If you think you are safe because you have Autopay and "bundled" insurance, read this. I am a neurosurgeon and have been a loyal Liberty Mutual customer for years. I recently found out I was uninsured only after being involved in an accident. How they failed: Liberty Mutual transferred my policy to Safeco without my consent. In the process, they shut off my Autopay without telling me. When the new bill from Safeco went unpaid (because they turned off the autopay), they cancelled my policy.
Why you should be terrified: Zero Digital Notice: In 2026, they did not send a single email or text warning me that my coverage was expiring. They claim they "mailed a letter." That letter never arrived. The "Silo" Trap: During the time my auto policy was lapsing, I was on the phone with Liberty Mutual agents regarding my Homeowners insurance. I spoke to a human being who looked at my account, fixed a home insurance issue, and said nothing about my auto insurance being cancelled.
They are happy to take your premiums for years, but when their internal systems fail, they will leave you exposed to massive liability without a courtesy call. Their departments do not talk to each other, and they hide behind antiquated "proof of mailing" laws to avoid accountability. Bottom line: Do not trust Liberty Mutual or Safeco with your financial safety. Check your policy status manually every month, because if their system fails, they will let you drive uninsured without a second thought.

Customer service is awful. They sent mail to my address. I told them it wasn't mine and not to send ANY mail to my home. They said okay and tried to verify my information and I refused to give it. They somehow had my information and sent mail with my name on it. I called to tell them to stop again and the guy started asking for my information, then asked for my card information so I can pay them to send me a gift card.
The guy started speaking and mumbling as if he hated life and I told him I couldn't understand him, so he raised his voice, then started mumbling towards the end and asked for my card information. I told him I still had no idea what he said before that, and he started yelling that I told him to repeat what he said and he repeated it. Then, when I started talking, and he interrupted me and I told him not to do that and to have a good day.
If these people don't stop harassing me, I WILL be filing a LAWSUIT against them. Stop being unprofessional and rude when you're the one bothering us!! Do better. By checking the box below, I am just acknowledging that I have no affiliation with the company, nor was I hired to leave this review. It's saying I HAVE to check the box to leave the review. DO NOT CONTACT ME!!

If you’re considering Liberty Mutual, think twice. My recent experience with their claims handling has been extremely disappointing. After an accident at my own residence — fully captured on video — Liberty Mutual assigned me 20% liability without providing any clear explanation or documentation to support that number. Despite multiple requests, they have refused to share the evidence, internal notes, or guidelines used to justify their decision. The video clearly shows their insured accelerating, following too closely, attempting to pass on a narrow residential street, and failing to use a turn signal. Liberty Mutual ignored these facts while selectively applying Texas law against me.
Their communication has been inconsistent, dismissive, and lacking transparency. When an insurance company can’t explain its own decision-making, that’s a major red flag. Consumers deserve fair treatment, honest evaluations, and accountability — none of which I received here. I would strongly caution anyone relying on Liberty Mutual to handle a claim fairly.

A person who had Liberty Mutual Insurance backed into my car while it was parked on 10/31/25. Claim #**. They admitted fault. I have a witness, pictures, etc. All the adjusters assigned are all on leave and I can't get in touch with anyone to get my car fixed. A Robert ** calls and when I pick up the phone is disconnected. When I try to call back no one answers. I recommend that if you get into an accident with anyone who has this insurance to call the police and have them arrested because this company is a sham.

