I purchased a one time $4.95 search for a number that I suspected for a scam. US Search said they would refund the $4.95 if they could not find the results which they did. I checked my account and noticed they charged a $22.02 membership fee as well. I never signed up for the membership and they refused to refund the fee. I only signed for the one time search. This is a scam as I requested to be contacted back by a supervisor and they refused. They have basically stolen the money and refuse to reach out via phone. Do not ever trust this site, as it is a phony search con scam web page.

After around 24 hours US Search responded to my request said they are processing my refund.
That still doesn't change the poor site design and incomplete and inaccurate report I paid $39.95 for!
However my real gripe now is with consumeraffairs.com

I want to delete this comment they make it difficult.

    Original Review: Oct. 2, 2018

I wanted to get a background check on myself and I decided to give USSearch a try. While I was trying to complete the order there were confusing popups and offers that I had to click away. Just when I thought I was finally ready to complete the order, they placed a LARGE button directly above to the complete order button (which was tiny by comparison). Somehow the big button got clicked on. Now it seems impossible to get a hold of customer service to get things resolved.

(This big button added extra an subscription service of $19.95 a month to my one time order of $39.95).

Moreover the background information they provided me with was not very comprehensive and contained errors. My honest opinion is that they DELIBERATELY make the order page confusing and hard to navigate for customers so that they get extra charges, and then just don't respond in hope that the charges stick! I HIGHLY recommend looking elsewhere for a background report.

This company makes its money on STEALING personal information and providing it to the general public. This type of business should be illegal in the US and should be sued for an amount from which the company (and individuals working there) would never recover from!! The only way this company agrees to remove people's stolen personal information is if they agree to send the company a copy of your DRIVER'S LICENSE!! Further invasion of privacy!! Disgusting, disgraceful that such an enterprise can call itself a "business". Incredible that they have not been sued to kingdom come! I guess that's on the horizon.

I had used USSEARCH once in the past and I was unhappy... they had NOTHING on the person I asked about. I called and they credited my credit card back and at my request my account there was deleted. Sat I wanted to try again... I knew the nightmare stories about recurring monthly charges. I was extra careful not to click on anything that would cause that issue. I placed the order and I got the material and a bill for $39.95. Immediately I started getting concerned about those recurring charges. I called them today. I have to confess they were professional and assured me that $39.95 was a ONE TIME fee and there would not be any recurring charges... BINGO! Case closed. Be careful what you click on and do not fall for OMNISEARCH because I'm sure they are a monthly service.

I had to complete a background check for an IC position. I was responsible for the $25. The beginning of my social is similar to my birthday. I guess when I typed the # I immediately continued with Bday rather than SS #. As soon as I got the info (within seconds) I emailed them for help. They replied with a copy and paste, "Hi Teresa, You will need to reach out to the hiring party for further instructions." I replied again, asking for further info. Again they sent, "Hi Teresa, You will need to reach out to the hiring party for further instructions."

I asked for further clarification rather than a copy and paste, since *I* am paying for the check if they could credit my card so that I could redo the check. I realize this was my fault. I totally get that. But come on, good customer service would see what I'd done and allow me to fix it. However, they are right. I will be letting the IC company know of their business practices. Perhaps they can find a more reliable, customer friendly company to contract with.

As a private investigator, I gave this service at try… To say that I'm not impressed is an understatement. The results of my search did not include known arrests for the subject I was trying to locate and it didn't include current address either. I send their customer service a request for a refund with proof of the information I located. They would not refund but offered a credit for a free (less than useful) search. I will not take the credit. I asked that they close my account (their website doesn't seem to let users do it themselves - or it's well hidden), and that they permanently delete all my information from their records.

I went through the sign-up process, then a pop-up appeared saying my registration could not be completed, and I should call the office during business hours. I went to another site, and got what I needed. I never thought I was signed up with this site, per their own message, yet they have been charging me for the past 3 months, and I just now noticed. This is very deceptive, in my opinion. I won't ever be using them, no matter how long they charge me. There is no order number, because I didn't order anything!

I have used US Search in the past and only once did I ever wonder on their accuracy but never took it any further. I really should have but this last experience was on 5/20/17 when I was helping a friend do a check on someone she met on a dating website I was afraid may be a scammer. We had done some searching on our own for maybe 10 minutes prior to doing an "Advanced Search" through US Search. Glad we did. US Search failed miserably.

It said he had never been divorced and had no criminal record, or Social media contacts to name a few. It was wrong. We easily accessed the state websites for 2 states side by side and found 2 divorces and several contacts with the justice system. One was related to a violation of a domestic order of some sort. Also later I found a Facebook account.

I contacted US Search today 5/22/17 and spoke with "Rose" who argued why they didn't find these things out. She gave me all of a $6.95 refund of the $39.95 I already had paid and said I could have a free search to use in the next years. Hardly a satisfying response for the poor job that was done. I told her I would never use the service again.

