I highly recommend not purchasing any Trane heat/air. Compressor went out in 4 yrs. Compressor under warranty but not freon or labor. 2 Yrs and now coils leaking freon. Trane seems to not be concerned about their quality of product. We had units in the past that worked for over 20 years. We strongly regret purchasing this product. Very false advertising, also. Hope you folks pay attention to all the complaints. They are real.

After purchasing a new home built by a local builder, we learned 65 days after closing, that our Trane units were not registered and should have been registered within 60 days of closing. Trane refuses to make any exception to their timeline and now we are left with warranties that have been cut from 10 years to 5 years. The builder nor the Trane dealer informed us of the 60 day requirement and our appeals to Trane have fallen on deaf ears! Do not buy Trane products or American Standard because they are very inflexible with their "customers" and totally unwilling to work with customers.

Trane 3 Ton XL19i - We purchased this unit about 6 years ago for almost $8000.00. A year ago, it stopped cooling and the A/C dealer came out and put Freon in the system for $400.00. He stated there was a leak but that their labor was out of warranty. Last February, the system stopped cooling. The ac dealer came out and replaced the coil. Equipment was under warranty but not the labor. That cost $1200.00. Last month, the system stopped working and the ac dealer stated that the inside coil needed to be replaced for $650.00. I suppose the definition of insanity is doing the same thing over and over again and expecting a different result. I would never buy a Trane Product or use this incompetent dealer. Trane produces inferior equipment and relies on incompetent dealers to basically scam customers.

We installed two Trane XLi20 units five years ago. The first floor unit has performed flawlessly. The second floor air handler was replaced within two months, followed by over 20 service visits by our local Trane installer (who has been great throughout). Since the local distributor has not been able to solve the recurrent coiling failure issues and Trane has not offered to replace the compressor, even though the problem almost always seems to be low refrigerant pressure, our installer has offered to install a comparable new Lennox system for free. Trane has been non-responsive to consumers for such a long time that I cannot believe they can still survive in this business. Never again. Has anyone started a class action against Trane? I'd love to join in.

We purchased a Trane Central Air Conditioner unit through Home Depot back in May 2007. Carrano Air in Dayton NJ was hired to install our unit. Initially their sales rep pitched how great this system was and it was backed by a 10 year warranty on internal functional parts when we installed the entire unit. Unfortunately 7 years later our central air system no longer works. We've been told that our central air unit had a unique problem and it will cost us $1600 to repair. When we explained to the air conditioning company we had a 10 year warranty based on the paperwork provided by the Carrano salesperson several years ago, the service manager said; "sorry the 10 year warranty is only applicable had you bought and installed the XL I unit at the same time." We installed the XR14 which meant our 6 Way Convertible Air Handlers warranty was no longer valid.

The end result is the sales representative from the air conditioning company did not accurately disclose the correct warranty information regarding our Trane Central Air Conditioner Unit. Needless to say, we are very disappointed with the poor quality of this Trane unit and the misleading information provided by the air conditioning company that installed it.

Custom built my home in 2008 and had 3 Trane heat pumps installed. Within 3 years 2 evaporator coils leaked. Trane replaced parts but not labor or Freon. One year later one of the same coils started leaking and needed to be replaced. Trane refused to supply parts but agreed to a cash settlement. Two months ago the other unit’s evaporator coil started leaking plus the coil that was previously leaking and replaced started leaking again.

Trane refused to honor anything at first but after much pursuing on my part agreed to a one-time cash payment of $1200. I decided to spend $ to replace the entire two air handlers rather than just the evap coil. Since there was no conditions in the Trane $1200 offer I replaced the handlers with a different manufacturer. Trane refused to supply the parts. Now they rescinded their $1200 because I replaced everything not just the coil. Makes no sense to me.

My 35 year old Rheem system finally bit it in 9-2008. I called around for 10+ quotes for a new heat pump system and the contractor I chose Installed a new 4 ton Trane heat pump system. My first repair call was less than a week after install. Less than a year later, there had been around 10 service calls and the installer refused to make any more calls because he was losing so much money. I found another Heat/AC company and he has been outstanding in his work, but I have not made it 3 months without some kind of system parts failure.

Now the warranty is out (5 years) and the compressor is bad. Shopping around and I find out it will be the same cost for the repairs as it will to replace system. So far in 5 1/2 years, I have spent around $5000 in parts and service calls for a $4000 system. Trane will not return calls or answer my emails. Needless to say, I will not be buying a new Trane...

I purchased a Trane Total Home Comfort System (XV95 gas furnace and XL15i air conditioner 4 ton capacity) in June 2009. The cost was $8,500.00. I thought Trane was a good unit. I had a Lennox builders grade and it was 15 years old and thought I better replace it since it was going to cost me $400.00 to repair because "ants got into a part". Well, 4 seasons later the air is not working and the repairman told me there is a leak in the "A" Coil. I told the repairman I always heard if something goes wrong with the "A" Coil you need to replace the unit. He said he usually recommends this and it would be over $4000 but since the unit is not even 5 years old he said to just replace the A" Coil. The part is under warranty but the labor would be $1200. Good grief!!! This must be a very difficult repair since it costs $1200 to fix. I thought I was buying a good product but now I know not to recommend Trane to anyone. I guess I better hope the furnace works this winter.

Now at the current time, I am waiting on a new circuit board that goes on the fan motor. The parts are under warranty for 2 more years, but I am STILL having to pay for the labor which IS NOT cheap. But I SHOULDN'T have all this trouble with a $5000 product that is ONLY 8 years old. Moral of the story is: DO NOT buy a Trane! Years ago they were a good product but NOW they SUCK! Had a new Trane heat pump system installed in May of 2013. The system worked well until winter came. My first bill in Dec was $294. My second bill was $387, third bill was $528. I first thought the company that installed the system had underrated the size system I needed, so I called them. They came right out, & discovered the filter drier had not been installed properly & I was told it was a factory defect. I called Trane & attempted to get them to pay me for my loss due to their factor to stalled defective filter drier. After being in contact with 3 different customer care personnel & sending them previous years' bills, I was told they don't pay customers heat bills. After several communications back & forth. They told me they would send me a check for $200. I responded that I wasn't looking for welfare & evidently they needed money more than I did.

After that, I sent 2 emails to the CEO of the heat pump division with absolutely no response. I have used Trane systems for 20+ yrs because of their quality, but evidently their responsibility ends with repair of the defect. They assume no responsibility for cost incurred by the consumer. The people who sold me the unit & repaired the unit were great. I can't say the same for the producers of the unit!

We had a new Trane AC installed in 2011. The install was a disaster. A second crew had to come out and redo what first crew did wrong. They ripped open a wall, flooded out garage by breaking a pipe, and we have had countless problems with AC unit. Firstly, the unit is so loud we can't hear the TV over it, or talk on phone while it's running. It makes a loud click noise before it goes on and the decibel level raises by 17 points when running. The unit is generating mildew, coming through the vents. The plastic housing is covered in mildew when it's removed. Trane has already replaced 3 motors on this unit. They refuse to pay labor, or have the noise level or mildew addressed. There has been no customer service to help. We absolutely hate this AC unit. It's a nightmare and has made our home unbearable.

Purchased new Trane unit model # XL20i September 2009 and followed all guidelines for maintenance with same vendor who installed unit. Starting December 4, 2013 we lost our cooling. Diagnosis in February 11, 2014 proved both coils to be defective and in need of replacement along with the dryer and another part. At the time of diagnosis, we found we had a full coverage parts and labor policy in place through Home Depot. We have been waiting since that time without any air conditioning as they claim Trane does not have parts and they need to ship from the factory.

