I've made two service calls during the couple years I've had AHS. The first time was a quick and easy fix and taken care of quickly. The second had multiple appliances most of which were fixed well and quickly overall. But then the final item, a seemingly simple burner fix, has caused my claim to stay open and unfinished for almost 4 months now! The contractor is next to useless for keeping me updated and AHS seems to be just as careless when it comes to fixing the issue.

The contractor has sent out 3 different technicians a total of 4 times (meaning 4x5 hour block windows I had to set aside) and each time the tech said "no problem, just need to order the part and I'll be back in a few days". Not once have they come back. Not once did they call me to say "oh, guess the part is not available" or anything like that. Not once did they say "hey, it's been 3+ months maybe we should look into why this claim isn't closed", and that goes for AHS as well! To be fair, every single one of the tech were friendly and seemed competent. But whatever inventory and follow up process this contractor is using (or likely NOT using) has been a complete failure.

After calling to find out what was taking so long for this part... or more importantly the follow up to let me know what was going on, I was told that the estimated date of the part availability was changed automatically by the supplier they go through. So evidently, they would just sit for years and let this automated system just go through and change the estimated date a few days in the future without ever actually having the part and the contractor would not bother to figure out a workaround. And worse, AHS seems to think it's OK that the claim hasn't been closed and has been just as bad as the contractor as far as keep me in the loop on what was going on... or more accurately what they weren't doing still.

There is no way this should take 3.5 months (so far) and not have any real and definite date on when this will be completely. We have already gone through two major holidays without the use of our burners when we definitely needed them. Not to mention the inconvenience every other regular day that it would be nice to be able to cook with. My stove isn't so old that they would have to find an antique dealer to find the parts. I actually wouldn't be surprised if they weren't on Amazon... though I'm afraid to look as finding them there would likely send me in a terrible rage lol. The service center employees are friendly and try to be helpful. The contractors tech are friendly and seem to know what they are doing, but in the end, if they can't finish a job and then completely drop the ball when it comes time to follow up and do what is needed to actually finish the job then what use is having AHS?

Hello Ron, Thank you for making us aware of this ongoing issue with your burners. A case manager is available to assist you with this if you'd like?

Rating has been updatedMay 29, 2015

Ron updated their star rating from a 2 stars to a 1 stars after speaking with the company outside of the ConsumerAffairs platform.

My stove burner, the main repair waiting on parts this whole time (4 months and 5 days to be exact) has finally been repaired. Again, it took 4 freaking months to actually complete a seemingly simple burner repair and AHS seems to think that is ok since it took them that long to get on the vendors case to actually get this taken care of. Does AHS feel bad about making me wait 4 months without a burner...through 3 major holidays when I actually needed it?

The most they would do is "apologize for the delay" as if is was par for the course. After complaining that an apology was not enough they finally said they could offer a $75 service call credit good for one year so if I happen to have another call then the deductible would covered. So, in other words, if I have not other issues/calls within a year, it's phantom money.

No offer for a bill credit. I am not happy it took 4+ months to get a simple job done and pretty upset about all the incompetence and complete lack of urgency and the lame future service credit is the most they are willing to do. They did complete the job. The burner appears to be working as of now. But it took 4+ months, a total of 5 visits from the contractor (each with a 5 hour window I had to make available) and countless hours on hold having to call both the contractor and AHS to find out why no one was following through or to demand some kind of update. All the while AHS was perfectly able to bill me exactly on time without any issues at all with their billing software. Wonder what kind of service I would have gotten if I was 4+ months late on payments!

So I guess that is my updated review/warning. I got my appliance fixed but it was a long very frustrating process with a seemingly complete lack of empathy from AHS and a lame restitution. Worth it? Up to you. I'm downgrading my review from 2 star to 1 star because it seems AHS feels it is completely fine to make customers wait 4+ months to get simple repairs done and that is NOT ok with me.

I have been with AHS for approx. 10 years. We stuck with them mainly for our older AC unit. It dies at least twice a year. This year, it has died again. Called AHS, they sent a contractor. Contractor said repair was needed and that freon had leaked out. AHS would repair the unit but we were stuck with the freon replacement - nearly $700 worth on a 20-year old unit! Not to mention the fact that the unit leaks EVERY year! So I am to pay at least $700 every year until they deem it "unfixable?" I want the unit replaced by them, but of course I am getting the run around.

I have tried to contact them for a week. No one can get me a supervisor. They all say a supervisor will "contact me in 24-48 hrs." It has been a week of daily phone calls on my end and still no supervisor call. HORRIBLE customer service. They obviously don't care about the customer and apparently no supervisors EVER WORK THERE or maybe they have no phones. I am calling the Better Business Bureau, my local news channel, and my attorney. I am paying for a service they are not providing and have paid for a new unit already in the 10 years I have been with this company. If this is how they treat a loyal customer of 10 years, imagine a new customer. RUN AWAY from this HORRIBLE company!

After a "rough start", American Home Shield had me talk to a case manager who addressed my concerns and understood how much of an inconvenience would have been to leave my family and I without an oven for over a month. They decided to replace my broken oven with a functioning one which was delivered in less than a week.I am now a happy customer and I have regained trust in AHS.

    Original Review: April 30, 2015

Following a power outage on April 22nd my Whirlpool electric oven stopped working. I called American Home Shield immediately and for a $75.00 fee on April 23rd they sent a contractor to look at it. He verified that my oven doesn't start anymore and he said: "This oven is dead." He also informed me that the oven was at least 20 years old - which I didn't know and couldn't tell, since I purchased the house where I live in last July, and the oven was already there. A week later I called the contractor company to ask for a status update and they said that the part needed to fix the oven is no longer in production.

I then called American Home Shield asking what would happen next and rather than replacing the appliance with a new one, they insisted that they want to try to repair the unit by rebuilding it using I don't know which replacement part at this point and that it will take 4 to 5 WEEKS to get the oven rebuilt!!! The other option they are offering me is to take the money they would spend for the repair ($229.00) and use it as a credit towards the purchase of a new oven. After talking to 3 different American Home Shield representatives, but never to a manager they won't transfer my call to one - I find this situation extremely unfair.

First of all, I have safety concerns. I need American Home Shield to replace the appliance rather than attempting to rebuild it because, after learning that my oven is at least 20 years old and calling Whirlpool myself, for safety reasons I've been discouraged to attempt to have it repaired without its original part, or to have it repaired period. It's 20 years old, it did its job and now it died. We are talking about a built in oven which is underneath a gas stove so I am nervous that a repair or a quick fix on such an old appliance and without its original part available - could lead to something more serious. I don't want to end up with my kitchen blowing up or catching on fire, because this old patched-up oven could short out under the gas stove.

Also, it is unacceptable that I will have to wait for over a month to have a working oven back. The oven is an essential appliance of the house. It is used on a daily basis, especially in my case since I am a stay at home mom with 2 kids. I only have one oven and I've already been without it for over a week, so it's unheard of that I will still need to wait 4 to 5 weeks to be able to use it again. It is simply unfair to inconvenience a family in such a way, when in a matter of one day American Home Shield could have a new oven delivered to my house.

Last but not least, I find American Home Shields offer of accepting a $229.00 credit towards the purchase of a new oven at my own expenses a joke. If I had the money to buy a new oven I would have purchased it already, rather than staying without one for this long. I have American Home Shield for a reason! And that reason is to cover the appliances in my house that are not working anymore, so that I don't have to buy a new one. However, unfortunately, I realized that American Home Shield is not here to help its customers. Instead, it will inconvenience them even more and try to screw them. I will not renew my policy with them and I am filing a claim against them with the Better Business Bureau.