Here's what you need to know if you don't want to read my in-depth description of my terrible experience with Liberty Mutual: according to JD Power, they rank second to last in customer satisfaction of all car insurance companies in the northwest region. You may be tempted to go with them if they offer you a good price (though we just switched to State Farm and are paying less than half for the same coverage, so chances are they're actually overcharging you too). But ask yourself this: what good is that if they completely botch your claim and then stubbornly refuse to take responsibility for it if you ever need them?
I got sideswiped while I was fully stopped at a stoplight in June, but my claims agent didn't believe my account of the accident and initially held me liable for the accident. She was very dismissive and adversarial in the phone conversation informing me of this decision. I found out months later that even though she had dash cam footage of the incident, she somehow didn't review the part where the actual accident occurred. Fortunately, her supervisor reviewed the footage and pointed out that what I'd reported was 100% accurate and that I wasn't at all at fault for the accident.
Once they finally had the full picture and had come around to my account of the accident, my claim went to arbitration and they found in my favor. Frustratingly, they didn't communicate this to me at all, so I spent months thinking that I'd been found liable and had no idea that anything had changed with my case. I found out when I got a payment reimbursing me for my deductible, which was a nice surprise, but definitely didn't make up for being gaslit for months.
I reached out to my agent for an explanation, but she would only send back very short, terse responses that didn't answer my questions. Finally I asked to put in a complaint with customer support and her supervisor wrote back, informing me that she had reviewed the dash cam footage and corrected agent about what happened and that she mentioned that in the future agent should be more active in communicating what's going on in a claim.
But it was a very brief boilerplate message with no offer to talk further, no desire to follow up or get more information, no explanation for how I could go months thinking I was at fault when the opposite was the case or that my case had changed drastically from what I had last been told. Certainly no attempt to make things right or any concrete assurances that something similar wouldn't happen again. I told her that I'd lost faith in Liberty Mutual to represent my interests or advocate on my behalf. No response to that.
In response to my negative review on another site, a member of Liberty Mutual's Presidential Service Team reached out and he was very nice. But it was like pulling teeth for him to admit that Liberty Mutual had made any sort of mistake in the first place by not believing my account of the accident and not watching the full dash cam footage and barely catching that mistake at all. All he could say is that he would add that to my agent's coaching file and that he "hoped" she wouldn't make a mistake like that in the future.
The part I found most concerning was that when I told him I worked really hard to try and handle this privately but that their system made it impossible to make a formal complaint to a customer service representative and the only reason I'd been put in contact with him was because I wrote a negative review, he said he was sorry for my inconvenience, but he did not acknowledge that the system is difficult to navigate or that anything could be done to make it easier. So I can only conclude that the system is designed that way intentionally, so customers can't give them feedback. So don't expect Liberty Mutual to do anything if you ever have any issues with them. Their system is designed to prevent just that. I have lost faith in Liberty Mutual to represent my interests, and I would strongly recommend any potential customer to look elsewhere.

My recent claims experience has been very disappointing. After another driver backed into me, my car requires nine days of repairs. I had to miss work to manage the situation, and when I inquired about reimbursement for my lost time, the claims agent informed me that they would not provide compensation. While I understand company policies, the agent’s response was unnecessarily rude and dismissive. Overall, the process has been inconvenient and frustrating, and I would hope for more professionalism and empathy in future interactions.

I am writing to formally address my ongoing claim, which was opened on May 6, 2025. Although Liberty Mutual has acknowledged responsibility for this claim, I am extremely concerned by the lack of progress and meaningful action. Initial Submission: Claim #**: May 6, 2025: I sent an email to Michelle ** with all the requested attachments (photos, quotes, and estimates).
Follow-Up Emails: May 9, 2025: I followed up to confirm receipt and request a status update. May 26, 2025: Another follow-up requesting an update. June 10, 2025: Requested an update on the claim, referencing the claim number. July 3, 2025: Asked about the status of the repair check and inquired about a rental car. July 9, 2025: Sent another follow-up for an update. July 23, 2025: Expressed frustration, requested next steps, and mentioned willingness to escalate if necessary. August 18, 2025: Left another voicemail, warned of escalation to the California Insurance Bureau if no response by Wednesday, and noted my detailed log of communications. September 2, 2025: Sent a final follow-up asking for any updates.
In addition to the emails, I made two weekly follow-up calls and voicemails from May through September, with most calls resulting in voicemail and only two actual conversations, both of which resulted in unfulfilled promises.

I had an automobile accident and filed my insurance claim with Liberty Mutual (LM). LM directed me to take my car to Serpentini Willoughby Hills, its business partner garage. I drove the car to the garage, as instructed by LM and was told the car was being repaired. I did not have rental coverage and rented a car out-of-pocket. After about two weeks, I called the garage for an ETA on repairs and was told that it was "locked up as a total loss" the day after I brough it in. When I called LM because my app indicated that the car was being repaired, LM agent didn't have any record of the total loss. I had to beg the agent to call the garage for clarification.
According to LM agent, the garage did not appropriately upload their request and so LM never received it. Agent said the car would be repaired. It took another two weeks for repairs. When I called on the estimated completion date to ask about it, I was told that the car was finished days before but "just died" and they couldn't figure out why. Serpentini said they were awaiting approval to have the car towed to a Nissan dealership for troubleshooting. The car sat at Serpentini for several more days before being towed to Nissan. When I expressed to LM that I should not have to cover the full cost of rental considering all the mishaps of its garage partner, LM agent indicated that they would help with some of the cost of the rental; that I should pay the invoice and then send the invoice to her.
After several days, I heard from LM that Nissan indicated that the problem was the starter and LM assessed that it was not part of the accident so would not be covered. I had a vehicle inspection report from mid-May (a month before the accident) that indicated that the battery, starter, and alternator were all in good condition prior to the accident and associated repairs. LM didn't care and I had to pay $1,200+ out of pocket for an aftermarket starter before Serpentini would release my car. Once I finally did get my car back--now six weeks into the claim--I paid for the rental and sent the invoice to LM as instructed. LM responded a week later that they would not cover any of the rental as the agent previously told me they would. LM does not care about its members. Be warned.

