Colonial Life denied my claim even though I had full treatment because I’m not in active cancer status. Very upset because that was the only reason I had this policy because I knew I had multiple breast cancer genes. I will be reviewing in several places and canceling all policies. This company is a scam.

I got this insurance for a house I own and then canceled it within a couple of month to consolidate my policies with another company. It was canceled June 1. When I didn't have a refund within several weeks, I contacted my insurance broker, who called them and was told we needed to fill out a certain form. They had not told us this before. We fill out the form and now are told they only write checks once a month on the first, so they would mail it out August 1st. August 14th and I still don't have it. If they won't send me money that is MINE, they certainly won't pay on a claim for you.

I stayed with Colonial Life Short Term Disability Insurance when my work dropped STD insurance. I was with them for years. I was late one time making a payment, but still made the late payment within their late time frame. I spoke with a representative on the phone and she told me my policy would still be active if I made the payment with her that day. I made my late payment and paid for three more months. Then I received a letter saying they dropped me. Every time I would call, the representative would tell me there is nothing they can do. I asked to speak with a manager, and would never receive a call back. I still have not been reimbursed for the 3 months I paid, for their policy that they later considered inactive. This company is criminal, a waste of time and money. Legal action is now necessary.

2 years ago I was approached by an insurance agent selling Colonial Life benefits and life insurance. As an employer and small business, I elected to get one of my employee's dental insurance and then chose to get life insurance plans for myself. Fast forward to last month, said employee quits. I reach out to Colonial Life and request they be removed from my billing. Turns out, the agent screwed up setting up the account and did not put it as a Group business, but listed the employee's private bank information as MY business bank account. I am then told that said employee has to reach out to them to remove MY business account and provide their own. They cannot simply remove my business account because THEY screwed up setting up our policies.
What was their solution? To call my bank and tell them to block the monthly automatic withdrawal payments. The kicker? That includes MY life insurance policies that I have been paying into for 2 years. Colonial Life's official stance is to forfeit the life insurance policies I have paid into to remove the measly dental plan I was paying for one of my employees. When I explained that this is unacceptable, they said it was out of their hands, even though THEY screwed this up from the beginning. Now I have to pay for THEIR mistakes. I was covering health insurance for that same employee with another company. I emailed them and in 5 minutes they removed them from my billing. Why is that so hard for you to do Colonial Life? Stay far, far away from this company.

I had this life insurance when I was employed 1993. I retired 2012 and decided to keep the insurance. There is always an increase every year. Recently, I was told in order to keep my insurance my premium would triple monthly. If I don't pay the new amount, all the money I paid basically is zero.

This company is the worst. I tried so hard to get a short-term disability policy through them at work but they make it so hard, no one was able to get one. Having said that, their short-term disability only covers new issues, mental health and no pre-existing problems (even cancer in remission) is covered. Kind of seems discriminatory to me. I was finally forced to get a policy with a company separate from work…at least this company cares about its consumers.

I have had Colonial for a long time even their cancer, and life policy I am just fully covered, this review is for this year, usually they are great and they do payout on all my claims. But this year they are taking forever to payout. Before within 2 week I would have my direct deposit, but my most recent claim, so far 3 weeks ago, I have still not received payment and when you call or do online chat they just give you a script reading "thank you for your patience", I am so tired of hearing that, my last claim they kept telling me, "Please allow 5 to 7 (which means 10 business days) for your claim to be processed," and the girl kept saying that they were within the time, I literally had to count with her on the calendar to show her it had been over 10 business days??
But the new claim is now officially 3 weeks in process???? They need to get back to the company they used to be or just be more honest, I would appreciate it more if they said, "After covid we are short of staff and are doing the best we can," because that would be honest but to give you the same crappy script over and over is frustrating. Maybe they do not realize that we need the money? So my review is for this year's service, but I have been with them for a long time and this year was actually the worst for them.

Beware on this Company. I have been paying for Accident and Sickness insurance since 2003 and thought since I work in Law Enforcement it would be a good idea to have it. I haven't had the opportunity to use it much (which is a good thing) but I believed it to be good to have just in case. Fortunately, I didn't get hurt at work, just sick from the Covid-19. I was tested at work with the rapid and PC test and had tested positive and had multiple symptoms. Work made me stay home so I applied for my Colonial Life benefits. I had to be symptom free and test negative to return to work. I kept testing positive and had symptoms...
my Human Resources confirmed the dates I was out. The District Manager, Gordon **, tried helping. Gordon informed me I had to get a Doctor to sign off
on it, or a Nurse Practitioner. Impossible to see a Doctor or Nurse practitioner when you're sick with Covid-19 unless you're dying, which I wasn't. Colonial Life refused to pay for the entire time I was out, even though my policy is covered for short term (6 months).
After a few tries with the help of Gordon **, the Appeals Department of course denied the claim because like all insurance companies, they find a reason not to pay. It's not a huge amount of money, it's the principle of not being able to use a policy you have been paying on for almost 20 years. AGAIN, BEWARE OF THIS COMPANY.

Please keep in mind that this company is NOT Colonial Penn, as other reviewers have stated. I purchased Accident, Cancer, STD and Life plans in 2006 through my employer. Unfortunately, I have had to use my accident, STD and cancer (twice) plans over the years. I have been very pleased with the claims process and the timeliness of payment every time. Also, when you call customer service, you do not have to hold for 90 mins like is typical with my AFLAC policy. They do require a lot of paperwork for STD claims, but no more than AFLAC or other STD carriers. Also, a lot of times it is the doctor's offices that delay STD claim payments by not responding in a timely fashion.

I started a policy with Colonial Life at the end of last year. I pay them every week, relieved to have some sort of safety net for my five kids. That all changed this last month. After having sustained a major injury at the beginning of June, completely severing my hamstring from my pelvis requiring screw reattachment, I have changed my mind. Though I have received partial payment, I'm still waiting on six weeks of payment, pending when they receive information. Problem being, that they've "not received" at least 5 faxes from both my employer and physician.
Took me 2 weeks of calling back every 3 days and a live chat to finally get an email. Upon informing my employer to resend, was told another individual in my company was also having issues with their information being received. After inquiring several times, I still have no answer to why faxes are not being received or reviewed. I will be canceling my policy as soon as my claim is paid. Better off stashing that 100 bucks a month in savings for your own safety, than letting others play with your money.

Absolutely the WORST experience you will ever receive if you utilize Colonial Accident supplemental insurance. Customer Service & transparency with this company is a joke. After being a 30 yr customer unfortunately the situation arose where I sustained serious injury & had to rely on payment from my supplemental plan. Each month I had to contact Customer Support and have a shouting match to track down my payment. The original anticipated date for my return to work was met but extended due to complications pending additional surgery. The information was immediately faxed to Colonial (twice) since they conveniently lost the original after leaving the Surgeon’s Office. Now here I am with no explanation of why there is a lapse in my payments other than it takes 8 business days to process a claim for the exact same injury I am still recovering from.

What a shock when I called Colonial Penn in September 2020 to examine their $9.95 guaranteed acceptance life insurance. What I didn't know is the call "for FREE information" is treated as an "electronic application" and my 30-day "no-risk" money-back guarantee is an illusion. To be brief: I reviewed the $9.95 policy and another policy and returned all materials within 24 hours asking for my refunds. They did not respond. I disputed the charges immediately and, after making multiple calls I filed a complaint to the Ohio Dept. of Insurance after which all monies were returned to my credit card. I was relieved. My nightmare was over--or, so I thought.
Fast forward to February, 2021 and Colonial Penn charged my card without authorization. It's fraud. I reopened the ODI case. I filed another dispute with my credit card company. April, 2021 they refunded the charge. The problem? They refunded the charge four (4) times creating a credit. I alerted the credit card company to return the money. Not easy, they said, because Colonial Penn paid the money--not the credit card company. Because I feared they could arbitrarily access my account to recoup the overpayment without my knowledge cases are reopened at the ODI and at the credit card company. Two separate investigations are ongoing as I write this.
After discovering multiple complaints at this site and others I wish I'd never made the first call. This company's "guaranteed acceptance" translates to them taking money for 24 months under their "limited benefits the first two years" with no benefit whatsoever if the insured dies before the 24th month! If it's later they do not pay the face value--only you won't know that until you try to file a claim--and long after you've paid premiums regularly. Read other posts on this site. You pay premiums for 24 months and you are not covered! Your beneficiary will receive what is called a "Graded Death Benefit." Look it up and run. Do not walk the other way. Look elsewhere on the Internet. You will find the company does one of two things. Some consumers are treated well. Others are treated abominably. Avoid any "guaranteed acceptance" garbage. If it sounds too good to be true...

