Our residential central air conditioner a Trane XL1200 and XE90 furnace was installed back in 1996. It has been extremely reliable. The air conditioner is service checked once a year and has never failed once. The furnace has had the blower clutch go after about 13 years and start capacitor went after about 14 years. Very minor repairs with not one electrical or major mechanical failure on either. Getting a good contractor for installation is essential. We had the local Trane dealer do the install of which the bulk of their work is commercial installations. Not sure about the other reviewers but I recommend Trane to everybody for the reliability and efficiency.

XL18I AC system - Purchased and had the unit installed in Dec 2007 in a new house. The first year I went through a summer 2008 it did not cool properly. Had to configure the temp shutoff in the attic unit. The 3rd year 2010, had to replace the circuit board in the blower/condenser coil in the attic. The 5th year 2012 had to replace a relay on the blower/condenser unit in the attic. The 6th year 2013 the capacitor had to replaced in the outside unit. The 7th year 2014 the capacitor set had to be replaced again. The 8th year 2015 the condenser coils had to be replaced along with the expansion valve and refrigerant.
This year (the 9th) 2016 I have had to have service person in again. He originally replaced the switching valve and the expansion valve and it worked the weekend and then went out again. Service person came in and pulled the expansion valve and it was plugged with trash. Installed a filter drier and is still not cooling. This is the biggest POS I have ever owned in my life. Warranty is about to run out and I have had it. Labor and freon cost are killing me.

We purchased two brand new units for our home in Scottsdale, Az. Within two weeks of installation the larger of the two packaged a/c units responsible for cooling the largest part of our home is disabled due to faulty parts and a Freon leak. Trane has no parts to repair the unit. They will not replace the unit nor will they remove the parts needed for our unit from one sitting in inventory. The part we need cannot be available for at least 15 days. Trane seems to place the customer at the bottom of the list so will definitely not buy from them again.

8 years ago I purchased this top of the line unit that featured 2 compressors to insure twice the trouble. Over the years I have replaced the very part in the unit and air handler. The parts were covered, but not the labor. The compressors have been replaced 3 times, the starter 4 times. Now 8 years later I want to replace the unit, but not confident that others are much better. Very frustrating and time consuming. Thankfully I am retired!

We purchased a Trane XL18i high-efficiency heat pump back in the fall. We have had many issues with the unit since installation. It was initially not installed correctly and continues to not work properly. We thought Trane was a good product, but we are seriously questioning this. Now that the season has changed and we are using A/C for the first time, it does not work correctly. We spent thousands of dollars and NO ONE seems to be able to rectify the issues. We have been given our 3rd thermostat (I don't think there's anything wrong with the thermostats), and I'm really not so sure that there isn't a much bigger issue with the installation or unit itself.
We believe at this point that the entire installation needs to be checked, including all wiring that was done with it to find the problem and resolve it once and for all. The Trane dealer we used is useless, so we called the Trane 1-800 number and requested a field service rep be sent out. They refused and said that they didn't care about the issue, talk to the dealer. They really don't stand behind their product! We are obviously not alone with this experience, so couldn't we all band together for a class action lawsuit? Any attorney's reading this or does anyone know an attorney who would take this on? I am on board with this. We would love a refund at this point and have them take all the equipment back so we can go with another company. Wishful thinking.

We purchased a new Trane AC system. Not even a year old and the Blower motor is out. The Orangutan repairman says he will order a new one. 12 days later in record heat... 118 yesterday and just as hot today the part is now on "back order". He promised to find us a loaner portable AC unit until the part arrived... haven't seen that either. The customer service people are useless promising to return our calls with an eta on the blower. Don't get call backs. Bottom line - don't deal with Orangutan and don't buy a Trane!

The issue: I bought Trane AC for my residence in 2013 (model 4TTB3036E1000AA). Just over 2 week ago, the air-conditioning became in effective so I called the installer, but I was told the installer had moved his shop out of Toronto. So, I contacted the Trane agent here in Mississauga, by the name of Comfort Air to come & have a look at the unit as it was still under the 5 year’s warranty. Contrary to their name they have caused me a lot of discomfort. The gentleman came & after checking told me that the Compressor had packed up. After a couple of days of back and forth on the model #, which they claimed initially, they couldn’t locate in their records (The model # etc. was noted by no other than their own rep, in fact he took picture of it & so did I, for my record).
Finally, after wasting another couple of days, they booked order for the replacement compressor under warranty. They took my credit card #, took written confirmation on the order from me, made me sign a clause that if I cancel the order they will charge me $800+HST for cancellation. Told me that the compressor installation work as per their technician will take 3-4 hour’s labour at $99/hr. +HST, Gas refill will be $60/lb and it will require about 3-4lbs. So that adds up to approximately $640 +HST (about $750 charge to the customer) even though it is under warranty? Although I thought it was very high charges, but since I was in such a helpless situation, I had to agree with it.
The sequence of events after the time the order was placed have been pathetic to say the least. We have been sweating throughout this period, having sleepless nights for over 2 weeks because of the heat, but apparently it is none of Trane & their agents' concern. I guess I’m to be blamed for choosing Trane & that is exactly what my family is saying to me now. The entire family is disturbed.
The sequence of events thereafter: After order placement on June 8, they confirmed that they do not have the part in stock, so it will be shipped from US & that it will take 5-10 working days. I was then told on my asking that they normally write 5-10 days as worse case but it normally comes within 5 working days. So, it was to arrive on or before last Wednesday, 15th June 2016. Unfortunately, it didn’t arrive on the date given to us. I wrote to them to inquire about the status, the same day & got a response back saying the unit will arrive on Friday, 17th June if not held up in Customs. Friday came & went but the compressor didn’t arrive.
I called up Comfort Air to check again Friday afternoon, giving them reference to their own letter two days ago. The lady (Carol) told me that it hadn’t arrived & that I should check on Monday. I asked them to give me a firm date that the unit will come & be installed as heat was really picking up & it was become unbearable for us. She said she cannot confirm. Later her Manager/Owner came online & said same thing in rather rude tone. When I protested on their whole attitude, he told me to go to some other agent. I'm stuck in an awkward situation, please advise & help me resolve the issue. Terrible, terrible experience.

I purchased a new Trane system XL16i May 2015. This May (2016) the unit was not working properly. The company that installed it first said it was the reversing valve that was not operating properly so they had to install another one. Then it still was not working properly and they said it was the compressor now that had to be placed. We have been w/o a/c for over a week now. The installer ordered the compressor from Trane and it will take 5 days to get here another weekend w/o air. I called Trane and was informed that 5 days is their standard shipping. If it was longer they could expedite. I guess you can stop a Trane!!! Terrible customer service from the manufacturer and a 1 year old unit that had two major parts fail within a year!!!

My central air unit is 7 yrs. old TRANE XR13, just turned it on last week and nothing seems to be working, called a technician to have a look at the problem. He said that the 3 ton coil and evaporator are not working properly and need to be replaced. He mentioned that the coil is still under warranty, according to the receipt. Called TRANE but apparently it is not. I have the serial no. of the unit and the warranty that apparently covers it for 10 years. TRANE wanted me to call back the installer which I did. The installer said it is TRANE's warranty, not theirs. The usual runaround when there is a problem is in the making. With such a big name and apparently good service record, DO NOT TRUST THIS COMPANY. You pay big money for a central air that supposed to last at least 10 yrs. but it doesn't. I bought a Trane XL 16i about six and a half years ago. Now it has a hole in the coil. The HVAC company comes out each year for preventive service. I'm beginning to think that's a waste of money. Anyway, it'll cost $1,000 to replace the coil and that's with the warranty on the parts. I kept hearing that Trane is supposed to be one of the best. Well, I beg to differ. Will not be buying another Trane.

It's getting old explaining to people why their blower motors fail within a year, coils leak within a year, white flakes from aluminum coils comes out of the vents etc. Trane also had a Model of air handler that had drain pans as brittle as egg shells. This isn't just Trane either. We service all makes and most use the same ECM motor, same chinese sourced copper and aluminum for coils, etc. I miss 20 years ago when a service call was a legitimate problem and didn't require an EXCUSE as to why things failed.

I am a dedicated Trane customer for over 30 years, but the last round of units that we have purchased for our new house are not as reliable. How can the coils in the outside unit go bad in less than 5 years? There is a warranty, but the labor is $1,000 to change them. The water drainage in the interior units gets clogged up too easily. Come on Trane, keep up your quality image. Don't cut corners to the point that your brand is affected. The customers suffer, even when paying top dollar for your products.

