My company pre-paid for leads. Many of the leads we have been charged for have never responded to repeated calls, texts or emails. As such, there is no way for us to verify if the lead was valid and we were unable to offer an estimate. How do we even know if these leads are real? We don't. However, we were automatically billed for these leads. Thumbtack denied our request for credit, saying that the charges are valid under their terms of service.
Hi Aaron, we're sorry you haven't been hearing back from customers. If you ever find that a customer or lead is not legitimate, please report it to us so that we can take appropriate action: https://help.thumbtack.com/report-a-concern. Unfortunately the business model for Thumbtack only serves them and not really their pros. We work in an in demand field, and Thumbtack would charge an obscene amount for one lead ($100), if the client is requesting frequent work with us. The sad news is the clients rarely end up booking, or responding and following through, are fake, or hire then quit. It is a scalp of a business and I really hope other pros will stay away!
Hi Gabriela, we're sorry to hear that this was your experience. It's important to us that we can help pros be successful on the platform, we'd be happy to help turn things around in anyway that we can. To be clear, I was looking for a licensed, bonded, insured handyman or contractor that could do work in my home. I saw this app pop up a few times before on a few websites and a few times on my cell phone. Seeing all the hype and seeing the continuous pop ups I decided to download the app and see if I can actually locate anyone to do the work and even paint wall murals. Needless to say I saw small portion of Handymen on this app and when some of them contacted me I immediately asked if they were licensed, bonded, and or insured. The answers I received were a joke, because if this app promotes Handymen then they need to promote as stating unlicensed. There is a reason why I ask if they are licensed, bonded, and insured as any homeowner has a complete and utter right to make sure work is done correctly and if any problems arise they can mediate through the State Contractors Board or Lawyers.
Thanks for sharing your experience with us. We do have expectations for all pros to be properly licensed and hold the appropriate credentials within their state and county guidelines. If you find that this isn't true, please report these concerns to us so that we can look further into them: https://help.thumbtack.com/report-a-concern. Stay away from this company. I have tried them for the last 4 months and they are a complete ripoff. Prices increased by 25% just while I was using them and their leads are bogus. I strongly suspect that this is a false lead generation company. Basically 98% of the leads were bogus and never replied back and then they would not refund even though they say they will refund if there is no reply. They denied EVERY SINGLE request to refund. We are off their site and will never use ever again. Don't waste your money.
Oh yeah...someone also attempted to defraud us with a Venmo scam and they got my personal name from Thumbtack background checks where they post your full name on their site. I requested to remove the background check altogether because I really don't care about it and they basically told me that if I do that they can't have the right to sell my information and the entire account would be deleted. THIS IS ONE OF THE WORST COMPANIES I HAVE EVER DEALT WITH SECOND ONLY TO YELP. (That's another story). Terrible business practices, robbing their paying clients, and providing no customer services and very little value in leads. Stay away.

I was a Service provider for Reiki Holistic Healing and Life Coach. You pay for apparently people who supposedly say they are interested in your service and then never respond. This has cost me over $150 before I took my payment method off. You cannot reach a live person when trying to communicate with them. Would NOT recommend their service and am sure to charge my unfair experience with others. This business is a SCAM!! My guess is they pay people to say they are interested and never respond. You should only have to pay if they booked a job/session with you.

I become a pro in early 2020 as I run my own photography business. It was going great. I was getting leads and only paying $4-10 per lead. Now I have been getting charged $50 for just 3 leads that don’t even reply or ghost me after me replying to their request. I then ask for a refund and they say it doesn’t apply for one. It use to be if they don’t reply in 24 hours you get a credit/refund. This is such a waste of money and a huge way of taking advantage of small businesses and companies. There is no way I am spending $50 on 3 leads that don’t even go anywhere….

Signed up, 4, 5 days later started getting leads, I was excited and started replying.. That mistake cost me almost $1000, leads never replied, ever. I reached out for a reimbursement and to close my account. Shut down from the get go, because I replied to the leads. Almost $1000 later in credit card charges.. Please don't make the same mistake I did. Look into what you are signing up for before you reply to any leads. Worst experience of my life with a company, horrible reimbursement policy, basically non existent. If the service they provide is not for you.. Well you are out of luck my man. You can't get your money back. In my desperation for work I made a huge mistake.. Just please watch out and understand how it all works before signing up.

Thumbtack has removed how many pros have sent in a bid, on each job. Example 1 Pro responded or 0 Pros responded. SMH - Now more people will bid on 1 job. They will be charging each pro, $10-$199 just to send out a bid. The job is not guaranteed. They keep changing and charging more. They use to be half the price.

I have used Thumbtack for years. For all types of home improvement projects as well as other needs such as legal representation. I have never been so disgusted in how they are choosing to handle a recent situation I experienced with one of their contractors. This guy was a complete scam artist. He took $1,600 of my money and completely trashed my place. Not only did he not do the job he was hired to do, he subcontracted out to another idiot who continued to trash the place even more!
The bigger issue is how Thumbtack's "Safety Team" decided to handle this. I hired this guy in April and it is late August. I have not seen one penny of their "money back guarantee" or "damages" clause (refer to website) because they are making me jump through unnecessary hoops to get this. I suggested mediation that would stick in court but the contractor disappeared on them too! I have sent pictures, text threads and quotes to repair and it's still not good enough. They are intentionally making this process difficult so I can't recoup any of the thousands of dollars I have lost dealing with this crook. Like I said, extremely disgusted.

I recently had a client who made up a complete lie in order to get a refund for goods paid for. I, like every other service provider, have a no refunds policy, all sales are final. This is especially true for the trial offer I give to clients who commit to signing up at the first session. The client lied and made up a fake car accident she got into on the way to our first session in order to guilt me into refunding her money. It was clear that this was a lie when the client could not provide the police report for the car accident she got in or medical bill or note from the doctor from when she supposedly went to the ER. She even sent me a fake police report thinking that I wouldn't follow up with the cops to see if it was true. She ended up leaving me a slanderous 1/5 star review - my first one after years on Thumbtack.
I thought the incident was over, however, one day I logged in to find that my account was frozen. Evidently the woman had contacted thumbtack and told them she demanded a refund. They sided with her, despite all of my evidence that she was lying about everything, and forced me to break the agreement I had made with her during our first session by keeping my account locked until I gave her money back. This is extortion. Thumbtack will hold your account, which they know you've worked hard on for years, hostage to get you to bend to their will. They will even go as far as forcing you to break your agreements/policies. This clearly isn't legal, but they're such a big company dealing with freelancers they know that they can bully their pros into submission.
Worst of all during this whole affair or any issue you have with them you can't even get a fair hearing on the matter. You can't talk to anyone on the phone at thumbtack (a great way to slash costs), and their "trust and safety" team is largely unresponsive, taking days to respond to each email in which they address none of your concerns and clearly just have a lawyer replying with automated responses demanding you bend to their will. I don't know how thumbtack thinks it will survive treating loyal pros like myself who make thumbtack tens of thousands of dollars so terribly. I certainly won't be using them anymore, not after this. And by the way, they say that increases in the price of leads will be small, but the price has tripled in just the past 8 months.

Thumbtack advertises a guarantee but collecting on it is another matter. I reported my problem to them, filled out the form and then they told me to confirm the form. They gave me less than 48 hours to comply. When I missed the deadline they closed my case. I think they were more interested in sweeping this under the rug than with helping me with anything. Since I didn't see any limit on the number of times I could file a complaint, I started a new complaint. They referred me to the confirm your complaint page again which just has a blue progress dot and never opened. Long story short - expect the worst from them and you won't be disappointed. Total ripoff.

I joined Thumbtack (Tt) June 2021 and am in the Sprinkler and Irrigation Repair Business. At first, Tt send me FREE leads, low cost leads, and then BOOM...the bottom dropped out. The DIRTY Truth about Tt is that have no true customer service, it's all app driven, text driven. Refunds are almost impossible and I can't tell you how many times I've called to argue with a $12/hr Remote Support person about a BOGUS LEAD!!! YES, bogus, tire kicking leads that never existed, no contact info, or cancelled the job the day of receiving a "lead". I was told by 1 remote support idiot for Tt that " you are paying only for contact with a potential customer...regardless if they are wanting service or cancel". Piss poor business model.
Imagine if you bought a TV at Walmart, took it home and discovered the TV was damaged, and then Walmart refused to issue you a refund/replacement. This is what Tt does...they suck you in with a "teaser rate" and then once you start paying, they stop supporting you as a CONTRACTOR. Tt's refund policy is miles of legal jargon that forces you to opt in to in order to use their service. HOWEVER, there is one Thunder-Hammer that all CONTRACTORS can use to get your $$$ back from Tt....let me know if you are interested and I will share with you. I am officially ending my Tt account today. Do yourself a favor and consider BETTER lead generating services. Good luck contractors in your business, do the best work, be honest, and take care of your customers. -Coach Construction

The cost for leads used to be reasonable. $8-14 on average. Now I'm paying $30 for a single lead. They started increasing their prices in January 2020. RIGHT in the middle of the height of the pandemic. Not to mention Thumbtack encourages each potential client to contact at least 4 to 5 other pros so they're making bank from a single lead. This company got greedy. Plain and simple. They used to offer refunds to leads that never read or respond to your initial message. Now they took that away because they guarantee a phone number so you can access them. So many of these leads will ghost you so you're out hundreds of dollars for nothing. I think they are the embodiment of what we call the evil corporation. Do what you can to avoid this company.

Thumbtack fake advertise you will get charged only per lead once you have communication with the client. I received a match with potential customers, which I never spoke either by text or message on the app, it was just seeing what they needed, none of the clients contacted called back or accepted my communication. Greedy $26.00 for a lead that never responds back to you, gives you a fake number, and when you ask them to refund your money, they DON'T! I mean, they're basically making millions by exploiting honest business owners.
I have been given leads that are obvious scammers and people with absolutely no intent of using my travel business! Thumbtack, should be ashamed of themselves! they manipulate their users (on a trial) into using an unreliable platform for their own financial gain and we are forced to use the credit, this is not acceptable. I was charged $150 after 10 mins of using their app. When I hit my back button to leave the payment screen it picked it up and charged my card.
I checked my bank statement straight away and I saw my $320 charged on my card for each match I received and NO leads, I complained to them. I immediately deactivated my account I had set up. Contacted a person through email, the only way they talk to you, and he informed me it's non-refundable charge! The money paid to Thumbtack is not returned to you so they kept everything after I canceled my subscription with them. I won't be forced to use this service AGAIN, I want my money back into my card and not the credit, this is misleading service and false information. Fraud at its best.

