I was a customer of Progressive short-lived. I would rate them a minus five if I could. A total rip-off scam... I never had so much crap from a company. I paid them full six months then they sent me a cancellation letter stating I didn't report any drivers, as I am the only sole driver, so they sent me another letter with two of the names I never heard of.
I called them to confirm who and how these names were on my record. They said I must report anyone driving or not to be put down as drivers. I told them my agent never asked me, and I gave them those that were in the house who were not drivers and had to argue they were excluded drivers so they said they would agree, but shortly, I got another text saying I was cancelled again. So again I had to go to the underwriters about it and explain it again that I had paid a premium to add these three non-drivers, and got him to admit that they added the stranger's name as their policy to get me to tell them who lived here otherwise, I would have to dispute these strangers. I call this full-blown blackmail...
Anyways, he assured me it was their mistake, but they had just mailed me the cancellation refund check, and I needed to pay them within ten days or about. I wanted to be sure the check was legit because the web billing only stated a refund but not sent back by check, even though I had paid the initial payment via card... I told him I wanted proof of our conversation because it now was the sixth time I had to deal with the underwriters in a month's time, which my agent said he couldn't do. Poor excuse!!
I told him to write up a reinstatement with no laps, and finally got the company to agree. Then, in this period, they kept threatening me to pay up, and mind you, they said I was paid till May 17, and that was my deadline. And then on the 19th, they said I owed them another sum, or they would report me to the collectors' agency, another blackmail. In the meantime I had sent off to the clue and reporting agency that they claimed got those mystery names, and the report was they could not find me period. Funny that I have carried insurance for 37 years with an excellent driving history. What a joke! So do NOT get yourself involved with this joke of a company... just because they promise you low fee coverage, they're full of every dirty trick you can think of.
You will be very sorry for it.... Go to a legit and pay for the real deal. It's worth every extra penny to have a good insurance company who you can count on. I later learned that Progressive will either dump you when a claim comes up or will rob you three to five times higher the next round... Do yourself a favor and get a real insurance Company like American Family or State Farm.... I lost a lot of money and time and had a lot of frustration dealing with this fraudulent company.... Don't fall for it, it's a horrible insurance Company!!!! I would not recommend them to anyone!!!!!

I would not insure a matchbox car with Progressive insurance. From claims to customer service they are the worst. If I could have given them no stars I would have. Horrible!!
Reviewed May 15, 2026
If I could give less than 1 star I would. I was in the car with my 4 year old when we were hit by an off duty police officer who claimed fault immediately. The police were called and their report confirmed the story. However, I had a hard time getting the city he was a police officer for to return my phone calls regarding a claim, so I had to go through my own policy instead. From the get go with Progressive communication was poor, I even called the supervisor multiple times and left voicemails and she couldn’t be bothered to return my phone calls. The rental car situation was a mess and I ended up having to give the car back way before my own car was fixed as I was told I’d have to pay a huge sum out of my own pocket if I kept it longer, making it a nightmare to juggle two jobs and a family with only one vehicle. Eventually my car was fixed after multiple issues along the way, and I was told they would subrogate to get my deductible back.
After months went by without any word I reached back out and was told unhelpfully to just keep waiting. Then I get a letter today stating they can’t get my money back and that I’m basically out of luck. How can you not win a case where a police officer admitted immediate fault? Not only that, this is the second time I have been in an accident when it was not my fault and Progressive has not won my case either time. I will be switching insurance providers and could not be more unsatisfied. Their lack of professionalism and their inability to do their jobs when we pay thousands every year for nothing is unacceptable.

A deer accident that broke off the front drive shaft and scraped up the bottom of the front clip turned into a nightmare by the adjuster whose job is to thwart your claim efforts only, by threats of fraud or legal action and denial of claim? Literally the worst insurance EVER and I have had insurance since 1986!?!

They don't really care about their constituents because they know that they are the last of the cheapest insurance companies that can do whatever they want or go somewhere else and pay more.

I was recently in a minor traffic accident with no tickets given out. My insurance company, Progressive, clearly used this as the opening to increase my rates. I had just received notification two days prior that my premiums were dropping by $28 a month for safe driving. Then this accident happens, no blame to either party determined by the police. But Progressive determined I was at fault, they just couldn’t pass on the opportunity to increase my premiums. I could tell from the first call, they had already made up their minds, and nothing I told them or information I provided matter. It was clear, they were coming after me for a premium increase.

