My dog is a four-and-a-half-year-old Bichon who hasn't been in good health. My husband who's a physician brushes her teeth at least three times a week. However, she had to have 16 teeth extracted because of overcrowding in her mouth and they had to be extracted under anesthesia at the vet's office. The procedure would cost $800 and when I called AKC Pet Insurance, I was told it was not covered. The policy stated that the only time that anything involving teeth was included was when it was due to an accident, which I didn't think that was fair and I felt it should be considered because hers was not due to any type of dental disease. There was no form of gum disease or dental decay. If someone would ask me about AKD, I'd tell them to read the contract very carefully before they go on board.
Hi Janet,
I'm sorry your policy was not helpful for the teeth extractions. You are correct in that the policy Terms and Conditions exclude teeth extractions unless they are due to an accident. We do encourage everyone to read their Terms and Conditions and the Customer Care Team is here to help with any questions or concerns. We do appreciate you taking the time to provide us with feedback.Best,

We got an AKC Pet Insurance when we had our dog, who is about three years old now. I had a dog who had a very, very expensive illness and that was the reason that we decided to get insurance this time. AKC Pet Insurance was just what we expected.
I bought a puppy and when I registered it, I could choose from different things and that’s how I found out about the pet insurance for the first time. There were 3 or 4 different options and AKC has 30 days free pet insurance for accidents and illnesses. I didn’t actually get to use it before it ran out, but I was glad that it was there. I called the vet one time to inquire about plans and prices and it is so expensive. So, having pet insurance is very valuable.
Thanks for the review, Vanessa! Please feel free to give the Customer Care Team a call any time if you have questions about the coverage options.
I have large breed dogs and I talked to some people from the UK where it was very common to have pet insurance and they suggested I get one. AKC Pet Insurance was AKC-affiliated which gave them credibility and I’ve had them for at least 10 years. To process it, I take the dog to the vet and I hand in the insurance form. They have it on file which is nice and they fill it out and send it in. Then, I pay it at the time of service and they send me a check. I don’t have to wait too long for the reimbursement. They also send a note in the process that we received it. My vet now emails or faxes it so it’s even faster.
I have a nine-year-old Leonberger who has bone cancer. He had chemotherapy and radiation so we maxed out but it was never debated one time for the insurance. Everything was paid and it was not an issue at all. It was very positive, just like all my past experiences. My daughter has a pet and I signed him up immediately since it’s totally valuable and I wish my regular people insurance was as easy as this.
Thank you for being part of our Pet Insurance Family for so long, Ansell! We appreciate your review!
When I registered my dog with AKC, I was given information on the pet insurance. AKC Pet Insurance had a discounted rate for starting. I have a show puppy and I was worried if something big would happen.
We have a $4,000 dog so I looked into pet insurance which i very valuable and I kept seeing AKC. I got a puppy package from them so that every time I would go to the vet, there is no charge.
Hi Madeline,
I'm glad you see the value in pet insurance. I'm sorry you were under the impression that there would be no charge for every vet visit. Pet insurance reimburses for veterinary expenses that are eligible according to the plan you chose at enrollment. If you have questions about your coverage or need further clarification, we would be more than happy to speak with you. Feel free to ask for Adam or Jasmin.
I have a dog I purchased from a breeder and there was an AKC Pet Insurance certificate for the first month. My past dogs are all older and pet insurance wasn’t a thing when I had them, so I got one for security. It's highly valuable.
My wife and I paid a decent amount for our first dog and I thought that if was gonna spend that much on a dog, I might as well pay a couple of bucks a month too if anything bad happens. So, I Googled “pet insurance” and AKC was one of the first ones that came up. It’s a reputable name and if your dogs are pure-bred and recognized by AKC, I assumed that that was a good thing. I have their policy for two years now and so far, my experience with them has been good. The last time I called them was to see if I could lower my rates. For the first two years, I have $15,000 in total coverage for each dog. My dogs are relatively healthy so I wanted to bump that number down to see if I could get the monthly premium to come down a little bit. They worked the numbers with me and we came to a number that came down to $15 a pet a month and that was fine for me.