As of March 19, 2014 we still have no air, no word on part availability other than it needs to ship from Trane soon (not sure when that will be). Home Depot did offer to sell us a window unit to buy time and they stated they would take it back. The Home Depot rep that we have been dealing with makes it sound like he is trying to help and I can only hope he is, but the results still appear bleak as of now. Our HOA does not allow window units, so we endure no A/C and no answers from anyone. I asked Home Depot to remove our unit and refund our money so I could get a reliable unit from somewhere else or for them to remove and exchange our unit for a new one - both those offers were rejected by Home Depot.

I feel that neither Trane nor Home Depot are able to deliver any type of quality service. Trane was sold as the top-of-the-line "Communicating" model with no equals as well as the highest SEER rating. Why the whole unit is falling apart after only 4(+) years of use is very troubling for me. The flagship unit of a manufacturer is supposed to perform like no others and something to be proud of. We are extremely sorry that we even purchased this unit.

I am a HVAC contractor having installed Trane and American standard units for many years. So 3.5 years ago (this was the year they switched over from R-22 to R410A refrigerant... R410A is a much higher pressure refrigerant!) we installed a new Trane 2 circuit 10 ton condenser and air handler to cool a server room located in a 4 story building. After 13 months of operation the unit sprung a leak.. Trane said 1 year warranty was over so we repaired the leak, no charge to the customer. 2 years later another leak in a different brazing joint. 3 years later two more leaks on separate circuits and again on different brazing joints.. 3.5 years another leak...

Finally customer had enough of their servers shutting down in emergency mode causing damage and customer loss.. We lost complete trust in the ability of this unit to hold a refrigerant charge. I stepped in again and installed a complete new condensing unit, crane rental, spot cooler rentals and all.... "Thousands of dollars later" I demanded Trane reimburse the cost of the new condenser and I would handle all other cost and rentals, they declined! The 10 ton "Lemon" is stored in the back of my shop at the moment (in case I need it for proof). Needless to say I have ended all sales of Trane and American Standard.

New home built in 2007 new Trane furnace installed. Wrong from install, noted by the service technician during a routine maintenance check and trying to fix a water leak coming from side of furnace. Charged me $187.95 and still that night the water leak continued. The next day 3 other techs came and tried to diagnose the problem. A roll of duct tape and lots of PVC piping later, the leak finally stopped after making my new furnace look laughable. Now we have rust issues caused from the water leak causing parts and switches to degrade and corrode.

Needing a $20 part replaced the same reputable Trane dealer would like to charge $278 plus tax for something their bad install job caused to go out. After explaining that I feel the part was damaged because of the water leak that developed from a bad install and should be replaced at no charge, they told me I should just buy the part and replace myself. I said I'm not going to do that and they told me they are wiping their hands clean of me and walking away from my situation.

I tried to call Trane and they hung up on me. I tried sending email and they tell me they're free to charge whatever they'd like to charge me as they are independent dealer. They do not want to understand that these problems are because of either a bad product or simply the bad install the tech admitted to. I will never own another Trane product during my lifetime. Horrible customer service and worse product. You can see from my photos the install job they did to my Trane furnace and the rust that has developed. Trane Heat Pump Model 63256PF1F - I had this unit installed in the Winter of 2008 and have had 10 service calls on it during that time frame. Number 11 will be done this week. When the unit was 2.5 years old, the compressor went out. I had to pay for the service call, Freon and incidentals. Last year, the unit had issues during the winter. A leak developed causing the heat pump to quit working and all heat came from auxiliary heat strips. My electric bill soared to $1,100.00 while the former highest bill had been $400.00. I have lived in this house for 9.5 years and know what to expect for electric bills. The service technicians made five visits before supposedly repairing the problem. I was billed $1,800.00 for these visits. Each time they came out, Freon was added and charged to the bill without ever fixing the leak.

Now this winter, I have the same problem. I suspected that there was an issue (the unit was running on heat strips a lot more frequently) so I called for service. The tech said everything was operating as it should. I paid the $80.00 fee but was not satisfied with his findings. I contacted a different company for a second opinion. They too said everything was working fine. Less than a week later, I awoke to a 7 degree difference between thermostat and room temp. I called them back out and they said it was the thermostat. $150.00 was the charge for this visit. Two and one half days later, the same thing occurred. This time they checked the Freon and found it to be low. Four pounds were added (more money) but the tech said he would have to come back to try to find the leak. That was last Monday. I am anxiously awaiting to hear what the problem is this time.

I am at their mercy. The unit still has four years warranty remaining on all parts but I cannot keep putting money into this lemon. If anyone knows of any recourse to Trane, please advise. I have spent over $3,000.00 in service calls, repair costs and added utility costs because of this unit.

Moved into our new home and had a new Trane HVAC System installed two-years-ago. About a week ago, my wife and I noticed that the heater began making a rumbling noise when starting. A couple of days later, the rumbling startup noise grew worse and became a constant loud noise resembling "a playing card in bike spokes". We called the authorized Trane servicer who installed the unit in our home. The technician told us that the Blower Wheel broke away from the hub and needed to be replaced. The technician told us that we would be responsible for troubleshooting and labor cost to replace the part.

After reviewing the Trane "limited warranty"; it is just that, very limited coverage for their obvious unreliable product. I've owned several homes in my lifetime and never experienced a near new unit fail in such a short time. This is not the time have our heater breakdown when a historical cold front (single digits) is on us. The Trane model for this issue is 4TGB3F48A1000AA. The original blower wheel installed in model 4TGB3F48A1000AA Furnace Air Handler is inappropriate. In my estimation, it was designed to fail. In my case, it failed just after 4 years of service. The notched blade design is not compatible with a direct drive system. The amount of overlapping material of the blade relative to the dual center drive disks is not sufficient to withstand the rotary forces placed on them by the motor. A solid blade design would be the best option. I would suspect that others have had the same issue. The seasonal HVAC tech who performs bi-annual service noted that he was very familiar with the sound this particular blower wheel prior to failure. As it stands, this item is not covered by any warranty and supposedly can only be installed by a licensed Trane technician for approx. $500.

Failure in this case equals the dual center drive disk slipping out of its original position. Each fan blade skips out of its designated slot allowing the drive disk to rotate irrespective of the fan assembly. DIYers will be happy to know this can be replaced for less than $70 without any special tools. Just match the blower wheel attributes to those listed on Emotorstore.com

My old Trane was 15 yrs old. I never had a problem with it. Age finally killed it. What are they doing to these newer outfits? I'm ready to sign on the dotted line for action. Bought a new Trane with a 10-year warranty, thank god, every year we went to start the unit. It has failed inducer motor 3 times circuit board, replaced heat exchanger cracked and replaced everything is new but the outer case. Here it is 27 tonight and guess what, no heat and the warranty is out. Is there any kind of lemon law on this unit? Also AC went out 2 times. The people who installed the unit are great. They came right out and fixed the unit, got me up and running but now that the 10-year-warranty is over, I don't have the money to call for service. Anyone have suggestion? Junk it and get a Carrier, had one in my old house. Never had a problem ever. My dad has one at the cabin. He put in in 06, it works great, never a problem.