I see so many negative reviews that I wanted to share my personal experience. Unlike others, I had a great experience. I turned in my claim a week before I had surgery. I gave all the info they requested on the form. They provided me daily updates via phone/email/text. They paid my claim 6 days after my surgery and paid the short term disability for a month out. It could not have been easier. I think most people get frustrated because they don't read/understand the fine print about pre-existing conditions, fill out the paperwork entirely, and wait until the last minute to submit their claim. I spoke with a representative about trying to get pregnant and he informed me that I would receive coverage as long as I wasn't knowingly pregnant before my coverage began in January 2020. I had my first confirmed ultrasound and dr appointment on January 24th, 2020. ALSO he told me that I would receive $1,500 for hospital confinement if it was over 24 hours.
So, I was shocked when I submitted a claim in August for both of these, expecting to receive gap coverage during my disability leave and all of them were DENIED. I was one month too early to receive coverage, and since the hospital confinement was pregnancy related they would not pay for that policy coverage either. So, I had been paying hundreds of dollars for absolutely no reason. This is just another way that insurance companies take your money and don't care about the consumer. If I could give them (0) stars, I would. I signed up for multiple coverages, accidental, disability, cancer etc. just to have a small safety net in case something happened to me or my daughter. Well in Dec of 2019, I was walking and somehow ended up tearing my right MCL, visited the orthopedic doctor day of injury, have been under his care, MRI showed the tear, did the orthopedic operation, and am still under his care and doing physical therapy. When I tried to make a claim under my accidental injury insurance, Colonial denied claim for out of pocket expenses, roughly $5K to $8K. Colonial said that the injury was not an accident, nor a sickness since I showed some arthritis. They refused to pay anything. I appealed and they still denied benefits. Company such doesn't have an issue taking premiums but finds any reason possible to deny claims. Will inform my company and friends of their practices.

I was a customer with this company for almost a year, so I only lost $1000. Glad I found out now instead of years down the road. I got their temporary disability plan as a safety net for myself. I learned I needed a total left hip replacement back in February. Before I even started I talked to TWO different ladies at this company, two different occasions, two different days to see if I was eligible and was told the exact same thing both times. Which of course there is no proof of even with their quality control taping for assurance line of bull. "Sure, Mary, ya can draw before surgery and $900 a month for up to six months afterward. NO PROBLEM." Well, no problem turned into a NO before surgery because I had a right hip operation 6 years before. Even though their own rules state, you can't have a preexisting condition for a year before the policy--they kept giving me the run around. They requested paperwork after paperwork.
I more than proved it wasn't preexisting in that hip within their time frame. Contact us after the surgery. I even got a Dr's excuse to be off work. Surgery was postpone because of Covid-19 'til May 5. April 27th, they operated. I have been since then trying to get compensated. I have sent medical records, x rays, pay stubs, work releases--TWICE. They are STILL pushing pre-existing condition. When I threatened to go to Aflac with the next payment and a lawyer, I gave them a time limit to give me a definite answer. Five days later, they told me they were calling my Primary and the surgeon for my medical records that I already uploaded TWICE--guess they thought I made them up-- and I was to file out the Universal Claim form and they would give me an answer in several weeks; just enough time to scam another payment out of me for nothing!
I would be healed and back to work before this even got going! That's what they want so they don't need to pay. In this Universal Claim Form for MAYBE 2 months temporary disability I was expected to provide the hospital bill, medical bills, anesthesia bill, daily room charges, medical expense, names and phone numbers of every person I've been in contact with concerning this left hip clear back to 2018. They aren't PAYING this--it's paid thru somebody else. They wanted my job information, hours worked, what I did at that job, how long and my job does not PAY for this policy. I do. They wanted repeated signatures from my Dr's and leave of work or when anticipated return to work notes were not good enough.
They asked questions like was I under anesthesia and was it by a licensed person. (No, they gave me a short of whiskey & told me to hold my breath.) Wanted to know how freaking long I sat in the recovery room, (Seriously) how many visits I talked with my Dr after the operation, and was the patient kept in confinement at the house or in the yard. (Yeah, my husband tied me to the dog box when I came home!)
To talk to a person is short lived with bull answers and when you email them it's impossible to read your emails after they are sent. You also can't print them off to have proof of the whole conversation. There's is no place on the web page to cancel your policies so I guess the only way now is stop this bull crap--is stop payment on the money coming out of my checking account because I refuse to give them another dime especially when my daughter was off for two weeks with a sinus infection and ONE phone call to their competitor company --she had a check within the week for a sinus infection! I had total hip replacement and it's song & dance bull circus. DO NOT, I repeat DO NOT invest your safety net into this company!

I have been told by reps that I am due a payment of some $1200.00. However, 3 months later they have yet to send a payment. Every time I call to inquire they have some new excuse. They include "we had a building emergency had had to close for a day, We are under new management, Your check is going out tomorrow and we have no record that you ever went to the hospital." Meanwhile I am sitting on a hospital bill of some $9000.00. I spent another 2 and a half hours on the phone with them yesterday and I was told they are "reviewing" my claim.
I have been a customer for over 3 years. I have been paying them $230.00 per month in premiums, that's over $8000.00. I am still pursuing a claim but I have cancelled the policies with them for failure to produce. I called AFLAC to get pricing from them. Although I will not get the 25% discount for having a payroll deduction, the price is only $244.00 for the exact same policies. I work for the Pa Department of Correction and have notified our union (PSCOA) to begin the process of eliminating Colonial Life and reintroducing AFLAC. I recommend that all parties stay away from COLONIAL LIFE. This company has gotten so many calls to cancel policies that they made it option 5 on the automated receptionist. I have been with this company since 2010. I recently had an in home accident resulting in a severe open gaping wound. I drove myself to the hospital to avoid ambulance/paramedic costs. I did not stay overnight as that would have cost another $5000.00. They did take me to surgery with anesthesiologist and surgeon. I do not have medical insurance because of the high cost (mortgage payment vs health insurance). My total claim came to just under $12,000.00. Colonial paid a total of just under $400.00 TOTAL!
I know this was NOT a medical policy, I kept telling them that... but they could not seem to grasp that if you have surgery there is usually an anesthesiologist and a surgeon in a surgical suite involved. Their “boxes to be checked” only involved overnight stay or not... ridiculous. I paid bi-annual premiums to this company for 9 years, this was my first ever claim. DO NOT WASTE YOUR MONEY with this company!

Updated on 08/27/2019: I just called these crooks yesterday, according to them my claim was supposed to have been done at the end of business day yesterday (8/26/2019). I called today now they're saying it'll be done tomorrow (8/28/2019). I'm sick and tired of these incompetent crooks. If I don't hear anything back I will seek legal action.
Original review: Do not waste your time or money with these crooks. I needed emergency surgery done and according to both my surgeon and PCP, i would be off between 2 to 6 weeks. I filled out all the forms i needed to, my PCP filled out everything he needed to and my surgeon's office filled out everything they needed to and faxed the paperwork to both my employer and these crooks. I have been out of work for almost 4 weeks and after the 10 business day mark i was denied. When I called them I asked why I was denied and in their own words "your surgery is considered a pre-existing condition". I asked how can an emergency surgery be considered a "pre-existing condition"? And according to them (this is exactly what the guy said) "it just is". If I knew then when I signed up for them what I know now, I would've told them to shove it. And of course you can't take legal action against them, now I'm almost 4 weeks behind on everything. Do not sign up for them.

I lost my husband two years ago, when this came up at my place of employment I thought this would be smart so my children wouldn’t have the burden of death expenses as I did! Unfortunately I didn’t check reviews, or educate myself before signing up. Shortly after friends and family said I was paying way too much for a small policy, I cancelled on July 23 and they are still deducting from my account. When I contacted them the first time they explained it may take 7-10 business day.... well another 14 days later another deduction! 22 DAYS and still not cancelled! I then spoke with a manager who claims he will expedite it but they are experiencing a large amount of cancellations and this is the reason for the delay.... I asked him “Doesn’t this raise red flags that your company is experiencing a large volume of cancellations?” Maybe they need to put changes into effect!!!! Very disappointing experience.

