Based on my some months of experience using the app I can describe this app as a ''Legal way to scam subcontractors money". I several times I noticed if a customer choose only you, little later you can see how many subcontractors that customer contacted. This app shows to the customer, "Hey there are other available subcontractors" to send them the same lead to get more money by charging the same amount of money to several subcontractors. That is how they triggered customers to contact with several handymen for the same job.
Some customers post theirs jobs then never responds. Who knows those customers are AI generated, fake customers or not. I asked several times to refund, but I am ignored. App representative kept advertising this APP to me instead of to refund my money. Only one or two times refunded me not to my directly to debit card. It says "We refund your money as a courtesy credit." What the ** is that? When they charge for the leads they directly charge from your credit or debit card but when money refunded they don't refund it directly to your bank. What a ** smart Idea?
They required you to connect your debit or credit card to the account, whenever they send leads automatically you are charged. You guys so smart? Recently app added instant book stuff and started charging much more money for each lead which even doesn't worth to try it. Since then I lost almost $500 a week. That made me deactivate this App and write this review! Thumbtack App is an App to cow Subcontractors' money a legal way of scamming. Just before using it think twice and be ready to lose your hard work earned money. Just don't use it. Period!

Thumbtack charged me for a false lead they sent me. The alleged customer said she never requested service from thumbtack. After I requested a refund, they deleted me from their site without refunding my money they stole. They charge up to $90 a job. I called them and got someone from India?? Thumbtack also refuses to let their Pro's list their minimum number of hours or other minimum amount of payment for traveling. They sent me a lead to someone who ordered my services (and yes, thumbtack gouged my debit card for the lead). The customer wanted 2 licensed professionals to travel 30 miles and work for a total of $75.00 (we would normally charge $300.00 for the job). Thumbtack debited my card for their share before even sending me the lead. I lost $225.00 on that job. WHAT A SCAM!! DO NOT USE THUMBTACK, THEY RIP OFF, AND STEAL FROM, THE PEOPLE ON THEIR SITE THAT OFFER SERVICES.

Excellent handyman service, but from my previous experience from using Thumbtack services, I thought the handyman service cost I hired was for the entire service, not per hour. My final cost was triple what I thought it would be. ENSURE to ask beforehand if your project cost is for the entire service or per hour when you hire someone through Thumbtack!

I signed up as a Pro with Thumbtack for a period of about 24 hours to see what this platform was like. I have been a website designer and offered freelance services for 20 years and I have never witnessed anything like Thumbtack. They apparently charge users for each lead but do not disclose what the job is before you get the lead or how much a lead will cost. Then, once they send you a "lead" which doesn't even guarantee you will be hired, they insisted I enter my credit card info. When I clicked on the lead that was sent to me, I saw that it was $195!!! I made NO contact with the customer nor did he contact me! I did nothing at all on that platform and did no business with anyone.
As soon as I saw the cost, I shut down my account and never even entered my CC details. Thumbtack is refusing to let me close my account. They are trying to charge me for services I did not ever use. If you are a service provider, DO NOT even check out their platform. They are corrupt and crooked and I will report this email they sent me everywhere I can.

I suspected that this was scam when I was charged for a lead that was kindly weird, she asked specific questions but it was in an authoritative way, if you have experience with scams, that's how scammers behave. I was charged for two leads, I tried to decrease the lead amount to 0 and for some reason I thought was done before the second lead was charged but it was not. I think they let you be on the platform for a period of month and then start sending you Scam leads on the 2nd month. Do not get this app as a Thumbtack if you don't want to waste your money. Leads are not real leads and the criteria selection is not real. They charge you for "potential leads."

Thumbtack, is an UNSCRUPULOUS cash cow, who does not care about their professionals. I have dealt with Thumbtack for about three years on and off. Each time I went back, I thought things would be different. So every year when I deactivate my account, I no longer have access to print out my receipts. So, trying to reach someone (person) is a total NIGHTMARE! I have never been so frustrated in my life dealing with customer service. My experience dealing with thumbtack so far has been unscrupulous. The last draw is when I actually called a 415 2992769 number and to my surprise someone answered, but quickly told me that he would transfer me over to someone who could help me. Well back to the recording and the unreachable.
They finally responded with someone overseas. The young lady genuinely wanted to help me, but it was clear to me, when I got off the phone with her, I could not retrieve my information from the app. My last client with Thumbtack cost me $128, because, for some reason, since the client checked monthly, which is all they solely rely upon. Which turned out to be a mistake, because the client did not click monthly. So needless to say the job cost $150. So, I lost 100%. Anyhow the biggest issue that I have is that the way do not care about their contractors and professionals, people can write anything they like about us, and they erase our response, and tell us that they cannot take down the customer review. All I can say is unscrupulous. I suggest a CLASS-ACTION lawsuit on this company, anyone interested? Email me: **. Thank you.

I do not recommend Thumbtack.com for Pro because they supposedly charge you for direct leads. They overcharge the leads and they do not care that the direct customer do not answer or if the phone number no longer works. Multiple times I try contacting customer service but they do not response. I tried to speak to a live representative over an hour and no one responded.

I don't even know where to start... However, be ready to spend your money on some real, some SCAM leads and yes some people will hire you but most of the leads you get you will pay for and YOU WILL BE IGNORED, you will be contacted for question inquires only, and you will be wrongly contacted due to the poor Thumbtack's advertising information to the leads and guess what, they will refund you 1 out of 5 times requested for a refund!
As a service provider in Wardrobe Consulting field I offer traditional and virtual services, but Thumbtack here will show your profile (if you offer remote services) as "physically available in Atlantic City, NJ" when you're based in a completely different area/state, so any person who needs a Personal Stylist (your service) in person will reach out to you just to tell you "Ohh I thought you were located in my area as it shows", and yes you pay for this even tho Thumbtack advertised your profile wrongly just to charge you.
Anyone can give you reviews based on just consultation or your very first response to the request so you have to be clever with your words in any occasion, mind you Thumbtack offers a few different ways to ask your clients for a review: through scheduling calendar date, link that you can copy and via email, the copy link option is super quick and easy for everyone and yet when your client leaves a review through this feature which is I REPEAT a feature the platform itself offers, your review won't be verified but the client is actually someone you connected with through the platform. PLEASE THUMBTACK MAKE IT MAKE SENSE!!!! If you are starting to advertise your business on this platform, set your pricing high so people take you seriously, always take the deposit and have it all in writing. If anyone has a better platform to suggest please do so. Thank you!

After a couple hundred dollars spent for instant books with no reply, bookings and the person didn't know they book and when you send a quote it is not read by the party which leads me to believe they are fake. No answers for square footage, pictures of job, etc. Just my quote to them. They are being blocked or not being sent. No joke. No exaggeration. No human being responds to any request for help on this platform. There is no email address or phone number available. There are serious glitches in the platform administration. The help bot just runs you in circles and finally a dead end with "Let me find someone to help you." Very short. Thumbtack was a great starter company that had many flaws. I know. I'm a pro who gave them several advise on being legal in the East Coast and in our type of services. They are now dishonest, thieves, electronic money fraud, e-mail fraud, false advertising, not ever vetting leads, did not vet the pros for a few years, price gauging. I would even say criminals index the Rico-Act. A class Act lawsuit is coming in the near future. You want in send us emails. This is big-time criminal fraud. Evidences? I have plenty. Email me. Ok so here's my experience: I was approached by a member of their sales team, Greg was his name. He was very convincing, spouting all these promising statistics and how the leads they get convert well because they are supposedly leads coming in that are pre-qualified and already interested in our services. So I paid the $200 deposit and then some, set up probably one of the nicest looking profiles and portfolios and imported our reviews on there. Greg was very responsive and followed up often at first to get me on board, then after I paid them I never got much of another response from him or their customer service.
I called and waited on the phone for a long time to try and talk to someone. Every 60 seconds or so you get a prompt asking you if you'd like to push 2 to remain on the line waiting. I guess this is to annoy you and get you to hang up after you get tired of pushing number 2 on your phone. I eventually gave in and opted for their text messaging support. About 5 hours later someone actually came on and responded. He was very unhelpful and just spouted their policies at me and then asked me if he could help me with anything else, as if he actually helped with anything at all. He then didn't like me asking for help and decided to leave fast because he had more important things to go do.
So let's back up a second and discuss what led me to actually call them after 2 weeks... They don't explain things very well when they get your money and disappear. How to use their platform and actually be seen on it so after 2 weeks of no leads, we decided to view it as a customer would and see what was wrong. What we found, contradicted everything Greg was telling me. He told me to set our competition low with the slider all the way to the left. This resulted in 0 leads over 2 weeks. He also had informed me of what the average lead prices were in order to get me interested and sign up, which is also extremely misleading because you have to raise your bid to a competitive rate to get leads in.
So we did that and raised our bids and guess what happened next? We got flooded in so many leads that it used up our entire budget immediately and gave us 12 leads. We thought omg, what a huge success! I was so excited over this. Then what happened next was very discouraging... The very first lead actually responded and seemed legit. (I suspect they have a team they hire to reach out to newly onboarded pros to make their first lead seem legit. The reason I believe this is because they acted in an unnatural manner of what you would expect from someone that's truly an interested person looking for your service. The person who put in for the lead had to call someone else they knew that was apparently interested in the service and that person did not seem all that available. We rescheduled a Zoom call to meet and discuss things more after he acted interested and we were ghosted after that and never heard from them again.)
The other 11 leads? Half of them were bad numbers or disconnected numbers. None of them responded on Thumbtack to the message and none of them responded in text or answered their phones in over 4 calls each. I reached out for refunds on a few and they decided to give me 2 courtesy refunds even though they stated it was against policy. They claimed to do this because I'm a new member. 4 more leads came in and all were the same issue. Cant contact them and no responses.
So explain to me how it's possible that 16 people reached out to us because they were interested in our services, actually chose a service they wanted with the pricing attached to it and only contacted 2 pros, the other of which didn't respond to most of the leads we got. I responded to all mine within 30 seconds of them sending the lead our way. Followed up 3 times and did everything you can imagine to try and reach them. We have arguably the best portfolio on thumbtack for our local area. We respond fast and were legit.
I attached one of the so called leads we received and they didn't even create any lead from thumbtack. (I removed their number for privacy reasons.) So yes, this site and service is a total sham. I also found online how they were just fined 7.5 million dollars for sending fake leads to people. Also another article how they are going into the real estate business and seem to be abandoning this platform. Perhaps they are just cashing in as much as possible knowing they are going out of business. After all, screwing people over and taking their money is a lucrative business venture if the cost of litigation is far less than what is earned via the scam. I don't know why our country allows crooked CEOs to work the system like this. This type of behavior should not be encouraged.
In almost all cases I've seen, when a customer is reaching out to you, they are responsive and interested in your service 90% of the time. 16 leads reached out directly to me and I was only able to speak to 1 questionably fake one? Proof that they don't actually gather legitimate leads. If this isn't convincing evidence then I don't know what is. They consider anything they send you to be a legitimate lead they charge for even if they don't respond, don't provide a working number and never even heard of your service and didn't request anything. Unbelievable for a company valued over a billion dollars. How do you explain yourselves thumbtack? If there's a class action lawsuit happening, please sign me up for it as well.

