My mother passed away 3 months ago and I was left as a beneficiary of an annuity. I filled out all forms and sent in with required notary done where needed etc.

I have never received a confirmation of receipt. After an extensive run around and multiple hangups I was able to talk to someone in customer service, clearly overseas. I was told they did receive my package and it was in the ``back office`` whatever that is. I was told I would receive confirmation etc. That was three weeks ago. So far, nothing. Not a letter, not an email, nothing. Constant run around on the telephone and absolutely no written correspondence. Terrible company. Next stop is my Congressman´s office I guess. I would never recommend this company to anyone. Total scam.

As everyone has indicated by far the worst customer service one can imagine. Beyond frustrating. In an infinite do loop with them not addressing my concern and answering incorrectly. The customer service on the phone is beyond reprehensible. It's as if they are trying to shed customers. Remarkably bad.

I typically do not write reviews. I believe everyone tries their best but in this case I feel totally ignored and neglected. I made a life insurance payment to my regular account not knowing that it changed from MET LIFE to Brighthouse. Met Life sent my payment back. I in turn paid Brighthouse. After they accepted my payment Met Life bounced the refund check that they sent me. I understand that mistakes happen but no one can find my $3700 payment or return it to me. It is impossible to get an English speaking representative on the phone and no one cares.I would not recommend this company and I plan on changing my policy as soon as possible. This has been going on for a month.

Horrible customer service. I called to update my mailing address. This took over-an hour of my time, speaking to five “customer service” representatives, getting three-conflicting statements. After all this, my address still was not changed.

Horrible. Life Insurance plan rolled over to them. They wanted over 2,000 to keep the plan going. Then 6 months later want over 3,000 to keep the plan going. Both with short notice. Now going forward my father will have a 1000% increase in premium to keep his policy. Because the “cost of the policy increased”. Elderly can’t afford to pay 12,000 a year for a policy.

I purchased a Brighthouse Financial term life insurance policy and the process couldn't have been easier. Brighthouse offered the most competitive rates compared to other carriers and I was approved quickly. The representatives I've spoken to have been knowledgeable and my statements are easy to understand. Overall, this has been a very straightforward process making me feel confident in my decision to purchase a Brighthouse life insurance policy.

Brighthouse Financials is a fraud! Stay away. My life insurance from Metlife was switched to them. After many years I had a life change and tried to get them to update the beneficiary and every attempt to email them with the info failed. Numerous calls. The insurance was until age 90. The agents made fun of me, ridiculed me and there was no supervisor to call on. The game they played was to get me to cancel the insurance because the price of $122/month for $100k until age 90 was not profitable for them! So did what scums would do, basically forced me to cancel because they did not want to update my beneficiary. You will fall! I promise you! You took advantage of an elder in their most vulnerable time.

If I could give no stars I would! Customer service for annuity payments is the worst and seems to me to be setup to frustrate the beneficiaries so they quit trying to get their rightful inheritance. They have stopped payments that should be going till January 2029 with no explanation other than a glitch. How long should a glitch take for this type of company.

My sister and I are beneficiaries to an account my mother had with MetLife which is now Brighthouse. We asked for a lump settlement in July 2022 when processing beneficiary paperwork and were told it had to be paid in monthly installments through January 2029. They stopped paying us is in June with no explanation. We have repeatedly been calling since the beginning of August and now weekly. Had a conference call August 7, several calls on August 21st, and again August 26th. No resolution. We were told on August 7th the payment was suspended. It was taken off hold and we would have a check in 7 business days.

Two weeks went by. Called again and it’s been a run around. They are beyond unprofessional. You are told it’s in the back office for review. It’s a bunch of nonsense. They are in the ** stealing the hardworking money that people in the US invested with them. I am reporting them to every banking regulator I can and will have to get a lawyer at this point. Originally my policy was with MetLife for term life insurance I purchased in 2007 for 20 years. At some point my policy became the property of Bright House. I am nearing the end of my 20-year policy and the monthly premium will jump to $1,100.00 a month. So, for 3 months I've been trying to get in touch with someone about cancelling this policy. I can't log in on their web site. If you call you get tossed around to 20 different Indian call centers. I finally found an agent 6 states away with another company to try a conversion of the policy. That fell flat. So, he sent me back to the Indian call center with Bright House. This company seems more like a scam. So, I did a stop payment on them with my bank. See if they contact me now. This company is a shambles.

I would strongly recommend anyone to avoid this company. It is the worst annuity company I have ever had to deal with. Over the last 20 years I have been a Trustee and Durable Power of Attorney for numerous people. Brighthouse Financial has been the most difficult and time consuming financial company I have experienced.

