I bought a slightly larger than needed Trane to replace another A/C heat unit. For the following three years, I was unable to switch from A/c to heating and had to have a technician come out to crawl up into the attic and manually make the switch twice a year. Finally, I got an independent (non-Trane) A/C man come out and he spent considerable time adapting the unit so I could switch from A/C to heat. The Trane was a costly mistake.

American Std 7 yrs old. 5 ton 20 seer dual compressor system with Digital Thermostat. When it works it is great and saves a lot of money on energy use. However, I have had several breakdowns in the past years. It's a good thing I took the extended warranty which covers everything thru 2022.

I own my own home now for 20 yrs. The builder's a/c was not to my liking, to many breakdowns, so I had a Trane installed. I now have it over 10 yrs and have not had one service call except for the yearly maintenance service to keep it running at maximum precision. The outside unit surprisingly, runs quietly, even after 10 1/2 yrs. If and when I have to replace my present A/C, I would definitely get a Trane a/c again.

I have purchased several TRANE HVAC units over the years, as have my family. I have 2 new units 2.5 years old, in March, I was told the evaporator coil was broken and all the refrigerant had leaked out. I have maintained my units as recommended, even bought new Freon lines to avoid the whole "leak" scandal. TRANE did replace the part and paid 1/2 of the labor which was $1200. A month later, 2 capacitor motors are broken--on these 2.5 year old units. Customer service staff are robots that keep repeating they will not honor labor assistance but one time, they have no desire to discuss doing right by the customer nor will they allow you to speak to anyone in upper management that may actually care. NEVER BUYING A TRANE AGAIN.

Just had a Trane air conditioner installed a few weeks ago. Trane helped the installer figure out how to use the existing pipe connections to connect to now different sized couplings. If this was not possible a whole wall in my downstairs would have had to be taken down to change the pipes. Air conditioner is working great and much quieter than the old one.

I have owned a 31/2 Ton Trane over/under package heat pump since June 2011 and it has performed faithfully without the need for service. My electric bill is reasonable too. I have maintained the system by keeping the filter clean (permanent filter) and flushing the evaporator and condenser coils. In South Florida, when I needed heat it did the job.

My home had a 35 year old Trane Heater. We had real high winds and top of exhaust blew off roof. HVAC company came out to replace and told me my system was so old needed to be replaced, it wasn’t as quiet as it should have been. Pilot light went out. Called another HVAC company who had same spill. Heater replaced and Now I know I was had. That 35 year old TRANE wasn’t as loud as the new unit, heated the house (2story) much faster AND my gas bill was MUCH less. I fell for the scam, thought I would have a more efficient unit for less money. The Trane is worth every penny and then some.

We bought a BIG 5000 sq. ft. 5 br/6 1/2 bath house in foreclosure to renovate. We put 4 brand new, high-efficiency Trane central a/c units because we'd always heard Trane was the best and that's what we wanted: pay a bit more than the rest upfront, but get the Best so you wouldn't have to worry as much in the long run... Apparently with the new high-efficiency units, it doesn't quite work that way... We had the house 9 yrs: for the 1st 7 yrs, there literally was not any 6-month period that 1 of the units did not require significant repair service; sure the parts were covered, but not the service calls - it cost us a LOT of extra money.
There was a BIG lot next door and a brand new house was built while we lived there. The new owner put in all new Trane units. For the 1st year or 2, there was an a/c service company at that house almost constantly: he and I used to text back and forth rolling our eyes and shaking our heads at whose Trane system was the crappiest. All the service technicians concurred that Trane USED to be the hands-down best, but that things had changed at the top and they were now quite mediocre.

Trane XR15. Terrible Unit. My unit was installed in August of 2018 - biggest mistake I have ever made with a capital purchase. I bought the filtration system for $1500 and that has never worked. I had to buy 6 house air cleaners. I tried to return the unit after 1 year because it had NO dust whatsoever on it but they refused. The heating works just fine. The a/c is a constant nightmare. It just never cools except at night when the temperature goes down. I am out $10,000 and I am going to have to replace this unit because it is absolute junk. I keep having repair come out who find nothing wrong with the unit. So they have disconnected the $1500 air filtration system to see if this will help with cooling the air. I think I am going to call a couple of attorneys and see if they can help me to get a new unit ---- not from Trane but make Trane pay.

We purchased this Trane about three years ago and very happy with it so far, it cools, almost too cool sometimes and I love the warmth in the winter. The installers put this on the roof so it is out of the way so no one will trip over it going around the house. I have had no issues with it at all. When this was put in the installers had to put in vents in the ceiling which makes a nice cool house, we only had floor vents before; we had a furnace and window coolers and this took care of both items. Because of this purchase we purchased new windows, nice additions to an old house.

In April of 2017 we bought a new Trane heat pump. In early December of 2017 we found out the reversing valve was defective and that was why we had no heat. We asked Trane to replace the unit because we felt it was defective from the factory and they refused. They covered the cost of the part but we had to pay $860 in service charges to have it installed.
In June of 2018 we spent another $220 having a fan capacitor replaced. We contacted Trane Consumer Relations and this time they offered to cover part of the labor charges with the condition that that would not be liable for any future charges arising from defects. We knew the equipment had a history of problems and turned down their offer.
Now in May of 2020 we are looking at another $800 in service charges to replace a defective and leaking cooling coil. Trane Consumer Relations has refused to help in any way. They told us to go through the service company we are using and have them go to the local distributor. In addition to refusing to do anything to help the supervisor in Consumer Relations was evasive when asked simple questions and refused to answer some questions.

My first 3-Ton Trane 18XL system installed in December of 2004 lasted until May of 2018. I live on an island and so my condensers are exposed to harsh conditions, even so my old system never stopped until the condenser coil sprung a leak on a copper to aluminum factory swaged joint. I replaced the system with a new XL 18i condenser and a TAM9 air handler (AHU). This new AHU lasted from May 2018 to December 2018 having developed a leak on a factory welded u-joint.
My dealer in Miami was kind enough to provide a new coil under warranty but Trane would not pay for the shipping and wanted me to send back the defective coil back at my cost. The new AHU coil installed in late March 2018 and lasted until late May 2020 and failed the same way as the first. My dealer was swift in getting me a warranty replacement again but said Trane offered no comment about why the same failure happened. My dealer also noted several other failures of the same nature on AHU coils he supplied over the past year. This is very concerning to me as my previous Trane units seemed unstoppable. Now I think it is time for Trane to change its slogan to "Trane stops every year". I'll be looking for another brand if this one fails within the warranty period.