In my experience with Progressive Auto Insurance, has been a nightmare. Over 25 years, I’ve had the unfortunate run of bad experiences with this agency. I’m hearing today by close friends how Progressive has made changes to their insurers, raised their policies 75%. That’s with no issues. How companies stay in business when it’s clear as water, the underhanded crooks will continue to take advantage of any and all their insured drivers. Sooner or later, karma comes to those who do law-abiding people badly.

I was looking for cheaper auto insurance, in Elkin,NC. Went with a quote for Progressive, paid in full for 6 months. Nearing the second month they sent an email bill raising it up to over $2800 more, that I now "owed" them. I have 2 26 year old Rav4's, only needing liability, drive less than 5 miles a day to work, never had an accident or a ticket, been driving over 20 years. They said "We are unable to obtain your driving record, so we are assuming you have no experience." Raising my insurance to nearly $600 a month.
I went online to DMV, paid $18 for my driving record, uploaded it to Progressive, waited, nothing from them. Went online to chat with a lady,- "We have not received any documents from you." I uploaded it again, got a response email a few days later saying they received it, that it would take 2 weeks to respond to. I chatted again to a lady, told her I paid for my DMV driving record that they "couldn't find". She says, "You owe us another $299." I told her to cancel it and I owe them nothing else. Of course I get a paper bill today saying pay it or it's going to collections. STAY AWAY FROM THIS COMPANY!

Instead, Progressive chose to exhaust the entire bodily injury policy limits paying other claimants while allocating absolutely nothing toward my claim — despite already knowing I was an injured party with an active pending demand.
To make matters worse, there was apparently no attempt at an equitable or global settlement among all known injured claimants. I was simply left with nothing after months of communication and documentation. Now I am forced to file complaints with the Texas Department of Insurance, the Texas Attorney General, and the Better Business Bureau just to get answers regarding how this was handled. Consumers should be extremely cautious when dealing with Progressive on injury claims involving multiple parties. Based on my experience, being cooperative and providing documentation does not necessarily mean your claim will be treated fairly or even considered before policy limits are exhausted. I expected professionalism, transparency, and fair claim handling. I received none of those things.

Progressive doesn't handle claims when they are against them. I had a lady hit my car while I was parked, there was almost $800 of damage to it, and they denied my claim because the old lady that hit it, said she didn't. When you have them for insurance, they raise the rates yearly and when asked why, your only answer is that there were a lot of accidents in the area, so insurance goes up. If none of those accidents were mine why would my insurance go up. Do not recommend at all. Worst experience on both ends.

I've been with Progressive insurance for over 20 years with only one large claim in that time period and a very minor one. They will now do anything to get out of a $1600 claim from when my car was backed into by another Progressive client. We even have video evidence. They DO NOT honor loyalty and they have ** coverage if you carry high level insurance.

I am writing this to warn others about Progressive’s 'hook, line, and sinker' tactics. I initially chose Progressive because they offered the best price, but just six months later, my rate jumped by 25% for no reason other than a one-time eSign discount expiring. I attempted to do a 'policy review' with an agent to see how to save money, and it was a complete trap. Even though I provided accurate info showing I’m driving 5,000 FEWER miles per year than they had on file, they used the fact that those miles are for a short 3-mile 'commute' to increase my rate even further.
They literally acknowledged I'm on the road less but tried to charge me more for it. This matches exactly what I’ve seen in countless Better Business Bureau and Reddit complaints: they use deceptive introductory discounts to get you in the door, then hike your rates at renewal while their agents claim they 'don't know' what the new rate will be until it's too late to switch. If you're looking for an honest insurance company that values loyalty, look elsewhere. Progressive is more interested in technicalities and surcharges than actually providing fair coverage.

VERY poor unorganized insurance company. Auto insurance rates kept changing monthly without notice (zero claims) kept charging my account for months after I cancelled my policies. I had to waste hours downloading and emailing statements to them to prove I cancelled the policies and overpaid them.... then a year later learned they sent me to collections over a past due amount that was already paid! I do not recommend Progressive to anyone.