I had my upstairs unit replaced with a TRANE system, after the 15 y/o unit failed. I researched models and went with TRANE b/c of their supposed good track record. I have had nothing but trouble with the unit since installed 4 yrs ago in 2012. The coil failed after the first 14 month in 2013, which I was told was an $1800 job had it not been covered by 2 yr labor warranty (thank God for me). The past 2 years I have had to have it serviced for AC failure twice! Each time it was for a different reason, but both resulting in leakage of Freon. The first year it was from a loosened Schroeder. This past repair was from for a leak at txv, a7# Freon leak!
I have a great local company who worked with me on labor charges and recommended I contact TRANE for potential replacement. Their customer escalation department is a JOKE. I requested for them to replace my unit as there has been a problem each year and a major component failure with the coil. They basically said, "sorry for the inconvenience but we can't do anything except pay half of your last charge" (which totaled $274 of $550). It would have been closer to $800 as the labor was 3 1/2 hours but my HVAC company only charged an hour. Sheena **, the escalation rep did nothing but drag her feet for 2 months and offered me real compensation that I deserve.
I honestly think I got a lemon or their product just has deteriorated so bad that they can't even stand behind it anymore. I had my downstairs unit replaced the year before this TRANE with a Carrier and haven't had the first minute's trouble with it. I wish I'd gone with Carrier again! AND, I have both units serviced twice a year for maintenance, so I take care of my investment. DO NOT BUY A TRANE! THEY WILL WRECK YOUR BANK ACCOUNT and THEY DON'T CARE ABOUT THE CUSTOMER.

I am writing to let you know of our dissatisfaction with your company. We have been loyal customers and purchased 3 units (2 in previous home) and now when we have a problem we discover that the unit was not registered in time for your additional 5 yr. warranty. Your envelope tells installer to place packet out of weather with indoor unit. We did not open until we had a problem 4/12 years later. We discover in your paperwork that a 10 year is available but only within 60 days. That is just plain wrong. We now have a new replacement compressor that cost us labor to install and shipping of $100.00 for compressor. We are told by your customer service dept. that new replacement compressor has no warranty beyond the initial one, so we have about 6 months left. WE WILL NEVER BUY A Trane product again. You need to change the writing on the outside of your envelope to say "Customer open for warranty information."

I built my house and had an XL16i installed in 2005. Within 6 months there was a recall and the installer came out and swapped out both the exchanger and the compressor (virtually changed everything out except the copper and control lines). Since that time the high and low compressors have been replaced (at different times) three times up until the 10 year "compressor" warranty period expired. Since there is no coverage for freon or labor, I ate the costs every time and could probably have saved a reasonable amount toward the purchase of a reputable and reliable unit by now. So... two months (2016) out of the 10 year warranty the low-level compressor has once again failed.
My service company was kind enough to wire past the defective compressor and now the unit is running on the high level compressor only. It is simply a matter of time before the remaining stage fails. I spoke at length with the Service Techs and both stated this has been a known, ongoing issue with this unit (in the HVAC community they replace these compressors on a regular basis!) and Trane simply ignores its existence... They (Trane) have a stockpile of compressors known to fail, a system (i.e. XL16i) with these ongoing, inherent problems which they refuse to address, and customers are simply stuck with their lemons! Where is a "Class-action" lawyer when you need them?

I replaced a 2 ton heat pump in January of 2014 to replace another Trane 2T Heat Pump unit that had only been installed in 2001 when the house was built. The new unit quit heating in Nov of 2015 (less than 2 years) and I had White's Heating and Air-conditioning (our local Trane Dealer) come out to fix it. They had to replace the TXV Valve and replace the refrigerant - at a cost to me of $888. Trane replaced the valve itself (which cost $130) but WOULD NOT COVER LABOR OR REFRIGERANT. This is ridiculous in my opinion for a $4000 Heat Pump. Trane's warranty is really bad and I would warn anyone who is thinking about purchasing a TRANE unit to look at another company that is more reputable.

I'm compelled to write my review about my experience with Trane and their authorized dealer YEAKLES HVAC out of Hagerstown, MD. First Yeakles completed the installation of a dual fuel (supposed) 16 seer heat pump and A|C system. Immediately I had concerns. The system just wouldn't heat my house in heat pump mode. As questioned the dealer he had argued everything is correct. Just give it time it will work. Anyway as I wait for this system to work. In January I call because again no heat in heat pump mode. He had sent a tech in. His own tech had told me my system is wrong. That his boss had installed a 5tn blower under a 4tn coil. Making it that the 5tn of air across the coil is cooling the system down not allowing it to heat up correctly. So I called Trane, file a complaint.
The representative showed me documents that my system is not correct. His data showed that my 16 seer system is rated at a 14.5 seer. So you would think they would make their authorized dealer fix it right? WRONG! On March 1 Yeakles had called me confessing he had in fact installed the incorrect stuff. Great right. No, because within 5 short days Yeakles' mind has changed. Even though there is documented proof. He had messed up. Yeakles is now refusing to fix it. What! Oh yeah and Trane has told me they have done all they could do. What! I thought Yeakles was your authorized dealer? Make him fix it! To my point, maybe you can't trust a Trane dealer.

My husband and I live in a rent house that had a frame unit installed less than 3 years ago. While my husband was home recently he heard a loud "boom". Not know what it was he jumped up to see what was going on. He walked thru the house and when he opened our bathroom door only to find it filled with smoke and could see fire outside of the window. Unit had blown up and caught our home on fire. Thankful my husband was home to put out the blaze before it damaged our home (the unit has to be replaced along with a good bit of our siding). We thought maybe it was an electrical issue with the house that caused but after further inspections we found out the unit itself had failed.
We were lucky because we could have lost everything if my husband had not been home not to mention our neighbors because all the homes are close together around here and everyone has dead leaves still laying around which you can see in the photos. Also Our orange garden hose was melted due to the fire so my husband used a bucket to the fire out since there trees everywhere around us. I don't know why could have been done to prevent this but I'm thankful for my hero being able to save our home that day!

I installed a Trane heating system in my new home and have had to replace the igniter numerous times. It had to be replaced twice in the first year. I voiced concerns to Trane's authorized dealer and they said they had consulted with Trane about this as igniters if properly maintained should last years. Their answer was to install a heavier duty igniter. That has not worked as I just replaced it again for the 6th time. I came home on Sunday night December 27 to a freezing house. Had to spend the night next to a space heater trying to stay warm. Not a pretty picture when you are in your 70's.
I have had an ongoing preventative maintenance contract with Comfort Flow Heating which is Trane's authorized representative for this area. So the system has been properly maintained. In fact, their supervisors sad they would always be sure to send out one of their top technicians to ensure it was done properly since we had so many problems.
After this last igniter failure I went directly to Trane to deal with them directly rather than their dealer. I exchanged several e-mails with their Consumer Relations Supervisor regarding the problems and history. On January 25 she asked me for additional information. I responded immediately with the information she requested. She has not responded back. I have tried to contact her several times and get no response. This correspondence is in regards to an erratic and dangerous Trane service vehicle my daughter and I encountered Friday morning (2/12/2016) at 6:30 AM on US 290 at West 43rd in Houston, Texas. I was in the process of taking my daughter to school, the Duchesne Academy in the Memorial area, when we came upon a stalled vehicle in the right lane on the US 290 eastbound main lanes. As usual, the drivers in the adjacent middle lane took turns allowing vehicles from the blocked right lane to merge in. When it came our turn to shift over, the next vehicle intentionally speeded up to block our vehicle from merging in. When it became evident that our vehicle had already moved over before the van could cut us off, the vehicle behind us swerved into the left lane, accelerated past us, got in front of us and slammed on his brakes. For the next two miles the Trane driver continued to slam on his brakes, attempting to cause an accident.
Although my daughter and I were not able to get the license plate for the vehicle, we did get the company name plastered all over the vehicle - Trane HVAC Services - Hunton Distribution, Unit 210. In having dealt with Trane personnel elsewhere in the country, I was always impressed with their courteous attitude and professionalism. Needless to say, my family and I are disappointed with the irrational and antagonistic Trane staff we've encountered in Houston to date. Presuming the driver of Hunton Distributions Unit 210 is representative of their staff in Houston, we will certainly think twice before having this service company work on our residential Trane units.