I find it hard to read all these negative reviews about Trane. I am Canadian and sell and install Trane furnace's, A/C, Heat pumps and air handlers since 1991 with very little issues at all. I sell a 10 year parts and labour program with every piece of equipment just to make our customers more comfortable with the equipment and if it is required it protects them from any charges for 10 years. I am thinking that the installs that I am reading about are not done to manufacturer's specification which is very important to follow or the equipment will not work properly and or the installers are not properly trained or qualified. There are contractors here also that are not qualified and only care about getting your money, Trane will take away your dealership if you have continuous install problems.
I send my technicians to to training offered by Trane so that they are sure about what they are doing and to ask any questions that they have. Manufacturer's warranty is 5 years on parts for unregistered equipment and 10 years if you register it, I register all our equipment because homeowners will put it off then forget to do it. Some contractors will also charge you for parts that are under warranty and then collect the warranty part from Trane, so shame on you for not paying attention to your purchase.
I will always stand behind Trane equipment over any other brand. If I do have any problems with the equipment, parts are easily available and are covered under warranty with no issues. As for technical support sometimes it is hard to get through but I always get a reply from them and they are very helpful and solve any problems that we have. I encourage you to contact Trane and plead your case if your contractor will not help you. I will always go to bat for my customer and get what they deserve, a awesome piece of equipment, comfort and peace of mind.

In April 2015 we purchased what we believed to be a quality XV20i “TruComfort System”. We spent $17,500. From the beginning, our electric bills increased during times when temperatures are below freezing. We have had sleepless nights due to the loud compressor noise and the system runs 24 hours a day at times. The coils ice up so badly that the ice build up extends out of the side vents and into the fan compartment. We have to resort to our emergency heat unit as the fan blades hit the ice and cannot function. We wait until the unit thaws out with above freezing temps.
Our HVAC company has been out multiple times and says all sensor readings are normal and basically don’t know how to fix our problem. Again we have paid for multiple service calls, the most recent $294 with no resolution. Unlike others, I have not attempted to call Trane, as it seems impossible to get help. Our local dealer promises to take care of us, but my faith is dwindling. We work hard for our dollars just like the rest, and it is very frustrating to spend this kind of money on a product that does not live up to its name. It is like robbery.

The Trane warranty covers parts, but not the ongoing expense of diagnosing what is wrong with the unit. I have spent over $3,000 on labor for this unit (about 10 service calls) and refuse to spend another $800 to change out a leaking compressor coil. I have tried to get Trane's help in paying for the labor and/or changing out this unit, but their warranty makes it impossible to accomplish this. We bought a Trane heatpump/a/c unit in January of 2019. A valve in the unit failed in less than a year. Although the specific valve was covered under their limited warranty, the parts that are associated with the repair for this specific problem weren't covered. Even though our installer did not bill up for labor, we still had a bill of $1033 for a unit less than a year old! As it turns out, there was a class action lawsuit over that same valve for units purchased from 2014-2018. Apparently, they haven't solved the valve problem, but cleverly, specifically now list those very parts as excluded under the warranty. I don’t know if it’s the unit or if it’s the thermostats. And to be able to contact Trane I have found is virtually impossible to get them to ask them what is wrong with our unit It takes. If they send out don’t know whether to scratch the butt or their head with this unit. For the price that I paid for I do expect it to work.

I cannot recommend purchasing a Trane air conditioner. I've had problems with my Trane air conditioner since my purchase. The air handler was full of mold after the first month of service and did not pass City inspection. The air handler had to be replaced in order to pass City inspection. A fluorescent bulb had to be added to the air conditioner which is not part of the engineering design to prevent mold. The main power switch corroded after the first year in service. Then the thermostat went bad. Trane customer service does everything possible not to warranty their parts. Trane's customer service definitely does not put its customers first, and they are extremely difficult to deal with. The experience is beyond upsetting. I would not recommend anyone to purchase a Trane air conditioner. Trane makes a poor quality air conditioner and the value and reliability is not there for its price.

NOPE, do not think now after paying $300 in labor for a heating system only used 2X. I'm very surprised on the failure rate of limit switches and also failure of the heating element after 2x uses. Sounds like supplier issues and cheap components. I would like to speak w/ Trane and really hear their thoughts after reading other reviews, Trane reliability may be an issue. Also I have learned from multiple installers around Texas that they are replacing these Trane coils everyday. They are clearly having internal quality control issues and are therefore refusing to take ownership. Plus dealing with their customer service is a joke. They repeatedly tell you that they do not provide warranty and tell you straight up they do not have what you sent them, even though you have the email to prove you sent it. Then they try to deflect the conversation to another department. My installer closed their doors and I had no support whatsoever from Trane.
They should be involved in a class action suit for the Thousands of coils that unsuspecting customers are having to pay out of pocket when Trane should be the one paying for it. The installers who did the original installation commented that Trane had wiring issues with heat pumps late in 2014, and changed how it was connected at the unit. In fact this installer had trouble getting the replacement heat pump to function correctly, and had to call the Trane reps, and they walked him through the new method of wiring the pump. It was changed because it was causing the pump to cycle too often, and led to early failure. Hum...sounds like my pump. Installer said Trane will do nothing for you. In April 2007 I purchased a Trane residential HVAC system for $8500 from Home Depot. The authorized Trane installer at that time was McCarthy Services. They installed the system and “completed” the install on April 9, 2007. I was given a certificate of warranty by McCarthy that covered from April 9, 2007 to April 9, 2017. Several months later I was looking for the inspection certificate from the county and found that there was not one in my paperwork. I contacted the county to get a copy. They did not find a record of a permit issued for the installation of my HVAC system.
I contacted McCarthy and informed them that they did not get a permit for the install and did not have a county inspection. McCarthy was issued a permit on May 13, 2008 and had the inspector come out. The install failed inspection. They made some changes to the system, and again it failed. Finally, on July 17, 2008, the install passed inspection by the county. On July 1, 2017, the AC failed. A tech looked at it and said the compressor had failed and needed to be replaced, and that the coil also needed to be replaced as the new compressors use a different kind of freon and are not compatible with that coil. The cost was to be $5975.
I called Trane and explained that the original installation did not pass inspection until July 17, 2008 so my 10-year warranty should go from July 17, 2008 to July 17, 2018 and this compressor/coil replacement should be covered by the warranty. They told me to take a hike. I paid for the install out of pocket and filed a complaint with Trane. The Trane customer service person said they could not do anything. I escalated it and that person basically told me to stick it.
I am a home inspector. We used to rate Trane and Carrier as two of the best HVAC systems. We typically tell our customers that any major appliance that is 10 years old could be ready for a replacement in the near future so they should start planning. I have seen AC units that are 20 years old still running fine. More and more we are hearing horror stories about Trane HVAC systems. I no longer recommend Trane to anyone and now suggest Carrier.
Trane seems to have abandoned their commitment to quality and their customer service sucks. I can attest to both. It seems that the one thing that can easily stop a Trane is a few years. So, I decided to file a suit against Trane in the hope that they would at least negotiate some partial payment to me for this replacement (which was a Trane only because if it was a Carrier I would have no chance at any reimbursement). I filed suit in small claims court in my county. I heard nothing from Trane and expected them to be a no-show on the day of court. Instead, they sent a hot-shot lawyer from Washington DC to fight me.
The case was moved to regular court and a trial date was set. I had to file a document called a Bill of Particulars stating my complaint. Their hot-shot lawyer filed a 10-page reply referencing a whole bunch of cases and provided 11 reasons why I should not get my money. I am certain that this has cost Trane more than the $5000 I was looking for. This attorney did not even ask me if I was willing to take some other amount to make me happy and drop the case. They are clearly really serious about not giving a crap about their customer. Please, don’t ever buy a Trane.