I contacted Thumbtack's customer service and was told the review violated the code of conduct and they are unable to tell me exactly how because they don’t want customers finding ways around it. I have messages in text from them to prove they told me this. After sending a screen shot of word for word what the review was they still continued to say the review violated the code of conduct and they would not repost it. Here is what the review said….”Joey arrived on time and explained every step he would be executing during his visit. He took the time to answer all of my questions and was very kind. He made me aware of a matter he discovered that would need to be addressed soon.” Tell me how this review can violate any code of conduct?! Thumbstack a big scam. I do not recommend Thumbstack to any PRO; it is quite simply an organized scam; they send you direct leads and charge you for them when in reality it amounts to nothing; and when you request a refund, they reimburse you in your Thumbstack account and recharge them for leads that are still fictitious. Customer service is also a scam; you call a number and from a certain moment, they tell you that the rest will be done by text messages; and at the end of the procedure by text message, they tell you that someone will contact you and in fact no one will not contact you; They almost emptied our bank account with GO2 Bank.

I've been on Thumbtack as a Pro for 3 years and my experience has gone from pretty good (with some frustrations) to horrible. I worked really hard as a life coach and counselor and earned my Top Pro badge very quickly. On average I would get 5-15 leads a week. Keep in mind that 9 out of 10 of these leads will be wrong for my service but I was still able to help a lot of people, as that's the reason I'm providing this service and not for money. I was one of the first few on the top. I have 67 five-star reviews and was hired 152 times on Thumbtack.
As Thumbtack started to make changes, like not refunding for the leads who didn't respond in 48 hours, slowly increasing the price, and making refunds extremely difficult, things started to get worse and worse. The price per lead went from under $6 to $9 to $15 and then to $76! It costs me $76 in my category to show up on top or close to the top where I was organically as a result of hard and consistent work.
The amount you're willing to pay for a lead is the only thing that moves you closer or further from the top of the first page. How good you are has very little to do with it. Someone with 4 stars and a fraction of the reviews I have shows up above me, just because they pay more. If I pay their minimum price per lead - $15, my profile ends up on the 6th or 7th page where no one ever sees it, and I get literally 0 views. Hence, I got 0 leads in months. From 10 a week to 0 in months, without me changing anything and Thumbtack changing a lot.
Just to try I decided to set the lead price to $50, I showed up on the first page and sure enough, I got a lead shortly. And sure enough, it was a useless lead, maybe even fake. After everything I experienced with this company, I know they are easily capable of it. And when it seemed that my experience couldn't get worse, it did. Of course, I contacted Thumbtack multiple times and voiced my concerns, and was always thanked for my "valuable" feedback, but of course, it did absolutely nothing and things continued to get worse. But today, since I was so upset, I wanted to call them maybe the very last time, but guess what, they are unavailable until the 18th, which is 5 days. You can't reach them by phone, chat, or email for any reason. Seriously? After charging ridiculous prices, they can't afford basic customer service?
The way Thumbtack is conducting their business is unethical, lacks any sense of integrity, and is turning into a classic scam. I read someone is taking them to court and trying to get them out of business - at this point, I wish they succeed. The problem is they will never be punished anyway. The worse that will happen to them is that they will close this business, and go open another one and do the same machinations under a different name. Can we do something about that?
As for the lead price, basically, they are selling ads without calling them ads. What do you call it when you pay to show above those who should be there organically? It's called cheating or at least you do it in an ethical way and mark them as ads. All platforms sell ads, Google, Yelp, Amazon, Etsy - but the consumer has a right to know if a business or a product is paying more to show up on the top. So Thumbtack not only is lying to the Pros by saying that it's not just about how much we're paying because it is the only thing that matters and it's very easy to prove, but they are also lying to the customers - not telling them that the pro is on the top or closer to it because they are paying more.
How would you feel if all the platforms lied about ads and you would only see the businesses on the first few pages that are paying more and you didn't know about it? Wouldn't you feel deceived? I just hope that there are enough people who care about justice and are willing to speak up and do something about it. Thank you for reading, I hope it helps people make wiser decisions.

Then they decline all requests for refund even if you send them proof. TOTAL RIP OFF! First, this review is based solely on our experience with this platform and other platforms like it. We make no representation for anyone or anything beyond ourselves and the relationship we had with this organization. I'll make this as concise as possible - We are a Private Investigations firm in the United States. We joined Thumbtack as a marketing ploy to gather more leads for our state. As licensed professionals, we can only work on cases that ORIGINATE in the state for which we are licensed. Outside cases must be in states with reciprocity to our state or we must subcontract with a PI who is licensed in that state.
After carefully telling Thumbtacks system settings what area we needed leads from, we were off to the races. We set a budget and moved forward. Now keep in mind Thumbtack unlike its competitors doesn't allow you to decide about leads - if it believes something is a match then it sends you the lead and auto bills your card a whopping $18 bucks for that one lead. In our case, of those first 4 leads, only 1 was in our state and serviceable and the other 3 were out of state and we couldn't service them if we wanted to.
I thought there must be a mistake, I checked our settings, and they were correct. So I requested refunds for the out-of-state items based on the fact we were auto-charged for things that did not meet our criteria. Took them 2-3 days to issue the refunds at which time I hid our account until I was sure they would correct the issue.
After they issue the refunds I said ok, let's try again and unhid the account. 3 more direct leads come in they forced us to pay for - guess what? NOT ONE of these leads was in our state or matched our preferences and the previous lead we got that was in our state never replied to or acknowledged us. This same scenario happens at another organization that is a direct competitor to Thumbtack.
At this point, we knew this platform was shady as well. They are randomly charging people in hopes they get direct charges you won't dispute and we are estimating that the leads are randomly generated in a mix of actual leads. In other words, yes there are some legitimate leads we believe, but we are of the opinion they are mixed with fake leads that no real person is behind, justified by our observation on this platform and others like it. In our view, this business model is borderline criminal. If we had the resources to waste - we'd start our own investigation into these companies. Good luck all.

He wanted half the money up front and the rest due the day it was repaired. I paid him half and on the day of the repair, the rest. As soon as he installed the compressor he said that it was done and should work but left before it started cooling. He said to give it 24 hours to completely cool. It never cooled. He had already been paid. Over 3 months he made 5 visits, told me it should work and left. It never worked. I paid him $1364.00 already and had nothing to show for it.
I contacted Thumbtack because they say they guarantee the work that's done but that's not the case. I have been back and forth only to find that they don't stand behind their pros. Thumbtack support say they can't make him do anything. I had someone else come in from GE and I had a refrigerant leak, not a bad compressor and had it fixed for under $400.00. Now Nicholas ** at Palmetto Home and Appliance won't return my money and Thumbtack says they can't compel him to do anything.
Don't waste your time and money using this service. I am broke and disappointed at this point not to mention the time wasted thinking Thumbtack would guarantee the work done by the pros they recommend. I am a disabled senior citizen and can't afford for things like this to happen and hope by making this review, it will save someone else trouble, money, and heartache. I have been listed as a vendor on Thumbtack for eleven months. Besides being predatory for vendors in that they have you pay to merely receive leads (and it's exceptionally rare for the prospective buyer to book), they do not care about vendor experience. I decided to delete my account today because I had been waiting for a week for their employees to remove a false review left on my account (with proof) from a woman who hired another performer. I reported it a week ago and was told "Well, it's 4 stars, that's not so bad. " It was entirely false!
When I showed them proof from the woman stating she was hiring someone else and that she called me by the wrong name in the review, I was told to contact her myself asking her to delete it. I reached out to her twice and heard nothing. I was also told that their "dedicated review team looked at it and determined they could not remove it." They never informed me of this. I had to wait a week for no answer only to call back today and hear this. It ruined my 5 star rating and was completely false.
Also, to add insult to injury, when I attempted to delete my account, the system puts it in as a "request," and does not do it immediately. Because I wanted it deleted, I removed all of my info from my profile. They then sent me an email telling me I was violating Thumbtack's Terms of Use because my account isn't updated. How ridiculous. On any other entertainment booking site whenever I've had a problem, it was handled immediately. Do not waste your time advertising via this service.

I simply requested a Solar Equipment review for a possible malfunction, which warranty company would work with a legal Arizona Solar Business and I pay labor costs. Easy I would give an estimate to the well known warranty company, they would approve deliver necessary equipment and I would pay the labor costs. Instead Thumbtack referred a criminal who did unauthorized and never requested Electrical work because it was an emergency fire risk that I was in danger since I am Federally Recognized Medical Homebound Disabled person. He said he was Solar but also a licensed Arizona Electrician since he did the work to save my life I owed $390.00. Not what I expected but I thought Thumbtack recommended Pro. I paid not expecting Thumbtack to sell my private information to a criminal.
I have been communicating in writing with Thumbtack since 6.18.2023 proof that the company is not a legal solar company or electrical company, written proof of the Thumbtack Pro utilizing the Thumbtack Platform to perform fraud on me and professional Legal Arizona Electrician who I am willing pay the Legal Electrician not me, $1,500 repairs of unauthorized electrical damages.
Thumbtack Support in writing acknowledge and stated validated my complaint as true no disagreement there. Thumbtack.com Support written statement is Thumbtack.com is a neutral party, Though they haven't provided documentation and I can't find any public information, IK was responsible for determining if a Thumbtack recommended Professional business was really a Professional Business or a criminal.
Thumbtack.com written statement was the criminal would give me the $390.00 refund if I signed legal waivers provided by the criminal releasing him from any financial responsibility of his criminal damages to my property because he, the unqualified illegal electrician, had decided that the qualified legal electrician was in error not him and Thumbtack has no control of illegal activity on Thumbtack.com Platform, I can't find and haven't been provided documentation I was responsible to monitor illegal activity on Thumbtack.com Platform.
Thumbtack.com acknowledged and didn't disagree illegal activity being performed by a Thumbtack Pro on Thumbtack.com Platform. 8/10/2023 Thumbtack.com is still profiting selling the criminal leads for his illegal company, the criminal has my $390.00 and according to his Thumbtack.com website page not only is still fraudulent advertising but did a 20,000.00 illegal solar job for a Thumbtack.com customer who I hope doesn't have any issues because he has no construction license or construction insurance as required by Arizona Public Law for any building modifications over $1,000.00.
Glad the criminals Thumbtack and the illegal business Mesh Bros Enterprises are still profiting where I, the Thumbtack Customer have to still have my solar equipment reviewed, my original request, but I was provided financial responsibility of $1,500.00 to pay for illegal activity by Mesh Bros Enterprises. I did not receive services requested and my home was damaged $2,000.00 by criminal activity because IK used Thumbtack.com as opposed to other referral companies where I wasn't unknowingly put in a situation of a criminal approaching me.
I, Marie **, publicly swear this is my true experience and all documentation has been submitted to Arizona Attorney Generals' Office to review my claim of Thumbtack.com Fraudulent Advertising. Thumbtack.com did not inform me prior to my legal agreement with Thumbtack.com. I was giving Thumbtack.com permission to sell my private information to a known criminal. The illegal solar company did not find publicly. I wanted a free estimate for possible solar equipment failure, Mesh Bros Enterprises were only aware of me because I agreed for Thumbtack to sell that private information to Thumbtack.com's Private Professional Network.