So much for this reputable brand. New furnace and AC in '09. Flashing a draft pressure error code. Ran and passed all logical checks and even replaced the pressure switch (because cheap and easy) for the heck of it. Besides that ran all other troubleshooting and measure tests. All report fine but the thing still has issues in that it runs sporadically. Paid Fred's $135 to tell me they don't know what the problem is because everything checks out.
Supposedly their $99 initial trip/diagnostic fee covers for 30 days if they need to come back. Two days later and with 53 degree house, they say they spoke with Trane and said to try another pressure switch although doubts that is the problem, and or replace the board to the tune of around $800.00 installed, even though the board checks fine too. Really? Already paid this company to say don't know what is wrong and fixed nothing. Now they want to charge more labor to fix something that they don't know if even is the problem? And of course we find out the original part is not under warranty, but must have had issues because it is obsolete and has been changed a time or two since.
So much for reliability and fair service companies. With all due respect to Jim the kind service tech (and is as miffed as we are) but the companies' charge policies are out of line, and this comes from people in this business, that are unfortunately not local or I'd be using them. 2 years ago, I decided to "upgrade" my aging heat pump to a brand new Trane unit because my old pump was approaching 30 years old and I didn't want it to break down (I like my home to be 69 degrees in the summer and in the low 60's in the winter). I purchased my heat pump thru a "big box" retailer, and had it installed by their contractor.
I've had the contractor that installed it out 4 or 5 times now to "adjust the Freon levels" (because the a/c ran continuously and never reached 69 degrees unless the outside temperatures were in the low 70's). Finally, I just gave up calling the contractor since they were getting annoyed with me calling in so many service requests (all performed at no cost to me). I convinced myself that because of the newer refrigerants used, that my heat pump just didn't perform as well as the old one.
Well, I should have kept calling them back out, because a week ago the outside temperatures dropped to the high 40's and my sunny So. Cal. condo actually got chilly enough for me to turn on the "heat" (I almost never have to turn on the heat in my home because it rarely gets chilly enough, I prefer to wear warm comfortable clothing and use electric blankets). Well, the "heat" never really warmed up my place, even after running it for several hours (I've got the electric bill to prove it!). Long story short, I had the installer come back out to test it, and was informed that the outdoor heat pump unit had failed, and was still covered under warranty, but is going to cost me over $800 in labor to replace it (I wish I made $800 for a day's work!).
So, I decided to check Trane's website to read the warranty, which is where I learned that they REQUIRE all new purchasers to REGISTER THE WARRANTY WITHIN 60 DAYS OF PURCHASE (something the dealer and the store failed to inform me of, and which is something I rarely ever do, because I figure the companies just want our info for marketing purposes). So, instead of a 12 year warranty on this piece of JUNK, I now apparently only have 5 years of coverage for. So, I'm going to be out over $800, and I'm assuming only have 2.5 more years of warranty coverage (my understanding is that the warranty starts from the date of purchase, and doesn't reset the time limit on replacement units).
BOTTOM LINE, I feel DUPED! I've heard their commercials for many years about how "hard it is to stop a trane", I say BS! After reading several other reviews on this site, I've come to the understanding that it's very easy to stop a trane, and unless they reach out to me and somehow cover the labor costs (I sincerely doubt it, from reading other reviews), I WON'T EVER BUY ANOTHER TRANE HVAC UNIT! Funny thing is, I'm about to construct a new home, and will be purchasing two new heat pumps, and again, unless the company reaches out to me and "makes this right", I'm buying a different brand. I feel scammed.

Two of the failures resulted in the units being down for over a month before parts could be obtained. I have had multiple homes with many different brands of HVAC units. This is my first experience with Trane, and it will be my last. My house was custom built and is toured by many people for construction ideas. When asked if I would change anything, the only thing I advise people to do is stay from Trane HVAC units. When the warranty is up on these three units, I will very likely replace them all with another brand. It's obviously "Hard To START A Trane".

So today we find out that Trane is not going to honor their 10 year warranty on a leaky A-coil on our unit because they said we never registered the unit when we purchased it. We were never aware that we had to register the warranty. The person who sold us the unit never said and we simply didn't know. When you are in the process of building a house and have a million and one things on your mind and to do, something is bound to happen and things might get missed. So we didn't register our unit, but Trane knows we bought a Trane under good faith, but now will not honor their warranty. We have only been in our new home for 6 years and this happens?
When we bought a Trane, we thought we were buying a really great product backed by an even greater warranty. Well not so much. We can prove we bought the unit but Trane will not honor because we didn't register the warranty. I'm sick to my stomach right now at Christmas time that we have to shell out 1,200.00 dollars to fix a leaking A-Coil. I SIMPLY CAN'T UNDERSTAND WHY TRANE WILL NOT HOLD UP THE WARRANTY BECAUSE A COUPLE PIECES OF PAPER didn't get filled out. I will promise TRANE this, I will post on Facebook about them, I will get the word out to anyone who is building to be wise, very wise. But what gets me the most is how in less than 6 years our unit is broken. I guess Trane isn't really the best unit out there anymore!!!

We bought 1.5 year ago new AC system from "Trane" because the high quality standard (we had in mind). A month ago, after the one year warranty, the air handler started to leak and after consulting the dealer they ordered a new water pan and they did the installation of that pan. But to install a new pan the coil has to taken out. I was watching this all on the side, but when they took out the coil I saw a damaged coil and stopped them from finishing and took pictures of the damage. The dealer finished the job, I paid him.
I filed a complaint against Trane. First I found it unfair to let me pay for that renewing of that pan and second about the damage on the coil. They agree to pay for the repair but the damage on the coil they waved that away. I then filed a complaint through the BBB and the answer of Ms. Erin ** (Consumer Relations Supervisor) was, "There is no damage to your coil that is not cosmetic. The functionality, life expectancy, and efficiency will not be negatively affected by the bent spine fins on your evaporator coil".
"The equipment passed inspection because there is no mechanical damage to the equipment!" I would like to say to Ms. **, "You should be a great car sales women, you will sell me a car with substantial damage and you use the sentence from above. Functionality, life expectancy and efficiency will not be negatively affect your car." Also, sometimes when a product has a dent or a cosmetic damage, the factory or the dealer will give you a discount because of the damage. The worse of this case is that the coil with the damage passed quality control. So there are probably many of those coils in most of your air handlers. We now talk about the "high" standard quality Trane will allow us to believe.
I already suggested to Ms. ** that if she allows this type of damage on their outside condensers (where you can see the coil), I explained to her that this quality of a condenser would never sell. I'm seeking now for, first, a apologize for the way they allow to pass coils with substantial damage and just put them in your air handlers, is just wrong. Secondly, because I expected a brand new, not damaged air handler, a discount on the unit or replacement is in order. Because of all this aggravation and the time I have put into this that discount will be at least 50%. If needed I can add the pictures.

I purchased a 1-1/2 ton and a 5 ton Trane model 4ttR HVAC condenser and air handler, in November 2011 for my 2-zone Florida home. The units have functioned free of significant problems until about 2 weeks ago (Nov 2015) when the smaller unit burned out the fan motor, and then a week later when the compressor in the 5 ton unit suffered a leak. Both parts were replaced under the manufacturer 10-year parts warranty -- but watch out, because the light you see at the end of the tunnel is another train -- being the labor costs which exceeded $1,000 combined. This is an out-of-pocket expense not covered by the parts warranty.
Though I am grateful for the parts warranty, having to spend this much on labor costs to repair 2 separate units that are only 4 years old, is simply not something I would have expected from a product advertised to be built like a train. I paid almost $9,000 for the new units before applying the state energy rebates, and for this price I think I had a right to expect they would operate, free of major malfunction for at least 5 - 7 years before needing major parts replacements. At this rate, I am very concerned that the units won't ever make it to 10 years before they completely fall apart. These Trane units replaced an older model (different manufacturer) that lasted about 16 years. When the time comes to replace it, you can be sure I won't be riding with this Trane again.
P.S. -- I asked my installer if they could contact Trane on my behalf for some dispensation, and they politely said they would never get anywhere with that since they are a dealer; instead they suggested that I, as the end-user/consumer contact Trane directly to see if they might assist with some of the labor costs -- after all, mine was not an "isolated" instance of one bad unit, but rather two units suffering major parts failures within a couple of weeks of each other; however after reading reviews of other folks who had contacted Trane, it seemed very much like it would be a waste of my time, particularly in view of the reaction I got from my dealer, so I chose to just "suck it up." But neither will I be a repeat buyer when the time comes. "Fool me once, shame on you; fool me twice, shame on me."

In late 2009 I purchased a Trane XR 15 high efficiency heat pump with air handler and evaporator coil. By July 2012 the unit was malfunctioning. The Trane installer technician came out and I was told the evaporator coil was low on refrigerant. There was a refrigerant leak somewhere. Refrigerant was added and four units of dye were added. That service cost me $230. The technician said he would come out in a week to check it. After a few weeks I inquired with the installer company as to why the technician had not come back. I was told by the receptionist that I lived a long way away (50 miles) and when someone got in my area they would check for the leak. Nobody came.
In October 2013 the unit iced up so their technician finally showed up. We knew the unit leaked so obviously it was low on refrigerant again. He checked the evaporator coil and saw dye on several places on the coil. He said the evaporator coil had to be replaced. The coil was under warranty. The mechanic came out a few days later to replace it. The original unit had a copper coil but the replacement coil they put in was aluminum. It cost me $568 dollars for refrigerant, labor, and travel charges. I did not think the heat pump was as efficient as it was with the first coil.
By June 2015 the unit iced up again. There was still some dye in the system from the last leak test. The Trane technician observed that the new evaporator coil was leaking from 8 different places. He said that Trane was not like they used to be. He indicated that he was having similar problems with other customers. I believe he said the parts were now coming out of China. He said that their installation company was considering installing for someone other than Trane.
He told me that I should tell Trane to reimburse me for the expenses to replace that second coil. The coil had lasted only about 20 months. It may have even been leaking from the date of installation. A couple of days later a team came out and replaced the evaporator coil. They replaced the aluminum second coil with a third copper coil. I also noticed that the coil was dripping water when they brought it in the house. I will address that later. The bill for the refrigerant, labor, and travel was $661.
That charge is what I wanted to get reimbursed from Trane. I was given a number to contact so I contacted them. After getting past the customer service gatekeeper I got what they call their escalation department. They wanted the invoices. A month later they wanted all the service records ever done. Days later they said that they submitted everything to whatever department resolves these things. I soon got a call and I was told my claim was denied because I provided no record that the unit had been serviced between the time of the first coil failure and the second coil failure (20 months).
I let the woman know that in those 20 months the evaporator coil would not get dirty so the coil did not need service. In fact, both of the indoor evaporator coils that were taken out were not dirty. She was inflexible. I told her my installer did not want to come out the 50 miles to clean coils that were not dirty. She said I could use any company. However, I thought if I did not use a Trane certified technician it would void the warranty. Besides, people around here don't like serving units installed by someone else and are a different product than the units that they install. There are no certified Trane installers closer.
I then mentioned that the original coil was made out of copper coil and when they replaced it they put in an aluminum coil. She indicated that she believed that all of Trane coils were now make of aluminum. I said that was strange, because the coil they just put in the unit was copper again. Then I put 2 and 2 together. The coil they put in was copper but they were not making copper coils anymore and water was dripping out of the coil from the inside of the coil. Bingo! Apparently they replaced the second failed coil with a used coil. I asked her if they were placing these leaking defective coils with used coils? She thought that should not happen but it seems to me that this is exactly what did happen.
Even so, there was no changing her mind about reimbursing me. Just because Trane manufactures inferior coils and replaces them with used coils apparently carries no weight with Trane representatives. And I certainly do not have any reason to believe that the used coil they just put in will last and longer than the last two. This could go on until their warranty expires and then I would have to pay for the coil as well as the service charges. And folks, we are not even talking about what might go wrong with the rest of the system. Needless to say I will not every purchase a Trane heat pump again and I will certainly discourage others from doing so.