The price that i pay a month for two pets is about 80 bucks a month for a $8,000 in coverage per dog, and that’s a small price to pay. On the first year that I had the insurance, it kind of paid for itself as far as what I saved at the vet. I made a couple of trips to the emergency vet, and they always charge an arm and a leg for using the most minor things, so it paid off for that. But this last year, I didn’t have to claim anything.
But on top of the annual deductible, they also have a 20% co-insurance that they take out of every claim. So, after your annual deductible has been paid and if your bill was $1,000, you would have to come out-of-pocket $200 of that. That kind of threw me off at first, but that was a pretty standard thing for a pet insurance. The turnaround time was also a little slow. It could be over a month before I'd get a check in the mail to reimburse me for my cost, so that could be a little bit more efficient. But outside of that, they’ve covered all claims that I’ve sent in to the max extent that they could under my policy, so I can’t complain about that.
Thank you for taking the time to provide us with your feedback. All of our claims are processed within 3 to 5 days of receiving them unless additional information is needed from your veterinarian, which could delay the processing time. If you have experienced slower processing times, we would be more than happy to look into it further and answer any questions you may have. Feel free to call and ask for Adam or Jasmin.

AKC Pet Insurance
We purchased pet insurance over a year ago for our Rottweiler. He is now almost 2. We've been paying $38/month with a $500 deductible. I knew neutering was not part of my plan, nor exams. Over the past year we have spent about $3000 in vet bills. We had x-rays to check for hip dysplasia because he was limping. I was not aware the x-rays are related to that condition it was not covered. We had the x-rays when he was neutered. He suffered a dog bite three days prior to being neutered. I was initially told that would be covered. The expenses were over $700. He needed sutures, an exam and medication. They tested him for Lyme disease due to his limping. With all these vet bills and us paying $38/month for over a year I was only reimbursed $18.77.
My point is that it makes much more sense to open a separate account and save for big expenses rather than pay monthly and wonder if you will be reimbursed or not. It's a waste of money. If you want the insurance to cover exams, hip dysplasia, medications, etc and not have a big deductible you will be paying over $100/month or around there. At that point it makes more sense to just save for these expenses rather than padding the insurance company.
I’m sorry that you’re not finding your insurance to be beneficial. We do our best to make the Terms and Conditions of the policy you selected as clear as possible on what is and isn’t covered to avoid any confusion. Only charges relating to covered injuries or illnesses would be applied to the deductible. We offer a variety of deductibles knowing that everyone has different needs from their insurance. Some people like having higher deductibles in order to keep monthly premiums low, others prefer lower deductibles, so they don’t have to pay so much out of pocket. Again, I’m sorry that not as many of the charges went toward your deductible as you expected. Thank you for taking the time to provide us with your feedback. If you have any further questions or concerns, please call in and ask for Jasmin or Adam.
Dogs don’t live long enough, but we had decided that we would never put them through any kind of painful experience. If they had cancer, we would never put them through any kind of chemo or surgery. That’s not what we believed on what they’re here for. We’ve lost three that had passed on their own. I love them more than I love most people. We got pet insurance to save money and have time to treat our dogs with the basic and take money and have them, keep them and love them.
I acquired pet insurance because there’s just so much going around and it also covers basic shots. AKC Pet Insurance covers pretty much all the basics that the dogs need. I treat my dogs for fleas every month, year-round even the winter, because people don’t realize that fleas and ticks are out during the winter as well so I try to protect them and they cover.
I’ve been with another policyholder before and dropped them. AKC Pet Insurance is much more affordable and I really like it. I heard about them through my breeder. We have rescue dogs and we had two breds. My physical therapist also has it for her dog. They cover a lot more than a lot of other places that I have investigated. Only one of my animals has it because they are in very good conditions. You can choose different levels. They cover a lot and there are some exclusions that I’m not thrilled about, but you have to kinda sculpt your own policy.
You can access your policy online or you can call at any time. They’re very quick and if they need something, they e-mail me right away. You can either e-mail, fax or mail your stuff in. Of course, you want your check right away so I always e-mail it or fax it and I get my check right away. It’s 80 or 90%. Brady had one of his shots and they also cover Lyme disease shots. He also had his monthly chewable heartworm medicine and I sent in the information and got a check in a week for the full amount.
It's very important to have pet insurance. I wanted to make sure my dog is taken care of and I had a pretty good experience with AKC Pet Insurance. I had to call several times and give them my e-mail since it was not changed properly, but other than that, I’d recommend them.
