I'm cynical about credit agencies and their cozy relationship with banks and big business arrangements. Credit Karma offers a service to check how they respond to your credit actions and offer free tax preparation, so I find them useful. If you don't have one late payment on Transunion, Equifax, or Experian in your entire history, you can still be seen as a credit risk if they don't need your business. I recently refinanced my mortgage, for a lower rate and payment without taking out any funds, and they dropped my credit score 21 points.
I still have over $200,000 equity, my payment is a hundred dollars less, but those closing costs left me with a slightly higher loan. Equifax is the worst, they got me at 638 and Experian gives me the highest score at 717. Watch out when car dealers run your credit to buy. I got a good offer for my used car with 45000 miles on it for a new car, and cut my payment by $200. So five hard inquiries later, my credit score dipped, and the dealer didn't even choose the one with the lowest rate and payment.
I got a letter from Bank America telling me they offered a payment $30 less which would have been a savings of about a thousand dollars over the life of my 6 year auto loan. So I'm skeptical when companies are getting a rebate or kickback using me on a referral. Even CK sometimes don't make good credit sense when they suggest taking a higher interest rate than you are already paying. So I could only give them 3 stars because their advice isn't always practical and banks and credit card companies referrals is how they derive much of their income.

Credit Karma sells your information whenever they see you're trying to apply for a mortgage or a loan. It is ridiculous that you would use this service to monitor your credit and then they are actively using you to get money. This is not a free service and their credit report has consistently been off by 30-40pts. Many banks and dealerships caution relying on them as your credit score gauge. It is better to find a bank or use Experian directly for credit monitoring. At least then you are getting offers for loans that are a bit more legitimate.

Credit Karma and One Main listed me as having "OUTSTANDING " approval odds of a $5500 loan at 11% interest. I was approved for the loan but when I spoke to the lender, they said 26% interest, not 11%. I would have NEVER dinged my credit report if I knew this was a possibility. I am livid. Do not ding credit based on the loan/credit card offers Credit Karma provides if you're biggest concern is the accuracy of the interest rates.

Do not sign up for a spend account with Credit Karma. I accepted their offer through TurboTax to have tax credits deposited on their card for faster returns and a $50 sign-on bonus. I had no problems until I tried to transfer the money out of the account to my bank in August, 2021. They have since frozen the account, keep asking for more and more information from me, do not follow up on service calls and emails promptly, and have not resolved the problem. They escalated the issue to a department that doesn't have phone support so I cannot communicate with them. I've had thousands of dollars in tax credits held by them, which I believe amounts to fraud. I've submitted a BBB complaint, called the MVB bank, which is connected to Credit Karma but is only able to issue a new case number. Hopefully, I will get my money back, but uncertain at this point. Do not use Credit Karma!

I had been using Credit Karma for a few months and began getting my check deposited. I took my son out for the weekend and when I returned home I noticed there were several charges that were incorrect. So, I disputed those transactions. Without notice, they canceled my debit card, with no way to access my money. So, after 5 days of figuring out my financial mess they put me in I called to see if there was some way for them to help. Nope. On top of that, I found out that after cancelling my card they didn't even go ahead and send me a new one!!!! So, now I have to wait an ADDITIONAL 14 days to get a debit card. Now, I just went and opened an account so I could transfer my money to a new acct. Credit Karma can't connect with their bank for some only God knows reason...so again NO WAY to access my money and NO ONE to help!!!! Do not use their services.

Despite advertising daily updates, this is not true. We paid off a credit card, paid off a mortgage, paid off a vehicle, and paid down the balance on another credit card. Two weeks later none of this was reflected in Credit Karma. They say that they only reflect what the companies report. Really. In two weeks four major companies did not report these changes? Hard to believe. Meanwhile, when you log into Credit Karma you continue to receive all kinds of "special" offers to refinance reflecting old balances. Clearly these offers are in their benefit. Credit Karma is quick to report your debt, but not your debt reduction.

