I have never been more dissatisfied with a service. I have been a member since 2011 and they used to be great. However for the last few claims I have had to call and follow-up as my claims have not been processed in the 5-7 business days they state on the claims portal. My last claim is by far an insult. I uploaded my claim with all the necessary documents to the claims portal on 8/28/23. I called on 9/11/23 and they said I had to wait 10 business days. So I did and nothing. On 9/13/23 I called again and they said they were going to escalate it (I spoke to a supervisor) and to give it 2 more days.

Again today 9/15/23 I called as nothing changes on my status and was told again to wait 2 more business days that they were going to escalate it. I requested to speak to the supervisor's supervisor and was transferred to a lady by the name of Karin. She said there was no one above her and sorry but she couldn't do anything else. I assume at this point my claim may just sit there forever as no one can do anything but keep adding business days to wait with no results. I strongly recommend staying away from this company as their customer service, productivity and delivery of the product they advertise have clearly gone down the drain. Go with Aflac instead.

Colonial Life denied my claim even though I had full treatment because I’m not in active cancer status. Very upset because that was the only reason I had this policy because I knew I had multiple breast cancer genes. I will be reviewing in several places and canceling all policies. This company is a scam.

I got this insurance for a house I own and then canceled it within a couple of month to consolidate my policies with another company. It was canceled June 1. When I didn't have a refund within several weeks, I contacted my insurance broker, who called them and was told we needed to fill out a certain form. They had not told us this before. We fill out the form and now are told they only write checks once a month on the first, so they would mail it out August 1st. August 14th and I still don't have it. If they won't send me money that is MINE, they certainly won't pay on a claim for you.

I stayed with Colonial Life Short Term Disability Insurance when my work dropped STD insurance. I was with them for years. I was late one time making a payment, but still made the late payment within their late time frame. I spoke with a representative on the phone and she told me my policy would still be active if I made the payment with her that day. I made my late payment and paid for three more months. Then I received a letter saying they dropped me. Every time I would call, the representative would tell me there is nothing they can do. I asked to speak with a manager, and would never receive a call back. I still have not been reimbursed for the 3 months I paid, for their policy that they later considered inactive. This company is criminal, a waste of time and money. Legal action is now necessary.

Colonial Life is an absolute scam. I have cancelled a year ago and just found out now I'm still being charged for this whole year. When I call in, they give me a runaround and they do not give me any answers, saying I never cancelled. I am being asked to speak to people who then tell me to speak to somebody else. It is just an absolute scam the way that they do not allow you to cancel the policy and will continue to charge you regardless. I have asked to take my account off the payment so they can't charge me, but they have not done that either. So, I'm still being charged. I cannot get the account cancelled. And I should have cancelled it a year ago, but they never cancelled it and I have been charged this whole time with no refund.

2 years ago I was approached by an insurance agent selling Colonial Life benefits and life insurance. As an employer and small business, I elected to get one of my employee's dental insurance and then chose to get life insurance plans for myself. Fast forward to last month, said employee quits. I reach out to Colonial Life and request they be removed from my billing. Turns out, the agent screwed up setting up the account and did not put it as a Group business, but listed the employee's private bank information as MY business bank account. I am then told that said employee has to reach out to them to remove MY business account and provide their own. They cannot simply remove my business account because THEY screwed up setting up our policies.

What was their solution? To call my bank and tell them to block the monthly automatic withdrawal payments. The kicker? That includes MY life insurance policies that I have been paying into for 2 years. Colonial Life's official stance is to forfeit the life insurance policies I have paid into to remove the measly dental plan I was paying for one of my employees. When I explained that this is unacceptable, they said it was out of their hands, even though THEY screwed this up from the beginning. Now I have to pay for THEIR mistakes. I was covering health insurance for that same employee with another company. I emailed them and in 5 minutes they removed them from my billing. Why is that so hard for you to do Colonial Life? Stay far, far away from this company.

