How does State Farm homeowners insurance work?

You can only purchase State Farm homeowners insurance through its network of independent agents. Once you receive a quote, you can choose from three broad tiers of coverage: Essential, Expanded or Premium. You can select add-ons, including flood insurance or earthquake coverage. Once you purchase State Farm homeowners insurance, you’re covered if your home is damaged due to natural disaster, theft or other covered incidents.

What does State Farm homeowners insurance cover?

The standard State Farm homeowners insurance plan provides multiple benefits, including:

  • Dwelling coverage protects the overall structure of your home, including floors, countertops and built-in appliances.
  • Dwelling extension covers structures that are detached from your primary property.
  • Personal liability coverage helps pay for legal fees and medical bills if you’re held responsible for someone being injured on your property.
  • Medical payments coverage helps take care of medical expenses for a guest injured on your property.
  • Loss-of-use coverage handles the cost of a hotel and other necessary expenses if you need to find alternative housing while your home is undergoing repairs.
  • Personal property coverage reimburses you for damaged personal items.

State Farm also has add-ons for those who need extra coverage. Flooding and earthquake coverage are two of the most commonly used add-ons. State Farm add-ons include:

  • Flood insurance provides coverage for natural flooding, which isn’t provided under standard homeowners insurance.
  • Earthquake coverage is not provided on typical homeowners insurance policies but can be added for an additional cost.
  • Full replacement cost covers the actual cost to rebuild your entire home.
  • Home systems protection helps replace several types of home systems, including water filtration systems, air conditioning systems and power generators.
  • Off-premises structures coverage lets you add structures you own that aren’t located on your primary home’s property to your policy.
  • Personal injury liability coverage helps pay for legal costs if someone is injured at your home and the injured party sues you.
  • Sump pump and drain backup covers water damage caused by a faulty sump pump or drain backup.
  • Service lines coverage provides financial protection if underground lines that belong to you need repair or replacement.
  • Umbrella coverage is an extra layer of coverage that protects your assets in a lawsuit. This is a helpful add-on for those with high net worth.
  • Identity theft coverage helps you pay legal fees if your identity is stolen.
  • Energy-efficient upgrade coverage helps pay for the cost if an appliance breaks and you replace it with a more energy-efficient version.
  • Mold coverage helps cover the costs of mold removal.

State Farm home insurance cost

Most policies with State Farm cost between $1,500 a year and $3,000 a year. That comes out to between $125 and $250 a month. More valuable homes typically have annual premiums of $4,000 a year or more. Important factors that affect the cost of your State Farm homeowners insurance include the level of coverage, the value of your home and where you live.

State Farm homeowners insurance FAQ

What does State Farm homeowners insurance not cover?

Standard insurance from State Farm doesn’t cover damage caused by floods or earthquakes. These are two of the most common add-ons people purchase for their homeowners insurance policies, depending on where they live. They’re both worth considering if you think this type of damage is possible. Whatever is not explicitly listed as covered in your policy is not covered.

Does State Farm homeowners insurance cover foundation repair?

It depends. If a natural flood damages your foundation, then foundation repair won’t be covered unless you have purchased flood coverage.

How does State Farm pay homeowners claims?

State Farm can make payments into your bank account, send them in the mail or pay the repairer directly.

Does State Farm homeowners insurance cover water damage?

It depends on the source of the water damage. If the damage comes from a leaking appliance, it’s typically covered. If the cause of damage is a natural flood, you’re only covered if you have a flood damage add-on.

Is State Farm home insurance good?

State Farm offers good coverage for homes. The prices can be a bit high, but the convenient network of agents and multiple available discounts sweeten the deal. Several customers praised the company’s representatives for acting like members of the family when disaster struck.

State Farm was one of the most frustrating companies I’ve ever dealt with. I had a pipe burst in a condo I was renting, which forced an emergency evacuation. I had renters insurance and expected support during a stressful situation. Instead, I got pushback, delays, and denials. My claim was denied, then approved, then denied again after I followed their instructions and submitted additional receipts. No consistency, no accountability just a constant fight. Then came my auto claim, and it was the same story. I needed OEM glass because my vehicle has safety features like lane assist that depend on proper calibration. They tried to push aftermarket glass instead to save money, ignoring the safety concerns. I had to reopen the claim multiple times, and every step felt like they were looking for a reason not to help.