If your builder installed a Trane system, after you purchased your house, besides everything you were working at, you need remember to call Trane to register your AC system. I was skeptical, but didn’t debate. 6 months later the union is leaking again and another service call was made. This time I requested that a new line be installed without a union. My home in SW Florida was built in 1967. Any HVAC system will have a challenge keeping up with the humidity and high temps here. My Trane AC system is 6 years old. It performs pretty well for the most part. I use cheap filters that allow the system breath and I replace them every month. Don’t waste money on expensive filters unless you have serious allergies. Thick filters make the AC work harder and will wear out the equipment.
General maintenance is easy and I am diligent about keeping the outside unit clean. I use a spray bottle with watered down Dawn dish soap and a garden hose. I regularly clear the drain pipe with my shop vac. I had a routine check-up recently from my home maintenance provider (HomeTech - I highly recommend) and asked the tech why cold air is blowing out of the crevices around the maintenance doors and bolts on my air handler. Plain and simple, it is a design flaw. He said he sees it all the time on Trane units.
I called Trane to find out if there was a replacement part for the casing or a recommended remedy. It was a runaround... All they would tell me is to call my dealer to evaluate the problem. That would cost me $119 for somebody to come out and say, “yep, there’s cold air leaking from the air handler into your garage. I'll call Trane and get back to you.”
Parts are covered, but there was no evidence of parts available. Please! My solution was Gorilla tape and bubble wrap to cut down the loss of cold air. It worked, but it really shouldn’t be so difficult to get a straight answer and a fair solution. I paid a lot of money for my AC system. I didn’t expect to be patching it myself. There is a lot of room for improvement.

When I called that dealer & explained our situation, the owner told me he was not interested, & literally hung up the phone on me. I moved to Florida in 2004. The builder used a TRANE Heat Pump. The unit worked well for 14 years. So when it came time to replace the unit I chose a new TRANE Heat Pump. It was installed on April 17th, 2018. In June of 2019 the Evaporator Coil developed a leak. An Evaporator Coil failure in 14 months is not normal. Under the basic warranty TRANE supplied a replacement part. However labor cost, incidentals, and refrigerant are not covered. The installation cost to repair the unit was $1139. I contacted their customer service and indicated my displeasure with the unit. I also indicated for an Evaporator Coil to fail so early in its service meant it did not meet specifications and was defective from day one.
TRANE offered to pay $500 of the cost to repair. However to receive the $500 I would have to sign a release. The release, released TRANE from any more liability for the unit. It also was a nondisclosure agreement. I was not to discuss any of the details of the settlement under penalty of TRANE suing me for damages. This would also have prohibited me from joining any kind of class action. The Release even had language that cancelled out California Laws on a general release. I live in Florida, why am I releasing them from a California Law.
I refused to sign. At which time TRANE indicated if I did not sign this release, they would not provide any funds for the repair. The customer service agent then closed my ticket concerning the matter. So how many of these infantile failures have occurred on TRANE Evaporator Coils? If I accepted money toward the repair TRANE was making sure I could not talk about the failure. So this is my last TRANE. I will also not buy any American Standard equipment as both of these companies are owned by Ingersoll Rand.

My wife and I bought a house a little more than a year ago with a 5 year old Trane TAM7, which at first was a major selling point. In the year we have had it the outside unit motor failed and the entire inside unit is currently being gutted and replace from a defective motherboard that seems to have affected all the other parts. Trane techs at the Trane supply in Orlando have repeatedly given false information on the unit's problem and false fixes that have cost us and our techs working on the almost 24 hours of repairs and it is still not fixed. It has been 6 days since our unit stopped working and Trane tells us now it will be another 5 days until another part can be delivered and ready. Trane has been unhelpful and inconsiderate of the emergency of not having air conditioning in Florida when the heat index is over 100 and have done nothing but promise results from its equipment and parts which are not being met.
This product is quoted as "reliable". I believe if the unit hasn't worked properly for more than 5 months at a time without an issue occurring and HVAC techs needing to come and repair the unit then it is not reliable and should not be marketed as such. We have 8 pets that live with us and being without a air conditioning unit in the central Florida area can have negative effects on their health or possibly be worse. I believe Trane is responsible and is being negligent to their products and consumers that ultimately suffer from this negligence that Trane is refusing to be accountable for.