I've had a horrible experience with Thumbtack during the past year and it just keeps getting worse. I've been a 5-star Top Pro with Thumbtack for 3 years. At first, they promoted my business a lot and was getting charged $4-$10 for every lead for new resume clients. This worked out okay because the price of leads was affordable. Some of these leads resulted in nothing - potential clients would ghost me or not respond to any of my messages after I was already billed for the lead. That said, I did generate new business and overall, the fees weren't bad.
Some while ago, Thumbtack briefly started refunding their pros if a lead ghosted them, failing to read the message if you replied to their lead within 4 hours. This was helpful as I was getting refunds from these ghost leads that sometimes approached 4-8 pros. I saw that Thumbtack was getting huge payouts from charging 3-5 pros at a time for the same exact leads. So if a resume brings in $145 for me (the minimum), Thumbtack was earning $16 - $40 on this lead from all the pros that were getting charged for the lead.
During the past year, it's been awful. They eliminated this refund possibility (when leads don't read the message) and instead guaranteed a phone number, which basically means nothing because 90% of the leads don't answer their phones or won't text back and it's just a new round of ghosting. Not only that, Thumbtack has been charging way over the top for the pros. Today, they are charging me up to $25-$30 (sometimes more) for one resume client which still only brings in about $145 for entry-level and $195 for senior-level. This means they are getting $150 if the lead contacts 5 pros... meaning they are getting $150 for a $145 job, which seems to be in poor taste and egregious business practice.
I'd been loyal to Thumbtack and when I reach out about this, all their customer service reps do is give you "tips" on being successful. I know how to be successful. I'd been successful on Thumbtack, but they've changed their business practices to make it impossible to succeed. It's very difficult to compete with other pros when Thumbtack encourages leads to contact additional pros (select up to three additional pros)... this feature is always turned on and all it does is hurt my business. If someone selects me as their pro, Thumbtack encourages them to select others to compete against me. Most of the time, these people are much cheaper trying to break into the market. Some of them only charge $50 or $60 for the same service, which is impossible because basically, I'd be earning $5 an hour if I offered that price. I can't compete, and I'm losing so much money it's no longer worth it.
In one month, Thumbtack has charged me nearly $2000 in fees on my credit card for 79 leads, which is an average of $25-$30 a lead. I've gotten about 10 clients only from these leads, and after I pay credit card fees, etc. During the past month, I've earned around $1000 on these Thumbtack leads. I'm getting ghosted more and more by the leads even though I reach out multiple times and have a strong profile along with a 5-star rating, no negative reviews, am a Top Pro three years running, and have a fully fleshed-out profile. I also have almost 200 5-star reviews.
To Thumbtack: I don't need tips on being successful; I need Thumbtack to stop overcharging on leads. I need them to stop promoting other pros so that Thumbtack can get huge payouts for projects that generate only $150 in income for 1 pro only. I need Thumbtack to refund leads that don't reply or don't even bother to read the message. They are just full of excuses. They are greedy. They are engaging in price-gouging and it's really unfair. I've decided to stop using them altogether because they are not going to refund me any of the high prices I've paid for leads that lead to nothing and because all they are going to do is turn it back on me and say I need to read some article on how to be successful on Thumbtack. It's baloney. They need to alter their business practices and stop trying to find ways to make more money off struggling business owners.
To further raise their prices on Pros so much during Covid-19 is just horrible and they should be ashamed. Most of us are freelancers who are barely getting by and this company is just ripping us off. Don't use Thumbtack. You'll get your eyes gouged out and your credit card bill so high you can't afford to stay in business. You'll be tossed a bunch of useless leads who won't bother to respond. You'll be told by Thumbtack's customer service representatives that it's your fault, not theirs.

Very dissatisfied with this app. They have account “owner” pass a background check and the account owners don’t show up for the job. For example Aces Landscaping in Las Vegas is owned by Alondra **. She never shows up to the work site and has only used her name for someone else that cannot pass the background check. Aces Landscaping was RPG Landscaping but account was cancel because the owner Ricardo ** was unable to pass background check. It is very disappointing that Thumbtack allows companies without making the “employees” pass a background check. I wouldn’t recommend thumbtack as you have no idea who really the account owner is or if the employees are criminals and whom you are opening your home to.

If you need them, their Cs will not respond to emails or calls. In my case 9-separate attempts. This company actually deserves a ZERO rating. I wish I'd done my research prior to hiring. I asked Jose Rivas, owner of JL Painting, for a quote to install underdeck roofing over my patio. Jose REQUIRED 50% deposit PLUS cost of materials upfront. HUGE RED FLAG! His team destroyed my underdeck roofing panels ($$) with poor cuts and improper installation. I let Jose know that I was not satisfied with the quality of work. And that I did not think they should have installed the patio ceiling fan until after they had completed and caulked the deck roofing. He created an electrical nightmare. See pic. It was quite evident they did NOT know how to properly install the product.
I had to share a video with him to show how the product should have been installed. He said he would "make it right." Fast-forward - he has since stopped responding to my texts and has obviously blocked my calls. I wish I had read Tasha C. review prior to hiring. Apparently he has a history of taking advantage - he chases money but does not deliver the product. LESSON LEARNED: Make sure they know how to do the work. Do your research before hiring any contractor. Check references. Require proof that they have done and can do the work you need done. And most of all - NEVER HIRE JOSE RIVAS - JL PAINTING to do any of your projects. HE IS IN IT FOR THE 50% UPFRONT AND THEN HE RUNS IF HE DOES NOT WANT TO COMPLETE THE TASK

I use to belong to Thumbtack years ago in the early 2014 when they were legit. Not sure what happen now but it's a rip off. I resigned up earlier this week anticipating using their service as a pro in the coming months. I'm currently overseas right now {July 21} and will return stateside next month {August 21}. Upon signing up I noticed the requirements of adding a credit card, so I did. Also there was limits that had to be set for leads for 3 categories that I had deactivated. Within the next day, I was billed $24.25 for another category that I could not activate or turn off for bid leads. Thumbtack automatically target me in that category and billed me since my credit was in their system. Attempts to contact them is futile. When you call there's no one available and you get a continuous recording to tell you that you can text to get customer service as an option without telling you that they will be with you within a certain time frame.
After waiting for an hour with the the same message playing over and over again, I give up (which is the company's intent). I filed a written dispute and after 48 hours, nothing. This whole lead issue is fishy. Previously lead customers did not respond but now it's 10 times the amount which can be costly to someone starting out or waiting to secure an agreement and everyone with a credit card on file will have the same so call leads. After further reading and reading refunds are on a case by case basis but there's actually no refund but instead a credit. Why would anyone wants to continue this type of deceptive, costly, one sided relationship, not ME. I'm overseas and TT does not operate outside the U.S., this case warrants my money back! I able to activate/deactivate the service that I being charge for. It's a small amount for me but I'm sure they've taken a lot from other with these sketchy practices.

Thumbtack should not be used by consumers. They keep charging vendors when you have not selected certain preferences. They sent me leads during midnight and at 4:00 am and charge me $160 for a lead. When I complained, there is an automated message refusing the refund. Horrible customer service.

The leads was coming in but only one lead was real, when you sign up they’ll tell you to add money to targeted section and once that money is used up they start attacking your bank account. If you decide to block the days from work, you will still be charged and when you ask for a refund after they take your money, they decide not to put it back in your account but to put it on the Thumbtack account. These people has a lot of tricks of the trade to take your money. Be really careful with this company because talking to someone on the phone is nonexistent and no way to really stop the leads. So I might have to close my bank account to keep these people for going back into my account.
Darrell, we're sorry for any confusion you've felt about how Thumbtack works. We aim to help you see success and a great return on your investment. As a professional seeking to get leads, I was new to Thumbtack. I created my Professional profile last week, and selected the services that I will providing to customers. On the same day, Thumbtack sent me a lead that didn't have much in it beside the name of the customer and name of service they desire to hire me for. So I clicked on the link to learn more about the job, and I sent the customer inquiry to learn more about the project so I can price it properly. Before I know it, Thumbtack sends me a bill for $89 dollars for this one lead. Their terms and conditions state explicitly that Pros will only be charged once they give offer to customer and customer accepts the offer.
Neither of these two conditions were met to be billed for the lead. I been trying to contact Thumbtack for past few days and sent them few emails, but I yet to hear from them. And they don't have live chat service or phone number to call. I believe Thumbtack is very shady business or it is run by one person, at either case, my experience with them has been very horrible from the get go.

Thumbtack customer care stinks. Never really get answers to your questions. They expect you to do all the work instead of taking care of their customers themselves to get refunds or just general questions answered. Potential clients to the pros are not vetted properly, The pro is charged for leads that never Pan out. 3 fourths of the time the client doesn't even respond to the pro or if they do they've changed their mind because they're only window shopping!! The vetting process is absolutely horrible for designers. I have spent a ton a money over a two or three year period for leads that never even happened.

First off let me start by saying I like the concept of the app but… it’s a rip-off for me and anyone else that’s just getting started. I personally haven’t lost much money because I see what’s going on and nipped it in the bud. They charge your card when someone contacts you for a service but that doesn’t mean you get the job. You're pretty much paying to give a quote. They should only be charging cards if the job is confirmed. Again like I said the app may be good for someone that’s already up and running making money but it’s definitely not a good app to use if you're just starting out, you will spend more than you make so watch out!! It honestly feels like they have someone in house that contacts you so they can take your money then say never mind, they don’t want your services. You better off making signs for the corner or use nextdoor or even Craigslist. Only use this app if you don’t like make money and enjoy spending it instead.