Our company decided to switch from AFLAC to Colonial Life this year and we will not be renewing with them next. I submitted a claim 4/5/19. About a month later I called to check on it. It's still being processed, call back in a week or two. Two weeks later, I call and the lady I spoke to actually tells me that my claim has been escalated and there is no one she can transfer me to, no one I can call and she has no information.
I call back a few days later and the next person I speak to looks into it and tells me somehow my claim was deleted so once they realized this, they had to rebuild the claim??? Ok. Why is it taking so long? Fast forward to yesterday, 7/10/19, and it is still waiting for approval. I ask to speak to a supervisor, who calls me this morning and leaves a vm that states they need the Tax ID and MPI of my dentist or they can't continue to process. Are you kidding me right now?? 3 months have gone by and you're JUST NOW telling me this? Terrible Terrible.

Helpful tip to anyone who needs to file a claim: scan all of your claim documents in yourself and upload them directly to the website. Do NOT fax anything. Don't have your doctors fax anything. I have several fax receipts from my doctor's office showing that her statements had arrived, she sent them 4 times over a 3 week period. Colonial "never received them, but it can take up to 48 hours" okay, well what about the exact same fax that was sent 3 weeks ago? Does it take them 3 weeks to process faxes? Apparently. I should be resting, but somehow end up on the phone with claims representatives every single day. It's just too much. It seems like no one is on the same page. Everyone has a different answer (excuse) to explain why I haven't received my money yet.
It feels like I am being given misleading information, AND GIVEN THE RUN AROUND so that I'll become discouraged and just stop fighting for a service that I have been paying for for YEARS. I have been paying my premiums promptly since 2015 (paycheck deduction), but, now that I need to be paid, I have to jump through hoops and cross my fingers to get it...AND NOT ON TIME. I was late on almost all of my bills last month because of their carelessness and inability to review documentation, so these people are now messing with my CREDIT. One representative actually made me cry. It appears as though I will likely be late on this month's bills as well, as the physicians statement (that they requested, AGAIN) that was faxed over to them 4 times NEVER GOT THERE.
It wasn't until I drove out to my doctor's office to retrieve the paperwork and fax receipts MYSELF, and scanned it in myself that Colonial Life couldn't lie about receiving it, or losing it, or telling me it's "still being processed". A document, a SINGLE DOCUMENT, ONE PAGE, which has now taken 5 days to review even though I was cleared for an expedited process. This expedited review was granted after I presented fax receipts from over 3 weeks ago from my doctor. Seems to like it's going to take the full 10 days. Give me a break. And to top everything off... I logged into the Colonial Life website today to see if anything has changed and received a notification that my policy is going to lapse due to a lack of payment on my premium. ARE YOU KIDDING ME? I will be dropping Colonial Life as soon as I am able to get back to work (that's if they don't stop paying on my claim before I can get there) as it seems many people on here have reported.
I am extremely dissatisfied. I am left wondering if their actions are legal? "Lost" medical documents (that my doctors have receipts for) to buy themselves more time to NOT pay me? One representative insulting me and making me cry? I'm not going to go away until I receive the service that I have paid for for YEARS. If anything changes, I will be sure to post another review here. In the meantime, good luck to everyone who is struggling. I sincerely mean that. We should be resting and recovering, not jumping through hoops. This is absolutely asinine. I give ONE star, only because of a handful of representatives who have legitimately done their jobs and followed through. One representative reported the man who made me cry, was genuinely appalled and followed my claim until I got paid last month. She is THE ONLY REASON that Colonial Life gets ONE STAR.

I have had Colonial for 15 years through my employer. Recently I have had two outpatient hand surgeries. I filed the itemized bills to get paid for my Outpatient Surgery benefit, that was not enough, I was told I needed an operative report. I got those, called today and was told it will take WEEKS to review. They make you jump through hoops, it's ridiculous. I met with my Representative in person, he was so lazy and didn't offer to help in any way.
Next I will be filing my disability, that is sure to be a joke too. Since I took out my disability policy 15 years ago I only get paid on what I was making at that time, which is considerably less than I make now. Colonial NEVER told me that, and never sent notice that hey maybe I should update my policy. I feel bad for anyone who plans on relying on quick payment when things go wrong. I will be dropping Colonial like a hot potato and going to AFLAC. I'm filing a complaint with Florida Department of Financial Services on them and encourage anyone else who has issues to do so as well.

I’ve been put out of work through the summer while I undergo treatment and possibly surgery to fix the nerve damage in my foot, and because the doctor changed the date on my initial paperwork, Colonial wanted more proof of my continued treatment. What scares me is that they wait the full 8 business days and don’t communicate with you about the need for more paperwork. I’ve called and reached out to ensure they have all they need and am told “not at this time.” But come next week if they request more paperwork. It means all my bills are later than ever ... again. I wish I had known how difficult they can make things before I agreed to the policy, which is now in danger of being cancelled for nonpayment because I have had no income except their initial payment which didn’t even cover my rent.