TRANE 5TON 13 SEER - My unit stopped blowing air on Friday 9-5-2013. I checked the low voltage, relays and fuses---all ok. Purchased all new capacitors and replaced them. Fan will not operate. I called a consultant for Trane who is an actual dealer/installer and he said the DC drive board for the motor is most likely the culprit; however, you need a $3000.00 piece of diagnostic equipment to check it. I called Trane customer service and asked them if they would help with the offset of some of the cost for the board, $600.00+ range. The rep on the other end acted like I was an idiot and I could not possibly come to the conclusion where that could be the problem. I explained to her that I am a certified military, DOE, DOD, aerospace contractor who build parts & components from my own designs along with designing and building robotics, CNC and laser systems so I think I know just a little about electronics and drive systems to be able to diagnose a problem by the process of elimination.

This unit cost over $16,000.00 and the warranty had just run out. The funny thing is I called the installing dealer about an extended service plan last year and their quote was $700.00 for an additional 9 months. So I still would be out of warranty! Needless to say Trane has outright refused to offer any assistance and I refuse to ever purchase any product from them or their other brands. I purchased a Neptune washer and dryer from Maytag when they 1st came out in the late 90s. The bearing in the drum went bad and they sold me the whole drum assembly for $161.00 which retailed for $560.00.

I was not asking Trane for a free replacement, just some kind of discount. But I see after reading all the complaints hear it was a wasted $16,000.00, time and phone call. I just don't think things should break if the engineering is done correctly and in the event that they do companies should be a lot more attentive to their customers to retain them.

This is all adding up to service fees and shouldn't be happening with a fairly new system. It's got to be a lemon parts that Trane is making!!! Never buying Trane again. Repair persons came and had to weld defective joints in several places. Now the units are not cooling again and apparently the joints are detaching again - leaking freon into the atmosphere again. We have a unit that was installed in 2005 to cool one section of our home by the prior owners and since buying the home in 2012, the unit has been weak but never failed to cool, just took a long time. As the home is large and has a large 2 story foyer, we thought it was the physics of cooling a space that was too large for the HVAC alignment in the home. Well, finally it stopped cooling a couple of days ago and..... it needs a new valve and new coil. Valve is leaking oil and we cannot adequately gauge how much oil is left in the coil so that may have to be replaced as well and at less than 8 years of age, that is really ridiculous - 3200 on a unit that is less than 8 yrs old and cost 7500 new. Most cars are better than this! Of course, not covered by the sham of a warranty they offer (allegedly 10 years but really just 5 years on almost anything that costs money to repair), and their service line was a complete joke.

We went with a local, and reputable, HVAC company and the tech we got to come out said he was shocked how quickly the unit failed. After reading all the reviews on here, I am not shocked at all - Trane makes junk products and does not back them up with adequate warranties. Bottom line - we will be purchasing a Lennox or other brand unit next time. Trane will not be getting any patronage from our home again. Fortunately for our neighbors, they heard our troubles and cancelled an order with Home Depot for 4 Trane units and bought another brand. They are thankful we shared this information with them. If I have it my way, our whole neighborhood will avoid Trane.

The same company that installed it, sent a service man out to check it and he had to add 5lbs of Freon, charge a service call and took 1.5 hrs looking for a leak and decided that there was none to be found. On 7/10/2013 the unit quit cooling again. I called a different professional, it did not take him 10 min. to find the leak, as the coils are rusty, rusty, rusty. He had to add 3lbs of Freon. Trane warranties the parts but not the labor, which is costing us a fortune ($1,750 so far). But now that the warranty just ran out, I am certain our costs will just escalate. The first failure was due to valve core failures just before the warranty ran out. The technician charged us $1,170 for diagnostics, evacuating the system, reclaiming the refrigerant, installing the drier and recharging the refrigerant (the valve cores were under warranty).

The second failure cost $800. The technician confirmed the air conditioning was not cooling and determined the unit had defective thermal expansion valves. The unit was repaired but failed again approximately one month later. We are currently waiting on service and hate to see what our bill is going to be this time around. I agree with all of the other complaints. Trane should provide a replacement system for our losses, time wasted and aggravation. The air conditioner is XL14i and the gas heater is unit XV90. Since then we have spent well over $2000 in labor costs to keep the unit running. The control board was replaced twice, once in June 2012 and again in March 2013. We came to learn this was due to a design flaw. We have had switches and contacts replaced several times, and are now in the process of having to have the coils replaced. Each time we have had to pay labor costs. We went to Trane and asked for reimbursement of labor for the control boards since it was an obvious design flaw. The same is true of the coils now being replaced. We were flatly turned down the first time, and I am sure we will be turned down again.

I have no problem paying labor costs for a part that wears out, but when the problem is design the company should be liable. Take my advice. NEVER buy a Trane. It is a piece of garbage. We have spent several days last summer and this summer with no AC, and this past winter when the heat didn't work because of the control board issue. Fifty eight degrees is not a comfortable temperature in your house. I am angry and disgusted that a company that advertises "you can't stop a Trane" is so poor at standing behind their product.

We bought a Trane Heat Pump and new furnace in February 2011. In November 2012 the unit shut down and we found out it had a leak and had lost all 410A. The leak was in the copper joint inside of unit so they brazed it. We had to pay $169 to have 410A replaced even though I thought it was very unfair that we should have to pay anything since it was a factory defect. Well, here we are 7 months later and we have another leak. They are having trouble finding it and had put dye in it to try to locate the leak. Two days later and the dye still doesn't show where the leak is so we have to wait another 5 days to let it circulate more.

Of course it is 90 degrees here right now so the unit runs almost all day, so I would think the dye should have circulated. They have had to put in another 2 lbs. 410A and said they will give us a good price on it. Well, I say we shouldn't have to pay for it at all since we spent $7000 for all this 2 years ago. I guess maybe Trane is not real good at standing behind their products, so if they don't replace this unit we will be finding something different and we will be hiring an attorney to recoup our loss. All dates are estimated. Back in 2009, we had Vailes install a new Trane Heat Pump (outside unit and Air-handler in attic) along with all new flex duct work. After a full summer of running the unit - "the dirty-sock syndrome" smell came about in our upstairs. We called Vailes and they brought their Trane Rep, Ken **, out to investigate. He tweaked some of the duct work and airflow (speeds) on the air handler and also coated the coils so that it would not make that smell. He also "redesigned" the ramp so that water would not flow over the ramp...

Everything seemed okay - until we had a Mold specialist check out our entire house. He found Mold in the Trane air handler and in the duct work. He found no other issues with the house. We contacted Vailes and shared the Mold report with them. They came out and looked and took pictures to share with their Trane Rep (Ken ** out of Richmond). They came back with a solution of cleaning out the air handler for estimated $500.00 and installing a UV light for another $1,000.00. I replied back with the following request to Vailes:

"Our game plan is to counter with: to have a Trane Rep come out and look at the situation. Possible solutions: Air flow is set incorrectly (after talking with other large heating and cooling companies). Another red flag: Having 3-4 degree variances in rooms upstairs. Some rooms have an extreme blast of air flow (especially in the winter). Our home was inspected by a professional environmental technician and the house is clean. The only issue is the air-handler in the attic.

After discussing this situation further with my wife, father, Riddlebarger, and Landis Heating, they all suggested that Trane should come out and redo/check the air flow. They also think it could be a potential trunk issue as well. I was going to have my wife run with this but I don't want to add anything else to her plate. Will you please contact Trane again with our circumstance? We need to fix the issue and I would like for Trane to be there."

Vailes shared this request with Ken ** (Trane Rep in Richmond) and Ken replied back to me with the following:

"The mold that is growing in the home is a product of the environment that the equipment is in. The Trane (or any other brand equipment) does not produce the bacteria; it already exists in the structure. The effort that needs to be put in is to address the source of bacteria whether it is infiltrating form the crawlspace, attic, basement, windows, fireplace, sewer system, or from the people that live in the house. The bacteria growing in the AHU is happening because it is a nice environment for it to grow (warm and moist) depending on the season but it is not the source. There is nothing that Trane can do to address the structure or the infiltration to the home. Vailes has made some suggestions about accessories that can be added to a system to help manage the bacteria (UV lights, and electronic air filters); these may help reduce the potential for growth in the unit but the bacteria will still be in the home."