I was shopping for cheaper rates and Liberty Mutual approached me to earn my business. I told them what I want to pay and not to waste my time otherwise. Like I was talking to the walls. Or tell them to waste my time. I am paying 177 for two cars with Progressive. I want to pay less. Only one car requires full coverage. They insisted on talking to me. Guess what: they gave me a rate of 351/month. And said that to me with a straight face. I told them not to waste my time. And they sure did. Incompetency coupled with disrespect.

Liberty is a fraudulent operation with questionable accounting practices. Their calculations for my totaled VW changed with every email, often in their favor, and lacked accountability. My car was totaled through no fault of my own, and insurance is meant to mitigate such losses, which is not what I experienced with Liberty Mutual. Far from ensuring my protection, they sought to deny me fair compensation for my loss.
Their claims representatives were unpredictable, seemingly deriving satisfaction from my discomfort. It is disheartening to encounter a company so focused on maximizing profit at the expense of fair claim payouts. Melissa **, the Liberty Claims Team Manager, appeared to revel in the power of denying rightful settlements, which is extremely distressing.
Having paid my substantial insurance premiums to Liberty on time for 5 years, totaling over $25,000, it is disappointing to see them renege on their promise to protect my investment. A company like this is not acting in the true spirit of insurance; they seem designed to collect premiums and minimize payouts without any real accountability or concern for their clients. I would advise anyone to think carefully before purchasing insurance from Liberty Mutual.

I've had Liberty for 4 years. In that time, I've been in two accidents which were both determined to be the other driver's fault. Liberty was decent to work with which is why I'm giving them three stars. In each experience, they covered the costs and basically did the bare minimum in terms of communication and urgency. They are good about making the claim, helping with a tow and the immediate coordination. Everything after that is a drag-out affair
Recommendations: 1) Ask the auto shops in your area which insurance company is best to work with. 2) Read the fine print on the rental car coverage. It's not that it's bad, you just have to understand how it works. I did not feel intentionally ripped off, it was just confusing. 3) There are savings if you use their app and let it track your speed etc. That was a cool perk and appreciated. I'm still insured by them, but my expectations are low for insurance companies. Also their commercials are annoying and play too much on MLB.TV. 3 stars

I added Towing to my Insurance and when I actually needed the service Liberty Mutual didn’t provide the service. I then had to pay an outside towing service. Liberty Mutual refuses to remove the Tow claim from my account. This is causing me to be stuck with Liberty Mutual, my premium is higher with other insurance companies because of the towing claim. Liberty Mutual doesn’t disclose that having a tow claim brings your premium up. I’m paying $570 a month for partial coverage which is ridiculous! Was told by Allstate and others that it takes 3 years for the tow claim to drop off my account.

After 3 years of on time payments with Liberty Mutual I miss 1 payment due to my checking account and debit card being changed due to fraud. They sent my account to collections who states I owe $900. Are these people high?? I was paying monthly and missed 1 month which was $298 dollars. I didn’t even cancel as I planned to just make up the payment when my next bill was due. I am so mad!! I didn’t even call LM as I’m sure I’d get nowhere and just get more frustrated! Who sends people to collections after 1 month?? Especially if the person had a good payment history with them. I wasn’t a priority since I don’t have high end cars that require the highest coverage.
The real Kicker is the lady in collections said that I need to PAY THEM BACK THE DISCOUNTS! I have never heard that in 45 years of driving. So the military discount that my daughter got needs to be paid back for the year.. wow! And this is the company Navy Federal used for its customers. Anyway, I refuse to pay 900$.. I filed an auto insurance claim with Liberty Mutual after my vehicle was damaged in a collision in December 2024. The company issued a preliminary estimate that did not include all visible, documented damage—including damage identified by a certified repair facility. Despite multiple requests, Liberty Mutual refused to revise the estimate upfront and instead insisted I authorize repairs based on the incomplete estimate and rely on post-repair supplements. They also implied the process would be smoother if I used one of their preferred network shops, which raised concerns about pressure and my right to choose my own repair facility. When I declined those terms, they indicated they would consider the claim “inactive and resolved,” despite the dispute being ongoing.
I attempted to resolve the issue professionally through multiple channels, including Liberty Mutual’s internal escalation teams and the Better Business Bureau. The company ultimately refused to address the core issues and closed the matter without a resolution. The case is now under formal review with the Ohio Department of Insurance. I cannot recommend Liberty Mutual based on this experience and will be moving all of my insurance coverage elsewhere.