Now, 7 years later, the unit froze up because the internal filter is clogged. We clean the first filter every month, the 2 nested filters every 3 months, and the ionic filter once a year. Just like we were told to.
It's going to cost us 400 more to get the internal coil cut out and cleaned. They don't know how the junk got thru the other filters. Looked through paperwork that previous owner left. Found extended warranty purchased through the same company that did work in 2013. They failed to mention extended warranty. Contacted extended warranty com. Was told it's only common sense that no history of purchase/transferable extended warranty was mentioned by company. I can't believe my ears. That is at best unethical, at worst fraud.
Contacted warranty com. Must change name on extended Warranty. Can only do via mail with 25.00 fee. Had representative of service provider before mentioning extended Warranty. Able to repair next day, just needed to check price of part. Next day informed company of extended warranty. No reply. Got another opinion, said installed wrong coil in 2013. This was from local Trane representative. Trane won't pay for replacing coil. 2013 the coil installed was the replacement part for unit. Recalled part.
We have mold from no dehumidifier because unit broken. I live in Oklahoma. It's July 31 2015. Trane made claim for review about problem. Customer service 800 number literally told me to pay someone to fix. Then I mentioned 2nd opinion. Wanted to know if they touched the unit. That diagnostic examination would void warranty. I quoted exact wording of contract. Repairs made by anyone but servicer will void warranty. Original service provider now wants us to pay upfront then get reimbursed from Trane. Now Extended Warranty not honored. Claim coil never covered. In booklet from Trane states will replace coil if recalled. No labor $$ provided. Either way extended warranty states that parts, labor, are included for internal parts. The coil is an internal part, written on original warranty document.
Customer service is really loss prevention. The claim filed by Trane about mold has become review over claim of coil replacement coverage. So the unit is crap. They know it's crap. Plus extended warranties are subjective, Trane might decide no existence. We are documenting experience, reporting to attorney General, insurance commission, state licensing department. BBB, I do think that we should file class action lawsuit. The company has fraudulent business practices. I'm looking for a federal consumer protection network. Legal action must occur.

I am actively seeking a Florida class action attorney to represent me and thousands of other Florida consumers. Here is the background: In Feb. 2013, I was quoted $6185 for a new TRANE XL Hyperion 16 SEER 3 ton heat pump system for my condo in Gainesville, FL. This included a 10-year limited parts warranty supplied via the TRANE corporation, which was why I selected their equipment. The local utility company supplied a generous rebate as well, so my final purchase price was $5085 out of pocket. There were lots of forms and even air flow tests to be performed for energy efficiency, and a city building permit, too.
Unbeknownst to me, this 10-year limited warranty coverage required ONLINE REGISTRATION WITHIN 60 DAYS, or became invalid, and was reduced by 50% to a mere 5-year base warranty. The online registration had to be done via a TRANE company website. However, I was not told to register the serial numbers, or I would lose my warranty coverage. But, the dealer, who would be clearly advantaged by this reduced coverage, knew about it for certain, as the policy started 4 years prior in 2009.
My AC system is now 2 years old and I learned quite by accident, that I had lost my warranty coverage because it was not registered online before Day 61 on the TRANE website. I then contacted the dealer by phone and email and filed a request with TRANE to get my original 10-year limited warranty (which I paid for) re-instated. After two weeks of email, calls and postings on Facebook with the TRANE Corporation, I was finally told this week by phone by Cierra **, Trane Escalations Supervisor, that Trane "respectfully decline[s] participation to change your warranty terms to 10 yrs. On behalf of Trane Inc. I do apologize for any inconvenience this has caused and appreciate the time you took to make us aware of your concerns." Thus my 10-year limited warranty is now invalid and I am left with only 5 years.
I believe that this is "warranty fraud" and may also violate the Florida Deceptive and Unfair Trade Practices Act (DUTPA), and likely constitutes bad faith on the part of Trane, and the installing dealer, who should have registered the serial numbers on the day of the install, just as a LEXUS dealer would register your VIN with LEXUS when they sell you a car.
Please note that this required 60-day online registration policy is an advantage to ANY UNSCRUPULOUS HVAC dealer, and a huge DISADVANTAGE to most consumers, including the blind, handicapped, mentally challenged, poor people with limited or no Internet access, out of town property owners, etc. I am appalled at TRANE's response to this sincere and genuine effort on my part to restore my original 10-year warranty coverage. I believe that it is possible that HUNDREDS of consumers fall victim to this "disappearing warranty coverage policy," but I am only asking for your help to restore my original warranty. However, it is worth noting that TRANE could solve this problem tomorrow by REQUIRING that ALL FLORIDA DEALERS register the serial numbers of their system on the date of installation.
Meanwhile, I believe the damages in the loss of 5 years of warranty coverage is about $3000, if not more. I have contacted an HVAC warranty services company to find out the actual cost to restore similar warranty coverage. I doubt that any other local dealer will issue extended warranty coverage on my system, as it is now 2 years 4 months old. ANY HELP YOU CAN PROVIDE IS APPRECIATED. I HAVE LOTS OF DOCUMENTATION I CAN SHARE, INCLUDING THE ORIGINAL SALES QUOTE, INVOICE, AND MANY EMAIL TO TRANE AND LIBERTY AIR.

I purchased a home in September 2012 and learned that the A/C unit was not working (found out on the day I closed). I advised seller that I would not move forward with purchase if I had to replace a major appliance like an A/C unit. Seller agreed to replace and I agreed to replace furnace portion of package to avoid a greater cost should the furnace not work. I started noticing the A/C heating up at certain parts of the day and thought I needed to readjust thermostat.
After several days of increasing temperatures during the day I decided to call a service technician only to learn that I had no refrigerant in my system. Further investigation showed a leak in the coil. I called the company who installed and they said the part was no longer under warranty and that the warranty was only for 1 year. I decided to call the service technician back and advised him what the installing company said and he advised me that the part that is not working is under warranty and that Trane is aware of the defect with the type coils they use. So the part was definitely under warranty.
It turns out that the Tech was correct and Trane provided the coil at no charge, however, I was stuck with a $575.00 labor charge for a unit that is only 2 years, 10 months old. While I am pleased with the work that the Tech did on the unit and how quickly he came to repair and how thoroughly he cleaned up the area after he completed the work, I immediately changed my servicing company.
If Trane is aware of this defect, why are they allowed to keep selling a piece of equipment (part) that is obviously defective when they know it is going to fail? While they do not make money off selling the part it still costs consumers "labor cost" - in my case, $575.00. My "dissatisfied rating" is because Trane knowingly sells this defective merchandise that would cost consumers huge labor costs in such a short time. How can they do this?

Trane XV20 Variable Speed - Purchase the unit in February 2014. Nothing but problems. After 1 year and approx 10 service visits the unit will not hold freon. The dealer has replace the access ports due to a factory defect. The electronic drive exploded while the tech was servicing the unit; it was replaced. I have requested a replacement unit under warranty and Trane refuses to do anything about it. The tech keep coming out weekly to put 6-7 lbs of freon in it and it continues to leak and it is so bad with oil on the pad they cannot find the leak in the coil. I am very unhappy and will be taking legal action to Trane. I am having it replace with a different brand. I will never purchase Trane products again.

Less than one year ago for $9200.00 we purchased from and had Lowe's of Jonesboro, AR. Install a complete new Trane xv95 air conditioning/heating unit. It has already stopped working. I called their service department and they sent out a Mohr repairman from Wynne, AR. He cleaned the coils on the outside unit and told us that it was just dirty and needed to be cleaned, charged us $172.00 and told us that it was regular maintenance and therefore not covered by warranty.
He told us we should have been regularly cleaning the coils---which no one told us about until now. He told us it would take awhile for the unit to cool the house down, packed up his tools, and left. That was just yesterday. Today we are still having the same problem. We have the thermostat set on the usual 77 but it has gone up again to 82 and stays there with the unit running steadily but not getting any cooler. I have called them again and they may be able to come out tomorrow (heat in the high 90's). I will never buy another Trane product and will certainly never make another purchase from Lowe's!!!