On the porch instead of getting NEW IRON BANNISTERS that I showed them in Lowe's, they found an old rusted Bannister and painted it over with black paint. I have never seen "techs" look at instructions so confused before. They also came unprepared for themselves, practically begging for water anytime we checked on them. Any professional contractor comes prepared for themselves and don't ask anything of the client. I am pretty sure they just hire anyone that can pass a background check.
It's 3 days into the job, and they have left our Gazebo damaged, unsafe, and incomplete. Now they're saying they can't finish the job. They also didn't use any silicone during the job. It's missing part of the roof. Only 2 anchors used on each foot while 3 holes were drilled. Anchors are loose and not secured to the concrete. This is unacceptable, unsafe, dangerous, and not up to code. Customer service has been anything but that, and have done nothing to make things right. We can't get anywhere with them. This Gazebo was gift to us for our first home.
Now, we're stuck with finishing up the job because FixTman clearly has no understanding of what a job done right looks like. Not to mention were stuck with the damage that the techs made. I am an electrical contractor Pro with over 20 years of experience, licensed, insured and offer warranteis to my customers. You would think Thumbtack tries their best to keep contractors like me?
1. I clearly stated in my preferences that I don't install security cameras. After a customer requested security camera installation, I declined and asked thumbtack for a refund.. Thumbtack declined my refund request because the customer stated that it is a "wiring installation" and that it fell within my preferences. I then told thumbtack that the customers are clueless or accidentally click on the wrong box at times. If a customer reaches out to a plumber and states he needs a switch installed, the plumber still gets charged for that lead and Thumbtack declines a refund to the plumber.
2. Thumbtack structure for the contractor is set up like an auction. Contractors are auctioned off! It trains customers to look for the lowest dollar contractor. Most of them request/demand free quotes to 5+ contractors where each one pays for the lead. As a contractor pro, you show up in a long list with your competitors where the customer can click a button on all of them requesting free quote. Imagine each click is $60 and customer clicks on 6 contractors in less than a minute. That's $360 to Thumbtack for a job that doesn't even cost that much to do!
3. Thumbtack is UNDERSTAFFED! One week I called 3 times, and waited 1 hour each. Still nobody picks up. They hire aggressive american sales people that call you every day until you sign up. But when you need general assistance, you have to wait for 6 hours on hold and eventually 4 days later someone from India picks up. Their calls are outsourced while they they charge so much for the leads.
4. As an experienced electrical contractor, I can tell you that their fees are not worth the leads, even if you draw the line at the end of the month. they are no different than Angie's list or Home Advisor. Thumbtack is actually following their model. Real contractors do not stay with Thumbtack. It looks like they don't care if contractors are upset, for as long as they can collect fees from them for a short while, they are happy. I have used Thumbtack to hire a few contractors for various jobs. Sometimes it would take months to hear back and other times contractors were responsive. I recently posted and hired a handyman to hang some shelves, medicine cabinet and hook up a dishwasher. Shortly before the appointment I received a deactivation notice due to my handyman post. When I asked and demanded to know how I violated terms of use the only response I received was “you violated terms of use and your account will not be reconsidered.” So clearly they have no trouble disregarding their customers and do NOT have our best interests at heart.

As a Thumbtack PRO (versus customer) I have found the software application to be quite dated with limited features, functionality, and system enhancements over the term of my use. The helpdesk is ineffective, often not knowing how the software works themselves, or just making up contradictory support so they can close a ticket. The price per lead continues to rise, while number and quality of leads decline. Their policy to reimburse unresponsive leads (did not read PROs response, did not answer phone or text messages) is not honored. I have been a Thumbtack PRO for 5+ years. I am at my wits end. It never ceases to amaze me - the gap between company valuation, founder adoration, and the reality of actual, effective business operations.

Even for $60 leads they'll send them around as much as they can so that they can grab as much money as possible from contractors. Most never respond or "someone already came to remove it" within 1 minute of them posting it. Takes 30 minutes+ to get ahold of them over the phone, and support won't refund you. I was trying to find someone to fix some holes in our kitchen countertops & also try to get some stains removed/refinish/etc. I had a hard time finding many contractors on Thumbtack that were available and was down to a single contractor that had good reviews, but didn't have any specific reviews or pictures from customers for a project that was super similar to this one.
Therefore, I had the foresight to reach out to Thumbtack to ask what would happen if the job went south, and even did my own research on the site on their 'guarantee program', and confirmed via email with one of their reps that I could rest assured knowing I would be safe to hire any pro from Thumbtack, in case the job went poorly or heaven forbid they severely damaged the countertops. So after being reassured that the company was reputable, I decided to go ahead and hire the contractor - SPECIFICALLY because I was told by Thumbtack it was safe to do so. TOO BAD THAT WAS A BOLD-FACED LIE!!
The contractor did in fact destroy the countertops! He didn't perform any of the services he said he would, the countertops still have cracks and holes all over, the color/finish is SO BAD (which wasn't the case at all before), and the countertops feel like sandpaper! Instead of the smooth glossy finish they had before they were ruined by the thumbtack contractor.
So I naturally tried keeping my calm and reaching out to Thumbtack. I spoke with a friendly rep who (yet again!) assured me they could and would help remedy the awful situation. I sent tons of pics/videos of the before/after countertops. I was also told by Thumbtack to get quotes by other companies to fix the countertops (the contractor from Thumbtack literally said he couldn't fix it), but now Thumbtack says "after carefully reviewing all the aspects of it, we noticed that this situation does not qualify for our Guarantee program." Thumbtack IS AN ABSOLUTE SCAM. The "Pros" are nothing of the sort. DO NOT USE, YOU WILL REGRET EVERYTHING!!!

Our company began with Thumbtack just about when they started. Back then they were the best thing since the old saying "Sliced Bread". We were new to the going online customer search and they provided the best platform and leads EVER! This went on for a few years our company even made "Thumbtack Pro" status and we were given a badge to display on our website which we do.
Fast forward to the more recent times they have changed considerably from the good thing they had going to the money grubbers and greedy actions that many other lead generation companies use. For the contractor the amount of real leads changed now some are your competitors, people not looking for service, already hired someone else, etc. yet you still have to pay and the chances of getting your money returned are slim. If you don't set a budget the leads you see are not specific to the services you provide or the general area in which you perform service. Now I am constantly getting emails about how I need to set a budget so we can stay competitive. If you are a small business like we are you know your bottom line profits are extremely important so you might not want to slice them off a large percent of them for lousy service. Think about it.

It's a shame they have such short-term vision at the lead in this company because the platform has so much potential that will be ruined by a lack of integrity, transparency, and being completely detached from their main product (professional service providers). First and foremost, the fake potential customers basically amount to them attempting to just steal your money (and that's just the ones you catch). Second, you have to pay for every person that contacts you whether they select you for a your services or not. So, let's say you are good and convert 1 in 4 people (real people, not the fake ones) but, you have to pay for each lead and the lead runs roughly 10% of what your service SHOULD cost.
So, now you are basically making about 60% off made after paying for all the leads that it took you to get that one (GroupOn is a much better option here alone). Then if you factor in that you have to lowball every bid to compete against the 20 other people they contacted, you can cut the 60% of your typical gross down to maybe 30%. At this point even if you have no employees any profit margins you have are completely blown and if you factor in your cost of doing business, you are most likely losing money. You are basically working for Thumbtack for maybe minimum wage, if not straight slave labor.
Do yourself a favor and just don't. It's not worth it. These people will scam you. They will steal your money. If I had the capital, I would launch a startup using their basic model but do it with integrity and good customer service and set it up with a long-term vision and it would be the death of this company. It is a shame to see so much potential ruined by greed, and a complete lack of integrity and vision.
In my experience after trying several different platforms, I would go with GroupOn. GroupOn has its drawbacks too but overall it's worth it. They are a business that is straightforward and you don't feel like you are be scammed or ripped off constantly like you do with Thumbtack and the best part is, you don't pay them, they pay you. SO, it's in their best interest to get you real customers instead of having fake ones hit your account to generate more revenue (like Thumbtack does). Because with GroupOn, they don't get paid unless you get paid. Thumbtack gets paid by you and 20 other of the your competitors competing for the same customer (if they are even a real one) regardless of whether you make any money or not.

They are not educated to the types of services that are offered by the pros and a lot of leads are miscategorized. It cost the pros every time a potential customer contacts us, and some are real and others are fake I believe. Out of the number of direct leads that come to me 1 in 10 are legit. The others are fake or something else. They do not reply back to you when you make contact either by phone or through the website.
Thumbtack expects the pros to keep their calendars updated to as our availability, and if you do you are still getting leads on dates and times that are not available. I am an independent contractor who has provided services for many small business like sales and marketing to name a few and also own a small business. In the summer I opened and verified my brands page on Thumbtack (JW Marketing Agency) however did not attempt to use until recently because I didn't have enough funding so I was getting jobs through other platforms. On November, 28, 2022 I decided to turn my targeting on and added my Capital One card, and they automatically deducted $195.00 from my card, when I went in to check I couldn't access my account because they deactivated it instantly. So they stole $195.00 then lock me out. Therefore, I didn't benefit from the $195.00 they took because they locked me out and don't even know what lead they got or for what.
This is the first issue!! Then prior to my issue, I pitched Thumbtack to a client for construction leads (Caleb Renovation Corp) and got 2 accounts deactivated instantly. I spoke to the account manager who was supposed to help me with setting up everything and explained how 3 accounts one under my name and social and the other one under my clients gets deactivated.
He made me aware that my phones and computers are linked to a previous account which I guess after I quit that company became delinquent (Wondecor, LLC). My biggest issue is how can their systems link my phones and devices to this company which I resigned from September 2021 and have nothing to do with their issues since I am not an owner of that company I was simply helping them out for a couple of months and their systems can't track that I had no involvement since September 2021. I am not sure when that account became delinquent but definitely know it happened after I quit. Therefore, their investigation should be more thorough.
Second big issue is that how deep does their background check go, because apparently this former employee is on Thumbtack with verified account, which his wife verified and most likely opened from her phone. Wouldn't your spouse come up in a background check? I was a former employee which my W2, resignation letter could prove. I am appalled I am being punished by Thumbtack while the people who committed the act are under another name benefiting from their services. I want my money back and I will go through great lengths to get this fixed because it is unfair to me and the clients I currently service.

I have used Thumbtack for my business since 2016. I found the platform to be very helpful in building my business and now have 145 reviews left from 178 hires. All of my reviews are 5 Stars. Nothing below that. I was also pleased to be the only provider of service in my area when I first started. It wasn’t long before other professionals signed on to Thumbtack. I really wasn’t concerned with this at first, but I then noticed that some of these folks were claiming territory which would require them to drive 2-3 hours (one way) to do a job! It’s certainly understandable that such people will attract more business because they are willing to travel so many miles. My problem here is that Thumbtack does not take local businesses into consideration when ranking their pros. I currently have three profiles listed above mine who live more than 100 miles away from the area. I would think local business would be a priority.
Thumbtack does give professionals the opportunity to state their credentials. One of my competitors (always listed first) had one year of experience and does not give any credentials! Due to his lack of experience, he charges a much cheaper rate and claims territory as far away as 160 miles! It’s quite clear that anyone who is looking for a service will be attracted to a cheap rate. His reviews are pretty good, but less than 50 percent of his hires take the time to leave a review. Thumbtack does give some pros the opportunity to include their license/certification. That option is not available in my field, so I had to go to great lengths to list all my certifications and credentials. My rate is higher than some, but it falls within the average of any pro who appears on the list. I only mention this here because there are customers who will actually dig deep to find out just how qualified a pro is before hiring them.
Here’s the most important part. Thumbtack had a badge it gives to pros who meet certain criteria called “Top Pro”. That badge appears at the top of your profile page. It gives the clear impression that a professional upholds the highest standards. It is also obvious that a customer will see this as a positive when considering who to hire. Thumbtack made changes to their Top Pro criteria earlier this year which has now resulted in the removal of my badge after having that credential for over two years. I had a steady flow of leads before the change was made. I have not had a single lead in three months because of their change with Top Pro.
I have written countless emails and spent hours on the phone with them over their unfair way of ranking professionals. I have more than met the criteria for having a better ranking. The reps I have spoken with over the years have all agreed with me and assured that they would “pass this information along”, but nothing is ever resolved. While I don’t expect any more leads from them, I do plan to keep my account active. Customers in my area who use Google will still see my stellar profile, so that’s a good thing. Please use caution if you are considering using Thumbtack. It’s a good thing if you are willing to offer a low rate for your service. It’s not a good idea for those professionals who maintain a successful business, but are unable to include your license/certification due to a platform that does not recognize your field of work.