I talked extensively with the contractor on the phone ahead of time. Very enthusiastic exchange. Even asked if I could arrive sooner on the designated meet-up date to make room for his potential additional opportunity. I agreed and showed up at the house one hour earlier. And despite my text messages, voicemails, and Thumbtack emails, he NEVER responded. Left me hanging in our last heatwave. Why ghost me? I expected a professional who could be adult enough to let me know that he was no longer interested. What good is all the supposed background check that Thumbtack reports they do, if the end result is no different than contacts obtained through Yelp or Houzz?

I was with Thumbtack Pro since 2016 - June 2021. I was actually a Top Pro for a few years up until Covid hit. I maintained nothing but 5 star reviews and kept my certifications updated. On Monday morning June 28, 2021 I logged into my account and it was fine. When I logged into my account later that afternoon my account was deactivated. I lost the ability to chat with someone and they closed their phone lines down until July 9th. I was able to email and send a report through their website, which I did both. I did send multiple emails one each day I got no response, they were extremely professional emails wanting a simple answer as to why my account was deactivated.
It is now business day 3 and still no response. While they may not reactivate my account I still want to understand why it was deactivated in the first place. I have worked really hard and just want an answer to my email. Thumbtack was a good service for both the Pros and the Customers, but what just happened gives me a completely different perspective. Business is business. I understand that but being professional is something completely different.

So Thumbtack filters reviews about themselves and gets to pick what the public sees. They hunt on three party review sites and give a auto response with fill in the blank spaces for names and topics. But they don't do the same for all of their service providers nor do they listen when a customer starts verbally attacking service providers using their site (except a chosen few), a drawn out lazy action from thumbtack begins. First, some people use freedom of speech too far and thumbtack allows freedom of speech whether the service provider is scammed out of money or no work is done, or in my case the customer didn't like the color of my company shirt and wrote a nasty messages to me through thumbtack which the anger from this person was more visible in each message and then made a angry lying review about my business. Thumbtack says try working with the customer, then they read the messages and still say, try working with the customer.
All the customer wanted was me to show up in person and fight, and thumbtack says freedom of speech and won't remove the review that a shirt color totally pissed this person off to the point of wanting to fight me? Now thumbtack has had people randomly makeup bad fake reviews and make fake job requests just to charge service providers lead prices. Thumbtack will probably answer with a auto response to this. But I can't write a review for a customer like this crazy one, but a customer can make a fake review about me and my business and thumbtack can't see how this customer treats people. Why believe thumbtack at all? They keep having lawyers make up new guidelines so they still get paid for real or fake job leads, with one word responses to get a refund (and the one word response is hardly ever used).
Now get ready. Thumbtack is giving customer phones to service providers, so now you will have service providers using your phone number so they can call you to get the money back for the job lead, and thumbtack makes more money. Go on Facebook or Google (or similar search engines) and find local contractors. And if you have a problem that makes you want to fight someone because of a shirt color, say what color.

I have recently been extremely disappointed with Thumbtack, which I used consistently and happily for the past two years. This has been my primary means of attracting new clients to my tutoring and editing business. It has enabled me to consistently attract a full time amount of freelance work. Very suddenly, my profile stopped showing up in search results, despite my being a top pro with a platinum status, having 23 five star reviews, and a perfect response record. I have reached out to customer service multiple times. In one week, I dropped from 860 listing views to 40.
I was told that "this just happens sometimes," and "it's part of the analytics," but that there was also nothing I could do to improve my situation aside from reaching out to potential customer's directly. I called customer service four different times and received four different responses. I was told by two representatives that they would connect me with a supervisor which never happened. I was told that this "isn't a tech issues" while also being told that I had done everything "perfectly" on my end and that my situation - no longer showing up in search results - was very puzzling. I used to frequently recommend Thumbtack to friends and family. I will not be recommending Thumbtack any longer. The contractors are very unreliable. I have been trying to hire a contractor for several weeks. I requested quotes from several and every time I think I got one, I either find out that he is unqualified or wants to get rich in the next few weeks. I had SKM handyman service in my house. The quote was $4000 to paint my 400 square feet backyard deck and 24 square feet front porch. But evidently, SKM does not quote the job but your zip code. $4000 for 4 hours of work. So, I had to wish him good luck with his next victim.
Another bad one is Complete handyman service. We reached a deal to paint the deck and porch as well as replace two interior doors and fix a couple of kitchen cabinet hinges. He showed up then he cleaned the area with my water hose. Then, he told me he will be back after he takes care of another job to start painting. I was kind of surprised as I was expecting power wash or cleaning the deck properly prior to painting. Nevertheless, I kept my mouth shut. He came back around 3 Pm and started painting. Two hours later he finished and asked me for the money. I asked about the doors. He responded that he will get them on June 14. I refused to pay him the entire amount unless he replaces the doors. So, he agreed to half.
The second day I noticed that some areas are not even painted. I sent him a text message letting him know. He responded that I should have reminded the day before. So, I asked him to send me the bar code of the paint so I can do it myself. He refused to give me the bar code for some reason! Then, he sent me a message that he will not be back. To be honest I was happy as his work is extremely poor. I am going to get some pictures and post them on social media in the next couple of day. Another contractor who postponed our appointment five times (not kidding). The fifth time, I had to wish him good luck on his next job. Why am I expected to HELP the person I am HIRING to do the very thing I cannot do: lift out of the box and assemble a very heavy item??? That ticked me off. This company will milk money from you as much as possible. They have very deceptive business practices and a sketchy at best "refund policy". I am currently not using this company because of these reasons. The "leads" they "sell" you are sold to multiple different contractors within the same work category. They will take the money directly from your account without asking or needing any authorization per their contract terms. If the "lead" even reads your initial contact text you're not eligible for a refund whether the "lead" replies or not.
When I was last using the service I was paying anywhere between $30-$50 per lead! Mind you, I'm not a high ticket contractor. To make things even worse, they don't let the consumer on the other end know that there are contractors paying good money just to send them a message in the hopes of bidding on their job. The majority of their "leads" are cheap homeowners kicking tires. You can literally have more success knocking on random doors or cold calling. You can and most likely will spend more money than you'll earn through their "service".
I would recommend any new business owner steer clear of this terrible, money hungry company. Any response you see from Thumbtack on these types of critical reviews is purely lip service, they take absolutely no action, the service only continues to get worse. I used to recommend this service to other contractors at one point, now I'm waiting to have the satisfaction of watching them go out of business, fingers crossed.
It's truly saddening to hear that you feel this way after using Thumbtack. We know it can be disheartening when you feel you're not seeing the return you previously had on our platform. Customer service is nonexistent. They have a help web site for you to use and response time is 3 days. What business can wait 3 days to speak with someone about a problem? If that is not bad enough they did not respond for 5 days after 5 attempts to contact them and they send a message that I have contacted the wrong department. A business that is interested in customer retention would forward to the proper department and make sure the customer gets the service they need. They have not reached out to explain the issue but they did have a sales person call me for no reason 2 weeks prior to this. You can do better. For what they charge you can deal with a company that advertises more to justify the higher cost of leads.

Thumbtack used to be a great place to find customers. There was a year that it was the only place I found customers. I used to love it. NOT ANYMORE!!! Their leads for sprinkler professionals used to be around $4-$6 a lead for repairs. And for installations they used to be around $8-$12 a lead. Now in about a 2-3 year timeframe a repair, spring activation, or winterizing is around $20 a lead. And an installation is around $40 a lead. So if a little old couple in my area wants me to activate their sprinkler system in the spring I can't break them a deal. With folks struggling I can't afford to give them a deal. All because Thumbtack is reaching into my family's pockets and taking 30-40% of a $50 service. I can't afford to be helpful.
I don't know if they overextended their financials as a company or what the situation is. But I WOULD NOT use them at their current pricing. It's ridiculous. Oh and did I forget to mention that if a customer responds but ghosts you then you still pay the $20-$40 a lead. With the old $4-$12 I could take some losses but this is out of control. I loved Thumbtack and trusted them. Shame on them for pulling the rug out from under their contractors and hard working professionals.

I've had to send a scan of my drivers lic, both sides and a copy of my state lic certification documents along with my phone number and they tell me it will take up to 14 days to correct. Chat with customer support is useless as is calling support. They say they're backed up in support and take issues in the order they come in. Obviously this company has very little respect for their customers or there's a high level of incompetence, likely both. What should be a matter of simply looking at an issue, verifying the customers ID and emailing the customer a link to correct the problem like most websites do, is beyond Thumbtack's ability.

The movers that we hired from this site were under experienced and charging above what professional movers charge. They first changed the moving time, which is unprofessional. Then when they arrived they arrived with only two people. Most pro movers come with a team of four people or more. I went off the reviews for this company and they must have paid for the reviews because the service was not good. The movers took 6 hours to move a tiny 2 bedroom apt. The manager allowed the one coworker to take a one hour break that I had to pay for.
They also showed up in an Enterprise Rental truck whereas most pros arrived in their own moving truck. I had multiple items broken and damaged thinking I was getting professional movers from this site. The reviews were not consistent with the work that was done from this company. I would not recommend anyone use this site for any services as they are promoting inexperienced people that are out for quick money.

Not only did thumbtack allow this client to slander our business but me as a person as well. Working with thumbtack we have learned that they do nothing to protect the pros even when providing documentation (FACTS) such as photos of on the spot job, a signed estimate sheet, witnesses, a copy of cease and desist letter sent to the client causing the complaint, and a video of belligerence of the client (rated X for language); Meanwhile stopping other clients from receiving services requested as well and preventing your business to continue with other clients that have nothing to do with the complaint causing you to lose money. 1 COMPLAINT.
With this said we still wanted to try and understand their policies to make things right and even though we have hired them for services (which makes me a client as well), we can easily discontinue their services but was under the false pretenses they could clearly see what the status was regarding this complaint and was wishing to move forward. The website is not clear about it to the clients looking for professionals. I sent a quote to a client about taking pictures for her birthday party, she replied to me only asking if I do video and I got charged $108. Although the support saw I was charged wrongly they don't want to refund me but give me a credit, which I don't want.
This is what they sent me: "However, since the request is about photography and she responded asking if you cover videography too and you only provide photography services, I'll go ahead and provide a refund for this lead back to your Thumbtack account because the job details were changed significantly. I'm sorry but we don't refund back to your card."