Trane XB14 Weathertron. I purchased a brand new Trane 3T-15 Seer Air Conditioning/Heat Pump Unit from a reputable company who recommended this unit and completed the install May 2011. I've been with this A/C company since I moved to Florida 18 years ago, so I trusted their recommendation. I was told Trane was the top of the line and worth paying more to have the best, peace of mind, 10 year warranty if registered within 60 days, etc. It's been nothing but a "costly" nightmare once the 5 year mark was reached and the 10 year warranty ended up NOT being what was sold to me. Even though the company has been good about some of the items that were supposed to be 10 years, they have haggled with me and TRANE over what is actually covered on the warranty and the period of time. CRAZY! CRAZY!
With this major purchase, you would expect to get more than 5 years out of a system without spending additional major $$$. The following are my repairs/replacements since May 2016 to date: EFC control board, capacitor, condenser coil (plus R410 to replace what was lost), another trip to fix a R410 leak as a result of when the condenser coil was replaced, replaced entire circuit board, new blower relay, and thermometer all within a 3 year period. Keep in mind, that not only do you pay for labor to install the warranted item, each visit is a service/diagnostics fee.
Today, my system runs constantly causing very high energy bills because the A/C simply can't keep up with the outside temps -- called for service and after diagnosing the units for 1.5 hours, they tell me they can't find anything wrong. The AC Guy told me that they just don't make Trane Units like they used to!! I'm very disappointed in Trane products, I wish I would have read these reviews before taking the recommendation of a company I trust, and certainly don't recommend purchasing a TRANE to anyone. Very Disappointed!

Trane used to be a good company until it was purchased by an acquisition merger company who now owns Trane, American Standard and Ingersoll Rand. Three companies that have been ruined by their parent company’s attempt to make a larger profit at the cost of the consumer. You still pay a premium but you know longer get a premium unit. YOU GET CRAP! They have sent their parts to be made in China and the quality control is awful. Their research and development might as will be nonexistent.
Three units and 49 attempted repairs. One unit 10 attempts the first year and Mitchell AC did not write anything up due to the warranty. He also did 7 more the next year without writing up anything. That was a mistake. As you can see I have 32 receipts only!! John ** the DALLAS service area supervisor was involved in all three units. He told Mitchell AC that the unit I purchased was the biggest piece of crap TRANE had ever made. They were never able to get the unit working properly and the communicator never worked. I had to keep my unit on emergency heat ever since I’ve had it as that’s the only way the heat would work. John said they would refund me but then reneged. The second unit Mitchell AC installed 7 the first year.
None was Mitchell AC fault and they tried hard to repair but units had manufacturing defects from the factory. Once they figured out that the one unit didn’t get seal correctly at the factory and moisture kept getting in and ruining components. Different company on the third one and same problem with seal and several other design flaws. If you want a unit with lots of problems then buy a TRANE WRECK. Remember you have been warned, run, don’t walk.

November 2017 blower motor replaced.
December 2017 evaporator coil replaced.
December 2017 circuit board replaced.
December 2017 thermostat replaced.
February 2018 thermostat replaced #3.
May 2019 evaporator coil replaced #3.
There is only one phone number to reach Trane and the people who answer are unable to assist you and you aren’t able to talk to supervisors or anyone in the “escalations Department.” I’ve spent hours on the phone trying to remedy this situation. In addition to hours and days spent waiting for repairmen and/or being without air conditioning in Florida and the high cost of repairs. Overall, it has been a very frustrating experience and I would strongly caution others against Trane products.

I would like to provide a very encouraging update. I met with the owner of the Heat & Air company who actually did the install. As of today I am a very satisfied customer, not necessarily of Trane Customer Service, but certainly the commitment on the part of this company to make it right. The biggest mistake I made was using the Trane Web Site and then thinking that Customer Relations actually meant helping the customer. The company the Trane Web Site recommended apparently was going to overcharge me.
Bottom line--I am actually sitting here almost ready to put a coat on for the first time in a long time--will change the setting!!! The heat was tested, and is now at 110 degrees. I also received a very detailed summary of the problems and resolution. Awesome!

I would implore, beg anyone reading this to never consider buying a Trane Air Conditioner or Furnace. After just getting off the phone with Trane "Lack Of" Customer Service, I want to make others aware. Suction King Valve was bad at install. Replaced the TXV. Suction Service Valve was bad 2 years later--needed to replace--no coolant.
I am honestly not sure what other problems may have existed from the beginning. Admittedly some of the problems may have been related to the install. I know I have basically had no air conditioning for three years--using two window units, and essentially limited, if any heat in the winter. I cannot keep paying $1339 every spring for 7 lbs of 410-A due to problems with Trane parts or equipment. Do not buy Trane!! To add insult to injury, the technician did the 6 month inspection of the unit 2 DAYS before the coil went completely bad and did not see the refrigerant was basically gone at that point. As others have stated, dealers do not stock parts, they have to get them from warehouses that may not be located near the dealer. This was only the coil, something that should be READILY available. The cost was astronomical--even though under warranty, the labor cost was basically 10% of the original purchase price of the unit. I will NEVER purchase a Trane unit again.

We installed an XL15 system in our home - heat pump, air handler, etc. near the end of 2011. 6 mos. after it was installed the fan motor on the air handler died. It took a week to obtain the replacement. Now, in May of 2019 we're dealing with the need for other parts for the air handler - a circuit board, valve, EVAP sensor and another sensor. Parts take much too long to be obtained. They say 3-5 business days, but we're already past 4 days and I don't expect to see them within 5. So, buyer beware that unless the part(s) you need are readily and locally available, you could have a problem. The risk is high and when we replace this system it will NOT be with a Trane system.

My disappointment is toward proprietary parts for replacement, which are several times as expensive as other brands for their replacement parts. Trane parts cost much more to replace; circuit board on outside unit, nearly $400; fan motor on outside unit nearly $1,300 plus labor to replace, compared to $150 for competitor's fan; reversing valve for outside unit nearly $800 plus over $400 labor. The slogan "hard to stop a Trane" applies only if you have unlimited resources for purchasing their expensive replacement parts for repairs, plus labor. The customer becomes "trapped" down the road with Trane's excessively expensive replacement parts.