I have a pet that I have for a while and she’s close to two. I saw what all the people paid for if anything went wrong with their pets, so I thought I'd get a pet insurance. I went to the AKC website and I assumed that they knew what they were talking about. They're a pretty large company and if they were endorsing something, it should be good. So, I went and got a policy with them and I have it for four months now. Their reps have been very nice and easy-going, too.
We ended up getting a new puppy and the one-month free trial with AKC was part of the whole enrollment. There was one time I may have actually needed it. I called to figure out what was going on but the woman said I needed to call a week prior to activate everything before I had a problem with my dog. So I couldn't even take advantage of it. But the woman was nice. She at least got me enrolled and explained how everything works.
Hello, I am glad we were able to assist you in starting your coverage. I’m sorry there was some confusion with how the 30-Day Certificate works. The AKC Pet Insurance 30-Day Certificate is a benefit of AKC registration. Since it is an insurance policy, it must be activated for coverage to take effect and is not automatically available with the completion of AKC registration. I’m sorry that the insurance was not helpful for this particular incident. I hope that your puppy is doing well now and is staying safe and healthy! Please let us know if you have any more questions or if there’s anything else we can do for you! Feel free to call and ask for Adam or Jasmin.
Best,AKC Pet Insurance
I registered a Border Collie and then AKC Pet Insurance came up on the computer so I took it. I’m glad I did because right after I got the free insurance, I got into a car accident and my dog was hit by one of the airbags. I didn’t even think to call them, but then I remembered getting it when I registered her, which was shortly before the accident. I called them up and asked them if I was eligible for that and they said yes. I sent in everything and they gave me part of the money back, which was fantastic. Their rep was really good. He told me what I needed to do and he sent me the forms to fill out right away. The process was really easy.
I only had them one month free and I haven't extended. I thought having a pet insurance is a great thing. The more I’m talking to people, the more I’m thinking it will be good. If I have one good dog, it would be worth it, but I have so many dogs and 10 cats and horses, so I don’t know how much I can afford or who I would choose. So, that’s what I’m thinking about right now. Nonetheless, I’ve told a few people to accept the pet insurance when they register their dogs.
My eight-year-old Doberman died of meningitis hemiplegic anemia about eight weeks ago and I had to have him put down. It was very expensive and I paid for all the treatments that my dog needed, but it would’ve been nice to have some reimbursement for some of that treatment that I had to pay out. So, I decided that my next dog would have insurance. AKC is so trusted that it made sense that their insurance would be trusted. I did everything online when I got their policy and their website was very user-friendly. I have it for about six weeks now and I haven't used it yet because this puppy is extremely healthy. I would recommend AKC.
Thank you for the heartfelt review, Lisa! We greatly appreciate the feedback as well!
My experience with AKC Pet Insurance has been good. My dog is 10 months old and I’ve been with AKC for 10 months too. I had a Schnauzer before him that was 15 years old and Schnauzers are prone to have a lot of issues and I didn’t have insurance with him and I wished I had. So, I just went ahead and got a pet insurance for my new dog since the get-go. I had him neutered and I’ve had a flea and tick and heart medicine with him, and every time I’ve had him to the vet they’ve always reimbursed me quickly.
Having a pet insurance is very valuable, especially with Schnauzers. They have so many issues. People on Facebook had asked me about insurance and I told them who I have insurance with. I told my friends that I’ve had no issues with AKC at all and that they’ve been very quick to answer questions and advise me. Any time I’ve asked for anything, they’ve always been really quick to answer or send me anything in the mail. They’ve been really good with me.
Thank you for the review, Karen! We also greatly appreciate the referrals!
It's extremely valuable to have pet insurances. We need them. We've had AKC Pet Insurance since 2008 and they were very good recently. They did all what they could for the final arrangement. I would surely recommend AKC.
My dog’s AKC registered and I had some insurance then. However, the pet company never sent any information, I assumed I don’t have insurance through them so I decided to go ahead and take an insurance out on my dog. My friend have insurance with AKC Pet Insurance, so I just changed insurance over to them. It was easy signing up with them. So far, I’m satisfied with them from what I’ve read through the computer of what they cover and what they don’t. It’s been good, so far. it feels comfortable knowing that he’s insured if something happens.