I've been a Credit Karma user for several years, and lately I've noticed that periodically, maybe every 3 months, my TransUnion score drops by 50 points... and the "recent changes" they report are actually that my debt has been reduced! There is no reason for the score to drop by 50 points in one day, when nothing has changed with my accounts, and I have not opened any new accounts. Then a few days later, my score jumps back up by 50 points. I think they are screwing with me trying to get something from me.... but it is annoying and alarming. It's also strange that my score through Chase Credit Journey is quite different, and my score through Wells Fargo is quite different. I really wish this entire thing was more transparent and understandable... HELP, ELIZABETH WARREN!!!

I have had this checking/savings account less than a year with Credit Karma. Signed up through TurboTax and thought this might be good to Montior credit and also their savings had a good percentage rate. Along the way a couple things here and there that were just A little weird but no biggie. So recently My checking account was frozen. I went to use my card and I was never notified and there was no communication via text email Or anything. I called in. They just said to me somebody is looking into it. And they said here's your Case number. Here I am 14 days later!! Today I was Calling in as a not-so-happy customer as anyone could understand because for two weeks now I've had the same situation every time I call in.
Today I Finally get a supervisor And he says that he is even a little upset that it is taking this long and he will try to ask the "specialty group" about it. He would not send me to anybody above him. So when I finally get an email it states that they closed my account? Are you kidding me? This is the worst financial institution or company I've ever dealt with in customer service. I have also Gained fees from bills I had on auto Pay out of this account, And they are not acknowledging that And one of the credit cards is through them. LOL. I recommend never using any services from these people. They messed with my money, they messed with my family by not allowing me to use funds for gas or groceries or anything. They caused a lot of unnecessary fees stress.

Well, to begin with. My TransUnion score has not been updated since May 29, 2021. I was patient and waited until approximately August 6 to report the problem. STILL not resolved, I get no update emails, I have to keep writing back and the stock response is, someone is “reviewing” the problem. Ok, over a month?!? So, I decide to try to cancel account, but I can’t do that because I foolishly opened a Credit Spend account. Even though there is no money in it anymore (foreshadowing?) I was told to call to cancel that. I did so, but SURPRISE SURPRISE, that has to be reviewed too.
The “tech support” here has got to be a bunch of 3rd graders. Then having to “review” if you can close your debit card. I don’t think so. After this review, I am going to the FTC or CFPB. I left CK an email today revoking my permission for them to access my personal information. So, now the ball is in their court. The complaints are ready to be filed. DON’T use CREDIT KARMA, they only use Vantage 3 scores anyway, which misleads a lot of people. BEWARE!

I’ve had this Credit Karma app for a few years now. All it does it take up space on my phone. If you don’t have a great credit score already then this app does nothing for you. No references, the credit information is super inaccurate, it doesn’t show the things I need to better my score. I tried to reach out to customer service but all my emails must have gotten “lost”. I managed to get my own loans that Credit Karma says I wasn’t eligible for. Maybe once upon a time they may of been good, but now that’s like comparing Facebook and MySpace. On the Credit Karma website it states on there that if you pay off accounts on your credit report it will boost your credit score. This is all lies. I paid all my doctors bills and nothing happened. I have them paid for deletion letters but when you email someone their response is that it could happen. There is no way to send anything to Credit Karma for them to send it to TransUnion, or Experian. Basically this is free and it's just to watch over your credit report. I have tried to dispute things with transunion and experian and it states to give it 30 days but it comes back within 3 days give or take that there is nothing they can do. I am glad I did not fork over any extra money for this website.

