I registered my dog through AKC. He’s a large breed dog and you never know what can happen. I’ve already been able to use the AKC Pet insurance to get reimbursed for shots. All I needed to do was to get an itemized bill from my vet and then I just did the claim online. It was no trouble at all. That was 10 days ago and I got an email saying that it was processed, so I should be receiving it any day.
Thank you for the review, Kimberly. I'l glad we've been able to help you with your vet bills and that you found our claims submission process easy to use. I’ve had dogs my whole life and sometimes it becomes too expensive when they get sick. When I got my puppy at the puppy store, I found out about AKC. I've had their pet insurance for two years and everything’s been fine with them. I'm happy with the policy. I just pay the monthly fees. My dog is only a puppy so we haven't had any major issues.
Hi Debbie,
Thank you for the review! I'm glad to hear your puppy store told you about us and that you see the value in having pet insurance. Please let us know if there is ever anything we can do for you. We are always happy to help!

I've had AKC for quite about nine and a half years. I learned about it from my breeder that we got our dog from about 10 years ago. I thought a pet insurance was a good idea because of the price of the veterinarian charges. It's almost like going to a human doctor. It's pretty valuable having a pet insurance. We had a Chesapeake Bay retriever about six years ago who had to have a knee operation. I was sure glad I have insurance. So far, I've been happy with AKC but it's getting a little pricey. I have three claims that I'm waiting to hear from right now. Process-wise, it's pretty simple to do it all online. I did my claim for them and the veterinarian itemized the page, scanned it and send it to AKC through the email.

A pet insurance is very valuable. You don’t ever know if there's something you may need. Vet bills are very high. When I got a puppy from the American Kennel Club, I had all the information on it. I've had their pet insurance since June of last year. I drive a semi and Jake was a trucking dog. He was gonna be in a truck and he was gonna be in places where we had him on a leash but he could still be in danger. I wanted to make sure that he was covered. Plus, he had some medical issues that needed to be covered. AKC paid my bills on time and they reimbursed me on time. Everything was good there. I'd recommend them. But Jake died in May and I called AKC about it. He was seven months old. He got really sick and didn’t last a week. I had set up for him to go to a neurologist on a Monday. They were gonna scan him but he died Sunday. The last time I used the insurance was in Iowa, a few days before he died.
Annette,
Thank you for the review. I'm so very sorry to hear about Jake's passing. We know how hard it is to lose a pet, especially so suddenly. It sounds like you were very close. I'm glad you we were able to help you with your vet bills despite the sad outcome. I hope you are healing from your lose and able to enjoy memories of all the good times you had with Jake. If there is ever anything we can do for you in the future, please let us know.

A vet recommended AKC to us. We customized our plan and the insurance came in handy because my dog ended up having an accident. This was caused by another dog that was aggressive. My dog turned out okay and the claim was handled so well. The fact that you could do it on your own then call and check on it was pretty great.
For my claim, I called and a gentleman answered. He told me exactly what to do and the process. I submitted my claim online and called back again. They told me I was gonna get the reimbursement in a certain number of days. They asked if I had all the information and said we were good to go. It was very easy submitting the forms online, getting a human being and getting everything on time, which is really hard to find nowadays. AKC has been really informative and super helpful. Anytime I need a question answered, I call and there’s always a human being. Having a pet insurance is super valuable. I didn’t honestly think that insurance existed for animals until I got my own. It is super helpful to have because my dog is very clumsy and accidents happen more to animals than they do humans. A lot of people that I work with know about AKC Insurance and they use it as well.
Thank you for the review, Camillah! It's nice to hear that your vet recommended us. That means a lot. I'm so glad we were able to help you with your dog's accident. There’s a hospital a couple of miles away from us and we got our AKC Pet Insurance through them. We've been with AKC for about 13 years now and we’ve had good experience with them. They’ve been fairly prompt in payment. We also finally worked a deal with the veterinarian where they have all the paperwork and can file it directly online with these people. So, we don’t really have to get involved with the paperwork anymore and it worked out pretty good. We like the insurance and it saves us some money. Our dogs are getting a little older and need more service, so that’s helped a little too. I also got very good customer service every time I’ve had to speak with them. One time, I forgot to cash a check and it expired. I contacted them and I had excellent service about getting the check reinstated and sent to me.

AKC has been very good to me. It was very easy to file claims and their customer service had gone just as I would expect it to. My dog had an ear infection and went through some problems with that. It could be better if AKC had a copay instead of filing the claims. But for the price that I’m paying, I hope to at least break even.
Hi Dan,
I’m glad that you’ve had good claims and customer service experiences and that we’ve been able to help you with your dog’s healthcare needs! Since veterinarians don’t accept insurance like in human health insurance, traditional co-pays don’t yet exist in pet insurance. If they ever do, we will definitely offer them! I got my Wirehaired Pointing Griffon from a breeder from Rockland’s Kennel. The breeder already had the 30-day insurance and she told me I have the option to go with others, but she’s always kept this AKC Pet Insurance on her dogs. I just went with it so it worked out. After 30 days, I picked everything because I wanna make sure I have cover for everything. If anything goes wrong, I got insurance. It’s been helpful and we never had a problem. I was able to submit a few of my claims and 14 days, I had a check and I got my returns for whatever additional stuff I had to get back. The last time, I called AKC just to make sure there wasn’t anything I had to do to continue my renewal because my pet insurance had a year passed. I really like and recommend them.

I had a great experience with AKC and having one of their high end policies which covered a lot. However, I had to call them to cancel my policy as I'm semi-retired and I lost one of my sources of income. The gentleman from AKC was so nice and didn't make me feel guilty. He told me that I got a refund for the partial month that I had already pre-paid and to be sure and file any claims that I still had outstanding. During the time when I was with them, it was really easy to file a claim. I would just go online, get a form and fax it to them. AKC would respond quickly. I'd recommend them.

The paperwork at AKC is done efficiently. However, it's not what we think we ought to get back. When they changed from covering the cost at doing dental experiences to a flat rate 50 bucks, it affected us considerably because 50 bucks doesn't get very far in Hawaiian veterinarian processes. If they were paying the percentages like every other problem that dogs would get, it would be a reasonable acceptance. But flat rates for South Carolina and flat rates for Hawaii is a big difference. It's also a silly thing that I can't transfer existing conditions as they won't cover them.

J NL, thank you for your review. It is unfortunate that your claim was denied due to waiting periods. With our 30-Day Certificate of Insurance, accident coverage has a waiting period of 1 day and illness coverage has a waiting period of 5 days. I've been showing dogs since I was a little kid and it's very valuable to have a pet insurance for them. I have rescues but I don't have pet insurance on them. I trust AKC and I have had their insurance for 3 years now. The only problem I've had was when my dog had an accident where she got knocked into the fence. I had to go to our vet who had somebody on call since it was an emergency and it was on a Sunday afternoon. However, that person isn't there anymore so the form wasn't signed and so I didn't get paid back for that one because AKC wouldn't accept it without signature. Other than that, the reps are very easy to get in contact with. Somebody always answers the phone and they normally handle situations well. The paperwork is all fine and either the vet mails it in for me or I do it. Then, they send the check for the part that is theirs.

When I got my dog registered, I received all the paperwork and I've been an AKC policy holder for 4 years now. I just had my first claim with them and that was not the best experience I had. We took my dog in because she had itch-like hot spots on her. The vet told me she thought it was allergy-related and put her on allergy medication. I submitted the claim but they didn’t pay for it. They told me that the secondary issue that the vet said was due to anxiety.
However, my dog is not on anxiety medication and I even questioned them, “If she's got anxiety, why is she on an allergy medication? Why isn’t she on an anxiety medication?” I guess that’s something I'm gonna take up with my vet but at the same time it’s ridiculous that the secondary cause of it could be anxiety and AKC is not paying for it. While the customer service has been great and the people I talked to were always very nice, I'm not happy. I paid $200 and some out of pocket. I've been paying out $56 for 4 years but when I actually have a claim, it doesn’t get paid. It leaves a sour taste in my mouth.
Hello Julie,
We are sorry your dog has been experiencing discomfort. It is unfortunate your claim has been denied due to a secondary condition. With your current policy plan, anxiety is not eligible for coverage. Any secondary complications resulting from this condition are ineligible for coverage as well. Our claims adjusters work closely with your veterinarian to identify the underlying causes of your pet’s medical conditions. Upon your policy renewal, behavioral conditions and alternative therapies will be included in your base plan. If you have questions or would like to discuss your situation in more detail, please give the Customer Care Team a call and ask for Adam or Jasmin.