My boyfriend and I have a warranty that we got within the last 6 months but have lived in our house together for the last two years. Our AC unit out back stopped working about a day and a half ago. I stayed home from work today so it could be FIXED today instead of next week when it is supposed to be at least 10 degrees warmer. The repairman, **, was very friendly and quick to say the compressor was gone but since our unit was so old that he would recommend its replacement. He told me he was going to call it in and it should be replaced within the next several days, if not tomorrow. At this point I was under the impression that we were done. I paid him $100, (in cash: 4 $10 and the rest in $5).

He then sat in his van for 45 mins to an hour outside our house before ringing the doorbell saying he would like to check the attic to see if we might want to/should have the whole system replaced. He was up there for maybe 5 minutes and then went back to his van for maybe 10 more minutes and finally left. NOW for whatever reason AHS refuses to replace the unit or fix it. They claim that the unit never worked when we bought the warranty, but we've been using it for the last 2 years and most recently all of March and April as our power bill shows. I understand that they wanna cheap shot it and merely replace the compressor, but to not fix the problem and then make outrageous claims about the unit's past condition is beyond absurd. You won't be taking any more of our money but believe me, everyone I know will know not to do business with this company. If I could, I wouldn't even give you a single star.

This will be my last experience with AHS, God willing. I called AHS because I had a leak from the bypass valve that goes to my water softener. After making the service request I spoke with a representative, in the plumbing department, to make absolutely sure it was going to be covered under my contract. I told her exactly what was leaking and where and what it was connected to. She looked at my contract and assured me that it was covered. Grateful, I proceeded with the service request.

When the plumbers showed up, they didn't even touch anything, they promptly called AHS and it was determined that the repair wasn't going to be covered, but guess what, I'm still out the $75, exactly what I was trying to avoid by checking with a rep before they sent someone out. We have had a similar problem before when they sent out the WRONG type of service provider... Still out the $75 then too, just twice (once for the wrong one and once for the right). I cannot and will not recommend them to anyone and you can bet that I am not renewing my contract when it expires.

We have had American Home Shield coverage since we purchased our home in 1998. We stuck with the company when their reviews were terrible. We used their repair people and requested ones that were better than others and they provided them. In general, we were satisfied with their coverage and service although it took some trial and error. We paid for extra coverage on some items. We received decent service, although it took some trial and error. But then our washing machine of TWENTY YEARS broke down and AHS said it was OUR FAULT. Repair people have typically been prompt in returning request for service… UNTIL THIS WEEK when our WATER HEATER that was here when we moved in in 1998 failed to provide hot water, and the repair company, BEAR PLUMBING, has been horrible in just returning a phone call and setting up service!

A call to AHS complaining about this lack of response was met with resistance when I asked to make a complaint! I asked to change providers and AHS said I would have to wait longer (longer than four days from my request for service for NO HOT WATER???). I had to call Bear Plumbing TWICE just to get them to commit to a time -- and then they changed without telling us!! I am thoroughly furious with the plumbing company. AHS has gone way DOWN. IT'S A RIP-OFF!!! They are doing whatever they can to get out of covering our broken appliances. Isn't that what we've been paying for? We didn't break our washing machine. We deserve better response and coverage on our water heater. Their repair people do not inspire confidence!

I can charge you $270.0 to fix” and he said that “I am not recommend AHS to fix because it look like you did not gently moved your oven so I don't think they will cover”. And I said “I don't understand what you talking about” and he said that “I need $75.0 call service if you don't wanted to fix me”. I called to AHS and tried to discuss and also terminate my contract. Up to now forget about fixing the leak but I can't even have someone who can help me to terminate the contract. When I call they just saying “someone will call you within 48 hours”. I requested service for my gas range oven. The tech that came out said a new thermostat is needed and he didn't think a new one could be found since the range is 31 years old. I was told I would hear back from either AHS or his company. Over a week later, still no phone call. I called AHS, was told they would look into the status of the part and call me back in 30 minutes. No return call ever came.

I called again today, over 2 weeks since the tech was out. I was told the part is no longer made but it could be rebuilt which would take 6 to 8 weeks. That means the tech would come, take the current thermostat and 6 to 8 weeks later come back with it rebuilt. This also means that I can not use the oven at all for this period of time. AHS did offer me $240 toward buying a new range instead. This is completely unacceptable. I have to be able to use my oven. Dinner is made in the oven at least 4 times a week. We are having 30 people over for Mother's Day and I won't have an oven to use? AHS will not offer me any other resolution. Having this warranty is a complete waste of money. I will be canceling my warranty ASAP.

We purchased the home warranty service when we purchased our home. On 4/18/15, we went to turn on our HVAC system and noticed it wasn't cooling the house. We submitted a service request that evening and on 4/19/15 I saw it was assigned to a contractor. On 4/20/15 I contacted the contractor and arranged for them to come out on 4/23/15.

On 4/23/15 the contractor came out and checked our HVAC system. His diagnosis was that we needed to replace the condenser, but he said given the age of the system he recommended we replace the whole system. He told me he could either tell the warranty company that the condenser needed replacing OR he could tell them I needed to replace the system. If I went with the latter, I would at least get $3,000 from the warranty company to put towards a new system. I asked the contractor for a written quote so I could consider my options.

On 4/24/15 I followed up with the contractor again requesting a written quote for the two systems we had discussed. The contractor replied with the following, "Upgrade to Trane xr14 complete heat pump system. Customer balance 8400.00 after all credits, rebates, discounts." I asked for a detailed quote including labor, the equipment cost, and anticipated rebates, credits, and/or discounts and was told that their systems were flat rate and the quote was better than most. I was still not provided with anything other than a verbal quote for the second system (7500). Both quotes "included" a $3,000 credit from the warranty company.

On 4/25/15 I contacted the warranty company and explained that I was having a hard time getting detailed quotes from the contractor and asked if they could put me in touch with someone else within their network as I had some concerns. I was informed that I could not work with anyone else until the contractor provided a diagnosis. I asked if they had an in-network provider list that I could use and I was told that under no circumstances could they share that information with me until the first contractor got back to me. I was beyond shocked that the warranty company would not let me work with anyone else especially when I clearly stated that I had some concerns about the business practices of the first contractor. Nice to know they stand by their contractors, not their customers.

On 4/27/15 I had a different contractor come out to look at the system. He provided a much clearer diagnosis of the problem and provided a detailed quote for replacing the whole system. His quote came in $800 lower than the quote that included the "$3000 home warranty buyout"! The same day the first contractor asked me how I wanted to proceed. I asked him to provide the warranty company with his diagnosis. He asked if I wanted him to repair the unit, replace the unit through him, or replace the unit through someone else. I explained that we would work with someone else. He said he would take care of it. It's the end of the day 4/28/15 and my service request is still on hold. The warranty company said they have not heard from him and he has 24 hours to respond. If he keeps dragging his feet THEN they'll put me in touch with another in network provider and I would get to start the whole process over again.

I am extremely disappointed in how difficult it has been to get the warranty company to provide me with a contractor I can trust. Apparently I have only one option - go with their guy or get absolutely nothing from the home warranty. We have an actual problem here and their contractor is not filling out his paperwork and seems to be engaging in some dishonest business with AHS's customers. As a result we will have to address the solution and pay for everything out of pocket.

I thought the home warranty would provide us with peace of mind during this first year in the home. Instead I now have to continue to deal with a contractor with whom I am not comfortable doing business and I have to make multiple follow up phone calls to get AHS customer service to try to move this along. I now regret purchasing it and would advise others against wasting their money on a policy. I will have the new contractor document everything they find as they work on our heat pump and hopefully that will help as I follow up with the warranty company.

They were unable to find another contractor and they told me to find one. I did and they came, took it apart and discovered that the motor went and needed to be replaced.

AHS called and confirmed that there was no electric fire and that the motor was bad. AHS told me that it was a high estimate and that I needed to use their original contractor to do the repair or they are not going to pay for it. Like anyone would have Affordable Appliance come back out to do the repairs after their bogus estimate. So now I am out the repair costs, the original service charge and my monthly charge. Never get AHS, it is not worth the hassle.