Over 20 hours of my time has been spent trying to resolve simple issues such as account statement access, power of attorney, mailing addresses, and tax forms being correct. Brighthouse has repeatedly made the same errors and same unmet promises to correct their errors. The customer support agents are often difficult to understand. The systems to get help are cumbersome and deeply bureaucratic. Rather than give good and prompt feedback to help resolve issues the typical responses are "you will have to wait for the mail." Oftentimes the issues has been that I never received the mail or received the incorrect or wrong forms from their mailings. Their agents are resistant to provide a supervisor for assistance. They don't provide an opportunity to have email communication or follow-up on time sensitive matters.

I have dealt with numerous financial companies and I readily admit most are straightforward when you have the proper forms and experience as a Trustee or POA. Unfortunately Brighthouse has been by far the worst company I have dealt with. Their errors and lack of good support has cost me and numerous people I represent unnecessary time and money.

Updated on 09/11/2024: Needed to update because things go from bad to worse. In order to withdraw my funds I had to get my driver's license updated and gathered all the proper documentation from the bank to ensure I could get a direct deposit into the account. Submitted all the documentation and when I went back in a couple of days later to see the status my contract was closed and I could not access any of my history. No notification of whether or not the request had been accepted (it had been rejected a few times before due to documentation) or that my account would be closed. Tried to find the correspondence history at least - nothing.

Called customer support to see what happened and they said that since I requested a full withdrawal my contract was closed. I asked how I was supposed to know that it had been approved and she said, "Well...it's being processed...so no contract means it is approved." Really? Then I said I don't see the deposit yet in my account and that it is because it was MAILED.

A large sum of money sent thru regular USPS postage mail. With no notification that it was happening. She confirmed that my bank account was on the information but it takes 30 days from the point the bank account is provided to get things set up. Anything received within that 30 day period would be mailed. I said the application for withdrawal gives the option for bank account information for direct deposit and I provided everything. But still takes 30 days to process so they just mailed it anyway???? I hope to god I get my money in the mail. And then have to go an deposit a check for that amount - meaning hold on to it until I can get to a bank. Even with that I am so glad I no longer have to deal with this organization and their confusing, poor customer service. Caveat to that is that I actually get the check.

Original Review: If I could go less than 1 star I would. I echo the sentiments of others on this site. The customer service at Brighthouse is atrocious. I have now reached the age at which I can begin making withdrawals from my 6-year shield annuity (or whatever the hell it is they call it) and they have rejected my request for fund withdrawal twice because my signature on the application does not match the one on my license. I have to go through and update all of my personal information and I guess "draw" my signature on documents in anticipation of them needing to be identical. DO NOT invest with this organization. Even if you happen to get good performance they will not allow you to actually take your money.

Similar to the complaints of others, I can attest to the poor customer service experience, delayed annuity payments, and inaccurate online account details from sub-standard website. Back payment issues were fully resolved today, following repeated calls and promises by 'BHF' to expedite the requests to bring payments current. Total time taken to resolve 120 days. Communication to the annuitant: None. Apologies: None. Estimated cost of my time and that of others to hold BHF accountable and provide interest at a nominal rate of 5% that should be paid for their inconvenience over 4 months: $ 2,000.00. I'll draft my bill and 'expedite it' to Eric Steigerwalt, President and CEO.

Brighthouse Financial customer service is very poor, does not seem to value its customers. They have held up my annuity payment for a minor problem that could have been handled quickly by a phone call or a email, but was delayed twice by using USPS. It is my belief that this is done deliberately so as to increase their profit. Brighthouse Financial has about 219 Billion in assets, and approximately 2.6 Million Policies holders. They always delay my monthly annuity payment by 2 to 3 days, which is profit to them. For every $1000.00 payment delayed by them invested at 5% = $50.00 per year. $50.00/365days= .1369 cents interest per day. Assuming 500,000 policies holders delayed at .1369 cents per day = $70,000.00 daily PROFIT. No wonder they have 219 Billion in assets.

There is no communication via phone or email. I switched bank accounts and autopay obviously lapsed. I had been traveling and didn't get a letter for missed payment due to this. No attempts were made via email or phone, both of which they have. I then sent them a wire transfer as well as an online payment, neither of which they are capable of confirming in their system via phone (it's always a concern when companies don't communicate in the current decade). As such, it's very obvious that policy lapses are considered a feature, not a bug, for Brighthouse. Their customer service was among the least helpful I have ever encountered and I wouldn't wish this company on my worst enemy. I also dug in and it seems impossible for me to update my autopay information through their portal, which is another fun system design to ensure more policy lapses for the company.