I upgraded to the more expensive AKC membership package in hopes that this insurance would cover us on our new puppy. To be clear, AKC Pet Insurance is not the same company as AKC, but they partner. Over that first month, after bringing home my 13-week old puppy from the breeder, we incurred hundreds of dollars in medical costs. Amy, the customer service rep at AKC Insurance, found a way to finagle out of every single penny and unless I hire an attorney to further take my time and money, the upgrade wasn't worth it. I suppose I could go back to AKC to tell them my story and ask for a partial refund. Basically, what you'll find is that during your first free 30 days or so, AKC Pet Insurance will claim that any charge within about the first 20 days falls within your "waiting period." There are different versions of how long that period is circulating online. Our rep took the version that favored her company.
For us, we discovered our puppy had parvo. Bam. Big bill within the first week of having insurance. Yes, the breeder gave back SOME of the money we spent on the puppy. AKC Pet Insurance got out of covering it all together. Still have a charge that "qualifies" after your wait period, just before your insurance is set to expire? Oh no. AKC Pet Insurance says there's a deductible to meet and a "no pre-existing" condition clause. In our case, after the parvo was over, the puppy later had a diarrhea issue which was considered a bacterial irritation. Totally unrelated to the parvo and well within the covered period.
When I called out Amy on her insisting that there was a pre-existing condition, (I am backed by my vets) she said, "Well, you'd only get about $60 back anyway." In the end, I've seen zero! Avoid this company. They are making money off your joy of owning a new, purebred puppy. When it counts, they are not there for you. That was my experience, at least. Thought I'd share to save the next person from extra expense. Hopefully, your first month of owning a puppy goes much better than mine did.
Hello Jean,
It is unfortunate that your claim was denied due to a waiting period. The first 30 days of free insurance you’re referring to is the 30-Day Certificate of Insurance, a benefit of your registration with the American Kennel Club. The 30-Day Certificate of Insurance has a 1-day waiting period for accidents and a 5-day waiting period for illnesses. The waiting periods for your policy are listed in the Terms and Conditions and we want all our customers to be aware of them and what it means if a condition starts during a waiting period. An accident or illness before the end of this waiting period will be pre-existing, as dictated by the Department of Insurance. If you have questions or would like to discuss your situation in more detail, please give the Customer Care Team a call and ask for Adam or Jasmin.

The AKC name makes me feel comfortable. One of my friends had a dog that had to have ACL surgery and it was $4,000. When you look at the pet insurance, anything can happen, so I just thought it’s like a savings account so you don’t have to look at the dog and question whether or not you're gonna spend the money 'cause you got the insurance for it. I have a working dog and she does tracking. She also runs a lot and does a lot of jumps. I wanted to make sure that I started her on something that would cover any injuries that were to happen. She is generally a healthy dog, although I wanted a security measure. When I registered her at AKC, I got the information for the pet insurance. I thought the rates were decent so I went with them. But my experience was really upsetting and that was the only time I submitted a claim.
It all started when I thought my working dog had allergies. She had medication for that and then, about four months after, she was getting that entropion at the beginning of August. I went ahead and did the surgery for her with expectations to be reimbursed by the insurance because what else am I paying it for? But my claim was declined - every last bit of it. It was a $1200, and they had another $400 in vet bills on top of that from regular exams. When I submitted my claim, I wasn’t sure how to do it because I saw on the form to submit that there was a flat fee for three different vet bills.
So, I waited until I had something that was worth it. I wasn’t gonna send in a claim for $40 right away. And I waited until I had a good sum of money added up there. And that way, it would be worth it to go through and take care of everything all at once instead of me submitting one and AKC reps having to contact the vet a month later. I was counting on getting $1600 reimbursed for unexpected medical bills but I didn't get them.
I don’t know if AKC Pet Insurance covers the preexisting condition because my working dog was diagnosed with eye allergies and it led into the entropion. It was something unexpected. At first, the medicine was working on her eyes and fixing the issue with the wateriness and the swelling. But her eyes were irritated on both sides, and they ended up clearing up one and not the other, and that’s when it was determined that she would need that surgery because there was a deeper issue than allergies.
I thought the policy was all fine and dandy and I thought highly of it and actually promoted it to people. I’m a dog trainer, so if people ask about my insurance, I let them know what I use. Obviously, I had yet to submit a claim at that point. For the 60 dollars a month that I'm paying for the insurance that didn't even cover anything, I’ve wasted it for something that didn’t help me out. I’ve actually had people tell me to call back and file a grievance because it wasn't fair. In the end, I’m more disappointed than anything. And I had decided to cancel my policy, which I had from April through November, and I've since been doing a bunch of research on other insurance plans. I have multiple working dogs and I wanna put them all on the same policy. But I wanna make sure that it’s something that’s gonna cover them when something does happen.

My sister is involved in dog agility and showing dogs and she encouraged me to purchase insurance from AKC. Usually, things happen in the first year or two with the puppies, so it seemed like a good idea. The insurance seemed to work well over the years. My Golden had a shoulder surgery, but that wasn’t covered. But the Valley Fever and thyroid medicine were covered. So overall, the insurance covered a fair amount of extent.
I got my Golden 10 years ago and he passed away early in the year this summer. It just happened in the middle of the night. It was a ruptured spleen due to her cancer growth. However, there was no coverage for the emergency room visits or anything around the death of a dog, which I was not happy about. I thought something like that would be covered. Nevertheless, the pet insurance more than covered the yearly premium because pets have pretty much a lifelong Valley Fever and thyroid issue. There were a couple of trips because of the bad food, but on most of the vet visits, a certain percentage was covered. We still have coverage on our other dog, a three-year-old Cockapoo.

I’ve never had an issue per se, but the only thing that was disconcerting was that when I took them this year for a checkup and submitted the claims, a lot of the things were denied because there wasn’t a full year of time that had lapsed. It was based on scheduling and getting them in to see the vet, and I was disappointed in that. The policy goes from year to year and I need to be more mindful of that in the future. Still, I’ve already recommended friends of mine to look on AKC's website.
Hi Christine,
It sounds like you're referring to the wellness benefit called Defender or DefenderPlus. These benefits are an annual schedule of benefits that coincides with your policy year. This benefit does require a little bit of planning when it comes to scheduling your visits during your policy year. However, my son had a very bad experience with a dog that had to have eye surgery. It was very unexpected, and he purchased insurance after that. He then told me I should get insurance for my dog, which I did. Not that there was anything wrong with the dog. My dog is four and a half years old now, but we decided that we should because unexpected things come up. My son had an excellent experience with AKC so we went with the same company.
It has been very good with AKC. The gentleman who I signed up with was very nice and explained everything thoroughly. I feel much better having a pet insurance. I've seen the cost of what things are and they can go really high. I haven't had to use the insurance, but I can see that if something should happen to my dog that I will need it because I wouldn’t be able to afford it.

Care for my pet is important. I went with AKC due to the offer that I got through the membership that I have. We made a significant investment into the dog that we bought that we thought we would try AKC and see if it was valuable. I initially called about it and talked to somebody that helped me walk through the plan, and the rep seemed knowledgeable. Time will tell whether the AKC insurance pays for anything. Any insurance is a personal decision, but AKC Pet Insurance is worth looking into.

For the first couple of years, they were quite frustrating but in the last couple of years, they had been great.

Having a pet insurance is very valuable but I’ve seen a lot of people with pets with no insurance and they have got to lay out a lot of money. When I adopted my Bloodhound, it was AKC-registered. But AKC could send a booklet about all the benefits I get instead of emails or something a little clearer to understand what I have and what AKC Pet insurance is. Nevertheless, they cover sickness and injuries and it's always good to have.

I had a good experience with AKC Pet Insurance. We had a puppy before and she got really sick so we decided to play it safe with our new one. My breeder where I got my dog from was registered AKC. I’m responsible for the cost and then I’m reimbursed. However, dealing with claims was a little difficult. Some sections of the forms are confusing. My vet tried to figure it out for me, but it ended up just being a big mess and I ended up having to do it all anyway.

We signed up our mini schnauzer puppy for the free month of insurance via AKC registration. The little guy fell off of a bed and fractured his left rear leg (growth plates). After two surgeries and several thousands of dollars in costs, we submitted to AKC Pet Insurance. I heard nothing after the first month, so I called. They advised that they could not open the email sent to them and I had to send it in a different format. I did as requested. After another month and no contact, I called again. I was informed that I missed a waiting day by 1 day so the fracture was not covered.
The customer rep apologized for the fact that I was not contacted with this information. As we had never had pet insurance this was our test on how "good" it really is and how it really works. I am both disappointed in the company's lack of communication, and the failure to support our insurance claim. Do not purchase this insurance for your pet!!!
I am so sorry that your puppy’s leg was fractured so soon after bringing him home. The policy that you had was the 30 Day Certificate of Insurance that is a benefit of your AKC registration and that particular policy has a 1 day waiting period for accidents. This unfortunate event just happened to take place on the first day of your policy which in turn causes the accident to not be eligible. We absolutely hate it when this happens but all insurance policies have waiting periods and this accident just happened to occur in the 1 day waiting period of the policy. If you’d like to discuss the claim in more detail please give us a call and ask for Adam or Jasmin

My wife was a breeder of dogs and cats so she knew AKC Pet Insurance for a long time. They were very helpful because my wife had passed just a week before and she was the one who was taking care of the animals and I wasn’t involved with the pet insurance. The day after she died, I had a dog that was in the hospital and needed some surgery. The dog was very healthy and then all of a sudden, he got these fibroid tumors in three different places so we paid in our fortune. But the policy came out pretty well. It was $75 a month. The process was a little slow, but other than that AKC was very thorough and they did exactly what the policy called for. I was very happy with the results.

When you submit for the claim, they might have a question but so far, they have paid every claim that we've put in. Our puppy has stomach issues and then he had a blown disc jumping off the bed and needed surgery. It was like $6,000. The paperwork was submitted and AKC paid for what the share that the contract says. You have to be diligent and get your paperwork in there to them and then they take care of it. They send out the check for the amount that the contract says.