I was shocked by all these major issues. Dealer just told me I was unlucky to get a bad system. I was asked to pay about $900 labor fee since only parts are under warranty. In addition, there could be other issues since testing could not be done without replacing the parts. So whole system is a junk.
I complained to dealer manager, then to Trane customer service, then escalated to supervisor. I sent them all the documents they asked for, but never heard from them. Hello, I recently purchased a TRANE heat pump unit (September 2018) Model numbers: Heat pump - 4TWV8036A1000BB. Air Handler - TAM9AOB3OV31DAA. Tstat - TCONT85OAC52UA. The unit worked as described with no problems until about a month ago. Then it started to malfunction. I contacted the installing dealer and they came out to find that mice had moved into the control unit area of the heat pump and chewed through several wires which made the unit malfunction.
I have lived in this house for the past 12 years and never had an issue with mice in my old unit. I purchase a TRANE and after 6 months of use I have to pay out $200.00 in repair bills due to mice. I did some research online and found out that this is a major problem with the type of heat pump I have because for 1 it has a heating unit in the control area which draw mice in the winter to find a warm place to live and 2 it appears that no effort was made by the product engineers to seal those areas up or to even put the wires in an enclosed unit, I was also informed by the technicians that did the repairs that this is a major issue and they see mice doing damage to units all the time.
I am very disappointed in this product and wonder how much it is going to cost me down the road for repairs as I can't keep a daily watch on the unit and will not know if mice are chewing up the wires at any given time. I would suggest that TRANE take a better look at the design of the unit and come up with a way to better protect the control area and wires and if nothing else recommend that dealers who install the unit let the customer know that mice like the warm place in the unit and might chew it up costing major repairs and money to fix.
I would not recommend the TRANE heat pump to anyone because of this issue and will not purchase any type of TRANE product in the future. The other issue is with the thermostat - model 850. Seems that it has an issue with heat buildup in the display and causes the unit to display a higher temp than the set point. Had to have the installing dealer come out after the heating season started to adjust the calibration set point for the indoor temp to make the unit function showing the displayed temp and the actual room temp the same. This seems to me to be another design flaw which when I did some research online TRANE customers are having the same issues. Very disappointed in my purchase to say the least.

The part was well over 1000 dollars and the tech was tight-lipped when I asked if he did a lot of them. The 5th year the evaporator coil unit failed AGAIN and I had to run on emergency (gas only) heat for a month. The tech told me that his company no longer sells Trane units. He recommended Bryant. My neighbor had the same unit and after replacing her compressor TWICE, she upgraded her unit to the XL18i. I am in the 7th year of my warranty. I lived there for 10 years and never had an issue with the AC. The house I live in also had a cheap AC (where the new Trane system is now installed) and it didn't start giving me trouble after 12 years. And here I am with a brand new top of the line 'nothing stops a Trane' system and less than 2 years after installation I'm having to fork out money for repairs.

Bought a new house in June 2017 and saw that it had a Trane HVAC unit with a heat pump. I was thinking it would be like the Trane unit my dad bought 30 years ago that is still running, but it wasn't. AC worked fine from June till November when it started getting cold. Turned the heat on and the house actually got colder from the air coming out. Called the builder and filed a warranty claim. The HVAC installation company Carolina Comfort wanted to leave me without heat for 2 weeks. I called my realtor who got the builder involved and 5 days later they had the new valve to food it. Called the dealer and Trane telling them this was ridiculous and they needed to replace the unit since it was overheated from the bad valve. They said not going to happen.
Fast forward to December 2018, as it got cold again and I turn the heat on it worked for one day then blew cold air cooling our house instead of heating it before I shut it off. Called Carolina comfort again and they looked at it and said the compressor failed from running last year with a bad TXV. Called Trane again and they said it's fixed, that's all they are going to do. I explained that I am not comfortable with this unit being 0 for 2 in 18 months during heat season. They said it is what it is. Next time I'll buy a carrier Lenox or even a Goodman before I ever buy a Trane unit. And if I buy a house with a Trane unit already there, I'm going to get a warranty to plan on replacing that trash. Done with buying Trane.

I purchased a new A/C unit in September of 2018. I have only had the unit for 3 months. Within 3 months I have had to have the coils replaced twice, but that is not the reason for the bad review. The Trane air conditioners are EXTREMELY LOUD! I have to turn my T.V. volume up while the air handler is running. I recently turned on the heat. Each time the heat turns on the unit makes a very loud click. I was told by the repair guy that the clicking is the relay in the heater. I did not have any of these problems with my Carrier and Rheem units. It is very hard to get a good night's sleep with this loud Trane air conditioner. I feel like I wasted $5K!

I installed a Trane residential HVAC system in my home in 2012 and strongly encourage anyone looking to replace their home HVAC system to look anywhere else but at Trane. The system has broken down a number of times and recently the igniter switch has burned out three time in the past month. The installer cannot find the reason and now I am told that I have to replace a board with a cost in excess of $1,000. This is after replacing the igniter switch twice at a cost or $200 per switch. I called Trane and all they could tell me was that I am out of the warranty period. Clearly Trane does not stand behind their products. Pick another manufacturer and avoid Trane.

I recently moved into my custom built home. During the planning phase I requested TRANE equipment due to prior good experiences. Upon completion I had no idea that the TRANE equipment had to be registered 60 days after closing (I am sure it's stated in the fine print or piles of documents one receives when purchasing a new house). Minor mistake... WRONG! The difference is with a brand new home and brand new trane furnace/ac/coil equipment you lose 5-7 yrs of warranty on the equipment if you do not register in 60 days... NO EXCEPTIONS, NO OPTIONS, NO INTERMEDIARY SOLUTIONS. BASICALLY NO ONE THAT APPARENTLY REALLY CARES!
I strongly recommend using another company that is more transparent with their policies and has a real customer service department that is equipped to do the right thing when necessary! 10 year parts warranty if you register in 60 days! 5 & 3 year warranty if you don't... same new equipment, same new house but a rigid, ridiculous policy that none of their customer relations employees can even really defend. We've already had the furnace go down (23F outside) & now I learn about their policies & customer relations efforts. I'll never make this mistake again (Trane equipment).

I bought a Trane AC/Furnace and compressor in April 2016. In October 2018, the evaporator coil was leaking and not cooling my Houston home. I called the dealer that installed the system. They came right out. Told me that the coil needed to be replaced. They had to put 4 containers of coolant in until they could replace it. Bill was about $350. Was told that part was under warranty but labor not covered. The labor would cost about $700. WHAT!!! Coils should not go out so soon! Clearly, it was defective and I should NOT have to pay to have it replaced. Would never recommend a TRANE to anyone. Not even an enemy.

Before the installers left they brought it to our attention that the air conditioning unit was louder than it should be. They checked with their boss and he told us we could either get a new compressor or a whole new unit. We opted for the new unit. Been waiting three weeks got back to the company who installed Trane and they told us Trane will only replace the compressor not the whole unit. I contacted Trane and they said they would fix it not replace it. Apparently Trane has poor quality control of the products leaving their factory. Think twice before you buy a Trane.

