 ZIP code.

Are Banfield Optimum Wellness Plans legit?

Yes, Banfield Optimum Wellness Plans are legitimate offerings from Banfield Pet Hospitals. The plans offer comprehensive preventive care for pets, including office visits, vaccinations, diagnostic testing, discounts on additional services and more. However, it's important to note that an OWP is not pet insurance — it does not cover treatments for accidents or illnesses.

Banfield lays out plan coverages and pricing estimates and allows customers to begin enrollment online.  Overall, for pet owners seeking to spread out the cost of preventive care for their furry companions, Banfield Optimum Wellness Plans can be a valuable investment. Customers looking for accident and illness coverage or those put off by enrollment fees and the possibility of owing money even after their pet passes away may decide to look elsewhere.

Banfield Optimum Wellness Plans FAQ

Do Banfield Optimum Wellness Plans offer online quotes?

Yes, customers can begin enrollment online and view pricing estimates for Banfield Optimum Wellness Plans.

Do Banfield Optimum Wellness Plans offer discounts?

Banfield offers $15 off your OWP enrollment fee for adding more than one pet to your plan. The discount is applied when confirming each pet’s enrollment at their first appointment.

Do Banfield Optimum Wellness Plans have a money-back guarantee?

OWPs do not offer a money-back guarantee. However, if a customer wishes to cancel their pet's OWP, they may do so at any time. Depending on the services received and payments made, there may be an outstanding balance owed.

Do Banfield Optimum Wellness Plans pay the vet directly?

Because the OWP is not insurance, there are no reimbursements or direct payments to the vet on the customer’s behalf. Instead, customers pay for the plan either annually or through monthly installments. When you visit a Banfield Pet Hospital for covered services, you don't need to pay for each visit separately. However, if the pet requires services outside the plan, you must pay separately for those services. But the OWP may provide an additional discount (5% to 20%).

The first thing you should know is that they make it very difficult to cancel. If you cancel and they haven't recouped their money, they will make you pay the full amount. This means that they tell you that the office visits are included, but they are just putting them on your tab and don't actually clear until your monthly fees are paid to cover them. It's a scam.

I found an abandoned kitten. When I first brought the kitten in, they told me she was too young to be away from her mother, but then when it came to buying the wellness plan, they told me she wasn't a kitten anymore, which I suspect was because the cat plan prices are more expensive then the kitten, and they wanted more money.

I paid for the service for a long time but only used it a few times. When I went to cancel, it was a COMPLETE HASSLE! First, I waited on hold for over an hour to speak to someone because while you can cancel the annual renewal online, you can't cancel the monthly payments online. The person I talked to took 15 minutes going over items in my account, asking me about my cat being aggressive when they were brought into the clinic. What any of that has to do with me canceling, I'll never know because he said he had to go over everything; it's part of their policy. They then put me on hold, where I was hung up on! They have my phone number; it's how they look up your account, but they didn't bother to call me back. I had to call them again and wait on hold for another 45 minutes to talk to someone. Utter nonsense. Terrible customer service.

It's a rip off. Stay away. They charge you a monthly fee for dubious discounts and you can't cancel even if your pet dies or you stop using their services. Absolute rip off. Now you know. If you lose hundreds of dollars don't blame Banfield!

I have had a Banfield wellness plan since 2013 when I adopted my girl. I had her euthanized yesterday and when I called about cancelling my policy their response was you owe 892.00 before can cancel. The vets and techs have always been great and caring. When you lose your baby of 12 years and they have done all the doctoring for her I think they could absorb this final cost of their plan. I will never use Banfield again if I get another pet. I should have kept her going til Dec when she was supposed to renew???? My 1 star should be a 0 star