I was not satisfied with his response so I brought in several other HVAC dealers to analyze the situation. They have all pointed to the duct work and airflow. I could get another HVAC dealer to redo all the duct work but that puts me in a major financial crisis. I feel like they (Vailes and the Trane Rep) should have looked at the situation closer. Obviously, they knew something was wrong from the start when they coated the coils and redid the airflow and ramp shortly after it was installed. I feel like the coated coils only "masked" the issue. For some reason, we are getting mold in the air handler.

Any suggestions? One particular HVAC dealer said that he firmly thinks it is the duct work - because the duct work going to the returns are the biggest he has ever seen on a ton 1/2 unit. He also said there is no trunk line (all lines are coming straight out of the small boxes on the air handler...). Hearing from 4 other HVAC dealer that they think it is the duct work - tells me something. I am meeting with two other HVAC dealers this week as well to see what they think. But it is very disappointing having to go to other dealers to fix this problem. We turned the unit off once the mold was found (back in April). I have a wife and 4 children and need to place some urgency on this.

However, I had several repairs over the years and those were done satisfactorily through Sears. However, the last repair was the compressor. This was approx. one month prior to the warranty expiring. Unit was 10 years old. After struggling with Sears, the unit was finally repaired. However, now one year later, the compressor has now failed again. Since it is past my warranty, I am going to buy a new unit.

I had to go pick up my parts - I missed l/2 day of work with no pay to do this. They would not come to my house on Fridays which is my day off. The first visit, there was no repair. The second time they were scheduled to come, they did not show up. And the parts did not show up since I had to meet a truck to pick up my parts. It took me like two months and several calls to Sears to get this repair. When the tech finally came to my house, he was late, lost and there was a thunderstorm in the area (afraid of the bad weather); therefore he did the repair in a haste. All in all, it was a very annoying experience and cost me lost time from work, etc. I'm not sure if this complaint is against Sears or Trane, but they work in coordination so both companies are at fault.

I have given up and will buy a new unit from more competent companies. In the meantime, I suffer in the heat again this summer just like last summer.

In 2001, we built our house and went with top of the line Trane heat pumps, two of them. In 2004, hurricane Ivan came in and took our house. In 2005, we rebuilt and had the same units installed, Trane heat pumps with the UV filter system 14xl. Well in 2007, the 3.5-ton unit went out. We called the company that installed both units, Mooneyham Heating and Air in Milton, FL. They came out and told us the coil was no good and needed to be replaced. It would cost us $1,500. We told them it is under warranty. They said, “Let us check on that and we will get back to you.”

Well, several days go by and no call back, so I called them and they said, “Sorry for not getting back to you but we have been really slammed.” I told them, “Well, I would like to have A/C again.” It is 90 + outside. They told me that Trane would only cover the coil under warranty and we would have to pay the labor. I said, “Can I have their phone number?” So I called Trane in South Florida. After two days of the dog chasing its tail, they got back to me and told me over a 3-way call with Trane and Mooneyham that Trane would be paying parts and labor to Mooneyham. I said, “Great, when can I have my A/C back?” Well, that’s another issue. The coils are on backorder. I said, “What? It could take up to three weeks to get you one sent in the mail.” I told them that is not going to work, so I called our local district and they have one on the shelf, 6 miles from me.

So I called Trane back and told them there is one on the shelf at this place, call them and I will go and pick it up for Mooneyham. “We can’t do that, sir. It has to come from us.” I know the system is out again and they will not fix under the warranty agreement and the other unit just went out for the same thing. So I have two units not working and no A/C in 90+ weather. I guess their slogan is incorrect - "It's hard to stop a Trane." Well, everything I have seen on this form and other Trane units are junk and overpriced. It was our first and last and I will be turning this over to our lawyer.

I was a Trane dealer in the new home market. Profit on these jobs are minimal and are eaten up by problems with equipment warranty. I didn't have many problems with the R-22, 13 seer equipment. When I moved to R410a, we had several expansion valve failures. I had to eat the cost of replacing the part, which was mileage, travel time and labor. When my builder pushed me to sell the 15 seer Tranes with 410a refrigerant, hell broke loose. These indoor coils are very thin and are highly susceptible to formicary corrosion from drywall, carpet and various new home products.

Trane refused to acknowledge the problem and I replaced $28,000 worth of evaporator coils in 2012. I had to jump through hoops to prove the leaks existed in order to receive a warranty coil and was unable to get any assistance from Trane to recoup my expense to make things right with the customer. These coils would be a little over a year old typically, just out of labor warranty. Now most customers laughed at buying the extended labor warranty at installation and I could have charged for the labor to replace the coil. However, I don't have the mind of large corporations, so I would eat the cost to make it right by the customer. Trane quietly tried treating the coils to resolve the issue. Now they don't leak. Now they stink.

When I walked from Trane, I was being called out a lot on coils that would run you out of the house with "dirty sock syndrome." This is a problem that requires extensive work to remedy the problem. I had enough and walked away from Trane. Keep in mind this is in new modular homes. I can't say I had the same issues in older homes. Buy the extended warranty if you buy Trane. Labor costs of $900 to replace a coil or expansion valve are true when you think about everything that must be accomplished to accomplish the job. A variable speed motor or motor end change is several hundred dollars as well. One repair justifies a warranty and the annual service check cost. Remember that the guy fixing your unit isn't the guy who drove to Mexico and built it. It costs a lot of money to drive that mobile shop up and down the road to your house. The heat pump in your backyard works harder than anything you own. Take care of it.

Your elected government/party makes no difference, has dictated units to meet high efficiency standards. The units are more sophisticated than ever and costs are going up a lot faster than your pay raise. Be careful of the HVAC company you call to service your unit. Parts and equipment sales are the goal of a good number of companies - large or small. If you price shop for cheap, then you are cheap and get what you deserve. Now is the time to ask your co-workers and neighbors who they recommend, not when you are broken down, looking online for someone you know nothing about. If you find a company that treats you well, shout it from the rooftop. You may save a neighbor some anguish.

The Trane dealer who installed them points at Trane and says it is product quality problems. We lost confidence in the service from our installation Trane dealer and the new Trane dealer is much more honest and transparent to explain that these are manufacturing problems. This dealer's service people say the coils had manufacturing quality problems so Trane changed the material used in the coils and will not acknowledge this problem or face up to the problem with their customers. I have $2,500 of repairs on these Trane units and some house repairs as well.

I have written 2 lengthy letters (with all supporting repair bills to support the problems) in May 2012 and one just recently and received no response from Trane, except my wife's persistence reached a Trane employee by phone on the first letter and this employee said Trane would not do anything. I had a Trane Heating/AC unit installed about 8 years ago. I was never really happy with the performance, but that's another story. I've now been without A/C for over a week. Apparently, after days of research in my sweltering home, I found out that Trane uses variable speed motors (programable) from GE. These motors have 2 parts, the motor itself and a Module that controls it. The Module must match your unit so they are only available from Trane. The problem is the module uses what is called a Thermistor resistor (part#SG379). These resistors have a limited life span (think of a long lasting light bulb). They are designed to last about 10 years. They inevitably fail and when they do, you're looking at a $1000.00+ job to replace it. The module alone cost somewhere in the range of $400. Service Techs know only one way to fix this problem and that's to order a new module from Trane.

