About Lemonade Homeowners Insurance

Lemonade offers affordable homeowners insurance that you can purchase entirely online. It also makes dealing with claims a user-friendly process. The company donates unused portions of premiums to charities chosen by policyholders. Lemonade homeowners insurance is not available everywhere in the U.S., but it’s an inexpensive and convenient option for those who can use it.

Pros
  • Quick online quotes
  • Convenient app
  • Affordable policies
Cons
  • Not available in every state
  • Auto insurance bundling not offered in every state

How does Lemonade home insurance work?

Lemonade homeowners insurance includes six types of coverages:

  • Dwelling coverage for your physical house
  • Other structures coverage for things like a fence or shed
  • Personal property coverage for your belongings
  • Loss of use coverage, which covers additional living expenses if your home becomes uninhabitable because of a covered event
  • Liability coverage in case you injure someone or damage someone’s property
  • Medical payments coverage to pay for medical bills if someone is hurt on your property

Lemonade also offers extra coverage for valuables like jewelry, which protects you against damage, theft or accidental loss anywhere. There is no deductible for this coverage.

You can get a fast quote for Lemonade homeowners insurance online or through the company app. You can also use the app to make claims. Lemonade pays claims directly into your bank account; its goal is to pay most claims instantly, but some payouts may take more time.

A unique feature of Lemonade is its Giveback program. The company takes a flat fee each year and donates the funds left after claims and other expenses to nonprofits selected by its customers.

Lemonade homeowners insurance cost

Lemonade’s homeowners insurance varies based on several factors, but policies start as low as $25 a month. The premium depends on where you live, the types and amounts of coverage you choose, the deductible and your insurance history.

Getting a quote online or using the Lemonade app is simple. If you have security devices in your home, such as an alarm system or smoke detectors, you might qualify for a discount. You can also save with Lemonade by bundling home insurance with Lemonade car insurance or Lemonade pet insurance.

What does Lemonade homeowners insurance cover?

Lemonade homeowners insurance covers loss of or damage to the structure of your home and belongings from risks, or “perils.” Policies cover perils including fire, lightning, windstorm, hail, smoke, vandalism, theft and the weight of ice and snow.

Lemonade homeowners insurance also covers exterior structures on your property, your personal liability and medical payments in case someone gets hurt at your home. If your house is damaged by a peril and you have to move out while it’s being rebuilt or repaired, Lemonade pays for additional living expenses like hotel bills.

Policies have deductibles, coverage limits and exclusions. For example, Lemonade doesn’t cover water damage due to a flood, and it generally doesn’t cover damage from termites. If you have valuable items like jewelry, make sure to ask about its extra coverage policies, which are similar to scheduled personal property coverage.

I have never heard of Lemonade, let alone purchased a policy. They still charged me 20 times over the past few months. Pure fraud.

I had a back up issue in my laundry room called to make a claim. Took over a week for someone to get back to me via email. I told them I already fixed everything and would like to drop the claim. They told me it would still be on my record and sent another email stating they would not cover any pre-existing floods in the home for any future event. They also raised my policy at the end of the year.

Worst experience trying to cancel my policy. Several attempts to get a text message and they were of no help. I DO NOT RECOMMEND LEMONADE INSURANCE, not for renters or pet policy. If you can afford going to another insurance company I would.

App or site = Useless. Cannot find way around. Try to see billing invoice loops back to add new policy. Billing is confusing badly. Looks as if you’re charged twice. Had problems with billed before cycle end and messaged cycle end before legitimately ending

Lemonade does automatic renewals of your policy, so make sure to remember this if you switch insurances! They won't cancel your policy if you don't renew. You have to remember to manually go to the app and cancel your policy. This is a big deal, because they won't refund any money if you miss doing this! This means that you could end up paying for a year or more with no hope of a refund! I missed renewing my policy, and did not notice the charge on my credit card statement because I was going through some stressful things at work. The following year, I noticed it and addressed it right away. I was able to recoup my funds for the current year, but they refused to refund me the $193 for the prior year, even though I was able to produce evidence that I had other insurance during that time! The practice of automatic renewals without refunds once the customer catches it is unethical.

We understand how easy it is to miss a renewal reminder, especially during stressful times. Our policies do renew automatically unless cancelled, and we do our best to explain this up front. We’re sorry to hear this led to frustration for you, and appreciate your feedback on where the process felt unclear.

I am with this home insurance company for more than five years without any claim. I was surprised increasing my premium for more than 100%. So I decided to cancel or dropped my home insurance with them. So much more frustration this company still continue charging me my premium. I called my back Bank for help. I do not trust this home insurance & would not recommend this company Lemonade.

We took out a renters insurance policy for our child. There was a kitchen fire, and they have refused to cover damages when the lease was in 2 names, but the policy was in one name. They had absolutely no problem taking the money but gave nothing but the run around on simple damage coverage that was very cut and dry their responsibility.

      Lemonade Homeowners Insurance
      Response from Lemonade Homeowners Insurance

We know situations like this are never easy and we appreciate you sharing your feedback. For renters insurance, it comes down to who’s listed on the policy and whether they're considered liable for a specific incident. If our policyholder wasn’t at fault, we wouldn’t be able to cover the damages according to the terms. We wish we could do more, and if you have further questions, feel free to reach out at fixthis@lemonade.com .

Canceled on me last minute because of the roof being in bad shape, after making me take pictures of every single thing in the house. I got scared so I contacted few roofing companies to evaluate and replace if needed. They told me the roof is in in good shape for another 10-15 years. Go and figure they canceled from a picture I took from far away.

I have been with them for 8 years and from the past 2 years they have been asking me about my roof and to take pics of the exterior. Now they want to take current pics of my interior and I feel that is too invasive. Get your house off of Google Maps and get another insurance company because this company takes and risks nothing because one claim and you are out and not playing their increasingly invasive games you are out. I hope a class action lawsuit is coming soon. Insurance companies are a scam and homeowners should be able to put up a cash deposit instead.