I have a diabetic son who lives in our home and because of American Home Shield's complete lack of response and lack of customer service, after 3 weeks of the run around, we still have no working refrigerator and no acceptable way to keep my son's insulin cold. This company is a joke. Our fridge went out THREE WEEKS AGO. We immediately called American Home Shield and they sent out a local so California company called Accord Appliances, one week later, to fix it. The service guy handed me a WAIVER and tried to FORCE me to sign it! I read the waiver. If I had signed it, this company was basically off the hook for any repairs, issues afterwards, like leaking water, damage they may cause or any replacement. I refused to sign it. He left in a huff after speaking with my Dad on the phone, while slamming down my new cell phone on our kitchen counter.

We immediately called back American Home Shield to complain. They said they knew nothing about any waiver and had nothing to do it. They apologized. We expressed again, that we NEEDED a working refrigerator ASAP as our son is diabetic and his insulin needs to be kept cold. They set up ANOTHER appointment for 7 DAYS LATER- with another repair company affiliated with Sears appliances. That was two weeks ago! My son's insulin is still sitting in an ice bucket on our back patio. The stress is incredible! The repair guy from Sears finally showed up last Friday. He was nice and seemed to know what he was talking about. He said he could repair our refrigerator, but he did not have the part. The part needed to be special ordered! He said the part would be special ordered and delivered directly to our home and he'd be back this next Friday to fix our refrigerator.

Today is Monday. No new part and our refrigerator is still broken! And, my son's insulin is still sitting in a ice bucket in our backyard! American Home Shield's answer to our crisis today- is their "NEW generous offer" to reimburse us, if we buy a small $100 beverage type of refrigerator for our garage! They'll pay us up to $100 for a small refrigerator and all we have to do is send them the invoice! (Wow! How generous! NOT!) Fact- For three weeks this rip off insurance company has given us the run around and made us suffer with no working refrigerator! And, their answer today is to replace our standard sized refrigerator with a small beverage sized $100 refrigerator to sit in our garage?!? This is totally unacceptable!

I ordered a home protection plan. 11 days later, I called for a normal yet small plumbing repair. They had a plumber come out and he checked out the problem which was low flow in my one shower bathroom. He then called AHS and they outright rejected the claim. They said my home inspector which when I purchased the home 11 months ago should of found the problem. I advised them it was not like this when I purchased the house and things happen over time. Also, what inspector takes apart the fixtures to look behind the walls? Absolutely none do. Nevertheless, I still had to pay the $75.00 deductible. Needless to say, this warranty is completely worthless and cancelled. Do yourself a favor and look elsewhere for a home warranty.

They send out repair technicians who have no experience or knowledge on how to fix anything and make the situation worse. AHS will not do anything about complaints about a company, they will send out the same companies to fix problems they caused. I don't know how AHS compiles the list of companies to use but it seems like all the ones they send out have awful reviews.

I have used USAA as my bill pay service for many, many years, with never a problem and that includes AHS. Now suddenly we must pay every three months rather than my usual monthly payment. I spoke with a rep on the phone and despite my threat to cancel my account, he was ok with AHS losing my business. So I cancelled my account. Business must be very good when they can lose a customer that had no claims and always paid on time.

I currently have a home warranty with American Home Shield. Three weeks ago, I put in a service request for a malfunctioning HVAC. I live in Atlanta, GA and the weather is starting warm as it is April and the air conditioning unit is not blowing in cold air. I personally spoke with an American Home Shield representative and informed the representative that I lived in a condo and that the air conditioning unit was not inside my unit. The representative of American Home Shield immediately created a service request with one of its contractors. I scheduled an appointment with this service contractor as is protocol.

On the scheduled day of service, the contractor informed me that he could not assess my A/C unit as he is not licensed to enter the roof. I thus paid a $75 service fee as required by American Home Shield and contacted American Home Shield for another contractor to come out and assess the issue. American Home Shield called three companies before it found one that was licensed to enter the roof. This company was AirSolutions USA, Inc. based in Woodstock, Georgia. I scheduled an appointment with AirSolutions USA.

A technician from AirSolutions USA came out to assess the problem on a Thursday. The technician informed me that a part needed to be ordered and they would call once the part was received. I heard nothing on Friday. I called AirSolutions USA all day Monday, leaving messages - no one answered the phone and no one returned my calls. I attempted to contact AirSolutions again on Tuesday morning to no avail. I finally contacted American Home Shield Warranty who was able to get a hold of AirSolutions and scheduled an appointment for Friday, as the part had since been received.

I took the day off Friday and when the noted time frame had elapsed for when AirSolutions was to arrive, I contacted the company to learn that the company had ordered the wrong part. At this point, I have been without A/C in Atlanta on the 5th floor of a condo complex for two weeks. I contacted American Home Shield Warranty and was informed that no other contractor with American Home Shield was licensed to enter the roof and thus, the representative recommended that I do a cash out option; that is, American Home Shield pays me what it estimates the cost to repair the A/C will be and American Home Shield Warranty will write me a check for that amount so that I may contract with an independent contractor to fix the issue.

I thought this was great. I was informed I should receive a response on the cash back option within 48 hours. 48 hours elapsed with no word from American Home Shield Warranty. I contacted American Home Shield Warranty inquiring into the status of the cash back option. I was informed that no decision could be made because AirSolutions USA refused to contact American Home Shield Warranty with the exact issue. Now I am over two weeks without A/C and thus asked to have the issue escalated.

The issue was escalated per American Home Shield Warranty protocol. I was then contacted by the owner of AirSolutions, John, who stated he would come to assess the issue on Wednesday. To no surprise of mine, AirSolutions contacted me Wednesday evening to inform me it would not be out to asses the issue. We rescheduled for Saturday. After initiating contact with AirSolutions USA on Saturday, John informed me that he would not be out to assess the issue, but could reschedule for Monday. I informed John that our working relationship had been terminated due to poor customer service and lack of reliability.

I immediately contacted American Home Shield Warranty who informed me that another contractor would be contacting me to schedule an appointment. Mind you, I have been without A/C for over three weeks and I was previously informed that AirSolutions USA was the only contractor with American Home Shield who was licensed to enter roofs. Now, I am informed the opposite! After much resistant, I was finally able to speak to a manager; I wanted my repair request expedited. I was informed that I could not expedite the request even though I have been without A/C for 3 weeks in Atlanta. Also, during this time, I incurred an ant infestation because the windows and doors had to be open to cool my home.

I am highly disappointed in American Shield Home Warranty. I have been over three weeks without A/C and there is still no resolution in site. I have yet to be compensated for any inconvenience I have encountered. American Home Shield Warranty has shown a complete lack of interest in my needs and concerns. I will NEVER purchase a home warranty through American Home Shield because of this incident and I recommend others do not as well. American Home Shield should monitor and censor their contractors. AirSolutions USA has negative reviews on every social media site and all reviews pertain to the same type of situation that I experienced. If American Home Shield Warranty truly cared about its customers, it would terminate the contract with AirSolutions USA and only contract with contractors who were reliable and provide customer service.

I used AHS in the past and was delighted with the service and the contractor. This time, I called due to leaking pipes that caused water damage in my basement. I verified if indoor leaking pipes were covered before making my service request and was told yes. A plumber comes out and says it was not covered but they can fix my problem if I pay cash for the repair. Due to the emergency of the situation, I paid to not have further damage to my basement. And I paid my service fee.

Later, I called AHS because I felt I had been "scammed". I was actually told that I may have been "taken advantage of" because I was a single female. I also found out that the plumber had lied and said my pipes had burst due to freezing weather. It was 56 degrees and the damage was inside not outside. They fixed the problem but nothing was replaced. If I had a pipe burst due to freezing conditions, then there would have been an obvious crack or break in the pipe.