So I kept seeing my score at Credit Karma and it’s always listed as fair. My score has hovered around 650 for two years. I don’t want to buy a car and get pounded on the interest rates. Their site directs me to many lenders that quote rates at 11-13%. Ouch!!! Well, I wanted to see what better rates a dealership could offer. I went and was SHOCKED! My actual credit score through Experian was 710, Transunion score was 715, Equifax 710. I got a car at 4.3%. Makes you wonder if they lowball scores in order to entice you to sign up for subprime credit and get hammered by fees and interest. Seems quasi sketchy.
I have since gotten a Discover card and have been watching my credit scores through their service (Experian) and still credit karma is almost 50 points lower than the real FICO score I have. Be careful folks l, don’t take the bait when they offer you these ridiculous offers (Credit One, Merrick Bank, Indigo) that charge fees up front and 22-30 % interest because credit karma lowballs your scores. Sign up for one of the bureaus' FICO monitoring and you will be surprised as well!

When I received my debit card I activated it and later on that day, I went to purchase groceries and came back declined. I went online to check my account and everything looked fine then decided to transfer money to my other bank account and noticed a message stating my account is frozen. Anyways, I called customer service and they said they will put my account on “High” priority. Well with all the calls I’ve done, including emails.. Nothing has been done. All they tell me is, "Your accounts are still being reviewed." No one there can tell me why my accounts are frozen. When I email, nothing! No replies. It’s sooo frustrating. First let me say, I used Credit Karma for many years but recently, after accepting a loan invitation by one of Credit Karma Sponsors, I got locked out of my credit Karma Account. I think they compromised my credit. I have used Credit Karma for years. This "popup" about a pre- approval for NetCredit kept showing up that I had very high approval odds. I didn't really need it so I didn't bother for a while. Finally I applied via Credit Karma to NetCredit for the loan. It showed that I was approved. I submitted all requested information. Then a lot of emails kept coming requesting more and more information. I questioned them because it seemed strange. I had never had this problem before after approvals of loans, credit cards etc via Credit Karma. The more I asked questions the worse it got.
They started requesting more and more information. Strange emails back and forth with this lender or whoever it was. They wanted a copy of drivers license. Photos of me. On and on. At first they had told me it was all approved. I reluctantly submitted my photo and DL. Mind you, they had already told me that I had been approved so i was starting to wonder what was going on. . Then they wanted more information. I asked them if this was some kind of scam. Several email back and forth-. It started to seem more like a fishing scam than a loan approval process. They led me to believe that was all I needed was to submit that I.D.
Then whoever these people are wanted me to call them and talk to this person and provide them with more information. At that point, I asked them to destroy my private information because it seemed like some sort of scam and told them I was going to report it. It seemed more and more like a scam all the time. I told them I was afraid it was a scam and I hoped they hadn't compromised my personal and credit information.
A week or so later, I tried to log into my Credit Karma account. I have been using credit Karma for many years. It said my Credit Karma account and been "deactivated". I've tried to log in, change my email address. I can't get back into my own account and it keeps saying I already have an account. I believe these people compromised my credit information. It really left me with a bad feeling the way they kept fishing for information.. I believe this company had something to do with it.
Right now I'm reporting all of this to the State Attorney Generals office because I believe this company had something to do with it. I've been using credit karma for well over a decade without any problems. This isn't a coincidence. I think these people compromised my information. The entire thing was very suspicious. Beware of providing personal information to them. I am in the process of putting a lock on my credit because of this company and what happened. It seems like a scam to me.
As of right now, I can't get back into my own credit profile via credit karma. I have emailed them with no response. I think they've compromised my credit information and someone is using my account information to log into credit karma. I also tried to set up another credit monitoring and the same thing happened. I've never had this problem until this very suspicious thing went down involving NETCREDIT via CREDIT KARMA... BUYER BEWARE..