I utilized Lowe's in Dec 2013 for the purchase of a total heating/air conditioning system to include new ducts throughout the house in the attic. This work was subcontracted by Lowe’s using a local Heating&Air company (H&A). (I don't know if allowed to say their names). The work was done 6 Jan 2014 through 10 Jan 2014. Feb 4 2014 notified H&A heat pump covered inside and outside with solid ice, came and repaired. Feb 7 2014 H&A tech here as froze again. Feb 9 2014 I called and was told defroster ordered. Feb 13 2014 I called H&A they said they are supposed to expedite the part and defroster is on back order. Feb 17 2014 H&A here and changed defroster. Feb 21 2014 H&A replaced sensor and defroster from icing. Feb 28, 2014 I called H&A heat pump again iced up.
2 March 2014 I notified H&A heat pump fan hitting ice. 4 March 2014 H&A said defroster coming through Customs and should be here end of week or next week. 17 March 2014 H&A said defroster in yesterday (16th March). 18 March H&A changed thermostat in heat pump. June 30 2015 11:07 am I called H&A and was told part had to be ordered and should be in tomorrow or Thursday.
14:00pm AC running and room temp at 77 degrees and increasing. Thermostat set at 72 degrees. I said I would appreciate an update first thing Monday morning since the office is closed today.
6 July 2015 11:30 Received call from H&A, he said he will try and track down where part is and call me back. 11:40 am H&A called and said it was on the dock in Little Rock and to be delivered today and H&A will install it tomorrow afternoon. I told him that if it isn't there then someone needs to put Freon in. 7 July 2015 H&A called and said truck driver with parts was in an accident and she was trying to find where part was. She said something about install tomorrow and I told her someone needs to come today and put Freon in today. I also informed her I have a mountain dog and the heat can kill her. She said someone will be here today to either install the part of put Freon in. Currently 95 degrees inside house and 90 degrees outside.
7 July @17:10 Tech shows up to add Freon, he does not have part, said was almost empty of Freon. 17:33 still filling with Freon, house 86 degrees. I voiced to tech that I was very upset, that for 12 days and still no part and I had to call to find out any information and I was left without ac for so long. 17:43 completed filling with Freon and left. 8 July 2015 14:30pm one worker here and waiting for another to bring coil. 14:40 other guy here with coil. 16:30 replaced coil and added Freon and left
10 July 2015 10:57 am Spoke with H&A and informed her ac set at 70 degrees and in 77 degrees in house, ac not functioning again. She said someone will be out this afternoon to look at it. 11:07 I called and informed H&A that there was fresh water on the wooden platform the air handler sits on. She said to turn off ac and turn on fan- I did this. 14:30 took dog to be boarded, she was lethargic and no ac in house. 15:33 H&A called and said he'd be here in 20 minutes. 15:55 Tech here, after he looked over unit I asked what was wrong with it. 12 July 2015 10:40am called H&A after hours number and told her ac not functioning set at 70 degrees and 77 degrees in house. She said someone will call.11:23 received call from H&A will be here in 20 minutes. 11:25 boarded my dog, very lethargic. 11:47 tech here, said more than half Freon leaked out, recharging unit. 13:00 said leak at junction of heat pump compressor and he could patch it. I said that was NOT acceptable. This is a new unit and not even two years old and patching is not acceptable. I said Trane can replace both units at their expense, poor quality equipment. I said I cannot deal with this anymore and had to walk away. Tech said he will call his boss. 13:20 Tech said his boss would want him to patch leak so that I have air until they can deal with Trane regarding replacement.
He did not know how long that would take. He is currently patching leak on outside unit. I told him this is causing me too much stress and I cannot deal with it. I will be seeking what legal avenues I have in the state of Arkansas. I have spent too much money and received inferior parts. 13:48 one of H&A owners called, and said they will talk to Trane tomorrow and will demand Trane do something and he will call me tomorrow. He said he will make it right. He also said he thinks I got a lemon and will push for new equipment. They sent a technician out after 5 days. He said the unit needed a new temperature control valve and one would be ordered. It has now been 3 weeks since we contacted Orangutan, and we find out today after I complained to both Orangutan and Trane that the valve has been back ordered. The unit has been running almost constantly since we contacted the installer. Now today will not even maintain 76 degrees. This is horrible customer service by Trane. We spent $16,000 on these two units and I believe that they have completely gone off the rails as far as reliability and customer service. They have some serious fence mending to do..

I had great luck with a 3 1/2 ton Trane AC unit purchased in the early 1990's. Decided to install complete new system in 2010. New unit problems included improper charging of system during installation requiring follow-up visit to get unit to cool. During first year blower motor in evaporator unit failed requiring enduring hot conditions for a few days until new motor was received and installed. In June 2012, unit had lost its charge requiring recharge. Again hot days endured. Leak detection came up negative. In June 2015, unit has again failed to cool. Suspected loss of charge again but waiting 2-3 days in heat for technician to get to work on it. It gets hot in the summer in south Texas. I regret having bought another Trane. Trane equipment quality has plummeted since 1990's and is now no longer dependable. The unit is a 14 SEER system installed and serviced by Honeycutt Air Conditioning in Belleville, TX.

AND it is just beyond the 10 year warranty. Well isn't that convenient? This is unacceptable considering the amount of money paid for this product and the time and money spent in twice yearly "preventative" maintenance. In October 2014, I bought a Trane XV18 Outdoor unit model #4TWV8036 from a popular installer in Northern VA. This unit was to replace a Ruud single stage 11 SEER unit located just outside of my master bedroom wall. The installer led me with the impression that decibel level output by this new variable speed unit would be considerably less than what we were used to. Trane advertises the unit to run at 72 decibels (47 degree ambient temperature). As soon as winter hit and we cranked on the heat, I knew a mistake had been made, and I was in for a ride. Long story short, the unit was running at just under 90 decibels and the variable speed compressor put out a searing noise that would not let me sleep at night. The installer agreed to decibel test the unit and found the same outcome. An insulation blanket was placed over the compressor to decrease the noise by 5 decibels.
The installer and a representative from Trane came to my home to tell me that my unit was running according to specs. I was told that other customers were having similar issues with XV18 noise output and that Trane was putting out a software "patch" that might help. It did not. The installer also offered to change my unit's compressor settings to decrease noise output, but I told the installer that I paid to have the unit run at maximum efficiency. At this point, many emails had gone back and forth between me, the installer, and the Trane rep over the course of 5 months. Since the high speed compressor was the real issue, I even asked to have XV traded out for a two stage XL. However, Trane would refuse to reimburse me the difference between the two units. So, I was stuck with a noisy, variable speed unit.
Finally, the installer agreed to move the unit to a farther point away from our bedroom at no additional cost. We are now in the AC season, and I must say that the unit is true to form during the summer months. Noise levels are as advertised when the unit is in AC mode. In conclusion, my advice to-date is to avoid placing the XV18 anywhere close to living space that requires low levels of noise. This unit offers high levels of noise output at high pitch when in heat mode at 50% or more compressor speed.

I financed a Trane exactly three years ago (model #4WCC3036A1000A). The compressor has now failed. I called the installer who made a service call of $89. I was informed that it will cost me $1390 for labor, Freon, etc. to replace the compressor that's under WARRANTY. It truly does stink that this occurred. I'm one person who cannot afford an additional $1400. The installer reports that they will replace the txv, filter drier, and o.e.m. capacitor along with the compressor. The installer reports that there are nothing wrong with the other items (just the compressor has failed), it's just that they will replace everything so I may have an additional warranty through the installer.
I just want to make sure that Trane will not be charged for the additional parts that are not defective, unlike the compressor. The installer reports that they can finance the services. Unfortunately, this is the way I will have to go. I see that there are others with similar experiences. It's my fault for accepting "word of mouth" instead of actually researching consumer reviews.

Replaced a 14-yr old 5-ton RHEEM split system with a new 5-ton XV20i condenser ("matched field" - XC80 gas furnace and 5-ton evaporator coil in the attic). Well, I was surely sold on looks and the rhetoric of what it can do - a variable speed (720 speeds) of compressor and furnace, Wi-Fi capable, energy-efficiency, etc. Right from the start I realized there is something fundamentally wrong with this AC system. As an example, lowering the temp. from 75 to 73 degrees takes over an hour to achieve (with inside humidity of 50% and outside temp just below 90 degrees). My old Rheem unit, before going out (due to its evaporator coil leaking) would take about 5 mins (for sure no more than 10 mins under similar conditions).
After the system was installed I thoroughly inspected each and every duct supply coming out of the new plenum for leaks and found none. Please note, I did not have new ducts installed, so my existing ones were used with the new system. Also, the new system was connected to the existing freon lines (that run from the outside unit to the attic). I believe, if the freon lines (hidden as they pass thru walls and to the attic) are leaking (thus showing that the system is undercharged), the thermostat would detect such and give an error code. But no alerts or error code(s). When the unit is cooling (fan blower is on), there is a loud, annoying noise coming from one of the two return vents. When at night, being quiet, the noise is so loud that we can not stand it and takes us longer to fall asleep.
Asking the install company to investigate/resolve an issue is like asking for a discount after you already paid them for the service - after being paid for their service, they are gone/done with you! Making things worse, calling Trane's customer service is just a joke - long wait time, untrained / uninformed customer service people. The company does not have any tech support. The company does not have a field rep like other HVAC manufacturers do. You get ZERO support from this company and you will immediately feel unwelcome when talking to them.
As a result, we have nowhere to go, no help from Trane at all!!! Their response was "call your installer or an authorized Trane dealer for help." Well, calling another dealer for service, after you tell them you had a brand new system installed a week ago, they will shy away (not wanting to deal with another installer's flaws). Trane knows that and they do not care. This is TOTALLY unacceptable! Folks, this is a bad company, PERIOD!! Think twice before you buy their products. This has been an ongoing nightmare... cannot cool the house efficiently and cannot sleep at night from the noise. All of these because of Trane (an unorganized company making flawed products and providing zero tech support)! SHAME ON YOU TRANE!