The representative said she (**) would call me back after researching the problem but never did. I placed 5 calls afterwards but no one has called back. My question is....Is it normal practice to employ a company that takes advantage of extreme situations? I am so disappointed and afraid to have other companies come into my home. What will the next contractor do? Rob me?

Put a repair request again in March 2015 on AC. Repairman came right away and said it needed to be replaced. AHS would only cover $730 of $3,700 bill. Called and cancelled warranty April 5-2015 (had to talk to many different depts before we got it cancelled.) By then they had taken the next month payment out of out account, so had to call back for refund. Said it would take 7-14 days. Have not seen refund. Called AHS again and they said we would not get refund, so we are cancelled and still paying for an extra month that we do not have service. They said that they prorate the amount due on refund and that we do not get refund.

I very highly recommend not using AHS or any other warranty for that matter. They take your money right away but when you want anything from them it takes forever.

We finally got in touch with someone from AHS who sent yet another company out. They said the compressor was gone and AHS would have to authorize ordering one. This was two days ago. Still nobody called and most of their customer service is rude as are these cheap companies they contract.

Now after 10 days without any air conditioning in Florida and still no call from anyone, we called and AHS had gotten the paperwork and said they would have to order the part (for a almost 30 year old unit) with an approximate time of April 29th at which time we have to call (again) to schedule appointment for them to replace compressor. By that time it will have been three weeks without air! This is not acceptable. We have people in the house with medical issues that need air!

AHS had charged $100 from bank account since the service fee has to be paid the same day. I informed AHS to refund my money on 4/15/15. The first customer rep. said she would reverse the fund. I called again on the same day to confirm that the refund has completed. The second customer rep. did not find any paperwork from the first customer rep about my refund of $100.00. She then asked for my credit card number so she could process the papers. She mentioned that it would 7 days to get my money.

Today is the 7th day, 4/23/15 and I did not get my money in my bank account. I called AHS again to find the status of my money. This customer rep now mentions that it would 10 days to get my money since they don't have the control on the processing procedure. I called again at 5 pm about my refund. This 4th customer rep. now does not know how long it's going to take. At this point, I had enough with AHS as I am getting around about my money. AHS still has not delivered any information about their company mail after a month I called them. What is the policy of getting refunds? My A/C (Condenser) went out on Wednesday, April 15th. It was late in the evening so I submitted a claim via the web and was assigned a contractor. I called the contractor that evening and left a detailed voice mail explaining what the issue was. Thursday rolls around and I hear nothing, so I emailed and called the contractor again still getting the voice mail. I started to get concerned so I called AHS and informed them of what was going on and requested to be reassigned to a different contractor.

Friday morning I finally get a call from the original contractor and they said the earliest they could fit me in would be Tuesday of the following week (Today). This was unacceptable in my eyes so I called AHS and the best they said they could do was reassign me to a new contractor. The new contractor they assigned me to had been out to my house before and did great work and they were able to come out a day earlier (Monday). The new contractor came out yesterday and figured out that I had a bad compressor and said they would work with AHS to get it repaired.

The next day (Today) AHS called me requesting that I pay, get this, $880 for 11 pounds of R-22 (Freon). Question: Why would a 2.5 Ton system need 11 pounds of Freon (My recharge is 4.6lbs)? I requested a second opinion and AHS honored it and will send another contractor out Thursday to diagnose. Question: Why doesn't AHS validate the recommendations of their contractors (Protect your customers)? AHS, Please protect your customers by doing some due diligence. Don't always assume the contractor is doing what's right.

AHS, your Customer Service department needs work. When you say you'll call someone back, DO IT. If you don't know the answer, just admit to it and find somebody who does. When he (MOORE'S PLUMBING) finally did come yesterday it was hours after promising he would be coming to our house as his first stop, and he came in complaining as soon as he walked in. He was completely unprofessional in every way, and he could tell my husband was annoyed. When he called in the problem to AHS, he didn't report the problem accurately -- which was a leak in the pipe -- he said it was a blockage, which (coincidentally) is the one thing that AHS doesn't cover. It was completely untrue and my husband spoke to the AHS rep and insisted on getting a second opinion, which is our right under our contract.

He was told that we would have to pay another service change of $100 and he said that was fine; then the AHS rep said he could not get a second opinion because "AHS does not have another plumber who services this area." This is absurd since we live in Monmouth County, NJ, in a very populated area, and there are hundreds of plumbers around here. Therefore it is ridiculous for AHS to say that they didn't have another plumber to send.

Obviously, the plumber who was here did not want AHS to send anyone else out here double-checking his "diagnosis" because they would see that there wasn't a blockage at all, and his call to AHS claiming there was a blockage and not a leaking pipe wasn't based on anything except a desire to get out of doing anything other than collect the $100 service fee. Now we are stuck with our plumbing problems and took all those days off of work for nothing. Waste of money to pay for AHS every month but when you need it they deny you coverage!! We are canceling and going with another company!

A few weeks ago, my laundry tub filled up with water and wouldn't drain properly. I called AHS, and a plumber came out. The plumber came out and said, "Well, we can't fix this without a main cleanout. That needs to be installed." $75 check written, and I still had a problem. I received a call the next day that AHS would not cover the cleanout installation; it wasn't under warranty terms. When I asked to have another plumber come out and get a 2nd opinion, they said over and over again, "A cleanout install isn't under warranty."

Not what I am asking -- I just would like a 2nd opinion on a possible, different solution. Apparently, this went off their script...and couldn't respond. Now let's think about this reasonably -- if you were told you needed to have brain surgery, insurance denies it, so you ask if you can see a different doc for a 2nd opinion...and they just repeatedly say, "WE WON'T COVER THAT SURGERY!!" Do you think you would lose your temper? Bets are...you would. Listen to understand, people...not to respond. So, I am having a different plumber, on my own dime, come out to assess it. $75 check was worthless.

Next, my oven stopped working. Called AHS again. I explained, "I have an older oven...not every technician will work on them." Sure enough, they request a technician who said, "Oh goodness! Glad you called and mentioned that. Yeah, we don't work on O'Keefe and Merritt...You need a specialty service." Called AHS again. Let's see how this goes.

I had a problem with a refrigerator that died. First problem was getting the first service call. They made the appointment but it was a no show. I called back and was told that that company could not service a closed system. They told me they were having trouble finding someone who could. As it was a Sears fridge I called them myself and arranged for the call. Turned out it was a bad compressor. A part was ordered and I waited several days for it to arrive and the tech to return. About 3 weeks has elapsed.

The same day after the tech replaced the compressor it started making the same noise it did before. I Called in and another call was placed. I waited another week for the tech to return and finally I was told it was a bad compressor. Now 6 weeks have passed and am trying to feed a family of 6 out of a 40 qt ice chest. After several days of calling back and forth I was told there was nothing they could do until it completely broke. So rather than buy food and take the chance of it all going bad again, we are still using the ice chest for anything that might spoil and only keeping drinks in the fridge. The noise is getting worse but still not dead yet. I canceled my contract and am having to buy a small, used fridge for now. Don't trust this company to follow through with their promise of good service or anything else.

I paid for the systems warranty on my house for 5 years and my A/C unit needed service this last week. The system is older, which is one reason I have the warranty. They have a clause to not pay for the coolant on older systems which meant they replace the part and I am stuck with a $900 bill. The AHS warranty is therefore pretty much worthless on older systems. Since newer systems are typically still covered under manufacturer’s warranty the warranty is basically worthless. Service calls are $75 through AHS. Going direct to my local A/C company a service call is $65. Most other items covered by AHS like ceiling fans or garbage disposal, the items are less than a service call or very near. If they replace a fan you don't get to choose from whatever you want. They will replace with a similar quality, but whatever style they have, so again, might as well self-insure and not bother giving away your money for no actual benefit.