My dog is AKC-registered so I just went ahead and went with AKC Pet Insurance. I've been with them for half a year and thankfully, I haven't had any experience yet but I'd recommend it.
Thanks for the review, Robert!
I first heard about AKC Pet Insurance through the registration packet that I got when I registered my dog with AKC. I talked about AKC Pet Insurance with my vet and the breeder and I thought it was a good place to start. Also, the vet's good and well-respected. I had an accident the beginning of this month and I was so glad to have the coverage. It helped out tremendously and it's been a very quick recovery. It was a great experience.
I googled AKC Pet Insurance when I got my puppy 'cause he's AKC-registered. I've had it for two years and two months and I had an easy experience, but it was difficult on the vet once or twice because they weren't sending in the right diagnostic codes so they had to resend them. Then ten minutes that they were sent, they got me a check immediately for what was covered. Having pet insurance is valuable, especially if you have doctors.
Our dog was an AKC bred dog, so we immediately were interested in that AKC pet plan insurance policy. We got the paperwork and we've been a policyholder for 11 years now. They process claims timely and we didn't have any issues. Our dog just recently hurt her foot ankle and she had to have some x-rays. And the process has been streamlined immensely - just scanning the claim forms now, and not having to mail them. We got the check and reimbursement in a record time as well.
Thank you for the review, Dawn! I’m glad you found our new claim process simpler! We thank you for your loyalty over the years and am glad we’ve been able to help you over the years. I hope your dog has made a full recovery from her ankle injury. Please let us know if there’s ever anything we can do for you. Our Customer Care Team is always here to help. Best, AKC Pet Insurance
Our second dog died of cancer and we spent a lot of money in that. So, when we got our third dog, the breeder got pet insurance for us and it was AKC. When our dog ate our Christmas tree, he needed a bunch of surgeries 'cause there was wire in his stomach, and AKC was right there. They helped us through the whole thing. Our dog was pretty sick and we almost lost him and AKC came through with flying colors. AKC also put our dog's picture in an ad and told our story, and it was nice. My wife and I were in the picture as well. We recommend anybody to get the insurance if they have a dog or a puppy because the dogs are mischievous. Anyone who doesn’t get this for their pets are playing with fire. Every dog has issues and it can get expensive.
Thank you for the review, Dennis! We’re glad we were able to be there to help and so glad that your dog has made a full recovery. Sometimes it takes having had the experience like you did with your previous dog to appreciate the benefit of pet insurance. We always appreciate the recommendations! Please let us know if there’s ever anything we can do for you. Our Customer Care Team is always here to help! Best, AKC Pet Insurance
When I registered my dog, I learned about AKC. I was given the 30 days of free veterinarian insurance and it was good. I used the trial and I did not sign up for more insurance as I didn’t want a monthly bill. When I used the trial, I paid $100 out of my pocket for a claim and I felt that my bill was more than that. But when AKC went through it, they said the bill was a $96 thing, and so it was all my bill.
The 30-Day Certificate does indeed have a small deductible of $100. Eligible expenses go toward the deductible, so if the vet bill included items that were not eligible, those would not have gone toward the deductible. I’m glad you took advantage of benefit by activating the policy, but I’m sorry it wasn’t beneficial for you. If you ever have any questions about our insurance, our Customer Care Team would be more than happy to speak with you. Best, AKC Pet Insurance
We've always had our dogs registered with AKC and Kercy is our fourth corgi. We got the insurance when he was less than a year old and he's four now so we don't quite get to the deductible. We've used it for routine stuff except for some allergy medicine and they did an X-ray to make sure he didn’t have a blockage in his bowel at one point. It turned out to be nothing serious and the vet put him on a prescription dog food. He’s been fine since then. The insurance is worth it. For the first three pets we had, there were issues with kidneys, etcetera when they got to their last couple of years and we found ourselves spending more money at that point. I figured that this time we would go ahead and get the pet insurance in case anything like that happened. I would also recommend AKC.
Thanks for the review, Margaret! We always appreciate the recommendations!
I had a dog two years ago that passed away and I spent thousands of dollars because I was so devoted to the dog. I did everything I could even though I knew she was terminal. I heard about AKC Pet Insurance through the American Kennel Club and I decided to purchase their insurance for my other dog. She is only a year old now so I changed the deductible. Other than that, I have no issues with AKC and I would recommend them.