I have been with Credit Karma about a year now and up until this week I believed that Credit Karma was giving me accurate or close to accurate vantage scores from Trans Union and Equifax. Here is what happened that changed my opinion of Credit Karma. A few days ago one of my creditors reported 3 positive comments to Trans Union, which were; 1) two on time payments were made for January and February; 2) I received a very generous credit increase; 3) my usage decreased from 54% to 6%. Now you would think that with positive comments that my score would jump at lease a point or two, but I was shocked to find my Vantage score dropped 88 points. The reason(s) for the point drop cited were the ones I listed above.
As for my Equafax score it had not changed, but those three items were not reported yet. Two days later when those three positive items were reported to Equifax--the Equifax vantage score shown on Credit Karma showed a 90 point drop and for the same reasons. Needless to say, I was pretty upset and found it difficult to contact anyone at Credit Karma to understand why my scores would have dropped so much. I spent hours checking both of my credit reports and "there were no other reasons" for the score to drop. At that point, I still believed that the error was with Transunion or Equifax and not Credit Karma. I also found it equally frustrating trying to contact someone at those two credit reporting agencies.
The problem is that you can't dispute credit scores, so I finally called Transunion. The person I spoke with at Transunion really wasn't much help, but she did give me a subtle hint that the information on Credit Karma might not be what they have. She also pointed out that Credit Karma and Transunion have no relationship. After trying to sell me a Transunion membership, which I declined she told me that she would send me a copy of my credit report in the mail.
At that point I began to realize that the problem was with Credit Karma. However, I did not want to get locked into a recurring expensive monthly membership directly with Equifax or Transunion just to compare vantage scores. I should mention that I also have a free membership with Experian, but they only give you the FICO score. While all of this with Credit Karma was going on, I did also check my Experian account over the last few days, but Experian did not show those three items reported during that time and my FICO score was unchanged.
Today, I checked my Credit Karma account again and it still showed an 88 point drop for Transunion and 90 point drop for Equifax. After checking Credit Karma, I checked Experian again and I was pleased to see that those three items were now showing on Experian. as expected, those three reported items raised my FICO score two points, which pretty much tells me that my Experian vantage score probably went up as well--what it also tells me is that Credit Karma's scores do not even remotely reflect what the Credit Bureaus actual scores are.
At this point, my feelings about Credit Karma is that they are deceptive, as it is apparent that those vantage scores they claim are from Transunion and Equifax are really scores they probably generate and whatever software program they are using is very much defective.

Take heed of the saying "you get what you pay for". As a Credit Karma subscriber I was pleased to learn that I could file my Federal and NYS return for free and save $80 which is what I paid using Tax Act. I completed the data entry process which I admit was quite straightforward but before filing I printed out a draft PDF of the return. I saw that Part III of Schedule B was left blank and a residency question on the NYS return was answered incorrectly. I got on the support chat and the representative said he would have to get back to me via email.
A couple of days later his response was that they don't support Part III of Schedule B and that I should try to answer the residency question differently. I wrote back that Schedule B part III is a required part of this schedule for all filers who report $1500 or more in interest and/or dividend income and that I get an error message if I try to answer the residency question differently. 5 days later another response arrived stating we don't support Part III of Schedule B and if you can't answer the residency question correctly then perhaps you should look for a different tax return service. Very disappointing but I will be filing my return with Tax Act again and although it will cost me about $80, at least I am assured my return will be accurate and not result in a rejection or audit. Buyer beware!

When we printed the docs in the PDF form, the numbers were totally different. There was nothing ours, only our SS. They said that we earned more than 250.000.00. We wish of course that was true, but it is not. As a result we have to pay this creasy amount to IRS on the money we never saw. We wrote them because there is no way to contact this Karma. They both wanted to charge around an extra $40 to complete my filing (because I had a lottery winning). It truly is a shame since I have used TaxAct exclusively in the past.
The process was easy. Though when I tried to do it through the app on my phone, there were glitches that frustrated me. But when I decided to go to the full website, there was no problem whatsoever. I was informed that it would take a short while for confirmation that my returns were accepted by state and federal, and very happy that I had that confirmation well within 15 minutes.