I opted for the cash out on my A/C unit as I didn't want to spend almost $1000 on my 15 year old A/C unit. They have not told me how much I am going to be getting for the cash out. They closed my service ticket. I asked for an email stating that they will be contacting me or giving me some sort of cash out and they will not send any written communication. They assured me the call was recorded, which does me absolutely no good. I expect fully that AHS will drag out this process until my contract is up in 36 days and just drop it or send me near nothing if I am lucky enough to actually get a cash out.

Awful service. Awful product. Too much money wasted for nothing. Expensive lesson learned. Hopefully this post will help some people save some money. Self insure!

My experience with AHS is generally very good. Submitting it online is very easy and quick and then I immediately get a response from them and the local person they choose so everything works great, except for one small detail. When you get online to submit a claim, they list a bunch of things that might be wrong with your house and you have to choose one from the list. There are several items that they cover that are on my contract but are not among the choices that they present. So I just have to pick something at random that is as close as I can get.

Also, it's nearly impossible to tell them what my problem really is. They intend for my submission to them to explain what the problem is but it's really hard to do that. I wish they would make it easy. I realize this is probably a big programming problem, but I wish they would look at my contract and see what's covered and give me the choice of everything that's on my contract, not just the 15 most likely things that everybody calls about, which is what they apparently do now.

If they were to make the text box such that it didn't include very many spaces like Twitter, then they wouldn't have to get a whole lot to work. I can explain my claim in a few words. The request would have to be reviewed by a human and I'm sure, currently, it's all automatic. I say I have a leak and they send me a plumber, and when the plumber calls, I have to tell him what the problem really is. So I don't know if the text box would be fine, though I bet they will say "No, we just can't do that." The better thing would be to add 10 or 15 new items to that list and maybe they'll hit me more often.

One time I had a ductwork problem, but that's not an option on their list. So I had to figure out that a duct is in the AC system and the only thing they have to do with air conditioning is 'air conditioning isn't working'. So I just have to choose that. And if they could just expand that to include some of the other common things, then they could still do it automatically. They wouldn't have to have a human, but that would be more likely to hit me and when they do hit me, then it's extremely easy. When they don't, I just have to go through that whole strange step of figuring out which one is going to get me the right service professional and tell him what the real problem is. But other than that, the process is great.

I had AHS for 2 rental condos that I own. I called January 27, 2015 to cancel both. I noticed that my credit card was charged on February 2, 2015 for both. One charge was reversed on February 12, 2015 but the other one wasn't. I called back and informed the CSR that I was charged but I had cancelled the plan. The CSR said that he didn't see that the plan had been cancelled but would cancelled it. I inquired about the February 2, 2015 charge being reimbursed. He said someone would be calling me back to handle that. I never heard back from anyone.

Then, March 2, 2015, I was charged again. I waited until March 24, 2015 to call because I thought maybe it was talking some time to process. The first CSR that I talked to said that she could see that I cancelled in February and that the March payment was being refunded but it takes some time to process. The refund was approved on March 12, 2015 (or something like that). She said she couldn't do anything about the February payment because she didn't have a record of the cancellation request. She said I would have to speak to someone in retention.

I spoke with a CSR from the retention department and gave her the history. I informed her that I requested this to be cancelled at the same time that I cancelled the policy for another unit. She reviewed the notes for the other unit and said that there was nothing in the notes about cancelling for this unit. At the end of the call, she informed me that I would be refunded for the March payment and that it was processing but for the February payment, she would have to have the call rebuild to verify that I made the request. She said it could take up to 2 weeks. I gave it almost 4 weeks.

I called back today, April 20, 2015 and the CSR told me that according to the notes, I am not due a refund for February and March because I did not cancel before February and March. I informed her of what I was told before and asked for a manager. She took down my contact information and said someone will contact me within 24-48 hours.

If they change the coil they have to also change the outside unit in order for it to work and that it would be our responsibility to pay for the unit. I have spoken to several people including a case worker in the complaint department. But what no one can give me a satisfactory answer to is why have I paid insurance for 10 years and our system is now obsolete and they can't replace it without replacing the AC, how is that truly our responsibility? Our contract clearly states that if for any reason the AC unit needs to be replaced, it is covered. It does not say if the parts are obsolete then it is the homeowners responsibility. My next step is the news and a lawyer.

Also they claim they are not responsible for any damage to my home when replacing the unit. The contractor wants over $800 to bring the water heater "up to code" which other plumbers have indicated is a scam - this is a 9-year old house. I tried explaining this to the person handling my ticket at AHS, but this fell on deaf ears. AHS will only cover $335 to have an outside vendor replace the unit. You can't purchase the tank for that amount, let alone begin to cover the labor costs. This too fell on deaf ears. We are very disappointed.

Woke up this morning and found that my AC unit was not cooling. The inside unit was running but not the outside fan. Called AHS to put in a Service Request. After answering all of the automated system questions it told me the name of the service contractor. My problem: This particular contractor two months ago attempted to service my heating system. After two attempts and submitting a false report to AHS, a different contractor was sent for a second opinion. The second opinion contractor found the problem and has repaired the heating system. After finding out the contractor AHS was sending out to service my AC unit, I called by and went thru the automated system until I was able to SPEAK TO A LIVE PERSON. But this is where my problem started. The woman that I spoke to told me that "I HAD NO CHOICE BUT TO HAVE THIS VENDOR SERVICE MY SYSTEM".

I explained to the woman the issues I had with this contractor and that I did not want them in my house ever again. She then told me again that "I HAD NOT CHOICE". No matter what I said to her about this contractor and the problems I had, she still told me "I HAD NO CHOICE". She could not change the service contractor because that is whom the SYSTEM SELECTED. If this contractor could not service my issue in the allotted time (Today is Friday and they have until Tuesday) then I could CALL BACK and they would select a different contractor. As long as the contractor stated they could service my AC unit by Tuesday of the following week "I HAD NO CHOICE". I don't understand, I am telling her I do not want the contractor the SYSTEM SELECTED in my house but that did not matter.

The last words she spoke to me were "They worked on your Heating System last time and this is your AC system. Maybe you will have BETTER LUCK WITH THEM THIS TIME". I waited a few hours and called back hoping to get a different person. I did, but was told the same thing: "I HAD NO CHIOCE". This woman went as far as calling the contractor and had us on a 3-way call to make sure they could service my AC unit on Tuesday as stated. The contractor said that they could but would put me on a cancellation waiting list. I have been with AHS since I purchased my house 17 years ago and have NEVER received service like this. Apparently it does not matter what the customer wants, it's who the SYSTEM SELECTS that matters. My rating for customer service, value and coverage is solely based on the way they use to do business before the SYSTEM SELECTION take over. My rating for the service I received today is -3 STARS.

After that, the plumber would use a snake to unclog the tub. I gasped at the cost and AHS said I could get a free second opinion but if I did that, I would then be obligated to have the work done if that 2nd opinion agreed with the estimate.

I've been well treated by AHS in the past (I don't call them if I can help it) and they have been prompt, efficient and well-qualified. I am an AHS customer since January 2015 and so far I have made 2 claims and both of them have been just a miserable experience. The first claim on a refrigerator, took their vendor about 5 visits over 2 months and seems like they have no clue as to what's wrong with it and so they are doing a trial and error process and the vendor also wanted to charge me a second trade fee. AHS send multiple messages to the vendor to send in a senior technician but it is always the same technician who comes in! The last visit by the vendor was yesterday and hopefully this visit has fixed the issue-will wait and see!

My second issue was with a duct out of my bathroom exhaust being broken-a bird got into the attic and broke this and when I called AHS, I told this to the representative and he filed the claim and assigned the work to an electrical vendor. When that vendor called me to schedule an appointment, I explained the issue to him and then they said this is a duct work issue and then AHS scheduled a different vendor who came in and saw the broken duct and said this is a plumbing issue! But I had to pay half of the trade fee since he was there! but he said when the plumber comes in I will not have to pay again.