Original Review: Sept. 25, 2018
Our experience with AKC insurance started okay, but is now a disaster. My wife and I had insured our AKC registered dog from day one with maximum benefits and all add-ons available at the time. We noticed recently that they had started offering a product with no lifetime limits and immediately upgraded (before the end of our current plan year). First, we were not told that we would pay an additional deductible - that was an unpleasant surprise. Then even though we upgraded to no lifetime limits, AKC is now digging back into our dog's medical record under the old plan to impose a cap based on a preexisting condition! Even though he has had continuous coverage with their own company since he was 8 weeks old! Do not buy this insurance. Go with a bigger, well-established company.
We are so sorry that your experience with us was not on par with our standards. We definitely encourage all of our customers to ask lots of questions and review the Terms and Conditions of their policies as we don’t want there to be any surprises when it comes to your policy. We appreciate the opportunity you’ve given us to provide you the best customer experience and please feel free to reach out to Adam at any time in the future.

When I registered my dog with the AKC, a 30-day certificate came with it. During that 30 days, I had to file a claim and the experience was fantastic, so I stayed with them. I wanted a policy so that if anything happens with my dog, it would help cover my expenses. Having a pet insurance is very valuable especially since my dog tends to get his nose into everything that we see outside. He has picked up a few things that he should not have picked up that I was not able to get away from him. He also had an eye infection when he rolled around in the dirt. So, the insurance has been a really big help for me.
We can go to any vet that we want and not just a network of vets. I pay the cost at the time of service and then I submit the claim to the AKC Pet Insurance. They have an address on the claim form where we can mail it to. It can also be faxed or e-mailed, so it is very convenient. They will then bump the claim up against the policy and make sure what is reimbursable and what is not, and they send the check back. When I filed a claim, the reimbursement came back extremely quick within a week -- at the most, it was two weeks. The customer service was always extremely helpful, very on point and explained everything. They are very thorough and every time I would call them, they took a genuine interest in my puppy. I registered one of my dogs through AKC. They give a 30-day free medical insurance coverage with the registration trying to get you to buy a policy. I made a claim during that 30-day period. I've never had pet insurance before especially with these many animals. I have five dogs and it has always seemed to be a little too expensive for what you could potentially get. I saw an opportunity to see how pet insurance was gonna work and if it wasn't like an extended warranty insurance you get for your car where the first time you tried the claim, the warranty company found some reason not to cover it. I had 30 days free and then I would have to pay a premium if I wanted to continue my coverage. I found it a little peculiar that nobody contacted me if I was gonna pick the policy up and what it would cost.
My dog, that I had the coverage on, had some cancerous lumps and I've had three of them removed so far. The vet removed one within the 30-day period and while I was waiting to get the stitches out on that one, I found another smaller lump nearby. When I went to have the stitches taken out after two weeks, they took that lump out too. I paid for the vet up front. I've sent AKC an email this morning inquiring again if there had been any decision and what was happening with my two claims. I've been waiting over a month for the first claim and a couple of weeks for the second one. They said that they had them both and they’d get back to me as soon as there was a decision. If this is their method of coverage, then I wouldn’t be interested in buying a policy.

Sometimes people think I’m getting robbed. But if you’re covered for the right things, it works and AKC comes through when the dog gets sick. We’ve been pet owners for over 30 years and we’ve had four dogs in that amount of time. They’ve all been large dogs and some lived as long 17 years. Some were healthy while others had some health issues down the road. There were times when we wished we had insurance with some animals but other times, it wouldn’t have paid off because we wouldn’t have needed it. But like with people, we have insurance so that if we ever need it, it’s there. If we don’t need it, that’s great.
When the breeder gave us a form to register our new puppy, there was information contained within that that there was an AKC insurance available. AKC is an organization that has been around a long time and I trust them. Since that was the company that the breeder was recommending, I was gonna at least try it. When I inquired, the people I talked to were very knowledgeable and helpful. They explained exactly what would be covered and put me at ease. My rescue got microchipped at the vet for $75 and it had a yearly fee. I ended up getting a puppy at eight weeks old and the breeder uses the AKC chips so, when Ann, my rescue, had her litter, he helped me go through AKC Pet Insurance to get the AKC chips because they had a one-time fee. I rescued another hound dog and he was the first dog I have that’s AKC-registered and has an AKC chip in him. I just tried the free 30-day but didn’t keep it. I didn't really need it since my vet was reasonable and he isn’t very expensive. If I had a big emergency or something with one of my dogs, it wouldn’t matter what the price was. He would take care of them and I could pay him. If you live in a big city where vets and stuff are expensive, then it’s probably a good idea. But out here where I live, doctor claims are pretty good.
I used the insurance once and submitted a claim but I’ve never heard anything back on it. It was two weeks after I did the free trial. But AKC does everything right and I love the microchips. I’m glad they changed the collars that you can order with their microchip. The first ones that they had six years ago were nice and lasted a long time but AKC changed them and they weren’t good at all because it peeled off. For the first two years, I have $15,000 in total coverage for each dog. My dogs are relatively healthy so I wanted to bump that number down to see if I could get the monthly premium to come down a little bit. They worked the numbers with me and we came to a number that came down to $15 a pet a month and that was fine for me.
The price that i pay a month for two pets is about 80 bucks a month for a $8,000 in coverage per dog, and that’s a small price to pay. On the first year that I had the insurance, it kind of paid for itself as far as what I saved at the vet. I made a couple of trips to the emergency vet, and they always charge an arm and a leg for using the most minor things, so it paid off for that. But this last year, I didn’t have to claim anything.
But on top of the annual deductible, they also have a 20% co-insurance that they take out of every claim. So, after your annual deductible has been paid and if your bill was $1,000, you would have to come out-of-pocket $200 of that. That kind of threw me off at first, but that was a pretty standard thing for a pet insurance. The turnaround time was also a little slow. It could be over a month before I'd get a check in the mail to reimburse me for my cost, so that could be a little bit more efficient. But outside of that, they’ve covered all claims that I’ve sent in to the max extent that they could under my policy, so I can’t complain about that.
Thank you for taking the time to provide us with your feedback. All of our claims are processed within 3 to 5 days of receiving them unless additional information is needed from your veterinarian, which could delay the processing time. If you have experienced slower processing times, we would be more than happy to look into it further and answer any questions you may have. Feel free to call and ask for Adam or Jasmin.

We purchased pet insurance over a year ago for our Rottweiler. He is now almost 2. We've been paying $38/month with a $500 deductible. I knew neutering was not part of my plan, nor exams. Over the past year we have spent about $3000 in vet bills. We had x-rays to check for hip dysplasia because he was limping. I was not aware the x-rays are related to that condition it was not covered. We had the x-rays when he was neutered. He suffered a dog bite three days prior to being neutered. I was initially told that would be covered. The expenses were over $700. He needed sutures, an exam and medication. They tested him for Lyme disease due to his limping. With all these vet bills and us paying $38/month for over a year I was only reimbursed $18.77.
My point is that it makes much more sense to open a separate account and save for big expenses rather than pay monthly and wonder if you will be reimbursed or not. It's a waste of money. If you want the insurance to cover exams, hip dysplasia, medications, etc and not have a big deductible you will be paying over $100/month or around there. At that point it makes more sense to just save for these expenses rather than padding the insurance company.
I’m sorry that you’re not finding your insurance to be beneficial. We do our best to make the Terms and Conditions of the policy you selected as clear as possible on what is and isn’t covered to avoid any confusion. Only charges relating to covered injuries or illnesses would be applied to the deductible. We offer a variety of deductibles knowing that everyone has different needs from their insurance. Some people like having higher deductibles in order to keep monthly premiums low, others prefer lower deductibles, so they don’t have to pay so much out of pocket. Again, I’m sorry that not as many of the charges went toward your deductible as you expected. Thank you for taking the time to provide us with your feedback. If you have any further questions or concerns, please call in and ask for Jasmin or Adam.

Dogs don’t live long enough, but we had decided that we would never put them through any kind of painful experience. If they had cancer, we would never put them through any kind of chemo or surgery. That’s not what we believed on what they’re here for. We’ve lost three that had passed on their own. I love them more than I love most people. We got pet insurance to save money and have time to treat our dogs with the basic and take money and have them, keep them and love them.
I acquired pet insurance because there’s just so much going around and it also covers basic shots. AKC Pet Insurance covers pretty much all the basics that the dogs need. I treat my dogs for fleas every month, year-round even the winter, because people don’t realize that fleas and ticks are out during the winter as well so I try to protect them and they cover.
I’ve been with another policyholder before and dropped them. AKC Pet Insurance is much more affordable and I really like it. I heard about them through my breeder. We have rescue dogs and we had two breds. My physical therapist also has it for her dog. They cover a lot more than a lot of other places that I have investigated. Only one of my animals has it because they are in very good conditions. You can choose different levels. They cover a lot and there are some exclusions that I’m not thrilled about, but you have to kinda sculpt your own policy.
You can access your policy online or you can call at any time. They’re very quick and if they need something, they e-mail me right away. You can either e-mail, fax or mail your stuff in. Of course, you want your check right away so I always e-mail it or fax it and I get my check right away. It’s 80 or 90%. Brady had one of his shots and they also cover Lyme disease shots. He also had his monthly chewable heartworm medicine and I sent in the information and got a check in a week for the full amount.