I feel that it is false advertising when they make you think they can give you information that you can't get just by doing a google search yourself. After I gave them my credit card the report was wrong the address was wrong. It states that you can get marriage and divorce. It told me the person had never been married. When I called asking for a refund, they told the state does not have public records for these things. I called the town courthouse myself, and was told that anyone can get a copy just not a certified one. I called this place back. All they were willing to do was give me back 6.95 on this. I told them how I felt. It did not matter. Looks like an easy way to scam people out of money because you can't do anything once that credit card is entered.

I called them less than 15 mins after subscribing, free two days is not free. I spent almost 30 minutes on the phone with them. Asked for a complete refund, not just a cancellation of the monthly charges. I did have to argue a bit. I said I would call the BBB and my bank, then suddenly got a confirmation of both the initial "free" fee of $29.95 and the monthly fee of $19.95. ALL very misleading, and like I said, I read ALL of the fine print! They already have the money held in my bank account, so I will have to watch that it does indeed go back.

I wanted a criminal search done to see his background (drugs, sexual predator) since one is around small children. I was told these would only be public, unverified records. I asked the customer service woman to please terminate my subscription and she went into an explanation that it is a 48 hour free trial and on the third day if not cancelled I would be billed. However, I didn't realize USSearch would continue to bill me 19.95 a month forever. I tried to dispute on my credit card, but it said since ussearch had my card number it was a legitimate transaction. This is pure crazy-talk thus I am a bit confused what to do next. Here's hoping some regulator regulates this guy out of business. And I thought misuse of credit card info was the reason we could dispute transactions? Amazing this is allowed to go on both by consumer protections, and now the credit card companies are complicit. If anyone has advice on my next step, I'd be grateful.

The first two names I searched came back with my address as their address. I repeated one to make sure I hadn't made a mistake in the information entry, but again my address was shown. I called customer service and spoke with a young woman whose native language was not English. She said their information comes from publicly available sources, and that their sources showed the person I was searching for lived at my address. I said no, I have lived here for 30 years and this person (who is under 30 years of age) has never lived here and is a total stranger to me. On 5/2/2012, I used this company to do a $0.99 reverse telephone look-up to track down the company that had contacted me. On 5/3/2012, I viewed my bank statement to not only discover the $0.99 charge, but also two additional charges of $19.99 each for two other companies (US Search and Identity Protect). I called my bank and found out these were to be monthly recurring charges. I called the number my bank provided and talked to customer service. They indicated they would take the charges off and they did on 5/4/2012.

On 5/10/2012, these charges again appeared on my bank statement. The bank called and asked about them. The bank had also charged a $32.00 overdraft charge on the account. I called the company and got nothing but arrogance until I indicated I would contact the Ohio attorney general with an internet fraud complaint. They agreed to take the charges off after much argument with three individuals, with the third one informing she was “God” and I could get no higher in the company and then hung up on me. I used the USSearch.com people locator service to find a cousin. I authorized a payment of $2.45 . Of course, all of the addresses and phone numbers I received were old disconnected numbers but it is in the fine print that you pay for their search, not the results. My complaint is that I was billed in addition to the $2.45 a $14 charge which is a recurring monthly charge that I did not authorize. I have an email receipt for the $ 2.45 charge but there is never any mention of a recurring monthly charge of $ 14. When I called in to complain within an hour of this transaction, I was assured that the charge was removed. After checking with my credit card company, the charge is still there.

Additionally, they try to say that included in this monthly service is several searches each month that will not be refunded but you will continue to receive benefits until the end of your billing cycle. I received an email from them stating that my account had been closed but I'm still charged. Everything about this company is deceitful. I looked closely at the checkout process because I'm used to low rent companies trying to trick you into clicking on something that you don't want but they are very unethical in their business practices. I suppose you have to be that way when you really have no product. My concern now is my credit card information. Any company that operates like this is a high risk company for identity theft. This amount of money takes food out of my children's mouths and I was 50 cents away from being charged overdraft fees. It is also inconvenient as I have regular monthly billing set up with my Visa/ATM card and will have to cancel that card and set up new accounts as I believe this company will continue to use my Visa/ATM number as long as they have it.

I paid $39.95 to US Search website to provide their acclaimed "in-depth, quick and accurate" search results. The results were quick but they were certainly not in-depth, nor were they at all accurate.

Their record shows my husband as being married 15 times! To add insult to injury, there was no record of our marriage. Their were multiple incorrect addresses and relative names. Now we know why a bill collector insists on calling for someone who is of no relation to us!