Do not use this site. I learned the hard way that any old company or person can sign up to be on Thumbtack. There is no real vetting. After my experience, I'm starting to think this site is a total scam. I had an issue where I posted a review for Company A, but it was actually Company B that came to my house. Because my partner and I both were working to find a contractor, there was some confusion and I left a review for the wrong company. Whoops. Easy to fix? Wrong. I could not delete or edit my own review. Really? That's certainly inconvenient. So I emailed them with the error.
I've dealt with two customer service reps (one supervisor named Jeff) that have told me that due to their "integrity" they cannot remove the review. As I said to them, what kind of integrity is it to leave up a review for a company it doesn't belong to? This is false and untrue and should certainly be removed. My review is up there in error, hurting the wrong party that it is attached to, yet Thumbtack will not intervene and make it right. How awful is that? This is Thumbtack's definition of "integrity," apparently.
After doing more homework, I realize the Pros pay so much money for leads (just your clicking to connect with them charges them), which it translates into higher prices for the customer. The way I see it, this company is out to get everyone's money and doesn't care about anyone involved. Do yourself a favor and do not use this site. It appears to be a burden to everyone involved.

Beware... Thumbtack might be good if you use them and do the jobs they send you leads on, but Beware!!! They charge you for sending you leads even if you don't use them. I tried to not even click on them and they still charged me. Customer service is not good and they are very hard to get ahold of. Every time they zapped my account I felt very ripped off!! I just deactivated my account and will look for a more honest company to get leads from.

First time using Thumbtack. This time for house cleaning. Specified it was for deep cleaning from 2pm to 6pm. Pleasant workers came but said had to leave after about 2 hours. Said had another job. I examined what they had done and they corrected the problems. Should have done more as I found they had not cleaned the hardwood floors and other issues. They didn't know it was for 4 hrs and a deep cleaning and didn't bring the proper equipment and supplies. The owner "Pro" and I exchanged some heated text messages. Showed him the evidence in a photo. Offered to pay $120 vs $240 for a half of a job. He refused. I have tried to find a way to contact Thumbtack customer service. Apparently doesn't exist. I am getting multiple emails now since my account has been deactivated, and I am unable to delete my account or ask for it to be deleted online BECAUSE it is deactivated. As a customer, I hired someone from this site, and they were AWFUL. Thumbtack Professional repaired some broken tiles on the back deck/pool deck of my home. The outdoor tile is discontinued so I had to try to salvage the damaged areas. While the tile appears to be repaired correctly. The grout does not match the existing grout. It was left the raw grey vs terracotta like the rest of the deck. I did not notice it until he left. I contacted the owner to discuss it. I found out the worker charged me $900 but told the owner he charged me $600. He did a terrible job and stole $300 from me on top of the sub-standard Job. The owner said that he would do something about this. So far nothing.
Thumbtack customer service got involved. They ask for documentation to support the claim. I supplied the payment support and texts from the Garry Pavers. After 2 weeks of research they decided that they would not honor the money back guarantee. Just marketing smoke and mirrors. If something goes wrong, don't expect them to do anything to resolve it. I have been a Thumbtack Pro with this organization for several years. I recently had a young lady who booked limousine service with my company for a July wedding. During the month of May she emailed me on the THUMBTACK platform and states she was canceling the wedding and she could not go through with it. I immediately attempted on several different occasions to reach out to her to find out what was going on and never received a phone call back.
The next thing I find is a "1" star review with her stating that my company took her money and did not show up for her wedding. I immediately disputed it with Thumbtack and of course you cannot get someone live on the phone unless you're paying for that service. But I was told that the review stands because it was her personal opinion on her dealings with my company and that she did not violate any of THUMBTACK'S policies. Although they saw the proof in black and white on their very own platform. This young lady bought herself a lawsuit and if you're a business owner thinking of doing business with Thumbtack, they were excellent when I first started with them, but in MY OPINION nothing more than a total scam and rip off at this point. Spend your hard earned marketing dollars elsewhere. I am having tremendous success with Google Ads.

I filed a complaint with the Better Business Bureau regarding this issue and I rejected Thumbtack's response because: It is a non-responsive answer that did not address my concern. The answer actually SUPPORTS my complaint that contractors should NOT be charged for a so-called "lead" where the customer NEVER responds. Thumbtack wrote: "Customers who have projects or jobs that match your targeting preferences that you entered into your account can reach out to you to learn more about working with your business. When this happens, you are charged a lead fee. You're paying for the value of being connected with a potential customer — whether or not you're hired."
My complaint to the BBB had nothing to do with not being hired. I accept the fact that some customers who contact me will eventually choose another contractor. My complaint is about those customers who NEVER contact me in the first place, despite a standard four attempts on my part to connect with them. In that case Thumbtack is STILL charging contractors a fee and REFUSES to refund that fee.
NOTE that Thumbtack said customers can reach out to contractors, and when this happens, you are charged for that lead. What was left unsaid is what happens when a customer does NOT reach out to a contractor. We should NOT be charged for that so-called "lead" then. Because that "connection" with the customer NEVER HAPPENS because the customer NEVER responded, then the contractor should not be charged a fee. THAT is the issue that Thumbtack refuses to address, and is a major reason why it and other similar services have such a high contractor turnover. If Thumbtack ignores this complaint and refuses to issue refunds where a customer NEVER responds to multiple attempts at contact, then I too will be quitting its service.

Been on Thumbtack for 3 years and it has definitely gotten worse. The leads are always under the wrong category. Even if you respond within 1 minute the potential customer already has another contractor on the way. They are criminals. I tested it and contacted my own business for a maintenance (20-30$) and they charged me for a new install lead (70-80$). If you own a small business do NOT let this company steal your money. They do NOT give credits back for bad leads like they used to.

Thumbtack's policy states that leads not consistent with pro's preferences, problematic leads will be refunded to the pros. However, we are charged for leads that Customer admitted in writing that he made a mistake contacting us, as he didn't see that we charge an on site estimate fee of $50 which is labeled next to our company logo. I can provide images if uploading pictures is allowed. Thumbtack supervisor replied to us that the customer decided not to proceed with us because he changed his mind, which is a blatant distortion of the fact, given the customer admitted in writing that he didn't see the on site estimate.
Further, Thumbtack doesn't refund any leads if the customers never reply to pros, claiming they charge these non -responsive leads because they did advertisement for us. Google Ads charges $0.02 per click on business website. In comparison, Thumbtack charges around $60 for each lead, which is 3000 times of Google Ads advertising fee, astonishingly overpriced. Therefore, I do not recommend Thumbtack.

We own a business and have been using Thumbtack to get leads. We are charged over $100 weekly for "legitimate leads" but we often get suspicious leads that don't even read our response to their inquiry. After using them for 2 years it's pretty clear they create fake leads to charge you hundreds of dollars a month with no chance in assisting the client. We have an A+ rating and a Gold status profile, meaning we have filled all the content out, are professional, contact every "lead" and have a perfect review score from our personal clients. When we ask for a refund for fake clients they prevent it by redirecting the request to a completely different dashboard. They should be inspected by the BBB and closed down. They're predators of local legitimate businesses.
Hi, we're sorry to hear you haven't been satisfied with some of the leads you receive on Thumbtack. We work hard to ensure that the leads on the platform are legitimate. When users report concerning leads, we are quick to take appropriate action. When a lead doesn't respond, that doesn't necessarily mean the lead is not legitimate. We encourage pros to follow up with customers after their initial message, in case the job details have changed or the customer has found someone else.

I have been a Thumbtack Pro photographer for over a year. I reported over $35K gross income just from Thumbtack on my last tax return. BUT, I pay around 50% of my Thumbtack income back to Thumbtack for weekly leads. So my net Thumbtack income was closer to $17K. Why? Well, about three quarters of my leads turn out to be duds. They were looky-loos with no intention of booking, they were new competitors trying to sus out the market, they were fake leads (yes, I've often suspected this), or they booked a competitor and just ghosted me instead of telling me they went with someone else after wasting my time communicating with them about their project.
Thumbtack pretends that they guarantee the quality of their leads. They assure you that every lead comes with a phone number but even when I've determined that the phone number is a fake and brought that to their attention, they don't automatically refund me. Also I often pay for duplicate leads. I contest the lead, Thumbtack makes a pretense of checking it out, then because there's a comma on one lead but not on the other (no kidding) they kick it back and tell me it doesn't qualify for a refund under their policy (they always have a link to their legalese blablabla page with the word "policy.")
If I were only paying for legit leads, I estimate my COA (cost of acquisition) would go from 50% down to under 20%, still high but doable. In other words, after studying my data for a year, I know that I pay at least 30% for fraudulent, illegitimate, or duplicate leads. That's money I'm just throwing down the drain. Because of this, and because Thumbtack never responds to this complaint, I have downgraded Thumbtack in my advertising budget and am focusing on other lead sources. If I get busy enough that I book up without Thumbtack, they will be the first thing I ditch in future budgets.
If their customer service were excellent and if they demonstrated any sort of respect and consideration for the pros they make their money off of, maybe I wouldn't feel so ripped-off by them. But today for instance, I have a simple support request on something I need help figuring out but in the past four hours, I have not been able to connect with anyone in their support team. Four hours and I'm a platinum level pro. I'm supposed to get phone support and prioritized chat support. But nah. They don't care. If you're just starting out, maybe. If you're an established pro, put more money into social media ads or something. Thumbtack's not worth it, imo.