If we could give 0 stars we would. Thumbtack is a nightmare. We just started doing remote computer repairs and get a few jobs on Thumbtack (TT), not too many, spending hundreds a week on leads to nowhere. We understand to get leads you must spend money and you must land them OK. Check. Competition wise, we are just as good as anyone else, we had 2nd fastest responses and lowest price on the market. In our first message to client, we include direct link to our remote service. So customer has choice to continue service, read or disregard resulting in unread refund by TT Refunds are few and in between. If you don't land a client in the minute, they are gone, move on.
But TT allows anyone who even thinks their "hardware" problems will be repaired via the internet to reach out to multiple techs. And they do constantly, then clients are surprised you can’t help because your team is on the other side of the country as they are getting bombarded by other techs lol. Seems like a scam doesn’t it? There is no recourse other than unread refunds if you get lucky. Dozens and dozens of leads hundreds a week. We absorbed this and the learning curve for 3 months to generate more quality leads and we got only a few additional. Everyone paid except for 1 customer. tell you a story about Thumbtack leaving us in the dust. TT let us down every possible way. If not, I can bottom line it for you only 1 in 8-10 leads went to fruit and that is a bad return. Please don't be me.
We had a client asking for services asap on TT to connect their TeamViewer sessions and we did so quickly, due to past research on the problem. The client then terminated the remote session and disappeared into thin air on the TT platform. Messaging them to ask for payment was futile and fell on deaf ears, or did it? Wannabe crooks thought they did not have to pay and had no communications with us until we tracked them down. All we had was just a customer's name. And I have to say it was really weird name so... There is no way to know if the name is fake or not, TT. apparently use no vetting of customers. They do not care who or how many contacts you, as long as they get lead fees... direct from your credit card.
We reached out to TT and did not hear from them until 3rd day. Since there seemed to be no recourse or protection from TT, we took the matter off the TT platform. It took us two days to track cheats down to go figure, a million-dollar company in Minnesota. We asked nice and then after many other emails and demand letter, we finally got paid. We still had not heard from TT by then. This is not about the money it is about attempted robbery on the TT platform. These people were out to jack us until we caught them at their game. Where they surprised to hear from us. lol
When we finally heard from TT no thanks to them, we already got paid. Instead of protection of their tech pool which frankly we expected, we find TT instead, requested and received without authorization legally confidential, privileged emails made outside of their platform between my company and the client in pursuit of collection. My collection procedures and how I pursue an attempted interstate felon who terminated and disappeared on the TT platform are not their business. TT YOU WEREN’T THERE! Your personal information is seriously at risk! And no TT, you are not going to tell me about how to run a business TT way, and not interested in you monitoring after you left us flat. You are losing my money and provided no backup. Other way around, we leave you and pathetic support.
Just what are we supposed to do when we do not hear from anyone including you on your own platform for days, twiddle our thumbs and lay back just to take another one? Days later, the trust department gave us both a spanking. I got mine because TT does not like my approach to catch criminals on their system based on TT's receipt of unauthorized confidential, private personal information made outside of the platform. We requested a copy of these records to see what they claim against our records. A criminal when caught will say just about anything to get free. Who knows what is in there? Again, we have not heard from the trust department for 3 days. This is not support!
But when we saw they chose to allow this person(s) or whomever they next pretend to be right back on the TT platform to maybe run their game on another unsuspecting sap, it was crystal clear to us right then, TT are definitely not on pro's side, we were shocked, saddened, and decided time to leave TT platform madness for good. When it comes right down to it, as we found, TT is not going to be there to cover the professional's back and you are on your own waiting for days to hear back if something happens. I really do not think they care if you get robbed or get paid. There is no backup or recourse for the pro. It is like the wild, wild west up in there. While nowhere as bad as the venerable pirates over at HomeAdvisor, TT and their platform are plagued with problems as others have listed here. I have to say looking back I do not miss the dinging of my phone reminding me of another bad lead and the people at TT. Good riddance Thumbtack!

I am a small business owner in Hawaii and I have experienced from the company THUMBTACK such bad customer service and very shady business practices. They were charging my credit card for leads that I never got and when I called the company I was transferred 3-4 different people giving me the run-around. I basically said, "You are doing stuff illegally," and they agreed to only give me a portion back. I denied it and I told them I would fight them for stealing money out of my credit card. Now they won't answer my calls and last week, I got through but when I was transferred to some department they hung up. I have read other reviews and I have very similar experiences. Be very careful when you join this company. That's all I have to say....

I gave Thumbtack a shot for 6 months. Every single lead was saturated, and most of the leads that came in were not real. I was billed $149 for a lead that was fake and the person never responded. Per their terms that should be fully refundable. However, they decided not to refund me my money. If I could give them 0 stars I would. DO NOT waste your time or money with them - the leads are garbage and fake!

I am so angry with this company. Years ago it was a great company and I loved it. Wow. What a change. The latest that has happened to me is to have to pay because Thumbtack allows any client to do an exact match. The exact match this time? I am in CA and the student is in TX. So, I paid for a client who wants a tutor in home only. I have tried to tell Thumbtack that I want online only. They don't seem to want that. No way to refund me so they say. They really do take tons of money from my bank account. I have not gotten one single client from them in months, even though I reach out to many of them. Beware. Don't let them do it!

I hired a "professional" from Thumbtack who did a very poor job. Thumbtack was proactive after I left him a bad review and said that I could file for the guarantee. I put together all the information that I had with pictures but didn't realize until it was too late, that they had erased all of the earlier messages which would have proven that I hired him within 30days of contacting him (that's the requirement). They now tell me that because I can't prove it they won't honor the guarantee. Interestingly, there are messages to other pros that are older and are still retrievable! I found a couple messages to my mom that said I was going to lock him in, but, that too, was not good enough for them.
If you end up hiring somebody from thumbtack, be sure to screen print all of the communications as you go along. They also told me that they wouldn't allow the guy to advertise on there anymore, but he changed the company name and is still on there. They want me to now go after him in court, but that would cost as much to do as I'm asking for and there is no guarantee a judge will do anything for me. Also, be very careful, my mom hired a guy off thumbtack and he broke back into the house and stole her jewelry. Fortunately, the police were able to find hers, and others, at a pawn shop. He had a previous record (which apparently the guy I hired did too!

Thumbtack was recommended to me by another designer, he claimed he made a few bucks and it was worth checking out. I signed up, got reviews for my profile from my clients, and I started to get some direct leads. Direct leads require the client to seek out designers and then they contact those designers with the project they're needing completed. Huge problem here, YOU PAY FOR THE DIRECT LEAD without having any insight into the job or without knowing how many other designers the client contacted. If you don't A.) pay for the lead and B.) respond within four hours of the client reaching out, you're not eligible for a refund. If you happen to pay for the lead and contact the client within that four hour window, but get no response or the project just never takes off, you will receive a CREDITED refund to your THUMBTACK account. So, there are no refunds, only credited refunds.
I responded to two potential clients very quickly and never heard back from either, now I'm out $100 bucks, but hey at least I have 100 Thumbtack Dollars... I didn't know this was the procedure at Thumbtack, if I did I would've never signed up in the first place. General rule of thumb, you never pay for contact info or for some vaguely defined opportunity. No one is paying anyone anything, until a contract is drafted up and signed, and the work begins. They're very similar to Fiver, in that they are finding ways to profit off the design and client workflow process, without adding anything new or bettering anything. Waste of space, move on, and avoid at all costs.

I've been using Thumbtack for a couple years and was pretty happy with them. But I've had some recent experiences with them that show they really do not care about the pros who try to make a living using their site. I 100% support leaving honest reviews about pros, good or bad, including for myself. However, TT will let anyone leave a review for you once you have ANY contact with them. ANYONE can come along and completely destroy your reputation by leaving a false review, and thumbtack will do nothing about it because as long as you've had any contact with them, thumbtack thinks that qualifies as a valid review. Someone can ask you a single question 'do you work in the 12345 zip code area' and no matter how quickly you respond or what your response is, they can come back and leave you a 1 star review. And your reputation is effectively destroyed. Who is going to hire you when the first thing they see is a bad review?
If I wanted to be a horrible person, I could go on thumbtack right now and completely sabotage any pros who compete with me in the same market. They could do the same thing to me. And thumbtack will tell you it's a valid review. What is the point of working to have a 4.9 or 5.0 rating when anyone can destroy it in an instant and TT won't help. They also do not vet the leads in anyway. So unless you verify their identity someway AFTER you have paid for the lead, you have no way of knowing if someone is real or not. I'm sad to say I've stopped using them and don't think anyone else should start using them. You can spend thousands of dollars for leads and completely have your reputation destroyed in an instant.