If you happen to be experienced in soldering components to a circuit board, the repair would cost about $23 for the part. Now I understand that things break after awhile, but Trane should provide a better way for this module to be repaired rather than replaced. Or at least offer a refurbished one. Trane isn't the only company that uses these motors, so do your research before buying. Also stick to a basic motor; I'm not sure what this variable speed bought me anyway.

These units have been nothing but trouble and have cost way too much in repairs. Do yourself a favor, DO NOT BUY A TRANE!

I purchased my home in 2010. The Trane AC was installed new in 2007. I have had issue after issue each and every year ironically at about the same time each year. I do not touch the unit. It is set for constant just about year round living in FL. First, it was a non-issue HVAC service call messed around with unit and said it was all under warranty - never got a real answer but the service call was $300. The second year it was the hi/low switch which cost me $300 in labor. Today, it is the blower again under warranty but labor costs are at $200. At this rate, I will have paid for this unit again before it should be time to replace it.

We have a three-level townhouse that is about 1500 square feet. We purchased the house in 1992, and it was about 10 years old. A York heat pump and heating and air system was on the unit and we had no issues with the unit... it worked like a charm. In 2007, we had collateral damage from an attached house's arson fire, and the unit inhaled so much smoke that State Farm Insurance allowed us to get a new unit. We trusted them and got a comparable Trane unit.

By the way, beware of State Farm and any insurance company, and make sure they aren't cutting corners with your home, car or anything else they insure... but that is another story. They might say they're a good neighbor... but they are a ginormous company with a lot of people to deal with, and many are less than desirable. Have a fire and a car accident with State Farm as your insurer, and see who your good neighbor isn't. Trane, however, is BAD PARTS and SERVICE. State Farm doesn't have manufactured parts. Buyers beware... we have had a heater or air major repair every season since the Trane was installed. We found out by going to the internet for known issues, and gave the model number and info we got from a very nice HVAC technician.

Trane installed crap parts that broke over and over in the same units until only threats of class action suits and so many furious customers made Trane change their part manufacturer on the TX Valve. If you got a Trane between 2000 and 2012, beware. These parts, especially the START CAPACITOR TX VALVE HEAT STRIP ELEMENTS - the bad TX valve failure will cause the freon to need replacement and a very expensive technician bill. A bunch of new homes in a development had to replace their TX Valves over and over and made such a fuss that Trane had to pay. We have had the unit 5 years, and we have had to lay out money for expensive parts and service every year and almost every season. And we will likely pay for the unit in repairs over and over and over if this continues. The installers and HVAC techs know these issues and they don't like it either.

Trane knows the bad parts, and they let consumers buy them over and over and let the installers take crap, and they make money replacing parts that should have been recalled and replaced by TRANE. The only thing that deflects that from happening is that no one usually dies from a bad Trane unit, and it doesn't get worldwide publicity as it should. From what I have read, it doesn't matter what size unit. If it's Trane, you are going to waste your money and feel the pain. Threaten them, scream at them, join together, and sue them. Publicize their rip-off stories on sites like these or any way you can. Any company who does business like this needs to correct it. They sold bad parts in units, and knew they were bad... and let the consumers get stuck with crap.

The bad publicity and reputation management that issues will cost a global company are serious... so get Trane to pay. We have lost money, days of work waiting for repairmen, discomfort in being cold or hot for days every season, and extra utilities, because fans and space heaters and unit compressors are working overtime.

Our local contractor contacted Trane for a replacement part. This included a variable speed 2-stage furnace, top-of-the-line Trane heat pump, new coils, and a whole house humidifier. The system worked for a year. In September 2012, we started to get error messages on the thermostat. Since calling McCrea to fix this system, they have been here seven (7) times. The problems were no outdoor temperature reading, the system not being able to switch from heat pump to furnace when the temperature dropped below 35 degrees, and the humidifier stopped working. Most of these issues are related to a defective relay panel, which Trane apparently doesn’t keep in stock, or they break quite often and they can’t keep them in stock. The system still does not work as advertised and has not worked correctly for five (5) months. I do have a service contract with McCrea, and all repairs have been under warranty, but the system still doesn’t work correctly.

XV 90 Control Board fried after warranty expired - I had a XV 90 installed in 2004. It has run without issue up until Christmas Eve 2012. I'll spare the horror story around the troubleshooting process to determine the board was fried, but in the end, I ended up forking out $1,100 to have a new control board installed. Symptoms: (1) no heat; (2) it came on once, but that appeared to be its final cycle; (3) fan would still run, so it led me to believe that there was hope. Bottom line: There's a known problem with the board for the model/serial of my furnace. It was recommended by Trane that a new control board/upgrade kit be installed. I plan to keep it around just so that I feel like I gained something from spending so much on a new control board. The service tech that did the repair mentioned that this is a common occurrence and he carries extra boards in his truck for this very reason - nice.

It was installed on Aug. 2012. I chose the system because Trane’s literature claimed an ultra quiet system XB13 (Craig Krueger). On a stand-in closet between living room and bedroom, this is anything but quiet. It has had a new blower put in and a new relay in Nov. The dealer said he couldn't come back. The blower quieted down the loud bang it made in the beginning and ending of cycle, and I didn't know what the relay did. I have called Trane Consumer Relations who told me that I have to call my dealer who should send out a field rep. I called the dealer and no response to date, so I put in a claim to BBB a couple of days ago and now you.

I have epilepsy, and sleep deprivation is a trigger to set off seizures. This dealer told me there was nothing he could do about the noise, and one of his techs told me the same thing last week when I called. Oh yes, I forgot to mention that the bed vibrates slightly. I have moved it to another area in the room; still, a slight vibration. The outside unit is near the window. With the tech's permission, I put a piece of fiberglass foam board near the blower to quiet the whistling noise - that helped. The dealer suggested moving the handler to the garage, not the attic; but this would cost $1500. I don't want the handler in the garage where it can send fumes through the house.

I would like to have this repaired if possible or change out the handler with a quieter one. I believe that their advertising is false and that should be stopped. I cannot afford to change this system, but I don't know how I'm going to live with it. People should be aware Trane is misleading them. It's not something you can try before you buy. You have to rely on the literature and the salesperson to a lesser degree.

I am waiting to see if BBB has any influence in resolving this before seeking an attorney.

When you are a small business in America these days, you get squeezed between big government and big business. I purchased my Trane AC on October 2, 2011 and am waiting installation of my 3rd evaporator coil. I was awoken up to water dripping inside the air return unit which the installation company installed in my bedroom of all places. The 2nd time I was awoken that night was because a chunk of ice dropped inside the return. When the service tech came today, he said I was low on Freon as well. When I purchased this unit, I also was told I would see at least a reduction of a minimum of 30%. When that didn't happen, I installed sheeting insulation in the attic even though what was there should have been sufficient.

The next year during my yearly "AC tune up", I was told I really should have a "kick start kit" installed and that way I should see the 30% reduction in the electric bill to the tune of another $200. In my opinion, I should not have to purchase an additional part to actually see that 30% reduction. That kick start kit should have come with the original purchase, not as an afterthought a year later! I've seen maybe an 18% reduction not the promised 30%. I feel that 3 evaporator coils in less than 3 years is a defect that Trane should correct and that I should not be charged for the repair. I also feel that if a problem occurs with that part again that I should not have to pay the labor to replace it again, and the warranty for that part should be 3 years longer than the other parts as it is 3 years newer.