After discussion, tech said Byrum h/A service manager told him they would waive all repair fees except for Trane's warranty fee of $50. And I told him I wasn't paying for a warranty fee of a defective part or possibly improper installation. Within 5 min all charges were waive and everything was going to be replaced at no charge. Researching I found that an additive needed to be added to properly lubricate the TXV and keep it from sticking which is a major cause of failure.

I recently built a home for my family in Miami, FL and decided to go with Trane as we were assured that while they were more expensive than the competition they are a better product and offer impeccable customer service. Nothing could be further from the truth. Our A/C system has broken down six (6) times since it was installed 9 months ago, the most recent one happening last Wednesday Sept 27, when the Air Handler motor and Harness simply died and need to be replaced by a new one.
We’ve been on the hunt for a new motor and not only can’t the local South Florida Distributor can’t seem to find one in the whole state, they need to request one from the factory, which can’t assure shipping of a new motor until Friday, October 5, this is more than 8 whole days after the A/C first broke down. We have gone ahead and gotten in touch with someone within Trane corporate for help expediting the shipment of the missing part and even with their involvement we haven’t been able to track down the part.
What’s worse is that there are several new, unsold A/C units similar to our waiting to be sold in Miami arase county and the manufacturer refuses to take the spare part from an unsold unit nor will they change the unit altogether, which I believe is warranted as my current one is obviously filthy since it died after only 9 months of use. In conclusion, don’t do business with this company. Not only will you end up spending a fortune for their product but their unit are faulty and if you ever needed a spare part, you can spend weeks without one.

Therefore, the air conditioning coils were not in use until that time. Our AC failed less than 5 years later and the cause was the air conditioning coils. Not only were we without air conditioning during a record heat wave, we had to pay nearly 1200 in repairs. I have had a very bad experience with the Customer Escalation Department at Trane. I've had to do this every year because it was not installed correctly, you have to have a 1/8 inch fall on the inside unit so it will drain properly. Takes about 2 hours to clean the unit and clean the fins on the squirrel cage. Messy job if you don't know what you're doing. Junk, very disappointed. Don't get one of these unless you like problems. I purchased and had a Trane 5 Ton XV20i Heat Pump installed along with a Matching TAM-9 Air Handler during April of 2018 here in Florida, which was a replacement for a nearly 20 year old 4 ton Carrier System. I am amazed at what a great choice my Trane System has turned out to be and my electric bill savings are already racking up at no less than $100 per month and during the peak months of Summer, I actually have saved in excess of $150 per month on my June and July bills, the latter of which I just received.
Of course my old Carrier system may not have even been equivalent to a 10 Seer system, so obviously any new system would be an improvement, but the Trane XV20i has far exceeded my expectations and it actually appears I probably will recover the entire cost during the next 12 years just from my electric cost savings, not to mention any repair bills my old system may have cost me. With a 10 year Trane warranty on parts plus the 12 year warranty on the compressor, only time will tell for sure, but so far, I'm sure glad I chose the Trane XV20i.
I also have the latest fancy state of the art matching Trane Thermostat too, where I can easily monitor not only the weather via WiFi, but I can also control my thermostat from my cell phone too if I want to. True to everything I heard, this XV20i really does do a great job keeping the indoor temperature steady. Not only that, but I can even select my indoor humidity level target and sure enough, the XV20i will usually keep both the temperature and humidity exactly where I have them both set. Apparently with the variable speeds, the system can adjust accordingly to accommodate a temperature setting with the desired humidity level too.
I'm of the opinion, that over sizing a heat pump is not as much of a concern anymore with these variable speed systems and it's nice to have the extra capacity available for the peak heat months too! Heck I set the summer humidity target to just 45% (my old system humidity ranged between 55-60%) and my Trane system keeps it perfect. Maybe even too perfect -lol, because I just raised the target humidity to 55% just to monitor what difference that will make, since 55% is probably sufficient for my needs and it seems that I may soon rack up some more savings too, because the system won't have to work just to keep the humidity at 45% since I don't really even it that low. I have no affiliation with Trane but I am a bonafide happy Trane customer! The Trane 5 ton XV20i system is a big unit (both indoor and out) but still nice looking equipment and I can barely hear it running even when I try to listen!

I purchased my home in May 2014 and had a Trane AC unit installed by a local company called Big Tex now Cool Atmosphere. The builder, Wilshire Homes, within the 1st year of install had the company come out to look at problems with the unit. I had a compressor replaced within the first year. They had to change the compressor in the unit and the TXV all between 2014-2015. I'm still not understanding how a compressor goes out on a new unit. In 2016 I have service done on this unit for various problems over 5 times. One of the main problems was the TXV again.
Fast forward to July 2018 my unit is not working. (Cool Atmosphere is no longer connected to Big Tex but same employees and owner.) My unit is not cooling. They come out and tell me it's the TXV so they replace it costing me $276 (labor). The unit stopped working 2 days later and the owner of Cool Atmosphere came out and cleaned the TXV and bypassed the pressure switch. I arrived home that night and found the unit was continuously running without reaching the temperature I preset on the thermostat. During the night the unit continued to run without cooling below 76 degrees. I turned the unit off so it did not freeze or break for running continuously. I woke to turn it back on the next morning and it began turning on and off every second again. Same problem. I am not sure why any parts on a new unit needed to be bypassed.
I contacted Trane as well as Cool Atmosphere. Trane sends a message to them informing them to put MJ-X Oil Additive in the compressor. They put the oil in the compressor then later telling me it's $175 for this oil additive because it's not covered under my warranty by Trane. This is a total rip off. I called Trane to find they did not cover the oil additive even though this is something that is needed for the unit to operate properly. This was also something that Trane just came out with because Cool Atmosphere was not aware the additive was needed in the compressor.
So as you can see I am out of money for these guys coming out multiple times to place bandages on my semi new unit that was installed in 2014. After looked at the other reviews it sounds as though Trane's 2014 units need a recall considering all the same part issue that have gone out during the first few years of ownership. This is not good customer service by either of these companies I have been dealing with. I would steer clear of either of these companies.