I don’t even know where to start. I believe I have been using thumbtack pro for 5 to 6 years now. At first it was great, before home advisor bought the company, sometime in 2019, or possibly late 2018 (I can’t say that statement is completely timely accurate, as I heard it threw the grapevine but with the massive changes they made to the company I believe it).
At first leads would go to a handful of people in the area and those targeted could bid on the job, which was fair. The leads at that time, were at most, $7 per lead. Now I’ve been billed automatically up to $80 per lead without even agreeing to speak with the customer and I have been billed upwards of $80 for a job that realistically cost $150 to have done which ends up costing my company money. I’ve spoken with the CSR’s and I’ve made the multiple requests for the wrongful billing, but it falls on deaf ears and doesn’t go anywhere.
If by some miracle you get a compassionate worker, they do give the money back and it’s a credit to your account and Thumbtack takes that credit and randomly starts sending a lot of irrelevant job leads to get that money back plus more. They also have made their website to disable or hide your account from customers unless you turn on the automatic billing process.
Now with this billing process they take every little tiny part of leads and break them down by more categories so they can make more from you. For example: Let’s say you’re a general contractor, you set doors, hang drywall, remodel bathrooms, roofs, etc. You have to log into your account and turn on automatic payment on roughly a minimum amount per each category. So for example drywall requests you have to set your auto paid leads to roughly $70-$1000. Roofs, bathroom remodels, interior doors, exterior doors, and lock sets you have to set at minimum as well to get leads. This means you’re opening Thumbtack into your bank account for thousands of dollars a week. Another example of lead siphoning: you get a lead and they bill you $30 off the 70$ to do the job, that leaves you $40 and next week it goes back to $70 for the same lead type. These leads have been as high as $99.
Most of the clients we work with are real customers, but 9 time out 10, the job descriptions aren’t even close to what they tell you it is, which is relevant due someone requesting you because the forms they are filling out they aren’t always honest on, and they are forced to select certain categories to make it submittable, and we are charged for an interaction that wasn’t our fault.
In September 2020 I get a message on my Facebook business account from someone that was upset because Thumbtack would not allow them to get in contact with me on their website, which I found to be really odd. So I Google search my company, clicked on Thumbtack, attempted to request a quote, and I could not request a quote from myself. Thumbtack also would not take me to the form to fill out for what work I would have been requesting to be done. So I documented it and later received additional messages on Facebook from more people stating the same thing about not being able to request me, and they were pretty upset about it, because they wasted 2 hours searching for an alternate means to contact me, through no fault of my own, for a 5 min conversation.
I called thumbtack and made a complaint about it, but again, it fell on deaf ears. A little more time goes by and I get a call from a potential customer, who tells me that he is a software designer and stated verbatim: “You need to get rid of thumbtack. They are setting things up so people can not contact you for some reason”. I know someone reading this is going to say why didn’t they just request someone else. Well, I’m sure 1000s of people I didn’t have a chance to speak with probably did. But when you get that person that reads through all of your reviews and likes what you do and how you do it, they shouldn’t have to spend an additional two hours of their time just to try and find a means to contact me when they are already on Thumbtack.
Today I had a potential customer who was tentatively setting a set of days for me to possibly come see their home on, but I admittedly forgot to get back with them the day we’d agreed to just talk about scheduling a face to face meeting on, and they were allowed to give me a 1 star review stating that I had not showed up for an appointment that was never made or scheduled to be made. I again called thumbtack and they went into my message and read it, and thumbtack and told me I did not set a time or place to meet with the customer and didn’t even accept the job, but they refused to remove it, and instead said, “well with your reviews you could probably get it back if you wanted”. So now I’m here and looking to lawyer up and join this lawsuit to keep others from being victimized by Thumbtack.

I purchased some amount of credits and was using them for a while. Found it was too expensive but planned to return periodically. Time went by. When I logged into my account last month, they denied me access unless I agreed to a background check. I've nothing to hide but in principle did not want this company, or the company they hire to do that.
Thumbtack is denying me access to my account unless I submit to a background check. There was no background check requirement when I purchased the credits and I would not have if that had been their policy. They changed the policies and denied me access to my account, credits, or a refund, unless I submit to a personal inquiry.
I gave them money under agreement of their then-current policies. I would not have signed up for an account or prepaid credits under current policies and should not be held to (forced to) a personal inquiry performed by who knows who. A no-refund policy presumes the company continues to provide the service paid for. Thumbtack is trying to keep "Pros" credit-purchase balances but deny them access unless they submit to a background check that was not agreed to at the time of purchase.

Thumbtack will charge you whether you accept a lead or not. So in my case, I paint murals and do illustration gigs. I thought Thumbtack would be a good place to find more business. I accepted that you will be charged for contacted clients, whether you land the gig or not. That made sense. But then I started getting charged for getting contacted by clients, even when I didn't respond. They say since the client saw my profile on their website and reached out to me, they have the right to charge me. That doesn't make any sense. If it wasn't for that practice I would still use Thumbtack, but I don't want to be charged for some random person sending me an email if I do not respond.

Do not use Thumbtack by any means. I am a professional bookkeeper and I offer my services through a Thumbtack Pro profile. It's free for customers/clients to use and reach out to pros (services providers like me) but whenever I am contacted by a potential lead, I have to pay (also I have to pay automatically). My leads used to be about $6 to $8, which seems fair. I understand that I can't get 100% of leads to convert to paying clients, so if I lose a few dollars, that's fine. However Thumbtack has raised its price steadily over the past 1.5 years from April of 2019 to now, November 2020.
They expect you to pay automatically for leads, however they don't guarantee a phone number or email to contact the lead you paid for. So regardless of payment, you may never hear back from the person you quickly responded to. The average Pro in my profession responds in 4 hours, but I routinely respond in minutes. Yesterday they charged me $19.40. They didn't give me a phone number or a way to contact the client. So I paid $19.40 for literally nothing. Believe me when I tell you that you are much better off advertising elsewhere. Thumbtack is a total rip off.
Additionally, they taunt you with this: "Pros with at least 3 reviews get more leads." I have reviews on Google. But you can only import those reviews ONE time. So that means as my business grows, I have no way to show this on Thumbtack. I have to inconvenience my clients by asking them to leave another review just on Thumbtack because they don't allow me to import the Google reviews more than once. Why don't I delete the Google reviews that I imported and reimport them? Oh, that's a great question! Turns out I can't do that either. Isn't Thumbtack awesome?

I will start from the beginning. Your employee called my personal work looking for landscapers since the company was short on landscapers in my area. I said I would help out and talk to upper management and corporate (VPs) and recommend Thumbtack to get customers and to fulfill their needs as well. I spoke with someone with the last name Verkic I notified him I used Thumbtack as well for face painting and I enjoyed the service ok so far. We ended the conversation. He called me back and spoke to me again and said I spoke with my manager and he was interested in us helping you with your face painting leads. I was like "OH that is wonderful. Sure!" He told me that Thumbtack would give me $500 credit, and make me a priority (number #1 in leads). I thought this was awesome.
Well when they tell you some things are too good to be true. IT IS! This guy failed to mention I would be charged $300 to get this "credit." So I was charged $300 which has caused my account to overdraft and be short on my mortgage this month. DO YOUR EVEN RECORD YOUR CONVERSATIONS? This Verkic guy never went through the contract with me. Rushed me through and took advantage of my kindness. This is appalling as I have asked for a manager or upper management to call me and their excuse is emailing is quicker yet this is taking FOREVER and I am pretty sure I am going grey in the time period I have been waiting and stressing about this. You stole my money PERIOD.
I will continue to warn people about your company that you are scamming pros by making fake leads, and discriminate against African Americans by removing their accounts. I DO NOT want a response on here that you have contacted me to resolve this. YOU SEND ME COPY AND PASTED responses and it's a JOKE! Until I am refunded my $300 I WILL continue to post and warn others about your scam, and how your BILLIONAIRE CEO is robbing innocent people during a pandemic.

Thumbtack is the worst spam in so many levels. If I could give them a zero I would gladly do so. I am going to share my experience to bring light in their evil activities. Background information: I had been a loyal Thumbtack Pro client since 2018 with a 5 star rating.
All the way up to prior COVID-19, I was getting cheap clients, was not breaking event, however my goals was to build a portfolio, so I was willing to take the loss.
2 - Fake Clients and messages:After COVID-19 hit, 100% of my lead were just window shoppers, did not reply back even though I have an average of 20 minute response time, which is insanely quick given that their average top pro replies in 4 hours. Here I am a top rated professional, who has invested over $2000 to receive fake messages from window shopper with ZERO BOOKINGS.
3 - Open Robbery:I had specifically set my account to not accept inquiries from customers who need 5 or more hours of coverage and customers who are unsure of their budget. Guest what did I get charged for? You guessed it right, I was charged exactly for what I said I did not want.
4 - More Robbery:I had set my Thumbtack calendar no show me as unavailable for a few days I was traveling and had no internet access so customers won't reach out to me and I get AUTOMATICALLY CHARGE. Oh, yes, I forgot to mention that when customer reach out to you, even before you accept their request you GET CHARGED. So, guess what I got charged for? You guessed it, I was charged exactly for what I said I did not want.
5 - One sided policy:This is an understatement, because their entire operation is solely based on one-sided policies that ONLY benefit them and even when they contradict their own policies they will blame it on a newbie agent lack of training. If you don't believe me, simply take a look at their Pro policy.
6 - Customer Care who just don't care:I challenge you to call Thumbtack in an attempt to speak to someone about anything. They will never answer and you will literally listen to an automated message with only one option to send a text message to resolve whatever it is you are trying to take care of. However, when you finally out of frustration send a text message, their agent will deflect your questions, waste your time play dumb, blame you the caller and even contradict their own policy to justify their charges to your account.
I wish I had anything positive to say about dumping $2,000 for fake leads, one-sided policies and customer care who just don't about anything but steal your hard earned money.

I've been using the service since 2016 when it first started, whereas a Pro I would pay "per lead that I speak with". That's around $4 - $9 per lead. Today, I log in after COVID-19 and find out that Thumbtack has changed the rules to benefit them - they make you pay $68.05 per lead period. It no longer matters if you spoke to the lead or not. This totally contradicts what they have posted on their website which reads "You only pay if the customer replies to your message". They do not do what they are promising. It's false. It is misleading.
Let me say that once more: The new policy is you pay for any lead they send, $68.05 each lead, regardless if you get a chance to speak with the person (yet alone if you are hired for any job). It's a total scam. Any freelancer or contractors should not use this service they will be dumping hundreds of dollars down the drain and having nothing to show for it. Customer service? Non-existent. They only state that you pay for every lead $68.05 they deliver regardless if you are hired or talked to the lead.