Credit Karma continued pulling money from my bank account for their new "savings program" after I lost my job. I tried to discontinue the withdrawals, but no longer had access to my work phone so couldn't log in and this was the only option available to verify identity. NO CUSTOMER SERVICE NUMBER AVAILABLE! I used their contact form on their website to report my issue and they wanted me to send photos of my DL and another form of personal id over email, and I told them I would not be doing that for security reasons and someone needed to call me to resolve this issue asap or I would be talking to an attorney.
Someone called me the next day and after many excuses including their program being new, Aaron (Manager) said he would talk with their banking people to see IF he could get my account closed and my savings refunded to my bank on the following Monday. (Yes, Aaron, the fact that my bank account is bleeding money is not important enough for you to take care of this so late on a Friday. Would hate for you to lose your "me time" this weekend. By all means, take your time.) Lo and behold, he was able to confirm my identity over the phone, without my sending photos of my ID's. I asked for a phone number in case I did not see any proof he was doing what he promised on Monday, and he told me he would not give me a number and that further communication would be through email.
I sent a request for update email on Monday and was informed they were working on it. Then, later in the week received an email saying that they were going to close my account and refund my money as I had requested and that I would not be eligible to open a savings account with them in the future. This morning, the day after I received that email, I checked my bank account and I am now almost $400 negative because of this issue. I looked at the details and at least half of that is in the form of overdraft fees because the money wasn't in my account. On top of that, they pulled ANOTHER $100 OUT THE MONDAY HE WAS SUPPOSED TO BE FIXING THE ISSUE!
I believe this is a legal issue because I NEVER gave them permission to pull out money on a Monday when I set the account up. It was set up to pull out money on Thursdays every two weeks, because they were paydays. No idea why they pulled out a random $100 on a random day, but I never approved this transaction and had informed Aaron that Credit Karma was not to pull another cent from my bank account. I have been researching this issue online and have found that Credit Karma has really messed up rolling out this seemingly untested product/service and people are ANGRY.
Businesses don't suddenly decide to go into the banking business without having to comply with all the same regulations and offering the same customer services that are required of an actual bank. There may in fact already be a class action suit. I need help. However, this past year not only did I have to file an amendment because Credit Karma incorrectly calculated my state income taxes and notified me thereof a month after I submitted them (almost doubling the state taxes I had to pay), but my state then assessed me for more taxes than even the amendment said I had to pay. You will get a better rate somewhere else but not with credit karma companies that pay to be on their site.
Secondly, every time I pay off an account I get any email from credit karma asking if I closed the account. Now when you close any account it will cause your credit to drop. I have never closed an account and you can not dispute it with credit karma because they do not have a customer service department. The site is easy to use, offers tips on how to improve your credit, and the information they provided about my accounts was accurate. They offer free tax filing and keep track of your information.
However, the company doesn't just advertise but recommends credit cards you qualify for based on your score. When I started to run into financial difficulty due to a large tax debt I began signing up for the recommended cards to help me juggle my finances and keep my head above water. Before I realized it I had multiple credit cards that were maxed out and it was becoming increasingly hard to meet my minimum obligations. Interestingly enough my score is still in the 540 range. Imagine my shock when I went to apply for an auto loan and the credit they pulled was nearly 200 points less!! Credit Karma has good guidelines but lacks in common sense. They offer products that are too costly. My credit card from a credit union is half the interest rate offered by suggested credit cards. I also obtained a personal loan from one of credit karma' s suggested companies and what a mistake. Went to credit union. Received lower rate and saved over $200 a month. Credit scoring doesn't look at the fact you saved lots of money per month refinancing, on loans and credit cards. They look at the fact you "closed an account". Money is being paid back faster and debt is reduced faster. So instead of being so fast to look at accounts opening and closing. How about looking at what is happening like, lower interest rates on credit cards, personal loans and mortgages. They are too quick to notice new opened accounts and not quick enough to see closed accounts that had higher interest rates.