I have been with Thumbtack since 2019. I have used the service for years, the way the application works is you can set a budget for specific targeted leads in different areas of construction work. And you can also limit the distance or areas where you will receive leads from. When I first started using the service I noticed that I would get sent leads when I already had work and I was being charged for jobs that I could not take. I realized that when I found work and didn’t need any more leads from thumbtack and I would have to pause my business.
Thumbtack only allows you to pause your business in certain increments so once that increment of time is up if you don’t change it it will automatically send you leads when it turns on even if you don’t need the leads or intend to. Thumbtack needs to change or add a setting to pause your business until you want to turn it back on. Thumbtack called me and told me that leaving my business hidden has a negative affect on my business as far as leads and Search engine optimization. He suggested I leave it on and use the calendaring feature. He told me that if I block days on my calendar that it would stop leads from being sent to me by people requesting work done on those days. I learned the calendar feature is flawed.
Thumbtack has its customers (leads) fill out a form on their app. The form asks several questions about scheduling and then on one specific page where your picking your availability there is a small box at the bottom of the page that says “open to receive suggestions for other dates from the pro”. Thumbtack preselects this option for the customer, who 99% of the time doesn’t realize the option was selected because THEY DIDN'T select it. I’ve learned this by asking my leads after they tell me they’re not able to wait. This is misleading. Thumbtack does not even provide the customer(lead) with your next available date…
I have disputed several charges from thumbtack that have had this problem and they automatically deny the refund requests. They claim that if a person reads my message and doesn’t respond and I can see that they have my blocked dates selected, that that was a valid lead according to my preferences.. even though it’s obviously not. I have spent several hours with customer service on the phone trying to get a hold of management. I was eventually greeted with an email from thumbtack saying that if I continued to make customer service requests for refunds that “aren’t eligible” my customer support options would be taken away completely.
I continued to try to figure a way around this problem and I was approached with pausing my targeting preferences instead from a customer support rep. I paused my specific preferences each and when I turned them back on all my location settings were reset unbeknownst to me. Thumbtack says this does not happen and that I must have changed them. The settings for all my categories were changed. In order to do this you have to go into each individual category and make changes to many different sections manually.. I made thumbtack aware that I never did that. I am a veteran of this application and have been a top pro, and have been using it for years. This is not an easy mistake to make.
I contacted contact support and they promised me a manager would call me back in 48 hours. I received a call back from the manager three days later. He promised me he would call back on Monday. It has been three weeks since that phone call and I have not received one response to any email from the nasty manager that I got. I decided to go and dispute the charges through my credit card company. When I did that I received a threat from thumbtack saying that if I disputed any more charges that my account would be removed from thumbtack including my 41 five star reviews. I request I receive a recall from management who actually can speak for this company.

It doesn't let you search pros by name.
The way you can initiate contact with the pros is very scripted and limiting. Your best option is to follow whatever stupid questions they ask you, get a phone number from the pro, and cut thumbtack out altogether. Beware, they do not let you delete reviews. He did not show but assured me the delivery was on schedule. He came to my home on 05/11 to let me know what the delay was and scheduled another meeting which he missed. After more missed meetings and then no response at all, I contacted Thumbtack and opened a case with the Trust and Safety team. After I provided all requested documentation, they were investigating but had no success with contacting the provider either.
I was scheduled to meet with the Team member who was investigating my complaint on Sunday, June 5th from 12:00 pm - 1:00 pm EST. The meeting did not have a link or a phone number for contact. The Team member emailed me at 11:00 to remind me of the 12:00 meeting. I responded at 11:47 asking how I was to join with no response and again at 12:05 pm with the same question and providing my phone number as well. They are closed on Sunday. I trusted that the providers were vetted before being presented to the public, not with this one. I trusted that Thumbtack would try to assist me with resolving this issue. Thumbtack literally only cares for themselves and could care less for their pros at all. They have CONSTANTLY charged my business for leads on days that I have "BLOCKED" on my thumbtack calendar. What is the point of having a feature to "block" days off your calendar on thumbtack if you still get sent leads for that day. What thumbtack does, which is HIGHLY illegal and against their terms of service, is they say that "Thumbtack Pros will not be charged for leads on days that are blocked on their calendar." Thumbtack however, uses a loophole here that allows customers to select "Open to other dates the pro chooses" EVEN THOUGH the customer selected a specific date for their appointment and they are NOT open to other dates. But guess what, you as the PRO still get charged EVEN though you had it blocked on your calendar. Thumbtack, this is highly illegal and I will be filing suit with my lawyer for damages and charges from these illegally sent leads.
Hi John, thank you for sharing this feedback. We do give customers the option to select that they're open to other dates, as often times customers still want to hire a specific pro but they're not available on that date, and they can work together to find a different time. To request refunds for any leads that don't match your preferences and settings, please follow these steps: https://help.thumbtack.com/article/how-to-request-a-refund.

To make a long and terrible story short, I was contacted by supposed pro painter through Thumbtack. And on her first day at my house, she took my deposit money without my permission (was supposed to get it at the end of the first day if I was satisfied with the work being done), went into my closet, stole the signed contract we had, and disappeared completely. Police and an attorney haven’t been able to track her down. She did NO work. None. I used Thumbtack versus Google, because it seemed more trustworthy to me. They had allegedly verified these people, run a background check, and so I felt that I should be able to generally trust the people on there. That’s not to say that some people may not do as high-quality work as others, but that I could add a minimum trust them. I have contacted Thumbtack trust and safety numerous times for help. I have received absolutely no response.
Afterwards, this woman was working to cover her tracks, and deleted the Thumbtack profile she had contacted me under. Thankfully I had screenshots of all of our messages. And then she turned around and created a new Thumbtack profile with other fake reviews! Again, I contacted the company to alert them to the fact that she was setting up shop again to find another victim, and no response! Horrible company. Making what is it… $2B dollars and they can’t research their pros??!!
The research I did was able to verify some basic information that this person had provided me. They showed me a copy of their insurance, which has to be fake as well. This is not a situation where I am just a complete fool and didn’t ask any questions or do no research. This woman is sharp, actually knew what she was doing from beginning to the end. That’s why she had to wait until I had to step out into the yard to sneak out. I would never recommend Thumbtack to anyone. Clearly they offer zero benefit and don’t take responsibility under their own Pro guarantee, where it says they will charge the pro to refund a customer or leverage their insurance to reimburse a customer. Nope!

I spent 2 years creating a top pro account with 389 reviews at 4.9 star rating. I responded to customers within moments and earned all the Top Pro badges. I even got emails about being a "neighborhood favorite". Without warning, I was banned from the platform because an ex-employee created an account then was kicked off. They then banned my account because they said we had a "strong association". I sent all the documents I possibly could to prove that I had terminated the employee last year but they told me they would never reconsider their decision. They left my customers in the lurch and even kept my unspent budget money. I can also say that over the course of my time with them, the lead prices kept rising and they would rarely ever refund you no matter the situation. Do not set up to be a pro on Thumbtack, you might do everything right and they still will steal from you and abandon you.

At one time Thumbtack was a good service to use. As a DJ/karaoke host I booked many parties through Thumbtack however, in recent years Thumbtack has changed its prices & policies charging much more for leads averaging $45 and up for a lead, many of which are bogus with no phone numbers to follow up. Plus there is no guarantee that you land the job but yet Thumbtack still charges you the fee if the customer responds in any fashion. This means that if 5 DJs provide a quote and the customer responds to all 5, Thumbtack will charge all 5 DJs a large fee. This is not fair. I don't mind paying a booking fee if I land the job. Now they took me out of the search function unless I set up a budget to spend with them so that they can take money from me any time they want. I've stopped using their service. There's too many other booking services online that provide me with booking leads for much less money. Scam! Stay away!

I booked a bi-weekly housekeeping service on Thumbtack, after reviewing the candidates that Thumbtack provided. The cost was $109, which Thumbtack took out immediately. We received an email and a text, confirming the housekeeper for Friday, April 22, 2022 at 10:00 a.m. I stayed home from work to meet the housekeeper, since it was her first time. The housekeeper didn't call, didn't show, didn't text - no communication at all. I contacted Thumbtack immediately and was told that they were simply a 'leads-selling' business, and that they were keeping the money to apply to my Thumbtack account, because although the lead was no good, they did in fact, provide the lead. This is not the service that Thumbtack advertises. I paid for a service, the service was not performed, and even worse, there was no notification that the service was not going to be performed
The housekeeper did get back with me three days later, apologizing, but confirmed that Thumbtack kept the money, not her. I have used other services such as Angie's list and had great experiences. I will never use Thumbtack again, which means that I will not be able to recoup the $109. I have been a loyal customer of Thumbtack’s since 2016. I used them to get leads for my photo booth and photographer business. They have changed their business model several times over the years always increasing the charge for leads. Still, I stayed. Last week, my account was deactivated for “violation of terms of service”. What? I’m a top Pro and have the badge on my profile several times over. I spent lots of money with them. I am popular and have rave reviews. Deactivated. I ask them exactly what I could have possibly violated. They answer “if we told you that, it would warrant getting around the violation.” Huh? Don’t you want your customers to be in compliance? Don’t you want your loyal ones to continue offering a solid service to the people who come looking for a pro? No answer. I’m just dropped like that. No real explanation, no care for the impact on me and my business, no chance to correct whatever it was I did wrong.
The TOS are vague and easily used for any reason to drop a Pro. I read every word and still have no clue what I did to render such a harsh action. Don’t use them if you’re looking for security in steady leads. They will compliment you with a badge and some laughable “reward” program but then drop you for whatever reason they like. I had over 60 5 star reviews built up over the years and now they’re just gone. My hard work, gone. It is bad bad business. Do not trust Thumbtack to be loyal to you.

Back in the day there was Angie's list. This is NOT that. Apparently anyone can create an account and offer services. When hiring any type of trades work or construction work just be aware that again, anyone can create an account. 3 out of 3 people I used had business names listed on Thumbtack but all three used their wife's name for payment. One was fairly upset and looked as if he didn't know what a check was. I had to some him my bank account information on my phone. If they are a real company, then why did all three different contractors ask that the check be written in their wife's name?
The work was sub-par at best. Once it was downright horrible. Expect to pay 150-300 an hour for a bad experience. You are honestly better off looking at Youtube and attempting it yourself. My latest experience saw the person request payment prior to the job being double-checked and I made the mistake of trusting them. Luckily I was able to put a stop payment on the check and request correction of the bad work but they showed no interest in returning after essentially making a big mess. I got the feeling they were trying to just take the money and run but weren't able to do so. Rather than come back, finish the job and get their money they figured their time was better spent finding the next person to scam.
I would suggest asking to see a business license or saying you'll pay after the work is inspected or you'll only pay in check with a company name on it. Those few things will weed out more people than you think. You're left wondering why you ever even tried the app in the first place. It looks fancy, but it's essentially a craigslist app. It is most def not an Angie's list. Be warned. If you have a bunch of small jobs, it would behoove you just to call a general contractor. Let him deal with the bad workers. It's just like they say, "you get what you pay for"... except with Thumbtack... then you pay more per hour than a lawyer and the work looks like something you or a friend could have done while watching a Youtube tutorial.