I started using Thumbtack as a Pro at the beginning of the year. Thumbtack tries to come off as this truly transparent company and it's anything but. Every time a customer messages a pro, it charges the pro. So if you want to message 5 Pros, it's free for you but those 5 people have to pay for your message even if they don't get hired.
Thumbtack says that you only get charged for people who match the preferences on your profile, but that isn't true. I'm a photographer and I've had people message me for prices on a business headshot when they needed senior pictures. A customer wanted a "home" as a location for her shoot and my home isn't an option but I still charged $15 for the message. The list goes on and on. I have disputed these charges and received a generic "This lead doesn't qualify for a refund" e-mail without a customer service rep attached to it.
Once they charge you, even in the off chance that you get the lead refunded, it never goes back into your bank account. They will credit your Thumbtack Balance, but you will never see that money again. It doesn't explain that anywhere on the site. It also doesn't give a clear explanation of what is eligible to be refunded. There is no customer service chat. You can e-mail them or try to call them. I've e-mailed them twice and never received a response from a person. I've honestly probably spent more money than I've made on there and we're only halfway through the year.

Thumbtack did not handle the situation properly and the moving company is still moving people with them. The movers (3 Men and a Truck) used Venmo for the payment which I had never heard of before. And little did I know Venmo does not support Business transactions. Even my credit card company got involved and were very proactive. I would not recommend Thumbtack for any services you need. I would use a app or website that utilizes licensed movers or contractors for any work that I need done.

I have been selective on the project I've bid on and only on those that I can deliver quality images on. They claim to credit you for clients that don't follow through but they only keep a balance to spend on future bids. Their customized leads will cost you whether want them or not and some leads receive a generated quote that you'd never send, they're truly lowball numbers that I cannot honor. I had signed up for Thumbtack as a contractor providing services. No good fits in my area for more than 6 months, then, out of the blue, Thumbtack charges me for a job straight up, a job that was a very bad fit for me, and which I never had a chance to compete for. They claim that targeting was on for my account, I do not know why it was turned on, why it took six months for the first charge to go through, or why the targeting preferences were so off that it was impossible for me to accommodate that particular job. I can tell you there were were two profiles under my business account, and this by itself raises severe questions on how my account was set up.
In any case, Thumbtack initially agreed to refund the charges, only to find out later that they had not refunded the credit card that was charged, but they provided "store credit" that can only be used on future Thumbtack charges. Problem is that I am NOT planning on using Thumbtack EVER AGAIN. I absolutely refuse to conduct business with a company that insists on scamming $10.43 out of my pocket, through a charging glitch that gave it access to my credit card account, and is using all tricks in the unethical company playbook to get me to have future engagements with them by refusing to issue a direct refund to my credit card. Shameful bait and switch tactics that nobody should have to go through.

I intentionally give them a price below market value, offered discounts and additional services but still I didn’t get the job. The so-called clients didn’t even respond to my requests or questions. They send you fake leads and pocket your money.
In another occasion a client called me for an event guard service. Per our policy the clients should pay 50% of the total fee in advance but she wasn’t willing to pay. She didn’t hire us but left a negative review on Thumbtack. We urged Thumbtack to remove this review as it was irrelevant. However Thumbtack did not remove it because Thumbtack wants me to pump more money to get more reviews by new customers. The only way I get rid of this negative review is to get at least 10 new reviews on top of it. This is how they force you to spend more money just to hide an even irrelevant negative review. I hired a company "LATTA PAINT AND FLOOR" in the Birmingham, Alabama area for paint work in a house I had just purchased at the time. When Kristian Latta (owner) came out to my home, he sat on my sofa after painting for a few minutes. At this time, my 18 pound dog jumped up on the ottoman in front of him. He then reached his hand as far back as he could and struck her on her rear, causing her to fly from the ottoman and crash into the sofa head first. He then made a repulsive comment about what he had done that I can't post here out of concern that the review will be removed.
Because of what had happened, and how unstable he clearly is, I posted my 1 star review, and waited a year later until I moved out (and he didn't have my address) to post the text on my review. I recently was randomly thinking about my awful experience over this previous weekend, and decided to look up, “LATTA PAINT AND FLOOR” on Thumbtack, and found that the text of my review had been removed. I immediately called Thumbtack on Saturday 05/16/2020, and was advised by an automated system that they were closed on the weekends. I called them back first thing this morning, and was advised by rep Samantha that because the text was posted after the initial one star review was posted, the review team automatically comes in and removes the text from the review.
It should be noted that I had also spoken to reps at Thumbtack about this incident prior to the phone call this morning, and AT NO TIME did anyone ever say I had a, "Time Limit" to post the text on a review. I then demanded to speak to a supervisor. A supervisor named Alan came onto the phone. You could tell in his voice that he didn't care one bit about the situation. At one point he said that his hands were tied, and that there was nothing he could do. He was very heartless about the whole thing. This company will do whatever they can to keep making money. This even includes protecting animal abusers who call themselves, "Pros". I would strongly recommend that you find other avenues for hiring true professionals to come into your home and perform services. Especially if you care about your loved ones. This is sometimes due to customers feeling they can get discounts, or just simply not understanding what that price reflects."
Even tho it was way under my budget, I got charged for a lead because they said customer wants to negotiate, and for them it is reasonable to charge me for lead, taking my rights to decline the job because clients budget is under $400 ( requested 8h with all editing services, my budget is clearly set $150 per hour without editing. Basic math 8h x $150 per hour= $1200 without editing). How is this valid lead charge? How many times before did they actually charge me and I didn't noticed it? I spent a lot of time researching cleaning services on their site and found one I was particularly interested in. I clicked the button to move forward with communicating with this one "pro" with the expectation that this was a private communication. Instead, I found out from another pro who reached out to me that there's an "ad" with my information that was disseminated to many pros! Not happy! The pro that did reach out to me said she had to pay for my lead. I don't know if that's true but this is not good for the customer, nor the pros. They should have an option to allow the "job" to be disseminated to many or just be sent to the individual pro. It gives the pros the impression that the customers are flaky when all they wanted was to connect with the pros they were interested in.
I had checked my Settings when I set up the account and said yes to "allow pros to contact me" thinking that it was the pros that I selected, not just anyone. I didn't want to prevent the pros I selected from reaching out to me, so I left it turned on and that's evidently partially the problem. Why is it an all or nothing proposition? I also could not delete my "ad" so I was forced to deactivate my account because I didn't want the situation to get worse.
Additionally, I don't like that you can't look up a pro by their business name and that when you do a search, it only pulls back a max of 30 pros. No matter what I did today, I could not find the person who reached out to me unsolicited but I did see her yesterday when my results window was still up. So where did she go? How are they prioritizing who appears in that list of 30? Why are they holding back pro names? Is it "pay to play" gets preferential treatment? This takes choices away from the customers. EVERY single time you receive a message from a potential client, your debit card is immediately charged, and the potential client can choose someone else, you're still out that $10-$20 PER message. Most clients send messages to several pros to know their options, so there a LOT of money being generated for Thumbtack at the pro's expense by the clients actions.
Now here is the worst: When I paused the promotion service, (the ($10-$20 fee per message non sense) all of a sudden, when I would look up myself from my sister's phone, my profile read: "THIS PRO MIGHT NOT BE THE BEST MATCH FOR YOUR PROJECT." Thumbtack literally put this on my profile because I stopped paying their ridiculous fees. To whomever is considering using thumbtack, think it through. But even that doesn't mean new business or clients.
I've had a number of people mark me as hired but never even communicated with me and of course they never actually hired me. I started using Thumbtack as a Pro back in this summer and was a bit wary of paying for leads to potential customers before even getting any work. I paid for a few leads and then got hired and seemed like it was indeed a good deal. I even convinced friends and colleagues that it was a better deal than paying to advertise where you're not even necessarily reaching people. I'm for sure backtracking now because after only a few successful paid jobs (none since July! 5 months!) I've been paying for "leads" that go nowhere.
It seems like I'm actually now paying to directly reach absolutely no one as many of these paid leads the customer either stops responding after one message or never even responds altogether. This has me thinking that Thumbtack is potentially creating fake leads to continue getting paid. I get that potential clients would be put off by having to pay for reaching out to pros so in theory this model makes sense but I should not be shelling out 100's of dollars to these leads that end up nowhere. Honestly I'd rather give my money to traditional advertising as I'd have a better chance of reaching one single person than through Thumbtack.
I'm attaching what I've paid in leads plus my conversation thread to show I've only been hired a couple times. I've tallied up the charges minus the credits (they don't refund only give you a credit for successfully disputed leads) and I've netted $460 and paid $225.92. That's 50% that I've had to pay to them. You're much better off with something like Upwork where you know you're paying only max 20% and then even less after the first $500 with a client. Thumbtack is getting worse and worse. I started with them when they first began, many years ago. I had pretty good success, gained a lot of 5 star reviews (over 50). I've been in business for 25 years and Thumbtack was definetly one of the better lead generator services. Price per lead was fair, and if you got a fake lead or a dud, you didn't mind. Then the price increases started. Then the amount of pros who could purchase the lead started. $45.00 or more for a lead, sold to 15 contractors...NO GOOD !! So I started backing off from using them. I'd check my profile a few times a week. I'd still add photos of my work. I became top pro for 2 years in a row also. About 5 or so years ago I took a background check, and paid for it, so i could have the badge on my profile. I passed.
Now this past week I start getting emails that I must take a background check. So I do. I then get an email stating "pre adverse action" based on a driving while license suspended 5 years ago. Keeping in mind, my driving has nothing to do w/ the work I perform. My account has been deactivated, and I have no way of getting copies of my reviews, or pictures etc. Thumbtack took something pretty good and completely ruined it. I can't imagine very many contractors being able to remain on their site, and if they "pass" the background check, good luck getting them to pay outrageous lead fees and go up against 15 other contractors. Wish there was 1 good lead generator out there, as Homeadvisor sucks, and the rest do too. I guess it's good bye thumback.

Not sure if their software is broken or they are not vetting their customers well enough. I contacted their customer service and they refused to even refund a single lead. Looks like I will be moving to a competitor.