I wouldn't waste my time signing up for this. It is more frustration than it is worth. As soon as I get a response back, I will be deleting my account.
There is no customer service phone number. Your only means of communication with them is through email, and they NEVER respond. I have tried to call partner companies to attempt to get a hold of someone and the automated systems hang up on you before you can even speak to a person. I am so disappointed with Credit Karma. In Feb 2020, I signed up to use Credit Karma Tax to do my income tax returns online. During that process, the website recommended to me that I should apply for another credit card because credit bureaus look more positively when you have more than one credit card. Unfortunately, I followed that advice and was instantly approved for another credit card. What a mistake that was! My credit score dropped by 34 points. As a result, my credit rating went from Excellent to Very Good. When I was notified by Credit Karma of my credit score change, I researched and found out that Credit Karma gets paid by recommending various lenders they refer you to. My fault for being not doing my normal due caution. As for their tax filing online, that went well. However, I won't be using Credit Karma Tax again. Very unhappy overall.

I have been using Credit Karma for a number of years now. I have made note of my scores and felt confident that the service would let me know if ever there were a problem or issue with my scores, as well as report my scores in a relatively accurate way. As I approached applying for a mortgage, I did so with confidence, because I had been using Credit Karma religiously for so long. Therefore, I was shocked when my report was pulled and my rating was revealed to be 100 fewer points than Credit Karma had reported in that very same week. And I was even more shocked to learn that the reason for this discrepancy was that an old collections agency report had been added, and Credit Karma had not done the very thing they promise to do: notify me of any such changes.
I was eventually able to remove this old report, but it took 45 days, and by then it was too late for my mortgage interest rate, as my home purchase could not be forestalled. So Credit Karma ended up costing me a lot of money, whether that’s through a higher interest rate than I would have had to pay If I had known about this and been able to rectify it before I applied for a mortgage, or it’s through the fees I will have to pay if I choose to eventually refinance. And, in the interim while I was taking care of all of this, my Credit Karma report remained the same. Their report of my rating never caught up with the actual number, leading me to conclude that, in the end this is a worthless service. It may be free, but it cost me a pretty penny.

First I need to provide some background. Due to a medical issue in mid 2011 I was laid off from my job. The company I worked for graciously held my position and paid me for 1 1/2 months until the diagnosis was confirmed. At the time (as now) I received a military retirement check every month. I also receive disability compensation from the VA. Those two monthly amounts covered my house and truck and car payments. I worked to pay for other life "necessities", you know like cable, phone, gas etc. My credit score was in the 725-750 range.
After four months of falling behind on CC debt, I contacted the four companies I had CC's with. Explained my situation to them and was basically told "oh well, that's your problem" So on to next step. Made minimum payments to each, got rid of cable, switched to prepaid cell plan. Kept me afloat for almost a year. Finally realized best option for me was Chap 13. Did so 10/12. Fast forward to 9/17, bankruptcy attorney recommended converting Chap 13 to Chap 7. Bad move but I did not know that at the time.
Worked part time jobs, saved money for two years, worked on my rebuilding my credit. Started with a secured card from NFCU, then a low limit CC with a high APR, Finally bought a house 2/19. Joined CK and have followed their advice, UNTIL NOW. In July 19 my A/C heating unit went out. Had to replace it. No chance for any significant $$'s to be saved yet, (home purchase 5 months ago) so it had to be heavily financed. Anyway CK is recommending that I could save $$$ on interest. I do some research using their site and now I am getting letters of rejection from banks I NEVER applied to. Next step is to unsubscribe from CK and never recommend them again to anyone! My advice is be careful what you do not only with CK but other sites like them!

As a result, I underpaid my taxes by over $5000, and incurred a $1600 penalty a year and a half later. Subsequent searching revealed several threads on Reddit complaining that Credit Karma wasn't calculating any Self Employment Tax on users' returns, so it seems like this was a common issue.