This is not what insurance is supposed to be. When you’re paying for coverage, you expect support—not resistance. Instead of making a difficult situation easier, they made it worse at every turn. I eventually switched to Progressive Corporation and immediately saved over $180 while adding my daughter to the policy. That alone says everything. If you’re considering State Farm, think twice. When you actually need them, don’t expect them to show up. Biggest Scam scam scam.

Horrible service. My home was damaged by freezing pipe burst in December 2025. I was a member more than 7 years. I can't believe how they did me. They denied my plumbing bill. When the damaged was caused from freezing burst pipe. And also I was never got reimbursement for my personal property that was damaged due to the water damage. Then I receive a letter from Michael ** Statefarm specialist saying they will be dropping my insurance due to claim. I will also putting this on my YouTube channel the way Statefarm has been to me. I had to use my credit card to pay the rest of the balance to get my home repaired completely.

I have lost confidence in State Farm after 15+ years, 6+ current policies and paying them 10k+ annually in premiums. Very poor customer service and coming up with unacceptable reasons to deny your claims is their modus operandi. You might as well get a policy with a brand new company... at least there is a likelihood they will treat you well and consider your claim!

Do not buy from this company. I have been with them for over 25 years. Had a water leak in my home. They refused to pay. Sr adjuster Shri ** and adjuster Richard will stall and lie just so they wouldn’t pay the insurance. Overpriced and will steal from you.

We had them for 26 years. We’ve had them we had a little issue with our roof. They wouldn’t cover it. They wouldn’t call us back forever. Then they called us back gave us two or three different people we had to talk to. They wouldn’t even come out and look at it. Total rip off. Don’t do it.

I bought homeowner's insurance from State Farm. To cover major problems. I had a water leak in the shower wall. The diverter valve leaked. Inside the wall. State Farm refused to cover it. Because, They said it was a prolonged leak. They call it homeowner's fault. How can you report, when you don't know it's happening. NEVER seen any water. When I finally seen the water. I shut the leak off! The damage was done. It is the Master bath. I use it everyday! The leak traveled under Travertine stone. Causing Mold in the walls. Again I couldn't see it. How can you say it's the owner's problem? NOT Reimbursing the customer for damage done. Is ridiculous.

Why buy house insurance? At least why buy insurance from State Farm If it doesn't cover your problem. Or tricky statements in the policy that puts the burden on the owner. I asked if water damage was covered. I was told it does. This is why PEOPLE hate insurance companies. They raise our rates Most every year. You CHOOSE. Who YOU want to trust with your home, auto or life.

I cannot find where this falls into but I'm writing about the insurance that covers Home Depot's appliances in the USA. This is the absolute worst company (State Farm, not home depot) that I have ever experienced in my 61 years of living. I will never buy another appliance or any warranty if the insurance falls under SF. I also tell everyone I know to stay away. The procedure in which they run is absolutely horrendous! When you call, there's a different person you speak to every time, sometimes you get transferred to different departments and you have to start all over again telling what happened. When you think you've gotten one step ahead., you speak to someone else who doesn't take the time to read all the notes and puts you back 2 steps. I'm getting irritable just writing this and I haven't dealt with them in months.

When you ask to speak to a supervisor, they make all these promises only to have another agent disregard what was done in the last call. You cannot get in touch with anyone in their corporate office and it is an absolute nightmare to get refunded. I am a patient person, but there were severale time I lost it with their agents and at times felt like I was going to get a heart attack working with these people. At this point, almost a year ago the last I heard was that I was going to get refunded of a refrigerator that I paid over $1700 for, but still I have yet to see any refund from them. I am so reluctant to call them back and wonder if the $1700 is even worth dealing with them again. Worst company I have ever dealt with. I don't know how they are still in business- honestly! I can be reached at ** if anyone who works for this horrid company wants to reach me. Sincerely, bewildered and unhappy customer, to say the least.

I filed a water damage claim for $3,000 or less after having State Farm for 5 years. I received a call from my agent that the underwriters were not going to renew my policy. I have 2 auto insurance policies as well. State Farm is going to lose all of my business and will not recommend them to anyone.

Long-time State Farm Homeowners policy holder in Elfrida, AZ. Discovered significant water damage behind the walls from a hidden slow leak. Filed a claim, but it was denied due to ‘neglect’ and gradual seepage over time. The leak was concealed and not detectable through normal use—no prior signs or warnings existed. This denial has left me with thousands in repair costs after years of on-time payments and no prior claims. Disappointing lack of flexibility for hidden damage issues. Proceed with caution on State Farm for potential concealed water claims.