Hi everyone, I'm a handyman working in Houston, I had been using Thumbtack for about 2 years, and I must say the app works well and was a good source of getting new clients. But I have too many complaints about the services, the process, the clients, in general the whole dynamic of thumbtack is made to get your money and never see it again.
1) In theory, you should be available 24 hours a day to respond to potential clients when the client requests something, and if you don't respond "quickly" your chance of winning is less, and if the client contacts more professionals different from you even more. So if you weren't available to respond to the customer and others were...you're going to lose your money.
They do not think that you are like a business that has hours of service, and in some hours you are not available to respond, Example, if a client makes an order on a Saturday night and you are at dinner or even sleeping, just because the client asks you and more pros are going to charge you for the lead, and by the time you see that you have a lead, you will see and most of the time the client has already made his decision of whom to hire. And when you go to request a refund, they tell you that the lead matches your preferences and the lead is not eligible for a refund, but why? If your business hours should be taken into account so that the leads arrive in that hours in which the pro can answer them and not at unusual times, such as early morning or weekend nights, or very early in the morning.
2) The client can contact many pros, this also plays against the pros, why do they let a client contact many pros for small jobs? Why do they let a client contact many pros? And many times the client does not even wait for all the quotes to arrive and makes the decision the first time. It must also be said, pros can be added to the bids even if the client has not chosen it.
3) Before if you sent a quote, and the client did not read it, things that still happen, thumbtack returned the value of the lead, which was very fair, but that no longer exists, now they still charge you the lead, and the client never responded to you, neither on the thumbtack platform nor to his cellphone number, and if you ask for a refund they don't give it to you, as always.
4) The last personal case, a client contacts 5 pros to request to assemble 8 chairs for a dining room, simple chairs, a maximum work of 2 hours. The client makes the request very early in the morning, when my business is not available, they charge us 40 dollars for that lead, there is an additional 6 pro that adds to the bid, which they also allow, when I see that I have a lead, it's already late obviously. I do not accept the lead, because I feel it is too expensive for me, I see too much competition, and other pros had already responded. I ask for a refund and it is denied. An extremely expensive lead, for a simple service that takes no more than 2 hours.
5) The customer service is impersonal, the refund service is terrible, and it is very difficult to talk to someone.
Does anyone know where these companies and their bad business practices can be sued. I am also going to upload a photo of the chairs that the client wanted to assemble so that they can give their opinion and if they think that those 8 chairs are worth 40 dollars of lead.
We're grateful for the specific feedback and examples you shared. It sounds like Thumbtack has worked for your business in some ways, but there are a lot of concerns. We do want to note that customers are given the opportunity to contact more than one pro as it's important they find the best fit for their project, just as pros are allowed to turn down leads. We're limited in character count but want to address each concern you mentioned, please send us a DM via social media so that we can help.

I'm an architect, and have used TT and others for leads. All of them make it very hard to turn off the system "pushing" leads to me, that are useless/ambiguous, and charging me. These systems typically have a way to turn off leads, and they bury it about 5 menus down so you will forget how to not even be bothered, when you're busy. TT has followed HomeAdvisor/Angie Leads example and no longer sends you a reminder that you are about to be visible to possible clients. "Visible" = they can send you leads that you would never want, and charge you for them. When you are busy, do you have time to remember to go to wherever online, unhide/rehide (can't just select "continue hiding", of course) and hope that they don't send you a lead when you are in the midst of the process (and charge you, of course). And, this "no warning" practice happened...without warning, of course.
Even when I am set at the lowest $/week setting, they try to take it all. $50 a week? Monday morning, useless lead for $41.50. Monday afternoon, just as useless, $8.50. Then a message from TT saying "put more money in, and we will send more leads". No, thanks. Then, they send along "you are still ...'s first choice" or " ... hasn't heard back from anyone, answer in the next 30 minutes to get the job". Makes me think the number of others using this service has dropped off, and TT is milking the remaining users as much as they can.
The "direct leads", where TT's crummy algorithm sees that I have some money committed to them this week, and decides that maybe what the possible client is describing might be interesting to me, and sends me the lead and takes my money, is useless and expensive. But the approach that shows me and a few others what someone has asked for, and then requires a split-second reply, also doesn't work for those of us who have work to do. I will say -- I did get two very interesting projects through TT in about 5 years. Not worth the bother and hassle and expense, in the long run.

My opinion on the matter after using Thumbtack for a number of years: Thumbtack and big tech's approach to freelancers in the private sector revolves around this idea: Acquire tons of capital. Pump said capital into SEO and Adwords to capture top-tier display rankings on google search. Use those rankings to eclipse everyone and effectively construct a bridge between the consumer and the freelancer; as it prominently displays itself ahead of him/her when said consumer goes to contract for services. Compete with all the other tech firms in your sphere by forcing your inventory of freelancers to perform their services as cheaply as humanly possible. Charge said freelancers that operate within your model increasingly exorbitant fees as they become reliant on your model for business.
Thumbtack started out well and good enough, with leads being more than reasonably priced and a model that allowed you to pick and choose what you wanted to bid on. Somewhere along the way (likely within one of the nine+ rounds of funding they received), however, they grew out of control, and morphed into the Frankensteinian business entity they are now. They went from charging me $8.33/lead in 2014 to charging me $81/lead in 2022. Let me repeat that. Eighty. One. Dollars. For the privilege of....talking to someone. That MAY hire you. Can you imagine creating an Adwords account and paying $81/click? Because that's essentially what's going on.
Literally out of their minds and I don't expect them to be around without another eight or so rounds of late-stage funding. Prior to covid they'd routinely be in 'top ten places in the valley to work' because of all the perks they offered in the workplace - massages, free lunches, etc. And that's all well and good, but maybe focus on making your company profitable before you try to be like google and having this 'super fun work environment.' Anyway. Avoid like the plague.

Thumbtack refuses to vet their customers by finding out if they are of age to request services. I have attempted to speak with Management on how they are gaining information concerning their customers and ensuring they are not minors. Thumbtack takes in the request from the customer and in turn gives the lead to Professionals in their field. They immediately take money from the Professional and never attempt to vet whether or not the person submitting the request is of age.
Thumbtack is also misleading the customers to choose from the Professionals not only in their zip code that they have placed in but also around the country. After, speaking with the customer, they are frustrated because they were looking for someone to assist them locally but reaches someone in another state that could assist them remotely but was not what they were looking for therefore leaving the Professional paying the lead. Essentially. misleading all the customers in choosing multiple Professionals to gain more money from each Professional.
Thumbtack seems to not care about taking care of their customers but appears that it is all about getting as much money as possible. A word of caution if you are looking to work as a Professional for Thumbtack. They will take your money quickly and not allow you any refunds if you do not have any proof that the customer was a minor or looking for a local customer. They are not changing anything about how they are going to Vet each potential customer.

Often clients contact you and 4 other people with vague details only to not respond to your message. Regardless if they respond or not, Thumbtack charges you (often $20-$40). They usually will not offer a refund and you end up with nothing to show for it. The second you owe money to them your profile is hidden. Make the service benefit small businesses. On 11/17 I received an email to fill out a link on total cost I would like reimbursed for the damage/repair and the quotes to support the amount within 60 days, 1/17/2021. During the Holidays, COVID hit my household and affected us for a 6 week time frame which caused a delay in having a contractor visit on site. I had delays finding a contractor as many are booked out for on site quotes for 8 weeks or more due to limitations of staff right due to Omicron spike during that time. I was able to get one contractor to visit on site and provide quote for the cement to be demolished to repair water line and rebuild cost would be $40,593.75.
I submitted the estimate and explained the delay on 1/27 which was 10 days passed the 1/17 deadline. I was immediately denied for the Thumbtack Guarantee because I was past 60 days but offered a "possibility" of $1,000 money back guarantee. I asked for management to reach out to me as I feel there should be exceptions and extensions due to COVID. I am not asking for $40K reimbursement but at least want to be fair and $1K is not fair. Per the fine print for Guarantee, I provided everything requested. Estimated quotes are not in the fine print and I feel is another way to delay reimbursement.

I DO NOT RECOMMEND Thumbtack. Thumbtack charges over $20 for EVERY SINGLE lead they send you, the vast majority of which are just window shoppers. You will pay hundreds and hundreds of dollars before you are ever hired for a job. I can't help but feel that Thumbtack is running a racket. After just a few days and over $500 in fees for leads, I have decided to leave. I would consider joining again if and only if Thumbtack changes their practices to only charging for the leads that turn into actual jobs.
Thank you for your review and feedback, Denise. Lead prices vary depending on the job type and location. We're sorry to see you go, but want to wish your business well as you move forward. We will also be passing along this feedback to our team.

As a photographer, Thumbtack gave me my start with cheap clients that helped me build my portfolio. The leads cost was manageable, but now for a 4hr birthday party the lead cost $47? $600-50 = $550. You can't even cancel these leads and get your money back.
Thank you for taking the time to leave a review and share this pricing feedback. We'll be sure to pass along this feedback to the right team.

I been using Thumbtack for many years. It’s always been unfair business by them but lately, it’s been beyond terrible to use their services. Why? From scam like request to stealing money from small business owners like we are big corporations who needs sources where to throw tax money away! To be clear. They offer “customer stop responding” refund as so many we get that NEVER read message our quote the once showing read but never followed up. That Thumbtack always refuse to refund. I mean I have hundreds of dollars wasted on leads that basically was almost a scam.
Today I got a lead, as so many of them, on a day that is blocked on their service as I am no available. YES, THEY REFUSED TO refund my request “Calendar” issue. Professionals on Thumbtack are small business owners barely putting end to an end. Thumbtack give options to get refund like “customer stop responding” “calendar issue” as it's a day I can’t do it. EVEN didn’t get hired REFUND OPTION. BUT constantly remain disrespectful to the same professionals they are banking on! Rude! Terrible! And you should be ashamed.

I'm only going to give two examples: 1: I got charged for a wedding lead 1 year ago (about $45) and I didn't book. Same lead hit me again around their wedding date, not knowing I will be charged twice if they send a new inquiry. Thumbtack support didn't refund my double charge for the same lead at about 6 months distance. 2. Today, I sent quote of $800, for a photography job, a Sweet 16 party, I got charged $61! If you are willing to pay this kind of money just to get in touch with a potential customer that might be price shopping, go for it!

Thumbtack started off as a decent lead-magnet service, but has recently become increasingly abusive of the professional clientele they presume to serve. When I first began using them, they allowed me to display my profile and charged me for every lead I decided to contact. This was acceptable, as it allowed me to manage my investment risk based on my evaluation of the potential to convert specific leads into qualified client prospects. In 2020 they switched to a pre-paid model, which means the professionals had to pay for leads that Thumbtack decided would be best for them. They modified this slightly by not requiring pre-pay, but kept the stipulation that THUMBTACK makes the decision which leads are best for each professional, and charges them based on Thumbtack's risk assessment, not the professional's.
Thumbtack provided one solitary guarantee to prevent abuse: They guaranteed that if the lead didn't view the prepaid response within 48 hours, that they would refund the cost of the lead to the professional. While this is not an ironclad preventive of corruption (a poorly chosen "match" is still poorly chosen, whether the client views the response or not), at least it was SOMETHING, a tiny but only occasionally effective guard against decision malfeasance on the part of Thumbtack. Late last year, THEY ELIMINATED THAT GUARANTEE. Now they claim that making the client's phone number visible after they've already charged the professional is tantamount to a "guarantee", which is patently obvious nonsense and an admission of failure.
When confronted with this hypocrisy (which I've attempted on multiple occasions), Thumbtack changes the subject and claims that they're only guaranteeing the lead, that they can't guarantee a professional will get hired. Well of course not, nobody expects that and that isn't what we are reacting against. WE PROFESSIONALS ARE THE ONLY ONES WHO SHOULD DECIDE WHICH LEADS TO PAY FOR. By taking away our ability to manage our own risk, Thumbtack has assumed that risk for themselves. And this is untenable even without an irrelevant and nonsensical "guarantee"; even moreso now that they've retreated on that one tiny, solitary protection.
Thumbtack was a decent service five years ago, and I recommended them to all of my friends. Now it's simply another corporate con job more interested in ripping off their professionals than providing them with a competent service. My recommendation -- unless they restructure their current system -- is to stay away. I'll probably be leaving soon myself.
Thank you for taking the time to share your honest feedback, Bruce. We'll be sure to pass along this feedback to the right teams, as we're always working on improving the pro experience. My company has had an account with Thumbtack for over 8 years. In that time we had several leads generate that we were able to pick and choose from. Admittedly the demographic was not always on point, and we had made many phone calls and emails to try to narrow down such things as service areas and services we provided. Thumbtack was fairly new at that point so we gave space for error and learning curves. Unfortunately the demographic lead generation never really improved and we stopped using the service in 2016. We already had a large credit on file that they refused to refund so we were stuck with having to pick thru whatever leads they may send, hoping that maybe one wouldn't be outside of our service area. Sadly, since 2016 we have literally had not one contact/lead from Thumbtack.
Fast forward to today when we opened our company credit card invoice to find that there were several charges from Thumbtack - odd of course since we have not even logged into our account since 2016 - and at that time had a credit balance. Apparently over the course of the past few years we have been charged $3-5 per lead that they emailed to us - not one of which had any contact info, nor had we ever contacted any of the leads via the website/app. Of course this prompted some further investigation and a chat message with the customer service rep. Where I was told basically that I was SOL because some of these leads were over 30 days old and I couldn't dispute them anymore.
I was told I had enabled lead generation, which again, is untrue as we haven't used the account since 2016. The CS rep said that it's impossible that I didn't enable this feature as they have multiple areas of review thru customer service that would allow that change. So naturally I asked them to please show me some proof that I enabled this feature -- radio silence. I asked several more times for proof that I enabled this feature - again, radio silence.
You may remember at the beginning of this review I mentioned that we had attempted to get our money back in 2016 because the lead generation was not hitting our demographic, so please tell me why we would have enabled a feature that allowed Thumbtack to decide for us whether or not a lead was valid, and in turn additionally have to pay for them to send us leads that would not be useful to our business. Doesn't make sense right? Well, I didn't think so either, and my CS rep agreed- but alas there was nothing she could do. We are out hundreds of dollars thanks to the unethical practices of this company - do not make the same mistake!