I have a pet that I have for a while and she’s close to two. I saw what all the people paid for if anything went wrong with their pets, so I thought I'd get a pet insurance. I went to the AKC website and I assumed that they knew what they were talking about. They're a pretty large company and if they were endorsing something, it should be good. So, I went and got a policy with them and I have it for four months now. Their reps have been very nice and easy-going, too.

We ended up getting a new puppy and the one-month free trial with AKC was part of the whole enrollment. There was one time I may have actually needed it. I called to figure out what was going on but the woman said I needed to call a week prior to activate everything before I had a problem with my dog. So I couldn't even take advantage of it. But the woman was nice. She at least got me enrolled and explained how everything works.
Hello, I am glad we were able to assist you in starting your coverage. I’m sorry there was some confusion with how the 30-Day Certificate works. The AKC Pet Insurance 30-Day Certificate is a benefit of AKC registration. Since it is an insurance policy, it must be activated for coverage to take effect and is not automatically available with the completion of AKC registration. I’m sorry that the insurance was not helpful for this particular incident. I hope that your puppy is doing well now and is staying safe and healthy! Please let us know if you have any more questions or if there’s anything else we can do for you! Feel free to call and ask for Adam or Jasmin.

I registered a Border Collie and then AKC Pet Insurance came up on the computer so I took it. I’m glad I did because right after I got the free insurance, I got into a car accident and my dog was hit by one of the airbags. I didn’t even think to call them, but then I remembered getting it when I registered her, which was shortly before the accident. I called them up and asked them if I was eligible for that and they said yes. I sent in everything and they gave me part of the money back, which was fantastic. Their rep was really good. He told me what I needed to do and he sent me the forms to fill out right away. The process was really easy.
I only had them one month free and I haven't extended. I thought having a pet insurance is a great thing. The more I’m talking to people, the more I’m thinking it will be good. If I have one good dog, it would be worth it, but I have so many dogs and 10 cats and horses, so I don’t know how much I can afford or who I would choose. So, that’s what I’m thinking about right now. Nonetheless, I’ve told a few people to accept the pet insurance when they register their dogs.

It was very expensive and I paid for all the treatments that my dog needed, but it would’ve been nice to have some reimbursement for some of that treatment that I had to pay out. So, I decided that my next dog would have insurance. AKC is so trusted that it made sense that their insurance would be trusted. I did everything online when I got their policy and their website was very user-friendly. I have it for about six weeks now and I haven't used it yet because this puppy is extremely healthy. I would recommend AKC.

My experience with AKC Pet Insurance has been good. My dog is 10 months old and I’ve been with AKC for 10 months too. I had a Schnauzer before him that was 15 years old and Schnauzers are prone to have a lot of issues and I didn’t have insurance with him and I wished I had. So, I just went ahead and got a pet insurance for my new dog since the get-go. I had him neutered and I’ve had a flea and tick and heart medicine with him, and every time I’ve had him to the vet they’ve always reimbursed me quickly.
Having a pet insurance is very valuable, especially with Schnauzers. They have so many issues. People on Facebook had asked me about insurance and I told them who I have insurance with. I told my friends that I’ve had no issues with AKC at all and that they’ve been very quick to answer questions and advise me. Any time I’ve asked for anything, they’ve always been really quick to answer or send me anything in the mail. They’ve been really good with me.

When I registered my dog, I learned about AKC. I was given the 30 days of free veterinarian insurance and it was good. I used the trial and I did not sign up for more insurance as I didn’t want a monthly bill. When I used the trial, I paid $100 out of my pocket for a claim and I felt that my bill was more than that. But when AKC went through it, they said the bill was a $96 thing, and so it was all my bill.
The 30-Day Certificate does indeed have a small deductible of $100. Eligible expenses go toward the deductible, so if the vet bill included items that were not eligible, those would not have gone toward the deductible. We've used it for routine stuff except for some allergy medicine and they did an X-ray to make sure he didn’t have a blockage in his bowel at one point. It turned out to be nothing serious and the vet put him on a prescription dog food. He’s been fine since then. The insurance is worth it. For the first three pets we had, there were issues with kidneys, etcetera when they got to their last couple of years and we found ourselves spending more money at that point. I have a new puppy and I thought now is the time to get an insurance because it might allow us to do more for her as she ages. She's only 21 months old now, so we don't expect a lot of years for it yet. I'm new to this and I'm a retired person on a fixed income, but I want to give the best for my pets as they age. When I first got my dog, I registered him with the AKC and they sent me something in the mail that said, "You get two free months of pet insurance." My dog is now 13 years old so I've had this insurance for 13 years. In the last few months, I've had a lot of claims so I have a lot of experience with them. They have gotten a lot better. When I first had them, they took a long time to pay the reimbursement. But they've gotten quick about it, usually within a week or two. Worst case, it will take them three weeks to pay on the claim.
But I wish they had some website functions. With other pet insurances, you can go to a website, look at your claims, check the status, and submit the claim through an app. But AKC doesn't have anything like that. Basically, you can email them a PDF of your claim and that's it. I have called there quite a few times and some of their customer service people are really good and helpful, but some of them are not. They're professional during our interactions. But sometimes I think I've been given some wrong information. Some of them seemed to understand their product better than others.
My biggest problem with AKC is that they have a very low minimum. They put limits on how they’ll pay out for conditions or for the year of your policy. I have a dog in another policy and she has much better coverage because the limits are much higher. AKC is very restrictive on certain conditions that they won't cover, such as arthritis, while my other dog's policy covers that. AKC doesn't cover acupuncture or chiropractic, but a lot of companies now cover those things. AKC will put limits on how much they'll pay out on every condition, not just for the policy year, but for the whole life of your pet. So I would not recommend AKC. And if I were to get new insurance, I would not use them.

We've had AKC pet insurance for seven years now and it has been extremely valuable for my dog. They’ve covered everything that we’ve needed, and it has paid for itself more than once over. It’s cost-effective and user-friendly.
Filing a claim is easy too. You print out a form, attach the receipt for an office visit, fill out the form with basic information and email it in. In fact, they’ve changed the claim form from needing the doctor’s signature to just needing the office visit receipt. And that has made things a lot easier. It’s a good idea to have, especially in the first year or two when you’re still learning if your pet’s going to have any medical problems or allergies, or anything that would possibly be long-term. As far as their service goes, you go to the vet, you send your forms in and then they reimburse your money for whatever they cover of it, whether it’d be all of it or half of it. It was helpful to me when I needed it and I was happy with what I had when I had it. It all seemed fairly simple and straightforward. I had it for a year and I canceled it after as I didn't feel I needed it at this time. My dog got a clean bill of health, and I just didn’t see the point of paying $70 a month for something I wasn’t using or didn’t have a need for. I have never had pet insurance but it's good to have. I rescued my puppy, Blake, through the pet shelter and he actually came with the trial on AKC Pet Insurance. It’s also a pet shop, but they have a 501(c)(3) through them and they actually advertised the insurance through the adoption, which was a great plus. What made me stick with the insurance was AKC's excellent customer service. Even when I had some questions during my free 30-day trial, they were always prompt and willing to help. They got back to me nicely and always gave me explanations about claims.
I’m a college student and one of the reasons I got the insurance is for unexpected expenses that might arise and that I can’t afford fully. I have a monthly premium in case there’s that emergency that he needs to be covered for. I also want him to have the best care and that's why I invest in insurance. It's been three months and I've had to call and file a claim for my puppy. I did it through the email and they responded very promptly. I would get 80% refunded back to me, which should be paid in a check via mail in 30 days. Usually it takes shorter but they needed to have more documentation for my pet ‘cause it was an emergency clinic. Blake is a rescue so he’s still learning and he’s under 5 months old. He swallowed something that upset his stomach, and he had projectile diarrhea. He got fluids but it was great ‘cause I know I can rely on the insurance company to help me cover what I need, other than my out-of-pocket.
My experience was all positive and I’m very impressed by AKC Pet Insurance. It’s very inclusive too. They’re willing to help and they don’t deny people. Plus they’re really good and professional. AKC Pet Insurance is a great investment and they’re an asset to have in your pet care team. Pet insurance has really changed my whole perspective on things. And if there were more pet companies like PetPartners/AKC, I think there would be better plans for everyone.
Thank you so much for the review, Hayley! So glad we could be there for Blake and we hope he’s doing well!

When I got my dog, I was given a month of insurance through AKC for free. It was easy to sign up and get him all situated. When that one month expired, AKC offered the best deal and coverage for what I was going to pay. I have been a policyholder since August of last year. French Bulldogs have a lot of sensitivities and I have one, so it's an obvious choice for me to have a coverage and I know he's going to need the preventative care that they provide with one of their descender plus programs.
I had to put in a claim right around New Year for some extra reasons that my dog had. Normally, they were quick to turn it around. It was February and I hadn't seen the check come through, so I called them. They were really nice and very responsive. The rep said he would see if the check was issued and would give me a call in a couple of days. Then he gave me a call back in 20 minutes and said that he would get the check issued to me and that everything was good. Then I received it within three business days. It was very quick and efficient and there were no fights, which was nice. The claim was very easy to process and they had a good system installed.
After my dog, fractured his legs, having insurance became very valuable. We made a lot of visits to an orthopedic surgeon. And having the x-rays and the medications he was prescribed covered really helped a lot and gave peace of mind. Thank God I have pet insurance. I love it and it's definitely worth it and I recommend AKC.