They get one star because it was required that I give them at least one star. I have never in my life dealt with an “insurance company” like this one. We have this coverage because my husband’s employer offered it with a subpar health plan. (Around 10 years now). I have yet to file a claim without additional information needed. I have had several surgeries in the past and most recently had a skin graft to cover the removal of a skin cancer. The policy states in black and white that a skin graft is covered. (Also, prior to this, I of course had several biopsies to determine what this skin cancer was...the policy states that a biopsy is a diagnostic procedure. They told me they could not locate a diagnostic procedure I had, so I needed to provide more information).
In the claim I filed, I sent them my ENTIRE file straight from the Dr’s office, complete with pathology reports, because I know how they have been in the past. They told me I had not provided enough information. Every code they could possibly need was on these records. I cannot express exactly how much I LOATHE this company. Also, when I last called to get help with a claim, the lady that answered sounded like she was in her bathroom and couldn’t offer me any help other than to tell me I needed to download a claim form and send it in.
Also, did I mention that I file contracts for a living. I read everything. Trust me, I wouldn’t have wasted my time yet again on this claim if I wasn’t sure it was something that was covered by this stupid policy. DO NOT waste your time. I would give Colonial negative stars if it was an option. As a note, we also have Aflac policies. Well I used to managed 2 gyms in Washington State and while I was managing we had a rep from Colonial Life come in to sell me and attempt to sell all my current members policies. The gentleman was great at his job and I gave him the opportunity to sit with me which by the end thought that "This accident policy is a no brainer" and purchased it for very little money per month that came directly from my paychecks. I also allowed him to leave his brochure and card for our current members to look at if they so choose to. Fast forward 4 months later... I was in a severe ATV accident where I had lacerations to my face, shattered my nose, tore my trapezius muscle and partial shoulder. Not only did I have to go through all of the x-rays, MRI's, sewing my lip back together much more pain than one should go through but I also had to miss weeks of work for obvious reasons.
When I finally got released from the hospital and was on bed rest I remembered I had this policy which would be able to help me with my medical bills that was not covered under my actual insurance. I gave them a call and was told multiple times that my policy is still active and that I needed to update my billing address and information before we could submit a new claim. I was sent a digital sign link with the information they requested. After I signed and filled out and sent it back the Docusigns, I proceeded to follow everything they asked such as asking for every medical bill to photos of the accident. Was told multiple times throughout three week waiting period that it was procedure and I would get approved. Well I didn't. The reasoning behind the rejection was that "the billing information from before the incident was not updated" (which my account was still paid up to current).
Obviously I was frustrated and did speak to multiple sources of management that just reinforced that it was not updated. I eventually had enough and said I just want it cancelled right now and will figure out these problems on my own. Well let's fast forward 3 months later... I just received a letter in the mail stating I owe them $70 for the last three months. I've worked in a call center, sales, insurance, management and now own my own business and will say that this should never be the level of professionalism given by any company let alone a company that is supposed to be in your corner when in great life struggle. I also told Colonial that I wanted a copy of the statement that the appeals department submitted to determine my denial, along with the person who was responsible for the denial, their medical credentials, all other parties who had a part in the denial along with their medical credentials, what medical facility they used to review my appeal and all supporting documents. Updated on 12/04/2018: Update on my Mass Short Term Disability- Massachusetts: So as my previous posts- this all started in August. After my second appeal was denied I got Sothers involved and the Div of Insurance. We filed a complaint with the Div of Insurance and they sent it to Colonial Short Term disability. Div of Insurance with the help of others got this out to Colonial in 2 days. I got an email from Colonial saying they received the complaint from Div of Insurance and they had until 12/11/18 to respond. I wish I could say names of officials who are helping me but can't. They have been incredible. Today I go into account and there is an email dated 11/29/18 denying my claim again based on information received in Oct. They listed all the dates from my Dr. I call the 800 line and play dumb to claim rep who proceeds to read me what the letter sent to me said while I was looking at it but she did not know that.
She reads that I was denied based on documentation from my Dr 2 months ago and documentation for Div of Insurance received Nov 13 and 14. I then proceeded to ask her where the Div of Insurance dates were in the letter and she said "right in the middle" I then told her I was looking at the letter and I did not any Nov dates that docs were sent from Div of Insurance. She was silent and then said "if you read it says the denial was based on documentation received".
I said "so tell me how you read to me the letter which is leaving out important dates about how this claim was again denied and yet you do not list the dates other than from Oct? I appealed and the exact dates my Dr sent in information yet not a word about the dates you reviewed Div of Insurance complaints (I know she was reading it as the wording was pretty like what I received other than the Div of Insurance dates). I even have Colonial email saying they received the complaint." I then asked if a copy was sent to the Div of Insurance answering their complaint and she said NO because they were not required to do so. I explained the law and once again she was dead silent. As awful as this sounds, I actually was amused about how easy it was to play her- I know the laws but I played stupid to see how far I could get and she was putty in my hands thinking she knew more than I.
The letters were printed and sent to the appropriated people. I am sure Colonial will send to "updated" letters by tomorrow, overnight to the Div of Insurance and others lol but it is too late. I filed complaint with the Federal Disability people and Federal Dept of Discrimination. I have researched the past 3 months Colonial and UNUM (UNUM owns Colonial) The lawsuits from literally years ago are incredible. I am not done at all with this. Think of it this way- if their lawyers were any good, or could open their own practice or join a good practice they would not be working for Colonial/UNUM. They mostly settle out of court. Those of you going through what I am -- call their bluffs - involved Div of Insurance and Fed Dept of Discrimination etc. Keep fighting - there a lawyers out there who will these cases based on the situation on contingency. I will keep you posted.
Original review: I am not going to get into the lack of passion and organization Colonial Short Term Disability has through GIC in MA. They of course denied my claim even after I sent them the new law. The kicker- I go into check my appeal status yesterday, I see a letter they sent me that I never got email notification about or to this day a letter dated Oct 5-2018 they FAXED a request for medical records to one of biggest hospital campus's in country. And they ADDRESSED THE LETTER TO WRONG DOCTOR- A DOCTOR I DO NOT KNOW OR SEE-. Not one person would tell what the content of the letter was. There are so many Dr's at his campus! My Dr's last name began with a letter no even close to who they sent it to. They had no documentation in my file of the letter (so they say).
I think they asked for specific information about my health and are too scared to tell me. That letter will be found and I am pretty that is going to be huge HIPPA violation and I have the right to see what they sent - so if they do not have a copy bang # 2 - We all know Colonial and Unum deny everyone but my God that could be big issues of HIPPA violations when my Dr see the copy. This is truly a scary thing and although it sounds harsh- it one of the most stupidest things anyone in medical industry could do- they are requesting medical docs and there is not double information. They faxed a new letter lol. I am laughing and waiting going on 24 hrs for the appeals person to call and read the letter... no call... It is not good but how can they be so so without knowledge of the law.

I've read through A LOT of reviews with Colonial and almost all of them were 1 star reviews. I'm enrolled with Colonial through my employer, I personally have never experienced any bad customer service from the customer service reps. I will admit that it does take some time for Colonial to process your claim but I can't put all the blame on them. I can't speak for everyone but what held up my claim was that they (Colonial) requires that your paperwork be filled out to the 'T.' My doctor wasn't completing the paperwork as thoroughly as Colonial wanted which held up my approval. My accident occurred in Oct/17 and I didn't receive my entire payment until the middle of Dec. To some that may not be a long time but for me it was, especially with bills that were now becoming past due. Once again not ENTIRELY Colonial's fault but their approval process can use some work.
I suffered an accident at the end of Aug but I didn't submit my claim until this week (3rd wk of Sept.) because I wanted to ensure that I could submit all of my paperwork at 1 time and look it over to ensure that my doc filled it out properly. Today I received an email stating that they need more info from my doc regarding the date of my accident and when I'm expected to go back to work. I read the paperwork over maybe 15 times (literally) and I THOUGHT it was proper and complete. I called and spoke to a rep that was nothing but pleasant, she walked me through the next steps and legitimately sounded concerned for me and my case (I have a doc that wants nothing to do with this paperwork and refuses to fill it out after he's done it once.)
All-in-all, Colonial is a decent insurance company. It take a while to get your payment but I can't think of an insurance company that's quick to throw money at you. They want to ensure that whatever the issue is covered by your policy (like most insurance companies). Customer service is excellent and I always been able to speak to someone. Never had an issue with them taking more than they were suppose to out of my check. Pretty decent company. Only wish they would relax with some of the info required by the doc and expedite payments so that you're not waiting over a month or so.

Colonial Life processing time is very slow, you can't even speak with the individual who is processing your claim, you have to either speak with a call center rep, who usually knows nothing, or you have to submit an email, and wait 24 to 72 hours for a response. If they do respond by email, it's a generic email template, and your concerns are not even addressed in the email. They make every excuse not to pay you on the claims submitted. Very unprofessional company.
I would recommend cancelling all policies with this company, because you're going to very upset if you have to file a claim. If you have the opportunity sign up with Aflac, much better service and less hassles when filing a claim, Aflac pays claims within 3 days. Compared to Colonial life, it's been almost 3 weeks and my claim is still processing. Spoke with a supervisor, regarding the delay, and she was just useless as a regular Customer Service Rep. This company just takes your money, everything they promote is a lie. This company needs to be shut down, and all customers should be refunded their money, that they have paid into their policies.

Work switched to this provider and we had no other options. They never set up my account correctly, I was never given an insurance card, the login information doesn't work, I have no idea what my policy number is, but they sure as hell take my money every check. Their website takes you in circles, and when you call their call centers you're told to either know someone's 5 digit extension or hang up. They don't have operators or an automated help menu. I input my policy information from work and they tell me there's a problem with my account and to call some number, but they won't help me until I log into the website first. Went to the dentist and set up an appointment because I need emergency work done and then I'm told the day before that the information they gave me at work is no good. Been paying some form of dental insurance for the past 7 years and I have yet to be able to use it.

If I could give less than 1 star I would. This is the WORST company I have dealt with. They make the health connector look like they know what they are doing. I have NEVER written a review about a company before, whether good or bad, but this I had to do. I do not want anyone to go through the headache I went through. I wish I had read these reviews on here before signing up.
I signed up for this policy in April. They did not send me any documents. So I was under the impression it was not in effect yet. I was sick as a dog and still going to work because I thought the coverage wasn't active because I heard ZERO about it. All along it was active and they have been collecting my god damn money and I couldn't use it when I wanted. I finally called them and found out they had my address wrong and the spelling of my name wrong. The agent sat across me in a room when I gave her my ID with the correct spelling of my name and my address. Only God knows how she managed to mess that up.
I requested the correction and also that a correct policy be mailed to me because I NEEDED a physical copy for personal reasons. It's July 16 and I still haven't received it. My husband did a surgery and is out of work. So I accessed the policy docs online to see my benefits. Now I find out that he has no coverage when I know I told the agent I need coverage for him BECAUSE HE WILL MORE THAN LIKELY NEED IT THAN ME. So I canceled it this morning. Do not open any policy with them. The customer service reps and their agents are all useless and they will only cause you unnecessary stress.

My bank has been very helpful with blocking any further debits from this joke of a company. I am sure collecting on any disability claim would be a total nightmare!