It's really sad that Thumbtack is ruining people's lives! I have been with them since 2011 and now I will be kicked off the website, unable to use all of the 5 star reviews I have obtained during the last 7 years (meaning it was all for nothing!) If, I don't pass their Background Check. This should have been required when I signed up and I would have went in another direction. How can they force this on someone who has been with them from day 1, since they began!?
1st. Just because someone is convicted of a crime doesn't mean they are guilty! I couldn't afford a better Attorney and most Lawyers, especially Public Defenders, just have their "clients" take a plea so that "you will have the best chance of getting the best result"... so they say, it's actually to make their jobs easier.
2nd. If someone has done something in their past it doesn't make them a bad person! Maybe they were trying to support themselves doing what they had to do. Exactly why people probably continue to sell drugs (once you have a criminal record no one wants to hire you or give you a second chance, but you still have to eat/ survive!).
3rd. Most people go into business for themselves for that exact reason They Can't Find Anyone To Hire Them! Apparently, Thumbtack doesn't care about people or their situations. I have completed more than 200 jobs (without incident!). I have NEVER harmed or stolen from ANYONE! I am an honest, good and hardworking person!
I was just with a friend who I shouldn't have been hanging around and was in the wrong place at the wrong time. He had drugs under the seat of his car, but wouldn't be honest about it being his so we were both charged. Not really fair, but cops don't care, more $! We as a Society need to change our ways of looking down on people for their pasts! I've spent 29 years trying to forget about mine, but now Thumbtack has found a way to remind me and throw it up in my face once again! Now, I just sit here feeling horrible, not knowing where to go from here since I have invested every dollar back into the business I created with Thumbtack. This isn't right of them, especially since I was honest and upfront with them from the beginning!

After reading all the 1 star reviews, I can relate. They deactivated my account over a fake 5 star review from someone I do not even know. Stay away, I only wished I would have read their reviews first.

I have been using them for a few years and have an impeccable record and many 4 and 5 star reviews. When I asked them if they would filter my leads to not be a particular kind (I do photography) they said they cannot do that so I told them I would have to decline to photograph a particular kind of wedding and they immediately deactivated me and refuses to even consider reinstatement or let me open another account of a different type and not photograph weddings. They love to practice discrimination in reverse. After a few years I can say they cater more to the customer (who pays nothing) than the vendor who pays for the leads and are the ones who keep them in business. Their employees also have been known to create fake leads to get you to answer and then have to pay with no refunds. Total scam of a business who practices discrimination against the vendor who has any religious or integrity convictions.

I gave them plenty of occasions to fix the lie. They let a client (probably a scammer or fake account) tell about my business. He left a 1-star review after he lied about hiring me. He said he "hired" me, and he never did, I never got paid. I never even knew his name. I just told him I wasn't doing the type of work he required but Thumbtack trusted him and with no prove confirmed that I was "hired by him" (that is not true and when asked them to show me prove they said they don't need any) and consequentially he was able to review me one start!
When I never had any interaction with him other than telling him I couldn't do his type of job. (and thumbtack was able to read out correspondence and confirmed to me he was not the type of job I was filtering with for my leads!) Not only they made me automatically pay for his lead because he lied about the type of job and made me spent 30$! But they allowed a person I paid 30$ (a fake person) to rate me over a service I never gave!? And I spent 1 hour with your customer service to be told it was okay. He can lie about me. I need to answer him in the review, and they didn't want to delete the fake review (nor give me back the money obviously, but that is their standard business).

Thumbtack charges a ridiculous fee to bring leads to vendors whom pay them regardless of the booking. Pros/vendors gets charged for Customers who dont even respond to the quote. These customers are on a shopping spree and the pros have to suffer. The more pros a customer picks, the more Thumbtack gets paid. Who knows if these customers are even real. Thumbtack could have their people create fake accounts and charge the vendors for it. They charge $20+ for each lead. They dont bring justice to pros when there is a dispute. They would take the customer’s side. Bottom line, not a good website for vendors.

I used Thumbtack twice in the past for Apt cleaning. I hired a very reliable and thorough company. Unfortunately they must have terminated their business as their phone was disconnected. I hired a new service with excellent reviews. When they were done I felt like I was pressured to give a 5 star review. I was told I had to do it right away. Also they used my cleaning products without telling me and took it with them. Also I saw scum on the kitchen floor. I had to remop the kitchen and bathroom 3 times to finally get it cleaned. They cleaned the carpet and the stains are now coming thru. So I will have to have them redone in a month or two with a professional.
My stove was wiped but they didn't wipe the burner trays and I don't think the oven was cleaned (which I have to go out and buy oven cleaner and do it myself) and not all my blinds were wiped. I also gave them a tip but I think I was charged at least $75 too much. Also the girl used my brush I had in the medicine cabinet, which I think is strange. It was full of black hair. I gave them the 5 stars but will never rehire them. I prob would have given 2 or 3 instead. Disappointed with Thumbtack.

Thumbtack was a good experience for about 1 week. They were responsive with issues and made changes or added incentives to make up for shortfalls. Starting week 2 they removed one of my reviews and would not tell me why (I still can't understand this, it makes no sense to me). At the end of week 2 I had a customer who was angry because I showed up on a search that was well outside my set operating area and I would have to charge for travel. I even suggested that the person search for a handyman within her area instead of using me. Her response was to call me a crook and leave me a 2 star review. I asked Thumbtack to remove the review and to report the customer so she would not ruin business for more people and they refused. Again, not a good representation to either the pro or the customer. I will be using a different service for leads now.

Very dishonest practice and they only reason they're in business they get cheap inconsiderate customers who don't care about hard working small businesses and mom and pop shops. This is a company that will offer leads for lessons by professional tutors. This is their tag line on their web-site: When you need to hire someone – a landscaper, a DJ, anyone – Thumbtack finds them for you for free. This is not true. There is a charge for every lead a tutor may receive. As a professional private tutor, I subscribed to their program for about two years. They claim that if you quote for a prospective student and the student responds to you; whether you get the job you (as the tutor) or not you are responsible for paying for the lead. If you do not respond to the prospective student while they have sent you the lead the company still charges you for the lead. I have had to call my credit card company in the past three months because I was charged for leads where I never spoke with or emailed a prospective student.
The Credit Card Company was kind enough to dismiss the cost based on my telling them about Thumbtack's tactics of inappropriate charges. Today, I closed my account because the company sends leads from areas I would not travel to, as they are too far. I recommend you do not work with them as a professional because of these various non-existent prospects.

Welcoming, to say the least. However, there are indications that this company was founded on fraudulent activity. Firstly, they advertise and market themselves as a great way to get into the services market and establish yourself in your local market. However, there are a few roadblocks that you'll come across after the joys and grandiosities of such an opportunity bear the fruits and ambitions to succeed. Example, you'll need three customer reviews before using their lead referrals, and they Ponzi your entry such that you'll have to get leads yourself first, a deal breaker if you're new in the market and establishing yourself online with a budget, as most fraudulent online marketing and lead referral companies work.
The company also harasses and assaults your account with belligerent tracking programs and assaults your account with belligerent tracking messages, threatening to deactivate and ban your entries for good with IP and Device tracking customer awareness programs that make you feel like you're in Salem all over again. (They track the IP addresses across all of the new entrants' devices and then try to terrorize them with permanent ban and IP Assaults, Threats, and Messages after they try to post the reviews themselves.)
Also disheartening, they auto-hack first instance reports between reviewers and companies. For example, if someone writes a bad review, they'll automatically and wantonly hack out the company, another fraudulent entity indicator. They also stalk accounts for re-entry rejection opportunities, a few months for one complainant I know. Although the company concept is good with good results for a lot of people, the above constituents of the user experience indicate seriously flawed business ethics and model practice with serious legal seditions that carry serious legal outcomes. I do not recommend this company at all, and recommend legal subpoena for thorough examination for further insight into the extent of the company's criminal activity.

You pricing on leads is overpriced. Your "CLIENTS/PROS" are the reason you are in business because we use your services to find our own clients. However, I do not believe we should be charged unless we are hired by the clients on Thumbtack. It isn't fair that a client can ask multiple PROS for quotes and we are all charged but only one is hired. Charge the PRO who is actually hired not everyone involved. It isn't fair and a BIG reason other Pros have told me they leave and go to your competitors sites. Also, Please change your charging strategy for lawn care. Most lawns are 25-35 dollars per mow. It isn't fair to charge a PRO 3-7 dollars. That leaves us no money for profit after we cover overhead especially if we don't get the job but you still charged us.

They rescheduled and came out to cut down some trees and did amazing work. I called/emailed Thumbtack asking them to let me re-edit my review and they keep denying my request. There is a gaping hole underneath the bathroom vanity that, unless you get on your knees and look, you would not see. Had to paint one end of the bathroom door because only the front and back of the door and the other end where the hardware goes was painted.
There are other things that, below the surface, is not seen at a glance. Also, there was damage done to the bottom of my vanity that was not mentioned. Called, Calvin, the contractor, made an appointment for him to come see my concerns and discuss repair or monetary compensation. He never showed nor did he answer my text. In essence, they did a good job, but don't look beyond the "surface" of their work because you would be disappointed.

When you call they pacify you and do nothing to help. If a customer makes a complaint they don't try to contact you at all to get both sides. They just completely deactivate your account???

Thumbtack is a marketing service, not a provider of tax preparation, window installation, or anything else. So, if someone reviews the services they received, one must understand that is a review of a company using Thumbtack. You have good companies, bad companies, and some in-between. Thumbtack is happy to take the money of any pro who wants to use its site. You should evaluate the pro by looking at their website, qualifications and reviews, outside of Thumbtack.
I am a Pro user- an accountant. A CPA. A damn good one. I am very frustrated with the users on Thumbtack and how easy TT has made it for these users to just press a button and charge me without any interest in communicating beyond that. Do some of these people contact me? Sure. Sometimes, I will even get an intelligent person who understands the value of my services. But, more often than not, I will simply be charged and the person won't even bother to contact me beyond pressing a button to ask for my availability.
Why would Thumbtack change this? Its revenue is driven by charging pros for leads, not be helping those leads be successful. So, the short of it is that the consumer of Thumbtack is 100% the pros who use it. If you are a Pro and want more business, do Thumbtack only if you can handle being ghosted 95% of the time. If you are a customer looking for a pro on Thumbtack, please be considerate and don't press a button to charge us if you don't really mean it.