I called a different dealer, and he found the leak and has to replace the COIL for another $800 for labor, which is no longer under warranty. Also, in this same period of time, the entire duct system filled up with water from condensation and cost me another $1800 to repair and replace. I have since learned this is a common problem with these units. Trane offers no service help at all. They are impossible with which to get in touch. When we attempted to warranty the Trane ac/heat pump online we ran into nothing but issues, timeout error, technical errors and the system not recognizing our serial numbers. We tried to call the warranty department but after about 4 hrs on hold and listening the most horrific on hold music, we gave up and mailed in the warranty. Almost two years later the blower motor (this is the unit we almost never use) went bad in the upstairs zone system.
We were shocked to hear our unit was still under the dealer’s commercial 5 year warranty. I called Trane’s warranty department and waited almost 4 hr for someone to pick up. They simply told me the serial numbers on our units were invalid and hung up. I tried to check myself with the same results. I tried the next day and the serial numbers came back valid. I re-registered the units in our name, but still only a 5yr. warranty. I tried calling the warranty department and waited 2.5 hrs. before hanging up. I believe Trane is purposely making it difficult to register the warranty by making their website un-reliable and short staffing the warranty department so they can advertise a 10 year warranty and not actually deliver.

Purchased an American Standard (owned by Trane) HVAC in spring 2017. In spring 2018, the AC was not cold. Technician diagnosed the problem: leaking indoor coil. He replaced and recharged it, then told me that the $545 for labor/refrigerant was NOT covered under warranty - only parts are. When he sensed my outrage, he explained he was "on my side" and told me to call Trane Customer Service. I did - case #**. They explained the warranty to me (as if I needed that), and I made it clear that it IS A JOKE. How can a company stand by their product when they are asking consumers to incur cost for THEIR MISTAKES! When the supervisor realized I was not going to stop complaining (no yelling, no cursing), she asked if there was anything else she could help me with, to which I answered "you have not helped me at all," and then she hung up on me as I began my next sentence... DO NOT BUY TRANE/AMERICAN STANDARD!!!

Bought our Trane in August and the following May the entire compressor needed replaced. The unit didn't even run all winter. The compressor was covered by the warranty but... After paying thousands of dollars for a brand new unit I then had to pay an additional $521 to replace the "refrigerant" that is not covered by the 1 year warranty! The refrigerant leaked out because of their faulty unit. What a joke. Don't buy a Trane! I know I never will again.

I purchased (using a dealer) a 16 SEER American Standard, because of the reviews and because is part of Trane. 6 to 7 months after installation I had the first problem. The installer filled up with refrigerant, thinking that the ports were not tighten enough. 2 months after this event, again no cool air. Refill again. Third time after 1 month (end of summer time) we decided to change the handler coil under warranty. New coils, same story 7 months after installation. Refill, and again 2 months later. Third refill we decided to replace the coils for the second time (Nov 2017) when is cooler here in south Florida.
This time we did a pressure test before replacing thinking it’s the lines (which were not replaced with the units). Pressure test the coils, lines, outside coils and compressor, and again the issue was the handler coil. He tested the lines under pressure (a bit higher than the recommended testing pressure) for 1 week, not 1 PSI drop on the lines and outside unit). Now, end of May 2018, again no cold air (the temp started to go up in South Florida). The AC tech is coming in the following days to check. If it’s the third time when the handler coils go bad, I’m going crazy. What quality do American Standard have? How can it be so bad? And in 2 years, each coil is as bad as the original. No improvement? How can they afford to give you 1 coil each year under warranty? I don’t recommend either Trane or American Standard, as both have thousand of bad reviews.

I have been trying to get a warranty coil through Trane since they are the company that could not keep up with the manufacturer of evaporator coils and it has been going on 2 months trying to get my warranty coil. I do this work for a living. This is unacceptable to not take care of your customers. I go into people's homes every day and am asked multiple times a day what kind of system I would recommend. Trane would never be recommended from me. I will tell everyone do not purchase Trane. By far the worst company to deal with and they do not stand behind their products.

We purchased a "Beach" model 3-ton Trane since we are subject to salt spray. 10 years & 6 months later (6 months out of warranty), the unit does look like a brand new unit, no visible rust or corrosion. The "Trane Stopped!!" The unit started re-cycling more often than it had early on and then started re-cycling immediately. The technician, a Trane distributor, who installed the unit initially, came out with a "snifter" and found the "Aluminum Coil" to have several holes. The salt air took the coil out! WOULD NOT HAVE HAPPENED WITH COPPER!!! MY days of recommending a higher priced TRANE to friends or anyone are over!!! I called Trane Customer Service and they said they recorded my concerns and that was that! Oh Well, so long Trane!

2 years ago I bought a new Trane AC for my house in Florida which is only used for 6 months per year from my family. From beginning the unit was always dropping water much more than my old AC. The Trane dealer always tried to stop it but we must live with these problems. Now the dropping was so heavy that the water pan under the AC brokes by the weight of the water. After discussion with Trane the dealer changed last Friday the cooling coils with the result that now water runs twice time faster than before. At the moment I must clean the water pan all 3 hours. It is near a full time job. Normally we come from Germany to Florida for holidays. Now we come to control always a new AC. "It is not hard to stop a Trane (you can shut the power off), it is much more harder to live with a Trane". Trane seems to be a very poor company, the units seems not to be State of The Art. I cannot recommend this company.

I've been without air for a week now and they have lied to the installer over and over that it is on its way & will be there within 1/2 hour. Not true. I purchased my Trane XR August 2016. Two weeks ago my air stopped working. I called my AC guy and told him. He came over and looked and said, "I have bad news." He said it's the coil and the price is 1500 and the cost for me is 500. I spent $7,500 spending good money on a product that I believed in. After reading reviews and have no air for 8 days I am over it. I contacted Trane. They want receipts showing that I service this properly which I plan on doing. I want them to pay the $500 because to me this is disgusting. Anybody that's reading this you may want to look at other products besides a Trane. Read 392 complaints. It seems like everybody is having problems with Trane. Parts are made poorly.