When you pay your creditors on time they raise your scores and then when you use your credit cards they turn around and lower your score for using your card even when you pay it on time. Basically they punish the person because they have a balance. This is not acceptable to do just because you use your credit cards.
Be prepared to see your score go down a lot. A card they promote that you apply for is held against you for using it. They have zero customer service too and when you try to find a telephone contact number, you can't find one. When you finally see a place on their site where you can write to them, your text disappears. You try again and the same thing. You cannot send your question or comment as they don't care to see it. While I always use my PC, I know of others that use their PC and their phone (i.e., different devices), without harassment. When I complain I get mostly canned replies from unattended accounts. What kind of customer service sends replies from unattended accounts? For months I have been denied access without satisfactory explanation.

Well I may be the only person to have something good to say about Credit Karma's scoring process. Last year I went to buy a car a new car at that. When I went into the dealership I checked my Credit Karma score around 590 something. I was sweating bullets because I didn't think I would get approved for the car that that I wanted and I did not LOL. But I did leave with a brand new car because my credit score was really 638. My score was 50 points higher and I've been driving for a year and a half in my brand new car that's not so new anymore. They are inaccurate but I think it goes both ways. Good luck.

My husband and I recently applied for a reverse mortgage. We thought our current credit would be acceptable even though we had a bankruptcy two years ago because we never had a late payment on our home mortgage or our car loans, not even with the bankruptcy, but the loan officer told us she could not find any information at all on any of the standard credit reporting agencies! When we looked at our CREDIT KARMA account we realized that they DID have all the past records for our mortgage payments and car loan payments always being on time, and yes, we passed this information on to the loan officer, who was basically astounded that CREDIT KARMA had that information----made a world of difference in our final proposal for the reverse mortgage. Now, our personal opinion on this is that CREDIT KARMA is doing a better job in favor of CONSUMERS!!

I've had Credit Karma for years and was always impressed with the way they kept me informed with my Credit score and options for increasing it. Until recently I never gave any thought as to the figures being accurate. Right?? Who would? I recently co-signed for a personal loan (at my bank) with my daughter and was informed that my credit score was nowhere near the nu# presented at Credit Karma. Credit Karma showed my score to be ~760 which was pretty good in my opinion. So I'm going on the impression I'm doing well in the credit dept... Right? Wrong!!
When the bank pulled my credit report and brought it into me (in front of my daughter) It was almost 100 points less then what was appearing on the website ~690. I was embarrassed, as well as irritated! I asked the loan officer why the discrepancy??? She told me this happens all the time. People believe that they have a better score than they really do because Credit Karma pulls their reports out of Canada. Not sure what that has to do with it??? But the fact remains however they get these erroneous nu#s for your score???? Dont believe it, because they are not real!!! Fictitious nu#s made up to make you feel good. How does actually help anybody??? So disappointed. :( Will never believe anything on this website again. Being free doesn't help me if it doesn't actually help!!!

I've had it with these so-called "scores". Transunion and Equifax scores drop for no reason. My debt is low and my payments are always on time. This month, both scores dropped 12 points (from Excellent to Good) - with no reason listed under "details". When I look at their recommendations for improving my score I get a long list of credit cards I should apply for. I don't use credit cards because I refuse to pay their interest rates. This manipulation of credit scores is just an attempt to scare me into using a credit card. Don't be bullied into taking out credit cards you don't need. I used Credit Karma's W-2 upload feature, and their software submitted my federal withholding amount as $9, when it was into the thousands. I've used this upload feature for several years with other tax filing services through TurboTax, H&R Block, etc, and that's never happened to me and some of the colleagues I spoke with about this. As a result, while I was waiting for my federal return for the last 3 months, the IRS sent me a whopping bill because they thought I didn’t pay my federal taxes. What’s more? They added on late fees and interest - which is accruing. Every. Day. I had to enter into a payment plan with the IRS because they said it wasn't their fault.
So, I got to wait for precisely 1.5 hours on the phone for the IRS to get to the bottom of the issue. I was supposed to be getting a refund. Why was I being billed for so much? Naturally, the IRS placed the entire blame on me and is holding me accountable for Credit Karma’s software mistake. Where did Credit Karma's software get $9 from? Nowhere on my tax return does it say $9. There’s not even the number nine in my federal withholding at all. Again, I’ve used this W-2 upload feature for many years for myself and relatives, and this has never happened.
Additionally, I wrote to Credit twice about this issue, and their first reply completely did not address my issue or resolve anything. It was a generic response about my taxes being successfully filed... Their second reply told me I should double check everything the W-2 upload feature transfers over. No. Credit Karma is a fintech, like the industry I work in, and they need to have better software that is competitive and works. Period. That's why people file their taxes online - for efficiency and efficacy. If I wanted to spend more time on my taxes, and not automate any process, I would work with a tax specialist to file my taxes with me in person. Alas, I will not be using Credit Karma's services again, and I will make sure all my friends, acquaintances, and colleagues know about this horrible experience.