Thanks for leaving a review, Barbara!
When my dog got her Canine Good Citizen Award, I got AKC Pet Insurance information that came in the pack. It seemed like a good deal and I trusted the AKC name. In fact, my veterinarian daughter suggested it. I lost two dogs of old age to seizures in the past two years. I have a new puppy and I thought now is the time to get an insurance because it might allow us to do more for her as she ages. She's only 21 months old now, so we don't expect a lot of years for it yet. I'm new to this and I'm a retired person on a fixed income, but I want to give the best for my pets as they age. Moreover, their customer service team was extraordinarily nice. I have my billing taken out of my credit card, and my card got hacked. AKC called to say that the payment didn’t go through and they were extremely helpful in dealing with the setup of my new card.
Thank you so much for the review, Mimi! Congratulations on getting your dog’s Canine Good Citizen Certificate! I’m so glad you’ve had a positive experience! I will pass on the kind words to our staff. Please let us know if you ever have any questions or concerns. Our Customer Care Team is always happy to help! Best, AKC Pet Insurance
When I first got my dog, I registered him with the AKC and they sent me something in the mail that said, "You get two free months of pet insurance." My dog is now 13 years old so I've had this insurance for 13 years. In the last few months, I've had a lot of claims so I have a lot of experience with them. They have gotten a lot better. When I first had them, they took a long time to pay the reimbursement. But they've gotten quick about it, usually within a week or two. Worst case, it will take them three weeks to pay on the claim.
But I wish they had some website functions. With other pet insurances, you can go to a website, look at your claims, check the status, and submit the claim through an app. But AKC doesn't have anything like that. Basically, you can email them a PDF of your claim and that's it. I have called there quite a few times and some of their customer service people are really good and helpful, but some of them are not. They're professional during our interactions. But sometimes I think I've been given some wrong information. Some of them seemed to understand their product better than others.
My biggest problem with AKC is that they have a very low minimum. They put limits on how they’ll pay out for conditions or for the year of your policy. I have a dog in another policy and she has much better coverage because the limits are much higher. AKC is very restrictive on certain conditions that they won't cover, such as arthritis, while my other dog's policy covers that. AKC doesn't cover acupuncture or chiropractic, but a lot of companies now cover those things. AKC will put limits on how much they'll pay out on every condition, not just for the policy year, but for the whole life of your pet. So I would not recommend AKC. And if I were to get new insurance, I would not use them.
Thank you for your feedback. We are always striving to improve what we can offer our customers and ways to better serve them. Please feel free to give us a call to discuss your concerns and give us more feedback.
We looked into insurance policy because of the bills. Dogs are my life and they're expensive to raise and take care. So, we shopped around and saw AKC Pet Insurance online. They had their offer, I grabbed it and I've been a policyholder for four years now. My most recent experience with them was when my dog had an allergy. I filled out the claim form and the doctor signed it, sent it to AKC and then they transferred the payment. AKC Pet Insurance is very good. I'm very happy with the way they work.
Thanks for the review, Raymond! I’m so glad you’ve had a good experience. We greatly appreciate your loyalty! To make the claims process even easier, we created new claim forms that no longer require signatures. Visit our website to download the newest version. We purchased our dog from a pet store and we were provided with a free month of insurance from AKC Pet Insurance. Pet insurance was never something we had really considered. But a couple years back my other dog got very sick and it racked up to over $5,000 for a little 14 lb. dog to get better. So, we decided it'd be best to pay a little bit more money in the long run so I stayed with AKC. However, it was a hassle to set up. I called and they said I needed to call somebody else. I would then call somebody else and they would say, "Okay. You need to call them." I would call back and they would say, "No. You needed somebody else." That happened three times. It took me a week and a half to get my insurance set up and I was making a call or two to them every day. Thank God we haven't really needed to use it but, it's been set up and working properly now. Nonetheless, their reps were all super nice.
I’m sorry to hear it was so challenging for you to set up your policy. We appreciate your feedback as we are always looking for ways to better serve our customers. We would love to speak with you and discuss your experience to try to identify where the break down was. Please feel free to call and ask for Adam or Jasmin. We’re always here to help.