My friend has Aflac and suggested I get an accident policy which covers my son who plays 4 different sports. My friend always gone on and on about the wonderful, fast service she gets with Aflac. I added Colonial Accidental Insurance through my employer. I've filed with them so far 4 different times and each time I've filed a claim it took 2 weeks or more for the claim to be reviewed and paid. 2 of the times I filed, if I wouldn't have called, it seems as if the claim would've never been processed. It is RIDICULOUS the amount of time it takes for them to review and pay claims. CHOOSE AFLAC OVER COLONIAL if you prefer to have claims that are paid within 3 business days. I will be leaving this company as soon as my enrollment period through my employer opens. They also DO NOT PAY FOR X-RAYS, MRI'S, OR CT SCANS, but Aflac does.

It is extremely unfortunate to find out that Colonial Life refuses to to pay out on a Short Term Disability claim, after it was determined that spinal surgery will be required after an MRI revealed that damage to my spine was far worse than anticipated. The reason for their determination was that I had sought the advice of a medical professional to the extent of damage and advisement for surgery. This surgery was a necessity but the effort for the Colonial Life representatives to gather, complete and submit this claim at the local level was completed and submitted expeditiously, but at the HQ level this final determination was also made expeditiously. It was apparent that the fine details were left out until after the fact.
In summation the Short Term Disability policy that Colonial Life offers has certain hidden stipulations, but they are extremely helpful, kind and cooperative until this benefit is needed, absolutely not worth the paper the policy is written on. “BEWARE!!” Signed; “A Valued Customer!!” The answer that was received from Colonial Life is a what I expected, the very standard, “were sorry”.
Too bad, they continue to received your monthly premium but when it comes to a need, “Oh, you should have read the entire policy, I should have brought an attorney to decipher the 'fine print'.” This just solidifies the overall insurance industry, not excluding Colonial Life, that their raking should be placed at what is found at the bottom of an ocean! This policy will be terminated ASAP, and will be marked up as a poor experience, and will recommend to others to think twice before signing the bottom line, or bring an attorney! The Colonial Life rating is so poor it is impossible to even rate them.
This review is being submitted to remind those who are looking for an insurance company to help them in that time that they may need help to carefully review the fine print, and DO NOT let a representative rush you into signing up for a policy that you are not 100% sure of, even though they sell you the full package deal and say that you are covered when you actually are not. Remember these representative are Salespeople, and they get their commissions and pay based on the number of policies they sell, they DO NOT have your best interest in mind. Companies such as Colonial Life WILL leave out details of the policy in order to sell the policy to lead you to believe that they will be there in the time of need. DO NOT allow their buy line "You are a valued customer," fool you, the ONLY thing that is of value is your money that you pay into the policy.

I signed up for Colonial Life because you never know what life will throw at you. Unfortunately I was told I needed a hysterectomy and they set my surgery up right away. I would only be paid for the night I had to be in the hospital which only comes up to $100.00. Are you kidding me? What the hell is $100.00 going to do? I have a house payment, lights, water, car, insurance, cellphone, groceries, 2 children, and anything else that happens to come up in a 6 week span. I sent my paperwork off in a timely manner and few hours before my scheduled surgery since I knew I would be on bed rest. I spoke with several reps that told me this was okay. Now I'm getting the run-around about post-op notes that need to come from the doctor. Since they must verify I actually had a surgery on the 4/18/18 date. Do they actually think my kids, bills and life revolve around them playing and dilly dallying with my money. They didn't have a problem getting my premium each month. But now I have to deal with them daily for another lie to be told to me by a rep.
Not all the reps are bad. But they're many who will try to rush you off the phone. And I'm not even about to play that game with them. I am pretty much convinced when open enrollment rolls around AFLAC or some other company will be my best bet. Extremely disappointed in the service of Colonial Life STD. I submitted a claim for a medical necessity. I had to have a hysterectomy back in February 2018. I’ve spoken with at least a dozen or so reps and one person will tell me that my claim is being processed then the next day I would call to see why they have yet to process my claim and was told they are unable to locate all my medical records that were sent.
Every day it is a different story with the reps. I ask to speak with a supervisor and still get the runaround. I feel at this point I am just being dragged through the mud. I have 3 children and a mortgage to pay for... This wasn’t some elective surgery this was medically necessary. I was told that they will not compensate me the time I was out due to being a pre-existing condition within the first year. However, I was diagnosed after applying with ovarian cysts which needed to be removed as well. They still will not compensate me.
My sales rep. did not explain this much in depth when applying for the insurance. It was told to not only myself but colleagues of mine that this was a very simple straightforward process. This has been nothing short of a nightmare. Also, they kept telling me my policy effective date was a completely different date than when I applied. Extremely incompetent, disingenuous company... I will never recommend this STD insurance to anyone. A colleague of mine had a gastric sleeve done within the year of applying for her STD with a pre-existing condition of obesity and was paid out no problem. I would like to know how this happened with an elective surgery.

It would take me out of work for 4 weeks. I called my representative and he faxed the forms I would need right to my place of work and gave specific instructions as to how to fill it out. I am on leave still and today is Wednesday. I called Monday to see if everything was in order and they stated yes. The check would be sent out on Friday.
Well I just received a phone call today saying yesterday (Tuesday) the check was processed and will be sent out next business day. How happy I am that it will be here before the date they originally said. Every phone call I have ever made has been friendly and informative. Since I have both policies they both have a health screening rider. My last two pap smears I called the 1-800 # told them the date and doctor and received $50 for each policy I had. So end total $100. Check came within next few days. For me having these policies have given me comfort and security for day to day life knowing I have something to fall back on. I have had no experiences that many have been complaining about. I encourage calling your representative and having them guide you through the proper channels and be able to maximize your benefits.

SILLY things like, "We can't process your claim" and "It's denied because no treating doctor is specified" (ok I was in the er and the er doctor was signed on the paperwork, which I supplied, as er attending physician signed electronically.) NOW the rest of the things... Wait, wait, wait. We will hold your claims until you forget. I supplied on a hospital stay for a grade 3 head injury over 100 pages of paperwork and was given a quick hospital stay $$$ and maybe then I will think it's done.
Well I work in the medical field and see that I didn't get compensated for a hospital admit, tests, follow-ups, and other services provided.** Over 1000.00 easy in accident benefits not paid.** I will stop here but will sum it all up with, look for better. At my part-time job we have Aflac and it pays quickly and almost without effort. I will try and convince my on front lines, life saving your life, primary job to switch.

Supposed to receive a benefit of 1500 a month for verified work time off due to illness or injury. Even with verified completed paperwork from Dr and physician they are only paying me 350 to my surgery day. Then they say they need further verification. The information they have clearly says I will NOT be back to work until the earliest 02/12/18. So after I am cut 5 ways and in severe pain once I'm released from the hospital and if I'm not already set on the street I have to muster the strength to get them more information that they ALREADY HAVE. They debit my premiums from my pay effortlessly. They should pay my claim the same way. CANCELING ONCE THIS IS OVER AND DRAGGING THEIR NAME TO ANY AND EVERYONE WHO'LL LISTEN!
Updated on 2/9/2018: Once I complained initially to Consumer Affairs the company released a payment to me right away for the balance that should have initially been paid. However, I am still on FMLA and my leave has been extended another month and obviously I am being "blackballed" since the complaints I filed. Once again they are not paying me timely. They have received updates certification documents from my employer and physician yet are not acknowledging them, or should I say not acting on them. Therefore, now I am facing eviction. I have made them aware of this and was told this is NOT their concern.
I feel this is their concern because due to them initially misprocessing my claim intentionally, my claim payment date was offset by 7 days (which happens to be the 1st 7 days of the month when bills are due). I also asked them to send me my STD Disability policy (detailed) documents and they sent a request for payment for the documents before I can receive them. So now, I can't seek legal counsel even from legal aid because they are not paying me and charging me to get the information that breaks down my coverage. I was approved for monthly payments yet, my 1st payment was only 1 week (the offset). Why would they send me a 1 week check if I was approved for monthly payments?
Do not use this company they will debit your fund from your paycheck like clockwork, however, when you need them very unexpectedly... They will let you down. The customer service is rude and unprofessional. They also will NOT give you a supervisor... It will be another rep pretending to be a supervisor. You've been warned!