AKC Pet Insurance was in there because they give 30 days free so my breeder said to me to sign up for it, see what I think then decide on what I want to do. I’ve never had a pet insurance before for my pets but this puppy is pretty delicate and I thought the best thing to do would be to register her with AKC. She’s seven months old now but she’s less than six pounds. She’s just so little and the potential for her to have some issues are up there. This is also my first female and when I looked at the forms, it said that they cover spaying as well. Their coverage looked really extensive and I liked that.
I looked up AKC and saw a lot of good comments. Plus, AKC is so well-known. I called them and spoke with someone. I liked their answers so we set the plan up. I’ve been a policyholder for five months now and I’ve only used it when she had to go in for a vaccine. My vet does something where we pay a flat fee for either the tax or the doctor then her shots are covered for the rest of her life. I handed my claim form at the vet’s office and they said they would take care of it. So far, I’ve had good luck dealing with AKC.

I have been with AKC Pet Insurance for two years now. It was referred by a breeder. In general, their service has been fine. But recently, my dog came down with a hereditary disease and AKC failed me on that end. But I didn't bother to bring that up with them because they told me that it was their stated policy that they didn't insure dogs with hereditary problems. Other than that, I was very pleased with them overall. But I would tell others to investigate if they have a policy that includes hereditary diseases.
Firstly, I’m sorry your dog developed a hereditary condition at such a young age. We offer add-on coverage for inherited and congenital conditions, however that must be added on prior to the onset of symptoms, so in your case, that would not have been helpful. I’m glad you’re pleased with your coverage overall. We hope your pup is doing well and remains healthy moving forward! Please do not hesitate to reach out to us anytime. I had a German Shepherd who was seriously injured when he was four months old and I decided that I might try and defer some of my pet expenses in the future. Having a pet insurance is very valuable and I've been with AKC Pet Insurance for a couple of years now. Every time I've tried to contact them, their staff has been very helpful, polite, and assistive so, that's a pleasant surprise. My shepherd had some cysts which ended up having to be tested and removed. I thought the cysts were cancerous but they weren't. After I submitted the claim and all the medical records to AKC, they paid out and didn't give me any problems. They were great and provided very good service.

I bought a puppy and the kennel where we got her gave us a 30-day free AKC insurance. That was in September and then we continued it after the 30 days. But I thought that when I registered her, it covered back to the date that we actually assumed ownership from the kennel. I got her some shots and when I submitted that particular bill, AKC declined it because she wasn't covered, which I didn't really understand. So there was a little gap in coverage there. Maybe the kennel should've made it more clear to me.
As an employee benefit before I retired, my dogs had pet insurance through Nationwide although they used to be VPI. I wanted to do something different and I've always had AKC-registered dogs so I knew AKC. I looked at a couple of others, compared them, and decided to stay with AKC. The customer service has been excellent and the turnaround has been good. However, with Nationwide, I was used to having a portal where I could get in to check on the status of claims. Everything was there. That’s the only problem I’ve got. But I can scan and attach things and they get the payment done. Plus their reps are nice and friendly.
I am a big advocate of insurance but I’m not used to using insurance too much until my pets get older. I also know to avoid pre-existing and we have always started when they’re puppies. But this dog has had a few more issues although as a puppy, she came out of the same kennel where we got our last two labradors. I have had to use the insurance more and it's been good.
Thanks for the kind words, Marcia! We will be launching an online customer portal in the near future so be on the lookout. We’re always looking for ways to make things easier for our customers! Best, AKC Pet Insurance

I got my dog in November and the first month with AKC was free then I got my new policy on December 28. I had looked around at some other ones but I decided to stay with AKC. I bought an AKC Shepherd in late November. When I first signed up for AKC, they gave me the free pet insurance and I have used it. I bought a new crate and my pet punctured a hole through her nose. The insurance honestly only covered $11 of $240 that's why I didn't continue with it. I know that they have a monthly plan but it was a free pet insurance. $11 is $11 in my pocket. I didn't continue with the plan because if I were to pay monthly for it and were to have another emergency that was $600, getting $50 back would not be very substantial for putting out a monthly fee. Even so, I'm still very pleased with AKC. I love receiving the emails of all the different things that you can do with the AKC registration. My pet has gone to three different veterinary clinics. They all said she's in excellent shape which I don't know if that's because of AKC or just good breeding. I'm very happy with AKC and already told several people about it.

AKC was very helpful. My credit card keeps on getting compromised so I called them up to give them my new credit card number. I could scan stuff in and they send me a notice that they got it, and then I get paid quickly. Their servicing end has been very good. I’ve been a policy holder for 15 years with my last dog and nine years with my current dog. The insurance was very valuable with my last dog because he got cancer but not as valuable with my current dog. And they are expensive. The prices really skyrocketed from the last dog to my current dog. With the next dog, I will probably research rates again.

I have a purebred German Shepherd that's registered to AKA. Usually, when you register a pet, they send you papers of different pet insurance that you might be interested in. AKC was one of them and they had a good recommendation from AKA. I was going over things that I might need for my dog and AKC had a good policy and rates. The premium was pretty much in my budget. I started with them this month.
I got my pup too young, four weeks old, and he had issues because the breeder that had the momma which I got it from didn't take all that great care with the pup. My dog had worms from the momma’s milk. I was at work and my mom called me and told me my pup was throwing up. I took him to the animal hospital and it cost me $541. I had to pay because they had to keep him overnight, he had to be on hydration fluids and his electrolytes were low. They had to check him for parvo too.
I didn’t know about the insurance and I didn’t know if I would be able to get one seeing that I just had him for four weeks and that happened. But seeing the fact that he was purebred and was registered to AKA, it was best for me to have insurance in case anything like that happens again. I’ve had dogs but I never got insurance because they were a mixed breed.
I find the insurance valuable with the policies and with what I have, I could choose what I wanted to put on my pet's insurance. I told them what I needed and what I didn't need. This morning, I called and they told me that if the vet decides that my puppy is in pain, they can let him sleep away to get him out of the pain. If they break a tooth, it comes with it. I was okay with it. The only thing I was concerned about was that they don’t charge me anything more than what the insurance catered to and they told me no. Those conditions were built in the policy but the other stuff, I could pick and choose what I wanted. That worked pretty great for me.
Also, I spoke to a guy and I spoke to a young lady. Both of them were very nice and I had a good experience. They let me feel comfortable in the freedom I had to pick and choose and they provided an explanation of what came with it and what didn't. They weren’t pushing me to get a type of insurance. They told me, "Whatever works out best for you and your pup.” I liked that.

I'm very happy as far as registering and the whole AKC experience. I've been a policy holder for about three years now. I chose AKC Pet Insurance due to recommendations from my ShareWorld friends. My female dog got into a bunch of fire ants and they really ate her up pretty bad. So, I had to take her to the vet and they had to sedate and clean her up. Then, I filed the claim and they paid two-thirds of it. It's nice knowing that I wouldn't have to pay all of that. I’d recommend pet insurance to everybody. AKC Pet Insurance is easy to use but I wish it was easier to file a claim. I registered my dog with AKC and they sent me a whole bunch of literature and the information for the insurance was in there. I figured that if this was supported by the AKC, they vetted it. I trust the AKC to do the best for dogs and I would imagine they wouldn’t suggest insurance for dogs unless they had vetted it and knew it was good. I had an experience with my other dog that didn’t have insurance. I didn’t want anything to happen to him that I didn’t have the money for right away and I don't want to go out and borrow. It's easier for me to pay every month a little bit than to come up with $5,000 for an operation on a dog because I’m a retiree. I may never use it and I hope I never do but if I ever have to, I at least have it.
The only thing I have against it is it's a little overpriced. They offered different plans and when I started I had their most expensive plan and the deductibles were good. After about a year I decided to get the cheap plan. Then after a year I thought about that and figured it all out. So, I went back to the other plan because it was more than worth the money. It was only about $10 a month more but I got only $500 in deductibles, instead of about $1,000 deductibles. If I’m going to do it, I might as well do it right. So, I did.
I've talked to these couple of gals down in AKC and they're wonderful. They were humming up the insurance place. They answered my questions and they didn't argue with me. They knew exactly what I wanted and they took care of it. When I made the change from the top line to the next one down there was no problem. They didn’t try talking me out of it. Then when I wanted to change it back, they did the same thing and they explained everything to me. Every experience I've had with them was really positive. I’m now an AKC Pet Insurance policyholder for three years and a pet insurance plan is pretty valuable. I could definitely live without it but I feel better having it. If I was still working and making good money, I would probably not do it. But since I'm retired and I'm on a fixed income, I would rather do it. If you think you can use the AKC Pet Insurance and you need it, they're the best.