I called AHS while the vendor was still there and they confirmed it. Next day morning I got a call from the vendor and AHS saying that my claim is denied since it was caused by a bird and that is not covered under the policy! I called back and explained that I had mentioned that it was caused by a bird when I made the claim in the first place and so they put my claim in for a dispute and said a supervisor will look into the claim and call me back in 2 days.

They did not and I called AHS, they said they are working on it and I'll call back within 24 hours. Today (4/17), it is 8 days since I made the payment and 7 days since I disputed the claim and nobody from AHS called me back even once. So I called them again today morning (my 3rd call this week for this issue) and they want me to wait again for 24 hours and would not let me talk to a supervisor and after a 20 minute call send me to a voicemail and I had to leave a message. I worked all my career in customer service and I just can't believe that this is happening but as of now I am still waiting for that call!

AHS contacted me and after reviewing my story and my invoice, have agreed to pay the full cost for the external vendor. The representative I worked with was great...I am thrilled to have this resolution. Still a little sore I had to go through this all to get a toilet fixed but happy they stepped up in the end.

    Original Review: April 17, 2015

Oh AHS, you let me down. I own a 1 bathroom condo unit with an older model toilet. This toilet started leaking. I called AHS and they assigned Vendor 1. Made arrangements for him to come out the next day. Took the day off of work and waited. He showed up only to tell me he couldn't fix my model toilet. AHS assigns Vendor 2. Vendor 2 gives me an 11-2 window for the next day. Take off work again. Vendor 2 never shows. Remember, ONE toilet in my unit. I call AHS. Because Vendor 2 promises to come out the next morning, there is nothing they can do. Take off work day 3 for Vendor 2's 10-12 window. He shows at 2:30, starts work, and randomly leaves without saying anything to me and doesn't return.

After an hour, I call Vendor 2's boss who tells me the plumber injured himself and won't be completing the job. They had notified AHS an hour ago and no one called me. The kicker? Vendor 2 had disconnected my toilet so now instead of a leaking toilet, I had nothing. AHS tells me they are attempting to find some else to come out. If they can find anyone in 2.5 hours, I am authorized to get an outside vendor and be reimbursed. I hear nothing and call an emergency plumber who informs me Vendor 2 royally screwed things up and now my job is going to be twice as expensive. During this repair, AHS sends me notice they found a vendor... which turns out to be Vendor 1, the guy that couldn't fix it three days ago. Now, I’m told I can submit for reimbursement and see what they grant me. They damage my toilet, waste 3 work days, and cause countless headaches. I will be cancelling my warranty.

That's been a drag. That's not necessarily really fair.

AHS finally ordered us a new washer. I just wish it hadn't taken 5 weeks to resolve this. Laundromats are not cheap when you have a large family. We had problems with them about our dishwasher but I think that was more the repair people than AHS other than that they have done just fine.

    Original Review: April 15, 2015

Our washer broke & was reported on March 12. It is now April 14 & still no washer. LG no longer makes the part needed. Today they AHS said they found the part but it is the same part # that has already been shipped to us twice & it does not fit our washer.

It was a painful process when I submitted a claim with AHS. What they do is even though you make the payment of the co-pay, their system will continue to bill you even though it is taken care of. The bookkeeping is sloppy between the contractor and Home Shield so I'm not impressed with that. They kept hunting me for almost a year and a half of a co-pay that I had already paid. When once the thing gets hung up in the system, even if you have a new repair issue, they won't even allow you to make a reservation to have the contractor come until you pay that, which was very, very sad for me and I had to literally go through them saying "I have paid. I have paid."

I even gave them the proof of payment with my VISA card. It just took forever, and meanwhile, the repair that's supposed to have taken place to fix the toilet clogging they never showed up until it was cleared and it was all due to the fault of the contractor and American Home Shield not getting things properly entered into their system, and that caused me a lot of problems. Furthermore, there was also an unpleasant instance that I had with one contractor that despite my repeated request to call me back with when he can go and fix it, he never returned my phone calls and I had to call American Home Shield which is even tougher to get hold of with too many voicemail prompts and voicemail messages. It's very difficult to deal with these people but once they do it, they do it okay but I'm not very happy with them.

My experience with AHS has been really good or really bad. We've had two really good experiences after the first really horrible experience. So it's a little bit of mix. First claim, AHS sent a plumber from Plumb Genius who was just horrible. It was the first after we moved in the house. We had three faucets that were leaking. They came in and didn't even look at the faucets. They didn't touch the faucets. They went back out to their truck and sat in their truck for almost an hour.

They came back in because I had another guy here installing a hot water heater at same time and they said "We've talked to American Home Shield and your request isn't covered because you turned it in too soon. If you had waited a few weeks..." Our policy was in effect. There's no question about that. They would have covered it but they're not really good on plumbing.

At that point, I was ready to cancel because we had paid about $100 for a couple of months of coverage only to be told that you can't turn something in as soon as your coverage is in effect, because I had turned in the hot water heater as we were moving into this house and it was leaking into the floor and gas was leaking from it. There was no problem with replacing it for $1,100 but I've still got two faucets leaking from that first experience. I don't know whether, since it was turned down originally, that it would be covered if I turned them in again. I don't know what to do about that but until now I’m still blaming the plumbing company, not AHS.

Second claim was when we needed an electrician. He was wonderful. There was a mistake made with him regarding the bill. We need to pay the $75 for him because he fixed everything. He had an email on his phone that said he wasn't supposed to collect from me. I had a check ready to hand to him but he said no. That's been a while ago and we never got a bill or anything until yesterday and I'm going to pay that. The third claim was a heating problem. Our heater wouldn't stay on. The pilot ignition was bad but the guy who came was wonderful.

Calling for claims means you have to be on hold for a while but the only problem we ever had with that was the electrician. That was another part of the confusion because I called in and told the person that the hood over the range, the light, and the fan weren't working. The cust service rep and I both couldn't decide whether it was an appliance call or an electric call. First we talked about an appliance and then I said "No. I think it's probably the electricity. There's probably some problem with that." So they sent out the electrician and he fixed it.

Then I got a call from some appliance people and they were kind of upset because they thought they were supposed to come out and I said "No. That was supposed to be canceled." The rep said she would just cancel that. So then we got a call later saying we owed $75 and I thought it was for the appliance people that never came out. So I disputed that. I just called the electrician and talked to him and he went through his records. We got that straightened out.

When I started, it was $50 originally. Now it's gone up to $75, which I wasn't too happy about, but then that's the sign of the times. But they really have handled everything real well through the years. With my recent claim however, I had a refrigerator problem and they haven't been out to fix it. I have been, what I thought was reliable customer for over 10 years, filing very few maybe not even 6 claims with AHS, & just days ago when I needed them when my a/c went out, the authorizations dept. denied out claim due to me having pine straw on my outside unit. It sounds to me like they are just trying to deny the claim instead of fixing the problem, like their policy states. The worse part is less than a year ago an awesome company came out to add freon & they stated all was well, so this time around we requested the same familiar company & service and were told that we couldn't use them.

Now the new company which barely speaks 10 words to me, tells AHS, they think it is on us, due to lack of removing pine straw from around the unit. Now I'm not asking for a new unit, but I just want mine to work. Why can't AHS, just comply with their policies. So folks who are complaining of an appliance like a dryer, remove your lint trap, because if lent is found they would fix or replace due to debris. But maybe if I added up the hundreds we've paid every year since 2000, AHS, would realize they already got paid to buy us a new unit.

Our clothes dryer has been non-functional for almost a month (3.5 weeks). It is still not working. Placed initial call on March 18. Tech came out within a couple of days, said diagnosis needed parts ordered. Tech was supposed to come back on March 26. Tech never came out (I had taken off work). Tech came out March 27 instead (another day off work). Claimed he fixed the issue, and ran the dryer before he left for a few minutes. I advised the tech that the dryer had a burning smell and he said it was normal.