I'm a newer employee so I did not have insurance but many other employees had Aflac coverage already. Many of us decided to get policies through Colonial because we either had bad experiences with Aflac in the past or didn't have insurance.
The employees that were already covered by Aflac were told by our rep. that they would be able to cancel their coverage and switch to Colonial. Come to find out he got everyone to sign up without consulting our corporate office. Our corporate policy states that the insurance plan through Aflac could not be cancelled until March when the sign-up date was. We informed our rep. of that and he came back with false papers he had printed offline, again without talking to our corporate office, stating the Aflac policies could be cancelled.
At this point everyone that had a policy through Aflac had called our corporate office to cancel their policies just to be told they couldn't until March. I myself was told my payment would be $6 a week or $26 a month for accident insurance and then received a bill for $79 for the month of August. Keep in mind, our rep. didn't even come in to talk to us until the end of September. I was being charged for 3 policies when I only signed up for 1 and for a time which was almost 2 months before I even knew about this company. This was never mentioned to me during the phone call with their rep, and was not part of their policy when I had originally signed up in 2007. Once for maternity leave and the other was when she had a hernia and was off work for six weeks after surgery. We have filed claims for other time off due to medical issues but have been unsuccessful in getting paid. Colonial gives the same song and dance every time - paperwork not filled out correctly, time was not within grace period, or benefits are not available based on the documents given.
She got hurt on the job and was off work 3 months, policy didn't pay a dime because it was a work related accident. The policy is one we pay for personally, it is not affiliated with her work. Prior to having surgery I called Colonial Life and received forms. I filled out my information and dropped off the forms to my physician and employer prior to surgery (less than one week prior). I of course presumed all was in order and after getting out of the hospital just assumed everything was in order.
After not receiving any notifications via email or phone and the two week grace period lapsed I called customer service. I was told I filled out the forms too early. I ** and moaned and was told they needed a return to work date. I had just gotten out of the hospital and was home on pain meds, I was told they needed new information, again about return to work. I said I have a post op appt with MD that day but that I did not expect to return to work for several more weeks. They facilitated my claim then (already two weeks late) and I received a check for 1 week and a letter starring that a "reasonable recovery period should only be 3 weeks". I just got my staples out and was still in pain, couldn't lift or bend over. They also stated they needed more info from my employer and physician. I called both to facilitate my claim as I could not--and cannot afford to not have money coming in.
2 more weeks later they still say they need more info but won't call either MD or employer. I again provided info (which was already noted on forms) and called both MD and employer (it needs to be noted that they never contacted me with any problems preferring to just deny claim). I notified both of problems and they both stated they had been in contact with insurance co and all should be in order. Still taking a direct withdrawal from my bank account but can't service my claim. Called customer service to talk to claim rep, too busy. Asked for a supervisor, too busy. Asked them to call MD and employer to facilitate claim, they can't do that. "Customer service is an incoming call center". There's nothing I can do!!!

Colonial is denying disability and accident claim saying they are not two different things --- the kicker of this is we were not even going to submit an accident claim. They told us too, because it was an accident and we advised them he had previous issues with this same shoulder. We were more interested in being compensated for disability while out to work. So we have spent literally hours, with phone conversations, gathering med records, getting letters from doctor to support what we are saying for absolutely Nothing. Talk about a rip off - take your monthly premiums yet pay out nothing.

I am VERY UNHAPPY with this company and how payments are posted. I made a debit card thru their automatic system on 8/26/16 and it still hasn't posted to my policy!!! Come to find out Colonial Life uses and depend on a third party to make their card payments. And yet nobody at this company can do anything about it, not even the supervisor. I also file a claim at the same time but it got denied because my payment has not posted yet!!! When they told me I would not have any issues with my claim. This was a COMPLETE LIE. I am so done with this company. I decided to stay with Colonial Life after my employer decided to DROP THEM because they also were unhappy with them. Truly sad and regretful!!

My husband called for a Life Insurance. The advertisement on TV said, there will be no medical examination to qualify for insurance. All information was given to your company. Lo and behold we were told that he did not qualify for coverage because of a certain medication he was taking (for heart disease). Boy do we play with words. You did disqualify because of his health. We can read between the lines (not truthful).

I had it finally got a hold of him 4 days after her surgery before it was even scheduled. Remind you I've been trying to get a hold of him. Asked him why he never called back. He was dumbfounded then asked him "Well why didn't you add her to the claim back then?" He said "Well I could have." Yeah that's right he could have but to his negligence in the company he works for he screwed up. Colonial made me jump through hoops, and re-provide info that I had already provided (calling it "reverification"), then they went out of their way to make the process as difficult and drawn out as possible... Now they have decided my illness is extending beyond the "reasonable recovery period"... Are you kidding me? Now an insurance company can decide over my doctor when I'm healed? Give me a break. I truly believe they make people do this in hopes that they will give up and go back to work before they are healed properly - but not me, I will be seeing this through to the end. They got their money from me every payday, and I expect to get the services I paid for.

I left work on May 27, 2016. I had a new hip put in on May 31st. They sent me my first check of $3800 on June 14th. They really came through and I am still waiting for the State, due to a glitch. The rules are pretty straightforward. You can download the form, fill it out, have your work fill it out, then drop it off for your doctor to fill out. Then pick it up, fax it in. You will get calls and emails saying they are processing it. It seems like most issues people are having are too grey areas, etc. I feel bad for many of you as I know how tough it is. Rules are rules, and there is no exceptions or judgement calls.
We were all explained the process when we signed up. If someone has a legit claim, and they don't get paid, that's a different story. It's not right to discourage others from signing up, because they did not ignore something pre-existing for you. I am in California, and work for Toyota, and Colonial came through for me. I would give 10 stars if I could. Thank you Colonial, and I think it's safe to say that it would be foolish to not sign up with you guys. I will end this by saying that if I bet 100 bucks at blackjack in Vegas, I hit my sixteen, I bust at 26, then I ask for my money back and get denied, I am not going to give the casino a bad review for not making an exception on that blackjack hand, lmao! I was medicated to zombie state. I could not work and my insurance said due to the nature of the illness no money was paid.
Today 2016 I have been hospital-free since 2009 but on meds. I lost my home because my insurance failed me. My car got stolen and my only income SSI was stop until I spent what my car insurance paid towards the theft. I had to live in homeless shelter a year. I purchased Colonial Life Insurance for disability coverage in March 2014 through the professional organization to which I belong. In January 2016 I went to my PCP with complaints of neck pain and tingling down my arm. She felt I had a pinched nerve and ordered X-Rays, muscle relaxants, OTC pain relievers and time out of work. After a couple of weeks of this regimen and no improvement, she referred to an orthopedic spine specialist who confirmed through MRI that indeed there was nerve impingement and spinal stenosis. I haven't worked since my initial appointment as I was instructed not to by my MD and have also had two steroid injections. I decided to use the disability insurance I pay for to help cover my expenses. The nightmare is beginning in the first phase of filing a claim: submitting the forms from my physician, my employer and me.
At first I was told NO forms had been faxed to Colonial Life. I contacted my employer and my doctor again. This time, Colonial Life said they received my personal form and the employer's form, but still nothing from the MD. Once again I contacted my doctor asking her to submit her portion of the form and she assured me she had done this weeks ago. Is the fax machine at Colonial Life eating forms? Are the employees of Colonial Life so incompetent that they can't efficiently put a claim file together?
I assumed that since this disability insurance was offered by a professional association in healthcare that the company had been vetted for quality of benefits, service, etc. and have paid directly from my bank accounts so all premiums are up to date. Ironically, I retired a few days ago (planned date, not related to medical condition). I wonder if there will be a road block to approval of my claim, if they ever actually read the paperwork. I still have symptoms so the retirement wasn't a "miracle" cure.