This is the first time I got a pet insurance and the guy was able to explain it to me in different ways that it was clear to me, how it works and what I wanted for my dog. Also, the information that I've received on a monthly basis or every other week regarding my puppy's development and behaviors has been extremely helpful.
It has been a good feeling to have the insurance. We have another pet which is 5 years old and is a toy poodle. She's been extremely healthy and we never considered getting insurance until this moment. I have peace of mind because our new puppy is a bigger breed and that if anything ever happens it will be taken care of. We first got a donation pet insurance and it didn't work out. Their rates were higher than AKC's and their coverage was even less. Those also made me look into the AKC Pet Insurance. However, I have submitted a claim two weeks ago and I haven't heard anything from it, but I'm hoping that that will be taken care of. I went in to buy a puppy at Petland and although I have never purchased a puppy that expensive, it would be therapeutic for my son who's very special. I bought the package with it and spent $3095 dollars for a Yorkie. That included 30 days AKC insurance and the next pet visit. It already had four shots, a cage and some of the dog food as well. About two and a half weeks later, the puppy started jerking. I had no idea what it was until it foamed at the mouth. That scared me and this was close to midnight on a Saturday. He spent three nights in the pet hospital and pet clinic with IVs. We had to wait a couple of days before he could get an MRI followed by a spinal tap.
I’ve had the puppy for three and a half weeks and during that timeframe, I had contacted the insurance company and we were all in one accord. He was diagnosed with primary seizures. I had a $4000 medical bill and I stayed in touch with Petland and I read their policy. I sent the information to the AKC thinking I would be at least reimbursed the $500 dollars. I got out in the snow, went to the doctors, made all these trips and sent in the documents. Getting a response was supposed to take a few weeks but in the meantime, I got notifications that the insurance was due.
Before the 12th of January, which was when the insurance expired, I called AKC and the young lady was somewhat nice but she was ready to send me to the website. I asked her to just explain to me what I needed to do in order to get the insurance. I was aware there were three or four levels because I looked it up, but she said there were no levels. She said I just had to choose how much I wanted to pay per month. But that didn't really help me out and I began to explain everything that had transpired and she pretty much told me that they didn't cover that.
I had $7500 dollars invested in a puppy and we've fallen in love with it. But what good is having the insurance if they are not going to cover the one essential problem that the puppy's going to have for the rest of his life? I dealt with so much during that timeframe and in my own frustration, I said to the lady, “Thanks, but no thanks.” I was not very happy with AKC and we’ll just have to get another insurance at a later date. People should make sure to get a copy of the AKC policy and to read it thoroughly. They shouldn't let anyone talk them into it until they have a full understanding of what it is about.

We contacted them to figure out how to submit a claim and after we turned in the claim, AKC contacted us and said that we weren't covered. They even said that it was beyond the expiration date of the policy. But it turned out that our dog had gone in on the last day of the policy's effective date. My wife who told AKC that it wasn’t right that they weren't going to cover anything.
So, they researched and told us that they would let us know what they would cover. They contacted us and said that they were going to send us a payment for the expenses that they said they would cover. They ended up covering $240 out of the $800 that we spent. Some thing's better than nothing but it wasn't a very satisfying experience. We had to argue with AKC to get them to say that they were going to cover anything when it was within the terms of the policy.
Pet insurance is important and necessary to have to go to all the experiences with a couple of visits to the vet. Most people have insurance already but you don't think about it when having a pet. It's $130 just to walk in the door of an animal hospital then you have to pay the cost of whatever procedures that will be done. It gets expensive quickly like if a person's going to the hospital and having a pet insurance would be nice in an instance like that.

At that time, I was getting sold on Nationwide. I have them right now for my home and auto liabilities. I knew that Nationwide is like a top, and they should not go wrong. They bought a company for the pet insurance and they did a good job before. So my girlfriend told me to check out reviews about their claims processing because while it doesn't hurt to pay $800 for a premium, everybody can look good on paper and you may get things from coverage that doesn't serve any purpose. I got an online quotation from Nationwide and did compare it with seven other companies of pet insurance. But then before I was about to go and buy it, I Google it up and came across the ConsumerAffairs.
I was really horrified by all the bad reviews about Nationwide. And that’s where I came across AKC, American Kennel Club Pet Insurance. To cut the long story short, I made a PDF for 14 or 15 reviews for the American Kennel Club and they were all 5-star except for one 2-star or 3-star. And that shows the consistency of their professional job and the seriousness and the quality of what they look after each of the reviews. That made my faith stronger. Spending my money is not the problem, the point is you want to get quality and not quantity treatment.
I went to AKC website and had checked all the coverage and compared it with them. It was neck to neck. But in terms of claims processing, Nationwide sucks big time, based on all the negative reviews. And then AKC was literally way too ahead in the game plan based on the ConsumerAffairs review. That's where I made my decision and I just went there and bought it.
I got a call right away and was impressed with their representatives. So far I only had two claims as part of the wellness exam and it includes the GRDR test and then the vaccination. The people at AKC know what they’re doing. They’re very sweet, professional, on the line, and on top of that, they’re very precise and concise to the point. They will tell exactly what you’re looking for. No plus or minus. And I knew that I was in safe hands. For the peace of mind and very excellent coverage, I wouldn’t mind continuing my long-term relationship with the American Kennel Club Pet Insurance.

I registered my purebred English Golden Retriever, Max, through AKC, and they gave me a 30-day insurance thing. About a week later, Max ate something, and I needed it. The veterinary place was great because they filed all the paperwork. I just had to give them the claim form the first time, so it was pretty painless. I didn't have to fill out a bunch of paperwork.
I'm also not paying that much. I'm paying 30 bucks a month on my coverage and I'm getting a decent return on it. I definitely did well on that recent emergency room visit. We had taken Max after hours at the BluePearl, and he had to stay the night and had ultrasounds and x-rays and all this junk. It was 1,500 bucks. After filing it all, I ended up getting about 1,300 bucks back. So, to me, at that point, the insurance had fully paid for itself. It would be great if they could cover wellness visits though. Nevertheless, AKC is great and I renewed with them. I plan on continuing unless coverage totally changes to where it's not as good of a deal.

We bought a Frenchie puppy and we knew he was going to also live with my son part of the time in California. Also, Frenchies get all kinds of health issues sometimes so we went with AKC because of their reputation and we've been with them for almost three years. Last year, I filed a claim for pancreatitis that my dog had. AKC was really good with the claim and explained what was covered and what wasn’t.
In 2016, I filed a claim for pancreatitis that he had and they were really good with the claim and explaining what was covered and what wasn’t. And then just recently, I called back because the dog has allergies and takes allergy medicine prescription daily. He is also on prescription diet food because of pancreatitis. I wanted to know if that was covered and AKC said, possibly it would be, I just need to get some notes from my doctor. Every time I called in, they’ve been very nice, better than medical insurance for people. This is the first dog I’ve had pet insurance on. If I had a mutt, I may not get pet insurance. Pet insurance is very valuable in terms of the unpredictability because when you buy a puppy, you don’t know what’s going to happen as it gets older. But AKC is a very thorough and caring organization that offers a policy without any surprises.

When I registered my dog, I was given free two months of AKC pet insurance, and after that, I kept it. Recently, we had to put our 13-year old dog down. AKC Pet Insurance was really great about it, paying the bills and also the euthanasia part of it. I had two pets on the plan, and when I called up, they took care of everything as far as prorating it and giving us a refund and redoing it for my one dog that survived.
The one thing I notice about pet insurance is, if your breed is predisposed to a disease, nothing is covered. I have Soft-Coated Wheaten Terriers and they’re predisposed to PLE/PLN. So, anything that relates to that is considered hereditary in the pet and it’s not covered. Anytime I had to contact AKC, they’ve been outstanding as far as speaking to me, explaining, and letting me know what’s covered and what’s not. And anytime I had to submit a claim, it has always been processed. Maybe it’s a bit more costly than some of the ones out there but the coverage was good for me. AKC Pet Insurance gave me prompt, courteous attention.

I've been with AKC Pet Insurance for 18 years. I did my research and I found them to be the best, most honest, and very honorable so I went with them and I never switched. My nine-year-old dog Phoebe got insured with AKC ever since she was brought up to me at eight weeks old. She got sick on me two months ago. She was bleeding profusely from the mouth so I brought her to the vet and she was dehydrated, and they ended up keeping her for the day. They ended up telling me that I needed to go to an emergency clinic. So I brought her and they had to give her transfusions. Her blood wasn't clotting and she had no blood platelets.
I contacted AKC because I wasn't sure if this was not a pre-existing condition with Phoebe but I couldn't find my policy. They assured me not to worry about a thing and just do what I had to do for Phoebe and then submit the paperwork, and I did. I'm a true, firm believer of owning pet insurance. There is no way I would own another pet without having pet insurance. And I push for AKC any chance I got.

My breeder offered different insurances and I chose AKC since I knew of them and it's a reputable name that would be providing a reputable insurance. I've been with them for a little over two years and I've had a really great experience with them. My two-year-old dog was diagnosed with irritable bowel syndrome at 11 months as well as bilateral hip dysplasia and AKC has been phenomenal in the coverage of medicines, therapies and cost with specialists, doctors, and surgeons. Unfortunately, doing the applications like filling out the form, getting the signatures and writing the bills can be tedious. It's an easy process once you do it but it's time-consuming to get it done. Other than that, I'm really happy with the policy. When filing claims for my lab, I send things by email and I've had no issues.
The insurance is an invaluable thing to have and everybody should have it, but I know everybody can't afford it. If I got another animal though, without a doubt, it would be put on the same policy. I've heard other people, who have other insurances, have bad experiences. But I've never had a bad experience with AKC. If I had a question about something, I pull them up. If they can't give me an answer right away, they will go to a supervisor and find an answer and call me back. This insurance is the best thing I did for my dog. It's a phenomenal insurance that I would recommend to anybody.