I was told by the company that I purchased the unit from that I should contact Trane regarding the manufacturer’s defect. They told me to contact the supplier of the unit. When I brought up the fact that now the run around was starting (I was in middle of reading these posts when speaking with Trane), they actually took my contact information down and they attempted to contact the regional representative for Trane and the company that I purchased the unit from. I guess she started to get the run around as well and decided to call me back and did inform me that the new coil, once it is installed, should be fine because they are now replacing the coils with an aluminum coil. Maybe things are looking up but seeing 1 year from now is believing if I don't have to replace that coil again. Sorry for the book but thought all the information pertinent to the problem.

Now, the AC is not working. They say it is the TXV expansion valve. We have only had this unit a little over three years and it has been nothing but extra money paying for labor and diagnoses on a unit that should not have this many problems. I feel it is a lemon, there should be some kind of law that does not allow the companies that work for Trane or Trane to take advantage of people who purchase their products and have faulty parts that they already know are faulty, then charge the customer to have them replaced by paying for labor and diagnoses when they know these parts are faulty. They should send out recalls to the customers and have them replaced at no charge instead of getting rich off of customers who purchase this unit with no knowledge of the problems they're going to have and keep selling this unit to new customers so they can experience the same troubles.

It started leaking water onto the Trane air cleaner. The company Native Heat and Air (Brian Bazemore), who installed, came out and pointed out that the plastic water tray inside the unit was severely cracked. This defect had to have been there when it was installed.

Since it was past the 1 year, he charged $60.00 for the house call and $125.00 for labor. He supposedly asked his rep to cover this and they refused. This is so unfair to us. He stated that he's never seen one of these pans cracked. I have the part to prove it. If I don't get any action, I am making a call to the Attorney General’s office.

Our home was built in 2002 and completed in October. We have a closed loop geothermal system with 3 zones. Each zone has a heat pump and a Trane air handler. The system works well and we've had good heating and cooling for 9 1/2 years with low electric bills (thanks to geothermal). We have a 3 visit per year contract with the company that installed our system and have been generally pleased with this service. The first air handler failed after 4 years due to an evaporative coil leak. It was replaced under warranty (with plenty of labor costs). The second one had the same problem shortly after the 5-year warranty expired. It was replaced at full cost.

The third unit now requires replacement at less than 9 1/2 years old due to another evaporative coil leak. 3 out of 3! That’s a definite strike out for Trane. All 3 air handlers are indoors in clean protected environments and have had the units serviced 3 times per year. Our much cheaper heat pump that we had in our previous house in TX (with air handler in a blazing hot attic) never had a coil leak. The electric bills were a lot more, but there were no failures in 13 years.

In 2001, the reversing valve failed and I was given the option to replace just the valve (not recommended by the technician) at a cost of $500 or replace the entire outside compressor unit at a cost of $1450. I chose the latter. In 2009, the compressor burned out due to a refrigerant leak. I had the compressor replaced, lines flushed of any dirt or debris, tested for acid contamination and recharged at a cost of $1600.00. The new compressor burned out after 3 weeks. So far I have $8650.00 in this heat pump and it still does not work properly. In my opinion, Trane products are poorly made, of inferior quality and they rely on advertising and their reputation from 15-20 years ago for sales today. I cannot recommend anybody buy this overpriced junk.

In January 2012, our Trane electric air filter, which I've seen advertised compellingly on TV, stopped operating. We had purchased it in 2006 for approximately $1,500 (I don't recall the precise cost). I was told the Power Pack needed to be replaced, at our expense of course since it was several months past its 5-year warranty. The cost, a mere $940 plus $37 installation, or about $977, or I could buy a new one for the low, low price of $1,400. That’s right, just $1,400 (operators are standing by). A few days later, the dealer called me back and said the part was out of stock at Trane and would have to be shipped from the plant, involving an additional 5-10 days of shipping and an additional cost of $68, or a total of $1,045 for the repair, but that they could sell me a new one for the new low, low price of only $1,250. I was informed that the Trane sales representative had told the dealer he couldn't do anything about this. So I called the Trane customer complaint line at 1-903-581-3200 (that's 1-903-581-3200! I called out the A/C technician and he informed me that there is a manufacture defect in the condenser unit's coil. The coil rubs against another piece of metal to cause a hole where the Freon leaks out. My coils had actually 2 holes where the Freon was leaking out. They told me that the coil was under warranty but they would have to charge for labor and Freon and this would cost around $700. I contacted Trane and they told me that they have no control over the prices of labor. I told them that I understood that but requested them if they could get me an A/C technician that they would pay to have it replaced and of course, I have gotten the run around.

There is an attorney that is doing the investigation for a class action lawsuit. I really think they have a great case. My other issue is if I pay to have the new coil replaced with the coil Trane sends them for free, who’s to say that I don't have the same problem in another year. Have they made modifications on their coil or is it the same design as the one that has already faulted? Trane needs to stop beating around the bush and recall these faulty coils. In September 2009 we purchased a Trane A/C and furnace system from Hillner Heating and Cooling (601 Center Street, Bellvue, KY 41073) who installed the unit for us the same month, replacing a different brand. The following spring April 2009 when we turned on the A/C for the first time it failed to function properly (the year after installation). We called Hillner who sent out a mechanic to service the unit and upon checking he found that the A/C does not have enough pressure and is unable to produce enough cold air to do its job and cool the house. He determined the reason for the failure was a broken evaporator coil in the indoor unit. A replacement part was ordered and, after another 10 days waiting time, installed. Freon topped off and the unit worked for a while.

Due to another failure of the unit early this year we unsuccessfully called Hillner and then started calling the available Trane dealers for a service call. Two of the 3 companies listed on Trane's page are not even servicing our area! The third one decided to raise their service call charge in between our first and second call which, in my opinion, is not very trustworthy business behavior either if you are given one estimate the first time and a raised estimate a day later.

That is the reason why we went with Reupert Heating and Cooling (5137 Cookshank Rd, Cincinnati, OH 45238) since they were able to come out on a short notice. Upon their first visit (4/22/11) they found the unit low on Freon, refilled Freon, which with the service call cost us $183.80 out of pocket. They recommended a leak search which they performed on a second service call (5/6/11) and ended up using a leak sealant, unable to locate a visible leak in the system which cost us another $423.57 out of pocket. Next time we turned the unit back on it switched off overnight again! On a third service call (visit on 5/13/11) Reupert determined that the evaporator coil is causing the problem due to the fact that only the bottom part of the coil is getting cold.

They ordered the replacement part and gave us an estimate (labor costs of $ 412.50 and Freon recharge costs of $ 484.69) which comes out to a whopping $902.18 for a unit that is not even 4 years in service in our house by now! With the prior costs caused this year alone, the repair is $1509.55 in costs for a unit that was installed in September of 2008, repaired (due to the failure of the same part) in April 2009 and is now having problems again. I do not think that this goes along well with the promise that Trane produces good quality products! Either that or there must have been a problem with the initial installation by the dealer, which by now is closed and has not been available to help out with any of our difficulties and that without any notice as well.

On top of that Reupert now claims they have been sent an incorrect part for the unit by Trane and cannot fix the unit until they receive the correct part. In the meantime, the (just refilled) unit has been drained of the Freon charge (we had paid for not even a month ago) once again and sits useless at our house for almost 3 weeks by now. We are told by Reupert that the delivery of the new correct part will take another 10 days! The A/C’s serial number is 73557X04F. The furnace’s serial number is 8315NFT5G. When I called Trane residential first (on 5/13) seeking help with our problem, I spoke to Nate and received the following ticket # **. Unfortunately at the time I was unsure what coil in the unit had failed prior to this year and apparently misinform him. In the meantime I was able to locate the proper documentation (by Hillner), which proves that it was the exact same part that failed almost 2 years to the day!

