Bottom Line
Hagerty provides specialized and customizable insurance for classic and collectible vehicles. Its coverage isn’t available for daily-use cars, but Hagerty has a wide range of premiums at rates lower than standard insurance averages.
What is Hagerty?
Hagerty is a classic and collectible vehicle insurer. Its premiums are lower than most standard auto insurance because most collector’s cars are rarely out on the road. Hagerty offers guaranteed replacement value, low annual premiums and flexible usage. Its specialized coverage includes instant new purchase, spare parts, motorcycle safety equipment and auto show medical reimbursement insurance.
Hagerty covers collectible and classic cars from 1979 and older, collector trucks and SUVs from 1996 and older, limited-edition vehicles, supercars and exotics from 1980 and after, rods and replicas, motorsports, military vehicles, retired commercial vehicles 25+ years old and classic tractors and motorcycles. Hagerty Drivers Club provides 24/7 full-service roadside assistance for collector's cars.
Hagerty also offers protection for automobilia like posters, signs, hood ornaments and license plates, as well as track day insurance with time trial, towing, storage and pollutant removal options.
How does Hagerty insurance work?
Hagerty’s agents and industry tools determine the value of your collectible car and create an agreed-value policy to guarantee you get the full value without depreciation in case of a total loss. It customizes coverage based on travel, restoration, automobilia and valuable parts and tools. You must meet specific storage requirements in order to qualify. Hagerty allows flexible usage with no fixed mileage limits.
Hagerty’s new purchase insurance provides 30 days of coverage for up to $50,000 of the value of new collectible cars. Its auto show medical coverage applies up to $10,000 if you or a family member is injured during an auto show or related function. The company covers spare parts up to $750, and if your car needs repairs or restoration, you can choose the facility — or Hagerty will pay for you to perform repairs yourself.
Hagerty auto insurance quotes and rates
Hagerty doesn’t disclose specific pricing information on its website, but it claims its insurance premiums are, on average, 36% lower than daily-driver auto insurance, with an average savings of $264. Contact a customer service representative for a customized quote.

Impossible to settle claims. I have been on hold for 1 hour and 10 minutes as I write this. This follows other calls of 1 hour 15 minutes and 45 minutes which I hung up after being on hold. They don't answer the phone. They don't return voice mails. They don't return emails. They will do anything they can not to process your claim. I am moving my collector cars over to Grundy. I was on hold for so long I was able to get a quote and fill out application online while I waited for Hagerty to pick up phone. LOL.
Filed a very complex claim in December and have been required to provide additional information. All provided and when chasing claim this month, claim denied without any notification. Spoke to representative who repeated reason for denial of claim which were not items claimed for. Left email for supervisor, still no reply 5 days later.