Having said that, their short-term disability only covers new issues, mental health and no pre-existing problems (even cancer in remission) is covered. Kind of seems discriminatory to me. I have had Colonial for a long time even their cancer, and life policy I am just fully covered, this review is for this year, usually they are great and they do payout on all my claims. But this year they are taking forever to payout. Before within 2 week I would have my direct deposit, but my most recent claim, so far 3 weeks ago, I have still not received payment and when you call or do online chat they just give you a script reading "thank you for your patience", I am so tired of hearing that, my last claim they kept telling me, "Please allow 5 to 7 (which means 10 business days) for your claim to be processed," and the girl kept saying that they were within the time, I literally had to count with her on the calendar to show her it had been over 10 business days??

But the new claim is now officially 3 weeks in process???? They need to get back to the company they used to be or just be more honest, I would appreciate it more if they said, "After covid we are short of staff and are doing the best we can," because that would be honest but to give you the same crappy script over and over is frustrating. Maybe they do not realize that we need the money? So my review is for this year's service, but I have been with them for a long time and this year was actually the worst for them.

Beware on this Company. I have been paying for Accident and Sickness insurance since 2003 and thought since I work in Law Enforcement it would be a good idea to have it. I haven't had the opportunity to use it much (which is a good thing) but I believed it to be good to have just in case. Fortunately, I didn't get hurt at work, just sick from the Covid-19. I was tested at work with the rapid and PC test and had tested positive and had multiple symptoms. Work made me stay home so I applied for my Colonial Life benefits. I had to be symptom free and test negative to return to work. I kept testing positive and had symptoms...

My Human Resources informed Colonial Life that I was out of work from 1/3/22 to 1/26/22.. 23 days. Colonial life only wanted to pay for 7 days even though
my Human Resources confirmed the dates I was out. The District Manager, Gordon **, tried helping. Gordon informed me I had to get a Doctor to sign off

on it, or a Nurse Practitioner. Impossible to see a Doctor or Nurse practitioner when you're sick with Covid-19 unless you're dying, which I wasn't. Colonial Life refused to pay for the entire time I was out, even though my policy is covered for short term (6 months).

After a few tries with the help of Gordon **, the Appeals Department of course denied the claim because like all insurance companies, they find a reason not to pay. It's not a huge amount of money, it's the principle of not being able to use a policy you have been paying on for almost 20 years. AGAIN, BEWARE OF THIS COMPANY.

Unfortunately, I have had to use my accident, STD and cancer (twice) plans over the years. I have been very pleased with the claims process and the timeliness of payment every time. Also, when you call customer service, you do not have to hold for 90 mins like is typical with my AFLAC policy. They do require a lot of paperwork for STD claims, but no more than AFLAC or other STD carriers. Also, a lot of times it is the doctor's offices that delay STD claim payments by not responding in a timely fashion.

After having sustained a major injury at the beginning of June, completely severing my hamstring from my pelvis requiring screw reattachment, I have changed my mind. Though I have received partial payment, I'm still waiting on six weeks of payment, pending when they receive information. Problem being, that they've "not received" at least 5 faxes from both my employer and physician.

Took me 2 weeks of calling back every 3 days and a live chat to finally get an email. Upon informing my employer to resend, was told another individual in my company was also having issues with their information being received. After inquiring several times, I still have no answer to why faxes are not being received or reviewed. I will be canceling my policy as soon as my claim is paid. What a shock when I called Colonial Penn in September 2020 to examine their $9.95 guaranteed acceptance life insurance. What I didn't know is the call "for FREE information" is treated as an "electronic application" and my 30-day "no-risk" money-back guarantee is an illusion. To be brief: I reviewed the $9.95 policy and another policy and returned all materials within 24 hours asking for my refunds. They did not respond. I disputed the charges immediately and, after making multiple calls I filed a complaint to the Ohio Dept. of Insurance after which all monies were returned to my credit card. I was relieved. My nightmare was over--or, so I thought.

Fast forward to February, 2021 and Colonial Penn charged my card without authorization. It's fraud. I reopened the ODI case. I filed another dispute with my credit card company. April, 2021 they refunded the charge. The problem? They refunded the charge four (4) times creating a credit. I alerted the credit card company to return the money. Not easy, they said, because Colonial Penn paid the money--not the credit card company. Because I feared they could arbitrarily access my account to recoup the overpayment without my knowledge cases are reopened at the ODI and at the credit card company. Two separate investigations are ongoing as I write this.