Within 30 minutes of the tech leaving, the dryer broke again. I called the company and they sent another tech out on April 8. The new tech stated that the dryer was not properly diagnosed the first time, which caused not only the parts that were replaced to break, but additional parts now had to be replaced. They are now placing an order for the additional parts, which are expected in sometime next week.

After the parts come in, they will call to schedule an appointment. By then it will be a month without a clothes dryer. Not only are we paying the monthly premium, but we also paid the $100 deductible for this call, and have spent close to $100 at a laundromat over the past month. Each time I have called the reps over this issue, they sound uncaring, rude, and start reading me my contract, stating that there is nothing more they can do for me. I asked to have a different company come fix the dryer and they refused. I asked how long they would let this go on and they said indefinitely.

AHS, you have lost this customer of 12 years. And I will share my experience with any homeowner I know. Mind you, this is not the first bad experience I have had with you, or I would not be writing this review. You have disappointed us over the past couple of years. We will take our business elsewhere. The service tech did not exactly push to get the new unit ordered, and in fact, deleted a message telling him to move the project along. In trying to contact Union Plumbing in Las Vegas, their phones are busy, it is not an easy task. The original replacement project was not truly acceptable in that the recirculating pump was put in at an angle, not a professional job. The circulation pump then froze up, another service call. That tech told us he would submit the claim and get back go us. That has been at least 1 week with no reply.

I then called the AHS office and was told that I would contacted the next day. That was about 3-4 days ago, no reply from that person, **, and as I have spent an entire day trying to talk to someone, nobody other than the automatic recordings answer. It sounds like there is either nobody working, they can see my phone number and will not reply, or they are out of business. This is service that is about as poor as it can get. We had an AHS contractor come to our home to look at our central air and heat. To summarize, he recommended that the interior unit be replaced, then did the installation incorrectly. He flood the evaporator, which ruined our exterior unit on our home. Of course, we didn't realize this and called him back due to the unit malfunctioning. He then recommended that the exterior unit be replaced, which cost us over $500. But the new exterior unit was ruined for the same reason as the first. After getting nowhere with AHS customer service, I posted a negative review. At that point, I was contacted by a case manager who finally began to help us resolve out issues. We requested that another AHS contractor take a look at the work that the first had done. At that point, he explained that the initial installation was botched and caused all of the damage and cost thereafter.

AHS did pay 100% for all further repairs, and agreed to refund the service fees ($75 x 2) we had paid the first contractor to come back and attempt to repair his botched installation. However, I've only ever received a refund for one of the service fees, and AHS refused to refund the cost of having to replace the exterior unit ruined by their contractor in the first place. The case manager actually recommended that I try to have the contractor who ruined the unit reimburse me! The case manager that had been so helpful has since stopped returning phone calls, and the customer service department, who stated that they would have to get with the case manager and get back with me within 24 hours, has failed to follow through as well. I had paid extra in addition to my contract to get my refrigerator covered when I started my contract. Well I called because my refrigerator stopped working the representative told me it is not covered and there was nothing they could do. So I dug out my contract and called back and talked to someone else who told me "yes it was covered." So they sent someone out to look at it. The contractor said they needed to order some parts.

To make a long story short I have wasted hours on the phone and got no good answers and have been with out a refrigerator for 10 days now and have no idea when it will get fixed. As soon as it does I am canceling my contract with AHS. I have found that their competitors are much cheaper both annually and on service calls and have better reviews. If you are considering AHS go another direction you will be glad you did.

Updated on April 14, 2015: I have already written a review so this is a follow up. After the contractor sent the part for refrigerator that needed to be ordered to American Home Shield, American Home Shield did not order it for what ever reason and conveniently have no record of the request for the part, (although I have confirmed with the contractor that American Home Shield had been informed days ago).

I have contacted American Home Shield almost daily who keeps pointing the finger at the contractor but never followed up with them even though the work order is over 2 weeks old and no progress has been made. Not to mention the part costs $9.95 and I can get it 1 day shipping from Amazon. But on principal I pay American Home Shield over $700 dollars per year for over 7 years now I will not stop until they do their job. One more thing I would like to mention is after my first post on consumer affairs American Hone Shield replied and said a customer service manager would be calling me right away to straighten out the problem. The man who came out was so knowledgeable and helped me on a few things that he saw could be potential dangers and then he didn't say "Oh, well, we're going to fix this." He said, "What you can do is have your friend do this." And he said, "Make sure you keep the doors of your filters closed. It could cause a potential fire..." He checked everything. I highly recommend them.

Our Air Conditioner wasn't cooling, so we called for service on Thursday. They only work with 1 vendor (in a large city), and the service man was not available until Monday. We are told that this is within 48 hours since the weekend doesn't count. Since we were going on vacation on Saturday, we called and asked if there was someone else we could use. The answer was no, and we were told to take it or leave it. During the hour we were on hold, we googled the vendor and found that he had lost his BBB accreditation due to complaints. We asked to speak to a supervisor and got hung up on. Called back and again asked for a supervisor to discuss refunding our entire account and were told that we would be contacted within 72 hours. HORRIBLE company!

I have a warranty from American Home Shield that guarantees 24/7 service. At 3 am this morning, I woke up in my home, freezing. The temp in my home was 48 degrees F. I called American Shield and spoke with a gentleman, who gave me the phone number of the company that would come to my home. (OAS). When I called this number, I got a voicemail that said to leave a message. I finally got a call from OAS at 7 am and the contractor arrived at 10am. THIS IS NOT WHAT I CALL 24/7 SERVICE! Had it been the dead of winter, my pipes would have frozen and broken long before OAS arrived. I do not blame OAS. I blame American Home Shield for guaranteeing 24/7 service and contracting with a company that does not have 24/7 service. I am very dissatisfied with the response to my emergency!

4/9/15 12:51 - I am going to do a real time experience with AHS; might be good or it might be bad. Today is 4/9/15 at 12:30 PM. I just called AHS to request service on two units that were repaired last summer. I requested a specific repair technician that I have had good results with in the past. Was informed that someone else had to make the repairs but I told them that I only wanted Climate Makers (JT Business group). The operator quickly arranged it. Climate Makers is on their approved list of contractors.

I am writing this real time report because of the terrible experience last summer having two HVAC units repaired. It took about 4 months in the heat of the summer to finally repair the units. The first contractor never finished the job. The second put in the wrong size air handler, a 3 ton instead of a 5. The third contractor, Climate Makers, finally installed the system correctly. I must have made 50 or more calls to AHS over this issue before it was resolved. Also, don't hesitate to ask for AHS customer affairs for help (if you are having trouble), because the operators will just keep saying "I am sorry you are having trouble". Even after my horrible experience last year, I still recommend AHS to my customers because I think they are the best of the group of home warranty providers; they just need to work on follow up and customer satisfaction.

So I scheduled for the following week. The service guy came out and saw what needed to be done to fix dishwasher. He ordered the parts and had them sent to my house. We scheduled an appointment for him to come back to install the new parts a week later. The day of the appointment came and went, he never showed up. I called AHS to find out what the problem was, they said "oh that appointment was cancelled." I said "the appointment cancelled but no one ever called me to let me know?" This is RIDICULOUS!! I've been a customer for two years and have had a passable experience in my few other minor service requests up until the last three weeks when my refrigerator broke. Since then it has been a complete run around. Despite knowing the type of refrigerator they sent an unqualified technician out the first time. He said he needed to order parts, but then 3 or 4 days later called to say he wasn't licensed to fix it.

On to technician number 2. He came out, thought it was likely one problem then finally determined on the third visit that the problem wasn't fixable as it was a leak in the refrigerator wall. Then it turned into a three ring circus of no accountability and miscommunication. They created hoop after hoop that had to be jumped through with reports, requiring the tech to come out for photos and some other seemingly useless confirmation that is was still broken. They've claimed not to get the technicians reports and then claimed the 2nd technician wasn't qualified to do the work and that the service company recommended someone else come out to take a look.