I was an AKC policyholder for 30 days but I didn’t renew it. We didn't feel it was worth the cost since everything that my silver lab needs and requires is not covered based on what I read. And since we're not planning horrible events to happen. Most vets are going to work with me if something bad happens. They're not going to say, “You need to pay $10,000 upfront.” but they're going to work with me and take payments. They'll figure out other options and do what's best for the pet. I had insurance on one of our cats that included the vaccine, neutering and anything maintenance-wise. It was the whole package to cover the healthier pet and would help if ever my cat gets run over by a car. They reimburse or they pay everything except for my copay.

I got my policy for my German Shepherd from AKC Pet Insurance. I looked into it and I was interested. I signed up and I'm very pleased so far. They have good coverage. Before that, I had a pet insurance policy that I wasn't very happy with. What I liked about AKC was the way they sent me the information through mail. I don't like to do a lot of stuff on the computer. The other insurance would only send emails and I prefer getting a snail mail.
Everything is fairly easy as far as using the insurance. You get a claim form and you take it to the vet with you. The vet signs it and they fill out with what they do, and fax it in right away. I'm happy with AKC overall. The people are always friendly when I call. They always answer my questions. Also, having a pet insurance is very valuable. We've had dogs in the past that we've never had pet insurance on. We had a Labrador that we lost back in 2011. She got really sick with Addison's disease and was on really expensive drugs. If we would have had something on her from puppy on, she probably would have been covered. But we decided we were never going to be without insurance ever again.

I've had AKC Pet Insurance for a little more than a month. In my most recent experience, it was very tedious and time-consuming due to the unnecessary duplication of paperwork and the necessity to physically sign a form every time. It's much more tedious than I expected it to be, to the point where for minor visits, I don't bother with them anymore. Which plainly means that my deductible is taken up more slowly, which undoubtedly was their intent. I'm looking around other providers. I can see why they might want a signature at least once. But otherwise, they should be able to take an electronic one. Because I have to go back to the vet to get validations and fax or mail it back them afterwards. But I could take a picture of the bill and send it to them, and that would seem under most circumstances, the best way to deal with this.
Hi Felix,
I’m sorry that you had a negative experience with our claim process. In the past month, we have actually simplified our claim form and we no longer require any signatures—from you or your veterinarian. Again, I’m sorry we couldn’t fill your pet insurance needs. I would encourage you to submit any claims you have for wellness items or visits since your wellness benefits pay out separately from your deductible. If you have any questions about your coverage or the claims process please don’t hesitate to call and ask for Adam. I’d be happy to talk to you in more detail.

I got the policy in 2011 but in 2015, I had to cancel because I lost my job and I couldn't afford to pay for it every month. He’s seven now and the last time we had him at the vet for his checkup and all his shots, we spent $500. With AKC, I pay for well check-up minus a $100 deductible. So I decided that we should get the insurance again just in case anything bad would happen. It is super important to have a pet insurance because we love our dog like a child. It is very valuable to have pet insurance because when my first Yorkie, Coco, got ill, I didn’t have insurance on her and then I went through some time of unemployment and I vowed to myself that I would never let money become an object again about getting my dog medical care. That’s the time when I got Ginger (another Yorkie). I got AKC Pet Insurance for Ginger, that died when she was 15 years old, so I’ve had it for a long time. Since AKC is pricier than the other ones, I only had her covered for injury and illness, but you get what you pay for. I was really impressed with one of the AKC operators when Ginger died and I had to call and cancel her policy. The male operator that I talked to let me sob and cry on the phone about Ginger. He told me to call back anytime, ask to speak to him and he’d speak to me directly. Also, I got a sympathy card from AKC which really meant a lot. It touched my heart.
So when I got it for Buttercup, I got her covered for everything. She’s a Morkie, one quarter Maltese, and three-quarters Yorkie. I originally had her covered under another company, which was significantly cheaper than AKC. But then my vet said that this other firm had a slow turnaround. I haven’t utilized them so I cancelled my policy and asked for a refund on my payment. And then I called AKC up and got Buttercup covered.

My AKC Pet Insurance came with the Rottweiler I got from a breeder. During his first 30 days, he got all of the shots besides the ones that the breeder gave him. It cost $300 and it was all covered. Since then, I renewed the policy and I’ve been with them for 8 months. The policy provides security and it's a good resource in case anything happens but AKC tries and gets out of everything like any other insurance.
My dog got an eye infection and none of that was covered – it was all out of my pocket. But his preventative care is covered. So I might drop my coverage to just preventative care because I don't let him go five feet away from me when he's outside anyway and the only thing that he does when at home is to chew on his toys. What worries me is that whenever he poops outside and I go and take it up, I feel like there are little pieces of plastic from his toys. That's what kind of keeps me on the policy. Also, I don’t like AKC's website because it’s so basic. It’s not up to par on 2017 like I believe it should be if AKC is big in affiliation as they say they are. I still need to call them to change and look at my coverage. Overall, I'm happy I have an AKC pet insurance, but I’m paying $67 a month and that’s a little steep, so I wish I didn't.

Then my six month old puppy had a dislocated hip and the x-rays and the fees amounted to $165. Then they're asking me to buy the insurance. When I asked what my benefit would be under that, the rep told me that with a $100 deductible and some other stuff, I would receive $15 to $20 compensation. And so, I don’t think that’s much of a benefit. If I’m going to be paying $10 a month for insurance which is $120 a year, and then my first claim I send in is going to pay me $15, that is not worth it.
I've had several notifications of the insurance, but I wanted to see what the settlement would be before I'd even consider purchasing. I'm glad I did wait and I'm surely not going to purchase that. I'm going to invest all that time and everything and send in a claim for $150 and get less than 10% back, that is not suitable to me at all. I'm very dissatisfied with that.
Hi Dale,
I’m sorry your dog experienced such a traumatic injury at such a young age. I hope she is feeling better. The 30-Day Certificate is a benefit included with your AKC registration. It is a small policy at no cost to you that gives new puppy owners a little extra assistance in the event of any unexpected mishaps. I’m sorry the reimbursement was not as much as you expected. The $100 deductible only has to be met once per policy period, so in the event your dog needed any additional veterinary care, you would not be subject to the deductible again, resulting in more of a reimbursement. Our full-term policies offer more options for coverage, limits and deductibles. If you were to enroll in an annual policy you would be able to create a plan that fits your needs. Please feel free to call us with any questions or concerns. Ask for Adam, I’d be more than happy to discuss this with you further.

When I purchased the dogs from the breeder, she registered them with AKC and then, a recommendation coupon came with it. It was the first time I got an AKC dog and for catastrophic situations, it would be good to have. Since that was what AKC put in their materials, I decided to go with it. I’ve been a policyholder with AKC for 12 years. I started with their top tier and then as the dogs got older, I went down a couple of notches because of the cost. But both the dogs are gone now. They ended up being horribly ill for 12 years. Both of them had lots of major issues which cost $4,000 at a pop. PetPartners was fantastic. They walked me through everything and took into consideration my personal issues. They stepped up and helped me out whenever possible. In the latter years, I was so happy with them and so thankful that for the last five years I've been sending them gift baskets at Christmas. You usually don’t hear about that with insurance companies.
I told my primary physician, my friends, anybody and everybody that has dogs who wants to talk about dogs and insurance that “This is the company.” AKC Pet Insurance is always great, they never failed me and made accommodations for me. I had issues of my own then I dropped the ball and they treated me like family. They didn’t treat me like a customer. They paid out like $12,000 to $20,000 over the course of 12 years and hundreds of claims. It was a plethora of issues over and over again. Same song, different verse. One dog went blind, the other dog’s hips went out, two eye injuries over the years and sepsis from the blindness. They were always fast, never gave me any hassles nor questioned anything and no issues at all. When they heard about the dogs, they expressed their condolences in a heartfelt way. No insurance company can do more than these guys did and the experience was better than anything I could have ever imagined.

I availed them to make sure if my English Bulldog had any problems it would help pay for unknown expenses. This is pretty valuable for me because I am pretty attached to my dog. The people I have talked to were nice. I had taken my dog in because of cherry eye but I still haven't gotten paid for it.

The puppy I bought was a registered AKC golden retriever and I bought the AKC Pet Insurance because of its price. I've had pet plans, insurance on my horse, a pet insurance for my other golden retriever, which I pay $1,400 a year, and compared to these, AKC Pet Insurance is significantly priced lower. They're probably the cheapest on the market. I haven't had problems with them. They are responsive and are timely in reimbursements. I can always talk to somebody on the phone and they do not give me a runaround. I also enjoy the newsletters, which are good.
When my puppy had major surgery, I called them on the phone and they were helpful and were able to answer all of my questions. They give you an explanation of what they're paying for and what they're not. I would recommend them and I'll renew with them. However, sometimes they are inconsistent. The first claim that went in, they sent me an email saying they processed it. My last two claims, there was no correspondence. But things still fell through the cracks.

We’ve always had German Shepherds and always registered them through AKC, and I figured that they have good insurance. Having pet insurance is a necessity now and especially since German Shepherds can have hip dysplasia and degenerative myelopathy, and I wanted something in place in case that happens. I haven't used the insurance yet but everything’s been fine so far.