After discovering multiple complaints at this site and others I wish I'd never made the first call. This company's "guaranteed acceptance" translates to them taking money for 24 months under their "limited benefits the first two years" with no benefit whatsoever if the insured dies before the 24th month! If it's later they do not pay the face value--only you won't know that until you try to file a claim--and long after you've paid premiums regularly. Read other posts on this site. You pay premiums for 24 months and you are not covered! Your beneficiary will receive what is called a "Graded Death Benefit." Look it up and run. Do not walk the other way. Look elsewhere on the Internet. You will find the company does one of two things. Some consumers are treated well. Others are treated abominably. Avoid any "guaranteed acceptance" garbage. If it sounds too good to be true...

I learned I needed a total left hip replacement back in February. Before I even started I talked to TWO different ladies at this company, two different occasions, two different days to see if I was eligible and was told the exact same thing both times. Which of course there is no proof of even with their quality control taping for assurance line of bull. "Sure, Mary, ya can draw before surgery and $900 a month for up to six months afterward. NO PROBLEM." Well, no problem turned into a NO before surgery because I had a right hip operation 6 years before. Even though their own rules state, you can't have a preexisting condition for a year before the policy--they kept giving me the run around. They requested paperwork after paperwork.

I more than proved it wasn't preexisting in that hip within their time frame. Contact us after the surgery. I even got a Dr's excuse to be off work. Surgery was postpone because of Covid-19 'til May 5. April 27th, they operated. I have been since then trying to get compensated. I have sent medical records, x rays, pay stubs, work releases--TWICE. They are STILL pushing pre-existing condition. When I threatened to go to Aflac with the next payment and a lawyer, I gave them a time limit to give me a definite answer. Five days later, they told me they were calling my Primary and the surgeon for my medical records that I already uploaded TWICE--guess they thought I made them up-- and I was to file out the Universal Claim form and they would give me an answer in several weeks; just enough time to scam another payment out of me for nothing!

I would be healed and back to work before this even got going! That's what they want so they don't need to pay. In this Universal Claim Form for MAYBE 2 months temporary disability I was expected to provide the hospital bill, medical bills, anesthesia bill, daily room charges, medical expense, names and phone numbers of every person I've been in contact with concerning this left hip clear back to 2018. They aren't PAYING this--it's paid thru somebody else. They wanted my job information, hours worked, what I did at that job, how long and my job does not PAY for this policy. I do. They wanted repeated signatures from my Dr's and leave of work or when anticipated return to work notes were not good enough.

They asked questions like was I under anesthesia and was it by a licensed person. (No, they gave me a short of whiskey & told me to hold my breath.) Wanted to know how freaking long I sat in the recovery room, (Seriously) how many visits I talked with my Dr after the operation, and was the patient kept in confinement at the house or in the yard. (Yeah, my husband tied me to the dog box when I came home!)

To talk to a person is short lived with bull answers and when you email them it's impossible to read your emails after they are sent. You also can't print them off to have proof of the whole conversation. There's is no place on the web page to cancel your policies so I guess the only way now is stop this bull crap--is stop payment on the money coming out of my checking account because I refuse to give them another dime especially when my daughter was off for two weeks with a sinus infection and ONE phone call to their competitor company --she had a check within the week for a sinus infection! I had total hip replacement and it's song & dance bull circus. DO NOT, I repeat DO NOT invest your safety net into this company!

I posted the other day saying Colonial would not pay on my cancer policy. Well, after a lot of back and forth and many emails to the company I rec'd an email today saying my claim would be paid. I credit my Rep with getting this done but the process took a long time. Still, had I not fought it I would not have been paid. There's no reason I had to jump through hoops but am glad they paid.

I have been a client for many years. Have received payments on cancer claims in the past without too much trouble. I was told by my doctor I had Stage 0 cancer, went in for lumpectomy and came back Stage 1 so I needed a mastectomy. They will not pay my claim for the mastectomy because they say I didn't have cancer. Well, technically the lumpectomy removed it but I had no choice but to get the mastectomy because I had radiation before and it could not be done again. My pre & post diagnosis after mastectomy was breast cancer....and they won't pay. Well, I'm canceling and will sing it from the roof tops, don't trust them!!!!

I paid this company for over twenty five years for life insurance. All they did was increase my premiums until the value was not worth continuing. Big ripoff. They calculate and increase your premiums until continuing with policy is senseless.