I have 3 Corvettes insured with Hagerty or thought Hagerty, Essentia. I had just bought my vehicle and was on a drive and turn in a City Street laced with potholes. As careful as I was, the front mono spring broke. They sent an appraiser out to the house, she couldn't take photos of the damage, but I handed her the shop estimate of $2500 and she wrote estimate for$ 681. She is replacing with a used part. Off Ebay. The insurance company stated they don't guarantee those but are advocating this part because new is not available.
Now they have a conversion kit to restore the suspension and it's considered betterment. It's been 3.5 weeks at the shop sitting in back lot with no resolve. I just got an email after requesting a phone call that stated give them another week. The answering service would not transfer me to any voice mail or make contact. My next resolution is an attorney. I was told there would be no hassle repairs in a guaranteed valued. WTHeck??? I am being treated very poorly.
On April 25, 2024 I had someone run into the back of me my car was not drivable. I just bought a 1999 Toyota Camry perfect condition. I called Hagerty. I only had my car a month. I used Hagerty because they say they specialize in historic cars. When I called them they looked up my so called non existent policy and said that they tried to call me. My online submission was not accepted. They do not insure Camrys. Although that is one of the vehicles on their list. The guy just kept saying the same thing over and over again.
I had the police officer standing right beside me shaking his head due to their lack of communication skills etc. The rep from Hagerty said they tried to call me a couple times. How did I get tags, how did I go to the title company and they confirmed my insurance. Now what do I do I have no insurance per Hagerty who took the first payment out of my account. Do not use this insurance company for any reason. I have read so many bad reviews about them in the 2 days. I should have checked into them before using them to insure my car.
We are a 4 person family in a house (1 with no driving license) and I have a classic car and 3 other normal cars. They said because we are 4 people in the house, everyone must have 1 car each for them to be able to insure my classic???? So they want me to buy a car to someone with no driver's license just so Hagerty can insure me? LOL. Also keep in mind, if you are unfortunate enough to have an insurance with them, keep in mind you CANNOT sell your car or they will void your insurance. HUH?? Not to mention they treated me like a criminal on the phone saying they checked satellite look of my address and they couldn't see a garage?? AVOID AT ALL COSTS
I never thought I would here after a year nightmare. I have two classics with Hagerty. (Well they are using Essentia Insurance) I have never made a claim. I had heard they were a great company. Well that is no more. It is not even owned but Hagerty anymore. Very long story short I purchased a 1981 Porsche 928, good condition, motor and transmission ran strong. Had the car taken down to body and all dings removed and a great paint job and the coated. That shop did excellent work.
After I searched for a shop who could do classic Porsches I "thought" I had found one. Their site looked good and at that time had great reviews. Talked to the owner and he said, "they live and breathe" these cars and could do anything. The paint shop so loved the car they took it personally so there would be no damage in transport. I was just going have the whole car checked and do the regular things like change the timing belt, water pump, have new bulbs put in the dash for brightness, check all hoses and things. The car had no leaks I could see. Then the nightmare began. He missed the first dead-line. It was to be a Christmas present, and then the next many. Always stories and lies. Stole quite a bit of money from us. Always just another day or waiting on a part. Then stopped all contact.
Then after going the route of BBB, Attorney General and then attorney and lawsuit I was able to get my car back. They had did no repairs, criminally fraud shop. But had stripped parts off and ruined the inside. Took a window out and left outside for a year while I could not get the car. It went through rain, snow and ice storms, window out. Interior and sure the electronics destroyed. Dash ripped out and gear shifter ripped out, parts all thrown in car. Clear sign of theft or larceny, Malicious mischief and vandalism, of course major water damage. Also I have no idea if they did anything to the motor or transmission. (I am over-seas now on duty so Lawyer handled all.)
Finally went to court and him Hewitt of German Motor Works, Jonesboro, Ar lost on default. He did not even show up. Yes the car had been removed on court order to the Sheriff's department. Finally I thought at least I could file a claim and get this finished. He will not pay what is ordered; there are more cases. Clear fraud and theft by deception. I called Hagerty and the young man was very nice and took down everything. I was told an adjustor would be in contact. She was in time, and late, as all contact and information has been. These cars are hard to work on and it is difficult to even find shops.
After over a couple of weeks of asking very politely about my case I finally got a message to her supervisor also listed on my claim. Most every call is sent to voicemail. I ask they wrap this already late claim up. To me with cost of parts and all that must be done the car is a write off. It was a great car. Pictures tell the tale. Well after pushing to get this solved I got an email today saying they would pay a little over $800 to have the inside cleaned and some tape taken off. The car is stripped inside and simply and sadly ruined.
"Hagerty" can see the damage and just don't care. Could not believe this no service. They even change their original status of claim from partial thief to other. They said they do not cover restoration. This is not a restoration shop and I did not send it there for that. This is fraud shop to steal money and rips parts off cars. I thought this was a good company but it is the worst I have ever had. This newly painted classic is destroyed inside and who knows what else. I did not even get the pictures from the appraiser. I got some from where it is stored.
I will contact Hagerty again at a different number and see if they too are just fraud but anyone who has classic cars knows this is unbelievable. Hagerty truly has shown me they do not care and are just like this thieve and his shop.... This whole case needs to be taken seriously by professions. The people I have had to deal with are not and know nothing of classic cars. I will follow up with more. But DO NOT insure with Hagerty. They are not what they use to be. I hope and will see if they truly are an honest company. Never believed they would be this bad. I will call a number they say may help. More to come. Hope you do not find yourself in this position. I thought this would be a easy process to end this nightmare; well it is just another.
On 12/11/22, I rear ended my JDM and after reading all bad reviews of the Hagerty claim process, I thought that I would never have the Delica repaired, or get the guaranteed value. The appraiser called ACE lowballed what it would cost to replace the tailgate, bumper and repair body damage. I took the Delica to body shops and all were unwilling to write an estimate with an excuse that the van is not in their database since it’s for the Japanese market.
Well, one mechanic was willing to inspect it and showed me frame damage that would cost more than the guaranteed value. I took some pictures and reached out to Hagerty to request the claim to be kept open. Finally, one of the claims managers reviewed my claim and appeared to agree that the third party ACE estimate was very low based on the extent of the damage. Glad to report that Hagerty finally paid the full guaranteed value less the deductible. Process had some bumps but the end result is a positive one.
Overall, the initial adjuster’s communication and ACE (American Computing Estimates - 3rd party appraiser) could have been better but I am happy a claims Dept manager intervened. Sorry for those that have had not so good experience with the claim process. My advice is that be persistent and ask for someone else if you feel that the person handling your claim is dragging his/her feet
They did settle the claim.
On August 4 of 2022 my 84 Chevy truck was stolen. 22 days later it was found completely totaled it been stripped and been in a fire. To this day more than two months later Hagerty has not settled this claim in fact they haven't even pick the truck up or have looked at it. They keep giving me the runaround telling me they have picked it up then telling they haven't. They even ask me to go and take pictures of the truck and send them so they can make a determination if it a total loss. I will never use this company again!! I advise other not to either...

Wasted a lot of time with Hagerty getting a quote and submitting personal info for coverage on my classic Land Rover. They denied me coverage because they think the vehicle is too off roady. It is actually a show vehicle that does not see any road that is not maintained by the DOT. What a waste of time and effort. Not to mention they take days to let you know that they do not want your business.
Our mission is to save driving and we are constantly reviewing our underwriting guidelines to achieve that mission. We have passed along your comment about off road vehicles to our underwriting team.
To best summarize it, I will post unresponsed emails to Hagerty. Hagerty has preferred or approved body shops. Unfortunately they either don't do the old stuff or only do restorations which will be from 40 to 50k that Hagerty won't pay for. So to take to one's own shop and it took 3 months of my own time searching I have a lowball appraisal from Hagerty adjuster that is 10k less than the body shop just starting amount. My numbers matching 1971 GTO I had to forego parts needed just to cover the paint and body and will still owe 7 grand I'm counting on Hagerty will honor.
Three months, countless calls to Hagerty shops in 150 mile radius, calls and emails not returned, I even started work on the car to try and make a shop find it less labor intensive. I was at a point of seriously considering MAACO. My car will never be the same having to use donor parts, not apply the vinyl top, the bumper on the back and more. I really feel Hagerty will make this situation whole. It's in their best interest financially. Less of a payout than the other shops. 2 weeks every day I contact, no reply. Email no reply. The part that is the worst is I was seriously in a situation this car would never be repaired! A true 1971 GTO numbers matching inside kept survivor!