I registered my full-bred Lab and got him checked, then I was sent something that said "Free trial. This is what would be covered." I got a free trial run from AKC Pet Insurance and they were wonderful. When I called, I didn't sit for 10 minutes trying to push buttons. I talked to people and they're really friendly, nice and tried to walk me through everything. It was really easy and I appreciated it because my computer’s down. Where I could sign up, I couldn’t get on the link, which is the why the gal sent me paperwork to go over. That way, when I go over it with my husband and call back, and they’ll help me get it set up. Everything’s above and beyond. They explained very well when we started about three months ago.
I liked the idea that the insurance covered shots, but I wasn’t sure on what to get for x-rays 'cause my Lab developed something wrong with his leg. The doctor thinks it's because he's growing so fast. When they did the x-ray, they couldn’t see anything. I've had dogs my whole life and I've never had anything major go wrong with any animals. I've never had pet insurance, but because my Lab is full-bred and I paid money for him, I felt like he needed extra care. This is all new to me and I'm glad to get phone calls and emails like when they finally got the stuff from my vet. We're putting it towards the deductible. However, we've been so busy with a lot of stuff going on and it lapsed. Overall, our experience has been excellent. The big thing is being able to talk to people right away 'cause you don't find that very often anymore.

Every other policy only covered an injury or an incident but didn’t include the checkups. But, AKC Pet Insurance had both accident and wellness coverage so we signed up with them when I had gotten a new puppy. Having a pet insurance is the most valuable. Every time I call, which has only been twice, the people were very knowledgeable and I like that. They also make you feel comfortable and they work with you. It has been pleasant, easy, and quick.

We’ve been a policyholder of AKC Pet Insurance for 14 years. This is the insurance we have for our dog so we just kept it rolling forward. Prior to that dog, we had another one that was ill and we ran into huge medical bills over the cost of his life. AKC's deductible is reasonable and I’m happy with it.

Pet insurance is a very nice thing to have in general. It's not imperative that I would have it but it certainly is a nice cushion to fall back on if they have something major that is going to be very costly. I have a golden retriever for 14 years who had many times visited the vet and it was costly. So, I decided that this time I'm going to get pet insurance. AKC Pet Insurance was the easiest one when it came up. There's pet insurance that is provided by my employer but I couldn't pick it up until next October. So being able to do it through AKC right away and get it right in place was very convenient. The set up process was fine and thus far, I've been very pleased with AKC.

We have had a Bichon and we've heard that they're known for having certain kind of issues and so we didn’t wanna take any chances. We wanted to make sure we had insurance for the dog in case something happened. I saw AKC Pet Insurance online and it was reasonably priced for what I could get and what it covered. And so, I signed up for it. We've had it for a few years now and had opportunities to make some claims and there had been no issues with the claims. Filing was very easy, all we had to do is fax it in. They’ve paid promptly and fairly. So, I am satisfied with it.

I signed up with AKC Pet Insurance's free 30-day trial. I wanted to be on the safe side just in case an accident happens. Friends have had dogs that have gotten out on the road and have gotten ran over which happened with my pup on April 1st of 2017. She was at a friend’s house and got out on the road and got ran over. The injuries that she sustained caused her death. It was awful.
Setting up with them and getting started wasn't difficult at all. When I sent in the claim, I sent it to the wrong address and I hadn’t heard anything. I inquired whether they had received it or not and that’s when I realized that I had sent it to the wrong address. I had to submit it to the right address and I heard back from them. I discovered that even on a 30-day free trial, it doesn’t cover anything. It doesn’t cover emergency vets and cremation but it covered the X-ray. The customer service that I received to set it up and file the claim was excellent. I just wasn’t very pleased with the coverage.

I was registering my poodle when I received him as a puppy. I wanted to get his lineage and that’s how I found out about AKC Pet Insurance. I used to work in the disability insurance industry so I know the advantages of having coverage. It is very valuable because if he gets sick or have surgery, it will cost me thousands of dollars. The coverage would save me a great deal of money. I had temporary insurance so I was looking into applying for a more permanent policy for my pet. I called because I had a couple of questions regarding the coverage and the response was immediate, very helpful, very knowledgeable and very friendly. I was impressed with their customer service and decided that AKC Pet Insurance is the company I want to go with.
However, I was so surprised that the main coverage that I was trying to apply for wasn’t available in the State of Washington. I wasn't able to get the wellness coverage for him that would cover when he gets neutered. That's the only thing I complained. Another thing that I noticed is that there's an awfully long list of things that aren't covered. So, if he hurts one leg, the other leg is not covered because it's considered preexisting. That would be a negative thing because dogs have four legs. It's like I'm stuck to pay for the other three legs.

When I got my dog and took him to the vet the first time I had a $1500 bill which was expensive so I googled online and AKC Pet Insurance was more reasonably priced than the other pet insurance. It's very valuable. I've been with them for almost two years and so far, they were fair. But recently, I went up there to get his pills for flea, tick and heartworm and I don't know if it was not his time to get it but they paid $3 towards the pills, where I thought it would be paid off cause I have the extra plan for wellness. Other than that, they respond quickly and reimburse very fast. They have all different plans in all different places so it depends on what you get. They're very fast, accurate and efficient.

Having a pet insurance is very valuable. It's like having an insurance for yourself. I had a seven-year old Rottweiler mix with no health insurance who died of cancer and I had to pay everything out of pocket. I then started with AKC when it was still Pet Healthcare. After several years, I've heard other people getting other types of insurance which were cheaper than mine. But I have more coverage than theirs and I was very happy with the wellness, the medication and the surgery. I have AKC for 12 years now and my dog had several surgeries, illnesses, wellness checkups and she's on thyroid medicine and incontinence. They've been very kind.
However, I'm disappointed that I wasn't aware that I could have had more insurance for each special incident. And sometimes in getting the insurance coverage, one person will say one thing and one would say another. But overall, I've been very satisfied with AKC. When I call them, they've always answered my questions and they've been very good on the phone.

Poor customer experience. Submitted claim on 2/14/2017 and claim was finalized on 05/09/2017. Every time I would ask for clarification on what the policy covered, I would not get a straight answer. Disappointing that it had to take this long to be finalized and still have not been received benefits yet. I talked with Amy (customer service rep) and she could not tell me where or when I would receive, just that the EOB would be mailed out with the check. I talked to supervisor Adam on 5/2/2017 and he told me that I would receive a email of the EOB the next day and that did not happen; lack of communication. I would recommend looking at all your options before going with this company.

My puppy was registered to the AKC. There was a 30-day trial of the pet insurance and then I just stuck with it. I've been a policyholder for a year now and so far, my experience with them has been good. However, they make up charges for things like if I go in for X-rays and put a $2 medical disposal fee that doesn’t exist which my hospital doesn’t do. That’s the only thing that they can improve on.

When I originally got my little guy, my Oreo, the pet store set up everything and they gave us all the AKC information. I called and we got the pet insurance. We had it for a good year but we didn't use it. So I called a month ago and asked to lower the payments a little bit. I spoke to Rose and she was such a sweetheart. She was able to lower the payments for us. In my experience, AKC has been reliable, friendly, understanding, and accommodating. The customer service has been really nice.

My puppy had a fractured abscessed tooth that was medically required to be removed. I submitted a claim with AKC Pet Insurance but apparently, the insurance won't pay for anything but adult teeth and not puppy teeth. They denied my claim even though it's a medically necessary procedure. They didn't even call me. They just sent an email that said, “It's denied and here is why.” They made some reference and it says, "Only adult K-9 teeth will be covered." So, I'm not very happy that I just prepaid for the entire year.
Hi Erin,
We hope that your little girl has made a full recovery from her fractured tooth. You're correct, in that our policies exclude medical intervention to puppy, or non-permanent, teeth even if medically necessary. According to the Terms and Conditions of your policy, we will cover "medically necessary extractions for permanent broken teeth due to an accident." We apologize if you had any misunderstanding about your coverage. It appears that you chose to receive your policy documents via email and you would have have received them, including your Terms and Conditions, shortly after enrolling.
Additionally, we are sorry that we are not able to personally call each of our policyholders regarding their claims. We would love to be able to provide that service, but it is not possible with the number of claims we process. If you have any questions or need more clarification, we would be more than happy to talk to you. Please don't hesitate to call and ask for the Customer Service Supervisor. Again, we hope that your puppy is back to feeling 100%.

I bought the dog in December and it came with 30 days of insurance. Before it lapsed, I talked with the AKC Pet Insurance people and they explained the programs they had and I made a decision then. Since I never had pet insurance, I was a novice. I didn't understand how it worked and it's difficult because I never did this before. But the young lady explained all of the different programs based on pricing, what it covered, what my deductible would be, and then I chose that fitted my needs. I took it out this time 'cause I paid all money for this dog to make sure that as it grows up it doesn't develop any problems that I can't afford to pay for. The person on the phone helped me put it into terms I could understand so that's what made it easy.

We have had a Shepherd many years before and never had insurance for that dog. Pets can have problems and they can be very expensive if there are serious problems so I would rather pay for pet insurance and make sure that our boys were covered and taken care of. AKC was the only one that was recommended so we went with them. Our old veterinarian was farther than the new veterinarian and there are several people on the street where I live that use the new veterinarian, so we changed. When the dogs had to be re-evaluated for the new vet, they immediately just sent off what they did to the insurance company and we were reimbursed for what was covered immediately.
I’m very happy to have the insurance and we were compensated very quickly after we had a problem or went to the vet. There have been some changes in the coverage and we don’t get compensated as much as before because there is a cut-off time. But I really find that it’s very valuable to have the AKC insurance. Another thing about AKC was that our dog thoroughbred like horses and I felt that they were a very important one to support and to have them support us. Overall, it was an excellent experience.