Our concern is that if any potential employers review the kind of absolute erroneous garbage that is listed on this search engine, it can be very detrimental to my husband's career. I would very much like to know how to stop this invasion of privacy. With all of the new government regulations about protection of privacy, how do these websites get away with this absolutely slanderous publication of peoples' lives? We called USSearch.com back in Feb. 2009 to have our personal information removed from their website. They told us to send an email to cservice@ussearch.com with the names and information we wanted removed and it would not be a problem. They did remove the information at that time. On March 4, 2010, we went back to USSearch.com to make sure the information was still removed from the website, but to our surprise, some information was put back on their website. They put our names as being relatives to other people with the same last name.

So we proceeded to call USSearch once again to see how to get this information removed and was told the very same thing just send us an email to cservice@ussearch.com and it will be taken care of. A few hours after sending the email to them, USSearch in return sent us an email thanking us for inquiring about their PrivacyLock service. Which we have no clue what PrivacyLock is until we read the whole email telling us that we would have to pay them $10.00 per year per occurrence to have our information removed. The information they have on us, they say is Public information in which Public information is free! So how can USSearch.com legally make anyone pay them to remove information that should have never been put into cyber space without our consent.

We told them when we called that a lot of the information they had on us and other people we knew was incorrect whether it be someone's age, relatives, etc. They in return told us that they do not publish incorrect information and that we were wrong for telling them so. I think we as people know who we are related to just because someone has the same last name and just maybe they live in the same town does not mean they are related. We know for a fact that some people related or not you do not want your name associated with them due to things they have done in their past.

So, after being told that we do not know who we are related too. We then decided to take matters into our own hands and start filing Complaints with the Federal Trade Commission and with the Better Business Bureau with whom USSearch.com, Inc. does have a company profile and is in good standings with. We also filed with our states Attorney General. We do not know at this time if filing the complaints will do any good, but it sure doesn't hurt to try. If more people would do the same and file complaints against these type of businesses, then maybe just maybe they will be forced to do what is right and that is to remove any information someone does not want to be on USSearch.com's website.

Nowadays, the government is pushing this Privacy Policy which keeps even your own spouse from being able to use your information in any and every way. Having the Privacy policy shoved down our throats every time we want to do something is wrong especially if everyone doesn't have to follow the rules. Is selling information about someone whether it is correct or incorrect following the Privacy Policy Act? The government has a Do-Not-Call Policy why can't we have a Do-Not-Publish Policy? If someone needs public information, then they should have to go to the nearest Courthouse near them to obtain that information in person. It should not be available on the internet.

Just think about having someone angry with you that you were dealing with out of state and they want to get back at you all they have to do is pay someone like USSearch.com and they could be setting on your door step. We have contacted several websites just like USSearch.com that puts people's personal information up for sale and have never been told we have to pay them to remove the information. They have always just asked for the information we wanted removed and it was done no problems whatsoever.

So far, the only company we have come across that refuses to corporate is USSearch.com. Why should anyone have to pay a company to remove information that does not belong to that company. USSearch.com does not pay one red cent for the information they put on their website whether it is correct or not Public information is Public that is true, but publishing information about someone you do not even know is wrong especially when it could cause great trouble. USSearch.com should gladly remove anyone's information that does not want it on their website, no questions asked!

On March 27, 2009, I got online to try to find an old friend and ordered the "one time search" from USSearch.com. An email with my order confirmation and tracking # was received almost instantly and then a second email was received telling me how to access the information they gathered on the person in question. I accessed the information with no problem and saw a $1.95 charge on my credit card a few days later (3/30/09) as I expected.

In June, I saw a $14.00 charge from USSearch.com and after reviewing prior statements, I see that in addition to the $1.95, I was also charged $14.00 in March and each month since (total of 4 months). I contacted the organization and was told that I could only be refunded 3 of the 4 months of $14.00 charges and that I should have received an email clarifying that if I didn't want to have continued membership, I should have contacted the organization within 7 days of initial order. I reiterated the detail provided in the two emails I received from the organization, both on 3/27/09, and the fact that they both clearly stated that I purchased a "one time search". Neither had any reference to my having purchased a membership or the need to contact the company. She restated there was nothing more she could do for me, except to refund $42.00. I asked for a manager and after being transferred 4 times in the next 10 minutes, never reached a manager, but ended up back at customer service with a new rep named Chris.

Chris was very polite and specified after looking up my original (one time search) order # that at the end of placing my order, there is a box where the user must select "yes" or "no" when asked if they want to upgrade and purchase a membership called "search and save" membership. I once again stated that I did not order a membership, but purchased a onetime search, which was clearly reflected on the emails I received from the company in March. Chris tried to transfer me to a manager with no luck and finally (after I had been on the phone with the organization for 30 minutes) he specified that he would go ahead and refund the $56.00 in fees.

It's very interesting that the two customer service staff members each had very different stories about how/why I was charged the $14.00 each month. In addition, Chris initially clarified that the original CSR was being generous, that in such a situation, the company policy was to only refund 50% of any charges. This was reiterated several times in an attempt to get me to accept a partial refund. How many people have they done this to?