Eventually I think they got tired of me passing up leads I didn’t feel fit my target client criteria, so I believe they sent a fake lead (bot) to me who seemed interested but too politically correct to sound real. It was just different than all the many clients I talk to on a day to day basis. We exchanged messages and he eventually told me he’d get back to me later in the day. I was contacted via phone by a sales representative for Thumbtack asking me if I wanted to try out their "new" lead generation process (before, professionals would have to send proposals to a prospect when a notification would pop up about a potential job). With the new way, the consumers would now contact the professional if their search for service matched the professional's profile.
Anyway, I told this sales rep Brad, that I only offered COMMERCIAL video services for companies looking to scale their business through video. He assured me that there were plenty of consumers on Thumbtack looking for my services and that if I invested $200.00 they would match me (Thumbtack charges per lead). A month and a half goes by and I haven't gotten a single lead even though my profile was perfect according to their "recommendations."
Reviews are a big part of having your profile stand out on Thumbtack, so they give you some advice on how to get more: "You can just ask people you know to give you a 5 star review who haven't ever hired you before." I'm not making this up. They literally allow false reviews from people to rank you higher in your search.
Conclusion: Thumbtack uses deceptive sales techniques to draw professionals in and then when you tell them you were lied to because your audience doesn't exist on their platform, they tell you it's non-refundable. I guess I complained enough that the customer service guy finally put in a request and then refunded my money after about 2 months. So I have been a customer of Thumbtack for almost three years with my home appliance repair business. Today I received an email stating my account has been suspended. That is after almost 3 years of paying $300 - $500 a month with them. The drama started when I received a 1 star review on my profile. Mind you, I had 100 reviews of which 95% were 5 star, 4% were 4 star, and 1% were 1 star. When I received the one star review the Thumbtack market place trust and safety team contacted me by email about the review asking for any and all documentation I had about the job in question. I ignored the request as Thumbtack is a lead generation service I PAY for and not a partner in my business. They do not have the right to ask for nor expect to see my private business records and it would be negligent of me to release them to Thumbtack in violation of my customer's expectation of privacy.
That didn’t seem to matter to the geniuses at Thumbtack though. After ignoring their first email they sent me a second to INSTRUCT me to comply with their demand. They stated I had 24 hours to comply or they would “reevaluate” my account. So I responded to the email. I told them that I would in no way comply with their demand and that they were way over stepping their lane as I paid them for one thing - lead generation. I told them that once they sent me a lead and I paid for it that lead became MY customer not theirs and they are not entitled to any information between me and my customer in any form. They then sent me another email stating that I had agreed to their “terms of service” which I guess they believe trumps the law and ethical practices of business in regards to the handling of customers private transaction information. I again stated that I could not and would not comply with their demands.
Today I received an email stating that my account has been suspended until I comply with their demands. How stupid are these guys at Thumbtack? Do they think that I only have one lead generation service? Do they think that they can arbitrarily position themselves into my business as if they have a stake in my company? Do they think I require THEM to conduct my business? They seem to have forgotten who their customers are. I paid them for a lead generation service. That makes me their customer. How do they treat their customers who will not let them entangle themselves in areas they don’t belong? They get rid of them. They shut off their account and hide from them. They make demands they know can’t be given in to and then stamp their feet like children when confronted.
Don’t use Thumbtack. I have just lost 3 years of time, money, and reviews because they think they should be able to give orders to their customers as if they are employees. I do not work for you Thumbtack, you work for me. When you remember that you might stop getting these negative reviews about your service. I went to Lowe’s, got a kit to handle such repairs (cost less than $30), and am now doing a job I was willing to pay considerably more for someone else to do, and I continue to get a steady stream of emails from Thumbtack telling me I need to select more "pros" to do the job. There is no way to turn them off, other than implement a spam blocker and tag them with it.
The Thumbtack website has no way to contact the Thumbtack machine, other than to request additional "candidate pros" — here's a useful tip for the reader: If a website offering services of any sort does not include an obvious way (text msg, email, snail mail, phone) to contact them to say "never mind", the risks of dealing with them are higher than the rewards.

Thumbtack does not care about the Safety of its Pros. On Saturday 08/24/2019, I contacted Thumbtack in regards to a review that was posted that was not legitimate, and also had come from a customer on their platform. That threatened my staff, harrassed my staff outside of the platform and on the platform. I ended up having to file 2 separate police reports. After calling in on the 24th and being lied to that they were going to resolve the issues, and take action against the customer. Which never happened. I then was repeatedly lied to through email by 4 different people. To then be told that they apologize and are glad that I reached out to my local authorities but there was absolutely nothing they could. So in other words as long as they can take your money for leads, your safety means absolutely nothing to them at all.

Vic the Magician, who operates in Balto/DC area indicated he would be happy to perform at my grandson's birthday. He indicated his show was "appropriate for all ages" and would include stuff from Harry Potter. Sounded good and all looked forward to this. Then, once Vick was informed that most of the adults at the party were immigrants from Central America, all however, bi-lingual and all US Citizens Vick indicated he was not able to perform because his show was aimed at adults. I have emails documenting all this. Pretty apparent this magician Vick did a complete turnaround because the adults were Latinos. Needless to say my wife was hurt but also angry....ergo...why I am filing this complaint. It was short notice but Vick had stated he would be happy to perform. Thumbtack offers little option to file a complaint except by telephone where everything they say is undocumented.
Hi Brian,
Thanks for sharing your experience.
We’re sorry to hear about the situation with the performer and understand how disappointing and frustrating this must have been. We take concerns about fairness and inclusivity seriously. Feedback like yours helps us improve our platform and the pros we work with. For any unresolved issues, we encourage reaching out to our support team so they can review the situation further.

Thumbtack doesn't care about the small business owner. All it cares about is making money by any means necessary. It's just like HomeAdvisor or Angie's List. As a small business owner, you get charged a fee regardless if you get the job or not. Fees range from $30+ just for communicating with a client. Doesn't matter if you are hired, every contractor that comes into contact with a client gets charged a fee. THAT'S STEALING!!! If I get the job, then fine, charge me. But to charge me $30 to speak with a client and then not get the job because the services requested aren't provided by my business, is STEALING!!

I had over 50 5 star reviews. I wrote them to say that a man who had never worked with me posted nasty comments and gave me a 1 star review, dropping my overall rating. I asked customer support if they would please remove his participation from my profile. I referred them to the exchanges between this man and me to verify what I told them, information that they accessed. They then refused my request to delete this man's lies, I argued, they threw me off their site. Good riddance.

This is the worst Pro Services I’ve ever dealt with. They price accordingly to the amount of your bid. They don’t give any customers info that you paid for like address to do the job or a phone number to call the customers. How are you supposed to win a job that way. Beware Pro Consumers, I would really look into this business before putting yours on their site.

I was with Thumbtack for 6 months. I’ve paid them over $15,000 in leads! They are a scam! They overcharged for leads. Refused to refund for leads. There was no way I could help the person because of location or services I offered!

This company may be good for customers, but if you're using this company as a pro, as in you're offering a service, it's absolutely nonsense. You will spend $90 to make $100. EVERY single time you receive a message from a potential client, your debit card is immediately charged, and the potential client can choose someone else. You're still out that $10-$20 PER message. Most clients send messages to several pros to know their options, so there a LOT of money being generated for Thumbtack at the pros expense by the client's actions.
Now here is the worst: When I paused the promotion service, the ($10-$20 fee per message nonsense) all of a sudden, when I would look up myself from my sister's phone, my profile read: "THIS PRO MIGHT NOT BE THE BEST MATCH FOR YOUR PROJECT." Thumbtack literally put this on my profile because I stopped paying their ridiculous fees. To whomever is considering using Thumbtack, think it through, as a pro, you will be treated like a king or queen until you stop paying, all the while being squeezed for your money, and as a customer, you will enjoy using it, but for every time you message a pro, you are making that pro pay a fee to Thumbtack, and they're not cheap, it adds up quick. It's a really stupid system.

I have worked with Thumbtack for about 5 years. When I first came aboard they were wonderful. I cherry pick my leads. It was wonderful some 5 years ago. I had to shut down the business and decided to get back to it. I put my card on file however, when I went to check my account I was -$40. I was stunned because I have never had my account go negative. When I went to the back I found that just like my email there were sheets of thumbtack withdrawals and I signed up 7/29 and this occurred on 7/30. I had to go under advisement as to how to handle it. Moreover, I never saw any leads come in. Just suggestions that I should look into certain leads. This is not the same company that they were and it is outrageous. Do Not Do business with this company!!!

This site is a rip-off. Really expensive leads whether you get hired or not, NO screening of leads so if someone is just looking for "ideas" you still pay for the lead, no phone number to customer service, they bury the fees so you have to go hunting to find them, zero responsiveness to providers. Don't waste your money.

I hired a contractor from Thumbtack to do an extension to my driveway. The contractor took more than $1,000 from me and went AWOL. I contacted Thumbtack and they told me that they do not do any verification of the contractor's license, business registration or their criminal or fraud background. Thumbtack is just an advertising platform and anyone (even a criminal) can register with false documentation and rip off customers. Thumbtack also said they will not be able to share any details about the contractor that will enable me to file a lawsuit. I would stay away from Thumbtack and go to Angie's List or HomeAdvisor.

Do not use Thumbtack if you're a professional. They charge you between $10 and $50 for a lead that may never even respond to you, then refuse to give a refund if the 'lead' never responds because it's not 'in their policy'. As a professional, STAY AWAY. Do not give your hard earned money to Thumbtack, they'll just take and take with nothing in return.

Wow, utter disappointment doesn't come close to my experience on thumbtack. Why is this company still around? Why are there people working on this dumb product?
Reasons for failure:
1. Quotes were haphazard and take forever to respond or finalize.2. Unclear guidelines/benchmarks on expected quality of services by different price points; how do you know why one vendor's quote is pricier than another?
3. Vendors want to work directly with you offline anyway.
4. Unstructured data; services are inconsistent in quality and offerings.
Super confusing business model; will never use again. Please SHUT DOWN THIS DUMP!!!