I would think you'd like better consumer relations than what we have been given so far. I won't mention any names yet but my wife was told over the phone that it was a corrosion issue and was treated without respect. The person who replaced the coil (the second time) told us there were no corrosion issues. Same coil different year. I have the paperwork to prove it. I guess I will have to contact an attorney in this matter. 3-year old system failing twice in the same period. If I don't see some form of compensation, I will report to Howard **, John-**. I will also make a YouTube video of "trying to get a Trane started year after year". Sure nothing will stop a Trane but you have to get it started first. A/C is working now after 3 visits from Reupert for a total of $1509.59.

The final issue was another replacement of the compressor which at this point I asked if the unit was in fact a manufacture defect which I received no response. I contacted the Trane National Office to voice my complaint on this continuous issue ref#**.

They contacted the regional rep, who sent another contractor out to inspect the unit. The regional rep told me on the phone that Trane would replace the heat pump if I agreed to replace the air handler for $1800.00 since the air handler was not compatible. I questioned why, if the handler was not compatible they sold me the unit knowing it was not compatible and since this was at least the fifth call for the same issue and multiple specialist reviewing the entire system, now they realize the units are not compatible. I accepted the verbal agreement to replace the air handler and the field rep stated that they would send the contract for me to sign.

I received the contract for new air handler & heat pump replacement stating cost would be $1800.00. I returned the contract as requested and a couple of days later received a call stating I misunderstood the conversation and they did not say they would replace the heat pump at no charge. (I still have a copy of the original contract sent to me) Now the charge is $2600.00 for air handler and to replace the compressor and they can't guarantee how long the compressor will last since the unit is over five years old.

Additionally, I was told that this is not in which they are at fault so I should take this deal. I have not received any further response from the main office either since I forwarded all emails related to what I was offered and asked for a project plan to discuss completion and asked for a conference call between regional, national & myself to resolve this issue. This has been a record setting year for high summer temperatures and the amount of time and money spent on this revolving issue has been completely stressful and discomforting.

Now, we are in the heating season, and for the most part, the heat pump has never worked. They have made 5 service calls and still don't know what was wrong. The TXV valve has been replaced twice. The newest one isn't working properly either. Supposedly, the local folks are in contact with Trane on what to do next and something new was tried. But that didn't work either. So he banged on the TXV to get it to start working temporarily (1 hour, 1 day, who knows?), while he consults with Trane again.

I want my old system back! I think these "green" jobs they talk about are to fix all the "green" junk they are making. I'm getting no energy savings, as the heat pump is never working. if anything, it is worse than my old system. Let's not even start talking about the time lost and aggravation.

I had a complete Trane 14i heat pump system with Trane backup gas furnace system installed six years ago. I have had nothing but problems with the system. There has not been a single year since installation that something major did not go wrong. The motor in the heat pump has been replaced at least five or six times. When I purchased the system, I was told that I had a five year warranty on the entire system. The first time it went bad, I was informed that the warranty was only for parts and did not cover service calls or labor. After about two or three problems, the people at R&R said to contact someone else in the future and that they would no longer service my equipment.

Early this week, the heat pump quit working and the diagnosis by another firm was that the compressor was shot and would need to be replaced - a $2,000.00 fix. I began purchasing a service contract at the end of the five year period after installation, and fortunately, that has been covering my costs. I am afraid that they will refuse to extend the service contract for another year after this compressor problem. I am very frustrated with the system. It has not performed as advertised and I would never have anything to do with Trane or R&R Heating of Spokane, WA again.

I am an A/C contractor in FL and recently was asked by a customer to provide evaporator coils replacement on some old units. Normally, on units over 15 years old, we recommend replacing the entire AHU (Air Handling Units), but we have to make an exception on this situation since the units are in fairly good condition. The customer wanted the coils replaced from Chilled Water to DX (Direct Expansion). Normally, this can be easily achieved by having the specs on the units, but there is where my problem came with Trane.

I first requested a simple quote from Trane to replace these coils with DX coils; after sending them the proper information, never got an answer back. They are just ignoring my emails. When I called to request specs on these units, to have the coils made by some OEM coil maker, in light of the fact that they are not interested in selling me the coils, the answer I get is, “We do not have specs for those units.” I can’t believe that a manufacturer, as big and famous as Trane, does not have a database with information on old units? Their customer service has a lot to say about them, especially on these hard economic times. By the way, this is not the first time I have an issue with them, but this is the drop that filled my cup! You can bet where my feelings are about Trane.

My family built a new home and moved in February 2008. Two Trane heat pumps costing over $15,000.00 were installed in our home. Within months of moving in, we started experiencing problems with both units. In March of 2008, a local contractor came to service both units because they weren’t heating. Once he examined the units, he stated that he observed a problem with that model. He stated he sent that info in his report to Trane. He also expressed that he would never install that model and that it would never work right, going on to say that anytime the units were changed from heat to cool or vice versa that the units would have to be serviced.

A few weeks later, the contractor who installed the units came out because both units had stopped working again. He found that the compressors in both units needed to be replaced. In June of 2008, he returned again and found that one unit was frozen and determine that he needed to order another part. Unfortunately, he assured me that everything was fine and I never received a service report. Therefore, I don’t know what part was replaced, just that we had no A/C for a couple of days.

In August of 2009, we noticed the overflow drain was dripping. Again, he came and serviced the unit leaving no paperwork behind. Within two weeks of that visit, both units stopped cooling again. My contractor and the regional manager came to my home and determined that there may have been an installation error. They worked on both units while I was gone, and when I came home, the units were cooling; again, no service report.

At this point, I had sent several emails to Trane expressing my concern that these models may be defective. I asked that the warranty on parts and labor be extended to lifetime at no cost to us or to exchange the defective units for completely different models. I received no response. I called the regional manager who simply stated that this concern would have to be taken up with the contractor. I have tried to call again but was sent to voice mail.

Again in October 2009, one unit stopped heating. When the contractor came, we discussed that there was a problem. He admitted to not understanding what was going on. I asked he bring all service reports to me, that didn’t happen. He replaced a part and left. That unit stopped heating again in November of 2009. The contractor said he was going to replace the unit. We asked for a different model but he refused. Our builder stated that he would stand behind the unit and said if we had any other problems, he would insist that both units be removed from the home and we be refunded. The contractor also said he would extend the warranty an additional year because we had so many problems. So we agreed verbally, and the new unit was installed.

In May of 2009, both units again stopped cooling. They would make a loud knocking noise, so loud it would wake the entire family up at night. The units were serviced again; the contractor saying it was just a setting that needed adjusted. In June 2009, the replaced unit was frozen because a part had gone bad, it was ordered and replaced. We called our builder asking to have the units removed as promised. He stated it was out of his hands and that the contractor was wiping his hands of the whole mess and just waiting for the extended warranty that he verbally promised to come and go.

In October 2009, we switched from A/C to heat. Neither unit is working. Cool air is blowing from the vents. We have called the contractor, the builder and sent an email to Trane. I don’t even know where to turn. Our "extended warranty" will expire in February 2010. We cannot afford to replace these "top of the line" units nor can we afford to service them every time the seasons change. We did call the company that said the models were defective and would never work correctly only to find that he would never repeat that again. He denies saying that and denies that his report stated that. Our installing contractor said we could sue Trane but that they have written their warranties in a way that it would be impossible to win.