Replaced our furnace and central air units in 2012. We purchased Trane from our HVAC provider...we had heard good things about them and had no concerns. First year, the unit worked fine. However, we had to have three service calls in 2014 because of cooling issues. We live in Wisconsin so we do not use the unit too often but three calls in the first year and half was nuts, not to mention the service charges we paid. About a month ago, we joked that we should turn the unit on just to make sure it worked and sure enough, we turned it on and 5 hours later, our house was two degrees warmer.
Another call to the company we use who came out the next day and after checking the unit, told my husband that the coil needed to be replaced, and that while the part was under warranty, the labor would cost 1800 and take a couple weeks to get the part...the unit has been discontinued. Our other option was a new unit for 2100.00 (Trane would give us 300.00 off the new unit - big deal) We opted for the new unit, who would fix the old for that amount of money with no guarantee something else would go wrong. Now, every time I go in the basement and look at my new Trane furnace, I wonder what the future holds for us.....hoping we don't have to replace that as well. Very disappointed and will never recommend them and/or buy another Trane product. Personally, I think the unit was defective from the start and feel we have been taken advantage of.

I was further aggrieved when I found that the unit always starts in 'Trane' mode, irrespective of what I set last. I was further distressed to find that the electrical relay which controls compressor made a loud thud sound every time it switches on/off.
To add to my woes, the indoor unit make loud hissing sound when compressor starts. When the dealer tried to re-vacuum, lot of machine oil came out from the refrigerant lines. My wife and I purchased a 2500 sf. home in 2011 that was equipped with 2 Trane HVAC systems. The home was designed to operate with 2 systems to provide adequate airflow for both 1st & 2nd floors and to eliminate the excessive wear & tear of only relying on 1 unit to do the job. To this point, I have never owned a home that was equipped with a Trane product, but have always heard great things. We actually thought we were getting a little "Peace of Mind" because of the feedback we've heard about the Trane brand, but "Peace of Mind" was the last thing we received.
Our opinion about Trane products took a turn for the worst last week when I noticed that the AC system sounded slightly louder than usual. My first instinct was to check the vents for airflow, which there was no cold ac coming out. When I checked the main HVAC unit, I noticed the lines were frozen (usually means low Freon or better yet, a Freon leak). At this point I called a reputable AC company to come out, fix the leak and recharge the system. When the technician arrived he began troubleshooting the system and discovered there was severely more problems with the unit than originally expected. When the technician opened the unit he noticed that there was excessive corrosion to the internal parts, which also needed to be repaired.
After a full survey of my ac system the technician told me that I have 2 choices: Option 1, repair the defective internal parts which was quoted at $2,600.00 or Option 2 Replace the entire AC system for about $6,000.00. I called Trane to inquire about any warranty offering and the lady kindly informed me that my unit was not covered.
I'm not a detractor of the Trane brand because of the quoted cost of repair, I am completely aware of the Cost of Ownership and maintenance cost. I'm a detractor of the brand because the product performance/life expectancy does not meet the company's product message. There is a certain level of expectations that consumers have when they spend their additional money for a premium product. Being a first time Trane owner and having had my first experience working with Trane's customer service, I can honestly say I have ZERO interest in ever owning another Trane. I will try to load pictures of my A/C system to accurately reflect its condition. Externally, the system looks brand new. Internally, well, that is a different story.

MY HOUSE NEEDS A NEW AIR HANDLER. TRANE HAS DISAPPOINTED ME. IT IS NOT BUILT TO LAST, WHICH IS ENTIRELY UNACCEPTABLE BECAUSE I WAS PROMPTED TO BUY TRANE FOR ITS QUALITY OF OPERATION AND LONG LASTING VALUE. The leak has caused a problem in my ceiling as well that needs to be repaired. I replaced 2 Rheem systems that were in the house when I purchased the new Trane systems that I was recommended by local installers for its high quality & quiet system of operations. I paid in excess of $8,000. The 2 Rheem systems were in the house lasted over 15 years the originals that were installed when the house was built.
I have never had a bad AC system in my prior home. They worked well past the warranty & since I am such a stickler for air filter change in the vents & the air handle I didn't feel the need for a service contract with my AC company. Quite honestly I don't trust AC companies. They have bad reputations for ripping off consumers. Based on your logic, I should have service contracts for all my home appliances because it will all breakdown unless it is serviced by a professional constantly. Over the years you can see I had the units serviced & checked. The other unit needed Freon & the drip line to be unclogged. Not the problems of this one!!!
I have 5 Samsung TVs that are well past their warranty. Dishwasher from Bosch well past its warranty. Wash & dryer from Maytag, GE & LG kitchen appliances well past their warranty & they work just fine. With that said can you explain why my other Trane system hasn't had all these problems? Why hasn't my other air handler not caused me the same grief??? Why would 1 system operate problem-free while the other is having problems? Maybe the one Air handler is a lemon that needed the coil to be replaced but wasn't a few years back when it was covered under warranty? Maybe Trane should send out a home office professional to go & take a look. Maybe I was sold an American Standard & not a Trane air handler & it is a lemon.
I say lemon because it didn't built to last 6 years. Are we clear on my point of view? If the selling point was that Trane is not built to last longer than 6 years under normal operating situation in a residential home and unless it is serviced regularly, they should have made a point of that when I bought it because I would have gone elsewhere because my prior systems didn't require such hand holding and no one I know has had these kinds of problems. I was told that Trane would last me many years & were an excellent value. I bought these systems with the EXPECTATION I was getting DOUBLE DIGIT years out of them!!! I couldn't disagree any more. You need to reconsider your position. Trane had a recall out for 100,000 units - make a mistake there??? Causing electrical problems, shock, possible fires??? Take care of your AIR Handler in my house.

So we bought the top of the Line Trane Heat Pump Model XV20i. It was installed in October. In November it began having icing issue. The Heat Pump would be covered in ice. By December the Heat Pump was having catastrophic failures, complete shutdown. We were heating our house using the Auxiliary Heating System. That proved to be costly in terms of electricity. The Trane technicians and our local installation crew maintained the problem was caused by a program bug.
Trane installed a new program. Seemed to work for a time. Then more catastrophic shutdowns. Trane technicians then claimed the problem was a manufacturing error - the unit had not been loaded with enough cooling material and hence did not have enough internal pressure to operate effectively. The unit worked for a time then in Mid April we had one more catastrophic failures. This time the compressor had given up. We have advised the Trane distributor to remove the system.

When I contacted Trane corporate to ask them to help me deal with the issue and potentially replace what is clearly a faulty unit (as I did not have technicians on-site the numerous other times the unit would require resetting) it took multiple days to get a call back.
They are not willing to send a field rep and are clearly not standing behind their products. Getting through to their customer service require that I call them back and though I would be told I would be contacted they failed to do so consistently to help resolve the issue. I had a Trane Heat Pump installed January 2014. Initially it was quiet and shut off the same... quietly. Because the compressor is close to my living room wall and the handler is up in the bedroom attic, this issue is quite important to me. The air-handler revs up and pulsates before the unit kicks on and then since it is a two-stage unit, it does the same when it shuts off. It's very annoying when I am trying to sleep at night. The outside unit which is located on the ground outside the living room runs quietly enough until it shuts off.
It shuts off very hard and very abruptly causing the metal unit to sound like someone just hit it real hard with a rubber mallet. And then it continues to vibrate probably due to the fact that the metal that is used is so thin it cannot absorb it, I am guessing. I've heard it go off half way down the block when I am out front. It's kind of startling. I had a routine maintenance check this week and mentioned this to the repair man. He went out and drilled something and it seemed okay but for only two days. Now it is the same as it was before.
As far as the air handler, he said that that was its way of "talking" to the outdoor unit and it was normal. That's just the way they work he said. All in all, I wish I would not have bought this system. I also will, in the future, deal with a company that takes my concerns seriously and fixes the problem... right. I am stuck with this unit for a while now so I guess I will have to make the best of it... somehow. In the meantime, I plan on calling Trane tomorrow (good luck, huh, from what I've been reading) to see what might be up. I also will be calling the service company to tell them their fix didn't fix the problem. On the positive side, this system does cool well and my power bills are lower which is a great thing since I live in the desert. However, it is definitely coming at a price... my rest and peace of mind and the peace of my neighbors. Their patio is on the side of where my a/c unit is located.

In heat mode the coil caused the electrical panel to condensate, shorting out the control panel. Trane says because it was not installed by one of their "DEALERS" the warranty was null and void. I am very dissatisfied with this product and will tell everyone I know how Trane will not address the problems with their design flaws.