But anyway, I'm disappointed for the lack of support and professionalism, actually support is non-existent, I tried email and nothing, tried the chat and the agent could not help, didn't respond anymore and closed the chat, I tried the phone and to my surprise you can't talk to a human, you can only text, and guess what...yes, they don't responds the texts. I was so excited when my friend told me about this company till I figured out what was really going on. This is a scam, and I’ll tell you exactly how it plays out. At first it start with “discount leads” for 30 days, that’s their con. You start with building your profile where you outline the area you’ll cover, amount of money you’ll spend, and how much you’ll charge. Wow!!! I was on fire. Everyday I was getting 6 or 7 leads a day, ( see uploaded photos of my alerts) SUPER near my area and great people. I got notifications that said “wants your availability” and ones that said “ they only picked you.” I was getting fabulous reviews and felt so good helping people.
I couldn’t believe how great this was till just the other day, when I hit my 30 day mark. A guy, who claimed to be my guide from the company, called me. He had been calling me occasionally to check in how everything was going, he said. I Just hit 30 days the last week but before I put it all together I noticed my notification almost STOPPED (see uploaded photo). I went from 6 to 7 a day to 5 in a week, NOWHERE near me or any area I listed in my profile. I started looking in the “opportunity” section and saw LOTS of jobs in my area (see uploaded photo) yet I hadn’t received one notification.
While this is coming to light this guy from the company is trying to get me to sign up for their “lead package” for 300 a month and they give 100. While we talked about it I started figuring things out. I started questioning things and asked him. When I brought up not getting any beads near me anymore, he told me I was competing with 12 other notaries in my area. Ok people, didn’t those same 12 notaries exist on the last 30 days when I was getting tons of leads??! I now knew why that guy kept calling me, he wanted my money before the 30 days was up, discount over, and all the leads I was getting would halt.
Here is the bottom line. They SCAM you. I researched everything and this is how it works. I first went back to opportunities and noticed these two new notaries, only one signing completed, getting signings and exposer in my area and yet they we at the top when you opened the app??? Huh? (See uploaded photo) He then told me I didn’t know how Thumbtack worked and people can pick who they was an ask for “availability” and I probably was being chosen just at this given time, BUT if sign up for the 300 package he'll set me up with a “onboarding” team to show me how to set up my profile to succeed like the other people who are first seen when clients opened the app.
Then I realized EXACTLY what was up. When you sign up for your first 30 days, they post you upfront, that’s why you start getting blasted with leads immediately. I then opened the app, scrolled through, now I was nowhere to be found, 30 day trial over. Second, them sending me leads that had nothing to do with me that were WAY outside my profile area was just a tease for me to believe I was still getting chosen. I think they also have control of not just moving around notaries on their site, but also enabling and disabling notary areas outside your profile. One of the 5 leads I got a notification for was 300 miles away, how did that end up with me?? That was 250 outside my profile area. (See uploaded photo)
So the key here is, they need to nail you down to the 300 package before you figure it out. They make money no matter what but it’s after the trial 30s days they profit. It begins the cycle of the notary throwing money out that has no return, and you are forgotten about. They want your money before the 30 days and you realize your days of great lead alerts stops. Next, as I have seen in other complaints, they charge you for things they shouldn’t. They tease you in the “opportunities” area by saying, “they chose another notary but reach out cause sometimes it doesn’t work out" yeah for the notary.
Every time you reach out, especially in the platform when the job is taken, you get CHARGED as if you were responding to a job you have a chance of getting. They are making money In every aspect, on both sides and the notary ends up with nothing but throwing their money away. The only time you had a chance to work was in the beginning, that 30 days, and it’s over. If I would have invested that 300 I would never have seen a return on my money or worked. Today I called and emailed the guy who was trying to get me on board with the package, no response. Funny how he was at my finger tips before I challenged him. Be aware everyone.
Thanks for taking the time to share your concerns with us. We're sorry to hear that you feel this way, we'd like to help provide and address each concern. We don't enable or disable notifications for users without their permission, edit profiles, or manually affect ranking in search results. Third - If you discontinue your subscription, or haven't set up your (forced) new profile page, they still charge you. Fourth - if you try to unsubscribe, they still charge you. Fifth - if you try to change your payment method, you can't. Sixth - If you try to email them, they can't find your account. Seventh - if you try to call them, you can't. You are forced to text them. No Virtual agent, no live chat, no phone call. Eight - If you do try to text them they are unavailable. I've called my bank to report this fraud. Hopefully they can resolve this issue. I have been using Thumbtack as a pro for a while and it really sucks. Lately they have increased the price per lead a lot and most of the time, there is no closing deal. Most leads looking for Thumbtack are tire-kickers, and Thumbtack unfairly charges all the professionals when the customer selects more than one pro looking for the "cheapest price". It is an unfair system, only the chosen professional should pay for the lead and they charge all the pros selected. I'm moving to a new platform called Bark and highly recommend it to professionals who are paying a lot and struggling with Thumbtack. On Bark, the professional buys credits and uses them whenever they want, according to their job preferences. This operation mode allows the pro to invest their credits on the platform consciously and whenever they want.

I've used Thumbtack as a pro in the past and slowly stopped using it for several reasons. My account is still operational and I get emails on leads all the time (mostly out of curiosity). At first when I began using the platform the fee depended on whether the client responded to your bid or not. This was great because if someone responded you knew they existed and if they didn't respond oh well... you weren't charged any fee. As time progressed I started to see faults in the client's questionnaires for the type of profession I'm in. It seemed as I would always have to ask the potential clients the basic three questions to give a rough estimate but by that time I had to pay the service fee.
I reached out to Thumbtack's customer service (when you were still able to talk to someone) and pointed this very important detail out. As expected they brushed me off. Even though this detail would have been beneficial for the clients and professionals it didn't stop the potential of new work. At one point I was taking 1/4 of my overall projects from Thumbtack. They then decided to roll out the Leads method of obtaining potential jobs. I was skeptical of this new feature because it seemed as though you would have to pay whether you got hired for a job or not. I knew full well that a lot of potential clients didn't respond or were just browsing. It was clear thumbtack was raking in funds from clients and pros whether the jobs were fulfilled or not.
I tried the leads method for a short time and maybe out of 10 bids I sent out 1-2 would respond. I was now paying the inflated fee times ten bids worth for a single job. It just didn't equate as a feasible way to obtain new jobs and mind you they never updated their clients questionnaire. Like many others have pointed out in their reviews there seems to be a whole lot of ghost jobs. It's hard to tell because you're paying for it either way and the only one benefiting from this service method is Thumbtack. I haven't confirmed on a job through their platform in years. It's not worth it. In recent emails it seems like Thumbtack is attempting desperately to get their pros back on their site with their 15% discount offers. Unless, they revamp their "leads" I don't see myself returning and by the looks of it a lot of other professionals feel the same way. I hope this review was helpful.
Hi Bruno, we appreciate you taking the time to share this detailed feedback, we will be passing it along to our team. We're sorry to hear you haven't utilized the platform or found success on Thumbtack as of late. While we can't guarantee jobs, we do work on sending pros the best direct leads, so that they know the customer is interested specifically in them, but also have opportunity leads in case there are projects pros want to reach out about themselves.

Thumbtack promotes itself as a service that provides "pros" for various home repairs but it turns out they do not "hire" any pros. All a service provider needs to do is pay Thumbtack to advertise their so-called service. Avoid this company and get yourself a real professional (licensed) that has credentials and positive reviews. Better to pay more and be assured there is a guarantee. I would never use Thumbtack again. They do not provide anything that resembles professional.
We'd like to get in touch directly if you had a bad experience, to ensure the situation is documented and that our team can provide a resolution as needed. So there's a version of Thumbtack in the UK that is amazing. I earned a tonne of clients and was a top pro. When I moved to the states I wanted to gain more illustration clients for my business Piki Dear so signed up to Thumbtack. DO NOT DO IT if you're a small business. There are sneaky tricks they engage in to get your money.
1. The price per "lead" is not only extortionate, unreasonable and nonsensical, but you have to go searching for the cost of them. In other words, they don't show you the cost unless you click view price.
2. THEY WILL NOT give you a cash refund and it's likely you won't even get credit for future leads. Which means, if a customer who knows nothing about illustration, graphic design (any business really) or any idea about what they want, and you realise you cannot help the customer or vice versa, you will still get charged. The highest I saw was $34. My products are under $100 so this was an insane expense for me.
3. I set my weekly budget to $40 just to try the site. I hit my weekly budget very quickly with very few overpriced leads. I was emailed AND push notified that if I upped my budget I'd get free leads. As soon as I did my budget was spent on very weak leads. Not only that but NO FREE LEADS.
4. They're not transparent and talking to customer services is very difficult. You cannot respond to their support emails so you have to submit a new request and you end up talking to someone new, who doesn't know your case, each time.
5. When I got hold of someone and told them I'd received a special offer by email they completely denied it despite me having screenshots of the email, push notification, and on site notification.
Basically I'm down about $60 and they would not help me, they said I could apply for credit refunds via the site and then I was told each time they're not eligible. Do yourself a favour and stay away, they have no respect for small businesses.

DO NOT PAY FOR A PRO ACCOUNT. Thumbtack takes the money you spend on their pro account to market on Google and then resell those leads to you. Just market directly via Google Ads. I know because before we spent money with Thumbtack we weren't seeing them on local searches for our company service. Suddenly once we put some money into Thumbtack they started marketing in OUR market, driving up our Google Ads prices and reselling those customers to us.
This company is completely dishonest about this practice and the lack of accountability comes all the way from the top down. I emailed the company management team requesting a refund after their customer service chose to be unresponsive. Guess what? It's the same at the top. Thumbtack took away their customer service away from their pros. They are requesting text message only and no one is getting back to you. They charge me for leads that was not a direct match and I need a refund and no one is available anymore. I think this company is a rip off.