I have been insured with this horrible company for approximately two years, premiums always paid on time. I parked my car under tree during a rain storm and water got into my car damaging my carpet and ceiling cloth in the car. Progressive denied my water damage claim. They said it looked like it was ongoing and it was not ongoing but because I couldn't show receipts, they denied my claim which I find ridiculous. They denied my claim after I paid my premium and had a covered water damage loss and they came up with a reason not to pay me after they promised to pay once I paid my premium. I have since switched my insurance and put a claim in with the state.

We had Progressive auto for about 6 months now. When I signed up, I signed a contract for a guaranteed monthly payment for a year. I checked my banking account 3 months later to find they had drafted $10 more than what we had discussed, and I signed on my contract. I gave them a call, and my agent assured me this was out of their control because there was a raise in the cost of insurance, and according to the contract, they can make changes to the policy without notifying me. Alright, no problem. Last week, I checked my bank statement, and the draft amount was $40 more. I was furious. I haven't had any wrecks, tickets, citations, or anything else on my driving record. I called and was informed that something named CLUE informed them I had a licensed driver living at my address who was not on my policy.
Trying to explain to them that I did not know the woman, and it was not legal or fair to add an entire person to my policy without my authorization, and make me pay for them to be on my insurance, they responded with, in the policy, they are allowed to make changes. So, I decided to try to locate the woman on social media, and was successful. I inboxed her with my number and pleaded with her to call me concerning this urgent situation. She finally did, and I was able to have her on the phone with progressive, and she informed them that she did not know me or live in my house, and offered to send them proof of her own insurance, residency, and anything else they needed, but they refused to take anything we offered to prove their informaton was a lie, false, invalid, untrue, and fraudulent. So, I asked them, so if she were to have a wreck, God forbid, I would be responsible for it, and they said yes.
CLUE is a national database(ai) that gives them information about people. I then replied, no matter what I, a human, say, you will still believe a computer over me? This supervisor replied, "Yes." Of course, now I am searching for new insurance. The lady said she is going to try to sue them because in my progressive app, I have all of her personal information since she was now a forced-added driver(by them), which progressive refused to remove. I am also seeking legal counsel in this matter. WARNING! WARNING! PEOPLE, CHECK YOUR BANK ACCOUNTS, YOUR PROGRESSIVE STATEMENTS, AND APPS.

Progressive would not insure me; they use a company called LexisNexis to generate risk factors and provide a background and MVR check that potentially go back further than the FCRA allows. LexisNexis has several lawsuits against them for faulty information and frequently makes mistakes. I haven't had a traffic violation in 13 years and only 1 at fault accident where nothing was paid out, and I'm deemed high risk to them. There is no telling what LexisNexis reported to them.

Progressive is a fraudulent company and they find ways to increase their profits by scamming customers stating that policy rates increased because firms aren't being submitted in time. I got a updated policy because my old policy during renewal the rates increased so I surfed the web to find out that they were offering a lower rate. Why I didn't receive that in the first place I'll never know. We'll I got the new policy with the discounted rate that excluded my daughter since she had her own coverage. At no time did the representative tell me that I needed to sign a exclusion form. I received a form in the mail asking me to sign the paperwork stating to exclude her. I uploaded the signed document to their company but they said they needed all the paperwork not just the signed copy so they needed to resend me another form by mail again.
I signed it and wrote on the paperwork to exclude my daughter with proof of her insurance so they double billed me and took double payment out of my account today saying I didn't send the information in on time. Mind you I had been in constant conversation with them which should have been logged in. I was complaining about receiving paperwork weekly about the exclusion of my daughter. Now they don't want to take accountability for their error. Now mind I did everything they asked for and what out of all the countless calls did anyone advise me that my daughter was added and I was being charged a additional 700.00 still with them requiring documentation.
My last conversation was on March 25 when I asked underwriting what else could they possibly need then she said it wasn't her department requesting the information. It was customer service. So now I see the pattern. The blame is in every other dept but I'm the one getting screwed for almost 250.00. How do we keep allowing these auto insurance opportunities to scam us out of our money. No help from customer service and the supervisor won't even take calls.