I have seen several other negative reviews (on the Consumer Affairs page) regarding Trane products and would like to add mine. I am retired and live on pension/social security, so I expect something that costs that amount of money to last much longer and not have to be repaired that often. The highly advertised "You Can't Stop a Trane" commercials are a JOKE. I have kept maintenance agreements since the unit was installed in 2011. When the unit (Trane Heat Pump XL 15i) was 4 years old the technician found several leaks and the repair bill for this was pretty hefty. I will give Trane credit for this repair. They refunded me about half of the repair cost; however, there have been several other issues since then.
I have had installed a condensate drain trap and air scrubber to help things run more efficiently. Also, in February 2018 I had all new duct work installed... again, to help things run more efficiently. The unit would have been 7 years old in June. While the parts are under warranty, the labor costs are out of my pocket. In 2017 the motor went out. In March of 2018 the outside unit was frozen and not defrosting. They switched it to emergency heat (which did not come on). It was found to be a relay switch was stuck on the heater control board.
In April 2018 it was short cycling and the contractor was found to be extremely pitted and burnt. They came back to install the new contractor and the system continued to short cycle. The system would go into vacuum and cause it to go out on low pressure and immediately try to come back on which is what burned up the previous contractor over time. Technician said there was a blockage and he needed to replace TXVs and coils to fix the blockage and that may not be a 100% guarantee fix. After the company I use contacted a Trane distributor to check on a repair cost for this it was quoted it could range anywhere from $2500 - $3100. I received a call today (from my most recent complaints) that they could not help in any way because I did not install another Trane unit. Really, why would I want another Trane product??? I am on hold again to see who else may be able to help. Totally ridiculous.

My wife and I are both retired seniors trying to get by on our pensions. We bought this house new in 2012 expecting at least ten years of trouble free operation from all our new appliances and Trane HVAC system. We have our HVAC system checked annually to assure it is functioning properly. In March our system was five years and one month old and the controller on the motor failed and the whole motor had to be replaced for $870 including labor.
One month later, the AC stopped cooling and maintenance was required again. This time the evaporator coil was leaking and needed to be replaced at a cost of $1167. So on a unit barely five years old and just out of warranty, we had put over $2000 in repairs into it. Now, we have no confidence in Trane.products. We leave this house vacant six months of the year for a condo in NH and must have a reliable HVAC unit in our Florida house. If it fails while we are away, dangerous mold can form. A brand new unit is about $2000. If we have another failure the new unit will not be a Trane.

We replaced our aging Goodman (18+ years) air conditioner with a new Trane XR17 5 ton unit; in the process also changing the condenser, coils & furnace with Trane units. Our old unit was beginning to show its age with frequent breakdowns (but no compressor failure yet) so we decided to go with a installer recommended system. The units were installed by AC Advance of Houston, on February 3rd, 2018 - during winter. Total bill $8400. With the coming of summer in Houston, the air conditioner was switched on - and the ac compressor failed after just 1 week of usage, on 1st April 2018! Not quite what would be expected from a 'premium' brand like Trane.
Right now we are stuck in a limbo. I have requested that the ac be replaced by a new unit - since I consider that the unit was new enough when it failed that I should get a new one. The installer is willing to pick it up and install for free - if we can get one. The local distributor for Trane - Hunton Distribution - has shrugged it off by saying that at best we can get a compressor replacement. I have reached out to Trane's warranty replacement - and they are 'doing due diligence' and 'thorough review' of our 'request'. Meanwhile we are sweltering in the Houston heat and humidity while we wait for them to decide on our 'request'. I will update once I hear back from Trane.

It still doesn't run. Their responses, "We'll keep sending the correct parts until it's fixed," but I have to pay the labor at each time is about $2,000 and labor charges. I told them they needed to send me a new system. They offered me a $400 credit towards a new system of $9,000. That's just the outdoor Handler. Talking to Mr. ** was like pulling teeth. Absolutely no compassion for the customer without heat during the winter months. Offered no assistance whatsoever, it was almost as if he was saving money out of his own pocket by turning us down.
The system should have been under warranty and they should have taken care of my problems. Instead I ended up finding a reputable company called Carrier who stands behind their customers and their customer support department and it's been recommended by almost every dealer that I've gone to. Even though they sell Trane they tell me Trane has the worst customer service. That tells you something right there when the dealers know how bad the customer service at Trane and they don't want to put their customers through it. Run run run! Save yourself the hassle of ever having to talk with them. They won't support you anyway!

In 2008 we purchased what we thought was a top of the line product offered by Trane. We replaced the air handler and the heat pump for the home with a new matched Trane system. At that time we had increased the seer rating of the new unit to 14 instead of the required 12 and felt good that for once we would be doing the right thing by spending a little extra to buy quality and save on further utility expense as well. Well let me tell ya. Here it is 10 yrs later, the evaporator coil in the air handler has just failed and is leaking freon. The cost to replace the coil is roughly $2800 bucks. I called Trane and they tell me that the air handler unit is only covered up to 5 yrs and that the heat pump coil and compressor outside are covered for 10. I asked if it was possible for them to policy the replacement cost for the evap coil and there was no reply other than to say the unit is only covered for 5 yrs.
Here's my issue... Why isn't the whole dang thing covered for 10 yrs and why is this expensive, quality piece of equipment even starting to fall apart at the 10 yr mark. I really do not feel like or have the money to replace the entire unit at this time and it most likely wouldn't be a Trane the next go around. I guess the money I thought I was saving for the first 10 yrs I am actually spending in the end. Very disappointed with the product and the Trane company values.

Purchased an expensive Trane HVAC unit 3 1/2 years ago and have had to replace the coil twice. This last time the coil leaked and caused the panel doors to crack according to the technician. The coil is under warranty but the labor to replace this piece is not and neither is the cost of the panel doors nor the labor to install them. The total cost with labor is over $1000. Trane is not taking any responsibility for the panel doors. I am contacting the Attorney General of Florida with this problem because I have been told by people in the HVAC industry that Trane products have become substandard and break down often. I do not think that I should be responsible for paying when an inferior product is being sold.

Trane used to be the top tier but AC installers I have dealt with have told me to stay away from them. They are using cheaper parts to maximize profit. I learned the hard way just recently. My 4T AC unit started leaking due to a cracked PLASTIC pan. Warranty only covers parts, not labor. The installer told me my particular unit, new in 2014, has pan cracking issues. They told me to contact Trane for labor reimbursement due to lemon product. Trane was very rude and said no way, regardless of this being a common issue. I had to eat the $300 labor charge due to Trane's poor choice of materials. They would not compensate any of the labor charge. There was a freon leak as well, another $200 in labor. Rheem is the way to go. My friends, family, and I are done with Trane in this lifetime.