Liberty Mutual Car Insurance is a thieving Lying corrupt Company in my opinion. I attempted to add another vehicle to my policy and they would not add it because they considered it a commercial vehicle. My bill was paid in full on the first of the month, on the 5th of the month I canceled because I found another company to get all of my vehicles on one policy. After paying my bill of 199 dollars which covered me to the next month and only using Liberty Mutual for 4.1 days they refunded me 8 dollars. I hope this company experiences massive loss of revenue and customers. They absolutely suck. Karma is as Karma was.

I was with Liberty Mutual for a couple of years yet. Had to leave them immediately after they believed a scam, and even after I beat it in court and had my case dismissed this company, Liberty Mutual still filed that I was in a wreck. And it was my fault. Let me start from the beginning. Imagine somebody running into your car while it is parked, you don't realize it as you walk out. Get in your car drive away until a couple of days later. When Liberty Mutual calls me out of the blue and says, there is a claim against me. Very, very long story short, because I found out everything in hindsight, so much later. Somebody hit my car while it was parked and then so they didn't have to pay for a rental car accident. They parked immediately, waited for me to come out of the building. I was in and followed me. Took a picture of my license plate and called the police traffic division. With a story that I just hit and ran.
Now, obviously this person's lies upon lies caught up with them and halfway through court after experiencing this for half a year going to court over and over the judge dismissed my case. Because the person that claimed I hit them was caught in a lie. Yet, even though I have these dismissal papers, which I will show with this review, Liberty Mutual chose to report that I was an erect. So of course, you know what that does it makes it impossible for me to get insurance. Now please do not get liberty insurance as your insurance. What folks have to do is look for mom and pop shops, stop going for the big companies. They don't care about you. All they care about is getting more money from you.

This company is completely fraudulent. They added a fully insured person to my policy without my consent and backcharged me for several months stating this person needed to be insured from a specific date. These charges totaled $2,000 and my regular monthly insurance was only $280. They justified this by stating they mailed me a letter that I never responded to, so I was given notice of this involuntary additional person to my policy and never responded. I never saw this letter, nor did I ever believe this was possible. No one called me to make sure I received proper notice. The letter wasn't certified. They kept calling it a legal letter. Well, if it is legal then shouldn't I have been served proper notice. Just because you have found a loophole to get away with stealing doesn't mean you should steal.
If you wanted to notify someone you can go about that in ways that are more official to make certain someone is aware of DRASTIC involuntary changes to your policy. I don't care how you spin it as a company. This is FRAUD, and I will never deal with them again. I can only imagine how they deal with claims. "Oh, we mailed you a letter about your claim and you didn't respond so now we don't have to pay it." Please Don't count on this company. I called customer service several times and they always said, "Someone will call you in 72 hours," and not one time did I receive a call back. These people are not a real insurance company. They are just here to steal and take and clearly, they do not care the slightest about the consumer.

LUDICROUS! Liberty Mutual charged me for vehicle rental coverage for a vehicle I requested to be insured under storage-only insurance. This was a policy change I requested approximately a year or so ago. Why do I need rental coverage on a car in storage that I don’t drive. I was told I could get a rental car, with the coverage, if it was damaged while in storage. I don’t drive it so why do I need rental coverage. They told me I had to verbally request rental coverage when I changed my policy because rental coverage was on my original plan. I was not told it would not be removed and not asked if I wanted to remove it. Utterly ridiculous. I feel scammed.
They don’t tell you or ask you about it, so make sure you ask for it to be removed. If you forget or don’t know to ask, they will NOT reimburse you for that unwanted coverage. Liberty Mutual…you should be upfront with your customers and don’t charge for unnecessary coverage. Oh, and when I called two weeks ago, the rep said it would be removed. Not the case! It took a second call to get it removed and for someone to explain they don’t automatically remove during my specific policy change. Terrible business practices Liberty Mutual!

I’ve been with Liberty Mutual for YEARS for both of my cars and my house and renters over the years and they have gone DOWNHILL fast. No support for their loyal clients and close to impossible to get an actual human on the phone these days. Did not help me when I had a windshield replacement done under their policy that was totally mishandled. They left gaps in the windshield so it rains into the car, it rattles, they damaged other parts of the car while installing and they told me I have to pay out of pocket to have it fixed or go back to the guy who did the bad job and have him “fix” it even though he’s had my car for 6 months for a repair that should have been one week and he is not capable of doing this job correctly!
Prior to that, merged into a lane at the same time as someone else and did not advocate for me and said “they had no skin in the game to fight for me” so I had to pay out of pocket for those repairs too. Now I have to pay over $500 for a new windshield because they won’t have my back. I’m DONE. I cancelled all policies and moved to a different company. What is the point of having insurance that won’t cover a job that is so badly done that it will RAIN INSIDE YOUR CAR???