I purchased a Trane air-conditioning unit at Coconut Creek, Florida Home Depot on 07/06/07 in the amount of $8,900.00. It was supposed to be top of the line and energy-efficient so I had it installed. However, a year after its purchase, I made several calls to a local service rep (Koldaire) about the system not cooling and high humidity. They kept telling me I was wrong and that this is how the system really works - but it didn't cool as well as what the original air-con builder put in 13 years ago.

When I called to follow-up, they sent a tech out to my home to inspect on two occasions (all documented - 10/15 and 10/22) and they said it was a dirty filter - not the case. My husband cleans it every month and he is excellent when it comes to keeping our home in mint condition. This past labor day, the compressor blew, there was smoke, and the system had to be shut down so we had no air for two days.

The tech comes out (third visit) and it blew again in his presence. Now, there is a two-year warranty and a ten-year warranty but they are claiming that they want me to pay $1,738 for labor - plus, I already paid a service call. I have documented that there was something wrong with the system and they kept pushing me away and dismissing it. It is clear the unit had a defective compressor and was bound to go.

Now, the system has been temporarily hooked up to the second compressor (the system comes with two) and the house is cooler than it ever was. The system is working better than it ever has which proves that there was an original problem which they dismissed. The level of humidity now is 42% - the system never would go that low. And my FPL bill never lowered which means it wasn't energy efficient as they claimed it to be. How can they expect me to pay another cent when I've already put out $8,900.00 for a defective system?

They are claiming that I needed an extended warranty when the system blew up after two years. This is unfair and I am being taken advantage of. Neither Home Depot or Trane is taking responsibility. Please help us. Thank you. I can provide any additional information you may need. I have also dealt with Home Depot. I contacted both companies' headquarters but they are not helping. They need to stand by their equipment and the store needs to back the sale as well.

The service guy is out at least 3 times a year, replacing the TXV valve or some related component. The installer (Perry Hall HVAC) has been wonderful, and it is under warranty. But the Trane rep was rude and absolutely arrogant and useless. I spent $6k on a new "high efficiency" unit, and I wish I had my old one back which ran relatively flawlessly for 20 years. This Trane unit is a joke! I can always count on it to fail when I need it most. It's a total piece of junk!

I purchased a top-of-the-line Trane XL16i and an XC95 furnace to take advantage of the tax rebate. Within 10 days, the unit started malfunctioning out at the programmable thermostat. Then, I threw the breaker to reset for two days thinking it was a result of the abnormal heavy rain that we had been receiving. When I called the installer, Schultheis Brothers, they took two days to show up in our house. The service person said that it will be a 3-day turnaround for the parts. On the following Monday, thinking they would automatically come out early in the morning, I called them at 10:30 to see when they would be there. The rude customer service person said that I got rescheduled for Tuesday because they were busy.

The parts had arrived at 8:30 AM on Monday. Apparently, $9,000.00 does not warrant quick service. I had also called Trane Customer Service to lodge a complaint, but no one bothered to call back. The only decent help came from Home Depot who was the seller. They got on the phone to Schultheis and forced them to move the appointment up to a Tuesday morning time. All in all, I was not impressed with the Trane components and definitely not impressed with Schultheis. I have asked for a return of my old unit (which worked fine but did cost a lot to operate) but Schuthies refused. I am still waiting to see if they can fix it and am running a window unit to get by.

I bought a Trane heat pump 3 years ago. The TXV valve has failed. I looked up this problem online and apparently, it is a common failure. This is a relatively new item. The part they are using is defective, yet they keep selling it. Now, I have to get this valve replaced in order to have air conditioning. I tried contacting the national office, regional office and local office and no human would answer the phone. Instead, I was disconnected and at one point, when a human answered, I was given a customer service number that was wrong! These people don't give a ** about customer service and service. They are using parts they know are faulty and have a history of failure. Some jerk in a regional office told me they fail all the time and "tough luck".

It will cost me $500 to have a service tech put a new valve (which may or may not last another 3 years!) in a 3-year-old Trane heat pump. In my opinion, they are the masters of designed obsolescence and have designed these products knowing they will fail, therefore they can sell more parts. Never buy a Trane!

I paid $179 to have it recharged. While coil is covered, the company wants $750 more for labor. My complaint to Trane was referred to the regional representative. I haven't been contacted yet. I want the eight manifold joints re-sweated, because Internet searches reveal apparent manufacturing defect. Even if it's replaced free, I don't want $1,000 repair bill a couple of years down the road, because of another bad coil. It may "take a lot to stop a Trane," but not that much!

I had a Trane system installed several years ago. The original installer is now out of business. The coils had been replaced several times under warranty. There was still several years warranty left when Malek, Inc. was called to repair it again. I was advised to replace the unit due to the same problems (by Malek, Inc.). A new Trane was installed in 2007. An agreement was made for the remaining warranty to include full coverage on the new unit; Trane never put this in writing.

On 04/18/2009, the new unit stopped working. On 04/20/2009, it was diagnosed by Malek, Inc. of having the same problem (leaking coils). This unit isn't even two years old and still in warranty. A simple search on Yahoo revealed Trane (American Standard Inc., P.O. Box 9010 Tyler, TX 75711-9010 Troup Highway Tyler, TX 75711-9010) has had numerous failures of the coils, either design flaw/defective/workmanship. One company in Florida replaced coils 12 times. Another in Alabama replaced 4 on the same unit. The list goes on. Hundreds have been replaced. Most take about 7 pounds of Freon 22 per unit each time all this Freon released into the atmosphere due to Trane Inc. This not only depletes the ozone, they could be violating the EPA Clean Air Act due to known problems with the design/defective/workmanship.

If all these units are repaired under warranty, someone has the total number of Freon 22 releases. My unit is awaiting parts. It seems so many is being replaced. No one in our area has any in stock. Something needs to be done about all these alleged accidental releases of Freon. My A/C still isn't fixed. I don’t know if they are going to charge from the warranty left on the old unit or the new unit. It’s very costly and time-consuming on my part.

Consequences: loss of work due to meeting the repair man (Malek, Inc.), nerves and blood pressure rise due to explaining to wife, release of Freon 22 into the atmosphere due to a probable manufacture problems of the Trane unit, unknown cost due to Malek, Inc. and Trane not responding back to me yesterday with a plan as what was covered or when it would be fixed or replaced.

Became very bad this winter, and had Mr Larry McLellan come to my house with test meters. HE DID NOT FIND ANYTHING WRONG !!!!!!

BUT the problem did not start until the new unit was installed and had the old unit for 25 years. Everyone I could check with says the air coming from my duct work is 10 times stronger that theirs and my old unit.
I cut holes in light swithes for test points and no air would come out unless the fan was one and had several friends and family do the same test and agreed.

You can only feel the leak with a wet finger or hand not a test meter

The fan motor in my old unit was a 1/6 horsepower and the new unit is 1/3 horsepower. Have to leave a window open to allow the fan extra air so it will not pull fiber glass from the electric outlets and panaling joints

My wife is not sensitivite to fiber glass and does not notice it but has had sore throat all winter and a bad ear infecting which I say is fiber glass

No tell how many sick people there are because of these stronger fans that WILL pull extra air from anywhere it can and they are not fiber glass sensitivity.

All duct has been checked and no leaks

I'm scared to death now that it will cause a fire in my home so i am constantly running downstairs to check how hot it is, i also shut the breaker off when the house is warm enough and wait a couple hours to turn it back on. I have lost alot of sleep fearing i will not be awake should a fire start in the basement. I assume it's not the company that installed it that needs to be addressed but the manufacturer.