WARNING!!! STAY AWAY FROM THIS COMPANY!!! Here is my story. I have been a loyal customer with this company since 2002. My policies cover my entire family (wife, 2 sons: 16 and 3 and a daughter - 17). In 2009 I added additional disability coverage for my 2 oldest kids (my 16 yr old and my 17 yr old). Both of my kids play sports and my oldest son will be playing on a Div 1 collegiate level so the additional Colonial disability injury benefit seemed perfect due to any injuries that might happen.
My horror story with Colonial begin 11/30/2015. My son was playing ball for his school and had a unfortunate knee injury during the game. Our family Dr. scheduled an MRI which revealed a torn meniscus in his right knee. Surgery was scheduled for December 17th 2015, with 8 weeks of Physical Therapy following surgery. After the 8 weeks of P.T I gathered all the documents needed to file our claim and I told my wife "No worries. Colonial will cover us."
After I faxed all the information they requested my claim was denied a couple days later. I called and a representative told me my claim was denied because the Surgeon did not put a specific date the injury occurred. He only put a month and the year. I was in disbelief due to the fact that we knew the injury didn't occur before I added this benefit (2009). I then faxed over a detailed letter from the surgeon stating when the injury occurred and the Surgeon even added additional information that wasn't requested (which was very costly for us to obtain).
Several days later I called to check on my claim and was informed that my claim was pending additional information. The Surgeon added the date we came in to discuss the surgery options and this new date is considered conflicting information as I was told. I was then informed by a representative that my claim will continue to be denied because this type of injury is considered due to wear and tear over time and could not have happened in one set time or event (now the representatives are Doctors).
I requested to speak with a supervisor and I voiced my displeasure with this company, the runaround, the cost factor I have had to come out of pocket for to get these specialized letters and the unprofessionalism every time I called. The supposedly supervisor (Angela) informed me that the representative was wrong and should not have told me my claim would be denied due to wear and tear. Angela then informed me that all would be needed is another specialized letter from our Physician stating the actual date we took our son in due to the knee pain and the date she scheduled us to see the orthopedic surgeon. I then go out and get this specialized letter, fax it over only to find out the original decision stands!!! This company is a ripoff. Please stay away. I PRAY THIS LETTER PREVENTS ANY PERSON(S) OR FAMILIES FROM GOING THROUGH WHAT COLONIAL HAS JUST PUT MY FAMILY THROUGH.
PS: we were going to use the claim payment to offset the out of pocket cost for the P.T. Since Colonial screwed us we must now come out of pocket to cover our son P.T. We have paid into our policies since 2002 at a rate of 87.00 biweekly only to find out Colonial is a big HOAX. Thanks Colonial. You were there for my family when we needed you.

The representative that came to my place of employment said if I had to miss work, Colonial Life would make it less stressful by covering my days missed after 14 days. Colonial Life has done the opposite. I had emergency surgery in October 2015. I'm being denied "for pre-existing condition". Never had gallstones in my life but somehow they find a way to say my surgery was a pre-existing condition. My suggestion to anyone considering giving money to this company - DO NOT. I've opened an account for myself and put the amount I was paying Colonial Life into this account. That way I know I'll have the financial coverage if I should ever need it again. With me, like you, I have sent a novel size amount of paperwork, had paperwork submitted directly from my doctor, and the Medical Records section, all VA related. I was told on my very first call to Colonial way back then that I didn't have to do anything; they would do all the legwork and get whatever they needed. Not true! I had to fill out an Authorization Form three times; they said they never received it even when I had the fax confirmation all three times in front of me. If I called 20 times, I got 20 different answers to the same question. One call resulted in the CSR telling me that Colonial and the VA share no relationship of any kind.
Today, finally, the CSR told me that Colonial has known all along that the VA cannot produce the billing that Colonial claims to need. However, they continued to collect premiums. The agent that originally sold my wife and I this policy (as state employees) knew that I used the VA but said nothing about Colonial's balking at VA claims. I will be filing a formal complaint with the Florida Department of Insurance Services. VETERANS: DO NOT BUY A COLONIAL CANCER POLICY - COLONIAL WILL NOT HONOR IT.

I am a nurse and enrolled in my employer's short term disability. My policy was effective Nov 1, 2013. My right elbow began hurting and I finally went to an orthopedic MD in Dec. and was diagnosed with tennis elbow and was given a brace. During the appointment, I mentioned that, on occasion, my fingers would get numb. I blamed it on the cold weather since it only happened when my hand got cold. The Dr ordered nerve conduction studies and found that I had both carpal tunnel and ulnar tunnel and needed surgery to relieve the pressure. I had the surgery on 2/10/14. My last day of work was 2/8.
I submitted my STD to Colonial on 3/3/14. It is now 3/21 and they are still dicking around and I have yet to receive any answer or income from them. In the meantime, I still have bills that are due AND I have used up all my sick time from my job. I would advise anyone to NOT sign up with this useless company, they only want your premiums and they do not want to pay STD and make every attempt to delay any payment. I will be cancelling my policy with them.

I have had a life insurance policy and supplemental (cancer coverage) with Colonial Life for the last three years... I did get cancer and thought how lucky I was to have this coverage. However, once I started filing claims, I got the run around and excuses right from the start of why they would not cover me. They have paid on some of the promised coverage’s but it is a fight every time. They use excuses that they don't have the correct forms or codes or didn't receive the fax; my favorite is "the agent that signed me up had out dated paperwork and that's why some of my claims were not covered." Claims take months and all you will get is letters saying they need more information even if you call to verify that they have everything they need.
Honestly, I suggest to everyone not to bother with these companies. In my experience, the policies aren't worth the paper they are written on. They pay only what they can get away with and I believe they try to give you the run around so you will finally get tired and quit sending in claims. I thought I was protecting my children if something ever happened to me... This was a complete joke and added stress that I didn't need when they promised that they were there to help. They will change the rules mid stream with every claim you have. In my opinion, don't bother. This is a typical insurance company that can't be trusted. I have very little confidence that if something did happen to me, that my children would see a dime of the life insurance or if they did, it would be a very small percentage of what they claimed they would pay.

Sorry, I was told that my premiums would not increase in both March and June of this year. Today, I am told that this is the way they do business and that is all that could be said. With everything going on I forgot about the policy until May and at that time I submitted the cancer claim. We are now into Mid-August and they are still stating they need more information. They have gotten her complete medical record and a letter from the doctor as well. They even admit that they know she has cancer and it is not pre-existing but since the medical records are not worded how they prefer they are still denying my claim stating more information is needed. I have nothing else left to send them. I will be contacting the Insurance Commissioner and see if I can get any help there. This is ridiculous and I would not recommend this company.

I have had a couple different policies with Colonial over the last 7 years. I was going to cancel my policies in June because I had heard a lot of claims not being paid by fellow co-workers. When I told our rep (Helen) that I was going to cancel she ask why and I told her that I had heard a lot of bad reports from co-workers. I told her I had been off work in January for 13 days but didn't even claim it because of the hassle. She informed me that there is a seven day waiting period but that they owed me for 6 days disability. So I went ahead and signed up for another year and filed for the claim.
I received a check for $110.82. Even though I was off 13 days they claim that disability starts the day you see the doctor not when you are off work. I became ill on Friday, called the doctor Monday morning and he was able to see me on Tuesday. Even though the doctor signed off that I did miss work because of illness they refuse to pay anymore of the claim. (Now she told me I should have went to an urgent care facility the day I felt ill, that would have cost me more money that my regular insurance does not pay.) When I got ill, I did not have any idea that I would be off work for that period of time. I can not tell the future, thought I would be back to work in a day or two.
She mis-lead me to get me to sign up for another year. I have paid this company a lot of money over the last 7 years and they refuse to pay me for the four days that I missed work! I called to cancel all my policies and am now told I have to wait until next June to cancel because I signed up for a year! DO NOT LET THIS COMPANY MIS-LEAD YOU. I will be talking with an attorney!