Purchased new Trane XL15i electric heat pump system for over $14K in 2013. Never used since house has wood heat, electric heat pumps are costly and A/C not necessary, Purchased for home re-sale. Discovered unit not operating in January 2015 - first time we attempted to heat house. Now almost May and unit still not working. So far fan motor has been replaced, a capacitor, two circuit boards, and now more Freon added. It appeared to work, but original problem appeared next day. Either units are defective, or technicians have insufficient repair training. I want to sell home, but it won't pass home inspection until the unit works. I should have read reviews, but assumed Trane was a reputable brand. It is essential to have a back up heating system if you choose this product. Unit is attractive and looks "high tech". Too bad it cannot function.

Warranty expired for unit Dec 2014. We have had 4 compressors to go bad in this unit and it was 10 yrs old in Dec 2014. On top of that the fan motor and module went out also. They will not warranty anything or offer any kind of money toward a new unit. Please don't waste your money on the 19I unit - it is a piece of junk. Oh yeah - you probably can't buy it anyway, because it uses the old type Freon. LOL I guess Trane doesn't care if they get a bad rap on this because the Consumer Relations Dept in St Louis doesn't care either. Told me it was my fault because I didn't have the Spring & Fall service checkups. They don't check compressors on the maintenance calls anyways. They check Freon, coil & belts. Very dissatisfied. Will not recommend Trane anymore. Also worked for a Trane Dealer in the area for 21 years. What comes around goes around.

Is this a universal problem with this unit? It is supposed to be the Mercedes of heat pumps.

02/29/2012 $986...replaced coils
08/13/2012 $84...cleaned drain line again

04/15/2014 $84...cleaned drain line again
03/04/2015 $174...added Freon; cleaned drain line
Unit is still not repaired. This week I will have a HUGE repair bill...been suggested from $400 to actually having to replace the unit!!! What a lemon this has been. I had a previous Trane that lasted for years. Either the Trane is inferior now or the repairmen are rip-offs. I am sick...I could just cry. We don't have the money to spend on this unit. Something is wrong, and Trane does not care! I will know this week what it will cost, and I am very upset. I would not recommend Trane to anyone!!!

We have a "top of the line" variable speed high efficiency Trane natural gas furnace. It is now 14 years old, but apparently nearing the end of its life. So much for the 20-year life expectancy we were told to expect when we bought it. We had to have the inducer motor assembly replaced twice within the first year of ownership - at least that was covered under warranty. 13 years later, we have had to replace the blower motor assembly in December 2014 for $800, parts and labor.
Now, in March 2015, we have to have the inducer motor assembly replaced again at a cost of $900.00, parts and labor. The local HVAC service technician was able to get it running temporarily - bad bearings - while they order the part. It's been a brutally cold winter here in the northeast, so the furnace has gotten a work-out. We will be pricing new furnaces this summer - and we will not be buying a Trane. When the furnace works, we have been happy with the variable speed functionality. But the endurance has been very disappointing, especially since it was such an expensive furnace to begin with.

When I bought my house it still had the original Trane unit and it lasted 10 more years. That means it lasted 25 years. Naturally I thought I could trust them again for a quality product. I got the xr13 heat pump and hyperion air handler. From the beginning the air handler has been blowing massive amount of air out. The installer tried to get Trane to help but they said it was normal. It felt like an air blower coming out of the unit. That is not normal. The installer said lots of customers had similar complaints about that product. Now my fan on the condenser won't work after only 8 months. Trane doesn't stand by their product anymore and they make junk. Do yourself a favor and buy anything else.

We purchased our new construction house in 2012. After a year on the market, neither the builder nor the dealer informed us of the need to register the Trane unit within 60 days. We did not know of this requirement until it failed on 2/24/2015, in the middle of snow and freezing weather. We were told the blower motor had locked up and it should be covered under warranty. Trane denied the claim, saying it was only a 1 year warranty.
In looking at the documentation, I found Trane document #**, the 2012 warranty document (effective 8/1/11) which says unregistered warranty period for the 4TEC model is 5 years and registered is 10 years. My dealer told me I was wrong and I could contact Trane so I did (and I'm changing dealers, needless to say). They also said I was wrong, and sent me Trane document #**, the 2011 warranty document (also effective 8/1/11???) that says it is 1 year unregistered and 5 years registered.
I have many problems with this. As I understand it, our unit was installed in November 2011, so shouldn't the newest document (2012 warranty document (effective 8/1/11)) apply? How are they both effective on the same date? And what kind of product are they selling (for tens of thousands of dollars) that only warrants a 1 year warranty? How do you go from a 1 year warranty to a five year warranty for one year and then back to a 1 year warranty?
My dealer said they stopped installing them when they found out it was a one year warranty, but that doesn't help me any. It's time for all states, not just California, to make it illegal for these companies to require registration for warranties to be in effect. The heat won't be fixed for at least a week (did I mention the freezing cold and snowstorms?) and I'm out $1200 on a unit that's less than 5 years old. That's a crime.

Presently the unhappy owner of a Trane XE 90 - which was reported to be the best available by several dealers at the time of purchase. Over a period of the most recent 6 years this Trane unit has consumed $2,061.50 in parts and labor costs which consisted of a blower motor, four control boards, a flame rollout switch, a heat exchanger, a new thermostat and, just yesterday, $339 for the (20 minutes actual labor time) replacement of a $29.72 igniter. The control board was constantly being diagnosed, by Trane service representatives, as the problem with erratic heat and blower start up. After the third control board replacement, I contacted the White Rodgers Engineer that designed the board and he arrived our home, removed the board, installed a new one then took two of the old boards to their lab. Findings were that there is something else going on with the furnace so they contacted Trane.
Trane sent their service representative to check our furnace out - after which a new heat exchanger was installed along with a flame rollout switch. The furnace has not run right for 6 years now and just yesterday it quit igniting. The local Trane repair service charged me $75 for a part that was priced by an internet retailer at $29.72. The labor cost was $309.28 for the technician who arrived at 3:50 p.m. and was out of our driveway at 4:15 p.m. Needless to say, this is $742.27 per hour which is 3.7 times the hourly cost of the surgeon that did my triple heart bypass surgery. I agree that Trane, and their service network, are probably the poorest example of product reliability and service on the U.S. market. I am of the belief that Trane owners are victims of being sold a bad product that technicians can not properly repair and Trane should be held accountable to their product owners as defendant in a class action law suit.

The heat pump was an XL14i and the Train Air Handler was an innovation system that was going to be like a breath of fresh air with variable-speed control. Both systems promised very high tech features, to include quiet, high efficiency, durable, clean air, first rate warranties, and reliability -- do this words sound familiar. These are the features that were promised to my wife and me.
Now, I have a piece of junk and I will never recommend to anyone to buy a Trane or Standard AC unit. Now, the Trane certified service agent states that my units cannot be matched and I have to live with the problem and they will keep charging me for the visits because Trane/Standard Extended Warranty will not cover it. In early July 2014 I had a Trane XV18 Heat Pump, Air Handler and TZone950 thermostat installed in our home. I thought I was purchasing a premium heating/cooling system. I was soon to be proven wrong. When the system was installed we discovered it was DOA (Dead On Arrival). The main circuit-breaker was defective and the system could not be turned on. Two days later the Contractor received a replacement circuit-breaker, installed it and the Heat Pump was operational. Soon after, I discovered one of the panels on the Air Handler was warped. Not only was it cosmetically wrong, it was leaking air. A photograph of the original panel is shown below. The Contractor repeatedly called Trane requesting a replacement panel and was assured that the panel would be shipped soon. This did not prove to be the case and I decided to get involved.
After extensive searching on the internet and several telephone calls, I succeeded in reaching the "Trane Escalation Center" in Saint Louis, MO. Within a week the Contractor received a replacement panel. One problem - when they came to our home to install it, it proved to be the wrong part! More telephone calls ensued and a replacement panel was eventually received. The Contractor came to our home and installed it. It proved the same, if not worse than the original. Eventually a repair kit was received by the Contractor. The so-called repair kit proved to be two metal clips in a padded envelope. No instructions and no indication how they were to be installed. The HVAC technician spent about three hours and finally figured out how to install one clip. Evidently, that was all that was required. The installed clip looks as if it's a "quick-fix", not something that would be part of a normal installation. In fact, the Air Handler installation guide makes no mention of such a clip to be installed, leading me to believe that it was a "make-do" repair to work around a defective design.
At this point the Heat Pump system appeared to be working correctly. However, I discovered a problem with the TZone 950 thermostat and the Contractor replaced it. That was not the end of my troubles with the thermostat. One of the features of this thermostat was the ability to install photograph images to be used as a screen saver. They as I might I could not get the images to install. The Contractor told me all sorts of reasons I couldn't get the photographs to load. All of those reasons proved to be incorrect. At that point the Trane Escalation Center provided me with contact information on how to contact Trane engineering in Tyler, TX. I corresponded with the engineer there and then ended up doing my own investigation on what might be the problem with the thermostat. (I am an electrical engineer.)
I came to the conclusion that the problem with the photographic images was that, since they originated with a Macintosh computer the image format was incompatible with the thermostat software. In other words, to use the photo feature in the TZone 950 thermostat one must use a PC. I provided my information to the engineer in Texas. After several weeks he replied that my analysis was most likely correct but that they were too busy to address the issue at this time. Additionally, while all this was going on I attempted to reach the President of Trane, Gary S. Michel, in Davidson, NC. I wrote him a letter and never received a reply. Recently, in desperation I wrote a letter to Mike Lamach, the CEO of Ingersoll-Rand, in Dublin, Ireland. Again,(Ingersoll-Rand is the parent company to Trane.) I have not received a reply to that letter either.
In studying the TZone 950 thermostat these past months I've compiled a list of the shortcomings of this very expensive thermostat that the October 2014 issue of "Consumer Reports" gives an outstanding review. I can't help but wonder if they even spent any time examining this thermostat. The List is shown below. TZone 950 Issues:

Even though the heat exchanger has a lifetime warranty, it will not be honored by Trane because that piece for my model is discontinued. As a result, they will only offer a credit of $360 for that towards a new Trane furnace. For a piece that is the heart and soul of the machine, that amount of credit is simply laughable since it would cost a lot more than that if purchased out in the market. We had always had it serviced by the company that installed it but they were now out of business. I went to the Trane website and got the name of another authorized dealer. They came and serviced it, noted the leak and told us that they knew right where to look as this is very common for these to leak in one certain spot of the coils. They said they would charge it and work with Trane to get the issue fixed. The next year we had to call them back as it was low and needed charged again.
They checked the unit and called Trane to get the unit fixed under warranty. They needed to send a copy of the install invoice to Trane so we gave them a copy. Trane responded by denying the warranty because the installer did not state that the coils were covered by the ten year warranty on the invoice. Every brochure they put out including the one that we had with the invoice in our file clearly states that the coils are covered for ten years. If they had fixed it the year before rather than simply charging it (it was less than five years) it would have been covered but they said it wasn't leaking enough to qualify. We called Trane directly many times to try to make them cover the unit under warranty but they really don't care about customer satisfaction and didn't want to be bothered. It took 90 minutes and I was charged $1055.48 which included refrigerant. Shouldn't refrigerant be part of the parts? I asked why so much and they said this was a standard fee for this work. Its amazing Trane uses such cheap copper tubing or makes such poor connections so that it fails within a few years. It's even more amazing HVAC companies can charge almost $500 per hour for repairs. Top lawyers don't make that much.

We had a new Trane XL14c rooftop system installed a couple months ago. It is very efficient compared to our 20-year-old system which had to go. Our electric bills over the summer months have been about $100 lower per month. It has a variable speed fan which ramps up quietly after the compressor starts up and ramps down at the end of the cycle. My only complaint to date is the start-up noise of the compressor. It is very loud when it starts up. I've called the installer and had them come back out - they say it's normal. It can't possibly be normal with a brand new system, especially if it wakes you up every time it starts up. This is a design flaw in my opinion.

Trane xl15i installed spring 2011. 3 years only, and tubing in the outdoor evap cool has worn through from rubbing on another tube. This is an obvious design flaw, and I've talked with three installers who know about it causing failures. Yet Trane will only provide the specific piece that failed (coil), while I have to pay the labor of $1340. That's a substantial portion of the original cost, installed. It's the hottest, most humid time of the year, and I have to wait for 10 days or more for the part (not in stock), then pay the labor. Outrageous!!! Trane customer rep says that is all they are required to do, and offers nothing else. The full outdoor unit is available immediately, and the service labor cost is far lower (probably less than $600). Why should I pay anything for repairing an obvious design flaw (I'm a reliability engineer)? Man-up Trane, and do the right thing by replacing the outdoor unit immediately. You are making me pay the highest amount possible, and wait in discomfort, for a failure on your part. No more Tranes for me, unless this is handled properly and fairly!

OK... purchased new Trane HVAC with CleanEffects Air Cleaner in November 2011. In July 2012, returned from vacation to find that fan had quit working. Fixed in 2 days. In July 2014, the CleanEffects quit working - diagnosed as a bad door which contains the electronics. Waited 2 weeks for part. Called installer who said the Trane was having a problem supplying the part as they had changed to a new company to manufacture the units and parts for the CleanEffects. Installer said that he was trying to get local distributor to provide the door from a unit in stock but to date that has not been accomplished.
I sent email to Trane and received response stating that they hoped to have backlog of parts orders caught up by mid-August 2014. My concern and disappointment with Trane stems from the fact that the company and its distributors appear quite ready to sell CleanEffects units on hand knowing full well they cannot support the product and are at the same time ignoring needs of current owners of the units. Trane seems to have a problem maintaining parts' inventories for their products. I would certainly advise anyone to steer clear of buying the CleanEffects air cleaner as I'm not convinced that it does much of anything when it does "work".

This is the reason I chose Trane for my heating and cooling comfort. Both my units worked perfectly for about 8 years. When the furnace would stop, but blower would run in the winter, my Trane repairman blamed the control board and the blower motor which were quite costly. The second service expert found it was the limit sensor, and suggested the control board that I said I had it replaced. Three winters of blowing air with no heat unpredictably the third repair guy, replaced the temperature limit and suggested my under floor vents were the issue. It comes down to that my Trane Furnace XE-90 only works properly when the weather is mild and heat isn't really needed. Advice to Trane furnace owners to look up the control panel light flash indicator's meaning, it can tell you how many flashes you see represent the problem supposedly. Additionally watching the Trane tech, there is a way to have the front panels off while the unit works (Be safe about electricity at this point.) There is a trigger button on the top left that can be taped down with electrical tape. I can't afford to have repairmen around, or replace it all. The A/C went too, still working on that one.

Coil is covered by TRANE but the $700 in labor was not they said. Good luck calling them, they said sarcastically. This unit is only 2.5 years old. Called TRANE customer care 2 days ago. Today they called me back, and advised me they would pay part (most) of the labor for me. Their limited warranty does not force them to do anything but replace the coil. I've only owned TRANE in any home I chose air conditioning. Everyone's brand has issues. Things are not perfect. Even the best can break. They stepped up and made it right. We bought our Trane unit about 6 years ago... First, let me start by saying that Trane's slogan "Nothing runs like a Trane" is accurate! Although, a bit misleading because this thing runs worse than anything we've had previously! First, the compressor went out a year after install, charged for freon and told it was a defect... Trane still fought me on trying to charge for the compressor! Next, thermal switch went out, was told we don't change our filters enough... What, twice a month ain't good enough for a freakin' Trane?!? Now, we've got clogging in the Condensation drain system... Enough condensation to flood my son's bedroom!
Reason for the clog: Reduced ID on the drain tube and a negative gravity feed which collects sludge and clogs. Don't know what school of thought these guys have, but honestly would it hurt to have a free flowing drain system under the tray? Instead of relying on these bozos, I'm going to just retube the entire drain tray and fix their crap right. When you're looking for an A/C unit, look here, look there, look everywhere but stay the heck away from Trane! They're bad news, problematic and worthless!

When the unit was 2.5 years old, the compressor went out. I had to pay for the service call, Freon and incidentals. Last year, the unit had issues during the winter. A leak developed causing the heat pump to quit working and all heat came from auxiliary heat strips. My electric bill soared to $1,100.00 while the former highest bill had been $400.00. I have lived in this house for 9.5 years and know what to expect for electric bills. The service technicians made five visits before supposedly repairing the problem. I was billed $1,800.00 for these visits. Each time they came out, Freon was added and charged to the bill without ever fixing the leak.
Now this winter, I have the same problem. I suspected that there was an issue (the unit was running on heat strips a lot more frequently) so I called for service. The tech said everything was operating as it should. I paid the $80.00 fee but was not satisfied with his findings. I contacted a different company for a second opinion. They too said everything was working fine. Less than a week later, I awoke to a 7 degree difference between thermostat and room temp. I called them back out and they said it was the thermostat. $150.00 was the charge for this visit. Two and one half days later, the same thing occurred. This time they checked the Freon and found it to be low. Four pounds were added (more money) but the tech said he would have to come back to try to find the leak. That was last Monday. I am anxiously awaiting to hear what the problem is this time.
I am at their mercy. The unit still has four years warranty remaining on all parts but I cannot keep putting money into this lemon. If anyone knows of any recourse to Trane, please advise. I have spent over $3,000.00 in service calls, repair costs and added utility costs because of this unit.

Moved into our new home and had a new Trane HVAC System installed two-years-ago. About a week ago, my wife and I noticed that the heater began making a rumbling noise when starting. A couple of days later, the rumbling startup noise grew worse and became a constant loud noise resembling "a playing card in bike spokes". We called the authorized Trane servicer who installed the unit in our home. The technician told us that the Blower Wheel broke away from the hub and needed to be replaced. The technician told us that we would be responsible for troubleshooting and labor cost to replace the part.
After reviewing the Trane "limited warranty"; it is just that, very limited coverage for their obvious unreliable product. I've owned several homes in my lifetime and never experienced a near new unit fail in such a short time. This is not the time have our heater breakdown when a historical cold front (single digits) is on us. The Trane model for this issue is 4TGB3F48A1000AA. After reading about similar failures to others, we are researching to locate a more reliable product and company.