I took their recommendation to consolidate credit card debt and pay it off through a debt consolidation loan. My 2 cards had $8400 with high interest rates. It was proving tough to get ahead after some poor spending habits. (That's the key, self control.) I paid down 80% of my debt ($8000 approx) with a 3rd party lender at 7%, which saves me a lot of money in interest over 3 years, and rarely use my credit cards now. So they have very low balances, thus making my score jump 40 points in 2 weeks.

Also, Credit Karma's score tracker suggested my score would raise by 100+ points for paying down a certain amount of debt. Paid that debt down about 5 months ago and my score on their site remained unchanged. I think my FICO score changed an appropriate amount, the 75 pt difference. I don't know, I'm so confused. This year, I used their tax filing service. Our returns are fairly simple now (retired), so I was able to complete the federal forms in about an hour or so, and the system did our state returns automatically. I filed on a Tuesday, received confirmation that our returns had been accepted on Wednesday, and had both payments, federal and state, in the bank within two weeks. Simple, free and accurate. Note: I receive no advertising from them as I opted out of that. When you go online with them they advertise various credit cards, but that's "take it or leave it". I've never done one of these before, but after multiple ridiculous discrepancies, I googled "issues with Credit Karma" and found myself here. I signed up for Credit Karma a few years ago because I wanted a free service to keep track of my scores. I've always had high credit scores, so I was appalled at how long my scores were and I worked really hard to try to get them back up by lowering balances and hopefully lowering my debt to income ratio. I hadn't had my credit run in a long time, and I trusted that Credit Karma was accurate in their numbers, so I saw no reason to independently check the scores myself.
I'd just seen it on Credit Karma and it was very low, so when we went in to try to refinance our house, I asked if my credit was going to be a problem. They asked what the score was and I told them. They asked if I'd ever missed a payment and I said no. They said it seemed unusually low for someone who has never missed a payment - even with a high debt to income ratio. My score was more in line with someone who opens and closes cards constantly, rarely makes payments on time, has very limited income, poor credit history, etc. That doesn't describe me at all so I was concerned that maybe my identity had been stolen. The bank said to wait and let them run my credit for a more detailed score.
I received my score from the bank a couple days later and it was almost 100 points HIGHER than my highest Credit Karma score. I logged in to get my own "one free credit report per year" from the big agencies - including the 2 Credit Karma claims they include, and my scores were in line with what the bank had said. One had gone up since then by 30 points because my balance went down by $1000. Credit Karma, in that same time frame, reflected a 10 point drop - from the same credit agency.
I know that Credit Karma has access to my balances and accounts, and I don't think they're scamming people or anything like that, but I do not know where they get their score information from. I have since asked a couple friends and my parents to check theirs, and they had similar experiences. My parents have near perfect credit, and Credit Karma had them in the low 700s. I just have no idea where CK is actually pulling their data from. It's supposed to be your Transunion and Experian scores (I believe), but they're so far off. It's almost like they're guessing what Transunion and Experian would give you for a score without having any actual information to back it up.