I used Thumbtack for some simple tasks. The contractor was so abrasive and aggressive he threw items across my living room. He didn't know how to install a dishwasher, damaged my newly installed floor and Thumbtack refused to fix the damage. Don't use them unless you want a bigger problem.
We're really sorry to hear about your experience and these project concerns. It sounds like you've been in touch with our Trust and Safety Team, however we're not able to locate your case based on the information shared. I began registering for Thumbtack, until I got to the point that it asked for a credit card. In the registration it said I could be paying $30 just for someone to contact me. No guaranteed client, just for them to contact me. I decided it wasn't worth the risk of numerous contacts without a guaranteed job, so I stopped registering. Since then I have been inundated with spam email from Thumbtack about "This customer found and contacted another pro first." Many of them nowhere near my location. I am literally getting 20+ emails a day! This is shady, and annoying.
We're sorry to hear you decided not to move forward on Thumbtack as a pro. It sounds like the emails might not fit your preferences because the sign-up process wasn't completed. Updated on 09/14/2023: So I was with Thumbtack since 2017 as a pro and over the years I saw how the company came up with new ways to charge pros more and more money and create new ways to reject refund requests. First it was providing pros with the phone number when a client requests services and once you have the phone number they will not give you a refund. When clients do not even respond to any of your messages you will not get a refund. Then they started a bidding war between pros to set prices that they will pay to get leads. This in turn allows the pros that are willing to raise their price per lead the opportunity to get more leads, which is horrible for small, self owned businesses.
I gave probably half of my income to thumbtack but I was stuck in this trap because I had no other option to make money. Now that I am financially free and moved on to a different source of income, I wanted to share how truly disgusted I am with Thumbtack and their constant corporate decisions to increase their revenue by stealing from pros. Every pro that I reached out to shared the same exact feelings. When you google thumbtack reviews, you will see that the good reviews are for Pros from the customers. The bad reviews are from the pros themselves. I'm so glad I am finally done with this company.
Original Review: I have been with Thumbtack as a pro for about 3 years and throughout my time, I have seen rules and fees change for an effort to maximize Thumbtack’s profit. Fees for leads have gone up and rules for refunds have gotten absurd. You can no longer get a refund for a lead accidentally reaching out to you twice, you have to pay for both inquiries. Thumbtack doesn’t notify customers that all the pros they select for a potential hiring, are paying for their inquiry. Thumbtack keeps all of the extra money that all the non chosen pros pay for that inquiry as well. It is clearly a game of maximizing their profit and it’s greedy and disgusting. I am working extremely hard to open my own business so I do not have to deal with them anymore!

I used thumbtack to find a few local service providers in my area, but I found the results were highly unprofessional. Upon closer examination, they were filled with fake reviews to create artificial ratings. Customer support is virtually non-existent. Extremely unsatisfied. Beware!

I have been using Thumbtack for 3 years and I've had nothing but good 5 star standings with my customers on the platform. They get one complaint from one customer and they deactivated my account. The only way to active my account is to pay this customer $385 when she only paid us $200 for the job. So disappointed in Thumbtack and the customer service for the resolution of fighting these actions.
Thank you for sharing feedback, we're sorry to see you go. I hired a Thumbtack roofer to repair the roof of my trailer. $3,000, for which I have a receipt. Unfortunately the name of the company on the receipt doesn't exist. They did nothing except for some sealer on it and that was it. They didn't check the screws. They didn't replace the screws. They did nothing else. And there was no way of contacting them. The cell phone I got was disconnected. And the name on the receipt does not exist except in Long Island.

I have been with Thumbtack for a decade. The fees have gone higher and higher. Not worth doing some of the jobs because the fees can be 60 on a low paying job. Try getting on the phone with someone. That is a joke. They give you standard answers. Like we connect you with clients. It’s up to you. Yes, but if the event doesn't match your preferences, you pay the fee. They want you to try and get them to switch the dates on their event. What!!!! Going to slowly ween off on using them. Too much money.

I received a recommendation for a contractor through Thumbtack. They say they do background checks, Walker's Custom Construction not only had an expired license, but looked up their court records and it was long. We signed a fraudulent contract and I gave them a deposit of $3,100.25. He was to tile the floors and around the tub, paint and install new fixtures. I was keeping the toilet, sink and tub, because they were from 1940s in great condition and doing my bathroom in retro. He ripped out my sink along with the plumbing, took out my toilet and took a hammer and busted them both up. He put non moisture boards up around my shower/tub. So I fired them before he did more damage.
Thumbtack's claims dept is now giving me the runaround. They are to pay up to $1,000 for an incomplete job and up to $5,000 for damages. Sent them all documents and pictures. Then they advised since there were no damages they would only pay up to the thousand. Then they said they don't pay for repairs done wrong. Then they said they need pictures of the nonexistent sink and toilet. They apparently are not reading my emails. Smashing up a good sink and toilet and ripping out the plumbing isn't damage? Nothing about him not doing the plumbing correctly, they ripped it out of the wall. How do you take pictures of smashed up toilet and sink that's been thrown out. Thumbtack is not doing their job, I am a 67 year old woman, and they recommended a criminal to my house.

I started with Thumbtack at least a decade ago. You used to be able to chose the jobs/clients that you wanted at a reasonable price. I got a few large jobs on my own and didn't need Thumbtack for about 2 years. When I tried to get back with them, things had changed for the worse. I used to be able to call them with a question or problem and things were quickly resolved. Not any more! No phone calls, only emails (by their own admission it can take 2 days for a reply) or by chat.
Last week I tried to add money to my account so I could find a few customers. My credit card was still on file but Thumbtack could not use it to put money into my account. After over 2 hrs "chatting" and waiting for replies from a rep, I was told it was my bank's fault and to get things straightened out with them. When I checked with my bank there were 13 $0 charges against my account. It was Thumbtack NOT my bank! I chatted again about the same problem for over an hour with no resolution.
I gave up. I again chatted with a rep saying that I wanted to close everything out and would they please refund the $51.92 that had been sitting in my account for over 2 years. "We don't refund money that is in accounts". This business that used to be good has become nothing but a ripoff. I requested, numerous times, to talk to someone on the phone but they don't do that any more. Instead of a 5-10 minute phone call, I spent over 4hrs chatting for nothing. That's 4hrs I'll never get back. And $51.92. I know Thumbtack will reply to this criticism as they should have the right to, but it will be the same old crap that they used to reply to all the other complaints and nothing will get fixed. It's all a numbers game, if they keep getting pros (suckers) to pay them for leads and the money keeps coming in, then they're making a profit and customer service be damned. When the company finally fails, they will already be sipping cocktails on the beach in Mexico.

I'm an attorney, and I've had an account with Thumbtack since 2014. The past year or so, I have been provided some very bad leads (people who are not actually looking for the legal services in my area of law, and I get charged automatically for it), and sometimes I get charged twice for the same lead. Worse, when trying to get ahold of someone at the company, I can't get through via phone, and no one responds from the website. What's happening here?

At first this site was good to use to receive leads for my business, but over time the prices on leads started to raise extremely high. They average $25-$60 PER LEAD, and also found out they tell these leads “price averages” that us pros charge (which is extremely low). 98% of the leads I receive, I never land the job or can’t even get a response from them. This results in me having to pay for every lead even when they don't respond but “read” my message. They say to respond in a certain time frame, and a lot of the time I do right away or shortly after. I took all their “tips” on winning leads as well.
EVERY TIME I would try to get a refund for these leads that wouldn’t respond, I would never ever get a email to resolve the matter. The only email we would get is to wait for a response from their help center in 2-4 days, but then never heard of again. After 30 days you can no longer try to get a refund back from that lead, and funny because that’s when I would get a response and that is what Thumbtack would say .... "It's been 30 days and we no longer can submit... Next time do it before". I would send them proof I have tried over and over again but they would send the same response. THEY’RE SCAM ARTIST, their leads are fake to just charge you and take your Money, then never respond. I have spent hundreds if not THOUSANDS because of this. These are the type of games that are played. Do better Thumbtack.

I used a recommend hardwood contractor by Thumbtack after receiving the list of contractors. The guy robbed my $2500. I reported to the police shared the police report with thumbtack and the contractor is still listed and recommended by Thumbtack? This goes to show you what kind of background check they do. BEWARE!!! They may recommend a thief and you get robbed like I did. Search for local reputable contractors. I was unable to get my money back and had to suit the guy who run away with $2500. Thumbtack has all the information and paperwork but they need contractors for their existence so they’ll protected them regardless if they’re crooks or not. DO NOT USE this company. They’re clearly not pro-consumer.

Like many other pros I used Thumbtack 5 years ago and was able to generate a good clientele with them. They had it setup to where they would send you leads in your area and if you liked what you saw you were able to bid on it for a couple bucks. Then out of nowhere they changed up the format and started charging anywhere from $6-$14 just to respond to a lead. I paused my account and just recently reopened it. They want to charge you money now just to send you leads. They call it targetting. I was unaware of how it all worked as they don't explain the charging process. Tried to turn off their targeting app and it wouldn't let me. I immediately took my bank card off file and cancelled my account. You better not charge me Thumbtack. Like I said. They used to be great, Now they're crooks

It is truly a gamble when you try to hire someone from the site. I have found several contractors who are responsive to an initial email just to game the system of showing responsiveness; however, they do not follow through with keeping their appointments. When requesting lawn mowing service, the site only provided four companies. One by one, I reached out to several companies and they showed little to no response. They would make an initial reply, then responses were delayed and appointments were not kept.
There was one company that kept showing up on my feed that I had previously done business with and had to discontinue because of poor performance. Their reviews even showed performance had not improved since I worked with it. Yet Thumbtack still has this in my feed as suggested contractors. There needs to be closer monitoring on the email exchanges between companies and clients so they get a true picture of the quality of contractors. Perhaps even require companies to watch a customer service 101 video before allowing them to join the site, and before holding them accountable for poor customer service.
Thanks for this honest feedback, Derrick. We definitely understand your frustrations, we're sorry to hear that you had a bad experience, and that hiring some of these pros didn't work out. I have been a pro with Thumbtack for more than 6 years and am currently a Top Pro with the company. On many of their business pages, the website shows: "You'll auto-pay for jobs to be done during these times when they match your other preferences." However, just know that they actually mean, only if the customer indicates what 'times' the job needs to be completed. This means you can be charged for a lead at 1A regardless of what you post for the "hours you work". This is something I have continuously been a victim of with this company. I think it is a very unfair process with small businesses to mislead them in such a way. If that is the case, the page should note that so there is no confusion. I have also been subjected to their misleading tactics in other ways:
2. They have missed updating my review numbers and I have missed job opportunities based on the number of reviews I have received.
3. They will still charge you for a lead when in all actuality they do no prior research into the customer that is signing up. The customer, in my experience, could enter a home phone (no text available), a fake number because they fear being spammed, or other misleading information, and although there could be no real way to contact them, you will NOT receive a refund. Regardless of no communication.
We're sorry to hear that this was your experience, Brittany. We appreciate you taking the time to share these details with us, it's not the type of experience we want pros to have. You should have clear expectations of what you'll be paying for, and we'd be glad to provide personalized support and address each concern that you mentioned in your review.