I immediately followed up with the service company and was told this was not true. After several contentious blood boiling calls they finally relented on sending out another service company, but of course had to send the case back to another department for review. The customer service people you can get on the phone are not empowered to actually solve a problem and the issue at hand is consistently in someone else's court. Countless phone calls, crazy amounts of hold time, no results and worst of all no refrigerator. Easily the worst customer service I've experienced.

After three weeks it was suggested to me to contact the manufacturer because they might take care of the problem. Really, then what did I pay you for? The refrigerator is out of warranty from the manufacturer and AHS is seemingly attempting to skirt their contractual obligation to replace my appliance. I'm probably having one of those nightmare scenarios, but these situations are what you're trying to cover yourself against and it hasn't been worth the headache.

On 4/2 at 3:52 (MST) I called AHS to enter a service request for a home in IL. I was given a dispatch number as well as the name of the vendor for my plumbing request. That information was also sent to me via e-mail from AHS. As instructed, I tried to place a call to the vendor but was sent to voice mail where I left a message. Fast forward to 4/6, I am still waiting to hear from the vendor after numerous attempts to call them. No one ever answers the phone (even during supposed business hours) at Triple HHH Plumbing in Litchfield, IL. Customer service at AHS also put in a call at my request. No response. My latest call to AHS ended with a customer service representative telling me that there are no other vendors in my area and that there is nothing they can do. WHAT???

It is unclear to me. Do I wait forever for a call that will never come from this MIA plumbing company? Why won't AHS contact a local plumber or have me contact a local plumber and reimburse me, under AHS warranty conditions, for their services. Seriously, the call ended with a "so sorry, nothing we can do" resolution. What do I do now? I am clearly out for my yearly warranty fee and the "commitment for service within 48 hrs." is not only a "not happening" but a smokescreen for a company that does not fulfill the service language in its contract. I honestly feel I am being scammed. A shame since this was my first contact with the company for a service request. By the way.... After waiting in excess of 10 minutes each call attempt to speak to a AHS representative, it took only one ring for an AHS agent to answer to sell a new policy when I tried that number out of curiosity.

We have tried to correct with their customer service staff but after dozens of hours on the phone over months... we finally cancelled the service we have had for over 30 years. We have paid them well over $30,000 in that time and they lost a customer over $75. We should have cancelled years ago as they continued to raise their prices for both the monthly cost and deductible charges for each event. But the worst of it, is the lack of a system that values a customer's time and proper training to ensure that customer service staff does just that..."customer service."

It does make a difference on who gets that job. Sometimes if something goes wrong with a house, Contractor X will come out and he's not as good as Contractor Y and that's the only variation. Their service is excellent but it's a matter of who comes out and does the work where we sometimes see differences.

My 17 old AC required condenser replacement plus ALL Freon. 3 other companies recommended replacement due to the system is no longer compliant with federal regulations. AHS refused to replace and would only pay $600 toward the $2000 repair as they only cover $10 of Freon. The AC vendor they sent, tried to sell me a bottom of the barrel replacement system, even refusing to tell me the brand of equipment. The second people came out and said what their cost would be, but they said they wouldn't do the work because they were too backed up and it was just too much work for them to take on.

The contractor was rude and acted as if I was doing him a disservice by contacting him and informed me that he "would try" to squeeze me in for a visit. I immediately contacted AHS again and asked if they could transfer me to another contractor [which they did]

**Sidebar: I had a previous experience last year with AHS involving my furnace repair. The contractor that was chosen for me showed up at my home inebriated. I contacted AHS to complain and they sent out another contractor the following day. So I'm very leery of their choices from my past experiences. [End]

On Wednesday 4/1/15, a plumbing contractor ** of Rod Plumbing of Philadelphia, PA showed up to "diagnose" my hot water heater. He showed up @ 10:40 am and left @ 10:47 am. He did not do anything but look at it and diagnosed a bad expansion tank. I tried to ask questions about what would cause that and he "fast-talked" me that it could be corrosion around the top or inside the tank, but the tank is bad. I then asked him, "What happens now?" He gave the impression that AHS would not honor this repair because I'm going to make sure that my diagnosis is a bad expansion tank. He was more concerned with me writing out the $75.00 check than answering my questions. All of this happened in 7 minutes. Before he left, he stated that I should receive a call this afternoon from AHS.

At about 4:30 pm that afternoon, I received a call from AHS informing me that my repair claim was denied because of "Secondary Damage" caused by a failed expansion tank. I immediately ask to speak to a supervisor that started a 24 hour wait [through 4 phone calls by me] for a response. On Thursday 4/2/15, totally frustrated and tired of me and my family taking cold showers, I contacted an area licensed plumber who ordered and installed the heater for me today [Fri. 4/3/15].

As he was prepping the old heater for removal, I asked him to examine it and give me his professional opinion of why it failed. He opened the element panel and took out the bottom element and showed me a significant amount of white, gravel-type dirt, and informed me that the water heater was corroded. He asked if I noticed any decrease in water temperature lately. I informed him that we did. The hot water would run out within 5 minutes while taking a shower and this has been going on since January. He stated that the problem could have started by a number of things inside the tank including bad thermostat, and elements, and that the corrosion/sediment exasperated the problem.

I thanked him after the job and paid him $832.00 for parts, labor, permits. I will not renew my contract with American Home Shield when it ends in July 2015 and I will advise, family, friends, and constituents to avoid at all cost. This is not good business and I honestly believe that AHS encourages their contractors to find anything other than the truth to deny their paying, contracted customers' repair or replacement of damaged items. One last note: The contractor [Rod Plumbing] spent no time in cashing my check. It was deposited on Wed. 4/1/15. I guess that was the reason he left my home so quickly. He went right to the bank. A Scam if I ever saw one.

The service has been great. We called them three or four different times and they've done everything really good. It was for the oven last time. The guy they sent out was great. He’s been out twice for two different things and I hope they send him every time because he's outstanding.

We had a very good experience with American Home Shield. We were having a leak in the tub which went on for three days before I called. By the time the contractor got here it was about the sixth day, it stopped but I had waited since he wasn't coming until it was Monday or Tuesday. It had stopped and we told him it stopped, but he said it will start again so he ordered a part.

I had to call Sears this morning because I noticed the receipt I signed where we paid the $75 said **. And **, she doesn't have anything with Home Shield. She's my son's wife, and I don't know how her name got on there but they used to live here years ago. She does not have the same washer that I have so I was worried that they'd order or bring the wrong part. That's why I called this morning and made sure they had my name on the order.

My pool pump was leaking and I could visually see it. I called American Home Shield on Friday and they came today and fixed it. My experience was business-like. I went online, logged in, submitted the request and got a confirmation and a call from the pool company. They scheduled the appointment for today. They came out and fixed it and I'm very satisfied. The repair has only been for three hours, but the performance has been perfect. In the recent past I have had needed some help on my pool and they have assigned We Fix Ugly Pools, and I commend that company and their employees because everyone they sent has been very professional and helpful to me. I'm very pleased and satisfied.

I did two claims with American Home Shield at almost the same time -- for a garage door opener and for the toilet. When they issued the claim, the experience was pretty quick. I got good turnaround and it was satisfactory. I think the repairs they did were great. I didn't have any issues regarding it. As far as the service is concerned, I'm glad that I did do it and so I would recommend it.

The only thing is that I was calling back to get a follow-up on some of the service that I received, like what I had paid for, because I had three homes that I was insuring, and I didn't get any tax information, like the amounts of what I was paying. I didn't have a record of that so it would have been beneficial to have that information. I recently tried to call back to get that information, and I have yet to get that information. Hopefully, I'll receive this information and can use it for tax purposes for my rental properties.