Suddenly, she kicked and flipped the Bumbo chair (which is not supposed to be able to flip) right off the table. She landed smack on her head. I was originally told about Colonial Health Insurance in October 2010 by my employer. My employer did not directly offer health insurance, but Colonial had decided to offer a special supplemental policy for adjunct professors at my state-run community college. After talking to a Colonial representative, I signed up for Colonial's supplemental health insurance. In December 2011, I was having some back pain so I chose a "preferred provider" from the list. The preferred provider turned out to be ridiculously overpriced. The nurse practitioner there ran a few lab tests and I ended up with a bill for $660 just for the tests, in addition to the $60 I paid for the visit (incidentally, for this $720, all that ended up being wrong with me was a pulled muscle).
Lab Corp, the company that sent me the $660 bill for the tests, initially left out a number in my insurance policy when they tried to file a claim with Colonial. After I called and figured out the problem, they resubmitted the claim to Colonial. I never received a check from Colonial, but six months later I did receive a letter from Colonial asking why I hadn't cashed a supposed $90 check they had sent me, which was their portion of the payment for the $660 lab bill. Enclosed was a form to fax them if I wanted to have another check sent to me and cancel the one I had never received. I faxed them the form in July 2012, but as of January 2013 have never received the $90 check for their portion of the $660 bill.
Around the same time in July 2012, Colonial sent a letter cancelling my policy with no reason stated. By this point, I was more than fine with that as I never would have gone to such an expensive provider and racked up this $660 bill without the provider being on Colonial's list, but would have gone to CVS's much cheaper Minute Clinic instead. However, now in January 2013, I have discovered that although Colonial cancelled my health insurance in July 2012, they have still been taking money out of my checking account for an accident insurance policy that was part of their supplemental health insurance package when I originally bought the policy in October 2010.
At that time, the Colonial representative stated that the accident insurance was tandem to the health insurance (i.e. that I'm only eligible for the accident insurance because I was getting the health insurance). Hence, I think it would be more than fair to assume, as I purchased the policies together and the accident insurance was presented to me by the representative as contingent upon my enrollment in the supplemental health insurance, that when Colonial cancelled my health insurance, they also would have cancelled the attached accident insurance.
Furthermore, between July 2012 and January 2013, I received absolutely no correspondence of any sort concerning this policy I did not want and did not know I supposedly was still enrolled in. Nothing stating any updates on this accident insurance - no member ID card, absolutely no notification that it was still ongoing. Had this month's $17.92 automatic withdrawal from my checking account not come to my attention, I could easily have gone months more paying for a policy I did not know I had.
Colonial makes it difficult to actually contact a representative by phone. When I was finally able to locate a number and speak to a representative, they were condescending and gave me a runaround about the process and attempted to make me feel as if it should have been obvious they would only cancel pieces of my insurance policy. I am now requesting, in written correspondence, that Colonial refund me the full amount of money deducted from my checking account since they cancelled my health insurance in July 2012.
I do not feel Colonial Insurance has been forthright with me or communicated with me properly. I have little hope of ever seeing the $90 check or figuring out how to pay the $660 bill. In the end, I would advise anyone considering a supplemental health insurance policy with Colonial to check out CVS's Minute Clinic instead, where prices are clearly posted. It is also unbelievable to me that Lab Corp would initially file my claim wrong, delaying any possible insurance compensation; meanwhile sending me $660 bill for a few simple blood tests.
Finally, whether the lack of disclosure is intentional or not, Colonial benefits from cancelling people's health policies and then continuing to tack a $17.92 a month fee for accident insurance onto bank accounts without ever happening to mention they didn't cancel both policies. Again, from July 2012 to January 2013, I had absolutely no communication from Colonial indicating I still had a policy with them until I noticed the fee on my bank statement. Do not buy this company's insurance! They will waste your money and your time trying to communicate with them and get things sorted out later.

I work in surgery, so these conditions adversely affect my ability to stand; move fast; and be around patients. My first pregnancy was a breeze compared to the physical ailments that plagued me throughout this pregnancy. I began the process in late October 2012, with my last day of work being Sept. 28. It is now January 9, 2013 and I am still getting the runaround - we still need this and that, etc. They are requesting information from my OB going back to 2010. I'm not sure why. I had to provide a PCP that I haven't seen since a year and a half before my pregnancy. Again, there's no reason why. I've had the policy a year before getting pregnant.
Every time I call, I'm told all we need is this one thing. I called the doctor's office they are requesting information, and they said they sent it. Then I'm told by Colonial, "Oh wait, it's from this other physician the information we need." I was 45% of my family's income before becoming ill. I haven't brought in income since September. My Christmas, a.k.a. my birthday and my one and a half year old's first real holiday experience, was completely ruined. We have always lived modestly, never needed help of any kind. But my husband has since taken a second landscaping job on weekends just to make sure his son and pregnant wife can eat! I feel horrible and helpless and almost regret getting pregnant.
My mother's killer's murder trial has literally begun and ended between the time I stopped working and now. I will never recommend this company to my worst enemy. I will go through every relevant avenue to put their callousness and indifference to their customers on blast. Thankfully, I don't plan on having any more children. I got the policy to protect myself, but it made my life utterly unbearable. I get severe palpitations every time I call them, which are hazardous to me and my unborn daughter. Never ever use Colonial Life for anything. Even when I was in the army, I was treated exponentially better than these people. In January of 2012, I was at the lake on my stand-up jet ski. I had been riding for some time and hit a big wave and lost control. I fell off and the jet ski landed on my back. About a week later, I was having difficulty getting out of bed. I went to the chiropractor to have an adjustment. He wouldn't touch me until I had x-rays. He took the x-rays and discovered that I had a fractured vertebra. I then went to a medical doctor who told me to rest it for six to twelve weeks. I did so, and it got better but did not improve dramatically.
I had several more visits with the doctor over the next four months before I went to a spinal specialist. This doctor gave me several spinal steroid shots, but it still did not improve. I began to have numbness in my legs and lower body. Finally, he performed surgery and discovered that a portion of the vertebra was shattered into a dozen pieces. I have rehabbed and rested since then and am now able to work full time.
I have an accident policy with Colonial. I filed this claim with them, and after several months of bantering back and forth, they issued a decision that breaking my back on a jet ski was not accidental. If this isn't an accident, then there is no such thing as an accident. I am very upset about this. I was sold a bill of goods. It took three to four months to get an answer out of them. The salesman (who will say anything to make a sale) told me that all of these medical issues would be covered. The surgery cost several thousand dollars and I was unable to work during my rehab. I expected this claim to help pay those costs. Now, I'm stuck paying premiums for an insurance policy that is worthless.
I have the right to appeal, but the appeal is through Colonial. What are my odds of winning that? Slim and none. If anyone is using Colonial at your work, drop it immediately. Colonial is a typical insurance company. They will loan you their umbrella when it is sunny and demand for it back at the first sign of rain.

I had been a teacher in East Baton Rouge Parish for more than 12 years. Two years ago, I started undergoing medical treatment for a painful knot in my back caused by work-related stress. (I still have knot.) On July 26, 2002, I went to a physiatrist (physical medicine specialist), who gave me one of a series of treatments, an epidaural injection in my spine (under an x-ray machine) to relieve the pain. He made a mistake in administering the anesthetic prior to the epidaural, and injected the anesthesia into an artery. It went to my brain and I was in coma for five days. I was in the hospital for three weeks: I was totally disoriented when I regained consciousness and did not recognize my husband and daughter. I had months of physical rehabilitation, and right now I am seeing a physical therapist who specializes in balance and vertigo, Dr. Charles P.
I have permanent disabilities dating from that injection by the doctor. I have no balance, and have almost total hearing loss in one ear, memory loss and extreme mental confusion. I have been under treatment by Dr. Stephen Z, a neurologist, this entire time.
It was only after last Christmas that I was coherent enough to begin to apply for a disability retirement. For all these reasons, and because I can no longer drive (I suffer from extreme vertigo), I was approved for teachers' disability retirement this summer (my first check was 8-1-03).
I had been paying for disability insurance after I found out that I would have been covered by disability insurance when I had my daughter by C-section in 1991 and had to stay off work for a month. The insurance promised I would get $1000/month if I was disabled.
It has been very difficult to get the insurance company to honor their word. I received one check from them for $5000 last winter--it came in very handy. But to get a check each month I am supposed to go to Dr. Z (which is a hassle for my husband to take off from work and drive me there) all over again, even though my condition has not changed. Dr. Z has documented that on one occasion, they lied and said he had not sent the papers when he had.
Now they have done this again. They called me TWICE this month and told me by automatic recording that they were processing my claim, but I have not received anything from them. My husband took the paper to the doctor to sign at the beginning of August and yesterday I called them and told them if I don't hear from them by Friday I would take action.
I do not want to continue this policy, but I still have many medical bills and need to have one more check. I have just settled out of court with the doctor, who admitted negligence. But the legal system takes time, and the settlement check to me from my lawyer has not cleared at the credit union yet. Please advise me on what I need to do.
P.S. Last summer I gave the insurance company automatic withdrawal rights from my bank account in order to keep the policy active (previously the premium was deducted from my paycheck). Now, they take my money, but have not replied when my doctor sends them the forms they require each month to document my disability. My husband believes that I should wait until they give the insurance payment they are processing, but I believe I should stop their automatic withdrawal immediately. I don't know what to do. I think they may tell you everything will be taken care of, but then continue to procrastinate.
I should also mention that they have never said in any correspondence that the coverage wasn't for PERMANENT disability.
